NOT SAFE TO DOCK ON NEARER DESROCHES ISLAND - WORLD NEWS

Second Italian cruise ship in trouble The Italian cruise ship Costa Allegra, left adrift with more than 1,000 people on board after a power failure caused by a fire in the generator on Monday, now faces a longer journey than scheduled.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ship's owners Costa Cruises said that maritime experts had advised not to go ahead with the planned disembarkation on the smaller but nearer Desroches Island because the facilities there were inadequate to cope with the arrival of so many people. The statement also said it was not safe enough for the ship to dock in the small port and for guests to get ashore. The ship is now being towed around 155

miles further – to the island of Mahe, which is home to the capital and largest city, Victoria. The company said helicopters would ensure the continuous supply of food and "comfort items" including flashlights. The Italian coast guard said the vessel has no airconditioning or cooking facilities and an emergency generator powering the

Well, at least it shows that people read my column! The person who owns the house that I complained kept the whole area awake for two nights last week has written in and apologised saying that she had rented the house out to people who were supposed to be making a video about some dJ’s. She says she repeatedly asked them to tone it down, was ignored and they left the place trashed when they left. let that be a warning to us all!

King's son-in-law appears in court Iñaki Urdangarin, King Juan Carlos’ son-in-law, arrived for his long-awaited closed-door testimony at a Palma de Mallorca court on Saturday to be met by scores of hecklers, including anti-monarchist and pro-Catalan independence groups, shouting “Chorizo, chorizo (thief ),” among other

insults. Visibly nervous, he stopped long enough to tell waiting journalists that he had hoped that his testimony would put an end to the ongoing press speculation that he stole public money from both the Balearics and Valencia regional governments. “I have come to tell the truth and defend my honour,” he

said. During 22 hours of interrogation by presiding judge José Castro spanning Saturday and Sunday, Urdangarin admitted he had continued conducting his private businesses two years after being ordered by King Juan Carlos to resign from the Nóos Institute. He also denied having anything to do with the

administrative side of the institute or the companies, saying they were run by his former partner Diego Torres. He insisted that his wife, the Infanta Cristina, had had nothing to do with his business affairs. At one point, the judge told Urdangarin he was being too vague after saying he couldn’t remember a lot of

Second Italian cruise ship in trouble Of the 636 passengers and 413 crew on board, 135 are Italians and 127 French, along with nearly 100 Austrians, 90 Swiss and 31 Britons. the dates and figures that were being thrown at him. Urdangarin and the Infanta Cristina left Mallorca early on Monday morning to spend 24 hours in Madrid before returning to their home in Washington D.C. Judge Castro has now to decide whether to bring charges, a process which could take several months.

The ship is at the southern end of the seas that are vulnerable to attacks by Somali pirates but attacks in the area had decreased in the past year as security improved. The Costa Allegra sailed with nine armed guards on board, and more are stationed on a nearby French fishing vessel. A government plane is also

patrolling overhead. Pirates in the area have never seized a cruise ship.

The ship is from the same fleet as the Costa Concordia, which capsized off the Italian coast on January 13th, killing 32. Its captain, Francesco Schettino, has been accused of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and abandoning ship before all those aboard were evacuated.

That is because it is now being delivered to the places where you get your copy during the day instead of overnight so, have a wander out a little later and you’ll find it in the same areas as before. One of the reasons for this is that we had received a couple of fines for “littering” from the councils (one of whose ayuntamientos had even asked for The news to be delivered to them - some people you just can’t please) and at €300 a pop, that’s expensive! So, now we meet the people who distribute The news for us and, if there’s ever any problems they know who we are and who to talk to so that it can be sorted out. We already have some different “drop-off” points and some places are getting more than they did before so you should be able to find The news easily, even if it’s a little bit later than before.

gunfighter Pat Garrett (of Billy The Kid fame) died

Judge acquitted in Franco-probe case The Supreme Court has cleared judge Baltasar Garzon of violating a 1977 amnesty law with his investigation of Franco-era crimes based on his belief that crimes against humanity should not be subject to an amnesty. A Supreme Court spokeswoman said the judges voted 6-1 to acquit him on the basis that his investigations into Franco-era crimes were defensible in legal terms. However, because of his suspension from the bar in an earlier trial, Garzon will not be able to continue with the investigation. His decision in 2008 to

investigate the disappearance of tens of thousands of people during the civil war and the subsequent dictatorship of General Francisco Franco – including ordering the excavation of mass graves – provoked fierce criticism and anger from those on the Right who argued that the point of the 1977 amnesty was to allow Spain to forget the alleged crimes of that era, and

move on. Two groups –– Clean Hands and Liberty and Identity – who brought the case against him said they did so

because Garzon had "reopened wounds which we Spaniards – whatever our political beliefs – had totally recovered from".

Deficit well over target Figures presented by Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro on Monday showed that the deficit last year was 8.51 per cent of GDP, well over the figure of 6 per cent presented by the outgoing Socialist government, and above the estimate of 8 per cent announced by the Popular Party (PP) government in December. Montoro said the main culprit was the regions, whose combined deficit of 2.94 per cent of GDP was more than double the target of 1.3 percent.

Improved image Despite the bad economic news, BBVA president Francisco González told El Pais newspaper in an interview that “the perception of Spain has changed completely; there has been a dramatic turnaround with the new government" – unlike the previous Socialist government which, he said, "took Spain to the brink of disaster due to the loss of credibility".

Basque Left 'sympathises' with ETA victims

Police arrest four Anonymous members The National Police have arrested four people who claim to be working on behalf of Anonymous and have subsequently charged them with cyber crimes. Two were arrested in Madrid on Tuesday, as well as one in Malaga and another in Pontevedra. The police said they had attacked various websites belonging to political parties, institutions and companies and had published private details of police assigned to guard

the Royal family, members of other security forces and UD&P party leader Rosa Diez on the internet. Two have been jailed, one was released with charges while the fourth, a minor, was released into the custody of his parents. The person arrested in Malaga, identified as F.J.B.D., alias

For the first time ever, the Basque radical left or abertzale has expressed “profound regret” for ETA victims and “our political position with respect to them”. However, the document released at the Kursaal conference centre in San Sebastián on Sunday did not go into further details about the 829 people killed by the Basque terrorist group during the past 40 years, nor did it call on the group to disband. All the political parties were quick to say that while the

statement was one more step towards the disappearance of ETA, it was not enough. ETA announced a “definitive” ceasefire last year and has since demanded that all ETA prisoners should be transferred to jails in the Basque Country and that

Thunder, was allegedly in charge of the computer network used by Anonymous in Spain and Latin America. The arrests from part of a wider operation called Exposure which has already led to the arrests of ten people in Argentina, six in Chile and five in Colombia.

Sacked bank director wants €10m María Dolores Amorós, the former director of the failed savings bank Banco CAM, who was fired for awarding herself a huge pension just before her bank was taken over by the Bank of Spain last year, went to court last Friday to back her claim for at least €10 million for unfair dismissal. When she arrived at the court in Alicante, she was mobbed by journalists and members of the public shouting “thief” and “crook.” Amorós was dismissed shortly after Banco CAM was taken over in July of last year when the new administrators found she had awarded herself an annual pension for life of €369,497 behind the back

of the top management. She was also alleged to have cooked the books. Amorós’ lawyers argue that her dismissal violated her fundamental rights to personal and professional dignity. She is now seeking to be reinstated or be given severance pay of €10 million for the loss of wages up until her retirement, and a further undeclared sum in compensation for her long career with the bank. Commenting on the situation at CAM after it was taken over, Bank of Spain governor Miguel Ángel Fernández Ordóñez said: “It is easy to understand why people are outraged by what has happened here.”

all police action should be halted in France as well as Spain. But in an interview published in El Pais on Sunday, Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz said the government would not discuss the transfer of ETA prisoners or even contemplate making any other concessions until the organisation disbands.

Regions and councils told to pay their bills The government approved a scheme last Friday for settling the huge backlog of unpaid bills owed by regional government and municipal councils to suppliers. Companies and individuals willing to accept a discount on what they are owed will be given priority in the pecking order. The local administrations have until March 15th to supply lists of how much they owe to individuals and companies to the Finance Ministry. They must also say how they intend to settle their debts. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría told a news conference that the government would provide guarantees to local administrations so that they can make payments from May onward. The scheme applies to bills that are dated before the start of this year and will remain in place only until the end of December.

Treasure brought safely home Last Friday, Spain's ambassador to the US watched two planes take off at 12:30EST (17:30 GMT) from MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, bearing gold and silver coins estimated to be worth $500m recovered from a sunken Spanish ship five years ago. "This is history. We bear witness to that fateful day 200 years ago," Ambassador

Jorge Dezcallar de Mazar (pictured) said. "This is not money. This is historical heritage." The US firm Odyssey Marine Exploration found the 17 tons of coins in a wreck off Portugal's Atlantic coast in 2007 and had been fighting to keep them ever since. They were taken secretly to the US “for safekeeping” but a US federal judge recently

ordered Odyssey to give Spain access to the treasure, the last in a series of legal defeats for the salvage firm. The coins arrived at the Torrejon airbase north of on Saturday Madrid, afternoon and were taken under heavy guard to the Ministry of Culture which used to house the Bank of Spain “so it is as safe as houses” an official said. The

N treasure will stay there while experts examine it more closely and its final resting place is decided on. Despite the economic situation, the ministry official said the treasure would not be sold off to pay the country's national debt, as had been rumoured. Instead the coins will be exhibited in museums around the country.

Triple rooms cost more and people were expected to share the beds with strangers. The Guam was advertised in Chinese newspapers and websites as being comfortable and clean, with satellite TV and free internet connection. it had apparently been operating for years without a licence. madrid

Brake warning denied

trenes de Buenos aires (tBa) railway company has denied a driver's claims that he warned of brake problems prior to a crash that killed 51 people last week and injured more than 700. Driver Marcos Cordoba told a local news

agency: "at every station, i radioed the controller and told him i was having problems with the brakes; and they'd just tell me: 'carry on, carry on'.” tBa has blamed the accident on what it called "human error".

uniteD states In the movie, Gekko boasted that "greed is good" and for many people that phrase came to embody the excesses of the Wall Street boom years and subsequent problems. But in his new role Mr Douglas will be playing a very different character, warning executives against

following his on-screen credo. "The movie was fiction, but the problem is real," he said in an announcement on Monday. "Our economy is increasingly dependent on the success and integrity of the financial markets. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is."

The move is a part of Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) efforts to tackle insider trading and fraud. Last year, Raj Rajaratnam, a former hedge-fund manager and founder of Galleon Group, was sentenced to 11 years

in jail and fined $10m in one of the biggest insider trading cases in American history. More than two dozen were jailed, with sentences ranging from a few months to 10 years. The FBI said that it will continue to "pursue those who cheat the system".

Argentina turns away cruise ships The Adonia and the Star Princess cruise ships carrying almost 3,000 passengers between them were turned away from the Argentine port of Ushuaia on Monday, apparently because they had visited the Falkland Islands. The two ships had arrived off Tierra Del Fuego, on the country's southern tip, but were prevented from docking. Both vessels are now heading for Punta Arenas in Chile. British diplomats in Argentina are trying to clarify what happened. The Foreign Office said it

was very concerned to hear the two ships had been refused access to Ushuaia. A spokesperson said there could be no for justification interference in free and legitimate commerce. Tensions have risen recently, as the 30th

anniversary of the Falklands war approaches. Argentina claims ownership of the islands, which it calls the Malvinas, but the UK has rejected calls for talks on the archipelago's sovereignty. Around 3,000 people live on the islands, most of whom are British citizens.

German MPs back Greece deal German MPs voted by 496 to 90 on Monday to back the second EU/IMF bailout for Greece. Chancellor Angela Merkel had urged them to support the deal, while conceding there was "no 100% guarantee" it would work. Several MPs in her party had opposed the deal but it is not known if

they were among the naysayers. Despite the five-to-one majority, many politicians and the wider population are sceptical about the bailout's effectiveness. Interior Minister HansPeter Friedrich, from the ruling Christian

Democrats' Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), had earlier argued that Greece's chances of recovery would be better if it left the eurozone. Germany will have to pay more than any other country for the €130 billion package, agreed by eurozone states last week.

Banks continue clawbacks Lloyds Banking Group is to claw back around 40% of former CEO Eric Daniels 1.45 million pound bonus payout he was given nearly two years ago, due to the banks involvement in the mis-selling of payment protection insurance.

Ewes have been carrying the Schmallenberg virus which produces deformed lambs. The new virus was first identified in Germany and the Netherlands last year causing mild to moderate symptoms in adult cattle including a reduced milk yield and diarrhoea but is also in France and Belgium and appears to have been brought into the UK from Europe. The virus has now been found on 74 farms in England. Most cases are in Norfolk and Sussex and Suffolk. At one farm in Norfolk a vet said that 8% of all lambs affected were born with deformities including legs being fused together and not being able to open

their mouths to suckle. The mother sheep show no outward signs of the virus and can, if it is a multiple birth, produce both affected and healthy lambs. The virus does not affect humans but can also affect pigs, cattle and goats and is thought to be carried by midges. It is hoped that the virus will burn itself out before the midges start circulating this year. Five of the diagnosed cases so far have been in cattle, 69 in sheep and none to date in other species. The latest positive cases have been identified on the Isle of Wight, Wiltshire, West Berkshire and Gloucestershire.

compensation claims. The bank will be announcing more clawbacks for the 2011 bonuses on Friday. And on Sunday, HSBC announced that they will be clawing back parts of bonuses from their executives who had been in charge of misselling of complex financial products to elderly and disabled customers for which they were fined £10.5 million in December.

George Osborne says that he is looking for a rise in the tax threshold to £10,000 but declared that he will not be borrowing money to pay for it in the Budget next month.

The state-backed bank will be stripping 13 of its executives of part of the bonuses they were awarded following the scandle that has cost £3.2 billion in

The already proposed increase means the threshold would rise from £7,475 to £8,105 so that tax payers will be £126 per year better off. But increasing it to £10,000 would save the average taxpayer £505 in tax next year.

Murdoch’s new Sunday Sun sold three million copies after hitting news stands for the first time. The tycoon announced the news on Twitter saying that sales exceeded his expectations. On Friday he had said that he would have been very happy if it had sold two million copies. The paper promised readers it would be “fearless, outspoken, mischievous and fun.” It was further announced that the newspaper had

appointed a “readers Champion” to deal with feedback and to correct significant errors from the public and also said that the closure of The News Of The World had been a “sobering experience”.

Siblings in two different boat dramas Just weeks after her son was caught up in the Costa Concordia incident when the ship ran aground just off the Italian Coast while 19-year-old dancer James was working on it, British mother Jayne Thomas has revealed that her daughter, Rebecca has been working as a dancer since last May on the Costa Allegra that was stranded in pirate infested waters near the Seychelles due to a fire in the engine room. However, there were no reports of injuries on the Allegra and the boat is being towed to the Seychelles and is due to arrive tomorrow (Thursday). Mrs Thomas says she has not heard from her daughter, whose contract was to be up for renewal in July, due to a lack of any power on the vessel but that she is not worried now that she knows the vessel is being towed to a safe haven. Speaking from her home in Sutton

I really didn't think disaster could strike twice. The liner was making its way back to Europe, having spent three months in the Indian Ocean, when the fire broke out.She said James has no wish to work on cruise ships after the Concordia disaster, in which 32 people are believed to have died but has no idea how her daughter will react to tthe latest episode.

Banks at it again A move by the UK’s Treasury to close two loopholes in tax laws comes as an embarrassment to Barclays Bank after it tried to avoid paying more than £500 million in tax dodges despite the bank having signed up to a code of practice against tax avoidance and the fact that it has recently stressed the importance of “good citizenship”. Barclays has stressed that it does not agree with the treasury’s estimate of £500 million, insisting that £200 million would be nearer the mark! It is the first time the current government has clawed back revenues retrospectively ensuring billions of pounds of taxes will have to be paid in the future. Barclays said it flagged up the schemes to HMRC "in a spirit of full transparency" and insisted that it always operates within the law. But the government decided the schemes, while legal, were in breach of a code of practice that has seen all the major banks pledge to pay their fair share of taxes. A spokeswoman for the bank added: "Barclays respects the decision of

HMRC and the government to adjust the tax laws and will, of course, comply with the modified law once it is in place." One of the tax schemes involved Barclays avoiding paying corporation tax on profits it made by buying back its own IOU-notes. The Treasury said it will move to block the recent use of the scheme by the bank and by any other company. The other scheme – believed to be devised by Barclays – saw investment funds trying to receive tax credits from the Treasury on non-taxable income. The government brought in legislation on Monday to block future use of the scheme.

said the government was clear that "businesses must pay the tax they owe when they owe it. We do not take today's action lightly, but the potential tax loss from this scheme and the history of previous abuse in this area mean that this is a circumstance where the decision to change the law with full retrospective effect is justified," he said. Prime Minister David Cameron's official spokesman said: "What you have learned today is that the government takes tax avoidance very seriously. We will continue to take tough action on tax avoidance because we need to make sure that the tax system is fair for everybody."

Pressure on to scrap NHS reforms Labour have renewed pressure for NHS reforms to be scrapped after securing an urgent Commons grilling of the government over Nick Clegg's backing for further changes, according to the Press Association yesterday, Tuesday. Commons Speaker John Bercow granted a request by shadow Health secretary Andy Burnham (pictured) for an urgent question about the latest development in the drawnout saga. Mr Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, sought to head off a revolt within his Liberal Democrat party by endorsing moves to limit competition in the health service. He issued a joint letter with Baroness Williams, the most prominent Lib Dem critic of the shake-up, as activists prepared to raise concerns at the party's spring conference next week.

Downing Street indicated that Prime Minister David Cameron had been consulted on the letter and was happy to sanction further changes to the flagship Bill. There would be no "significant" amendments however, Number 10 insisted, only moves to provide "reassurance and clarity" to coalition colleagues. The Health and Social Care Bill has already been substantially altered amid strident opposition from many health professionals – with significant groups remaining hostile to the proposals. Sources close to Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said he was "relaxed" about the changes sought by Mr Clegg, which he did not believe would substantially alter the impact of the legislation. Labour dismissed the letter as a "panic move" by Mr Clegg to save him from confrontation with activists, who last year

Mr Burnham said the "cosmetic" amendments fell well short of Lady Williams' earlier demand for the section of the Bill which deals with competition to be dropped in its entirety. It came as Reform, a centre-right think-tank, called for the competition provisions to be retained to improve "quality and productivity". Mr Lansley will respond in person to the urgent question, his spokesman said, cancelling a speech to town hall leaders and patient groups in order to

Echar Today we're going to try to get idiomatic. By that I mean nothing more or less than learning a few phrases which will make you sound like someone who knows what you're talking about. Of course, when people start rattling back to you at top speed it may be a different kettle of fish but instead of getting in a panic, try to relax and see if you can get the gist of what they are saying. You don't need to understand every word. Just get the idea they are trying to convey. So, we are looking at the verb "echar". It can mean to pour, to throw, to add. Let's find some everyday situations where it might be useful for us to know .

Echar agua is to pour water, Voy a echar agua en el vaso - I'm going to pour water into the glass. ¿Quieres que te echo un poco de agua? - Shall I pour you some water? But, on the other hand, if you say echar agua en el mar (literally pouring water in the sea) it is the equivalent of carrying coals to Newcastle. "Martin, llegó en España con sus cinco perros. Es como echar agua en el mar." "Martin arrived in Spain with his five dogs. Talk about carrying coals to Newcastle!" If you are cooking you will often echar sal - add salt (al gusto - to taste) If you are tired it is a good idea to echar una siesta - to have a siesta Después de tanto trabajo voy a echarme una siesta - After working so much I'm going to have a siesta If you want to have a look at something you can echar un vistazo El coche hace un ruido extraño. ¿Quieres echarlo un vistazo?. - The car is making a strange noise. Can you have a look at it? If someone is furious you can describe this as echando chispas (literally giving forth sparks) Cuando María vio la casa después de la fiesta estaba echando chispas When Maria saw the house after the party she was hopping mad. Echar de menos is to miss somebody or something Echo de menos a mis nietos - I miss my grandchildren. But not to miss the bus which is perder el autobús (literally to lose the bus).

New regulations for beach goers Benalmadena Town Council has approved a regulation aimed at getting people spending the day on the beach to behave in a more civic-minded way. Councillor Inmaculada Vasca said the 46 articles in the new regulation are intended to raise people's awareness to make the beach a better place for all the family. One article stipulates that the

hamaqueros (the men who rent out the hammocks) will be responsible for seeing off people trying to peddle their goods along the beach. Another forbids towels and parasols between the line of

hammocks and the water's edge, because that area is rented out to the hamaqueros. The beach will also be off limits until 11 am to give the cleaners time to do their work. Partido Popular councillor

Marbella council targets pet owners More than 400 pet owners have been fined since Marbella's Local Police, Green Patrol and Cleanliness inspectors started patrolling the streets just over a month ago. More than half were caught with the dogs off the leash while the rest (137) did not clean up their dogs' poo or did not have muzzles on dogs classified as dangerous breeds. Owners of the latter are also asked for proof of

insurance against dog bites. Owners of these dogs face fines of up to €3,000 while the other fines range from €75 to €500. Councillor Antonio Espada said the streets were already noticeably cleaner. He said the

measures had been justified by the number of complaints made by the general public involving dog owners. He said he hoped three planned “dog parks” would be ready for use by the beginning of the summer.

Residents don't want ITV station Residents of the Santangelo Norte district in Benalmadena took advantage of a council meeting last week to protest against the construction of an ITV station in their area. They said they did not oppose the station per se but would prefer to have it located in a nonresidential area. Councillors belonging to the Partido Popular and BOLI proposed looking for another site for the station. However, Mayor Javier Carnero said the site already chosen was at least 2,000 metres away from any houses, and asked the protesters to think of the good of the majority.

Suspected murderer detained The national police have arrested a 30-year-old moroccan who is wanted in France on charges of homicide, kidnapping and grievous bodily harm. When stopped at a police checkpoint the man had produced an ID card which belonged to his older brother. Murder rate rises last year, 22 people met a violent end in malaga province, seven more than in 2010. It was the worst figure since 2006, when there were 23 murders, one more than the year before. Those were the years when the Costa del Sol became known as the Costa del Crime because of the increase in foreign gang warfare. One of the worst murders then was that of an Italian hairdresser and a seven-year-old child who was gunned down in a marbella hotel. pujerra

T

he PP government was less than two months old when the Left took to the streets looking for trouble. Two weeks ago, a protest by students in Valencia against the local (PP-run) government’s education cuts ended with a scuffle between police and students in which a couple of the latter got a bit bruised. But it gave them an excuse to turn out in force at the beginning of last week, targeting a lack of heatin g and money at one particular secondary school. That protest ended in 45 “students” being hauled off by batonwielding riot police.

H

owever, the protesters forget we live in a country which enjoys a fair degree of press freedom and by the end of the week, the truth started to emerge. First of all, the heating at the Lluis Vives Institute had not been turned off for lack of money at any time this winter. In fact, there is currently a total of €82,000 in the school’s bank account which allows it to pays its bills, despite the local government’s cuts. An education department spokesman in Valencia told the press that the cuts, in fact, don’t affect the students at all, only the teachers.

I

t then turned out that of the 45 people detained, only one attends the Lluis Vives Institute. The rest were all too old to be attending secondary school – 20 were aged from 18 to 23 and the rest were 24 or over, including a 71-year-old man. Only 30 of the 300 people in the crowd identified by the police were of school age. These figures did not surprise the police at all, who know these professional protesters only too well. The regional president of the Professional Police Syndicate, José Manuel León, told reporters that “these pea ceful protests turn violent because of the anti-system radicals who stir up the students, then when the police move in they push the students into the first rows while they fade into the background”.

H

e pointed out that what the press did not report about the first peaceful protest, when the police did not wear riot gear, was what they had to put up with – insults, kicks, spitting and even biting.

A

nd what the press didn’t give much coverage to was the fact that the schools in one Valencian

A right Royal mess municipality governed by the Socialist Party haven’t had the heating turned on at all this winter.

B

y the end of the week, we also knew that the personable young man who acted as spokesman for the students earlier in the week is an ardent fan of Fidel Castro and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez – not surprising since he was caught by a news camera proclaiming that “the streets of Valencia are going to burn with fire and run with blood”. But when he was interviewed on Telesur, Alberto Ordóñez acted as if butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth. He said he didn’t repent his words, they were a reaction to police brutality which was what started off the violence in the first place. He was very vague about what he studied and where because “I’m being threatened by groups on the extreme Right”.

T

he Socialist Party is desperate to take over the student movement but perhaps it should think twice before being tarred with the same brush as its main rival, the Communistdominated Izquierda Unida (United Left) which is trickier than a bagful of monkeys when it comes to trying to pull the wool over the public’s eyes.

I

didn’t have room for the picture I wanted to publish last week because – as usual – I ran on too much. So here it is this week. Candido Mendez, head of the General Workers Union, sported a €10,000 solid gold Rolex at a recent press conference. He has also been snapped in the past year wearing watches by Raymond Weil and Maurice Lacroix, valued at around €7,000 each.

M

ost unseemly for a union leader in a country where more than five million people are out of work. Somebody should tell him to pull his sleeves down at the next conference!

I

n some ways you have to feel sorry for Iñaki Urdangarin. He has replaced Francisco Camps as Spain’s poster boy for bad behaviour without even trying. This greedy son-in-law is dragging the entire royal family down with him as he faces public corruption charges for his alleged dealings at the Nóos Institute – the non-profit entity he and partner Diego Torres set up to organise regional sports and tourism and collected a lot of money in doing so. Now it appears that Urdangarin disobeyed his father-in-law, King Juan Carlos, who in 2006 ordered him to quit all his private business dealings and find a more transparent job that would not fall under so much public scrutiny. Urdangarin admitted this weekend that he went against the king’s wishes and continued to work behind the scenes, helping to collect the outstanding money owed to Nóos by making a series of phone calls and sending a few email messages. Off with his head, some monarchists are crying. Tax inspectors say that Urdangarin diverted to his own private businesses generous portions of the estimated €6.5 million Nóos received from the regional governments of Balearics and Valencia between 20022006.

S

o where should the sympathy fall? It is difficult to get a fair trial in this country – or for that matter, anywhere else – when the media is on your back. The circus started two weeks before the royal bad boy was set to appear in a Palma de Mallorca court to testify about his role at Nóos, when a camera crew from Telecinco tracked him and his wife, the Infanta Cristina, at their home in Chevy Chase, Maryland – a Washington DC suburb where many of the country’s movers and shakers live quietly. Since 2009, Urdangarin has had a “respectable” job with Telefónica where he serves as a representative for the telecom giant’s profitable Latin American division. It was the king’s wishes that he take his family and get out of town after the monarch got wind that there was an investigation brewing. Not a nice move for someone who is the main target of a judicial inquiry. But Urdangarin didn’t want to upset his father-in-law any further and took the advice. But once again he demonstrated that he may be dangerous extra baggage for the Spanish royals.

I

n a bizarre incident, a Telecinco reporter approached Urdangarin on the street as he was walking to meet

his family at a local cinema. Naturally, he told the journalist he had no comment while waving her off as she kept pace with him. Then suddenly when Urdangarin saw that the camera crew was on his tail, the lanky former Spanish Olympic handball champion made a mad dash down the street as if he was running for his life. This strange image has been broadcast and rebroadcast over and over. What is Iñaki running from?, Telecinco facetiously asked their viewers during the promo for the special programme. Another painful image for the Duke of Palma.

A

ccording to El País’ royal watcher Mabel Gález, Urdangarin’s hotfooting did not set in well with Zarzuela royal palace. The Bourbons perhaps haven’t had so much eye-raising publicity since the playboy antics of King Alfonso XIII’s eldest son, Alfonso de Bourbon – the current monarch’s uncle – who was killed in a car crash in the early 1940s in Florida. Urdangarin got word from Zarzuela that he must face the music and quit portraying himself in a manner that is “not befitting of a member of the royal family”.

C

ome Saturday, the day of the testimony, and Urdangarin was met by a very unruly crowd. No doubt the public’s mind is already made up. Hecklers taunted him with chants of “chorizo, chorizo” (thief, in Spanish), while holding up placards poking fun at the royals. Some signs showed King Juan Carlos in a Don Corleone gesture surrounded by the puppet strings of the The Godfather’s movie poster. As he made the so-called “walk of shame” – the passage way leading to the Palma de Mallorca courtroom – a nervous Urdangarin was clearly not amused. Facing heat before the judge and back at Zarzuela, no one would wish this situation on their worst enemy.

Employment law reforms The new reforms, although largely unpopular with workers, will be welcomed by employers. The generous payment scheme on dismissal which Spain had was often a major obstacle for businesses in the current economic climate as the option of dismissing an employee in an attempt to reduce costs could be an expensive one. The high severance payments could also have been seen as a deterrent to hiring and the aim of the new reforms, which include the reduction of the severance payment, is said to be to increase employment. As part of the reforms, which came into effect on

13th February 2012, an employer will now be able to dismiss an employee by paying 33 day’s salary for each year worked instead of the current 45 days, or just 20 days if there are profit losses over a nine month period. In Spain the Trade Unions have a great deal of power and control over the contracts and pay packages employers can offer through the use of collective bargaining agreements. However, under the new changes businesses in Spain, in situations where for example they are facing economic hardship, will be

able to withdraw from such agreements and have increased freedom as a result in relation to matters such as working hours, shift work, remuneration, working systems and performance. More specifically, businesses will also be permitted in such circumstances to suspend a worker’s contract or reduce their hours. The changes also provide that absences of 20% over two months, or 25% over four months, can amount to a reason for dismissal. On the hiring side, organisations are incentivised by the new reforms to hire employees under 30 and those

unemployed for a long period, by the provision of quite substantial tax benefits. Hiring should now be more attractive also because employers with less than 50 employees can now employ workers under an indefinite contract which allows for a trial period of a year. Additionally of benefit to employees, employers are obliged to offer training to employees with more than one year’s service. Although the dismissal of an employee may now be considered less

Maria Corder expensive and less problematic, employers can face legal action if they do not follow the correct procedures or do not fall within the circumstances provided by the legislation.

Liberty Seguros launches New Queen’s Counsel appointed for Gibraltar new cashback promotion HE The Governor, Sir Adrian Johns, announced updated guidelines for the appointment of Queen’s Counsel in Gibraltar last year. The guidelines, which replace those in effect since 1986, had been drafted following consultation with the Judicial Service Commission and the Bar Council in Gibraltar. The rank of Queen’s Counsel in Gibraltar is available to a limited number of senior legal practitioners who have a minimum of 15 years’ experience since Call or Admission to the Bar and who will normally be expected to have displayed competence in litigation, although, in exceptional cases an applicant may come from a non-litigation background. Whatever the background, those appointed as QC will be of the highest standard of professional reputation and integrity, and recognised as being of eminent stature in the practice of the law. There will be a biennial invitation for applications, which will be considered by the QC Appointments Committee. The Committee will be chaired by the Chief Justice and will comprise two members

nominated by the Judicial Services Commission (of which they may be members) and two members appointed by the Governor, acting in his discretion. The Governor, as HM’s Representative, will make appointments to the rank of QC on the advice of the QC Appointments Committee. The Governor said: “The last QC to be appointed in Gibraltar was in 2002 and so I am delighted that we now have an up to date process that will enable us to recognise the quality and status of the top practitioners in Gibraltar’s legal profession through the prestigious appointment as Queen’s Counsel.” The new Appointments of Queen’s Counsel for Gibraltar were announced just last week and HE The Governor, Sir Adrian Johns,

appointed the following as Queen’s Counsel : Robert Michael Vasquez Mark William Isola Keith Azopardi Gilbert Horace Licudi Michael Llamas Gillian Maria Guzman The appointments were made on the advice received from the QC Appointments Committee formed last year. Sir Adrian said “It gives me great pleasure to make these appointments – the first for many years in Gibraltar and the first under the new process established last year. I would like to offer my congratulations to those appointed QC and my thanks to the Appointments Committee, which has had to take some difficult decisions given the wealth of quality in the candidates nominated.”

Community News Women’s World Day of Prayer On Friday 2nd March over three million people worldwide will be praying and worshipping together during the annual Women’s World Day of Prayer. The service is written by a different country each year and that country then becomes the focus of the world's prayers on the day itself. This year’s theme is ‘Let Justice Prevail’ and has been prepared by the Christian women of Malaysia. Locally there will be a

service at St Andrew’s Church, Los Boliches at 4.30pm. Although organised and led by women, this is essentially a day of prayer for everybody, demonstrating our solidarity with our sisters and brothers in other countries and all are welcome to attend. Further information can be found on the WWDP website at www.wwdpnatcomm.org.

e News Help Desk

We at The News have been asked all manner of questions for many years and it seemed to us that there was a need for a central service where you can go as a first point of call if something is worrying you. Duncan Burrell has lived in Spain for 30 years and has experience of dealing with most things. He has bought and sold houses, owned businesses, brought up two children with all that entails here with schools, medical problems etc., etc. and between us we have over 45 years of experience dealing with all manner of problems. The News Help Desk is open on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday every week from 1pm until 3pm in The News offices at Sierra Chica, opposite the La Trocha Commercial Centre, Coin and on Sundays at La Trocha Market (near the entrance to the escalators) from 10am until mid-day. Both locations are on the A355 which is the road that runs between Coin and Cartama. If you live on the coast and can’t make it up here, give us a call and we can make an appointment to see you down there. Don’t go to someone who’s going to charge you a fortune for something that can so easily be fixed – The News Help Desk may well be able to sort it out for you at a far lesser cost. Ours is a service where you can come for advice on how to deal with any problems you may have in connection with living in Spain, including legalising of houses, businesses, cars, etc. And if there’s something we can’t help you with, we will know someone who can, and do it legally too! If you can’t come and see us personally, call Duncan Burrell on 607 590 977 or call us here at The News on 952 454 491 and let us help you to be able to see a light at the end of that very dark tunnel at last!

The symbol of the Women's World Day of Prayer was designed in 1982 for the service prepared by women of Ireland, both north and south, and was then adopted as the International Logo. For details of St Andrew’s Chaplaincy visit www.standrew’s-cofespain.com Written by Caroline Macfarlane

Burglaries up Burglaries are on the rise in Andalucia and it seems that the thieves get in and take everything – and that means everything including clothes, food, even the taps from the sink and bath as in the case of a four-bedroomed house in Manilva in the past few days. Coin has also been targeted with over ten burglaries being carried out in one week at the beginning of December and more recently. In that particular area the Guardia Civil are keeping a close eye on things but you still need to make sure that all your locks and bolts are good

Iceland help Families of the Fallen charity The Iceland store in Puerto Banus recently held an event in aid of the charity Families of the Fallen whose motto is “One life lost in action does not mean a whole family falls.” Families of the Fallen is a new charity set up to concentrate on delivering much needed extra financial help to the families of British servicemen and servicewomen killed in the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. That need has been identified and confirmed by key supporters in the military. The event also marked the first birthday for the

popular store with manager Rob Harley and his staff of 26 overseeing the day with customers sampling a new range of sandwiches and Eton Mess – which was a firm favourite for those of us with a sweet tooth! Other than the yummy food on offer you could also get hair nail and beauty advice and treatments. The Iceland store is set to expand this year and will be stocking all the top brands we know and love. A similar event is planned for the Mijas store and will be held on Saturday 5th May.

ones and that windows and all doors, gates etc., are closed and locked. Also, ask your neighbours to keep a good eye out. Remember there’s nothing wrong with asking someone strange to the area what they are doing and, just to be polite, can you help them! That way they’ll know that people in are keeping a sharp lookout and they’ll probably move on – preferably to another country!

DAVID THE DOGMAN: Holidays Holidays: will my pet be OK with a stranger? Dogs are creatures that do not live in the past or indeed in the future, they are present living creatures. Present living means they react to what is happening now. They do not sit thinking ‘I wonder what Mum is cooking for me tonight.’ Likewise they do not think in the past ‘I wonder when Uncle Jack is coming round like he did a few months back’ Obviously they are creatures of habit with routine, sound and smell. Simply put on your make up and pick up your bag and leash, wow what a reaction! If you are going away and

someone moves into your home to look after them and feed them, again they will react to the present time and be quite content. Anyone staying should take them out for walk a few times a day, always with a leash on however much he or she will think that the dogs know them well. Do not worry about leaving your pets if a friend stays in your home but do stress that all gates and doors must always be closed.

How cruel this is? A well known “dog trainer” on the Costa del Sol dumped his dogs in kennels promising to come back in a week – he never came back. I managed to find one of them a good home.

DUMPING YOUR DOG

If you are going back to the UK and cannot afford to take your dog, why not discuss this with your local animal shelter. I have heard that a few of them have in fact assisted people who are short of money to get their dog/cat back to the UK.

A number of people are dumping their cat or dog and just driving off and going back to the UK.

One had a friend who was in pet transport, a few wines later he agreed to take them!

So before dumping your dog chat with a rescue centre, or maybe place an advert in this paper ‘Anyone going back to the UK by car that could take my pet for a small fee? ‘ Remember if you dump your dog the likely result will be death by a car accident or starvation. How can anyone to this to a former pet? As an animal lover, it breaks my heart to write like this.

Pride of the Lions

The Mijas La Cala Lions club recently had the honour of hosting Wayne Madden, First Vice President of the international association of Lions clubs, to a round of golf followed by luncheon. Wayne takes over the association’s presidency in July when he will lead the international association of Lions clubs, the world’s largest non-government organisation (NGO) with a worldwide membership in excess of 1.35 million representing some 45,000 clubs in 206 countries and

territories. But that’s not all! The association’s international board of directors, with representatives from more than 30 countries, has chosen the Costa del Sol for a series of high-level meetings in April 2013 when around 100 delegates from around the world will make their headquarters in Marbella. The final preparations are well advanced to showcase what the Coast has to offer and full details will be published nearer the time, so watch this space!

Good Companions to Cudeca

left to right: Tony White, Joan Hunt, Susan Hannem

Joan Hunt, President and Founder of Cudeca Hospice, was privileged to receive a donation of 10,000 euros at the Annual General Meeting of the Good Companions Club on 14th February. The club was formed in 1995 by volunteers working in the Fuengirola Hospice Charity Shop with the objective of raising funds towards the cost of the special palliative care for patients suffering from advanced non-curable cancer or other lifethreatening illnesses, which is provided by the medical personnel at the Hospice Centre in Benalmádena. This is the 18th annual

donation that has been made to Cudeca and brings the cumulative total for the past years to 130,971 euros. This is the 20th anniversary of Cudeca hospice care, and it is particularly significant that the Fuengirola shop has moved to premises with much improved facilities for the volunteers. Everyone in Cudeca send heartfelt thanks to all the Good Companions for their great support and congratulations on the continuing success of the club. For more information about the club and its activities, please contact the president, Tony White on 952 494 730.

The newly formed charity SEARCH – Spanish Equine Association for Rescue, Care and Homing – held a very successful Open Day last weekend at Finca el Sueño in Coin. A host of visitors enjoyed the summer temperatures and sunshine while meeting the horses and enjoying delicious homemade snacks and cakes. Pictured – with young Kaiser who was rescued with his mother as a foal – are organisers Sue and Alan (centre left) with friends and supporters from SEARCH and from The Natural Horsemanship Association of Coin. Sue, who has been involved with horses and charities for many years, has long believed in the natural approach and is keen to share her ideas with other horse owners. She feels that all too often cruelty, which is sadly widespread here in Spain is mainly the result of ignorance resulting in bad feeding and handling. She recently appeared on local television talking about her ideas – follow the links to hear what she has to say: open the website www.mijascomunicacion. org – select 340tv – go to News-and-Views – then to Archives 20-febrero-2012sue-barns. Sue lost her mobile recently (stolen while she was shopping in Coin) and although she now has a new one, with the same number (699 270 930) has also lost all her contact numbers. She would be grateful if all her contacts and friends could get in touch so she can reassemble her address book. The charity's website is under construction, meanwhile anyone who would like to help or is just interested in learning more about SEARCH can contact her on email at searchhorse2012@hotmail. com

… A picturesque Moorish stronghold in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park

W

hite villages and ancient defensive castles are dotted all over Andalucia but the Moorish castle of Zahara de la Sierra is impressive, even to the most experienced traveller. Situated between Ronda and Sevilla and overlooking the long valley below, it was the ideal spot for a fortress built to repel enemy attacks and because of its perfect postion had a long and often chequered history.

eolithic man made his mark here. There are caves dotted around the area as well as artefacts such as axe heads and pottery which were discovered locally. The Romans, too, were active and it is thought that there was a Roman settlement nearby since roof tiles, ceramics and marble have also been unearthed – not surprising considering the once thriving city of Acinipo near Ronda was

relatively close by. (You can drive to Ronda these days in about half and hour.) The Roman culture continued under the Visigoths long after the fall of the empire.

he castle itself is thought to date back to the eight century, around the year 742, though its first definite mention as a frontier fortress was in 1283 when Sultan Yusef Aben of

Morocco and the Castilian king Alfonso X met to discuss an alliance. During the 13th Century it was one of the links in the defensive network of towers and watchtowers marking the border of the Muslim kingdom.

D

uring the 15th century as the Christians and Moors fought for supremacy in Al-Andalus Zahara was continually changing hands and its population subjected to attacks and massacres. The existing tower was rebuilt during this volatile time and by the latter part of the century the village was constantly on a war footing. In 1483 Rodrigo Ponce de Leon conquered Zahara and the Catholic Kings awarded him the title of Marquis de Zahara, as well as property rights. His coat of arms is still that of the town today.

Z

ahara is the last village perched on the most westerly massif on the limestone mountains at the foot of the Sierra del Jaralin in Cadiz province. Its name apparently stems from the Arabic, which means a large rock, though popular belief has linked it to the orange blossom (azahar) on the trees lining its streets. After the Christian conquest it was called Zahara de los Membrillos after the quinces grown locally.

T

oday its warlike past has been forgotten and it is more appreciated for the beauty of its setting. The romantic British traveller Richard Ford, described it as a “Moorish eagle's nest” and you can walk up to the castle remains to see for yourself. There are ruins of the mediaeval village around the Torre del Homenaje and a museum at the base charting its history. But to really share the flavour of the ancient fortress climb the steps to the top of the tower and enjoy the spectacular views of the surrounding area.

T

he views today include the impressive reservoir filling the valley below the town. In earlier times a river flowed through it – once crossed by a Roman bridge – but demand for water resulted in the river being dammed and around ten years ago the valley was flooded to construct a huge lake (it apparently took six years to fill completely). It is a beautiful sight shimmering in the sunshine since the water is so clear – being fed by the mountain streams.

T

he village itself is a typical pueblo blanco, with treelined streets, cafes and bars and two churches – Santa Maria de la Meza which boasts a baroque altarpiece, and the chapel

of San Juan de Letran. There are also miradors all around from which to view the countryside and take photographs.

I

f mountain scenery and views are your thing (provided you aren't worried by heights) then after visiting Zahara drive back via Grazalema. This means crossing the pass called Puerto de las Palomas, an unforgettable drive up winding hairpin bends which seem to go on forever. I'm not sure where the doves were the day we drove up here but there were plenty of birds of prey circling the heights. At the top there is a small car park and several marked walks so you can breath the mountain air before descending through more winding hairpins into the relative peace of Grazalema whose natural park has some wonderful walking and climbing opportunities (one of the gorges is pictured below).

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

is Means War By: McG, Starring: Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Reese Witherspoon Director McG, the man behind Terminator: Salvation and Charlie’s Angels – Full Throttle, is not noted for his delicate touch and subtlety so this rom com crossed with a spy thriller comes out of the traps like a battering ram, if you will excuse the mixed metaphors. FDR (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy) are the world’s deadliest CIA spies – apparently – as well as being bosom buddies. And having successfully worked together to bring down bad guys all around the world they end up back at head

office in LA. There our desk bound heroes find time to mull over the meaning of life, love and that kind of stuff, and hunky Tuck decides that he wants nothing more than to find a woman to love. Luckily for him perky Lauren (Witherspoon) is caught up in her career and doesn’t have time to find the man for her, so her sister takes the matter in hand and places Lauren’s details on a dating site. Tuck spots her and makes contact. Cue for a romance – well, yes. But she accidentally meets FDR,

does not realise the guys are best friends and decides that it would be fun to date both men and compare their attributes. Before you can say boy meets girl the two best friends are employing their CIA skills and hi-tech gadgetry against each other. There’s a lot of bickering, and some lively sabotaging in the all’s fair in love and war battle to win the hand of the fair maiden. It’s an enjoyable if brainless romp, which luckily has the skills of a pretty handy cast to call on to keep things moving along

at a cracking pace. So who wins the day? Watch the movie and take a big bag of popcorn.

have to admit that I had my Irelease doubts about the recent of the remake of “The Woman in Black”, not that the original was that good, but my doubts were regarding Mr. Potter. Having not read the book, it is hard for me to compare versions and say which is closer to it, however when making a comparison, for story and most enjoyable movie, I’d have to say Potter wins it hands down. ven though the story is Eproductions same, the the were quite different – for example, in the original Arthur’s wife is alive and in the remake his wife died during childbirth.

A

lso the town’s people were helpful in the original, but not in the new one – they couldn’t get rid of Arthur quick enough. I know that they seem like small and petty differences, but I think this altered the story of the movie.

A Discovery Worth Making Hazy Malaze formed in 2002 and this soul power trio, with singer guitarist Neal Casal, drummer Dan Fadel and bassist Jeff Hill, released a cracking debut album in 2003. They have released a total of three albums – Hazy Malaze (2003), Blackout Love (2005) and Connections (2009) and have toured throughout the US and Europe. This group brings out something new in Neal's voice, a sour to counter the sweet, a bit more wolf under the sheepskin than many might have expected. Hazy Malaze sound like what might have happened if the Meters had passed the peace pipe with Little Feat's Lowell George. Hazy Malaze provides a rough edged counterpoint to the sensitivity of Casal's solo work, revealing new facets of an artist always on the road

to something new. The first album Hazy Malaze opens with the very Stones-esque “Satisfy the Jones” – it’s a modern classic with some mean guitar work. A bit further in you’ll find “Getaway From You”, which has a ‘60s sound to it and Dan’s drumming reminds you of Keith Moon. The group’s original idea was to be a instrumental band, but in the end they decided against it – however, two instrumental tracks made it on to the debut album. And once you hear this album, you’ll never believe that it was recorded in only seven days. The second album, Blackout Love, is my personal favourite. This album is more polished than the first. The sound is amazing, the second track “Looking Out for You” has to be one of my favourite songs

of all time, it’s bluesy with a raw edge. Casal’s voice is so intense in this song that if you were listening to it on a headset, you’d think he was right behind you, his voice is quite sexy in this little number. Another naughty number is “Thank You In Advance”, but not all the songs on here are sexy and soulful. The boys knock it in gear with some good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll, with “Rock ‘N’ Roll Gone” and “Damage Talking”. There is also a bit of funk in “Bust it Down”, and if you like Golden Earring’s “Radar Love”, you’ll love “Dirty Summer”. After you’ve rocked out, there a few slower numbers that’ll help you get your breath back, “Blackout Love” is an album that should be in everybody’s collection. Hazy’s last album, Connections, seems slightly

nother thing that A bugged me about the original was there wasn’t darker, it’s a bit heavier, but just as good nonetheless. The opening track “Get Free” is insane and fast with quirky lyrics, it sets the theme for the rest of the album. The title track “Connections” has a taste of country to it, but “Josephine” and “On the Tarmac” isn’t countryish at all, it’s more rock. There are some slower songs, but the final song “Scavenger” is great, with a good old fashioned guitar solo. Hazy Malaze is well worth discovering, this band will restore your faith in modern music and remind you what good rock ‘ n’ roll really sounds like. Written by Abigail Tyler

much explanation as to why and what was happening, and the residual haunting scene was rather irritating.

to give you the willies. Hammer, true to it’s famous horror genre, managed to keep the movie spooky with a few jumps thrown in for good measure, which makes a refreshing change to all the blood and gore that modern horror makers think is a prerequisite. adcliffe was the biggest R surprise for me. I didn’t think he’d ever get over being Potter, but I was wrong, the boy doesn’t have to whip out his wand to be memorable. As his character carried the film, there was much on Radcliffe’s shoulders, but he handled the role remarkably well. or those of you who are Fstory, not familiar with the this is what it’s about: Being told by his boss that he has one last chance to prove that he can be a useful solicitor, recently widowed Arthur Kipps is ordered to pay a visit to a town in the north east of England, where the estate of Alice Drablow needs to be sorted. Shortly after arriving to the town, Kipps starts to hear almost all residents plead for him to leave the town at once, and not to go near Drablow's old house.

he remake was rthur decides that he Tspecial surprisingly good, the Ashould pay a visit to effects were neat – Drablow's house, so that he not too much, but enough

can at last sort out all of her financial details and then get as far away from the town as possible!. As Arthur starts to work through the night at the isolated house, he takes a look outside a window, and for a moment sees an image of a ghostlylooking woman dressed in black. f you fancy a fright or are Ishould into ghost stories, this film be right up your alley.

It is the moment to roll up your sleeves and get right down to it; effort is what is required, sheer determination and action to get a job done. It is not about brainstorming or being in touch with the right people anymore it is hard work and muscle that is going to get you ahead now. Put in the man-hours and you will flourish – you are on a countdown to getting some of your dreams to come true, by 10th March you will see the result of your efforts. You will be really reaching for the dream this week which is having a way of expanding your horizons and your sense of all that is possible. There is serious fortitude brewing within you and will peak mid March so prepare well to do something big with the energy that will be bursting forth within you. You are on the brink of future success and recognition, this is when you'll start to see the hard work you've done start to really pay off. This week you could be feeling all out at sea, worrying over things that normally just roll off your back. By the weekend whatever you need to know will become apparent and you will then recognise what to do. An emotional week in the area of your home and you could feel that you are at a crossroads. Later in the week new acquaintances enter your life and bring fresh opportunities, this is just what you need to take your mind off the domestic and family entanglements. Just when you thought you were there, another door opens which is loaded with signs of new adventures and upcoming personal challenges. The big difference this time is that you will have the wealth and resources needed to make the journey. This is more about testing and refining your inner determination. Your career and social standing is on a pathway leading to elevation, run with it for greater prosperity could be just around the corner. After a period of rest you will find yourself filling up with zest and enthusiasm, you can feel that what you are doing now is on the right track and this feeling is giving you energy. Seeds are germinating; life is showing signs of promise once more. This is a great time to go to new places and learn new things, to explore more of what life has to offer. If the outer appearance of things has looked misty, the veil is starting to lift, revealing a new dawn. Relationships are where all the action is and a lot of your energy is directed at readdressing the balance. Changes are coming and will have a knock-on effect to loved ones; therefore, a lot of groundwork has to be covered, to make sure that all concerned are comfortable and willing to assist the journey. By next week your emotions heat up and you become very passionate and sensual towards a special someone. Look after your health this week, be kind to yourself.

Take it one step at a time Libra – you may feel like you have been left in the lurch by someone and may be slightly overwhelmed as to what to do. Make sure that you communicate clearly and let others know what the situation is – you may be surprised at who comes forward to aid you. Once you clear this hurdle your energy September 23rd - will re-emerge allowing you to battle on making bigger strides than ever. Treat yourself to a bit of pampering – you deserve it. October 22nd

October 23rd November 21st

You are so creative right now on all levels. This can be a time when partnerships are formed and two individuals learn to function as one. However, you may be more concerned about your overall health and not want to push yourself beyond your limits. The best thing you can do is slow down and make sure you understand what others are saying before rushing to take action. This energy is great when making changes and improvements to your home-life living conditions.

SAGITTARIUS Others are looking to you for leadership and guidance, you are the one who always

seems to be able to identify the goal, see the bigger picture and inject a bit of enthusiasm into anything. The problem is you don’t want to rush in where angels fear to tread this week; you want to wait but you can’t explain why, it just doesn’t November 22nd - feel the right time to take up the reins and ride. Perhaps worry and fear are weighing December 21st you down – or maybe the timing isn’t quite right, only you know.

CAPRICORN The pace of your life is so fast it is making you dizzy. Making plans to fit everything

in is almost impossible but vital so that you don’t forget or leave something out. You may have to start taking a pen and paper around with you to write things down so that you can remember them. If not you are going to start to lose things and forget December 22nd - appointments. You will need a sense of humour and as long as you can laugh your January 19th way through this time then at least the journey will seem lighter.

PISCES

February 19th March 20th

There are people entering your realm from different walks of life that are spicing things up for you. You have a lot of attention coming your way and at the same time there is a strong theme at the moment to rely upon yourself and become independent. The financial side of your life is also feeling a bit shaky and this is not helping but there are ways to increase wealth at your fingertips. Repairing relationships and restoring them to their former glory is something that you wish to focus on.

Doing things one at a time is the key to getting things done, this means stopping what you are doing should you find yourself being distracted by others and being sure to hear not only what they are saying but also what they mean. This can also mean standing tall when others come to distract you and ask them to come back later when you're in the middle of something. A big factor in this appears to be not allowing yourself to be taken for granted.

the most with me is the friendships and the love and the sheer joy we have shared making movies together. My friends, thank you, all of you, departed and here for this inexplicably wonderful career. Thank you so much. Thank you.” Ms Streep won a supporting actress gong in 1979 and the top award in 1982 for Kramer Vs Kramer and Sophie's Choice respectively, but had lost 12 times in a row since then. The best of the rest went to: Octavia Spencer ("The Help"), Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. Jean Dujardin ("The Artist"), Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.

It’s Milan ‘s turn for their fashion week and the rumours are rife that Britain’s John Galliano’s vacant position at Dior may be taken by Scot Christopher Kane who recently commented that Galliano’s shoes would be a challenge to fill. However, he has grown out of his association with Donatella Versace so we’ll just have to wait and see where he goes next. The week has been full of other surprises though. First came the news that Raf Simons is leaving his position as Creative Director at Jil Sander, with an emotional farewell during his final show last weekend. Then the Yves Saint Laurent stable confirmed that Stefano Pilati will be ending his tenure at the brand, with the possibility of Hedi Slimane taking his place. The never ending fashion merry-go-round just keeps on spinning.

Victoria Wood once said at an award ceremony that the new line of so-called comedy was just not funny anymore and indeed, it seems that “comedians” think that being nasty, spiteful or just downright uncouth is funny. At the Oscars at the weekend Sacha Baron Cohen (he of the yellow Mankini) turned up wearing a military uniform that he claimed was designed by John Galliano posing as General Aladeen, the lead character in his film The Dictator. He was flanked by two female “bodyguards” and was carrying what appeared to be an urn that he claimed contained the ashes of his “friend”, the late North

Korean leader Kim Jong-il. During an interview with US TV host Ryan Seacrest, he told him that he was pleased to be at the awards ceremony as: "It gave me the opportunity to bring my dear friend and doubles tennis partner, Kim Jong-il. It was his dream to come to the Oscars and to be sprinkled over the red carpet and over Halle Berry's chest again." He then faked falling over and tipped the contents of the urn that indeed looked like ash, all over Seacrest’s immaculate Burberry dinner suit and all over the red carpet. The shocked presenter told viewers: “I’m a little dusty. I’m a victim of comedy,”

while the event’s real bodyguards took a rather dimmer view of the stunt and carted Cohen off. Earlier last week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences warned the star of Borat and Bruno against staging any publicity stunts, and it was initially reported that he had been banned. In response, Cohen posted a spoof video online of "General Aladeen" calling the academy's members "zionists". Well, Mr Cohen, seems like it might be time to grow up and become a normal member of society. But I don’t think that’s very likely – what a pathetic idiotic little man he is!

Wake up call about medicine waste

News - Breakthroughs - Treatments - Trends

Bad breath used to create liver cells

Lin-Nam Wang, community pharmacist and senior contributions editor at The Pharmaceutical Journal, has said that half of the £300 millions’ worth of medicines wasted each year is avoidable. She said current strategies to reduce waste were not enough and NHS patients should be told how much their medicines cost.

poll of members of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, 57% thought patients were to blame for medicines’ waste.

She told reporters how a man entered her pharmacy last month and handed her a black bin-bag of medicines worth £2,250. She said they were unusable because she did not know how they had been stored in the patient’s home so they were sent for incineration.

Various strategies have been proposed to prevent waste, including limiting prescribing to 28 days, and since 2006, more than 120 campaigns have been run, asking people to "only order what you need".

According to a recent

Many drugs are 'nonvegetarian'

Ms Wang said this clearly this is not enough and “it's time to talk about the money”. Most people

have no idea how much their medicines cost and human nature is such, she said, that when something is free, people behave more irresponsibly. People who choose not to eat animal products may be unaware that common medicines could contain them, according to researchers at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. Many tablets and liquid medicines use gelatin, derived from animal bones or skin, which helps to hold pills and capsules together or thicken liquids. A survey of 500 patients has shown that a quarter of patients are unknowingly prescribed drugs containing gelatin. Drug companies could adopt an "ingredients" list similar to that found on food packaging, or even use recognised symbols such as those promoted by the Vegetarian Society.

Hydrogen sulphide, the gas that generates the stench in stink bombs, flatulence and bad breath, has been harnessed by researchers in Japan to help convert stem cells from human teeth into liver cells. Small amounts of hydrogen sulphide are made by the body. It is also produced by bacteria and is toxic in large quantities. Researchers at the Nippon Dental University were investigating stem cells from

dental pulp – the bit in the middle of the tooth. They said using the gas increased the proportion of stem cells which were converted to liver cells when used alongside other chemicals. The idea is that liver cells produced from stem cells could be used to repair the organ if it was damaged. One of the problems with dental pulp as a source of stem cells is the amount that can be harvested. The Japanese study did not say how many cells were actually produced.

Jayne Gartell I am writing this email in response to your article in your newspaper this week (February 22nd 2012) in the Opinion corner by Valerie Caldwell. I manage the team who cover the Coin area where Mrs Caldwell lives and decided to change her electricity supplier to our company(Iberdrola). The whole article is totally fiction which you can see by the email I received from Mrs Caldwell. I was notified of her problem and tried to find out what had gone wrong with her bills not arriving (which I might add I’m not sure Endesa would have spent so much time and effort doing as we did,) only to receive the email below – basically admitting she had received her bills as promised but hadn't checked her junk mail, and saying that we had also sent a bill on the required date and it wasn’t our fault as a company that the post office took so long to deliver it.

Coin In your article its states Iberdrola employ people who quote “tell porkies” – which translates to your readers that my team lie to the clients, which it totally untrue. As far as I’m concerned, grave damage has been done to my company and my team who I might add work really hard and are totally honest. I would hope after reading my email and the email from Mrs Caldwell you will take the professional action and publish an apology as the this article will, I’m sure, provoke an adverse reaction from the public which will greatly effect their earnings. I hope you find this email serious enough to reply ASAP. The email Jayne Gartell refers to above from Mrs Caldwell has been sent to us as well and reads: “Hello Jayne...........I have received two bills via email – one in English and one in Spanish, both from different people and

Name supplied Ummm..... well I don’t know if you realise it or not but, the day your quite brilliant newspaper next hits the streets will be February 29th 2012. That means that this year is a leap year. One of the four year cycle. That also means that, according to British tradition, women can propose to their men!

apparently companies, unfortunately both went into my Junk mail. Then low and behold yesterday the original one came in the post – where on earth it’s been to I dont know but the date on it was 7th December – heck I get mail from the UK in three days!!!! This was obviously not Iberdrola’s fault. Lets hope the next one doesn’t take so long. Thanks for your efforts. Val xx Editor says: These letters just go to show how careful one has to be before complaining about companies and/or their services. Mrs Caldwell clearly hadn’t checked her spam box for emails before writing to The News. It is good that Jayne Gartell and her team looked into potential problems that Mrs Caldwell was having and that she and her team took the time and trouble to find out what had actually happened. Well done to them and Iberdrola on this occasion!

My man and I have been together for over 25 years and he has been delaying popping the question for just about the same length of time coming up with all manner of excuses including: can’t afford a wedding (well, yes we can now!), we’re OK as we are (errm, well you might be but I’d like just that teensiest bit more security), the kids would think we’d gone daft (nope, wrong again – I’ve spoken to them and they’d love to see their old mum and dad properly hitched). All in all, I think it’s about time we got on with it so, at around 2pm on Wednesday I will be popping the question, formally, in front of a load of people having lunch on the

seafront! I have booked a table and he thinks it’s just lunch and has no idea that it’s a leap year so, if all your readers see a weird old bloke (he’s in his 50s) running along the paseo screaming his head off, you’ll be able to guess that his answer was a resounding “NO!”. Please don’t print my name in case he sees The News first!! So to all your readers, please keep fingers, toes and anything else you can think of crossed for me! Editor says: Crikey! Good luck with that one! I really hope I won’t be seeing him running past me while I’m out and about.

What’s a Leap Year? You must have noticed today’s date Wednesday February 29th. Most Februarys have only 28 days so why has this one got 29? Of course, it’s a leap year but why do we have leap years?

T

he Earth orbits around the Sun once every year before returning to its start position. We say that there are 365 days in one year but this isn’t quite true; the Earth actually takes 365 days 5 hours 49 minutes and 12 seconds to complete one full orbit, which is very nearly 365 ¼ days.

T

hink of it this way. Imagine that you are looking down onto the Solar System from above with the Sun in the centre and the Earth travelling around it in an anti-clockwise direction. Now lets place the dial of a clock around the Earth with your part of the Earth pointing at the 12 o’clock position directly facing the Sun. The Earth also spins on its axis in an anticlockwise direction so as the day progresses then your point on Earth will begin to mark out the numbers of the clock from 12 through 9 past 6 and 3 and back to 12 again making one whole day.

E

ach time the Earth completes on revolution on its axis it moves a little in its orbit around the Sun. After 365 ¼ days it has made one complete orbit of the Sun and returned to exactly the same point in space that it started from and now your part on Earth is not pointing at the 12 o’clock position it is in fact pointing at the 9 o’clock position. The following year your part of the Earth has progressed another quarter turn so is now pointing to the 6 o’clock position. After 3 years all these quarter turns are beginning to add up and now your part of the Earth is pointing to the 3 o’clock position. After four years have gone by then by the time the Earth returns to the exact point in space where it begins each year then your part of the Earth has taken an extra one whole day or 366 days to return to its starting point.

o compensate for this discrepancy every four years we add an extra day in February that makes that year 366 days long and not the usual 365 days. You may think ‘well what does one day matter really in four years?’ But those days all add up over time and after 40 years the calendar would be 10 days out of sync with the seasons and after 80 years there would be a difference of 20 days.

I

t was Julius Caesar who invented the first really ‘proper’ calendar over 2000 years ago and he made provisions to allow for leap years occurring every four years. But this too was slightly wrong as the Earth takes almost 11 minutes less than 365 ¼ days to make one orbit of the Sun. And so by the year 1582 the Julian Calendar was also out of sync by about 10 days. So Pope Gregory XIII employed a mathematician and astronomer to reorganise the calendar to take into account the missing days. And so Thursday 4th October 1582 was followed by Friday 15th October 1582 and the Gregorian calendar that we still use today was implemented.

T

he Gregorian calendar states that every four years there would be a leap year but years that are divisible by 100 would only be leap years if they were also divisible by 400 as well. So, in the last millennium, 1600 and 2000 were leap years, but 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not. In this millennium, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2500, 2600, 2700, 2900, and 3000, will not be leap years, but 2400, and 2800 will be.

I

t has been a tradition ever since the 13th century that a woman may propose marriage to a man only during leap years. Refusal by the man to marry the woman required that fines be levied against the man; compensation ranged from a kiss to a silk gown, in order to soften the blow. Gentlemen, you have been warned!

Motors Private MotoGP test session A private MotoGP test session was held at Jerez this week, attended by four of the new Claiming Rule Teams (CRTs) as well as the Ducati Test Team, which invited satellite race riders Karel Abraham (day two) and Hector Barbera (day three) to ride alongside Franco Battaini. There was no official timing at the test. These times are as provided by the teams and compiled by the official MotoGP website. The next official MotoGP test takes place at Sepang next week, but the full 2012 MotoGP line-up will not be on track together until the final official test at Jerez from March 23rd-25th. 1. Moto2 World Championship runner-up Marc Marquez (above) has revealed there is a 'small chance' he could miss the opening round of 2012. The Repsol Suter star, who won seven races during his rookie campaign, has not ridden a Moto2 bike since suffering eye problems following a practice fall on an unmarked section of wet track at the penultimate 2011 round in Malaysia. Marquez subsequently underwent surgery to cure double vision problems and, although back on a motocross bike, has now missed two of the three 2012 pre-season tests. With the season-opening round race in Qatar on April 8th, Marquez added: "There is a small chance of not going... It's an injury that needs time, a nerve is not like a bone."

Topless Range Rover Evoque The world's first soft-top Range Rover has been unveiled – allowing wind in the hair motoring for drivers both on and off road. The cabriolet version of the 'baby' 4X4 Range Rover Evoque is expected to cost between £35,000 and £50,000 – depending on trim level – when it hits showrooms within two years. Details are revealed ahead of its official unveiling at next month's Geneva Motor Show where it is expected to be one of the stars.

Mercs new C-Class Coupe Hot on the heels of the refreshed 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan, the company has taken the wraps off the latest addition to the C-class line, this sharply styled coupe. Merc's new two-door four-seater debuts at the Geneva auto show. Unsurprisingly, the C coupe's snout looks rather like the new nose on the Cclass sedan, although the fascia has been slightly tweaked. The C coupe's side profile is definitely going to provoke reactions; some will say it's characteristic of modern Mercedes-Benzes, featuring a strong rising beltline and a kink at the Cpillar. Others may say it looks like a Honda Accord coupe, a comparison the Mercedes styling team would no doubt be upset to hear. All C coupes will come standard with 17-inch wheels, the design of which will depend on the trim level, and all will feature chrome-tipped dual exhaust tips. Indoors, the C-class coupe is much the same as its four-door sibling. The dash is significantly better than the pre-facelift C-class

sedan’s, featuring higherquality materials and a

more stylish layout. Buyers of the C250 will find their interiors trimmed with aluminum, while C350 coupe owners are treated to walnut wood, and can upgrade to snazzy matte-finished ash wood. The C-class coupe is crammed with standard features, many of which are

expensive options on the C-class sedan. They include a

panoramic sunroof, sport seats, Bluetooth, a 5.8-inch multimedia display, LED daytime running lights, nine airbags (including dual front pelvic airbags), and Benz's Attention Assist system. The C-class coupe also will include Merc's newest-generation

COMAND infotainment interface, should buyers stump up to buy the navigation system. With all of these toys included, the C-class coupes should have base prices somewhat higher than an equivalent sedan’s when they go on sale in September. Still, given the new C’s features and its handsome looks, dealers should have no trouble filling their order books, so long as customers don't end up leasing two-door Accords by accident!

Five goal Malaga crush Costa del Sol CC vs Zaragoza Mijas CC at the Oval Malaga 5 - 1 Real Zaragoza After another weekend of away day blues in Bilbao last weekend, Malaga came back to fortress Rosaleda to take on bottom of La Liga Zaragoza. Malaga’s midfield maestro "Isco" & Real’s Paulo da Silva

Malaga were soon on top with Seba having the best early chance with Roberto saving for Zaragoza, and although the visitors looked lively going forward it was still a surprise when they went in front, Lafitta's cross was swept in by ex- Malaga player Aranda on 23 minutes. Roberto saved well again from Seba but just before the half time whistle Malaga made the important

breakthrough, an Isco cross was met by the ever dangerous Seba who headed home from close range. The second half began with Malaga now in full control of the game and looking to add to their goal tally. Isco on the right crossed hard and low for the unfortunate Da Silva to deflect the ball into his own

net on 67minutes. Ten minutes later a Joaquin cross was brilliantly headed home at the far post by Demechelis, Isco then got on the score sheet two minutes later slotting home and Rondon rounded off the rout with two minutes left on the clock. This result takes Malaga back into a European spot. Report by Scott Forbes

What a beautiful spring day at the Cartama oval it was for a game of cricket between these two local rivals. Mijas CC won the toss and elected to bat first, with Dave and Matt opening they quickly put up a decent score and were well on their way to a 100 run partnership before Matt was bowled out with the score on 92 after making a fine half century. Dave soldiered on for a few more overs to make his 50 but also succumbed to a subdued but consistent bowling attack by CDSCC’s off-spinner Jody who eventually got his first 5 wicket haul and, with the help of Azam, Rob and

No washout for this year’s Belplaya Bowls Tournament! Fine weather, rather than the heavy rain of the previous two years, blessed this year’s annual competition. Those bowlers playing at the beginning of the week in the early morning sunshine had to wrap up against the cold, particularly the chill wind. Without the rain, the resolute bowlers from the Costa del Sol bowls clubs wrapped up and concentrated on playing their matches to the expected high standard. The Mixed Triples “Plate” final, played on a warmer Saturday morning, was an excellent display of team bowling that needed an extra end for the Lauro team of Trevor and Pam Burgin with Terry Morgan, to win nineteen-eighteen over the Mijas team of Terry and Maureen Barrett with Brian Lancaster. The warm Saturday

took Bill Gregory and Norma Ewen 3 ends to catch up, only to fall behind again by 5 shots on the fourteenth end. On 17 shots, Brian and Mary failed to score again and 8 shots over the last 4 ends gave a surprising victory to Bill and Norma by 20-17.

Garry Aldridge, with Margaret & Gorden Kain of Santa Maria

afternoon finals attracted a good number of spectators who enjoyed the display of top-class bowling. The Pairs “Plate” saw the Mijas team, Terry and Maureen Barrett trail by 19 to 10 shots after 13 ends to eventually lose 21-19 to the Benalmadena team of Greg Ellwood and Marion Allen. The favourites for the Pairs Title, Brian Todd and Mary Detheridge fell behind

to start with but were 4 in front by the eighth end and it

After the twelfth end of the Triples Final, the defending Champions from Santa Maria Garry Aldridge, Margaret and Gordon Kain had a ten shot lead. The Lauro team of Claire Dye, Tony Barnes and skipped by Norman Holmes, then began the fight-back but just ran out of ends, having won the last four of the match only to lose by two shots with the score 19-17. Report by Charles Ottaway – Captain of Belplaya Bowls Club

Bill Gregory & Norma Ewen

Craig’s never-in-doubt catches, went on to take a career best of 6 wickets for 25 runs in his 7 overs. The rest of the bowlers kept it tight and restricted the run rate and it was up to the captain Tony to take 2 more wickets and assist in a run out to take the last wicket. Mijas CC all out for 153. With only 154 needed to win the match CDSCC felt confident and it showed in the opening pair with Rob and Morly cruising to 45 before Morly fell to Roger’s pace attack on 36 runs after a flurry of boundaries. Rob fell soon afterwards on 25, clean bowled by Matt who read his premeditated shot and adjusted well, and it was up to the captain with Imti at the other end freeing his arms and smashing some really spectacular sixes before he

was caught in fine style by Kevin on 33. Then the boat began to wobble and the next 3 wickets fell in quick succession with Roger and Matt taking 3 wickets apiece. With doubt in the batting side’s hearts and hope in the bowling sides’, up to the crease came Azam. After his inspiring performance in the field, he steadied the nerves and played a very sensible innings to eventually make the winning runs by sending the ball back over the bowler’s head for 4 with 4 overs to spare. Spanish climber,73, has sights set on world's top peaks Age has never been an obstacle for Carlos Soria, a Spanish mountain climber. When he turned 11, he left school to become a bookbinder, then switched a few years later to tapestry in a workshop owned by his uncle. Now 73 and retired, he is on course to become the oldest man to ascend the 14 mountains in the world of more than 8,000 metres (26,250 feet) having already reached the summit of 10. In early March, he is leaving his village of Moralzarzal, 50 kilometres outside Madrid, for Nepal, where he will climb in the Annapurna section of the

Himalayas. If he can stick to his schedule, Soria will complete the 14-mountain circuit next spring. He has, however, said his goal had never been to set records. Instead, he wants to help rewrite the guidelines for what older people should aim for.

McIlroy runs out of steam American Hunter Mahan used the talk of Rory McIlroy's assumed ascension to world No.1 as the motivation to prove everyone wrong in the final of the WGC Match Play Championship in Arizona on Sunday. Underdog Mahan did so with a convincing 2 and 1 victory over the 22-

what everybody was talking about. "I didn't think about it when I was on the course but there was absolute motivation in that." Mahan also admitted there was extra incentive to win his second WGC event, having won the 2010 Bridgestone Invitational.

year-old Northern Irish phenomenon. Had McIlroy prevailed in the final he would have overtaken England's Luke Donald as the world's top-ranked golfer, but while everyone prepared for the crowning, Mahan instead grabbed a fourth career win and moved to a career-high ranking of No.9. He had clearly been the best over the week, notching up 35 birdies in 96 holes. "I'd be lying to you if there wasn't (motivation from the No.1 talk)," Mahan said."There really was. Deep down you wanted to postpone that crowning of the No.1 player in the world . "When I listened to (commentators) Johnny Miller and Nick Faldo and all those guys, they had him picked to win. There was no doubt about it. And that's

McIlroy wasn't looking to make excuses but the youngster did admit the emotional toll of his big semi-final against Lee Westwood in the morning may have hit him hard. "I said the difficult thing would be to get myself up again for this afternoon," Rory Tweeted later... “Just want to say a BIG thank you to all my followers and fans! Your support doesn't go unnoticed!”

England hold their nerve to win series England claimed a dramatic five-run win over Pakistan in the third Twenty20 international to take the series 2-1.On a slow Abu Dhabi pitch, the tourists were indebted to Kevin Pietersen, as they struggled with Saeed Ajmal's magical display, which picked up 4-23. Wales secure Triple Crown Wales certainly like to leave their fans waiting for victory, three weeks ago a last-gasp Leigh Halfpenny penalty secured victory over Ireland in Dublin and on Saturday, with Twickenham urging England forward at 12-12 with just five minutes to go, replacement centre Scott Williams ripped the ball from Courtney Lawes on the halfway line, kicked ahead and was blessed with the most favourable of bounces, and held on to the ball to score the only try of the match and seal a 19-12 win. Wales have Italy at home next and, if they win that one, as they should, will face France in a potential championship and possibly grand slam decider on the final day of the championship on March 17th. Saturday's victory was only their second in 14 attempts at Twickenham over a period of 22 years – albeit against an inexperienced England showed team who encouraging signs of progress – and it was a massively important one. Wales dominated in the early stages but could not turn it into points and found themselves trailing midway through the second half. England's

Mark Cavendish wins his 1st classic of the season Team Sky's Mark Cavendish overcame illness to sprint to victory in the 195km KuurneBrussels-Kuurne one-day race in Belgium on Sunday. Britain's world road race champion was perfectly delivered to within 250m of the line by team-mate Chris Sutton before sprinting away from the field. "When I got to the final corner, I knew we'd win," said Cavendish who also won two stages in February's Tour of Qatar. "I was ill all day and kept vomiting," the 26-year-old added. "But they controlled it at the end to deliver me and with 250m to go I kicked and that was it."

It follows a year when Parker featured in seven of England's nine games, having not been selected for most of former manager Fabio Capello's tenure. The 31-year-old is second favourite after Steven Gerrard to become captain. Parker said: "I don't think I ever lost hope that I could make it at international level. I crammed a lot in in one year. August friendlies face the axe

Premier League bosses were rejoicing across the country on Tuesday morning after it emerged that FIFA are set to axe international friendlies played in August. The detested window has long riled managers who have lost players from their plans just days before or after the start of the new season – particularly with the added anxiety of injuries. But Europe's major clubs and governing body UEFA have agreed to drop the games from the international calendar, European Clubs Association chairman KarlHeinz Rummenigge revealed on Tuesday.
