WORLD NEWS - RELATIONS SEVERELY STRAINED

Militants 'attack Kandahar killings site' Militants in Afghanistan launched an attack on Tuesday on a government delegation which was visiting the site in Panjwai in Kandahar province where a US soldier killed 16 civilians on Sunday.

reporters that the attack had not appeared to be serious and the delegation "assumed that it was the national army that started to fire in the air". One Afghan soldier was killed and three other people injured but the delegation, which included Kandahar's governor and the minister of border and tribal affairs, was safe and and had returned to Kandahar city.

ICKHAM’S

WORLD HELP

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

I am pleased to report that The News Help Desk is going very well under Duncan Burrell’s supervision with people being helped with their problems as far ranging as IBI, motoring worries, telefonica and Vodafone (of course!) and all manner of queries great and small. If you have any problems you’d like help with, give Duncan a call on 607 590 977 or pop in and see him. Everything you tell us is in the strictest confidence. This week we have had one of our cats in the Veterinary’s. He is 15years-old and has been a very healthy big cat since he was born but, recently he had lost an awful lot of weight and suddenly turned very yellow. In a panic I got him to the vet’s, he was stabilised and came home. Then last Thursday at 1am he was yelling his head off so, downstairs I went and found him sprawled on the floor unable to stand or move his back legs. He had suffered an embolism but, because I managed to get him to my vet’s quick enough, he has regained the use of his legs, is much better and is coming home tomorrow. Thank God for vets that get out of their beds at stupid o’clock to look after our pets. Thanks to Paqui Torrico at the Pet Centro Veterinary Clinic in the road to the side of the municipal market in Alhaurin el Grande (tel: 952 491 655 if you need a great vet and, what’s more her veterinary nurse Charo speaks very good English!).

March 11th dead remembered Madrid regional president Esperanza Aguirre and Madrid Mayor Ana Botella headed the ceremony held at 9 am in the Puerta del Sol on Monday to commemorate the 191 people who died in the March 11th train bombings in 2004 and honour the people who helped the

survivors. The ceremony had been delayed by 24 hours to avoid clashing with the protest marches called by the unions on Sunday. The two women laid a crown of laurel leaves at the foot of the commemorative plaque on the wall of the

old Royal Post Office which now houses the Madrid government before a fiveminute silence was observed, which began to the strains of Mozart's Requiem. As well as remembering the victims, the plaque also cites the “exemplary

Militants 'attack Kandahar killings site' Anti-US sentiment was already high after soldiers burned some copies of the Koran at a Nato base in Kabul last month, sparking deadly riots across the country. On Tuesday morning, some 600 students took part in a rally in the eastern city of Jalalabad, condemning the Kandahar attack and chanting "Death to America! Death to Obama!". US President Barack Obama said the shooting was

"absolutely heartbreaking and tragic". But he said international forces must be withdrawn from Afghanistan in a responsible way, and would not "rush for the exits" until they had made sure Afghans could secure their borders and stop al-Qaeda from getting back into the country. The Birmingham Six were freed by the Appeal Court after 16 years in jail

Trial run for general strike disappointing The protest marches called by the unions in some 60 cities across the country on Sunday against the government's labour reforms brought out disappointingly low numbers. The organisers – the Workers Commissions and the UGT (General Workers Union) – claimed that more than 400,000 had turned out in both Madrid and Barcelona. The police put the numbers much lower – 30,000 in Madrid and 14,000 in Barcelona. According to newspaper reports on Monday, the final figures showed that around 150,000 people had joined the strike. Some observers said the low numbers could be

attributed to the fact that the unions had called the strike for March 11th – the eighth anniversary of the Madrid train bombings, when there were several commemorative acts being planned. The unions justified their choice of date, saying Sunday the 18th is the day before Father's Day on the 19th which is a holiday in many parts of Spain, and the following Sunday, the 26th, is too close the general strike called for March 29th.

If the general strike goes ahead, it will be the sixth since the return to democracy and the first one called before a new government has completed its first 100 days. On that day, the Rajoy government will have been in power 98

days. The calling of the strike has been criticised in many quarters, not just the government, on the grounds that the country is in no mood for a general strike. However, the unions seem determined to force the government to back

The anticyclone that has been raising temperatures across Spain and keeping the rains away will move on by late Thursday or Friday and make way for three or four days of much needed rain to the north of the country, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

Until then, temperatures in some parts of the south will reach 30º, although minimum temperatures are expected to remain just below 10º in the south and much lower in the north. Once the anticyclone moves on, temperatures should be the average ones for this time of the year, the weathermen say. Meanwhile, the brotherhoods involved in the Easter processions want to know if they will be rained off again this year. The weathermen say they needn't worry because for the moment it looks as if the first half of April will continue to be dry.

Iberia staff call off strike ‘marathon’ Iberia pilots and cabin crew have called off a series of 24 one-day strikes spread over a period of three months which were scheduled to start on Friday, March 16th. The government announced on Monday that the two unions

Accuracy of road death numbers questioned New Traffic Authority director María Seguí said last week there may be some “surprises” when the final calculation of road deaths last year is made. She said the numbers released in the past had only included the deaths occurring in the 24 hour period after the accident. The Authority is currently collecting data from hospitals around the country which will include the deaths that occurred up to 30 days after the

Spain no longer major entry gate The creation of the Guardia Civil’s Strait maritime Group in Cadiz in 2011 was a major step towards making Spain a less attractive entry gate for the moroccan hashish cartels, according to the US department of State’s latest reports on strategies to control drug trafficking. increased vigilance along the Galician coast has greatly reduced the entry of cocaine from South america. However, the report said small drug traffickers could step in to fill the vaccuum left by the big cartels. madrid

Got a story? Got pictures?

Sir raymond Carr has been awarded the Santander Bank Foundation’s Prize for Hispano-British relations. The 93-year-old historian’s “Spain, from the restoration to democracy (1875-1980)” is still a standard textbook in Spanish universities. it is only one of several works by Carr covering Spain’s history from 1700 onwards, especially the Second republic (1931-36), the Civil War (1936-39) and the Franco dictatorship (1939-1975).

accidents. Former director Pere Navarro, who was credited with having reduced road deaths by half during his eight years in the job, said Spain had used the same method as the International Road Traffic and Accident Database (IRTAD) set up by OECD Road Transport Research Programme in 1988 to calculate road deaths. Sra Seguí said she was not casting doubt on Sr Navarro’s achievements – she simply wanted to present more accurate figures in future.

Cyclists stage naked safety protest

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Syria of laying landmines near its borders with Lebanon and Turkey, along routes used by refugees to escape the violence. The New-York based group Human Rights Watch called on Syria to immediately cease laying the mines, calling them "militarily ineffective" weapons that will mostly kill and injure civilians for years to come. HRW said a 28-year-old former Syrian Army deminer had reported that he and some friends removed around 300 mines from the Hasanieih area in early March, along routes

used by refugees to reach Turkey, while a 15-year-old boy had lost a leg to a landmine after trying to help a friend of a family, wounded in the government assault on the Baba Amr district of Homs, to cross the border into Lebanon. Syria – which is not among the 159 nations signed up to the 1997 Ottawa Treaty, banning the production, use and stockpiling of anti-

personnel mines – has not publicly commented on the claims. Meanwhile, government and rebel forces are accusing each other of massacring some 45 people, mainly women and children, whose bodies were found in a cellar in the besieged town of Homs on Monday. The UN says more than 8,000 people have now died since anti-government

protests erupted in Syria a year ago. On Monday, UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged the international community to speak with one voice on Syria. Mrs Clinton told the UN Security Council that Syria's "horrific campaign of violence" had "shocked the conscience of the world".

Imam dies in mosque An imam died in a fire on Monday at a Shia mosque in the Brussels suburb of Anderlecht, in what is believed to have been a deliberate attack.

The mayor of Anderlecht told local media that a petrol bomb had been thrown at the mosque on Monday evening and that a man had been detained. An eyewitness said a dozen worshippers were waiting to pray “when someone entered with a bag, with a container full of petrol inside which he threw into the centre of the room". Initial reports said the imam, who was aged

More than 500 scantily clad and nude cyclists took to the streets of Lima on saturday to call attention to safety conditions on the city's streets, cutting off roads along an 11km route through the main thoroughfares. Campaigners have claimed that hundreds of cyclists are killed on the roads every year because of reckless driving. Many of the protesters painted slogans and signs on their bare skin, highlighting a number of complaints, such as not having a dedicated cycle lane. japan

He now faces charges of exceeding the speed limit after the footage showed him driving at 124 km/h in a 40 km/h zone, police said. The 50-year-old doctor, who had said he "wanted people to understand the beauty of a Ferrari", was reported to police by angry YouTube users. The six-minute video was filmed using a camera positioned behind the driver. uniTed sTaTes

Sarkozy attacks Schengen accord French President Nicolas Sarkozy has threatened to withdraw from Europe's open border zone unless more is done to stop illegal immigration. He told supporters at a Paris campaign rally on Sunday that reform was the only way to avoid the "implosion" of Europe. He said that unless there is progress in the next 12 months, then France would

suspend participation in the Schengen agreement, which allows passport-free travel among 25 European nations. Illegal immigration is a key issue in the presidential election campaign. Last week Mr Sarkozy said there were too many foreigners in France – and pledged to halve the number of immigrants

arriving if he is re-elected later this year. Mr Sarkozy also called for a "Buy European Act" that would require governments to favour European-made products.

“Right to die” case Benefits Memorial to soldiers killed last week approved According to a statement by the Save The Children charity a quarter of a million children will be pushed into poverty due to the government’s overhaul of the child benefits system saying that they have a “blind spot”. The charity claims that the new Universal Credit scheme means that 150,000 single mothers could lose £68 a week (£3,500 per year).

Tony Nicklinson of Melksham, Wiltshire has won the right to have his case heard in respect of his right to have a doctor lawfully end his life. Mr Nicklinson, 57, has been the victim of “lockedin syndrome” following a stroke in 2005 while on a business trip to Athens. He can communicate only by using a computerised system that recognises blinks or tiny movements of his head and then types on a screen what he needs to say. He has indicated in this way that his life – as it is – is “dull, miserable, demeaning, undignified and intolerable. He will be asking the court to grant declarations that a doctor could intervene to end his “indignity”, with his consent and with him making the decision with

full mental capacity. The doctor would have a “common law defence of necessity” against any murder charges. The ruling came after Mr Justice Charles granted an application by the Ministry of Justice for the case to be “struck out” arguing that what Mr Nicklinson wants the court to decide should be a matter for Parliament. However Justice Charles ruled that he had an arguable case to go before a full court. The case will be heard later this year.

The Department for Work & Pensions however said “Save The Children are wrong to assert that lone parents will lose as a result of the Universal Credit. The truth is 600,000 lone parents will be better off. Under the scheme 80,000 more families, including single parents will be able to claim child support.”

Five of the six soldiers were from the 3rd battalion The Yorkshire Regiment and a special evensong service was held in their memory at the Minster in Halifax – the spiritual home to the regiment where a book of condolence was opened on Thursday. Gay “marriage” The Catholic church have read a letter penned by the Archbishop of Westminster to all of their 214 parishes on Sunday urging them to oppose the governments proposals to allow gay marriage within the church. The Catholic church hold the view that “marriage” should be between a man and a woman for the procreation of children and not between single sex couples. Many are saying that it is not necessary as there is already single sex civil partnerships legally performed since 2004 in other places although, under current laws, it cannot be called a marriage.

Javier Arenas, the Partido Popular's candidate in the Andalucia regional election on March 25th, refused to take part in Monday night's televised debate on Canal Sur because of the station's "lack of neutrality". Canal Sur has recently been condemned by the Electoral Commission for broadcasting an unauthorized demonstration outside the PP's regional headquarters. The Commission has also condemned the station for breaking electoral law by screening an image of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy during a report on a police operation against paedophilia.

The original copy of the 1812 Constitution of Cadiz, known affectionately as “La Pepa”, was returned to the city last week as part of the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of its signing. La Pepa was removed from the archives of Parliament in Madrid amid very tight security provided by the Central Brigade of Special Protections. The

Brigade's 300 members are used to escort valuable documents and paintings when being transported, as well important foreign visitors. La Pepa will be the key exhibit in the exhibition “En clave de Historia” at the Casa Pinilla in Cadiz before being returned to Madrid towards the end of the year. The

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Flavour of the month

Give it a rest, already

T

T

his month's flavour – and probably for several months to come – is the strike in one form or another. At least that's what the unions are planning. However, the poor turnout for Sunday's protest marches – which were seen as a trial run for the March 29th general strike – may have taken the wind out of their sails. The CC.OO (Workers Commissions) and the UGT (General Workers Union) claimed 400,000 to 500,000 people had turned out in both Madrid and Barcelona – figures the police knocked down to 30,000 and 14,000 respectively. You would have thought the unions might dispute such a huge knock down, but their silence on this score has been deafening. So maybe the police got it right. I checked out the Guardian and the BBC – always quick to crow about any left-wing victory in Spain – and found nothing, which means the police figures are the ones closest to the real turnout, give or take a thousand or two. I'm not knocking either the Guardian or the Beeb, having worked for both of them in my time, but they do tend to look at the Left anywhere in the world through rose-tinted glasses. n the other hand, progovernment pundits here are claiming that all the hullabaloo about a general strike is a ploy to divert attention from the regional election in Andalucia on March 25th, which the Partido Popular is tipped to win. The unions think that by concentrating on the iniquities of Mariano Rajoy's labour reform they'll frighten people into voting to keep the Socialist Party in power in Sevilla, as it has been since Andalucia became a decentralised region or autonomy on February 28th 1980. If they succeed, the Socialist dominance of Andalucia will then seriously rival the Franco dictatorship for longevity. But let's not count our chickens before they're hatched – although I'm already working on two different columns for the March 28th edition of The News. eanwhile, the decidedly promonarchy ABC newspaper is putting the unions under a microscope and releases interesting titbits every few days. A recent one was called “VIP trade union leaders” which tells how some former union leaders went on to sit on the boards of big companies, on which they had formerly represented their respective unions, and are now earning €366,000 a year before tax. Another little ABC snippet tells how

O

M

the unions had been taking advantage of idealistic young people to get them to work for nothing, long before the current government came up with the idea. The difference is that the government will keep up the youngsters' Social Security payments and let them keep collecting their dole payments or any other financial assistance they might have been receiving in lieu of dole. s for that ultra right-wing rag La Razon, it's seeing wild-eyed revolutionaries behind every bush and under every stone all over Spain. We'll soon be in the throes of another civil war, if this newspaper's warnings turn out to be right. I think it's fairly safe to say that small, radical antisystem groups are always quick to infiltrate peaceful protests anywhere in the world but at least here, I suspect, the students and the M-15 movement are much warier now that they've experienced the mayhem these groups can unleash. f the general strike goes ahead – as it probably will because the unions seem convinced they can force the government to drop or radically change the labour reform – I predict it will be an abysmal flop, especially if the PP wins in Andalucia. The Socialists will be in such a state of shock that they won't have the energy to protest about anything, let along a labour reform that they didn't have the guts to carry out when they should have.

A protest of my own

I

've been battling for months to cancel my contract with Vodafone and go over to the pay-as-you-go system, to no avail. One of their operators promised me about seven weeks ago to switch me over, then three weeks later another bill arrived. Enough is enough, I cried. I have since written a letter to their complaints’ department in Madrid telling them I have no intention of paying them a cent. By this time next week, they may have had me arrested but Kym says she'll ask the prison authorities to let me have a computer so I can carry on writing my column. (That will no doubt disappoint a few people out there!) However, seriously folks, our Help Line would be interested in hearing about any problems you may be having with this company with a view to taking the matter further (read that in an ominous tone of voice).

hey just don’t known when to leave it alone; the conspiracy theorists are at it again. Those far-right elements within the Partido Popular and other right-wing groups are still pretty miffed over the Socialist win in 2004 just days after the March 11th, 2004 train bombings in Madrid. These people still can’t believe that Spaniards wanted the PP out and wanted Spain out of the Iraqi War – it was as simple as that. But now the PP is back in power, and the country’s new top law enforcement officer is looking for ways to back in to the March 11th inquiry based on “new evidence” that may or may not exist.

A

ttorney General Eduardo Torres-Dulce (right) announced on March 4th that he had ordered the Madrid district attorney to look into a report that wreckage from one of the trains that was bombed in the Santa Eugenia station, was still being kept outside the capital. Apparently, Tafesa, the company that was ordered to clear and refurbish the carriages after the investigative and forensic evidence was concluded, still has some of the scrapped metal stored inside a warehouse at a train yard outside of Madrid. This information was made public earlier this month by the conservative website Libertad Digital, which has been a strong propaganda voice for those who believe that the bombings, which left 191 dead and more than 2,000 injured, was perpetrated by ETA and not Islamic extremists as the courts ruled. Complete with its report in which it quotes unnamed Tafesa workers questioning why they were told to store that wreckage, Libertad Digital also posted photos of what appears to be the same scraps of metal which the website compares with the original wreckage of the train.

T

afesa had a contract with Renfe to repair and refurbish the carriages after the Supreme Court gave the Spanish train operator the right to scrap the metal after all the forensic and expert studies were completed. But Torres-Dulce ignited a new row when he asked the Madrid district attorney to ensure that

there was no obstruction of justice, eight That years after the tragedy. announcement was quickly criticised by Pilar Manjón, president of the M-11 association of victims affected by terrorism and who presided over a wreath-laying ceremony on Sunday at Madrid’s main Atocha station. “You call yourself a fine legal specialist, but you seem to not know that the statute of limitations on obstruction of justice runs out after five years,” she said in a speech addressing Torres-Dulce. “This I know myself, and I am only a victim. Way to go, Mr Attorney General.” Manjón, who lost a son in the attack, said that “revolting manipulations of some fanatical conspiracy theorists” have caused enormous psychological damage to the victims and their families.

B

ut even among those families of victims, there are many who still lean toward the PP’s conspiracy theory. Ángeles Pedraza, of the Association of the Victims of Terrorism, and Ángeles Domínguez, of the Association for the Aid of Victims of 11-M – two organisations closely in line with the conservative party – are demanding that investigations continue because of the new supposed evidence found. The courts have long upheld that the explosives used to carry out the worst terrorist attack on Spanish soil was similar to devices used by terrorists in the Middle East, and far from what the Basque terrorist group ETA had ever used. A controversial Madrid court judge, who wanted to push the conspiracy issue through, was recently ordered to shut her own investigation focusing on the ETA and bomb theories because the case has already been settled.

R

egardless of the true findings of the March 11th 2004 bomb attacks, not everyone will be satisfied and, unfortunately, this spectre of speculation won’t go away. There are still a lot of people out there who believe George W. Bush and Dick Cheney had something to do with the World Trade Centre attacks in 2001 and, of course, the JFK second gunman theory is still being floated out there. But these brutal tragedies should not be used to further the political ambitions of a few fanatics. The 191 who died in 2004 train attacks should be allowed to rest in peace, and their families be afforded the necessary closure to carry on with their lives.

¿Cuándo? Recently I was struck once again at how easy it is to go wrong when looking up a word in a dictionary. Somebody wanted to say last week and came up with "la última semana". Well, la última semana does mean the last week. However, it is the last week in the sense that no more are coming after it. La última semana de Agosto - The last week of August La última semana del año - The last week of the year. If you want to speak about last week (the week that has just gone) use la semana pasada. La semana pasada fui a Málaga - Last week I went to Malaga. Last month is el mes pasado Last year - el año pasado For next week you can use la semana próxima but it is probably more common to use la semana que viene - literally the week which is coming. La semana que viene voy a ir al museo Picasso - Next week I'm going to go to the Picasso museum. El mes que viene - next month El año que viene - next year. We all know that tomorrow is mañana but do you know how to say the day after tomorrow. It's pasado mañana. Yesterday is ayer. The day before yesterday - anteayer. And there is word for last night which is anoche. Well, ya está. That's it Hasta la próxima - Until next time. Valerie Valerie runs the Centro Idiomas Language School in Coin. DAVID THE DOGMAN:Barking part 2 Barking at the postman The postman or any kind of regular deliveryman is regarded by your dog as an intruder and so it barks and is immediately rewarded by the postman going away. It thinks it has frightened off the intruder and done its duty. Talk to your postman and try to get him to cooperate. Tell him you will leave a tit-bit outside the door and ask him to push it through the letter-box before the letters. The tit-bit will be a better reward for your dog than chasing the postman away. Barking when telephone rings

the

If you shout (bark) at your dog when it barks at the telephone ringing, you are encouraging it to bark more. It feels there is danger if you react. Get a friend to phone you at several agreed times. When the phone rings do

not move and do not speak. After your friend has done this a few times your dog will no longer bark when the telephone rings. Barking from balconies When a dog barks from a balcony at someone passing by, it is simply asserting its dominance, firstly by looking down on humans and secondly by successfully telling them to shove off. As far as the dog is concerned, it is objecting to someone invading its territory. And even more pleasing, its barking is rewarded by the passerby walking away. Answer: ban the dog from the balcony. Barking deterrent Abistop is a French invention resulting from chemosensory research into the dog barking problem. It is attached to the dog´s collar and automatically

emits a small spray of citronella whenever the dog barks. Brief exposure to citronella immediately distracts dogs but does not cause them distress and even smells pleasant to humans. It is effective but expensive at 90€. A cheaper method might be a quick squirt of water from a plant spray bottle or putting a bit of food in front of the dog’s nose. It cannot eat and bark at the same time. David is on Talk Radio every Saturday from 10am - 11.am (Calahonda to Nerja) 88.9fm (Calahonda to Algeciras) 91.9fm

Marbella Smash and Grab The Jeans Factory Outlet Store on the Carretera de Cadiz, km 184.5, on the outskirts of Marbella was broken into in the early hours of last Friday morning. The 8mm plate glass window was smashed with what is believed to be an iron bar at 5.25am and three men equipped with large bags stole around 600 items of designer jeans and clothing including Tommy Hilfiger, Armani, and Dolce and Gabbana jeans(among other labels), Jack Jones Tshirts and Alejandro Jimenez party dresses

which have been valued at around €45,000. The whole snatch lasted less than three minutes from start to getaway. The owners of the store had to spend the day cleaning up after the smash and grab, although the store valiently stayed open for business and would appreciate our readers’ help in identifying any of these luxury goods that may be being offered at ridiculously low prices around markets or through bars and restaurants so that the perpetrators can be apprehended.

Cudeca’s most dedicated volunteers was selected to receive a makeover and a free pair of glasses as part of this event. Laura Haggis Sottas from Cudeca explained why she was chosen. “Gill is a wonderful help to Cudeca, giving up a huge amount of her time to assist our patients and to raise money. Without volunteers like Gill the charity could not run, so it’s great to be able to show our appreciation through a bit of pampering.”

Monday saw Commonwealth Day being celebrated And Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth sent this message to the citizens of the 54 members "One of the great benefits of today’s technologybased world is the range of opportunities it offers to understand and appreciate how others live: we can see, hear and enter into the experience of people in communities and circumstances far removed from our own. A remarkable insight we gain from such windows on the world is that, however different outward appearances may be, we share a great deal in common. Our circumstances and surroundings may vary enormously, for example in the food we eat and the clothes we wear, but we share one humanity, and this draws us all together. The joys of celebration and sympathy of sadness may be expressed differently but they are felt in the same way the world over. How we express our identities reveals both a

rich diversity and many common threads. Through the creative genius of artists – whether they be writers, actors, film-makers, dancers or musicians – we can see both the range of our cultures and the elements of our shared humanity.

The new song – sung by rising star Laura Wright – “Stronger As One” is an emotionally powerful anthem, the music and lyrics by Robert Hartshorne, contain a mixture of elements from around the Commonwealth reflecting its geography, history and values.

To support this theme, a special song has been composed for the Commonwealth, ‘Stronger as One’. There are any number of ways in which that single piece of music alone can be played or sung anywhere in the Commonwealth. And by sharing the same music with our own personal interpretations and contributions, the wonderful human attribute of imagination is nourished, and we gain insights of understanding and appreciation of others. The Commonwealth offers a pathway for this greater understanding and the opportunity to expand upon our shared experiences in a wider world. A world in which paths to mutual respect and common cause may

“Connecting Cultures”, our Commonwealth theme this year, encourages us to consider the special opportunities we have, as members of this unique gathering of nations, to celebrate an extraordinary cultural tapestry that reflects our many individual and collective identities. The Commonwealth treasures and respects this wealth of diversity. Connecting cultures is more, however, than observing others and the ways in which they express themselves. This year, our Commonwealth focus seeks to explore how we can share and strengthen the bond of Commonwealth

Recording of the song is now complete and is available to download from iTunes. On 12th March it had its first public airing at the Commonwealth Observance Service at Westminster Abbey on Commonwealth Day – the first official event to mark the start of the celebrations for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and of course, attended by Her Majesty. special effects, Trank offers a new take on the superhero formula, and one which has been given the thumbs up by many movie critics.

As they learn something about just how far their new found abilities can take them and how to use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control as their darker sides begin to take over. With an unknown, freshfaced cast and modest

Made in “found footage” style, a bit like The Blair Witch Project, this faux documentary chronicles how the three teenagers come into contact with a mysterious rock. They develop telekinetic powers, start off modestly but before you know it are

zooming through the sky and jumping off clouds. At first the boys find it fun to use their new found skills to play practical jokes and to have fun racing to the top of skyscrapers. But Andrew (DeHaan) has a troubled home life. His mother is dying, and his father bullies the boy. Andrew’s new powers

offer an easy way of getting his own back on what he sees as an uncaring world. So we head into the usual superhero territory – with great power comes great responsibility. The actors playing the three boys are authentic and the movie clips along at a brisk pace with never a dull moment.

London Calling - Best of British? One of the biggest events to happen in the UK this year is the Olympics, and Britain is home to some of the best musical artists and bands in the world – so why on earth is Blur the main act at the closing ceremony, along with New Order and The Specials? Seriously, is this the best the promoters can come up with? Please tell me I am not alone in thinking that The Stones, Jamiroquai, Adele or Sting would do a better job in representing their country – even Chas & Dave would be better at this point! Let’s go back to 1994 when Blur hit the charts with Parklife, which was quite a catchy little tune, but the same year Oasis’s debut album “Definitely Maybe” was far better. The fact is

when it comes to Brit Pop Blur and Oasis have always been rivals, but anyone with ears knows that Oasis is the better band. Many people do not like the Gallagher brothers, and I understand that, but you can’t deny that their music is excellent, it’s well crafted and structured. Only true Blur fans will know that Blur released two albums, prior to their success with Parklife, so they have been going three years longer than Oasis and, in my opinion, aren’t half as good.

If you think back there are only three Blur albums that were successful: Parklife, The Great Escape and 13 – and out of these three there are probably two decent tracks on each one. This said, if you heard “Coffee and TV” on the radio, you’d probably turn it off, the only thing that made that track great was the video with the cute milk cartons – so, “13” isn’t really a great album at all. Now, if you think about Oasis albums, just “Definitely Maybe” alone, the whole album is packed with classic songs – even Coca Cola are using one of the songs from that album for an ad campaign. After “13” Blur went quiet for a while, then Albarn came up with “Gorillaz” – they were ok, had one or two hits, but were by no means

memorable. It’s not like animated bands are that much of a novelty, personally I think “The Arches” – “Sugar” was far better than any of the “Gorillaz” work. London hosting this year’s Olympics gives Britain the perfect opportunity to show the world, what great athletes and talent they have, not palm us off with some band that broke up a decade ago and that aren’t very good. So why aren’t the best British bands fighting to represent their country? Is it because they have doubts about how the UK will pull off this event? My question is, why is this closing ceremony called “Best of British”, when it’s more like “Dregs of British”? Written by Abigail Tyler

unique there had been nothing like it before – or in the 40 years since. Many people don’t like musicals and I can understand why. People walking down the street and breaking into soppy love songs at the drop of a hat, and dancing in inappropriate places can be rather irritating. Cabaret has nothing like this. Every song (with the exception of one) is sung as a performance on the stage of the Kit Kat Club where our protagonist, Sally Bowles, works. he film is, of course, TChristopher loosely based on the Isherwood play “I am a Camera”, set in prewar Berlin. I say loosely based because the character Sally Bowles was actually English and had a terrible singing voice, so as you can imagine, the casting of Liza Minnelli in the part changed all that. he opening number TEmcee introduces us to the (Joel Grey) welcoming us to the club ‘Willkommen’ but far from feeling welcomed, the number has a very sinister feel about it and the chorus girls are nothing short of threatening and intimidating. he Nazis’ violent rise is a Tundercurrent powerful, ever-present in the film. Though explicit evidence of their actions is only sporadically presented, their progress can be tracked through the characters’ changing actions and attitudes. Although this is not, and was never meant to be, a horror film, I must say it has one of the most chilling scenes I have ever witnessed in a movie. On a sunny day, whilst people are enjoying a drink in a beer garden, a young boy stands and begins to sing. This is the only number not performed in the club. He is a blond

boy singing what seems to be an innocent lyrical song about the beauties of nature, but as the camera pans down, we see he is dressed in the brown uniform of the Hitler Youth. The song escalated into the strident “Tomorrow belongs to me” with the majority of the drinkers standing and joining in and the boy giving the Nazi salute. am not going to rattle on Itheabout the plot as without background, it is not a strong story. The story starts with Sally singing at the club, and ends with her there, but the strength of the story is because of its circumstances. A lot does happen though and there are a couple of sub-plots thrown in. n the beginning of the film, IareNational Socialist members sometimes harassed and even kicked out of the Kit Kat Klub, but the final shot of the film shows the cabaret’s audience is dominated by Nazi party members. here were memorable TMichael performances by Liza, York and especially Joel Grey, who had reprised his role from the stage production. The film was directed by choreographer and dancer Bob Fosse and any fan of his would instantly recognise his signature movements on stage. was interested to learn that Ihappy Ms Minnelli, who was not with the wardrobe department choices, hunted vintage and goodwill stores for the wonderful costumes worn by Sally Bowles. o, unique indeed. A Swithmulti-layered musical, timeless unforgettable numbers from Ebb and Kander, with a socio/political root! It doesn’t get much more different than that .. and of course as a period piece, it will never date.

Slow down Aries and give yourself a moment to look around at what you have achieved so far, you will find that others are very interested in helping you to succeed, so allow them the time to help you and let them know that you appreciate all their efforts and hard work. Finances are the focus right now and you will be looking at many ways to boost the coffers. Surrounding yourself with those who have a positive attitude will help you remain on the ball.

Even if others don’t understand your motives the key is to go ahead with your plans anyway and it is the actions that will capture the attention of others. This is your chance to stand tall and appear different so be willing to take a chance on something if need be. Be careful with contracts and agreements making sure that you check all the facts. A relationship is likely to enter a new phase of growth and involvement.

At the start of the week there can be challenging events or actions that can cause you to want to retreat or to turn away from the progress you are currently making – do not allow your fears or insecurities to take hold. Your sensitivity is heightened at the moment surrounding matters of the home and family, whether there are relationship issues or you are working on fixing up your physical dwelling. Be kind to yourself this week. This is not going to be an average time for you but one that gives you a tremendous opportunity for you to use your free thinking skills to take a chance on a new idea. Expect to be challenged but dig your heels in and hold your own. Your heart and mind are on the same page and if there is something that you want this is a great time to go ahead and get it. Your energy is stabilising and others will welcome the kind of distraction you bring to their lives. Are you going to live by your own standards or try to adapt to the everchanging standards of others – this is the big question this week. Others may not like what you have to say, but as long as it is the truth eventually they will respect you for having the courage to say it. Your leadership skills have a chance to blossom and all eyes and attention will be focused on you as others look to you to light the way. Helping and assisting others will bring rewards. One of your greatest wishes and hopes for the future is about to come true and the doors of opportunity are being flung wide open for you. The negativity that has been in your life has a chance to release allowing you to feel a sense of inner freedom that you haven’t felt for years. Some foes become friends, there is a U turn happening in some areas of your life. You are being given a break Virgo, a chance for some harmony in your life.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Spring has sprung and we can sit outside again, so why not try this authentic Sicilian pasta dish, and turn inexpensive fresh sardines and store cupboard ingredients into this simple springtime treat.

Pasta con le sarde (pasta with sardines) Ingredients:

Serves 8

• 1 handful fresh, wild fennel, roughly

• 2 tbsp pine nuts • 2 pinches

chopped (use fennel fronds as an alternative) • 10 tbsp olive oil • 1 brown onion, finely chopped • 5 anchovy fillets in oil • 1 kg/2lb 4oz fresh sardines, scaled, cleaned and filleted • 2 tbsp tomato purée • 2 tsp currants

saffron thread • 800g/1lb 12oz bucatini pasta (or spaghetti) • 2 tbsp breadcrumbs • salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions 1. Bring a large pan of water to boil, add the chopped fennel and boil for 20 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, heat eight tablespoons of the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onions and fry for five minutes until softened and translucent then stir in the anchovy fillets and fry gently for 3-4 minutes until they have broken down. 3. Add half the sardines, the tomato purée and a couple of ladlefuls of water from the fennel pan. Stir for a few minutes then add the currants, the pine nuts and saffron. Cook gently for 15 minutes. 4. When the fennel is cooked, drain and reserve the cooking water. Add the fennel pieces to the sardine mixture and a splash more fennel water

to slacken the mixture to a thick sauce consistency. Add the rest of the sardine fillets and cook for a further 10 minutes, breaking up the fillets a little. 5. Meanwhile, bring the reserved fennel water back to the boil. Add plenty of salt and top up with boiling water if necessary then add the bucatini and cook according to packet instructions. While the pasta is cooking, fry the breadcrumbs with the remaining olive oil over a medium-high heat until golden-brown and crunchy. 6. Drain the pasta and mix with the sardine sauce then leave it to rest for 10 minutes. To serve, spoon the pasta on to warm serving plates and sprinkle with the breadcrumbs.

Changing and modifying your actions and efforts so you can enjoy the harvest of your endeavours is where your attention is right now. It is like a craftsman that keeps building even though there may not be enough customers at the moment. The key is to be prepared for future demands; this is all about bringing your resources September 23rd - together so that you are not following paths that lead to dead ends. SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

There may be extremely powerful personal temptations coming your way but also Scorpio there is a strong spirit within you that will not allow you to go down easy or take or take life lightly. As a result you make a big splash and an unforgettable impact, to all that walk across your path. Others count on you for that very quality, the intensity and penetrating purpose that you exude. You will be feeling restless this week.

SAGITTARIUS You are in a place of stillness this week and the radiance that you are giving out will

calm those around you down who could be in a panic. While everybody else is nervous and jumpy it is your job to be the beacon that lights the way for others to follow. It is the inner peace within you that is the soothing balm that others want November 22nd - and need so badly for themselves. So on this note don’t let your energy fall on stony December 21st ground be discriminate with who really needs you.

CAPRICORN You have been climbing your entire life and on this climb you have reached certain

resting places at points where you witness and relish the view and the distance you have travelled. At the moment though it does appear as though things are beyond your immediate ability to control and in one way that gives you the freedom to be December 22nd - as creative and expressive as possible. You are in the place of creative genius and January 19th we can expect unpredictable things from you.

AQUARIUS

PISCES

February 19th March 20th

A little extra communication to loved ones can go a very long way this week, do not assume that they know the details or understand why you have certain things planned. Later in the week, leave the seriousness behind you and go out and have some fun. By the weekend it will feel as if you are being lifted right up and out of your shoes and anything is possible, all you have to do is trust the tide and let it take you to a sandy shore.

Be careful about making minor problems much bigger than they really are, your initial instincts will be correct but your thoughts may then get the better of you this week. It is important for you to get to the heart of the matter and know what others really think and feel. Words and promises in the past have disappeared before, take your time and be in the moment in any situation. Times are changing so be patient, you need a trusted ground to stand on and a solid place to make your dreams real – this takes time.

QUIRKY AS EVER IN HER DRESS SENSE

Five-year-old Shiloh steals the scene while mum Angelina looks on elegant as ever … but seven-year-old Zahara remains the girlie one The Jolie/Pitt family always seem to be properly kitted out and Tuesday remained the same with five-year-old daughter Shiloh wearing a T-shirt with a jaunty tuxedo print arriving at LAX airport for a flight to France with her mother Angelina Jolie and seven-year-old sister Zahara. The differences between the two girls was remarkable with Shiloh’s short cropped hair, trainers and cargo pants while Zahara sported her blue braided hair that has recently become one of her favourites, a leopard print top and knee high boots over jeans. The whole Jolie/Pitt family had

been in New Orleans over the weekend helping to rebuild the town Brad Pitt fell in love with while filming “Interview with a vampire” with Tom Cruise in 1994. They own a property in the town’s French Quarter. Pitt has been helping rebuild the town following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and on Saturday evening he and comedienne Ellen de Generis hosted the Make It Right foundation’s big fundraiser in the city. The sold-out gala saw up to 1,200 guests attending who had paid between $1000 and $2,500 each to attend the dinner prepared by New Orleans

celebrity chefs John Besh and Emeril Lagasse plus entertainment by such stars as Rhianna, Dr. John, Seal and Cheryl Crow. “Each time I come back to New Orleans and drive over that bridge, I get this swell of joy,” Pitt told Reuters, his eyes going watery. “It means a lot to me to watch that neighbourhood take shape.” Pitt estimated the events and sponsorships would raise $4 million for Make it Right, which aims to build 150 homes in the Lower Ninth Ward and has pulled in about $30 million since its founding four years ago. The Brazilian student said in an interview with Heat magazine: “I’ve always felt like I had a woman inside of me,

always. But I used to hide it. I’ve always liked make-up, treatments and other womanly things, and I was 18 when I first started experimenting. But early this year I told my best friend Andrea how I was really feeling. She encouraged me. When I came back to the UK I started wearing my friends’ clothes first, then I began shopping for them. People in the shops were surprisingly normal about it. Now I go out with a transvestite I made friends with. She’s very glam. We go to straight clubs and get a lot of attention.”

Of alter ego Rebekah he said: “She likes to pay her own way and not have doors opened for her. She’s flirty, but would never go home with someone on the first date. She’s very shorttempered, too! She’s much madder than I could ever be – once, she tried to take her high heel and throw it in a man’s face.”

However, he added that he is still worried about how his family will react to his latest news.

Help when you need it most Very few people, including the locals would know what to do in the event of a death of a friend or family. Living in Spain the problems seem even bigger, and even the most fluent of expats would struggle with the words needed to deal with the situation. Funeral Care Spain was originally formed directly from such an experience. During and after the death of a close family member Neal and Tracie were amazed and saddened at the lies and myths they

were told by professional people. Since then they have moved from strength to strength joining forces with a national Spanish funeral director to give a clear, simple and straightforward service to those who find themselves in a time of need. Their website www.funeralspain.com gives clear information, and their personal knowledge of what to do and where to go is unrivalled. Prices are always fixed and in writing, giving those left behind

physiological conditions that produce chronic disease, like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, regardless of a person’s weight or diet. To avoid that fate, they said, keep moving, even if in small doses.

Keep moving To learn more about how inactivity affects disease risk, researchers at the University of Missouri persuaded a group of healthy, active young adults to stop moving around so much. It’s known that sedentary people are at increased risk of developing heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, but the reasons haven’t been fully understood. The team asked a group of volunteers to halve the number of steps they took each day to determine whether this would affect the body’s ability to control blood sugar levels. They were fitted with glucose monitoring devices, and pedometers to track how many steps they took and told to live normally for three days, during which they averaged 10,000 steps a day. During this time, the volunteers’ blood sugar did not spike after they ate. Later they were told to cut back their step counts to below 5,000 a day for the next three days. They stopped exercising, took the lift, not the stairs, and became, essentially, typical American adults. During these three days, their blood sugar levels spiked significantly after meals. The peaks also grew slightly with each successive day. Spikes during inactivity are natural, because unused muscles need less fuel and so draw less sugar from the blood. The condition is more serious when it becomes the body’s default condition. The researchers said inactivity creates the

comfort and security when they need it the most. A basic cremation package can start at less than 2,500 euros. As a national provider, Funeral Care Spain can deal with insurance companies, arrange repatriation if required and yet still give a personal service making the end product unique to every situation. “Nothing is impossible” says Tracie, “but in the same way we always respect the wishes of our customers. We can provide full ceremonies or

pampered and happy – and yes, they do speak English!

Just a few notes to let you have some happy news from the shelter.

A while ago an Argentinian couple came to us with their husky Kiara. Due to the economic crisis this couple couldn’t stay in Spain any longer and had to go back to Argentina. The dog couldn’t go with them and they were devastated. We took the dog in and were sorry to see that she was miserable and devastated too. It really broke our hearts. It was so sad to look at her. She was finally adopted by a lady who brought her back after one week, complaining that the dog was barking all the time. Of course everybody was very disappointed.

Dear Friends Supporters,

Many of you will have met the two little dogs that came to us from Huelva. They were at the shelter for almost one year and were a delightful duo: Chiciwine and Eddie. Unfortunately, being already a bit advanced in age, it was difficult to have them adopted, until a guest of one of our members saw them and fell in love with them. There was one snag, however, the guest lived in the UK. She went back to her country but couldn’t forget the pair. To cut a long story short, the two are now living in the UK and are very

But now the happy news: Kiara was adopted again and

this time it is love all around. The new owner is thrilled to have her and needless to say Kiara is a very happy dog now. We are pleased to inform you that during the early part of March 2012 another meeting will take place with the Mayor of Mijas and his team. Plans will be handed over of our proposal for the new shelter. The plans are being made by a firm of architects who have offered their services free of charge, for which we naturally are very grateful. We will keep you informed about this project. That’s it for now. We will hopefully see many of you during the AGM on the 24th of March 2012!

Two visitors went into the main Tourist Office in Malaga city centre and asked for directions to the English Cemetery. They were told that no such place existed! This ignorance in an official information office is astounding. The Anglican Church of St. George was founded in 1830 and has operated ever since. It is a listed historical site containing the graves of a number of famous expatriates of the last two centuries. It is also a War Grave cemetery for Air Force and Navy servicemen who died in World War II.

Pioneer 10 Deep Space Probe 40 years ago today saw the beginning of the longest journey in history when NASA launched its first deep space exploration probe Pioneer 10 towards Jupiter.

B

ack in March 1972 the Apollo moon missions were coming to an end with only Apollo 16 and finally Apollo 17 to finish off the program and now NASA were looking for a new goal to achieve. So it was decided to launch two interplanetary probes Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 toward Jupiter and Saturn.

O

ne of the main problems about sending a spacecraft to the outer planets is having to cross the asteroid belt, a band between Mars and Jupiter containing millions of pieces of rock and ice ranging in size from grains of sand up to 1000km. Many of the smaller asteroids had not been discovered at the time and so it was impossible to predict exactly their position. Collision with even a tiny asteroid would destroy the spacecraft and so between July 1972 and February 1973 NASA collectively held its breath as Pioneer 10 crossed the asteroid belt.

I

Guided tours take place regularly and on Remembrance Sunday the wreath-laying service is synchronised with that at the Cenotaph in London – the British Consul representing the Queen here in Malaga. There is a full choral high church service every Sunday at 11am and a said communion on Wednesdays at 10.30am. The congregation comes from a wide area – from Periana and Torre del Mar in the east and Coin and Mijas Costa in the west.

The church enjoys an active social life ranging from carol services and seasonal fairs to concerts and photographic exhibitions. The church is situated at 1, Avenida de Pries by the traffic lights at the junction with Paseo de Reding near the bullring in Malaga City. Beside the imposing iron gates is the gatehouse with its gift shop. St George’s is an English village church and garden graveyard on a main street in the centre of Malaga. It is part of the City’s own history!

t would be fairly plain sailing from now on as Pioneer 10 continued on its lonely journey at a speed of 32,000 mph toward Jupiter. It was now the fastest man made object ever built. Back in 1972, computing power was still in its infancy and Pioneer 10 was capable of only 6,000 bytes of memory and data storage that was transmitted back to Earth via a 150W transmitter. Even the most basic of today’s mobile phones is capable of many hundreds of times more power than that!

B

ut even with its limited power Pioneer 10 still carried up to 12 separate scientific instruments on board designed to carry out a whole array of scientific measurements of Jupiter and its atmosphere. Finally on December 4th 1973 Pioneer 10 made its closest approach to Jupiter at a distance of 130,000km and began sending back incredible close up pictures of the giant planet and some of its 64 moons.

B

ut Pioneer 10 was not designed to stay in orbit around Jupiter and so after its one and only close fly-by it continued on its journey out of the solar system to who knows where? On board is a 6 inch X 9 inch gold plaque showing a naked man and woman plus directions to its place of origin in the hope that at some time in the future some intelligent life

form happens to find it and decides to contact us. Feminists at the time complained that it was unfair to show only the male waving and not the female too.

P

ioneer 10 continued on its one way journey crossing the orbit of Saturn in 1976 and the orbit of Uranus in 1979. It eventually crossed the orbit of Neptune in 1983 effectively meaning that it had now left our solar system and crossed into interstellar space. It has no more fuel on board and continues to travel purely because there is no resistance in space to cause it to slow down or stop.

C

ommunication with Pioneer 10 was finally lost on January 23rd 2003 when it was 12 billion km from the Earth, which is equal to 80 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun. Several attempts were made to make contact with Pioneer 10 but the final attempt on March 4th 2006 proved that there was not sufficient sunlight reaching it any longer to power the solar cells and so the program was officially closed down.

A

s of February 2012 Pioneer 10 is travelling at 12km per second and is headed in the general direction of the star Aldebaran that is 68 light years away. At its current speed it is expected that it will reach Aldebaran in about two million years.

P

ioneer 11, that had been launched the following year in 1973, had also completed its journey but to Saturn this time and it too was also left to continue flying out of the solar system into uncharted space. It is flying in roughly the opposite direction as Pioneer 10, and as Buzz Lightyear might say, ‘to infinity and beyond!’

Auction of a Automotive Masterpiece One of the world’s rarest supercars will go under the auctioneer’s hammer at Aston Barclay Group’s Chelmsford centre later this month. The Group has been called upon to auction a Spyker C8 Spyder which sells for more than £195,000 when new. Registered in 2007, this car is number 175 of 250 ever built, it has covered less than 5,000 miles, is capable of 0-62mph in little over four seconds and has a 190mph top speed. The auction is at 10.30am on March 21st.

e good and the just plain ugly from Geneva Steve Rider to front BTCC coverage ITV Sport has confirmed that Steve Rider and Louise Goodman will continue to present its extensive coverage of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship in 2012. Rider has been one of television’s most respected sports ‘anchormen’ since the Eighties while Goodman has, during the past 15 years, also become a hugely popular face among millions of viewers watching motor sport on TV in the UK. Both will front the ITV4 channel’s mammoth live Sunday broadcasts from all ten of the BTCC’s race events in 2012 – these run from around 11.00am-6.00pm. Rider’s ITV BTCC work does not clash with his deal to provide features for Sky’s Formula 1 TV coverage. Meanwhile Goodman’s ITV role at BTCC events will extend to paddock, pit lane and grid interviews.

Rider, a long-time fan of the BTCC and who helped the championship first secure regular mainstream TV coverage via the BBC’s flagship sports show Grandstand in the Eighties, is as excited as ever about the forthcoming season which begins at the world-famous Brands Hatch circuit in Kent on the weekend of 31st March – 1st April. He commented: “The viewers not only have a wide variety of cars to look forward to but also, in 2012, the increased spectacle that the latest next generation Touring Car regulations will bring with them turbocharged engines and flaming exhausts.

Justin Rose tames the Blue Monster England's Justin Rose claimed a fourth

USPGA Tour win at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral, in Florida.

The Hampshire golfer who now resides in Florida, was three shots back at the start of play, trailing overnight leader Bubba Watson. But, with Watson fading, and world number one Rory McIlroy's late charge falling short and Tiger Woods retiring with an Achilles injury, Rose was able to keep his nerve and claim his title.

matches Tony Jacklin and Luke Donald's four

A final round two-under 70 was enough to win by a shot from Watson, who missed a 10-foot birdie putt at 18. That followed a fantastic recovery from a wayward drive down the last by Watson, from almost the same spot where Rose had bogeyed to open the door for the American 15 minutes earlier.

"There's been a lot of hard work going on in my game," said Rose. "And days like this make it all worthwhile. "I really enjoyed playing with Bubba Watson for three days. And going out one group ahead of the leaders is never a bad thing. "But the two shots he hit into 18 had me sweating." Rose's victory

wins on American soil, meaning that Sir Nick Faldo, with nine titles, is the only Englishman who can boast more successes in the United States.

Watson had been three clear when he resumed but, after a twoputt birdie on the first, he began to struggle. The American had three bogeys in a row from the third – a hole which earlier saw Sergio Garcia put four balls in the water and take 12 – as he turned in a damaging outward 39. England’s Luke Justin and caddy Mark Fulcher check yardages Donald finished on 12-

under in a tie for sixth – his first Top 10 finish of the year. It was a day that left little doubt about Rory McIlroy's spot atop the world rankings. Just like Woods in previous years, McIlroy showed he could never be counted out with an array of splendid shots, most of them from precarious spots in the bunker and

threatened to win. McIlroy, officially the world's best player after winning the Honda Classic, put himself in contention for a second successive victory – but had to settle in the end for a five-under 67. That earned him a tie for third as he now takes three weeks off to prepare for Augusta, the first major of the season.

Britain’s golden girls Spring arrives at e Oval Great Britain's women's relay team won gold in the 4x400m in thrilling style on the final day of the World Indoor Championships in Turkey. Shana Cox, Nicola Sanders, Christine Ohuruogu and Perri Shakes-Drayton set a world-best three minutes 28.76 seconds to beat the United States.

Shara Proctor , Andrew Osagie and Holly Bleasdale won bronze medals in the

long jump, 800m and pole vault respectively. That surpasses their previous highest medal haul of seven, set in Birmingham in 2003. Ohuruogu, the 2008 Olympic 400m champion, received the baton on the third leg while in third position but superbly made

impressively held off individual World Indoor champion Sanya RichardsRoss in the final leg, lunging for the line to claim top spot ahead of the American. Russia finished third. Yamile Aldama won gold in the triple jump, but Mo Farah missed out on a medal in the 3,000m. There was controversy in the men's 4x400m relay as the GB team of Conrad Williams, Nigel Levine, Michael Bingham and Richard Buck were promoted to a gold medal after the United States were disqualified, only for that decision to be reversed on appeal. The Americans crossed the line in 3:03.94, ahead of GB in 3:04.72. Trinidad and Tobago were third.

Combined Colleges vs Costa del Sol Result: CC 313/6 – CDS 174/9, CC won by 139 runs

Last weekend the trees around The Oval were just beginning to bud but this Sunday saw them in full bloom. Spring is indeed here and so too is the Southern Cricket league with Combined Colleges facing Costa del Sol in their first league match of the new season. CC won the toss and put CDS into the field who quickly took the first wicket after just five overs. But CC steadied themselves and the next three established the team on the score board with Nushan making 50, Azard 62 and Ash 51 to see their side to 179 at lunch. Phill stepped up to bowl for CDS after his long awaited return and took two wickets for 62 runs in his seven overs. With Tony, Imty,

Morly and Jody each taking a wicket a piece and Mark’s outstanding performance behind the stumps, CC were eventually out for 313/6 in their 35 overs. Needing 314 to win, a formidable target at any level, CDS set out to show they were up to the challenge but it was not to be. The captain being the first to go, LBW by Nushan who went on to take four more wickets as CDS floundered, the top order taking too many

chances and making too many mistakes except for the number two, Rob, who stayed the course making 40 in 26 overs before falling LBW as well. Nushan in the end taking five for 42 in his seven overs. The middle and lower order however showed them how it’s done with Craig at number six making 39 before being run out and Phill making 21*. CDS 174/9 after 35 overs at least denying CC the bonus point for not bowling out the whole team. If you would like to play, umpire, sponsor or just come and watch you are more than welcome to email Jody van der Westhuizen at jodyvdw@gmail.com for more information. Next Sunday: Gibraltar vs Malaga XI.

Defiant Peterson blasts Khan ahead of rematch Lamont Peterson has slammed Amir Khan for suggesting he can't raise his game for their world title rematch. Wiggins wins Paris-Nice

Rondon Cements England Malaga's Euro Spot show true

Bradley Wiggins claimed arguably the biggest road race success of his career when winning Paris-Nice on Sunday. The Team Sky rider had shown outstanding form throughout the eight-stage race and he rounded it off in perfect style with a hard fought victory in the concluding 9.6 kilometres individual time trial up the Col d’Eze. That helped him top the overall standings by from eight seconds Dutchman Lieuwe Westra

After two wins in a row Malaga started the game much more confidently than of late. Levante set up ultra defensive and it was up to Malaga to break them down. Rondon had a couple of half chances heading wide and Isco and Carzola had shots go wide, and it was all Malaga, with the visitors content to defend. Joaquin forced ex-Malaga player Manua to make a great save before half time and a Rondon header was just hooked over by Cabral. Malaga's richly deserved goal came soon into the second half, a Joaquin free kick was met by Rondon who flicked the ball into the Levante net, although the

in 1967. Wiggo had this to say: “I’m pleased more for everyone else rather than myself after all the hard work the boys have put in this week. Ultimately it fell on my shoulders to finish the job off and I’m just made up that I was able to do that. “It’s massive to win this race. I really think about things like that but I’ve tried not to think too much about it in the last few days. To follow in Tom Simpson’s footsteps and become the second British rider to win

Paris-Nice is something special. “I’d probably say it’s one of my biggest wins – as was the Criterium du Dauphiné – and to have both those on my palmarès is a huge honour.” Report and photo courtesy of www.teamsky.com

Interim head coach Stuart Lancaster hailed the performance of his young England side after they shocked World Cup finalists France in Paris at the weekend. It was England’s first win in the French capital since 2008, prompting Lancaster to praise the ‘character’ of his new-look side. Despite slipping to defeat against Wales at Twickenham two weeks ago, Lancaster’s side became the first England side ever to win three away games in the Championship as tries from Manu Tuilagi, Ben Foden and Tom Croft gave them a thrilling 24-22 victory in Paris. A last minute drop goal attempt falling just short for France."It's fantastic to win here with a side so young and inexperienced," said Lancaster.

last touch could have come off Levante player Ghezzal. The goal forced Levante to give up their defensive tactics, Koné nearly finished from close range but it was Malaga who should have doubled their lead on numerous occasions, Isco had a great run only for the shot to be saved by Manua, Rondon headed over and Seba shot just wide. At the death, El Zhar shot just over for Levante to give Malaga a fright but the game ended with the right result, and another great three points to keep Malaga in the hunt. Report by Scott Forbes

Tiger Woods' hopes of playing at the Masters in April have been boosted by news that his Achilles injury is not as bad as first feared. The 36-year-old pulled out of the final round of WGCCadillac Championship at the weekend with the same injury that forced him to miss part of last year. However, following a scan, Woods said on Twitter: "Got good news from doctor. Only mild strain of left Achilles. Can resume hitting balls late in week and hopeful for (Bay Hill)next week."

BOA 'cautiously optimistic' after drugs ban hearing The British Olympic Association is "cautiously optimistic" after a hearing on Monday to decide if its lifetime bans for drug cheats breach the world anti-doping code. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) heard arguments from the BOA and the World Anti-Doping Administration (WADA), which opposes lifetime bans. If the BOA's bans are lifted, sprinter Dwain Chambers is among those affected who could compete at London 2012. A verdict may not emerge for a month. Following Monday's hearing, BOA chairman Lord Moynihan told reporters: "It was a good day, all the arguments were put really strongly. The voice of the athletes was definitely heard and we now wait and see.”
