This week we have had one of our cats in the Veterinary’s. He is 15years-old and has been a very healthy big cat since he was born but, recently he had lost an awful lot of weight and suddenly turned very yellow. In a panic I got him to the vet’s, he was stabilised and came home. Then last Thursday at 1am he was yelling his head oﬀ so, downstairs I went and found him sprawled on the floor unable to stand or move his back legs. He had suﬀered an embolism but, because I managed to get him to my vet’s quick enough, he has regained the use of his legs, is much better and is coming home tomorrow. Thank God for vets that get out of their beds at stupid o’clock to look after our pets. Thanks to Paqui Torrico at the Pet Centro Veterinary Clinic in the road to the side of the municipal market in Alhaurin el Grande (tel: 952 491 655 if you need a great vet and, what’s more her veterinary nurse Charo speaks very good English!).

Trial run for general strike disappointing The protest marches called by the unions in some 60 cities across the country on Sunday against the government's labour reforms brought out disappointingly low numbers. The organisers – the Workers Commissions and the UGT (General Workers Union) – claimed that more than 400,000 had turned out in both Madrid and Barcelona. The police put the numbers much lower – 30,000 in Madrid and 14,000 in Barcelona. According to newspaper reports on Monday, the final figures showed that around 150,000 people had joined the strike. Some observers said the low numbers could be

attributed to the fact that the unions had called the strike for March 11th – the eighth anniversary of the Madrid train bombings, when there were several commemorative acts being planned. The unions justified their choice of date, saying Sunday the 18th is the day before Father's Day on the 19th which is a holiday in many parts of Spain, and the following Sunday, the 26th, is too close the general strike called for March 29th.

If the general strike goes ahead, it will be the sixth since the return to democracy and the first one called before a new government has completed its first 100 days. On that day, the Rajoy government will have been in power 98

days. The calling of the strike has been criticised in many quarters, not just the government, on the grounds that the country is in no mood for a general strike. However, the unions seem determined to force the government to back

The anticyclone that has been raising temperatures across Spain and keeping the rains away will move on by late Thursday or Friday and make way for three or four days of much needed rain to the north of the country, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

Until then, temperatures in some parts of the south will reach 30º, although minimum temperatures are expected to remain just below 10º in the south and much lower in the north. Once the anticyclone moves on, temperatures should be the average ones for this time of the year, the weathermen say. Meanwhile, the brotherhoods involved in the Easter processions want to know if they will be rained off again this year. The weathermen say they needn't worry because for the moment it looks as if the first half of April will continue to be dry.

Cyclists stage naked safety protest

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Syria of laying landmines near its borders with Lebanon and Turkey, along routes used by refugees to escape the violence. The New-York based group Human Rights Watch called on Syria to immediately cease laying the mines, calling them "militarily ineffective" weapons that will mostly kill and injure civilians for years to come. HRW said a 28-year-old former Syrian Army deminer had reported that he and some friends removed around 300 mines from the Hasanieih area in early March, along routes

suspend participation in the Schengen agreement, which allows passport-free travel among 25 European nations. Illegal immigration is a key issue in the presidential election campaign. Last week Mr Sarkozy said there were too many foreigners in France – and pledged to halve the number of immigrants

arriving if he is re-elected later this year. Mr Sarkozy also called for a "Buy European Act" that would require governments to favour European-made products.

“Right to die” case Benefits Memorial to soldiers killed last week approved According to a statement by the Save The Children charity a quarter of a million children will be pushed into poverty due to the government’s overhaul of the child benefits system saying that they have a “blind spot”. Tony Nicklinson of Melksham, Wiltshire has won the right to have his case heard in respect of his right to have a doctor lawfully end his life. Mr Nicklinson, 57, has been the victim of “lockedin syndrome” following a stroke in 2005 while on a business trip to Athens. He can communicate only by using a computerised system that recognises blinks or tiny movements of his head and then types on a screen what he needs to say. He has indicated in this way that his life – as it is – is “dull, miserable, demeaning, undignified and intolerable. He will be asking the court to grant declarations that a doctor could intervene to end his “indignity”, with his consent and with him making the decision with

full mental capacity. The doctor would have a “common law defence of necessity” against any murder charges. The ruling came after Mr Justice Charles granted an application by the Ministry of Justice for the case to be “struck out” arguing that what Mr Nicklinson wants the court to decide should be a matter for Parliament. However Justice Charles ruled that he had an arguable case to go before a full court.The case will be heard later this year.

Gay “marriage” The Catholic church have read a letter penned by the Archbishop of Westminster to all of their 214 parishes on Sunday urging them to oppose the governments proposals to allow gay marriage within the church. The original copy of the 1812 Constitution of Cadiz, known affectionately as “La Pepa”, was returned to the city last week as part of the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of its signing. La Pepa was removed from the archives of Parliament in Madrid amid very tight security provided by the Central Brigade of Special Protections. The

Give it a rest, already

his month's flavour – and probably for several months to come – is the strike in one form or another. At least that's what the unions are planning. However, the poor turnout for Sunday's protest marches – which were seen as a trial run for the March 29th general strike – may have taken the wind out of their sails. The CC.OO (Workers Commissions) and the UGT (General Workers Union) claimed 400,000 to 500,000 people had turned out in both Madrid and Barcelona – figures the police knocked down to 30,000 and 14,000 respectively. You would have thought the unions might dispute such a huge knock down, but their silence on this score has been deafening. So maybe the police got it right. I checked out the Guardian and the BBC – always quick to crow about any left-wing victory in Spain – and found nothing, which means the police figures are the ones closest to the real turnout, give or take a thousand or two. I'm not knocking either the Guardian or the Beeb, having worked for both of them in my time, but they do tend to look at the Left anywhere in the world through rose-tinted glasses. n the other hand, progovernment pundits here are claiming that all the hullabaloo about a general strike is a ploy to divert attention from the regional election in Andalucia on March 25th, which the Partido Popular is tipped to win. The unions think that by concentrating on the iniquities of Mariano Rajoy's labour reform they'll frighten people into voting to keep the Socialist Party in power in Sevilla, as it has been since Andalucia became a decentralised region or autonomy on February 28th 1980. If they succeed, the Socialist dominance of Andalucia will then seriously rival the Franco dictatorship for longevity. But let's not count our chickens before they're hatched – although I'm already working on two different columns for the March 28th edition of The News. eanwhile, the decidedly promonarchy ABC newspaper is putting the unions under a microscope and releases interesting titbits every few days. A recent one was called “VIP trade union leaders” which tells how some former union leaders went on to sit on the boards of big companies, on which they had formerly represented their respective unions, and are now earning €366,000 a year before tax. Another little ABC snippet tells how

the unions had been taking advantage of idealistic young people to get them to work for nothing, long before the current government came up with the idea. The difference is that the government will keep up the youngsters' Social Security payments and let them keep collecting their dole payments or any other financial assistance they might have been receiving in lieu of dole. s for that ultra right-wing rag La Razon, it's seeing wild-eyed revolutionaries behind every bush and under every stone all over Spain. We'll soon be in the throes of another civil war, if this newspaper's warnings turn out to be right. I think it's fairly safe to say that small, radical antisystem groups are always quick to infiltrate peaceful protests anywhere in the world but at least here, I suspect, the students and the M-15 movement are much warier now that they've experienced the mayhem these groups can unleash. f the general strike goes ahead – as it probably will because the unions seem convinced they can force the government to drop or radically change the labour reform – I predict it will be an abysmal flop, especially if the PP wins in Andalucia. The Socialists will be in such a state of shock that they won't have the energy to protest about anything, let along a labour reform that they didn't have the guts to carry out when they should have.

A protest of my own

've been battling for months to cancel my contract with Vodafone and go over to the pay-as-you-go system, to no avail. One of their operators promised me about seven weeks ago to switch me over, then three weeks later another bill arrived. Enough is enough, I cried. I have since written a letter to their complaints’ department in Madrid telling them I have no intention of paying them a cent. By this time next week, they may have had me arrested but Kym says she'll ask the prison authorities to let me have a computer so I can carry on writing my column. (That will no doubt disappoint a few people out there!) However, seriously folks, our Help Line would be interested in hearing about any problems you may be having with this company with a view to taking the matter further (read that in an ominous tone of voice).

Those far-right elements within the Partido Popular and other right-wing groups are still pretty miffed over the Socialist win in 2004 just days after the March 11th, 2004 train bombings in Madrid. These people still can’t believe that Spaniards wanted the PP out and wanted Spain out of the Iraqi War – it was as simple as that. But now the PP is back in power, and the country’s new top law enforcement officer is looking for ways to back in to the March 11th inquiry based on “new evidence” that may or may not exist.

ttorney General Eduardo Torres-Dulce (right) announced on March 4th that he had ordered the Madrid district attorney to look into a report that wreckage from one of the trains that was bombed in the Santa Eugenia station, was still being kept outside the capital. Apparently, Tafesa, the company that was ordered to clear and refurbish the carriages after the investigative and forensic evidence was concluded, still has some of the scrapped metal stored inside a warehouse at a train yard outside of Madrid. This information was made public earlier this month by the conservative website Libertad Digital, which has been a strong propaganda voice for those who believe that the bombings, which left 191 dead and more than 2,000 injured, was perpetrated by ETA and not Islamic extremists as the courts ruled. Complete with its report in which it quotes unnamed Tafesa workers questioning why they were told to store that wreckage, Libertad Digital also posted photos of what appears to be the same scraps of metal which the website compares with the original wreckage of the train.

Ángeles Pedraza, of the Association of the Victims of Terrorism, and Ángeles Domínguez, of the Association for the Aid of Victims of 11-M – two organisations closely in line with the conservative party – are demanding that investigations continue because of the new supposed evidence found. The courts have long upheld that the explosives used to carry out the worst terrorist attack on Spanish soil was similar to devices used by terrorists in the Middle East, and far from what the Basque terrorist group ETA had ever used. A controversial Madrid court judge, who wanted to push the conspiracy issue through, was recently ordered to shut her own investigation focusing on the ETA and bomb theories because the case has already been settled.

egardless of the true findings of the March 11th 2004 bomb attacks, not everyone will be satisfied and, unfortunately, this spectre of speculation won’t go away. There are still a lot of people out there who believe George W. Bush and Dick Cheney had something to do with the World Trade Centre attacks in 2001 and, of course, the JFK second gunman theory is still being floated out there. But these brutal tragedies should not be used to further the political ambitions of a few fanatics. The 191 who died in 2004 train attacks should be allowed to rest in peace, and their families be afforded the necessary closure to carry on with their lives.

Marbella Smash and Grab The Jeans Factory Outlet Store on the Carretera de Cadiz, km 184.5, on the outskirts of Marbella was broken into in the early hours of last Friday morning. The 8mm plate glass window was smashed with what is believed to be an iron bar at 5.25am and three men equipped with large bags stole around 600 items of designer jeans and clothing including Tommy Hilfiger, Armani, and Dolce and Gabbana jeans(among other labels), Jack Jones Tshirts and Alejandro Jimenez party dresses

which have been valued at around €45,000. The whole snatch lasted less than three minutes from start to getaway. The owners of the store had to spend the day cleaning up after the smash and grab, although the store valiently stayed open for business and would appreciate our readers’ help in identifying any of these luxury goods that may be being offered at ridiculously low prices around markets or through bars and restaurants so that the perpetrators can be apprehended.

offer an easy way of getting his own back on what he sees as an uncaring world. So we head into the usual superhero territory – with great power comes great responsibility. The actors playing the three boys are authentic and the movie clips along at a brisk pace with never a dull moment.

London Calling - Best of British? One of the biggest events to happen in the UK this year is the Olympics, and Britain is home to some of the best musical artists and bands in the world – so why on earth is Blur the main act at the closing ceremony, along with New Order and The Specials? Seriously, is this the best the promoters can come up with? Please tell me I am not alone in thinking that The Stones, Jamiroquai, Adele or Sting would do a better job in representing their country – even Chas & Dave would be better at this point! Let’s go back to 1994 when Blur hit the charts with Parklife, which was quite a catchy little tune, but the same year Oasis’s debut album “Definitely Maybe” was far better. The fact is

when it comes to Brit Pop Blur and Oasis have always been rivals, but anyone with ears knows that Oasis is the better band. Many people do not like the Gallagher brothers, and I understand that, but you can’t deny that their music is excellent, it’s well crafted and structured. Only true Blur fans will know that Blur released two albums, prior to their success with Parklife, so they have been going three years longer than Oasis and, in my opinion, aren’t half as good.

If you think back there are only three Blur albums that were successful: Parklife, The Great Escape and 13 – and out of these three there are probably two decent tracks on each one. This said, if you heard “Coffee and TV” on the radio, you’d probably turn it off, the only thing that made that track great was the video with the cute milk cartons – so, “13” isn’t really a great album at all. Now, if you think about Oasis albums, just “Definitely Maybe” alone, the whole album is packed with classic songs – even Coca Cola are using one of the songs from that album for an ad campaign. After “13” Blur went quiet for a while, then Albarn came up with “Gorillaz” – they were ok, had one or two hits, but were by no means

memorable. It’s not like animated bands are that much of a novelty, personally I think “The Arches” – “Sugar” was far better than any of the “Gorillaz” work. London hosting this year’s Olympics gives Britain the perfect opportunity to show the world, what great athletes and talent they have, not palm us off with some band that broke up a decade ago and that aren’t very good. So why aren’t the best British bands fighting to represent their country? Is it because they have doubts about how the UK will pull off this event? My question is, why is this closing ceremony called “Best of British”, when it’s more like “Dregs of British”? Written by Abigail Tyler

unique there had been nothing like it before – or in the 40 years since. Many people don’t like musicals and I can understand why. People walking down the street and breaking into soppy love songs at the drop of a hat, and dancing in inappropriate places can be rather irritating. Cabaret has nothing like this. Every song (with the exception of one) is sung as a performance on the stage of the Kit Kat Club where our protagonist, Sally Bowles, works. he film is, of course, TChristopher loosely based on the Isherwood play “I am a Camera”, set in prewar Berlin. I say loosely based because the character Sally Bowles was actually English and had a terrible singing voice, so as you can imagine, the casting of Liza Minnelli in the part changed all that. he opening number TEmcee introduces us to the (Joel Grey) welcoming us to the club ‘Willkommen’ but far from feeling welcomed, the number has a very sinister feel about it and the chorus girls are nothing short of threatening and intimidating. he Nazis’ violent rise is a Tundercurrent powerful, ever-present in the film. Though explicit evidence of their actions is only sporadically presented, their progress can be tracked through the characters’ changing actions and attitudes. Although this is not, and was never meant to be, a horror film, I must say it has one of the most chilling scenes I have ever witnessed in a movie. On a sunny day, whilst people are enjoying a drink in a beer garden, a young boy stands and begins to sing. This is the only number not performed in the club. He is a blond

boy singing what seems to be an innocent lyrical song about the beauties of nature, but as the camera pans down, we see he is dressed in the brown uniform of the Hitler Youth. The song escalated into the strident “Tomorrow belongs to me” with the majority of the drinkers standing and joining in and the boy giving the Nazi salute. am not going to rattle on Itheabout the plot as without background, it is not a strong story. The story starts with Sally singing at the club, and ends with her there, but the strength of the story is because of its circumstances. A lot does happen though and there are a couple of sub-plots thrown in. n the beginning of the film, IareNational Socialist members sometimes harassed and even kicked out of the Kit Kat Klub, but the final shot of the film shows the cabaret’s audience is dominated by Nazi party members. here were memorable TMichael performances by Liza, York and especially Joel Grey, who had reprised his role from the stage production. The film was directed by choreographer and dancer Bob Fosse and any fan of his would instantly recognise his signature movements on stage. was interested to learn that Ihappy Ms Minnelli, who was not with the wardrobe department choices, hunted vintage and goodwill stores for the wonderful costumes worn by Sally Bowles. o, unique indeed. A Swithmulti-layered musical, timeless unforgettable numbers from Ebb and Kander, with a socio/political root! It doesn’t get much more diﬀerent than that .. and of course as a period piece, it will never date.

Spring has sprung and we can sit outside again, so why not try this authentic Sicilian pasta dish,and turn inexpensive fresh sardines and store cupboard ingredients into this simple springtime treat.

Pasta con le sarde (pasta with sardines) Ingredients:

Serves 8

• 1 handful fresh, wild fennel, roughly

• 2 tbsp pine nuts • 2 pinches

chopped (use fennel fronds as an alternative) • 10 tbsp olive oil • 1 brown onion, finely chopped • 5 anchovy fillets in oil • 1 kg/2lb 4oz fresh sardines, scaled, cleaned and filleted • 2 tbsp tomato purée • 2 tsp currants

saﬀron thread • 800g/1lb 12oz bucatini pasta (or spaghetti) • 2 tbsp breadcrumbs • salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions 1. Bring a large pan of water to boil, add the chopped fennel and boil for 20 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, heat eight tablespoons of the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onions and fry for five minutes until softened and translucent then stir in the anchovy fillets and fry gently for 3-4 minutes until they have broken down. 3. Add half the sardines, the tomato purée and a couple of ladlefuls of water from the fennel pan. Stir for a few minutes then add the currants, the pine nuts and saﬀron. Cook gently for 15 minutes. 4. When the fennel is cooked, drain and reserve the cooking water. Add the fennel pieces to the sardine mixture and a splash more fennel water

to slacken the mixture to a thick sauce consistency. Add the rest of the sardine fillets and cook for a further 10 minutes, breaking up the fillets a little. 5. Meanwhile, bring the reserved fennel water back to the boil. Add plenty of salt and top up with boiling water if necessary then add the bucatini and cook according to packet instructions. While the pasta is cooking, fry the breadcrumbs with the remaining olive oil over a medium-high heat until golden-brown and crunchy. 6. Drain the pasta and mix with the sardine sauce then leave it to rest for 10 minutes. To serve, spoon the pasta on to warm serving plates and sprinkle with the breadcrumbs.

Keep moving To learn more about how inactivity affects disease risk, researchers at the University of Missouri persuaded a group of healthy, active young adults to stop moving around so much. It’s known that sedentary people are at increased risk of developing heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, but the reasons haven’t been fully understood. The team asked a group of volunteers to halve the number of steps they took each day to determine whether this would affect the body’s ability to control blood sugar levels. They were fitted with glucose monitoring devices, and pedometers to track how many steps they took and told to live normally for three days, during which they averaged 10,000 steps a day. During this time, the volunteers’ blood sugar did not spike after they ate. Later they were told to cut back their step counts to below 5,000 a day for the next three days. They stopped exercising, took the lift, not the stairs, and became, essentially, typical American adults. During these three days, their blood sugar levels spiked significantly after meals. The peaks also grew slightly with each successive day. Spikes during inactivity are natural, because unused muscles need less fuel and so draw less sugar from the blood. The condition is more serious when it becomes the body’s default condition. The researchers said inactivity creates the

Just a few notes to let you have some happy news from the shelter.

A while ago an Argentinian couple came to us with their husky Kiara. Due to the economic crisis this couple couldn’t stay in Spain any longer and had to go back to Argentina. The dog couldn’t go with them and they were devastated. We took the dog in and were sorry to see that she was miserable and devastated too. It really broke our hearts. It was so sad to look at her. She was finally adopted by a lady who brought her back after one week, complaining that the dog was barking all the time. Of course everybody was very disappointed.

Many of you will have met the two little dogs that came to us from Huelva. They were at the shelter for almost one year and were a delightful duo: Chiciwine and Eddie. Unfortunately, being already a bit advanced in age, it was difficult to have them adopted, until a guest of one of our members saw them and fell in love with them. There was one snag, however, the guest lived in the UK. She went back to her country but couldn’t forget the pair. To cut a long story short, the two are now living in the UK and are very

The plans are being made by a firm of architects who have offered their services free of charge, for which we naturally are very grateful. We will keep you informed about this project. Two visitors went into the main Tourist Office in Malaga city centre and asked for directions to the English Cemetery. They were told that no such place existed! This ignorance in an official information office is astounding. The Anglican Church of St. George was founded in 1830 and has operated ever since. It is a listed historical site containing the graves of a number of famous expatriates of the last two centuries. It is also a War Grave cemetery for Air Force and Navy servicemen who died in World War II.

Pioneer 10 Deep Space Probe 40 years ago today saw the beginning of the longest journey in history when NASA launched its first deep space exploration probe Pioneer 10 towards Jupiter.

ack in March 1972 the Apollo moon missions were coming to an end with only Apollo 16 and finally Apollo 17 to finish off the program and now NASA were looking for a new goal to achieve. So it was decided to launch two interplanetary probes Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 toward Jupiter and Saturn.

ne of the main problems about sending a spacecraft to the outer planets is having to cross the asteroid belt, a band between Mars and Jupiter containing millions of pieces of rock and ice ranging in size from grains of sand up to 1000km. Many of the smaller asteroids had not been discovered at the time and so it was impossible to predict exactly their position. Collision with even a tiny asteroid would destroy the spacecraft and so between July 1972 and February 1973 NASA collectively held its breath as Pioneer 10 crossed the asteroid belt.

Guided tours take place regularly and on Remembrance Sunday the wreath-laying service is synchronised with that at the Cenotaph in London – the British Consul representing the Queen here in Malaga. There is a full choral high church service every Sunday at 11am and a said communion on Wednesdays at 10.30am. The congregation comes from a wide area – from Periana and Torre del Mar in the east and Coin and Mijas Costa in the west.

t would be fairly plain sailing from now on as Pioneer 10 continued on its lonely journey at a speed of 32,000 mph toward Jupiter. It was now the fastest man made object ever built. Back in 1972, computing power was still in its infancy and Pioneer 10 was capable of only 6,000 bytes of memory and data storage that was transmitted back to Earth via a 150W transmitter. Even the most basic of today’s mobile phones is capable of many hundreds of times more power than that!

ut even with its limited power Pioneer 10 still carried up to 12 separate scientific instruments on board designed to carry out a whole array of scientific measurements of Jupiter and its atmosphere. Finally on December 4th 1973 Pioneer 10 made its closest approach to Jupiter at a distance of 130,000km and began sending back incredible close up pictures of the giant planet and some of its 64 moons.

ut Pioneer 10 was not designed to stay in orbit around Jupiter and so after its one and only close fly-by it continued on its journey out of the solar system to who knows where? It eventually crossed the orbit of Neptune in 1983 effectively meaning that it had now left our solar system and crossed into interstellar space. It has no more fuel on board and continues to travel purely because there is no resistance in space to cause it to slow down or stop.

ommunication with Pioneer 10 was finally lost on January 23rd 2003 when it was 12 billion km from the Earth, which is equal to 80 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun. Several attempts were made to make contact with Pioneer 10 but the final attempt on March 4th 2006 proved that there was not sufficient sunlight reaching it any longer to power the solar cells and so the program was officially closed down.

s of February 2012 Pioneer 10 is travelling at 12km per second and is headed in the general direction of the star Aldebaran that is 68 light years away. At its current speed it is expected that it will reach Aldebaran in about two million years.

Defiant Peterson blasts Khan ahead of rematch Lamont Peterson has slammed Amir Khan for suggesting he can't raise his game for their world title rematch. Tiger Woods' hopes of playing at the Masters in April have been boosted by news that his Achilles injury is not as bad as first feared. The 36-year-old pulled out of the final round of WGCCadillac Championship at the weekend with the same injury that forced him to miss part of last year. St Helen’s player Sia Soliola injured in bar attack A New Zealand rugby league player has been left with serious facial injuries after an incident at a Merseyside bar. St Helens' Sia Soliola required hospital treatment after being found by police outside Imperial Bar on Ormskirk Street in the town at about 02:20 GMT. A second 19-year-old man was also injured in the attack. A 32-year-old man from Speke, Liverpool, a 23-year-old man from Lymm, Cheshire, and a 24year-old man from Chester have been arrested. A spokesman for the club said Soliola had been injured but would not comment on the attack. He would not say whether the injuries would keep the centre from playing against Bradford Bulls on Saturday.

BOA 'cautiously optimistic' after drugs ban hearing The British Olympic Association is "cautiously optimistic" after a hearing on Monday to decide if its lifetime bans for drug cheats breach the world anti-doping code. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) heard arguments from the BOA and the World Anti-Doping Administration (WADA), which opposes lifetime bans. If the BOA's bans are lifted, sprinter Dwain Chambers is among those affected who could compete at London 2012. A verdict may not emerge for a month. Following Monday's hearing, BOA chairman Lord Moynihan told reporters: "It was a good day, all the arguments were put really strongly. The voice of the athletes was definitely heard and we now wait and see.”
