SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND LEGAL LIMBO? - NATIONAL NEWS

Junta gives illegal home owners a late Xmas present As premier José Antonio Griñan promised last year, the Junta de Andalucia approved on Tuesday a decree which its Public Works chief Josefina Cruz called an “exercise in realism”.

regulations, and which meet minimum conditions of safety and habitability; those which did comply with urban planning regulations in force when they were built but which have since been changed, and all those built before 1975. The Partido Popular's housing spokesman in the Andalucian Parliament, Alicia Martinez, accused the Junta of “washing its hands of the problem and deceiving the citizenry”. Sra Martinez told a press conference after the decree was passed that it was “too complex,

ambiguous and contradictory” and would not solve the problem of houses built outside the law. She said it condemned many to “a social, economic and legal limbo in which they will continue to be illegal”. She criticised the Junta

for its “passivity”, recalling that the Andalucian Ombudsman had warned the Junta about the “proliferation of illegal housing back 2002”. The PP accused them of trying to “buy votes” ahead of the March regional election.

The decree makes it possible to regularise the legal situation of some 250,000 houses built throughout the region without the necessary permits over the past 10 years. Most of them were built in remote areas of the Axarquia in Malaga province or the Almanzora Valley in Almeria province. Sra Cruz said about 10 per cent, or 25,000, would probably have to be demolished because they were built on land classified as not suitable for building. The process to regularise some 200,000 properties could begin immediately because the urban crimes committed with their construction have already been prescribed. Another 25,000 could be legalised directly through obtaining an occupation licence. These include houses that were built without a licence but which do not contravene urban planning

WORLD savings target PHEW!

In a report released on Monday, Moody's Investors Service said Spain needs to find budget savings of €40 billion if it wants to meet its deficit target of 4.4 percent of GDP for this year.

k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

It’s getting ridiculous…. by the time I get back from this holiday I’m going to need another to get over it! We have been to Sydney, Melbourne, Sorrento, Queensville, Mount Bulla, Tasmania and tomorrow we’re off along the Great Ocean Road to Torquay for a couple of days. We’ve fed koalas, kangaroos, wombats, wallabies, Tasmanian devils, emus, ostriches and a 15-weekold lion cub. We’ve rounded up cattle and sheep on quad bikes, climbed mountains, and paddled in creeks, rivers and the ocean. The weather here on the other side of the world is changeable. It’s just getting into the summer so some days we have been getting 80º and others as low as 19º and raining buckets. It’s nice to have changes but the problem is that when you’re travelling by air you can’t take much and, yes, you could come with an empty case and buy stuff to suit the weather but then you’ve still got to be mindfull of your 20kg limit on the way back. I hear that you’ve been having good weather over there in Spain so that’s good news – far better than last year’s pouring with rain all the time. I also hear from the news that our new government is putting up taxes to cover the debts. All very well but when small businesses are struggling anyway, what’s the point? cafés can only charge so much for a cup of coffee, so where exactly does the government think they’re going to get the extra money from to pay these new taxes? Madness! They need government help not another kick in the teeth!!

The figure is almost twice as high as the combined savings cuts and tax hikes implemented between 2010 and 2011. Moody's said the situation it depicts is "negative" for Spain's credit profile, and warned further austerity measures are required to return the state's finances to a "sustainable" path. Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro said on Monday that the government had no plans to raise the value-added tax rate to rein in the deficit, and insisted that rises in personal income tax and the IBI were only temporary. Just a few days earlier, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said the government could not rule out an increase in VAT. Sr

Government 'will not be pressured' Interior minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said on Tuesday the government will not allow itself to be pressured by marches like the one last Saturday in Bilbao in support of jailed ETA prisoners' rights. He said similar marches were made every year about this time, the only difference being that this year the Basque terrorist group ETA had announced a “definitive cessation of violence”. The march on Saturday called for the “repatriation” of ETA prisoners to jails in the Basque Country from jails in the rest of the country and called them “political prisoners”, something they had promised the judge who authorised the march that they would not do. Several protest banners read “Repatriate all Basque prisoners” – in English for the foreign journalists who were in town to cover the march. Sr Diaz said giving ETA prisoners special treatment would be an infringement of the law. On Monday, Justice Minister Alberto RuizGallardon said ETA prisoners would not receive any special treatment or pardons. He said their cases would be dealt with on individual merit but only after they had asked their victims for forgiveness – something that most of the prisoners have refused to do.

Meanwhile, an internal ETA document, which a national newspaper claims to have seen, specifically states that the group “will

Journalist received payola

If you drive, don't do drugs

A former press secretary to former Balearics regional premier Jaume Matas (right) testified on Monday in the so-called Palma Arena corruption case that he was told to pay €12,000 to El Mundo reporter Antonio Alemany for a sports article that was never published.

Spain is top of the list for drug-related traffic offences, according to the latest EU study on driving under the influence of drugs, alcohol and medicines (DRUID).

Juan Martonell, who is cooperating in the investigation into a series of allegedly fraudulent contracts during Matas' term, told the court: "I never saw it."

The trial began on Monday to shouts of "criminal" and "crook" from protesters outside the Palma de Mallorca courthouse when Matas and Alemany arrived.

The former Partido Popular premier – who lived the high life during his term in office – and the El Mundo journalist are facing fraud and embezzlement charges in the first of 26 cases that

make up the Palma Arena case. The evidence uncovered has led to the investigation into King Juan Carlos' son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin who has been ordered to appear in court

next month to answer charges that he diverted public money from the Balearic government given to his non-profit Nóos Institute.

No agreement on Regions asked labour reforms to reduce Unions’ representatives and business leaders have failed to reach a broad agreement to tackle soaring unemployment ahead of the deadline set by the government. The head of the CCOO union, Ignacio Fernández Toxo,

his counterpart in the UGT union, Cándido Méndez, and Juan Rosell, the chairman of the Confederation of Business Organisations met on Monday and Tuesday but failed to breach major differences in areas such

as wage freezes, collective bargaining and layoffs. If there is no agreement by the deadline on Friday, the government will go ahead and impose reforms by decree.

'embassies'

The government has asked the regional governments to save money by reducing the number of their “embassies” abroad. At the last count (in 2010) the regions had a total of 200 embassies with Catalonia heading the list with 48. That was double the number of Valencia and Andalucia and four times more than Madrid. The government has calculated

these embassies or glorified tourism offices, could cost as much as €150 million.

It found that nearly double the number of drivers take illegal drugs or medicines that can affect performance (10.9 per cent) than those who drink (6.6 percent). Illegal drug use among drivers – especially of the most common substances, cocaine and marijuana – is very similar to the National Drug Agency's statistics on consumption. The EU study, which was carried out between 2009 and 2010, was based on random checks of 3,500 drivers in Spain.

In their stead, Foreign Minister José Manuel Garcia-Margallo has offered to designate Spanish officials at embassies, consulates and trade offices to deal specifically with the regions' interests to avoid duplications.

Spain breaks its transplants record Already a world leader in transplants, Spain broke its own records last year. The number of donors rose to 35.3 per million inhabitants, up from 32 in 2010. Health minister Ana Mato reported on Tuesday that 4,200 transplants were carried out last year, 500 more than in 2010. The number of from live transplants donors also rose, to the satisfaction of the National Transplant Organisation (ONT) which has been encouraging live donors to

make up for the drop in organs harvested from traffic accidents, which have been dropping steadily in recent years. There was also a drop in the number of families refusing to allow their loved ones' organs to be used, Sra Mato said. Cantabria was the region with the most donors – with 67.8 donors per million inhabitants – followed by La Rioja (62.5). But in absolute terms, the regions where the most donations took place were Andalucía (308) and Catalonia (238).

Women to pay for abortions Women wishing to terminate their pregnancies through the Balearic Islands public health system are to be referred to one of three accredited private clinics, where they will pay for the surgery up front and later apply to the regional authorities for a refund. The cost of an abortion in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy is around €500, and after that up to €1,500. The existing abortion legislation passed by the Socialist government gives women the right to free abortion up to 14 weeks.

One in five homes may be vacant

for tiny town

The imprisonment of two of the four members of a gypsy family detained early last week in connection with the murder of a Senegalese man in Barcelona took the heat out of a wave of street violence to protest against the death. A judge charged them with murder and ordered them to be held in preventive custody. The two others were released with charges of aggression and making threats against them. The detainees – a father and his three sons – live in the Besòs neighbourhood where 32year-old Ibrahima Dyei lived. Dyei was shot dead on January 3rd after an argument over a soccer match. His death ignited racial tensions between gypsies and African immigrants in the city. On Thursday last week, gypsy associations and representatives of the Senegalese residents in

Catalonia agreed to put their differences aside and made a public commitment not to foment more tension. But the atmosphere is still tense in Besòs, where drugs are commonplace and racial prejudice is rampant. The four men arrested – who have more than 60 police charges between them, ranging from drug trafficking to aggression– will not be missed.

Since the government announced it planned to build a temporary nuclear waste repository at Villar de Cañas in Cuenca province, the tiny town (pop. 442) has received hundreds of inquiries from individuals and companies in the rest of Spain about house prices and jobs. Mayor José María Saiz said it was “absolute madness” – he had already received more than 2,000 curriculum vitae from hopeful job seekers and a Barcelona guard dog training company wanted

to relocate to the town immediately. The heightened interest is not surprising. More than €284 million will be invested in the first phase of the repository's construction between now and 2015 and an estimated 500 jobs will be created. Another €315 million will be invested in the second phase, which will create at least 150 jobs. The mayor said he was going to give priority to the construction of a residence for the town's old people – 40% of the population are pensioners.

To check housing experts’ belief that there could be between five and six million empty homes in Spain, or over 20 per cent of the total, 5,000 agents from the National Statistics institute (iNE) are walking the streets to draw a precise map of occupied and empty houses and apartments. a similar exercise 10 years ago found 3.1 million empty homes, or 15 percent of the total, but the figure is likely to be much higher now, the experts warned.

Murcia

Judge fined for insulting gays a Murcia judge has been fined €3,000 euros for insulting homosexuals, single mothers and immigrants, according to a statement by the ccOO labour union, which filed the complaint, in addition to insulting same-sex married couples, the judge called single mothers whores, and told immigrants they only married Spaniards " to get their nationality." The ccOO said it was satisfied that the judge was finally fined "after many years of abuses" but said the decision was "somewhat light for such serious offences”.

DAVID’S

One neighbour said they had taken over the streets but no-one dared complain about them. Another said: "We couldn't stand them, I hope they stay in jail as long as I am still alive."

Police reduce traffic fine for 'poor' Sweden

Korea’s new leader Kim Jong-un

North Korea has said it will grant an amnesty for an unspecified number of prisoners to mark the birthdays of two late leaders. State news agency KCNA said that the amnesty would begin from February 1st, in honour of Kim Jongil, who died last month, and his father Kim Il-sung. KCNA said that the amnesty embodied the "noble, benevolent and allembracing politics of

President Kim Il-sung and leader Kim Jong-il". This year is being presented as the 70th anniversary of Kim Jong-il's birth and the centenary of his father. Amnesty International has estimated that as many as 200,000 people are being held in political prison

camps around the country. North Korea last conducted a prisoner amnesty in August 2005, to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of Japanese colonial rule, and the one before that was in 2002. It is not clear how many prisoners were freed on either occasion. Last

year Amnesty International said satellite imagery showed that the size of the camps inside North Korea were expanding. The group cited testimony from former prisoners describing a regime of torture, hunger and forced labour inside the camps.

Police cut in half a traffic fine for a Swedish trucker on the grounds that Swedes earn less than norwegians, according to the oslo newspaper Vg. When they stopped Ulf ander andersson, 61, last March, they found his brakes were

not in order. He was fined £857 but last month got a letter saying the sum had been reduced due to his nationality. Mr andersson told Vg he found it "very strange". norway and Sweden are among the richest countries in the world.

Swiss National Bank chairman resigns The chairman of the Swiss National Bank (SNB), Philipp Hildebrand, resigned on Monday with immediate effect, following revelations that his wife Kashya been involved in currency trading. He told a news conference he had "no knowledge" of his wife's transaction, on which she later made a profit. According to an investigation carried out by accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) on the bank's orders, Mrs Hildebrand

bought $504,000 on 15th August because she wanted to have half of the family's assets in US dollars. In early September, the central bank intervened to try to weaken the strong franc. Four weeks later, when the family converted $516,000

back into Swiss francs, they made a profit on the transaction because the franc had fallen against the dollar in that time. The Swiss National Bank cleared Mr Hildebrand of any wrongdoing in a report which detailed his wife's dealings in late

December. This report was published last week amid new allegations that Mr Hildebrand personally authorised foreign exchange dealings using his personal account three weeks before, and three weeks after Switzerland introduced a currency cap.

UK News Sandringham Body Identified The body that was found at Sandringham in Norfolk on New Year’s Day has been identified as that of 17year-old Alisa Dmitrijeva. Police are asking the people who organised events at Sandringham in Norfolk last summer to get in touch with the detectives that are investigating the murder. Police believe that the victim was at the event that took place betwen 30th August and 6th September, and that people who attended the event may know something. The Latvian-born girl was eventually identified by comparing details from her palm with records after forensic scientists had struggled to find conclusive proof through other tests. Miss Dmitrijeva, from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, was last seen in Friars Street, King's Lynn, on 31st August.

Detetective Chief Inspector Fry, who is leading the investigation team, said they also wanted to talk to anyone who had seen the teenager in the King's Lynn and Wisbech areas during those eight days last summer. "We particularly want to speak to people within the Latvian, Lithuanian and Russian communities in these areas, and are working with local groups and individuals who may be able to assist. Police have spoken to the Sandringham gamekeeper, estate manager and beaters as part of their investigations. Detectives believe Miss Dmitrijeva was murdered and said it was "highly unlikely" that she died through natural causes, with no evidence of accidental injury.

Government sources have denied reports that Westminister would set an 18-month limit on holding the poll if it transfers powers for a binding vote to Holyrood. But ministers may insist on a “yes or no” vote on independence – without the option of more powers for Scotland. Scotland’s Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon accused Westminister of “trying to interfere in Scottish democracy”. First Minister Alex Salmond (pictured above with David Cameron) has confirmed the Scottish government will publish a detailed consultation on its plans for an independence referendum by the end of January. Tolkien Missed Government Approved out on Nobel Prize

A controversial new highspeed rail line between London and Birmingham has been given the goahead by government. This first phase of High Speed Two (HS2) could be running by 2026, later extending to northern England. Transport Secretary Justine Greening has announced extra tunnelling along the 90mile (140km) first phase in response to environmental concerns.

Opponents also dispute government claims HS2 will deliver benefits worth up to £47bn, at costs of nearly £33bn. This would be followed by a second phase of Y-shaped track reaching Manchester and Leeds by about 2033. Travelling on 225mph trains, passengers would be able to commute from Birmingham to London in 45 minutes, reducing the journey time by almost half from one hour and 24 minutes. A Birmingham to Leeds journey would be

reduced from two hours to 57 minutes and a Manchester to London journey from two hours and eight minutes to one hour and eight minutes.

government estimates that the project could eventually result in nine million road journeys and 4.5 million journeys by plane instead being taken by train every year.

Connections to existing lines should then cut journey times between London, and Edinburgh and Glasgow, to three-anda-half hours. The first phase of HS2 will include a connection to Europe via the Channel Tunnel. On completion of HS2 the network would include a direct link to Heathrow.

Revisions to the route had halved the number of homes at risk, as well as reducing by a third the number due to experience increased noise, she said.

The Transport secretary called the line "the most significant transport infrastructure project since the building of the motorways". The

The Department for Transport said that 22.5 miles of the first phase would now be enclosed in tunnels or green tunnels – up from 14.5 miles for the route that went to consultation – and a further 56.5 miles of cuttings would significantly reduce "visual and noise impact".

The Nobel prize jury said "the result has not in any way measured up to storytelling of the highest quality". Yugoslav writer Ivo Andric won for the “epic force with which he has traced themes and depicted human destinies”. Other prominent literary figures put forward in 1961 included Britons EM Forster, author of works including Howards End, and The Alexandria Quartet, and the writer Lawrence Durrell. Americans John Steinbeck – who went on to win the prize a year later – and Robert Frost were also considered.

Poet Frost and Forster – both in their 80s – were ruled out by the jury because of their advanced years.

Seven young fishermen drowned off the Scottish coast after the disappearance of their scallop dredger in force nine gales.

Mother of missing children speaks out

International congresses lined up

Ruth Ortiz, the mother of six-year-old Ruth and two-year-old José Bretón who went missing in a Córdoba park three months ago while in the care of their father, has accused her ex-partner of being behind their disappearance. Speaking in public for the first time on Sunday, she told a group of journalists: "Everyone who knows José Bretón knows that he did not lose the children, and those who don't know him can be sure that I know what I am talking about."

She went on: "He has to tell the truth. He is responsible for the disappearance of my children and he must speak. His family also knows that he is to blame, but for them it is easier to cling to the hope that they

were lost, as he claims, rather than accept the stark reality." She and Bretón had separated not long before he reported them as missing. The couple used to live together in Huelva, and the children were visiting

Bretón in Córdoba, where he was living after they split up. He told police he lost track of them at around 6 pm on a Saturday afternoon, while walking in the Cruz Conde park. However, CCTV cameras show him entering the

park alone and witnesses who remember him said they never saw the children. Police have repeatedly searched properties owned by Bretón's parents but have not found any trace of the children.

Money for jobless spent on cocaine and partying The driver of the former director of the Junta de Andalucia's Labour Department told police in December that subsidies intended to help companies with labour problems had been spent on cocaine and partying, according to a report revealed by the ABC newspaper on Sunday. Juan Francisco Trujillo said his former boss, Francisco Javier Guerrero, had given him €900,000 in 2004 from the so-called ERE subsidies to spend. Trujillo said he bought a flat in Sevilla and a plot of land in the mountains before returning the rest of the money to his then boss. He told police that “We spent most of it on cocaine and partying”. Police have been investigating EREgate – as it was dubbed in the press – since it was discovered just over a year ago that Junta officials had been using for their own ends millions of euros intended to help struggling companies with severance

pay and early retirement for surplus workers. In a separate case, police have accused Ivan Chaves, the son of former Junta premier Manuel Chaves, of being involved in influence trafficking. Socialist Party spokeswoman Elena Valenciano said on Monday both sets of revelations were part of an ongoing campaign to

blacken the name of the former Junta premier. Chaves was made third deputy PM by Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero just under two years ago, shortly after it was revealed that the Junta he then headed had awarded a subsidy of €10 million to a Huelva company where his daughter worked as a legal consultant.

The association MalagaCON, set up three years ago by the Malaga Tourist Board to attract international congresses to the Costa del Sol, has announced that more than 20 congresses are booked between now and 2015. These include the Annual European Economic Association's meeting and the European Meeting of the Econometric Society. MalagaCON is currently working on its presentation to the IFLA World Library whose congresses are among the largest in the world. No hiding place for British criminals For more than a year now, the National Police have been trying to convince foreign criminals that the Costa del Sol is no longer an ideal hiding place for them. Since November 2010, the police have set up more than half a dozen control points to harass them. Police watch an urbanisation for several days to locate specific characters then make sure they know they're being watched when they leave their homes for any reason. A spokesman for the Costa del Sol Unit against Drugs and Organised Crime (Udyco) told a local paper: “They have got to learn that they can't go out to buy a loaf of bread, like any law-abiding citizen, that they're not going to be able to spend their illgotten gains in peace here on the Costa.” The police focus specifically on British criminals who are more easily identified because of their habit of meeting in the same places. The operation began after the police detected the presence of a group of Irishmen with links to Mafia groups in Torremolinos and This Benalmadena. followed the shooting of Irish tourist John O'Neill, aged 40, after he'd had an argument in a Benalmadena pub over the use of the toilet. In the past four years, the Costa del Sol has been the favourite refuge for Irish criminals, especially those who have fallen out with the drug bosses back home, the Udyca spokesman said. “They have formed their own drug trafficking networks in Malaga and made contact with the Moroccan traffickers.” But the police have had a fair measure of success in combating them. Between January 2010 and October 2011, they arrested 117 Irishmen along the Costa in connection with a variety of crimes.

The Udyca spokesman said the police made sure their activities didn't annoy Britons who are on holiday or live on the Costa. In fact there has been increasing collaborastion between them and the police, thanks to the CrimeStoppers campaigns. “They know they can report a compatriot they suspect of being a criminal anonymously and that by doing so they improve life here for themselves, families and friends.” To this end, the police have set up the email

address malaga.costadelsol@policia.es to enable foreigners to make anonymous reports. A good example of this increased collaboration is that just hours after CrimeStoppers launched its last campaign in October last year, a woman in Mijas told police that the bald unshaven man she'd seen on a programme on British TV was her neighbour. As a result, police were able to arrest Dominic Steven Powell, a 48-year-old Welshman wanted in Britain on paedophile charges.

No worries, just memories thanks to Funeral Care Spain Very few people, including the locals would know what to do in the event of a death of a friend or family. Living in Spain the problems seem even bigger, and even the most fluent of expats would struggle with the words needed to deal with the situation. Funeral Care Spain was originally formed directly from such an experience. During and after the death of a close family member Neal and Tracie were amazed and saddened at the lies and myths they were told by ´professional´ people. Since then they have moved from strength to strength joining forces with a national Spanish funeral

director to give a clear, simple and straightforward service to those who find themselves in a time of need. Their website www.funeralspain.com gives clear information and their personal knowledge of what to do and where to go is unrivalled. Letter from A Broad Dear News Readers, SPECTACULAR! That is the only word to even half way describe the Australian “woop woop” or outback. We stayed for three nights with friends of the family – no we didn’t sleep on a blanket on the ground under the stars… the mosquitos would have eaten us alive before dawn! We stayed on their farm in the bungalow that they have for guests that includes all mod cons. On the evening we got there, Ted and Jenny Lovick treated us to a barbecue on their terrace surrounded by gardens and shrubs with views over their farm. Food, wine and stubbies were enjoyed plus stimulating banter and chat. They took us all over the place into the “real” Australia where we saw kangaroos and wallabies in the wild one evening at dusk. You can travel for hours during the day without seeing any wildlife at all but, when the sun starts to set, that’s when they all get up and start about their business . The Lovick family have a

cabin next to a river where you can swim in crystal clear water or paddle a canoe as far as you wish before hitting a dam right at the end and that’s where we went the following day. We took lunch with us and just sat in the shade of the gum trees while the rest of them did all the energetic stuff. Their farm is around 1000 acres with cattle and Merino sheep in their hundreds. On the second day of our trip, we took to quad bikes, while Ted took to a trail bike to check on the animals and fencing. We met a lot of family members but the Lovicks are a big family in the area with cousins, aunts, uncles, second cousins. It seems there are hundreds of them when you come from a small family, but they are a tight knitted bunch who look after each other and everyone else’s kids and older relatives. Nice to see. The following day saw a trip into the wine region where we all had lunch before setting off once more into the bush. When I say

Ned Kelly

“bush” I mean an area that is sparsely populated. I always thought bushland was all flat and desert like (oh how our minds are led astray by films like “Australia”!) but I couldn’t be more wrong. There were incredibly steep hillsides with narrow roads to drive along where there were drops of hundreds of feet of densely wooded land. Small areas had been cut away by people for houses – some of which are also pretty spectacular – sheds, shacks and just cabins. We went along to a look-out point where a chap had holed up away from the police for a while and is said to have “taught” Ned Kelly. However, this chap.... continued on page 27 from Kym Wickham, Down Under

irst of all, I hope they find the new PM soon. He was last seen at the traditional armed forces New Year ceremony hosted by King Juan Carlos last Friday but immediately went back into hiding. It was announced on Monday that he’ll give his first press conference next week, but it will be a joint one with visiting French president Nicolas Sarkozy so he’ll be able to steer reporters’ questions to wider European problems rather than homegrown ones. This elusive Spanish Pimpernel has already let it be known that he will not be addressing Parliament until the end of the month, which really got the opposition’s bowels in an uproar. But joking apart, I suspect Mariano Rajoy is giving the opposition a bit of tit for tat for all the humiliations and insults they’ve heaped on him during the past eight years. Right now, they’re spitting blood in anger and helpless frustration because they know they can’t force him to dance to their tune – he has an absolute majority and, as he told the proindependence Basque Amaiur coalition, he doesn’t owe anything to anybody. I suspect that he’s preparing a long list of the Socialist government’s economic sins and omissions that will make his first appearance in Parliament a truly memorable event.

S

econdly, I hope the new government will be able to do something to help those five million unemployed. The official unemployment figure stood at 4.4 million when the PP government was sworn in and some people may be wondering where the other 600,000 came from, seemingly overnight. In fact, at least half a million unemployed people have never claimed dole, usually because they were being paid in “black money” so their bosses could avoid paying social security for them. The Socialist government tended to “overlook” them because they made the unemployment figures look worse. However, the new government is taking them into account, which I hope indicates a determination not to hide the true magnitude of this or any other problem.

J T

ust for the record, unemployment stood at just over 2.2 million when Zapatero took over in April 2004.

hirdly, for the sake of the country and its people, I’m praying that former deputy PM Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, or someone of his generation, will win the fight for the leadership of the Socialist Party. His only opponent at the moment is former defence minister Carme Chacon who, until

a few days ago, passed herself off as a Catalan. She was born in Barcelona but we found out over the past weekend that her father was born in Almeria – where she launched her bid for general secretary. She now claims she is a “true” Spaniard because one of her grandparents is from Extremadura – probably her anarchist grandfather – and another was from Castilla-Leon. Her recent ancestors – like those of at least half of today’s Catalans – probably went to Barcelona seeking work in the 1950s and 60s. She’s no doubt searching the records for a relative born in Andalucia, the region with the highest number of the delegate votes she will need to get elected next month. Like Zapatero she wants to be all things to all men but that should not surprise us she was, after all, one of Zapatero’s “girls”, that is, a yes-woman. She had no qualifications to head the defence ministry, except that he was grooming her to become the country’s first woman PM. Like the rest of his “girls” she’s a political lightweight who belongs to the most “progressive” wing of the Socialist Party. If the “progrés”, as they call themselves, had spent less time and money on teaching teenagers how to masturbate and more on providing them with jobs when they left school, the economic situation might be somewhat better than it is now. (I lie thee not. When she was Equality minister, Babiano Aido spent some €30,000 on a pamphlet for 12 to 14 year olds to show them they didn’t need a partner to get sexual pleasure. Another one of her pearls was that a foetus cannot be classified as human until it is 14 weeks old – thus settling a medical and religious argument that’s been going on for centuries. Before she got the job, she worked at Andalucia’s Flamenco Foundation – and should have stayed there.)

t isn’t the trial of the century but it is a case that has helped blow open the dubious dealings of the king’s son-inlaw. Jaume Matas was a very rich politician who, according to prosecutors, made his money by handing out favours to his cohorts and cronies when he served as regional premier of the Balearic Islands. Matas was an ambitious man, who wanted to turn Majorca into the next Monte Carlo. He spent a great deal of his second term transforming the Mediterranean islands into a first-class resort, complete with an opera house overlooking the sea, a subway system that would put Rome’s limited tube network to shame, and a sports centre built with Siberian pine imported from Ukraine. There was a lot of money going around during the early part of the decade, much of it passed out in €500 notes.

T

hen came an anonymous call to the authorities. Matas’ wife and brotherin-law were spending cash on jewellery and dress clothes as if it were going out of style. The Popular Party (PP) politician was also buying Italian furniture, fine paintings and vintage wine. They say his palatial home in Majorca cost €4 million. The elegantly dressed Matas also made it a point to groom his image. Spending hundreds of thousands of euros, the island chief wanted the people to like him. His flashy, friendly smile was posted in more than 30,000 photos taken by his PR people and seen all over the islands. It was precisely that public relations campaign that has Matas in the dock – his first trial out of many. Investigators say that he handed out public contracts to El Mundo journalist Antonio Alemany to write his speeches and publish articles in Spain’s second leading daily glamorising his administration and the work he was doing to make the islands into a playground for the rich and famous. The problem was that many of the articles never got published, and Alemany, according to prosecutors, took the money and ran.

A

fter that now-famous phone tip about the wife’s shopping sprees, Madrid investigators began to discover a host of irregularities taking in place in the Matas fiefdom. That glorious Palma Arena sports complex – the one that would be inaugurated with a special tennis tourney by Roger Federer and Majorca golden boy Rafa Nadal – cost nearly three times more than the €44 million that was budgeted for it. Where did the rest of the

money go? Prosecutors want to know. The criminal probe turned into massive investigation with 26 separate cases that could end up in 26 different trials. Matas was handing out contracts left and right, and King Juan Carlos’ son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin, also allegedly profited. The former Spanish Olympic handball player and husband to the Infanta Cristina reportedly received some €3 million in contracts from Matas’ government to organise sports and tourism conventions. The money was given to a non-profit institute set up by Urdangarin and his partner, Diego Torres, and, according to investigators, later funnelled to the royal son-in-law’s private businesses, including several firms in which the king’s daughter was also a partner. Urdangarin has been indicted and subpoenaed to appear in court next month; the Infanta Cristina has not been charged.

M

atas was apparently a true operator. Two years ago, during the Christmas holidays, the regional premier received some uninvited guests at his home. They were armed with a search warrant and were looking specifically for one thing. There had been rumours of a secret safe in the Matas home that the Balearic chief and his wife used as their petty cash box. It was well hidden behind a closet and it took time for authorities to find it.

D

espite the money they spent on their luxurious haven, the Matas didn’t have much time to enjoy their palatial abode. Following his arrest in 2010, the former regional chief had to put up his home as collateral for bail. Now he stands to lose it later this month when it goes on the auction block after he failed to pay interest on the Banco de Valencia loan he took out for the bond to keep him out of jail. This entire Balearic corruption ring broke wide open just because one woman was passing around too many €500 notes.

Eleaza Galea was commissioned by the town hall of Almachar in Axarquia to produce a sculpture in memory of all the people who lost their lives during the civil war. A separate commemoration was made last year to one of the mayors of the period when his remains were discovered. As an artist Galea wanted to make a sculpture that would bring people a feeling of peace and the feedback from the people of Almachar said just that. He is happy about how well his work was received and is keen to point out that as an artist is politically and religiously neutral. The memorial is made from limestone with

Tea at Sam's by U3A writer Local author Sue Cross only began writing about six years ago after retiring when she joined a writing group near Fuengirola. She now attends the U3A Writers’ Workshop in Marbella which she describes as “a great inspiration”. Her latest novel, “Tea at Sam's” is now available from Amazon.es (in paperback or ebook or versions). Andalucia features heavily in the story and ends there, with some events being set in Ronda. One critic wrote that she “just loved the description of Spain which captured something magical”. The writers’ workshop is just one of many courses run by the University of the Third Age, Marbella and Inland Group. The current course, with leader, Tony Merrington meets in Marbella on Wednesdays. He says “We all have a book inside us – or at least a story or two. Come and develop

Smokey Joe’s, established since 2008 and based in Villanueva de la Concepcion, continues to supply and install a wide range of cast iron and steel plate wood burning stoves at affordable prices to customers on the coast and inland. We pride ourselves on professional workmanship, quality products, helpful customer support and an honest value for money service. All of us at Smokey Joe’s understand that since way back in history when man first created a spark and harnessed the power of burning wood fire has been a focal point for families and communities throughout the ages. In this modern age, there is a trend for a return to wood as fuel especially for heating – after all it is a renewable source of energy that whilst it grows takes up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and expels oxygen. It also provides a

valuable habitat for other living creatures and scientists have proved that when we ignite wood and burn it to ash, the exact same amount of C02 is returned into the atmosphere as would be if the tree were to die and be left to rot where it fell. How green is that? Smokey Joe’s knows that an open fire in your home creates an unmatched ambience, but do you know that you are losing up to 75% of the heat up the chimney? A wood burning stove creates the same ambience but you get the benefits of 60% more heat from each piece of wood you burn. Wood burning

stoves can be fitted into existing fireplaces or they can be free standing up against a wall, fitted into a corner or stood central in the room where they are flue piped to the outside, so no chimney or fireplace – no problem! MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

War Horse

A

lmost every time I turn on the TV these days “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” is on. Once I caught the remake, but four out of five times it’s the original. Not that I am complaining, I’ve probably watched it a hundred times and I never tire of it, but the more I see it, the more I realise how much better it is than the remake.

Director: Steven Spielberg Starring: Jeremy Irvine, Peter Mullan, Emily Watson A much-loved book aimed at children which became an award winning stage play using amazing puppets of horses, and now a movie made by the master of emotional manipulation Steven Speilberg, War Horse is an emotional drama likely to feature in the year's movie awards. It's the story of a remarkable friendship between Joey the horse, and the young man Albert (newcomer Irvine) who tames and trains him. His drunken father (Mullan)

sells Joey to a cavalry officer, Captain Nicholls (Tom Hiddleston) and the horse is transported to the front in the First World War. The only way Albert can try to save Joey is by following him to the battlefields of Europe. Spielberg saw the stunning stage production, in which those remarkable puppets caught the imagination of audiences, and decided that this was one production he wanted to bring to the silver screen. The movie takes in the sweeping canvas of rural

England and the war torn horrors of the battlefield but Spielberg tries to avoid Saving Private Ryan horrors and does not dwell on the fighting and sacrifices but more on the unique bond between a young man and his horse. But the mud and blood of the battlefields are inevitably an integral part of the story – many millions of horses lost their lives in the First World War – and Spielberg has crafted a lush and moving family epic with old fashioned

J traditional values and dignity at its core. Some critics have accused the director of schmaltz, but many others have applauded it as being both moving and memorable. Just don't forget to take the tissues!

Aladdin Sane’s seventies magic Ziggy Stardust's nonidentical twin, Aladdin Sane often gets overlooked when Bowie's best albums are named. Many say that Aladdin Sane is a knock-off CENTRO DE IDIOMAS

of Ziggy Stardust, but it’s not, it’s better. True, Bowie wrote most of the album while on the Ziggy tour, but this album is on a whole new level, the musical arrangements, the creativity and originality are second to none. It kicks right into high gear with the urgent Watch That Man and quickly sets a different pace with the moody, jazzy Aladdin Sane. Time shows the theatrical creativity of Bowie's vocals and Panic In Detroit and The Jean Genie show more of Bowie's creative rock twist and Mick Ronson is at his best. The percussion in Panic in Detroit is awesome and drives the song along with the great guitar work. The Prettiest Star is a 50s

ohnny Depp total missed the point when he took the role of Willy Wonka, and I know that Roald Dahl wasn’t happy with the original and the that the remake is closer to the book, but it’s just not good. Thinking about it I’m not sure if I’m that into Tim Burton’s stuff, he always uses Carter and Depp and Elfman always does the music. I know that I really didn’t care for his version of “Sweeney Todd”, Alan Rickman, must have really needed the work! Burton seems to live in a strange world that is as scary as his hair, all of his movies have a bizarre magic to them, which is appealing at first, but after a few viewings it doesn’t age well.

G

throwback with great background vocals, I have always thought of it as a country song – it’s hard to deny that it’s got a country twang to it. The remake of the Stones Let's Spend the Night Together is a brilliant, original arrangement. I'm certain the Stones never thought of this arrangement while writing this tune. The whole album is superb, however one of my all time favourites has to be

Drive-In-Saturday, it’s cheesy, with a 50s undertone and doo-wop stylings. No record collection should be without David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane, it’s like your private little time capsule that you can jump into every now and then and escape back to the 70s.

etting back to Willy Wonka, the original is by far the best and Gene Wilder is magical, his eyes, his hair. If anything Wilder was born to play that part, and don’t get me started on his purple velvet jacket – I want one! The original has more humour, and at some point every character sings a song, but not in the remake. In the remake the songs are only sung by the Oompa Loompas, I like the new Oompa Loompas, and their songs aren’t as creepy, but whenever someone has orange skin and green hair – it’s an Oompa Loompa. The new guys just aren’t creepy

enough, however Depp is just too creepy, why he decided to model himself on Michael Jackson, is beyond me.

I

think Deep Roy, the little guy who played all the Oompa Loompas (yes, all of them), in the new one, did a good job and the Oompa Loompa songs were kind of catchy and cute. But even so, I can´t think of Willy Wonka and not think of Wilder singing “Pure Imagination”.

Y

ou can tell how good a movie is by the amount of spoofs of it, for example, “Family Guy” made a whole episode based on the original Wonka movie. Peter finds a golden ticket and get to visit the Pawtucket Brewery, where Pawtucket Pat (dressed like Wilder) sings his own version of “Pure Imagination” called “Pure Inebriation”. Shortly after Peter and Brian are quickly kicked out after breaking the rules.

B

urton´s remake is too sinister and too long, and although it may be closer to the book, it´s not really child friendly. However, I don´t think Dahl was very child friendly. The original is the best and always will be, it’s cute, funny and quirky. Burton seem to try and squeeze too much in, and the flashbacks that Depp has really annoy me, plus the flashback of how he met the Oompa Loompas was totally unnecessary

I

suppose what I am getting at is, you can´t beat the originals!

This week is full of adventure when new people appear in your life, you could be feeling restless. Take the direct approach, open your eyes a little bit wider and don’t take things at face value; you need to ask questions and make sure you get clear answers. There is something that you want to change and in order to do that you have to make sure you have all the facts so that you can see things as they really are. Anything secretive you tend to do at the moment easily becomes public knowledge, take the high road and you will succeed and shine by doing things the right way. You are high in passion and you need to take control of your primal forces as this energy makes it super easy to give into personal temptations or to even go and seek them out. This is a great time for personal relationships and you will feel new vitality and purpose entering your life. You may have been wrestling over something for months either not able to get a clear answer or never finding your way to a reasonable solution. This week a veil is lifted and where you have ‘been in the dark’ and not aware of the things going on behind the scenes then a new piece of information will make or break a certain arrangement. This week changes the whole picture and helps you strive forward with confidence A wave of great change cannot happen unless there is enough powerful emotion behind it to encourage it forward. It is a time to take charge and take the lead where in the past you may have taken a back seat. You have vision, courage and a strong voice where you can be respected and finally heard. Make sure you lighten up and do not panic should trouble appear in your personal life, you are the voice of reason that everyone will take notice of this week. If the year before ended rocky and rough then the beginning of a new year can be a bit tricky – you may find yourself feeling some unusually high emotional swings, aching to fix what appears to be broken. The key is to keep things simple. Use this as a sign to clean up and clear out anything that is blocking you from having the love in your life that you want. Stay on course and take some time for yourself to rest, relax and look after your health. You could be feeling a surge of fiery force giving you the bravery to look at things that in the past you have buried or denied. A new start is here and you have a new find and a new process of dealing with what is not ‘right’ in your life. This month is one of liberation that will allow you to carry those desired changes through and forward. The inner warrior is rising up to shine, now you believe in you, your dreams are within your reach.

A little bit more patience and we will see you coasting in towards pleasing waters. Wherever you have experienced true hardship and challenge whether in the home, in the heart or in your work, you can expect to get some relief, even if it is simply a subtle sign of better days to come. Something you started a while ago will need September 23rd - you to follow through on, listen to your gut instincts, whatever used to seem October 22nd impossible is now within your grasp.

Serves 4

4 (680g) white fish fillets 1 egg white 120 ml milk 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice 60g white flour 60g dried breadcrumbs 2 teaspoons paprika 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions Position rack on top shelf in oven. Preheat oven to 500 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil and set a wire rack on top. Lightly spray or brush rack with vegetable oil. Pat fish dry with paper towels. Slice fillets in half lengthwise to form long pieces. In a pie plate or wide shallow dish, whisk egg white with milk and lemon juice and leave to stand for 10 mins. In another dish, mix flour with bread crumbs, paprika, cayenne and salt. Working with one piece of fish at a time, lightly coat with flour mixture. Shake off excess flour, then dip into milk mixture. Turn to evenly coat.

Shake off excess liquid. Coat fish in flour mixture again. Shake off excess coating, then place on rack. Repeat with remaining fish, one piece at a time. Discard any remaining milk or flour mixture. Lightly spray fish with oil or, using a brush, lightly dab about 1 tbsp oil as evenly as possible over coating. Do not skip this step – it is essential for crispy fish! Bake on top rack of preheated oven until coating is crisp and golden, 12 to 15 minutes. Do not turn.

No more beating around the bush or wasting time on superfluous insignificances. You can rest assured and know that this is where the rubber meets the road. If you need help, don’t be shy, ask for it and you will be surprised by the sincere responses. New partnerships are likely to be formed, these can be either professional or romantic, although there may be some tension created within your home and your professional life.

You are stronger than you realise and have more invisible support than you can possibly imagine, especially now, there is something, even though the past makes you question this feeling, that you can count on without question. You must have earned whatever you have coming to you, after a long hard season of blood, sweat and tears. Rise above any madness and remain locked in and focused on what you are doing, remain positive and that energy will lift others.

Directions Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4. Line the base of a 23cm springform tin with baking parchment. Gently melt 115g of the chocolate, in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Stir in the crushed digestive biscuits, then press the mixture into the base of the tin. Bake for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, beat the soft cheese for 2 minutes until creamy. Add the mashed bananas, caster sugar, vanilla extract and lemon juice. Beat until combined. Whisk in the eggs, stir in the soured cream and

pour over the biscuit base. Melt the remaining chocolate and dot small spoonfuls on the cheesecake, using a skewer to create a marbled effect. Reduce the oven to 120°C, fan 100°C, gas 1⁄2 and bake for 1 hour, 10 minutes (when you shake the tin gently, the filling should have a slight wobble). Turn off the oven and cool completely. All Eyes and Cameras focus on Kate .....and a busy year is planned for the new bride as the Olympics get underway After attending a gala film premiere in a full-length lacy evening gown, the Duchess of Cambridge stepped out of the public gaze on Monday to celebrate her milestone 30th birthday in private.

Prince William

The Duchess turned heads and dominated Britain's Monday morning front pages after attending the London opening of Steven Spielberg's "War Horse" wearing a striking design by Alice Temperley. The premiere was held in aid of The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry, of which Kate is also a patron.

Palace officials said the Duchess of Cambridge's birthday celebration was a "low-key and private" affair. The choice of a muted event seems appropriate: after all, the duchess is not just starting the fourth decade of her life, she is also embarking on her career as a future queen, charged with renovating a monarchy that has become somewhat creaky with age. The past year has seen momentous changes for Kate, with a fairytale wedding to Prince William, travels around the world and glamorous appearances that marked her transition from commoner to the

world's most talked-about princess and style icon. She has won rave reviews for her sparkle, her elegant sense of style, and her common touch with the public. But now that the excitement around her grand wedding has subsided, she is expected to quietly settle down into her royal duties — and for much of this year, that means helping Queen Elizabeth II celebrate her Diamond Jubilee, without upstaging the monarch in her moment of glory, and also playing a supporting role at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Sad early loss of British Greek Museum eft TV producer Richard Hopkins, the British TV producer has died at the age of 47. Sony Music issued a statement on Monday saying that Hopkins died on Saturday after an eight-month battle with cancer. Over his 20-year career, Hopkins produced "Fame Academy" and "Fear Factor" in Britain. He worked on the first series of reality show "Big Brother" before developing, pitching and producing the megapopular dance contest "Strictly Come Dancing". He brought the format to America, where the show was named "Dancing With the Stars." Hopkins ran the BBC's format

entertainment division between 2003 and 2006, then launched Fever Media, a joint venture TV company with Sony Music. Fever Media joint managing director David Mortimer said, “Television is by its nature an

ephemeral business, so very few of us can hope to have any lasting legacy. Richard was a glorious exception to this rule, and as one of the greatest producers of his generation he quite literally got the world dancing."

In a statement, police said a Mondrian painting and a sketch by Italian artist Guglielmo Caccia (also known as Il Moncalvo) had also been stolen. The heist took just seven minutes – the thief or thieves broke into the back of the gallery after forcing open a balcony door. All three artworks were stripped from their frames.

A guard was alerted by a burglar alarm and then caught sight of the silhouette of someone who was running from the building. He ran after the thief, who dropped another painting – Mondrian's Landscape – as he made his escape.

The theft occurred on the final day of an exhibition called Unknown Treasures. The museum was scheduled to close after the exhibit for refurbishment. Museum officials have not yet determined the worth of the stolen artwork.

Minaj to start own line Another Jackson Auction Pop star rapper Nicki Minaj, best known for 'Super Bass' established herself as a major star over the last year and will be releasing her second album, titled 'Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded' in February of this year. However, it is not just music that Nicki is looking to dominate. In an interview with the New York Times, Nicki's manager revealed that a clothing range is in the pipeline for this year –

though she has yet to negotiate a deal with a fashion house, to enable her to sell her own designs. Then again, considering her fashion taste (as pictured right), perhaps it would be best if she stuck to music. The world isn´t quite ready for her sort of fashion revolution just yet!

Previously unreleased lyrics written by Michael Jackson are set to be a big seller at an upcoming Los Angeles auction. The eight-and-a-half line verse is being sold by

Dr Arnold Klein, the late star's dermatologist, and is expected to go for almost £3,100. Klein is giving up the handwritten lyrics, which feature the lines "Across

the sea of time, we shall meet on endless shores, counting our blessings of love's eternity", after being declared bankrupt last year. The sale will be in Los Angeles on 23rd January.

Can music relieve pain?

Brain can start declining at 45 The brain's ability to function can start to deteriorate as early as 45 say University College London researchers after assessing the memory, vocabulary and comprehension skills of 7,000 men and women aged 45 to 70 over 10 years. Previous research had suggested that cognitive decline does not begin much before the age of 60. But this study found a 3.6% decline in mental reasoning in women and men aged 45-49. The researchers said their finding was important because dementia

treatments are more likely to work at the time when individuals start to experience mental impairment. The study also found a 9.6% decline in mental reasoning in men aged 65-70 and a 7.4% decline for women of the same age. A spokesman for Alzheimer's Research UK

said he would like to see similar studies carried out in a wider population sample. He said: "Although we don't yet have a surefire way to prevent dementia, we do know that simple lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet, not smoking, and keeping blood pressure

and cholesterol in check can all reduce the risk of dementia." He added: "We need only look at the problems that childhood obesity rates will cause if they are not addressed to see how important it is that we take 'cradle to grave' approach to public health."

A growing number of doctors are using music in clinical settings, believing that it might have analgesic effects on patients or at least take their minds off an otherwise painful procedure. Scientists only now are seeking to determine whether the notion is more romance than reality. In the most recent study, 153 people were subjected to increasingly painful shocks on their hands as they listened to music. All the while, they were encouraged to engage in the songs and to identify certain notes and tones. By measuring pupil dilation and brain activity, scientists at the University of Utah found that as the subjects became focused on the melodies, they experienced more and more relief from pain. A Swedish study reported similarly encouraging findings– children who were given “music therapy” after minor surgery required smaller amounts of morphine than those who

were not. But a meta-analysis of data on more than 3,600 patients in 51 studies found that the magnitude of the effect was not very large. The researchers concluded that listening to music during or after a medical procedure may relieve pain, but more research is needed to determine whether the effect is significant.

Tel: 952 666 787 - Mobile 630 800 572 As one of the four routes by which substances normally exit the body (the others being faeces, breath and sweat), urine plays a valuable role in medicine because it tells health professionals how well a person’s body is functioning. That is why doctors routinely request urine samples from patients, whether they seem healthy or are obviously sick. The colour, clarity and other physical characteristics of urine, as well as substances dissolved in it, can provide clues to a wide range of problems, including

infections, inherited metabolic disorders, kidney disease, bladder cancer, diabetes, substance abuse, among others. The urine of a well hydrated individual is urine is clear and pale yellow, a colour imparted by the pigment urochrome. Dehydration, which can be the consequence of drinking too little or sweating too much, produces dark urine with a smell of ammonia, but consistently darkcoloured urine can be a sign of hepatitis, which requires prompt medical attention. Many foods and certain medications can impart an

unusual and sometimes alarming colour – beets, for example, can turn urine a colour that may resemble blood. But if there is real blood in the urine, a check for kidney disease or cancer is mandatory. The volume of urine produced can be an important indicator of hydration. A healthy person normally produces about 100 milliliters (about 3.4 ounces) of urine an hour and. If the hourly output exceeds 300 milliliters, it could be a sign of excessive fluid intake; if the volume drops below 30 milliliters, it is probably a sign of dehydration.

Linda & Gary Irwin, El Paraiso Can I congratulate you on producing a first class local newspaper. I look forward to collecting and reading my copy every Wednesday. And can I especially thank Ken Campbell for his informative and often very amusing Stargazing section. I think it is an excellent idea that you have a stargazing section each week.

Up where we live we have lovely clear skies and Ken tells us each week where and when to look at the stars in a very clear and easy to understand way. We have learned so much from his articles and have even been able to recognise Orion the hunter this week because of his description. But why is his name not listed

Richard Mullins, Alhaurin el Grande I was interested to read the article about the new tolls introduced in Portugal on the motoring page last week. I had seen the previous article saying that the tolls

were going to be very high as had a number of my friends. We were shocked that the Portuguese government would bring in such extortionate rates and cancelled a planned trip to Portugal because of this.

Brian Jones, Coin The article about the European Health Insurance card in last week’s paper was useful but there are a couple of things that should be made clear. Firstly, the EHIC is only intended to cover people for Emergency treatment – in other words medical treatment you may need during your visit to another

along with other contributers to the paper and also why is there is no photograph of him above his column? Editor s response: Two very good questions! Obiviously an oversight on our part not to have included him on the contributors list - rectified on page 3 this week. As for the photo, if you want to see Ken, log on to his site.

It does also cover some additional items such as necessary treatment for long-term conditions and existing illnesses, such as kidney dialysis or routine maternity care. It should also be borne in mind that the card does not cover private medical treatment. Secondly,

On the day we left, we took a trip up to the top of Mount Bulla where there were amazing views – plus a tarantula on the path that I gave a very wide berth to – Yeuk!! 2012 e End Of e World? You’re probably going to be hearing a lot about this during this year so I thought I’d get my tuppence worth in first and try and dispel the rumours.

widespread belief is gaining in strength that the world will end on 21st December 2012 – there has even been a Hollywood blockbuster movie made about it. So what does it all mean?

T

he Mayans were a race of people who inhabited the area just North of where the Panama Canal in Central America now runs. The area covers Guatemala, Belize, Northern El Salvador and western Honduras. Earliest records go back to somewhere between 2600BC and 3100BC. It is thought that a 200-year drought all but wiped out the civilisation in the 8th or 9th century AD and its people dispersed from this area to spread across South America.

T

he Mayans were a civilisation way ahead of their time, building incredible structures, temples, monumental palaces, cities and stepped pyramids. They traded with other tribes as far away as the Gulf of Mexico and even the Caribbean islands. They made great advances in writing, mathematics, architecture and astronomy; they even invented chocolate. But the other thing they did was to produce a calendar. And here’s where the problem stems from.

Continued from page 12. However, this chap apparently used no violence and was courteous to women. From his hideout he could see for miles but kept peacocks so that they would screech and let him know whenever the police were about to arrive and nab him. However, the idea obviously didn’t work under certain circumstances and the guy was caught and sent to prison in the end.

. Black holes. The nearest black hole is probably at the centre of our galaxy 100,000 light years away from us and so is very unlikely to sneak up and grab us a few days before Christmas.

4

. An asteroid strikes. Well this is something that could happen at any time. There are hundreds of asteroids that could possibly pose a threat to earth, but the skies are being scanned not only by professional astronomers but also by countless numbers of amateur backyard astronomers with their telescopes and nothing has been sighted yet.

5

. Planet Nibiru. This is my favourite, apparently there is another planet known as Planet X that is lurking in the solar system inhabited by aliens that are going to invade earth. Now planets are really big in size and although they move fairly quickly in their orbits around the sun you can bet that if a planet was less than one year away from Earth you would only have to look up into the sky to see it!

I

. An outburst from the sun. The sun has been shining for almost six billion years and in all that time it has done nothing but bring light, warmth and life to the earth. It is being studied in more detail now than it has ever been and the result is that it is a very stable star that will continue for another five billion years.

t should be noted that the Planet X idea, which has appeared in various forms since 1995, initially predicted doomsday in May 2003, but proponents later abandoned that date after it passed without incident. There have been predictions of doomsday almost every year, all of which have failed to materialise but there are still some people who can be duped. When comet Hale-Bopp appeared in 1997, rumours surfaced that an alien spacecraft was following the comet – covered up, of course, by NASA. Even though the claim was refuted by astronomers (and by anyone else with a good telescope) 39 of the Heavens Gate cult members committed suicide.

ccording to some new age prophets the Mayan calendar ends on 21/12/12 thus signalling the end of the world. Scenarios suggested for the end of the world include the arrival of the next solar maximum, strange astronomical alignments or earth's collision with a black hole, passing asteroid or a planet called ‘Nibiru’. The internet is awash with web pages all trying to predict what will happen to spoil next Christmas.

Lorenzo to get his motorcycle license Before heading to India for a six-day whirlwind promotional tour for Yamaha, Jorge Lorenzo took the time to take and pass the theory test to get his motorcycle license. He posted on his Facebook page, “Hey guys! Although it sounds like a joke, i just pass the motorcycle theory test!! Actually we think that the three-time World Champion already has the A1 permit as he has been seen driving around Barcelona on a vintage scooter. and the practical test should be a breeze for Lorenzo as he was involved in promoting motorcycle safety for Motoescuela.

Land Rover Concept at Auto Expo Land Rover’s Defender Concept 100 and Defender Concept 100 Sport have made their Indian debut at the New Delhi Auto Expo 2012. These concepts investigate the potential design direction for a replacement for the iconic Defender.

Shown for the first time in Firenze Red paint with a white roof, the Defender Concept 100 re-invents the essential Defender design cues for the 21st century. These include short overhangs for extreme approach and departure

angles, vertical panels, an upright windscreen and strong shoulder line for visibility and ease of positioning and, of course, the honest Defender ‘face’ with its signature round lamps and prominent grille, incorporating a winch. Also in Firenze Red, the Defender Concept 100 Sport takes all these key design cues and adds to them the spirit of freedom

Rules change for Formula 1 Formula 1 bosses have changed the rules to prevent drivers 'blocking' a rival who is trying to pass them. The move was prompted by an incident involving Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton in Italy last season (pictured below). The new rule, officially published on Wednesday, forbids drivers from moving back on to the racing line if they have moved off it to defend. It formally enshrines what had previously been an agreement between the drivers. The new rule is article 20.3 of the F1 sporting regulations. It says: "More than one change of direction to defend a position is not permitted. "Any driver moving back towards the racing line, having earlier defended his position off line, should

leave at least one car width between his own car and the edge of the track on the approach to the corner." It is this that so incensed Hamilton about Schumacher's driving in Monza – there was one incident between the second chicane and the first Lesmo corner which prompted the Englishman to get on the radio to his team and say: "I thought you were only allowed to make one move." Schumacher's Mercedes team received a number of warnings from race director Charlie Whiting during his defence in Italy, and team boss Ross Brawn went on the radio to remind him to "leave room" for Hamilton when he was defending. The previous rule that forbids drivers from forcing rivals off the track remains.

next generation of Land Rover’s acclaimed Terrain Response system which will optimise the car for any conditions without driver pre-selection. In addition, a new Terrain-i system creates an intelligent map of the topography in front of the car and displays it as a 3D visualisation. Terraini automatically identifies potential hazards and suggests alternative routes. In urban environments the same system is able to accurately identify pedestrians and hazards. The exceptional performance – which includes an individual alltime best showing from SEAT’s most familiar model – sees the firm’s share of the UK new car market climb almost ten per cent versus 2010, and that in a market which is down by more than four per cent in the last 12 months.

Dovizioso is the latest casualty in MotoGP Andrea Dovizioso has broken his collarbone and faces a battle to be fit for the first MotoGP test session of 2012 in Sepang on 31st January. The Italian rider, who will race for Monster Yamaha Tech 3 in 2012, suffered the injury in a motorcross accident. Dovizioso, 25, posted a picture of himself on Twitter in a plastercast. Manager Simone Batistella said: "He will have an operation on Saturday and then we'll know if everything's going to plan." Dovizioso finished a career-best third in the 2011 MotoGP world championship, his third and final season at Repsol Honda. He will ride alongside Englishman Cal Crutchlow for Tech 3 next season. Both Crutchlow and former team-mate Colin Edwards suffered the same injury last season.

Tech 3 boss Herve Poncharal said: "There are three weeks before the Sepang test, which is the first one of the year. "Both Colin Edwards and Cal recovered very quickly from similar injuries last season." Ducati rider Nicky Hayden broke his left shoulder blade and fractured two ribs at an indoor flat track facility in December and could also miss the first test session. The first race of the season will take place at the desert circuit of Losail in Qatar on 8th April 2012.

Atlético hold Malaga Axarquia Rugby kick off 2012 Malaga 0 - 0 Atlético Madrid In last Tuesday's battling performance in the Copa del Rey, Malaga faced Real Madrid and at one point they had led the Galacticos 2-0. Indeed they went in for the break still with that lead. In the second half Real stepped up a gear and the game finally ended 3-2 in Real Madrid’s favour. On Saturday night Malaga faced Real's local rivals Atlético and they started the game well. Malaga playing with a relatively young side bossed the game early on, with the Argentinian Buonanotte testing the Athlético goalkeeper before Rondon saw his powerful header tipped over by Courtois on 18 minutes as Malaga looked for the opening. On the half hour Diego's deflected shot hit the bar for Atlético which was really their only first half effort on goal. The second half began

with Atlético more fired up by their new manager Diego Simione (the ex Argentinian defender, who got David Beckham sent off in the 1998 World Cup). Falcao for Atlético had the ball in the net after fouling Willy Caballero and Carzola then had to clear off the line to keep the score goalless. Substitute

Van Nistelrooy had a half chance as Malaga took control again but in the end the game fizzled out. Next weekend Malaga travel to Sporting Gijon who are struggling at the foot of the table. Report by: Scott Forbes

after a high tackle. The backs took Marbella advantage of their numerical superiority to run in three further tries and a conversion. Axarquia were rightly aggrieved five minutes later when a worse and more dangerous tackle by a Marbella back went unpunished, much to the astonishment of the crowd. The game ended 332 to Marbella, who now

Sprinter Bauge stripped of gold from the French federation. France also lose the team sprint world title as Bauge took part in the races.

Britain's Jason Kenny has been promoted to world individual sprint champion after Frenchman Gregory Bauge was suspended for drug test infringements. Bauge has been stripped of the title he won in Apeldoorn in March by world governing body the UCI. Sir Chris Hoy moves up from bronze to silver as a result of the suspension. In the team sprint, Germany are promoted from silver to gold, Britain from bronze to silver, and Australia from fourth to bronze. It is a first world gold for Kenny, who won the team sprint title at the Beijing

Olympics in 2008. "The news came as quite a surprise and whilst it's an honour to get my first senior World Championship title, I would have preferred to have achieved it under

different circumstances," said Kenny. "I am looking forward to riding the rest of the season wearing the rainbow jersey." The UCI took action after Bauge received a backdated suspension

The French cycling federation handed Bauge a 12-month suspension in response to one missed test in 18 months and a violation of rules governing rider availability for drug tests. The suspension was backdated to 23rd December 2010 and hence expired on 22nd December 2011, but the UCI has now decided that all of Bauge's results in that period – including his two world title-winning races – will be annulled.

Successful defence for Louis Oosthuizen Louis Oosthuizen retained his Africa Open title in East London, beating fellow South African Tjaart van der Walt by two strokes in a field dominated by home players. Oosthuizen had shared the overnight lead with rival Van der Walt. But the 2010 Open champion made sure of victory when he birdied the 17th, as Van der Walt could only make bogey.

Scotland's Alastair Forsyth was the top nonSouth African, finishing in fifth place, five shots off the lead. Another home favourite, double US Open champion Retief Goosen, finished third. He won the Africa Open in 2009. It was a more comfortable victory for Oosthuizen than the 2011 event, which he won after a three-way play-off.

Eric Cantona wants to be President Former Manchester United star Eric Cantona wants to run in this year's presidential election in France and is trying to gather the signatures needed to do so, the newspaper Liberation said. The former United striker, who would need the backing of 500 elected officials by the end of February to run, has sent a letter to French mayors describing himself as an "engaged citizen" and asking for their support, the left-leaning newspaper added.

Casey injury may affect his Ryder Cup prospects Paul Casey faces two months on the sidelines after dislocating his right shoulder snowboarding in Colorado. He will be unable to defend his Volvo Golf Champions title in South Africa starting on 19th January and his hopes of a Ryder Cup return are in jeopardy. "I am very frustrated as I was really looking forward to getting off to a fast start in 2012," said Casey. The world number 20 looks set to miss the Abu Dhabi Championship where he was chasing a third victory in six years. "I've always played well in the desert and the Abu

Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is one of my favourite events of the year, so I will particularly hate sitting out that one," added the English golfer. "The good news is that the experts I've seen say I don't need surgery and, having already started my rehabilitation exercises, I should be back hitting balls in a few weeks." A rib injury meant Casey failed to qualify for the last Ryder Cup and he was controversially not given a wild-card by captain Colin Montgomerie despite

being in the world's top 10 at the time. Last season he suffered from "turf toe" – a condition associated with American football or rugby players. He said: "There were times during the summer where I could barely walk round the course, never mind play the kind of golf I know I am capable of." The Arizona-based Casey lost his PGA Tour card in America after finishing outside the top 125 on the money list, but his world ranking means he is still eligible for golf's big events once he is fit.

Stewart Downing was back in training on Monday morning after his arrest on suspicion of assaulting his ex-girlfriend. The Liverpool winger looked downcast as he went through his paces just over a day after being held by police. Downing, 27, was taken into custody in the early hours of Sunday morning after an earlymorning fracas outside the Cross Keys club and pub in Yarm, south of Middlesbrough. A row between a member of the player’s group and Donna Moloney, the mother of Downing’s daughter, started inside the venue and carried on outside. It is thought Downing initially stepped in to keep the peace but he was arrested along with 32-year-old Moloney before the pair were released on bail

In the wake of the Luis Suarez affair and the alleged racial abuse of Oldham midfielder Tom Adeyemi on Friday night, the last thing Liverpool needed was an off-field incident surrounding one of their high-profile players. Liverpool would not comment on the matter on Sunday but Downing’s place in the squad for the biggest game of their season so far – the first leg of the Carling Cup semifinal at Manchester City on Wednesday – must now surely be called into question.

thierry Henry makes a dream return The 34-year-old – back on a two-month loan deal from New York Red Bulls after leaving Arsenal for Barcelona in 2007 – scored 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute to give Arsenal a 1-0 victory and a place in the fourth round against Aston Villa. Henry showed his class with a composed 78th-minute strike and Arsene Wenger had this to say: "He was already a legend here but he added just a little bit more to the whole story with that goal. "It was a little bit like a dream. It was a story you would tell young kids if you want to tell them a story about football. "Unfortunately it doesn't often happen like that in our game, but it did tonight." Henry, who scored his 227th goal for Arsenal, has signed for an initial six-and-a-half-week period which can be extended to eight weeks..

Adams, Hankey win opening matches Top seed and defending champ Martin Adams produced a clinical performance to whitewash local man Scott Mitchell 30 in just 26 minutes. The experienced defending champ recovered from a nervy opening set in which he missed a string of doubles to book his place in the last 16. It means the 55year-old veteran from Peterborough remains on course for a third successive title. Only one other player has won the title in three successive years – that was the legendary five times winner Eric Bristow. The Crafty Cockney completed the feat back in 1986. Former champion Ted Hankey moved into the last 16 with a 3-2 win over debutant Clive Barden.

Another fine `Messi´ Lionel Messi has won the Fifa Ballon d'Or prize for the best player of 2011, becoming only the fourth player in history to win the trophy three times. The Argentine forward, 24, beat Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona team-mate Xavi to the prize. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson won an award for services to football, while Messi's boss Pep Guardiola was voted coach of the year.
