TOTAL COORDINATION - NATIONAL NEWS

Spain sets new transplant record Thanks to 39 donors – two of them foreigners – doctors were able to carry out 94 transplants in 72 hours, the National Transplant Organisation (ONT) announced on Monday. The transplants took place on November 23rd, 24th and 25th, and involved 42 hospitals – 40 in Spain (in Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla-León. Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Valencia, Extremadura, Galicia, La Rioja, Madrid, Murcia and the Basque Country) and two in Portugal, with the participation of more than

1,000 medical professionals who “worked in a totally coordinated way”, the ONT said. The ONT added that it was all made possible thanks to a number of different public and private entities, including 10 airports (seven civil, two military and one international), as well as the emergency services and Civil Protection in the regions.

The ONT said only two of the donors had died in traffic accidents. The transplants were mainly of the kidney (48), liver (23) and lungs (8). The ONT said the people who benefited from them were all rated “zero urgency”, that is, they had less than 48 hours to live. The previous “transplant marathon” took place in 24 hours on March 29th,

2009, when 32 organs from 13 donors were transplanted.

We are now safely ensconced in our new offices opposite the la Trocha commercial centre on the coin to cartama road and had our office party at the weekend (see this page for details!). We have people staying in the house for the next few weeks as it’s my husband’s 60th birthday on Thursday week so we’re off celebrating with his brother and family. The fact that they just happen to live in Australia is a wee bit of a bonus as we are having to go all the way to the other side of the world to celebrate. Such a hardship.... nOT! We’re having a couple of days with our friend in the uK, then off to Sydney for four days, then Melbourne, Sorrento and Tasmania. We’ll also be spending a few days on a friend’s farm in the “woop woop” - that’s the campo to you and me. not a very relaxing holiday but it’s going to be fabulous. You will be getting weekly reports! Still, while we’re away, there’s loads for everyone to do with restaurants putting on special meals for the festive season and, if you want to enjoy a gala dinner, why not try the Tamisa where, if you mention The news Offer, you’ll get 20% off the cost of the meal. clubs and Societies will also be there to look after everyone so, if you’re single or just arrived, there’s absolutely no need to be alone at christmas unless you want to be. next week I’ll try and find some space to give you some recipes for christmassy treats, not only for the day but some quick and easy bits and pieces for if friends and neighbours happen to pop in. There won’t be a Poco a Poco column for the next couple of weeks as, unfortunately, Valerie’s mum has died so she needs to sort everything out but, she’ll be back before christmas so you won’t quite get away with no work over the festive season. next weeks will be from Aus!

93 people died after two jets collided at Madrid airport

France and Germany stand by Eurozone plan France and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to reform the Eurozone, after ratings agency Standard and Poor's announced on Monday that it had placed its "long-term sovereign ratings" on 15 Eurozone nations on credit watch "with negative implications". The ratings agency said the decision was prompted "by our belief that systemic stresses in the eurozone have risen in recent weeks to the extent that they now put downward pressure on the credit standing of the eurozone as a whole". In addition to Germany and France, Austria, the Netherlands, Finland and Luxembourg also currently have top AAA rating.S&P's announcement means that there is a one in two chance that those countries would see their credit rating fall within 90 days. Analysts also say S&P's move reflects

uncertainty about what would happen were a larger Eurozone country – such as Italy – to default in future. The ratings move came as a surprise to investors and saw stocks fall back on early gains as the euro also fell. The timing of the decision has caused widespread anger because it raises the stakes another notch ahead of an EU summit on Friday that is considered crucial for the future of the single currency. Mr Sarkozy and Mrs Merkel said they would "take note" of S&P's

warning. Eurogroup Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker, meanwhile, described S&P's move as "a wild exaggeration and also unfair". The only two countries not put on credit watch on Monday were Cyprus,

which is already under review, and Greece, whose rating has already been severely downgraded. At their joint press conference on Monday afternoon, Mr Sarkozy said things in Europe "cannot continue as they are" and

Iberia pilots to strike

Indignant ones protest eviction More than 2,000 people stopped the traffic in several central Madrid streets on Monday night to protest the eviction of members of the M15 youth movement from the Hotel Madrid and squatters from unoccupied rooms above the Albéniz theater in the capital by the police. With a court order, some 200 members of the riot squad blocked the exits and entrances to the two buildings just before dawn, finally removing 93 people from the hotel and 10 from the rooms above the theatre. Police found several weapons in both buildings and eight

marijuana plants above the theatre. Some 30 protesters were taken from the hotel to local police stations for not carrying identification and another ten were arrested at the theatre, nine of them for infractions of the Immigration Law and one

as the presumed owner of the marijuana plants. The eviction was over by 9am but the police waited at the site for the owner of the building while workers moved in to board up the entrances to the abandoned hotel, which had been occupied since October 15th.

While the unions continued to negotiate with Iberia, its pilots announced on Monday that they would give the dates of their planned strike to the Labour Ministry on Wednesday as well as details of how they would provide the minimum service as required by law. They said if the unions were unable to reach a satisfactory agreement with the company, they intended to hold the strike even though they do not have the support

of the cabin staff. However, many observers feel the strike will not go ahead. Travellers over Christmas will simply seek flights on other airlines and the pilots could

end up “cutting their noses off to spite their faces”. The pilots want Iberia to cancel their plans to cut back on the number of domestic and European flights.

Ombudswoman concerned about evictions The Defensora del Pueblo (Defender of the People), Maria Luisa Cava de Llano (pictured) is putting the finishing touches to a report on evictions for nonpayment of mortgages to be presented to the incoming government. She told the Europa Press news agency that “the banks are in a situation of supremacy over people applying for

Let us show you the future in technolohy nolog hy

mortgages” and this, in her opinion, is “unjust”. However, she said she did not agree with the “Stop evictions” movement which has managed to stop many of them all over the country. Sra Cava de Llano said such actions were “not democratic” and that in any case, the problem could be solved more satisfactorily via legal means.

Nationalists and Left spoil Constitution Day

Getting rid of the “puentes” The businessmen's confederation (CEOE) announced their objective of reducing “puentes” on the eve of the beginning of the longest one so far this year. The longest puentes this year are for Tuesday, December 6th, and Thursday, December 8th, Constitution Day and the Immaculate Conception respectively. Most Spaniards will take off either the first or the second weekend but some will take the whole week off. The CEOE said this will cost the country's small and medium-sized businesses more than €1,000 million, although the figure varies depending on the source. However, the tourism industry looks upon such

puentes as a boon, especially as the majority of Spaniards can't afford travelling abroad because of the economic crisis so have to make do with domestic tourist destinations. The CEOE wants all these public holidays to be moved to a Monday, except for National Day (October 12th), Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Polls indicate that some 70 per cent of Spaniards agree with this and apparently the unions would go along with it, as long as their members don't lose out.

The Mayor of Gerona, Carlos Puigmont (pictured right), who belongs to the Catalan Nationalist party CiU, kicked the ball off a few days ago, when he announced he would not be celebrating Constitution Day because he saw no sense in it. He is the first Catalan mayor to do so in the 32 years since the Constitution was approved by a majority of the Spanish people. The Catalan premier Artur Mas (also of the CiU) was one of the several nationalists who did not attend the celebrations held in Parliament in Madrid which included a lunch for the outgoing government, Prime Minister-elect Mariano Rajoy and the

Volcano alert to be lifted The commission set up to follow the socio-economic development of the Canary Islands considers that the smallest island, El Hierro, is no longer at risk from volcanic activity. The commission includes town councillors, businessmen, trade union representatives and local politicians who are keen to get the island's tourism industry back on its feet. One proposal is to reduce air fares to the island as much as possible. The commission also oversees the paying of compensation to the residents who were evacuated from their homes.

Somali pirate attacks drop sharply The number of hijackings by Somali pirates dropped sharply last month compared to November last year, according to European Naval Force figures which show just 12 attempted pirate attacks in November 2011, compared to 35 last year. Naval officers said this was due to a combination of factors. more and more ships are now carrying armed guards, many vessels are better protected with razor wire and water cannon, and there has been an increased number of naval interceptions of pirate boats, known as 'skiffs'.

The gap between rich and poor in the 34 countries belonging to the Organisation FRANCE for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has reached its highest level Action highlights nuclear for over 30 years, and governments must act quickly to tackle inequality, vulnerability according to its latest report “Divided we stand: Why inequality keeps rising”. The average income of the richest 10% is now about nine times that of the poorest 10 % across the OECD. The income gap has risen even in traditionally egalitarian countries, such as Germany, Denmark and Sweden, from 5 to 1 in the

1980s to 6 to 1 today. The gap is 10 to 1 in Italy, Japan, Korea and the United Kingdom, and higher still, at 14 to 1 in Israel, Turkey and the United States. In Chile and Mexico, the incomes of the richest are still more than 25 times those of the poorest, the

highest in the OECD. Income inequality is much higher in some major emerging economies outside the OECD area, such as Brazil, where the gap is 50 to 1. The report said tax and benefit systems play a major role in reducing market-driven

inequality, but have become less effective at redistributing income since the mid-1990s. The OECD underlines the need for governments to review their tax systems to ensure that wealthier individuals contribute their fair share of the tax burden. Nine Greenpeace campaigners entered a nuclear power station sixty miles south east of Paris before dawn on Sunday to highlight the "vulnerability" of atomic sites in France. The group also targeted two other nuclear sites in France at the same time.

Coca-Cola product 'was poisoned'

The power company, Electricité de France (EDF), said the intruders were detected straight away. An advisor to President Nicolas Sarkozy, Henri Guaino, acknowledged that the action raised concerns about the security of access to nuclear power plants.

In a statement, they said someone had "deliberately adulterated" the drink with a toxic substance and caused a threat to public

Experts said on monday that a new reading of the 1,300-yearold tablet mentioning the 2012 date suggests that it refers to the end of an era in the calendar, and not an apocalypse. They said the date was "a reflection of the day of creation", and also marked the day the mayan god of creation and war, Bolon Yokte, was expected to return.

Halliburton 'destroyed' oil spill evidence Oil giant BP claimed on Monday that oilfields services firm Halliburton deliberately destroyed damaging evidence relating to last year's oil well blast in the Gulf of Mexico in which 11 people were killed. At a hearing in a New Orleans' court, BP’s lawyers said that after reviewing the test results on its cement product used at the Macondo well, Halliburton "destroyed records of the testing as well as the physical cement samples used in the testing". They also said Halliburton had failed to produce computer modelling evidence, which showed how the cement

In its motion, BP asked for sanctions against Halliburton, claiming that the company's cement slurry was "unstable". Halliburton rejected the claim, and accused BP of fraud and defamation in the investigation. It also

The two companies traded allegations ahead of the trial over the spill disaster in February next year, which is expected to apportion blame and quantify damages arising from the spill. There will also be other phases of the case over clean-up costs and other claims.

e Search Goes On Shocking Mother As part of a review of the Madeleine McCann case Scotland Daughter Murder Yard detectives have flown to Spain. The police officers spent three days in Barcelona last month with Spanish colleagues discussing the little girl's disappearance across the border in Portugal. The Metropolitan Police force has said there would be no limits in its reexamination of the search. Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing from the holiday flat, in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on the 3rd of May in 2007, while her parents Kate and Gerry dined with friends nearby. Detectives are unwilling to discuss what drove officers to travel to Barcelona in November. Police have also travelled to Portugal three times in connection with the fresh review.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "The review continues. There has been very good cooperation with Portuguese authorities and liaison will continue. We are not prepared to discuss specific details of these visits nor speculate about any future deployments to Portugal or elsewhere." The senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, was understood to be among a team of detectives who went on the trips. A total of 30 people are currently working on the force's Operation Grange. The review was launched in May and received much criticism, with politicians expressing concerns that it would divert resources from other crime victims. It began

shortly after a request from Home Secretary Theresa May supported by Prime Minister David Cameron. Portuguese detectives, helped by officers from Leicestershire Police, carried out a massive investigation into Madeleine's disappearance. However, the official inquiry was formally shelved in July 2008 and since then there has been no police activity to looking for the missing girl.

Angela Holgate, 54 and her mother Alice Huyton, 75 were found dead in Merseyside this weekend. The women were discovered by a relative at the Mrs Holgate’s home on Saturday. The mother, Mrs Huyton was last seen when she went to visit her daughter on Friday evening. The post mortem examination indicates that both women were asphyxiated, however the daughter had been dead longer than the mother. The police want to speak to Barry Morrow, who was a lodger at Mrs Holgate’s home in Churchtown, where the bodies were found in the same room. Mr Morrow was last seen on Saturday in Southport, but he has since been sighted in a French port. Police believe that Mr.

Poor Posties! The UK’s posties have been warned off taking Christmas presents from customers if they’re worth over £30 due to concerns about the Bribery act but they can still accept small tips. The Royal Mail sent a note to all employees saying: "a bribe is not just about money, it could be any gift, hospitality or favour. Gifts may only be given or accepted up to a value of £30; any gifts over £30 must be politely declined. We have made it absolutely clear to our people that Christmas tips are allowed." Wales

And poor Puss! a twelve-hour rescue operation that included local firefighters was carried out on anglesey, North Wales recently as they tried to rescue what they thought was a missing pet cat “Puss Puss”. a steel bin eventually had to be cut open after being transported 18 miles to an engineering firm. Inside they found a fluffy toy cat with a battery operated “miaow” that locals had mistaken for PP’s cries for help. Unfortunately Puss Puss is still missing so, where is Puss Puss?

'Go fast' drug operations studied The Guardia Civil's Organised Crime Units (ECO) are holding coordination conferences in Malaga this week to look at the latest trend in drug trafficking – the so-called “go fast” operations. Gangs come from Algeria to buy drugs in the south of Spain and then drive at full speed to France, usually in stolen cars, with the drugs stashed in false bottoms. The ECO have arrested more than 1,200 people in the past two years for drug-related activities and busted 107 criminal organisations. In the process, they seized 14.5 tons of hashish, 3.4 tons of cocaine, 73 firearms and 388 cars and boats, as well as other crime-related paraphernalia such as bullet-proof vests.

Mayor gives salary to workers mayor josé Pazos has worked out a way to be able to give work cleaning the streets to 18 unemployed people for two weeks over Christmas in this small town (pop. 7,300) in granada province – by paying them with his salary together with the money the council is saving on Christmas street lights – around €20,000. The council will use the red Cross's list of recipients of the food parcels that are distributed to some 50 local families to identify those in need. FuengiroLa

Traffic accidents down Council spokesman for Citizens' Safety, rodrigo romero, said last week that traffic accidents in the town have dropped by 7 per cent so far this year – from 678 in 2010 to 630. This follows a downward trend which began in 2007, Sr romero said. He said contributing factors to the drop included an improvement in street signals for drivers as well as the Local Police's collaboration with the Traffic authority in several recent road safety and awareness campaigns.

Police get drug detectors The Local Police are to be equipped with drug detectors as well as breathalysers and will receive training in their use to give the results legal validity. a police spokesman said the breathalysers only detect alcohol consumption and are no use in cases where the person's behaviour is caused by other substances. He said drugged drivers were just as dangerous to public health and safety as drunk drivers and the new detectors would help the police do a better job to keep the town's roads safe.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Heading for the hills

Get it done now

F

ith Mariano Rajoy’s swearing-in ceremony around the corner, it is still a big wonder why he has refused to reveal his big belt-tightening plans for Spain. His long-awaited announcements are making many Spaniards and the markets jittery. Yet the Partido Popular's prime minister-elect doesn’t seem to care. He feels that because he won by a landslide last month, voters have now given him carte blanche to do anything he wants. There are a few who know of what’s to come. Nick Clegg spent more than an hour with Rajoy last week and later told reporters that the PP leader has an “ambitious” programme on his agenda. Judging by what is going on in Italy with Mario Monti’s recent austerity moves – pension cuts, public sector pay freezes and retirement age boosts – we can just about expect that the similar measures will be applied here. Fortunately, many of those ingredients of the Italian crisis management recipe have already been introduced here by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero’s Socialist government. But what is frightening is that Rajoy is expected to fashion even tougher measures in line with what Europe’s “copresidents” - Merkel and Sarkozy - are demanding.

ormer proof reader and current contributor Andrea Maclean asked me at our Christmas lunch on Sunday why “Rajoy wasn't heading for the hills”. Like millions of others, she can’t believe that anyone in their right mind would want to govern Spain right now, and admittedly, Prime Minister elect Mariano Rajoy seems the man least likely for the job - but I suspect he's a case of still waters running deep.

W

hile he appears the most mildmannered of men – too much of gentlemen to govern the unruly Spaniards – he comes from a region of Spain – Galicia – where the natives are just the opposite of the garrulous Andalucians. They are so sparing with words that they appear to be a bit thick – to the extent that nasty ethnic jokes in Spain always feature “Gallegos”.

W

hat people forget is that Galicia has produced many of the emigrants who headed west to carve out a better life for themselves. They didn’t do anything as spectacular as conquistadors like Hernan Cortes, who subjugated Mexico, and Francisco Pizarro, ditto Peru. They followed later and quietly carved out modest fortunes for themselves, mainly in agriculture and the food retail business. Their main objective was to amass the money they needed to build a little home back in Galicia, and many achieved that aim. But many stayed on the other side of the pond to add to South America's genetic pool. Of their descendants, Fidel Castro is the most famous – three of his grandparents where immigrants from Galicia. His ability to hold on to power in Cuba for more than 50 years gives an idea of the kind of iron the Gallegos can have in their soul. However, he broke the Gallegos' silent mode – his political harangues could last anything up to eight hours.

A

nother Gallego nearer home is Francisco Franco who was not one of the main plotters among the military who rose up against the Second Republic in July 1936 but ended up with all the power nevertheless.

H

e then proceeded to wield absolute power until his death in 1975, confounding all his internal and external enemies along the way. He rarely bothered to tell people what his plans were and, unlike Castro, he was a man of few words. Apparently, at one of

his “puppet cabinet” meetings, he asked for his ministers' opinions about a proposal he'd made a few days earlier. Not daring to disagree, they sat there for about 10 minutes in silence until Franco said “well, that's that then”, stood up and left.

N

either Castro nor Franco are role models for Rajoy. People who know him say that while he has the iron will of both of them, he tends to make up his mind after consulting his closest advisers – the sign of a rational, mature person – unlike Zapatero who was so insecure he surrounded himself with “yes men and women”, with the exception of Rubalcaba towards the end.

P

eople who go around claiming he's under the thumb of former PM Jose Maria Aznar, who has drifted steadily to the right in recent years, have been walking around with their eyes wide shut. The two men have rarely been seen together in public, mainly because Rajoy wanted it that way, according to party insiders. And while certain elements on the party's right may be trying to undermine him, I doubt if they'll succeed. If Rajoy has managed to edge the party towards the centre of the political spectrum during the past seven years, it´s because those who matter on the inside agree with him.

A

s for those who criticise Rajoy for not telling us what he intends to do once he's sworn in, they're the very same people who supported Zapatero when he lied about the economy not being in crisis – they knew he was lying but there was a general election in the offing and come what may, the Socialists had to be kept in power.

I

love Antonio Banderas and normally have no reason to criticise him. However, when he warned the other day that if Rajoy won the election, the Spanish film industry would receive no more government subsidies, all I could think was “and a good thing too”. Maybe they'll start making films that the average Spaniard will want to see, instead of the arty-farty nonsense they usually turn out, when they're not glorifying the Second Republic.

M

eanwhile, we'll just have to keep on wondering and speculating until the man finally opens his

mouth.

E

W

R

ajoy is waiting until after his swearing-in – slated for sometime after December 20th, probably the 21st – to tell the nation what is in store for them. He has promised to reveal part of his agenda to colleagues from the European People’s Party (EPP) when he meets with them in the next few days. Why is it taking so long for Rajoy to assume the reins of government? The maximum 25-day delay is imposed by the Spanish Constitution. According to Article 68, “Elections shall take place between thirty and sixty days after the end of the previous term of office” and “Congress so elected must be convened within 25 days following the holding of elections.” This is one of the reasons we are all holding our breath.

A

fter Rajoy is “appointed“ by the king and during his investiture, he must tell Congress what his plans for Spain will be for the next four years. So we should get some inkling of what we can expect by Christmas.

T

here have been some revelations, however. Rajoy has given the trade unions and big business the

opportunity to come up with their own plans for labour reform by January 6th. If not, the PP will go ahead and decree its own job reform package, which by all accounts will not sit well with the leftist parties and the trade unions. Last year, Zapatero tried to iron out labour reform measures through marathon meetings with the trade union representatives and members of the businessmen’s confederation, CEOE, but it didn’t work. When that fell through and the Socialist government went ahead with its own decree, the PP was the first in line to take pot shots at Zapatero for “imposing” laws that were not favourable to anyone. Now it seems Rajoy will be doing the same.

T

he PP is also keen on abolishing, or at least refining, the number of work holidays that Spaniards are entitled to each year. This week, we have seen two holidays - Tuesday and Thursday – with regular work periods in between. According to some estimates, the extended two-holiday weekend period cost the economy some €12 billion. The PP has offered to allow Spaniards to celebrate certain commemorative days on Mondays and Fridays – and not in the middle of the week - .in order for them to have a threeday weekend similar to what occurs in the United States. With regard to this proposal, both labour and the CEOE say they agree.

T

he upcoming legislative term no doubt will be filled with tension, broken promises and vague plans for the future. The PP has a maximum of four years to show that it can run this country better than the Socialists have done in the past past two legislative terms. As this crisis continues to unfold, many Spaniards who are not particularly fond of the PP are now resigned to telling themselves that they really don’t care which party or politician will take the credit for putting Spain back on its feet; they just want someone to get it done and to do it now.

Community News Charities on fire THESPA Christmas dinner

A lot of women would agree that there is just definitely something about a fireman that makes you hot under the collar – maybe it’s the uniform, maybe it’s the smudges of soot on the faces, or maybe it’s simply because they are usually super fit – who knows!

Both calendars are available at www.debra.es and in DEBRA’S charity shops (C/ Jacinto Benavente 12 & C/ Mendoza, Malaga).

Anyway, that aside ladies, you are in for a treat because the firemen of Malaga have produced a calendar for your delectation this year and have had their photos taken to help raise funds and awareness for the Butterfly Children Charity. DEBRA Spain, the Butterfly Children Charity (together with DEBRA Ireland) has also been chosen to receive the benefits from Ryanair’s Girls annual charity calendar, so don’t worry boys, there’s one for you too!

If you don’t fancy firemen or the girls from Ryannair, hand made Christmas cards and 2012 calendars are now available from the 12 Cudeca charity shops along the coast and the Cudeca Centre in Benalmádena. The cards come in two designs this year. The packs contain the traditional style Cudeca Christmas cards and are 10 cards for €6 or five cards for €4 – all

individually designed by a team of volunteers. The 2012 calendars the Cudeca feature sunflower theme and the photos were kindly donated by the coast’s photographic association “Friends in Focus”. They are available for a €3 donation at the same Cudeca outlets as the cards.

DAVID THE DOGMAN Home and Housebreaking Puppies Puppies are so adorable with their softness, big eyes and lovable ways! For sure, everyone loves puppies but these cuddly furry creatures require so much care, especially in home and housebreaking them. Here is some important information for home and housebreaking your puppy:

Feeding Feed your puppy with a superior brand of dry puppy food. Do not give him table scraps and – as much as possible – do not change brands. If you need to change, feed your pup gradually over a period from four to seven days. Alternately, feed your pup with the old brand followed by the new one while phasing out the old slowly. Do not feed him with tinned food as it loosens stool and makes housebreaking more difficult. An hour after eating, most

puppies will defecate so you can control his elimination time based on your feeding schedule.

It’s Panto Time! ‘Cinders, e True Story’ Once again Christmas is almost upon us, with all the seasonal traditions that are associated with this festive time. There is no greater British tradition than pantomime and TAPAS (The Andalucia Performing Arts Society) are determined to continue this tradition by presenting ‘Cinders, The True Story,’ written by David Tristram. Once upon a time, there was a hard-working young girl called Cinders. Everybody loved Cinders because she was gentle, shy and unassuming – not! The time has come for the real story of Cinderella to be told, warts and all! This hilarious panto puts an interesting twist on an old familiar story. With a plethora of sixties songs intermingled into the storyline, just to keep you interested, this is a Cinderella for the 21st Century. All your favourite characters are included – Dotty and Potty, two sisters

A Divine Shepherdess surrounded by fire

Written by

Jean Joss

The Fiesta de los Rondeles in the pueblo of Casarabonela has been celebrated for around 300 years.

R

eligious processions are, of course, an integral part of Spanish life but the one that takes place here every year on 12th December – the eve of St Lucia's day – is really rather special. Like so many of the pueblos blancos dotted around the Andalucian mountains, Casarabonela in the Sierra del las Nieves originated in Moorish times, its whitewashed houses and narrow winding streets still clinging virtually unchanged across the side of the Sierra Prieta underneath the remains of a

t nine in the evening the parish priest blesses the enormous torches – the mats are now rolled tightly and impregnated with oil and lit from a central fire. Then, around ten o'clock, these are carried on long poles high above the heads of the faithful (in their distinctive peasant/shepherd dress) and their followers – lighting up the narrow streets to make way for the Virgin and Child who are carried from the Ermita de la Veracruz to the parish church of Santiago Apóstol, accompanied by musicians

B

ack in the eighteenth century when olives were pressed under mats made from capacho (esparto grass) the millers would thank “the Divine Shepherdess (the Virgin Mary) at the end of the harvest by taking her effigy out in a procession lit by torches made from the used mats called rondeles. The tradition has persisted and has now been declared a festival of National Tourist Interest which attracts hundreds of visitors.

and singers. Christmas choirs of adults and children sing carols, drums roll and castenets clack. The winter atmosphere is electric and emotional and once the Divine Shepherdess is safely ensconced in the church the crowd repair to the town square to relax and have hot chocolate, oil and garlic toast and buĂąuelos de viento (sugar-coated fritters rather like light fluffy doughnuts, dating from Moorish times).

T

he rondeles procession is the highlight but there are

plenty of other things going on in Casarabonela during the four-day festival which starts on Friday, December 9th. There is a typical Andaluz market with traditional products on sale – and for tasting – as well as a ruta de la tapa, a free paella, an art exhibition and activities for the children. There is also a competition for the best nativity scene, or belen, and entries can be viewed in contestants' homes throughout the village.

Quality food and service

The Cala Luna restaurant is quite a gem. Nestling in the corner of Plaza Pablo Ruiz Picasso, just behind the Paseo Maritimo, Fuengirola, it is a quality restaurant offering international and European cuisine at very reasonable prices. In the cosy ambience of this pretty rustic restaurant I sampled my first Hungarian cuisine. My jaded opinion of English-style cottage cheese was revitalised when I sampled the Hungarian version, livened up with mustard, paprika and onions, for my aperitif. It was quite addictive! The Hungarian goulash, of perfectly cooked vegetables and tender pieces of beef in a rich, spicy gravy had a real kick to it – perfect for a chilly evening. For my main course, I chose the chicken stroganoff, succulent pieces of chicken with mushroom in delicious creamy sauce, complemented by a side of wild rice, and my meal was rounded off with a light, creamy classic, crème bruleé. The presentation of each course was impeccable and the service was warm, courteous and attentive. Having been established here over a year now, owners Andy and Krisztina, the most gracious of hosts,

The News have a firm foothold in the hosteleria business, after running establishments in the British Isles for over eight years before heading for these warmer climes. Cala Luna is certainly a place to sample something different, something you would never attempt in your own kitchen, and it does not require a taxi ride out of town, as most restaurants of this calibre do. Andy and Krisztina also welcome and cater for private parties, birthdays and conferences, either in the main restaurant, or in their private function room

I am certain that after eating there once, you will find yourself strolling down to Cala Luna on a regular basis to experience more of their culinary delights, and to check your emails on their free Wi-fi. I’ll be humming that film all day long

O

n a recent work trip to Barcelona I went armed with my trusty laptop, raring to enjoy the luxury of wearing headphones to immerse myself in a film while waiting at the boarding gate and during the flight. It is slightly annoying how the crew on a flight always say that you have to turn off all electrical devices because the plane is taking off or landing or going through a bumpy patch and yet they never announce that you can turn them on again. You kind of have to guess when you can get away with opening up your laptop and carry on viewing.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Puss in Boots By Chris Miller Voices by Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zack Galifianakis When self-styled Don Juan Puss in Boots coughed up a furball and almost stole the show in Shrek II it seemed clear that Dreamworks Animation had discovered a new character destined to winsomely work his way into audiences’ hearts. And so it proved, when he more than held his own in Shrek III, directed by Miller. So it was a no-brainer for studio execs to develop a spin-off story to showcase Puss in the hope of ringing box office tills once the Shrek full-length movie franchise

came to an end. And so it proved – Puss in Boots topped the comedy box office in the US when it was released and has won over most of the critics. if you think cats are funny, cats in high-heeled musketeer boots are funnier, and cats with cattitude voiced by heart-throb Antonio Banderas are hilarious then it doesn't matter how young or old you are, you will love this film. We are still in the land of fairy tales, and in this outing

we discover that long before he met Shrek, Puss was indeed a notorious fighter and womaniser. His childhood friend Humpty Dumpty (Galifianakis) had betrayed him years ago, but now seeks him out to make amends and help Puss clear his name of an earlier robbery. They set off to capture the Goose that lays the Golden Eggs, before outlaws Jack and Jill (Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris) beat them to it. Rival cat burglar Kitty Softpaws (Hayek) joins

forces with Puss and, who would have guessed, turns into his love interest – cue some great flamenco style dance scenes involving the feline purr. So this, the true story of the legend that is Puss in Boots, has won over its audiences and critics with its wit, charm, smart one-liners and great Dreamworks animation. It's set to sparkle at box offices around the world, so don't be too surprised if this isn't the first of a new franchise.

Classic Must Have Time to get High

By Abigail Tyler

By Amy Thomas

This is the Man in Black at his darkest, playing prison songs to approximately 2,000 inmates. Johnny Cash was known for being a bit of an outlaw and a bad boy, so listening to him play Folsom Prison, well you can’t get much better than that – this is Cash at his best! In the background you can hear the normal noises of a prison, the heavy iron doors clanging shut, excited whoops from men who didn't get any and entertainment, dozens of other sounds. These sounds and the trembling bass of Johnny Cash give this album a feel of being free and trapped at the same time. Cash

delivers

Cocaine

Blues, Folsom Prison Blues, The Wall and 25 Minutes To Go with conviction and dark humour. After The Wall, he switches gears into a few humorous tunes, then brings in June Carter to sing with him. Also, the prison announcements during the concert are priceless. Even if you are not a big country music fan, this recording will give you an education into what great country music is.

Oasis was one of the best British bands of the 1990s and the 2000s, and the 2009 break-up wasn’t much of a shock, but had me thinking that that was the end of good British music. As we all know, Noel was the brains and soul behind Oasis, and his new solo album “High Flying Birds” reassures us that the Oasis sound is still very much alive. With Oasis firmly behind him, Noel has finally been able to let loose and get creative. One of the more popular tracks is The Death of You and Me which is very reminiscent of The Importance of Being Idle – not a bad thing at all. There is a Beatles influence but the unique Gallagher sound is strong, only Noel has eased off on the guitar solos in the new album.

The entire album flows very nicely and contains some of the best songs Noel has ever written, Everybody is on the Run has a brilliant melody, the lyrics and Noel’s voice are just amazing and powerful. However, Dream On and Stranded on the Wrong Beach, sound more like Oasis tracks. High Flying Birds is said to be better that Coldplay’s new album. Now I’m not sure about that, but I am sure that this is an instant classic!

L

ast week I decided to watch the Natalie Portman film, Black Swan as I winged my way towards the Catalan capital but I hadn’t thought things through properly. I’m used to the lengthy flights back and forwards to the UK and the short hop to Barca meant that I didn’t get through the whole film. As it happens, I didn’t get through half of the film because by the time I landed back in Malaga the next day, I still had 10 minutes of the film to go. As I write this, I still haven’t seen those last few minutes so I can’t spoil the tension for anyone else by saying if she dies at the end or not!

B

lack Swan, for those that haven’t seen the film, is about a ballet dancer who, having won the role of her dreams as the lead dancer in Swan Lake, finds that the pressure exerted on her by the maniacal director and the other jealous ballerinas, pushes her over a mental cliff into paranoia and beyond. Adding to the mix some very graphic images of the physical effects on a dancer’s body with an over controlling mother who is trying to live out her own ambitions through her daughter, the film manages to turn ballet dancing into an edgy, pressurised storyline.

A

nyway, the point of all this was to talk about the music. Obviously the film contains a lot of music. Mainly the same pieces repeated time after time as accompaniment to our heroine’s attempts to please the evil but brilliant director played by French actor Vincent Cassell. Although I saw Swan Lake at the South Bank many years ago, I didn’t realise how much of the music

was still familiar to me. What surprised me more was that after we’d landed at Malaga, I couldn’t stop humming the music!

W

hile I waited for the luggage to arrive on the Yo Sushi style belt, I could not stop humming. Worse than that, I actually considered taking off across the smooth and very empty airport concourse, in what I imagined could be an elegant and fluid imitation of Prince Siegfried. I could see myself pirouetting past belts 24 to 37 and coming to a beautifully executed stop and pose outside the AENA office. I somehow knew that this would please and delight my fellow patient sushi lovers and through some shared transference, they would hear the music ringing round my brain. Or maybe it would just magically start coming out of the tannoy. What I envisioned was a kind of classical ballet solo flashmob and an audience so enthralled that their cases went round unnoticed at least three times.

W

hen I started to think about the practicalities of my debut in performance dance, the first hurdle that came to mind was where I would find ballet shoes in size 13. I mean I have enough problems finding trainers and finding shoes to go with a suit is a nightmare to find in Spain. Can you imagine trying to get ballet slippers in European size 49 or 50 from a shoe shop in Coín? And you have to be so careful with what you take on as hand luggage these days. No, if I was going to start breaking into spontaneous ballet performances across airport arrival lounges, it would have to be barefoot. As my own suitcase passed me for the third time the spell broke. Reality came flooding in as I realised the whole idea of dancing across the airport was preposterous. Aside from the barefoot issue, freespirited dancers don’t have to worry about leaving their hand luggage unattended and a suit for the office is no match for ballet tights or a leotard. Add to this the creaking knees, flat feet, lack of rhythm and the overriding issues of the aerodynamics of beergut, I deflatedly picked up my case and shuffled out of the terminal. Annoyingly though, I still had the musical taunting me between the ears.

You are feeling stronger than you have for a while and you know what needs to be done, that is a winning combination. Now it is just a matter of overcoming any fears or hesitation that are standing in the way of your getting busy. This is the week to seize your internal power and strive for personal excellence in whatever you put your mind to. Make sure you don’t make promises that you can’t keep and get all agreements in writing. This week it may be wise to play it low key and quietly go about your business without bringing too much attention to yourself. Mercury is in retrograde for the next couple of weeks so it would be wise to focus on your own issues. This is because people will say many things and promise much, all with good intentions, and it will be easy for you to take it all the wrong way. Try not to read too much into things or over analyse others or you could get very aggravated. This is a perfect time for love and romance as long as both people know not to take it very serious – you are being given a couple of weeks to lighten up and release some stress and strain that has been building up inside. As long as you meet your obligations you will find some free time to have fun. There may be powerful temptations around you right now that you may need to overcome, have fun, but also think things through.. At the start of the week, even though there are likely to be a lot of distractions and inner feelings going on, you must find a way to remain centered and focused on what you are doing and pay extremely close attention to the details. You have a lot of uplifting changes coming your way especially in the area of personal relationships, your inner passions are set to get super charged and something takes a deeper course. Play things completely straight down the line, if asked questions it is in your interest to tell the truth and let others come to terms with it. The fact is anything you do at the moment is likely to become public knowledge later on, so you may as well be open and honest. Whatever you do make sure you do it well. By the weekend it will be time for a well earned break, you can only push yourself so hard – rest and relaxation is what the doctor ordered. Do one thing at a time Virgo, it is very busy for you right now but to stop the confusion going on around you it is probably better to finish one thing before moving on to the next. You will be focused upon your home and family and want to build on the existing foundations already laid by improving communication and spending time with loved ones. Acting on impulse may not work to your advantage at the moment so take your time.

Your main challenge this week is to allow things to happen naturally and resist trying to take control and force things to happen the way you think they should. There are major rewards and personal victories coming your way if you just go with the flow. Make sure you are crystal clear when September 23rd - communicating with others so that no misunderstandings occur, even better get anything important agreed in writing. October 22nd

Next week we’ll get into the Christmassy stuff but, for this week, I thought we’d have a bit of a treat. They’re called magic because they disappear before your very eyes!

Feelings and emotions are at the surface and although you have been able to release some steam lately you are still in quite a sensitive space. There are likely to be disagreements so it is important for you to remember that things are not always as they appear so try not to get your feathers ruffled for no reason. Take it all in your stride and remain cool and calm as everything will work out in your favour. Good times are ahead.

SAGITTARIUS Time to dream Saggy in as much detail as possible. Make your wishes, as the

stage is being set for the next cycle in your life. Finances are looking good and that is likely to remain that way for some time. Do not allow yourself to be pulled into the high dramas of others or follow the crowd, just remain as November 22nd - original as possible. In a way the less you do the better off you may be as long December 21st as you stay on the ‘high road’ all will continue to flourish beautifully.

Others may not understand what you are doing and why you are doing it, this could mean that they could try and cause problems - all with the best of intentions. Instead find and tackle the things you know need to be accomplished, do not wait for a rainy day, get them done while you can. You could find yourself in the right place at the right time and some things will just seem ‘right’. Watch the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves.

The worst thing anyone can do is to underestimate your inner power and determination, one only has to watch a salmon swim upstream, battling against the current to spawn, in order to get a clue of the strength that lies within you. A brand new world is opening up for you and in a way it is like coming home from a long trip. Pace yourself and don’t get caught up in dramas or let your guard down, you may be tested or set-up, perhaps someone wants to know if you are for real.

Risks of too much vitamin C Even though it is an essential nutrient, it's possible to have too much vitamin C (ascorbic acid).

Less salt is not always better The experts have been saying for years that lowering sodium consumption reduces the risk of heart disease, but now a large new study suggests that it may not be quite that simple. Researchers at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, studied an international group of 28,880 men and women over age 55 at high risk for heart disease. They estimated their salt intake by testing their urine and followed the group for almost five years. While the researchers found – not surprisingly –

that a high salt intake significantly increased the risk for heart problems, they also found that too little salt was almost as bad as too much. Compared with those who excreted four to six grams of salt a day, people who excreted only two to three grams had a 19 per cent greater risk of dying of a heart attack, and the less they consumed the greater their risk. Nutritionists

recommend a daily intake of 1.5 grams of salt for people with heart problems, a level that in this study increased the risk for cardiovascular death by 37 per cent. The researchers said it is still important to avoid consuming too much salt, but added that people who are consuming moderate amounts may not have to decrease their intake further.

Vitamin C is a watersoluble vitamin that supports normal growth and development and also helps your body absorb iron. Your body doesn't produce or store vitamin C,

so it's important to include vitamin C in your diet. For most people, a small glass of orange juice plus a serving of strawberries, chopped red pepper or broccoli provides enough vitamin C for the day. Any extra vitamin C will simply be flushed out of your body in your urine. For adults, the recommended upper

limit for vitamin C is 2,000 milligrams (mg) a day. Although too much dietary vitamin C is unlikely to be harmful, megadoses of vitamin C supplements may cause diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, abdominal cramps, headache, insomnia and even kidney stones.

Coffee affects certain medications More than half the adults in the Western world regularly drink two or three cups of coffee a day, aware that it can have side effects like restlessness or trouble falling asleep at night. But coffee and espresso can have other consequences for people taking certain drugs, by either blocking absorption or enhancing their effects. In many cases, the interactions are caused by caffeine, but other compounds in coffee can also play a role. Studies have shown that more than a dozen medications – including antidepressants, estrogen and osteoporosis drugs – can be affected by

coffee consumption. A 2008 study, for example, found that people who drank coffee shortly before or after taking levothyroxine, a common thyroid medication, experienced a reduction of up to 55 per cent in absorption of the drug. Other studies have found that coffee can reduce the absorption of the osteoporosis drug alendronate by up to 60 per

cent and it can lower circulating levels of estrogen and other hormones in women. Some prescription drugs, including some antidepressants, antibiotics and birth control pills, block an enzyme known as CYP1A2, which helps metabolise caffeine. As a result, caffeine may persist in the body for several hours longer than normal.

Jayne Read If you’re thinking of buying a dog or cat for the kids for Christmas, have YOU got the time to stop and sniff the roses, because a dog wants to stop and sniff them all? Have YOU the time to play ball or go for a walk for no reason, because your pet needs that to become socially well adjusted? Have YOU a home that does

Diana Davey Can somebody please try and explain to me the mentality of fare prices on Ryanair? I fly backwards and forwards twice a year with this company from Malaga to Stanstead, London, and back and, to date, have had no complaints, to the point of being especially pleased with them when blizzards brought Stanstead to an absolute standstill causing total chaos, with every other airline cancelling flights while Ryanair soldiered on quite safely.

Duncan Burrell I would like to thank everybody for all the support they have given me over the three years and two weeks I was running JK’s in Coin. With special mention to all my staff: particularly Tracey and Julie who really gave me 100%, and chief glass washer Nick who pulled out all the stops on our last party night – hope the washer-woman hands have healed! Plus everybody who made their last night a very special night for me personally including all our loyal customers, entertainer Frankie B and, Pam – thanks for the cake! I would also like to extend a special “Thank You” to Kym and Geoff from The News who, through thick and thin have been an endless support over the last few years and continue to be so with Siboney, and I wish them the best of luck in their new offices. My advertising with The News has always been a success due to their unstinting help and guidance and I would tell

If you answer NO to ANY of these then maybe the kids would be better off with a doll or a train set.

You may have noticed a very bright ‘Star’ close to the western horizon just after sunset. It isn’t a star it is the planet Venus.

B

Tolox However, recently I was looking up flights for the 9th August next summer for three people to fly from Stanstead and this is what I found: Flight number 8164 Depart 16:00, arrive 19:55. Basic price for 1 person, a no tax price of £62.99 each. However, for three people the regular price was £84.96 each. That is an increase of £12 per person which is a ridiculous situation for the same flights at the same times meaning that, if I want the best price for my family I will have to do three separate bookings!

I simply cannot understand why it would be a tax free price for one person but a “regular” price for three! Can somebody explain the logic of this to me as I shall certainly now consider looking at alternative carriers, even if it costs me initially a little more, out of principle. Editor says: Ah, Ryanair, you’ve just got to love them what next? There’s a very good little ditty on YouTube with Fascinating Aida singing about them!

Coin any business to advertise with The News.... it works! JK’s is now under new management and is presently being managed by Tracey – she has my 100% support and I wish her all the luck. Finally, although I have gone from JK’s, you can all find me in Siboney Bar and Restaurant on the first floor (the floor with the shops on!) at the La Trocha Commercial Centre on the Coin to Cartama road just outside Coin which I will be running with Steve.

ecause Venus is closer in to the Sun than we are it is known as an inferior planet along with Mercury and it never appears very far from the Sun either after sunset or before sunrise giving rise to its romantic title of the Evening Star or Morning Star.

V

enus is the 2nd planet out from the Sun and is the closest planet to the Earth both in distance and in size, it is just slightly smaller than Earth. After the Moon Venus is the brightest ‘natural’ object in the night sky, although the International Space Station can sometimes outshine Venus. It is named after the Roman Goddess of love and beauty and it’s easy to see why with its dazzling brightness, but the truth is far from beautiful.

V

enus goes around the Sun once every 224 days compared to our 365 days but a day on Venus lasts for 243 days so a day on Venus lasts longer than a year! Also while all the other planets in the solar system spin on their axis from west to east Venus spins the opposite direction from east to west. It is hard to imagine what a ‘day’ might look like on Venus with the Sun rising very, very slowly in the west, staying in the sky for more than a year until slowly sinking in the east. That is if you could even see the Sun.

V

enus is completely covered in a dense blanket of clouds so thick that you wouldn’t be able to see more than a few feet in front of you. These clouds are almost 96% carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide, creating a runaway greenhouse effect that is causing the temperature to reach over 460ºC at the surface. It is even hotter than the planet Mercury even though Venus is nearly twice as far from the Sun as Mercury. The pressure at the planet's surface is about 92 times that at Earth's surface — a pressure equivalent to that at a depth of nearly 1 km under Earth's oceans.

T

here are winds of over 300mph and because of the thick atmosphere and pressure it would be like walking through a river of treacle. Volcanoes spew molten sulphur onto the surface and it ‘rains’

sulphuric acid. Venus has been described as the closest thing to Hell that you can imagine.

B

oth the Americans and Russians have sent several probes to Venus over the years but because of the horrendously inhospitable conditions at the surface none have survived more than a few hours before being either melted or crushed. Almost everything we now know about Venus has been collected from orbital probes that have used radar to map the surface. I think that the chances of astronauts ever landing on Venus even in the distant future is very unlikely indeed.

I

f you observe Venus through a telescope over the course of its orbit around the Sun it displays phases similar to those of the Moon. When it is at the far side of the Sun from us it appears as almost fully lit face. Then as it begins its journey it moves further and further away from the glare of the Sun as it gets closer to us. When Venus reaches its maximum to the side of the Sun then only the side facing the Sun is lit and we see a half phase. Then as it begins to move in closer to the Sun the phase gradually gets less and less until it is between the Sun and us and lost in the Sun’s glare.

K

eep your eye on Venus over the next few months as it moves further away from the Sun until the beginning of April 2012 when it will be at its maximum from the Sun and dazzlingly bright in the night sky. Then for the next few months it will gradually move between the Sun and Earth until it reappears at the end of the year as the Morning Star, rising before the Sun in the east.

Motors new Peugeot 208 Money crunching on japanese motorway hatch revealed Peugeot will launch its new 208 supermini in spring 2012. The car will come in three and five-door body styles, and there will be new 3-cylinder petrol engines. Current 1.4 and 1.6 options will be replaced by more efficient 1.0 and 1.2-litre units. In an attempt to improve the driving experience, Peugeot has delved into its past supermini experience (think of the smart handling 205 and 106) to improve road handling and comfort, with particular attention being paid to aerodynamics and suspension. There are strong rumours surrounding a possible 208 GTI, with the Peugeot RCZ’s 197bhp 1.6-litre THP 200 engine a strong candidate for its engine. The iconic 205 GTI was a mixture of lightness and agility, and the 208 will most certainly focus on the same qualities.

Lawn Bowls Miraflores Open Real Sociedad shock This year’s Miraflores Open (sponsored by Caser Seguros) was held from Sat 12th November until Mon 21st November. The entry for the tournament was 25% up on last year which was an excellent achievement in the current economic climate. The weather somehow held for most of the tournament, despite rain being forecast on two of the biggest days for bowls activity, with only 15 minutes play being lost on the Monday when nearly 100 bowlers were in action throughout that day. Rain was also forecast and duly arrived during the last two days of the competition resulting in the loss of two afternoons’ play and finals day being carried over to Monday for the first time in the history of the competition. The good news was that finals day was blessed with blue skies and glorious sunshine which was a bonus for the numerous spectators who turned out to see the day’s play.

Real Sociedad 3 - 2 Malaga

This match was followed by the Triples final between John Green, Kate Morris and John Nagle of Benalmadena BC against Alex Hanton, Michael and Eileen Bone of Los Amigos BC – John, Kate and John winning 2111 when the Los Amigos

trio conceded the match after 16 ends. The men’s singles final had Brian Todd of Benalmadena against Malcolm Greenwood of Benavista, an eagerly awaited match between two of the best bowlers on the Costa del Sol. Brian ran out a worthy 21-16 winner and retained his title which we believe has never happened before.

The main sponsors this year for the first time were Caser Seguros represented on finals day by Roberto Gonzalez (Area Manager). Roberto presented the cash prizes to all the finalists. Thanks were given by Derek Shemmings to the sponsors, together with the umpires, markers and competitors without whom there would be no competition. Men’s singles winner Brian Todd responded with thanks on behalf of all the competitors for having the opportunity to participate in such a well run competition. He also thanked the sponsors and hoped this would be the beginning of a long running involvement between them and Miraflores Bowls Club.

Men and women’s singles winners

The ladies’ singles final saw Pam Shemmings of Miraflores BC against Margaret Kain of Santa Maria – with Pam showing what a good bowler she still is and putting on an excellent display to win 219.

The match began with Malaga making their customary bad start and this was underlined by a Real Sociedad goal. Monreal went missing at left back and a free header from Agirretxe came off the angle deflecting into Demechelis's path who involuntarily knocked the ball into the net on 10 minutes. The lead only lasted 11 minutes though when on 21 minutes a geat cross from Isco was met by Rondon to make it 1-1. In the second half Malaga looked confident and were comfortable and on 59 minutes they went ahead. An innocuous Rondon header forward was chased by Seba and from some bad defending he slotted home. At 2-1 to Malaga the game looked won but with 10 minutes

to go Sociedad started pressing and they had a headed chance on 82 minutes followed by a great save from Caballero on 86 minutes which kept them in front. With just a minute of the game to go this all changed. A cross found Sociedad player Vela inside the box and his brilliant overhead kick found the back of the Malaga net to put Sociedad level. But things

went from bad to worse and deep into added on time another cross found Ifran in the Malaga penalty area and from there he cooly finished to send Sociedad mad. So harsh on Malaga, but that is fooball! Next match is back at La Roselada at 6pm on Sunday versus Osasuna. Report by Scott Forbes

Gold for GB trio Former Paralympic cycling champion Sarah Storey added an able-bodied gold to her medal collection as Great Britain's women won team pursuit gold at the Track World Cup in Cali, Colombia. The 34-year-old, who has won gold medals in both cycling and swimming as a Paralympian, moved up to able-bodied competition after the 2008 Beijing Games and took a first major international title on her World Cup debut alongside team-mates Laura Trott and Wendy Houvenaghel.

The winners of the pairs

The pairs final between Peter and Lyn Metcalfe (well-known former residents and bowlers on the coast, but now back in UK and out here on holiday) against John Sullivan and Kate Morris of Benalmadena BC, was a very closely contested match. Peter and Lyn won the first set on Sunday 113 and went on to win the second set 13-4 and the final.

Malaga in final minutes

The British trio set a time of three minutes and 31.835 seconds, beating New Zealand (3:37.072) in the final. The United States claimed bronze by beating

Lithuania in the bronze medal play-off. The women’s team pursuit collective are the only British representatives at the tournament in Colombia, which is the second of four World Cup meetings this season.

Manchester's Storey, who was was born without a left hand, won two gold medals in swimming as a 14-yearold at the 1992 Paralympics, and has since gone on to collect five swimming gold medals and two in cycling.

Upcoming World darts Gary Anderson aims to go one better at the forthcoming PDC World Championship, having lost in the final last January. And the Scotsman dreams of beating 15-times winner Phil Taylor to clinch the top prize in darts. The tournament runs from 15th December to 2nd January at the Alexandra Palace in London and the 40-year-old opens against Jyhan Artut. "If you want to win the Worlds, you'd want to beat Taylor in the final," Anderson told BBC Scotland.

Woods shot a final round of 69 to win by one shot from fellow American Zach Johnson at 10-under-par 278 in the elite 18-man field at Thousand Oaks in California. The opening date of SnOasis has now been put back to autumn 2014. A BBC investigation has discovered more hold-ups with plans to build the world's first indoor winter sports resort in Suffolk. The £320m SnOasis project, which includes a 400m (1,312ft) ski slope, bobsleigh run and ice skating complex, is already seven years behind schedule. The company, Onslow Suffolk Ltd, has not yet obtained a licence to relocate up to 1,000 protected newts. Developer Godfrey Spanner denies he is behind schedule. He blames hold-ups on the planning process and says he has the bank loans, investors and contractors ready to go.

Nadal helps Spain to Davis Cup win Rafael Nadal beat Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in a thrilling match to secure the Davis Cup for Spain. World number two Nadal lost six games in a row in the first set but came back superbly to win a high-class encounter 1-6, 6-4 ,6-1,7-6 (7-0) in Seville. The victory was his 16th successive win in Davis Cup singles on clay and gave the hosts an unassailable 3-1 lead. However Nadal said his busy schedule, which includes the Olympics, meant he would not play in the Davis Cup in 2012.
