In debt? Then why not try growing cannabis? The small rural community of Rasquera (pop. 900) in Catalonia found itself at the centre of intense media scrutiny last week and re-opened the debate on the legalisation of cannabis when its town council announced a plan to cede land for the cultivation of the controversial weed.
Economic Councillor Josep Maria Insausti told reporters that the idea is to create a public company through which landowners will be able to rent their

Most of the villagers voted in favour of the scheme at a public meeting (above right) but some fear that the village could become a kind of Amsterdam. Bernard Farnós, one of the three town councillors belonging
to the Convergence and Union party – which controls the Catalan regional government – said:

WORLD PM urges banks ICKHAM’S
Good neighbours
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
If you read the letter on last week’s Opinion and Comments page from the lady (who still wishes to remain anonymous) who was about to ask her man of many years to marry her, you’ll be pleased to know that the answer was “Yes” and they are now planning to tie the knot in the autumn in the uK. Just thought you’d like to know! I would like to say a huge “well done” to my neighbour, Bev. Some of you will have read in the last issue’s Community news pages about the number of burglaries that had been carried out in certain areas. Well, our area just before Christmas had ten in a week so we’re all keeping our eyes open (as are the Guardia Civil). Anyway, last Thursday we got a call in the office from Bev saying that three ladies in a black car had been down our track asking where my house was and that she wanted to see the place because she had sold it to me. Well, the lady that sold me the house some 16 years ago can’t drive so I was out of the office like a shot to find out what was going on. Bev, bless her, had parked her big four-wheel-drive right across the camino so they couldn’t get out again. To cut a long story short, we found the car and indeed it turned out that it was Violet who had sold me the house with two friends but, things could have been very different if they had been “casing the joint” so here’s to great neighbours. Way to go Bev! Thanks!
to lend money Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy urged banks not to refuse loans to feasible projects proposed by small and medium-sized companies or solvent families, during his closing speech at a financial meeting on Tuesday. He said providing credit in these cases would

One local said: “It's more likely to be just another tourist attraction, like eating the local food." Spain to miss 2012 budget deficit target Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced last Friday that Spain will miss its budget deficit target for this year, just as EU leaders agree a new treaty to enforce budget discipline. Mr Rajoy said Spain's deficit would be 5.8% of total economic output in 2012, higher than its agreed target of 4.4%. He said the higher target still represented "significant austerity".
the Stability and Growth Pact. Other reports indicate that German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have said they understand Rajoy's predicament.
Rajoy’s announcement took European leaders aback but he received words of support on Monday from European Commission President José Manuel Durão Barroso, who said he had “no doubts” that Spain would comply with the terms of
Meanwhile, on Monday Rajoy ruled out the idea of giving regional governments some leeway on their contribution to reducing the shortfall in the state’s finances.
Trafico opts for humour The Traffic Authority intends to take a humorous approach to road safety from now on. Gone are the days of blood and gore splashed across TV screens as Trafico campaign spots tried to terrify people into being safer drivers. Comedian Leo Harlem has filmed three spots, one of which is airing this week to support Trafico's campaign about the dangers of using mobile phones while driving. In it, he walks along the street, twittering all his friends to complain about how drivers allow themselves to be distracted by their mobile phones. In another, he says people “use their GPS to pop down to the bakery to buy bread”, and comments that some people are so addicted to GPS that “they use it to put out the rubbish”. Last year, distractions caused 566 accidents which killed 606 people and injured 556. It remains to be seen if humour rather than fear will make people drive more carefully.

services such as health and education. However, after a meeting on Monday with the secretary general of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and

Socialists fomenting Told to 'Kill as “climate of conflict” many as you can' Partido Popular (PP) organisational secretary Carlos Floriano accused the opposition Socialists last week of being behind the wave of student protests that rocked Barcelona and other cities earlier in the week. Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón said the Socialists are “creating a climate of social conflict” to challenge the government’s reforms. On the same day, Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón questioned why television networks kept showing images of the police confrontations and riots in the Catalan capital. He said: “The images have

really hurt us and probably have cost us lots of jobs and lots of investment opportunities.” Socialist leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba said he deplored the violence, which he blamed on radical anti-system groups,
but insisted that his party would continue to support legitimate protests. He said: “The PP always turned out to march during Church-inspired protests, we will turn out for the workers and students.”
New habits in times of crisis People are eating less fresh fish but drinking more beer and wine, according to the latest survey by the Centre of Sociological Research (CIS). They are also mending clothes and shoes instead of buying new ones, as they did in happier
economic times. The crisis has also forced 70 per cent of families to cut back spending on recreational pursuits followed by reductions in the consumption of gas, water and electricity (69.8 per cent).
Two thirds of the people questioned also said they intended to cut back on their summer holidays. However, families do not appear to be cutting back spending on health, dental treatment, food and transport.

Repentant ETA terrorist Iñaki Rekarte admitted on a programme broadcast on TV3 last week that “the order was to kill as many people as we could”. Rekarte, who has spent the past 23 years in jail on several counts of murder, appeared together with Iñaki García Arrizabalaga, the son of José Manuel García Cordero, who was assassinated by ETA in October 1980. García Arrizabalaga, who has had face-to-face conversations with several jailed ETA terrorists said one had confessed that being in jail was a “form of liberation, a way of escaping pressure to kill from the ETA chiefs”. man also said he and his fellow terrorists “could not look their victims in the eyes”. Rekarte has never met any of the relatives of his victims but he did meet the widow of another ETA victim. He said: “They
come without hate, and that shatters you.” The two men participate in meetings between victims and repentant ETA prisoners organised by the Penitentiary Institutions and the Basque government's Office of Victims.
Civil War Victims’ office is now closed The government has closed the Office of Victims of the Civil War and the Dictatorship, created by the Socialist government in December 2008. Its functions will now be handled by the Justice Ministry's general rights department. Its achievements include a road map of the 2,246 mass graves located so far – more than half of them in Andalucia and Aragon. On hearing the news, Gaspar Llamazares, who was leader of the Izquierda Unida (IU, Izquierda
Unida) when it pushed the Historical Memory Law through Parliament, said Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon had the “sensitivity of a clam”. The president of the Association for the
Recovery of the Historical Memory, Emilio Silva, said the decision to close the “only door” in the government for the victims of the Franco regime was “very sad”.

Pessimism on the economy persists Three months after the general election, Spaniards are no less pessimistic about the state of the nation, with 96 per cent seeing things as downright dismal on the financial front, according to a Metroscopia opinion poll, carried out for el PaÍS on February 29th and March 1st. Prime Minister Mariano rajoy has lost a few points in popularity because of his labour reforms but the poll showed that his party, the Partido Popular, would still win if another election were held now. Time short to stop Iran Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu told a pro-Israel conference in the US on Monday that time is running out to put a stop a a stop to Iran's nuclear programme. Russia’s election 'clearly skewed' Sunday's presidential elections were "clearly skewed" to favour Vladimir Putin, monitors with the Organisation for Security and Co-operation (OSCE) said on Monday. Preliminary results showed that Mr Putin, who is currently prime minister, won more than 63% of votes. The organisation said it had received more than 3,000
reports of voting fraud, and has put Mr Putin's count at just over 50% – far less than the official figure given by the election commission. The election was held against a backdrop of popular discontent, sparked by allegations of widespread fraud during December's parliamentary elections in favour of Mr
Putin's United Russia party. During anti-Putin protests in Moscow on Monday, police arrested protest leaders Alexei Navalny and Sergei Udaltsov after Mr Navalny told a crowd of protesters that "swindlers and thieves" ruled Russia. They were just two of some 550 people arrested in Moscow and St Petersburg on a day of rallies for and against Mr Putin.
Trial of former Iceland PM begins The trial of former Icelandic Prime Minister Geir Haarde began in Reykjavik in Monday. He faces charges of negligence over the 2008 financial crisis when the country's three main banks collapsed and the failure of Icesave hit thousands. When Icesave collapsed, the then UK Prime Minster Gordon Brown accused Mr
Haarde of "unacceptable" and "illegal" behaviour after Iceland said it could not give a guarantee to reimburse UK customers of the online bank. In response, Mr Haarde accused the UK government of "bullying" and bringing down one of its other banks after the Treasury froze the assets of Icelandic institutions in the UK. The dispute over
compensation between the two countries remains unresolved. Mr Haarde is thought to be the first world leader to face criminal charges over the crisis. He rejects the charges as "political persecution" and has said he will be vindicated during the trial.

It’s the way he told them Ship report leaked Irish comedian Frank Carson was laid to rest on Saturday with a huge red floral tribute in the shape of a Christmas cracker accompanying his coffin in the hearse. One of Carson’s catchphrases was “It’s a cracker!” and the whole funeral was one of huge respect for the greatly admired and loved Irishman who had been bestowed with the Knight of St. Gregory Award by the Pope for his charity works. The service took place in the church where the 85-year-old had married his wife, Ruth, 62 years ago. His friend and former Bishop of Derry, Edward Daly described him as “The Prime Minister of fun”, adding that he had
lived life “generously”. Mourners inside the church included comedians Stan Boardman, Lenny Henry and Roy Walker who later described Frank Carson as a lovely man who always made people laugh, adding that he had a real gift. Also at the service were goalkeeper Pat Jennings, boxer Barry
McGuigan, snooker player Dennis Taylor, Northern Ireland deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and Irish singer Dana. He leaves three children, ten grandchildren and a greatgrandchild.
Last week part of a report on the Costa Concordia disaster on January 12th off the Tuscan coast – in which over 30 people died and seven are still missing – revealed that the Captain of the ship, 52-year-old Francesco Schettino (pictured below) was not wearing his glasses – which the report adds he needed when tired – and needed help reading the radar screens according to his first officer, Ciro Ambrosio who was being questioned at the inquiry. Ambrosio is also under investigation and a pre-trial hearing started on Saturday in the town of Grosetto.

She said ”talks today have been positive but we have more to do to get assurances that will allow us to legally deport Abu Qatada”. First search finds nothing An initial visual search of the site of the police fatal shooting in Cheshire “has not revealed any weapon”. According to the IPCC two rounds had been fired from different police firearms during the incident on Saturday night one of which killed 36-yearold Anthony Paul Grainger, from Bolton, who was in the driver’s seat of a red Audi car, with a single gunshot wound to the chest. Mr Grainger was shot by an armed officer. The vehicle was stopped on Saturday evening in what police described as a "pre-planned operation". It is thought that the operation was following up a robbery that took place three weeks ago. A statement has been taken from the police officer who fired the fatal bullet. However, a full ballistic examination needs to be undertaken on the recovered police weapons to confirm this. At this stage it is known that one round was
discharged by an officer carrying a Heckler and Koch MP5 carbine. Two Hatton rounds were discharged into the car's tyres by an officer carrying a shotgun in order to disable the vehicle. A CS canister was also deployed by hand into the vehicle by one of the firearms team. An IPCC spokesman said: "Due to the presence of CS residue in the car, a full forensic examination has not yet been conducted to establish whether there are any weapons in the car. This will take place in a controlled environment in the next few days. Investigators have identified some witnesses to events but I would urge anyone who has information about the incident to come forward to assist our investigation." She added: "This is an independent investigation and we will examine thoroughly the whole incident and report our findings in due course."

Great news for Sunderland Our man abroad
Two thousand jobs are being promised at the Nissan plant at Sunderland in the North East of England as Nissan gears up to build a new compact car called the “Invitation”. The car will be produced from the middle of next year with the help of a £9.3m government grant that is part of the Regional Growth Fund. Senior Vice President of the plant, Trevor Mann, said that it was “absolutely news for fantastic Sunderland” where many had been fearing for their jobs. At the moment, the plant builds the Nissan Note and Juke but they will
be phased out from the Sunderland plant. A meeting was held on Tuesday morning where all the staff were told the good news that their site had won over those in India, Mexico and other sites in Europe. Mr. Mann said: "We put our case to the government and the government supported us with £9m." Shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna described the announcement as "excellent news" but added that this was only "a small example of government working with industry. What this highlights is the
need for this government to adopt a much more aggressive industrial strategy to help support the different sectors of our economy,” she said and called for more cooperation, particularly through the Regional Growth Fund. However, Business secretary Vince Cable was celebrating the news at the Geneva Motor Show saying: "Britain is booming in terms of the overall automotive industry." Nissan's Sunderland factory is already the country's biggest producer of cars with 480,485 vehicles built last year, a UK record.
Prince Harry represented the United Kingdom on a visit to Belize over the weekend but in the welcoming ceremony Sky News pointed out that he had turned away before realising the mistake he had made in forgetting to take the Royal Salute. He quickly turned back and nodded an appreciation to the soldier performing the duty but, of course by then he was already on camera. Sky News said that his grandmother is a “master” at such things. Come on guys, give poor Harry a break. This is the first official solo tour he’s done and his grandmother – though by no means would we contradict that she is, of course, excellent at such things – has been doing them for 60 years. Leave the boy alone. He does great works for charity and, as we saw in the film footage of him dancing with some of the ladies of Belize, is an absolute winner with the public. There were 2000 onlookers on his first evening there – mark our words: the boy will go far and will be a great asset to the country. Yes, he’s going to make mistakes – but how many 27-year-olds do you know that could have done nearly as well?.

The Prince arrived in Jamaica on Monday night and carried out his duties perfectly this time. He is there for what is to be a fun-filled visit but there will be one or two engagements – including a confrontation with Useine Bolt. There was even talk of a race between the two. This part of the tour is to mark the Queen’s Jubilee and the 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence from Britain. One or two diplomatically sensitive incidents are possible but it has been made clear by Britain that Harry is not to be involved in the island’s move to becoming a republic. Harry took the Royal Salute and carried on making an inspection of troops from the Jamaican Defence Force. Harry is also expected to meet children of the island.
President to go soon The British ambassador to Syria has told Sky News he expects President Bashar al Assad will be out of power within a year. Speaking on television for the first time since he was recalled from Damascus last week, Simon Collis said: "The use of force, the use of violence has made it impossible to reach a political solution. He has only got a limited number of troops that he can rely on to shoot their own citizens. A lot of the army is confined to barracks, the conscripts and so on. The economy is grinding to a halt. People don't have jobs, they don't have hope, they don't have a future while this continues." Mr Collis and his staff were withdrawn from Syria because of the deteriorating security situation in the country. An estimated 7,000 people have been killed since the government began a bloody crackdown on an 11-month uprising by opponents of the regime, according to the UN. The ambassador spoke as Prime Minister David Cameron told MPs on the Commons Liaison Committee that the only option in Syria is for Mr Assad to leave power. "What is the best path to end the violence in Syria?" he said. "A transition at the top of that regime with Assad going. Having him stay is a cause of instability." The UN, EU and France had all called on Moscow to change its opposition to taking sides in the conflict after Putin had been declared the winner.

Dangerous breeds in More checks at La Linea border crossing the spotlight There were tense scenes on the Spanish side of the border last week as the Guardia Civil cracked down on smuggling.
An incident involving a pit bull and two children aged five and six put the issue of dangerous breeds back in the spotlight last week. Fortunately, the children only received minor bites from a breed that is second on the list of the 8,658 dangerous dogs registered in Malaga province – where there are 2,275 pit bulls. The Rottweiler is top dog
on the list drawn up by the Veterinarians' College, with 3,535, registered. Of the once most popular Doberman (right) there are only 743 in the province today. However, a College spokesman said its list only gives an idea of how many dangerous dogs there are because “irresponsible
owners don't register them, especially if they're to be used in illegal dog fights”.
Rental car companies optimistic They were stopping every sixth vehicle during the evening rush hour while dozens of angry people argued with them, saying the checks were excessive. However, the fruits of their searches were parked to one side – dozens of cars
and motorbikes they had seized after they were found stuffed full of contraband cigarettes. The Spanish authorities have said smuggling is defintely increasing as unemployment rises in the Campo de Gibraltar. Tobacco in Gibraltar costs
nearly half of the price in Spain and organised gangs have not been slow to get in on the act. But for those people who are now supplementing their unemployment benefits by smuggling small amounts of cigarettes, the Guardia's closer scrutiny couldn't have come at a worse time.

Street drinking fines rise Fines for drinking in the street rose drastically in Estepona last year – up from 30 in 2010 to 149. Councillor Ana Velasco attributed the rise to the “efficient and exemplary” work done by the Local Police to guarantee public order and raise civic awareness. She said there had been similar rises in fines issued to street vendors, owners of dangerous dogs and causing a public nuisance.

Rent-a-car companies are currently negotiating the purchase of a total of around 15,000 vehicles, determined not to be caught by a shortage of cars as they were in the summer of 2009. In the good years, most rental car companies bought between 9,000 and 10,000 new vehicles but
that all changed after the economic crisis begin to dig in. A spokesman for the Association of Rental Car Companies said this year's total of 15.000 might look small in comparison but when compared with the number of cars bought in
2010 and 2011, it showed that the companies were expecting a better summer this year.

he most worrying thing about the scandal in which Royal son-in-law Iñaki Urdangarin is currently floundering is the way it will be used by a small but very vocal minority whose stated aim is to abolish the monarchy and initiate the Third Republic. Very few people know much about the First Republic while the Second Republic has been portrayed as heaven-on-earth since the Socialists took over in 2004. However, the fate of both is a powerful argument against the creation of a third. he First Republic came into being on February 11th, 1873, the day after the abdication of Amadeo I, an Italian prince who had been offered the Spanish throne after Isabel II was forced into exile by her unruly subjects. The political situation had been turbulent, to say the least, for several decades and the First Republic was to be even more unstable. Between February 1873 and December 1874, four Presidents followed one another in quick succession and three civil wars were being waged in different parts of the country. General Arsenio MartinezCampos put an end to all this on December 29th and began to pave the way for the return of Isabel’s son, Alfonso XII. To give an idea of just how turbulent the 19th century was in Spain, there were nearly 160 military pronunciamientos, or 1.6 for every year.
T
he political situation did not improve in the 20th century – revolution was in the air all over Europe and especially in Spain. The largely benign dictator General Primo de Rivera (1923-1930) kept the lid on the situation until the military stopped backing him because he tried to modernise the army. Alfonso XIII found he couldn't cope and le ft the country after the elections in April 1931 made it clear that his subjects didn’t love him.
D
uring the Second Republic, there were three different governments – the reformist one which lasted until the elections in late 1933, which brought in a right-wing government that lasted until the February 1936 election was won by the revolutionary Popular Front. By the spring of 1936, political assassinations, church burnings, riots and strikes were daily events – until the military stepped in on July 18th to plunge the country into the civil war to end all civil wars.
ranco had promised to restore the monarchy, which he finally did in 1969, when he announced that the then Prince Juan Carlos was to succeed him. Juan Carlos had left his family in exile in Portugal to come to Spain at the age of ten in 1948 so that Franco could educate him to become his worthy successor. As a result, Franco thought he was leaving Spain to an authoritarian monarch who would continue his regime, but Juan Carlos had other plans. etween Franco’s death on November 20th 1975 and the first free post-dictatorship election on June 15th 1977, Juan Carlos and the man he appointed as prime minister, Adolfo Suarez, dismantled the Franco regime during the period known as the Transition. Many people had feared that Spain would plunge into civil war once Franco was gone but fortunately for the Spanish a very democratically-minded king stepped into the vacuum – one who told historian Paul Preston that he would like to be a “Republican king”.
ariano Rajoy has been very cagey with Brussels over the last few weeks. But things came to a head when he announced that he was defying the European Commission’s set goal for Spain to reduce its deficit by 4.4 percent this year. Fearing an avalanche of social unrest if he makes many more drastic cuts, the Popular Party (PP) leader instead told EC commissioners that Spain would set it own goal at 5.8 percent. Rajoy explained that it makes no sense to make some €44 billion in cuts to meet the 4.4 percent target when Spain is on the verge of a recession. His change of mind immediately evoked waves of criticism by other EU leaders. Swedish Prime Minister Fredrick Reinfeldt said one of the important things about introducing new rules on budget stability is not having to immediately relax them. Rajoy is showing his true colours; though he is proEuropean he also wants Europe to understand that there are countries that need special help.
B
ut getting back to that son-in-law. In its editorial on Sunday, El Pais recalled how King Juan Carlos received a standing ovation when he went to open Parliament on December 27th last year, two weeks after the Urdangarin scandal hit the headlines. It also recalled how the King had pointedly noted during his Christmas address that all people are equal before the law. Meanwhile, Urdangarin was relieved of all Royal duties for “not having acted in an exemplary way”. The fact that a notoriously pro-Socialist newspaper chose to weigh in heavily on the side of King Juan Carlos and the monarchy indicates that the polls which consistently show that some three quarters of the Spanish people are happy with their King have got it just about right. Around 12-13 per cent profess to be Republicans while the rest are indifferent.
U
rdangarin has yet to be found guilty or not of salting away large chunks of the millions he received through his non-profit making Noos Institute from the Valencia and Balearic Islands regional governments, but from what we’ve seen so far things aren’t looking too good for him. I doubt if he’ll go to jail but I suspect we’ll never see him in the company of the Royal family ever again – at least in public.
Congress later this month. The predecessor Socialist government decided to leave that task for the incoming government because it would be the one administering Spain’s finances for the next several years. Brussels has been on Rajoy’s back demanding that he and his economic team give them an estimated figure to get a better grip where Spain’s real monetary problems lie. But the EC commissioners have not given any type of inkling to Rajoy – much less to the leaders of Greece and Italy – over whether they will come up with a job stimulus package for the troubled nations.
W
ith unemployment likely to hit the 24 per cent mark later this year, Spain cannot go it alone and create jobs. It needs a financial stimulus in terms of credits, grants and other aid from Brussels to ensure that there is a wider plan to put the jobless back to work. Europe needs to spend more money on public work projects through the member nations and offer the jobless opportunities to create their own businesses and stimulate existing companies. This is one aspect that the EC has refused to budge on. There is no union in Europe today; just a disarray of countries led by a few who believe all the smaller members can stomach the same economic formula. It is time for Brussels to start doing its part and stop policing nations.
Getting even
T M
ost of Spanish debt comes from the runaway spending in the regions. In order to make the estimated €37.8 billion in revenue to meet the 5.8 percent target goal, Spain’s 17 regions will have to fork out some €13.9 billion – a lot of money considering that many local governments have already made deep cuts in health and education spending. The PP regional barons told Rajoy last week there is no room for more cuts but the prime minister said they would have to make “a significant effort.”
A
ll eyes will be on the Cabinet this week as it prepares the final 2012 budget figure to be presented in
he PP government took no time in getting some revenge on those the party believed should pay a price for all the distress and embarrassment caused over the last eight years. In a quiet behind-the-scenes move, government officials have got rid of all the anticorruption inspectors who broke the Gürtel contracts-for-kickbacks scheme that engulfed a host of PP leaders in Valencia, Madrid and Castilla La Mancha. One of the top inspectors to go was the head of the National Office of Fraud Investigations (ONIF), a branch of the internal revenue agency AEAT. Víctor de la Morena had been in charge of many criminal probes, including the Gürtel kickbacks-for-contracts scheme and the ongoing case against royal son-in-law Iñaki Urdangarin. The PP has now put in it own people who, no doubt, will be concentrating on digging up dirt on some of the country’s top Socialists.

In an effort to raise money for Down’s syndrome children in both Wales and Spain, "The Welsh National Day" was marked by a fun day organised by the newly formed "Welsh Society – Costa Del Sol" in Bemalmadena last Thursday with local acts such asRicky Lavazza, Jason Oliver, Laura Elen, Mario Ross and Martin Broad performing. The event began at midday at The Blue Moon (Bonanza Sq.) and at 4pm at CJs Karaoke bar. Welsh food was also on offer for visitors to try. Top Welsh comic "Lenny Dee" performed at CJs on the 3rd of March and Picasso’s Show Bar on the 4th of March – as on St. David’s Day he was appearing at Kensington Palace. All nationalities were welcomed to attend and enjoy this the first ever organised by the newly formed society. The small Welsh community in the area were joined by Welsh holiday makers and the event raised an estimated 5.000 euros for two Down’s syndrome schools, one in Benalmadena and one in South Wales.

DAVID THE DOGMAN: Barking part 1 Barking at night The simple answer is to ignore the dog. By barking, it is training you to respond. You might have a few noisy nights but you will be showing it that barking is not productive. Certainly do not respond by shouting or scolding. If you do so the dog will only know that its barking has been productive by making you bark as well. Barking, excessive The reason for excessive barking in one word is FEAR, and the dog is frightened because it has not been socialised. It is nervous of every sound it hears and barks in a futile attempt to send the perceived threat
away. Sometimes a dog which constantly whines, cries, barks, or is destructive, suffers from skin problems brought about by scratching and licking themselves because of the stress of being left. Generally this is not a problem with dogs which have been socialised through training classes at an early age. The solution is socialisation – through obedience classes and home management. Barking when the owner is out This is a big problem caused by bad owners. The dog is a pack animal and if, as a member of the family pack, it is given the freedom of the
home by being allowed to rest on the furniture and sleep in bedrooms, then it will suffer a form of stress when the pack goes off to work because it expects to go with the pack. When people leave home they should not look, touch or talk to the dog for about 10 minutes beforehand. The same applies when coming home: ignore, no talking, no patting, no looking, nothing. This way, the dog understands that its barking has not brought the owner back. If it has been barking while you were away and is rewarded by your attention when you come back, it then thinks it was its barking that brought you
back to the house. A dog’s bark is said to be worse than its bite. It certainly is for the neighbours of a constantly barking dog left alone for too long, unsocialised and with uncaring owners. Hopefully no readers would permit their dogs to be such a community nuisance. David is on Talk Radio every Saturday from 10am - 11.am (Calahonda to Nerja) 88.9fm (Calahonda to Algeciras) 91.9fm

You Don’t Have to Struggle Alone The Costa del Sol is a lovely place to retire to with (normally) year round warmth and friendly ex-pat communities. Unfortunately, there can be a few drawbacks. Excellent as the Spanish health care system is, there is a tendency to discharge patients much sooner than their counterparts in the UK. Once at home, people often have no one to help them through these delicate weeks, as their families are miles away,
and perhaps their friends are incapable of providing them with the assistance they need. Even a trip to the local store can result in a nasty fall due to the neglected infrastructure of many streets, and people find themselves confined to the house with no outside help. Well, here is some good news. There is now a reliable friendly service to call on in the event of any of the above, or similar. The Mooring Home Care Service is a family run
business – with a qualified staff nurse – prepared for all eventualities. They can assist you with dressing, shopping, medication, errands and general daily care, in fact any everyday chore that you suddenly may find yourself incapable of performing. Whether you just need their services once or twice to perhaps change a dressing, or administer medication, or a long term service, for example a regular shopping trip, The Mooring Home Care Service is here to help.
Baden Powell Day celebrations Members of the uniformed organisations from The Ark Church in Fuengirola were joined by the Brownies from Coin for a Founders Day Service at The Ark in which everyone renewed their promise. Louise McEwan and Charly Lashmore were invested into the Explorer Scout Unit and Mia Parkinson moved up from the Cub Scout Pack and was invested into the Scout Troop. Following the service everyone hiked along the Paseo Maritimo to Sohail Castle and then down to the beach where other family members and parents arrived to join in the fun. BBQ equipment was soon being set up on one of the beach boats provided and some leaders and parent helpers started to prepare lunch. Meanwhile all the Beaver Scouts, Rainbow Guides, Cub Scouts, Brownie Guides, Scouts, Guides and Explorer Scouts gathered round for a “Swimming up ceremony” in which two of the Beaver Scouts Harry Rowarth and Ellie Parkinson swam up to the Cub Pack and made their Cub Scout Promise. This ceremony was followed by Kelly Igwemadu of the Cub Pack moving up to the
You need never go hungry either, as they provide an excellent meals on wheels service with delicious home cooked meals delivered to your door. So if you are in need of a compassionate and reliable care service, or know of anyone who would benefit from such, just give The Mooring Home Care Service a call on 602 431 723, 632 735 626 or 952 564 953 and they will be more than happy to help.

troop and making his Scout Promise. Special guest James Eddington, who joined the Scout Movement in 1936, posed for photographs with the youngest Beaver Scout and two of the Cub Scouts after the investitures (pictured above) and then moved on to talk to groups of youngsters and the leaders. The leaders and Explorer Scouts organised a number of games and activities to keep all the young people occupied while parents relaxed enjoying the warm weather. Just before lunch dolphins were sighted close to the shore and everyone rushed down to the shoreline to enjoy a wonderful display as the dolphins and seagulls harvested the fish.
After lunch games were cleared away and a campfire lit to provide a traditional end to a Scouting and Guiding Day with songs and sketches provided by the different groups. The Explorer Scouts soon had parents and family members joining in with the youngsters and the spectacle drew a few interested spectators many of whom had not previously been aware that Scout and Guide Groups are available in Fuengirola. An important event coming up in March is the presentation of a Queen’s Scout Award to one of the members of the Scout network. The presentation will be made in Fuengirola Town Hall on 26th March. Parents and friends will be invited to attend and anyone who holds the Queen’s Scout Award is also invited to attend. If you would like to find out more about the opportunities for young people and adults to join in Scouting and Guiding in Fuengirola please refer to their website www.fuengirolascouts.com

dance venue called the Amris Jazz Café, decked out in a Caribbean beach theme and popular with golfers. Barry, also responsible for putting Linda's Bar and three other bars on the Fuengirola musical map (hence the name; 5 Bar Cinco), stripped it bare and spent a fortune on air-conditioning and high tech sound proofing. That is one of the keys to Pógs longevity and live music success, it's completely sound proofed, cool in both senses of the word – and big.
P
ógs today plays host to some of the best and most likeable musicians on the coast. Still with them from the very first night is Steve Nelson. Steve previously with Shack-Attack and twice a music bar owner himself (Bull n' Bush and Katie’s) now regularly fronts the increasingly popular 5.30 pm Sunday Session with The Steve Nelson Band. Other regular performers are Alice Reay, Mike Dickenson, Monkey Tennis, Bud Spencer Band and the Stolen Gnomes. In more recent times there has been a greater integration of good Spanish, Anglo Spanish and Argentinian bands, Fun Fiction, D'spetos, Art Club and Stereo 80 – throw in the newest Costa band The Project, drop in a few more names like Carl Morgan, Carl Parry (pictured), Dave Heavyside and Amelinde and you have a real live music bar of some
standing.
P
ógs is no generation ghetto, all are welcome, but it is a big hit with the 35 to 50 plus and upwards generation who love to let their hair down and get it on now and again. Essentially Pógs has a rock blues leaning, but the younger more funky bands like Fun Fiction and Dinamita keep it fresh. It is ideal for showing off, especially to visiting friends and relatives who enjoy a good night out, it hits the spot every time, excellent bar crew, atmosphere and authentic décor, with a wooden dance floor, pool table and live sports TVs and soon a tapas and snacks kitchen.
T
he Saint Patrick's day celebration knees up on Saturday 17th March is a Pógs flagship event. Opening in the afternoon at 1.00 pm this is an all-day affair. There is a thirty Euro drinks voucher to be had for best Irish costume, free shots and T shirts and a lot of green decorations. At three o'clock, one and half hours of foot tapping traditional Celtic reels and jigs with just a touch of Chicago
fusion from The Stolen Gnomes, Ireland v England Six Nations Rugby at 5.00 pm. At six pm the Steve Nelson band cracks on with more Irish rock classics from The Commitments, Thin Lizzy, Christy Moore and the like. Then The Project steams in at 10.00 pm to perform a more contemporary blend of Irish music, including U2, The Pogues and the Galway cult band The Saw Doctors. Finally the whole day and night usually ends up almost out of control, with both the stage and the dance floor full and bursting to the limit, everyone claiming to be Irish or having Irish ancestors and professing an undying devotion to the regular consumption of Guinness and the love of all things Irish. You're lucky – the next day's a Sunday!
P
ógs (available for private parties) is just 70 m up from the PYR Hotel by Fuengirola port on Calle Lamo de Espinosa Tel. 662 594 111. For more information on the bands and Pógs see Facebook, YouTube or Myspace. By Pete Woodall - Woody's, Los Boliches.

Rumours or more? Lux Mundi trips and classes
Rehearsals are well under way for the next TAPAS production – ’Rumours’ by Neil Simon. The play is set at the home of the Deputy Finance Minister on the eve of his tenth wedding anniversary. Four high profile couples have been invited to the party, but on arrival find a house devoid of servants, no hostess and a host who appears to have just attempted suicide (surviving, but with a gunshot wound to his ear lobe). As the play unfolds the guests all have their say as to what has happened and of course rumours abound. The guests attempt to unravel the
mystery with hilarious consequences and with an eye to protecting their own interests. The guests include a celebrity TV chef, a prominent psychoanalyst, two high profile lawyers, and a prospective MP with a neurotic wife. Neil Simon is a brilliant writer of farce and “Rumours” is no exception. Be at Los Arcos on the 6th, 7th or 8th of April to see what transpires. If you don’t get there rumours may start to fly! Tickets are on sale now and are available from the usual outlets and via the Box Office. Telephone 635 293714.
On Tuesday 13th March at 5.30pm in the large salon, Dr. Pernille Knudtzon will be giving a talk on arthritis. For all of those who are not as young as they used to be this is a talk not to be missed. And on Thursday 29th Lux Mundi have a talk on 'Legal Affairs' including basic tips on living in Spain – how Spanish law affects you, your rights and legal obligations here. This includes things like bank accounts, cars, property, etc. Again this is one not to be missed if you are here or are thinking of coming here to the Costa del Sol to live.
At both these talks tea and coffee will be available and a minimum donation of 1 Euro will be very much appreciated to help cover Lux Mundi's costs. Their next all-day trip is to Granada on the Friday March 23rd visiting the Mirador de San Nicolas and the Barrio Del Albaycin. More details from the desk – info below. Ladies, if you fancy making your own jewellery (or at least trying) Lux Mundi have a class on Friday evenings at 4.30pm. Bring your good eyes or glasses!

John Carter
ilms hoping to receive FmuchAcademy Awards fare better when they are
By: Andrew Stanton Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe American Civil War veteran John Carter has lost his family in the war, feels betrayed and loses his humanity. He has no roots and bitterly heads off to the Wild West to search for gold -– and stumbles onto a hoard of treasure in an Apache cave. From there he is mysteriously transported from Arizona to Mars, and is captured by the four-armed Tharks. He discovers that the planet is being torn apart by warring races, and guess what, there’s even a feisty Princess to save – does that ring any bells?
Well, Princess Dejah Thoris (Collins) may appear to be a replica of Star Wars’ Princess Leia – but actually she was around long before George Lucas came up with his Star War characters. For John Carter is one of a series of novels written by Edgar Rice Burroughs back in the early 1900s. Rice Burroughs is famous of course for his Tarzan series, but over the decades the John Carter books have appealed to new generations of fans who
have adored the fantastical world and its creatures so imaginatively created by the author. It’s a world ably realised by director Stanton and the movie is brimming with spectacular special effects. It’s a mix of humour, action, aliens and spaceships and an epic romp that mixes sci-fi with romance and adventure. Carter discovers that the planetary conditions on Mars, or Barsoom as it is called by the inhabitants, give him superhuman powers. He can jump incredible distances and is
incredibly strong. He finds himself at the centre of the conflict, and his mission is to save the princess and help restore order to the war-torn planet. There’s a lot going on, and plenty of weird looking aliens, so audiences will have to pay attention to hang on to the story. But if it becomes a hit at the Box Office then there plenty more John Carter books to fuel a new franchise. It’s definitely fun for all the family.
Prepare to be Gassed! Last week I started thinking about a band that I used to love, but couldn´t for the life of me remember the name of the album that I had. After whizzing through my record collection I found it, the band was called Gaslight Anthem and the album was “The ‘59 Sound”. Gaslight Anthem were virtually unheard of outside of New Jersey, but over the last few years – due to major internet buzz – they seem to have exploded. A friend of mine brought them to my attention back in 2008, and I have to say I wasn’t disappointed. The music drips with nostalgia, and the lead singer has a raw voice that he manages to control and keep
in check, whilst sounding passionate and completely sincere. It’s an honest, hearton- sleeve punk album with a Springsteen kick. The title track stands out, as does `The Backseat' but to be honest there aren't any bad tracks on this album and although it is short, it manages to pack song after song of great music in. Top
riff after riff and hook after hook will keep you coming back for more and this makes for one highly recommended album indeed. There are a few Springsteen references on this album that fans of his will notice and will produce a wry smile. It's Emo music that is actually emotional and not
released towards the end of the year. Those released earlier in the year tend to be somewhat overlooked, but I don’t think that was the reason for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy walking away empty handed, especially if it was hoping for a Best Adaptation award.
J
ohn Le Carré novels are notoriously difficult to portray on celluloid and the only successful one, as far as I’m concerned, was The Constant Gardener. any of you will M remember the BBC adaptation, in weekly parts, of both Tinker Tailor and Smiley’s People and would agree that the character of George Smiley was one of Sir Alec Guinness’s most memorable roles. I recall watching the series avidly and also watching the midweek repeat just to make sure I hadn’t missed a trick, so I was excited to see the new film version.
I
had read that Le Carré was pleased with the result – even moreso than the series – but then he understood what was going on! about identikit haircuts or music vids that are more like mobile phone adverts. This band plays music because they want to, need to, because that's all they have. Every once in a while a band will come along and blow you away, Gaslight Anthem is one of those bands, and “The ‘59 Sound” for me, will always be my favourite album of theirs. All I can say is “turn it on and turn it up!”. Written by Abigail Tyler
t is quite a complex IGeorge tale, preambling into Smiley coming out of retirement to flush out the mole amongst the heads of British Intelligence. It’s pace is very slow and studied and the dialogue at times stilted. The most unfortunate error for me was that Gary Oldman tried too hard to resurrect Guinness’s Smiley which just resulted in a cardboard cut- out of the original. Oldman is an excellent actor, so why he did not, after reading the
book, take the character to be his own, (as Daniel Craig did with James Bond), is quite baffling. From the outset, the film seemed to be deliberately elusive so anyone not familiar with the plot and terminology had a hard time trying to make any sense of it. It was certainly not “Viewer Friendly” in my opinion. know stories about real IBond, spies are nothing like but entertainment need not be so obscure. Anyone wanting to watch a real edgy spy series, with a lot of facts thrown in for good measure, would be hard pressed to find anything better than the American series “The Company” which had an astounding performance from Michael Keaton. This remarkable series, filmed almost in sepia, twisted and turned to the very end and left your mouth gaping at the end of every episode. really don’t wish to appear Iappreciate shallow, and I do that Tinker was never going to be a roller coaster of a movie, but after watching six old men sitting around smoking and drinking whiskey for two hours, I did feel rather cheated.

You could be feeling an inner stirring of emotions and this could cause you to do or to say something that you may regret later on. At the same time, this energy could work in your favour as others see you smouldering with inner passion and feeling, so much so, they find it hard to look the other way. Monetary rewards are likely, don’t miss an opportunity that is starring you in the face, as sometimes what we need is already before us - we just have to acknowledge it. This is a passionate and sensual week when love and affection are high on your agenda. Be true to yourself and this could be one of the biggest turning points in your life. There are many parts of you that are coming together emotionally to create a force to plough into the tasks and objectives you need to accomplish. You may have to give up something first, as in a bad habit, in order to make room for the abundance that is trying to reach your door. Do not underestimate someone else’s ambition, intentions or ignorance as a person may not be quite what they seem and this individual may go to great lengths to get what they want. Mercury meets Uranus this week and from this will be born an idea that surprises and ignites you from the inside out; your mind is opening up, speeding up, multi-tasking becomes effortless, in fact your mind is literally on fire right now. Clear your vision and direct your mind with a fierce focus. You are able to observe your life and your future objectively at the moment and this allows you to make some strong decisions that will serve to propel you further forward with courage and confidence. In addition, this is an opportunity to lose some attachments that have been holding you back. This week you will be earning your wings through your intuition and instinct, pay attention to your appearance and this will help your to soar. It is great to dream a dream but you can’t just stop and sit down and wait for it all to happen, you are expected to keep moving forward and to keep working by handling the things that are within your reach. A lot of people are looking up to you for leadership and guidance so this week you have to rise to the occasion. Direct your emotions to that which will bring you the most positive results and try and overcome the negativity of others. There are lots of positive things coming your way but it is important for you to be in the know and pay attention to what is going on around you. Everything will all fall into place in time but right now your personal relationships are undergoing some changes. The key is to allow others to see the real you, do not hide who you are to appease others, the days of you being over-looked are over. Family becomes important to you this week.

Your powers of attraction are off the map this week and it seems that everybody wants to know more about you. Nothing, however, bores you more than superficialities. For you it is a pure waste of time to expend vital energy talking nonsense, it makes no sense, for you less is always more. There is something that needs to be fixed in a key relationship, something needs to be said, there is a time for everything and it appears that the time is now.
SAGITTARIUS It feels like make it, or break it time, so don’t be tempted to be sidetracked at this
point. This is all about getting your home life in order as you need a sanctuary to retreat to that feels safe and secure and filled with the things you love and care about. Something has been tricky and testing you to find a way through it but in November 22nd - the 11th hour you find that way. By the weekend it will be time for some fun and December 21st social mingling that could cause your heart to skip a beat.
CAPRICORN It is so easy to get trapped in the ruts and routines of life where it's nothing but hard
work and it appears that there are few rewards, you may have slipped into a few habits lately that could be dragging you down. Perhaps you have been restricting yourself a bit too much and now is the time to let a little spontaneity back in. You December 22nd - could start by simplifying your domestic life to give you more room for fun and January 19th adventure.

This is not the time to get on your soap box as you could lose the ability to connect with others. There is no doubt that you are finding your own personal power rise within you, however, the lesson in play here is knowing when to take action and when to hold back. The focus at the start of the week is your financial life and what is needed to ensure your future happiness, trust your insights and you can’t go wrong.
The missing elements of your life are looming into focus and this is opening up all kinds of possibilities and questions for you. You may have to take those extra risks and chances that you know are right for you, even if it goes against the grain. A ray of hope is shining in the sky on all that may yet be possible. Your family and relationships that mean a lot to you are going to reach a new level of relating, a little effort goes a long way.

SOME WERE WEARABLE BuT SOME WERE DEFINITELY NOT
From flowery embroidered tapestry to sleek and elegant … Paris fashion week had something for everyone Valentino in particular combined military chic with beautiful cloth as you can see in the red ensemble, pictured right. Leather featured large at the start of Valentino’s show but went on from some somewhat austere designs to hauntingly feminine dresses. This collection was definitely one that could be worn. Karl Lagerfield on the other hand (pictured far right)had decked the halls of his show like an ice-cave with life sized crystals glittering to show off the use of metallic fabrics in his collection for autumn and crystals on the heels and soles of the shoes his models were wearing. However, the Lagerfield collection, although interesting,
was not something you could actually wear to work. Trousers are a big feature of all the designers’ collections for autumn, with some having accentuated lines on the hips, but most were thin, sleek and cut just an nth above the ankle – so they can be worn with a dress over the top as well as with jumpers and beautiful shirts. Twinset jacket and skirt combinations – the classic house ensemble – came cut looser and wider than usual and with a Lurex-like glitter to them. Shaved sheepskin jackets, velvet jeans irregularly gridded with silver seams, a matte and metallic hued feathery dresses were also on show on the catwalk.
Meanwhile some were saying that Chloé had lost the plot with her collection consisting of just six cotton poplin dresses ... for autumn?? Bruni, below did rather better than Lagerfield too.
Valentino left. Lagerfield, right
A bit bloated? Tim Burton’s paintings and drawings go on show
He's always been an advocate for healthy eating, especially when it comes to the meals served in schools. But it seems Jamie Oliver may have been eating the wrong kind of school dinners in recent months, judging by pictures of the TV chef at the launch of the Ministry of Food in Melbourne, Australia, on Tuesday. The father-of-four looked noticeably plumper and appeared to have piled on the pounds since his last public event.

Film director and artist Tim Burton (pictured right) has put his characters, paintings and drawings on display in Paris. The exhibition, which was created in 2009 by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, offers people a chance to fully immerse themselves in the director's spooky and weird world. The retrospective will run from March 7th to August 5th 2012. It features more than 700 works spanning Burton's 27-year film career including some that were made before he directed his most famous movies such as Batman or Edward Scissorhands. It presents an impressive number of drawings, some drawn on towels or napkins. The filmmaker said drawing has always helped him to express himself. "As you can tell I don't speak very well and it was something that for me was always my form of communication, it was a way for me to explore my
subconscious ideas, without really speaking and it wasn't until I became a director that I had to learn how to start speaking to people," Burton said. Entitled Tim Burton, The Exhibition, the showcase features all of Burton's films, as well as student and short films, cartoons, childhood drawings, puppets, costumes and sculptures that he designed. Burton is known for his wacky, surreal characters like those in his version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. "Those kind of movies help sort of shape me in. I always felt with monsters that they were the most
emotional characters in those films," he said. "And so I had always that idea of perception, I grew up feeling that people looking at you are a kind of monster, so I was related to those characters like whether it was Frankenstein or KingKong. "Most monsters have that symbol of misperception and actually not being what they seem and so for me that's why there were always very strong emotional symbols for the way I felt." At 53, the filmmaker who now lives in London, is currently finishing two movies. Dark Shadows stars Johnny Depp and Eva
Green and is due for release in May. Frankenweennie, a 3D remake of a 1984 short film he did, revisits the myth of Frankenstein and will be ready by Halloween.

Vitamin E 'bad for bones' Vitamin E supplements may not keep bones as healthy as some past studies have indicated, according to the latest study by researchers at Keio University in Japan. The relationship between nutrients such as vitamin D and bone health are well established, but there is far less research which looks at the role of vitamin E. The Japanese team looked at what happened when mice had not enough vitamin E, and what happened when they were given supplements. Although some early studies suggested that consumption of the
vitamin had a positive effect on bone mass, the Japanese researchers found the reverse was true, with bone health improving in the deficient mice, and losing bone mass when given supplements. Dr Helen Macdonald, who researches the influence of nutrition on bone health at Aberdeen University, said the Japanese findings tallied with her own and a small
Cancer denial kills 1000s Thousands of people in the UK are dying unnecessarily because they are too scared to mention early symptoms of cancer to their doctor, a survey of 2,000 for Cancer Research UK has shown. A spokesman said people might delay getting symptoms checked out because they are worried what the doctor might find, yet early diagnosis is key to treating cancer successfully. More than three-quarters of people asked to list possible warning signs and symptoms of cancer failed to mention pain, coughing or problems with bowels or bladder. And more than two-thirds also failed to list bleeding. Cancer Research UK has teamed up with Tesco to raise £10m to fund 32 early diagnosis research projects across the UK. Cancer Research UK leaflets on early signs of cancer will be on display at the store's checkouts.
number of studies of other studies, which found negative effects. She said vitamin E supplements involve doses far higher than those in a normal diet. She added: "There is increasing evidence that taking supplements doesn't do any good, and if anything, may be doing harm." Vitamin E is found in oils, green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli and in almonds and hazelnuts.

The Hairy Bikers Bakeation
Thur, Mar 8th 10.00pm
Si King and Dave Myers bike through Europe, searching for the best baking each country has to offer. They start their 5,000-mile road trek in Norway, picking up tips and recipes from professionals and home bakers including a 95-year-old who still makes waffles on her 65-year-old waffle iron. The duo also rustle up some of their own favourite Norwegian recipes - Scandinavian rye bread, cardamom and lemon cookies.

Roger Childs Just recently I took a friend of mind to the Centro Salud in Coin and as I waited outside for them I witnessed what is the most appalling example of gross stupidity I think I have ever seen. This centre for sick people is situated at the top of a very steep hill so the elderly and infirm who have no transport have to climb the incline from the feria ground
Coin to the entrance of the health centre. I watched as several elderly patients (some with walking sticks) attempted to ascend this unbelievably steep hill with a great deal of effort. As they neared the top of this formidable obstacle they were obviously gasping for breath and I imagine feeling very distressed at the situation they had just experienced.
Tracy Davies At least three houses were robbed in Calle Campanales last week (that is the road in front of the Venta la Morena that connects Camino de Coin to Las Lagunas). I noticed that you have been warning
I have no idea who made the decision to build this centre for treating the sick in this most inaccesible situation but they get my vote for the most ridiculous planning decision I think I have ever seen. I just hope that the person who did it has to experience personally the difficulty they have bequeathed on others.
by email people about such things in The News so thought you could warn people around this area too. Editor says: Yes, thanks. But they’re also back to stabbing the tyres of your car and taking
anything they can from inside the car while you’re changing the tyre so keep all bags etc with you. The latest to get done was a friend of mine in the underground carpark in the centre of Coin. Take care!
Benalmadena Bowls Club Open Competition Saturday the 25th February saw the beginning of the Benalmadena Open 2012 – the competition comprised of Mixed Triples, Mixed Pairs and Mixed Singles. In the final Mike Detheridge’s team were trailing for much of the game until the 17th end when they picked up 6 shots bringing the score to 15 – 16 to Gordon and Margaret Kains, together with Murray Johns, and therefore setting up a grandstand finish. However the formidable Kain team picked up the winning shot to win the match.
The Pairs final once again, featured Gordon and Margaret Kain against Mary Detheridge and Brian Todd (Benalmadena) – the formidable Kains proved too strong for Brian and Mary and ran out 19-10 winners. The Singles Competition was played in a two sets of 9 ends format. Gordon Kain was playing in his third final and up against Bill Gregory, it was an exciting prospect, with both players in fine form. Once

again the “Kain Machine”” proved stronger and ran out the winner to give Gordon a clean sweep of wins in the competition. The whole competition was well attended by supporters, who enjoyed watching some exciting bowling. Triples Winners included Murray Johns, Margaret Kain, Gordon Kain – Runners Up, Kate Morris, Bridgett Gunn, who are pictured above.

e wandering stars This week is a perfect time to go planet spotting as all five planets that are visible with the naked eye will be on display!
L
ook close to the western horizon shortly after sunset and try to spot tiny Mercury. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and so is always seen very close to the horizon either just after sunset or just before sunrise. This week Mercury will be at its most distant point to the left of the Sun and sets about an hour and a half after the Sun has set giving you plenty of time to find it. Once you have found Mercury in the twilight you’ll be surprised at just how bright it can appear – it will have a definite pink colour to it.
M
oving up from Mercury is Venus shining dazzlingly bright at the moment. Like Mercury, Venus is closer to the Sun than we are so it always appears in the west after sunset or in the east before sunrise. Venus is also at its most extreme point from the sun at the moment – known as greatest western elongation. For the next few months Venus will gradually begin to move closer and closer to the horizon as it passes between us and the Sun on June 6th. This year Venus will not only pass between the Sun and us, it will actually cross the face of the Sun in a very rare event, a ‘transit of Venus’. I’ll be saying more about the transit of Venus closer to the date.
F
urther up and slightly to the left of Venus is Jupiter. Jupiter is by far the biggest of all the planets; it is so big that it could easily swallow up all the other planets in the solar system with room to spare. Jupiter is almost on the far side of the Sun from us, now a very long way away but it is still shining brightly. Jupiter takes almost 12 years to orbit the Sun but keep your eye on it over the next few days to watch it moving across the sky.
E
ach night Jupiter and Venus will move closer together until next Tuesday 13th March when they will almost touch each other in the sky. Of course they are not really close to each other – it is only a line of sight effect. This conjunction between Venus and Jupiter is the closest that the two planets have appeared for many hundreds of years and on 25th and 26th March a thin crescent Moon will join the little group making for a very impressive photo opportunity, try to catch it if you can!
M
ars makes its closest approach to the Earth this week and can be seen rising in the east at sunset and is due south by midnight. Mars is easy to recognise because of its vivid red colour and it is also the brightest object in that part of the sky at the moment. Try not to confuse Mars with the slightly fainter, red coloured star, Regulus in Leo the lion as Mars moves backward in its retrograde motion toward Regulus over the next few weeks. As it is such a small planet Mars is always slightly disappointing when viewed through even a modest sized telescope; it is the second smallest planet in the solar system after Mercury and never appears as much more than a tiny red coloured disc.
M
aking up this celestial quintet is the return of Saturn the ringed planet. Saturn rises in the east around 11pm very close to the star Spica in the constellation of Virgo. Saturn and Spica appear about the same brightness but Spica is brilliant white in colour while Saturn is a sandy yellow in colour and by rule of thumb ‘Stars twinkle while planets don’t’.
S
aturn is once again beginning to display its rings to their best and even through a small pair of binoculars the elongated shape of Saturn caused by the rings can be easily seen. About four years ago Saturn’s rings were presented ‘edge on’ from Earth and so were almost invisible as they are so thin. Now they are almost ‘fully open’ again and are looking spectacular once more.

Rory McIlroy holds off Tiger Woods to go No 1 Rory McIlroy calmly waited out a storm delay on Sunday morning and weathered another storm wearing a red shirt later in the afternoon to win the Honda Classic at the PGA National and oust Luke Donald as the world's No. 1 player. With gut-check pars throughout his final round on the wind-swept Champion Course — he made all 15 of his putts inside 10 feet and had two big upand-downs for par out of bunkers on the 15th and 17th holes — McIlroy closed with a 1-under-par 69 to finish at 12-under 268 and hold off Tiger Woods and journeyman Tom Gillis by two shots. Another two shots back in fourth was rival Lee Westwood, who came home with a 63. But it was Woods who caught McIlroy's attention
knocked in the putt to regain a two-shot advantage he didn't relinquish. "It was tough today, especially when Tiger made a charge and posted 10 under," said McIlroy, who enthusiastically embraced his father, Gerry, behind the 18th green after his third win on the
with a 62, the best closing round of his career. Beginning nine shots behind McIlroy and six groups in front of him, Woods eagled the third hole, added four other birdies and finished with another eagle on 18 when he arrowed a 5iron from 216 yards to 8 feet. McIlroy was facing an 8-foot birdie putt on 13 when the roars from Woods' eagle on 18 reached his ears and his lead had shrunk to one. Refusing to be shaken, McIlroy stepped up and
Tour and his 10th top-five finish in his last 11 starts around the world. Rory tweeted later “What a day! Very honoured and proud to be the world’s number 1 golfer! Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way!” And the man who he replaced at the top spot Luke Donald tweeted Rory “Congrats, enjoy the view.” So, three years after landing in America for
his pro debut as a teenager with a mop of unruly hair and plenty of hype, and one week after falling short of becoming No. 1 when he lost to Hunter Mahan in the final of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship, the young man from Northern Ireland did finally manage to achieve his lifelong dream. Getafe 1 - 3 Malaga Malaga started with their customary slow start, but grew into the game and after 12 minutes Rondon had a good shot saved. The first half was a dreary

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain exposure to both English and Spanish residents living in Spain as well as providing community support to a local growing club at affordable and long-term rates. affair with both sides looking pedestrian. Rondon had another header saved but Malaga never looked at ease and on 42 minutes Malaga payed the penalty, Getafe winger Valera got free on the left and his great cut back found Castro who slotted home. Getafe going into the break 1 nil up. At half time Malaga manager Pellegrini put on Eliseu and Joaquin and what a change, Getafe hit the bar on 51 minutes but
after that Malaga never looked back. Seba missed a great chance on 54 minutes
heading down and over, when looking easier to score. Malaga's heads never went down though and on 57 minutes got their reward. Eliseu equalising, smashing the
ball into the top far corner with his right foot. After continuing to control the game Malaga went two up, Toulalan found space on the edge of the box to fire home from 25 yards out. The great away win was sealed in the 92nd minute, after Carzola picked the ball up just inside the Getafe half, and from his break saw the Getafe keeper off his line to chip the ball into the goal from 40 yards. A great goal and win that keeps Malaga in a European position. Report by: Scott (Toulalan) Forbes

Bradley Wiggins London 2012: Team GB makes a great 'should avoid handshakes' start in Paris-Nice at Olympics Stage 2 – Mantes-la-Jolie to Orleans, 185.5km Team Sky's Bradley Wiggins moved into the overall lead at Paris-Nice after making the most of getting into the

crucial break on stage two. The Brit had started the 185.5 kilometre stage from Mantes-la-Jolie to Orleans just a second behind leader Gustav Larsson (Vacansoleil-DCM) after an outstanding display in the rain in the opening time trial 24 hours earlier. proved a What fascinating second day had been expected to feature a bunch finish, given the flat nature of the terrain, but strong crosswinds played a key part in splintering the peloton shortly after the halfway point. Most of the general classification contenders made their way into the front group of 21 riders, but not Larsson and there was soon a gap of over a minute as the field split into echelons. That made Wiggins the virtual leader out on the road and he helped his cause further by taking the day's intermediate sprint and a
bonus three seconds. When it came to the finish, Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma Quickstep) outsprinted JJ Rojas (Movistar) and John Degenkolb (Project 1t4i) for the victory but the day's big winner was Wiggins as the front group all came in together and 2:29 ahead of the rest. It means he now general leads the classification by six seconds from Levi Leipheimer (Omega Pharma - Quickstep), with Boonen a further second back in third. Wiggins had been given valuable assistance in the front group by team-mate Geraint Thomas, with the pair of them piling on the pace at the front in order to maximise their advantage. Thomas briefly looked in with a chance of the stage win when he surged down the outside with 500 metres to go but the Welshman eventually crossed the line in 10th, one spot ahead of Wiggins. That helped him move up to ninth overall, 28 seconds back. Report & photo courtesy of www.teamsky.com
British athletes have been warned against shaking hands with rivals and dignitaries at the London Olympics. The British Olympic Association (BOA) is concerned about illness damaging the host nation's chances of success. Asked if handshakes should be avoided, BOA chief medical officer Ian McCurdie said: "I think, within reason, yes. "The greatest threat to performance is illness and possibly injury. We are talking about minimising risk of illness. It is all about hand hygiene." Around 10,000 sportsmen and women will take part in the Games, with British athletes set to share rooms, while eating with competitors from more than 200 other competing nations. McCurdie added: "Being at an Olympic Games means you are normally inside a bubble and so there is effectively quite a limited number of people that you interact with when you are away in another country. Chelsea's caretaker boss Roberto di Matteo wants more togetherness from his players after the sacking of manager Andre Villas-Boas. Di Matteo's former Blues team-mate Eddie Newton has joined the coaching staff until the end of the season."He is a Chelsea man and I want some passion from people who care about this club," explained Di Matteo after taking his first training session."This is one of our jobs, to transmit that to the team. We need to regroup." Newton, 40, made 214 appearances as a Chelsea player from 1990 to 1999.
