Celebrating our third birthday! The News is three years old this week. We would like to thank all our friends and supporters for continuing to believe in us. REGRETS OVER DAMAGE CAUSED - NATIONAL NEWS
Royal son-in-law excluded The Duke of Palma, a former Olympic handball player, has agreed not to take part in official duties for the foreseeable future. The announcement was made by the head of the king's household, Rafael Spottorno, on Monday, after weeks of royal silence on the scandal surrounding him. Mr Spottorno said the duke's behaviour "does not seem exemplary", but added that he had the right to be presumed innocent. It is not clear whether his wife, the king's youngest daughter Princess Cristina, will be affected. When asked about her status Mr Spottorno replied “We'll see”.
Inaki Urdangarin, who married Princess Cristina in 1999, is being investigated over claims he misused public funds given to a foundation he ran, although exact details of the accusations against him have not been made public. According to the media, the duke is accused of misdirecting part of some of €6m paid to his not-forprofit Noos Institute by regional governments to organise sporting events. Some of the money
allegedly ended up in forprofit companies which he ran. He stepped down as head of the institute in 2006. Over the weekend, the Duke, who has denied any wrong-doing over the events from 2004 to 2006, said that neither the royal family nor his wife had anything to do with the institute or his private companies and regretted any "damage" caused. ICKHAM’S
WORLD Greetings from Sydney!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
As I mentioned last week, we are off on our “holiday of a lifetime” for my husband’s 60th birthday. I am an awful traveller so the twelve-and-a-half hour, then one-hour stop-over, then another eight-and-a-half hour plane journeys were horrible. I don’t know about you but, being only 5´ tall, I think whoever designed aeroplane seats should have something nasty done to them! The headrests are in such a position at my height that the so-called neck rests hit the back of your head and, as for sleeping on a plane…. Forget it.

been demanding years.
This Parliament is dominated by public service officials (126) and lawyers (51) but there are also 19 doctors, two veterinarians, an actor, a former farmer and an orthopaedic technician to contribute some variety, along with 24 university professors, nine economists, six businessmen and five journalists, among others. Of the 350 MPs 139 are
making their appearance for the first time. There are 124 women – 66 from the PP, 42 Socialists, five from the CiU, three from Izquierda Unida. Two from the UP&D (Union, Progress and Democracy party) and one each from the nationalist parties Amaiur, PNV, ERC, Coalición Canaria and Geroa Bai. Most of the MPs have been to university but one put down “basic studies” and 18 have “other studies”. All the MPs’ details are available on Parliament's web page.
It is the first time that the royal family has been threatened by a scandal of this magnitude. More than 70 per cent of the population accept the country's parliamentary monarchy and King Juan Carlos is accredited with steering the country through the transition from dictatorship to democracy.

Anyway, we are booked into the Y on the Park where we have stayed before and the staff couldn’t be nicer. We are here for four days and rain is forecast every day but, we’re Brits and not sugar lumps that will melt so we’ll have a good time despite the weather! We have just got back from a day’s walking around the city and, luckily after having bought brollies, the weather although dull, hasn’t been too bad. The famous QVB with all its shops and food outlets was our first port of call then we were off to The Rocks which is an area like a village that is just under the Sydney bridge. A visit to the zoo, Bondi beach, The Rocks, maritime museum, opera house and darling Harbour are on the cards.

The new members of the Upper and Lower Houses took their seats on Tuesday in ceremonies carried out simultaneously to save dragging out the process for two days. It was also the last time José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero entered the building as outgoing prime minister. The choices of incoming prime minister Mariano Rajoy to preside over the two Houses were voted in easily, given the Partido Popular's absolute majority. The relatively unknown Jesús Posada will preside the Upper House and the new Speaker is Pío GarcíaEscudero. Both men are known to be moderates and adept at mediating between opposing parties.

Ex-regional premier goes on trial The long-awaited trial of Valencia's former regional premier Francisco Camps finally got under way on Monday with more than 100 reporters accredited to cover it, who turned his arrival at the court into a major media event. Camps categorically denied the charges of bribery for allegedly accepting dress suits and other accessories worth €14,000 from the corrupt Gürtel business network, saying “I am absolutely innocent and confident of refuting these charges”. The Gürtel network is believed to have received multi-million-euro contracts from the local Popular Party (PP) government. Camps served
as Valencia's regional premier from 2003 until July this year, when he resigned after his indictment. The prosecution's star witness is a former sales manager at a Madrid men's shop, who will testify how he went to the Ritz Hotel, where Camps was staying, to take measurements for his dress suits. It will also call a former tailor at Forever Young, one of the establishments where
Camps got his suits, who will describe how his bosses ordered him to remove all the billing records in connection with the purchases. Ricardo Costa, the former PP secretary general in Valencia, is also standing trial with Camps. It is the first case in the huge Gürtel bribes-for-contracts scandal that has many ramifications in Madrid as well as Valencia. Even before the first day was out,
the trial stumbled into its first hurdle – the prosecution and the defence had not completed the jury selection process, which began at 10am. Presiding Judge Juan Climent also accepted the petitions to be excused by six potential jurors – three are over 65, the age limit for jurors; one has a small child for whom temporary care is unavailable; another suffers from constant migraines;

Two very different visions of ETA The latest opinion poll carried out by the Centre of Sociological Research (CIS) reveals a huge difference in perceptions of the Basque terrorist group by the Spaniards in general and the Basques in particular.
Alcohol controls stepped up The Traffic Authority is reviving its 1985 campaign by Stevie Wonder in an attempt to reduce alcohol-related deaths on the road this Christmas. In addition to Wonder's “If you drink, don't drive” video, the Guardia Civil will be carrying out 20,000 breathalyser tests at 1,000 control points across the country every day until Sunday, December 18th – double the number carried out in the same period last year. The campaign is aimed specifically at
Wonder's popular video was made at a time when drunk-driving was responsible for 50% of road deaths. While increasing numbers of drivers are aware of the dangers of drinking and driving, the Guardia Civil breathalyser control points nabbed more than 81,000 drunk drivers last year.
Christmas lunches and dinners so the Guardia will be active from the early afternoon onwards, not just at night. Trafico has asked more than 25,000 municipalities to join in the campaign and provide breathalyser control points in towns and cities as well.
The poll shows that only a third of Spaniards believe the last ETA ceasefire will last as opposed to two thirds of Basques, a majority of whom believe that terrorism has ended. Nearly 60 per cent of Spaniards doubt that it
has. Political observers believe the disparity in perceptions is due to the fact that the Basques know what is really happening in their region while in the rest of Spain, all people can see is ETA's bloodstained career.
Partial cannabis legalisation proposed Basque regional deputy health chief Jesús María Fernández said during his presentation of the VI Addictions Plan 2011-2015 on Monday that it is better to "regulate rather than prohibit behaviour which is already established in our society". He said the Basque regional parliament intends to amend its
Addiction Law to allow for the "cultivation, sale and consumption" of hashish and marijuana. Regional health chief Rafael Bengoa explained the amendment would allow over-18s to consume cannabis in a "responsible" manner. They will be provided with all necessary information about the consequences and respecting the health rights of others.

Iberia pilots’ strike restricted Civil aviation director Manuel Ameijeiras has made public a resolution that orders Iberia to fly at least 50 per cent of its routes during the proposed pilots' strikes on December 18th and 29th. The airline has also been ordered to guarantee half of its routes to Spanish and European cities and 25 per cent of the flights that are less than 500 kilometres or less than five hours, during
the walk-out days. Iberia will also have to guarantee at least one one-way transAtlantic flight to a dozen or so destinations to which the carrier normally has more than one daily service. The pilots' union Sepla has said it will appeal the restrictions to lessen the impact of the planned stoppages. The pilots are protesting against Iberia's plans to form a low-cost airline, Iberia Express.
Illegal immigrants adopt new tactic Using the so-called gauntlet run, 68 subSaharans managed to get into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta last week. The tactic involves forming groups of up to 100 to overpower Moroccan police before swimming the final stretch of their journey to Ceuta. Not all of them make it – it took three gauntlet runs to get the 68 men across the border.

The owner of La Bruja de Oro (The Golden Witch) lottery sales point in Sorte which has sold three winning Gordo numbers and two winning Niño numbers (the January 6th lottery), the most asked for numbers end in 7, 9, 5, 6, 8 and 3 and the least asked for end in 4, 2, 1 and 0. Xavier Gabriel says people who are guided by past winning numbers want the 5 (which has turned up twice in every ten winning
numbers for several decades) followed by the 4 and the 6, which have each appeared once in every ten winning numbers. The least popular number is the 1, which has only ended the winning number eight times since El Gordo was first drawn on December 18th, 1812. The favourite two-digit endings are 85, 57, 64, 66, 75 and 95, all of which have cropped up regularly. On the other hand, the winning Gordo number has never ended in 09, 10, 13, 21, 25, 31, 34, 41, 42, 43, 51, 54, 59, 67, 78 or 82. And in the past 20 years numbers between 40,000 and 49,999 have won seven times. Favourite dates this year include the
dates of the Duchess of Alba's wedding (51011), the Pope's visit to Madrid (18811, 19811, 20811 and 21811), the death of Gadaffi (20101) which was also the date of the last ETA ceasefire declaration. Other special numbers include the date of deaths of singers Rocío Jurado (01606) and Rocío Durcal (25306), Franco (20115), the bullfighter Paquirri

Spain has most overqualified workers A Eurostat study based on 2008 figures showed that Spain was the EU country with the highest number of overqualified workers – that is, people with a university degree or vocational training certificate who hold a job beneath their training level. Can we have our drone back please ?
The President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, said on Monday that he hopes a new fiscal deal will be signed by most EU states by early March. He was reporting to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on last week's EU summit, which discussed deeper economic integration in the Eurozone, at which the UK vetoed a new treaty for the
27-member EU, arguing it had to protect Britain's financial services industry. But at least 23 other EU states agreed to forge ahead with deeper ties, envisaging an intergovernmental treaty, or "compact", on
stricter fiscal rules, designed to allow closer monitoring of countries' spending, to avoid a repetition of the Eurozone's current debt crisis. Speaking after Mr Van Rompuy, European
Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said Britain's demand for special treatment would have harmed the single market. He said: "This compromise made impossible."

A Saudi woman was executed on Monday for practising "witchcraft and sorcery", according to an interior ministry statement published by the state news agency. police as saying that she was in her 60s and had tricked people into giving her money, claiming that she could cure their illnesses. She was arrested in April 2009 but the human rights group Amnesty International, which has campaigned for
Saudis previously sentenced to death on sorcery charges, said it had never heard of her case until now. A Sudanese man was executed in September on similar charges, despite calls led by Amnesty for his release. Amnesty said that Saudi Arabia does not
actually define sorcery as a capital offence. However, some of its conservative clerics have urged the strongest possible punishments against fortune-tellers and faith healers as a threat to Islam.

Noriega extradited to Panama Former strong man Manuel Noriega was extradited back to Panama from France on Sunday and taken straight to a prison. He was convicted in absentia of crimes committed during his time in power in the 1980s. The 77-year-old has already spent more than 20 years in prisons in France and the United States. Last month, a French court approved a request from Panama to send him back home to be jailed over his convictions for murder, corruption and
embezzlement. He had the right to appeal, but his lawyers said he wanted to return to Panama. Although he was never president, General Manuel Noriega served as Panama's de facto leader between 1983 to 1989. Once a US ally, he was arrested by invading American troops in January 1990, amid allegations he had turned the Central
American nation into a drug-trafficking hub. He now faces three 20year jail terms for crimes committed during his rule, including the murders of political opponents, but it is unclear whether he will remain in prison, as Panama allows people aged 70 years and above to serve their sentences at home.
Health boss ‘took $11m in a week’ Senior Australian health official Joel Barlow was arrested on Monday after allegedly stealing AU$11m (£7m) in just one week. The authorities said Barlow stole a total of AU$16m over three years from Queensland Health, where he worked as a finance manager. After the arrest, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said the health
department would be dismantled. She said the enormity of the fraud was the "final chapter in the life of the ailing agency". The police said it was one of the most significant fraud cases in the history of Australia. They said Barlow – whose full name is Hohepa Morehu-Barlow – apparently diverted funds
intended for charities and private service providers into his own bank account, stealing $5m over three years. He then allegedly siphoned off $11m in one transaction at some time during the past two weeks. Barlow was arrested in a Brisbane suburb after a manhunt that lasted all weekend.

UK News Clash in Cabinet Chris Huhne insisted that Ministers should have been consulted on David Cameron's EU negotiating strategy. The growing tension over Europe lingered over the Downing Street meeting. A spokesperson for Mr. Cameron stated the negotiating strategy had been agreed in advance with Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg. The Deputy Prime Minister was reportedly furious when he heard that Cameron had refused to join the new treaty to aid the Eurozone crisis. He said that Cameron’s decision could leave Britain isolated in Europe and was a bad thing for the country. On Tuesday the Prime Minister told MPs that he

Crucial New Lead in Lawrence Case Police searching for missing Claudia Lawrence have said they have a new lead. Lawrence, who was 35 when she vanished, was reported missing in 2009 after failing to turn up for work as a chef at the University of York. Police say that a potentially "crucial" new witness had come forward. Detective Supt Ray Galloway said the new information related to the time of Ms Lawrence's

Leeds Deaths Initiate Murder Inquiry Police in Leeds believe that the four bodies that were discovered on Sunday, were part of a murder-suicide. It is presumed that the father Richard Smith, stabbed his wife Clair and his two sons, nine-year-old Ben and one-year-old Aaron.

Post mortem examinations show that Mrs Smith and her children suffered stab wounds while Richard Smith died of smoke inhalation. Detective Superintendent Paul Taylor, said she died from a single stab wound to her chest, as did baby Aaron. Phone Hacking Twist There is a new twist in the phone hacking scandal after it was revealed that the News of The World may not have deleted Milly Dowler’s messages after all. Milly Dowler was a 13-yearold girl who was abducted and on her way home from school in Surrey in March 2002, and murdered. Her body was discovered on 18th September 2002. The voicemails were erased several days after the teenager went missing and gave her parents hope that their daughter was still alive. Now it appears that the messages were probably deleted automatically by the phone system, 72 hours after they had been listened to. The NOTW was closed down and all the staff laid off after it was discovered journalists from the paper had hacked Milly’s phone. But it was the idea that heartless eavesdroppers from the Sunday tabloid had purposely removed the messages from handset, giving Milly’s parents something to cling to, which really appalled the public and hastened the paper’s demise. The Leveson Inquiry into press standards heard
on Monday that a Metropolitan Police investigation revealed the voice messages were “unlikely” to have been deliberately deleted, and that Milly’s phone had a 72 hour automatic deletion device installed. Guardian journalist Nick Davies, who co-wrote the original story alleging NOTW reporters hacked in to Milly’s phone, defended his article. He said the article was about the wider issue of hacking into the girl’s voicemails as opposed to the actual deleting of messages.

Following the latest revelation, several former NOTW staff have used Twitter to demand an apology.

High Street Xmas Crisis
reats force removal of stag's head
It has emerged that more than 50% of total consumer spending now takes place away from the High Street for the first time in British history.
After being “bombarded” with threats, the head of a giant red deer stag, believed to have been the biggest wild land animal in the UK, has been taken down from the wall of the Hartnoll Hotel in Bolham, near Tiverton in Devon.
The youths aged between 14 and 17 were arrested over the incident and later bailed pending further inquiries. LeicesTershire
Test tampering head teacher of a Primary school in Market harborough, Aleksander Grubisic has left his post following an investigation after an examination watchdog analysed school test papers and found they had been tampered with. Mr Grubisic admitted he had altered the stage 2 test papers. The Qualifications and curriculum Development Agency (QcDA) started the investigation after the Key stage 2 examinations for year six pupils at the school earlier this year. But the pupils, who are now at year seven in another school, will be relieved to hear they do not have to retake the tests.
The statistic was revealed alongside the publication of a report compiled by retail expert Mary Portas. Portas, TV star from Mary Queen of Shops, blamed the growth of online retailing, the rise of shopping by mobile phone, shopping centres and the recession. She has come up with a plan to rejuvenate the UK’s ailing High Streets, some of which she claims are in crisis. Her independent review, which was carried out at the request of the Prime Minister, said town centre vacancy rates had doubled over the past two years. “Unless urgent action is taken, much of Britain will lose – irretrievably –
something that is fundamental to our society” she said. The fact is that the major supermarkets and shopping centres have delivered highly convenient, needs-based retailing, which serves today’s consumers well. Sadly, the High Street didn’t adapt as quickly or as effectively. Now they need to. Portas want to see licensing rules relaxed and a national market day introduced. She also wants free parking in certain areas, and some form of High Street management systems to form coherent policies, as well as a review fo business rates and shop rents.
No complaints were made to the police about the threats by telephone and email. A hotel employee, who did not want to be named, confirmed that the stag's head had been taken down on Monday. She declined to say what the threats were and could not say why the police had not been contacted. Pendle Witch Cottage and Cat Discovered A cottage believed to be linked to the Witches of Pendle and a mummified cat have been unearthed by workmen in Lancashire.
The site, described by one archaeologist as "Lancashire’s Pompeii", was discovered during a construction project. Engineers found the 17thcentury cottage during excavations near the Lower Black Moss reservoir in Pendle and now experts think it could be connected to the famous Pendle Witches – especially as a mummified cat was found sealed into one of the walls. It is thought the cat may have been entombed in the wall while still alive, possibly in the 19th century, as paranormal protection. Simon Entwistle, an expert on the Pendle Witches, said: "Cats feature prominently in
folklore about witches. Whoever consigned this cat to such a horrible fate was clearly seeking protection from evil spirits.” building also The contains many 19thcentury artefacts such as
crockery, a cooking range and a bedstead. The United Utilities' engineering project has been put on hold while the archaeologists complete their investigation of the site.

Couple bring ghost village back to life El Acebuchal was evacuated by the Guardia Civil in 1948 because they suspected its 200 residents were harbouring the Maquis – remnants of the Second Republic´s army who had taken refuge in the surrounding hills from which they waged war on the Franco regime. The local people left the village, located seven kilometres from Frigiliana in the Almijara mountains, so fast that they left most of their belongings behind. The Guardia Civil had won their battle with the Maquis by 1951 but the villagers were too frightened to return and continued living with relatives in nearby towns. The only signs of life in the town were in the summers, when one bar and one venta catered to the muleteers on their way from villages in the Granada mountains to buy and sell produce in the lowland towns. However, one couple, Virtudes and Antonio Sanchez, kept faith with the village and visited it on feast days and holidays with their children to stay in the house left behind by her father. In 1998, they bought two houses in the town and restored them “to the way they were before”. They had noticed that rural tourism was becoming more popular and decided it would save El Acebuchal. They set about restoring the houses, paid for water and electricity to be connected out of their own pockets and even installed a sewage system. In all, they bought and restored seven houses to their original state and finally opened a bar in 2005. Over the years, some of the original inhabitants returned to see how the couple and their two sons were faring and little by little, they decided to return to live in the village, even if only for the summer. Today only one of the 36 houses in the village is still in ruins, although only three are occupied all year round – two by Virtudes and Antonio and one of their sons while a British couple moved there some years ago to bring up
their children in the healthy atmosphere of the Axarquia. The return to El Acebuchal was not easy for Virtudes and Antonio because of the memories they had of it. One of Virtudes' uncles had joined the Maquis and was killed as he prepared to give himself up to the Guardia. He was shot in the back some 500 metres from the village, in

Town anything but blue For many residents the best thing that ever happened to the town was to be painted blue for the Smurfs film in June. War on the wild boars Wild boars were hunted out of existence in Malaga province 300 years ago but they have filtered back, attracted by the easy food pickings. They are now almost as common as rabbits in some areas and are wreaking a lot of damage on crops, golf courses and even rubber tubing used in irrigation systems. In an effort to keep the numbers down, the Junta de Andalucia is authorising the occasional hunt in mountain areas, like the one recently near Alcaucin when 52 boars were bagged. CUEVAS BAJAS
Importance of eco-agriculture Half of the land in Spain – some 870,000 hectares – dedicated to ecological agriculture is in Andalucia, mainly plots owned by small farmers. Opening a conference on ecological horticulture and diversity in Cuevas Bajas, near Antequera, last week to enable producers, researchers and experts to share their knowledge and experiences, Mayor Manuel Ginez and provincial government representative Monica Bermudez underlined the economic importance of this type of agriculture – production costs are low which raises the profit margin for farmers.

“Diagnosis: e dog is mad” Diagnosis: The dog is demented. Prognosis: Er, let’s see, how can I put this…? Recommended treatment: Send him back to the pound! Unbelievably, some dog owners – especially those who have adopted dogs from rescue centres – which are, incidentally, the ones I most love dealing with – are reluctant to engage the services of a canine psychologist, simply through fear that he/she will report back to them along the lines of the above. In fact, I was once asked by an anxious owner at the end of a consultation, “So… is he a basket case?” Far from it; to a good dog psychologist, there is no such thing as a “mad dog”. Chances are, he is just behaving like a dog that is trying to adapt to the circumstances as he perceives them. The dog psychologist’s task is to find a way to modify the dog’s behaviour to a level that is acceptable to its owners and compatible with their lifestyle. This is achieved

through what we call behaviour modification techniques, using positive reinforcement. As Jean Donaldson says in her book “The Culture Clash”, we’d all love to have Walt Disney’s dog(s); the ones that understand the value of our belongings, instinctively know the difference between “good people” and “bad people”, know when we are in trouble and exactly how to find help, etc., etc. Unfortunately, in the real world, a dog’s brain is not wired-up to do these things instinctively. Dogs do have an enormous capacity for learning, but teaching them takes time, patience and knowledge of the methods to be used. So, exactly what is “problem behaviour”? Quite
simply, any behaviour the owners find it difficult to live with or is affecting the dog’s well-being. Each dog/owner relationship is unique in this respect and very different approaches may be required in each case. We left Malaga on Thursday morning, travelling to London for a couple of days to stay with friends before our mega journey here on Saturday. Arriving at Gatwick, our friend picked us up from the airport and took us to his home in Greenford, West London where we had a convivial afternoon and evening with him, his Ukrainian wife, daughter and her father who is over in the UK for a while. On Friday we journeyed by bus into Ealing, then underground train to Westminster whereupon we boarded a boat for a ride along the river to Greenwich. As it was nearly two o’clock, we stopped for lunch in a farmers’ market where they had many different dishes on offer
including a golden breadcrumbed rice ball that had cheese and spinach rolled into the middle – now there’s something different! – and hot roast beef rolls. After lunch we all trooped off to the Greenwich Maritime Museum. I wanted to go there as a friend had recently lent me a book on the invention of longitude. Latitude had been successfully mapped and agreed years before but sailors and their craft were constantly dashing themselves on the rocks as they knew where they were longitude-wise, but hadn’t got a clue how far west or east they were and many lives had been lost. The powers-that-be decided to offer a reward of five thousand pounds to anyone who could devise a way of accurately measuring longitude from sea. As you can imagine there were some wild and wonderful schemes but it took years before a man named Harrison came up with his first clock, the H1, which was tested at sea and was declared to be workable.
However, Harrison was a perfectionist so carried on working until he came up with a useable timepiece that could be easily transported and it looks something like an enormous pocket watch. These clocks are now kept in the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Harrison was eventually given his reward but was very nearly pipped at the post by a Frenchman who thought that 0º longitude should be kept in France, and his method of calculating longitude was very similar to that of Harrison. They still work out where they are by having a clock that keeps Greenwich Meantime and another at local time and in this way they can deduce where they are on the longitude scale. What a clever stick Harrison was, and 0º is still universally accepted as being calculated from at Greenwich, except of course by the French who are trying right now to have it moved! from Kym Wickham, Down Under

Right on, Rajoy

I
t has been annus horribilis for the Spanish royals. First, King Juan Carlos in June had to undergo knee surgery that kept him off his feet for some months and away from his usual monarchical duties. Then in October he underwent another procedure to his Achilles tendon on his left foot – a small operation but still nonetheless discomforting. Last month, he appeared at a public ceremony sporting a nice shiner and Band Aid on his nose that he attributed to “bumping into a door.” But these mishaps are minor compared to the brewing storm raging over the Borbóns from the scandal surrounding Infanta Cristina’s husband who is under investigation for allegedly diverting public money to his own private companies.
I
couldn’t help laughing when I saw this photo of Mariano Rajoy at a meeting in Marseille last week. I thought – that’s it, boyo, start out the way you intend to carry on. I don’t know if he was allocated that seat just behind Merkel and Sarkozy, or if he managed to nab it for himself. If it was chosen for him, it indicates the importance “Merkozy” have already assigned him. If he got it under his own steam, that indicates – to me at least – that he has no intention of being a wallflower at international meetings, unlike Zapatero who frequently looked lost and lonely. Observers said it was because he doesn’t speak English, the lingua franca at international meetings these days. I always thought it was because he felt uncomfortable and a bit out of his depth. Zapatero only felt secure when he was surrounded by his minions.
R
ajoy apparently doesn’t speak English either but at the meetings in France last week, he seemed quite happy to use an interpreter. In any case, interpreters are always used at international meetings to avoid any misunderstandings arising from a lessthan-fluent grasp of the official language used. Sarkozy, for example, speaks Spanish because his first wife was Spanish and he never used an interpreter when speaking out of microphone range with Zapatero. But he always makes any official pronouncement in French. Merkel can also be seen chatting away in English at these meetings, but makes official statements in German. I suspect Rajoy is probably already taking a crash course in English.
I
’ve been watching Zapatero and Rajoy in action since January 2003. Zapatero appeared on the telly more because he was the leader of the opposition before winning the March 2004 election. Rajoy became more prominent when the then PM Jose Maria Aznar selected him as the PP’s candidate in that election. I’ve watched them under
stress, haranguing supporters at rallies, or usually ignoring each other when their paths crossed in public. Zapatero likes “grand gestures” which more often than not got him into trouble because he always promised more than he could deliver – hence his interminable Uturns. Rajoy doesn’t make promises unless he’s sure he can keep them. Zapatero said he was going to be nice to the opposition, unlike Aznar who openly and arrogantly despised anyone left of centre – especially Zapatero. Zapatero made a point of belittling Rajoy on the slightest pretext, while Rajoy’s barbs at Zapatero were usually more lethal.
B
oth men are married to women who prefer to stay in the background. However, Zapatero's wife Sonsoles carried on with her career as a singer in a choir and is said to have been a deciding factor in his decision not to run again for PM – that and the fact that he knew he wasn't going to win.
I
ñaki Urdangarin’s legal problems are just beginning. The Duke of Palma, who is married to the king’s youngest daughter, will reportedly be indicted in the coming weeks by a Palma de Mallorca judge leading the inquiry into Urdangarin’s businesses. The entire affair has thrown the royal household into disarray. Never since the restoration of democracy in 1975 has a crisis of this dimension rocked the Borbón family. The proceedings and imminent charges are being taken so seriously by the royals that the king decided this week to begin posting breakdowns of his family’s spending habits on the web by the end of the year.
T
B
here is no evidence or suggestions that anyone in the family other than Urdangarin may have profited from the alleged siphoning-off of public money. The 43-year-old former Spanish Olympic handball team player, who married Infanta Cristina in 1999, is a target in a massive public investigation case that began with irregularities in the awarding of a public contract to build a sport arena in the Balearic Islands. As they were sifting through the evidence, tax investigators said they found two questionable contracts for €3.3 million that were awarded to Urdangarin’s nonprofit Nóos Institute by the then-Balearic government of Jaume Matas of the Popular Party (PP) during the 2005-2006 period. The money was to go to pay for the celebration of a two-day convention to promote sports and tourism activities but investigators say that the event didn’t cost that much to organise. Matas, meanwhile has been indicted in the bigger sports arena case.
W
uthorities also uncovered similar contracts Nóos signed with the Valencia regional government – headed at the time by Francisco Camps, also of the PP – worth close to another €3 million. A subsequent audit found that a lot of the money was funnelled into Urdangarin’s private for-profit
R
ajoy's wife, Elvira Fernández Balboa, has once again given up her career as she did in 1996 when her then fiancée was active in the campaign that ended with the election of José Maria Aznar. She went back to her job with Antenna 3 TV channel and this time she has given up her job making videos for Telefónica Contenidos. While she shuns the limelight, people who know the couple say she is 100 per cent behind her husband.
oth men have two children. Zapateros's two teenage daughters caused a bit of a fuss when they turned up at a White House reception a couple of years ago looking like Goths. It's doubtful that the Rajoys' two sons – Mariano aged 8 and Juan aged 2 – are being brought up quite so liberally. e all know how Zapatero ended his political career. How Rajoy's politicial career will develop remains to be seen.

companies, which commingled both employees, services and accounting with the non-profit Nóos Institute.
U
rdangarin, Infanta Cristina and their four children moved to Washington in 2009 reportedly to keep clear of the investigation. As soon as reports came out that Urdangarin was possibly facing charges, the king scrambled to stifle the blistering scandal. First, Zarzuela Palace announced that it was bringing to a close Urdangarin’s official duties. He will no longer appear with the royal family at official ceremonies even though he remains a duke and royal son-in-law. Secondly, the king has offered to make public how he portions the estimated €8.4 million he receives annually through a budget allotment set by Congress. It is a meagre sum compared to the estimated €52 million the British royal family receives yearly and the €40 million Queen Beatrix and the House of Orange in the Netherlands are allotted. Still, as the economic crisis grips and anti-monarchy movements flourish among nationalists in the Basque Country and Catalonia, there has been growing concern about the Spanish royals’ expenditures. For years, Zarzuela Palace kept the breakdowns confidential by arguing that Article 65 of the Constitution provides that the king can split the money any way he wants among his family. But now, the Urdangarin scandal has dismantled that argument.
T
he troubled son-in-law says through a spokesman that not only is he is “concerned” about the investigation but also “outraged” by media reports that he will soon be indicted. Urdangarin also apologised for the embarrassment and distress he has caused the king and his family. But Rafael Spottorno, the Zarzuela palace spokesman, pretty much summed up King Juan Carlos’ feelings when he said on Monday that Urdangarin’s behaviour “is not becoming” for a member of the royal family. In other words, King Juan Carlos is royally p’d off!

DAVID THE DOGMAN Close Supervision In order to housebreak your puppy, you have to supervise him at all time especially when outside his crate or newspaper covered area. When he starts sniffing the floor, circling or running around, he is giving signs that he needs to eliminate so bring him immediately to your properly designated area. If your puppy defecates in the wrong place, stop him by saying NO in a loud assertive tone. Apply deodorizer on places where he eliminated so he
will not go there again. Potty place must be free of distractions; your pup must not consider play a part of potty.
Confinement When your puppy is left alone in your home; it is recommended that he must be placed in a crate or confined area. Confinement is a good way to keep your puppy safe and prevent housetraining accidents. However, it should not be used as a form of punishment, for isolating pets for a long time, can be
very detrimental to your pet. Confinement can be the source of behavioural problems like excessive barking, self-mutilation, digging and hyperactivity. Puppies also need the essentials like exercise, daily companionship and playtime. Email David at david@thedogman.net with your questions.

Best paws forward Pet pooches of all shapes and sizes were on parade at the charity dog show held recently at Finca los Erales in Alhaurin el Grande. The event was organised jointly by animal charities ARCH and CHAIN and incorporated their annual Christmas Fayre with a variety of stalls selling festive merchandise. Tiny chihuahuas rubbed shoulders with blue-eyed huskies and lolloping Labradors as well as a host of “Heinz 57s”, not to mention an impressive bulldog named George! Classes ranged from prettiest
female and most handsome male to a Christmas themed fancy dress which produced some impressive entries – two Santa's sleighs in little and large versions, Rudolph the red-nosed hound, a Dachshund Christmas cracker and the eventual winner, curly coated spaniel Molly aka the Grinch!
It was a beautiful sunny day and most of the competitors behaved themselves, though pride of place must be given to the obedience trained German Shepherd Bonny who entertained the spectators during the interval with impeccable behaviour. The organisers, judges and stall-holders all worked incredibly hard to make the day a success and the proceeds will go to help abused and abandoned animals. For more information about both these animal charities go to their websites: www.chainin spain.com and www.horserescuespain.org

Picardo is a socialist lawyer and politician and his political triumph is the dawning of a new era for Gibraltar. He said that the GSD leader Caruana had done “many good things for Gibraltar”. The Liberals won 10 of the Parliament’s
17 seats with 48.88% of the vote, with an exceptionally high turnout of 81.4%. GSD obtained 46.76%. Moments before the results were officially declared Caruana was given a standing of ovation and shook hands with Picado.
Originating from the natural juice, extra virgin olive oil is obtained by cold extraction from the finest olives by employing nothing but traditional methods. With the expressed juice being the only ingredient, extra virgin olive oil is an element that goes beyond mere gastronomy and is linked
to the most authentic tradition, culture and history of the Mediterranean world. Situated in the rich Guadalquivir valley, the family Castlel of Canena gives its extra virgin oils their name. The fortress was built by the Arabs on the ruins of a Roman castrum. It was partitioned under the Order of Calatrava and formed part of the fortress defensive belt known as “the vanguard” which made up the frontier with the Arabs for the 200 years that followed the battle of Navas de Tolosa. In 1538, during the time of emperor Charles V, it became a Castle – Palace. Today it is admired as one of the most beautiful examples of Andalusian Renaissance.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows By Guy Ritchie, Starring Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Jared Harris The game is afoot again for sleuthing twosome Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr) and Dr Watson (Jude Law), as Guy Ritchie turns out another roistering romp designed to drive the purists mad – Basil Rathbone it ain't.
with reptilian charm by Jared Harris. The Crown Prince of Austria dies and Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan) puts it down to suicide. But Holmes suspects murder, and believes it is linked to a series of bomb attacks which are destabilising Europe. The clues lead to the well-respected academic Moriarty and it is up to Holmes and Watson to expose the evil genius and halt his plan to change the course of history. They team up with
gypsy Sim (Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, in her first English speaking role) and travel from London, France and Germany, before the final showdown at a peace conference at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. Much like the first outing, it's a pacy adventure in which Holmes packs a punch as well as drawing on his superb intelligence. The
slo-mo used in the first movie to illustrate Holmes' thinking processes is used to good effect here, and the special effects, explosions and highoctane energy keep everything clipping along at top speed. Stephen Fry appears as Mycroft, Sherlock's older, smarter brother, and at one point wanders around his home naked. Not a scene to be found in the Conan Doyle canon, but who cares? Top hole fun for the festive season.
Bright Examples Indeed

The first movie was a big hit, and this follow-up is set to delight the fans. Holmes is up against the man set to become his greatest adversary – the evil criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty, played
Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion’s “Bright Examples” is a rare gem, it’s the kind of album you can just play over and over and never tire of it. Granddaughter of the
infamous Woody Guthrie and daughter of Arlo Guthrie, Sara Lee has some rather large shoes to fill, but she does it effortlessly with the help of her husband Johnny Irion.
CENTRO DE IDIOMAS
It’s not surprising that these two get on so well, as Irion is the grand-nephew of John Steinbeck. Strangely enough Sarah Lee didn’t play or sing until she met Irion. Irion taught her to play the guitar and unlocked her inner performer.

“Bright Examples” was produced by Jayhawks Mark Olsen and Gary Louris. From opening tracks “Ahead of Myself” – a dreamy, wafting ballad of self discovery – or the harsher-sounding acoustic folk rock of “Never Far From My Heart’, there's a
chemistry between them that echoes the tight-knit nature of the two bands those songs respectively most resemble: Beach House and The Jayhawks. There's a natural charm to “Bright Examples” that swims into focus when, for example, Guthrie discovers on Butterflies that "I'm beginning to notice your eyes" with a perfect sense of breathless surprise. “Never Far from My Heart" opens wonderfully with the couple's vocal
harmonies and the acoustic guitar. The 'together we can do it’ spirit rings throughout. The guitar, drums, and bass, support the vocals so well. It's incredibly refreshing to witness joy and contentment as a driving force. A wonderful record – just don't expect it to set the world to rights.
T
here are many great songs and there are many great movies, but not many of them make it to the big screen. Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant Massacre” isn’t really a song, more of a long story with music, but either way you look at it, it’s a classic and so is the movie.
A
rlo Guthrie is no actor, but he's actually quite good in this because you do feel that, while he's obviously acting, he's also trying to be himself and so you get some insight into the man. Patricia Quinn exudes an earthy vitality as Alice, while James Broderick as her husband Ray seems strangely at odds with the rest of the cast. Maybe it's his age or the cowboy-ish clothes, which make him look something like a good ol' boy, but he never really seems to fit in and fails to convince as the kind of man to whom Alice would be married.
motorcycles and getting stoned. But Alice is fairly glued to her life with the stoned-out Ray, their friends and her restaurant. It is with great sadness that she watches Arlo ride off to resume his life on the road.
I
n addition to the now-fabled Thanksgiving sequence, highlights include James Broderick's lively performance as Ray, Pat Quinn's understated one as Alice and Guthrie's ever present charm and humour.
I
t is also a wonderful bonus to see Arlo perform his father's "Pastures of Plenty" and "Car Song" with the wonderful Pete Seeger. It manages to be both good humoured and effortlessly profound at the same time. The recruitment scenes are hysterically funny.
A
rlo has his litter-inspired run-in with the draft board and becomes known as one of a commune-like group of people in Stockbridge which is more or less centred around Alice and Ray. The two live unconventionally with their friends in an unused church. Alice seeks to add some stability to her life by opening a restaurant, which she does successfully with the help of friend Arlo's jingle. She and Arlo are the only members of their group who look beyond the aimless lifestyle of the members of their commune, who are content to meander through life riding
T
he final shot of Alice's Restaurant is just beautiful, it manages to celebrate something and take it with a grain of salt at the same time. The film itself is ultimately as ramshackle as the group whose story it tells, but if the era means anything to you, you will find it worth watching.

Things are starting to click into place for you Aries, there is a lot of abundance coming your way in the form of your not having to worry or be concerned about having the resources that you need. This peace of mind is a result of being true to your core beliefs and being willing to listen and follow you own path. Make sure that you don’t get drawn into anything negative this week as you cannot allow anything to cause you to turn away from the path that you are on. You are asking more from life now, you are not interested in just surviving, you need to go deeper. A course correction may have recently occurred and this would have urged you to plot a different route and in some cases with a different co-pilot. Even if unpredictable events try to knock you off your game, there is a sense that something good is waiting for you on the horizon. Expect the unexpected and trust your hunches. We find you emotionally super energised this week when in one flash you are totally on the ball and are extremely intuitive but in the next moment you feel completely clueless. This is because the energy comes in flashes; the key is to perhaps write down the answers while they are fresh in your mind. The big picture will then come into focus and once you connect and share with others all the pieces will slowly fit together. Cancer you are a cardinal sign in the zodiac which means you are far from timid in nature and although there are a lot of problems for you to deal with there are also endless opportunities for new beginnings. The question is how willing are you to blaze new trails? The old ways will no longer work and right now you are expected to be a creator and inventor of new ideas. You are being set free from an old routine and travel could be on the cards. One of the secrets of living a more joyful life is being in the here and now and not spending too much time thinking about the past or dreaming about the future. It is also through cherishing those magic moments that sneak up on you when you are not looking or expecting a thing. A new mindset and way of looking at life is about to give you the wings that you have so long wished for. Perhaps it is time to take the middle road for a change? You may feel that lately you have no control over a current situation with your emotions feeling as though they have been put through the mill, one minute you are high the next minute you are low. It is important to remember that just because something looks or feels like it is falling apart does not mean that it is. This week is all about speaking up for yourself and being true to who you are, your needs and your feelings, do not hold back and allow yourself to be held captive any longer.
Getting side tracked, distracted and scattering your energies is likely now. This would be a good time to make a plan and follow it, making sure you tackle one thing at a time. If you try and multi task then you could run into problems. If your lifestyle allows, this would be the perfect time to take a break and let your body get some well earned rest. Make sure you resist the temptation to September 23rd sit on the fence in a controversial subject – your actual opinions could be nd October 22 reassuring.
We all have a few odd (sometimes extremely odd!) friends and relatives popping round at Christmas time and it’s great to have something different in a biscuit tin keeping fresh for just such an occasion that’s a wee bit different. Some ladies from my slimming club came up with some of these that are ridiculously easy to make.
Filo parcels Ingredients: Get a frozen pack of filo pastry and defrost it. But you must keep it covered with a damp, clean tea towel or it will dry out in a matter of minutes and be impossible to work. Pre-heat your oven to 180ºC For the savoury versions you’ll also need a red onion, a normal everyday onion, some sausage meat, herbs and some chutney (Branston will do at a push), and some quail eggs. Also a tub of Philadelphia style cheese or, if you’re on a diet, some quark. Some chopped and squeezed spinach and a bit of grated cheddar is also nice. For the sweet versions you can use jam, lemon curd, dried fruit soaked in brandy, and chocolate.
Directions Brown the onions in a pan or cook until soft in the microwave. Take the skin off the sausages and cut into ¾” rounds. Cut a sheet of the filo into approx. 4” squares. Lay one piece diagonally on top of the other. For the savoury fillings: Savoury Filling version 1: Place a small amount of red onion and a pinch of mixed herbs in the middle of the filo then pop a piece of sausage on top. Savoury Filling version 2: Same as above
but use ordinary onion instead and use about 1/3rd teaspoon chutney on top of the sausage. Savoury Filling version 3: Place ½ teaspoon Philly cheese plus some herbs or a small amount of crushed garlic. Savoury Filling version 4: Place a small amount of well drained and pressed spinach on the bottom of the parcel, then a little grated cheese on top of the spinach. Next week: The sweet fillings + Frosty Cranberries

The way in which others respond to you could change this week with some becoming radically attracted to you while others may feel intimidated. A sense of inner strength and power will be returning and others can feel the changes. It is time to put yourself first; this could be easier than you think as others will have trouble saying ‘no’ to you. Just remember it is not your job to control the events or the lives of others but to take control of your own life.
You can be constantly misunderstood when it comes to how strong your convictions are when you are feeling hurt, underappreciated or you feel you are being taken for granted in some way. While your sign is extremely giving, laid back and generally easy to get along with Pisces does not like to come second. You are ultra sensitive when it comes to the treatment that you get from others and this is your early warning system to fix a problem before it gets too big to find a solution.

Music, Drama and Mixed Emotions ... as The X-Factor comes to the End Last weekend the US XFactor, witnessed the awful breakdown of Rachel Crow, a 13-year-old who had impressed fans all season with her booming voice and cheerful goodness. But the singer's incredible run came to an abrupt end after an indecisive Nicole Scherzinger sent the vote to deadlock when she picked Crow to leave over Canty. Crow’s reaction to the results

Steinway Honour Billy Joel Billy Joel has become the only non-classical performer to be honoured with a portrait at the prestigious Steinway Hall in New York. Joel is only one of two living artists to feature in the Hall's portrait collection and will hang next to famed Russian pianist Vladimir Horowitz, one of the singer's idols. The gallery is home to the piano makers, Steinway & Sons. Joel said the closest he had been to Horowitz, who died in 1989 aged 86, was when he "ran into him once on the street, on

Canty said "It was terrible, it was devastating for me. Outside of what people see, I treated Rachel like my little sister”. After the results, he told Crow “You out-sang me tonight”.
The UK X-Factor also came to an end this weekend, perhaps not as dramatically as the American show, but just as tense none the less. Little Mix were crowned winners in front of a peak TV audience of 15.5 million Little Mix are the first band to win the X Factor, after being mentored by N Dubz singer Tulisa Contostavlos, who was brought into replace former judge Cheryl Cole.
Runner-up Marcus Collins is looking forward to a bright future after losing to the girl band. Gracious in his defeat, Marcus, 23, said: “I’m really proud of myself. The girls really deserved it. They are amazing. I thought my performances went well. I enjoyed them and I hope everyone at home did. It was the best night of my entire life.”

Alex Jones said: “I’ve had an incredible time, and when I’m old and grey I’ll look back at these three months and I’ll think that was a brilliant time.”

The veteran broadcaster David Attenborough said the decision to film in the zoo was made for "the safety of the animal". He explained that: "If you had tried to put a camera in the wild in a polar bear den, she would either have killed the cub or she would have killed the cameraman – one or the other." He added that an explanation about the animal park footage would have ruined the atmosphere of the sequence. The corporation also insisted it would have been impossible to have filmed the images in the wild.
The programme showed genuine footage of a male polar bear scavenging for food during the harsh Arctic winter. Episode five of the series featured the cubs in a den with their mother, with many people assuming they were born and filmed in the Arctic. But the cubs were actually in a Dutch animal park, as revealed in behindthe-scenes footage on the show's website.

Side effects put off breast cancer patients About a third of breast cancer patients stop taking medication because side-effects are more severe than they expect, according to researchers at the Northwestern University in the US. On questioning 686 women who were taking aromatase inhibitors as treatment for oestrogen-sensitive breast cancer, they found that 36 per cent had stopped their medication because of symptoms such as joint pain, hot flushes, weight gain and nausea. Aromatase inhibitors are given to
postmenopausal breast cancer patients to reduce the level of oestrogen in those whose tumours were fuelled by the hormone. About two-thirds of breast cancers are oestrogensensitive, and aromatase inhibitors have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer recurring. The patients in the
study were asked about their symptoms before treatment and at three, six, 12 and 24 months after starting treatment. After three months, a third of women had severe joint pain, 28 per cent had hot flushes and 24 per cent had decreased libido. As a result of the side effects, 10 per cent of the
In defence of sweating No matter how gross sweating appears to many people, doctors say it could be good for your health. It keeps you cool The main function of sweat is to cool your body as your core temperature rises while exercising, sitting in a sauna or working in the garden on a hot day. It helps the body get rid of the excess heat so it won't boil over and overheat. Sweating is so important to the body's natural cooling process that an inability to sweat could be life-threatening.
water. Drape a towel over your head and around the bowl and 'chill out' for two to three minutes. Just make sure to complete the process by washing your face after you sweat (whether via steam or exercise). Letting sweat linger or dry on your face can have the opposite effect and do more harm than good because prickly heat or heat rash can occur if sweat glands get blocked.
difficult-to-treat infections. This is because sweat contains nitrite, which upon reaching the skin's surface converts into nitric oxide, a potent gas with broad spectrum antibacterial and antifungal properties. Perspiration also contains a natural antibiotic or antimicrobial peptide called DermIcidin, which can kill MRSA and other bad bugs resting on the skin's surface.
It keeps your face clear
It promotes healthy circulation
It helps you purge harmful toxins
Sweating from your face can also lead to a decrease in blackheads because it opens up your pores, which may help curb acne. In healthy skin, oils travel to the skin's surface via hair follicles. If dead skin cells, excess oil, etc., plug pores on the surface, oil production continues, swelling the hair follicle and causing acne. You can 'fake' a good exercise-induced sweat with a steam facial: Hold your face about six to eight inches above a bowl of hot, steamy
When you sweat, your heart rate accelerates and circulation increases, particularly in the skin. As activity in your sweat glands ramps up, blood flow increases in the skin, which helps spur on your circulatory system.
With between 2 million and 5 million sweat glands in the human skin, sweating can play a significant role in removing a lot of toxic substances from the body. Most sweat is produced in sweat glands that open up directly into the skin. The toxins removed are typically found deep in the skin. They're pushed to the surface and released through the pores, along with any dirt and oil trapped in the openings where the sweat comes out.
It fights infection Doctors say that sweating helps fend off methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus, better known as MRSA, a nasty bacteria responsible for several
women had stopped taking the drug within two years, and a further 26 per cent had stopped by four years. A spokeswoman for the UK’s Breakthrough Breast Cancer said it was aware some patients in the UK stop and urged any women considering doing so to speak with their doctor.
Age of criminal responsibility 'too low'
Advances in neuroscience suggest the age of criminal responsibility – 10 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland – might be too low, according to Royal Society report on a study of areas where recent scientific findings could have an impact on the law. According to the study, at the age of 10 parts of the brain connected with decisionmaking and judgement are still developing. Professor Nicholas Mackintosh, who chaired the working group that compiled the study, said there is now incontrovertible evidence that the brain continues to develop throughout adolescence. He said some regions of the brain – including parts responsible for decision-
making and impulse control – are not fully mature "until at least the age of 20". In most European countries the current age of criminal responsibility is far higher – 18 in Belgium and 16 in Spain. The report also suggests that because of differences between individuals a cutoff age may not be justifiable. Professor Mackintosh said it was for policy makers to decide on altering the age of responsibility, but the changing science meant it should at least be reviewed. Calls from England's children's commissioner to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 12 were rejected by the government in March 2010.

Anon Personally I think it's long overdue for not only bar and restaurant owners but musicians and artistes to get together and figure out what can be done to try to curb the decimation of the leisure industry in southern Spain and especially the Costa del Sol. For the past few years a slow erosion of the venues has made it more and more difficult for everybody in this industry, enforcing laws
By email which make no sense and help no-one, and it seems that foreign owned establishments are being hit more often than Spanish owned (or is that just me?). When are the authorities going to realise that the entertainment industry here is vital to the success of tourism and to destroy it will lead very quickly to a return to fishing, olive picking and the like. In the almost five years I have lived and worked here I
Derek and June Boyd We recently spent a fantastic week in Torreblanca and were welcomed so warmly by all the bars and restaurants we visited ... so much so, we are now Costa del Sol converts and will most certainly return. Most notably, and we believe worthy of some recognition, were the landlords and locals at the Rovers Return. Not only had they led the way through November to draw attention and raise awareness of men’s health (photo attached), throughout the
Lyn Newman It's me again, missing my word games, haven't had one for two weeks now and find the space has been taken by an ad for fashion and drinks which I guess puts money in the coffers – which is most important of course – but couldn't you perhaps cut out one of the crosswords or Suduko instead and leave my little bit intact? You really would make one old lady VERY happy! The last ones I did a few editions ago, I'm afraid I had to end up cheating and looking to see what the words were despite the fact that I got 54 words for the first one it said 19 would be excellent, and 48 I believe for the second one which had an upper limit of 34 I think. All I can say is that I miss them anyway. I have started to try to do your quick crossword with varying results but the type of crossword I REALLY like is the codeword, I am very
have seen a massive change from Malaga to Gibraltar in the entertainment industry, and none of it is for the good. Look at Benidorm and the Costa Blanca where the regulations are governed with common sense and you will see a thriving tourist industry which has almost a year round season with bars, restaurants and entertainers all working together and making a great success of it.

year they support other great charities like Help for Heroes and your local cancer charity Cudeca. Additionally, we also learned of a lady who is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer and whilst this clearly taking its toll she is doing so much good work in organising regular events to raise funds for Cudeca – well done Fiona Pink. Whilst we recognise there are
T so many people doing wonderful things for great causes, it really did open our eyes to the level of support the residents and Costa del Sol provide for charities. You all have so much to be proud of.
By email successful with them and always finish them without any trouble so I wonder if it is possible that you might consider including one of those in the future please? I'm no good at all at the cryptic crosswords though, I haven't got that sort of mind. Many thanks anyway for a most enjoyable paper. One thing I would ask though is why it is that the TV programmes are always shown in English times and not Spanish? I find this a bit

weird if I may be so bold as to say so. Editor says: Well Lyn your word puzzles are, I’m pleased to tell you, back to stay on Take a Break (page 26) so good luck and away you go! We’ll bear in mind your request for codewords and if we have any space in the future will see what can be done. As for the TV listings, well I’m afraid we can’t really do much about them. Because they come from the UK they are, of course, all in English times. It would just be too time consuming to alter each one individually.

he Pleiades (ply-a-dees) is a very tight group of stars that have been described as the jewel box of the sky, sprinkled with diamonds. If you have a pair of binoculars you will definitely want to go and use them to have a look at the Pleiades after reading this!
T
o the naked eye most people can make out seven stars forming a very tight knit group of stars in the constellation of Taurus the Bull. To find them, go outside around 9 o’clock and look to the southeast and you will see the really bright planet Jupiter shining brighter than anything else in the sky. Now look towards the left of Jupiter (about two fists held at arm’s length) and you will see the Pleiades.
T
hey are so tightly grouped together that at first they look like a fuzzy smudge in the sky but now that you have found them you will see that they are all individual stars. If you can’t count seven stars then ‘Should have gone to Specsavers’ springs to mind!
T
he Pleiades are a special group of stars; they are ‘baby stars’ about 360 light years away from Earth. Our Sun is a middle aged star about six billion years old. In another six billion years it will use up all its supply of hydrogen. It will expand and swallow up the Earth before collapsing down to a white dwarf. Its light will go out and it will eventually die. But our star began its life from a gaseous nebula of hydrogen gas that condensed to create a star. After billions of years this gas grew and grew. The pressure and heat inside the core created a thermo-nuclear reaction that converted hydrogen into helium that caused the gasses to shine and a star was born.
T
he Pleiades are in the first stages of their birth – they are about 100 million years old. Compare that to our Sun’s six billion years and you will see that they are nothing more than toddlers. Photographs taken of the Pleiades
through the best telescopes even show the remaining gasses from their creation. These gases will undoubtedly go on to create new planets orbiting around these stars and – who knows? – create new life.
S
o take your binoculars and have a look at the Pleiades and you will see not seven but thousands of stars. The Pleiades are rich in a myriad of stars. You may even be able to see the gas clouds surrounding them and I guarantee you will be impressed with what you can see. Notice too the blue/white colour of the stars indicating that they are very hot and very new.
T
he Pleiades are possibly the most well known of all the star clusters and are mentioned in almost every culture around the world from Aboriginal Australians, Chinese, Mayan and even native American Indians. They are even mentioned three times in the Bible and in Homer’s Odyssey. Charles Messier who was a French astronomer living in the 18th century drew up an extremely accurate chart listing all ‘fuzzy objects’ in the sky that could be mistaken for comets. He listed the Pleiades as number 45 hence the astronomical designation of M45.
B
ut while we are talking about the birth and death of stars, look just below the Pleiades at a bright red star called Aldebaran (Al-deb-ran). Aldebaran is 65 light years away from Earth and marks the red eye of Taurus the Bull; the light you are seeing left Aldebaran in 1946 and has only just arrived here.
A
ldebaran is a very old star and has used up most of its fuel of hydrogen and begun to swell in size. It is classed as a red giant star – it is huge. If Aldebaran was placed where the Sun is then its outer edge would reach out further than the planet Venus and the Earth would be its next meal on the menu!

Championship Trophy,” the double champion said. “I have had the trophy in my house all year and didn't want to give it back, so this means a great deal to me. “It's hard to put into words how it feels to win again; the team stayed focused and made few mistakes and I would like to thank them for all their impressive efforts. I would also like to thank Renault who worked so hard all year. The history of Formula One means a lot to me and it's special to know that we are now somehow a part of that.”

Lotus Renault GP has signed Frenchman Romain Grosjean to race alongside returning former champion Kimi Räikkönen in the 2012 F1 World Championship. Grosjean is the reigning GP2 Series champion and was the Lotus Renault team's third driver this season. He was previously a title winner in the F3 Euroseries and GP2 Asia, then became a Renault F1 test driver in 2008. The 25-year-old made his F1 race debut for the team, as a replacement for Nelson Piquet Jr, during a troubled second half of 2009 - while the team was embroiled in the Singapore-gate scandal.
Grosjean was unable to qualify higher than twelfth or take the chequered flag any higher than 13th, during his seven races. That seat alongside new signing Robert Kubica - went to Vitaly Petrov for 2010, but Grosjean insists he is now ready to make a much bigger F1 impact.

Eddie Jordan was presented with the Motorsport Ireland Hall of Fame Award recently. Jordan scooped the honour for everything that he has contributed to motorsport both in Ireland and internationally over the past 40 years. “I am absolutely delighted to accept this prestigious honour,” said the former F1 team boss and now BBC Sport F1 analyst alongside David Coulthard and anchorman Jake Humphrey. Jordan added”I
am proud that we had so many Irish people centrally involved with the team success, I hope we will see a second Irish Grand Prix team sometime in the future. The team always had great support from Ireland and I think everyone was proud of the highlights – the four Grand Prix wins – the battle for the constructors’ and drivers’ titles in 1999 and providing the debut drives for Michael Schumacher and others.

Donald at the double Luke Donald became the first man to win the US and European money lists in one year after finishing third at the season-ending Dubai World Championship. The world number one needed a top-nine finish to complete the feat and shot a bogey-free 66 for a 16 under total. Rory McIlroy, who had to win the Dubai event for a chance of the money list, closed with a 71, 10 shots adrift. Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, the overnight leader, won the title by two shots after a 67 left him at 19 under. After accumulating £4.19m in winning the US money list, Donald finished with earnings of £3,632,685 from his tournaments on the European Tour. The 34year-old Donald, who has been at the summit of the world rankings for 27 weeks, had already clinched the U.S. Tour's money-list crown in October. "I couldn't see Rory's name on the leaderboard but I kind of knew the double was mine by the 13th hole," Donald told reporters after shooting a 66 for 272 to take third place behind Dubai winner Alvaro Quiros of Spain (269). "I knew I had made history and the last six holes were kind of surreal," added the winner of this year's WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona, PGA Championship at

enjoy myself, have a few smiles and enjoy the walk. I guess that's what it is all about," added Donald. "There's a lot still to achieve," he said, after being presented with the lavish Race to Dubai trophy. "The beauty of this game is that you are always looking for ways to improve.
It was a typically assured performance from 34-yearold Donald, who did not drop a shot over the final 46 holes of the tournament. McIlroy holed a 20-foot putt at the 10th for his second birdie of the day to reach 10 under but his anger was evident when he missed a par putt from six feet at the next. The US Open champion parred his way in to a round of 71 and second place in the Race to Dubai standings. "I can't wait to have a few weeks off," said the 22year-old, who has been troubled by a possible case of Dengue fever and has withdrawn from next week's Thailand Golf Championship, the last event of the season on the Asian
Axarquia Rugby Club in Velez-Malaga, last Saturday hosted a charity rugby match in support of under privileged children in Velez-Malaga. Players, coaching staff and supporters all brought new or nearly new toys ready to be given to the children this Christmas. The presents included a child s bike, cuddly toys, dolls, remote control cars, figurines and games – fantastic generosity which will be sure to brighten Christmas day in some local households. Axarquia Rugby Club is committed to continue supporting the local community.
"I'd love to pick up a major," added the Englishman, whose best finish to date in golf's big four annual events is joint third in the Masters and PGA Championship. "It's fun being number one but I know there are lots of great players chasing me and that will keep me motivated to work hard."

The match itself was the first team, including some up-and-coming cadets, against the veterans of the club – speed against brawn. The match was played with great spirit

Last Friday, the 9th of December, a charity game of golf took place at the Sta. Maria Golf & Country Club. This was an annual charity tournament with an excellent final figure raised of over €8000. Every December Gary O’Neill and Christopher Labbett organise a charity tournament at the Sta. Maria Golf where they are members. This year the charity chosen to receive the funds of the event is DEBRA Spain, the Butterfly Children Charity, based in Marbella. Sta. Maria Golf management also contributes to the cause by allowing the event to use the course and facilities at no cost. Despite the financial crisis the organisers managed to maintain the number of participants, raising a fantastic amount of money from green fees, auctions and raffles. The funds obtained will help to maintain the support provided by the charity to Butterfly Children and their families.

Jonny Wilkinson retires from England duty England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson has retired from international rugby union. The 32-year-old won 91 England caps, and memorably kicked the winning drop-goal in the 2003 World Cup final, "It fills me with great sadness, but I know I have been blessed in so many ways to have experienced what I have with the England rugby team," he said. Despite a career plagued by injury, Wilkinson is England's all-time leading scorer with 1,179 points.
Juanmi salvages a point After last week's bad result, Malaga were looking for three points to put them back into the European running. Malaga started well, Duda having a great chance to put them ahead which he squandered. The improving Monreal then hit the post as Malaga threatened to run riot. But despite this pressure it was Osasuna who scored first – bad defending let the ball drop at the feet of Irahima who poked home from close in on 33 minutes. After the break with Malaga continuing to dominate, Rondon looking bright on the ball angled a shot just wide and then set up Seba who just failed to slot his shot home. Isco came within inches of an equaliser as his shot crept just wide on 67 minutes. Just three minutes later the goal

Amir Khan gets back on the ride to being the Nº1 boxer and the first stop will be Las Vegas on March 31st when he intends to ‘make Lamont Peterson suffer’ for ‘stealing’ his world lightwelterweight titles. HBO television who still believe that Britain’s Khan can be the world’s next pound-forpound champion are prepared to bankroll a doubling of Peterson’s fee for his upset of Khan on Saturday night, from a reported $650,000 to more than $1million. The biggest pay-day available to Peterson, once a homeless boy on the streets of Washington, will ensure Khan gets another chance.

Barca were lucky says Jose Mourinho Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho believes Barcelona were fortunate to win Saturday's El Clasico. The champions bounced back from conceding the fastest goal in the fixture's history to win 3-1, replacing Real at the top of La Liga."Luck plays a part," Mourinho said. "When it was 1-0, we could easily have gone 2-0 up. "Maybe under normal circumstances we would do, but Cristiano put it wide." Madrid took the lead inside 23 seconds through Karim Benzema but Alexis Sanchez equalised before Xavi's deflected strike put Barca ahead. Cesc Fabregas completed the triumph with a diving header.

Warne’s comeback on hold as he burns fingers Shane Warne has burnt his bowling fingers to put his comeback in doubt. The legendary Australian legspinner, 42, posted pictures of his damaged hand on Twitter. He also appealed for help to speed up his recovery in time to play for Melbourne Stars against Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League on Saturday. “Not ideal preparation for practice match today – burning the bowling hand. Get better quickly please, any suggestions – HELP," Warne tweeted. Warne retired from international cricket after helping Australia to a 5-0 Ashes series victory over England in early 2007.
