Crusading judge in dock for second time

Baltasar Garzon during the hearing

Baltasar Garzon is in the dock for the second time in two weeks, accused of violating a 1977 amnesty law by investigating civil war and Franco-era crimes.

Some 300 relatives of victims from the civil war and the Franco dictatorship gathered outside the Supreme Court in Madrid as the trial got under way on Tuesday. This is one of three prosecutions – brought by private parties – facing Judge Garzon. Last week he was in court on charges of illegally authorising police to bug the conversations of lawyers with clients. He denied wrongdoing and said he had always sought to protect detainees' right to a fair defence. His third

trial, for which no date has been set, involves allegations that he took bribes over payments he allegedly received for banksponsored seminars in New York. If convicted at any of the trials, Judge Garzon, 56, could be suspended from the legal profession for up to 20 years. Judge Garzon became internationally famous for his investigations into

alleged human rights abuses committed around the world – most notably initiating the arrest in the

UK of former Chilean military ruler Augusto Pinochet in 1998. Continued on Page 2

LATE!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

Wow! Isn’t it cold? I’d quite got used to being a bit warmer in Australia but at least it’s bright and sunny and not raining all the time like the last two years so it’s really quite nice as long as you’re properly dressed. I was amazed last week at my Simply Slimmer class that, despite the festive season and eating exactly what I wanted while I was away, including cake (although their chocolate was yuck so I didn’t bother with that) – I had lost three pounds. I thought I’d put back on about half a stone so it was a nice surprise. The system works. You will have noted that The news didn’t hit the streets until Thursday this week instead of Wednesday so, in case you were wondering what had happened, it was a problem at the printers that we could do nothing about but, at least we got it to you even though it was a day late. next month we are starting a new service. Since starting over three years ago we have often had people asking us how to renew their nIE’s, change or renew their driving licences and asking about a host of problems with simply living and working here in Spain. It would seem therefore that we can help by offering translation services and getting these sort of things done for our readers. duncan Burrell will be working with us plus lawyers, gestors and accountants that we know and trust and we hope that everyone will find this a useful arm to The news services. We will let you know more about it all soon.

However, his critics see him as a left-wing busybody only interested in making the headlines. His promise in 2008 to investigate the disappearance of tens of thousands of people during the Franco era, including ordering the excavation of mass graves, spurred two right-wing groups, Clean Hands and Liberty and Identity, to bring Tuesday's prosecution, saying he should have heeded the amnesty agreed in 1977, two years after General Franco's death. Miguel Bernard Ramon, of Clean Hands, said: "Without doubt Judge Garzon has reopened wounds which we Spaniards – whatever our political beliefs – had totally recovered from." Some 22 witnesses called by the defence to speak at the trial will testify for the families of victims.

Bank of Spain predicts deep recession Both the Bank of Spain and the IMF delivered bad economic news on Monday, with the former predicting that the domestic economy faced a deep recession, and the latter warning of the risk of a "solvency crisis" for Spain and Italy if Europe fails to beef up its rescue fund. The central bank also said this year's setback will give way to a "moderate" recovery next year, when GDP is expected to grow by 0.2 percent. The main victim of the worsening economic situation will once again be the job market, with another 500,000 unemployed forecast before the end of the year. Spain already has the highest unemployment

rate in the developed world – 21.5 per cent – expected to rise to over 23 per cent this year and the next. In its report, the Bank of Spain said its forecasts for this year and the next had been arrived at against a "particularly uncertain background" because of ongoing doubts about the future of the euro zone and the impact of the austerity

King Juan Carlos defended the government's proposed fiscal and structural reforms at a reception given at the Palacio Real on Tuesday for ambassadors and international organisations. He said: “Spain believes that the solution to the problems affecting the European Union can only come through fiscal discipline, the coordination of economic policies, structural reforms and the instruments of financial stabilisation which will put us back on the path to economic growth and the creation of employment.” The King also underlined the importance of the EU summit next Monday which will focus on unemployment. King Juan Carlos came out in favour of opening up foreign trade, noting that Spanish companies were “leaders in civil engineering, infrastructures and energy”. He also said Spain would maintain its international commitment to the eradication of poverty and food security.

drive on output. However, it backed the need to reduce the public deficit further in order to enhance Spain's creditworthiness and reduce borrowing costs. The bank said the government would need to introduce further measures on top of the €15 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts announced

at the end of last year to meet the deficit reduction target for this year of 4.4 percent. The central bank expects the contraction of the economy to peter out towards the end of this year, with growth turning positive at the start of 2013 when the budget adjustment burden will be smaller.

Bilingual Only 50 ETA members at large teachers

King's son-in-law 'anxious' to testify

French security experts have calculated that there are only 50 members of the Basque terrorist group ETA at large in Spain and France, of whom 10 could be considered “pistoleros”, that is, active terrorists.

ammunition and explosives. Eight ETA members are awaiting trial in France, three of them arrested after the group declared its “definitive cessation of violence” a few months back.

The rest provide backup services such false documents and hiding places for ETA members on the run. They also look after caches of guns,

One of the group's demands is that the French and Spanish authorities stop pursuing its members but neither government has shown willing.

The lawyer for King Juan Carlos' son-in-law, called a news conference to deny rumours that Iñaki Urdangarin and the Infanta Cristina had decided to divorce. Over the weekend, royal watchers – alleging inside sources – said the King's youngest daughter had decided to seek a divorce. Pascual Vices also told reporters that Urdangarin had paid all his taxes and was "angry" about having to appear on February 25th before a Palma de Mallorca judge to answer to charges that he helped siphon off large chunks of the €3

million given to his nonprofit Nóos Institute by the Islands Balearic government to organise a series of tourism and sporting conventions. Pascual Vives and Urdangarin, who arrived in Barcelona last Wednesday, have been meeting daily to go over the defence strategy. In his 2,700-page summary of the case, Judge José Castro said

prosecutors concluded that Urdangarin "was a visible face" along with his Nóos partner, Diego Torres, in transferring money to offshore foreign accounts. They also found that Urdangarin was still conducting business after 2007, when King Juan Carlos asked him to stop, and sent him and his wife to Washington where he took up a job with Telefónica.

In their efforts to make bilingual education the norm across Spain, the authorities in most regions have run across a major obstacle – not enough primary and secondary schoolteachers are sufficiently fluent in English to teach two or three classes a day in it, and there are not enough qualified native English teachers. The aim is to teach all subjects except the Spanish Language and Mathematics in both languages by 2020.

Safety device to protect newborns When Carlos Herreros' first child was born, he noticed that the systems used by the hospital to identify the baby were vulnerable so he decided to come up with a system that would avoid “the thefts and exchanges that happen even in the developed world”. His system, which he said leaves “nothing to chance” consists of a device that

stores the fingerprints of both mother and child and also makes it possible to locate the child at all times. The company he founded to market the device, ICN Technologies, now supplies hospitals across the north of Spain, and hopes to introduce it in central Spain in the near future.

The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism has drafted a royal decree which will bring back the two-monthly that was replaced in September 2008 by monthly bills – one based on a metre reading and the second one estimated. Consumer protection associations welcomed the move, saying that people had ended up paying too much every two months and it was never clear if the extra payment had been reimbursed. A Ministry spokesman said the system had

given rise to too many time-consuming complaints.

Archbishop apologises to gays The archbishop of Tarragona, apologised on Tuesday for remarks made the previous day in a TV interview about homosexuals “whose behaviour is inadequate for society”. He also said women play a limited role in society and cannot officiate a mass because “we each have a function”, and he couldn’t bring children into the world. His apology came on Tuesday at a traditional meeting between the Church and the press to mark the Day of St Francis of Sales, the patron saint of journalists. When asked if his remarks could increase the public's distancing from the Church, the 67year-old prelate said he hoped not, because “my heart is open to all”.

Iran slams EU oil sanctions Iran has said an oil embargo adopted by European Union foreign ministers on Monday over the country's nuclear programme is "unfair" and "doomed to fail". A foreign ministry spokesman said the measures would not hinder Iran's "progress towards achieving its basic rights". The sanctions ban all new oil contracts with Iran and freeze the assets of Iran's central bank in the EU. The EU currently buys about 20% of Iran's oil exports. The sanctions were formally adopted at a meeting of EU foreign

ministers in Brussels on Monday. British Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a joint statement that Iran had "failed to restore international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear programme”. They added: "We will not accept Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon. Iran has so far had no regard for its international obligations and is already exporting and threatening violence around its region." US President Barack Obama has welcomed the EU

sanctions, saying they show international unity against the "serious threat" posed by Iran's nuclear programme. Earlier on Monday, the Pentagon said the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, as well as a British Royal Navy frigate and a French warship, had passed through the Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Gulf without incident, following Iranian threats to block the trade route. create 600 million jobs over the next decade. The ILO cited three years of crisis conditions in the global labour market as the reason for its worsening assessment. It added that globally some 1.1 billion people were either unemployed or living in poverty. The ILO also added

that young people continue to be among the worst hit by the jobs crisis and that future prospects for them are bleak. The report said: "Judging by the present course, there is little hope for a substantial improvement in their nearterm employment prospects."

Scots up in arms Alleged Irish terrorist set free over referendum The Scottish government’s plans only to allow residents to vote in the independence referendum has provoked anger among the country's expatriate community according to a report in The Telegraph. Under current proposals, many non-Scots living in Scotland at the time of the referendum will qualify to take part, but the hundreds of thousands of Scottish people who live elsewhere in the United Kingdom, or overseas, will not. Bruce Crawford, the minister for government strategy said, however, that the government thought "voting rights should be based firmly on residency” and that extending the vote to Scots living in other countries was likely to pose too many logistical challenges. Michael Cowie, who has spent the last 11 years working in Saudi Arabia, said: “Expatriate Scots take their skills and expertise around the world and are the global face of Scotland,” he explained. “Whilst they may not be contributing directly in terms of taxation whilst outside the UK, those who are working for the benefit of their families and who intend to return to the UK on completion of their work should be entitled to vote.” Steve Gilmour, an expat in Spain, said he found it "incredible" he might not have a say in the country's future. “Mr Salmond is playing a clever game. He doesn’t want the Scots that are no longer living there to vote because most of them know it would be a mistake to leave the Union,” he said. “Furthermore they will not be in Scotland when all the nationalist fervour is at its height, in 2014, as they celebrate the of 700th anniversary Bannockburn. He is clearly hoping that he can make up ground through this.” Other expats, however, were less opposed to being excluded. Fiona Mauchline, who emigrated to Spain in the late 1980s, said she wasn’t convinced

that expats had any right to take part in the referendum. “I think that as government in all its forms is related to the spending of the people's taxes, voting – whether in general elections, local elections or a referendum – should be dependent on which economy you support, who you pay your taxes to,” she said. “I do not believe that, regarding Scotland, I should have the same voting rights there as, say, my father, my cousins, my aunts and uncles, who actively participate at social and economic level in the life of my country. Otherwise you could have a situation whereby millions of people living all over the world voted, basing their decision on nostalgia and that exaggerated sense of national identity we expats often have, and disagreed with the resident voters – who would end up with a decision imposed from outside and probably on non-realistic criteria." One of the main bones of contention in the debate over expat voting rights has been the fact that Scots working outside of their home country are currently entitled to vote in UK or European parliamentary elections, for 15 years after they live the country – leading some people to suggest the same rules should apply to the referendum . Mark Sutherland, a Scottish native who runs a publishing company in the US, is one of many expats who supports this idea. “I have been in the US for more than 15 years, so I still wouldn't get to vote, but those that can vote in other elections should not be denied their rights in the most important referendum for Scotland in 300 years,” he said. First minister Alex Salmond hopes to hold the poll in autumn 2014.

Patrick Azimkar, 21, from north London, and 23year-old Birmingham-born Mark Quinsey died in an attack which happened outside Massereene army barracks in Antrim town in March 2009. The volley of shots was directed at them, other soldiers and two pizza delivery men outside the base and marked the start of a renewed Real IRA terror campaign in Northern Ireland.

The judge said there was sufficient DNA evidence to link Shivers to the murders. He said Shivers's DNA was found on two matches in the back of a burnt-out getaway car and that there was an "extremely strong inference" that the defendant was connected to the vehicle.

Bacon for sale Belfast babies A "seductive and sexually charged" Francis Bacon portrait is expected to fetch about £18m when it goes on sale next month. The portrait of Henrietta Moraes is the highlight of an auction of postwar and contemporary art at Christie's in central London on 14th February. Bacon painted his friend and model in 1963 a year

after his breakthrough exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London. It was bought by a New York collector almost 30 years ago and has not been on display for 15 years. The Irish-born figurative painter was famously described by Margaret Thatcher as “that man who paints those dreadful pictures”.

A bit p****d off? Catering staff at east London’s Snaresbrook crown court have been suspending while police investigate an apparent contamination of food. Judges’ lunches including soup, sandwiches and salads were allegedly spiked with urine and a private dining room has been closed indefinitely while investigations are carried out, according to a report in The Sun last Friday. All the staff are believed to have been supplied by Eurest Services, a division of the giant Compass

catering firm who said that health and safety is their number one priority and that they are taking the matter “extremely seriously.” No-one at the time of going to press has been arrested. A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "Police were called at approximately 4pm on Tuesday 17th January, and are jointly investigating an allegation of food with contamination Redbridge council. There have been no arrests, and inquiries continue."

Three babies have died at the Belfast Royal hospital’s neonatal unit with the death possibly being linked to an outbreak of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterial infection which has already claimed the lives of two other babies in the same unit. The bacterium can cause chest, blood and urine infections. The source of the infection was traced to taps in the intensive care unit that have since been removed. A fourth baby is being

treated for the bacteria and a further five have had it detected on their skin and are being onserved. Described as a bacteria that can survive in moist conditions. Patients can carry it on their skin and not be affected, or they can develop problems with chest infections or bloodstream infections. The population of the unit are often extremely premature, very small babies and therefore they are very vulnerable.

expat to sue “Laughable” Concordia owners not funny now

British expat Sandra Rodgers who was on board the Costa Concordia which struck rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio on Friday 13th is to sue the owners of the vessel according to her lawyers. Ms Rodgers was on board with her daughter and twin grand-daughters and was not only separated from them during the chaos that ensued after the collision but also lost her husband’s ashes that she was planning to scatter during the trip as they cruised past Monaco – she said he had always wanted to see the Monaco Grand Prix. She added that she had also lost heirlooms from her late mother and father. The family was taking the trip to lift their spirits following the deaths of her husband and father last year. Ms Rodgers, originally from Caergwrle in Chester and who now lives in Menorca said: "The evacuation of the ship was completely chaotic. There was certainly no 'women and children first' policy. It

was disgusting." She added that the crew had told passengers that the problem was simply a technical fault in the first place and that passengers should return to their cabins. She added: "Thank God we didn't do as they had told us as we may not have made it off the ship alive. I was standing by the lifeboats and men were banging into me and knocking the girls. And when we finally got into a lifeboat, other passengers and crew were also trying to jump into the boat. I thought 'if they land in here we are going to capsize'." She said it was only when they reached the shore that they got help, from the islanders, adding: "There were no emergency services and the cruise staff had all disappeared. The people of the island were a godsend." She injured her arm in the evacuation and has had to have medical treatment back in Menorca adding that her grand-

daughters are now afraid to be left alone. Ms Rodgers is understood to be among a number of people who have contacted law firm Irwin Mitchell to represent them following the incident. The company said that: “with thousands of people on board this huge vessel, the safety of passengers should have been the first and only priority. Our clients confirm that this was not the case and passengers and their families have paid a very heavy price. The running aground of the Costa Concordia was terrible enough, but this was compounded by the woeful management of the evacuation of the vessel." Costa Cruises has confirmed it is contacting all surviving guests to make sure they have returned home safely and to offer a refund for the cruise and expenses relating to it.

But in his own interview with the BBC, Salmond said: "The configuration of the army in Scotland, the mobile brigade, which is the outcome of the defence review, looks exactly like the configuration you'd want for a Scottish defence force – so that's one naval base, one aircraft base and a mobile armed brigade." Jim Murphy, the shadow defence secretary, told The Herald that Salmond's proposals were "bizarre". He added: "After denouncing Tory defence policies, the SNP have suddenly announced it is the best they can threaten if Scotland was independent. This raises huge questions about separation. Scotland knows that leaving the UK would be a huge blow to Scottish defence communities."

Just months after Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond led a cross-party campaign to keep three military airbases in Scotland he has announced plans that an independent Scotland would have just one RAF airbase at Lossiemouth in the north, one naval base at Faslane submarine base on the Clyde – where all UK submarines are due to be sited from 2017 despite recent attempts to force the UK to remove Trident nuclear weapons and its entire nuclear submarine fleet from Scotland, and a large armed brigade to include the Royal Regiment of Scotland, The Scottish Dragoon Guards tank regiment and the Scots Guards. Salmond's comments were a riposte to an attack by Phillip Hammond, the UK defence secretary, who said of the Scottish National party's proposals : "The idea you can sort of break off a little bit, like a square on a chocolate bar, and that would be the bit that went north of the border, is frankly laughable."

Socialists still rule the air waves Spain’s judicial shame

A

n article entitled “Socialists still rule at RTVE” in the ABC newspaper last week revealed that someone has been following the state-owned broadcaster’s coverage of the new government. It mentions a report on the content of RTVE’s news broadcasts but doesn’t say who drew it up. The obvious suspect is the government itself – ABC is pro-PP – but there’s a lot of truth in what the report says. In fact, it was probably a government ploy to prepare the public for its plans to “reorganise” RTVE, details of which began to surface on Tuesday.

T

he report points out that RTVE has relentlessly presented the government’s cuts and other measures in a negative light and compares this with the never-ending honeymoon it had with the Zapatero government. I’ve actually been wondering about that because, as RTVE is stateowned, the most logical thing would be for it to make the government look good and the opposition bad. This no doubt will start happening when the government gets round to appointing “one of its own” to direct RTVE.

T

he article also mentioned RTVE’s huge coverage of the so-called Gürtel corruption case for which former (PP) Valencia regional premier Francisco Camps spent five days in the dock in court last week. Yet there’s hardly been a peep about the ERE corruption case in Sevilla in which multi-million subsidies intended to help struggling companies to solve staff reduction problems seem to have been diverted into lots of Socialist pockets for the past 10 years. The case surfaced a year ago but it is only now that details about all its ramifications are coming out.

T

he two cases are similar in that they illustrate how the party ruling a region takes advantage of its majority to distribute money, juicy contracts and favours to its sympathisers. Valencia hasn’t always been governed by the PP. It was governed by the Socialists for its first 15 years as an “autonomous” region, until the PP won the 1995 election and has governed since then with absolute majorities. Since it was reported in February 2009 that then regional premier Francisco Camps had accepted four suits as a present from a tailor close to businessman Francisco Correa,

accused of controlling an alleged criminal network, the press has been having a high old time. (Gürtel is the translation of correa which means belt). A lot of people, including myself, thought it was just another ploy to blacken the regional PP government and bring it down in last year's regional election – which Camps won with an even bigger majority. However, whether Camps paid for the suits, as he claims, or not is becoming increasingly irrelevant as details of the Valencia regional government’s bankruptcy emerge. And the man most to blame has to be Camps, who governed from 2003 until he resigned last July.

I

f the PP manages to unseat the Socialists in the March regional election, as predicted, we’ll be inundated with details about ERE, which I predict will make all other corruption cases look like child’s play. The Socialists have ruled Andalucia with comfortable majorities since 1981, and former premier Manual Chaves was often referred to as “king”. He was often in the news because of one relative or another being caught with their hands in the till. Zapatero made him third deputy PM a couple of years back when it was revealed the Junta de Andalucia had given a €10 million subsidy to a Huelva company which employed Chaves’s daughter as a legal adviser. His son is apparently mixed up with a favoursfor-kickbacks at the company which runs the public markets in Sevilla. His successor, Jose Antonio Griñan, now faces an election for the first time on March 25th and is desperate to keep the ERE scandal under wraps until then. However, some of the cats are already out of the bag and there are probably a million more lurking inside it.

Turning back the clock

T

he Church hierarchy seems to have swallowed the Socialist propaganda that the Partido Popular is Franco’s political heir. As a result, it has been increasingly vocal about gays and women, and now the Archbishop of Valladolid thinks deputy PM Soraya Saenz de Santamaria is not a suitable choice to make the opening speech at the Valladolid feria in April – because she didn’t get married in church. Get real, Archbishop. Go talk to a few parish priests – open your eyes to the realities of the 21st century.

S

cores of rights supporters gathered on Tuesday in Madrid for the opening day of what they see as an unfair trial at the Supreme Court against controversial but admired High Court Judge Baltasar Garzón. This witch hunt, they say, is geared to ruin the career of an internationally famous magistrate who catapulted to fame in 1998 when he issued an arrest warrant against former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet on human rights charges. The fascists and other protectors of the memory of the Spanish dictatorship want their turn at Garzón for trying to open an investigation into crimes committed during the Franco regime. In complaints originally filed against him by an obscure far-right union calling itself Manos Limpias and the Falange de las JONS party, the plaintiffs say that Garzón purposely overlooked the 1977 amnesty law passed during the Transition and which pretty much gave immunity to all the crimes committed during the period 1936-1975. But what Judge Garzón tried to do was to make it easier for the victims and survivors of this dark period to find their loved ones buried in common graves throughout the country and seek closure with the past.

A

lthough it may seem strange that the Supreme Court – the bench where many of its justices no doubt are politically tainted – should bring international shame on itself by putting Garzón in the dock, the High Court judge has pretty much given his enemies the necessary ammunition over the years for this type of revenge. As mentioned in past columns, Garzón has been a publicity seeker – writing books, giving lectures and capitalising on his fame. He is probably the most famous judge in the world and perhaps the only magistrate who is often the answer of a pub quiz question. Where judges in other countries are discreet, Garzón has been vocal, and many of his fellow magistrates, including others on the High Court, have found this type of judicial temperament unacceptable.

L

ast week, Garzón went on trial in another case. He has been accused of violating the constitutional guarantees of an alleged gang of corrupt businessmen of the so-called Gürtel conspiracy who profited from local Popular Party (PP) governments in

Madrid, Valencia and Castilla-La Mancha through kickbacks in exchange for tenders. The judge authorised police investigators to record the jailhouse conversations they were holding with their lawyers on suspicion that the defence team was helping them launder and conceal their ill-gotten money. The lawyers say Garzón wanted to know their defence strategy and violated the attorney-client privilege. Again those who filed the complaint against Garzón are loosely connected to the PP. Garzón’s lawyer says that all the complainants in the two cases have filed briefs that do not meet the minimum standards. That will be for the Supreme Court to decide.

T

he Garzón case is a really a judicial tragedy for Spain. For years this High Court judge has gotten away with drumming up so much self-induced publicity without even a slap on the wrist. His power base of supporters has grown throughout the world, incomparable to any other judge. And now when it comes for revenge, the legal community is divided with the nation’s politicised Supreme Court taking centre stage and revealing to the entire international community that this bench is far from impartial. It is time for a complete cleanup of the Spain’s judiciary.

Brussels debut

E

conomy Minister Luis de Guindos has been thrown to the wolves for the first time since he assumed office. The flamboyant “non-politician” Cabinet member went to Brussels amid a stark forecast by the Bank of Spain that the country was headed for deep recession this year and would probably miss its deficit reduction target of 4 per cent of GDP by the end of 2012. But the ever-confident De Guindos assured his EU colleagues that the government of Mariano Rajoy would whip things back into shape soon. In order to do so, the government needs unique mechanisms to create jobs and rein in the regions’ debts. It is not going to be easy, but De Guindos has been privately telling friends and associates that he believes there will be some improvement in the economy within six months. It seems like a long shot, but if the minister says he can do it, who is to argue with him? We’ll just have to wait and see.

If you can afford it fly Business or 1st Class, if you have the time to save to do it then it’s well worth it – cattle class is not pleasant.

Last week I told you all about the Airwalk and the journey to it in Tasmania. This week I’m carrying on with Tasmania as it is a quite fascinating place and a little like England would have been say 50 years ago. The weather is generally cooler than on the mainland but can still get very hot and a hat is a must if the sun is out as it seems much easier to get burnt there than here. We had hired a car at the airport from Thrifty car that wasn’t too expensive and you would definitely need one to get around and see the sights properly. The Airwalk I talked about last week is brilliant if you like or don’t mind heights as you are literally up in the tree tops looking down on the forest and the river. Apart from the Airwalk, the Huon trail has many things for visitors to do including watching boat builders, arts and crafts people working with clay, glass and the fragrant Huon pine. On the Huon river you can go jet boating and experience white water jet boating along the tannin stained waterway, then

there’s the apple museum that has the history of growing this crop in the area. The valley is famous for its fruit orchards and you can often find apples, cherries, pears and anything that’s in season for sale at the roadsides. You can also go trout fishing in this area but you would first need to sort out a permit with the local authority. There are many markets to visit throughout the week that have a buzzing atmosphere and are generally quite different to the ones we have here in Spain. Of course, there’s still stalsl that do T-shirts etc., but the food is different and eclectic in many cases and the crafts inspiring. There are festivals throughout the year so, if you fancy a trip there, here’s what goes on during the first part of the year but do bear in mind that their summer is our winter – they are, after all, on the other side of the world so have opposite seasons. At the end of January is the Cygnet Folk Festival. This is where the chocolate factory is and they were

revving up for the festival while we were there. People come from all over Australia for this particular festival (they had had another music festival (Woodstock style) the week before in the north of the island in an area called Launceston so, if you’re into that style of music, then that’s the one for you). There are just a few places to stay in Cygnet itself so you’d be wise to start booking now if you want to go next year as it gets extremely busy. In February is the Middleton County Fair that has a scarecrow competition held at the Middleton Hall Grounds. March first sees the Southern Open Vinyards Weekend where you can trail through the local vinyards and their “cellar doors” (bodegas) for tasting and buying their wares. This carries over the first weekend of March, and is followed on the second weekend (usually Sunday and Monday) by the Taste Of The Huon festival in Ranelagh recreation ground. On the same weekend there’s the Cygnet regatta usually on the 2nd with a starting point on the Lymington Road. There is a Hobart to Kettering route

on the first day, Kettering to Cygnet on the 2nd then a grand fiesta in Cygnet on the last day. The last weekend of March has the Focus On Franklin and the Apple and Salmon race that takes place all over the township. April has the Huon Tasmanian Salmon Port Esperance Regatta at the sailing club in Dover followed by the Birchs Bay Sculpture Prize. Have a look at their website www.huontrail.org.au/even ts.php for more information on the area. Hobart itself, the main town in the south of the island is a vibrant place with its own airport to arrive in. The harbour is home to bright spinnakers billowing in the breeze with tasty fish restaurants making the most of the daily fresh catch all along the edges. It has a rich colonial past which is shown in its buildings and you can wander along the streets admiring all the verandahs and balconies with intricate ironwork decorating them. It is a small city that has all the attractions of a state capital

but is easily walkable. It has everything from the famous Salamanca Saturday market to modern shops and precincts to the wonderfully preserved area of historical Battery Point. Between December and January the annual Sydney to Hobart sailing ship race fills the docks with colourful sails, laughter and commiserations all round together with the Hobart Taste Festival to fill your tums and your heads with ideas of new dishes to bring home with you. There is a new art museum opened just last year called MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) based in the grounds of the wonderful Murilla estate with its winery, boutique, cutting edge restaurant and bodega to sample the wines. Also for art lovers and right in Hobart port is the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery housed in a heritage building with a waterfront setting. The highlights of the museum include Tasmanian Aboriginal art and culture, Tasmanian history, colonial and contemporary art and

an exhibition of the Ice to Islands on Antarctica, the Southern Ocean and the subantarctic islands. A fascinating place. The Salamanca Saturday Market starts at around 9am and goes on until 3pm. Here you will find second hand bargains, people selling arts and crafts – everything from silver jewellery to beautiful bowls made from the local Huon pine, a good cup of tea to home-made sausage rolls, and the oddest thing we saw was “fruit leathers”. These are made of puréed fruits which are then partially dried and rolled out into thin round pieces that resemble a pancake. The array of flavours was amazing inasmuch as there was pretty much every type of fruit you could think of, but then they mixed them so you had banana and apple, peach and pear. Weird but good! Another place we visited, and another that really takes a full day is Port Arthur. I will tell you about that next week. Written by Kym Wickham

Community News Charity shop moves Cudeca are pleased to announce that their charity shop in Fuengirola has moved to new premises just three doors from their one original in Avda Jesús Santos Rein. The new location has much better facilities for the volunteers and clients as it is on one level with a larger working area and display windows onto the main highway. The Fuengirola shop was the first charity shop to open on the coast in 1992. and it is fitting that the move has taken place during the 20th anniversary year of Cudeca Hospice. Many other

charity shops have since opened on the coast, following their lead. Monday 16th January saw a successful opening with many regular clients visiting to snatch up special offer bargains. The volunteers are very excited with the new layout and are looking forward to welcoming old and new customers to boost income in support of Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice. Donations of clean reusable items are always very welcome. The shop is open Monday to Saturday mornings 10.00 to 13.30 hrs.

Local painter passes away One of the most recognised painters in Mijas, local artist Don Clarke passed away on Monday. Born in Birmingham, he attended the Mosely School of Art and the Birmingham College of Art and was an illustrator at Central Studios in Birmingham for ten years. Moving to Rome, he spent five years as an art restorer but for almost forty years he lived in the Mijas area.

His love of painting took him to Greece, Holland and Italy and his fellows at the Guild described his work as a perfect mix of hyperrealism and Venetian technique. His varied subject matter ranged from marine, to images of fantasy to female nudity. He will be sadly missed by the mijeño people who convey their sympathies to his family at this sad time.

New scam by phone My love is like... The never ending list of people trying to part you from your money took a new turn here in Spain recently in the form of a phone call allegedly from the Microsoft Corporation or the Windows Support Team. The caller, who may even address you by name, attempts to convince you there might be problem with your computer and connects you to a technician. Who in turn gets you to run some tests and then connect to a web page. The web page contains a virus which infects your computer – you've guessed it – the techie offers to fix it for a fee which is payable by credit card. It's all downhill from there. The fraudsters now have remote access to your computer, your credit card details and, more importantly, the three digit code on the back. The important thing to remember is that corporations like Microsoft are not likely to make unsolicited phone calls in English to expats living in Spain – it’s a scam.

Microsoft offered the following advice . • Be wary of unsolicited calls related to a security problem, even if they claim to represent a respected company. provide • Never personal information, such as credit card or bank details, to an unsolicited caller. • Do not go to a website, type anything into a computer, install software or follow any other instruction from someone who calls out of the blue. • Take the caller's information down and report it to the police. • Ensure you have the latest security updates for Windows and all programs on your PC. • Always use a strong, unique password and change it regularly • Keep your firewall up to date and turned on. Many thanks to Cliff Dale from Electron Box and Pauline Stonehill Chairperson of NADFAS for this warning. Written by Pete Woodall

Burns night success Over fifty members and guests of the British Society attended the Burns Night Supper held at the Society headquarters, Villa Luisa. The evening began with a welcome speech from the President Alan Peel followed by the traditional procession as the haggis was brought into the room

on a silver platter by Sandra Simpson and the whisky bearer ensured that everyone was supplied in readiness for the toast. The address to the haggis was given by Liam Quigley in his own entertaining and unique style, followed by the toast as everyone raised their glass to “The Haggis”.

DAVID THE DOGMAN: Buying a dog

These two beautiful Shetland ponies have found a new home at ARCH (Andalucian Rescue Centre for Horses) because their owners, due to poor health, could not care for them anymore. Milly and Gilly will be the new stars of the show at the Saturday morning Kid's Pony Club. They have settled in very well at ARCH´s stables so if your children would like to meet them and join in with the Pony Club – learning to care for horses, grooming, mucking out with the chance of a possible ride, subject to availability– just

Owning a dog has many benefits, but it is also very important to remember that it is long-term commitment and responsibility – dogs are not toys that can be put away in a cupboard when you are bored with them. If you are considering taking on a puppy, perhaps you should ask yourself these questions first:

come along to ARCH HQ, behind Miralmonte Venta on the Alhaurin to Coin road any Saturday morning from 10-12. For more information on the Pony Club or to make an enquiry to support the charity please contact Claire on 635 798 219 or Val on 620 175 828.

COST Owning a dog can be very expensive and this should be taken into account before buying a puppy. Costs to consider are the weekly food bill, bedding,

toys and other equipment, veterinary care, boarding kennel fees, enrollment fees for training classes, grooming /clipping fees. TIME Dogs demand a lot of time and attention, particularly as puppies. You will need to take your puppy outside hourly. Puppies have very weak bladder control and will need to relieve themselves at least twelve time through out the day. There is a fairly set pattern. YOUR LIFESTYLE Choose a breed that will suit you and your lifestyle.

The lifespan of a dog is thirteen years. Are your current circumstances likely to change – such as starting a family or going to another country ? If so, will owning a dog be a problem? Will you be able to devote a lot of time to your puppy for the first few weeks when he arrives home? Are you going to be away from home for long hours during the day? If so, it may be unwise to buy a puppy. Do you go away frequently? If so, will you be able to take the dog with you ? Will you have time to attend training classes ?

part 1

Will you be able to take him for at least one good walk a day ? We will look at more things that need to be given thought before you take on a pet in next week’s article.

Lions help sufferers Last week the Mijas La Cala Lions Club presented a cheque for 1000 to the Mijeña Women’s Association with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue (AMMIFA) to help towards specialist materials needed for therapies. AMMIFA help those in the community struggling with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome and attracting sufficient funding is an ongoing challenge. The charity makes and sells needle craft at local ferias and sells donated items from their workshop in Las Lagunas.

Lollipop Arriving well before their start time, a new breed of around 20 would-be Mijas lollipop ladies and men turned up for their first practical lesson in how to make sure students passed safely on crossings to and from school. The group (all volunteers from the third age group) were overseen by local police in their duties and they have learnt first-hand during their first road safety lesson. Once they have completed their course, they will be seen helping the students crossing the roads in the municipality safely.

Caring For Your Growing Family With Life Insurance Now that you have children, you have a new perspective on life. Suddenly your kids are the centre of your world, and you would do whatever it takes to protect them. That protection could be anything from making sure your little ones get off to school okay, to lending a healing touch when one of them doesn't feel well. Just as important as the physical protection, though, is the financial protection. Once you have dependents who rely on you financially, it's important to consider buying life insurance. In the event of your death, life insurance can give your loved ones the funds they need to maintain their lifestyle. It can be used to pay off the mortgage on your family's home, pay monthly bills or provide a college education for your children. Along with paying your mortgage and children’s education, these are some other advantages to taking out a life insurance policy: • Pay off outstanding debts. Any debts that would remain unpaid in the event of your death can be paid with the money from a life insurance policy. It will allow your family to maintain its financial standing without suffering additional upheavals.

• To replace lost income. If you are the primary wage earner in your family, a life insurance policy can provide the security of knowing that they will continue to receive this income in the event of death. • Pay final expenses. Life insurance policies such as Liberty Life will make it easier to deal with death or disability. It may also provide your family with the funds necessary to pay Inheritance Tax, which may otherwise have a strong impact on the patrimony. • Legal help. Liberty Life also includes a free, after death, Additional Assistance Service. The service provides beneficiaries with the legal assistance they may need after the death of the insured, which also covers repatriation in case of death abroad. Liberty Seguros wishes to offer you life insurance with great benefits that provide a safety net for you and your family through a

complete range of covers. The risk of death will be completely covered by Liberty Life. Also, if you contract additional covers you will be protected in the event of an accident, including a road-traffic accident, disability and serious illness. Life insurance is one thing you can take care of now to make sure your family is taken care of tomorrow. For more information on life or other insurance or to find your nearest Liberty Seguros broker visit http://www.libertyseguros. es/expatriates/en

Blessed pets Help! How do I...??? Starting from the week beginning February 20thThe News will be offering a service where you can come for advice on how to deal with any problems you may have in connection with living in Spain. Bear in mind that the main political party and local parties have changed and hence a lot of the things we all assumed we knew before, may have now changed: for example, building permissions, taxation, drivers’ licences, fishing licences - in fact, you name it, you need a licence for it these days! We atThe News have been innundated, of late, with questions regarding these changes and, with this in mind, we have decided to set up a Help Desk where people can come along and get information about how to go about things here.

A great tradition in Mijas is the celebration of San Anton and the blessing of the people’s pets. At midday last Tuesday the participants this year included the normal cats, dogs and birds and also a small Vietnamese pig. The other tradition at the celebration is one

where local single women throw a pebble at the image of the saint in the hope of finding a boyfriend by the end of the year. AS usual there were many hopefuls! There was singing and dancing and you could sample buñuelos and chocolate later in the afternoon.

The Help Desk will run on three days each week (one of which will be Saturday) between the hours of 10.30am and 12.30pm and, any queries we can’t deal with there and then, we will make enquiries about using an excellent team of experts that we have come to respect over several years of knowing them. Our main translator, Duncan Burrell will already be known to many of you and, between us we have over 45 years experience living and working in Spain.

If you can’t wait until February 20th, call us here at The News in the first instance on 952 454 491

Anthropological Study for Gib The Heritage Department of Gibraltar is to give impetus to the anthropological study of the Gibraltarians. The Gibraltar Museum is working with the Heritage Department and is taking on the initiative of a major anthropological study of those living on The Rock. To achieve this it has teamed up with the Anthropology Dept of the University of Toronto in Canada and with the Gibraltar Government Archives. The three institutions have been involved in this field of study for a number of years and will now combine the effort with several clear aims in mind. The Mayor, Julio Alcantara has accepted the invitation to act as ambassador for the project, helping in

its promotion and taking an active participatory role. The project has two major aims. The first is to give impetus to the work already carried out on oral histories. The project is led by Dr Geraldine Finlayson of the Gibraltar Museum and she is now asking for volunteers to come forward and help in the project. Volunteers may be persons interested in being interviewed and having their testimonies recorded for posterity in an audio library; they may also be persons interested in being trained to assist in the running of the interviews themselves. His Worship the Mayor has already volunteered for both roles. All those wishing to be involved are requested to contact Dr Finlayson at the

It will be written by members of the joint team although specialists will be invited to write guest articles. All articles will be posted on the Gibraltar Museum’s web site and will be freely

available to the general public. The history is expected to be built up over a number of years. Part of the activity will be linked to the Diamond Jubilee Programme. A seminar on the social history and anthropology of the Gibraltarians will be organised later this spring and the oral histories project will give emphasis to those Gibraltarians who were born in 1952.

Minister Picardo´s uK trip

Following Mr Miliband's

recent remarks about "Tax Havens", the Chief Minister briefed him on the latest developments in Gibraltar and in particular on the work of the finance centre as a fully compliant EU financial services hub that operates entirely in keeping with EU directives and regulations – fully compliant with OECD rules also and therefore not by any measure a "Tax Haven".

Mr Picardo who was accompanied by the Chief Secretary, Ernest Gomez, later met with Minister of State for Defence, Nick Harvey at the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall. The Special Envoy for Gibraltar Defence Eleanor Laing MP also attended the meeting, given her specific responsibilities. Mr Picardo said: "This was an excellent opportunity for

me to put the Gibraltar arguments to Mr Harvey about issues that are current. We are happy to be working closely with the Ministry of Defence on the issues that matter to both sides generally and in particular the progressing of Lands Memoranda. I very much look forward to working with the Minister and his team in the coming months and years."

It's almond blossom time in Andalucia ‌ Written by Jean Joss

From Axarquia to Antequera, from Marbella to Ronda and beyond, for a few short weeks the countryside is adorned with groves of pink and white flowers - making driving, walking and riding even more of a pleasure than usual.

na

ne of the advantages of having a husband who owns a classic car (we've been members of the SOL Classic Car Club for over five years now) is you get to explore countryside you wouldn't normally see, down roads you may normally never venture. Take for instance the old road to Casabermeja – where the almond blossom is quite spectacular at this time of year. Not many of the drivers charging through the motorway tunnels towards Granada realise that there is a more scenic route high above them, winding across the Montes de Malaga with views on both sides. If you leave the motorway at the sign for the Jardín de Concepción and then follow the sign for the Pantano de Agujero you can drive across the dam, through the tunnel, past the old and celebrated Venta el Túnel (famous locally for its rice dishes and a Mecca for Malguenos at the weekend). Then it is onwards and upwards with spectacular views of the mountains (and the new motorway link), as well as the pink and white trees.

E

ven the smallest bit of campo seems to sport almond blossom at this time of year, trees seem to cling to rocky inclines and

hide down tiny valleys, because, of course, almonds are an important crop – Spain is the second largest producer in the world (after the USA) and Andalucia and Valencia are the main regions where almonds are cultivated. Along with the olive trees the almond groves have been part of the Mediterranean landscape for centuries. There are two varieties grown here – the sweet almonds (whose trees have the white blossoms) and the bitter variety with the darker pink flowers.

A

nd almonds have had a big impact on eating habits and local recipes. You can find fresh ones on sale at the farmers' markets or you can buy them roasted on the street corners in the winter dusk. Restaurants serve meat with almond sauces, make them into soup (with

nd not only are almonds delicious to eat, some claim they can be a healthy addition to the diet – containing high levels of vitamin E and mono-unsaturated fats – as well as being acceptable to those who suffer from allergies or lactose or gluten intolerance. So make a note on the calendar that in October each year the village of Almogia in Malaga province also holds its Day of the Almond – with the emphasis being on the edible and not the fleeting beauty of its pink and white blossoms.

Age Care Association is a fully registered, non-profit organisation staffed entirely by volunteers. The majority of work is helping older British people living in the province of Malaga, but also includes other nationalities that speak English. Welfare information, practical support and two help lines

are provided. The association hold weekly drop-in centres in three locations plus their volunteers visit people at home, help facilitate hospital visits and assist with contacts to other local service providers such as Spanish Social Services, care homes and legal services. They work closely with the British Consulate, Royal British Legion, and branches of the International Lions Clubs. The amount of enquiries they receive indicate they need to expand their services along the coast but to do so they need more volunteers. Volunteers are especially needed for

want to be a soldier” sees Alex, a 10-year-old child, developing an unhealthy obsession with morbid imagery, which marks him asocial. Unable to befriend his peers, he creates an imaginary friend and role model, whom he names Astronaut Captain Harry. Upon the birth of his twin baby brothers, Alex feels more neglected than usual. He emotionally extorts his father into buying him a TV for his room, and starts spending hours watching violent programmes. As his antisocial behaviour deepens, he also takes on a new imaginary friend, Sergeant John Cluster who will teach him how to realise his new dream of being a great soldier. nimal charity Animals In Distress (AID) are desperate for volunteers. The charity has a shop in Alhaurin el Grande and a rescue centre both of which need your help so, if you have a couple of hours to spare or are bored and fancy doing something really useful with your time, how about helping out in the shop or walking a dog for a while. They also need more foster homes for their rescued dogs and cats while they are waiting to find a new home. Sometimes you can’t take on an animal permanently – maybe you go back to the UK for the summer – but could give them a loving temporary home while you are here in Spain. Or, you could help with the fundraising aspects of the charity either by organising some events, helping out at them or even just baking a cupcake or ten for them to sell on the stalls. Sounds like a good idea, doesn’t it? So, if you think you can help in some way or another, call Jan on 619 377 787 and, if you can’t get through because she’s stuck in the campo without a signal, leave a message.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR s I sit here munching my A way through the final remnants of the Christmas

e Descendants

Quality Street tin, (still trying to clear the backlog of recorded Christmas and New Year telly), I am thoroughly enjoying the recent BBC drama “Sherlock”.

By Alexander Payne, Starring: George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Matthew Lillard In a recent pre-Golden Globes interview George Clooney said that he would be amazed if his latest movie did not find itself up for best film Oscar, because “…it’s that good.” Well, it looks as though he is right to expect it to feature heavily in all movie awards this year. Last weekend The Descendants won best picture, and Gorgeous George picked up the best actor gong at the Golden Globes. It’s described as a black

comedy drama and yes, it fits that bill. Clooney is Matt King, a Honolulu-based lawyer and the sole trustee of a family trust that controls 25,000 acres of valuable land on the island of Kaua’I. The trust has just decided to sell the land for development when a boating accident tragically leaves Matt’s wife Elizabeth in a coma. Doctors tell Matt that Elizabeth will never recover and he needs to prepare for her life support system to be shut down. So

Expendables 2 will be PG-13 Chuck Norris commands it!

It all started more as a rumour flung around the 'net at the speed of gossip thanks to fan website Expendables Premiere picking up comments Norris made in a Polish magazine interview. “In Expendables 2, there was a lot of vulgar dialogue in the screenplay,” he explains. “For this reason, many young people wouldn't be able to watch this. But I

During the journey Matt

finds out a lot about himself and even more about the daughters he has been so distant from, in what the critics have universally described as a funny, moving and beautifully acted movie. How was Brian tied up in the family land deal? And does Matt rebuild his family relationships? There are laughs, and moments when you might need a hankie, and Clooney and the two girls make this a movie to savour.

Chuck Norris is a man credited with many special abilities. Now it appears he also has the power to convince producers that allaction sequels to R-Rated movies boasting lots of ‘80s action stars should be PG13 and avoid naughty language. Because that’s what he’s managed with The Expendables 2.

the hot-shot lawyer who knows that he is not close to his daughters, 10-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller) and 17-year-old Alex (Woodley) has to step up to the plate and take responsibility. Alex tells her dad that mum Elizabeth has been having an affair with real estate agent Brian (Lillard) and Matt and the girls head off on a road journey to find Brian so he can say goodbye to Elizabeth.

don't play in movies like this. Due to that I said I won't be a part of that if the hardcore language is not erased. Producers accepted my conditions and the movie will be classified in the category of PG-13." We're pretty sure he meant to say "I don't play in movies like this now." What about The Delta Force? Hellbound? The Cutter? The Missing In Action trilogy? We could go on...

His first crack at scripting.. Usually when the words and worlds of Cormac McCarthy have hit our cinema screens, they’ve been filtered through the filmmakers who adapted his novels – the Coens on No Country For Old Men or Joe Penhall on The Road. But after seeing his books go successfully through the cinematic process, the author has decided to have a crack at getting his vision up directly, turning screenwriter for The Counsellor. Deadline reports that McCarthy surprised his book editors by sending them the script when they were waiting for his next

his BBC adaptation which TCumberbatch stars Benedict and Martin Freeman brings the escapades of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson into the present day. Those of you who like their stories told in the original style, may find this adaptation a little difficult to digest as Sherlock runs around modern London traffic having deduced a clue from a text message on a smartphone! Having said that, this incarnation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective is well written and brilliantly acted. ooking back into the history Loriginal of the character from the books, I was surprised to read that Conan Doyle had written only four novels but over 50 short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes and that the original character was something of an oddball. He was a cocaine addict and quite partial to a shot or two of morphine when the need arose. In addition, both he and his erstwhile companion Watson, were both heavy tobacco users in all of its forms. olmes was originally H described as a highly educated Cambridge

novel (crafting a screenplay as a break from penning a book? The man needs to learn the meaning of the word procrastination! Daytime TV, Mr McCarthy!) The plot revolves around a respected lawyer who believes he’s smart enough to try his hand at the drug business without being dragged down into the world, but in true McCarthy style, discovers that he’s very wrong.

undergraduate who was born some time around the 1860s and the use of drugs at that time would have caused no issues in the publishing world as both drugs were perfectly legal at the time of writing. He shares his home with Dr Watson (an Afghan war veteran) and they set about righting wrongs and solving the puzzles that the police cannot. The character of Sherlock is an amazingly complex one and for those of you who have not read any of the many pages of information about him, I would recommend spending

an hour or so on a little research. It is fascinating stuff and helps greatly when watching the various portrayals on the TV and in the movies. ccording to Wikipedia, A Sherlock was first portrayed in a silent film in 1900 entitled “Sherlock Holmes Baffled” and has also been played by such notables as : Basil Rathbone 14 times from 1939 to 1946 Ronald Howard US TV 39 episodes Robert Stephens 1970 Christopher Plummer 1976 Michael Pennington 1987 Jeremy Brett 1984 to 1994 on Granada Television eremy Brett is considered to Jmany be the definitive Holmes for fans and received critical acclaim. He was for me the one I remember from my youth. uy Ritchie took up the G mantle of director for the most recent film adaptations of Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role and Watson being played by Jude Law. The 2009 film entitled “Sherlock Holmes” was well received and secured a Golden Globe for Mr. Downey Jr. In 2011 Guy Ritchie again directed the same two leading actors in the sequel “ Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” I have not seen either of these latest films, but I understand the character is portrayed with an emphasis on his anti-social habits and quirky personality traits more closely related to the original character written by Conan Doyle. love the character of Sherlock ItrueHolmes, for me he is the only detective. Dark and mysterious, amazing abilities, quirky and oddball and yet brilliant. o my shame I have not read Tis onthe original stories, but this my “to do” list for 2012. ( if I ever clear my TV backlog that is) .

Others are looking to you to come up with ideas and suggestions, they know that you will come up with solutions that are likely to work. The more you do at the moment the more irresistible you become to others; they will become visibly interested when they see you assume power and control over the situation. You have the ability to take a huge weight off another’s back so don’t waste the opportunity to shine and become the warrior you were born to be. Kindness matters and goes a long way so be careful this week that you do not take actions that could cross your moral line, as this is likely to happen if you become too mentally distracted, the key is to remain focused on what you are doing. Clean up whatever relationship business you can so that you can spring forward without baggage and weight. You may be emotionally challenged this week so you need to find a way to rise above it. Time is on your side. Your powers of persuasion allow you to shift some hard tides in a key relationship, your head is sharp and clear and your heart is deeply in line with your thoughts. Everything you do or say comes back to you in equal measure so this is a reminder that what you are putting out there determines your overall quality of life in the future. You could find that you are taken out of your comfort zone and see things from a different perspective. By letting go in this upside down world you will find that you feel in more control of a situation that your heart is clinging to. When you let go of all the energy it takes to take control you will find that your own energy levels rise in compensation and your heart soon finds a clear way to express itself. It’s natural to want to grip harder to the thing that your heart clings to but remain flexible this week as it may take a different route to get to where you want to be. Something was not all that it was cracked up to be and this could leave you feeling that you still have more to experience or that things should be better, perhaps something has not yet blossomed into its full glory. You could be worried about losing out, something slipping through your fingers, don’t look back, focus on your goal and drive forward. Even if a relationship is not all peaches and cream by compromising and working at it you could find that rewards are bountiful. Seeing both sides of an event or issue will allow you to find a workable solution and this is the helping hand that the universe is extending to you. Your health is likely to improve as you are able to find a sense of calm amidst the chaotic emotions that have been flying around. You have heard words and promises before, this is the week to rise above any reasons and excuses and to get things done. Your passions and sensuality give you the edge in anything you do.

Between now and the end of the month represents an end to a chapter, the end also of a hard fought road that has the true potential to finish full and fine. Your thoughts and your conversations whether they are private or public have power and magnitude, speak with passion and your requests will be taken seriously. There September 23rd - is great wealth and potential around, but that's not going to be given without having October 22nd to work for it and earn it. That is something you must do for yourself.

Play by the rules and things will go your way, it is one thing to outsmart someone and another thing to feel all the way around what they are feeling so you truly know not just what they are thinking but far more importantly, what they are feeling. As you make your moves remind yourself that until you find yourself in another’s shoes, you do not really know the full picture. 2012 CONTENDERS FOR BEST PICTURE, ACTORS AND DIRECTORS

Now we all have to wait for the Oscars ..... and, judging by the nominations, the battle is going to be a fierce one in all categories. The nominees for the 84th annual Oscars have just been released and, once again, it looks like “The Artist” is going to scoop up quite a few awards, as it’s been nominated for ten! Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" is in the lead with eleven nominations – do you think he could win best director or picture? “Hugo” may be good, but there are lots of big pictures to beat. This year’s nominations for best picture apart from “The

Artist” and “Hugo” are the following: "The Descendants," "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," "The Help," "Midnight in Paris," "Moneyball," "The Tree of Life" and "War Horse." The prediction is that “The Artist” will win – however, “The Decendants” could be the dark horse. The battle of the actors this year is definitely worth tuning in for. With Clooney, Oldman and Pitt all going head to head, it’s predicted

that Clooney will take home the Oscar, but Pitt is hot on his tail. The ladies will also be fighting for the title of best actress, and though everyone seems to be terrified of Meryl Streep, as she always wins, all bets are on Viola Davis for “The Help”. The nominees for the supporting actors are Kenneth Branagh for “My Week with Marilyn”, Jonah Hill for “Moneyball”, Nick Nolte for “Warrior”,

In an interview with Heat magazine she said “I initially had a boob job because they were getting saggier as I got older. To me they looked hideous.”

suffered severe pain and scarring and her boobs “looked like they were exploding”. She is now terrified to undergo corrective surgery. “People should realise that every boob job has the potential to become a horror story” she says. A particularly relevant remark in view of the current outcry over substandard implants.

The final showdown of the evening will be “Best Director”, the nominees are Michel Hazanavicius for “The Artist”, Alexander Payne for “The Decendants”, Martin Scorsese for “Hugo” , Woody Allen for “Midnight in Paris” and Terrence Malick for “The Tree of Life”. Word has it that Hazanavicius is going to win, but keep your eye out for Scorsese.

Amicable split Not so

British singer Seal and his wife Heidi Klum have confirmed they are to separate after nearly seven years of marriage, telling the press that, “we have had the deepest respect for one another throughout

Christopher Plummer for “Beginners” and Max von Sydow for “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” – but all eyes are on Plummer for the Oscar. Octavia Spencer is a favourite for role in “The Help”, but Berenice Bejo may pinch it off her for her role in “The Artist” – how “Bridesmaids” made it in to this category is rather bizarre, and really Melissa McCarthy’s best performance was in the series the “Gilmore Girls” – not “Bridesmaids”.

The Chinese Year of the Dragon started this week and, according to a Taiwanese fortune teller, it could be lucky for some well-known names. Chan Wei-Chung is a celebrated media personality and soothsayer who traditionally makes predictions about the rich and famous born under the sign of each new year. Among the more fortunate “dragon people” he has studied this year are

actress Sandra Bullock (a possible pregnancy), veteran actor Al Pacino (who may be able “to turn away trouble with good luck”) and the red-headed Harry Potter star Rupert Grint (who has “helpful forces by his side... unstoppable connections in the rise of fame”). Not so fortunate may be Russian leader Vladimir

Putin who apparently this year has “a negative Treasure Star” meaning he could lose a lot of money.

Cervical Cancer Prevention Week: What every woman needs to know When Big Brother star Jade Goody contracted cervical cancer in 2008, her battle against the illness sparked a sudden rise in the numbers of young women going to be screened but those numbers have plummeted since she died.

Jade Goody during her illness

A recent survey for gynaecological cancer research charity The Eve Appeal showed women’s awareness of cervical cancer remains “woefully low”. During Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (January 22nd–28th), experts are trying to raise awareness of the illness once more – and urge women to have a regular smear test. Unlike many cancers, cervical cancer is a largely preventable disease. For under-18s the first step is to get vaccinated: since 2008 in the UK there has been a national programme to immunise

girls against the human papilloma virus (HPV), two strains of which are responsible for about 70 per cent of cervical cancer cases. A similar programme is also in place in Spain. The HPV vaccine does not guard against every form of cervical cancer, so the next step is regular cervical screening, also known as a smear test, where a small sample of cells is taken from the cervix for examination. Doctors recommend women between 25 and 49 should be screened every three years, and those between 50 and 65 every five. The

If left untreated, insomnia can increase the risk of developing potentially life-threatening conditions such as depression, diabetes and high blood pressure.

The typical symptoms of insomnia include having difficulty falling or staying asleep, or feeling unrefreshed after a night's sleep. During the day people with insomnia can also suffer from fatigue, have trouble concentrating and experience mood disturbances. The authors of the review, Dr Charles Morin from the Université Laval, Québec City, and Ruth Benca from the University of Wisconsin, Madison,

said insomnia can lead to "substantial long-term effects" on people's physical and mental wellbeing. They said people suffering from insomnia are more than five times as likely to experience anxiety and depression, and are at more than double the risk of developing congestive heart failure and diabetes. They highlighted a study which found that people with insomnia were seven times more likely to abuse alcohol or drugs. While many turn to over-thecounter medicines for the sleep disorder, the authors said there was "little evidence" of their effectiveness. According to the National Institutes of

Other signs include pain in and around the vagina when having sex, an unpleasant smelling discharge, pain when passing urine or, in the more advanced stages, blood in the urine, loss of bladder control, bone pain, leg and kidney swelling and weight loss.

A beer and a couple of tapas are not just enjoyable, they have the same nutritional value as the rest of the so-called Mediterranean diet, according to the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (FEN), a private Madridbased institution. Its report on the nutritional value of this traditional aperitif contains recipes, a table with the calorific and nutrient content of each tapa and the recommended beer intake to avoid developing a belly. Thus we discover that the pickled vegetables which are favourites in Andalucia and Galicia hardly have any

calories and are rich in vitamins A, C and B12, roughage and carbohydrates, while pescaito frito and morcillo are rich in minerals and vitamins that offset their cholesterol content. And the ubiquitous anchovy is a pleasant way of getting a daily dose of omega-3 fats. As for the beer that accompanies the tapas, men should stick to two or three cañas, and women to one or two. As beer is usually drunk in Spain with tapas and served in smaller glasses than the rest of Europe, it doesn’t go to one’s head quite so quickly.

Why your lips are chapped & sore and what to do about it

Insomnia ups serious illness & health risks

Unfortunately it’s a condition that all too often goes unrecognised and untreated, according to a review published online in The Lancet.

last step is to arm yourself with the facts because vaccination and regular screening are not 100 per cent effective. While there are no symptoms in the early stages, unusual bleeding is often the first noticeable cause for concern.

Tapas are good for you

Health in the US, only two treatments – cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and approved hypnotic drugs – have sufficient evidence to support their use for the treatment of insomnia. CBT uses psychological and behavioural methods such as relaxation techniques, sleep restriction, stimulus control, and education about sleep hygiene (e.g. diet, exercise, and the bedroom environment). In addition to being an effective treatment for insomnia, CBT does not carry the risk of side effects – a clear advantage over drug treatment.

When it comes to battling the elements, your skin serves as your front line of defense. But it's your lips that really bear the brunt of the attack from sun, wind, cold, and dry air.

When compared to the skin on the rest of your face, lips are the most vulnerable to drying out. In fact, research shows you lose up to 10 times more moisture through your lips than you do elsewhere on the face or body. Once moisture is sapped from skin cells, they become fragile so your lips develop tiny splits and cracks. These tiny tears are what make chapped lips so painful – heat, acidic food, even toothpaste can aggravate raw skin. A mistake many people make in the effort to treat chapped lips is scrubbing, peeling or biting off skin flakes. Picking at the already thin skin of the lips can lead to bleeding and severe discomfort, Your lips need a shield to stay in shape. A

I read with interest the letter from John O’Riordan last week concerning your letters from Kym Wickham about her time in Australia and how much he had enjoyed reading them.

to do and I will be staying in Sydney and Melbourne, just like your editor but won’t have time to go to Tasmania this time - not that I would miss that Airwalk thing anyway!

Well, just to let you know, I have found them enormously interesting and informative and, as I have relatives there am now planning my trip to see them for the first time since they went nearly twenty years ago and they are really looking forward to seeing me again. Australia sounds a wonderful place full of interesting things

My next trip, (yes already being thought about) will be taking in Adelaide and Perth then I’m thinking about Cairns and Brisbane. I have hardly travelled before but there’s a big wide world out there for me to see and thank you for inspriring me to go and explore it.

Living in an ex-patriot community that comprises various races and cultures, amusement never ceases. I had a meal in one of my favourite Spanish restaurants and a gentleman, also a regular, asked me: “Are you still happy?”. “I’m always happy,” said I. “Are you from Mexico?”, his wife asked. “From the Phillipines, born and bred.” “We’re from Indonesia”, she said. Oh well, we’re kindred souls, from the same racial group, Malaysia. Yes, I have lived in Fuengirola for many years, it’s my home, but I haven’t forgotten my roots and I still go to restaurants whose cuisine is similar to mine. And then, at the entrance to a supermarket, a Spanish gentleman with a begging cup asked if I was from Peru! I’ve also been asked if I was Chinese, Japanese, Korean and, believe it or not, Muslim. Now, isn’t life such a variety! Small pleasures that neither money nor material ‘affluence’ have ought to do with. The pleasure of overhearing an expat lady saying to her companion: “You can always tell who is a tourist and who is a resident.” Yes, indeed, our very wellturned-out extranjera ladies project a lovely image for our town and could be credited

Editor says: Hi Billy and I’m pleased to hear that you have enjoyed sharing my trip with me. You can find this week’s instalment on page 13 complete with pictures this time and I hope you have a great time visiting Australia. Just to let you know, one of our readers will be off to Thailand quite soon and has offered to write a travelogue on her trip for us so we can get an idea of what it would be like to visit there too. You’re never too old to explore.

with introducing fashion shows, more often than not, dedicated to various charities. And how about our Spanish ladies, eh? Always well dressed, well shod with immaculate hair-dos whether it’s granny with grandchild in tow, the professional woman in high heels and designer bag, a young mother pushing a pram or a matron with her shopping. Now, how about a couple of verbal bouquets? Firstly The News, celebrating its third successful year with up-tothe-minute concise, accurate and impartial news, with other papers recycling their news and yes, even copying its format. And the second to THESPA, the enduring, evergreen, English Speaking Players CENTRO DE IDIOMAS

Association celebrating its 33rd year. And to all the restaurants, bars, cafés along the coast striving to give good value and service to their clients in these straightened times. Editor says: Thank you Dominic for our verbal bouquet. There are many businesses of all types struggling to survive during this horrible and ridiculously long recession and we take our hats off to them all as do you. Charities and Societies are having it extremely tough as, when there’s no money about people have nothing to spare for those in dire need. So, if you have, literally any pennies, please put them in a charity box somewhere for those who may be less fortunate than yourself.

A

s you look at the Moon you will be able to see the crescent shape that is being lit by the Sun but you should also be able to make out the rest of the Moon’s face, much fainter but still visible bathed in a ghostly light. This is Earthshine.

I

f you have ever been in a very dark area at the time of the full Moon you will have noticed just how brightly it can shine and even light your way. The Moon’s surface is made from really quite dark material but can still shine brightly in the night sky. The Earth on the other hand is covered in white clouds, it has white polar ice caps and reflective oceans and it is also much bigger than the Moon. So for anyone standing on the Moon the Earth appears as a very large, bright beacon in the sky, much brighter than a full Moon can ever appear from Earth. The bright Earth lights up the dark areas of the Moon so much that we can even see it from Earth.

A

ll of the Apollo astronauts who went to the Moon have mentioned how overwhelmed they were by just how big and bright the Earth appeared, and, when they went to the Moon, it was obviously ‘daytime’ with the Sun in the sky too. Had they been there when the Sun was below the horizon then the Earth could have probably lit their way.

A

s the Moon keeps one face permanently turned toward the Earth then, as seen from the Moon, the Earth is constantly in the same place in the sky – it is only the phase of the Earth that changes as the Moon orbits us. When we see the Moon in its young

phase – as it will be tomorrow night– then the Earth appears full from the Moon and shines at its brightest.

M

ercury and Venus are the only two planets that don’t have moons. Mars has two tiny ‘potato shaped’ moons called Phobos and Deimos which are probably asteroids that were captured by Mars’s gravity. Jupiter has 63 moons, the largest of which, Ganymede is the biggest moon in the Solar System and is actually bigger than the planet Mercury. If you look at Jupiter with binoculars you should be able to make out its four largest moons Ganymede, Europa, Io and Callisto as they circle the planet. Jupiter is currently very prominent in the night sky shining brighter than any star. On 30th January the Moon will be just a few degrees above Jupiter.

S

aturn has 62 moons (and counting). Saturn’s largest moon is called Titan and even has its own atmosphere of mainly nitrogen gas. The atmosphere on Titan is so dense and the gravity so low that any future astronauts who land on Titan would be able to fly through the air by simply flapping their arms!

U

ranus has a family of 27 moons and Neptune has 13. Even tiny Pluto– which is no longer classed as a planet – has three Moons called Charon, Nix and Hydra. That makes a total of at least 171 moons in our solar system and almost every one different from the next.

Raikkonen impresses on track return Lotus team boss Eric Boullier and trackside operations engineer Ian Permane admitted they were impressed with Kimi Raikkonen after the Finn completed the first day of his return test with the team in Valencia.Raikkonen is spending two days at the wheel of a 2010-spec Renault R30 to get reacclimatised to F1 machinery after two years in the WRC, with the run in older machinery being allowed under F1's testing regulations.

Allroad Audi A6 Quattro A sparkling start to order books open soon the New Year

Audi’s off-road biased version of the A6 Avant executive estate car. It features chunky body styling, and steel bash plates to protect the underside when traversing rough terrain. To help you keep going, Audi’s Quattro four-wheel-drive system is available as standard, as is a four-level air suspension system, which can raise or lower the ride height at the push of a button. Initially there will only be a choice of one petrol and two diesel

engines, all of which are 3.0-litre V6 units. The 306bhp petrol unit is the current performance option.

Putting out 324 lb/ft of pulling power, it is enough to get this large, heavy estate from 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds. All three engine options are mated to Audi’s 7-speed S tronic twin clutch gearbox as standard. Offering the best of both worlds, the gearbox can either be left in automatic, or manual gearshifts can be requested via the gear lever or steering wheel mounted paddles.

The allroad comes with a vast options list, featuring heavily in technological add-ons. Night vision with pedestrian identification is one such highlight. It uses an infra-red camera mounted in the grille to scan the road in poor visibility conditions. If the system detects a pedestrian, they are highlighted on the in-car display. Further options include wireless internet access with Google maps, adaptive cruise control with automatic emergency braking and a touch-pad based multimedia interface with handwriting recognition. Order books for the A6 allroad will open from next month, with the first customer cars expected for delivery in the spring.

Top honours go to BMW tourer The BMW K 1600 GT has won the vote for the “International Bike Of The Year 2011 (IBOTY)” award. This was announced at a press conference given by the Belgian motorcycle magazine Motor Wereld at the Brussels Motor Show. The award for the K 1600 GT comes from an international jury representing 25 motorcycle magazines. The K 1600 GT

convinced the motorcycle journalists with its unique combination of comfort, performance and use of innovative technologies. The powerful in-line 6cylinder engine was said to offer power, refinement and lots of fun. The bike’s sophisticated technology – in addition to ABS, traction control and navigation system, an adaptive headlight and electronically controlled suspension with various modes increase active riding

safety – makes the K 1600 GT an incomparable touring motorcycle.

SOL Classic Car Club held their first run of 2012 on one of the most idyllic days of this wonderful winter. Club members gathered at La Ventilla, the cafe at the BP garage at the Puerto de Pescadores near Alhaurin Golf for a relaxed run up to the lakes around Ardales – where the scenery is always a delight but particularly so in the warm sunshine. There was a coffee stop for a break at Bar La Cantina on the lakeside and a subsequent roadside stop for refreshments as they turned for home just outside Alora, with stunning views of the town, its castle and convent. An excellent lunch at Venta Platero in Coin rounded off the day. Leading the headturning line of classics were run organisers Ray Holland and Carol Lindores in their 1983 2CV Beachcomber. The iconic “deux chevaux” Citroen was manufactured between 1948 and 1990 and the “extraordinary ingenuity” of its design was hailed as “undoubtedly the most original since the Model T Ford” according to a 1953 review in Autocar. Its versatility, economy and reliability made it popular with a wide spectrum of drivers although it often attracted far from complimentary nicknames – the Dutch called it “the ugly duckling”, the Spanish

On the previous Wednesday the Club held their Annual General Meeting at Venta Sol y

The indispensable Spanish Liaison post was once again filled by Nick Wadham-Sutton and Richard Joss continues as webmaster. In view of the Club's sound finances it was agreed to reduce the annual membership fee for 2012 to 25 euros for a single or joint membership. It was also agreed to reinstate the monthly technical meetings in addition to the monthly diner (held on 2nd Wednesday of the month) and monthly runs on the following Saturday. Mijas Masters 2012

C.O.G.S. at Calanova in the late winter sunshine Our first outing of the year took us to Calanova with our newly installed Captain Terry Birtles in charge for the first time. The course looked good and the views in the sunshine were stunning as always. Some of the players found the course hard to score on but, as always, some members proved that wrong. Nearest the pin on hole 8 was Mark Thompson. Nearest the pin in two shots on hole 15 was

Duncan Burrell. Longest drive on hole 11 was Barry Williams. The team winners with 105 points were Andy Macfarlane, Zack Sturgess, Gerry Owens and Nick Carwood. The days main competition results were, in third place with 33 points Brian Millwood, second place with 34 points was Terry Birtles – must be his new position. In first place with 37 points was Andy Macfarlane.

Terry’s Par Three competition was as follows. Hole 6. Ian Vaughan, Hole 13. Dave Williams and Hole 17. Barry Duran. I can´t remember who won the wooden spoon, sorry!

This year for the Mijas Masters we were lucky with the weather having only one day of rain and the rest of the time the sun was out and it was glorious. It turned out to be a good competition with some great games and we were fortunate to be sponsored this year by Lloyds International Bank. There were 47 mixed pairs and 34 mixed triples, and the games were played in a good atmosphere with everyone seeming to enjoy both the weather and the bowls.

Our next outing is to Cabopino on the 16th of February, details on our website: www.coinopengolfsociety. com or on the notice board in The Bistro, Sierra Gorda Coin.

Chris Rycroft for Mijas B.C. This game was a wonderful game for the spectators who were quite vocal in their support and admiration for this match. It was one of the closest games with the score at 12 ends being 12 for both teams and at 15 ends it was 15 for both teams and at 18 it was 18 for both, so they had to have an extra end. It was a wonderful game and Dudley and Dorothy won by one wood. There was a big cheer for both teams, it was a memorable match, well done to both teams for the

Slip Sliding to Silver On Saturday, Team GB won a gold and silver in short-track speed skating. Great Britain have won three medals at the Winter Youth Olympic Games after bobsleigh duo Mica McNeil and Jazmin Sawyers took silver on the final day. They moved up to silver from fourth place after the first run, in a race won by the Netherlands' Marije van Huigenbosch and Sanne Dekker. The second GB duo, Kirsten Emerson and Frances Slater, finished fourth in Innsbruck, Austria. On Saturday, Team GB won a gold and silver in short-track speed skating.

Messi Masterclass Malaga 1 - 4 Barcelona After last week’s debacle in Gijon, Malaga welcomed Barcelona in the hope of producing a better performance against the best team in the world. Malaga started ultra defensive but should have gone ahead early on. Isco tested Valdes from the edge of the box and from the resulting corner saved again from Isco's header and then smothered the rebound. The breakthrough for the visitors came on 31 minutes with Adriano's cross well met by Messi to head into the bottom corner. After the break Barcelona stepped it up a

notch. And on 48 minutes Alexis Sanchez scored after some poor defending by Malaga. Three minutes later Messi went on one of his waltzing trademark runs, ghosting past Malaga's defense to slot the ball home. Messi then hit the bar from 25 yards out but he was not to be denied his fifth hat trick of the season and on 81 minutes squeezing past Demechelis he slotted the ball home into the far corner. With four minutes to go substitute Recio's

shot was parried out to Rondon who finished well to give Malaga a consolation goal. Rondon and Seba then went on to have headers flash just wide but in the end Malaga were well and truly beaten. A win next week at home to Sevilla on Sunday at 9.30pm is a must. Report by Scott Forbes

In the final of the triples, was the team from Benavista B.C. Malcolm Greenwood, Barry and Wendy Pemberton played the team from Santa Maria B.C. Gordon and Margaret Kane and Murrey Johns. This game started well for Benavista who won the first few ends but the Santa Maria side came up and by the 12th end it was 15 for Gordon‘s team and 10 for Malcolm’s. Malcolm’s team was not able to catch up and Gordon, Margaret and Murrey took the title. In the pairs final there was Dudley Calder and Dorothy Pilsmoor from Miraflores B.C., against Pam Cole and

excitement a really fine game to end the Mijas Masters. The prizes were given out by Clayton Hopley representing Lloyds International Bank. who thanked all the team from Mijas who helped make such a good event and Roberto for organising the competition. There was a lovely buffet provide by the club and Carol Wright, who organised the kitchen and bar for the event. Jack Burrows Gold at Innsbruck

British Olympic Association chief executive Andy Hunt predicted a bright future for the duo, who won on the track where Britain triumphed in two-man bobsleigh at the 1964 Winter Olympics. He said on Twitter: "Mica McNeil and Jazmin Sawyers win bobsleigh silver. Brilliant, no doubt Innsbruck is just the start for these two!" In the boy’s bobsleigh, GB's Olly Bidulph and James Lelliott came fifth, 0.27 seconds behind gold medallists Patrick Baumgartner and Alessandro Grande from Italy and 0.10 seconds off a medal.

Ball fined £6k for Twitter rant at Corrie star Former Manchester City and England defender Michael Ball has been fined by the FA for sending homophobic tweets to Corrie star Anthony Cotton. The 32-year-old posted the insulting comment on Twitter during Cotton's appearance on I'm A Celebrity last November. He said: 'That f****** queer. Get back to your sewing machine in Corrie, you moaning b******.'The fine represents the highest the authority has ever handed out for homophobia.

Can Sergio finally emerge from the pack? You just can’t keep Tiger Woods from the centre of the golfing spotlight and the 14-time major winner is threatening a resurgent year after winning his own limited-field event at the end of 2011. But his challengers now are from a new generation of young golfers, the likes of Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer, in fact those first three are occupying the top three places in the world rankings and all from the UK. And this is why this week's opening event on the European Tour's "Desert Swing" in Abu Dhabi is such an eagerly anticipated tournament. Not only is Woods launching his season in the Emirate, he does so against the top four players in the world. It is a mouth-watering prospect to be played out over a fine course at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, probably for the last time before the event moves to a new venue at the stunning Yas Links course. The current venue creates quality victors like defending champion Kaymer, who is a three-time winner of the tournament, and this suggests a star-studded leaderboard will be challenging for the title come Sunday afternoon. Manchester City have yet to decide whether to appeal against the Football Association's decision to charge Mario Balotelli with violent conduct. But City's first-team coach David Platt hinted on Tuesday that the club will reluctantly accept the decision. Balotelli, 21, appeared to stamp on Scott Parker before scoring a late penalty to secure City's 3-2 win over Premier League title rivals Tottenham. "We are likely to be without a player for four games," Platt admitted.

Alastair Cook insists England can still rely on his opening partnership with Andrew Strauss as they try to recover from their dismal batting performance in the first Test against Pakistan.

the second day of the trial, the jury heard that Mr Redknapp kept his Monaco account a secret from his accountant for four-and-ahalf years and from his bank manager for five years and eight months. On Monday, the court was told Mr Redknapp received $295,000 which he had no intention of declaring for tax purposes. He was paid the "bungs or offshore bonuses" by Mr Mandaric, it was claimed.

He won the Castello Masters on his home course by an astonishing 11 strokes in October, finishing at 27 under par, and the following week triumphed in the Andalucia Masters at a far more exacting Valderrama.

Harry Redknapp 'kept Sporting offshore account secret' SPOTLIGHT

The Tottenham boss only revealed he had the Monacobased account after being asked by the Premier League's Quest inquiry, Southwark Crown Court heard. Mr Mandaric and Mr Redknapp, 64, deny charges of cheating the public revenue. hope so, because a tussle between Woods and players who head the world rankings would offer the perfect start to what promises to be a vintage golfing year. One player who will surely been keen to join the mix, and might just succeed this week, is Sergio Garcia. Still unbelievably only 32, he is embarking on the 13th full season of a lucrative yet still unfulfilled career. The Spaniard has finished tied eighth and in a share of 13th place in his two previous visits to Abu Dhabi and, like Woods, appears firmly on the comeback trail after his golf had appeared to be in a dangerous downward spiral. Garcia has won two of his last

Cook and Strauss scored just 33 runs between them as their side fell to a 10wicket defeat. England were bowled out for 192 and 160, Matt Prior top scoring with 70. "It's our job to lay the platform. We didn't do that in Dubai," Cook said. "(But) we can put it right."He added: "We made some poor decisions as a batting unit. To score runs you have to make good decisions over a long period of time and we didn't do that. "The beauty of the next game coming so quickly is that we can put it right."
