Labour reform sparks protests Thousands of people marched peacefully in 57 cities across ASPHALT AND BLOCKPAVING Spain on Sunday to protest the government's labour reforms FOR ALL

The government, however, was not moved by the protests or crossparty opposition to the reforms. The Partido Popular's deputy leader, Maria Dolores de Cospedal, said on Monday that the protests were not a “majority response”, notin g that the PP had received a reformist mandate from an immense majority of Spaniards in the November 20th general election. She said the government is determined

to carry out “an authentic overhaul of the labour model in this country, even though it is not popular”. While the new law makes it cheaper and easier to fire workers it also creates more flexibility by allowing companies to ignore collective deals on wages and conditions in order to reach agreements with their staff that will keep

ICKHAM’S

WORLD Manners part 2!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

Last weekend practically everybody on La Carreta in Coin was kept awake for two nights by one of the houses having a party with noise from music systems that seemed to be cranked up to around 1000 decibels. So, before anybody else asks me, no it wasn’t the usual suspects that were at it. They had loads of cars all over the place, and around what seemed like a million teens and twenty-somethings having a great time at everybody else’s expense. now, before you all say, silly old fart – get a life, I think that parties are fine, as long as you have the courtesy to crank right down the volume by 2am. That’s what is called being reasonable but keeping all your neighbours up for 48 hours is simply not on – some of us have to work for a living and actually need to get some sleep! We have now started working on The news Help Desk so have a look at the advert on page 14 and a piece about what we’re doing on page 16 maybe we can help you with something? The Tamisa Golf Hotel has re-opened after their holidays so keep looking at what “dos” will be up and coming in the Out and About pages from next week. Also, I note that La Risa at Lauro Golf are holding a Diamond Jubilee celebration. It’s a bit of a way off but I’d book your tickets now as the food is delicious, the venue isn’t huge but it is very nice and tickets go fast! See their advert on page 19 for details to book.

Defenders of the law complain that the unions and opposition parties are concentrating on the one aspect – easier firing – that will frighten people into supporting the protests and eventual strikes and that the media and government should do more to get its more positive aspects across to the general public. The unions claim that the reform has already had some visible effects in the the hospitality sector where employers have already imposed wage cuts. While the government insists the reform is “fair, good and necessary”, the leader of the main opposition Socialist Party, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, called it “unfair, unnecessary and ineffective,” on Monday and said his party would seek its complete amendment in parliament. The Izquierda Unida (United Left) has called it a “weapon of mass

could have been “excessive”. The trouble began last Wednesday when secondary school students gathered outside their school to protest against the regional government's cuts in education. One student was injured when police broke up the protest. On Monday, a bigger protest outside the same school paralysed traffic for hours as students and police battled it out. Seventeen students were arrested and some 20 were injured. The police said later they had been provoked by the students' insults. At press time, no details were available about the protest which started up again on Tuesday.

destruction of jobs and rights.” Meanwhile, in an article titled “Spanish practices”, The Economist warned last week that the success of the reform will depend on whether the labour unions choose to protect jobs or maintain the levels of their members' salaries. The magazine called the reform a “hodgepodge” of measures that give the economy “tools to try to survive within the euro” since it allows an “internal devaluation” through a drop in salaries. The Economist said it was necessary to change the labour laws which “go back to the Franco era” and have condemned “half of the working population to go on the dole or do temporary work”, while the other half enjoys “armourplated contracts”. The Economist said the reform “blurs” the line that divides the Spanish labour market in two which “will allow more people to achieve job stability”.

Cameron is asked for 'constructive' dialogue During his first visitor as PM to the UK, Mariano Rajoy was received on the steps of Number Ten for a discussion focused on the economic crisis and the future of Gibraltar. After a working lunch, the two PMs visited the Crossrail works, the new underground railway lines in which Spanish constructors are involved. Government attacks protests

King's son-in-law arrives for trial Iñaki Urdangarin landed in Madrid on an American Airlines flight from Philadelphia on Tuesday, on his way to make a statement in a Palma de Mallorca court on February 25th. His lawyer, Mario Pascual Vives, has confirmed that Urdangarin will speak to the press after his appearance in court although he added he did not know where or when. The judge will question Urdangarin about the contracts his Nóos Institute was given by both the Balearic and Valencia regional governments to organise sports and tourism conferences. The non-profit entity received some €6 million from them between 2003 and 2006, and prosecutors suspect that

much of the money was diverted to Urdangarin's private companies.

His former friend José Luis "Pepote" Ballester, who served as the Balearics sports chief from 2003 to 2007 and is also on trial, told the court last week that Urdangarin got royal treatment from Jaume Matas, the then-regional head of the Balearic Islands government. Ballester said Matas ordered him to approve all of Urdangarin's government contracts,

Matas, a former Popular Party (PP) minister, is on trial in a wider corruption case involving the mismanagement of public money. Hearings into the Urdangarin case began last weekend at the court in Palma and will end on Saturday with the appearance of the Duke of Palma, who received the title when he married the Infanta Cristina in 1997.

In recent months, most of the 500 or so ETA prisoners have asked for special benefits or to be relocated to jails in the Basque Country and Navarre to be nearer to their families. But the Penitentiary Institutions had turned down all the requests because they did not meet the pertinent requirements. madrid The General Judiciary Council expelled Judge Baltasar Garzon on Monday after he was suspended by the Supreme Court last week for ordering illegal phone taps in the Gürtel corruption case, which effectively ends the 57-year-old magistrate's career as both lawyer and judge.

Guardia Civil to escort treasure back home Members of the Guardia Civil's Heritage Brigade will be on board a Spanish Navy Hercules plane on Friday when it takes off from Tampa, Florida, to bring the so-called Odyssey treasure home to Spain. Odyssey Marine Exploration has been using every trick in the legal book for the past five years in order to keep the 594,000 silver and gold coins and other artefacts found on board the Spanish ship Nuestra Señora de las

Mercedes, which was sunk off the southern Portuguese coast by a British warship in 1804. The company argued that the ship was on a private mission bringing Spanish merchants and their goods to Spain but US judges accepted Spain's argument that it was a military ship and therefore exempt from the finders-keepers law. The Hercules carrying the treasure will make several stopovers during its 13hour flight that will end at the Torrejon military base just outside Madrid.

Pay curbs for public-sector managers The Cabinet has approved a decree that puts a ceiling on the salaries of the directors of approximately 4,000 state-owned companies that translates into pay cuts of between 25 and 35 per cent. managers of large public companies now cannot earn more than €105,000 a year in wages and bonuses. For medium-sized companies the cap is €80,000 and €55,000 for smaller ones. Limits have also been placed on fringe benefits such as housing.

They said synthetic meat could reduce the environmental footprint of meat by up to 60%, and would be more efficient than rearing animals. Eurozone ministers back Greece bailout Eurozone finance ministers agreed a second bailout for Greece after marathon talks in Brussels. Greece will receive loans worth more than €130 billion in return for an undertaking to reduce its debts to 120.5% of its GDP by 2020. The deal also provides for the presence of EU monitors of Greece's economic management as some members doubt Greece's commitment to its spending pledges. The euro immediately rose on reports of the deal, which was announced early on Tuesday, after 13 hours of

talks. The head of the IMF, Christine Lagarde, who also took part in the negotiations, said the deal "should give enough space for Greece to restore its competitiveness". Speaking after the deal was reached, Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos

said he was "very happy" with the outcome. Greece needs the funds to avoid bankruptcy on 20th March, when maturing loans must be repaid. After five straight years of recession, Greece's debt currently amounts to more than 160% of its Gross Domestic Product.

Kenyan men to boycott meals The Maendeleo Ya Wanaume men's lobby group has called for a sixday boycott of meals cooked at home by women to try to stop them beating up or emotionally abusing their husbands or partners. It says men should instead eat together outside the home, sharing experiences of emotional and physical abuse. The group claims the

government does not take domestic violence against men seriously and may be fuelling it through its initiatives to improve the status of women. Most meals in Kenyan homes are cooked by women and culturally and most men eat at home to show their appreciation for women. Maendeleo Ya Wanaume – which means Development

Teacher killed in accident Alleged attacker arrested

The teacher killed in the coach crash in the early hours of Sunday morning on the A26 near Reims in the Champagne-Ardennes area of Northern France named as 59-year-old Peter Rippington (pictured below with his wife). His wife, Sharon, and daughter Amy, 24, were also on the coach and injured in the crash. The British driver of the coach, 47-year-old Derek Thompson, was arrested following the accident – normal procedure in France. He is being

Caught on camera A man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Nellie Geraghty, 79, who fought to keep hold of her handbag containing her husband Frank’s ashes last November. (The couple are pictured, right.) investigated for alleged “involuntary homicide”, but has since been released on bail and can return to the UK. The reports so far have confirmed that drink and drugs tests have come back negative but local police suspect that he may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The coach was making its way back to Worcestershire from Italy following a school skiing trip for Alvechurch Middle School when it flipped over

and came to rest at the bottom of an embankment. A total of 29 pupils were involved in the crash. A 13year-old girl, Suzie Warner, was airlifted to Paris for treatment in a coma and has since undergone an operation after which she was described as being in a “stable condition”. Seven people remain in hospital in France. Flowers were left outside the school in remembrance of the much loved teacher.

She was found in an alleyway with serious head injuries and taken to Royal Oldham Hospital but died the following day. The strap of her handbag was still in Mrs Geraghty’s hand when she was found, but the bag itself was missing along with the ashes. Mark Royle, 32, of no fixed abode but previously from the Shaw area of Oldham appeared before

Oldham Magistrates Court yesterday. He had previously been charged with robbing a woman of her handbag in Rochdale on December 9th. He remains on remand ahead of a plea and case management hearing in relation to the December robbery on February 28th. Frank’s ashes remain missing although police are still making enquiries in the hope that someone may have seen them.

Is it the sun or Health minister Out in the cold jostled a phoenix? Rupert Murdoch’s News International plans to start a new newspaper entitled The Sun on Sunday following the demise of their News Of The World Sunday newspaper. Murdoch has clearly recaptured some of the old magic after looking somewhat fragile at the enquiries into phone hacking last year. He was seen smiling and looking fit and well in the UK over the weekend. Sky News reported that: “All journalists at the Times

love Mudoch because he’s a ‘newspaper man’” according to Ruth Gledhill who is their religious correspondent. The Sun on Sunday will be launched this weekend according to an internal memo issued by News International’s chief executive Tom Mockridge saying that the media mogul will be in London for the launch and that “this is our moment”. Perhaps it should have been called the Phoenix, quipped one reporter.

David Cameron met healthcare professionals to discuss proposed health reforms on Monday along with Health secretary Andrew Lansley.

Hautot screamed at him: “Don’t you dare lie to me” after he had told her that there would be no privatisation within the NHS.

Lansley was confronted by a group of around 40 angry protesters against the reforms who said that key health partners had been excluded from the talks as he arrived at Downing Street for the meeting. He was pushed and jostled by the group who tried to prevent him from entering the building.

David Cameron said of the incident: “Reform is never easy, but it is vital to reform our NHS because I want it to be there looking after every family in the country and doing a good job in the future. Choice for patients is a good thing: making sure that GPs, not bureaucrats, are making decisions, that’s a good thing. This is about improving and financing the NHS for the future.”

Eric Pickles says he plans to overturn the law that prohibits prayers to be said prior to council meetings using a little used local law that allows local councils to decide for themselves whether to have prayers or not. He has fast-tracked the implementation of a general power of

competence – contained in last year's Localism Act – enabling councils to do anything an individual can do that is not illegal. In Bideford, Devon, an atheist member of the council took the question to the high court and won a case last week to stop prayers being said.

Questioned Foreign Secretary William Hague says that if Iran continues to pursue new nuclear weapons it could start a new “cold war” and refused to rule out military conflict with them if they carry on. He continued that he would not exclude any decisions though diplomatic measures would strenuously be pursued first. He said that a new nuclear crisis would be a “disaster in world affairs” and that he has concerns that other middle east countries could acquire similar nuclear aspirations. Several western nations have imposed sanctions against Tehran in recent months. The US and EU have expressed hopes that talks can resume with Iran.

Stephen Farrow, 47 years old, was arrested on Sunday in connection with the murders of both Betty Yates in Worcestershire and the Rev. On Monday police were given more time to question the suspect until the early hours of Wednesday without charging him. However, they say there is evidence that links the two murders previously thought to be separate incidents UK

Climbers fined for damaging plants Two climbers have been fined €601.02 for pushing a big rock into a ravine where it damaged several protected plants in the Barranco de la Coladilla in the Sierra Almijara natural park in Nerja on January 4th last year. Manuel Ortega told a local paper that a few days earlier while climbing alone he had come across a huge rock precariously balanced over a path much used by hikers. After

touching it with his foot he realised it was loose and decided that for safety's sake it would be better to push it and let it roll down the rock face to the ravine below. He was climbing in

the spot a few days later with his friend, Manuel Armijo, when they were approached by two agents from the Junta de Andalucia's environment department. They pointed

Vandalism eats into council budgets Councils throughout Malaga province fork out hundreds of thousands of euros every year to repair the damage caused by vandals to façades, rubbish containers and street benches. By law, the vandals are supposed to pay for the repairs but they are difficult to catch, so the local council ends up footing the bill. Malaga City Hall has the biggest bill – €500,000 – followed by Alhaurin de la

Torre (€260,000), and Marbella (€100,000). Most other towns, like Alhaurin el Grande and Velez Malaga pay out around €20,000 a year. Councils on the coast report that vandalism

increases in the summer. Some councils, like Torremolinos, simply lose patience. The skating rink there has been targeted by vandals so often that the council is considering closing it down.

Sex ring busted Acting on a complaint from a Nigerian women, the National Police have arrested 12 people in Malaga province, three in Madrid and two each in Seville and Leon on charges of luring African women with false promises of work. The woman said she came to Spain in 2000 after a neighbour in her home town offered to pay her living expenses while she studied at a Spanish university as a favour for her family. Once here, she was told she had to work as a prostitute for the gang to pay for the expenses of bringing her here and was then beaten until she agreed.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

The union party’s over

Paying to keep a treasure

W

T

hen the Cabinet approved the labour reforms on February 10th the unions immediately went into overdrive, calling for nationwide protests on Sunday the 19th. Those who oppose the reforms are concentrating on one aspect – they make it cheaper to fire staff, reducing severance pay from 45 days per year worked to 33. The unions are understandably angry because they put a lot of work into getting such good severance pay for the workers, but I suspect other aspects of the reforms make them madder still.

D

eputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría hit the nail on the head when she said after last Friday’s cabinet meeting that she understood “unions are protesting because of the reforms reduce their presence or power within the area of labour relations”. She was referring to the reform that allows companies employing less than 50 people to reach agreements with their workers without union interference. This means that when a company is in economic dire straits – as so many of them are – the bosses can sit down with the workers and work out ways and means of avoiding closing down. This could include a temporary reduction in wages or working shorter hours – which is hard on the workers but at least they’ll be able to hang on to their jobs until things get better.

S

o far, I haven’t read anyone in the press or heard anybody on the telly giving details of all the other aspects that make up the reform package. In fact, most of the pundits on the political chat shows seem to belong to the Socialist Party. Even where there is an attempt to be impartial – on Los Desayunos on TVE1 and La Noche en 24 Horas, TVE’s 24-hour news station, which are the two most serious political programmes on Spanish TV – the Socialists end up shouting down the non-Socialists.

H

owever, Sáenz de Santamaría and the PP’s general secretary, Maria Dolores del Cospedal, have been acting as efficient counter-balances. The latter chided the unions for suddenly finding their voice after seven silent years – and therein lies the rub.

T

he unions woke up on November 21st to find themselves in opposition. The PP’s landslide victory the day before had abruptly put an end to the years of bounty they had enjoyed under the Zapatero government, which bought the compliance of the two main unions with subsidies amounting to more than €2 million each a year.

T

he unions’ financial situation has been one of the best kept secrets in this country but now we’re beginning to find out where they’ve been getting their money from. For example, the general public was largely unaware of the fact that union representatives who must sit by law on the boards of banks and cajas are paid anything up to €25,000 for attending a single meeting. Yet most manual workers – the people they’re supposed to represent – earn considerably less than €1,000, and few professionals earn much more – with the average take-home pay being around €1,200.

T

hen last week we found out that the head of the Madrid section of the UGT union, José Ricardo Martínez, received €180,000 a year as a director of Bankia which, he claimed, went straight to the UGT’s coffers. Deputy PM Sáenz de Santamaría immediately called on union leaders to make public what they earn, saying the government “has taken transparency on board, and the unions that receive public subsidies should decide if the moment has come for them to do so as well”.

T

he government has already cut back those subsidies by 20 per cent but it would be interesting to find out exactly what those subsidies are for. I remember the Zapatero government giving out subsidies to help unemployed people train for new careers – one of them being for captains of yachts!

A

nother aspect of the labour movement that rarely sees the light of day concerns the “liberados sindicales” – union representatives who can take time off by law when they have to attend to union matters. According to a report in La Razon newspaper, there are around 10,000 such representatives who cost their employers – the government among them – some €500 million a year. However, the paper admitted that the figures are based on its own investigations – the unions have always refused to release detailed information about these people. What we do know is that they often take advantage of their position and just turn up for their pay cheques, although the law says they can only take 15 to 20 hours off per month.

N

o wonder the unions are on the warpath – under the new government they're going to have a harder time keeping their secrets.

he long battle for the Odyssey treasure finally appears to be over. Spain this week is set to bring back the estimated 594,000 silver and gold coins and other artefacts from the 19th century sunken shipwreck that Odyssey Marine Exploration brought to the surface in 2007 and which have been at the centre of a legal fight in the United States. On Friday, a federal magistrate in Tampa, Florida, where the treasure hunter is located, gave the final order for Odyssey to turn over the estimated $500,000 trove to Spanish officials. The ruling came after the US Supreme Court denied Odyssey’s last chance to stop Spain from bringing home what is considered perhaps the biggest find ever to be recovered from the bottom of the ocean.

B

ut besides all the legal moves, Odyssey officials had been keenly working behind the scenes in an effort to try to win their battle. Lawyers for the firm had asked Spain to fulfill a host of requisites before allowing them to take the coins. Among them: requiring Spain to pay some $400,000 in storage and conservation fees for the artefacts to cover the costs incurred over the past five years; telling Spanish officials that it is their own responsibility to haul the coins and the rest of the artefacts to military aircraft expected to arrive in Tampa that will airlift the trove; and forewarning the government that it cannot have access to a portion of the treasure that is being stored in Gibraltar, outside US federal court jurisdiction. That was only the end of Odyssey’s last minute attempts to keep the small fortune it discovered.

O

ver the past few years, Odyssey executives have been giving amounts of generous contributions to US lawmakers – all from the Republican Party – that now shed light on what may have been a devious attempt to get Congress in Washington to change the law in its favour. Last year, a small but suspicious provision in the defence spending bill was included by several Republicans from Florida that, if had been passed, may have given Odyssey an easy argument for the courts in the United States to rule in its favour. A small change was included in the socalled 2004 Sunken Military Craft Act that would have allowed US law to open a door for private salvage firms like Odyssey to pluck anything from shipwreck vessels that carried private goods. The provision was rejected in early December.

T

he US courts have sided with Spain in its argument that the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, sunk in 1804 by the British navy off the coast of Cádiz, is protected by federal sovereign immunity laws. Odyssey had argued that Las Mercedes was a private mail frigate that was ferrying passengers and personal goods, including the coins that belonged to private citizens, from South America to Spain when it was sunk. But disagreeing historians say the ship was employed by the Spanish crown at the time when tensions between France, Spain and Britain were coming to a head.

O

dyssey had hired a notable Washington lobbying firm Jenkins Hill to try to convince lawmakers to change the law. At the same time, the treasure hunter’s top executives gave thousands of dollars in political contributions to the amendment’s supporters, including Senator Marco Rubio and Representative Vern Buchanan, both of Florida, according to Federal Elections Commission records. The Odyssey board members also helped finance Mike Prendergast’s unsuccessful 2010 bid for a House of Representatives seat. The controversial Republican and former Iraq and Afghanistan veteran, who called his female incumbent Democratic opponent “a bitch” on his Facebook page during the campaign, is now head of the Florida state’s office of veteran affairs. It is not clear what Prendergast had promised Odyssey executives, including its lawyer, for them to give so much money to his campaign.

I

n the end, Spain will get an historic discovery for its museums at the expense of a group of greedy guys who enjoy going treasure hunting on the weekends. And US law has rightfully established that not all hidden troves discovered fall under the finders-keepers doctrine.

Special Feature

the

What do you think is the most frightening thing someone can tell you? You don’t have enough money in your bank account to pay the phone or electricity bill? Yep, not nice. Or, you can’t pay your mortgage and are going to lose your house or your business? Wow, that’s scarey! While both of these things are pretty stressful, probably the most frightening thing a person can ever be told is “I’m sorry, we’ve done all we can and there’s nothing more we can do for you”. Now that is positively terrifying. At this point you and those you love will realise that you have a terminal illness and there’s nothing the doctors or anybody else can do to help apart from perhaps giving you some idea as to how long you have left. Maybe you’ve gone through months or even years of treatment for your cancer or illness. Maybe it was just too late by the time it was discovered to do anything about. When this happened to Joan Hunt’s husband some years ago, not only was it the most awful news they could have received, there was also no such thing as a hospice or cancer society to help them through it. We on the Costa del Sol are now incredibly fortunate because Joan didn’t just give in, she had a vision of helping other people get through the ordeal of losing someone close to you. She basically got off her bum and her dedication resulted with Cudeca being registered as an association in 1992. Through lots of hard work, Cudeca was eventually “upgraded” to a foundation here in Spain in 1999. To be registered as a foundation means that everything has to be thoroughly checked by officials to make sure everything is above board before you are granted this status – all the accounts, premises, employees, etc. With foundation status the banks and financial institutions will look favourably on Cudeca. To this end the Board of Trustees is formed of highly recognised professionals, who, at no cost to Cudeca, ensure that the aims of the Foundation are complied with. The indomitable Mrs. Hunt – now in her 80s – persuades and cajoles anybody and everybody she and her team can think of to donate money to keeping Cudeca alive. Their aim to give a “special kind of caring” is enhanced by their other motto “Giving life to

days”. Ask any of their patients and families and they would tell you that they wouldn’t know how to cope without Cudeca’s help. With terminal care, they can’t give you more days to live, but they can make those that you have as comfortable and special as they can possibly be. The basic aims of Cudeca are to care, relieve, accompany and offer the specialist care that is involved in treating patients resident in the province of Málaga, who are suffering from advanced or terminal cancer – which includes giving support and comfort to their family. Now, pretty much every week we run little editorial pieces about what functions have been put on and how much has been donated to Cudeca but we rarely get into how the money has been spent and, recently with “el crisis” people have been wondering where all the money is going. So I’ll tell you! It costs around €2.1 million every year to run the hospice and its services. Since it started Cudeca has made a year-on-year loss and in 2010 almost had to close the doors of the inpatient unit due to lack of enough support to keep going – the accounts for year end 2009 showed a whopping €415,000 loss! On March 30th 2010, actor Antonio Banderas, Patron of the Fundación Lágrimas y Favores, during the inauguration ceremony, undertook to help Cudeca on a permanent basis, supporting their campaign to raise funds and specifically gain members. His wife, actress Melanie Griffiths also pledged her support. Public support of this calibre undoubtedly impacts on all areas of longterm fundraising for the organisation. In 2010 the year-on-year loss had decreased to €278,000 – still far too high but going in the right direction. This was followed by four announcements of bequests including properties which, once the sale and legal aspects were taken care of, would increase income very substantially in 2011. In July2010, the sponsorship of a room in the In-Patients’ Unit was confirmed; this was the biggest individual

donation ever received by Cudeca. All of these successes had a financial impact which made it possible on 15th November 2010 for the Trust to approve an Action Plan which kept all of the care services going, at least during 2011.Cudeca have a policy of total transparency as far as their funds go and, as a foundation they are legally obliged to do so. There are 12 shops from Estepona to Nerja which bring in about a third of Cudeca’s money. In these shops, more than 450 volunteers give their time freely, working anything from full-time while the shops are open to one or two hours a week. The volunteers are exactly that – they do not get paid for the time they devote to Cudeca but, obviously without this army of helpers Cudeca shops could not function. They are each worth their weight in gold! And talking of volunteers there is another army of equally treasured volunteers who ferry patients from their homes to and from hospitals all over the region. The hospice stands on land that was donated to Cudeca by the Ayuntamient of Benalmadena. The building itself has 15 beds and takes a maximum of nine in-patients at a time. Why the disparity in numbers? Well, because if your loved one had a terminal illness that needed 24 hour care within a hospice environment, you’d want to be there too, wouldn’t you? I certainly would, and having the comfortable furnished rooms with two beds in allows this to happen. The rooms have patio style doors that have their own little patio with furniture for those that can get outside and overlook well kept gardens (pictured above right). For those who are less mobile but still want to get outside, the doors are big enough so the beds can be wheeled outside into the fresh air if the patient wants. Ideal! They also have a children’s play room with brightly coloured decorations and toys for children visiting relatives or friends of relatives. Cudeca has evolved over the years to form a complete and

comprehensive organisation offering all aspects of palliative care, given without cost to patients suffering from a non-curable illness. The majority of Cudeca’s personnel are Spanish and all are bi-lingual Spanish/English. This availability of a minimum of two languages is a great comfort to their patients who go to them from a multinational community. Just think how it is when you can’t speak properly to your doctor in English if you go to see him when you’re feeling rotten – now times that by about a million when you can’t get him to understand a problem when you have a terminal illness. See what I mean? But that’s not all that the hospice does. Their Day Care Centre has between 12 and 15 patients brought to them either by their relatives or by the aforementioned volunteers. Here they can sit in a sunny room with stunning views talking with people who are in the same situation which leads to many fears being alleviated. Now imagine how frightening it can be to have something else go wrong with you. Is it normal? Has someone else had the same experience? How did they tell someone close to them their situation? The help the Day Centre people give to each other is immeasurable. Top that with yet another host of voluteers, all highly trained, that give the patients manicures, pedicures, massage, hairdressing reflexology, (whether it’s for your own hair or your new wig), and assisted bathing for those who can no longer do it themselves. The Day Care Centre provides another vital role to the patients and their families. And did I mention the kitchens? Of course, with different illnesses, different diets have to be coped with and the cheerful kitchen staff carry out their duties wonderfully every day. Cudeca also run counselling sessions for patients and their families. The situation they find themselves in is one of the most stressful possible and to be able to talk out your worries and fears, plus the anger that a lot of people feel, is an absolute essential

and all Cudeca’s staff are highly trained with regular training and guidance courses. Last week Cudeca received their 7,000th (yes seven thousand!) patient and almost 20% of these patients are of non-Spanish nationality. Many of the Spanish patients are referred to Cudeca from the hospitals as are, increasingly, the number of foreign patients including the British. Cudeca have approximately 160 homecare patients at any one time looked after by four Cudeca Home Care teams. These patients add up to approximately 700 every year. Many people will choose to stay in their own homes surrounded by their families and friends. But they’re not trained doctors or nurses in the main so they need help and this is where the Cudeca Home Care Teams come in. So – now to money. To run an organisation the size of Cudeca even with all their volunteers costs a fortune. You simply cannot get doctors, nurses and all manner of essential staff of the calibre needed and with the understanding of their patients needs for peanuts. Cudeca needs to raise, as I mentioned before, over two million euros a year to keep going with their in-patient, daycare and palliative home care services that are a vital part of our community on the Costa del Sol. You might think that’s a lot of money, and it is but, think how much you would need these people if you or someone you love is faced with this situation. The care they give is without cost to the patients and their families so no-one is turned away because they can’t pay for the expensive care and

drugs to ease their pain and symptoms away. Cudeca needs your money – you might very well one day need Cudeca so, if we all put in just a bit, or whatever you can, Cudeca stands a chance of keeping going. In Malaga Province alone there were nearly 275,000 foreign residents registered in 2011, almost 57,000 are working and affiliated to the Social Security system. These are the registered people, there must be many thousands more who are not registered. If you count just the people that are registered and they in turn gave just €10 each per year (and that’s just us foreigners!) – that would add up to €2,750,000 – enough to keep them going and pay off a bit of the old debts. I know times are hard financially, they are for everybody but not half as bad as for those who have a terminal illness and their families who need .Cudeca’s help so, come on, we all know where the Cudeca shops are, raid your pockets, piggy bank, under the floor safe, biscuit tin in the garage or anywhere you have money stashed and take it along to one of the shops, to the hospice itself at the top of Benalmadena, or to any of their events and make a difference to the people in your own community. If a woman of over 80-years-old can give of her time and energy, there’s no excuse for the rest of us not doing our bit so now is the time to give a tenner or more if you can afford it! You can read more about the hospice, what they do and even look at their financial figures at www.cudeca.org by Kim Wykham

Community News e News Help Desk Something new on the beach

We at The News have been asked all manner of questions for many years and it seemed to us that there was a need for a central service where you can go as a first point of call if something is worrying you. Duncan Burrell has lived in Spain for 30 years and has experience of dealing with most things. He has bought and sold houses, owned businesses, brought up two children with all that entails here with schools, medical problems etc., etc. and between us we have over 45 years of experience dealing with all manner of problems.

The News Help Desk will be open on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday every week from 1pm until 3pm in The News offices at Sierra Chica, opposite the La Trocha Commercial Centre, Coin and on Sundays at La Trocha Market (near the entrance to the escalators) from 10am until mid-day. Both places are on the A355 which is the road that runs between Coin and Cartama. If you live on the coast and can’t make it up here, give us a call and we can make an appointment to see you. We will also be at the Manila Bar on the Paseo Maritimo, Fuengirola from 11am until 1pm this Friday, 24th February so you can pop along and see us. Don’t go to someone who’s going to charge you a fortune for something that can so easily be fixed - The News Help Desk may well be able to sort it out for you at a far lesser cost. Starting this Friday February 24thThe News will be offering a service where you can come for advice on how to deal with any problems you may have in connection with living in Spain, including legalising of houses, businesses, cars, and if there’s something we can’t help you with, we will know someone who can, and do it legally too! If you can’t come and see us personally, call Duncan Burrell on 607 590 977 or call us here at The News on 952 454 491 and let us help you to be able to see a light at the end of that very dark tunnel at last!

DAVID THE DOGMAN: Buying a dog

Isis was born in January 2010 and lived as a family pet. Her "family" went back to the UK and abandoned her on their finca to fend for herself. Luckily for her a kindly Spanish lady fed her until she was rescued by SOS who hope to find her a new home with caring owners.

She is slim and pretty, about Labrador size, responds well to commands, loves people and other dogs and enjoys playing games. She would dearly love to be a family pet again. Call SOS on 665 682 919 or 605 227 155 for more information.

Administration of Tablets – part 2 Place one hand across the muzzle and insert a forefinger and the thumb gently into the space behind the canine teeth (fangs) then gently press the thumb or forefinger on to the roof of the dog’s mouth. Provided you have sufficient strength and dexterity in your wrist to be able to cope with the dog’s head movement, this strategy usually effectively prevents the shutting of the jaws on your fingers providing you maintain pressure on the roof of the mouth. It is most important that the gentle pressure on the hard palate is not reduced otherwise the

mouth will clamp shut. With the tablet in the other hand it can then be pushed as far down the throat as possible and if the jaws are then quickly closed and the throat stroked the tablet is usually swallowed. I understand there are certain pill pushers. Can these be used? There are certain devices on the market to help getting tablets into dogs. Some of these are reasonably effective but none are, in my experience, 100%. However, the idea may be worth trying. Can I disguise the tablets with anything? Yes, many people find that wrapping the tablet in

butter, coating it in some favourite food or tidbit – as already described in last week’s article – will often do the trick. It should be remembered that there are certain tablets that you may have been directed to give on an empty stomach and care must be exercised then in the amount of food or tidbits allocated. But one or two dog treats in order to get the medication into the dog is preferable to no medication at all! Can I crush the tablets and mix them in food? It may be possible but some tablets are specially coated because the actual drug is unpleasant tasting. In these cases you will achieve

nothing by mixing it into food! I get the tablet into the throat and follow all the instructions but frequently find it on the floor some time later. Even the most experienced of us have had this. If you are not sure that the tablet has been swallowed dripping a little water into the mouth with the aid of a syringe usually ensures that it is swallowed. Alternatively try gently pinching the nose and then stroking the throat.

e Brits Abroad New Musical Director Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a British Consulate and the pickle some Brits find themselves in? Next month, British TV Channel 4 will broadcast a series of three documentaries that explore those issues. The series “Our Man In…”, covers the work of the British consular staff here in Spain and will be shown on Thursday 1st, 8th and 15th of March at 11.00 pm (Spanish time). programme The first features Mallorca and Ibiza, the second follows the team in Alicante and the third covers Tenerife and Barcelona. There was a full house at Villa Luisa as members and guests of the British Society joined in the Valentine Celebration Evening. Valentine cocktails were on sale in the cosy bar to begin the evening. The pink theme was evident with various shades of pink being worn and tables in the function room decorated with pink serviettes and in gifts for the ladies. The President John Simpson welcomed everyone, introduced the guests and thanked all the members who had helped to decorate the room and to prepare the tables. The menu set the scene for a romantic evening featuring such delights as Lamb for Lovers, Raunchy Pork Ribs, Chicken and Bacon Roulade Kisses and Hot and Sexy Thai Beef.

Memories were stirred with the offering of Your Last Rolo Cheesecake, while other choices included Strawberry and Cream Shortbread Hearts and St Valentine’s Kiwi Pavlova. Entertainer Jason Oliver provided some background music during the meal but soon moved on to a few slow numbers to draw the dancers on to the dance floor. As the pace quickened more people joined the dancers and kept up the lively pace until the early hours. For further information about joining the British Society or to read about forthcoming events please consult our website www.britishsocietyspain. com, e-mail britsoc@hotmail.com or telephone John Simpson on 952575422.

St.Valentine’s Day is always one to remember and is a picture of red and white with many of Santa Maria Bowls Club bowlers in fancy dress. This year was no exception and the “barmy” weather conditions made it a pleasurable day for everyone. The tournament was broken down into three games of eight ends – a normal game, long and short mat, concluding with a 3-2-1. “Spot prizes” were awarded throughout the day and a splendid American buffet lunch was enjoyed by the 38 members who played. After the opening two games only Gordon & Margaret Kain and Ron & Sheila Booton had taken maximum points with Chic Young & Pamela Hatton close on their heels in the event of any “slip-up” by the leaders in the last game. All three pairings won their last game which meant the placings were decided on “ends won” – the first place going to Gordon & Margaret who won 15 ends as opposed to Ron & Sheila’s 14 with Chic & Pamela finishing in third place.

e News Help Desk - Cycling’s Tour of Andalucia who and what is it for? rides into Benalmadena The race, better known as Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista del Sol, started on Sunday with a 6Km prologue time trial. The stage was won by Patrick Gretsch team (Project 1t4i) in a time of 6'49", second place went to Markel Irizar team (Radioshack-Nissan) at +0'02"secs, third place Jerome Coppel team (SaurSojasun) at +0'03"secs, fourth Michael Matthews at team (Rabobank) +0'06"secs, and in fifth place just 8 seconds adrift Gaetan Bille team (Lotto-Belisol).

Well, maybe you’ve just arrived in Spain and don’t know the systems or what you need to get done to make yourself legal here or, maybe, you’ve been here for years but have found the routes through all the bureaucracy impossible to work through so you ignore what you really do need to do and hope there’ll be no consequences. Sound familiar? We’ve all received letters from the electric and telephone companies that we don’t understand. Then there are the ones from the council or the tax or IVA people. They’re, of course, in Spanish but they look like you’re in trouble about something and you have absolutely no idea what it is so. So what do you do? We all react in one of three ways: 1. We know someone who speaks enough Spanish to try and translate it for us. Now you know what it says but do you know what you have to do about it? 2. We take it to a lawyer that will cost us a fortune to find out what it’s about. 3. We put it in a drawer and hope it will go away! The problem with two of the above is that you are still stressed out about it all and, no, it isn’t going to go away and now, maybe, you really are in trouble! It’s simply the same as in the UK. If you know the systems and speak the language there’s rarely a problem if things are dealt with properly. For instance, if you got a letter from BT, you’d phone them and sort it. Here, it’s in Spanish, they don’t speak English apart from if you hang on for around half an hour waiting for the person they say speaks English and then – guess what? – they don’t understand what you’re on about. We all know it’s a pain but we have chosen to live here and this is what we have to put up with if we’re not fluent in the language. On the other hand, even if you’ve done all the language courses available and are pretty fluent, do you know who to go and speak to and which hoops you have to jump through or work round to get to the right people who can sort it all out. Now, that’s where we come in. We have over 45 years experience in dealing with everything from Telefonica to Sevillana Endesa to the water people, from importing cars from abroad and re-registering them to checking that there’s no charges outstanding against them before you even buy them. We can help you with translations to do with hospitals, town halls, police etc., and we can even help you with getting your kids into school. Want to make sure your house is legal and if not, make it so? Come to us. Want to purchase a property and make sure there are no outstanding bills on it? Come to us. We can help you with practically anything you can think of and, if we can’t, we can refer you to a trustworthy expert in whatever field you need that can. So, when it looks like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, come to us and we’ll turn the torch on for you! Call The News Help Desk: Duncan Burrell 607 590 977 or 952 454 491 for The News Help Desk Office. Or pop in and see us at The News, 1st Floor, Local 6, Sierra Chica, Coin. We’re opposite the La Trocha Commercial Centre on the Coin to Cartama Road (A355 km1) and Duncan will be at his desk Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 1-3pm or you can see him at the La Trocha Commercial Centre Sunday Market from 10am until mid-day.

Stage two saw the riders head off from Zahara de los Atunes with a ride of some 197.9 Km to Benalmadena with just a couple of category 3 climbs of just over 300 metres each one at 46 Km and the other soon after at the 49 Km point, the stage was relatively flat. At the finish in a packed Benalmadena with fans cheering home local riders Javier Ramirez team (Andalucia), who just managed to hold off local Luis Angel Maté team (Cofidis, le crédit en ligne )in the sprint finish in a time of 5h02'10". parties, be they birthdays, anniversaries, office parties or just a good excuse to get together, eat, drink and have fun. Outside, the terrace can seat another 80 with shade in the summer with comfortable chairs and a pretty vine decoration. hey are very fussy about the food they serve and everything has to be fresh and in season. Tine has searched high and low for the best quality suppliers and you will not find any bottled vegetables in this restaurant – everything is of the best quality. ou can eat as much as you like for just €8.95 per person and there is a huge range of dishes. or my starter, I had fresh prawns that still tasted of the sea they were so fresh, a breaded fillet of fish, calamari a la Romana plus some beautifully crisp coleslaw and fresh bread. My husband started with the prawns, thinly sliced Jamon Serrano – just as it should be, rare cold roast beef and some Russian salad, or our next course, I had to have some of the beef as I had been told how good it was (and he was right, it really was good), a spicy pork dish that was delicious, asparagus spears, rice and I even had some chips! My husband had curried chicken that was good and not too spicy hot, he also

tried some of the spicy pork, paella, and a fillet of fish – quite a mix but that’s the beauty of Don Q, if you want to mix and match you can do just that. or the third course I tried some roast pork from their carvery area with roasted leek, pineapple and mandarin pieces. Yes, I know it sounds odd but try it, fruit with pork or chicken gives the dish a whole new lift and dimension. Of course, you could always have it with chips, roast or jacketed potatoes, all of which are there for you if you prefer. My husband also had the roast pork but he had it with fresh Mediterranean roast herbed vegetables, roast potatoes and a medley of steamed fresh vegetables. early full by this time, I then had a delightfully smooth chocolate mousse and my husband had the home made “flan”. lso available are meatballs, pasta, home-made cakes, chilli con carne, soups, lots more salads and fresh fruit. he choices will be changed every week, some new ones will be added and some taken away according to season so, just because you’ve been once doesn’t mean you’ll be bored next time you go. Whatever Tine has found that’s fresh could well be added to the repertoire of dishes available.

rinks are all at very reasonable prices with everything from a nice glass or bottle of red, white or rosé wine, beers and soft drinks, or a litre of beer, tinto verano, sangria or soft drinks for yourself or to share. Fancy a cocktail or spirit? You can have those too! ast but not least, enjoy a nicely presented coffee as you like it or a liqueur coffee. ll in all, Don Q with its new management and team is definitely worth visiting for lunch or dinner. The quality of the food is excellent and the prices are very competitive – definitely good value for money. ew management and staff have made all the difference to this delightful restaurant. on Q, Paseo Maritimo, 40, Fuengirola is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year from 1pm until 10pm.

La Trocha, Coin The long awaited digital projector has finally arrived in “Sala 1” at the La Trocha cinema in Coin. Problems with the sound matching the film or not being able to find the sound in English for the film showing are legendary locally but now, they should be a thing of the past. For those of you who are used to all the English films being shown in “Sala 5”, don’t go and sit in the wrong screening room! So, for the first film with the new projector we have the recent adaptation from the famous John Le Carré book “Tinker Tailor, Soldier, Spy”. Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Mark Strong and BBC’s new Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch to name but a few. The question at the heart of the film is simplicity itself: Is there a Soviet secret agent at the

very highest echelons of British intelligence? Getting to the answer, however, couldn't be more deliciously, thrillingly, brilliantly complex. Starring a surprising Gary Oldman and masterfully directed by Tomas Alfredson, "Tinker Tailor" comes by that complexity honestly, courtesy of the subtle, allusive 1974 John le Carré novel set in a merciless espionage world where trust is an illusion and nothing is remotely what it seems. This is a film to which very close attention must be paid, but the rewards of doing so are considerable. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is showing at the La Trocha cinema, in the La Trocha Commercial Centre on the Coin to Cartama Road (A355) tomorrow, Thursday 23rd and on

MOVIE SPOTLIGHT

Going to be a Ghost Cinema

By Amy Thomas

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Safe House

here are many movies Tnormally that I tend to avoid, big budget ones packed with big names, and “Ghost Rider” was one of them. Back in 2007 this movie received mixed reviews, those who loved the comic didn’t care about Cage’s poor acting, they just loved anything to do with Ghost Rider. Some found the whole thing rather disappointing, so I’m going to be fair, and give it a balanced view.

By Daniel Espinosa, Starring: Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds In this lively action thriller Tobin Frost (Washington) is a renegade CIA agent, on the run for 10 years and now coming back on the grid. Frost is being chased by gunmen and seeks refuge at the American consulate in Cape Town, South Africa. The rogue agent must be debriefed and an interrogation team take him to a safe house run by the green, and bored rookie

agent Matt Weston (Reynolds). But it all goes horribly wrong when the safe house proves to be anything but, the interrogation team is killed and Weston and Frost go on the run together. Now the veteran spy and the rookie have to keep one step ahead of the bad guys and try to find out who wants Frost dead. Along the way there are plenty of

exciting set pieces, some brutal moments involving fist fights and waterboarding, and double crosses aplenty. The storyline doesn’t break new boundaries, but for lovers of conspiracy spy thrillers who are still missing Jason Bourne, Safe House is fast paced and entertaining. Washington is as cool as a block of ice and there are solid acting performances from all the cast.

ased on the Marvel character, B comic Nicholas Cage plays Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stunt driver who escapes death countless times because he sold his soul to the Devil (Peter Fonda) years earlier in exchange that his father would beat cancer. The Devil doesn't totally keep his end of the bargain so Johnny escapes to fame but soon the Devil shows up wanting him to become the Ghost Rider and destroy his son who is trying to take over his power.

Essentially Need Leonard Leonard Cohen is one of the greatest artists of the last half century, but his albums are often uneven, meaning that he is better served by compilations than many musicians. If you are new to Leonard Cohen, then this is the best primer you can begin with. While it is not necessarily his best collection of works and does not necessarily compare with his albums taken by itself, you will find the songs that have influenced singers from the 70s to today. The first of the two CDs starts with Leonard Cohen singing so well on "Suzanne;" this ballad places Leonard squarely front and centre and that's quite all right by me! I think Leonard's voice is quite good; it has a certain vulnerability to it that simply

must endear him to many people. We also get a fine ballad in "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye;" the song also has a very well done guitar arrangement and Leonard Cohen never misses a beat! He handles complicated tempo and key changes very well and this impresses me. "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye" is a big highlight of the first CD. "Chelsea Hotel #2" is a very sensitive melody that moves me a lot; and I really like "Who By Fire" which sports a more lush musical arrangement to accompany Leonard's singing. "Who By Fire" is very nicely done and memorable at that! Listen also for "If It Be Your Will" Leonard expands his vocal range a bit to sing this tune with what sounds like a lot of minor keys and chords that

are intended to touch people's innermost souls. "I'm Your Man" has an excellent beat; and the first CD closes well with Leonard Cohen performing "Tower of Song." "Tower of Song" has quite an interesting arrangement and it fits in well with Leonard's vocalizing. I think you'll like "Tower of Song." The second CD opens up with Leonard performing "Ain't No Cure For Love;" "Ain't No Cure For Love" has some pretty good harmonizing on backup to bolster Leonard Cohen's singing. "First We Take Manhattan" has a sound that reminds me of a type of `80s beat; and Leonard never sings a superfluous note. The sound effects of the electric

alarm bells started ringing for me, when I heard the names Cage and Fonda. Cage is hit and miss, most of the time, but Fonda, what has he ever done that was good? ow if you thought N things couldn’t get any worse, believe me, they do. The sequel is due to premier this week, and from what I’ve read, people who liked the first part hate this new one and the ones who hated the first one, hate this one too! Oh, it’s not looking good! And here is why, never make a sequel with a different director, if the director won’t part-take in a “part 2”, he must know it’s going to be bad – that is why he’s jumped ship. haven’t seen this “sequel”, Ithebut from what I’ve seen on trailers, it looks dreadful. Christopher Lambert is in it, Lambert has only ever been in one decent film and even that is debatable. What “The Highlander” really good? Hmmm, it was ok for the ‘80s.

he plot doesn’t really Tthrough eviews of the sequel are make much sense and all the film there are Rquite fierce. From what I giant holes. Most of the can gather, it appears that

musical instruments work very well for "First We Take Manhattan" and Leonard's excellent diction bolsters his singing even further. "Democracy" is another `80s sounding tune that is both catchy and memorable; I like the percussion on" Democracy" as Leonard does this one up right. There's also "Waiting For The Miracle;" and one number I always enjoy is "Closing Time." Great! By Abigail Tyler

characters aren’t developed and some of them aren’t even part of the story, not to mention the dialogue which is laughable and corny. The budget was over $100

Cage has given up, his acting is practically nonexistent. I read somewhere and I quote “I've seen better acting out of most middle school and high school productions”. t makes you wonder why Isequel, they decided to make a if no one can be bothered to put any effort into it. The budget was $25 million short of the first one, but apparently the effects are worse. Plenty of movie goers are disappointed in this movie and are asking why Hollywood wasted the money in making a clearly terrible movie.

million, yet it feels cheap and lazy, but some people did in fact like this film. Personally,

This week choose your battles with care - there could be some are just not meant to be fought. New relationships that expand your vision as well as your perspective with teacher types or possibly people from other lands and cultures can have a way of totally altering and loosening a rigid inner process. Right now you are being reminded that it isn't exactly what it is that you do, but what matters most is how well you do it and the passion you put into your craft.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Beetroot is both now in season and the ‘in thing’. The beetroot in this trendy chocolate cake helps keep it fudgy and moist. This one has a cream cheese filling and a chocolate ganache to boot! This recipe sent to us by Ian Wooldridge, Head Chef at Kimbridge Farm, near Romsey.

This is a great time for a creation of any kind and by the weekend the energy becomes much more sensual and passionate in nature. You are getting everything in order, although it could feel that life is moving at a pace of two steps forward and one step back, innovation will be the key to make sure that certain things take hold. Lean into the moment not with your mind but with your keenly developed intuition and the way will be strikingly clear. At the end of the day when you are looking to catch a break or a way through, it all becomes about who you know not what you know. Who you know could help make something happen in a snap. What you know may get you there eventually but it could take years and in some cases lifetimes. This week you are reminded of the power of connection and your ability to communicate what you need with the one person who has the power to help you get what you want. You could be seeing a change in attitude in others towards you, they can sense that you are on a new path and that somehow you're different. They know better than to under-estimate you anymore. You have the creative magic working for you and all the charm and grace a person could ever hope to have. Do not put things off, prioritize your actions and get things done by taking charge of your future in a productive and passionate way. A gesture of love or assistance at just the right time makes your day, often at times like these all it takes is a warm fire after coming in from the cold to create relief or to calm the inner unrest. When the body is comfortable, far more is possible and the emotions can stabilise too. Focus your attention this week on your own home life and follow through on doing the things that you know will enhance your living conditions. The heat is being taken off something giving you time to think before taking a course of action you may otherwise regret. You are likely to attract all sorts of attention right now and all you have to do is just ask and your wish may very well be granted. The focus of the moment is about finding the balance in your relationships and interactions with other. Time is on your side so do not skip any steps. Get any agreements in writing, this will let others know you mean business.

For a while now there has been a long drawn out something that has required much more from your heart, body and soul than you thought you ever had in you. If you answered the call and you did the work, you may be currently benefitting from the discipline required. If you are still steeped in something, there is hope on the horizon. September 23rd - A conversation or meeting could prove to be fruitful whereby you finally feel like progress is near or here. October 22nd

If you feel you are missing something or not clear about how someone feels or where they are coming from, sit and stay but don’t speak, simply listen and you will get clarity. Keep plans open so that you are able to take advantage of opportunities as they may appear, it is good to go with the flow right now. As the week unfolds you will see and hear many things that you've been missing, these little bits of information make all the difference in the world.

SAGITTARIUS A pressing matter will ease where you have previously felt helpless. There is a great

deal of emotion that may be hidden that you are not addressing because you don’t feel you have the energy to deal with it all or you fear the reactions of others. In essence it may feel as if there is far too much beyond your control. The key is not to November 22nd - rush into action until you figure out what is real and what isn't, patience is your friend December 21st this week.

CAPRICORN Letting go is easier said than done, especially for you Capricorn. There is an art in

surrendering to the inevitable; an art in surrendering expectations toward certain outcomes, there is simply an art in surrendering to anything at all. No one enjoys feeling insecure but once you surrender you will feel an uplifting wind beneath your December 22nd - wings giving you a taste of more personal freedom. The past is being rolled up so January 19th there can be no turning back, the rules have finally changed.

PISCES

February 19th March 20th

Clarity has never felt so good. New chapters and new beginnings are here and you too are ready for one to begin. If you are not yet on your way, you are straddling the change and preparing for launch but you won’t mind the wait, because you know what lies ahead and you also know all that you have already survived. Someone is going to be instrumental in helping you break free from a certain hard piece of your past. A new path is loaded with peace and personal happiness.

All it takes at times is knowing that something is coming, that something is inevitable, for you to exercise whatever patience is required, peacefully and expectantly. So if things are not perfect in your world today, if the pain has a way of parking itself in your heart, then know and trust that just about everything in your life could turn around come June. The time of sitting back and waiting for others or certain circumstances to happen is almost over.

20 gr of cocoa powder 250 gr of self-raising flour 1 teaspoon of baking powder 250 gr of caster sugar 100 gr of dark chocolate, broken into small pieces 200 gr of soft margarine 250 gr of cooked (not pickled) beetroot (about 1 large beetroot), chopped 4 large eggs, beaten 200 gr of mascarpone cheese

60 gr of unsalted butter, soft 200 gr of icing sugar, sifted 200ml of double cream 250 gr of dark chocolate, chopped & a little white chocolate, grated to decorate

Directions First grease and line with parchment two 21cm (8”) sponge tins. Into a large mixing bowl, sift the cocoa powder, flour and baking powder. Using another bowl (heat-proof glass or stainless steel) melt the chocolate and butter together over a pan of hot, but not boiling water. Using a food processor, puree the cooked beetroot and then whisk in the beaten eggs. Now add the chocolate/butter mix and the beetroot/egg mix to the mixer bowl with the dry ingredients. Using a mixer, beat the combined mixtures together thoroughly on a slow speed. Then pour the mixture, half & half into each tin. Bake for 3540 minutes at 180˚C (160˚C fan)/Gas Mark 4 until when a knife inserted into the centre

comes out clean. Leave the cakes to stand in the tins for 10 minutes before turning out on a wire rack to cool. To make the filling, beat together the mascarpone, butter and icing sugar. Spread on top of one of the cakes and place the other cake on top so that the filling is in the middle. Finally, make the ganache to go on top. In a pan, bring the cream to just boiling and remove from the heat. Add the chopped chocolate and beat in vigorously until well combined and smooth. Allow to cool slightly, then spread on top of the cake. Leave to set. Decorate with some white chocolate shavings or a decoration of your choice.

FASHION YOU MIGHT WANT TO WEAR

Forget all the frills and frou frou - Burberry’s style goes back to classic … and received rave reviews at the London Fashion Week Burberry's affable Yorkshireman designer Christopher Bailey brought the fashion crowd to Kensington Gardens in London for the launch of the Burberry Prorsum autumn/winter 2012 collection. The finale saw models hoist umbrellas as the roof of the transparent show-tent was spattered with artificial rain from the outside, and confetti rained down inside making the whole show into a winter wonderland complete with snow – pictured left. Outside the show model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley explained how much she enjoyed working for Burberry: "It's like working with family, Christopher is the best person I've ever met in my whole career and I just love working with him."

At the other end of the spectrum, McQ produced a reasonable dress that, if it hadn’t had a mesh dish added to the top (pictured far left), would be absolutely wearable to a party but, add it they did, and it just looked plain daft. If you fancy the actual dress though, take scissors to the dish and get rid of it before you go out. Returning to the scene was Stella McCartney with her first London catwalk show in 16 years. After being hired by the French label Chloé in her early 20s, McCartney has shown her collections on the Paris catwalks. The Stella McCartney label is now a decade old. But in a coup for London Fashion Week, McCartney decided to celebrate her role designing for Team GB in this summer's Olympics with this one-off return to London, presenting a collection of evening

Vivienne speaks out... ... and this time it would seem she’s talking a bit of sense for once The ever controversial Vivienne Westwood is at it again. This time she is complaining that younger people “have never looked so ugly” and has criticised the designers and shops that sell the clothes to the young for turning them into “clones”. “I don't notice anybody unless they look great, and every now and then they do, and they are usually 70,” argued Dame Vivienne, herself aged 70. Is she right? Do older people really have a more individual style? Have a look around you next time you’re

out and about. Also, while we’re on the subject of older women (that’s 50+) what about their footwear? I was at a party at the Tamisa Golf Hotel (which, by the way has just re-opened after their holidays) and couldn’t help but notice that we still pretty much all went for high heeled beautifully coloured and sparkly shoes. How lucky we are to live in Spain where they don’t cost the earth and, yes, the ladies were elegant to the nth degree. Girls, we’re still up there with the best! wear. However, what was that dress she had on at the party? The colour was a beautiful midnight blue in satin but you will see that most of the pictures of her standing next to Rhianna show the dress from the underarms up only. This is because the rest of it seemed to stick out like a bag with absolutely no shape whatsoever and, no, it wasn’t a “shift” style. One presenter when the photographs first came to light described it as “a blue satin binbag – what is it supposed to be?!” I remember when she first started out and saw a new collection in a flat in London, the dresses were supposed to be ‘50’s American Diner waitress style. They certainly were and I bet you could have bought them from the catering uniforms store in the West End a damn sight cheaper too! Me, I’ll stick to Burberry’s chic style thanks very much. Well done, Chris.

Rebecca sell-out One for the men tour 1st night Last year’s X Factor runner up Rebecca Ferguson sparkled in a floor length glittering white dress as she kicked off her sold-out debut solo tour that kicked off in Manchester city’s Bridgewater Hall – the first of a 14 venue tour that is to include London, Cardiff and her home town of Liverpool. The tour is named after her double platinum selling album Heaven and she sang a number of songs from the album including her debut single Nothing's Real But Love, which was released last November, and peaked at number ten in the charts. Her soon-tobe-released new single Too Good Too Lose also wowed the crowds. After the show she Tweeted: 'Thank you. Had a lovely time in Manchester. To bed for me, love everyone tonight, after one glass of wine xx.' On Monday, Rebecca revealed that she almost didn’t bother to go to the X Factor auditions but

decided to give stardom one last chance. She said: “I got the e-mail from The X Factor asking me to audition and I must admit, I’d forgotten that I’d applied because I’d arranged something else that day. I decided to go but it was more by chance than I care to think about now!”

It seems that now is the time to have a go at the men for a change. Why is it that men seem to think it’s OK to go around all the time in a pair of jeans that look like they’ve had them for the past 50 years? They very often have the crotch down to the poor wearer’s knees (isn’t that a bit like trying to walk in a pencil skirt that you can hardly move in?). Guys, we wear them with gorgeous high heels and look good in them – not tatty trainers!) and because they’ve slipped right down, they often have frayed bottoms too (the trousers, not the men). It’s just too easy for you to pull on your much loved tatty jeans and trainers but, if your female friends turned out in the same thing all the time, what

would you think? Tatty Bat would be one thing I’ll bet! A good, well fitting pair of jeans can look great, especially with really good shoes and a cashmere jumper at weekend for walking round the shops or with the dog along the paseo or even in a nightclub sometimes but there are other things to wear. Chinos, if they’re well fitting, can look good with a nice shirt and jacket (watch those colour contrasts though lads) but a really good pair of trousers, even tweed, or a beautiful twill looks even better. Then of course, there’s the DJ dinner suit. Men, if it works for James Bond, why wouldn’t it work for you?! Oh, and if you don’t know what twill is, ask your girlfriend, wife or mother.

Cancer drug clears Alzheimer's brain plaques

Immune cells 'starve' HIV Some cells in the body can repel attacks from HIV by starving the virus of the building blocks of life, an international team of researchers have discovered. Viruses cannot replicate on their own; they must hijack other cells and turn them into virus production factories. The study showed how some parts of the immune system destroy their own raw materials, stopping HIV. HIV attacks the immune system and can

Parkinson's brain cells made in lab Scientists in the US have successfully made human brain cells in the lab that are an exact replica of genetically caused Parkinson's disease. The breakthrough means they can now see exactly how mutations in the parkin gene cause the disease in an estimated one in 10 patients with Parkinson's. It also offers a realistic model to test new treatments on – a hurdle that has blighted research efforts until now. The researchers described their work as a "gamechanger". Studying human neurons is critical in Parkinson's disease since animal models that lack the parkin gene do not develop the condition, rendering them useless for this research purpose.

weaken the body's defences to the point that everyday infections become fatal. However, not all parts of the immune system become subverted to the virus' cause. Macrophages and dendritic cells, which have important roles in orchestrating the immune

response, seem to be more resistant, and last year researchers identified the protein SAMHD1 as playing a vital part in this resistance. They said that even though they believe they know how it works, they cautioned that they were not sure it could be used in therapy.

Destructive plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer's patients were rapidly cleared by researchers testing a cancer drug on mice at the Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. They reported the plaques were broken down at "unprecedented" speed and subsequent tests also showed an improvement in some brain function. The exact cause of Alzheimer's remains unknown, but one of the leading theories involves the formation of clumps of a protein called beta-amyloid. These damage and kill brain cells, eventually resulting in memory problems and the

inability to think clearly. Clearing protein plaques is a major focus of Alzheimer's research and drugs are already being tested in human clinical trials. Specialists said the results of the latest US study were promising, but warned that successful

drugs in mice often failed to work in people. The disease is likely to become more common as people live longer. The Alzheimer's Society predicts the number of people with dementia will reach a million by 2021 in the UK alone.

Sandy Tash An SOS from SOS We are sad to say that SOS Animal Refuge has been on the move. We have complied with a notice to quit issued by the local council, which gave us 10 days notice to vacate the refuge we had created in Churriana. Unfortunately the land did not have the necessary permissions that we had been led to believe existed. One consequence of this is that the Junta de Andalucia has also issued us with a 3,001 euro fine – thereby proving the old adage that it never rains but it pours! With much help from volunteers and other folk we successfully vacated the premises within the time limit. It was a big job, and our dogs are now in temporary locations, including foster homes.

We have been searching for a new home, not made easy by the fact that each council has different – and in some cases, well nigh impossible – conditions to meet. While that search has been going on all our dogs have been safe and well cared for, and we have continued to secure new loving homes for them here in Spain, in Sweden, Switzerland and in the UK. We are hoping to find a permanent location soon. In the meantime our solicitor has appealed against the fine but with no expectation of success – ignorance is no defence although it seems a shame to impose a fine on a charity which was merely saving the lives of dogs – and which was regularly visited by local police who brought dogs to us!

English, and my bills would be in English. So here we are at the time for my first bill (they charge two monthly), six days ago they took money out of my bank account to the tune of 436 euros – the amount was acceptable to me because Endesa had not read my meter for nine months and I had been paying ridiculously low bills. Thinking to myself, well surely I will get my bill any day soon, to date I still haven't received a paper bill telling me how they arrived at the 436 euros. So at a quarter to two today I telephoned them and asked to speak to somebody in English. A young lady said in broken English that English speaking

customer services was only available between 10 am and 2 pm – so I reminded her that it was only a quarter to two – "there is nobody here " she replied. This company appear to be enrolling people onto their books by telling porkies – in a nutshell they are no better than Endesa. No, I do not live way out in the campo, I live in the centre of Coin and I have my mail delivered to my door five days a week so obviously Iberdrola took my money well before they have sent me a bill. What is so damned annoying is that, as my dear mother would have said, "Valerie they've got you by the short and curlies!"

M

ars is coming back into view again after almost two years and reaches it’s closest point to Earth on March 3rd when it will be 100 million km from us. Look to the east after about 9.00pm and you will see Mars shining like a very bright, red coloured star.

T

he idea that Mars supported life has raged for centuries and Martian little green men have been the staple of many a sci-fi movie or book. Eminent astronomers have also helped along the idea of Martian life. In 1877 the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli claimed to have observed ‘canals’ criss-crossing the surface of Mars – he summarised that these canals were built by intelligent creatures to carry water from the polar icecaps across the planet to dry desert areas. In 1895, American astronomer Percival Lowell published his book ‘Mars and its Canals’, and he agreed that the canals were the work of a longgone civilisation. This idea led British writer H. G. Wells to write ‘The War of the Worlds’ in 1897, telling of an invasion by aliens from Mars.

U

nfortunately Schiaparelli’s canals were probably an optical illusion as they have never been observed since then. Mars is such a small world and so far away that even through a modest sized telescope it rarely shows very much more than a red coloured disc and it takes some of the largest telescopes to see any of the surface details.

M

ars is the second smallest planet in the Solar System, only Mercury is smaller. But despite its size, Mars is the one planet most like Earth. It has frozen icecaps at the north and south of the planet which shrink and grow during the Martian seasons. It has two tiny potato-shaped moons called Phobos and Deimos which are probably asteroids that were captured by Mars’ gravity. And Mars also boasts the tallest mountain in the Solar System; Olympus Mons is three times taller than Mount Everest.

I

t has an atmosphere of mainly carbon dioxide and traces of oxygen. The very definite red colour of Mars is caused by iron in the Martian soil oxidising, literally turning rusty due to the presence of oxygen in the atmosphere – and water. An orbiting

surveyor craft that is currently mapping Mars in great detail has detected evidence of possible underground water deposits that occasionally seep out onto the surface of Mars causing deep ravines to be carved out. Canyons that dwarf even the Grand Canyon on Earth have been discovered running for many miles across the surface and are clues to Mars once being covered in oceans millions of years ago.

T

wo NASA rovers called ‘Spirit’ and ‘Opportunity’ have been driving around Mars and exploring the surface for almost 10 years now and have sent back amazing images of clouds, snow and even mini whirlwinds scurrying across the Martian deserts. Frozen ice has been found just below the Martian soil again pointing to a once very wet Mars.

A

new rover called ‘Curiosity’ is currently on its way to Mars and is due to land in August 2012. Curiosity is about the size of a Volkswagen beetle and is the most advanced machine ever. It is equipped with a multitude of scientific instruments specifically designed to search not only for life living there now, but whether life could ever have existed in the past. By studying the minerals trapped in the Martian soil it can be determined whether conditions were ever right for even the most basic forms of single cell life to exist on Mars.

I

t’s pretty much agreed that a little green Martian is unlikely to be photographed skipping across the surface on his way to the shops, but scientists are beginning to think that the answer to David Bowie’s question is ‘probably, but a very long time ago’.

Sky Sports continues to reveal details of its 2012 venture into F1 broadcasting, with the announcement of Dolby digital sound following hot on the heels of other innovations on both its television and online coverage. Executive producer Martin Turner commented, "The stunning HD pictures will now be matched by stunning Dolby digital 5.1 surround sound audio that will help take our viewers trackside. This is another example of us giving F1 the Sky Sports treatment and I know those that hear the coverage will be amazed by it."

Trulli replaced by Petrov at Caterham Russian Vitaly Petrov has replaced Italian veteran Jarno Trulli at Caterham for 2012.

will play a huge role in our development as we fight to join the established teams ahead."

Trulli, 37, was under contract to the team but has been dropped after a tough 2011 season and the arrival of Petrov with a substantial sponsorship package. The move is likely to end the career of a man who has been in F1 since 1997 and won the 2004 Monaco Grand Prix.

Petrov said: "This is a very exciting day for me. "I have been training hard all winter and am ready to get back into the cockpit and go to work. "From what I have seen already, our new car is another good step forward from 2011 and now I cannot wait to see how it feels when we get to Barcelona."

Petrov, 27, joins Caterham after two years at Renault, now re-named Lotus, and will partner Heikki Kovalainen. Team principal Tony Fernandes said the decision to ditch Trulli had "not been an easy one", adding: "It was one we made to ensure we give fresh impetus across the whole team and with a realistic eye on the global economic market. "As the first Russian to race in F1 [Petrov] carries the hopes of a huge nation with ease and his talents, experience with one of our current competitors, and insights on and off track

Temperatures rise for C.O.G.S. at Cabopino After the cold spell we have been feeling recently, we arrived at the golf course to clear skies and the warm sun on our backs. Perfect golfing conditions, but the overall scores were very low. Not an easy course if you’re not on your game. Twentytwo players made the journey and the results are as follows. Nearest to the pin on hole 13, Alan Loftus. Nearest the pin in two shots on hole 16, Ian Hold. Longest drive on hole 10, Guillermo Buero.

(Bill as we call him as we can’t pronounce his name). Team winners with 86 points were Andy Macfarlane, Charles Randell, Heikki Kontinnen and Nig Bowler. In the main comp of the day for the individual prize third place with 26 points went to Gerry Owens. In second place with 29 points was Heikki Kontinnen. In first place and a very popular win with 30 points was Joe King. Well done again Joe and thanks for the

drinks. Terry’s par three competition was as follows. Hole 7 Brian Millwood, Hole 15 Terry Birtles. The days winners for the prize money was shared between Joe King and Alan Loftus each with 8 points. The wooden spoon was won by, (with not many points), Adam Robinson. (I am only writing this with the hope that Adam is back working abroad again and will not read this article, or I might get a slap.) Thanks to Mike and the

staff at The Bistro for putting up with us and Martin the Chef for cooking up the bubble and squeak with eggs. Our next outing is at Lauro golf on the 22nd of March at 11.00hrs and as always all

World Cup Finals. Georgia, who are ranked 14 in the World ( just below Scotland , 11, and Italy, 12) and who won last year´s European Cup, were expected to run out easy winners against Spain who are ranked 22 in the world. However, Spain are beginning to show why they are being recognised as one of the stronger European nations outside of the 6Nations, and they won convincingly with a 25-18

Tuesday the 14th of February turned out to be a lovely sunny day. And those who came along to the Mijas Bowls Club Fun Day had a great time. All the members shared in the fun of the day, and dressed accordingly, with hearts and red being the theme for the day. The best dressed prize went to Maureen Huddlestone. The prizes for the best scores were won by Linda Hall for the ladies and Des Huddlestone took the men’s prize. The prize for the game of skittles was won for the men by Roy Graveling and the ladies by Sheila

Andre Villas-Boas wants Chelsea backing Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has called for the club's hierarchy to back his long-term vision for the Blues. Speaking ahead of his club's crucial last 16 first-leg tie away against Napoli, Villas-Boas insists that, while he has the full backing of owner Roman Abramovich, he wants more vocal support "coming from the top". Villas-Boas's comments comes after he was booed during Saturday's 1-1 draw against Birmingham in the FA Cup.

touches, it all came down at the 10th. Haas went first and drained the long birdie putt to put the pressure squarely on the third-round co-leaders and good friends. Mickelson hit a poor bunker shot and the ball stopped almost eight feet short of the hole. He was out and it was on the reigning PGA Champion's shoulders. Bradley narrowly missed his birdie effort and the title belonged to Haas.

After a 28-foot birdie putt from Mickelson and a 13-footer from Bradley on the 18th hole at Riviera forced the playoff, Haas made his long birdie try for his fourth PGA Tour title. The reigning FedExCup champion shot a twounder 69 in Sunday's final round to get in at sevenunder 277. Mickelson, who was going for back-to-back victories after his win at Pebble last week, and PGA Champion Bradley both had even-par 71s.

Dereck Chisora has "wholeheartedly" apologised for his part in a brawl with fellow Brit David Haye in Munich. The duo clashed after Chisora's defeat by defending WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on Saturday night. "I have let my family, my team and worst of all the sport I love down," added Chisora in a statement. Haye also released a statement, saying he would, if requested, "happily assist the boxing authorities with any investigation they wish to launch". Haye is suspected of grievous bodily harm which, if proven, carries a prison sentence of six months to 10 years.
