LOCAL NEWS - “ WATER AND OIL”
PP wins but falls short of a majority Despite having made history by winning its first ever regional election in Andalucia, the Partido Popular will not be able to form a government because it fell five short of the outright majority of 55. The Socialist Party won 47 – nine less than in 2008 – and the Izquierda Unida 12 seats – six more than last time – which makes the latter the power broker. Diego Valderas, the coordinator of Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) in Andalucia, said on Monday his coalition will take its time in deciding who to support saying “Nothing is written in stone, except that the IU and PP are like water and oil,”

But he then went on to say: “And the problem with the other side [referring to the Socialists] is that they

He added that both major parties were “the real losers” in Sunday's election. “They can sell the situation any way they want, but anyone who loses nine seats has been

Both major parties have begun to court IU members to side with them and form a new government. The Socialists and the PP need 55 seats in the 109-member parliament for an absolute majority.

On Monday we lost one of our cats. Pickle had reached 15 years old which isn’t a bad age for a campo cat. He was a great cat who had been very ill for the last few weeks of his life so, in a way it was probably a release for him. As anyone who has pets and is an animal lover knows though, it doesn’t make it any easier knowing that when they go. Still, he’s now buried in our garden with a lovely flowering penstemon over him that will give joy for the coming years, just as he did. On Friday evening we went to a very nice dinner as guests of the Conservatives Abroad at the Valparaiso restaurant. The members were all very nice and welcoming and the food was equally good. After the dinner, we stayed the night at the Tamisa Golf Hotel where the rooms are spacious and extremely comfortable so, all in all, a very enjoyable night out. Thanks for your company. The weather has been “iffy” up here in the campo over the last week. One minute it’s hot and all you need on is a T-Shirt, then a cloud covers the sun and you could seriously do with a coat, then we’ve had rain too! Good for the garden but it’s impossible to know what to wear so it’s layers for the foreseeable future and, no wonder half the population seems to be suffering from prolonged colds and ‘flu. As the saying goes: “ne’er cast a clout afore May is out”.... might get a bit hot by then in my woolies though!
Javier Arenas, the PP leader who won the elections by popular vote, only obtained 50 seats while the incumbent Socialist government of José Antonio Griñán won 47. The Socialists were surprised by the results, having expected the

thrashing that all the opinion polls predicted and the PP was devastated when the expected “resounding victory” did not materialise and power slipped out of their hands. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on arriving in Seoul on Sunday night to attend a summit on nuclear security, that he didn’t see it as an election loss. “Our party has obtained the best result ever in Andalucian elections,” he told reporters. “We won that election – elections that we have never before won.” He added that predictions “weren't always 100 per cent right”. PP general secretary María Dolores de Cospedal stressed the fact that PP candidate Javier Arenas had obtained the party's first regional victory in Andalucia. She shrugged off comments that the government's austerity measures may have swayed the vote. “The changes that

Industry Minister José Manuel Soria announced an electricity price hike of between 5 and 7 per cent for households on Tuesday, to take effect in April.
He said the electricity companies had been demanding a rise of 40 per cent, alleging that anything less would not cover production costs.

Iberia's pilots announced on Tuesday that they plan to go on strike on Monday and Friday every week from April to July. Their bone of contention continues to be the creation of Iberia’s lowcost airline, Iberia Express, which got off the ground last Sunday. The pilots and cabin crew held 12 one-day strikes in December, January and February trying to prevent the airline from taking off. They are now demanding first shot at the vacancies the expansion of the airline will create for pilots and cabin crew. An Iberia spokesman said if the strikes go ahead, they will disrupt Easter week travel and affect 2,500 flights in all, at a loss to the company of some €72 million.

Police arrested the administrator and four workers of an association which hopes to promote the cultivation of marijuana in Rasquera in Tarragona province during a raid on its headquarters in Barcelona last week but released them 254 hours later. During the raid the police seized some 2,000 in cash and 1.3 kilos of marijuana. Police said there were at least a dozen people on the premises waiting to purchase the drug but they were not arrested. Marijuana consumer associations
claim the law allows them to grow the drug for medicinal purposes and the Barcelona association was recently granted a plot of land by Rasquera's town council after consultation with residents to grow marijuana. It had passed an ordinance to make the cultivation of marijuana on government land in order to raise money and pay off its debts. The district attorney's office in Tarragona is currently looking at the project but has yet to decide if it is legal or not.

Wrongly jailed Spaniard returns home Oscar Sánchez arrived at Barcelona’s El Prat airport last Thursday afternoon after being released from jail in Italy, where he had served nearly two years for crimes he did not commit. Sánchez was arrested for suspected drug trafficking after Uruguayan Marcelo Roberto Marín had used his documents for several transactions, including booking hotel rooms. Sánchez’s lawyers and the Spanish police always maintained he had been the victim of identity theft. Sánchez had initially reported his ID as stolen, but later admitted he had loaned it to an acquaintance for money, believing it was to be used to help an illegal immigrant sort out his papers. The Italian authorities based their investigation on Marín’s movements and wiretaps of telephone conversations made in Sanchez’s name, giving
orders to a drug-trafficking ring. During his trial, an expert identified Sánchez’s voice as the one recorded by the Italian police in wiretaps of Camorra telephone conversations. He was sentenced to 14 years, but the judge ordered subsequently further analysis of the tapes, which proved that the recorded voice was not his.

Charity helps avoid evictions The Catholic Church’s Caritas has prevented more than 100 evictions since last September, when it set up its Housing Mediation Service (SMV) for families unable to pay their mortgages. More than 300 families – most of them headed by women – have asked for help and 200 cases are still being processed. An SMV spokesman said that in the cases solved, the families exchanged mortgage payments for a lower rental or were found new homes after they gave up their own to cancel the mortgage.

Only one in three Basques would support independence from Spain, according to a sociological study titled “Country model” carried out for the Basque Country regional government. Just over 40 per cent said they were happy with the region’s current decentralised status.
Sánchez, who spent 626 days in prison in Rome and Naples, told reporters he was treated with respect in Rome but in Naples it was a different matter: “They beat me with a stick, burned me with cigarettes, kicked me in the chest, shoved my head in a wardrobe and even etched an ‘N’ for Napoli into my arm.”

Pope Benedict XVI began his three-day trip on Monday, the first papal visit there for four years. The Pope was welcomed in Santiago by President Raul Castro who said in his speech at the airport that socialist Cuba allowed full freedom of religion and enjoyed good relations with the Catholic Church. Ahead of his visit, Pope Benedict had suggested Cuba's Marxist structure "no longer corresponds to reality" and called for the adoption of a "new model", but on his arrival, he recognised Cuba's efforts to "renew and broaden its horizons". The Pontiff then celebrated Mass before an estimated crowd of some 200,000 in Santiago's Revolution Square, which
President Castro also attended. Before Mass, one man was arrested after shouting: "Down with communism". The Pope's visit to Santiago coincides with the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the icon that is Cuba's patron saint – the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, which he cited as the main reason for his trip to the island. Found floating in a bay in 1612 by fishermen, the icon was revered by Cuba's independence heroes and sits in the foothills of the Sierra Maestra mountains from which Fidel Castro and Ernesto 'Che' Guevara

staged the 1959 Cuban revolution. The Pope is expected to make a private visit to the sanctuary where the icon is housed before travelling to Havana for private talks with President
Castro. Pope Benedict's trip to Cuba follows a visit to Mexico, where he celebrated a huge open-air Mass at the Christ the King monument in the central city of Silao.
'Alarming' surge in worldwide executions There was a marked rise in the number of executions carried out worldwide in 2011, mainly centred in the Middle East, Amnesty International has said in its annual report. The group said Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia were
most responsible for the increase but also noted that China executed more people than the rest of the world put together. At least 676 people were executed in 20 countries in 2011, according to Amnesty, compared with 527 in 23 countries in 2010.
Overall however, fewer countries now practise the death penalty. The group said the number of countries using capital punishment has fallen by a third, compared to a decade ago. The group also condemned as "shameful" the US's use of the death
penalty, noting that it was the only Western democracy to execute prisoners in 2011. The US ranked fifth in the world in capital punishment, with 43 people executed last year.
families who lost relatives in the Kandahar massacre have been paid compensation by the uS military. they received $46,000 for each person killed and $10,000 for each person injured, afghan officials and tribal elders said. uS staff sergeant robert Bales was charged last friday with 17 counts of premeditated murder. the families were also told that some witnesses would be flown to the uS to give evidence – and others would be able to participate by videolink – when Staff Sgt Bales stands trial. Call for drug legalisation President Otto Perez molina has said the war on drugs has failed, and it is time to end the "taboo" on discussing decriminalisation. He was addressing a Central american summit in the Guatemalan city of antigua which he convoked to consider decriminalisation as a way of reducing drug-related violence. Japan shuts down nuclear reactor Japan has closed down another nuclear power station, bringing it a step closer to suspending atomic energy as a result of last year´s Fukushima disaster. Only one of the country’s 54 nuclear reactors is still in operation, and it is due to be switched off in May for routine maintenance. Since the Fukushima disaster, local communities have been refusing to allow reactors to be restarted after routine maintenance,
which has to take place every 13 months. It is unclear when the reactors that have been turned off might be restarted. Before the Fukushima disaster in March last year, nearly a third of Japan's electricity was generated with nuclear power. Since then, Japan has increased its fossil fuel
imports, with electricity companies pressing old power plants into service to avoid a shortfall of electricity in the summer. Manufacturers have warned that more production may have to be moved abroad if the situation persists, which would damage Japan's economy.
Police obtain Toulouse video The al-Jazeera TV channel in Paris has passed on to the police a computer memory stick containing video footage filmed by Toulouse killer Mohamed Merah with readings from the Koran. The package was reportedly sent to the station on March 21st, the day police surrounded Merah's apartment, according to a report in Le
Parisien daily newspaper. During the stand-off, Merah admitted shooting dead three soldiers in two separate incidents, and killing three children and a teacher at a Jewish school in the city. His brother, Abdelkader Merah, has been charged with complicity in the murders, but has denied the accusations. Merah's father, Mohamed Benalel
Merah, has said his son would be buried in Algeria, his ancestral homeland. He also said he intends to take legal action against French authorities for his son's death, saying they could have chosen to capture him alive. On Monday, President Nicolas Sarkozy said he would ban militant Islamist preachers from entering the country.

UK News Caught on camera David Cameron has said that “what happened was completely unacceptable. This is not the way we raise money in the Conservative Party. I’ll make sure that there is an enquiry to ensure that this doesn’t happen again” after one of his senior fundraisers, co-treasurer Peter Cruddas was filmed by the Sunday Times in a sting
offering access to the Prime Minister in exchange for 250,000 pounds a year donations to the Tory Party. He added that Mr Cruddas was right to resign. The Sunday Times said that Mr Cruddas offered two people posing as “Lichtenstein based international financiers” while in a hotel overlooking

Announcing his resignation Mr Cruddas said: “I deeply regret any impression of impropriety arising from my bluster in that conversation. Clearly there is no question of donors being able to influence policy or gain undue access to politicians.” And on Monday, David Cameron said he had held three dinners with "significant" donors at Downing Street, as he announced details of an investigation into the damaging cash-for-access row. The Prime Minister insisted he had never had dinner with anyone proposed by Peter Cruddas. "None of these dinners were fundraising dinners and none of these dinners were paid for by the taxpayer," he added.

Military Awards secondary devices whilst in the tunnel that might have been planted to target anyone trying to diffuse the bomb.
Captain James Fidell, 28 was serving with 11 Explosives Ordnance Disposal Regiment when he found himself spending eight hours in a pitch-black tunnel – so tight that he couldn’t wear a specialist bomb disposal suit, helmet or any body armour while he diffused a 50kg Taliban bomb in August of last year. Captain Fidell, 6’5”and pictured above, was awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal after he decided to diffuse, rather than blow up, the bomb because he said: “The road is an important route for both locals and our forces. It is a concrete surface and therefore very difficult for the Taliban to lay bombs on. Had we detonated the device, not only would it have hurt the local economy, it would also have made it easier for the insurgents to plant more IEDs. Because of this I took the decision to crawl into the tunnel and deactivate the device.”
His citation states: “Captain James Fidell demonstrated exceptional gallantry, bravery, supreme professionalism and unwavering composure in the most dangerous of circumstances.” A total of 131 servicemen and women – most of whom served with 3 Commando Brigade in Afghanistan between April and October 2011 – have been recognised in the latest operational honours list. And in another ceremony over the weekend an RAF helicopter pilot, Flt Lt Daniel Cullen, pictured below, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross after single handedly flying his craft out of danger. His co-pilot had been shot in the foot and was slumped across the controls so Flt Lt Cullen used one hand to hold him up while piloting the craft with the other. He said: "I've been to Afghanistan a few times and been unfortunate enough to have been shot at and had the aircraft hit on a number of occasions. I think that had prepared me in some respects for taking rounds and knowing what to do."
He added that he had been quite surprised by how hot and humid the tunnel was. He crawled into the narrow 45’ long Taliban dug tunnel while troops providing security for him came under fire from insurgents. He said he was constantly looking for

But is it art? Channel 4 will reveal an exhibit by controversial artist Gunther von Hagens entitled The Crucifix on easter Sunday as part of his Body world exhibition. The latest work which shows a figure on a cross has taken him six years and was created by injecting liquid plastic into bones and blood vessels from a number of cadavers which then hardens to create a cast. The resulting figure does not contain any human tissue and was then mounted on a cross made from a tree felled from nearby his home in Germany. SCOTlAnd

Ireland’s former Prime Minister Bertie Ahern has resigned following a corruption inquiry although he insists that his resignation should not be seen as an admission of any wrong doing on his part. He was accused of lying to the Mahon Tribunal which examined his past finances. Bertie Ahern said:
“The last thing I want to do, given that I have now retired as a public representative, is to be a source of political division in the party that I care so deeply about.” He added that the findings of the probe had dealt him a “grave injustice.” He intends to challenge the findings of the tribunal, claiming that they were not infallible.
The Independent on Sunday has revealed that Chancellor George Osborne is pushing the Prime Minister to put expansion plans for a third runway – and all that goes with it – at Heathrow Airport back on the table saying that it is essential to Britain’s economic future. The plans had been set to one side following furious protests by residents in the area including those whose village of Sipson would completely disappear under the scheme.

Army geared up to step in Hundreds of soldiers are being prepared to stand in when lorry drivers are threatening to go on strike against fuel taxes next month. The last major strike was 12 years ago and caused chaos to the country as a whole. Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude has said that, obviously, services such as Fire and Ambulance need to run and they need petrol and other fuels to do so and the
Government had learned from the previous dispute. He added that they were ready to act if the members of Unite union walk out, although he also urged the union and employers including BP and DHL to come to an agreement beforehand. The results of a ballot of 2,000 of Unite’s members has been carried out and the results are to be given shortly. It is expected that strikes could start as soon as April 3rd if the ballot
shows that the members are in favour of strike action. Soldiers would be used to drive tankers through to get to fuel while police will be preventing any blockades by strikers. The union warned that strikes could hit petrol supplies at supermarkets, garages and airports across the country and the 2000 balloted drivers account for 90% of those who supply petrol to forecourts across the UK.
Second death after M5 crash on Saturday The driver of the lorry that crashed into the back of a bus carrying a party of fruit pickers on the M5 motorway early on Saturday morning has died. The 65-year-old haulage driver died at around 9pm on Saturday night in a Birmingham hospital from injuries sustained in the incident after the bus apparently broke down in the inside lane of the motorway in thick fog near Frankley Services.
The lorry driver was travelling from Manchester to Devon when his vehicle struck the back of the bus near junction 3 of the M5. Emergency crews who attended the scene treated more than 20 passengers who were being driven from Birmingham to Evesham in Worcestershire and a 35-year-old man from Smethwick was confirmed dead at the scene. Another passenger

A spokesman for the agency responsible for motorway signage said that they had overhead signalling saying “incident ahead, slow down” though it would appear that it did not say that one lane of the carriageway had been completely blocked by the bus. Getting back all the coins recovered from a sunken Spanish ship which the Odyssey Exploration company whisked off to the United States four years ago is turning into a real odyssey – like the original Greek legend of the same name. Most of the coins have in fact been returned but some were aparently left on
Gibraltar. The Spanish government said on Monday that the inventory of these coins which it has received recently from Odyssey Exploration and an earlier one sent in February are false and leave out a significant number of objects left on the Rock. Spain's lawyers have written to the Federal Court
in Tampa which handled the case demanding that Odyssey Exploration be fined for disrespecting its order to return all the treasure to Spain. Tampa judge Mark Pizzo ordered Odyssey last week to hand over all the objects found on the “Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes” in 2007 or be charged with civil contempt.
No place for needy in Marbella Several humanitarian organisations, including the Catholic charity Caritas, have questioned the claim by Marbella town hall that there are only 11 homeless people in the town. Most of the organisations have said there are dozens of people sleeping rough. A Cruz Roja spokesman said some 300 families were turning up at its soup kitchen every day – up from 180 last year. Dozens more go to the El Calvario parish church to receive vouchers to eat at a nearby inn. The organisations said that at least 60 per cent of the people they look after are Spaniards. There used to be a shelter for homeless people in the town but it closed in 2000. The organisations have asked the Partido Popular council to open another one but United Left councillor Miguel Diaz said the request had been turned down. The councillor in charge of Social Wellbeing, Manuel
Cardeña, said a shelter was not the answer to the problem. He said the council's Action Plan which works with various humanitarian
organisations attends to around 100 people who have to sign a kind of contract with the council in order to receive help.

The unions have agreed to minimum services of at least 30 per cent for public transport but hospitals will to only attend emergencies. As for schools, only the director and head teacher are expected to work and most parents plan to keep their children at home that day. Drivers may have to queue to fill their tanks as only 20 per cent of petrol station staff will be working. Duty chemists will be open as usual. Unofficially, small stores will probably open but people are
advised to stock up on supermarket goods on Wednesday. Opinion polls show that a majority of people are not in favour of the general
strike and many fear losing their jobs if they observe it. Others fear losing a day's pay. Just how many pickets will be out to enforce the strike is not known.

Computer skews tax The local council has announced it will discount the raise in garbage tax, which appeared on the last bill because of a computer error, from future bills. The problem arose when the computer decided some people had not paid their bills when in fact they had, and applied the corresponding “fine” for late payers. a spokesman said the error was caused by the fact that the oldest tax payers’ NiEs did not include the letters with the numbers.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
A pretty pickle
T
he Partido Popular won the most votes and most seats (50) in Sunday’s regional election, but fell five seats short of a majority. The Socialist Party won 47 seats – nine less than last time around – and Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) won 12 – six more than in 2008. While the PP made history on Sunday – the party had never won in Andalucia – Javier Arenas cannot form a government unless the IU supports him. And that’s as likely as a snowflake’s chance of surviving in hell.
I
U leader Diego Valderas has already said the PP and the IU are like oil and water, and pointed out that “Andalucia is not Extremadura”. In last year’s election in that region, the PP won but without a majority. IU decided, most uncharacteristically, not to vote against the PP when the regional parliament met to decide who was going to form the government. The Socialists had been governing Extremadura for nearly 30 years, more often than not in alliance with the IU when they fell short of a majority. But they had made the big mistake of never throwing so much as a crumb of power to IU, so the latter got its own back by letting the PP take over last year. IU national coordinator Cayo Lara went ballistic, having sworn on several occasions before the regional and local elections in May last year that IU would never help the PP to take power anywhere in Spain, but the party’s grass roots – very bravely – chose to ignore him.
T
his won’t happen in Andalucia, where IU has enjoyed its little share of power in many towns and villages thanks to alliances with the Socialists. Valderas has said he will consult the grass roots before making any decision but that consultation will concentrate on what the IU is going to demand in return for its support. It remains to be seen just how radical those demands will be. The Socialists will agree to all of them, no matter how wild or radical they are, because they don’t want to give up power. They also need to stay in power in order to cover up the corruption that would have come to light had the PP been able to form a government.
A
ll this is bad news because the Communist-dominated IU has never made any secret of its
Blowing it open desire to abolish the monarchy and replace it with the Third Republic. It also consistently supports any wild idea the loony left comes up with. It’s the old Communist belief that stirring up trouble and mayhem will eventually lead “the masses” to overthrow the government and restore society to the state of grace that Adam and Eve enjoyed before their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
H
owever, the Socialists seem to have forgotten just how much IU and the Catalan Republican Left party (ERC) screwed up Zapatero’s first government. He couldn’t form a government without them in 2004 so for the next four years most Spaniards were under the impression that Catalonia was the only region that existed in Spain (ERC) and that we were reliving the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship (IU). Both ERC and IU lost seats in the 2008 election, forcing Zapatero to turn to the Catalan and Basque nationalist parties in order to form a government. All he proved in the long run is that alliances with nationalists and the loony left simply don’t work. What the Socialists should bear in mind is that, as a party with a nationwide following, they have more in common with the PP. Together, the two parties have always won around 80 per cent of the votes in general elections, indicating that they embody the hopes and aspirations of the vast majority of Spaniards. IU has only done better in the three elections since last May because the loony left-wing of the Socialist Party have voted for it – as they obviously did last Sunday – to express their rejection of what they see as the party’s drift to the centre.
D
uring the run-up to the election, the rumour was that Junta premier Jose Antonio Griñan was much more conservative in private than he appears to be in public. If that’s true, it will be interesting to see how he gets on with his IU partners, especially when he starts making the cuts he’ll have to make to get Andalucia back into the black.
S
unday’s election has put the war against Vodafone on the back burner this week, but I’ll be taking up the cudgel again next week, when we should also know what the next regional government is going to look like.
O
pen government seems to be one of Mariano Rajoy’s major ingredients to take us out of this recession, or at least, modernise Spanish society. I opt for the latter. The Partido Popular (PP) leader has been going around, courting other world leaders during his first 100 days in office, telling them about the great changes he has in store for Spain. People like David Cameron said they were “impressed” by what they heard. Of course this was before bad boy Rajoy threw his now famous monkey wrench in Brussels and announced that he wasn’t going to follow the EU’s goal and keep Spain on course to reach a 4.4 percent of GDP deficitreducing target by the end of this year. No, what Rajoy had been raving about was bringing his government on a par with other industrialised nations by introducing a new transparency law that allows citizens, as well as future investors, to access information that has otherwise been difficult to obtain.
T
he public has 15 days from this past Monday to give its own two pennies on what it would like to see incorporated into the new law that would broaden Spaniards’ rights to know about what their government is up to. Still in draft form, the bill would enable ordinary people to demand information from government ministries and agencies on just about anything that involves public money. The government entities will have 30 days to comply with citizens’ requests. One of the biggest features is that all work contracts, including the amounts awarded and the names of the contractors, will be posted on the internet.
T
he Rajoy government thinks this will curtail government corruption, and dissuade evil businessmen looking to make a buck, such as those ringleaders of the Gürtel conspiracy, who allegedly waved a bundle of cash to a group of PP politicians in exchange for juicy public works contracts.
T
he new law will also punish those government leaders who fail to obey Madrid’s orders to reduce their public deficits and curtail runaway spending. Regional leaders would face sanctions, including impeachment and suspension from holding public office for a certain time, if they do not comply with the rules. With the law of autonomies enforced, which separates certain
regional powers from the government, no doubt this part of the law will be challenged before the Constitutional Court.
T
he transparency law sounds fine and dandy and may look good on paper, but there are a lot of flaws. First, many of its components, such as measures in keeping clean government free from corruption, are already covered in the country’s criminal code. There are restrictions that have been established concerning public contracts that, apparently, have been ignored by many government officials. The law will also be lacking because it exempts the Royal Family from any type of openness regarding how they spend the public money allotted to them annually. The PP government insists that King Juan Carlos’ decision last year to make public certain information concerning his expenditures is sufficient enough. The data the king has started to post on the royal website, of course, is general and doesn’t include how much his family spends on meals, clothes and trips.
W
ith the internet so accessible to just about every Spaniard, the proposed law doesn’t address how, if at all, easier it will be to download data from official websites. Anyone who has tried to use a Spanish government webpage knows how cumbersome and confusing it can be. One page that comes to mind is the Finance Ministry’s tax agency (AEAT) website. Just trying to determine where to surf to get last year’s tax information for your filings is always a headache because the page is frequently being “upgraded.” In other words, upgrading means more concealing.
T
he transparency and good governance law indeed has its flaws, but it is a start. Rajoy seems to be taking all the credit for its introduction, but last year the Socialists had toyed around with the idea of coming up with an open government measure. However, according to the Zapatero Cabinet at the time, there wasn't enough time to draft it before November's general election.
L
et’s see just how open government will become under this new regulation.

“Go on, give us a tennerâ€? campaign A few weeks ago, we ran a feature on what Cudeca do with the money they receive at events, in their shops etc. Following that article, Cudeca had their annual presentation of accounts and medical reports as well as telling us what they had been doing, what they are aiming for for the future, a presentation of their accounts plus their Golden Pin awards. Speakers for the day were, of course, Joan Hunt OBE who is the founder and President of the Cudeca Foundation, Rafael Olalla Martinez – director of finance and deputy director, and Marissa Martin RosellĂł who is their medical director. Also present was Ricardo Urdiales GĂ lvez, Cudeca Trustee and the lawyer who set up their first mandate for the foundation. Joan Hunt told the gathered crowd why Cudeca was set up saying that her husband had been told in 1991 that he had an incurable illness. In those days there was no such thing as Cudeca and, in Malaga there was no such thing as a hospice. The only people who could be of any
help whatsoever was a small team – that included Marissa Roselló – dealing in paliative care at the Red Cross in Malaga. This is where Joan Hunt’s husband spent his last few weeks. After that, Joan decided that nobody else should be in that position and that is where the dream of Cudeca started. At a lunch in 1991, Joan explained her vision to Marissa and some others, including Susan Hannon who until her retirement last year was Cudeca’s chief palliative care nurse, and that was when it all started to take off. Fund-raising events led to people asking for help as well as some money coming in and in 1999 gave Benalmadena Cudeca the land where the hospice now stands. She explained that all staff felt that it was an honour and a privilege to share the patients’ last weeks with them and to help them manage and overcome their problems with the disease.
generated by selling property that had been bequeathed them and this, of course could not be relied on for future years. The income from donations from the community was â‚Ź242,510. From events held it was â‚Ź305,966, from “Rastrillosâ€? and sales was â‚Ź547,322 and from “Friends of Cudecaâ€? it was â‚Ź208,238. The income from inheritances and the selling of properties left in bequests to Cudeca was â‚Ź1,184,594. The breakdown of this is that 34% came from inheritances, 20% came from the Cudeca shops, 12% from donations, 11% from public subventions, 10% from events, 6% from members (Friends), 5% from banks, 1% from interest earned and 1% from other sources. As far as expenses went, the total expenses for the financial year 2011 were â‚Ź3.13 million. These were made up with 74% going on direct care, 11% being spent on the shops including rent and
To finish, Joan explained that with an ageing population the demands for palliative care and Cudeca’s services is bound to increase in the coming years. Also, the Spanish population is beginning to understand what palliative care is all about – something the Spanish haven’t had in any great measure before, unlike the British, so that even more demands will be made on the services Cudeca has to offer. Marissa Martin Roselló, chief medical director then gave the assembled audience a slideshow demonstration of Cudeca’s growth and the many awards that have been bestowed on the organisation through the years. Rafael Olalla Martinez took the floor next explaining how Cudeca had used the previous year’s income. The figures were a great improvement on previous years but it had to be pointed out that a lot of the income had been

So, what can you do to help Cudeca? As we said in our last feature on Cudeca, if every foreign resident who is registered in the Malaga areas padrons gave just ₏10 a year to the foundation it would ensure the continued running of the hospice and Cudeca’s services – and that’s just those of us who are registered. Imagine the funds that could be raised therefore if everyone who had a holiday home here and weren’t registered also gave! It would allow Cudeca to make plans for the future to
be able to look after even more people with terminal illnesses and, don’t forget, their services are always offered free of charge to the patients and their families. We all go to the odd “do and happily part with a tenner for raffle tickets for a bottle of sometimes rather dodgy wine or we go to a bar and part with another tenner for a couple of drinks. Part of life, and it’s enjoyment of course, but think of the good that same tenner could do for people who desperately need Cudeca’s help. So, go on, give us a tenner – you never know when it could turn out to be you or a loved one who needs their help! Go to www.cudeca.org to find out more about the organisation and how you can do your bit to help.

Community News Conservatives Photos AUDITION Abroad dinner galore NOTICE The Conservatives Abroad association met on Friday night for dinner, dancing and an after dinner speech by the Right Honourable Eric Pickles. The evening started with canapés and drinks at the bar then moved into the restaurant for a lovely five course meal before Mr Pickles explained the ideas behind various things the coalition government in the UK are carrying out and what it is they are trying to achieve. With the Budget just behind him, he explained that the government want to get people back to work and off the benefits system. He told the story of a young lad whose siblings, parents and grandparents either were or had been on the dole. The young lad got a job, although low paid, and the family were all nagging him to leave the job and go back on the dole as the rest of them were. However, he had a good boss who explained to him
that, unlike the rest of his family who weren’t working, he had the opportunity of working his way up, making more money and, when he eventually got married, of carrying on the work ethic through his own family. The boy decided to stay, enrolled himself on a university course and is now well on his way to having a responsible well paid career. Mr Pickles then told his audience a little of his He was background. brought up in a strictly Labour household and one of his ancestors had been one of the founding members of a trade union. He was not brought up in a Conservative family but decided that this was the way he felt was right for him. He is currently the Minister for Communities and Local Government. The evening went extremely well with everyone enjoying themselves.

Coastline gets Top of e Pops!
The Coin Branch of the Royal British Legion held its annual Photographic Competition at the Miralmonte Bar and Restaurant on Wednesday the 21st of March. The subject was “Markets” and submissions were judged in 3 categories: Category 1 was open to branch members not in the photographic group, Category 2 was open to photographic group members and Category 3 was open to everyone and reserved for digitally enhanced photographs.
Director Peter Mitchell will be holding a workshop to discuss characters at the Salon Varietes Theatre on Sunday April 1st at 4.30pm and to discuss the forthcoming production of the smash hit musical “Guys and Dolls” which will be presented at the theatre in October.
The programme is introduced by Kim Robson who also presents a daily programme on Guildford’s Eagle FM back in Surrey. Coastline’s managing director, Dennis Gardner, said “We’ve taken note of listener feedback and are coming a bit more up to
date on Sundays; after a long run, we’ve ditched the Beatles Hour on Sundays and are working towards refreshing some of our other programmes too”. Top of The Pops was definitely a hit – on line listening figures showed that more people tuned in on 4th March at 7pm than had the week before. Coastline’s listening figures are on the up again too, with more and more people listening on line as well as on FM. Audience figures online jumped a further 21% between November 2011 and the end of February 2012 with loads more people listening on FM, particularly inland.

It is a popular misconception that all dogs can swim, but this is not always the case. You must attempt to empty the dog's lungs of water as soon as possible. Place the dog's head lower than its body, open its mouth and begin to pump the chest by pressing down on the ribs and releasing the pressure immediately. Repeat at five-second intervals.
Choking Sometimes a piece of stick, bone or small rubber ball
may get stuck in a dog's throat. Your dog may be unable to breath as a result and swift action is necessary. Open the dog's mouth carefully and see if you can see the object. Pumping the chest, as in the case of drowning (see above) may dislodge the foreign body. Get your dog to the vet as soon as possible where the object can be removed under anaesthetic.
Adopting a Pet - part one Often a puppy will not be suitable for you for one reason or another so adopting a senior pet may well be the answer. The older, more mature dog will normally give you all the love a puppy will but will be possibly quieter and need less walking so, for an older
person, an older dog would be ideal. The upcoming holiday season may be an excellent time to put some balance in your life and adopt a senior pet. Senior pets can and do bond very strongly with adopters. Many seem to understand they have been given another chance at a happy life and are grateful for the opportunity to love someone and be loved in return. Consulate conference gives good advice Tuesday morning saw Duncan Burrell from The News Helpdesk attending a conference given by the British Consulate Malaga that informed us of what to do in many situations including robbery and theft – both from the home and in the street, a report from Trafico on what to do about fines in respect of drink driving, licences, accidents and legal paperwork pertaining to these situations. Around 70 people attended the conference and we will be running a series of articles in the next few weeks to tell you what happened. The British Consulate in Malaga is one of the busiest in the world dealing with some 70 deaths a month, 60-70 arrests a month, 2530 serious injuries resulting in hospitalisation, and help with repatriation. At a recent inland roadshow, one of the questions asked was “What number should you dial in an emergency?” 60% of those present answered: “999”! Wrong, it’s 112 which is the main emergency number where you can speak to somebody in English. The local police came out with some very useful tips and advice on what to do in the case of robberies or assaults on the person and what to do to avoid it which we will cover in the coming weeks in more depth. One of the topics we shall touch on this week is Cybercrime and some useful tips on how to avoid it.
“Keyloggers” are people that log into your computer remotely and can see everything you type, including bank account numbers and all manner of personal information. They then sell on the information to a third party. Keyloggers can only be prosecuted for invasion of privacy as it’s the third party who actually commit the crimes such as fraud. Obviously do not put things such as the fact that you may be going on holiday on social network pages. It will not just be your best friend that you’re telling. There are many people who scour these sites and they will then know that your house is empty – do not invite a burglar into your home this way. “Farming” is where you are directed to a mirror site of where you think you are logging on to. This is very common in online banking where you will be putting in passwords, account numbers and all sorts of personal information. Some of the useful tips to do with working with your computer are: 1. Stick to the system you know 2. Visit trusted sites only 3. Don’t allow anybody else to control your site – ebay is a very common one where you can pay someone else for goods – only pay ebay or via paypal. If you have to pay the seller and you’re desperate to have what they’re selling make sure you get all their details including their address, bank details etc.,
If you are shopping online at, for instance ebay or Amazon, it’s a good idea to have a separate bank card with a maximum of, say €100 spend power, hence limiting any rogues spending power should your details be passed on. Obviously, it is up to you to use some common sense so ask yourself the following: “If I’ve just won the lottery in Nigeria, but I’ve never bought a ticket even though someone has emailed me that I have, how could I possibly have won?” You haven’t ... it’s a scam: “If I’ve never asked for a loan, why is my bank telling me they’re giving me one and need my bank details?” Remember, a bank will never contact you by email so, you haven’t got a loan approved and yep, it’s another scam. “Why have I got a parking ticket to pay in Timbuktu when I’ve never been there?” The police, again like the banks, will not contact you by email so don’t pay it, it’s yet another scam. And finally, if you’re far Eastern secret girlfriend hasn’t got the money for her ticket home, don’t be tempted to pay for the ticket and dump her and run – it’s, yes, you’ve guessed it, another scam! More on this soon.

‘Liability for damage caused by hunting dogs’
The next film in English at the La Trocha cinema in Coín is now confirmed as the sometimes funny/sometimes sad film, “The Descendants”starring George Clooney and Beau Bridges. This films’is both moving and funny –- a humorous and heartfelt film with universal themes of love, family, life and death, betrayal, and forgiveness set against the beautiful backdrop of Hawaii. The film is getting great critical reaction plus awards’ buzz. There will be three showings: 8.20 pm on Thursday 29th March, 6.00 pm and 8.20 pm on Monday 2nd April. The box office will open at about 5.30pm every day.
In many areas of our province rural properties are located in, or close to, areas reserved for hunting (Cotos or Reservas de Caza). It is fairly normal in Spain that hunters are accompanied by their own dogs, but these dogs can sometimes cause damage to neighbouring properties. Spanish law dictates that hunters must be licensed with the local authority and if they hunt with dogs, they must take out an insurance policy for Civil Liability. Therefore damage caused by hunting dogs or other animals is one of the few cases of strict liability under the eyes of the law, so that compensation is virtually automatic unless it is proven that the other party, the victim, was to blame. Recently, De Cotta Law successfully defended a client who suffered damage by hunting dogs. The victim owned a house near a hunting reserve, and his property is used for the breeding of parrots and other exotic birds. It was on one occasion that the owner returned to his property to find that several birds had been

attacked by dogs, resulting in the serious injury and death of many of them. However, the local ‘Guardia Civil’ were able to locate and apprehend the owners of the dogs and therefore a case was brought against the hunters. In court, De Cotta Law successfully acted for the breeder of the exotic birds and was able to secure compensation of some 6,000 euro; which was paid by the insurance company of the hunting dog owners. This is an interesting case as it is clearly underlines that dog owners should be aware that they are liable for the damage their animals cause, and that they must have adequate insurance cover. In addition the case also shows that if one suffers damage or loss caused by a dog or other animal, there is the opportunity to seek financial compensation.

A small gem in the countryside ‌ and a bit of a bang to keep it safe for people to live in
P
izarra is a tiny town lying 30 kilometres upriver in the Guadalhorce valley at the foot of the 350 metre high Sierra del Hacho. Still a largely farming community, it has so far managed to avoid the threat of absorption by the spreading metropolis of MĂĄlaga in spite of the recent appearance of the two commuter settlements of Zalea and Cerralba on its western face.
I
n 1483 a hundred settlers arrived, led by the indefatigable Don Pedro Romero de Figueroa, and determined to build a town. The reason for the reluctance of earlier people to put down roots in the spot was an eminently practical one. High above it was a huge, unstable rock, forever threatening to crash down upon them. The rock, known as the peĂąasco, was more than 5000 cubic metres in volume and weighed almost 3000 tons.
It continued to threaten those brave, crazy or fatalistic enough to live beneath it until 1988 when, after it showed definite signs of cracking, the authorities finally blew it up.
I
t was still there in 1922 when the palace of the Conde de Puerto Hermos was used for the Conference of Pizarra, when leading politicians and soldiers gathered in an attempt to find a solution to
the war then raging in Spanish Morocco. The count had built his palace in the 19th century, after buying the land cheaply. The palace still stands in the centre of town, but is in private hands and not open to the public.
O
ne place that is most definitely open to the public is Pizarra's Municipal Museum. The village owes this jewel in its crown to the American painter Gino Hollander, who spent many
years in the town. Beginning in the 1960s he amassed an impressive array of archĂŚological artefacts from many eras, including the Roman and the Moorish. When he
eventually left Spain to return to America, his collection came into the hands of the local authorities, who took over a disused farm complex and turned it into the museum.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
e Cabin in the Woods he other night before he movie is set around Tthrough bed, I was flicking Tthe period in Potter´s life the channels and before she was published.
Director: Drew Goddard starring: Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Chris Hemsworth Every few years, a horror movie comes along which promises to revitalise the genre, sometimes for the better (‘Night of the Living Dead, ‘Ringu’), sometimes not (‘Saw’, ‘Hostel’). From the pen of ‘Buffy’ creator Joss Whedon and Cloverfield’s scribe Drew Goddard, ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ doesn’t so much set out to reinvigorate horror as pick it apart, analyse it, laugh at it, and then blow it to smithereens just for kicks. It’s the funniest horror film since ‘Evil Dead 2’, the
smartest since ‘New Nightmare’, and without doubt one of the most breathlessly entertaining and original movies of the year. It begins with an apparent non sequitur, as working stiffs Hadley (Richard Jenkins) and Sitterson (Bradley Whitford) discuss babyproofing in an anonymous office building. Cut to a gang of nubile twentysomethings, heading off to a remote cabin for fun, frolics and fornication. But how
might these two stories possibly connect? And what’s really going on in the cabin, with its two-way mirrors, mysterious forcefields and a basement crammed with occult artefacts? On one level, ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ is simply a demonically enjoyable rollercoaster: Whedon’s knack for a snappy, offbeat one-liner remains unmatched, while firsttime director Goddard’s control of his action setpieces (of which there are
many) is truly impressive. But this is also a film with a hell of a lot to say: about the role of horror in our lives, about the questionable morality of audience manipulation, about the banality of modern evil. None of this is explored in any great depth – that would get in the way of all the fun – but it’s still remarkable to see a mainstream movie touch on so many fascinating, powerful ideas without losing sight of its prime directive: to scare the socks off its audience.

don’t know why someone Iknow thought we needed to the ins and outs of the Beatrix Potter’s personal life. Who really wants to watch a movie about a 39-year-old woman who is still living a home with her parents? This so-called “bio-pic” was basically a period version of “Bridget Jones” – Renee Zellwegger mooning about, nobody wants her, she’s rather strange and has the same bad English accent. hris Noonan's direction is C all over the place, the movie felt rushed in places, and is accomplished in others. Yet, strangely, he doesn't seem to be able to place the camera to get effective use in what are the many static "talky" scenes. His direction of the actors has them all spouting the lines at a level of barelysuppressed hysteria. It's as if somebody had sent spiked Cool-Aid back in time and topped up their teacups with it.
start in a relationship with a reclusive actress. A sexy, stylish gangster thriller bristling with wit and brutal intrigue, it stars Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley as star-crossed lovers who run foul of one of London’s most vicious crime bosses. Mitchel ('Colin Farrell' ) has just got out of jail and wants to stay legitimate. His friends involved in the messy world of the London underground fear him and want him to join them again but Mitchel tries his best to stay away. He gets himself a job as a bodyguard for a retired actress Charlotte (Keira Knightley) who is still hot news for the paparazzi.
came across the Beatrix Potter movie. Normally I would have turned it off, but I found myself mesmerized by Renee Zellwegger’s face and not in the good way. You see, as a child I was very fond of the “Peter Rabbit” stories, however when the “Miss Potter” movie came out, I never felt the need to see it.
Mitchell, through his friend Billy eventually meets the underground Don by the name of Gant (Ray Winstone) who wants Mitch to work for him because of Mitch's reputation. While working together Mitch and Charlotte fall in
love. Gant asks Billy to get the guy who sent Mitch to jail but it turns out to be the wrong one. Gant kills the guy in front of Mitch and lets Mitch know that he has to work for him now that Mitch has seen him commit the murder but Mitch refuses.
It's 1902 and Beatrix Potter is being stifled by her socialladder-climbing parents. Always a teller and writer of stories, Beatrix breaks free from her suffocation and takes her tale of Peter Rabbit to the Warne publishers – where she is pleasantly surprised to find a deal offered and young Norman Warne assigned personally to aid her in her first publishing venture. But as the pair start to fall in love, and the book takes off, the pressure from home threatens to derail her chance of happiness. he only explanation why Tchildren's Potter's illustrated books made her successful was because they were done in colour. Potter is shallowly presented as an artistic dreamer, when she was quite the opposite. It might come as a surprise to the audience that she had such a wealthy upbringing in the very lap of luxury, when her children's books describe an anthropomorphic world of bucolic farm animals and garden pests, set among rustic cottages and hedgerows. owever, one of the H strange things in this movie, is that on more than one occasion you see Potter talking to her illustrations and – even weirder – the illustrations move. I don´t know if Noonan was making out that Potter was delusional, but it was a bit odd to say the least. part from the fact that A this movie is filled with anachronisms, the story is pretty pointless. I think it is safe to say that this is one to miss!

You may been wishing long and hard for something, waiting for something to shift, open or change. If you direct your thoughts you will find that they hold tremendous potency but you could be feeling impulsive preferring to take action first and think about the effects later on. If you direct this energy towards obtaining certain goals and desires, knowing what you are going to do and why, this can be an incredible time in your life. The simple truth is that all that negativity and restrictions of the past are over and done with, you have entered a new phase that allows your sign's qualities of leadership and position to shine through. The days of following behind others are done, this however, means summoning up your inner courage and strength and not allowing your fears or habits of the past to hold you back any longer. Financial and material areas of life need re-assessment. More than perhaps ever in your life have you had to pay attention to every thought and every step. You have been humbled in discomforting ways in the past year and you will be shortly coming out the other side of that tunnel. You have a naturally born role and claim it with confidence and certain others will have no choice but to stop, listen and invest in you. Never underestimate the talents you have been given. Change is possible - something does not have to stay the same forever and healing can take place. You may find that new desires rise up from within based on recent changes and findings. The only real way forward is to make choices for the right reasons, no matter what they look like, that are best for all. A rare sort of inner courage will fill you now, make the very most of it. Advancements or a promotion could occur.
Something that held you back in the past may also used as a reason or excuse not to move forward now. However, some restrictions are loosening their chains over you and there is no reason any more not to go full steam ahead. You can see through the games and drama that others are using and instead of settling for mediocrity September 23rd - you have a shot at excellence. The more you move forward the richer your life will be in both wealth and overall happiness. October 22nd

LESSON
August 23rd September 22nd
You will probably be better off if you can find a way to work on your own this week. Avoid conflict where possible but do not back down from going after your hopes, dreams and goals. You must keep in mind what you want and where you are trying to get to in the future. The effort and quality you put in now can pay off big later on for you. If some things seem slow bear in mind that certain things need to happen in the right order for the optimal outcome.
Liking and loving SCORPIO
October 23rd November 21st
A situation may have tried to drag you down and you may for a few days let it get the better of you. You are now finding a way to feel far better about a recent burden. Either you released your responsibilities connected to a certain situation or you let go of your attachment to the outcome. Relationships across the board are deepening and increasing in meaning. More fun and adventure are about to appear in your life too.
SAGITTARIUS A lot of people could be wondering how on earth you are going to handle things,
it is as if most individuals seem to be walking around in a dazed and confused state. That means you need to keep moving forward with confidence and determination, take your time and make sure the things you do are done with precision. Creatively November 22nd - you will have bursts of energy with your mind racing as innovation burns through December 21st you like wild fire.
CAPRICORN You are in a reflective mood lately, you could feel that you have reached a point
where time is more precious than gold. The home and the heart are important to you and you will be striving to make choices that stem from these issues. This is a time of stability for you with promises of wealth and prosperity, the main key is to December 22nd - remain on the path and try not to mess things up for yourself. Do the things that January 19th will bring you positive results.

February 19th March 20th
If you have a desire to change something this week, feel it with all your heart and then speak up. This is not the time to give up, turn away or decide to make radical changes to your current path or direction, the idea is to take it all in, but to resist taking impulsive action. You could be influenced by powerful emotions that may not be telling the whole story just yet. Just be patient and allow events to develop in their own natural time.
Down to earth time for you and you will likely be getting in touch with what holds the greatest meaning for you on the material plane. Something will give you a reason to feel better about what you already have and what you are soon to gain. Make sure that you communicate honestly with deliberation and you will find that you attract what you seek. Times like these remind you to remain in the moment and not to get too far ahead of yourself.
To translate the simple idea of liking something into Spanish is not as straightforward as one would wish. The appropriate verb is gustar but it literally means to be pleasing to. Rather than going into long drawn-out and excruciatingly boring grammatical explanations, let's just look at some examples which you should be able to chop and change to fit in with whatever you want to say. Me gusta la paella - I like paella No me gusta el gazpacho - I don't like gazpacho Me gusta jugar al golf - I like playing golf No me gusta jugar al tenis - I don't like playing tennis ¿Te gusta ir de compras? - Do you like going shopping? ¿No te gusta ir de paseo? - Don't you like going for walks? Le gusta means either he or she likes. You should know by the context who it is being talked about Nos gusta - We like and Les gusta - They like Now. if instead of saying that you like something, you want to say that you would like something, it changes to Me gustaría Me gustaría ir a Australia - I would like to go to Australia Me gustaría comprar un coche nuevo - I would like to buy a new car. ¿Te gustaría venir al cine? - Would you like to come to the cinema? And if you want to say you love something, (but not someone - that's a different verb) you use encantar in exactly the same way as gustar. Me encanta vivir en España - I love living in Spain Me encanta ir al teatro - I love going to the theatre and, of course, Me encantaría is I would love Me encantaría visitar las cuevas de Nerja - I would love to visit the caves in Nerja. Ya está - That's it Hasta el próximo - Until next time. Valerie Valerie runs the Centro Idiomas Language School in Coin. Her books, “The First Twelve Shortcuts to Spanish” , “The Second Twelve Shortcuts to Spanish” (€5 each) and “The Verb Book” (€7) are available from The News office in Coin, Woody’s Cards and Books in Los Boliches, David’s Books in Los Boliches or by email from vjeffrey1@fastmail.fm . e Voice wasn’t quite the hit it should be.. … and it needs quite a bit of tweaking to get it right Sir Tom Jones, Jessie J, Danny O’Donoghue and will.i.am turned out on Saturday night to pick ten each from the people auditioning for a place for the chance to be coached by one of these four top people in the current music scene. The format sounded like a good idea.A number of singers went on stage with the audience facing them to give it all they had, while the four judges swung their chairs around so they were not influenced by the way the singers looked – thus the title of the show as they should have only been influenced by The Voice. So far so good. What actually happend was a bit like seeing Britain’s Got Talent
singers but with blinkers on. Once the judges decided they would like to work with someone, they hit a big red button on a table in front of what appeared to be an oversized airline chair and the whole unit swung round. No button pressed ... no swinging round to see what you’d missed before the end of the performance. But, and here’s the big but, if more than one judge pressed the button, the singer got to choose who would mentor them and hopefully win the competition. Two of the singers came out and sung Jessies J songs – but only one chose her as a mentor and Ms J seemed rather peeved that the second girl didn’t choose her
but went for will.i.am (what sort of a name is that anyway?) instead. Another of the singers was a chap who had sung in the boy band “Five” a few years ago, but he didn’t get picked by anybody so off home he went. A couple turned up who had both entered the competition, she later than he. He, Max Milner got picked by all the judges and chose Danny as his mentor and madcap YouTube hit Ben Kelly made you see why he’d had over a million hits. The problem with the show? The judges were apparently in a competition all their own and seemed on occasion to forget to vote in time. More next week.
Judges (left to right) Jessie J, Danny O’Donaghue, will.i.am & Tom Jones
A new superstar in the first week? Strange place for The other talent show back for this year’s efforts was Britain’s Got Talent with two new judges. Alesha Dixon seems to think that all she has to do is laugh to be amusing. However, Simon Callow’s rabbit out of the hat was now-man David Walliams and when a couple on roller skates appeared on stage ... well, need we say more?! The show came across as far slicker than The Voice, which is an American import (review of the first week above) but has had a few years’ head start to get it right. Even so, the first week’s ratings certainly went to BGT and the acts were as weird as ever, to whit: Barbara and Bradley, known collectively as “Barbara and Bradley”, had
an act born out of too much time spent behind a closed door where society can’t see: Barbara did an impenetrable poem, while the portly Bradley wore a ten-gallon hat and danced uninterpretively behind her. “It started when I had a Siamese cat and it died,” Barbara said of her muse. “Also, I was on the Kilroy show.” Bradley wasn’t bad value either: “My special talent will hopefully bring Barbara’s poetry back to life,” he deadpanned. So they were well suited, but Barbara squished any thoughts of a physical connection: “We’re not in any relationship because he looks like an owl, doesn’t he?” You simply couldn’t make it up, could you? As time ticked down you knew a belting act was on
the way and if you didn’t, Simon Cowell helpfully flagged it up by turning his nose up at Jonathan Antoine, a 17-year-old with the hair, build and dress sense of Hurley from Lost. Cowell turned to Carmen Electra who was standing in for Amanda Holden and murmured, “Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse …” In the pre-act interview Jonathan stood with his friend Charlotte Jaconelli who, they said, had stuck up for Jonathan when he was being picked on. He said she’d boosted his confidence after a lifetime of taunts about his weight. When asked by Cowell (who clearly assumed Jonathan would hold back Charlotte) who thought it was a good idea to perform together she replied: “Our singing teacher”. With that the couple launched into their performance and by the end of it Jonathan’s amazing tenor voice, coupled with Charlotte’s show-songs style had everybody on their feet and Cowell trying to persuade him to dump Charlotte. His reply? “We came here as a couple, we’re staying as a couple.” The votes from the judges were three “Yes’s”
despite Cowell’s voiced reservations about them going through together. Cowell said later to Walliams that we just may have seen the new Pavarotti. The judges were obviously ashamed at having dismissed Jonathan on the basis of his looks. And to see the look on this previously persecuted young man’s face when he realised how much everyone in the audience had instantly fallen in love with him and his voice was something to behold. If you missed it all on Saturday, have a look at www.youtube.com and search for Jonathan Antoine audition – Britain’s Got Talent 2012. If you have a dry eye by the end of it, go look for your heart because you must have lost it somewhere and don’t forget his name – he’s going to be big in success as well as stature!
a honeymoon
Gareth and Rachel Mawsdley are both in the armed forces and enjoyed a fairytale wedding at a Georgian manor house last year. However, they were only able to spend a few nights together before predeployment training began for their respective tours of Afghanistan. 35-year-old Rachel is a Squadron Leader in the RAF while husband Gareth, 32, is a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy. Both began a six-month spell at Camp Bastion in November last year so they decided to have their honeymoon in Helmand province and mark their first six months of marriage in a steakhouse on the desert base. Gareth said. “There’s no alcohol on base so instead of a bottle of wine we shared a bottle of
pop. As we shared some nachos, surrounded by US marines and everybody carrying weapons, we looked at each other and it was possible to imagine it was a normal romantic night back home.” – home being Bath in the West Country. The couple live in separate communal quarters on the base and rarely have time alone. They took part in the base’s half-marathon on New Year’s day and Rachel said they try and go for a run together or have a coffee so they have some time for each other. The couple will be returning to the UK in May and have already planned a “proper” honeymoon in Rwanda and Tanzania going on safari, doing a bit of trekking but, Gareth says: “most of all lie on the beach together”.

Survival’s ‘ick’ factor
Unlike fear, sadness or anger, psychologists have rarely given much importance to the feeling of disgust, until recently. Researchers now realise that disgust does more than cause a sick feeling in the stomach – it protects human beings from disease and parasites, and affects almost every aspect of human relations, from romance to politics. Valerie Curtis, a selfdescribed “disgustologist” from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, put it succinctly at a recent conference on disgust in Germany: “Disgust is in our everyday life. It determines our hygiene behaviours. It determines how close we get to people. It determines who we’re going to kiss, who we’re going to mate with, who we’re going to sit next to. It determines the people that we shun, and that is something that we do a lot of.” Her studies and those of other researchers may have practical benefits, including clues to obsessive compulsive disorder, some aspects of which – like excessive hand
washing – look like disgust gone wild. On the other hand, some researchers are trying to inspire more disgust at dirt and germs to promote hand washing and improve public health. Dr. Curtis is involved in efforts in Africa, India and England to explore what she calls “the power of trying to gross people out”. One slogan that appeared to be effective in England in getting people to wash their hands before leaving a bathroom was “Don’t bring the toilet with you.” Dr Curtis said the power of disgust to affect behaviour is unquestioned, and that power ought to be put to good use. In one of her projects, she worked with an Indian public relations agency to come up with a disgust-based campaign to encourage hand washing among mothers in small villages, which could save countless

and let us help you find that light at the end of the tunnel! children’s lives lost to diarrhoea and other diseases. The result was is a skit involving a supermom and a disgusting, dirty man. The man makes sweets using mud and worms, stops in the middle of the performance to rush off because he has diarrhoea, never washes his hands and does everything possible to be revolting. Supermom on the other hand is scrupulously clean. Her children don’t get sick, the skit makes that quite
clear. In fact, her baby grows up to be a doctor. She washes her hands all the time. The prominence of diarrhoea in the skit is no accident. Dr. Curtis said it was important to talk about the very things that disgust us, because they often present dangers to public health. “We need to talk about excrement,” she said, using a punchier singlesyllable word for maximum effect. “Which is worse?” she asked. “To talk about it, or to let kids die?”
'Pain-free needle' Scots try out in the works lung cancer test Screening for a pilot project involving 10,000 Scots who have smoked 20 cigarettes a day for at least 20 years is due to start before the end of 2012, with the first results to be reported before the end of 2014. Scientists have been working for years to help people with injectionphobia, as well as the doctors and dentists who have to deal with stressed patients. Now it looks as if a Somerset-based inventor may have come up with the solution. Oliver Blackwell's device looks like a typical syringe – with one crucial difference. On the front is a much smaller needle which injects a tiny amount of local anaesthetic to ease the pain of the larger needle which follows. The first virtually pain-free injection
paves the way for the second one, which is rendered painless. Meanwhile, in the United States researchers are trying to find a way to avoid needles altogether. They have tested a vaccine patch on mice, which cuts out the need for painful needles. Instead, the patch has hundreds of microscopic needles which dissolve into the skin. The researchers said that one day it could be used to enable people to vaccinate themselves against flu, for example.
The News Help Desk was set up about a month ago to deal with all the questions we were getting from our readers. So far we have managed to sort out problems relating to buying and legalising cars, checking whether or not they have any outstanding fines or taxes payable on them, problems relating to mobile phone companies and telefonica, whether it is possible or not to legalise some campo houses, and also, of course any problems you may be having with the health system here. So whatever you need help with, don’t despair - call Duncan Burrell on
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK, and Scotland has one of the highest rates of lung cancer in the world. Fewer than nine per cent of lung cancer patients are alive five years after diagnosis, as
the disease is most often detected in the later stages when it is difficult to treat. Known as the EarlyCDTLung, the test detects a number of antibodies produced by the body's immune system when a patient has lung cancer. At the end of the four year trial, the NHS will analyse the results to decide whether the test is a costeffective screening tool for lung cancer.

four years now but what is the alternative? My oncologist said I must not miss one tablet as they WILL Save My Life. The alternative is – do I want cancer again, NO thank you! – been there, do not want to have that nightmare again. The only thing missing from your report is whether when the five years are over and
you have the all clear, do the side effects go away? A question to be asked and answered. To all the women out there suffering this terrible disease, good heath for the future. Editor says: We will look into this and report back but, in the meantime – keep taking the tablets and stay as well as you can.
by email prisoners, unconvicted prisoners and civil prisoners can vote if they are on the electoral register) and e)anyone found guilty within the previous five years of corrupt or illegal practices in connection with an election.
It also states those who cannot vote in a UK general election are: a) members of the House of Lords (although they can vote at elections to local authorities, devolved legislatures and the European Parliament), b) EU citizens resident in the UK (although they can vote at elections to local authorities, devolved legislatures and the European Parliament), c) anyone other than British, Irish and qualifying Commonwealth citizens, d) convicted persons detained in pursuance of their sentences (though remand
However, as long as you can prove that you were on an electoral rôle up to 15 years ago, you can still either vote at the polling station in that same area or by a postal vote. Interestingly enough you would also have to be a Spanish national to be able to vote in a Spanish general election although, as British subjects, we can vote in local elections as long as we are residents in Spain and registered on the empadron in the area in which we live.

kindest things you can do for your four-legged friend. It is not cruel, only if you leave them in there all day and night. If a dog is crate trained as a puppy (or little by little if an older dog) it will feel safe, secure and will always have somewhere to go when tired or grumpy. A crate-trained dog will not be stressed when in a cage for travelling, when at the vet overnight or after an operation – it is a duty to make sure your

animals are happy in a crate! If you leave your dog in a crate (if necessary) when you are out, he will be safe and will not pee or chew the furniture or electrocute himself and in turn, will not be shouted at and stressed when you return. Of course, some dogs are perfectly happy to be left free, we are talking about the ones who chew or endanger themselves. Crate training is a choice but I wish people wouldn't see it as cruel!

ext month marks the 55th anniversary of BBC TV’s ‘The Sky At Night’. It was on 24th April 1957 that an amateur astronomer called Patrick Moore was offered a six-month trial TV programme about astronomy aimed at the novice astronomer. Now after more than 710 episodes ‘The Sky At Night’ has become the longest running TV programme with the same presenter in television history. Sir Patrick Moore OBE (as he is now known) is 89 years old and has presented all but one of the monthly shows. With his trade mark monocle, dishevelled hair and badly fitting suits he has become one of the most recognisable characters on TV.
A
nd what a character he is! I have met him on several occasions and he is a genuinely warm and very funny bloke. He has got a wicked sense of humour and is quite happy to poke fun at himself and not take himself too seriously at all. His biography ’80 not out’ is both very funny and very moving when he talks about ‘his girl’ being killed during the war and now, after all these years, he can sometimes go for almost a whole hour without thinking about her– but not often.
H
e has done more to raise awareness and public interest in astronomy than any other person and will be sadly missed if and when he finally decides to retire – or pass awaywhichever comes first! He is probably the only person still living who has personally met Albert Einstein, the Wright Brothers, Yuri Gagarin and Neil Armstrong. And after all this he still calls himself an amateur astronomer and professional journalist.
T
o celebrate the 55 years of the programme Sir Patrick has devised a list of 55 objects, known as the Moore 55, to be spotted by amateur astronomers around the world and you are invited to join in. Beginning on Tuesday 3rd April and then every Tuesday night throughout April the Mijas Astronomy Society are holding a series of observing sessions designed to complete the whole list. My friend Lee Osborne is organising this special marathon along with the other members of the society and is opening it up to anyone who would like to go
along and have the chance to see some of the wonders of the sky using high powered telescopes.
E
ach session begins at 8.00 p.m. and runs until about midnight. The objects on the list begin with spotting particular craters and mountain ranges on the Moon, then moves onto more difficult objects such as details on the surface of Mars, the phase of Venus and the moons of Jupiter. The rings of Saturn are always a crowd pleaser and at the moment they are looking splendid.
T
hen it’s on to deep space objects such as galaxies and nebulae, the North Star, double stars and star clusters. It is a really comprehensive list covering the most spectacular objects in the night sky and with Lee’s help I guarantee an ‘out of this world’ evening! Lee and other members of the English speaking society have some very impressive equipment including video cameras that can show the images direct onto a computer screen.
L
ee Osborne can be contacted directly at info@astronomycostadelsol.com for further details and directions to the viewing site.
T
his is a really great opportunity for adults and especially school children to get involved in this special event and even tick off the objects on their own personal list. I have reproduced the whole Moore 55 list on my website that can be printed out and taken along with you.
S
ir Patrick Moore will be hosting a special ‘Sky At Night’ programme on BBC1 next Sunday night 1st April covering the Moore 55 marathon or check out the website www.bbc.co.uk/skyatnight. Happy Stargazing!

Osborne fuels more misery for motorists Motorists will endure more pain at the pumps after the Chancellor pressed ahead with fuel tax rises that will add nearly 4p a litre to already record prices. Drivers’ groups and hauliers said George Osborne had ‘turned his back on families’. From August 1st, fixed rate fuel duty will rise by 3.02p a litre to 60.97p. But when VAT is added, the rise becomes 3.62p a litre. It means the cost of filling a Ford Mondeo with a 70-litre fuel tank will increase by £2.54, adding £60 to the annual fuel bill.
Alonso masters the monsoon Superbowl Open Fernando Alonso's magnificent drive secured an unlikely victory for Ferrari at a hugely chaotic Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang. Few would have given Alonso a hope of gaining a 28th career victory given Ferrari's apparent lack of pace this season. But rain in Malaysia – so strong that there was a 50-minute suspension of the race after nine laps – played right into the Spaniard's hands. On a day which tested all the drivers’ patience, Sauber's Sergio Perez underlined his class and much talked about potential with an electrifying drive for second place. Lewis Hamilton meanwhile ended the day third for McLaren for the second consecutive weekend. Mark Webber and Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the top five, while Bruno Senna was another to drive superbly and claim sixth for Williams. Scot Paul di Resta grabbed seventh for Force

India, with Jean-Eric Vergne eighth ahead of Nico Hulkenberg, and Michael clinching Schumacher Mercedes' first point of the season in 10th. With the field on intermediate tyres as the race began in showery conditions, Hamilton must have thought he had done enough to avoid a repeat of Melbourne when he defended his line into turn one at the start. He stayed out in front as the weather worsened and eventually forced the suspension of the race. It eventually restarted
behind the safety car, with the McLarens holding their advantage when racing finally began on lap 13. But Hamilton suffered on his pitstop, it looked like the rear jackman was slow dropping the car, and then Hamilton had to wait for Massa to enter his pit, costing him the lead. Button, who had nipped ahead of his team-mate, then tangled with Karthikeyan with the race at his mercy. He had to stop for a new front wing and never recovered. That left Alonso and Perez out in
Quickest at the two Sepang visits, the Repsol Honda rider completed the sweep by deposing Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo from the head of the Sunday Jerez test timesheets by 0.173sec on his 61st and final lap. “Today we were really
pleased with the lap times we're running but I think we can still improve the bike quite a bit before the race here. Anyway we feel like we've made some progress on a track like this for us,” said Stoner.

But Perez was proving unshakable as he made ground on Alonso with every turn of his wheels. Having built up a sevensecond lead, Alonso saw it whittled away by Perez until he was just two seconds adrift. When the drivers made the switch to dryweather tyres Perez's decision to stay out for another lap cost him five seconds in the chase to Alonso, but in five pulsating laps he again closed rapidly back to Alonso. A first victory was there for the taking, but Perez ran wide when just half a second behind Alonso, losing precious seconds and the race for the lead was over. And Alonso, a veteran of 179 races, found a way to take the chequered flag and snatch the early lead in the drivers' championship.
The Annual Superbowl Open – now in it's 16th year – had generous new sponsors in the De Vere Group. The tournament consisted of pairs and triples competitions and was played in exceptional weather. The pairs semi finals saw Mike Old & Alex Brown (Benavista) defeat Andy Salmon (Superbowl) & Pamela Hatton (Santa Maria) whilst Mike Detheridge (Benalmadena) & Diana Johnson (Benavista) beat Pat Fisher & Denis Tolfree (Superbowl). The final was a very close affair, Mike Detheridge leading 10-5 after 12 ends found his team 14-10 down after 16 ends. He picked up a two on the seventeenth end to set up a close finish but was unable to match the close drawing ability of his opponents. The triples was played out in a similar format and
resulted in Mike Detheridge & Diana Johnson again reaching the final accompanied by Alan Plimmer (Benalmadena) where they played Richard Burroughs, Paco Sanchez and Tony Wright (Benavista). The game looked to be going comfortably in Mike Detheridge's favour with a 17-8 lead after 15 ends but a double on the 16th gave Richard's team a chance which they looked set to grasp with a dramatic 5 on the 17th leaving them needing just 2 on the last end to snatch an unlikely draw and force the extra end. The last end saw both teams drawing shot and nudging the jack but Mike's team held on, took a single and were worthy winners. The club wish to thank the De Vere Group for their generous sponsorship and the volunteer umpires and other people who helped ensure the tournament ran smoothly.

Woods wins Rugby referee sees red at Bay Hill Just two weeks after his latest injury scare, Tiger was looking as dominant as ever wearing his usual final day bright red shirt to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. It was his first PGA Tour victory since the sex scandal at the end of 2009 led to one of the greatest downfalls in sports. And with the first major of the year the Masters only two weeks away, Woods looks like he is ready to challenge once again for the majors record of Jack Nicklaus. Woods closed with a 2-under 70 and won by five shots over Graeme McDowell. "I think he really just kind of nailed home his comeback," McDowell said. "Great to have a frontrow seat watching maybe the greatest of all-time

anything," Woods said. "But it certainly feels really good."
Woods had gone 923 days and 26 tour events since he last posed with a trophy, and it showed. As he waited his turn to putt on the 18th, he was tapping his putter on the ground and could barely contain a grin, knowing that the longest PGA Tour drought of his career was about to end. When he tapped in for par, he clenched his fist, screamed out, "Yeah!" and hugged caddie, Joe LaCava.
The question two weeks ago was when would he play again. Now, it's whether he can get back to being the player who once ruled golf. It was the 16th time in his career that Woods has won by at least five shots, and it was the largest margin of victory on the PGA Tour since Rory McIlroy won the U.S. Open by eight.

Malaga were just starting to fight back, and had just scored a try, when an incident involving the referee shocked both sets of supporters, players and coaches alike. The referee (a senior 6ft4” player from Malaga Rugby Club), spotted a late tackle from the Axarquia No 8 on one of the Malaga backs. The referee ran towards the offence and everyone thought that a yellow card was about to be produced as punishment for the player … instead, the referee administered an unofficial punishment of his own. He ran towards the 16 year-old Axarquia player, who was on his knees getting up, and threw a full punch into the face of the boy, the sound of the crunch clearly heard

On Saturday 24th March 2012 at the University of Malaga Rugby Stadium, Malaga Rugby Club played host to their rivals from the Axarquia Rugby Club in a friendly fixture for the U18s. in the grandstand. Shock was all around. The referee then threw his whistle to the ground muttering “I don’t want to be a referee anymore” and effectively sent himself off for violent conduct. As he trudged off with his head held low, not surprisingly, the parents of the boy remonstrated with the referee over the assault on their son and called the National Police who turned up some minutes later to question to assailant. The Axarquia player was then taken to the nearby hospital for a check-up after he complained of soreness inside his ear. The match was abandoned. It later
transpired that the Malaga back who had been latetackled was the son of the referee. One seasoned supporter said, “I ve been watching rugby for over 40 years and have never seen anything like it. Rugby is a tough enough sport to play without having a referee physically assault a player! Incredible and unbelievable behaviour.” A club spokesman confirmed that they would be reporting the referee to the Andalucian Rugby Federation and would be talking to Malaga to ensure that the good relations between the clubs would be preserved.

Six South African Rugby players feared drowned The South African rugby fraternity is in mourning today after one player was confirmed dead and hopes fade for five of his team mates, who were also feared to have drowned after being caught in rip current on a beach near Port Elizabeth. Motherwell Rugby Football Club manager Mncedisi Mazomba appealled to British rugby fans ''to make something good come from this''. Mr Mazomba said: ''We are an amateur club and we play on an open field. Nothing can replace our players but we have heard we have a namesake club in Scotland. Maybe their hearts will be touched.'' Seventeen Motherwell players were among 21 people who were swept to sea from Bluewater Bay beach yesterday, sparking a

Lifeguards picked up 15 people immediately. The volunteer National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said one Motherwell player died after being brought to shore.
Mr Helm said the players had been jogging on the beach and had only been in the water for about 10 minutes. “Everything was peaceful, the sea was calm and they were up to their chests in the water. The next moment we just saw arms and hands in the air.''
Rip currents are a phenomenon whereby the sea turns back on itself when the shoreline cannot cushion the waves. Powerful channels of water flowing seaward can carry swimmers with them at a rate of up to 2 metres per second. One of the lifesavers involved in the rescue yesterday said it was ''incredibly traumatic''. Brendon Helm told Die Burger newspaper: “It is something I will always remember. Only eight of us
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) sent its condolences to the club, which is 20 years old and based in a township on a hill above Port Elizabeth. Mr Mazomba said the dead men would be named only after the search has been called off. He said most of the team's players were unemployed men in their 20s and some students in their late teens.

After an impressive 4-2 home win last Thursday night against Rayo Vallecano in which Malaga had played some outstanding football, they travelled to Barcelona in hope of gaining another valuable three points. It was Espanyol who started the brightest with Malaga looking lethargic. Rondon nearly put the ball into his own net and Uche for Espanyol shot just over. It was no surprise then to see Espanyol go ahead, a free kick from just outside the box was cleverly fired home by Coutinho under the jumping wall on 23 minutes. Malaga's keeper Caballero damaged his hand in an attempt to save the shot and had to be replaced by ex-Espanyol player Kameni. The lull in play seemed to inspire Malaga, they do have great spirit at the moment. Maresca hit the post with a header and Isco
British cyclist Lizzie Armitstead won the GentWevelgem road race with a strong solo ride on the first occasion the event has been staged for women. Sunday's win formed Armitstead's second victory of the year after she claimed glory in the Omloop van het Hageland – Tielt-Winge in Belgium on 4th March. drove a shot against the opposite upright. Rondon then went close and at half time Malaga could count themselves unlucky to be one down. The second half began with much of the same with Malaga dominating and, with 15 minutes to go, Pellegrini played his trump card – Van Nistelrooy came on and with his first touch the Dutch master equalised. The ball broke in the box after some good work by Isco for Ruud to slot it home on 76 mins. The game was turned on its head just two minutes later, a great Rondon header was well saved but the goalkeeper could only parry to Demichelis who smashed it into the roof of the net. Isco then went close but in the end a fully deserved three points which leaves Malaga joint third with Valencia. Report by: Scott Forbes
The British cyclist, 23, is a big hope for Olympic gold at this summer's road race in London. However, Armitstead faces a battle with reigning Olympic champion Nicole Cooke for the position of leader in the GB team. The pair had a public spat at the 2011 Road World Championships in Copenhagen, when leader Armitstead was held up by a crash and Cooke went on to try to win alone.

Federer’s winning streak comes to an end Roger Federer's 16-match winning streak in 2012 came to an end when he was beaten 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 by Andy Roddick in the third round of the Miami Masters. "I came out flat today," the Swiss said. "I was a bit tired, I guess." World number one Novak Djokovic secured his place in round four with a 6-3, 6-4 win over fellow Serbian Victor Troicki. Roddick survived three break points in the opening game of the decider and then broke Federer immediately. It was only the American's third victory in 24 meetings against Federer and ended a losing sequence against top-three players stretching back to 2010.

Chelsea may have a fight on their hands Chelsea face competition from Italian giants Inter Milan for manager Laurent Blanc. Blanc has reportedly been offered around £200,000 a week to take over at Stamford Bridge. But the France boss, whose contract expires at the end of Euro 2012, may also receive a firm proposal from Inter. Inter's decision to axe Ranieri has complicated the situation, as Ranieri was widely expected to remain in post until the end of the season.

56 days in jail for Twitter abuse of Fabrice Muamba
The student who mocked Fabrice Muamba on Twitter after he collapsed during a match has been jailed for inciting racial hatred. Liam Stacey, 21, provoked revulsion with comments made while the Bolton star still lay on the pitch. Police were inundated with complaints as members of the public reported the student's comments. Stacey, a Swansea University biology undergraduate, was quickly tracked down and arrested. Last week he admitted inciting racial hatred when he appeared briefly at Swansea Magistrates' Court and yesterday (Tuesday) he was jailed for 56 days at the same court.
