democracy. He helped to write the country's constitution and founded the Alianza Popular party that eventually evolved into the Partido Popular which he founded in 1989. He then left Madrid and returned to his native Galicia to become regional premier there for the next 16 years, winning three elections with absolute majorities. After the PP lost the 2005 election to the Socialists and Galician Nationalists, Fraga returned

to Madrid to take a seat in the Upper House, where he remained until he retired in last year September because of health problems. A hero to many

in Galicia, an authoritarian relic to others, he counted the Cuban leader Fidel Castro among his friends. Continued on Page 2

Fraga began his political career in 1962 when Franco appointed him Minister of Tourism and Information. Known as a reformist, during the next seven years he tried to relax the censorship laws as well as making it easier for tourists by abolishing laws like the one banning bikinis. He was appointed ambassador to St James's in 1973, allegedly because Franco, notorious for not tolerating people who tried to his regime, “reform” wanted him out of the way. Speaking at a public event in 2011, Mr Fraga made no apology for being a minister in Franco's cabinet."One cannot choose the period of history in which one lives,'' he said. I’M BACK!

Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría said on Friday that the government intends to punish regions that fail to meet their commitments to cap their deficits and debt.

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

After five weeks in Australia I am back at my desk – somewhat jet lagged but slowly getting there. The journey is, of course, horrendous with one flight of eight hours followed by another of 12 hours but at least you get where you’re going within a reasonable space of time. Personally, I think we should all wait until we are able to do a “Star Trek” and they’ll be able to “beam me up Scotty” and I’ll be there in less than a nanosecond. Talking of which, I have a new jet lag theory for you. I have come to the conclusion that it’s not so much the change in the hour that gets you as being on an aircraft that is constantly shifting so your balance is all out – a bit like getting your sea legs on a ship. What do you think? Could that be right?

Fraga was buried in a simple ceremony in the small cemetery at Perbes, Galicia, where he and his family spent their summers. He was buried next to his wife Carmen, who died in 1996. A memorial service is to be held in the Santiago de Compostela cathedral on Saturday.

National News Rajoy, Sarkozy slam rating agencies After receiving the Collar of the Illustrious Order of the Golden Fleece from King Juan Carlos on Monday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy held a meeting with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to discuss the economic situation. The ratings agency Standard & Poor's had downgraded both countries last Friday while Moody's maintained France's triple-A rating on Monday. During the press conference after their meeting Rajoy said the ratings agencies “did not define our countries' economic policies” while Sarkozy noted that

“everyone was talking about the ratings on Friday, but today they were silent”. Rajoy said Spain supported Sarkozy's proposal for a tax on financial transactions. Asked how PP voters felt about the government's decision to raise personal income tax, Rajoy said he was sure they didn't like it and “they are right not to”. He said it had been a

Police on trial over man's death in custody Seven police officers have gone on trial in grasse, near the French riviera, over the fatal suffocation of a 22-year-old detainee, Hakim ajimi, in 2008. two who are suspected of involuntary manslaughter face three years in jail. the other five are accused of failure to assist a person in peril. ajimi had earlier resisted arrest and injured an officer, following an argument with his bank manager. the ajimi family's lawyer said ajimi was put in a police vehicle after being restrained, "unconscious or already dead".

Fuel strike suspended Nigeria's unions suspended their strike on Monday after President Goodluck Jonathan agreed to cut the cost of petrol following a week of protests. The strike was called after the price of petrol rose from 65 naira (£0.26) a litre to 140 naira when the subsidy was removed

without warning on January 1st. It will now cost 97 naira. The unions said they suspended the strike to save lives, after receiving information that the security forces had been ordered to use all means to end protests. The decision came as the police and army maintained a heavy

presence on the streets of most cities. Police in the commercial capital, Lagos, fired live bullets into the air and tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters on Monday. Army checkpoints were seen in parts of the city for the first time since the protests began a week ago. Nigeria is Africa's biggest

oil producer but it imports almost all of its refined fuel. Foreign correspondents report that many Nigerians see cheap fuel as the only benefit they get from their country's oil wealth, much of which is pocketed by corrupt officials.

UN to train Arab League monitors The United Nations has announced it will begin training Arab League observers monitoring the uprising in Syria after Arab League foreign ministers meet this weekend to discuss the progress of the mission so far. The training is to be carried out in Cairo by staff of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Many in Syria's opposition movement have said the presence of the Arab League observer mission is failing to stem

the violence as President Bashar al-Assad's government continues to crack down on opposition and some had been calling for the UN to take a greater role in monitoring the crisis. Meanwhile, the Local Co-ordination Committees, a network of opposition activists inside Syria, said another 15 people died across the country on Monday, including five defecting soldiers, two women and two children. At least 5,000

people have died since the beginning of an antigovernment uprising in March, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights says, but casualty figures are hard to verify as most foreign media are barred. On Saturday, the ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, said Arab countries should send in troops to end the bloodshed. It is the first time an Arab leader has publicly called for military intervention in Syria.

Outpatient shocked by $45m bill Outpatient Alexis Rodriguez, 28, is recovering from shock after being billed $44.8 million in error by the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York. He was one of a number of patients charged astronomical amounts because of a computer glitch, the New York Daily News reported. Billing firm

PHY Services said it had mistakenly printed the patient invoice number where the amount should go. The hospital had treated him for pneumonia, and the actual cost was no more than $300. Mr Rodriguez, an unemployed doorman, told the New York Daily News he could not believe his eyes when he opened

the envelope last week: "I think they should have somebody look over the bills before they send them out," he said. "To send out a lot of bills with numbers that big – someone could have had a heart attack." PHY Services has asked patients to ignore the bills, adding that new ones would be sent out.

Qatada wins deportation appeal

Harsh Comments aimed at Miliband Ed Miliband been accused of setting Labour on a path to "destruction" and "certain election defeat". The government announced in 2010 that public sector pay for those earning more than £21,000 would be frozen for two years, and last November said it would only rise by only 1% in the two years to 2015. However, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey made the comments after Labour's decision to support the government's pay freeze for public sector workers.

Labour leadership contest in September 2010 ahead of his brother, David, after success with trade union members and affiliated societies pushed him into first place.

McCluskey's comments were echoed by Bob Crow, general secretary of the RMT transport trade union – which is not affiliated to the party – who said Labour was now "doomed" to electoral defeat. Unions founded the Labour party and supply around 90% of the party's funds. Ed Miliband narrowly won the

Miliband said it was "a hard choice", but when faced with either protecting jobs or giving pay rises, it was "absolutely right to prioritise employment".

Chancellor Ed Balls said on Saturday that pay restraint would have to continue, given the sluggish economy, and people should not expect Labour to oppose it.

Unions not affiliated with Labour criticised the move at the weekend, accusing it of "emulating the Tories on many issues",

Radical cleric Abu Qatada has won his appeal against deportation from the UK to Jordan, at the European Court of Human Rights. However, the court said he should not face trial for terrorism on evidence obtained by the torture of others.

but Mr McCluskey's comments are the strongest yet from a direct party backer. At a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party on Monday night, Mr Miliband again defended his stance on public sector pay and said other shadow cabinet ministers would also have to take tough decisions to deliver public services with less money.

Home Secretary Theresa May said the European judges' decision was "not the end of the road". The British government can make a final appeal before the judgement becomes binding in three months' time. If it does not appeal, the cleric will have to be released from detention. Abu Qatada, whose real name is Omar Othman, is one of the most influential Islamist clerics in Europe, supporting jihadist causes.

Police Officers Bail Law Could Suspended Change

British judges have described him as "truly dangerous". Qatada has never faced trial in the UK, but has been detained without charge and had his movements restricted by a control order, a form of house arrest. The PalestinianJordanian preacher has been convicted in his absence of involvement in two major terrorism plots in Jordan, but he says that those convictions were based on evidence extracted by the torture of co-defendants and he would face similar treatment if returned. He originally fled to the UK in 1993 after being tortured twice. In the ruling, the Strasbourg court accepted that diplomatic assurances given by Jordan to the UK meant that the cleric would be protected from torture if

he were returned there. In a statement, May said: "I am disappointed that the court has made this ruling. This is not the end of the road, and we will now consider all the legal options available to us. In the meantime, Qatada will remain in detention in the UK.”

Two Lincolnshire police officers have been suspended after they were arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The officers have been released on bail while the investigation continues. A third officer, who was also arrested last Saturday, has been released without charge. A spokesperson for the force said: "Lincolnshire Police confirm that on Saturday, 14th January

2012, three Lincolnshire were Police officers arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. "One of the officers has since been released without charge. Two of the arrested officers are currently suspended from duty and on police bail pending further enquiries." Lincolnshire Police said it could not say more about the alleged offence, or whether it is being referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Arrest Made A couple have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a baby girl in Devon. The 10month-old baby was taken to hospital in Exeter on Boxing Day. She was transferred to Bristol for treatment but died on the 29th of December. The

couple who have not yet been named, have been released on police bail until July. Police said that the man was previously arrested on suspicion of assault and causing grievous bodily harm, but was re-arrested on suspicion of murder.

A change to the law on bail is a step closer, following a campaign led by the family of murdered nurse Jane Clough. Clough, 26, was stabbed 71 times by her partner Jonathan Vass outside Blackpool Victoria Hospital in July 2010. Vass was on bail accused of raping her at the time of the attack. The government has now tabled an amendment to a bill in Parliament which would allow prosecutors to challenge a judge's decision to grant bail. Currently, there is no mechanism to challenge a crown court judge's decision to give a defendant bail.

Victim: Jane Clough

prosecutors to appeal against a crown court judge's bail ruling at the High Court. Prime Minister David Cameron gave his support to the Cloughs at Prime Minister's Questions last week, saying there was a "strong case for changing the law".

Appeals can be made against magistrates' bail decisions.

Ms Clough's parents have said they believe their daughter would still be alive if the Crown Prosecution Service had had the right to challenge bail decisions in 2010.

The amendment, to the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill, would allow

Vass pleaded guilty to murder and is currently serving a minimum term of 30 years.

Rhino Horn eft A man has been charged with the theft of two replica rhino horns from the Natural History Museum in Tring, Hertfordshire. Darren Bennett, 40, of Battenberg Road, Leicester, was charged with burglary after a break-in at the museum on the 27th of August last year. Bennett is due to appear in court at a date yet to be set. Museum staff had replaced the real £240,000 horns with ones made of resin before the burglary took place. Real rhino horn can fetch £60,000 per kg in the Far East where it is prized for its supposed medicinal qualities. LONDON

3D Faces Visitors to London's Science Museum are being invited to have their faces scanned in 3D. Data from participants will be used by three hospitals and the Institute to improve disfigured patients and reconstructive surgery. Visitors, who must first sign a consent form so that their data can be used for research, will also have the option of rendering their 3D faces in zebra and crocodile skin, just for fun.

Britain's most dangerous and notorious criminals can be kept behind bars for the rest of their lives, European judges have ruled. Killer Jeremy Bamber, Peter Moore and Douglas Vinter lost their appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) submitted by their lawyer in December 2009 arguing that whole-life tariffs condemning prisoners to die in jail amounted to "inhuman or degrading treatment". The decision has been made that a whole-life tariff is not "grossly disproportionate" and in each case London's High Court had"decided that an all-life tariff was required, relatively recently and following a fair and detailed consideration", the judges ruled. Bamber has already attacked the court's decision issuing a statement that says: "If the state wishes to have a death penalty, then they should be honest and re-introduce hanging. Instead, this political decision that I

must die in jail is the death penalty using old age or infirmity as the method. It is a method whereby I'm locked in a cell until I'm dead – no matter if it should take 70 or 80 years to happen. I shall be dead the next time I leave jail. This despite that the trial judge said 25 years was punishment enough for a crime I did not commit. Both the trial judge and the Lord Chief Justice set my minimum tariff as 25 years. Quite why the Home Secretary felt that I should die in jail when the judges felt otherwise is a mystery. To then be told by the European Court that it was reasonable and fair for the Home Secretary to resentence me to die in jail is quite extraordinary." He added that the ruling "does not really surprise me. It is no different to the injustice of my conviction. The evidence upon which the Crown have built their case is no longer credible, yet my imprisonment must continue until I'm dead, as evidence of my innocence cannot be disclosed because the Criminal Cases Review Commission have refused to request it from

Essex Police. I will continue to campaign to prove my innocence and I am hoping that this will happen before my death sentence is carried out." Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke, has said the government has been "fighting the case vigorously and defending the principle of the wholelife tariff". Whole life tarrif prisoners’ crimes are deemed to be so serious that, under present law, it would be practically unheard of for them to be released from prison. They can only be released on the say so of the Justice secretary on compassionate grounds if, for instance they are suffering from a terminal illness or are seriously incapacitated. The infamous Bamber, now 51-years-old, was sentenced to his whole life tarrif for the murders of his adoptive parents, June and Neville, his sister Sheila Caffell and her then 6-yearold twin sons Daniel and Nicholas at their farmhouse in Essex. He has

his always protested innocence of the crimes but has been behind bars for over 25 years now since his conviction in October 1986. He claims that his sister, a diagnosed schizophrenic, was the one that carried out the murders before killing herself. He has already lost two appeals against his conviction. One of the other felons in this latest case, Douglas Vinter was released from prison after serving nine years for the 1995 murder of work colleague Carl Edon, 22. Three years later he stabbed wife Anne White four times and strangled her, before being given a whole-life order. Peter Moore was convicted of four counts of murder in 1996 after killing four gay

men for his gratification.

sexual

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "The Government strongly welcomes this decision. We argued vigorously that there are certain prisoners whose crimes are so appalling that they should never become eligible for parole. We are pleased that the European court has upheld the whole life tariff as a legitimate sentence in British courts."

Nine people were killed and 20 injured in a blaze which engulfed a house in south London.

Marta's murderer gets 20 years A Seville court has sentenced Miguel Carcaño, 21, to 20 years in jail for the murder of 17-year-old Marta del Castillo, whose body has still not been found three years after the crime. The self-confessed killer – who has changed his story several times – was found guilty of killing his exgirlfriend with an ashtray, then disposing of the body with the help of other people. Three other suspects in the case have been acquitted, including Carcaño's stepbrother and the latter's girlfriend. The prosecution had asked for 52 years for Carcaño for the murder, rape and damaging the moral integrity of Marta's family. Her father, Antonio del Castillo, said after

hearing the verdict on Friday that the court's decision "makes no sense," as it acquits three out of the four suspects, making it seem as if Carcaño killed Marta and got rid of her body by himself. Police have always suspected he is protecting an adult who helped dispose of the body while Carcaño himself insists he does not know where the body is. The judge in charge of the case, Francisco de Asís

Molina, also ordered Carcaño to pay €340,000 in damages to Marta's family. The prosecuting attorney had asked for an additional €616,319 to cover the costs of the fruitless police search.

English Cemetery gets help with weeds Eighty students from Malaga University's Department of Historiographical Sciences and Techniques spent several hours on Friday weeding the English Cemetery under the supervision of their professor Alicia Marchant, who is also the deputy chairman of the Fundacion Cementerio Ingles. Before they started, Prof Marchant asked them to

A cold New Year guarding fruit Once again the scourge of finca owners – the robafrutas (fruit thieves) – are forcing them either to hire people to protect their crops if they can afford it or to camp out themselves. One producer of avocados on the Axarquia coast, Miguel Perez, spent most nights this Christmas and New Year sleeping in his car – with a bocadillo and the radio on – at his finca two kilometres from his home. Other finca owners are hiring watchmen at the rate of €4 per hectare while others have approached local hunters to keep their eyes open on hunting days. The thieves are active both night and day – many fincas are in isolated areas – and Perez said they don't care how lean the pickings are. Some can earn up to €1,000 from avocados stolen before the picking begins “but they're quite happy with €50's worth of avocados from trees that are already being picked,” Perez said.

leave the clover because “it gives the cemetery a very British greenery”. The help came as the Foundation was studying the need to limit the cemetery's opening times because there is no full-time gardener or enough volunteers to maintain it. The students also collected pieces of marble and piled them near the graves they had broken off “to be repaired later when we have the proper tools,”

N

EWS IN BRIEF

Prof Marchant said. Former British consul and current chairman of the Foundation, Bruce McIntyre said the help “was faboulous”. Although the cemetery is in the process of being declared a site of cultural interest which will qualify it for financial aid, Mr McIntyre stressed that it needs help now because “maintenance expenses are high and help has still not arrived”.

The body was little more than a skeleton, but its clothes contained papers identifying it as a 76-year-old dutch woman, identified only as S.L.V.h., whose family reported her missing in Benalmadena in 2010. police are waiting for the autopsy to give the cause of death which was not immediately apparent because of the body’s advanced state of decomposition. Memo from

Voice Madrid

Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

A new approach front woman for Rajoy. She handles the press very politely but firmly, welcoming their questions, and speaks her lines spontaneously and fluently. I enjoy watching her perform, whereas I used to die of embarrassment when De la Vega crossed my TV screen.

K

ing Juan Carlos has been up to his tricks again. He somehow manoeuvred the current and three former prime ministers into posing with him after the ceremony on Monday during which he bestowed the Collar of the Most Illustrious Order of the Golden Fleece on French President Nicolas Sarkozy. It's a photo for the nation's historical archives. There is no love lost between former PM Felipe Gonzalez and current PM Mariano Rajoy but the real miracle took place on the other side of the King – former PMs Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and José María Aznar literally can't stand the sight of each other, yet there they are, smiling sweetly for the camera. Gonzalez hates Aznar just as passionately and Aznar reciprocates the feeling. To his credit, Rajoy, who doesn't particularly like either Zapatero or Gonzalez, seems to be a man incapable of deep feelings of hatred for his fellow men, although he doesn't suffer fools gladly. The King must still be having a good chuckle about that one.

T

he change in approach is at its most palpable when we look at the current deputy PM, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria – called simply Soraya hereinafter – and Zapatero's first deputy PM, María Teresa Fernandez de la Vega – called De la Vega hereinafter. The latter was stick thin, very into colour coordination and spiky hairstyles and so wrinkled at 52, her age when she was appointed, that she’s either a very heavy smoker or too fond of sunbathing. Soraya is small and round, with a skin many a 20-year-old can envy, quite sober in her dress but with an unruly mane of hair. De la Vega seemed to find it hard to smile – Soraya grins and laughs quite unselfconsciously. But the biggest difference is that De la Vega always seemed uncomfortable when addressing the press, speaking very woodenly as if from a script she appeared to have memorized beforehand and obviously dying to be somewhere else. Soraya seems to love her job as spokeswoman – some would say

R

ajoy may have inherited a very bad economic situation from Zapatero – the worst PM since the country's return to democracy for some, the victim of the worst economic crisis since the 1930s for others – but what state did his predecessors leave the country in?

A

dolfo Suarez (1977-1981) inherited a host of political and social problems and an energy crisis from the Franco regime. He had to cope with a galloping inflation of 43 per cent while trying to raise a per capita income which was 20 per cent below the European average. Unemployment stood at 13.5 per cent – a paltry 1.7 million in comparison with today's – and to cap it all, the Basque terrorist group ETA killed 210 people between 1979 and 1981. The military felt he wasn't doing enough to defeat the group, which forced him to resign in January 1981 to avoid a coup. Some 200 Guardia Civil invaded Parliament on February 23rd, the day his successor was being elected. Even so, he will be remembered for the many reforms he carried out in one short year after the King appointed him PM in July 1976.

C

alvo Sotelo, who took over from Suarez, hardly had time to make a dent in the country's problems before the 1982 general election. Inflation continued to rise, as did unemployment, which drove the country into a recession.

T

hat was what Felipe Gonzalez inherited when he became the country's first Socialist PM since the Civil War. He carried out many social reforms and took Spain into Nato and the EU but left an unemployment rate of 20 per cent (3.5 million), a bankrupt Social Security and a huge public deficit and debt for José María Aznar to deal with. In his first four years, Aznar reduced unemployment to 13.6 per cent, which fell to 11.5 per cent in his second administration. That was when the fruits of his good accountancy began to be felt and Zapatero inherited a healthy economy, which he squandered by concentrating on progressive social reforms, leaving the economy to take care of itself.

This European mess

T

he ratings agencies continue to bash us. Standard & Poor’s has threatened Spain with a further downgrade after it dropped the country’s sovereign rating two notches last Friday from AA– to A. Spain was among nine European nations that saw their ratings slashed on that bleak Friday the 13th. The agency says that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy must move quickly to implement his job reform package or else face the consequences. Now Rajoy says he has a plan and will instruct the European Commission later this month about what it needs to do to ensure that the continent gets it finances in gear, and keep the euro from being defeated at the hands of a few financial analysts whose dream is to see the European currency collapse. The Partido Popular (PP) government hasn’t said what type of plan it has nor has it revealed the ace that we all hope it has up its sleeve to solve Spain’s economic problems. Yes, we do hope Rajoy has some secret plan that he has yet to unveil because, if not, he will make us all look like fools.

B

ut on the bigger stage, there is a frightening warning from Italian Minister Mario Monti which seems to be an accurate forecast for Europe’s future. In an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel last week, Monti cautioned that if Brussels – or better yet Berlin, because Angela Merkel is calling all the shots – doesn’t do its part to help financially-strapped nations get their economies in gear the threat of a populist movement could overtake the entire continent and shatter the European dream. Speaking specifically about his country, the Italian leader told Merkel that his own countrymen are losing patience with the sacrifices they must endure at Germany’s expense.

T

here does appear to be an antiGerman movement growing in countries such as Greece and Romania where demonstrators in Bucharest clashed with police over the weekend over austerity measures while demanding early elections. It is true that Germany and France are at fault for not allowing the cash cow European Central Bank to step in and offer some relief to teetering nations such as Spain. But there are some problems within that marriage. While Merkel continues to insist on drastic public spending cuts for troubled

EU members, France’s sovereign debt rating was also downgrade by S&P, which ignited anger among Frenchmen who believed their country’s sterling rating was protected.

B

ack home, the PP is telling local regional governments that they must cut their public expenditures but at the same time assuring them that Madrid won’t allow any of them to default. Any default, says Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro, is a default for Spain. Rajoy’s principal auditor told regional financial and economic chiefs last week that the central government will come up with some measures to help bail out any region. In other words, Montoro suggested drumming up a type of Hispano-bond that could be issued by the Banco de España along the lines of the European-bond idea that Merkel refuses to take up. Where the central government will get this money to finance this scheme is anyone’s guess. But it seems to be a remedy that Rajoy could apply locally and show Brussels that it could work for the entire continent. Nevertheless, time is of the essence.

T

he main factor that comes into play is moving quickly to create jobs. Rajoy revealed over the weekend that 5.4 million Spaniards are out of work. At the same time, young people who are not active in the workforce are not paying into the social security system and stem to lose many months, if not years, of contribution quotas for their own retirement.

Y

es, we are stuck in the middle of a chocolate mess. Europe is a democracy and its leaders should act like a mini-congress and put a range of proposed measures up for a vote rather than allowing Merkel and Sarkozy to run the show. The French leader, who hasn’t said whether he will run for reelection this year, is dropping in the polls while his main rival, the Socialist François Hollande, is beginning to look more appealing to voters. But at the same time, the French right is also gaining ground with the anti-euro Marine Le Pen climbing up in the polls. Whoever wins the race in the coming months will no doubt split the German-French decisionmaking process and divide the continent. Which side will Mariano Rajoy take?

Spanish Property Tax – Warning, the tax office is looking for you! Are you a non-resident of Spain? Do you have a property here? If so, then each year you need to pay the revised property tax that has recently been strengthened due to Spain’s economic difficulties. If you haven’t paid your property or income taxes, you may be liable for a considerable fine. Antonio Diaz, Solicitor at De Cotta Law in Coin Written by Here, legal tax expert, Antonio Diaz of De Cotta Law explains the tax and the law. In accordance with Spanish law on taxes for non-residents, all nonresidents who have a property in Spain have to pay income tax on the property known as “La Renta”. This tax applies to all property owned by non residents across all Spanish territories. You are considered a non-resident if you spend less than 183 days per year in Spain. However if you are not registered as a resident and declare your income tax here (which is obligatory if you live in Spain full time) then you will be considered to be a non fiscal resident and liable for this tax even if in actual fact you permanently reside in Spain.

Property Income Tax All non-residents have to pay the Property Income Tax as follows: a) Income from Lettings at 24% of the gross rent received with no deductions allowable (up to end of 2011). b) Now, with the revision of the Tax Law 2/2011, from the 4th of March, non residents can offset many of the legitimate expenses against income; for instance, water & electricity, insurance, interest on mortgage, community and rates (IBI). c) Deemed income on property, when the property is used privately by the owners there is a deemed income assessed at 2% or 1.1% of the ratable value (Valor Catastral that is stated on the IBI receipt) depending on the municipality and the

amount of time you have owned the property. This deemed income is taxed also at 24% and the amount due to be paid must be lodged with the tax authorities before the 31st December of the year subsequent to declaration.

Wealth Tax There is also another property tax known as Wealth Tax or ‘Patrimonio’ tax. So, now, in 2012 owners must declare their tax obligation relating to the year 2011. However, it is worth noting that whereas La Renta has to be paid by all non resident property owners, the obligation to pay the wealth tax will affect only owners that have properties worth more than €700,000, or

€1,400,000 in the case of a home being in the shared names of a couple. The value of housing is based on that stated as the purchase price on the deeds of sale or the assessed value shown on the IBI bill, whichever is greater. Generally speaking the wealth tax is calculated by applying 0.20% of the purchase price up to €167.129,45, as declared on the Deed of Purchase. Over that amount, the calculation applied depends on the amount of the purchase price declared in accordance with the percentage scale of the Tax Office which is stated in the Spanish Wealth Tax Law. The Wealth Tax covers the full tax year and not just the period of ownership.

Be warned and aware We have evidence that

the tax authorities in Spain are investigating all property owners, resident and non resident to make sure that owners are complying with relevant property and income taxes. If you are a resident, then you too must be aware that income taxes and property taxes are being scrutinised and compliance is compulsory. Many residents and non residents of Spain have already received letters from the tax authorities confirming that if payment is not duly made, the authorities may initiate a grievance procedure for the unpaid tax together with a surcharge (between 5 and 20%) plus interest for late payment. Finally, if the taxpayer does not pay when required, owners could face seizure of their bank

The lecture will be held in the hall of the Ark Christian Fellowship, at Las Rampas, Fuengirola. The talk will be given by Chris Beckett, who will talk about slavery, its place in history and its effect on the growth of the British Empire – he will use graphics to enhance his talk. He will also be telling his audience about the horrors of the “Slave Triangle”. Other avenues covered will be how the slave trade created institutions that effected the growth of the British Empire – with many fortunes being made and then lost – plus the new cities that were developed as a result.

A joint art exhibition based on inspiration and impressions from travels in Morocco is being held by Margit Björklund (from Sweden) and Don Widdall (from England). Both artists have in their own way captured the mood and styles of the Moroccan people, the landscape and architecture and the light and vivid colours.

Finally Chris will explain why the riches of the slave trade carried the ”seed” of its own destruction – and the legacy of the slave trade for us all now. Doors will open at 16.00 and the talk will commence at 16.30 for approximately an hour. Attendance is free to U3A members, with a small

charge of €5 to nonmembers. U3A lectures are designed to give people an opportunity to meet likeminded folk while learning more about our history. For further information contact Roy Futcher on 952662511 or look at the website on your computer www.u3acostadelsol.org.

The exhibition is at Dibleys Tapas Bar, C./ Marbella 9, La Cala de Mijas (opposite St. Teresa’s church). Opening hours are daily from 11am to 9pm until February 13th. Also for art lovers, Welsh artist Sian Kirby is showing some of her recent work in a solo exhibition at The Sussex Bar in La Cortijera, La Cala de Mijas. The exhibition runs until 13th March and can be viewed daily from 10am to 7pm. For further details ring 952493409

Seeking good home DAVID THE DOGMAN: Beth is a galgo cross, she was very close to death due to starvation, when she came into Fama. She is a very sweet girl and yearns for love. She is still a bit nervous, but each day she is becoming a little more relaxed and she has now even started to play with the other dogs. Beth would certainly make someone the perfect pet. If anyone would like to meet Beth or get more information please contact Pat on 620 354 885 or visit our website on www.f-a-ma.net

Unfortunately Beth is only one of many dogs who are looking for a good home. Fama’s policy is never to put down a healthy dog – they have a home for life or until they are adopted.

Chocolate made for human consumption can cause death in dogs. Dogs are sensitive to a class of chemicals called methylxanthines. Caffeine and theobromine are members of that family. Dogs simply cannot metabolise and excrete methylxanthines as efficiently as humans. The half life of those compounds in the human body is in the order of two to three hours, in the dog it is more like 18 hours. In a dog the compounds are taken up by the liver and transmitted via the bile

into the intestine. They are then converted back into the original methylxanthines for another circuit through the animal. This repeats itself a number of times and instead of getting rid of the substances the dog keeps repoisoning itself. There are many formulations of chocolate with varying amounts of caffeine and theobromine. The lethal dose of sweet milk chocolate for a dog is 2oz per kg of bodyweight. For a 5kg dog this would be about 280gms. A lethal dose of milk chocolate for a 25kgs dog would be

Chocolate Danger to Dogs

about 1.4 kgs. Dark chocolate is at least 10 times as lethal. A 25 kilograms dog could die from five ounces. Symptoms include vomiting, hyperactivity, restlessness, hypersensitivity to touch (a dog will jump when touched), very rapid heartbeat and rapid breathing rate. A loss of control of leg muscles, muscle tremor seizures, general weakness, coma and finally death follow. In my opinion it would be a tragic mistake to encourage a dog to

develop a taste for chocolate. A small dog left alone in a house might well follow his nose to the goodies and commit suicide. Listen to David ‘s show on Talk Radio Europe on Saturday 10am till 11. Art exhibition Debra Coleman and Regina Staal, two popular artists, return for their second exhibition at the Estepona Port Business Centre on the 15th January until the 14th February. This first exhibition of 2012 will display works by two

According to the National Council on Ageing study, hearing-impaired people who do not wear hearing aids are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, paranoia and emotional turmoil, than people who do wear hearing aids. Those who do are more likely to be involved in social activities, etc. and most hearing aid users report significant benefits in family relationships, mental health, and other areas that affect the quality of their lives. In all categories, family members observe even greater benefits from the use of hearing aids than do the users themselves. Many concerns regarding hearing-aids relate to cost and vanity, but these can be overcome with counselling and family support. Family members should be aware of the consequences of untreated hearing loss as well as the benefits of using hearing aids. If they suspect that a relative has a hearing loss they should actively encourage the person to seek appropriate

screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Sontec Audiologists have over 10 years’ experience in counselling patients and families about the effects of hearing loss and the best methods to manage each individual’s situation. The first step in this process is to obtain a hearing evaluation. With the aid of the very latest technology, vast improvements have been made; and the miniaturisation of the components has contributed greatly to patient satisfaction. Find out more at Sontec Hearing Centres. Call 902 40 1234 for an appointment. Still suffering in silence? Test your hearing: Answer these questions to make a quick assessment of your hearing. 1. Has a friend or relative mentioned that you might have a hearing problem? 2. Do people seem to mutter or speak too quickly? 3. Is listening to a phone

conversation difficult? 4. Do you sometimes miss hearing the doorbell or phone ring? 5. Do you become tired or irritable when having to concentrate on a long conversation? 6. Do you find it difficult to hear well in a group, restaurant or crowd? 7. Do you often ask people to repeat themselves or miss key words in conversations? 8. Do you need to turn up the volume on the TV louder than others consider necessary? 9. When talking with others, does background noise irritate you? 10. Do you have difficulty in finding exactly

where a sound is coming from? The results: If you answered yes to one or more of these questions you should contact Sontec Hearing Centres for a thorough hearing assessment and evaluation, with a nocost obligation. The diagnostic hearing assessment will find the exact extent and nature of the hearing loss. The above test is a guide and must always be understood as such.

One of our readers has asked us to warn dog walkers in particular (and everyone else in general) that the wonderful warm and dry weather we have been enjoying has brought out that annual nuisance – the processionary caterpillar – earlier this year. Apparently they have been seen coming down from the pine trees in the Monda area so are inevitably on the move elsewhere too. There are still some people who are unaware of the toxic nature of these caterpillars, which are known as procesionaria del pino in Spain (Latin name Thaumetopeoa pityocampa ). They nest in cotton-wool-like cocoons in the pine trees, gorge themselves on the pine needles and then descend in snake-like skeins before burying themselves in the ground to change into harmless moths. The processions can measure several metres in

length and, of course, a wriggling “stick” can be quite fascinating to dogs out for a walk in the woods – and to children or unwary adults. These apparently innocuous creatures are covered in fine barbed hairs which cause inflammation, irritation and, in extreme cases, anaphylactic shock in humans. A painful rash

can last for several weeks. Much worse is the effect on a curious canine whose nose pokes into the hairs or who picks them up on its paws. Once the hairs come into contact with the dog's lips or tongue then the only course of action to to get to the vet without delay. A disturbing number of pets have lost parts of their tongues and even died after a run-in with the processionary caterpillar. So be warned – stay away from pine woods with your pets until later in the year when the caterpillars will be safely underground and keep a wary eye out for those tell-tale nests in urban areas, they are not confined to the campo!

Road works Following the opening of Bishop Caruana Road, an assessment of the vehicular and pedestrian movements in the area, including Europort Road, has been undertaken. Arising from this, two new zebra crossings will be put in place, one at the northern end of Bishop Caruana Road close to Bishop Canilla House, and the other by the northern end of Europort Road before it reaches the roundabout. Works to provide the necessary infrastructure for

such crossings began on Monday January 9th and will continue for a period not exceeding ten days. During this time, there will be some minor traffic flow restrictions whilst the necessary excavations and pavement alterations are undertaken. The Government would like to take this opportunity to apologise to the general public for any inconvenience these works might cause to them.

Countless cacti in the snow …

Written by Jean Joss

Until this week there wasn’t much of the cold white stuff falling in the Sierra de las Nieves but just outside the village of Casarabonela there is a thriving botanical garden dedicated to these prickly plants.

T

he Mora y Bravard collection of cacti and other succulents contains around 11,000 plants belonging to 45 botanical families and some 2,500 different species – the biggest collection in Europe and, apparently, one of the best in the world. Originally the brainchild of Edwige Bravard and Joan Gabriel Mora who lived in Mallorca until they moved to Casarabonela in 1995, it was donated to the town hall

and the purpose-built gardens and greenhouses to display it were opened to the public last spring.

wither and die. And the range of shapes, sizes and shades on display here is staggering, from the huge and spikey to the bushy and prickly, from sculptural twists to tiny florets.

A

s anyone who has ever tried gardening here in Andalucia knows, plants such as cacti and succulents are indispensable in our blisteringly hot summers as they retain moisture (frequently being composed of about 80 per cent water) and can survive in July and

T August while ill-adapted shrubs and flowers all too often give up in the heat,

he garden is cleverly laid out on the hillside with stone paths and raised beds. The view across the valley of the village sprawled across the towering mountains is equally beautiful. Plants from all corners of the world are arranged in these beds – Southern USA and Mexico, South America, Canary Islands and Morocco, South Africa, East Africa, India and Madagascar, to name only some. And flowers can be seen all year round because different species bloom at different seasons – often small but brightly coloured splashes of colour on what was apparently an impenetrable sea of spikes.

O

n the top level are the greenhouses where the plants are distributed according to their countries of origin. They creep, climb, curve, shoot upwards, bend into contorted shapes; some resemble stones, others snakes – there is no end to their variety. On a raised display area behind glass are

tiny delicate cacti looking like sea creatures in an aquarium in a variety of coral-like greys, whites and pinks against the small gravel.

T

here is a purpose-built visitors' centre with information and guides (the day we went we met the charming Maria who spoke excellent English and was only to happy to take us round) as well as a small shop, meeting rooms and a scientific department. You can also buy a variety of cacti and succulents to take home for your own garden. A cafeteria-restaurant is, I think, only in the planning stage but the gardens are only a couple of minutes away from a very nice local venta serving a good menu del dia, so you won’t have to go hungry or thirsty!

C

asarabonela is off the main Guadalhorce motorway (A-357) up to Ardales, Campillos and Ronda. From the Malaga direction drive northwards until you get to the junction of the A-354 and turn left through Zalea, continuing until you see the town in front of you. The gardens are on the left of this road just past the large venta, Casaron de Bonela. There are quite obvious brown tourist signs from the main highway. If you fancy a scenic circular route, and have the time, then go back via Alozaina and Coin (or drive up that way if you prefer). This route is even more spectacular for views of the countryside and the mountains.

“Sueña Casanova” Playing in Málaga The stage play “Sueña Casanova”, will be on at the Teatro Echegaray in Malaga from the 20th to the 21st of January. The play is set in the prison cells of the Doge’s Palace where Giacomo Casanova is serving his sentence. With him is Count Gaetano a visionary and a mason. And he knows the only way out of the horrible dungeons. They make a deal: Gaetano will tell Giacomo where the exit is; Casanova, in turn, will have to dream about and remember his love adventures across Europe.

The play was written by Fernando Arrabal in 1967, inspired by the magnificent painting by Hieronymus Bosch. Behind this plot, there is a veiled criticism of religious dogmatism.

mong the paintings on display are an important series of portraits of Carmen Thyssen that represent a type of homage paid by the artist to her patron. They are accompanied by images of the Baroness’s son Borja Thyssen, her daughters Carmen and Sabina and several depictions of the Baroness’s husband, the late Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza. In addition to the portraits that form the core of the

Like the painting by Hieronymus Bosch, Arrabal’s work can be interpreted as an allegorical tale about the spiritual transformation of the individual impelled by desire.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

J. Edgar

T

Director: Clint Eastwood Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Judi Dench Leonardo DiCaprio’s baby face from Titanic days may be ageing quite gracefully, but is still young enough to allow him – with careful camera work – to play J Edgar Hoover, the infamous founder of the FBI, from his late teens. Six to seven hours each day spent in the makeup chair having prosthetics applied then enables the actor to play J Edgar up to his death at the age of 77 and look convincing, in what is described as a very powerful performance. The movie charts Hoover’s rise to power in the 1920s and

the corruption and brutality he employed to make sure that his grip on power never weakened until his death in 1972. He is still held in reverence by the FBI and others despite the emergence of unsavoury information about how he abused his powers, kept exhaustive files on many innocent people and was prepared to use blackmail at every turn. Hoover was a lifelong bachelor, as was his assistant Clyde Tolson. The two are buried side by side

in Washington’s Congressional Cemetery and the movie takes a look at the relationship without resolving the rumours about his sexuality. But it is more about Hoover’s obsession with power and secrets and his increasing paranoia than his love life. And it also looks at the relationship he had with his toxic mother Anna – a powerful performance from Judi Dench. American Hollywood watchers reckon that this is the one that DiCaprio is

pinning his hopes on for Oscar glory. The actor has been nominated three times(twice for best actor in Scorsese’s The Aviator and in Blood Diamond, and once as best supporting actor, aged 19, for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape). But George Clooney and his movie The Descendents picked up best film and actor at the Golden Globes on Sunday – The Globes have been seen as a shoo-in for Oscar glory, so Leo might be feeling a bit worried this week.

e Beatles best has to be White

he other night I was watching the end of the original“Hairspray”, and before I knew it I was bopping around and singing along with it. There are some movies that when you’re flicking through the channels and you see it, you just can’t turn it off – Hairspray is one of them. However, it has to be the original version, as the remake, didn’t seem to have the same magic.

T

he 1988 version is a cult classic, filled with cheesy humour and great 60s music. The remake seems too serious and dark – which is sad as it lost its cultness. To be honest, I can’t remember much of the remake, apart from John Travolta dressed as a woman – who seemed be enjoying himself far too much. The new cast lineup did their best, but how were they ever supposed to beat the performances of Sonny Bono, Divine, Debby Harry, Pia Zadora, Mink Stole and of course Ricki Lake?

By Abigail Tyler

The Beatles left very deep footprints, and, love them or hate them, they are a cultural force to be reckoned with. The song writing is compelling and thought-provoking, slightly humorous, and well written. The music ranges from extremely simple to mega-complex. This album really showcases the individual band members’ talents and offers a treat to anyone who cares to listen. Odds are, you've probably heard at least some of these songs. It is a massive, sprawling masterwork occasionally verging on complete collapse. The Beatles were never afraid to push the envelope to breaking point and beyond: The White Album is a case-in-point. As a historical document, The

White Album can be heard as the "come down" from the Summer of Love – a testament to the idealism and disillusion of 1968, the year which saw both the murder of Martin Luther King and the escalation of the Vietnam War. The minimalist cover artwork can be seen as the inevitable antidote to the colourful and florid excesses of Flower Power fashion. The White Album is a historical moment

preserved in song. Matching the anguish and uncertainty of the era is the anguish and schizophrenia of the Beatles’ music. It's impossible to pick a

favourite song from the album – favourites seem to vary with mood and season. "Happiness is a Warm Gun" has always been one of my favourite tracks, due to the many changes in tempo and unusual lyrics. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La Da" is a super fun and brilliant song. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is an instant classic. "Blackbird" is soothing and gentle. "Rocky Racoon" is dark but brilliant. "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" and "Helter Skelter" are both loud, raunchy, and fun. "Mother Nature's Son" and "Good Night" can both be lullabies. There are so many wonderful songs from this album, it's just too tough to pick any one out to recommend.

should – here is the plot. Despite the whole emphasis on huge hair and doo-wop music, there is actually a deeper story that has substance. Ricki Lake plays Tracy Turnblad (dreadful surname!) who has become a regular on a local dance show. She's an instant local celebrity and adored, but despite this, she cannot ignore the fact that coloured people are never allowed on the show with white kids--even though all the music has roots in the African-American culture. When Penny, her dippy friend begins dating a coloured boy, Tracy cannot just ignore the segregation even though it would have been the safest thing for her to do in the early 60s where the movie is set.

W

hile John Waters' style is one of the best things about the movie, in another way it's one of the worst. In his earlier films, the content is generally distracting enough for the audience not to really notice the rather boring directorial style; but this film doesn't have sufficient, and the style is a big distraction at first.

W

ater’s himself appears in a small cameo in the movie playing the psychologist. The message regarding segregation may well be a good one; but really it's not all that interesting and isn't put forward particularly well – and that's where, for me, the film falls down. But overall, I do like the style of the film and appreciate the ideas behind it – it’s a great little toetapping movie.

I

love Christopher Walken, I think he is a brilliant actor and a great dancer – but he wasn’t that memorable in “Hairspray”. I won’t go into it about Zac Efron, but all I will say is – he hasn’t exactly come very far from “High School Musical”.

You are about to seal an important deal whether it be in your personal or professional life, a new chapter is about to show its true potential. There is a greater sense of overall peace and happiness rolling your way and this has to do with personal satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. If you have a tight group of individuals you can rely on and trust you will find that your success is linked to a team spirit that will take your dreams further down the road.

The key to success and overall happiness comes down to your ability to be able to adapt new information and data as it is revealed to you. To take a leap of faith as necessary and forge yourself ahead as the leader in a situation. You will be feeling a greater sense of power and influence and will be experiencing greater respect in a business or personal matter. Your opponents will just lay down their arms.

You have been rising to responsibilities this month and this in turn has increased your understanding of a current situation. There is an opportunity to deal with a giant piece of your past and it will feel as though your head is in total alignment with your heart. The thing is at the moment you are not afraid of a good old fight, you are rising up to find your ‘stride’. There is no turning back now; it is your time to shine, so expect some challenges too. If you are willing to face a certain personal shadow, this will lead to unthinkable breakthroughs. Are you ready to put it all on the line? The biggest danger you face is your own impatience for something to happen and even though you have put the hard work in, patience is now required to put everything in order. Your focus is on making sure that your home base or your foundations are solid and those you depend upon and love feel appreciated. You are constantly underestimating your potential and this can at times get in the way of all that you are destined to become. You have dreams and one that is waiting to be born, rise up and pursue the path of self promotion and you will find yourself in liberating territory. This week focus on what needs to be done, making sure that you do not overlook important facts or feelings. Then get as much rest as you can for this is a busy time.

Personal temptations can make it easy to lose your way but you are being plummeted to a position of power which has reduced the influence that these distractions can have over you. Even if you have to ‘wing it’ you will be expected to hold your own and take the lead. As long as you show that you are ready to be September 23rd - taken seriously then you will experience a new level of success, in love and life October 22nd generally.

You are willing to stand tall and fight for all the right things under the right reasoning this week, others will see your true inner strength and determination. This actually acts as a warning to others, a pre-emptive strike to preserve the peace. Harnessing this raw energy within you will allow you to influence the lives of those around you so that you can lay the boundaries and guidelines necessary for harmonious relationships with those close to you.

SAGITTARIUS Prepare to expand your wings for your time has come and you will have to rely on your instincts and intuitive abilities. Things are not always as they appear and this is one of those occasions, there is a lot more to it than meets the eye, remain sharp and aware for these are exciting times. There is more you can do and accomplish November 22nd - and something is there for the taking. The main thing is it is also fun, so let your hair December 21st down and enjoy the ride. Thoughts may grind you to a halt this week and this could be based upon misunderstanding a situation or assumptions. You can keep them locked up in there which will only create more ache or you can open that cage and set them free for good, clear up an issue by clarifying and confronting the person, do not let things December 22nd - brew, that is the key, as this could leave you feeling drained. Expect the unexpected January 19th and challenge any concept that doesn’t feel right.

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

This is a networking week and a time to forge new alliances, a social energy is about you, the sort that allows you to link family and friends together for a mutual purpose. There is no time for self doubt and do not second guess yourself or the decisions you have made. Do not allow yourself to become side tracked, stay focused on the tasks and challenges ahead as your life is speeding up at the moment. Attack them in an orderly manner and all will flow smoothly.

Hair today! Some of you may already know that hair is pelo. El tiene pelo negro - He has black hair. Ella tiene pelo rubio - she has blonde hair. Es pelirrojo - He's a red-head. Es pelirroja she's a red-head. However, as well as the everyday use there are lots of expressions and idioms with pelo, some of which we will have a look at today so we can sprinkle them in our conversation and sound knowledgeable. (Which of course we are!) Cortarse el pelo means to have one's hair cut. Voy a cortarme el pelo mañana - I'm going to have my hair cut tomorrow. Tienes que cortarte el pelo - You have to have your hair cut. If you manage to do something by the skin of your teeth, you do it por los pelos in Spanish. Pasó el examen por los pelos - He passed the exam by the skin of his teeth. Se lo escapó por los pelos - He missed it by the skin of his teeth. If you get a fright you have los pelos de punto - your hair standing on end. Cuando vi la foto se me pusieron los pelos de punto - when I saw the photo, my hair stood on end. If you pull someone's leg you use the expression tomar el pelo. Me estás tomando el pelo - You're pulling my leg. If you want to say that someone is clever you can say No tiene pelo de tonto. And if you are talking about someone who is outspoken or doesn't mince their words you can say No tiene pelos en la lengua (literally, he doesn't have hairs on his tongue). And a macho man is sometimes described as un hombre de pelo en pecho (a man with hair on his chest). Ya está - That's it Hasta el próximo - Until next time.

There are powerful changes taking place that will move you into the right place at the right time, go with your inner flow.

Fashion Crime at the Golden Globes .....it may have been all about the movies and TV shows inside, but outside was all about the dress! The 69th annual Golden Globes saw some very interesting fashion dos and don’ts. Here are the nominees for the worst dress: Amanda Peet, Julianna Margulies, Piper Perabo and Madonna.

Piper Perabo

Amanda Peet just didn't get it right, her tiered Marc Jacobs creation looking like a table did her no favours whatsoever. And what was Julianna Margulies thinking in that Naeem Khan shiny grape gown? Seriously, not flattering at all. Madonna looked like a Christmas tree. Piper Perabo´s gown was bizarre, to say the least, she looked a bit like she got wrapped

up in some net curtains. Honestly, you´d think they had got dressed in the dark! Don’t they have people to tell them what looks good? Why didn´t someone try and stop them from leaving the house dressed in such a manner? You just can´t get the staff these days. All these ladies deserve style citations, but which one was worst dressed? Which leaves us with the best dressed, and there were some knockouts. Nicole Kidman was a little bit glamour and a whole lot rock 'n' roll in a body-hugging Versace gown. Kate Beckinsale, was drop-dead

Clooney and Dujardin are up against Brad Pitt for “Moneyball”, Gary Oldman for “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” and Michael Fassbender for “Shame”. Reacting to “The Artist's” brace of nominations, Dujardin said: "It makes me so happy that so many people are embracing this movie, a black and white silent film, and that it is becoming so universally celebrated.”

Martin Scorsese's “Hugo” has nine nominations – Scorsese gains a nod for best director, while his other recent film, “George Harrison: Living in the Material World”, is up for best documentary. Five films will battle it out to be named outstanding British film at the awards ceremony on February 12th V “My Week With Marilyn”, “Senna”, “Shame”, “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy”.

Host Phillip Schofield, who also co-presents Dancing On Ice, then asked, "You do have to go to hospital, this is going to be an operation?", to which Morse replied: "Yeah." Hannah, Weller said; "There's an age-gap, but I don't have to justify that - I couldn't give a monkey's... It's not like Hannah's a kid; she's 25. As far as I'm concerned, she could have been 34 or 44 - I haven't got a thing about young chicks. I like all women. What can I say? I'm in love and that's that. Nutritional therapists ‘give dangerous advice’ Nutritional therapists are providing dietary advice that could seriously harm patients' health, according to a Which? undercover investigation. The consumer watchdog sent undercover investigators posing as patients with a range of health conditions to 15 consultations with nutritional therapists, who charged between £50 to £80 per visit. Which? said they found "shocking examples of dangerous advice" which could have put patients with real health problems

at risk. Of the 15 visits, six were rated as "dangerous fails" when it came to advice given, a further eight were rated as "fails", and only one was given a "borderline pass". One of the Which? researchers, posing as a breast cancer sufferer, was told by her therapist to delay radiotherapy treatment recommended by her oncologist, saying they could rid the body of

cancer through diet. The nutritional therapist advised her to follow a nosugar diet for three to six months saying "cancer feeds off sugar. By cutting out sugar we have a better chance of the cancer going away". Another researcher was told by a therapist that if the course of treatment they prescribed for his severe tiredness started to

make him feel unwell, it showed the "treatment was working" and he shouldn't contact his GP as they "wouldn’t understand what was happening". A researcher who said she had been trying for a baby for a year was told after having her iris examined that she had "a bit of bowel toxicity" and a "leathery bowel". The expert panel said both are meaningless terms. The consumer

group called for the government to take action "to stop nutritional therapists putting people's health at risk," and demanded proper regulation of the sector. It also added that anyone concerned about their health should visit a GP, or a registered dietician for tailored dietary advice. A spokesman for the British Dietetic Association said:

"It’s time to start 2012 with a clean slate and make it absolutely clear what the difference is between a dietitian and a nutrition therapist. "Dietitians interpret the science of nutrition into practical evidence-based advice for people while nutrition therapists do not use evidence in a robust fashion and their advice is often based on personal opinion."

Internet addiction linked to brain changes

Doubts about nicotine gum and patches The nicotine gum and patches used by millions of smokers to help kick their habit have no lasting benefit and may backfire in some cases, according to researchers at Harvard’s Centre for Global Traffic Control. In the most rigorous longterm study to date of so-called nicotine replacement therapy, they followed a representative sample of 1,916 adults, including 787 people who said at the start of the study that they had recently quit smoking. They interviewed the participants three times, about once every two years during the 2000s, asking the smokers and quitters about their use of

gum, patches and other their such products, periods of not smoking and their relapses. At each stage, about one-third of the people trying to quit had relapsed, the study found. The use of replacement products made no difference, whether they were taken for the recommended twomonth period (they usually were not), or with the guidance of a cessation

counsellor. Doctors who treat smokers said that the study findings were not unexpected, given the haphazard way many smokers used the products. The products have been controversial since at least 2002, when researchers at the University of California, San Diego, reported from a large survey that they appeared to offer no benefit.

Teenagers addicted to the internet show signs of brain changes similar to those who are addicted to alcohol and drugs. Researchers at the Shanghai Mental Health Centre used MRI scans to look at the brain structure of 17 young people with "internet addiction disorder" and compared them with those of 16 healthy volunteers. In the internet-addicted scans

showed changes to the white matter fibres which connect regions of the brain

Jon O’Riordan I have enjoyed reading about your editor’s exploits in Australia over the last few weeks and wonder if it would be possible to carry on with some sort of travelogue? Of course not everyone can go so far but, with holiday times approaching it would give us all somewhere to think about going and give us an insight to what’s available in other parts of the globe.

Estepona None of the other papers do such a thing so it could be a scoop for my favourite newspaper as well! Also, I greatly enjoy the articles by Jean Joss and Andrea MacLean (I haven’t seen one from the latter lady recently) to give me some idea of where I can go for a day or two locally. Anyway, congratulations on keeping going throughout

this horrible recession and keep up the good work – we all need a top quality newspaper like yours here on the coast to enjoy each week. Editor says: As requested, I will be keeping up with the Oz travelogue for a while (see below) and then we’ll see what we can do in future. Glad to hear you enjoy the paper so much!

Our Lonely Star When you look up at the stars at night you could be forgiven for thinking that they are all single points of light. But on closer inspection it has emerged that the majority of stars are twins or even triple star clusters.

TANTALISING TASMANIA After our exploits up the mountain then back into the city for a couple of days we got back on a plane for our journey to Tasmania. From Melbourne’s Tullamarine airport it was a short flight of just over an hour into Hobart. A lovely flat right on Hunter Street next to the port had been booked for us and, although Tasmania is known for being colder (from the south of the island where Hobart is, the next stop is Antarctica!) the weather wasn’t too bad, around 18ºC during the day down to around 12ºC overnight. On the first day we arrived fairly late in the afternoon so went for a walk around the town to familiarise ourselves. The next day we were up bright and early and in the car off to have a wander along the Huon Highway which runs all the way from Kingston to the north down to Southport in the south where we would pick it up. Names are familiar from the days when people named where they were living in Australia after those they remembered from home in England. We stopped at a small place called Kettering (there we go again with the names) where the people kept sailboats and the ferry to Bruny Island nature reserve ran from, for a cup of coffee then off we went. We carried on along the Channel Highway looking at lots of lovely homesteads and little bungalows along the way. The architecture in Victoria and Tazmania is very much in line with Victorian England. A lot of the houses have porches and verandahs that have corners and railings

of incredibly intricate ironwork – it’s almost like having lace doilies in the corners. We went past “Flowerpot” and “Eggs and Bacon Bay” – I kid you not! – and eventually reached the Huon Highway. We stopped for lunch in Cygnet where they have a home-made chocolates factory (and, no, I did not indulge but only because I don’t like their chocolate – even Lindt chocs taste weird there – then carried along to the National Park at Geeveston. Now, I am anything but a lover of heights. If the pile on a carpet is too thick I get queasy! They had a thing called an “Airwalk” to enable you to see the forest better. I told the girl as we were buying tickets that I don’t like heights but in true Aussie style she said, “Aw, you’ll be right, it’s not that high.” I will never, ever believe anybody who says CENTRO DE IDIOMAS

that to me again! The walk turned out to be at tree-tops level some 48 metres above ground (see pic above) and is 597 metres long. It was made out of metal mesh so that, wherever you looked other than straight up, there was a huge drop. I was not happy and it was a miracle I held it together without shouting “We’re all gonna die!” until the end of the thing where we got off and I was promptly sick. If you don’t mind or love heights this is definitely the thing for you, if you don’t like them, don’t even think of going on it as there are pathways at ground level to walk along quite happily. Oh yes, and if you manage to stick it out on the Airwalk, there’s swinging rope bridges over the Huon fast flowing river further up the trail!

O

ur Sun seems to be in the minority when it comes to neighbours. Our nearest neighbour is actually a group of three stars known as the Alpha Centauri system all orbiting around each other in a celestial dance. The closest of the three is called Proxima Centauri at a distance of 4.2 light years away or 24,690,226,567,371 miles. A very long way off indeed!

A

lpha Centauri’s two neighbouring sisters Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B are just a little further away at 4.3 light years distance and are located in the southern hemisphere so are never visible from Spain. In fact there are only 11 stars within 10 light years of Earth and out of these 11 closest stars only three of them are visible to the naked eye, the others are too faint to be seen without a telescope. So it would appear that we live in quite a secluded area of our galaxy.

T

he brightest star in the night sky is called Sirius and is visible at this time of year – just follow the three stars in Orion’s belt down to the left and you will find Sirius. Sirius is one of our neighbours at 8.7 light years away. But Sirius too is a double star with a very faint companion star orbiting around it. The 9th and 10th closest stars are also a double star at 8.9 light years away but again these two stars are too faint to be seen without a telescope.

I 952 443 222 see our ad on the back page

f you have very good eyesight then there are a few double stars that can be seen with the naked eye. Look for the constellation of The Plough. This is the one that looks a lot like a giant saucepan. Now look very carefully at the middle star of the three stars that form the ‘handle’ of the saucepan and you will see that it has a very faint companion very close by. With a telescope you will find that this faint star also has another companion

star with it forming a nice little trio of stars.

S

tars can also come in tight clusters containing many hundreds of stars all grouped closely together. If you live in a very dark area then look directly overhead at this time of the year and you may be able to make out a faint misty smudge – it’s better with binoculars, this is a double cluster in the constellation of Perseus. Each cluster contains thousands of stars about 7000 light years away from us and just visible to the naked eye.

W

e could have had a double star though. During the formation of the early solar system if the gases that formed Jupiter had joined with the gases of Saturn to produce one huge planet instead of two then it is possible that Jupiter would have been big enough to form into a star.

I

t must be a very strange sight to live on a planet with two suns in the sky. Do you remember that scene from Star Wars where Luke Skywalker went out into the desert looking for the robots R2D2 and C3PO? There were two suns in the sky of his home planet of Tatooine (see the picture above).

W

hen it comes to planets orbiting around stars it is beginning to look like almost every star has at least one planet in its own solar system. New planets are being discovered almost daily and the belief now is that there are at least as many planets as there are stars. It’s just a matter of time before astronomers discover the ‘Goldilocks’ planet – not too big or too small, not too hot and not too cold, just right to support life. Then perhaps there really will be a Luke Skywalker living in a galaxy far, far away and out searching for his droids!

The £2 billion whiplash racket Last Thursday, the House of Commons Select Committee demanded that the Government take action to curtail the incredible growth in whiplash claims following car accidents. If there were really as many people in Britain suffering from whiplash (an injury to the neck following rapid acceleration or braking) as are making insurance claims for the condition, it would not be possible to go anywhere without encountering people shuffling around sporting neck braces. In one 12-month period alone, 432,000 people made claims. Italy's seven-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi is contemplating retiring after the 2014 season. Before he quits, the 32year-old is keen to bring success to his Ducati team and wants to extend his contract before it expires at the end of 2012. Rossi, who won his last title in 2009, said: "I want a new two-year contract with Ducati, maybe the last, and then I'll think about how to enjoy myself. "I want to win something here, make Ducati grow and then stop." Last year, Rossi failed to win a MotoGP race for the first time in his career as he finished in seventh place in the championship. His manager Daniele Morelli was not immediately available for comment. ANSA said Kubica had lost his footing on an icy street in Pietrasanta, near the coastal town of Viareggio and was taken to a local hospital for a scan of his right leg. The agency quoted medical sources as

The Monaco resident also lost a huge amount of blood while trapped in the car. Not good enough Malaga Sporting Gijon 2 - 1 Malaga After a battling display against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey which eventually resulted in a 4-2 aggregate score line, Malaga went to Gijon looking for a vital three points to push for Europe. After a good start for Malaga it was Sporting who

had the first good chance after eight minutes, after some loose Malaga defending. Barral then went close after 20 minutes, and Malaga for all their possession lacked a edge. An cutting innocuous free kick was met by debutant Glauiz on

35 minutes to poke home and Malaga then had to chase the game. The second half began with Malaga creating chances and enjoying possession, Van Nistelrooy had a chance and Eliseu hit the post on 57 minutes. Carzola then had a good shout for a penalty which was waved away by the referee. Van Nistelrooy, who was having his best game all season then had a scrambled attempt cleared from the line. On 87 minutes Ruud looked to have salvaged a point for Malaga after shooting home from inside the box. It wasn’t to be though as Malaga were cruelly undone albeit by a brilliant finish from outside the box by sub Trejo, on 92 minutes to seal the game for Gijon. With Barcelona next week on Sunday at 6pm, Malaga's future league position does not look bright. Report by Scott Forbes player in Holland in 2011. "I was 6-2 in front and there was no problem and then Tony came back and the nerves came," Kist told BBC Sport.

Kist had shown throughout the tournament that he was the man to beat.

During the tournament, Kist played outstanding darts, beating sixth seed and countryman Jan Dekker, Belgian Geert De Vos, England's Alan Norris and two-time world champion Ted (The Count) Hankey.

Victory for Axarquia Cadets Impressive 52-0 win for the under 17’s On Saturday 14th January 2012, Axarquia Rugby Club Cadets (U17 s) made the long journey to Algeciras to play against their Andalucian Group B rivals, Club Rugby Bahia 89 from Cadiz Province. With a full complement of players, confidence was high after their impressive display the week before, and it wasn t long before the talented flanker, George Vallance, broke through the defensive line to score the opening try under the posts. Another individual try for the flanker and a well drilled forwards try just before half-time meant that Axarquia went into the break 21-0 in the lead after captain and main kicker, Danny Ward, secured the three conversions.

great forward play from Bahia 89 for the first 10 minutes of the half, Axarquia stretched their lead with five further tries and three more conversions to eventually wrap the game up with an impressive 52-0 victory earning the team an extra bonus point. Michael Reeve, the head coach, was understandably pleased with the performance, commenting, “The boys played really well and what pleased me most was seeing some of the routines we have been working on in training being executed in a real game. This great group of lads are starting to gel into a really good team, with great camaraderie and I expect to see more and more from them.”

In the second half, after initially withstanding some

also claimed the sixth set to lead 4-2 at the interval. After the break, Kist showed no signs of feeling the pressure as he secured the next two sets to move to within one of his maiden World Championship crown. The Dutchman edged to within two legs of the title but O'Shea, who knocked out defending champion Martin Adams in the quarter-finals, stopped the rot by clawing back a set to reduce the deficit to three.

But the Dutchman settled down to win the next two sets and take the lead in the best-of-13 match. The fourth set went down to a deciding leg, with O'Shea holding his nerve to complete a 68 checkout to level the scores. Kist won the fifth, which included a 12-dart checkout to take the first leg, and then

All rugby fans are encouraged to come and support Axarquia in what may prove to be the pivotal game of their league season. Entry is free to all, and a small bar is operating serving refreshments during the game. But Kist finally got a leg on the board and when O'Shea lost the penultimate leg after miscounting his checkout on 112, Kist seized back the momentum and hit the double 16 at the second time of asking for victory.

Bowls: Costa del Sol Annual Triples The format for the competition was different from that in previous years with the main event (sponsored by Ibex) run as a knockout competition and the first round losers going into a "Plate" knockout competition (sponsored by Miraflores Bowls Club).

The event opened on Monday morning to a continuation of the glorious weather we have seen for the last couple of months, but the clouds arrived on Tuesday morning resulting in much cooler conditions for play for the remaining two days, but we were still fortunate that rain held off. Wednesday saw the semi-finals of both competitions played out in the morning. Most of these were close fought matches with the triples of Alex Hanton, James Monteith Alan Turner of Los Amigos BC and Mike Detheridge, Brian Todd & Lennie Dineen of Benalmadena BC winning through in the main competition. The plate

competition saw Roberto Wright, Mike Glitheroe and Alan Bloom of Mijas BC and Dudley Calder, Fred Stevenson & Mike Kinane of Miraflores LBC winning their matches to qualify for the final. The finals were played in warmer conditions in the afternoon. And in the main event spectators witnessed a demonstration of superb bowling. Despite a late fightback Alex Turner’s team conceded at 21-10 after 16 ends. In the Plate final, Dudley's triple started strongly, but Roberto's team fought back and the scores were level at 10-10 after 11 ends. The match progressed with first one team, then the other taking the initiative, Dudley in particular playing a series of saving shots to keep his team in the match. This was particularly demonstrated in the 13th end, when he stood on the mat to bowl his first bowl the team were seven shots down. He then proceeded to draw his 3 woods onto the jack to win three shots. The drama was not over yet though as the Mijas trio won the last end to tie the match 16-16. An extra end was required which saw the Miraflores triple winning through to loud cheers from the crowd of supporters. Rachelle from

Following the presentations Brian Todd from the winning triple said words of thanks to the host club, the umpires, other participants and Carol and Helen for keeping everybody fed and watered throughout. He made special mention of Derek (from the host club) for organising such a highly enjoyable event. Finally, the next event planned at Miraflores is a "Seniors" Pairs competition (sponsored by Sontec Hearing Centres) which is running from 6th-8th February. The closing date for entries is 1st February. Report by: Grant Frost.

The Federated Farmers of New Zealand are calling for sheep shearing to become an Olympic sport, pointing to the ''shear hard work'' required. Shearing is recognised as a sport by the New Zealand funding body SPARC. "Surely, the time has come to elevate shearing's sporting status to the ultimate world stage?" said federation spokeswoman Jeanette Maxwell. "One way would be to make shearing a demonstration sport at a Commonwealth Games, if not, the Olympics itself." She emphasised the

The women's record holder, Kerri-Jo Te Huia, smashed a previous record by 37, shearing 507 lambs in eight hours. It takes an average of four hours or more to run a marathon.
