Huge manhunt under way after fatal shootings One of the biggest manhunts in recent French history was set in motion on Monday after a teacher and three children were shot dead at the Ozar Hatorah school in Toulouse, and a teenage boy was seriously injured. to build a profile of the killer.
The fourth person killed was a seven-year-old girl, Myriam Monsonego, daughter of the head teacher. She died in her father's arms.
Police have linked the attack to two shootings last week in which three soldiers of North African or Caribbean descent died. Officials said the same gun and the same scooter were used in all the attacks, but the gunman has not been identified.

The weather at the moment is absolutely glorious during the day (having said that of course, it’ll probably be pouring with rain by the time you read this!) and, if we were in the uK we’d be more than happy with the kind of temperatures we had on Sunday for a midsummer’s day. On Saturday we went to Sierra Gorda Bistro in Coin for one of their Saturday Special menus. It was absolutely delicious (especially the pudding of homemade perfect shortbread biscuits with whiskey cream and fresh strawberry - oops! there goes the diet again!!) and Martin is a very good chef so, if you’re in the area, give them a try.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the Syrian embassy on Sunday to demand the expulsion of ambassador Hussam Edin aala, as “the political representative who legitimises a government which has been massacring the civil population for more than a year”. North Korea's chief nuclear negotiator, Ri Yong-ho, confirmed on Monday that the Viennabased International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) – the UN's nuclear watchdog – has been invited to the country for the first time in three years. North Korea expelled IAEA inspectors 10 years ago after a deal with the US fell apart. In 2003, the secretive Communist state withdrew from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The inspectors were allowed back several years later – but were thrown out again in 2009. Ri Yong-ho
said the aim of the move was to implement a deal with the US. The North last month agreed to suspend nuclear and long-range missile tests in return for food aid, and to allow UN inspectors in. But North Korea's pledge to co-operate with the international community was thrown into doubt last week, when Pyongyang announced plans to launch what it called a rocket-mounted satellite between April 12th and 16th to mark the 100th birthday of its late Great Leader Kim Il-sung.

Massacre suspect meets lawyer Staff Sgt Robert Bales, who is accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians in their homes has had a three-hour meeting with lawyer John Henry Browne at Fort Leavenworth. Sgt Bales, 38, is being held in solitary confinement pending charges. He arrived at the military detention centre in Kansas on Friday after being flown from Kuwait, the US Army said. Formal charges are expected later this week. Sgt Bales is the only known suspect in the killings – despite Afghan assertions that more than one
American was involved. Mr Browne has represented a number of high-profile clients including serial killer Ted Bundy and a teenage thief known as the Barefoot Bandit. In a statement, Mr Browne's team said "it is too early to determine what factors may have
played into this incident". Mr Browne has suggested his client was not fit to serve because of injuries he had suffered on previous tours of duty. The killings have undermined US relations with Kabul and called into question the Nato timetable for pulling troops out of Afghanistan.
Russia now supports call for daily truce Russia has joined the call by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for a daily two-hour humanitarian ceasefire in Syria. The head of the ICRC, Jakob Kellenberger, had travelled to Moscow to discuss a ceasefire arrangement with

The first set of statistics to be revealed in connection with people who have been reassessed to see if they needed incapacity benefits show that 37% were found to be fit for work – and that doesn’t include those who have already launched an appeal against the decisions made. The rest were deemed entitled to employment and support allowance benefits. Just under 29% will get unconditional financial support and a further third will receive support to get them working. Employment minister Chris Grayling said he wanted to get those fit for work into jobs "as quickly as possible". He said in an interview that those who are fit to work will be moved on to a Jobseekers allowance which is lower but, he added, that the idea is to get them back into employment and away from receiving government handouts. He denied there were not enough jobs for
the number of unemployed saying: "Every week. Jobcentre Plus receives 80 to 90,000 new vacancies... There are always people moving into jobs." He added that people who have been on benefits for a long time should "take advantage" of the jobs available. Richard Hawkes, chief executive of the disability charity Scope, raised concerns about the numbers published by the Department for Work and Pensions. "These new figures seem to suggest that over a third of people receiving out of work benefits such as employment and support allowance must have been claiming these benefits fraudulently," he said. Tesco launched its first pension scheme in 1973 when it expected their retirees to live until 77 years of age. However, now the company expects their average 40 year old to live into their nineties. With that in mind, Tesco have raised their retirement age to 67, making it the first British company to do so and is hoping to implement the changes as early as June 1st this year. A Tesco spokesman said: "Because people are living much longer pensions cost much more to provide. These changes will make our defined benefit scheme sustainable." However, they have also announced that the 172,000 employees still working within the scheme – that has 293,000 members in total – will not be expected to work the extra time, but it will hit
their pensions savings if they decide to retire at the previous 65-years-old retirement age. Under the new plans, Tesco will also use the lower inflation measure – consumer prices index (CPI) – to calculate the annual increases in its contributions to employee pensions. It currently uses the retail prices index (RPI) which was 3.9% in January compared to a CPI figure of 3.6%. However, it has kept the maximum rise in any year at 5%, twice the level set by the government.

Sunday trading laws are likely to be relaxed for larger stores during the eight weeks of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in July August and September. Laws as they stand allow for only a six-hour period of opening for shops during the hours of 10am and 6pm under the Sunday Trading Act 1994 for shops over 280m2 and they are not allowed to open at all on Easter Sunday.
Officials hope that this will allow the thousands of visitors to the UK for the Games to spend more money giving the economy a huge boost to retail sales. However, stiff opposition is expected to come from Church leaders and Suffolk coastal MP Therese Coffey says she will fight the decision to extend
opening hours as she fears it will become a permanent change and will prevent shop staff enjoying the “once in a lifetime” chance to enjoy the games on home soil.
A group of NHS doctors have announced their intention to stand against high profile coalition MPs at the next general election in protest at controversial health reforms.

Innocent until when? David Gilroy has been found guilty of killing his ex-girlfriend Suzanne Pilley after she broke off their relationship. The pair worked together in the same building and it is said that he killed her in the basement of the building, hid her body in the boot of his car then transferred the body to rural Argyle where he dumped it. He was not caught on the CCTV cameras in the building and denies the murder. The body has never been found. The case against David Gilroy was built wholly on circumstantial evidence pieced together by police and prosecutors, but it was enough to prove his guilt. The jury were presented with five crucial strands of evidence which enabled them to convict Gilroy of murdering Suzanne Pilley. • Gilroy bombarded Ms Pilley with more than 400 texts and 49 phone calls between April 11th and May 3rd. But after she disappeared the following morning, he did not text or call his victim’s phone even once as he knew she was already dead, later telling police it was because he did not want to “interfere” in their investigation. • Gilroy had cuts and grazes to his hands and arms, which he claimed he suffered while gardening three days before Ms Pilley
vanished. Forensic experts testified that they appeared more recent and matched those typically inflicted by victims of strangulation. A police photographer also spotted that he had tried to cover the wounds with make-up while she was taking pictures of them on May 7th, 2010. • Specially trained “cadaver” dogs, which can identify the smell of human remains, showed “interest” in the boot of Gilroy’s Vauxhall Vectra and areas of the garage at IML where he would have loaded Ms Pilley’s body into the vehicle. • Police re-staged the journey Gilroy made from Edinburgh to Lochgilphead on May 5th, 2010, and found it took them around three hours. Gilroy took almost five-and-a-half hours, giving him time to dispose of the body. Vegetative matter found on his car, which also had three fractured coil springs, indicated that it had been driven “off-road”. • Prosecutors had to present evidence that Ms Pilley was dead to prove their case. Checks established that Ms Pilley had not used her bank account, credit cards, passport or bus pass, and had never contacted friends or family after May 4th, 2010. Gilroy moved back in with his wife and children and denies the murder.

The victim, who has not been named, was stabbed in front of a number of witnesses and police spent the night gathering evidence from those who remained at the scene, thought to be around a hundred people and they have asked for anyone who left the house prior to speaking to police to get in touch with them. But the perpetrator was not found to still be at the premises and police are looking for the knifeman. In the meantime, Herbie Hide and his family have relocated to another location while police carry out investigations at the property.

Rubbish collection In an effort to improve the town's image as well as save money, Mijas Pueblo town hall has eliminated door-to-door rubbish collection. 'Cruising' reduced by 95% Benalmadena's Local Police have managed to reduce the number of socalled cruising incidents at Las Yucas since a local newspaper published an article about it in January. More than 15 gypsies, including a pregnant woman and four children, have occupied three terraced houses in the Santa Clara district of Alhaurin de la Torre, claiming they are all unemployed and have no money to pay rent. Their spokesman, Juan, told reporters: “What do you expect us to do, go live in a field?” The owners of the houses – the Puerta Mediterranea Cooperative Society of Andalucia – reported them to the Guardia Civil last Saturday who visited the squatters several times over the weekend, along with the Local Police, but could not
evict them because they did not have a judge's order to do so. The street of terraced houses has been largely empty since building work was halted three years ago because of lack of money

ITV station opens After a delay of one year, the ITV station is to be officially opened today, Wednesday, March 21st, to cater to more than 149,000 vehicle owners in Marbella, Benahavís, Istán and Ojén. rrogance never pays off. Tuesday’s conviction of former Balearic premier Jaume Matas is a clear example of how one person, who did everything in his power to ensure that a public corruption inquiry in his region was halted – even coming to Madrid to demand why prosecutors were poking around in his interests – saw his entire life come to a full stop. Matas, a former minister in the José María Aznar government, has been sentenced to six years in prison by a three-judge panel on the Balearic regional High Court for fraud, embezzlement and dereliction of public duties in connection with giving some €500,000 to a former El Mundo journalist to write glowing articles about his administration. It is only one part of a much larger case regarding the ongoing corruption schemes in the Mediterranean islands.

It became very antiSocialist during Zapatero’s time, when the Socialists did everything possible to play down the vital role played by King Juan Carlos during the transition to democracy after Franco’s death – an unforgivable sin in ABC’s eyes. he PP’s candidate this Sunday, Javier Arenas, was born in Seville in 1957 and started out his political career there as deputy mayor from 1983 to 1987. He spent the Aznar years in Madrid, as labour minister and deputy PM, but headed back home when the PP lost the 2004 general election, as president of the PP for Andalucia. Since then, a lot of people (myself included) have thought he would make a better candidate than Mariano Rajoy, but Arenas had his sights set on ending the Socialists’ 30-year rule in Andalucia. If he achieves that objective on Sunday, the Socialist Party will be hit by a political tsunami from which it may never recover. The PP wiped the floor with them in last May’s regional and local elections, then went on to win an unprecedented majority in last November’s general election. A third crushing PP victory in less than a year just might shatter the Socialist Party beyond repair. n indication of the Socialists’ desperation is the way they are harping on about “copago”, that is, a scheme by which people will end up footing part of the bill for their health care. The Catalan government has already introduced a nominal prescription charge of €1, and the farmacias have been threatening for months to charge everybody the full price. Why? Because the regional governments owe them hundreds of millions of euros and many farmacias are on the verge of bankruptcy. So the problem is not one of “copago” but of “impago” (non-payment) as Javier Arenas pointed out on Sunday. That same day former Socialist health minister

Trinidad Jimenez was in Malaga scaring voters with the spectre of copago – something she had been in favour of when the Socialists were in power. ll this reminds me of how for years I used to tell people that the Soviet Union would come crashing down one day “but probably not in my lifetime”. Then I stood back and watched open-mouthed in amazement as one Soviet satellite after the other broke away from Moscow. I’m feeling a bit like that now. I’ve been bashing the Socialists (aka the Spanish Socialist Workers Party, PSOE) for years for being namby-pamby armchair revolutionaries who wouldn’t recognise a worker if you shoved one up their noses, but I confess to a certain bewilderment at the way the voters have turned against them. Another thrashing on Sunday will leave me speechless. It’s almost as if I hate it when my predictions come true – I always said Zapatero would be the death of the Socialist Party. he main reason for their defeat in Andalucia will be the cesspool of corruption they’ve created over the past 30 years, but more on that next week when, if the PP wins, we’ll see that the current EREgate scandal is just the tip of the iceberg.

n response to the many complaints about Vodafone called in to the Help Line in response to my column last week, I decided to set up an email address so that people could put it all in writing with a view to collecting information for an action en bloc against the company. So, with lots of help from young Abi who lays out the pages and does a hundred other things here at the paper – we went to Google to open a gmail account. Gmail rejected a lot of names all revolving around “angry”, “dissatisfied” “hopping mad” and “livid” consumers because they were already taken. We were just beginning to despair when it finally accepted reallylividconsumer@gmail.com o there you have it. Please use it and one day Vodafone may get what it deserves. Last week they put me on the pay-as-you-go system as I had been requesting for months, but they still insist I owe them €35, which I refuse to pay. atas’ dream was to turn his archipelago into a first-class tourist destination, hopefully knocking Monte Carlo off the jet-setters’ lists. He pumped millions of euros into modernising Palma de Mallorca, building an opera house, the Calatrava, by the sea, setting up a modern road network in Ibiza, and constructing a sports complex that was to bring some of the world’s greatest events to the islands. Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer played a benefit match on May 2nd, 2007 for the sports centre’s inauguration. It was the last crowning moment for the Partido Popular (PP) leader, who went on to lose his re-election bid later that month and be prosecuted three years later. Those who shared his ambition had to also pay a price – the costs of doing business with Matas, prosecutors say, were high. The Palma de Arena sports complex was budgeted at €44 million but ended up costing €100 million. Where the the rest of the money go?

oyal son-in-law Iñaki Urdangarin, who is expected to be ordered to stand trial in the coming days for allegedly diverting public funds he received from the Matas government, was a close collaborator. He was employed by Matas to organise a series of sports and tourism conferences allegedly at inflated prices. It was the investigation into Matas’ dealings that gave prosecutors wind of Urdangarin’s businesses.
n the end, Matas was unable to stop any inquiry. He even threatened a string of journalists who began writing stories about the whispers which for so long had been circulating the Balearic Islands. His PR man, Antonio Alemany, the former El Mundo columnist and co-defendant, who set up a local state news agency – mind you, a propaganda organ – was given a threeyear nine-month sentence. Lawyers for the two say they will appeal the case, but Matas still has many more trials to face. In all, there are 26 separate cases involving the alleged corruption that took place during Matas’ second term as premier from 2003-2007. (He previously served from 1993-99 before joining the Aznar administration as environment minister.) The payoffs to the El Mundo journalist is the smallest of all these prosecutions he is facing– the tip of the iceberg.

The only question is: will this current PP government allow these corruption cases to continue?

María Dolores de Cospedal, the regional premier in Castilla-La Mancha and the PP’s number two, almost got her way last week by finding a plum post for her husband on the board of the national electricity grid, Red Eléctrica. The salary of €180,000 would have been pocket money for Ignacio López de Hierro – his wife gets two fat incomes from the party and her public position as Castilla-La Mancha chief. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy wasn’t amused. When the news hit the websites of all the major newspapers on Thursday, excrement also hit the fan at Moncloa. By Thursday night, López de Hierro was sending out communiqués saying he was rejecting the nomination.

On a sunny Tuesday in March, Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar visited Loja and Rio Frio with an international group of friends – German, English, Spanish and French.
CHAIN the animal charity instigated a Christmas Wish List, where charities were nominated for special help during December 2011. Charities that were provided with this much needed help were:
Loja is situated in the Sierra Loja in the province of Granada. The town dates back to prehistoric times and has been occupied by the Phoenicians, Romans and Moors. The Catholics finally conquered it in 1486. On arrival, Ana the guide took them firstly to the Mirador de Sylvania, where there was an excellent view across the valley and the central ancient part of the town set on a hillside. They visited the Mausoleum of General Maria Narvaez, Duke of Valencia born in Loja on August 5th 1800, died 1868. He was seven times the President of the Council of Ministers of Spain, from 1844 to 1868, and was known as “The Great Sword of Loja”.
The visit continued to the 25 Jets Fountain, built by the Moors, since refurbished and the water of which is believed to have healing properties. It was then up the hill towards the centre of town visiting the Encarnation Church built on the site of the old mosque, first started in the 16th century and extended in the 18th century. In the Plaza de la Constitution, those of the group who preferred to rest of and partake refreshments were left to relax, whilst the hardier

members of the group continued up the hill to the Archaeological Mirador of the Alcazaba, from which the view of the Sierras, topped with snow were beautiful and where they had a tour of the old Christian Governor’s House which now houses the History Museum. It was then time to return to the coach for the short drive to Rio Frio, where the trout farm is situated and where they were able to taste the delicious fish over an excellent lunch. There was still time afterwards to see the farming tanks for the fish and strolled along the river bank up to the source of the river.
Watch out The consumer watchdog Facua has issued a new alert over fraudulent online classified ads for holiday rentals. "They offer flats for very attractive prices. In order to request the money up front, the supposed owners claim they are unable to show the flat because they live outside of Spain or in another province." They then request one or more months' rent as a deposit in the case of longterm rentals, or an upfront payment for a holiday rental, then they claim they will deliver the keys and rental contract upon receipt of the money. "But the company referred to offers no such service and the advertisers are not the owners of the flat – the money goes straight to the fraudsters," says Facua.
The final treat was afternoon tea, or coffee and typical, local homemade cakes in one of the local restaurants. The return journey was made through the country side to Ventas de Zafarraya, being treated on the way to the sight of the almond blossom and wild orchids in the fields. Finally down the winding road to the coast with the view of the lights of Velez Malaga and Torre del Mar, shining in the dusk. It had been a long but most enjoyable day appreciated very much by the whole group.

DAVID THE DOGMAN:Accidents pt 1 Basic First Aid As an ardent reader of the Collins Dog Photoguide I came across this article, which I feel, might be of interest to readers. Traffic Accidents A traffic accident is probably the most common cause of serious injury to a cat or dog. Always approach the animal with caution, it may react aggressively because of the pain. Move the dog as little as possible, but if you must move it, it is probably best to use a blanket, sliding it underneath the dog. Seek the assistance of another person and lift the dog gently to safety. Check for heartbeat and any haemorrhaging. Attempt to stem excessive bleeding by holding a clean pad or clean handkerchief over the wound, binding it tightly with a makeshift bandage.
Call the nearest vet's surgery to warn of your arrival. Burns The only recommended first aid is to clean off the offending substance and immerse the body part under cold running water for as long as possible. Seek professional advice immediately.
Remove froth and lower the dog's temperature as soon as possible by placing or dousing the animal in cold water.
Poisoning Signs of poisoning may include collapse, muscular twitching, vomiting, bleeding or convulsion. Do not hesitate to contact the vet. Take some of the noxious substance to the vet with you if you know what it is. If the dog has recently swallowed the poison, try to make it vomit. Salt and mustard in water will usually work quickly, or a small piece of washing soda (sodium carbonate) pushed down the throat.
Take the dog to the vet immediately where it will be treated with drugs and more cold water.

Dressed for success Horse riders around Alhaurin el Grande are usually to be seen in traditional Spanish style saddles and bridles, dressed in casual jeans and shirts (unless it is feria time and the special “trajes” are brought out on show). But recently riders of all ages came to Los Prados, a livery yard out in the campo just outside the town dressed in English style black jackets and snowy white jodphurs to show off their paces in dressage. It all looks deceptively easy to the uninitiated, after all how difficult can it be to walk or trot from one letter to another or canter round in pre-determined circles? Prados try to hold several inland dressage events each year and the latest one attracted some 40 entries and a very respectable audience on a sunny Sunday that was just perfect for being outdoors. The morning sessions were for the beginners – many of these were children from the Rancho del Rio Saturday pony club in Cartama, run by Jane
Hepburn (pictured with her gang and their rosettes). The later classes saw the older and more experienced riders competing at a much higher level on much larger horses. But all were plaited and preened and polished until they shone – riders as well as horses. And by the end of the day everyone was wondering when the next one would be!

Racenight success Coin Branch of the Royal British Legion held a Race and around 70 people attended this lively event in aid of the Poppy Appeal at JK’s Snooker Matchroom in Coin. After the first race, the race goers were fed a choice of chilli, curry or hotpot by a talented culinary team of volunteers from the Coin RBL social committee. There were 8 races in all, each sponsored by local businesses. The horses in each race were sold to raise extra money and provide a winning dividend for the owner. The last horse sold in the final race raised a fantastic 50 alone. Unfortunately the horse, Weakest Link, lost to Del Allwood’s Emmerdale Lass, which netted him a cool 100. The overall event was sponsored by Iberdrola, De Cotta Law and De Cotta Property and raised 1566.80 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Benalmádena opens its doors to some 600 barbershop singers and enthusiasts from tomorrow until Sunday 25th March, for the fourth annual convention of the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS), with delegates arriving from America, the UK and Europe tickets are just €1. Originating in the USA in the early 1900’s, barbershop has gained worldwide popularity with thousands of singers practising and promoting this unique art form of four-part, a cappella harmony singing. When SABS was founded in 2008, barbershop was
virtually unknown in Spain, but the word has spread and there are choruses and quartets arriving from all over Spain and Portugal, including Southern Sound, Costa Chord Busters and Tropical Tones from the Málaga and Granada regions. As well as the contests, two shows will be staged at the Torrequebrada’s Sala Fortuna theatre on 23rd and 24th March and tickets are almost sold out. Big Band comes to Estepona this weekend There are not many chances these days to hear the music of the 1940s and 1950s played by a real classic big band. King’s Bruton School near Bath in Somerset bring their Big Band to Instituto Monterosso, Estepona near the Wednesday market site this Saturday March 24th for a performance in aid of ADANA. King’s School Big Band is a nineteen piece Big Band with two vocalists. They performed in Spain four years ago to much acclaim. Since then they have played in the Birmingham Jazz Festival and recorded a third CD. The Big Band play a mixture of Big Band styles including Swing, Latin and Funk. The country looks uncannily like 1930s Depression America, and is divided between the haves and have-nots. The rich and privileged live in the Capitol, and for the sheer fun of it, have instituted the Hunger Games, a TV reality show watched by millions, in which poor young people are selected by lottery to
fight to the death. The youngsters and their families live in cardboard huts and shanty towns in Panem’s 12 districts, and are fodder for the games, but now one girl is trying to change her destiny. Coal miner’s daughter Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) volunteers to take the place of her younger sister in the knock-out competition (Stanley Tucci does a fine turn as the grotesque host) and bids to outsmart the system.
The movie is based on the hugely popular teen books by Suzanne Collins, and has had critics raving about it being the best, most innovative sci-fi since The Matrix. The general view is that it’s smart and terrifying and looks like being the next big literary series aimed at youngsters turned into a blockbuster franchise – there’s definitely a gap in the market now Potter has
finished and Twilight is on its last leg. So, can Katniss change her destiny? The film ends with a cliff hanger – not a surprise really, as there are two more books in the series now ready to be brought to the silver screen if the first is a success – and with all the signs suggesting a big blockbusting hit there’s no reason to suppose we won’t be seeing more of Katniss.
From director Emilio Estevez and starring Martin Sheen comes a modernday odyssey – the soulful journey of a man rocked by personal crisis who sets off on an epic mountain trek, thinking he is utterly lost, only to keep bumping into surprise moments of community, companionship and inspiration that begin to steer his way. This spirited roadmovie-on-foot crosses territory that is alternately comic, adventurous and keenly moving, even as it becomes an unforeseen gift from a son to his father. Thomas Avery is an American doctor who goes to France following the
death of his adult son, killed in the Pyrenees during a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, a Catholic pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain, also known as the Way of St. James. Tom's purpose is initially to retrieve his son's body. However, in a combination of grief and homage to his son, Tom decides to walk the same ancient spiritual trail where his son had died. While walking the Camino, Tom meets others from around the world, all looking for greater meaning in their lives. He reluctantly falls in with

Jack (James Nesbitt) is an Irish travel writer who when younger had desires to be a great author like Yeats or Joyce but never wrote the novel he dreamed of. He is the last to join the quartet and
has been suffering from "writer's block." As the pilgrims travel the Camino, they occasionally meet and talk with other pilgrims — two Frenchmen, a young Italian and an elderly priest from New York named Father Jack.
think out of all of his Ithemovies, the one I dislike most has to be “The Colour Purple”. The music alone makes my skin crawl. I´ve never read the book, but I´ve been told the book is much better and the movie isn´t even close.

Let´s not forget the 1977 classic “Close Encounters” with the infamous musical hand signal, when the spacecraft lands at the end and all the people come out, I always think Elvis will appear – but he never does!

I don´t expect a beach party scene in “Saving Private Ryan”, but a movie as heavy as that needs some light humoured dialogue.

I wasn´t even very fond of “A.I.”, the only thing I like about “A.I.” was the way Jude Law clicked his head, “The Terminal” was boring and Hanks is irritating. ne of the only recentish O movies of Spielberg´s that I kind of liked, was “Catch Me If You Can”, it kept you intrigued, great story and who doesn´t love Christopher Walken?
am talking about “War Horse”. To be honest, this movie irritated me, for starters, it´s too long, lots of the earlier scenes should have been edited or better, cut. At first I thought it was set in Ireland, as everyone was talking with an Irish accent, except for the son. The “funny goose” scenes, seemed forced and childish, again why not incorporate humour into the dialogue, rather than “look at the silly goose!” ost of the scenes were M clumsy, it was like an old man that kept falling down. I couldn´t understand why the French and the German spoke perfect English, wouldn´t it have seemed more authentic with them speaking their own language and using subtitles? Surely the two German brothers would not have been talking to each other in English? I only noticed this, when the Englishman and the German go to cut the horse loose, the Englishman commented on how well the German spoke English!

1. Heat the olive oil in a pan and fry the onions gently for 10 minutes or so until softened and starting to brown. Set aside. 2. Next, on a lightly floured surface, roll out your puff pastry into a 26cm circle using a standard round dinner plate as a template. Cut around the dinner plate and disguard the trimmings. Place on baking tray covered with parchment. Score a circle around the edge of the pastry with a knife to make a 2cm border. 3. Now carefully spread the cooked onions inside the scored circle. Brush a little milk along the exposed border of the pastry. Bake for 10 minutes at 220˚C (200˚C fan)/Gas Mark 7 and remove from the oven. 4. Meanwhile, bring a pan of salted water to the boil and blanch the purple sprouting for one
minute, then drain and rinse under cold water. Leave to drain completely in a colander. 5. Arrange the sprouting spears over the onions. Mix the yoghurt and beaten eggs together and season with the salt and pepper, then pour over the top of the tart. 6. Scatter the feta cheese over. 7. Reduce the oven temperature to 200˚C (180˚C fan)/Gas Mark 6 and bake the tart for 10 minutes. 8. Then sprinkle the sesame seeds on top and bake for a further 10 minutes.

So to put to rest any uncertainties about us here is a little reminder about Ladies That Lunch! Two years ago I felt there was a need locally for women to meet socially and make friends without necessarily having to be part of a group that had something to sell or promote. Ladies That Lunch club We do not actually lunch – we just have coffee and this is done so that it is easily affordable for everyone.We always choose venues with easy parking and our meetings are always held in a non- sales environment. The main ethos of the group is to make friends and offer support to one other. We promote ourselves as a nonnetworking group which seems to have caused some confusion among people who may not have come to one of our meetings.
So let me clarify! We don’t have any set talks by business professionals nor do we hand out business cards or flyers. However, we do not stop you from sharing information about yourself and encourage discussion on any topic you wish to share – it’s part of you and your life, so we see it as helpful rather than networking. Often women ask "do you know a solicitor, or a mechanic etc.," and the group will then share their own personal experiences.

Spring has Sprung Yesterday, Tuesday 20th March at 06.15 am marked the official first day of spring or the Vernal Equinox when the Sun moved from the Southern Hemisphere into the Northern Hemisphere.
T
he reason that we have seasons is because the Earth is not standing directly upright but instead is tilted over by about 23½º. During the winter then the northern part of the Earth is pointed away from the Sun and so receives less sunlight. Then during the summer months the Northern Hemisphere is pointed toward the Sun causing warm long days and short nights.
T
he shortest day of the year falls on December 21st and is known as the Winter Solstice. The longest day of the year is on June 21st and is called the Summer Solstice – so it stands to reason that there must be a day that is half way between these two extremes when it is equal day and night, and that day was yesterday. It doesn’t matter where you stand on the equinox you will receive 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night time.
O
r nearly 12 hours – keen-eyed observers will have noticed that this isn’t exactly true. The date when there was exactly 12 hours of each was actually last Saturday 17th March. The reason why the equinox isn’t exactly divided in two is because the Sun is not a pinpoint of light but instead is a disc and daylight is measured from the first appearance of the Sun to the very last glimpse of the Sun as it sets. Therefore the width of the Sun’s face can make the day about 14 minutes longer than the night.
B
ut on the day of the equinox the Sun rises exactly due east and sets due west and will be directly overhead at noon if you were standing on the equator. Each day from now on the Sun will climb higher in the northern sky but will gradually get lower in the southern sky as the onset of their autumn approaches. The opposite of the Spring Equinox is the Autumn Equinox that occurs on 21st September. This is the point when once again the Sun will be directly above the equator half way between summer and winter.

his year’s equinox is unusually early, the equinox normally occurs on 21st March but because this year is a leap year it is now one
day earlier. The equinox is also a very important date in the Christian calendar as the date for Easter is calculated from this date. Easter falls on the first Sunday that comes after the first full Moon that occurs after the Equinox. The next full Moon will occur on Friday April 6th so Easter is the following Sunday April 8th. The earliest possible date that Easter can fall on is 22nd March with the latest date being April 25th.

here is a very interesting phenomenon attached to the equinox, it has been noted for many years that because the Earth is in effect standing directly up on its end on this day then on these days alone it is possible to stand a raw egg up on its end. Last September 21st on the last Autumn Equinox I was explaining this on the Hannah Murray radio program on Talk Radio Europe and we had quite a number of people phoning into the program saying that they too were able to do it. Hannah tried it herself live on the air and was amazed to find that it could be done (see photo above) so you may want to try it for yourself – please let me know if you were able to do it!

ry and catch a glimpse of the crescent Moon this weekend when it will be very close to the two bright planets Jupiter and Venus and will make a really nice image. Look to the west after sunset on Sunday March 25th and it will be just to the right of Jupiter, check again the following night Monday 26th and it will have moved up to join Venus in a rather nice conjunction of all three, enjoy.

Cameron and Obama in oil crisis talks David Cameron and Barack Obama have been discussing an unprecedented international deal to force down the price of fuel. In talks at the White House, the president is understood to have raised the idea of both the U.S. and Britain authorising a release of strategic oil reserves to increase supply. But no deal has yet been reached. Just six days before the Budget, the Prime Minister told U.S. students that the cost of filling up in Britain would make American motorists ‘faint’.
Winning start for Button McLaren's Jenson Button won the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne's Albert Park on Sunday, taking the chequered flag despite a safety car deployment that gave some hope to Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel. Porsches and St Patrick – After getting away from the line quicker than his team mate Lewis Hamilton, Button continued to pull away. Hamilton held that second spot until Vitaly Petrov stopped with power steering problems in his Caterham on the 36th lap and forced the safety car deployment. With the McLaren team pitting both of their cars in the lap, Vettel decided to stay in the race for one more lap. This benefitted him greatly and was enough to move his Red Bull into second place. When the racing resumed on lap 42 Button simply left Vettel to fend off Hamilton and team mate Mark Webber. As Vettel tried to gain on Button, Webber closed in on Hamilton, whose McLaren never seemed as well balanced as his team mate's. By the flag, Button was a comfortable 2.1 seconds ahead of Vettel, with

SOL Classic Car Club's March run Club member Ian Couch organised this month's run – with the help of his son Michael – while he was still on a drill ship in the Far East and using the computer program Google Earth, classic cars combined with up-to-the-minute technology. The family turned out in two of Ian's three Porsches (he's a long-time fan of the marque) to take the other members on a spectacular route north of Malaga into the mountains round Antequera. The day began at Alhaurin el Grande and finished with an excellent lunch in the Venta José Carlos on the outskirts of Malaga. Between times
drivers and passengers enjoyed the scenery with a short stop at El Torcal and a tapas break. In keeping with the date they were given a quiz sheet on St Patrick and things Irish and Chrissie Blackburn (whose husband drives a Rolls Royce Silver Spur) entertained everyone with some Irish songs. Luke Donald returns to the top spot Luke Donald returned to the Nº1 spot with a stunning sudden-death victory at the Transitions Championship. And yet another victory on the US PGA Tour for a European golfer, which just a couple of years ago were few and far between. Donald played a magnificent seven-iron out of the right rough to six feet for a birdie on the first extra hole after making it into a four-man play-off with Korean SangMoon Bae and American duo Robert Garrigus and Jim Furyk.
Garrigus, who forced his way into extra time with a final round of 64, took full advantage of his power on the 18th hole at the Copperhead by hitting a 313yard drive into the heart of the fairway, leaving only a wedge into the hole.Yet Garrigus missed from eight feet while Donald holed-out for his fifth victory on the PGA Tour – so McIlroy's tenure at No 1 lasted just two weeks.
"Well, I enjoyed it while it lasted," McIlroy tweeted. "Congrats Luke, an impressive performance!"
Donald made it into the play-off with a final round 66, while Bae posted a 68 and overnight leader Furyk shot 70.
Meanwhile, it started out with a day to remember but ended up as a tournament to forget for Padraig Harrington. Torres finally ends his goal drought Fernando Torres finally ended his goal drought on Sunday when he scored twice in Chelsea's win over Leicester in their FA Cup Sixth Round meeting at Stamford Bridge. Malaga began well and after just 4 minutes Carzola was put in only for Casillas to save, after 14 minutes a good move found Isco who shot wide when he should have done better. Malaga were dominating but were nearly undone on 28 minutes, when Benzema nearly slotted home. On 35 minutes Malaga went to sleep, a Ronaldo whipped cross was missed by Monreal and Caballero to leave Benzema unmarked to head home at the far post. A bad goal for Malaga to concede in a first half they had more or less controlled. Madrid stepped up after half time, Benzema was a
thorn in Malaga's side and Ronaldo looked dangerous. Kaka set Ronaldo up and Caballero made a great save to keep Malaga in the game. Callejon headed just past on 69 minutes for Madrid and a minute later Ozil set up Benzema who shot over from 6 yards. With all looking lost for Malaga, a free kick outside the box gave Malaga a last chance, and what a chance, Carzola stepped up to rifle the ball into the top right hand corner from 30 yards leaving Madrid stunned. Fabrice Muamba has started to improve
Over a million people in Gibraltar, UK and around the world are expected to participate in Sport Relief events.
Fabrice Muamba "has been able to recognise family members and respond to questions appropriately", his club Bolton and the hospital have jointly said. The 23 year old can "breathe independently" without a ventilator but remains in intensive care after a cardiac arrest on Saturday.
Gibraltar will have its very own Sport Relief run which will take place along RAF Gibraltar’s runway on Saturday 24th March. There will be three different runs – a One Mile Run which will start at 4.30 pm and a Three Mile and a Six Mile which will start together at 5pm. The races will be started by Gibraltar Sports Personality of the Year Nathan Stagno and Miss Gibraltar Michelle Gillingwater Pedersen. “Everyone is invited to participate in what we hope will be a big fun event,” said Wing Commander Jim Holland of RAF Gibraltar. “And we particularly welcome runners in fancy dress and block entries from
companies, offices, and sports clubs. In fact, our aim is that the whole of Gibraltar will come together for a good cause.”

Amir blames Salman butt for spot-fixing saga Former Pakistan bowler Mohammad Amir has blamed ex-captain Salman Butt for the spot-fixing scandal that led to both being jailed.
