Rajoy’s absolute majority gets him in All 350 Members of Parliament had to stand up and say whether they approved or not of Mariano Rajoy becoming the sixth prime minister since the country’s transition to democracy (1975-77).

The decision was then communicated to King Juan Carlos who will swear in Sr Rajoy on Wednesday, the 21st. After that ceremony he will present the names of his ministers to the king for his approval and only then will the general public be told who will form part of the new government.Apart from pledging to remove the Socialists’ freeze on pensions and raising them in line with the rate of inflation as has been the custom in the past,

Sr Rajoy promised during his investiture speech on Monday to cut the deficit by €16.5 billion, freeze publicsector jobs, move all public holidays except Christmas, New Year and National Day (October 12th) to Mondays, and stop early retirements. In his 84-minute speech to Congress, Rajoy also said he would carry out state reforms in an attempt to

WORLD Rajoy’s absolute Greetings from Oz! majority gets him in By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

His speech was followed by a debate till late Monday which ran over into Tuesday, to give all the opposition parties a chance to tell him what they objected to in his plans. Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, the Socialist candidate in the general election, warned that the new PP government would be making drastic cuts in the public welfare system and social policies. "So when are we going to get the bad news?" Rubalcaba asked during the debate, accusing Rajoy of "knowing where the cuts" will be made but declining for the moment to

be more specific. Rubalcaba also said his party planned to vote against Rajoy’s investiture but offered to work with the PP whenever possible and provide a loyal and constructive opposition. Rubalcaba also challenged Rajoy and the PP to withdraw the appeal it filed with the Constitutional Court against gay marriage – a demand that got a round of applause from the opposition parties. Josep Antoni Durán Lleida, spokesman for the Catalan nationalist CiU bloc – the third-largest political force in parliament – accused Rajoy of purposely "keeping quiet" about his measures and not releasing too many details. Rosa Díez, of the Unión Progreso y Democracia, also said that Rajoy's proposed measures are very ambiguous. "He didn't dedicate any time to reflect

on the political crisis," she said. She also elicited a cutting reply from him as regards her complaint about the current electoral system, which favours regional parties more than small parties with national coverage like the UP&D and Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left). “You only want me to reform the system so that your party can have more seats in parliament,” he snapped at her. Diez commented later that “he hasn’t even been sworn in yet, and I’m already in his bad books”.

Music giants lose case against Spaniard Pablo Soto, who created peer-to-peer sharing software such as Manolito, Blubster and Piolet, has won a legal battle against movie and music industry giants Promusicae, Warner, Universal, Sony BMG and EMI. They launched the suit against Soto in June, 2008, seeking €13 million in damages, arguing that Soto had created his P2P

programs with "the evident intention of profit and parasitic conduct," but the judge ruled that Soto's creations served for sharing "audio data, an instrument not apt per se for unlocking works protected by authors' rights." The plaintiffs were ordered to pay all the costs arising from the trial.

United Left coordinator Cayo Lara began his speech with an attack on the outgoing Socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, adding that he didn't "expect anything different" from the new PP administration. He said his group will vote against all the measures Rajoy plans on introducing.

Well, Sydney was great. We went on a harbour cruise, to the QVB that has an amazing underground food mall, walked across Hyde Park on a daily basis, walked around the Opera House, Bondi Beach, Sydney Zoo, Paddy’s Market, didn’t go up the bridge – way too high, ugh! – walked around The Rocks and ate our socks off, so there goes the diet, big time. The hotel we stayed in was right on Hyde Park so was really convenient for walking all round the city so, if you’re thinking of going, try the Y on the Park, Hyde Park. Book a room with en suite, rooms with communal showers and loos that are kept spotlessly clean and they have dormitories too – it’s cheap, clean, convenient and good. now we’re in Melbourne staying with family. We arrived the night before last, spent yesterday during the day at the Victoria Market which makes Fuengirola and Malaga Markets look daft. This market covers acres of area in covered shed type structures and it sells everything from clothes and souvenirs to a fabulous selection of meats, fish, vegetables and anything else you can think of. It was my husband’s 60th birthday today so we drove out of the city and did a steam train ride along to some lakes. Two hours of relaxing puffing along in Puffing Billy looking at some truly stunning scenery and houses. Tonight we’re off for a surprise dinner and all we’ve been told is that it’s something “unusual” so that’s going to be interesting! (See “letter from A Broad” on page 12 and page 27.)

He also pledged not to raise taxes for the moment, but said he would reform the way in which small businesses and the selfemployed pay value-added tax (VAT). He also promised to carry out an "integral reform of the job market," and to present a youthemployment plan.

Wages freeze to be proposed The Spanish Confederation of Business Organisations (CEOE) intends to submit a proposal to the labour unions before January 6th that wages should be frozen until 2015.

According to an internal CEOE report, this would generate economic growth of 0.5% a year as well as a 0.7 per cent drop in unemployment. The CEOE is currently in the process of renegotiating a pact with the unions that would raise

wages by between 1.5 per cent and 2.5 per cent next year. In September, the CEOE announced that it was backing out of the pact because “salaries had gone through the roof and had to

be controlled”. The CEOE’s so-called “hard wing” has asked its president, Juan Rosell, not to sign any agreements with the unions and to let incoming PM Mariano Rajoy sort it out if they refuse to negotiate.

MADRID

Spaniards slip down EU wealth As more details about the business activities of Iñaki Urdangarin, King Juan Carlos' son- table

in-law, showed that the scope of the alleged wrongdoing is even greater than originally thought, the monarch himself was given top marks for his handling of the situation. Nearly 90 per cent of people in a survey said they approved of the measure to exclude Urdangarin from official royal functions. However, they felt the measure should have been taken two years ago, when Urdangarin was advised to “find work abroad”. He and his wife, the Infanta Cristina, and their four children went to live in Washington, where the former handball Olympic champion was given a post at Telefónica International. The move caused some surprise at the time but what was not generally known was that the royal household had appointed a special envoy to investigate Urdangarin's business dealings in 2006 in an attempt to control the fallout from what is now known as the Palma Arena case. But in the end,

attorneys investigating that case noticed the suspect public contracts awarded to Urdangarin's non-profit Nóos Institute and launched an investigation that will probably end with his arraignment, inside sources predict. In the past few days it has been revealed that in addition to making profits of up to 170 per cent over the real costs of the events the Nóos Institute organised for the Balearic and Valencia regional governments between 2004 and 2006, Urdangarin and his associate Diego Torres also diverted €500,000 to a little known London-based firm that they had previously acquired. Over a period of seven years, the Nóos Institute and its affiliates made €9 million from private firms, and another €7 million from regional

governments, for services that the authorities now say were non-existent or grossly overcharged. The money then went to companies controlled by Urdangarin and Torres. Urdangarin was once viewed as the perfect husband for a princess. His mother was an aristocrat, his father a respectable banker and he himself was a successful sportsman. He obtained a master's degree from Madrid's prestigious business school Esade, where one of his

professors was Diego Torres who was later to become his business partner. Together, they created the non-profit Nóos Institute for Strategic Studies in Sponsorship and Patronage, with the mission of finding regular sponsors for its sports, tourism and health events in the private and public sectors. Now Urdangarin is a pariah and it remains to be seen how much damage he will have done to a royal family that has never been involved in such a public scandal.

According to European Statistics Office figures, Spain's GDP per capita dropped from 105 per cent of the average in the EU in 2007, before the economic crisis broke, to 100 per cent last year. Wealth levels in the euro zone as a whole were 108 per cent the EU average last year. In terms of Actual Individual Consumption per capita, an alternative measurement that reflects households’ spending power, Spain is five percentage points below the EU average, a level last seen in Spain in 2002. Pilots' strike causes minimal disruption Iberia operated “as normal” on Sunday, despite it being the first day of the pilots’ strike, and complied fully with the government’s minimum service requirements. Terminal 4 at Madrid's Barajas airport, where Iberia operates, was quiet because Iberia had managed to find seats on other airlines for 98 per cent of the passengers who would have been affected. The pilots will strike for a second day on Thursday, December 29th, to protest the carrier's plans to launch a low-cost airline, Iberia Express, in March 2012.

Euro will survive

The US has called on North Korea to pursue a "path of peace" following the death of leader Kim Jong-il. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the US was ready to help the North Korean people and create lasting security on the Korean peninsula. The US has been holding urgent talks with the communist state's neighbours and President Barack Obama has promised to defend regional allies. Kim Jong-il died on Saturday of a heart attack, and a period of official mourning is now under way in North Korea.

He is to be buried on 28th December. State TV is showing images of people filing past his open coffin in Pyongyang, crying and grieving for the long-time leader. Kim Jong-il, whose age was given as 69 when he died, had been in the process of formalising his third son, Kim Jong-un

(pictured), as his successor, but the transition had not been completed and analysts fear Mr Kim's death could trigger a period of instability in the internationally isolated nuclear-armed state. South Korea's military has been on alert since the announcement on

Monday on North Korean state television. The government has also increased its alert level against possible cyber attacks from Pyongyang. But it says it will reconsider a plan to display Christmas lights near the border – something that angers North Korea.

The president of the european Central Bank (eCB), Mario Draghi, told the european Parliament's Committee on economic and Monetary affairs on Monday that he has "no doubts" about the euro's ability to survive the current crisis. He said: "i have no

doubts whatsoever about the strength of the euro, about its about its permanence, irreversibility. But you have a lot of people, especially outside the euro area, who spend a lot of time in what i call morbid speculation, asking 'what if, what if'."

Dozens of army deserters 'gunned down'

Olympic rings unveiled

Dozens of army deserters have been shot dead by syrian troops as they tried to flee their bases and join anti-government protests on Monday, according to the London-based syrian Observatory for Human rights. The claim has not been independently verified as foreign media are banned from reporting in syria. Damascus earlier agreed to an arab League deal to allow monitors in later this week. some 5,000 people have died since the protests against President Bashar al-assad began in March.

A giant set of Olympic rings has been unveiled at the entrance to the Channel ausTraLia Tunnel in France. The rings – which are 9.4m (31ft) wide and 4.6m (15ft) high Aid for Indonesia asylum boat search – are fixed to the wall of the tunnel in Coquelles, near Calais. australia has sent a plane and a ship to help search for scores of They were built in Lille and assembled at the tunnel entrance over two nights by five rock climbers. Each ring is fixed to the wall by 10 anchor points to hold it in place against the force

generated by trains passing at up to 160km/h (99mph). The manufacturing and placement of the rings has been privately financed by Eurotunnel, who have worked closely with the

Comité National Olympique et Sportif Français (the French National Olympic Committee). Seb Coe, chair of London 2012, said the blue, yellow, black, green and red rings will “excite

visitors travelling from Europe and inspire them about the Olympic Games taking place in London, and demonstrate that we are ready to welcome the world in 2012".

Court hears of secret computer files Some 110,000 classified cables were found on the computer of Bradley Manning, the former US Army intelligence analyst who is charged with 22 counts of distributing state secrets to Wikileaks. Digital investigator David Shaver acknowledged on the fourth day of the pretrial hearting at the Fort Meade military base court that there was little indication any of the files had been circulated, but another investigator, Mark Johnson, testified that he found records of internet chats with a former hacker on Pte Manning's computer, in which the defendant

admitted leaking all the cables. Pte Manning was arrested in May 2010 after the hacker handed records of this correspondence to the authorities. The hearing will determine if the 24year-old should face a court-martial. If convicted, Pte Manning could face life in prison. Defence lawyers argue that the leaked material did little or no damage to US interests.

They have also asked why his superiors did not suspend his security clearance despite his unpredictable behaviour – which had included incidents such as turning furniture over in a fit of rage. The hearing also heard how Pte Manning struggled with gender issues and was bullied by fellow soldiers. The case is due to last for several more days.

Germany Supports UK MPs Attack HM Germany’s foreign minister has suggested it can resolve Revenue & Customs differences with the UK over the future of Europe.

A committee of MPs has criticised "cosy" deals between HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and big businesses.

After holding talks with his British counterpart William Hague, Guido Westerwelle said he wanted to “build bridges over troubled waters”. Asked about the prospect of the UK eventually signing an EUwide pact, he said “with goodwill it is doable”. But Mr. Hague said the UK would not set aside its demands for safeguards on regulation for the City of London. Mr Hague said the UK was looking to "expand and co-operation intensify" focused on trade and delivering "tangible benefits" on jobs and productivity.

The Public Accounts Committee said large firms got favourable treatment and there was a lack of public accountability over how deals were done.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle

But he insisted that the UK would not be watering down its conditions for agreeing to any EU-wide pact. It rejected an agreement earlier this month, saying other EU members had not been willing to accept "modest" safeguards on financial

regulation and the single market. The two men also said Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel had had a "constructive" phone conversation about the way forward.

In a statement, HMRC rejected the findings and said there was a "misunderstanding of facts". The MPs believe that there are £25bn of outstanding tax issues with big companies and wants HMRC to be more open in its dealing with large firms. The committee singled out Dave Hartnett, permanent secretary for tax, for failing to handle tax negotiations with some big companies properly.

Heroin Found in Foreign National Archives criminal debate HMV in Trouble

A spokesman for HMRC hit back, saying the MPs were simply wrong to call

A sealed package containing heroin was found in an 80-year-old Foreign Office file at the National Archives, its managers have said. The Class A drug was filed with a document from the British Consulate in Cairo about a 1928 court case.

The off-white powder, discovered by a member of the public who asked to see the file, was sent for analysis. Having been confirmed as heroin, the substance was handed over to the Metropolitan Police. The pouch – which

contained less than a gram of heroin in 19 sachets – has been replaced with a photo and the file is now back on public display. National Archives’ director of operations Jeff James said the discovery hints at more mysteries to be found among the huge bank of archives.

Labour have demanded to know whether the Home Office can account for the “precise whereabouts” of all foreign criminals awaiting deportation. Shadow immigration minister Chris Bryant said without that knowledge they could never be removed.

Immigration Minister Damian Green said there were 3,940 foreign offenders living in the UK, but it was “difficult to say” where every individual was. He insisted the government was making every effort to speed up deportations.

HMV has said it may sell its live music division to raise funds, as it battles with another drop in sales. Likefor-like sales, which strip out the effect of shop closures, were down 11.6% in the 26 weeks to October versus a year ago. Including the cost of store closures, HMV made a pre-tax loss of £45.7m. HMV’s shares fell 12.1% after the news. The company’s stock has fallen almost 90% since last December.

Six More Libraries Train Fares Going Up Close Down Campaigners have failed in a legal bid to thwart the closure of several libraries in north-west London. Residents and celebrities wanted to prevent Brent Council shutting the six libraries. They hoped the Court of Appeal would overturn the decision of a High Court

judge who found the plan lawful. But judges sided with the council in the case, which being watched by campaigners around the country where other libraries are threatened.

Train fares will rise by an average of 5.9% in January 2012, the Association of Train Operating Companies has said.

Prices Index. ATOC said the fare increase would be used to pay for "new trains, faster services and better stations".

In his Autumn Statement last month, Chancellor George Osborne capped fare increases at 6%, instead of the expected 8%. Fare rises are linked to inflation, which is currently 5.2% as measured by the Retail

Currently, passengers contribute about £6.5bn to the running of the railways, with taxpayers picking up the remaining £4bn. The fare increases apply in England, Scotland and Wales, and take effect from Monday 2nd January 2012.

David Hartnett

Mr Hartnett's honesty into question. The report by the committee contains some of the most severe criticism of a civil servant yet published. The MPs accuse Dave Hartnett of mishandling tax negotiations with some big companies – such as letting Goldman Sachs off millions of pounds in interest on its tax bill. He had also, the MPs said, tried to stonewall

their questions when they quizzed him at committee hearings during October and November this year. An HMRC spokesman said Mr Hartnett had answered questions strictly in line with the advice of the tax department's lawyers, which legally restricted how much he could reveal about individual tax cases.

a surprise visit

Prime Minister David Cameron made an unannounced visit to UK troops in Afghanistan yesterday (Tuesday).

David Cameron in Afghanistan last year

However, due to a dust storm, he was unable to fly to Camp Bastion – the main British base – and was diverted to the Nato base in Kandahar. There he met British Tornado pilots – some of the 9,500 UK troops currently serving in the country. The trip came as the government said it was creating a cabinet committee with responsibility for the armed forces. Speaking to reporters in the PM Kandahar,

discussed the role the committee would play in a new cross-government effort to improve the welfare of British troops, and repeated his commitment that the UK's combat role in Afghanistan would be over by the end of 2014. Another trip by Mr Cameron to Afghanistan last year was disrupted by a security alert, but the PM said: "You just have to take the rough with the smooth; I don't feel particularly jinxed."

More plainclothes police for Mijas

Junta de Andalucia to legalise homes Junta de Andalucia president Jose Antonio Griñan announced on Sunday that the regional government will approve a decree on January 10th that would make it possible to regularise the legal position of some 300,000 properties built illegally in the past 20 years or so – at least 50,000 of them in Malaga province. The Junta approved the Territorial Planning Law of Andalucia in 2003 which was specifically aimed at stopping illegal construction in the countryside and this

complete U-turn has been received with scepticism throughout Malaga province, where many former mayors and council members have been jailed or face charges of handing out “irregular” building licences.

anticipated legal problems because, as they told the SUR newspaper, “in practice it’s an amnesty and what will happen now to those people who have been jailed or still face charges for allegedly selling licences to builders”?

The most common observation is that the Junta is trying to avoid a crushing defeat in the regional election to be held on March 25th. However, groups and local politicians who have been trying to regularise illegal constructions welcomed the announcement but

Just over 12,760 illegal constructions have been identified in the Axarquia and it is estimated that there are 15,000 in the Guadalhorce valley, 3,000 each in Mijas and Estepona, 1,600 in the Serrania de Ronda, 1,500 around Antequera and 1,174 in Malaga city.

Andalucian readers catching up The number of people in Andalucia who read regularly rose 4.4 per cent this year – to just over 87 per cent – only three percentage points below the national average. Just over half of the people aged 14 and over who were questioned for the Barometer of Reading and Purchase of Books in Andalucia said they read books regularly and a similar number said they had bought at least one book in the past year. Young men aged 14 to 24 were more inclined to read on-line but less than 4 per cent of Andalucians possess a digital book reader. The head of the Junta de Andalucia’s cultural department, Paulino Plata, said the figures were satisfactory, because they showed that the region’s young people

read as much as those elsewhere in Spain. He said the Junta’s second Reading Plan, to be implemented early next year, will encourage children to read as soon as

they start school. It will also provide libraries with state-of-theart technology and encourage the holding of book fairs, among other initiatives.

Malaga’s provincial government has authorised the Local Police in Mijas to increase the number of agents working out of uniform to 29, as requested by Mayor Angel Nozal. A spokesman for the council’s citizen’s security department said the

plainclothes policemen would be employed mainly outside schools in an effort to reduce drug trafficking. He said they will also be in a better position to enforce municipal regulations relating to keeping the streets clean, which is a major source of complaints from residents. Police chief

Francisco Montilla said plainclothes policemen had proved to be more effective at preventing petty crimes. He also pointed out that the 50 people fined so far for not cleaning up after their dogs had been caught by plainclothes police.

Kings – just for a day The Torremolinos storeowners association (ACET) has launched its traditional “Kings for a day” campaign to encourage people to shop at local stores owned by its members. Until February 9th, shoppers at ACET stores will be given

numbered tickets and the one who has the winning number – drawn lotterystyle – will have to spend €15,000 in just one day at ACET stores. The winner will be allowed to make two big purchases – one of €1,000

and another of €2,000 – but apart from that he/she cannot spend more than €500 in a single store. It will be a race against the clock but serious contenders will map out the town’s ACET stores well ahead of time.

Town votes to keep on smurfing

Showroom with over 20 kitchens, just to inspire

Residents of the small town of Juzcar have decided to stay “blue” in the hope that people will continue to visit what has been dubbed “the first Smurfs town” making it probably the healthiest economy in Malaga province. Just over 73 per cent of those eligible to vote actually voted – 143 in favour, 33 against and six blank votes. Another 20 votes are expected to arrive by post before Christmas but whether they are for or against will make no difference – Juzcar stays blue. Since the town was painted blue in June for a Smurfs film, some 80,000 people have visited it. As a result, Mayor David Fernandez told the press on Monday, several new businesses have opened to cater for them and there are more people registering

as self-employed. He said Juzcar is also sharing its mini-boom with nearby towns in the Genal valley. “When our restaurants are full, the visitors go to nearby towns to eat,” One woman who now lives and works in Marbella voted in favour because the colour put the town on the map. “Before, when people asked me where I came from, I had to say a town in the Serrania de Ronda,” said Angeles Fernandez. “Now I only have to say Juzcar and everyone knows where that is”. Raquel Benitez also voted to stay

Since 1976, when he was first jailed for deserting the Army, he has spent much of his time in Albolote jail in Granada province, where he was serving his last sentence for robbery with intimidation – a crime he committed after not returning to jail from a free weekend. When he heard the news, Montes Neira told his family: “Don’t park outside the jail when you come for me, because I want to walk for two or three kilometres to feel like a free man.”

blue, pointing out that “before the town really was blue in the sense that it was empty and sad, now it’s buzzing with activity all the time”. One visitor said before the results were known: “I can’t vote but if people vote against staying blue, the town would lose out, there’s an economic crisis and the money we visitors spend here, stays here”. But resident Pedro Antonio del Rio spoke up for the nay-sayers: “The town has always been white and should go back to being so.”

Land workers invade Alba finca about 500 agricultural workers invaded a finca belonging to the Duchess of alba last week, demanding work in response to a statement by her oldest son, Cayetano martínez de irujo, who had said during a television interview that “andalucian land labourers have little inclination to work”. The men, who belong to the andalucian Workers Union, shouted “Here are the idle andalucians who want work” as they invaded the finca. martínez de irujo said his words had been misunderstood and will meet with the workers this week.

Feliz Navidad - Happy Christmas! With less than a week to go why not take some time out to soak up the special atmosphere of the Spanish festive season? One of my favourite treats at this time of year is a trip into Malaga, particularly as dusk falls and the lights come on all over the city. If you don't fancy driving into the centre, then take one of the local Cercanias train lines. The coastal line runs services every twenty minutes to Malaga Centro/Alameda from Fuengirola (and you can always leave your car at one of the stations such as Plaza Mayor where there is plenty of easy parking).

for their evening “paseo” to admire the decorations or stop in one of the many cafes and tapas bars to watch the world go by. And don't forget to pass by the magnificent cathedral where illuminations make the freshly cleaned stonework gleam golden in the evenings. The facade is lit up with doves and the inscription “Paz en la Tierra” (Peace on Earth) while a simple “Belen” (Bethlehem) adorns the cathedral steps.

As you come out of the station walk down towards the Paseo del Parque past the flower stalls bristling with scarlet poinsettias and then up Calle Larios to the Plaza de la Constitucion – and admire the gorgeous kaleidescope of twinkling coloured lights. This year, apparently, the decorations are made from LED lights to conserve electricity but the effect is no less impressive.

There are many other “Belens” to be seen (including one inside the cathedral) but Spanish nativity scenes are, of course, generally quite elaborate and show not only the birth in the stable but of the the whole surrounding area. And they frequently incorporate elements which owe a lot to the imagination – last year the three kings arrived in a Venetian-style Bethlehem by gondola in Malaga cathedral and the municipal Belen in the town hall this year apparently is a watery one with rivers and the Mediterranean sea featuring prominently. (The ultimate though, has to be the scene

And it isn't just the light show that is so exciting in Malaga this time of year, the atmosphere is electric too but in a good-natured way. Throngs of Spanish families and people of all nationalities stroll around

in the town of Rute, in province, Cordoba attracting thousands of visitors who can only admire, not taste the buildings and characters made entirely from chocolate!) To get a flavour of the Andalucian Christmas and to see photographs of the Malaga lights log on to the very informative website www.navidad-andalucia.es – it's in Spanish but easy to navigate (just click on Navidad 2011 en Malaga). Then if you click on “Villancicos” in the top menu bar you can even listen to some Spanish carols – try listening to the children singing Silent Night/Noche de Paz – just the thing to get you in the mood for next weekend! by Jean Joss

Letter from A Broad Dear News Readers, So, where do I start? Well, the ‘plane ride from London to Sydney was predictable. Twelve-and-a-half hours, a drop down of 50 minutes, then hours in a metal pencil case hurtling through the air at a height of stupid feet above the ground could never be described as pleasant! ( I suppose if you go first class it’s different but in “cattle class”…. Nah, it’s not nice at all.) But being fed a dry roll without butter with a couple of bits of sliced tomato and floppy cucumber because I can’t eat nuts was a bit bad – I’m only allergic to nuts, not food in general and, while everyone else was tucking into a beef with rice dish, I felt a bit put out. On the way back I’ll carry my own “grub” as they say here in Aus. Anyway, our first four days were spent in Sydney where, on the first day, we walked all round taking in the famous Queen Victoria Building that is stuffed full of really good individual little shops and, underneath has a food hall where you could spend at least a couple of weeks and still not be able to eat at each outlet! Then we were off to The Rocks, the area first developed by the early settlers coming to Sydney. Modern times see shops, restaurants and museums and it’s almost situated under the famous Sydney Bridge that they call the “coat hanger”, a fairly

accurate description when you think about it. The Sydney Opera House is a fabulous, if weird, design and for twenty dollars you can have a look round it on a guided tour but, as we had seen inside twelve years ago when it was free, we didn’t bother and there were no concerts or recitals going on while we were there.

On our last day we took a boat trip with Cook’s Cruises over to the Sydney Zoo. It’s very well laid out but quite tiring to walk around – though they did have a “Wally Trolly” for those who wanted to use it for an extra four bucks, but you don’t get to hop-on-hop-off very often so, although you could probably see most of the animals, you couldn’t stand

Christmas Quiz Well, it's the last poco a poco of 2011 so what better way to end the year than with a wee quiz of proverbs? Some, we have come across in the column before, others are new. Just see if you can work out what they mean and what the corresponding English proverb might be. Then turn the paper upside down – or if you've had enough Christmas spirits, stand on your head – and check the answers! 1. Cuatro ojos ven más que dos. 2. Más vale malo conocido que bueno por conocer. 3. Antes que te cases, mira lo que haces. 4. A caballo regalado no le mire los dientes. 5. Agua pasada no mueve molina. 6. No necesita abuela. 7. Cuando el río suena, agua lleva. 8. Matar dos pájaros de un tiro. 9. Cuando el gato ne está los ratones se diviertan. 10. Más vale un pájaro en la mano que ciento volando. 1. Two heads are better than one. (Four eyes see more than two.) 2. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't know. (The bad you know is better than the good that you don't know.) 3. Look before you leap. (Before you get married, look at what you are doing.) 4. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. (Don't look at its teeth) 5. It's all water under the bridge. (Water that has passed by doesn't move the mill) 6. He/she blows his/her own trumpet. ( He/she doesn't need a Granny) 7. There's no smoke without fire. (When the river makes noise, it has water) 8. Kill two birds with one stone. (with one shot) 9. While the cat's away, the mice will play. (When the cat isn't there the mice have fun) 10. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. (One bird in your hand is worth a hundred flying)

and watch, for instance, the seals playing for any amount of time. The Koalas were kept behind screens so the only way of seeing them close up was to pay another 29 bucks to have a “photo opportunity” with them (they stood you in front of a Koala up a short tree and took your picture and, no, you didn’t get to cuddle one for your money). But if you stood on the wall and walked along it a bit, you could see over it and take all the photos you wanted, and one had a baby Koala with her, so that was good. The Wombats ( I love Wombats – no idea why, just do) were as usual asleep making their sonorous noises, and did nothing else at all. The zoo was great and the boat trip to and from it very interesting with all the views from the water of the bridge, Opera House and all the little bays along the route.

Rough times ahead

Annual roll call

I

t seems like it was only yesterday that I first wrote my first column for The News. Here it is three years later and we are still going strong. As it is customary for the final column of the year, I present my top 10 best and worst of 2011. There were some difficult choices but they seem to be line with what a lot of people are thinking.

T

he opposition parties certainly started out the way they obviously intend to carry on, giving big stick to Mariano Rajoy during the interminable debate that followed his investiture speech on Monday. Those politicians do love the sound of their own voices. Until midday Tuesday, they trotted out their usual grouches – you’ll cut social spending and the vast majority of us will soon be starving hungry, without a roof over our heads was the general drift.

R

ajoy rebuffed them all and got quite a few barbs in himself – one of them aimed at my favourite woman politician, Rosa Diez of the Union, Progress and Democracy (UP&D) party. She wants to reform the electoral system because it favours regional, usually nationalist, parties more than parties like hers which may be small (but growing daily) which covers the whole of Spain. I hope he’ll listen to her but his words indicate he might not, at least not just yet. “You only want me to reform the voting system to get more seats for your party in Parliament.”

B

ut what he said to the spokesman for the Basque nationalist coalition Amaiur, which makes no secret of its aim to break away from Spain, was the most telling. The Amaiur man was demanding rights for the ETA prisoners and a “second Transition to finish what the first Transition didn’t do”. Rajoy replied: “I owe you absolutely nothing”. And there you have it in a nutshell – thanks to his absolute majority, he hasn’t been forced to woo smaller parties – like Zapatero had to do – to be able to form a government so he hasn’t made any promises of measures that would only benefit a specific – and usually small – part of the population. He won’t have to govern for minorities – like Zapatero did – to stay in power. We are finally going to get a government that will have the interests of all Spaniards at heart.

T

he opposition parties made their bitter little gesture – they all voted against Rajoy’s investiture, to no

avail. It will be interesting to see what tactics they use to block Rajoy’s measures in the coming months. If they try to make a public nuisance of themselves via strikes and demonstrations, they will have completely misread the wishes of most Spaniards, who just want somebody to try to get them out of this recession.

A Zapatero-less future

A

t least one of my dearest wishes was answered this year. Not only has Zapatero left the government, he’s abandoning public life altogether. We won’t have to put up with any more inane grins from Mr Bean. He isn’t taking his family back to Leon, as he said he would, because his daughters want to carry on living in Madrid. By now the Zapatero family should be comfortably settled in their new home in Somosaguas, a fashionable suburb on the outskirts of Madrid. As a former head of government, Zapatero will have a seat on the Council of State, for which he will be paid around €150,000 a year. He will have a chief of staff and a personal secretary paid for by the government but he has refused to have a press chief because who wants to stay out of the limelight. He will attend some Socialist meetings, the next major one being the convention to elect a new leader on February 3rd. He doesn’t intend to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors, Felipe González and Jose Maria Aznar, who still participate in national debates but he will maintain a presence on the international stage. And an aide has said he won’t be criticising the Rajoy government during his travels, unlike Aznar who regularly attacked the Zapatero government when he travelled abroad.

I A

suppose I’ll miss Zapatero in one way – he could get my paddy up in a way that I suspect Rajoy never will be able to do! very merry Christmas and the happiest of New Years to you all. See you in January.

Worst

Best

10. Ana Botella. The wife of former prime minister José María Aznar has failed to cleanup Madrid’s air pollution as environmental chief for the city. Now she may get a shot at becoming mayor.

10. Rafael Nadal. He may have not have had his best year on the courts but we can’t forget all he has done in the past.

9. María Dolores de Cospedal. The CastillaLa Mancha premier started her term on the wrong foot by suggesting that the outgoing Socialist government was hiding bills to keep the region’s multi-million deficit under wraps. Meanwhile she gets three paychecks – from the Popular Party, from the region and as deputy for a total of nearly €500,000 annually. 8. Esperanza Aguirre. This isn’t the first time the Madrid regional premier makes the worst list. This year she is included for her proposals to make deep cuts in education prompting a series of teachers’ strikes across Madrid. 7. The Catalan nationalist CiU bloc. Artur Mas’ government is embarking on a widerange of cuts in the northeast region, including in health care services that have caused a host of strikes at area hospitals. 6. Francisco Camps. The only good thing this embattled politician did this year was to step down as Valencia’s regional premier after he was indicted in July in the dress suits case. He is currently on trial along with co-defendant Ricardo Costa before Valencia’s High Court where his testimony doesn’t match up to the evidence gathered by investigators. 5. Martin Garitano. The Bildu provincial administrator of Guipúzcoa stirred up bad blood when he began making public gestures to the families of ETA inmates. It was a bad sign coming from one of the top votergetters of the Basque abertzale radical left coalition. 4. Alberto Contador. Did he or did he not take performance enhancers? His explanation about the steak he ate was too precise – given that most people can’t recall what they had for lunch yesterday. 3. Iñaki Urdangarin, The royal son-in-law has severely tarnished the king’s good name as well as that of the House of Borbón with allegations that he diverted public money for his own use. 2. Javier Garcia Marín. “El Cuco.” One of the co-defendants in the Marta del Castillo murder trial refuses to come clean and say where she is buried. He has changed his testimony on several occasions. 1. Standard & Poor’s, Fitch and Moody’s. The rating agencies had no business creating more turbulence in the markets with their irresponsible economic outlooks on Spain and the rest of Europe.

9. Carme Chacón. The outgoing defence minister, who may run for prime minister one day, took a very prominent role in encouraging troops on Spanish missions abroad. 8. Tomás Gómez. The Madrid Socialist Party leader stood up to Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and other national leaders when he insisted on holding primaries in Madrid back in May. 7. High Court Judge Eloy Velasco. His insistence in bringing a group of former Salvadoran military men to justice in the 1989 massacre of five Spanish Jesuit priests has put international pressure on El Salvador. 6. Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart. The 85year-old duchess of Alba pretty much told everyone where to go and insisted on marrying her third husband Alfonso Diez, 25 years her junior. 5. Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba. By many accounts, the former interior minister wanted to retire after this term. But he became the brave face of defeat when the PP won a landslide victory in November. 4. Cáritas. With little fanfare, this Catholic charity has taken the lead in providing food and shelter to those Spaniards and immigrants whose lives have been devastated by the financial crisis. 3. Outgoing Economy Minister Elena Salgado. Not only did she keep her head high as Spanish finances were under the European microscope, she kept her promise that Spain would not need a bailout – at least not under the Socialists’ watch. 2. Spain’s National Basketball Team. Many of its members may not be playing in the American NBA this season, but they got a big consolation prize when they took home their second Eurobasket title in September after defeating France 98-85. 1. Platform of Those Affected by a Mortgage. This unusual grassroots group, which began in Catalonia late last year, has helped many people facing eviction from their homes. Although its success rate hasn’t been 100 percent, the organisation has called attention to the banks’ abuses in making people pay more than they should to keep their dwellings.

DAVID THE DOGMAN Safety Zone, Grey Zone & Danger Zone In a puppy’s daily life, there is a thing called a temporary “Safety Zone”. It is the time that the owner can trust the puppy to hold his urine after he has defecated or was taken for a walk. To know your puppy’s safety zone, you should first record for several days your puppy’s urinating and defecating schedules. After that, deduct 15-30 minutes from the period of minimum interval

between elimination. Do not let your puppy drink a lot of water during that time to make the safety zone work. Grey zone and danger zone are those outside this safety zone. Also, closely supervise your puppy when he is not confined in his crate.

Be Patient, Wait Do not return from a walk until your puppy defecates. Before your puppy has the chance to soil on his crate or your floor, make sure to take him outside first thing in the morning. As a pet

owner, patience must be exercised in waiting for your puppy to eliminate outdoors before going back inside. Do not forget to praise your puppy afterwards by giving him a nice treat. If your puppy is taking a very long time to eliminate and you still have some chores to finish, you can crate your puppy for the meantime. Then, every 1530 minutes take him outside until he finally defecates. Email David at david@thedogman.net with your questions.

The Mayfair Academy children held a Primary School Christmas Fair, to help raise money for the San Pedro based charity Aspandem. The children managed to raise €250 for local families and children.

There was a Pringle pot decoration competition, tombola, cake stall and many other activities. Photographed are some of the decorated pots, with children from Mayfair Primary handing over their collection to the charity Director Jose Bolea.

Donations Needed The charity shop run by Age Concern in C/ Zaragoza, Estepona has had another successful year thanks to the loyalty of customers, the generosity of the people who donate items, and the hard work of the shop volunteers. In fact it has been so successful that the stock of winter clothes has fallen rapidly and more donations are needed urgently. Please turn out all of your unwanted clothes

and bric-a-brac and donate them to Age Concern to ensure that the volunteers assisting older people in the community can continue their essential work. If you can donate items please call the shop number 608587538 to arrange collection. The shop will be closed for the festive season from 13.30 on Friday 23rd December to 10.a.m. on 3rd January 2012.

Cable TV and Internet Advantages Los Boliches, Fuengirola and parts of the El Higueron and La Capellania areas of Benalmádena are crisscrossed with a mesh of very interesting cables. Originally this network of little wires just carried cable TV – and it still does – but now with advanced technology there's also a very strong high speed Internet connection travelling along those same cables. The Eurocable’s saying “one cable and you're on” means exactly that. Nearly all the buildings, especially in Fuengirola and Los Boliches already have a cable connection so it's a simple procedure that doesn’t take long. No expensive equipment, no antennas, nor big satellite dishes not even a phone

line is needed and with 20 years’ experience to draw on the Eurocable fitters are obviously proficient. Instant international digital television; showing films, documentaries, news, sports and kids programmes from the BBC, SKY, ITV and such like, over 50 channels. Plenty of Spanish channels too, many with their original English sound tracks are available, as well as some good Scandinavian broadcasts. That's a lot of telly that you can connect to different TVs to watch or record – then you can watch three different programmes, in three different rooms at the same time, whilst surfing the web, sending an email and making a voip phone call – it's a very flexible system.

Your loving Family

The Internet side does

come down the same cable but you don't need to take both, pick and mix for your best deals on TV and/or Internet. Without getting overly techy this is good stuff, true and high speed, fully functional – no more banging on the side of your computer because it's so slow. If you are just a bit smart you can make practically free phone calls over the net anyway. The speed is as high as 15 meg, it's a local service with their own engineers and emergency numbers. Furthermore you do get what you pay for in bandwidth, unlike some providers that use phone lines. Cable set-ups are always ideal for anyone in built-up areas, is here short term or part time, like the winter months, with no outlay for

all the different receivers and dishes. One cable and/or a TV and/or a laptop or a computer are the basic items needed to get going. Packages are flexible and without a binding contract, just pay for what suits you. The Eurocable staff speak English, Dutch, Scandinavian languages and Spanish. They are helpful, the system is simple, the quality is good, there are bonuses and discounts and it is suitable for all, big homes, small apartments, bars and offices. It’s well worth a call to their office on 952 460 538, from 9.00 to 2.00 and 4.00 to 7.00 and ask Flores or Karen for details and explanations or visit their website www.eurocable.tv

First Briefing The Chief Minister the Hon. Fabian Picardo MP and the Deputy Chief Minister the Hon. Dr Joseph Garcia MP met with Leader of the Opposition the Hon. Peter Caruana QC MP and the Hon. Daniel Feetham MP.

To honour the new Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo, Oriel College, Oxford have flown the Gibraltar flag. This is the first time the Castle and Keys of Gibraltar has been flown at Oriel – in line with the tradition of hoisting the flag of countries whose prime ministers and political leaders attended the college.

Picardo said he felt highly privileged and overjoyed that Gibraltar had made its mark at Oxford with the recognition of his electoral victory. Mr Picardo added he was confident that new entrants from Gibraltar would continue to study at Oxford, Cambridge and other great British universities in the future.

The meeting had been arranged by the chief minister’s office to enable the new government to receive a briefing from Mr Caruana and raise issues

with him relating to the transition between the former GSD administration and the GSLP /Liberal adminstration. Commenting afterwards, Minister Picardo said “We agreed in the aftermath of the General Election results to meet for a briefing on pending issues. In doing so, we all put Gibraltar first and party politics aside. The meeting has been very useful.”

Beach Closed The government has decided to close access to Western Beach until further notice as a cautionary measure – due to certain circumstances in which a storm drain in La Linea was adversely affected earlier this year. This led to higher

than acceptable readings of pollution. In recent weeks readings have shown continuous high levels of pollution at the beach exceeding that of acceptable bathing water standards.

e Mooring - Tasty Pógs Christmas Homemade Meals Week I T N A had the pleasure of tasting delicious homemade lasagna at The Mooring this week – thanks to a curious incident. Earlier in the week The Mooring was buzzing with customers, when three additional ones came in. Everyone was in festive spirits and there was a great atmosphere. After about 40 minutes the two men and the woman ordered takeaways – advertised as the home-cooked specials.

T

he owner then had to pop out to buy silver foil trays to accommodate the order – normally their Meals On Wheels Service provides dishes on proper plates that are then returned, but as these were not regular customers foil trays were needed.

he trio left with their homemade orders of lambs liver with onions, gravy and fries, chicken and mushroom pie and a portion of lasagna. About half an hour after the customers had left, The Mooring received a phone call from the woman. While she acknowledged that the liver and the pie were obviously homemade, she insisted that the lasagna was not. She said she had seen the lasagna being carried into the restaurant in a shopping bag!

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol

W

henever an old movie gets remade, you always have to watch the original to be able to compare and deliver a fair verdict. Most of the time the original is the best, like “The Italian Job” or “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory”. However, the 1973 made for TV movie “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” isn’t.

By Brad Bird, Starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg It’s the fourth outing for Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible franchise and this latest rip-roarer makes up for the disappointing third instalment. The Cruiser may be 50, but he looks mighty fit and, as ever, does all his own stunts, including one which will definitely make its way onto the all-time top ten stunt list when he clings to the top of the world’s tallest building in Dubai. The plot is pretty

familiar – madman wants to start WW III, there’s a global terrorism bombing plot, Mission: Impossible team unfairly blamed and have to go undercover to fight to restore their reputation and save the world. Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and the team are on their own in Ghost Protocol mode – there’s no back-up, no help and no contact. It’s done with panache, and is set to be THE box office blockbuster for the festive

season. The critics have mainly given it a firm thumbs up and it’s been compared very favourably to some of the very best of the Bond outings.

hardly a surprise, as for her music – she was a one hit wonder. In 2006 we were all introduced to Amy Winehouse and her bad girl reputation, with her infamous hit Rehab – the album “Back to Black” was a huge success, and I suppose it had two or three decent tracks on it. However, Amy seemed to be more famous for running down the street covered in blood, getting drunk in nightclubs and doing drugs, than actually singing. Her reputation, clearly overshadowed her music. Let’s be honest here, before “Back to Black” there was “Frank”, an album no one had heard of until she died. Now it’s here, there and everywhere and over

uillermo Del Toro best known for “Pan’s Labyrinth” has produced this remake, and he really knows how to give you a fright. The 2011 version of “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” came out earlier this year, and although it has Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce in it, don’t let that put you off. Katie Holmes gives a surprisingly strong performance, Pearce’s character is quite unlikeable and the little girl Bailee Madison carries the movie effortlessly.

It’s stylish, moves at break-neck pace and has some gripping set pieces and Tom Cruise is better than he has been for some time. So grab a bag of popcorn, settle yourself firmly into your cinema seat and get ready for an exhilarating movie experience.

Quite a Disappointment Before I start, let me just say, not everyone is going to agree with me on this, but this is what I believe and how I feel about Amy Winehouse. Yes, it is sad that she died, but it was

G

priced. “Back to Black” then came out, and afterwards nothing for years (music wise). Then this year she records “Lioness: Hidden Treasure” and dies. Now I don’t want to appear mean, but the album is boring. Who in their right mind re-records The Girl From Ipanema? She must have been high as a kite to want to record lift music – seriously, didn’t anyone see the red flags? When Amy did Valerie years ago, it was a cool little

By Abigail Tyler

D

on’t get me wrong I enjoyed the original very much, but there wasn’t any explanation as to what the little demons wanted or why they were attacking Sally. The remake, has a little back story about the man who used to live there and lost his son to the creatures – and whenever the creatures emerge they need to take the life of a child and eat their teeth. Bizarre, I know, but it’s an explanation, which is better than what the original gave you.

A

lso the remake is about a little girl who is sent to go and live with her father in this big old mansion, that her father is renovating to sell. The original is about a couple that move into an old house, but it’s the wife who starts to hear the voices and, her husband doesn’t see the creatures and is almost always away on business.

T

number but the version on the new album is slow and depressing. Why ruin a perfectly good song? And don’t get me started on her version of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? This girl was clearly not in top form when making this new album and, to be totally honest, had she not died the album most probably would have bombed. It’s truly a sad story. If she only had had people around her who really cared about her and not her fame, perhaps the outcome would have been different. All she needed was someone to look out for her and get her some help, not to be chased around by the press and dragged about like a puppet. As for the album, it’s not great, save your money.

escape, causing chaos.

he little creatures in the original are like scary, creepy little men, the new creatures are like little rat people or big rats with human-ish features – they are really, really creepy. Another aspect is that obviously something made in 1973, isn’t going to age that well, and when you look at the décor and wardrobe, it can make you laugh. The remake is set is set in a gorgeous old house, with a beautiful staircase – the film is worth watching, if for the house alone.

T

he story of the remake is a little different to the original, but I personally think it’s better ‘cause it also makes more sense. The basic line to both movies is that they move into an old house that has a secret, the secret is bricked up in an old chimney that whispers naughty evil things. Then the chimney gets reopened at some point and evil demon type creatures

T

he original is good, but the remake really gives you a run for your money, it made me jump out my seat more than once. Even the opening scene with the chisel in the mouth, made me cringe. Yes, this is definitely one to watch, it’s creepy, spooky and with a few jumps. So, if you’re getting tired with the holly jolly season, this should put a smile on your face.

Any feeling of loss of direction will subside and you will be working in overdrive to help expand your horizons. There is nothing more frustrating for a dynamic Aries than the thought of stagnating. You need progress and you desire results. Any barriers that were in the way or confusion regarding misinterpreting another’s intentions will fade away and the truth will be apparent. You have a green light and that is all the encouragement you will ever need to get moving. A steady and methodical approach is the way to approach challenges this week, calculated moves not impulsive ones will win the day. Change and new experiences are calling you; you are able to sense this acutely and yet at the same time know this course also needs your support and unerring concentration. A connection that integrates your past and future may jolt feelings of doubt but these are secondary and habitual reactive tendencies from the past that have no place in your bright future. You may have been a bit grumpy lately just as the realisation is dawning that life is starting to work itself out. Your emotions and passions are steaming and you are reminded that the best things in life are actually free. Someone may need a hand and could call upon you for some kind of support. Give with an open heart Gemini and think nothing of what can be gained; it is enough to feel content that you have helped another. Your cup is about to be filled up to the brim. Live in the moment for surely that is what matters the most – what is going on now, the present day and the rippling effect we have upon each other. There is something that you need to make your mind up on; it is time to sweep the past clean with a good sturdy broom, definite and determined. Dragging the dirt forward with you will only muddy the waters. Actively work towards looking at an ache, the reason for it and sweep it up. Consolidating your position and taking the time to review your life and whether your essential needs are being met is the focus of this week. A lot has come to a head recently and you don’t wish to sustain anything that does not contribute or support where you are headed. A time of true renewal is before you and you want your field to be planted with produce that will give you a bountiful harvest – time to get rid of the weeds. Pay attention to your health and don’t let yourself get run down. There is a lot going on and you will not want to miss out on the events of the season but at the same time you want to stay well enough to enjoy yourself. Moderation is the key and you may have to learn to say NO. Something emotional could be under your health problems and dragging you down. Stay confident by believing in yourself, your abilities - have faith and the emotions will shift, boosting your spirits.

There is something that needs to be said, you have avoided this confrontation for far too long now and there is no escaping it – not if you wish to move down your chosen pathway. Speak the words that are on your tongue and the blocks will move aside and let you continue on your journey. Your voice is the key September 23rd - now Libra. What you say, how you say it and the volume and intensity drives the whole deal. It is time for you to wield the sword of truth. October 22nd

This is a very easy recipe and they look great as a decoration on top of any Christmas desserts.

Frosty cranberries. Ingredients: • 30 ml water • 15 ml pasteurized egg white or liquid egg substitute

• 336 g fresh cranberries • 200 g white sugar

Directions In a medium bowl, stir together the water and egg white until blended but not whipped. Coat cranberries with this mixture. Spread the sugar out on a baking sheet, and

roll the cranberries in it until they are coated. Dry at room temperature for two hours. Use as garnishes for desserts, or eat them plain.

Filo Parcels (Cont’ from last week) For the Sweet Fillings: Prepare the filo as before. Sweet Filling 1: Put ½ teaspoon jam in the middle of the filo. Sweet filling 2: Do the same with lemon curd. Sweet filling 3: put a square of chocolate in the middle. Sweet filling 4: Cut the soaked fruit into

small pieces and place in the middle of the filo. You could also put a small bit of Philadelphia cheese in the middle then top with either fruit or the chocolate pieces. Pull the edges of the filo up and twist into a little parcel. Bake in the pre-heated oven for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown but, keep an eye on it as filo can cook from white to black in minutes!

You are often known as the loner of the zodiac but this week you could end up feeling more on your own than usual. The depths of your emotions are strong and there is a perfectly good reason why you feel the way you do – you will be highly focused on what you need here in order to feel your best. Miracles seem miles away and not available to you – but if you do the legwork your efforts will find a magical way of working and your wishes just may come true.

It will become apparent by the end of this year who is really prepared to stand by you and the difference between those who are in it just for themselves, all in all, this is a revealing time for you. Romance blossoms this week and allow yourself to indulge in the lightness and fun that is all around, a good laugh will do you good and raise your spirits. Pay close attention to non-verbal messages that others are sending you, there could be more going on than you realise.

Christmas week for you is all about taking action and following through on promises made. You are putting in all the effort, all the work to help others out. Giving, compromising whilst trying to also keep the communication channels level and promote cooperation between friends. It is quite exhausting, so also remember yourself in it all, you will have to say NO sometimes for your own sanity. Be positive but also kind to you.

THE JUDGES SAID IT WAS TOO CLOSE TO CALL BUT VIEWERS DECIDED …

ey were just wild about Harry! .....The favourite wins the final of 2011 Strictly Come Dancing the glitter ball trophy was not the only thing sparkling in the battle of the ballroom in Blackpool on saturday night. the three finalists “daddy” Jason donovan (the oldest at 43), pint-sized powerhouse Chelsee Healey and dancing drummer Harry Judd – all thrilled the audience with dances to die for and judges' scores to match. Mr sourpuss Craig revel Horwood was actually beaming, there were tens from Len goodman, Alesha dixon gushed ecstatically and as for Bruno tonioli he couldn't keep still, positively writhing with enthusiasm at every performance.

At the end of the first part of the show it was Jason who topped the judges' leader board – just – but after the telephone votes were counted he and his partner Kristina rihanoff had to leave the floor to Harry dancing with Aliona vilani, and Chelsee with Pasha Kovalev for the dance off. All three had performed brilliantly, reprising one of their former dances (Harry's lively and graceful quickstep, Chelsee's dynamic jive and Jason's colourful “fan tango”) followed by a showdance with no holds barred, producing some pretty awesome and professional moves from the three contestants and brilliant

choreography from their respective partners. there were standing ovations from the studio audience for every dance. But, of course, on finals night there could be only one winner – the decision was not up to the judges this time and the audience chose the favourite, Harry. the 25-year-old Mcfly drummer had said at the beginning of the series “i love a challenge and this will certainly be the biggest challenge i've taken on”. it was a challenge he rose to time and time again with expert Len goodman telling him in Blackpool “if you were a stick of rock you'd

have 'talent' written right through it!” When the results were announced Harry was mobbed by his bandmates who rushed on to the floor to congratulate him. His reaction was “Wow!”, “so surreal” and “absolutely incredible” – with, of course, hugs, kisses and thanks to the gorgeous and talented Aliona (who was runner up last year with former partner Matt Baker). so that’s strictly over for another year, but if you can't live without it then tune in the Christmas special on BBC One on Christmas day!

Jackson Auction Cleans Up The contents of the house where Michael Jackson lived before he died have sold at a Los Angeles auction for almost $1 million (£646,000). Some 500 items were on sale from the mansion the singer rented, including furniture, ornaments and paintings. Among the lots was an armoire upon which Jackson wrote a message to himself that

fetched $25,750. Prior to the auction, organisers had estimated total sales to be between $200,000 and $400,000. Also sold was a Victorian Revival-style bedroom suite, an 18th-Century French clock and a shower bench on which Jackson had drawn stick men. Only a handful of auction items bore a personal connection to the singer and his family,

as most were part of the rented surroundings. The ornate headboard from the bed where Jackson's body was found had also been due to go under the hammer but was removed from the sale last month at the request of Jackson's

family. However, the rug that had been beneath the bed sold for $15,360.

Gay marriage 'improves health'

Legalising same-sex marriage in the state of Massachusetts has led to a significant drop in the number of visits by gay men to health clinics, researchers from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health have found. Same-sex marriages are now legal in six US states, with Massachusetts the first to allow them in 2003. The Columbia University team surveyed the demand for medical and mental health care from 1,211 gay men registered with a particular health clinic in the 12 months prior to the change, and the 12 months afterwards. They found a 13% drop in healthcare visits after the law was

enacted, and a reduction in blood pressure problems, depression and "adjustment disorders", which the authors claimed could be the result of reduced stress. Lesbian women were not included in the study as there were insufficient numbers to give a statistically meaningful result. Previous research had already suggested that

gay men are more likely to suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts than heterosexual men, and that social exclusion may be partly responsible. The researchers said their findings suggest that removing these barriers improves the health of gay and bisexual men. A spokesman for the Terrence Higgins Trust, a UK-based sexual health

Christmas tree syndrome discovered If you’re feeling under the weather this festive season, you just might have Christmas tree syndrome, according to researchers at the State University of New York. After noticing a rise in respiratory illnesses in the weeks on both sides of December 25th, they analysed clippings from 28 Christmas trees and identified what they believe is the cause of the problem – the mould growing on the trees, whose spores when breathed in can lead to problems including itchy noses, watery eyes, coughing, shortness of breath, chest pains, sinus congestion, feelings of fatigue and problems sleeping. They warned that some of the mould identified can even lead to long term lung problems and conditions such as bronchitis and

pneumonia. The mould occurs on the trees naturally, but thrives in the warm conditions of a wellheated home at Christmas. The researchers offered two options for avoiding the problems – an artificial tree or none at all. They

offered this advice to people not wishing to go to such an extreme – first, hose down the tree in the garden and leave it to dry before bringing it inside, then remove it quickly after Christmas Day, and not on the traditional Twelfth Night.

e Winter Solstice Today (21st December) is a very important date in the astronomy calendar; it is the winter solstice or the shortest day of the year. he reason that the earth has seasons is because it is not standing straight up but instead is tilted over by about 23½ º. As the earth orbits around the sun during the summer months the northern hemisphere is pointed towards the sun and we receive more of the sun’s rays and get hot, long days and short nights. Then six months later the northern hemisphere is pointed away from the sun and then we have long nights and short days and of course it is colder.

On Friday, we took the tram into Melbourne and strolled around Victoria Market for several hours, checked out the tourist site options and bought a threeday tram pass. In the evening we were treated to a show in the centre of the City – the sequel to Lloyd Webber’s Phantom. Called “Love Never Dies” the story continues where Phantom of the Opera left off. The Phantom, of course, did not die and Christine (the love interest) was lured back to a theatre, this time on Coney Island where he had been whisked away by his stalwart wardrobe mistress to avoid prosecution in Paris. He made a bet with her husband, Raoul, that he could get her to sing and, if he did, Christine would have

The following day, Thursday, we boarded yet another aircraft for the journey from Sydney to Melbourne, just a one hour flight and so it seemed a very short time in the air. We were met at the airport by my husband’s brother, Stephen, and whisked off home to our lovely comfortable suite at their house in a Melbourne suburb where we had dinner of the best lamb we had eaten in a long time with salad and potato salad.

to stay with the Phantom and Raoul would have to leave her and the little boy (who it turned out was really the son of the Phantom anyway) forever with him. I won’t tell you any more, other than the fact that, if it comes to Spain, it’s worth going to see but don’t expect to hear any of the old, much loved songs – they’re not in it. So,….. Saturday came and it was the big birthday day. My husband turned 60 so we went for a ride on the famous Puffing Billy steam train to some lakes, had tea and cake then came back. The evening a total surprise. was Melbourne’s tram system also has restaurant trams. My husband had absolutely no

idea where we were going until we got on the tram. It was decked out à la Orient Express and the food and service throughout the twoand-a-half hour trip was superb. Today, Sunday, we have transferred to Sorrento and are here for a couple of days before returning to Melbourne for Christmas. I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

he most extreme point during summer usually occurs on June 21st or 22nd and the most extreme point during winter is on either 21st or 22nd December. At this point the North Pole of the earth is tilted as far away from the sun as it can be and so we have the shortest day of the year. A line drawn around the north of the earth called the Arctic circle represents the extremes of the sun’s range. On this day the sun will not rise above the Arctic Circle and vice versa – the sun will not set at any point in the southern hemisphere beyond the Antarctic circle.

A

nother line drawn around the earth called the tropic of Capricorn marks the position that the Sun will be directly overhead tomorrow, the winter solstice. While a line called the tropic of Cancer in the northern hemisphere marks the point where the sun will be overhead on June 21st, the summer solstice.

H

alf way between these two dates are the equinoxes, these are days of equal day and night when the earth is standing straight up on its end, as viewed from the sun. The spring equinox occurs on March 21st and the autumn equinox is on September 21st. On the equinoxes it doesn’t matter where you stand, be it from the North Pole to the South Pole you will receive 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness.

hese dates have been celebrated for thousands of years by cultures all around the world. It is believed that Stonehenge in England was built to mark the summer and winter solstices and even today the date for Easter is calculated as being the first Sunday that follows the first full moon following the spring equinox.

A

nd many thousands of years ago during Neolithic times the winter

solstice used to occur not on 21st December but on 25th December. It was only because of a rearrangement of the calendar when Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian Calendar in 1582 that December 21st /22nd became the winter solstice. And before Jesus Christ was born the winter solstice was always celebrated by almost every cultural society with great ceremonies.

F

easting on slaughtered meats, decorating the house with holly and mistletoe, lighting candles, exchanging of gifts and drinking freshly brewed ales was the norm for ancient pagan societies in ancient Britain.

I

t was only after the Romans invaded and tried to stamp out all pagan rituals and introduce their own Christian beliefs that the celebration of the winter solstice was faded out and replaced by a celebration that we now call Christmas. But if you think about all of the long-held traditions of feasting, holly, mistletoe, drinking and lighting candles and lights none of them refer to the birth of Jesus. They are all pagan rituals handed down through thousands of years by our rebellious ancestors.

I

n prehistoric times worship of the sun was paramount as it brought life and changes to the earth and since the winter solstice is seen as the reversal of the sun's movements in the sky, then concepts of the birth or rebirth of sun gods have been common. And, in cultures using winter solstice based calendars, the year as being reborn has been celebrated with regard to the birth of their gods and so it was easy to see why the birth of the Messiah was associated with this special day.

S

o although I too will be opening all my presents on Christmas morning can I ask you to remember our ancestors celebrations and wish you all a Very Merry Solstice!

Wins for Ian Poulter Windy conditions at and Lee Westwood La Cala for C.O.G.S. Ian Poulter overhauled home hero Geoff Ogilvy to clinch the Australian Masters title in Melbourne. Poulter, 35, trailed Ogilvy by two strokes overnight but hit a finalround 67 to win by three shots at 15 under. Ogilvy slipped back with a 73 to end 11 under behind Marcus Fraser (64) and Peter Senior (70), while world number one Luke Donald shot 72 for four under. The Florida-based Poulter, who battled food poisoning on Friday, added: "I love being in contention, that's why I play this game of golf. If you're down the field there's no adrenalin, there's no excitement, there's no real interest. "So that's why I practise hard to put myself in this position to enjoy the fact of being under pressure because you find out who you are."

"To come down here the week before Christmas and to win this tournament is very

special," he said. "I had a message from Justin Rose (former champion) who said, 'Put a nice gold jacket in your wardrobe like I have,' and it's nice to do that." Lee Westwood ended his 2011 on a high with a seven-shot victory at the

Thailand Golf Championship. The win sees the 38-yearold move above Northern Ireland's Rory McIlory into second in the world rankings. The Englishman had made a stunning start to the Asian Tour event and was a record 18 strokes under par after 36 holes. And after his finalround 69, Westwood said: "I've amazed myself really. It's been staggering." The Worksop golfer began the day only four shots clear of South African Charl Schwartzel, having led by 11 at halfway after following up a stunning 12under-par 60 in his first round with a 64 in his

second. Westwood, who has rejoined the US Tour for 2012, said he plans to take a break over the Christmas period and then improve on his fitness for the new year.

Christmas Cracker Pairs Aloha Superbowl recently held their annual Christmas bowling party, the “Christmas Cracker Pairs” which was, as always, well supported. Twenty-four teams played in two sections playing three alternate one-hour sessions and involved players of all ability levels including some who started playing in the very popular Pro-Am tournaments held during the summer.

A short trip to La Cala for C.O.G.S.’s last competition of 2011 with a gusting wind to make the playing conditions very difficult, but it did not affect all players as some scores showed. It was my last event as this year’s captain, in a year I have enjoyed very much. It has been an honour and a privilege to serve such a great bunch of guys, who love their golf, but also enjoy the social side afterwards with a few beers. Special thanks personally must go to Andy Macfarlane Secretary and to Dave Haworth Treasurer for all their support they have given me, and to Terry Birtles for his organisation of the Par Three competitions. This year has had some up and downs – the ups have been great and the downs have been quite challenging at times – but I think all in all the year went well. I would also, on behalf of all members, like to thank Ian Thorne and Russell Wood of Travel Services Spain for sorting out the playing venues for this year and we wish them all success in 2012. Back to the day at La Cala. Nearest the pin in two shots was won by Charles Randell on hole 3. Nearest the pin was won by Nig Bowler on hole 16. Longest drive was won by Ian Thorne on hole Mike and Dave had an inferior shots difference to the others who could not be separated so it came down to a one bowl shoot out between the two skips with Geoff Land prevailing.

Going into the final round of games more than half the pairs were still in with a good chance of winning but in the end

For the main comp of the day, the individual title –in third position with 34 points was Charles Randell, in second position with 35 points was Brian Millwood. You should have seen his face, a smile a mile wide, he has been close so many times. Well done Brian, cut at last. In first position with a great score of 41 points was Adam Robinson. Well done Adam, in those winds you played your socks off. On Saturday night we made the trip by coach to hold our end of season dinner and dance and prize giving at El Chaparral. There was a good turnout of some forty-two players, wives and guests attended and a great time was had by all. Thanks to all the staff there and to Alan for the music.

Annual Prize Awards results as follows. Best player off 28 handicap was won by Brian Millwood. Best player any 6 from 11 was won by Dell Allwood. For the golfer of the year this year’s winner was Charles Randell. In second position was Andy Macfarlane. And in third place was Russell Wood. Congratulations to you all from all the members. Well that’s it my year over, thanks again for all the support I have received and let me say again, a pleasure to serve such a lovely bunch of guys I love you all. Best of luck for next year’s captain elect and see you all on the 9th January 2012 at eight o’clock for our AGM at the Bistro. Report by Nig Bowler, Captain.

Record for paddler British sprint canoeist Paul Wycherley kayaked across the English Channel in a new record time on Sunday, beating the mark set by his coach Ian Wynne. Wynne, a canoeing bronze medallist at the Athens Olympics in 2004, crossed in two hours and 59 minutes in 2007. But

Wycherley took 31 minutes off Wynne's time in ideal conditions, finishing in two hours and 28 minutes. The Guildford paddler raised in excess of £100,000 for charity with his expedition, setting off from Dover at 0935 BST and arriving at France's Cap Gris Nez just after midday.

Soldado Punishes Malaga Valencia 2 - 0 Malaga After a morale-boosting first leg cup win away to Getafe in the week, thanks to a last minute Juanmi goal, this was a pointer to how far Malaga had come before the La Liga break for Christmas. It was a largely uneventful first half hour, Rondon shot over for Malaga, Juanmi and Joaquin had half chances but Malaga could not find the cutting edge. They were punished though on 36 minutes, Valencia’s Soldado latching on to a

great Jonas ball to round Caballero and slide the ball into an empty net. Malaga had plenty of possession but Valencia looked threatening and it was no surprise to see them score again. Alba nutmegged Demichelis and his great cross was met again by Soldado who volleyed it in at the far post. Van Nistelrooy, on as a sub, had a couple of half chances but in truth Malaga never looked like winning this game. And they find themselves in 7th

World PDC Darts first round shock exit Rushden's James Richardson says he wants to show the world what he can do, having beaten Raymond van Barneveld at the PDC World Darts Championship. The 37year-old former bricklayer, who only turned professional in January, beat the five-time champion 3-0 in their firstround match.

Glad to see the back of him

"I'm here to do a job and don't want to make the numbers up," Richardson said. "I'm in the last 32 – it's a dream. And I don't want to be bricklaying this time next year." He added: "My wife said to me this morning that she hadn't booked the turkey for Christmas. "I said 'Don't worry about the turkey ! I've got a job to do at Alexandra Palace – that will come later.'"

SPOTLIGHT FOOTBALL

West Ham have been warned that the Olympic Stadium is not relying on a football club to guarantee a successful legacy after next year's Games. A new bidding process to find a tenant for the venue begins on Tuesday. The OPLC pulled the plug on the deal with West Ham and Newham Council in October after running into a series of legal challenges from Tottenham, whose own bid for the stadium was rejected in February. Andrew Altman, chief executive of the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC), says his organisation is still keen to do a deal with the Championship side. But he believes the stadium can cover its running costs even if the Hammers do not secure a new rental deal.

Tube strikes threaten Boxing day games Boxing Day fixtures at Arsenal and Chelsea are under serious threat from the Tube strike with plans under consideration to postpone at least one of the games for 24 hours. Arsenal are due to host Wolves on Monday at 3pm and Chelsea are scheduled to kick off at home to Fulham at 1pm. Planned industrial action by Tube drivers, however, has thrown both games into jeopardy because of the number of stadium staff and supporters who will rely upon London Underground to reach the Emirates and Stamford Bridge. Arsenal and Chelsea have been advised that the strike threat is not an empty one. Transport for London bosses launched a High Court challenge on Monday after crisis talks with the Aslef union broke down.

Rookie of the year England's Tom Lewis, who shared the lead in The Open as an amateur and then won on his third professional start, has been named the European Tour's rookie of the year.
