Described by a Spanish judge as "spiritual head of the mujahideen in Britain" the UK authorities have claimed Qatada gave advice to people who aimed "to engage in terrorist attacks, including suicide bombings". Despite the government's claim that he is a threat to national security, his deportation to Jordan where he faces terror charges was blocked by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) last week, effectively ending his six-year detention. The court reached its decision on the grounds that evidence obtained by torture might be used against him there. The UK and Jordan had previously reached agreement that he would not be tortured if he was deported. Liberal Democrat peer Lord Carlile, the government's former independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, said: "It is extraordinary that this man should remain in the United Kingdom.

ICKHAM’S

WORLD Manners!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

last week in this column you read that I had been watching “Whitehall” on the TV – I have no idea how it got to be that as, of course, the programme is called “Whitechapel”. I have also been watching, on a Sunday evening on BBC1 at 9pm our time, a lovely series called “Call the Midwife”. One of the stars is the comedienne Miranda Hart who plays Midwife Camilla Colmondley-Browne, otherwise known as Chummy – she’s positively brilliant. It’s usually a bit poignant and may very well have you in tears but, what a superb pìece of drama this is for once and well worth watching. One thing that struck me on Saturday morning was how badly mannered people are becoming. On our way out of the campo we were driving along a fairly narrow camino road and saw some people coming towards us on horseback. We pulled right over to the side so they could get through but did one of them offer any indication of thanks? no, and I know that at least two of them were English. Then, we have to travel over a narrow bridge. We were almost on it when a 4X4 forced its way onto the bridge and past us, nearly causing us to go off the road. The car had British plates. What is becoming of the previously polite Brits? I know times are hard for everyone but at least let’s keep up the British tradition of impeccable manners and dignity at all times. lose that, and what else have we got to be proud of being British these days?

€7 million in false invoices The Judicial Police estimate that the king's son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin, and his partner, Diego Torres, used false invoices amounting to €7 million, to empty the coffers of the Nóos Institute to avoid paying taxes. They arrived at that figure after hearing testimony last week from the people who worked at the Institute and its satellite companies. Urdangarin set up the non-profit making institute to arrange sports events and conferences for the regional governments of

the Balearic Islands and Valencia. He and his partner are now charged with skimming off millions of euros and diverting them to tax havens. Attorney General Eduardo Torres-Dulce said on Monday that no decision had been reached

about the involvement of the Infanta Cristina. The first five defendants to be called before investigating judge José Castro told the court in Palma de Mallorca on Saturday that she had only once visited the Nóos Institute and had never given anyone orders or made decisions.

Urdangarin, who is due to testify on February 25th, has asked Judge Castro through his lawyer not to allow his testimony to be videotaped by the court because he fears it will be leaked to the press. The judge has since ordered lawyers and prosecutors in the case to leave their

Moody's cuts Spain's credit ratings

- But leaders of Spain’s main unions are not in agreement. German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said on Monday that the Spanish government's proposed labour reforms show that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is determined to tackle the country's economic problems and put it back on the path to growth. He said the reforms would create more jobs in Spain, something the unions profoundly disagree with. After meeting Labour Minister Fátima Báñez on Monday, the leaders of the two main unions, Ignacio Fernández Toxo of the CCOO, and Cándido Méndez of the UGT, said the new measures would make it easier for small

companies with fewer than 50 employees to sack workers, and would destroy a lot of jobs in the short term. They considered the reforms were a sop to the financial markets and the rest of Europe. The two men said their unions' legal services are studying some of the

The European Commission is said to believe that the Spanish government inflated last year's deficit from 6 to 8 per cent in order to make this year's recovery look better, according to sources consulted by the Reuters news agency. The government categorically denies the accusation. The Commission is also said to be looking at the possibility of sanctioning the government for having delayed the presentation of this year's budget until after the regional election in Andalucia on March 25th which it said would delay economic recovery.

The unions have called a series of protests against the measures – starting on Sunday, February 19th – which they said could eventually lead to a general strike.

'Stolen children' to be given priority The Ministry of Justice announced last week that it will give priority to an investigation into the country's “stolen children”. The Public Prosecutor's Office has received 1,072 reports of new born children allegedly stolen at birth in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, with the last case reported in 1991.

The ministry intends to set up a team to follow up the reports, headed by prosecutor Ana Murillo,

BBVA issues gloomy job report About a quarter of the labour force will be out of a job this year and next as the economy suffers another recession, according to the BBVA's research department. At the end of last year, unemployment stood at 22.8 per cent, and in its latest report on the economy, the BBVA has predicted the jobless rate would rise to 24.4 per cent by the end of this year and to 24.6 per cent the following year. However, BBVA researcher Rafael

Doménech said that the government's proposed labour reforms should create stable and more productive jobs in the long term. He said the one bright spot is the export sector, which is expected to recover the levels seen before the crisis began three years ago.

Rainfall so far this winter is 40 per cent less than normal and this January – when only 21 litres of rain per square metre fell – has been the sixth driest in the past 50 years. February is turning out to be dry and the forecast for March is not much better. The weathermen are now pinning their hopes on wetter-than-usual weather in April and May.

Poverty rate on the rise Spain has the fifth highest poverty rate in the EU, after Bulgaria, Romania, Latvia and Lithuania, according to the latest figures released by Eurostat. In 2010, there were 11.6 million Spaniards at risk of poverty, out of a total of 115.4 million EU citizens in same situation. the According to Eurostat, “at risk of poverty” means those people whose incomes are lower than 60 per cent of the national average, those who suffer “serious material privation” (that is, who cannot afford to pay rent or buy certain basic goods) or those who have used less than 20 per cent of their “work potential” in the past year, not including students.

Luka Bojovic being arrested by Spanish National Police.

Serbian PM's assassins captured in Valencia National Police arrested Vladimir Milisavljevic and Luka Bojovic in a Valencia restaurant last Thursday in connection with the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic in Belgrade on March 12th, 2003. Milisavljevic is alleged to have used a telescopic rifle from a nearby building to kill Djindjic while Bojovic was allegedly the intellectual author behind the crime. Djindjic had made a lot of enemies with his reformist policies, but was even more hated for his crusade to send Slobodan Milosevic to the

International Court of Justice in The Hague to face war crimes. On Saturday, High Court Judge Fernando Andreu ordered the two men to be held in custody on weapons and other charges, together with two other wanted hitmen – Vladimir Mijanovic and Sinisa Petric – who were also arrested at the restaurant. Serbia is now asking for their extradition.

The operation was successful thanks to the use of the GnuWatch programme which can detect users sharing files with paedophile content. Police also seized 240 computers containing what they described as “extremely hard” videos of sexual acts with very young children.

Court drops Garzón bribery charges The Supreme Court on monday dropped criminal charges against suspended Judge Baltasar Garzón arising from a complaint that he took money from Banco Santander chairman Emilio Botín to organize a series of lectures at New York University. Justice manuel marchena decided the statute of limitations had run out and shelved the third case Garzón was facing at the Supreme Court. Last week, Garzón was suspended for 11 years for ordering illegal wiretaps of lawyer-defendant conversations in the Gurtel corruption case. madrid

Obama to tax the rich US President Barack Obama has proposed raising taxes on the wealthy in his 2013 $3.8 trillion budget plan. The proposal includes $1.5 trillion (£950 billion) in new taxes, mainly from allowing Bush-era tax cuts to expire. Republican leaders, who portray Mr Obama as a taxand-spend liberal stoking class warfare, have pronounced the budget dead on arrival. But in his budget message, Mr Obama said: "This is not about class warfare. This is about the nation's welfare." He added: "In the United States of

America, a teacher, a nurse, or a construction worker who earns $50,000 a year should not pay taxes at a higher rate than somebody making $50 million. That is wrong." His plan to allow George W Bush-era tax cuts to expire would affect families making $250,000 or more per year. The

president would also put in place a rule named after billionaire Warren Buffett to tax households making more than $1m annually at a rate of at least 30%. Mr Obama unveiled details of the $3.8 trillion plan in an address to students at a college in Virginia on Monday morning.

More arrests made for Romeo and Juliet hit the spot bribery and corruption Five senior journalists from the Sun Newspaper were among eight people arrested in connection with allegations of bribing police officers, public officials and serving military personnel. The other three held were a serving member of the armed forces, a female Ministry of Defence employee and a serving police officer from Surrey Police. The five were arrested at addresses in London, Kent and Essex on suspicion of corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906, aiding and abetting misconduct in a public office and conspiracy in relation to both those offences. All

eight arrested had been bailed by Sunday pending further police enquiries. Arrested from the Sun were deputy editor Geoff Webster, picture Editor John Edwards, chief reporter John Kay, chief foreign correspondent Nick Parker and news editor John Sturgis. They are accused of offering bribes for information to use in their newspapers. The mood in The Sun newspaper room was gloomy despite assurances from top officials that they have no intention of closing or selling the paper. However, Rupert Murdoch has made it clear that The Sun will not be going the way of the News Of The World. People have been

It was said by one pundit that “many journalists have been slipping a fiver to police etc for many years for the scoop on a story” adding that many times the technique exposed some very nasty conduct by certain people and has made it possible to bring such people to justice. Labour MP Tom Watson said that the enquiry goes well beyond just phone hacking and goes to the very heart of the ownership of newspapers. It is suspected that the further the enquiry goes, the more likely it is that not just News International will be found guilty but also the broadsheets until now thought to be in the clear.

A painting of Romeo and Juliet has been voted the most romantic work of art on display in the UK’s museums and galleries in a poll carried out by YouGov on behalf of the Art Fund.

71% of people who voted chose the painting by Frank Bernard Dicksee which is on display at the Southampton City Art Gallery. The painting shows the couple on their wedding night and the last time they will see each other alive. Second in the poll is Auguste Rodin’s The Kiss currently on display at the Turner Contemporary in Margate, Kent. And third was William Hogarth’s Before And After

Despite the sex change operation, as long as the overies and uterus are not

The Society referred him to GIRES, the Gender Identity Research and Education Society that provides information based on research into gender identity and intersexual issues, to help improve the lives of those affected. After the birth, the man got back in touch with the society to thank them for their help.

The annual cost of introducing the transferrable tax allowance has been estimated at 550 million pounds by the Institute of Fiscal Studies. The US has apparently started to turn round their economy by giving people money to spend rather than imposing austerity measures like the UK. This frees up more spending for the general public which many feel tends to kick start an economy.

Same man? Detectives think a series of robberies on two teenage girls, a woman and an elderly man were carried out by the same attacker over a two-hour period between 6 and 8pm on Saturday evening in the town of Datchet, Windsor and Old Windsor in Berkshire. The 71-year-old man refused to hand over his wallet and the attacker ran off. In the second attack a 17-year-old girl refused to hand over her mobile phone so the attacker snatched her handbag and made his escape and in the third attack a woman out walking had her handbag snatched by the man who again escaped in the dark coloured car. He has been described as black and travelling in a dark coloured saloon car.

Adulterating drinks a widespread practice Police began investigating the sale of adulterated drink in Malaga after irregularities were detected in several bottles of contraband rum to minors. However, Operation Resaca (Hangover) has revealed that the practice is much more widespread than originally suspected. Cheap rum, whisky and gin is sold to bars and other establishments in large carafes and then decanted

into bottles bearing brand name labels. It is also sold in individual bottles with false labels which do not carry the lot numbers that make it possible to trace the origin of the drink. Many bar owners deny

Plain clothes policemen who were helping the Local Police to man a traffic control point in Mijas last week watched as a young woman switched over to the passenger seat allowing her companion to drive the car up to the checkpoint. However, the uniformed men had been tipped off and asked both of the car's occupants for their driving licences. They initially denied having switched seats until the plain clothes cops stepped in. They were both fined and the driver lost two points off his licence.

A local newspaper recalled over the weekend a barely remembered visit by former Prime Minister Edward Heath to Marbella in February 1975. He had just lost the Tory Party leadership to Margaret Thatcher and fled the limelight in the UK, to surface 24 hours later in Marbella. The British media flocked to the town after a lucky local photographer snapped him walking along a street – they were much more interested in the loser than the winner, but he

refused to give interviews, brushing everyone off curtly, saying he only wanted to enjoy some sun in peace. However, local businesses were delighted with the wide coverage given to his visit in the British press and got together to give him a medal. He even got freebies. The guardia Civil were called in to collect the grenade which was found in potatoes imported from an area along the frontier between France and Belgium. Memo from

Voice Madrid

Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Hot air

T

he unions and the opposition parties are making a lot of noise about one aspect of the government’s proposed labour reforms – the clause that makes it cheaper to fire people by reducing severance pay from 45 to 33 days – and in some case, 20 days – per year worked. But the part that really gets the unions going is the clause that allows small companies to come to agreements with their employees as regards working hours, pay freezes, etc., which will help them to keep open. This, along with other clauses aimed at making life easier for small businesses and the selfemployed drastically reduces the power of the unions.

P

artido Popular spokeswoman Maria Dolores de Cospedal has described such reactions as “demagogy and lies”. She called on the unions to act “responsibly” but added that nobody can understand “how they kept silent for seven years, watching the number of jobless rise to more than five million during that time but are now protesting because workers and companies can decide how to save their future instead of closing down.”

A

s for opposition leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, Cospedal said “criticising the government for taking these measures amounts to cynicism without limits and also insults the intelligence of Spaniards because we remember the important role Rubalcaba played in the economic situation that brought us to where we are today”.

T

he reforms are for the medium- to long-term and it remains to be seen what effect they will have. However, the unions are already planning nationwide demonstrations – the first one this coming Sunday – and it will be interesting to see how many people turn out. Despite Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s conviction that the reforms will automatically lead to a general strike, the union leaders seem to think it’s a trap he’s laid for them and refuse to fall into it. They also know the country is in no mood for a general strike, as was proved by their pathetic attempts to stage one last year after Zapatero announced budget cuts.

An unbiased judge

J

udge Baltasar Garzón’s lawyers tried to stop the reading of a document during his second trial last week which referred to his refusal to investigate what was

Why Garzón should appeal probably the single biggest atrocity of the Civil War – the execution of some 4,000 prisoners by Republican militias at Paracuellos just outside Madrid in November and December 1936. In 1998, Garzón rejected a denuncia presented by the Association of Families and Friends of the Victims of the Paracuellos Genocide, calling it a “fraud” and an “abuse of the law”. He also said the massacre was covered by the 1977 Amnesty Law, the very law he tried to sidestep when he decided to put the Franco regime in the dock.

T

he trouble with Garzón and fans of the Historical Memory Law – passed to right the wrongs of the Franco regime – is that they refuse to admit the wrongs committed by the Second Republic, which started with the burning and sacking of churches – especially in Madrid and Malaga – in May 1931, five years before the civil war broke out.

T

he government in Madrid could not control hotheaded revolutionaries in towns and cities far from the capital. Both Right and Left were guilty of political assassinations in those years, which also saw an unsuccessful military coup attempt in 1932 and an uprising by the Asturian miners in 1934 which was expected to ignite the rest of the country and bring about the revolution.

A

fter the military uprising began on July 18th 1936, thousands of people were summarily executed without any pretence of a trial by the militias in the Republican-held parts of the country, especially in Andalucia and Extremadura. Priests, nuns, schoolteachers, store owners, lawyers, other professionals and small land owners (the big landowners had fled long before) all went to the wall because by reason of their social class, they were suspected of sympathising with the military rebels. When Franco's troops arrived, they in turn executed Communists, Socialists, Anarchists, trade unionists and ordinary working men. We'll never know how many of these people were involved in the earlier executions of “Franco sympathisers” because their descendants, even if they knew the truth, would never admit it.

T

he Spanish people will not be able to come to terms with the civil war until the truth is told about what both sides did during those bloody years. It also might help if certain politicians – and judges – on the Left stopped trying to keep the old hatreds alive.

T

he Spanish judiciary – as I predicted two weeks ago – is now under intense international pressure and global scrutiny. Last Thursday, the conservative justices on the Supreme Court bench decided that High Court Judge Baltasar Garzón should be suspended for 11 years after finding him guilty of illegally tapping phone conversations between several jailed suspects in the Gürtel public corruption inquiry and their lawyers. Garzón breached his bench duties and violated the constitutional rights of the defendants by ordering the jailhouse phone chats recorded, the Supreme Court says. The decision made headlines around the world. The 56-year-old magistrate, known for issuing his famous 1998 arrest warrant for former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and who may never serve on the bench again should he let this ruling stick, argues that the Gürtel suspects were using their lawyers to help them conceal and launder money they had obtained from the Partido Popular (PP) local governments in Valencia, Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha. Investigators later found that Gürtel heavyweight Francisco Correa, the alleged mastermind behind the massive kickbacks-for-tenders scheme, stashed away some €24 million in Swiss bank accounts.

U

nder Spanish law, Garzón cannot appeal his suspension; legislation doesn’t allow for elected officials as well as appointed figures to seek relief from a higher court bench. This legal flaw is the target of one of the biggest attacks this country currently faces in many global forums. Spain is a signatory of the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which, among other things, affords defendants in all criminal and civil cases the right to appeal their sentences. On January 17th when Garzón’s trial opened, the justices told the embattled judge that they didn’t have the authority to afford him the right to appeal because Congress had not changed the law. In other words, the justices, with so much power to tell lawmakers what and what not to do, conveniently put the monkey on the legislature’s back in this instance.

G

arzón is now looking at taking his conviction and sentence before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. He may even have a case before Spain’s Constitutional Court if he can fashion an argument that his sentence violated his constitutional guarantees. The legal battle isn’t over yet.

T

his high profile judge is also facing the possibility of another conviction – and even a longer suspension from the bench – stemming from a second complaint brought against him him for opening an inquiry in 2008 on crimes committed during the 1936-39 Civil War and the subsequent 1939-75 Francisco Franco dictatorship. That trial ended on Wednesday with testimony from a host of witnesses who, for the first time, were able to tell their story in a Spanish courtroom on how the Nationalist forces murdered their parents and other loved ones during the bloody conflict, which would become a grisly prelude to World War II. The obscure right-wing union, Manos Limpias, which filed the original complaint against Garzón, argues that the judge purposely overlooked the 1977 amnesty provisions passed by Congress to lay the ghosts of a violent past during the Transition following Franco’s death. Garzón correctly argues that there is no statute of limitations on human rights abuses.

T

he UN Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights, which normally doesn’t target a European Union nation in its concerns, expressed uneasiness “about the effect of the trial on the independence” of Garzón and other judges in Spain arising from this prosecution.

To uphold the rule of law requires an unconditional commitment to justice and human rights. In the context of full respect for the independence and autonomy of the judiciary, supposed errors in judicial decisions should not be a reason for the removal of a judge and, even less, for a criminal proceeding to be launched,” said the UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Gabriela Knaul, and the five independent experts of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, in a statement released on Wednesday. “No judge may fear to be independent in his or her functions.

While judges have to be accountable in the exercise of their functions, all measures taken in this respect have to be in conformity with the norms and safeguards, including the basic principles on the independence of the judiciary,” Knaul said.

T

he Garzón case is just another in a long line of judiciary episodes that not only question the safeguards of citizens but go to the heart of an even broader perpetual argument over how actually fair is the Spanish judicial system.

Back on the mainland now and a trip along the Great Ocean Road was in order. Part 1

There is apparently a rule in Australia about low flying aircraft not being allowed. Travelling first from Sydney to Melbourne, then to Tasmania and back on a rather nice little airline called Jetstar we could see just what they meant. You get to where you are supposed to be and all of a sudden you drop at a rapid rate of knots out of the sky, thwack the tarmac and the brakes are put on so smartly that everybody nearly ends up in with the captain at the front! With just two days to catch our breath everybody decided that we should have a little trip along the coast to Torquay, Janjuc and Lorne. The journey by car takes around three hours from West Melbourne and it’s mostly on motorways so the trip is easy.

We went past Sorrento where we had been before Christmas and then got to the Great Ocean Road which is Australian National Heritage listed and a 243-kilometre (151 mile) stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Warrnambool. The joy of this road apart from the stunning scenery is the fact that it was built between 1919 and 1932 by around 3,000 soldiers returning from the first world war to make sure their returning heroes had jobs. It is the biggest war memorial in the world. The road travels along the edge of the Southern Ocean and views are stunning. It also winds its way through rainforest as well as large and small towns for surfers and sailboarders.

You can ride a wave at Bells Beach, one of Australia's famous surfing beaches. You walk along a small track towards the beach and, to the left, is the place for the “amateurs” – turn right and you have to be a serious surfer. There seems to be great rivalry between the two sets of surfers with those going left striving in ridiculously cold weather to be able to be good enough to do that little right turn next time – and, er, no, I didn’t try it! On the other side of the track as the sun was going down we were able to watch around 50 wild kangaroos going about their business. The heat had gone from the day so they came out from under the shade of the trees looking for food for themselves and their joeys.

Use las muelas for the back teeth. And una muela de juicio is a wisdom tooth. Un empaste is a filling. Se me ha caido un empaste - A filling has fallen out. Of course you can have un empaste simple, a single filling or un empaste doble a double filling. Una corona is a crown and un puente is a bridge. Then, of course, there are all sorts of implantes - implants. Necisito una corona nueva - I need a new crown. And to ask if the dentist thinks you need a new crown you simply change how you say it, ¿Necesito una corona nueva? - Do I need a new crown? If you're brave - No quiero anastesia - I don't want an anesthetic Or in my case - No quiero sentir nada - I don't want to feel anything ¿Hay que sacarla? - Do you have to take it out? Quiero hacerme una limpieza - I would like to have my teeth cleaned Quiero hacerme una revision - I would like a check-up. And the all important question ¿Cuánto va a costar? DAVID THE DOGMAN: Buying a dog This is Luke, he is a male cross, two years old, height 58cms, weight 22kilos. Luke came to Fama as a pup after being rescued from the bins, where he would have died if a passer by had not heard his cries. He is a charming boy of excellent character, good with people and dogs and, even though he has been with Fama where he is loved and well cared for, he would love a home and family of his own. He would be happy sharing a home with another dog.

If anyone is interested in meeting Luke in person, for further information please contact Pat on 620 354 885 or visit the Fama website at www.f-a-m-a.net Unfortunately Luke is only one of many abandoned dogs wanting a family and home of their own so, if you don’t think Luke would suit you, why not pop along and have a look at our other dogs to find one to love. Fama never puts a healthy dog down, they have a home for life, or until they are adopted.

Piddling – Part 2 - The solution. In the meantime, how do we address the problem of wet, ammonia smelling carpets? When you arrive home or have visitors try to greet your puppy outdoors. It will squat and urinate, but at least it will do so on grass. Approach playtime, inside, with a lowkey, calm attitude or, better, take your puppy outside to play. If it does piddle on the carpet, calmly blot the wet spot with paper towels, slosh white vinegar on the spot and blot that up. White vinegar will kill the odour of both urine and faeces. And finally, rejoice. This problem will, in time, correct itself.

Administration of Tablets - part 1 Many drugs in tablet form, licensed for use in dogs, have been specially formulated with palatability in mind. However, if your dog is at all suspicious he is unlikely to eat the tablet voluntarily irrespective of how pleasant it may taste. Can I train my dog to take tablets? Yes, it is good foresight to train a puppy to accept tablets pushed down the throat. This is a useful technique to practise with a puppy using something pleasant like a vitamin tablet or a special doggy choc drop.

My dog has never had a tablet - how can I get them into him? Try subterfuge to start! Most dogs readily accept treats such as a piece of cheese or meat even if they aren’t used to being offered them. Try giving him one or two treats and then give one with the tablet pushed into the centre. You may be successful. Make it a game and a lot of the problems will be solved. If necessary push the tablet disguised in the treat down the throat. You say push the tablets down the throat. How do I do this? Remember that dogs quickly learn when it is tablet

part 4

time and may vanish from sight . First catch the patient! If possible try to get someone to help you to hold the dog. Depending on his size you may find it more comfortable supporting him on your lap if small or held between your knees if larger. Most people find it easier to approach from the side or behind when giving tablets. More in next week’s article.

The Costa del Sol is a lovely place to retire to with (normally) year round warmth and friendly ex-pat communities.

In this sort of weather, a lovely lie-in snuggled in a warm bed on a Sunday is just what you need. On Tuesday March 6th the Lux Mundi branch at Torre del Mar, will take friends on a coach trip to Loja and Rio Frio. Loja is situated in the Sierra Loja in the Province of Granada. The town dates back to prehistoric times and has been occupied by the Phoenicians, Romans and Moors. The Catholics finally conquered it in 1486. The visit will be accompanied by a guide who will take the group to see the Museo Historico de

La Alcazaba, Mirador de Sylvania and many otherhHistorical sites. Lunch will be taken in Loja and on the return trip there will be a visit to Rio Frio to see the trout farm. The price includes transport and insurance, lunch, and all entrance fees. Departure time is 8.45am picking up in Algarrobo, Caleta, Torre Del Mar and the parking area close to the Hotel La Vinuela. Unfortunately, there can be a few drawbacks. Excellent as the Spanish health care system is, there is a tendency to discharge patients much sooner than their counterparts in the UK. Once at home, people often have no one to help them through these delicate weeks, as their families are miles away, and perhaps their friends are incapable of providing them with the assistance they need. The News Help Desk was launched last Friday with much interest being shown. We at The News have been asked all manner of questions for many years and it seemed to us that there was a need for a central service where you can go as a first point of call if something is worrying you.

The News Help Desk will run on three days each week Wednesday, Friday & Saturday between the hours of 10.30am and 12.30pm and any queries we can’t deal with there and then, we will make enquiries about using an excellent team of experts that we have come to respect over several years.

You need never go hungry either, as they provide an excellent meals on wheels service with delicious home cooked meals delivered to your door.

Are you having difficulty managing on your own?

Help Desk launched! When you don’t know the systems in a country, even if you do know how to speak the language, living here can be not just worrying but downright frightening. So, what do we do? We bury our heads under the duvet and worry ourselves sick about how much it’s going to cost to sort out whatever problem we may have. Often, these things are easy and inexpensive to sort out. Back in Gibraltar after nearly 50 years ..... but sadly not with the happiest of memories! Former Royal Marines musician Gerald Miles spent a few precious moments thinking about the last time Written by he was on the Rock back on Christmas Day 1963. Clive Smith There was nothing to celebrate on this festive day because Gerald along with his colleagues had just landed 55 bodies from the fire stricken cruise ship The Laconia. One hundred and twenty-eight people died in the fire and its aftermath – 95 passengers and 33 crew members. Gerald and his fellow musicians were on their way to the Far East on board the aircraft carrier H.M.S.Centaur when they were ordered to join other ships in the rescue operation. Although 20 Merchant ships were soon at the scene of the disaster they were not allowed to retrieve dead bodies so the Centaur was summoned to carry out the sad task.

When not playing their instruments, the Royal Marines musicians take on the role of First Aiders and on Christmas Eve 1963 they pulled 55 dead bodies from the icy cold waters of the Atlantic which they duly brought ashore at Gibraltar on Christmas Day. “It was the one Christmas in the 76 years of my life that I will never forget, “ explained Gerald who paid a flying visit to Gibraltar this week....his first visit in 49 years. “Normally we are musicians but in sad times we have to revert to first aiders. But we had never been faced with such a horrific task as on this occasion. There were bodies bobbing about everywhere and our job was to recover all of them and take them ashore.

“We were all so upset we couldn’t speak to our loved ones back home in the UK as ringing home was not so easy in those days, especially from on board ship.”

“As servicemen we were mostly interested in the bars in those days and there were plenty of them in the main street – in fact every other building was a bar.”

Fortunately, Gerald’s previous visit to the Rock – back in 1954 – had been a lot happier. The musicians were on their way to the Far East and they called into Gibraltar for a week.

“I remember taking a taxi ride to the top of the Rock and seeing the apes and some of the tunnels but I was only 18 then and the bars were more of an attraction.

“That was a happy occasion as we hit the bars and restaurants and mixed with the locals,” explained Gerald who lives in Exmouth, Devon.

“Coming back after all these years has been a bit of a shock because although I have kept abreast of the many developments over the years to see the amount of reclaimed land and the skyscraper apartments for myself has been quite an eye-opener,” Gerald added.

“There is simply no comparison to Gibraltar as it was then and now but I can understand why it still remains such a major tourist attraction even with all the changes.

”There’s no comparison .... I remember the main

street, the Rock and apes but so much else is new.”

he played on that sad occasion.

He met up with well known Gibraltarian resident Roy Button who served for many years with the RAF and who was only too aware of the plight of the Laconia.

He is also proud of the fact that Gibraltar remains British. “There is no doubt about the Rock’s importance as a major military base as it controls one of the most important stretches of water in the world ... the Straights. Gibraltar is very British and so it should always remain,” he added.

Gerald, who recently celebrated his Golden Wedding with his wife Pauline, is proud of the role

F

rom here there are a number of delightful (and for the fitter, more strenuous) walks. You can buy walking guides with all the available routes marked from the Refugio or in the tourist office in Marbella or Ojen. For the less ambitious the route to the Mirador isn't demanding, the path is an easy one through pine and eucalyptus and the views over Marbella and San Pedro – some 1000 metres below – are breathtaking, on a clear day you can see Gibraltar and the African And looking coastline. down at you from on high is a statue of a mountain goat, whose family members can often be glimpsed jumping dizzily from rock to rock higher up the mountain.

F

or the serious hiker the Refugio de Juanar is the jumping off spot for the ascent of La Concha – which is said to take around five hours (I haven't tried this one myself!). It is apparently eight kilometres to the the top and you are advised to “take the necessary precautions: wearing adequate clothing, taking enough water and a mobile phone with charged batteries. In case of emergency, you should contact emergency services by calling 112 and stay in one place until you are found”. Sensible in view of the way the weather can change so quickly in these mountains. A feature of this trek is the old sandy “beach”, a remnant from millions of years ago before the continental plates shifted and raised the area some 3,000 feet.

T

he area is a wonderful one for wildlife. Birdwatchers can spend days with guides here. The pine forests are home to crested tits, crossbills, nuthatch, jays, short-toed tree-creepers (whatever they may be!) and several species of warbler. The olive plantations and open scrub hide woodlarks, redstarts, various buntings, hoopoes, wheatears and

shrikes, while overhead raptors – eagles, falcons, kestrels, vultures, buzzards and kites – can be seen at certain times of the year. It's a paradise for flora and fauna too. The botanist can search for an amazing variety trees and plants, including many types of pine trees while orchids can be found in spring and early summer, as well as aromatic plants, shrubs and grasses, dotted with butterflies and dragonflies. You need sharp eyes to see the genet cats, the martens and foxes but mountain goats are not as shy and lizards abound, snakes fortunately tend to remove themselves when footsteps approach.

I

f you want to enjoy the mountain air in a more relaxed fashion then stay on the main road a little longer until you see the sign for Shanti-Som on the right hand side. I recently discovered this “wellbeing retreat” on a sunny Sunday morning and was enchanted by it – surprised too since the last time I had been there it was a rather sad and shabby hotel. Driving down through the

pine woods you suddenly find yourself enveloped in the oriental, approaching a building constructed in Balinese style architecture under South African thatched roofs with a giant reclining Buddha between the two sets of entrance steps. Balance and harmony are echoed in the gardens around it while streams, waterfalls and fountains enhance the sense of tranquility. Walking into the beautiful marbled floored hall with its high ceiling beamed in iroko wood, its side tables decorated with orchids and carved furniture, smothered in cushions arranged to encourage relaxation, I could feel my pulse rate going down and an instant sense of peace. They say it is “a place were you will regain your energy and gain balance and focus”, sadly we only had time for a guided tour and a cup of coffee but were made extremely welcome and plan to return to sample the restaurant menu (which offers Amrita creative cuisine, delicious Asian fusion dishes) later this month.

Carnaval!

Though it seems that we have only just taken down the Christmas decorations Andalucia is back in fiesta mood with processions and parties as “Carnaval” hits the streets of towns and villages this month. Traditionally a final fling before the privations of Lent this colourful event livens up a normally rather gloomy and flat February with feasting and frolics. Malaga town's carnaval started on Sunday with a grand parade and runs for a week ending on Sunday 18th in the Entierro del Boqueron (Funeral of the Anchovy) when after a procession through the town centre the fish will be buried on the beach of La Malagueta, symbolising the death of fun and the beginning of fasting and praying. During carnaval the city streets will throng with costumed revellers – there is a fancy dress competition following the battle of flowers

in Calle Larios on Saturday night, hosted by the Carnival Queen and King Momo – with murgas (street bands), dancers and singers. Malaga is not alone is its celebrations. Marbella carnival runs until February 25th. Fuengirola's begins on February 20th as does Benalmadena's and Alhaurin el Grande's. But, as with most things in Spain, it is wise to check up with local tourist offices or town halls beforehand to discover exactly what is happening and when!

Elvis Tribute Johnny G will perform his tribute to The King on Saturday February 25th at the Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola. The show, which is for one night only, covers the life and music of Elvis Presley. It starts with the early years of gyrating hips and 50's rock 'n' roll and goes through to Elvis's movie years and the “1968 comeback”. Johnny G – possibly more well known to theatre goers as the actor John Gale, delivers authentic and enthusiastic performances of Jail House Rock, Hound Dog and Blue Suede Shoes, as well as Wooden Heart, Return to Sender and GI. Blues. The show moves on

The show starts at 8.00 pm and remember it is for one night only, so bookings are highly recommended Telephone 952 474 542.

New ideas at e Parrot in Fuengirola

The Parrot has a Danish chef and together they came up with a great idea. On Fridays there will be a buffet, with lots of delicious dishes such as salads, herrings, salmon, pork filet, and meat balls. The week before last they tried the menu out with invited guests. My husband and I were there and we really enjoyed the evening. In total there were around 30 guests and that is the limit, because The Parrot is not the biggest of restaurants so the atmosphere is always good. The evening was a huge success and now they will follow it up every Friday.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Star Wars: Phantom Menace in 3D By George Lucas, Starring: Liam Neeson, Ewan Mcgregor & Jake Lloyd In a galaxy far, far away...oh, no, actually in a cinema near you, it’s now possible to see just how George Lucas has managed to retro-fit the first of the six Star Wars movies with 3D. When 3D became the film technique du jour, Lucas announced 18 months ago that he was proposing to jump on the bandwagon, and split the fan base with the news. Purists greeted it with horror and of course most 3D retro-fits have resulted in a murky mess. But Lucas is a master technician, and the general consensus is that the 3D works pretty well, and for those who have

never seen the young Anakin Skywalker in the pod race there are some exciting moments. The expectation is that Phantom Menace and the other five movies will now capture a new, young audience as well as proving to be a tempting delicacy for older fans of the original films. There are many Star Wars lovers who believe that 1977’s Star Wars, 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, and 1983’s Return of the Jedi were a perfect trilogy and that the three prequels fell well short. And it is true that Phantom Menace introduced possibly the

silliest character ever in the shape of the irritating Jar Jar Binks. Critics of the original Phantom Menace struggled with the movie’s wooden dialogue – though it must be admitted that sparkling dialogue was never Lucas’s strong suit in any of the movies – and a leaden plot involving some boring row about taxation laws. But we got to see the seven-yearold Anakin (Lloyd) meet the young Obi Wan Kenobi (McGregor channelling Alec Guiness). Liam Neeson had gravitas as the noble Jedi Knight Qui-Jon, and we

discovered how R2D2 and 3-3PO met for the first time. And now we can see it again in glorious 3D. In the next two movies we saw how Anakin grew up, how he went to the Dark Side, and how he finally became Darth Vader. And if the very name sends a quiver of excitement down your back, and if memories of the action sequences in the original movies are vivid enough to want to see them all over again – but this time with a light sabre coming straight at you – then the 3D conversions will be right up your street.

Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure. After discovering a model ship carrying an explosive secret, Tintin and his friends find themselves in the crosshairs of a diabolical villain. West seems to be really good at keeping you intrigued while nothing happens – suspense is definitely his trademark, I am just hoping that his new movie “V/H/S” overcomes this recurring issue. “V/H/S” is due to be released in the next few months. It is about a group of misfits that are hired by an unknown third party to burgle a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape. They discover more footage than they bargained for.

There are no random events or coincidences happening now – there is a reason for everything. Your energy is focused on your personal relationships and a surprise is likely but more a case of being in the right place at the right time. You could be attempting to set something in motion and if you want this plan to succeed do not get sucked into any negative undercurrents. Your life is full of emotional breakthroughs as change occurs in all areas of your life. A new idea is brimming with potential and the energy can take off like a burning bush, so much so it can be impossible to shut off your brain, making sleep difficult. A totally new perspective may descend into your field of vision. You are finally going to be on the other side of a recent barricade as you have not only done your work but have found a way to set yourself free from an attachment to a certain outcome. A new outcome, even better, is soon to show itself. It is time to start your engines, be on your toes, ready to leap and take action as you are on the brink of an earning opportunity right now. This is a time for selfreliance when you need to depend more upon yourself, so focus on the moment and let the future take care of itself. Even if you are in a relationship there could be a deep desire to start something brand new so that all those initial feelings of new love come rushing back in. Enjoy this fresh burst of energy. Is someone else doing something that is being covered up? Whatever it is will be revealed soon enough. Beware of things that appear too easy or simple as these are likely to turn around on you and prove more complex than you originally thought. This is one of those times when you may find that others are more interested in telling you what you want to hear than the truth. There is no denying the true stirrings of your heart right now; you could not hide your emotions if you tried. Do not allow yourself to get caught up or distracted by the waves of feelings and emotions that may overpower your logic and reason this week, stay focused. For this very same reason, you'll also find others can be so caught up in their own wants and desires that they could not care less about the things they currently have. Don't be shy, speak right up and ask for exactly what you want as others are very likely to give it to you.

One thing is for sure, anything you do must be done with excellence and to the best of your ability, if you do that, everything will somehow find a way to work out for you. To give without expectation or gain but to give simply for the act of giving, unconditionally, straight from the heart has an infinite impact. FREEZING TEMPERATURES IN LONDON

It was a cold night for the BAFTAS but a warm reception for the stars … and The Artist sweeps the board at London’s Royal Opera House extravaganza The red carpet was, as usual, graced by a host of designer gowns, many strapless in spite of the winter weather. Michelle Williams, the My Week with Marilyn star, broke with tradition and wore a custom-made dress by Swedish high street retailer H&M. Her cream and black strapless frock was finished with a flower at the waist and she carried a matching clutch bag in the shape of a book. A tribute to The Misfits – Marilyn´s last film scripted by her playwright husband Arthur Miller – was embroidered on the front. Meryl Streep, who won the Best Actress award, chose a Vivienne Westwood outfit with a low-cut neckline but, unlike many of the

stars she was sensible enough to take note of the temperatures and wore a boxy-shouldered jacket. The Iron Lady turned into Cinderella as she tripped going up on stage to accept her award but Prince Charming in the guise of the debonair Colin Firth sprang to her aid, retrieved the lost shoe and fitted it back on her foot like the true gentleman. The Artist, the generally acclaimed black and white silent film was the real star of the evening. Nominated for 12 awards the film won seven gongs, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor. Jean Dujardin beat Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Michael

Fassbender to take the gong for the Best Actor, while Michel Hazanavicius scooped the Best Director prize. Dujardin said he was “proud and shocked” and apologised to his fellow nominees. The French star said he was surprised to get the award and paid tribute to his director, saying “Michel what have you done to me? It’s all your fault!” The Artist also picked up awards for best original screenplay, cinematography, costume design and music and is favourite to clean up at the Oscars later this month where it is nominated for 10 Academy Awards. The Artist swept the board at the BAFTA’s

Whitney Houston dies aged 48 Whitney Houston died in a fourth floor room at the Beverley Hilton in Los Angeles, California on Saturday at the age of 48. A police spokesperson said officers had been called to the hotel at around 3.20pm and following attempts to revive the singer, she was pronounced dead at 3.55pm. It has been reported that she had gone to have a bath and her maid and bodyguards began to worry after they hadn’t heard from her for an hour. Friends and family who had been with her at the hotel identified the body but cause of death has yet to be released. Her 18-year-old daughter was taken to hospital on Sunday night following her mother’s sudden death to be treated for stress. Unconfirmed reports have said that she tried to get into her mother’s bedroom once she heard there was a problem but was stopped by police from entering the room. Whitney Houston had been due to perform at record producer Clive Davis’ annual pre-event Grammy Awards party at the hotel. The singer was probably best known for her acting and singing in the film The Bodyguard

and particularly the song,”I Will Always Love You” written and first performed by Dolly Parton in 1974. Houston was one of the most celebrated female singers having won multiple Grammy, Emmy Music and Billboard awards. She came from a music family. Her mother was Cissy Houston, her cousins Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, and her godmother was Aretha Franklin. Her popularity was at its height during the ‘80s and ‘90s with one number 1 following another. However, the last ten years have been fraught with drug abuse, trips to rehab and relapses and in 2002 she admitted to using marijuana, cocaine, excesses of alcohol and prescription drugs. Trying to relaunch her career in 2009 she said that media reports in 2010 that she was again using drugs were “ridiculous” but in May 2011 she once again enrolled into a drug and alcohol rehab programme. Her body was taken from the hotel to the coroners offices for autopsy late on Saturday. Music Mogul Simon Cowell said: “ I am so sad to hear about Whitney. We have lost one of the greatest

singers of all time.” Other Whitney hits included “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, “Saving All My Love For You”, “How Will I Know”, “The Greatest Love Of All”, “I Have Nothing”. She sold over 150 million during her career. In 2009 she gave a performance on The X Factor which was slated by critics. Singer Jamie Archer said that she seemed aloof, distant and “a bit vacant” and not entirely at her best. Pete Waterman said that he felt that she had been led astray by her entourage. And her marriage to singer Bobby Brown spiralled out of control. She follows a long line of talented artists who have died prematurely. Writer and playwrite Bonnie Greer said she was generally very shy and fragile but, once she got up on stage, was one of the greatest singers and performers of all time. Whitney grew up in Newark, New Jersey and, although being groomed to be a star, was also very vulnerable during a

crossroads in American pop culture when rap etc was starting to show it’s face. She had been seen in interviews with Oprah saying that the drugs took over her every day and she didn’t care anymore about the music. 11-year-old Houston started singing in the Gospel choir at her local church. Civil rights activist Jesse Jackson said that their hearts were heavy after the loss of such a huge star

Six gongs for Adele

British soul singer Adele swept the board at the Grammy Awards this week, being presented with trophies for Album of the Year for 21 and Best Record for “Rolling in the Deep”. She also won Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Pop Vocal and Short Video. The 23-year-old had surgery on her vocal cords late last year and had been resting her voice on her doctor's orders until the music industry's biggest night when she stepped back on the stage for the first time since the op to sing “Rolling in the Deep” to a standing ovation.

A star for Macca The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has paid tribute to Sir Paul McCartney with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in front of the historic Capitol Records building in LA, alongside the other three Beatles. "Way back in history, in Liverpool, when we were kids and we were listening to Buddy Holly and all the rock-and-roll greats, I would have never thought that the day would come that I'd be getting the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame," McCartney said. "That was, like, an impossible thing to happen. But here we are today, and it's happening. Well, I couldn't have done it without, certainly, three boys. So, I want to say thanks to those guys: John, George and Ringo."

Hip replacement problems’ news Did you know that every year there are in excess of a million people around the world (primarily over the age of 60) who undergo hip replacement surgery? Usually, the people who decide to undergo the operation have been dealing with severe joint pain for years. This chronic pain can destroy a person's way of life by preventing them from enjoying what they used to enjoy most – morning walks with their spouse, playing in the garden with their grandchildren, fishing, golfing, etc. Although surgery is difficult, many times it is the only option. Hopefully, after the 1 ½ to 3 hours of surgery, 5 to10 days in the hospital after the operation, and up to ten weeks of intense physiotherapy and rehabilitation, the patient may be able to walk again without pain. Patients have enough to worry about between the surgery, recovery, and possible long-term and short-term risks associated with the operation (such as blood clots, infections, dislocation of the prosthesis, change of leg length, etc.), to worry about another complicated surgery afterwards if the hip replacement doesn't properly take or deteriorates. Unfortunately, close to 93,000 individuals who have received a hip prosthesis from DePuy Orthopedics Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, may be in need of revision surgery. Two of DePuy's orthopedic products, the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular System, were recalled on August 26th, 2010, after data from the National Joint Registry revealed that one in every eight people with these systems required a follow-up revision surgery.

If you or a loved one has received a hip implant recently, or within the last five years, and have experienced pain, swelling, or problems walking, you may want to consult your doctor to verify the prosthesis used. Symptoms that may indicate a need for a revision surgery include: • Loosening of the implant, when it does not stay in its proper position against the bone • Fracture of the bone surrounding the implant • Dislocation of the implant, when the two adjoining parts are no longer correctly aligned. • Metal toxicity • Irritation to the scar tissue • Unusual pain in the thigh or groin area • Changes to your eyes and hearing • Changes to cognitive function

DePuy implants consist of ball and socket components made of metal that rub against one another as the joint functions. These implants, also known as metal-onmetal implants, often wear down over time, leaving small traces of metal within the blood, bone, and muscle tissue. While these traces are often too small to detect, thousands of people have reacted to these particles which can cause swelling, pain, and even permanent muscle, bone, and nerve damage. If you have felt any of these symptoms, you should contact the surgeon who performed your hip operation. He or she should have a record of which prosthesis was used. They then may need to take blood tests, x-rays, an ultrasound or an MRI to

determine if you are in need of a follow-up operation. If you have received one of the recalled products but have not felt any symptoms or pain, you should still follow up with your doctor for the first five years after surgery, to ensure that the replacement continues to function properly. If you do not know the surgeon who performed the surgery or what type of prosthesis was used, contact the hospital where

the surgery took place. The hospital should have a medical record of the surgery and the prosthesis. Each prosthesis has a unique identification number and this should be in your medical records. The legal team representing DePuy have put together a comprehensive compensation procedure that can be complicated and it is recommended that you seek independent legal advice before proceeding

with any further surgery. A support group sponsored by medilink a local health care company has been formed here on the Costa del Sol to assist people who have one of the affected prostheses. The group was started by someone who has first hand experience and is in the process of recovering from her third hip revision. Name supplied I have belatedly read your article regarding the proposed plan of Jose Antonio Griñan of the Junta de Andalucia to legalise a large number of 'illegal' properties in Andalucia in the coming year. The number generally referred to is in the region of 60,000 although I would anticipate it will be far less than this at the final count as PSOE are well-known to exaggerate and greatly inflate these figures for their own political advantage – not that PP are any better. The reason I write is to ask if you know, or indeed have any interest in knowing what has occurred and is continuing to occur in Chiclana de la Frontera with regard to the reclassification of land and property problems as I have seen no mention of it? The head of the Urbanismo department of Chiclana Town Council, Andres Nuñez a lawyer who is paid a great deal of money to make urbanistic decisions as the

Chiclana de la Frontera

PP councillor for Urbanismo decided he was unable to make one regarding the reclassification of land of Chiclana, especially as he had only discussed the matter with his own colleagues of the PP party and had not had an open debate within the council chambers with members of other political parties, the federations or N e i g h b o u r h o o d Associations. As the PGOU of Chiclana has been thrown out by the 'Tribunal Supremo' – The Supreme Court – Chiclana has reverted to the Normas Sustantivas of 1987 and Nuñez then gave the land re-classification 'problem' to the Junta de Andalucia to sort out, which they did in agreement with Nuñez as head of Urbanismo de Chiclana. Unfortunately much of the land previously classified as in areas due to be urbanised now find that they have been changed to white land. These areas contain many

hundreds if not thousands of homes that if necessary can now be demolished. Our own property is one such and has also been included in a flood-plain –incredibly, it sits on the top of a hill, is one of the highest situations around and if it floods the remanider of Chiclana will be under approximately seven metres of water! Fanciful ideas on my part? I wish they were but I have this information 'straightfrom-the-horses-mouth' so to speak – from within the council itself from a previously tried and tested source. The council in Chiclana is rotten to the core as previous ones have been and would steal your eyeballs if you stood still long enough. Local businessmen have to financially support one of the two main political parties at election time or they know they will never receive another council contract should their business so depend on it.

Our energy supplier EDF has decreed that we should have ten, 'red days' over the last two frozen weeks, meaning that those of us who live on the Old Age Pension can afford to use electricity only very sparingly. We retired to bed at three o'clock this afternoon, when my husband found that crouching over our log-burner became too much strain on his back. The only room we can afford to keep warm is our bedroom, where we can use our electric blanket plus a paraffin stove for warmth. My husband served his country during the war,and worked all his life thereafter without claiming a day's unemployment benefit. He finally retired at seventy, and was actually proud that he had

had the foresight to take out a policy with such a wellrespected company. You will perhaps guess that we are Equitable Life Annuitants. We probably should have claimed for the winter heating allowance before we left UK sixteen years ago, but at the time we lived in a centrally heated home, and felt we did not need any extra allowance. We do not expect privileges not granted to other elderly British citizens; but are exceedingly bitter that we are excluded from allowances which are readily available to other Brits. Please keep up your good work! Brian Cave works on behalf of British pensioners residing all over Europe and has sent us this letter from an elderly couple living in France.

e Retrograde of Mars The planet Mars makes a return to the night skies this month after an absence of almost two years.

M

ars is the fourth planet from the Sun at an average distance of 128 million miles and it is the second smallest planet in the Solar System, only Mercury is smaller. And out of all the planets Mars is the one we tend to see less of because of its orbital properties. Mars takes 686 days to orbit the Sun compared to our 365 days so a Martian ‘year’ lasts almost two Earth years.

I

magine that we are looking down onto the Solar System from above with the Sun at the centre of a giant clock and we start Mars and Earth off together at the twelve o’clock position. All the planets orbit around the Sun in an anti-clockwise direction, so when the Earth has gone half way round its orbit to the 6 o’clock position Mars has only moved to 9 o’clock. When the Earth completes one full orbit and returns to its starting point of 12 o’clock then Mars is half way round its orbit and is now on the other side of the Sun at 6 o’clock.

B

y the time we get to the 6 o’clock point Mars has moved again, it is now at 3 o’clock so we are forever playing catch-up with Mars. It’s only after two years of chasing that we finally catch up with Mars before we overtake it again on the inside. And it’s now that something very strange appears to happen to Mars – retrograde motion.

A

s we observe the outer planets over a series of weeks they all appear to be moving from right to left against the background stars as they slowly make their way in their respective orbits. But as we overtake them then, for a few

weeks, they seem to change direction and appear to be moving in the opposite direction from left to right. If you think about when you are travelling along a motorway and you overtake another slow moving vehicle then as you pass it, it appears to be moving backwards – this is retrograde motion and it is most clearly demonstrated with Mars. Over the next few weeks Mars is in retrograde motion and will be seen to move backwards along almost the entire length of the constellation of Leo.

O

k, so firstly let’s find Mars. Mars rises due East at around 9.15 in the evening. Look for the constellation of The Plough – this is the one that looks like a giant saucepan with three stars making up the curve of the handle of the saucepan and another four stars forming a crooked square bowl of the saucepan. At the moment The Plough is standing up on its handle. The two uppermost stars are called the Pointers, if you follow them in a straight line to the left then they point to the North Star but if you follow them in the other direction to the right then they point to the Star Regulus in Leo the Lion.

D

irectly below Regulus near to the tail of Leo you will find Mars shining brighter than any other stars in the area and a vivid red in colour. Now if you keep watching Mars over the coming months it will gradually move closer to Regulus until April 12th when it will change direction and begin moving back towards the tail of Leo arriving back at the same point on June 20th.

The documentary “Senna, has won two of the prestigious BAFTA awards. Nicolai Winding Refn´s “Drive” was nominated for best movie, but the real winner in the documentary section, was the epic “Senna”, which took two of the coveted BAFTA statues home, Best Documentary and Best Editing. The movie was nominated in the same category as Martin Scorsese´s film about the life of George Harrison and the very moving “Project Nim”. “Senna” was released in 2010, 16 years after his death .

of torque. The diesel is a 130PS 1.7 CDTI turbo with 300Nm of torque. Both the 1.4 Turbo and the 1.7 CDTI can be combined either with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions.

Vauxhall’s new Mokka Vauxhall’s new small SUV will take the company into new market territory when it’s unveiled at The Geneva motor show. The new model – called Mokka – will enter the growing sub-compact SUV B-segment, and even at just 4.28 metres long can accommodate five adults in comfort. The Mokka will be available with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive system automatically and

seamlessly transfers power to the wheels that need it most when grip levels are tested to the extreme. Power is provided by three efficient engines, all equipped with fuel saving Start/Stop technology. The petrol range comprises a 115PS, 1.6-litre naturallyaspirated engine or a 140PS 1.4-litre Turbo with 200Nm

The new generation Vauxhall front camera system is available, giving the driver access to a number of functions including Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Alert (FCA) and second generation Traffic Sign Recognition. Muscular and attractive, the Mokka incorporates Vauxhall’s signature ‘blade’ on the body side, sweeping towards the rear. The Mokka’s rugged character is reinforced by its higher ground clearance as well as a 1540mm track. Its robust looks are further enhanced by 18inch alloy wheels which are standard on most models. The Vauxhall Mokka will be available at Vauxhall dealerships towards the end of 2012.

General Motors warns of 'horrendous' losses Fears for thousands of British jobs and the future of Vauxhall’s UK car plant have surfaced after bosses at US parent company General Motors warned of ‘horrendous’ losses in Europe to be announced next week.

An Opel factory at Bochum in Germany has also been cited for potential closure.

they are ‘deeply concerned’ and say it would be a massive blow to the UK economy.

Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port factory, which employs 2,100 people might be closed as General Motors attempts to reconcile losses.

Executives of the American car giant in Detroit say they are considering closing the Ellesmere Port factory in Cheshire as part of a major restructuring of its Vauxhall/Opel operation as it prepares to announce fourth quarter losses in excess of $300million (£190million).

Executives say that there is overcapacity in Europe and that plant closures are ‘inevitable’. Bosses in Britain admit that ‘everything is on the table’ and are discussing cost-cutting measures with unions.

A Vauxhall source said: “Everything is on the table. That includes plant closures. But nothing has yet been decided. Unions are being included in discussions. It is serious.”

Sol Classics F1 trip to Jerez Well the F1 pre-season practice at Jerez has come and gone. A small but enthusiastic group from the Club went down to watch last Friday and a good time was had by Qasim and Hebbi, Richard, Bob and Nick. The journey was around two hours each way, but the “new” road from Los Barrios to Jerez made the trip shorter and easier. Nick’s prior experience got us in there and SatNav got us back out! It was only 10€ for parking and a grandstand seat out on the circuit, with an extra 10€ to sit in the stand opposite the pits. We reckon there must have been around 20,000 spectators and we were swallowed up by the crowd. It was very warm, very noisy and sometimes a bit confusing. Unlike a race where all the teams have the same agenda, here each team was doing it’s own thing – some trying different tyres, some doing long fast stints, some trying new parts. However, there was always something to see with a constant procession in and out of pit garages. But teams were understandably shy at this early stage of the season – blinds were much in evidence and anything that broke down went under covers quicker than a Test match pitch in the rain. This track, rather old fashioned by today’s standards, allows you to get up close to the cars – in places just a few yards away. The noise of an F1 car at full

pace down the pit straight has to be heard to be believed . As far as the racing goes we saw some very rapid laps from Hamilton and Vettel – to me, Red Bull and McLaren still look the teams to beat. I thought their pace was visibly faster and they were driving tighter lines through the bends than most others seemed to be able to manage. Different teams were practising on different days and by Friday there was no sign of some of them

including Mercedes. Ferrari were the disappointment of the day – Alonso got a healthy cheer each time the crowd saw him, but in the end all we got were just five laps in three outings. Others, perhaps more reliant on sponsors’ money, like Caterham, Renault and Toro Rosso, kept us entertained with 20-30 laps each. Report by Richard Joss www.solclassiccarclub.net

Malaga get back to winning ways Malaga 3 - 1 Mallorca After Monday's bad defeat at Granada and a week of criticism in the press, Malaga knew only a win would sufice in their quest for European football. But Malaga suffered the worst start possible after just four minutes when a free kick set up Pereira to fire home from 30 yards, with Caballero in goal left looking a bit flatfooted. The goal seemed to be the spur Malaga needed and they started to take charge

of the game. The equaliser wasn’t long in coming and after 11 minutes Rondon's shot was parried out by the Mallorca keeper and there was Seba to finish well. Malaga continued to dominate the first half but had to wait until the 54th minute to take the lead. A cleared corner fell to Toulalan and his strike went in via a deflection, 21 to Malaga. Aouate in goal was keeping Mallorca in the game denying Isco and Sanchez, but after 69 minutes Rondon made the

game safe for Malaga. Sanchez fed Rondon in the box and he swivelled to fire in a fine goal. The rest of the game was played with Malaga in full control but failing to boost their goal difference. A great three points which moves Malaga to joint 6th in La Liga. A win against Athletic Bilbao next Sunday would be good! An emotional moment’s silence for former Malaga director José Carlos Pérez

Dramatic final victory as Zambia win shoot out Zambia lifted the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time after beating the Ivory Coast 8-7 in a dramatic penalty shootout in Sunday's final in Libreville. Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba missed a penalty in the second half of regulation play as the match ended scoreless after extra time. The team’s coach, Hervé Renard, had only one explanation: “There was a special spirit with us,” he said. “It was written in the sky.” Renard, a Frenchman, had used this spirit from the very start. He has twice worked for the Zambian federation, and was hired for the job by Kalusha Bwalya, the only surviving star of the country’s most famous, and most blighted, team. Now

the president of Zambian soccer, Bwalya was not on the military plane that crashed into the sea off the coast of Libreville, Gabon, killing all aboard in 1993. He was not there because, as a player with P.S.V. Eindhoven, he was taking his own flight from the Netherlands. But Bwalya, or Kalusha as most Zambians know him, was on the beach of Libreville on Thursday to lead the “boys” as they honoured the team many of them were too young to know. Right or wrong in terms of emotional risk just three days before the final, Bwalya, Renard and all the players walked as close as they could to where the plane came down, said their prayers and scattered flowers on the waves.

Rafael Cabrera-Bello was the surprise winner of the Dubai Desert Classic Sunday after sinking a nerveless birdie on the 17th hole to end on 18 under par and beat Lee Westwood and Scottish veteran Stephen Gallacher by a single shot. The unfancied Spaniard, 27, had started the day one stroke behind overnight leader Westwood, but made three birdies on the back nine to clinch his second European Tour title, belying his lowly world ranking of 119. Westwood had started the day on 15 under, one shot ahead, while Ulsterman Rory McIlroy and Germany's Martin Kaymer, who sandwich him in the world rankings, were two strokes behind. The two Brits had hoped for tougher conditions to

make the Majlis course bare its teeth following a birdie bonanza on the tranquil opening two days and they got their wish on the final round as swirling gusts of wind buffeted the fairways.

Westwood, though superb from tee to green, failed to convert a flock of birdie chances. And though very firm, Dubai's heavilygrained putting surfaces were deliberately slowed to allow for the wind, and ‘Westy’ is a notoriously streaky putter. So instead of forcing his way into another Desert Classic play-off (Westwood was beaten in sudden-death by Miguel Angel Jimenez here in 2010), he had to settle for a final-round 70 and a share of second with Stephen Gallacher (69) on 17-under, one behind Cabrera-Bello.

Wolves have sacked boss Mick McCarthy following Sunday's 5-1 home thrashing by Black Country rivals West Brom. McCarthy has been in charge at Molineux since July 2006 but his side have won only one of their last 13 matches. "Mick McCarthy has done a fantastic job but if we continued in this way we were definitely going to be relegated," said Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey. "The trend was only going one way and when we lost 5-1 at home to West Brom we had to act," he added. "This has been a

Rangers Football Club enters administration This means the club will be docked an immediate 10 points in the Scottish Premier League. It follows an unsuccessful legal bid by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) at the Court of Session in Edinburgh to appoint its own administrator. London-based firm Duff and Phelps was appointed by Rangers at 14:50. It will now take over the day-to-day running of the club while addressing its massive debt problems.

Lefty outduels Tiger at Pebble Beach PhilMickelson has won the Pebble Beach National ProAm for the fourth time to deny playing partner Tiger Woods a chance at his first official PGA Tour victory in more than two years. The 41-year-old American fired a final round eight-under par 64 for a 17-under total of 269, winning by two strokes and ending the hopes of Woods, who closed with a threeover 75. "It feels amazing," Mickelson said. "Hopefully this is one of a few I will win this year because I am starting to feel pretty good." Third round leader Charlie Wi of South Korea was second after shooting a even-par 72 to finish on 271 with American Ricky Barnes (67) a further two shots back on 273. Mickelson outduelled Woods by getting off to a quick start with a superb opening stretch of one eagle and three birdies in his first six holes and then saving par twice by sinking two long putts on the back nine. Mickelson, who got off to a rocky start this season, picked up $US 1.15 million in first-place prize money in posting his 40th career

PGA triumph and first victory since the Houston Open 10 months ago. It was the 30th time the two US golfing giants have gone head-to-head, with

Mickelson at 5-0 against Woods in their last five meetings in a final round. Overall they are even at 1313-4 in head-to-head contests.

England captain Alastair Cook was delighted to put a "frustrating" Test series whitewash to Pakistan behind them with a 130run win in the first one-day international in Abu Dhabi. Cook led the way with 137, while there were also good performances from Ravi Bopara (50) and Steven Finn (4-34).

And, once Finn ripped out Pakistan's top four inside nine overs with a devastating new ball spell, the tourists were always on course for victory.

British giant joins Harlem Globetrotters Paul 'Tiny' Sturgess has become the first Brit - and the tallest ever player - to join the Harlem Globetrotters, the legendary New York basketball team famous for their showboating and trick shot displays. And at an incredible 7'8" he is not only the tallest Globetrotter, but is also recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest professional basketball player in the world, ahead of 7'6" Chinese legend Yao Ming. Tiny – who says he earned his nickname "because I make everyone else look tiny when I step on to the court" – was a decent footballer in his youth in Loughborough, and is also a keen golfer whose 360-yard drives dwarf anything seen in the professional game.

Carlos Tevez will resume his Manchester City career despite accusing Roberto Mancini of treating him "like a dog" in the incident that sparked their rift. Tevez is to return to Manchester from Argentina, where he has been without City's permission since 7th November. The Argentine has not played since boss Mancini accused him of refusing to come on against Bayern Munich in September. He claimed Mancini insulted him but on Monday he said: "I am ready to return, to win and do the best for the club."

FOOTBALL

Better late than never Sunday's series of apologies from Liverpool following Luis Suarez's refusal to shake Patrice Evra's hand at the weekend suggest the club and their American owners have finally got the message. But many would argue it has taken John Henry and Tom Werner way too long to realise the damage being done to the club. In fact, it says a lot about the global nature of the Premier League that it took a couple of critical pieces in US newspapers for Henry and Werner to demand a bit of contrition from Suarez and Kenny Dalglish.
