EXTRAORDINARY AND UNEXPECTED MEASURES - NATIONAL NEWS
Second round of cuts to be announced After announcing spending cuts of €8.9 billion last Friday, Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro (pictured right) said on Monday that the Cabinet will unveil further measures to rein in the budget deficit at its Cabinet meeting this week.
The government of new Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has vowed to meet Spain's target of reducing the public deficit to 4.4% of gross domestic product in 2012. Last Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria told a press conference: "This is the beginning of the beginning. We are facing an extraordinary,
unexpected situation, which will force us to take extraordinary and unexpected measures." Taxes on the wealthiest Spaniards will also be raised for at least two years, raising €6 billion, she said. Meanwhile, in an interview with the Cadena SER radio station, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said the government is not ruling out a rise in the standard value-added tax (VAT) rate, which currently stands at 18 per cent – one of the lowest in the EU – in the state budget for this

Montoro did not say if the new measures – to be announced on Thursday – would include further belttightening or initiatives to boost growth. The minister said the new batch of measures will show Spain's European partners that the country has a government "capable of taking decisions". The first wave of austerity measures included a freeze on public sector wages for another year and ruled out practically all government hiring.

WORLD Greetings from Oz!
k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
As anyone who has ever had a company knows, the company is only as good as the people that put their time and effort into it and I’m immensely proud of the way our coworkers are smoothly running the place while we are away. It’s always a little difficult not knowing what’s happening and I’m pleased to say that I have had emails from everyone keeping me in touch – I even had a photo sent of our board. The board is a huge white board where we write any new orders, changes etc and I got one last week that showed it full to bursting which shows that everyone is working really hard. So I think I may just stay here for another six months or so…. Only kidding!
I hope you all had a wonderful christmas and new Year and here’s to a healthy and prosperous 2012 to all of us.
On 5th January the Reyes Magos will be arriving in most towns and villages bringing sweets and presents for the children. See p17 for some of the main “Cabalgatas”.

I said last week that the birthday had come and gone but that seems to have gone un-noticed and we’re running around like idiots from here to there and back again. The news from Korea is a bit unsettling with announcements being made about every one of their citizens being prepared to die for their country and one has to wonder what their “powers that be” have up their sleeves that their citizens would need to do such a thing. The unrest across the globe is worrying for the future of the planet but we just have to trust that the leaders keep their heads and don’t cause any more suffering.

Charges against king's son-in-law firm up According to the anti-corruption prosecutor working on the Palma Arena case, Pedro Horrach, the king's sonin-law Iñaki Urdangarin was the "visible face" of a money-diversion operation run through his not-for-profit Nóos Institute and was involved in "invisible transfers" to fiscal paradises abroad through front companies. Urdangarin, his business partner Diego Torres, and high-ranking former members of the Popular Party in the Balearic Islands and Valencia are accused of misappropriation of public funds, falsifying
documents, fraud and corruption for organising "rigged tenders" and issuing false invoices. Horrach said that before Urdangarin left his posts under orders from the Royal Household in June
2006, he squirrelled away €676,000 through his private company Aizoon. Urdangarin and Torres also owned a front company called De Goes Centre for Stakeholder Management, with accounts in Belize,
Luxembourg and London. According to Horrach, who has based his accusations on documents from tax authorities and the police's financial crimes unit, De Goes received €300,000 from Nóos, and carried out
"invisible transfers" overseas of €420,000 and €50,000. Urdangarin has been ordered to appear before a Palma court on February 25th.
Ex-minister probed 10th anniversary on corruption claim of peseta's demise The Supreme Court is to investigate former Public Works chief and government spokesman José Blanco over accusations of influence peddling. A judge in Lugo, Galicia, investigating a case
known as Operation Champion has found enough evidence against Blanco, to turn over that part of the case to the Supreme Court, the only tribunal that may try a member of Congress. Jorge
Dorribo, a pharmaceutical entrepreneur, said he paid Blanco €400,000 to get a public subsidy and speed up the process of obtaining the necessary permits for his company, Laboratorios Nupel.

Official figures have confirmed that the euro, which replaced the peseta on January 1st 2002, caused a general price rise that was not matched by a similar wage hike, something that most Spaniards suspected all along – a suspicion that governments during that period poohpoohed. But the figures
now show that salaries rose by an average 14 per cent over the last decade, while food prices rose by 48 per cent, housing by 66 per cent and public transport by 45 to 58 per cent. However, TV sets, music systems and DVD players are 62 per cent less expensive and large household appliances are four per cent cheaper.
RTVE may return to commercial advertising With the new government slashing its budget by €200 million, the administrative council of Radio-Television Española (RTVE) is to meet today (Wednesday) to study how the cutback will affect the state broadcaster. The network is still adapting to the commercial-free financing scheme introduced by the Socialist government at the beginning of last year. Some board members are considering reintroducing advertising to help offset the cutback and the idea has been floated of pulling the plug on one of its channels. Besides its flagship La Primera, RTVE also owns and operates La 2, Canal 24 horas, Clan-TV, TVE-HD and Teledeporte. It also has five radio stations. Whatever measures are taken, RTVE officials have
said that there will be no layoffs. Before discussing possible solutions, the administrative council had to determine if reduction of revenue will have to go hand-in-hand with a
reduction in spending. One of the biggest events that is already in jeopardy is the London 2012 Olympics. RTVE will have to pay € 70 million for the transmission rights.

Road deaths at 50 year low There were 1,479 deaths on Spain's roads last year – the first time the figure has been below 1,500 in the past 50 years. The drop continued a trend which started eight years ago. When Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz announced the figures on Monday, he described them
as “magnificent” and “extraordinarily positive”. He said the historic low was largely due to the road safety campaigns instigated by Traffic Authority director
Pere Navarro, who was appointed by the Socialist government in 2004. He added, however, that there were still 1,479 reasons “for not dropping our guard”.
Health figures show that deaths from heart attacks have decreased by 10 per cent while the number of children suffering from asthma attacks requiring emergency medical attention has dropped by 15 per cent. And the labour unions report that bars and restaurants did not lay off workers because clients decided to stay home and smoke in comfort. In fact, in some regions such as Madrid there are more bars than ever. The only “negative” note is that cigarette sales have dropped by 17 per cent, reducing the government's tax income.

War on downloads to continue The government has approved the so-called Sinde anti-piracy law which the Socialist government decided was too hot to handle. The law is named after former Culture Minister Angeles Gonzalez-Sinde. Her successor, José Ignacio Wert, whose portfolio includes education and sports, told reporters last week after the swearing-in ceremony of his secretary of state for culture, José María Lassalle: "No one is going to respect the culture of a country that leads in the ranking of illegal downloads. We won't get anywhere if this continues." MADRID
More Spaniards seeking aid The Catholic charity Cáritas has predicted that the number of people seeking its services could rise dramatically this year because of a worsening economic crisis. The agency, which provides a wide range of aid, served more than 114,000 people in Madrid alone in 2011, Cáritas sources said. The majority were Spanish citizens.Cáritas has set up a Solidarity Emergency Fund with €2 million in donations to help cover the basic needs of families, including providing them with food and shelter.

reat to cut power to central jail
France is convinced Iran is developing nuclear weapons and should face "stricter sanctions", Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said and urged EU countries to follow the US in freezing Iranian central bank assets and imposing an embargo on oil exports. Iran has been holding a series of naval exercises in the Gulf, and on Monday said it had successfully testfired a shore-to-sea Qader cruise missile, a shorter range Nasr and later, a surface-to-surface Nour missile. A medium-range surface-to-air missile was successfully launched on
Sunday, Iranian media reported. Iran has conducted 10 days of exercises near the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's oil passes. Tehran has admitted that "mock" exercises on shutting the Strait had been
carried out, but said there was no intention of closing it. Observers said shutting the Strait would be too economically, politically and possibly militarily damaging for Tehran and that the exercises were staged to show that Iran owns the Gulf and has the military capability to
defend any threat to its dominance. Iran has consistently denied Western charges that it is trying to develop nuclear weapons, claiming its programme is peaceful – it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity to meet growing domestic demand.
The national power company threatened on Monday to cut the electricity supply to the main prison unless it pays its overdue bills in the next few weeks. da afghanistan Breshna Sherkat said it is contemplating similar action against several government departments which have
also failed to pay bills. The company manages the generation and distribution of electricity across afghanistan and estimates it is owed about £25 million. a spokesman said the ministry of justice which administers the central prison was among its worst clients.

Hungarians oppose new constitution Tens of thousands of people have been protesting in Budapest over Hungary's controversial new constitution, a day after it came into force. The country's governing Fidesz party pushed the law through parliament in April after winning a twothirds majority in parliamentary elections. The protests were held near a gala event organised by the government on Monday to celebrate the new
constitution. Protesters chanted slogans denouncing the centreright Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, and carried placards denouncing his "dictatorship" as officials arrived for the event. "Viktor Orban and his servants turned Hungary from a promising place to the darkest spot in
Europe," Socialist MP Tibor Szanyi told reporters. Opponents say the new constitution threatens democracy by removing checks and balances set up in 1989 when Communism fell. The EU and US had also asked for the law to be withdrawn. The dispute
has cast a shadow over talks on a new financing agreement with the EU and IMF, which is vital for market confidence in the central European country. As the public mood worsens, so do the country's ratings, affecting the chances of attracting foreign investment, and creating more jobs.
Lena Paahlsson has found her wedding ring on a carrot growing in her garden – 16 years after she lost it. The whitegold band went missing in her kitchen in 1995 when she took it off to do some Christmas baking with her daughters at the family farm. Mrs Paahlsson was pulling up carrots in her garden when she noticed one with the gold band fastened tightly around it. She believes the ring was probably lost in vegetable peelings that were turned into compost. China
ousands of ruins 'disappear' The government has said about 44,000 of the country’s 700,000 ancient ruins, temples and other cultural sites have disappeared, after carrying out the country's first heritage census for more than 20 years. an official said many of the sites were unprotected and had been demolished to make way for construction projects. even the iconic Great wall of China has been threatened by erosion and unauthorised development, as conservation rules are flouted by hikers and exploited by local villagers who charge their own admission fees.

Untested fuel additive in breast implants A fuel additive untested in clinical trials was used in breast implants that have since been banned, the French radio station RTL reported on Monday. RTL said Baysilone, normally associated with the oil or rubber industries, was found in a breakdown of the implant, made by Poly Implant Prothese (PIP). The report was categorically denied by a lawyer acting for PIP, who said the product was not industrial but a food product used in lipstick. The company was shut down in
2010. Although the French health safety agency was already aware the defective implants contained industrial rather than medical grade silicone, no mention has been made of additives from the petrol industry. French authorities have advised 30,000 women in France to have the PIP implants removed as a
precaution because of an estimated 5% rupture rate. The French health safety agency says it has registered 1,143 ruptures and 495 inflammatory reactions from the implants. An estimated 300-400,000 women were given the implants, mainly in Latin America and elsewhere in Europe.
Venezuela lowers compensation The Venezuela government has said it will pay Exxon Mobil only $255 million of the $908 million in compensation ruled by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris on Monday for assets nationalised in 2007. Venezuela’s national oil company, PDVSA, arrived at that figure because Exxon owed $191 million relating to the financing of an oil project in the country
and had previously used international courts to freeze $300 million in Venezuela's US accounts. Exxon had reportedly sought $10 billion in compensation for the nationalisation of its heavy crude upgrading project in Venezuela's oil rich Orinoco belt. The Venezuelan government said in September it had offered Exxon $1bn to settle the case. It is one of many
arbitration cases currently under consideration after President Venezuelan Hugo Chavez ordered the nationalisation of the assets of some oil companies including Exxon and Conoco Phillips. "They must be elated that they got off so cheap. It's certainly a happy new year for Venezuela," said a spokesman for Caracas Capital Markets after the ICC announced its ruling.

New Year’s Eve Massacre Private Pensions in Police have named the four victims of the New Year’s Day shoot out
A report warns that there has been a "seismic collapse" in private sector pensions, and that the gap between private and public pensions is widening.
Four people were found dead after a shooting at a house in Horden, near Peterlee, County Durham late on Sunday. Officers were alerted when a number of phone calls were made to police reporting shots had been fired inside the semidetached property. The bodies of a 42-yearold man and three women were discovered at the house in Greenside Avenue. Michael Atherton shot dead his partner Susan McGoldrick, 47, her sister Alison Turnbull, 44, and her niece Tanya Turnbull, 24 before turning the gun on himself. Police said three other people inside the house managed
The Association of Consulting Actuaries (ACA) says that nine out of 10 private sector defined benefit schemes are now closed to new entrants. Police secure the murder scene
to escape. Atherton’s 19year-old stepdaughter Laura McGoldrick jumped to safety from a first-floor window. Atherton was licensed to own six firearms, including the shotgun found next to his body. Police reviewed
these licences after he threatened to kill himself in 2008 but he was allowed to keep the guns. As a result the force has now asked the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) to investigate.
Strong Winds Take Life A man has been killed by a falling a tree in Kent as large parts of England experienced winds of up to 80mph (128km/h). The man, in his 50s, died when the tree fell on the cab of his van which was parked near Tunbridge Wells town centre. And a bus driver suffered severe injuries when an oak tree fell on his vehicle in Witley, Surrey. Severe weather warnings remain in place for several regions in England. The Met Office has
Seismic Collapse
warned strong winds could hit parts of Yorkshire, the North East and North West on Tuesday afternoon and evening. The bus driver in Witley had to be cut free from the single-decker bus and was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting. Police
said the oak tree had a width of 6ft (182cm). Two passengers on board the bus at the time of the incident were unharmed, according to operator Stagecoach. A building was also damaged by the fallen tree.
The ACA wants bold government action to reinvigorate workplace pensions. An automatic enrolment, set to begin later this year, would enable millions of people to save. Defined benefit schemes give members a guaranteed pension, based either on their final salary or their average pay over the length of their career, depending on the scheme.
Verdict in Lawrence Trial Two men have been convicted of the racist murder of London teenager Stephen Lawrence 18 years after the attack. Gary Dobson, 36, and David Norris, 35, were found guilty by an Old Bailey jury yesterday after a trial based on new forensic evidence – a tiny blood stain on Dobson's jacket collar. The two will be sentenced at 11.30 am today, Wednesday.
There are some 23 million workers in the private sector in the UK, and six million in the public sector. The ACA said that while more than five million public sector employees enjoyed "open" defined benefit pension schemes, fewer than two million workers in the private sector do so, and were now in largely "closed" schemes. In December the NAPF found that 23% of pension schemes were now closed to more contributions by
existing staff, and 81% were closed to new joiners. A spokesperson for the Department for Work and Pensions said: "Automatic enrolment is the most radical action taken by any government to help address the question of saving for retirement. It will enable millions of people to save, many for the first time.We will continue to work with industry as we bring this forward as it is in everyone's interest to help people save for their retirement."

Kidnapped Girl Found Murdered A 20 year old woman was found dead after she was abducted from a house in east London where two others had been stabbed. Police said they believe the woman was Kirsty Treloar who was taken from Brownlow Road in Hackney on Monday, shortly after 7am and was found dead in an abandoned car some 90 minutes later.
Ms Treloar, who gave birth to her first child last month, died from stab wounds. Initial investigations suggest a male suspect kidnapped her from home – neighbours said they heard a "hysterical" scream coming from the property and a cry of "Please, please, please" before she was taken away. Her body was later discovered with fatal
stab wounds inside the getaway car – a grey Fiat Stilo – parked in an alleyway just 1.6 miles away at Ryder Mews.

Remains found Irish Cyclist on Royal Estate Missing
Theft from police It has come the light that hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of equipment and personal belongings have been stolen from police stations across Britain. Thefts in the past five years include handcuffs, uniforms, speed guns, dogs, riot shields, and even patrol cars. The eclectic list was revealed as a result of freedom of information requests by the Press association. Greater Manchester Police was the worst hit, with thieves taking a £10,000 patrol car and a £30,000 private vehicle. WaleS
Church robbed Sixteen paving stones thought to be nearly 150 years old have been stolen from outside a Newport church. Gwent Police said the stones were taken early on Friday from St Marks Church in the Gold Tops area of the city. The theft, at the church's tower entrance, has led to the churchyard being closed off due to uneven ground. The stolen stones are valued between £500 and £600, and the remaining stones are likely to be removed.
Police are very concerned about a missing County Antrim cyclist, but are hopeful he is still alive. Samuel Campbell, 49, went out for a bike ride in the Kells area on Sunday afternoon and failed to return.
Sandringham Estate
Police have launched a murder investigation after human remains were discovered in an area of woodland on the Queen’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk. A member of the public is said to have made the discovery at Anmer near King’s Lynn on New Year’sday. The area was sealed off and police and forensic science experts are carrying out a detailed search. The area is about three miles from Sandringham House on the 20,000-acre (8,000 hectare) estate. The incident reported in the

afternoon. Detective Chef Inspector Jes Fry, of Norfolk Constabulary, said "The circumstances suggest this is a murder case and we are looking at missing persons reports and cold cases both locally and nationwide.". However, he was able to confirm that the remains were that of a single person – a woman – and that the body had been there some time. No indication of the age of the remains has been released. Buckingham Palace said it had no comment to make as it was “a matter for Norfolk police”.

Detective Inspector Bob Blemmings, who is leading the search for Mr Campbell, said it would be very unusual for him not to contact his family. Police were following a number of lines of inquiry. Campbell was last seen wearing a red top with the symbol TCG, black cycling leggings and cycle glasses. Detective Blemmings said "We're very concerned about his whereabouts, but at the moment we just don't have enough information.” The detective added that Mr Campbell would often cover about 20 miles on his bike rides so the search for him is covering a wide area, including Kells, Ballymena,

Potholes on roads across Scotland have cost local authorities more than £1.7m, according to new figures. The money was paid out in compensation to drivers whose vehicles had been damaged by roads in poor condition. A recent AA study suggested Scotland has a higher number of potholes per mile than the rest of the UK. Two severe winters left many of the country's roads in a poor state. A spokeswoman for Transport Scotland said: "Local authorities are responsible for local roads in Scotland. The Scottish government provides local authorities with significant levels of funding, and flexibility to allocate these resources to road improvements based on local needs and priorities.” Last January the Scottish government announced an extra £15m for local councils to cover the impact of winter conditions on the country's roads.

Corrupt judge returns to bench
Bin men to strike
The Marbella judge who was suspended for accepting bribes from Juan Antonio Roca, the alleged brain behind the Malaya corruption case, has been allowed to return to the bench. Andalucia's High Court of Justice sentenced Francisco Javier de Urquía (right) in March 2009 to two years in jail and a 17-year-long suspension, but last week the Supreme Court reduced the sentence to 21 months suspension and a fine of
€78,000. Urquía has already been suspended for nearly three years and can now in theory return to the bench. However, his place in the Marbella court has already been filled and Urquía will now have to apply for a job at courts elsewhere if he
wants to continue practising his profession. Then again, he may not be able to do so because there is another case pending against him. If found guilty, he faces two years in jail, another 17-year suspension and a fine of €145,000.

Workers for the GCS private rubbish collection firm in Benalmadena will go on strike on January 5th, 6th and 7th if an agreement cannot be reached between them and management before then. The workers are protesting against the company's decision to cut their wages by 30 per cent, pointing out that the local council – which pays the company – has upped the rubbish collection tax by 300 per cent. They also oppose the company's plan to make them pay traffic fines arising from the fact that many of the collection trucks are not insured or have not passed the ITV.

Crisis not keeping couples together
3,500 kilos of hashish seized Christmas and New Year is a busy time for drug dealers as the season's revellers' demands increase. So it was an equally busy time for the Guardia Civil who in the last days of last year seized more than 3,500 kilos of hashish which dealers were trying to unload along the Costa and in the bay of Algeciras. The last seizure of the year took place at Sabinillas where seven men were arrested as they tried to unload bales containing 1,260 kilos of hashish. The Guardia also arrested the four men, said to be the gang leaders, who were waiting with a van to take the delivery.
When the economic crisis started making itself felt in 2007, many couples decided to stay together – if only in name – to save money. As a result divorce figures for the region started to drop steadily until 2010. Figures released last week by the Statistics Institute of Andalucia show there were 19,899 divorces in 2010, up by 4.2 per cent. This did not include 36 divorces for same sex couples. Divorces in the rest of Spain rose by 3.9 per cent that year. ANDALUCIA

Letter from A Broad Dear News Readers, The last couple of weeks have certainly been hectic here in Melbourne. We arrived the day before the Big 60th Birthday and went to see the sequel to “Phantom Of The Opera” called “Love Never Dies” on the birthday eve. The musical, as with most Lloyd Webber stuff was good and, if you get the chance, do go and see it. Most people said they had assumed that there would be some link to the original – there wasn’t so don’t expect to hear any of the much-loved songs and just enjoy it for what it is, a follow on from the original in its own right. On the actual day of the birthday we were taken out into the countryside for a trip on a steam train called Puffing Billy that huffed and chuffed through the hills and dales until we got to an area with lakes and had a wander around. We then caught the train back and huffed and puffed our way back again looking at stunning views of the Dandenong ranges on the way. The line was originally built as a cheap way of linking the interior new territories opening on 18th December 1900 (so it was 112 years old the day after we went on it!). In 1953 a big landslide cut off part of the track and closed the line. The line was partly reopened by the Puffing Billy
Preservation Society in 1962, a bit more by 1975 and right the way through in October 1998. The evening was a complete surprise and the birthday boy had no idea what was happening until it arrived! Melbourne has a fantastic tram network so we left the cars at home and took the tram into the city. As we were too early, we had a stroll along the Yarra riverbank then waited. Along came a tram that can only be described as a roadbound Orient Express. Organised transport in Melbourne started in 1869 when the Mebourne Omnibus Company was formed. It was replaced by the tram company using cable trams just three years later and this system ran for 55 years. Today, Melbourne has over 155 miles of double track carrying over 500 trams throughout the City of Melbourne. The Colonial
Tramcar Company was formed in 1981 and has won nine Victorian Tourism awards and four National Tourism wards. The tram we found ourselves on was one of the original maroon coloured ones that had been beautifully fitted out as a top class restaurant and you can travel around the city for about two-and-a-half hours while eating Tasmanian ocean trout or kangaroo fillet, followed by a perfectly cooked steak or a grilled chicken fillet, all finished off with a white chocolate and passion fruit parfait or a warm sticky date pudding. The wine flowed constantly and the service was impeccable. Next week I’ll tell you about Sorrento and Healsville Sanctuary…. Where there were Wombats! from Kym Wickham, Down Under

The art of government
Hiding out while Rome burns
G
T
iven his vast experience, I think King Juan Carlos could become a professor of government at any of the world's top universities – as events of the past few weeks have shown.
H
is “anno horribilis” began a few weeks ago with revelations about his son-in-law's financial shenanigans. I know you're innocent until proved guilty, as politicians who like the royal family are quick to point out, but the evidence is mounting and it would seem to be just a question of how far the judges dare to go against a royal by marriage.
T
hings looked bad when it was revealed that the King had told his son-in-law back in 2007 to leave the companies and institutions he was involved with and work abroad for a while. It looked like a royal cover up but when the judge investigating a corruption case in Mallorca started closing in, the Royal Household separated Iñaki Urdangarin, aka the Duke of Palma, from all royal duties just before Christmas for having behaved in a “non-exemplary” way. For the first time ever, Urdangarin, the Infanta Cristina and their four children did not spent Christmas with the royal family in Madrid.
T
hen in his Christmas speech, the King called for honesty and transparency at all official levels, alluding to the “mistrust that seems to be extending itself in some sectors of public opinion as regards the credibility and prestige of some of our institutions”. He said “all of us who have public responsibilities should behave in a correct and exemplary manner”. He also pointedly noted that we are all equal before the law. The Left criticised him for not mentioning Urdangarin by name but opinion polls showed that more than 75% of the Spanish people felt the King was handling the matter in an acceptable way.
A
few days later, King Juan Carlos, accompanied by Queen Sofia, Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia attended the opening of Parliament. When he stood up to make his speech he received a standing ovation from the MPs present – the longest yet at two minutes. The Catalan Republican Left (ERC) and the Basque pro-
independence coalition Amaiur were conspicuous by their absence, while a handful of Socialists, the Izquierda Unida (IU; United Left) and a few other nationalist nonentities stood during the ovation but didn't clap. I was saddened to see the UP&D led by Rosa Diez were among them, but she had second thoughts and joined in the ovation for the last few seconds.
I
hope she's not going to join the antimonarchist mob who are totally out of touch with “the people” they claim to represent – as opinion polls consistently indicate. Her initial silence was even harder to understand because she had seemed to approve of the King's Christmas speech. Once again, an opinion poll taken immediately after the ceremony in Parliament showed that a majority still support the King and feel his son is worthy to take over the monarchy in due course.
M
eanwhile, the BBC reported that the PP government's cuts announced last Friday had “sparked a number of large protests across the country”. I wonder which country they were talking about – people here were far too busy seeing in the New Year!
I
confess to being an avid reader of opinion polls and the most recent ones seem to indicate that “the people” are becoming much more politically mature. According to one, most Spaniards believe the austerity measures are necessary. They also believe that the next two years are going to be tough and that things won't start to get better until 2014. Despite such a gloomy outlook, people seem prepared to give Rajoy time “to get it together” and generally approve of his choice of ministers.
O
ne of them, Economy minister Luis de Guindos, surprised everyone last week when he said Spain was already in recession. But one political observer commented: “At least he's being honest.” If the rest of Rajoy's ministers follow his example, they may be able to nip many of those “large protests” in the bud. It will also come as a welcome relief after the past eight years of cock-eyed optimism and downright lying.
he new Popular Party (PP) government has given us a full New Year’s package of goodies. Don’t you believe that Mariano Rajoy and his team knew way before the November 20th elections that they would have to raise taxes to get Spain’s finances back into shape? This was the important ingredient in the recipe dictated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel when she spoke to Rajoy on several occasions before his victory. The worst thing is the PP leader, now prime minister, continued to insist that he would not raise taxes. He even criticised former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in September for introducing a wealth tax for the next two years to rake in some extra revenue from Spain’s most fortuitous families. Reaffirming that this wasn’t the time to give Spaniards an added blow to their pocketbooks, Rajoy insisted on abolishing the wealth tax once he got to Moncloa. Good pre-election campaign propaganda and voters apparently fell for it. It was George Herbert Walker Bush’s “read my lips” all over again.
W
hen announcing the tax hikes last Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría pretended to be extremely apologetic. “This is an exceptional move that we didn't foresee,” Sáenz said at a news conference following the Cabinet meeting. “We had to resort to this because the previous government did not comply with its goal in reducing the deficit.” In other words, the Socialist administration was far off target when it predicted that the nation’s deficit would be 6 per cent of GDP by the end of 2011, when Spain actually closed the year with a deficit surmounting 8 per cent. Again, this could have been no surprise to the PP. Rajoy’s party was swept into power across the regions following May‘s local elections. Officials had six months to go over the books to determine that regional finances – the gist of Spain’s economic blunders – were in dire straits. Rajoy immediately called his new regional premiers to an emergency meeting where he told them he would not tolerate any more runaway spending.
S
o now Spaniards are having to pay the piper. The tax hikes, which go into effect next month, range from 0.75 percent for the lowest incomes, to 7 per cent for those who make €300,000 annually. In other words, Finance Minister Cristóbal Montero explained that a single
Soraya Sáenz de Santamaria
person without children with a salary of €9,500 annually won’t have to pay a cent. Those who make more than €12,000 will see a reduction of an extra €20 per year. Spaniards earning between €16,000 and €20,000 will have to fork over an additional €82 annually.
T
his Thursday the Cabinet is expected to announce more measures, and Economy Minister Luis De Guindos hasn’t ruled out any hike in the value added tax (VAT) in March. Even though we are paying 18 per cent – raised two percentage points by the Socialists last year – it is still one of the lowest by European standards. In all, Rajoy wants to make some €8.9 billion in budget spending cuts with the hope of bringing down the deficit to 4.4 per cent of GDP by the end of 2012 as part of his pledge to the European Commission. His goal seems unrealistic but maybe not impossible seeing that those who are going to suffer the most are taxpayers and citizens who are in badly need of social service aid.
T
hroughout all this economic shock therapy, Rajoy hasn’t been seen in public. He didn’t show his face during Friday’s painful announcements allowing instead his deputy prime minister to give the bad news. PP sources have said that the prime minister is waiting for the final tweaks to be put in place on all his measures before submitting himself to the opposition’s demand to appear before Parliament to explain what he did, why he did it and, of course, why he kept his plans under wraps during the election race. Here we have a new prime minister who for more than eight years could not wait to get to Moncloa, Now that his political dream came true, he is hidden away somewhere while Rome begins to burn; apparently afraid to face those voters who trusted him and the rest of the Spaniards who are demanding answers for his irreverent economic policies.

CHAIN Goat Named The Name the Goat competition closed on the 23rd December. The winner was Tina from Alora who named the goat Matilda. Temporarily named Billie, she was rescued after falling down an uncovered service manhole. Unfortunately, she broke her hind leg during the fall and had to have it pinned. Any money raised will go towards the goat's treatment and hopefully, the pins in her leg will be removed in the new year.
Lee Berrill qualified as a NAFAS Area Demonstrator in 1987 and is a member of North Hykeham Flower Club. He particularly enjoys the challenge of competitive work and has been successful with exhibits at national, area and county shows, taking Best in Show and Most Innovative Exhibit at the 2009 North Midlands Area floral art competitions. He will also be representing his area in the national show next year. Lee’s demonstrations include many aspects of contemporary and traditional floral design, showcasing his floristry and flower arranging skills. On Thursday 19th January from 10.30am there will be something a little different – a jewellerymaking workshop run by Pamela Morgan, who donates the proceeds of
her work to a charity in Africa. This workshop and the floral demonstration are open to everyone to attend on payment of a small entrance fee and will take place at The Oak, Urb. Benamara, Estepona. DAVID THE DOGMAN: New pet travel rules now in force As from 1st January 2012 all pet dogs, cats and ferrets (including guide and hearing dogs) can enter or re-enter the UK from any country in the world without quarantine provided they meet the rules of the scheme, which will be different depending on the country or territory the pet is coming from. There are no problems for EU countries like Spain. This is a welcome change from the complex and timeconsuming formalities previously in force. Now pet cats and dogs travelling to the UK can undergo the necessary pre-entry treatment (e.g microchipping, vaccination and blood testing as required) either before they travel in the country of origin, or if they enter quarantine in the
UK, whilst they are in quarantine.
What you need to do if you are entering the UK from the EU Preparing your dog, cat or ferret • Step 1 – Have your pet microchipped – Before any of the other procedures for pet travel are carried out, your pet must be fitted with a microchip so it can be properly identified. • Step 2 – Have your pet vaccinated– After the microchip has been fitted your pet must be vaccinated against rabies. There is no exemption to this requirement, even if your pet has a current rabies vaccination. Rabies boosters must be kept up to date. The length of the waiting period before
entry to the UK is 21 days after the first vaccination date. A waiting period is not required for subsequent entries into the UK, provided rabies boosters are kept up to date. If the vaccination is in two parts the 21 day wait will be from the date of the second vaccination. • Step 3 – Get pet travel documentation – For animals being prepared in an EU country, you should get an EU pet passport. If you are preparing your animal in a non-EU listed country or territory you will need to obtain an official third country veterinary certificate although note that Croatia, Gibraltar, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland are also issuing passports. • Step 4 – Tapeworm treatment – (dogs only): before
entering the UK, all pet dogs (including assistance dogs) must be treated for tapeworm. The treatment must be administered by a vet not less than 24 hours and not more than 120 hours (1-5 days) before its scheduled arrival time in the UK. • There is no mandatory requirement for tick treatment. • Step 5 – Arrange for your animal to travel with an approved transport company on an authorised route – Your pet must enter the UK from a listed country or territory travelling with an approved transport company on an authorised route.

Felices Fiestas! One of the great things about living in Spain is the wonderful long winter break. We start off with Feliz Navidad - Merry Christmas. Then, a few days later it changes to Feliz Año Nuevo - Happy New Year. Remember Nochebuena is Christmas Eve and Nochevieja is New Year's Eve Just when you think it might be time to get back to normal is when the Spanish children are getting excited about the anticipated visit from Los Reyes - The Kings. Of course, 6th January is traditionally remembered as the day the Three Wise Men visited the Baby Jesus with their gifts so this is why it is when the Spanish children have traditionally had their regalitos (little gifts).

Any town or village worth its salt will have a procession - cabalgata through the streets on the evening of 5th January with three men dressed up as Caspar, Balthazar and Melchior on floats hurling sweets caramelos - into the crowds which line the streets. 6th January is a national holiday and people tend to eat a cake called Roscón de los reyes - Kings' cake. It is a round, flattish cake with a hole in the centre. A figurine is hidden in the centre and whoever finds the figurine in their piece of cake gets to wear the crown which comes with the cake. Only then is it finally time to get back to normality. No wonder we all love living here! Hasta Proximo Valerie Valerie runs the Centro Idiomas Language School in Coin. ust when most people in the UK are winding down from the festivities of Christmas and New Year, here in Spain excitement is mounting yet again because January 6th is la fiesta de los Reyes. The Kings are, of course, the Three Wise Men from the East and they come bearing presents, just like Santa Claus. They don't slip secretively down the chimney (though they can be seen climbing up ladders), they take part in a colourful and noisy procession in every town and village. And they arrive in a variety of transport – no ships of the desert for the Malaga Kings, they come into the port from the sea, while the Fuengirola Kings descend by helicopter.
T
he Grandiosa Cabalgata de Sus Majestades, los Reyes Magos de Oriente takes place on the eve of Epiphany, January 5th when three specially chosen townsfolk dress up in splendid robes as Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar (the first two with flowing white beards, the third with a black face). Special floats carry the Kings and as they pass by they throw sweets for the hundreds of excited children lining the streets (be prepared to duck, a flying boiled sweet can hurt!) who scurry around with plastic bags for their booty.
Town Hall, taking in most of the main streets and finishing in the same place, after which the Kings will make an offering on the steps of the Cathedral and there will be a concert.

The week of prayer for Christian unity is celebrated every year from the 18th to the 25th January all over the world. This is the time when churches pray together to look for unity amongst them, following Jesus’ commandment "that they may all be one". Coin was in for a treat this Christmas, as Lucky and Bullet got all glitsed up and took the town by storm. At lunchtime on Christmas day Harold’s well known horse Lucky and his new stablemate Bullet ridden by Harold’s wife Jackie – dressed up as Mrs Santa – made an appearance. Both horses were dressed up with lots of Xmas glitter, antlers, jingle bells, working fairy lights
and Lucky sporting a red nose. The first port of call was Sierra Gorda Bistro where many photos were taken by customers and passers by, then on the main road to JK's with lots of cheering and waving from passing traffic and another photo session at JK's. Here they are in all their Christmas finery, outside JK's.

ormally around the New Year period I end up watching “Four Rooms”, because it is set on New Year’s Eve and it’s filled with strange and entertaining stories. Sadly enough, when this movie was released back in 1995, it wasn’t as successful as hoped and was pretty much ignored – which is a shame, because it’s a great little movie.
Director: Cameron Crowe Starring: Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Thomas Haden Church We Bought a Zoo is a 2011 comedy-drama film based on a memoir by Benjamin Mee. The film is directed by Cameron Crowe, and it stars actor Matt Damon as the lead character Benjamin Mee.
backyard; at first reluctant to take on the zoo with its animals, he decides to give it a try. Although his young daughter, 7-year-old Rosie is happy with the animals, Dylan is unhappy and retreats into his art work.
Mee is recently widowed, and his 14-year-old son, Dylan, is expelled from school. Benjamin decides to begin again in new surroundings, wanting to get away from the sad reminders of his deceased wife. He finally buys a large house with a zoo in the
Benjamin then meets the staff of the zoo, headed by the attractive Kelly Foster (Scarlett Johansson). They must conform to stringent requirements in order to open in the summer, and proceed to work together closely to upgrade the zoo's facilities.
The movie has received a mixed reception from film critics, but one redeeming feature is the soundtrack, with a variety of artists from Echo & The Bunnymen, to Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Petty and Randy Newman. None of these artists appear on the CD of the soundtrack though. Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson, the lead singer of the band Sigur Rós composed the music score for the movie and his song (Gathering Stories)is on the shortlist of nominations for Best Original Song at the 84th Academy Awards.
“
Four Rooms” is about Ted the Bellboy (Tim Roth), who has been left on his own to run the hotel on New Year’s Eve and how he copes with four very demanding rooms.

sometimes be painful to listen to because we know that Joni Mitchell is baring her soul in the songs. No one who listens to this will ever forget its strong melodies and haunting lyrics. This is a stunningly raw and agonisingly beautiful, utterly coherent and undeniably lyrical piece of work. Every song on “Blue”

resignation. The melancholic mood throughout is evoked by Joni's plaintive singing, accompanied sometimes by only the piano or hushed drumming of the acoustic guitar. California is simply a love song about the state, very cute and catchy. My favourites in this collection are River and The Last Time I Saw Richard. The thing about this album is that no woman should be without it, it’s like an emotional guide book for women, no matter what you’re going through – it will make you feel better. Just draw the curtains dim the light pour a glass of wine and turn the stereo up!
he first story, written and directed by Allison Anders, is “The Missing Ingredient” starring Madonna and Lily Taylor, who meet up with the rest of their coven to try and bring back their goddess who was turned to stone. However, one of the witches didn’t bring her ingredient and needs Ted to help her out.

he second story “The Wrong Man” was written and directed by Alexandre Rockwell. At the beginning of this story there is a quirky cameo by Tarantino’s producer Lawrence Bender, who also appears a little later in the story saying “Ice”. “The Wrong Man” isn’t one of my favourite stories, but it is very unusual as Ted gets stuck with a crazed couple. The problem here lies with two things – the fact that the comedic timing/chemistry is a little iffy/off with the three actors, and that the writing doesn't come off like it's naturally funny. Some of the tension from Roth brings a few laughs, but not enough to compensate for the uncomfortable atmosphere around the whole segment.

W
hich brings us to the last story “The Man From Hollywood”. I think it's safe to say that Quentin Tarantino never disappoints as a director or screenwriter, and this story is no exception. Tarantino takes on two sources of inspiration – Roald Dahl's "Man from the South" short story, and a later translation through Alfred Hitchcock's television show. Tarantino plays the charming and lovable film-maker Chester Rush who makes a bet with his friend. Bruce Willis is one of the witnesses and Jennifer Beals (she was in “The Wrong Man) re-appears. Chester’s friend claims he can light his cigarette lighter ten times in a row to win Chester’s car, however if he doesn’t succeed Chester wins his pinkie finger. Chester needs someone to be the dice man and to save Chester being traumatised by cutting his friend’s finger off, should he win, he asks Ted to do it for $1.000. So, will Ted accept $1.000 for one minute’s worth of work?
T
im Roth does a wonderful job in this movie, he practically carries the whole film. He retains his goodnatured lovability the entire time and he'll have you rooting for him to the very end.

Bring to a simmer and stir in the sugar. Continue to simmer, lid off for about 20 minutes until the sauce becomes reduced and syrupy. While the sauce is simmering, score each duck breast in a criss-cross pattern on the skin side with a sharp knife. Then season with a little salt and pepper. FOOTNOTE The flames may get quite high when flambeing, so pay attention to anything flammable above and around where you ignite the cherries. When the initial large flame has died down, a small blue flame will continue to burn for several seconds. Shake or stir the cherries gently to expose more alcohol to the flame, being careful that they do not burn. The goal is to have the small, blue flame burn for as long as possible, thereby reducing the raw alcohol flavor, caramelizing the sugars, and entertaining your guests!

SO WHO WILL REPLACE HER ON THE JUDGES’ PANEL IN THE NEXT SERIES?
Bye Bye Strictly - Hello Britain’s Got Talent! .....shock anouncement from Dixon, as she has decided to leave the show this year Alesha Dixon is to leave BBC One's hit programme Strictly Come Dancing to join ITV1 talent show Britain's Got Talent. Dixon announced she will join Simon Cowell's team for the programme's sixth series later this year. The 33-year-old will appear alongside the show's creator Cowell, comic David Walliams and Amanda Holden on the Britain's Got Talent judging panel. A BBC spokesperson said "We wish her well for the future". A new
Strictly judge will be announced in due course. Walliams is also a newcomer on Britain's Got Talent. He and Dixon replace comedian Michael McIntyre and actor David Hasselhoff from series five. In a message on her website, Dixon, who won Strictly in 2007, said: "After three incredible years on the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel, I have decided that it is time to move on.” Dixon, who was a member of girl group Mis-Teeq, received a backlash after it was announced in 2009 that
she would replace Arlene Phillips on the Strictly judging panel. Following Dixon's announcement she was joining the Britain's Got Talent panel, a host of female stars have been tipped to replace her. And leading the favourites are 2010 winner Kara Tointon, 28, and the show's former professional Karen Hardy, 41. Former EastEnders actress Tointon, who won the show with her boyfriend Artem Chigvintsev in 2010, is favourite with bookmakers
Ladbrokes to be appointed to the panel. However, William Hill have retired ballroom dancer Hardy, as 4/6 favourite. With Bruno Tonioli, Len Goodman and Craig Revel-Horwood remaining on the panel, there is a fourth place left for a lone female judge. Other names in the fray include last year's contestant Chelsee Healey, Polish professional Ola Jordan and Dirty Dancing actress Jennifer Grey – who was a guest judge last year and won Dancing With The Stars in the U.S.

“Darth Vader” Dies
Aretha Franklin Engaged
Former Olympic fencer Bob Anderson, who staged fights in Star Wars films and From Russia With Love, has died at the age of 89.
Aretha Franklin has become engaged to her long-term friend William "Willie" Wilkerson. The 69year-old soul legend and Grammy award-winner said she was hoping to marry over the summer.
Anderson fought light sabre battles as Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, two of the original Star Wars films. In the non-fight scenes, Vader was played by David Prowse and voiced by James Earl Jones. The
British Academy of Fencing confirmed Anderson died on 1st January. It was Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars trilogy, who revealed Anderson was behind the fight scenes in a 1983 interview with Starlog magazine. Diet can stop brain shrinking
Detoxing in January is futile Giving up alcohol or going on a detox for one month is pointless, especially after the excesses of the festive season, the British Liver Trust has said. Its chief executive, Andrew Langford, said that people tend to believe the hype about rejuvenating their liver by detoxing in January: "People think they're virtuous with their health by embarking on a liver detox each January with the belief that they are cleansing their liver of excess following the festive break but a one-hit, one-
month attempt to achieve long-term liver health is not the way to approach it.” He said they would be better off making a resolution to take a few days off alcohol a week throughout the entire year than abstaining for January only. The thinking behind this approach is that total alcohol intake per person is kept down
and the liver is given time to recover each week. Providing the liver has no lasting damage, it can repair itself very quickly, taking as little as 24 hours to go back to normal. The Trust is launching a campaign called “Love your liver” to encourage people to maintain a healthy liver. As part of the
A pill to cure hangovers
campaign, it also advises eating well and exercising regularly. On its website, it says if you are overweight you increase your risk of liver disease by three times if you drink alcohol too. It also advises cutting down on daily food indulgences and not overloading your body on sugary drinks to help to optimise liver function.
A diet rich in vitamins and fish may protect the brain from ageing while junk food has the opposite effect, the latest US study suggests. Researchers, from Oregon Health and Science University, Portland; Portland VA Medical Center; and Oregon State University, Corvallis, analysed blood samples from 104 healthy people with an average age of 87 who had few known risk factors for Alzheimer's. They found those who had more vitamin B, C, D and E in their blood performed better in tests of memory and thinking skills. People with high levels of omega 3 fatty acids – found mainly in fish – also had high scores. The poorest scores were found in people who had more trans fats in their blood. Trans fats are common in processed foods, including cakes, biscuits and fried foods. They then carried out brain
scans on 42 of the participants and found that those with high levels of vitamins and omega 3 in their blood were more likely to have a large brain volume; while those with high levels of trans fat had a smaller total brain volume. A spokesman for Alzheimer's Research UK said the best current advice is to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, not smoke, take regular exercise and keep and blood pressure cholesterol in check. The charity has called for more work into diet and dementia risk.

The creators of tablets called Blowfish claim that they can cure hangover symptoms. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has allowed them to be sold as an over-the-counter drug but doctors warn that the pills should not be seen as a licence to overdo the drinking. A spokesman for Rally Labs, the company which created Blowfish, said it had investigated the causes and effects of hangovers, experimenting with different combinations of
ingredients on the staff and their friends. The "cure" does not contain secret ingredients mixed in a complicated formula – it is basically a blend of high doses of aspirin and caffeine packed in effervescent tablets that dissolve in water, to drink in the morning. The two ingredients work together to fight fatigue and pain, two main complaints of hangover sufferers. It also contains a little something sweet to help the medicine
go down. Blowfish is not the first treatment aimed at hangover sufferers. A spokesman for the Addiction Medicine at the American Academy of Family Physicians said that every year there is a new product out that claims to be the cure against hangovers, adding that "Blowfish is simply this year's thing". He said that not getting drunk is the best and only real cure for hangovers.

David Earnshaw, Benalmadena As a regular customer of The Mooring, I have always been more than happy with the food there, and I go because it is quite unmistakably homemade. Having lived on this coast for over 20 years I have seen many bars come and go and understand how difficult it must be for the owners. If ever I was not happy with a bar, I simply did not return ... one man’s meat .. as they say.
I find it incomprehensible that someone could be so mean spirited as to try to cause a vendetta against a business as such. Bars work so hard through the summer seasons and bravely struggle through the winters, I don´t understand why someone would want to destroy what good people have sunk their life savings and dreams into. These cheery places always provide you with a
Costa Del Gospel, Mijas Costa After noting your information regarding Christmas bank holidays in Gibraltar in issue 155, we decided to make the journey with elderly relatives and to visit our bank on Tuesday 27th December. Only to find that it was a BANK holiday and every business, apart from one small café and one pub, was closed!
A wasted journey costing precious money and resulting in two disgruntled OAPs thanks to misinformation. Editor s response: We are very sorry for the inconvenience this caused you. As Christmas day fell on a Sunday, Gibraltar took the 27th in lieu of Christmas day,
Brian Cave, France This is an open letter to David Lipsey: Our verbal exchange on Tuesday 27th December 2011 on Radio 4 has engendered a good deal of response. A note on the expatriates and British economy. You made very strongly the point that 'representation' is linked to the economy and taxation It is not, I may add, a view shared by the Civil Service: 1. This last year I and my wife have purchased from or within the UK electric fencing, a microwave cooker, trousers for myself and my wife, a pullover, books, a considerable number of presents for family and friends. In the previous year – two sofas amongst other minor stuff. British VAT is paid on these purchases. 2. The majority of expats have British bank accounts. Yet I observe it is almost impossible to open a new account of any kind in the UK if you are an expatriate. 3. Many have property in the UK and pay local property taxes in the UK. 4. Probably some 250,000 expatriate pensioners pay all or much of their income tax to the British Government exmilitary/police/teachers/etc. 5. Over one million, three
hundred thousand pensioners receive State Pensions from the British Government. 6. Great numbers have savings/investments in the UK. Great numbers receive private pensions from the UK. 7. Many who have overseas jobs have children at school in the UK and pay school fees there. I would also observe that many people in Britain who are foreign nationals, pay British income tax, VAT, Council tax etc. but have no representation in the British parliament. Moreover a large number of others pay no income tax (those on lower incomes for example) but are represented in parliament. Thus it is that the link between economy and representation is historically weak – though many claim, as you yourself claim, that it should be strong. And indeed its failure, as it is often remarked, led to the independence of the USA. The link between the national government and the people of the nation should surely be strong and two-way. The national government is the servant of the people, not the other way about. If it is not, then we have a form of dictatorship!
By email cold beer on a hot day and a hot snack on a cold night, and should be applauded for their tireless goodwill. I wish all the bars on the coast a big thank you and a successful 2012. Editor s response: The News agrees wholeheartedly with your sentiment, and wishes all bar owners a successful 2012!
By email which is an usual occurrence and an oversight on our behalf. However, the Gibraltar government recommends that visitors contact them first before planning any trip, as holidays in Gibraltar can be subject to arbitrary changes by local authorities at the the last minute.
By email Most expatriates do not want to be a burden on the British State but they should have appropriate representation – someone who understands their needs as British citizens in a foreign land, and as citizens subject to British laws, and that when matters which affect them or are of interest to them as British nationals, are discussed, that their views are considered and they can in some manner be consulted – this is called 'democracy'. For this reason I have composed a ‘discussion paper’ which I attach for your consideration. We expatriates are part of the British nation and need to be respected at home.

Orion, the Hunter Probably the most easily recognised constellation in the winter sky has got to be Orion the Hunter.
O
rion dominates the southern part of the sky with his distinct ‘butterfly’ or ‘bow tie’ shape. Look toward the east and you will see him rising at around 8.00pm. He appears to rise lying on his side but during the night as he gets higher in the sky he begins to stand upright in the south.
T
he three stars in a line that make up Orion’s belt, the bright red star Betelgeuse that marks his right shoulder, Bellatrix marks his left shoulder, the dazzling white star Rigel is his left foot and the slightly fainter Saith marks the position of his right foot. The full constellation shows Orion holding a club above his head in his right hand and a shield held out in front in his left hand fighting off Taurus the Bull which is bearing down on him.
I
n history, Orion was a great hunter who boasted that he could kill any creature in the forest. This angered the gods who sent a scorpion to kill Orion. The scorpion stung Orion in the foot and killed him instantly. Both Orion and Scorpio were placed in the sky but at opposite ends so they are never in the sky together. Orion is only visible during the winter and Scorpio during the summer months.
T
he constellation of Orion is filled with interesting objects. The star Betelgeuse is a red giant star about 430 light years away. It is huge, almost 700 times bigger than the sun. It is a very old star close to the end of its life. It is predicted that Betelgeuse will explode into a supernova any day now. In fact it may already have exploded and as it takes 430 years for the light to travel from Betelgeuse we may be simply waiting to see it. If and when it does explode it will make a spectacular sight in the sky and could even become visible for a short time during daylight.
C 952 443 222 see our ad on the back page
ompare the red colour of Betelgeuse to the blue/white colour of Rigel. Rigel is a quite youngish star at over 776 light years away. The light you are seeing left Rigel in the year 1235 and has been travelling through space all this time. Rigel is almost 100 times bigger than the sun and the intense blue white colour tells us a great deal about the temperature of the star. It is much hotter than our sun.
A
lthough the three stars of Orion’s belt look to be similar and very close together, they are really very different and at vastly different distances from the earth. The middle star of the belt for example is 1359 light years away, the light left that star in the year 652 A.D!
B
ut the most interesting object in Orion can be found just below his belt where his sword would be. Look very carefully at the middle star of three marking his sword and you will see that it has a slightly fuzzy appearance. This is M42 the famous Orion nebula. The Orion nebula is a vast gas cloud where new stars are being born. Even a small pair of binoculars will help you to see the gases of the nebula. The mainly hydrogen gas is slowly condensing under gravity and as it forms clumps these attract more gas which eventually becomes big enough to form a star. Over millions of years the Orion nebula will eventually vanish and a cluster of stars will take its place.
B
y using Orion as a signpost you will be able to find other stars and constellations near by. Follow the three stars of Orion’s belt down to the left and you will find Sirius, the brightest star in the whole sky. Sirius also happens to be one of the closest stars to Earth at just over eight light years away. If you follow the line of Orion’s belt up to the right it leads to a bright red star called Aldebaran which marks the red eye of Taurus the Bull with its two horns making a V shape off to the left.

Clarkson accused of racism again Jeremy Clarkson has once again been accused of racism after mocking Indian culture in a Top Gear Christmas Special. At one point, the controversial presenter ridiculed the unhygienic conditions and lack of sanitation among the poor by driving around the slums in a Jaguar fitted with a toilet. Showing off the car's convenience, he boasted: 'This is perfect for India because everyone who comes here gets the trots.'

Below is a follow up to the story we published in Issue 154 with regard to the toll fees on the A-22 motorway. A recent article in another publication suggested the Portuguese government were intending to introduce “a massive new toll of 77 euros … for travellers taking the A-22 motorway across the border” from Spain into Portugal. The truth is, thankfully, somewhat less scary. Tolls were indeed introduced on 8th December but they are not anything like as high as suggested and they do not cover the bridge across from Spain. In fact, the tolls do not start until after the first exit from the A22, so motorists will have the choice of taking other roads if they wish. Also the level of the tolls is far less than reported and for a private car it will actually cost 7.3 cents plus tax per kilometre – that is about 12 euros to travel from the Spanish border right over to Lagos on the Atlantic coast. Higher charges will be levied for goods vehicles but the highest of these would only be about 30 euros for the same journey. Predictably, however, all is not quite straightforward because – oddly – there are no manned toll booths on the A22 to take the money. Portuguese residents will have to apply for an electronic “Via Verde” device which goes in their car and registers when they drive under the gantries.
Occasional visitors will therefore have to find another way of paying, or be faced with large fines. There are a number of ways for foreign residents to do this though and the easiest will probably be to buy a pass at the border crossing – although there will probably be long queues at the height of summer. Tickets can also be purchased on line at the CTT (Post Office) web site. Regular visitors can rent an electronic device from the post office or dedicated service stations, or buy one from a Via Verde shop or online. Full details of payment arrangements can be seen in English, French and Spanish at the Estradas web site at http://www.estradas.pt/po rtagensestrangeiros Needless to say, the introduction of the system has met with problems, including computer glitches and resistance from residents which have led to one toll gantry being vandalised and an employee of the agency that maintains the motorway being injured when his car was shot at! Car rental companies are also having problems and about 2,000 fines for non payment have been issued already! Report By: Bob Livermore
Hayden was training at a private indoor flat track facility, and riding a motorcycle for the first time since breaking his scaphoid at the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix on November 6th. The 2006 MotoGP champion underwent an Xray and scan, and he has since undergone an MRI. At the moment though, there are no plans for surgery, but Hayden will have the scapula reassessed next week by Dr. Arthur Ting in Fremont, California, to see how the fracture is progressing. The next few weeks will determine whether Hayden will take part in the first winter test session of 2012, which will begin on January 31st in Sepang, Malaysia. "Obviously, injuries are never good," Hayden said, "but it's part of motorcycle racing. Just like at Valencia, it was kind of a freak accident. I was starting to train again, like I normally do during the winter, at a private track near my house. "I came up behind another rider, and he went to move out of the way. I wasn't going that fast, but he

clipped my front wheel and I went down and landed pretty hard on my left shoulder, and that was it. "It's disappointing, but there's nothing to do about it but heal quickly. Anyway, this doesn't change my expectations for 2012 which, fortunately, is just around the corner." Hayden, the last champion of the 990cc era, finished eighth in the 2011 world championship. 2012 will be the first year of the new 1000cc rules and Hayden's fourth season at the factory Ducati team. He will again ride alongside seven time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi.

Machdar Motorsports has officially launched the much anticipated i1 Supercar Series at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi by unveiling an impressive list of drivers who will participate in the series. Drivers in the inaugural i1 Supercar Series will include 1997 Formula One Champion Jacques Villeneuve, 2011 Formula One drivers Vitantonio Liuzzi and Karun Chandhok, and former F1 race winners Giancarlo Fisichella, HeinzHarald Frentzen and Jean Alesi. Apart from the international drivers, the Indian drivers include Armaan Ebrahim, Aditya Patel and Parthiva Sureswaren. A visibly excited Darshan M, CEO, i1 Super Series said: “This is a big moment for us as we confirm our drivers and calendar for the inaugural season. As promised we have a fantastic line-up of proven international race winners mixed with young Indian drivers. The drivers will have their first taste of the Radical SR3 tomorrow so we will work closely with them to make the car even better. We are also proud to announce
that we will have two women on the grid, who will comprise one team. With the first race being confirmed for January 22nd in Malaysia the countdown starts now.” There will be a driver pool of 27 drivers with 18 drivers being chosen for each race weekend. The drivers for each race weekend will be chosen by the teams themselves. Bowls:Federation Christmas Hamper Following the success of this “Fun Day” over the last five years, the format remained unchanged. Each team, resplendent in red and white, drew a scorecard on arrival to determine their opponents for the four games. Two points were awarded for a win and 1 point for a draw. With 14 well-balanced triples competing, competition was tough from the outset and there was only one team with maximum points after the opening two games, that of Geoff Edginton, Maureen Robertshaw and Lynn Heseltine. A heavy defeat to John
The proud winners
Carr’s team in their third game brought Geoff, Norma and Alan into the pack to set up an intriguing set of final games with six teams in contention for the hamper prizes. In the “driving seat” was Malcolm Greenwood having secured an impressive draw in his second game by picking up three shots on the last end. The draw pitched them against Neil Stanton’s team in a “winner takes all” encounter which Malcolm, Dennis and Wendy won 14-4, winning five of the eight ends. So, with first place decided, the fight was on for 2nd and 3rd and it was tight. John Carr’s team continued to make steady progress and won six ends in their 12-6 win over Barry Pemberton’s triple whilst Kate Morris had a convincing 11-3 victory over Alan Turner, Rena Beveridge and Susan
16-Year-Old American Slalom star
Walker. It was, ultimately, the number of ends won which gave John, Claire and Mike second place ( no favouritism for the Province’s National Delegate ) with Kate, Norma and Alan in third. Competition for the “booby prize” was also fierce and, despite having won one game, there were three teams in contention. A strong performance in their final game, where they won four ends, was not sufficient to prevent Pat Fisher, John Morgan and Ilona Ott from taking home the “bubbly”!

Diego Maradona fined for abusing rival coach Diego Maradona was fined 9,000 dirham (around £1,600) last Thursday by the United Arab Emirates Football Association for verbally abusing a rival coach. Maradona, who coaches UAE club Al Wasl, has been feuding with Al Ain coach Cosmin Olaroiu since losing an ill-tempered match last month. The 1986 World Cupwinning Argentine complained that Olaroiu and his staff celebrated the winning goal in an unprofessional manner. He later called Olaroiu rude and impolite and suggested it was the club's players, not Olaroiu, who deserved credit for its early season success. Olaroiu, a Romanian in his
first year at Al Ain, told reporters that Maradona's criticisms came from someone "who doesn't have a clear mind," a reference to the Argentine's history of drug and alcohol abuse. Olaroiu was not sanctioned over the comments because Al Wasl hasn't filed a complaint.

Since arriving in Dubai, Maradona has repeatedly criticized referees he claims were biased against his club.He also kicked a fan for intruding on a photo shoot he was trying to take with a banner of support from his grandson. OnWednesday, the 50-year-old Maradona defended his criticism of referees, and said they could benefit from his vast experience. "I only say what I feel," Maradona said at a news conference. "In the future, they will realise what I said was right. I have 35 years in the industry and that has made me realise certain things."
Teenager Mikaela Shiffrin used to watch skiers Marlies Schild and Lindsey Vonn on television when she was a kid. On Thursday, the 16year-old high school student was standing alongside Schild on a World Cup slalom podium, leaving U.S. teammate Vonn more than a second and a half behind. Shiffrin skied a stunning second run to finish third in a race won by her Austrian idol, becoming the youngest female racer to make the podium in a slalom since American Tamara McKinney in 1978. "I have been working so hard for this moment," said the teen from Vail, Colorado.
"Schild, Zettel, Hosp, Vonn; I have been watching all these top girls for the past 10 years. And now I am here myself, it really feels crazy." Shiffrin started her eighth World Cup event as No. 40 and ended the opening run in 12th position before posting the fastest time of
the second leg. She finished 1.30 behind Schild, who lost 0.24 to Shiffrin on the second run. Tina Maze of Slovenia was second. Vonn finished 18th and retained the lead in the overall World Cup standings on a memorable day for her American teammate.

"It is such a huge honour to receive an MBE and it's fantastic to be recognised for the hard work I have put into taekwondo for the past 21 years," she said. "I know my parents would have
been so proud of this award." Ex-Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis is made a knight, while former cricket umpire Dickie Bird is appointed an OBE. Former Formula 1 champion Nigel Mansell also becomes a CBE for services to young people as President of UK Youth, and veteran BBC broadcaster Stuart Hall receives an OBE, while England rugby league captain and Grand Finalwinning Leeds Rhinos prop forward Jamie Peacock becomes an MBE. Johnson vents his anger live on TV Bradley Johnson used the World Darts Championships at Alexandra Palace to hit back at QPR Joey Barton. The former Newcastle midfielder apparently head-butted Johnson and was shown a straight red card during his side's 2-1 defeat at Loftus Road on Monday. And Johnson, who watched Adrian Lewis beat Andy Hamilton with several Canaries team-mates, made his feelings known live on TV.

Aussies take control and Tendulkar still waits Captain Michael Clarke and former skipper Ricky Ponting left Australia in a strong position on day one of the second Test against India in Sydney. The tourists were bowled out for 191 after winning the toss, with Sachin Tendulkar – still one short of his 100th international century – making 41. Seamer Zaheer Khan (326) then removed the Aussie top three cheaply. But Ponting (44 not out) and Clarke (47 not out) added 79 for the fourth wicket as they reached 116-3 by the close.
Ablett began his career at Liverpool, before moving to the blue half of Merseyside in 1992. He made over 100 appearances for each club, and is the only man to win the FA Cup with both. He subsequently spent

Gary Ablett, the only player to win the FA Cup with both Liverpool and Everton, has died at the age of 46 following a battle against non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
The build-up to the 100th Test to be staged at the Sydney Cricket Ground was dominated by talk of Tendulkar's landmark, which has been on the cards since his 99th ton at the World Cup in March. But rookie James Pattinson (4-43) tore into India's top order and was well supported by Peter Siddle (3-55), who took his 100th Test wicket, and Ben Hilfenhaus (3-51) as all 10 India wickets fell to pace bowling, including nine to catches in the slips or at short-leg.

A Dutch court has sentenced a man who attacked a goalkeeper during a football match to a six-month prison term. The man, identified under Dutch privacy laws only as Wesley van W, ran on to the Amsterdam Arena pitch on 21st December. He tried to kick Esteban Alvarado from behind and the AZ Alkmaar goalkeeper retaliated by kicking the man twice. The goalie was given a red card for misconduct but this was later rescinded. Wesley van W told the court that he was very sorry for his actions and said he would also offer his apology to the AZ goalkeeper. Two months of the prison term were suspended, meaning they will only have to be served if another offence is committed in the next two years.

Mark Cavendish believes David Millar has paid the price for his doping past and deserves a second chance at London 2012. Millar admitted taking a performanceenhancing drug in 2004 but returned to the sport after serving a two-year ban. The veteran Scot, however, is still subject to the British Olympic Association's lifetime ban. "He's redeemed himself. I would love him to be [at London 2012]," BBC Sports Personality of the Year Cavendish said.
