UK and Argentina 30 years on Services were held in Britain and Argentina on Monday to mark the 30th anniversary of the start of the Falklands War, during which a total of 255 British and about 650 Argentine troops died after the UK sent a task force to combat the Argentine invasion on April 2nd, 1982. Amid renewed tension, with Argentina reasserting its claim to the archipelago, Prime Minister David Cameron said that he remains committed to upholding British sovereignty over the islands. Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner visited the southern port of Ushuaia on Monday where she led rallies to commemorate the Argentine dead and lit an eternal flame devoted to their memory. Before she arrived, Argentine veterans held a vigil for the fallen. Argentina has asked for negotiations about

sovereignty but the British government says it will not discuss the issue without the agreement of the islanders. The UK has accused Argentina of trying to impose an economic blockade on the islanders, after it banned Falklandsflagged ships from docking in its ports, as well as those of other countries which are members of the Mercosur trading block. Meanwhile, Argentina has complained about what it calls British "militarisation" in the south Atlantic, after it was

announced one of the Royal Navy's newest warships was to be deployed to the region. Despite the war of words, it is highly unlikely that Argentina will attempt another invasion. In the past 30 years, military spending has been cut back savagely and its air force is still only equipped with the planes it had in 1982. Basically, there is only enough money in the defence budget nowadays to pay the wages of the soldiers, sailors, airmen and civilians the armed forces ministry employs,

What planet is Vodafone on? last week we paid our factura that was a number of euros plus 4 centimos. The bill as appearing on their own factura was paid in full. On Thursday night all our phones were cut oﬀ. The reason? Because according to their accounts department, our bill was for the same number of euros and 5 centimos. Vodafone therefore cut all our phone lines – and we have ten lines – for the sake of 1 centimo that according to their own factura we didn’t even owe! We have been with them for three years and have never ever been late in paying. True, we could still get incoming calls but we couldn’t make any outgoing calls at all. At ten past two in the afternoon and after hours of calls to them we paid the 1 centimo by my personal credit card and, at this point, they told us it would take 4 hours to reconnect us. So, what have we done about this other than to complain to one of Vodafone’s “customer Service” people who told us we could always go to another company in a bored voice? We have been to see Orange, Moviestar and all the other companies that we can think of to get the best prices and that Vodafone can put their system.... well, let’s just say they can expect our contract with them to be cancelled shortly and they will lose yet another customer due to their incompetence and rudeness. The power is with the customer to change, and change we will!

More budget details revealed Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro revealed more details of the government's draft budget for 2012 in Parliament on Tuesday. Only pensions and sports funding will not be cut but will rise by 3.1 per cent and 13.6 per cent respectively, while not even King Juan Carlos was spared. His Civil List will be cut by 2 per cent this year in line with the cuts he has requested for the past three years. Other cuts include 20 per cent for education and job development, a 35 per cent cut for the national film industry and 22 per cent less for Research and Development. Government department budgets will be cut by 16.9 per cent on average. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's salary will be frozen, in line with all public workers. The government announced last week that it planned to cut €27 billion from its budget this year as part of

Spanish link in cracking the Enigma code A pair of rare Enigma machines used in the Spanish Civil War have been given to the head of GCHQ, Britain's communications intelligence agency. The machines fill in a missing chapter in the history of British code-breaking, but the story of how they helped pave the way for Britain's historic wartime achievement is largely unknown. A non-commissioned officer found the machines a few years ago in a secret room at the Spanish Ministry of Defence in Madrid. Spain’s intelligence chief Felix Sanz said nobody entered the room because it was very secret “but one day somebody decided to find out what was so secret”. The room turned out to be a small office where all the encryption was produced during not only the Civil War but in the

He needed a real message to break the code but German military signals were inaudible in Britain. However, the signals that were produced by the machines that had been sent to Spain in 1936 were audible enough to be intercepted.

The experience in Spain was a vital stepping stone. Iberia asked the National Court on Monday to declare strikes planned by the pilots’ union, Sepla, and the cabin crews’ union, Stavla, illegal in order to be able to demand compensation for heavy economic losses. Syria 'agrees' to peace plan deadline Syria has agreed to an April 10th deadline to begin implementing a six-point peace plan, UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan told the UN Security Council in closed session on Monday. The plan calls for a UNsupervised ceasefire by all parties, withdrawal of soldiers and heavy weapons from cities, and delivery of humanitarian aid. “Coronation Street” Falklands killer jailed to stay British

A 15-year-old schoolboy killed his mother with a hammer, beating her over the head seven times, after watching an episode of Coronation Street in which villain Stape killed a woman in the same manner. Daniel Bartlam killed his mother Jacqueline on April 25th last year but told the court that it was not murder because he had lost self control. Following the killing, the teenager had then wrapped his mother’s body in newspaper and set her alight after planting another hammer at the scene of the crime. Mrs Bartlam’s body could only be identified by dental records as it was so badly burned. On checking his computer, police found a number of scenes from TV soap operas to do with killing including those involving hammer murders and fires plus they found he had accessed a website called “How To Get Away With Murder.” He had blamed the murder on an “intruder” but it was found that the hammer he had planter was of the wrong kind and could not have been used

in the attack. A jury at Nottingham Crown Court found him guilty of murder earlier this year. Local authorities had referred Bartlam to a counsellor after he complained of hearing voices but a psychiatrist found he was not mentally ill. In passing sentence, Mr Justice Julian Flaux told Bartlam: "It seems you wanted to get away with the perfect murder. This was a grotesque and senseless killing. There was a significant degree of planning and premeditation." Mrs Bartlam’s parents said: "To find out that Daniel planned to kill his own mother and then hear all the details, it is all so hard to believe. The most difficult part for us and something that only Daniel can answer is 'why?'" Following the sentencing, DCI Kate Meynall, who led the investigation, called it a "shocking" and "chilling" case. She added: "Maybe one day Daniel will tell the truth, as there are several gaps that only he can fill."

The Defence Secretary has vowed the UK can and will continue to defend the Falkland Islands on the 30th anniversary of the conflict. Philip Hammond said there was no evidence the area was at risk from a military intervention from Argentina. But he emphasised the UK still had the "assets, the people, the equipment" to "robustly" defend the islands. Speaking 30 years after Argentina invaded, Mr Hammond said: "Despite the rhetoric of the media, there is no evidence at all of any military intention by Argentina nor any military capability by Argentina to attempt to retake the Falkland Islands. I have said very clearly, we are not going to lose the Falklands." Mr Hammond was responding to remarks by Admiral Sir John Woodward who told The Times that the UK would not be able to repeat the mission he helped lead as it currently has no aircraft carrier.

Brand new hero Chief banker to go firefighters saved a woman from inside who was treated for serious burns. All six people were treated for their injuries at Colchester Hospital. Assistant Divisional Officer Martyn Hare, of Essex Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Firefighters rescued a woman from the rear of the property when they first arrived at this incident and the Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR) have located and rescued a man from the rubble." Pressure grows International criminals caught over illegal hotel In the space of a week, the National Police detained seven people in Malaga province who are wanted in other EU countries. A spokesman revealed that the round-up started on March 22nd, when the anti-organised crime unit (UDYCO) detained a 75year-old Gibraltar-born man in Marbella who is wanted in Portugal for drug

trafficking. The same day, the Provincial Citizens Safety Brigade arrested a Bulgarian in Malaga city, who is wanted for robbery in Bulgaria. Over the next six days, criminals wanted on a variety of charges in Holland, Belgium, Finland, Lithuania and Iran were arrested in other Costa del Sol towns.

Since the beginning of this year, the UDYCO Costa del Sol unit has arrested 27 criminals wanted in other countries.

Too many councils A report by the European Council considers that 80 per cent of the municipal councils in Malaga province are superfluous. It said towns with less than 10,400 inhabitants are not economically viable and that the economic crisis cancels out the importance of a town’s history, social customs and shared way of life. The Junta de Andalucia’s acting environment chief, José Juan Díaz Trillo, has asked for a meeting with Agriculture and Envronment Minister Miguel Arias Cañete to discuss the demolition of the El Algarrobico hotel, built illegally on the beach at Carboneras in the Cabo de Gata-Najar natural park in Almeria. Under pressure from Greenpeace and other ecological associations, a judge ordered work to stop on the hotel in 2006. Since then the hotel has been the subject of another 15 judicial orders, some ordering it to be demolished, others in favour of allowing it to be opened. However, the Supreme Court recently ruled that the part of the

hotel actually built on the beach would have to be demolished, making it impossible to save the rest of the building. The central government in Madrid has been against the hotel since construction started in 2003, with a building the licence from Carboneras town council,

tacitly backed by the Almeria provincial regional government and with the Junta sitting on the fence. The local people are in favour of the hotel because it would provide much needed jobs but it now looks as if the ecologists will get their way and the hotel will be demolished.

University to expel hackers Two more brotherhoods are expected to join the group this week. The hacking came to light last week when the national Police arrested three students on charges of causing damage, computer invasion, revealing secrets, falsifying documents and fraud. Doggy park open for Easter The long-awaited dogs-only green area – appropriately named “guau-guau” – was finally opened to dogs and their owners last friday. With an area of 54,000m2, it is the biggest of its kind in Andalucia, with walkways, training and muscle-strengthening areas as well as areas where the dogs can run free. it also has two “toilet” areas, called pipi-can in Spanish. The park, between the autovia and C/Alcalá galiano de los Pacos, is surrounded by a 3-metre high fence for the animals’ safety.

Fine mess in Asturias

he day after the election in Andalucia, some of the talking heads on the TV political chat shows put forward the theory that the unions had called the general strike for March 29th with the specific aim of sabotaging what appeared was going to be a landslide victory for the Partido Popular. That idea hadn’t occurred to me – even though some readers believe I see Socialist-Communist conspiracies under every stick and stone – but after thinking about it I realised it wasn’t quite so outrageous as it first appeared.

(Communist-dominated) Workers Commissions (CC.OO). The unions spend the money on training courses, buying equipment for their offices, paying their staff and even paying their private telephone bills, among other things.

ot being involved in union work these days and living in a small town like Coin, where most things simply flow over people’s heads, I didn’t realise that the unions could create so much panic about the government’s labour reforms, literally stirring it up on a daily basis.

e’ll never know if the PP’s Javier Arenas would have achieved the 55 seats he needed for a majority on March 25th but we do know that the general strike was pretty much of a nongeneral one. The unions claimed it was a complete success and brought the country to a standstill – which was true up to a point because most of the transport workers came out. But small shops and businesses were open as usual in all the smaller towns and most of the big cities – TV news showed one man in Madrid hiding behind his shop’s reja, saying to the camera “I’ll open as soon as the pickets move on.” The radical anti-system troublemakers rioted in Barcelona but there were no violent incidents elsewhere. The government now plans to tighten the law so that these people will end in jail for a couple of years instead of walking free after an overnight stay.

e shouldn’t forget that Andalucia was a hot bed of radical ideas in the decades before the Civil War and became a Socialist stronghold the minute France breathed his last. So it wasn’t difficult for the unions to play on people’s fears by likening the PP to the old landowners who were the main cause of Andalucia’s poverty and backwardness through the ages.

hen again, even the newspapers that usually put the PP under a microscope so as not to miss the slightest fault, imperfection or sin wondered why the unions had called a general strike before Rajoy’s first 100 days were up – something that had never happened since the country’s return to democracy.

he theory also makes sense when you take into account that the strike had to be held last week, because this week is Easter and despite the lousy weather so far most people only have holidays and religious processions on their minds. The impact would have been much weaker if the strike took place next week.

pen government seems to be one political mess in Andalucia and the uncertainty as to who will govern for the next four years is also being reflected in the northern region of Asturias where the incumbent premier Francisco Álvarez-Cascos and his Asturias Citizens Forum (FAC) are doing all they can to keep the Socialists from retaking the government. Álvarez-Cascos, a former powerful secretary general of the Popular Party who abandoned his political roots to organise his regional coalition, has been meeting with the local PP leader Mercedes Fernández to try to form a partnership to prevent a possible joining of forces by the Socialists with the United Left (Izquierda Unida, IU).

ollowing the March 25th elections, the Socialists won 16 seats in the 45member assembly but fell short of the necessary 23 for an absolute majority. But after a vote count of absentee ballots from Asturian voters who live abroad, the Socialists were given one more seat – taken from Álvarez Cascos’ coalition which is down to 12 spots in the regional assembly. The PP garnered 10 while the United Left (IU-IX) coalition won five. So if you do the maths, the left and the conservatives are tied, with no one getting a majority to form a government should the partnerships develop.

nter the centrist UPyD party and its candidate Ignacio Prendes who it appears will be the vote-breaker. It is an important début for the UPyD party, which has been making solid headway in different regional legislatures, including Parliament, where it now has five seats following last November’s general elections. Prendes hasn’t said who he will vote for, nor has he said who he favours to govern the region.

ow the veteran former PP politician – a power broker during his time – is holding up an olive branch to his former party hoping to keep Javier Fernández’s Socialists from gaining power in Asturias. It was just over a year ago that Álvarez-Cascos shocked PP leader Mariano Rajoy by announcing that he was abandoning the party because he felt “unprotected” by the national committee from the attacks he was getting at the local level from Asturias party boss Gabino de Lorenzo, the mayor of Oviedo. De Lorenzo’s supporters had launched a dirty campaign against Álvarez-Cascos, who was vying for the PP candidacy in the region.

n a letter made public at the time, Álvarez-Cascos told Rajoy that his complaints for disciplinary action against De Gabino and his supporters were being ignored. He believed that he had enough support to organise his own conservative coalition that addressed the needs of the Asturias’ residents. Even early polls showed that ÁlvarezCascos would rob votes from the PP if he were to form his own grouping; he accomplished it, but the 10 months that followed with political bickering and his inability to form a government were a disaster.

They feel that the party can only bring more deficit and runaway spending, hurting Asturias’ chances for settling its accounts. The political mess in both Andalucia and Asturias goes to show that while many believed that the entire nation was behind the PP taking office last November there are still pockets of divisions all over this country, which may not help Mariano Rajoy flush his labour reform austerity agenda down our throats so easily.

Community News Easter Parades in Malaga Anyone for a tea dance? If you are planning to go and watch it would be wiser not to try and drive into the city – park outside and take public transport into the centre. The local trains (Cercanias) run a regular service from stations like Plaza Mayor where you can leave your car. Below are a few details of what you might see (rain permitting) from the Malaga tourist board (malagaturismo.com).

Wednesday The halfway stage of Easter Week with six brotherhoods parading their thirteen ‘tronos’. The afternoon begins at 16:30 in Plaza de Capuchinos with the departure of Los Salesianos. Then head for La Parroquia de Santo Domingo to see the Way of the Cross of La Congregacion de Mena on the streets of El Perchel district at around 18:00. At 19:00 cross El Puente de los Alemanes (bridge) and make for Plaza de Felix Saenz to admire the dense cortège of La Cofradias Fusionadas. Before taking a rest, we recommend that you attend the traditional ceremony in which a prisoner is freed by the image of Jesus El Rico at 20:30 near Plaza de la Aduana, very close to the Alcazaba. Head for the Alameda Principal at 22:00 to see the magnificent floats paraded by La Cofradia de la Paloma, in which doves are set free. Then go to the end of Calle Carreteria to witness the vibrant meeting of the ‘tronos’ carried by La Cofradia de la Sangre at La Tribuna de los Pobres. Finally, try to find a seat in the Alameda Principal in order to enjoy the procession of La Expiracion at around midnight.

Thursday The most popular day in terms of attendance, which makes it difficult to get around and find spots that are not too crowded. Seven brotherhoods and thirteen will go on ‘tronos’ procession. Be at the port for 10:00 to witness the legionary troops as they arrive in Malaga; these soldiers lift El Cristo de la Buena Muerte onto its processional 'trono' (12:00) and subsequently carry it to

the brotherhood's procession. Head for Calle Carreteria at 18:00 to see the departure of La Cofradia de Viñeros and witness the ceremonial placing of the key in the hand of the Nazarene. Afterwards, at 18:30, make for the Alameda Principal to see the walking cathedrals that are the ‘tronos’ of La Sagrada Cena and La Virgen de la Paz. Nearby, at Puente de Tetuan (20:00) you can admire the procession of La Congregacion de Mena accompanied by the Legion and the Navy. Then, if you can manage to exit the Alameda Principal via its north side, go to Calle San Agustin to follow the sober cortège of La Santa Cruz until it reaches Plaza de la Merced at around 21:00. At around 23:30 go and witness the visual feast provided by La Misericordia in front of the cathedral in Plaza del Obispo. Then, head for the Alameda Principal to see a unique sight in Malaga's Easter week; the crossing of the processions of La Esperanza and Mena at around 00:30.

Good Friday Silence is the main feature on this day of mourning and reflection. Fourteen ‘tronos’ are paraded through the streets of Malaga as eight different brotherhoods carry their sacred images. The large number of fraternities taking part today means that an early start is advisable to avoid missing any of them. Watch the procession of El Descendimiento throughout the park at around 17:30. An hour later, head for Plaza de Arriola where the canticles sung by of Las Hermanas de la Cruz to La Cofradia de Los

Dolores de San Juan will take you back several centuries into the past. By 19:00, you should be at the cathedral to admire the solemnity of the Way of the Cross of El Santisimo Cristo Mutilado. Then go to El Puente de la Aurora to watch El Santo Traslado and La Virgen de la Soledad. The procession of La Virgen de la Piedad along narrow Calle Ollerias, the anteroom to La Cruz del Molinillo district, is at around 21:30. And if you want to see an Easter procession combined with a rich architectural setting, witness the departure from the cathedral of La Hermandad del Monte Calvario and its progress along Calle de San Agustin at around 23:00. Nearby Calle Caldereria you can watch El Cristo del Amor and La Virgen de la Caridad as they return to La Victoria district shortly after midnight.

Easter Sunday The procession of El Resucitado is Malaga's celebration of the resurrection of the Lord. Nazarenes from each and every one of the brotherhoods take part together, creating a colourful cortège that, due to its extreme length, is best viewed sitting in one of the seats provided by the Association of Easter Fraternities throughout the official route. This procession reaches the Alameda Principal at 12:00 midday and finishes at La Iglesia de San Julian (parish church), near Calle Carreteria, at 14:00. After the solemnity, the passion and the celebration most of Malaga will then adjourn to the beach – if hopefully the weather proves kinder this year.

La Trocha Shopping Centre in Coín is hosting a midweek, afternoon Tea Dance on Wednesday 11th April. The event has been arranged by the management team and local British volunteers as a prelude to a bigger British Festival being arranged for later in the year. Entrance to the La Trocha Tea Dance is free and everyone is invited to take part with popular waltzes, fox trots and quick steps on offer to get the crowd dancing. Music will be provided by Sue Brown from Monda, who will be playing well known tunes on her electronic keyboard and there will be a chance for the audience to join in with singing some popular British songs. Toot Toot! Competition On Tuesday 20th March, the Half Orange Group (Widows, Widowers & Singles) of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar visited the Automobile Museum in Malaga, which is housed in the spectacular former tobacco factory of 1923. The exhibition contains over 90 cars, the collection of which was first started in the 1930s by a Portugese gentleman and is now solely owned by his son Señor Joao Magalhaes. Models include Hispano Suiza, Bugatte, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Mercedes and more. Also included are rare motor accessories, trims, hats and fashions, all displayed in a setting of contemporary art and motor sport parts. On arrival, their day became very special as they were surrounded by the brand new models of the Mercedes Coupe SL which was being launched to the press – time to admire and pose for photos. Due to this event the visit had to be delayed to the afternoon, so they strolled to the promenade along the sea front and had an excellent sea food lunch.

On their return they were welcomed by the guide, a very agreeable gentleman, who they jokingly asked when they would be receiving their free samples. Meaning, of course, one of the new Mercedes, as there were just sufficient number outside to go round!! They discovered later after a very impressive, interesting and informative visit, that they had in fact been talking to the owner of all the items in the museum. The day had been one of the most successful that the group had taken part in and they all agreed that the museum is an excellent place to take their visitors in the summer.

His orders are to recover tissue and organ samples and to report back once he has them, as the company is convinced the reports are reliable. He befriends the children of the woman he is lodging with, and helps reduce her dependency on medication – caused by

her partner having been lost some eight months earlier in the same region that the hunter is searching. During his search he becomes embroiled in the conflict between loggers and 'greenies', people protesting against the logging. He finds the murdered remains of the missing father, and discovers the location of one of the tiger's dens. He

stakes it out, but is accosted by another company operative who attempts to shoot him. After shooting the operative, he continues to watch the tiger’s den. Then, upon running into the last Thylacine, the hunter reluctantly shoots the animal, and proceeds to cremate its body, so that the animal and the wilderness, will not be exploited.

To prepare for the role, Dafoe worked with a bush survival expert who taught him practical tips like how to de-scent himself so animals couldn't smell him in the bush. The real star of this quietly gripping film is Tasmania itself, an extraordinary wilderness landscape gloriously photographed for the wide screen by Robert Humphreys

That said, it is a feel good movie, that will make you laugh and make you cry. It´s rare for me to like a fim, but this one is up there, it´s not greatest, but come on, who doesn´t like Meryl Streep?

225g butter, softened 225g self raising flour 2tsp ground mixed spice 400g mixed dried fruit 150g light muscovado sugar 50g golden syrup Finely grated zest of 2 lemons 4 medium eggs, lightly beaten

TO DECORATE

• 500g marzipan • 2tbsp apricot jam • Icing sugar to dust

Directions Preheat oven to 170c (150c fan oven) gas mark 3. Grease a 20.5 (8inch) round cake tin and line with baking parchment. In large bowl stir together flour, mixed spice and dried fruit. In a separate bowl put the butter, muscovado sugar, syrup and lemon zest and beat together with electric mixer until pale and fluﬀy. Gradually beat in eggs, add flour mixture and fold everything together with a large metal spoon. Empty mixture into prepared tin and bake for 1hr 25mins (after 1 hour cover with foil). A skewer inserted into the centre should come out clean. Leave to cool completely in the tin. Take cake out of tin, peel oﬀ parchment and

transfer to a serving plate. To decorate roll out two thirds of the marzipan on work surface dusted with icing sugar until large enough to cut out a 20.5cm circle (use the base of the tin). Heat jam with 1 tsp water in a small pan until runny. Brush the top of the cake with some jam then lay the marzipan circle on top and gently press down, crimp the edges. With the remaining marzipan make 11 equal sized balls, brush the underside with a little melted jam and stick on the cake. To finish oﬀ either lightly brown the marzipan under a hot grill or use a blowtorch.

Gene link to post-traumatic stress disorder risk

Nature deficit disorder 'damaging children'

After looking at the DNA from 200 members of 12 families who survived the December 1988 Armenian earthquake, US researchers said susceptibility to posttraumatic stress disorder could be partially determined by gene variants.

Traffic, video games and parental anxieties are keeping children indoors to the extent that they are losing contact with nature at a "dramatic" rate, and their health and education are suffering, according to a National Trust report.

The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.1, killed at least 25,000 people. All those who took part in the study had lived through it, 90% saw dead bodies and 92% saw people who had been seriously injured. The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) researchers found that the survivors who carried two gene variants which affect the production of serotonin – which affects mood and behaviour – were more likely to display symptoms of PTSD. PTSD can arise after any kind of experience that causes trauma – being in a war, after a natural disaster or because of child abuse

or sexual assault. Symptoms can include flashbacks, feeling emotionally numb or hyper-alert to danger, and avoiding situations that act as reminders of the original trauma. It is estimated that up to 3% of the general population is likely to be affected by PTSD at some point. A spokesman for the team said: "We suspect that the gene variants produce less serotonin, which predisposes these family members to PTSD after exposure to violence or disaster. "Our next step will be to try and replicate the findings in a larger, more heterogeneous population." He added that, if larger studies did confirm the finding, they could eventually lead to new ways to screen people at risk of PTSD, and target specific medicines for preventing and treating the disorder.

Author Richard Louv coined the phrase “nature deficit disorder” in 2005, arguing that the human cost of "alienation from nature" was measured in "diminished use of the senses, attention difficulties and higher rates of physical and emotional illnesses". Statistics show that the area where children are allowed to range unsupervised around their homes has shrunk by 90% since the 1970s. Since then, rates of obesity, self-harm and mental health disorders diagnosed in children have climbed significantly in the UK and many other countries. But nature deficit disorder is not generally regarded as a

medical condition. The report said there is evidence that the problem is worse in the UK than other parts of Europe, and may help explain poor UK rankings in childhood satisfaction surveys. The trust argues that the growing dissociation of children from the natural world and internment in the "cotton wool culture" of indoor parental guidance impairs their capacity to learn through experience. The report recommends that teachers take children for lessons outdoors when possible, with urban schools using parks. It also says that authorities who cite "health and safety" as a reason for stopping children playing conkers or climbing trees should be aware that successive Health and Safety Executive heads have advocated a measure of risk-taking in children's lives.

Junk food link to depression Eating too much junk food such as hamburgers, hotdogs and pizzas can affect your mental as well as your physical health, according to researchers at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. By the end of their sixmonth study of 8,964 people who had never been diagnosed with depression or taken antidepressant medication and who agreed to go on a diet of junk food, just over half were diagnosed with depression or had started taking anti-depressants.

The researchers said: "Even eating small quantities is linked to a significantly higher chance of developing depression." The researchers found that people who ate the most junk food were more likely to be single, less active, eat less fruit, nuts, fish, vegetables and olive oil and work more than 45 hours a week. SIR PETER BLAKE REDESIGNS ICONIC ALBUM COVER

Sargeant Pepper gets a new look … but do you like it or do you think the original shouldn’t have been messed with? The famous 1967 piece featured the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Bob Dylan, Marlon Brando and James Dean. But now Blake has brought it up-to-date and added modern cultural icons such as JK Rowling, Paul Weller, Elton John, Helen Mirren and Damien Hirst. As part of his 80th birthday celebrations, the artist, often referred to as the godfather of the British pop art scene, chose people who have inspired his creative career over the past six decades. Blake said: "I've chosen people I admire, great people and some who are dear friends. I had a very longlist of people who I wanted to go in but couldn't fit everyone in – I think that shows how strong British culture and its legacy of the last six decades is."

Sir Paul McCartney keeps his place in the artwork surrounded by the likes of TV cook Delia Smith, Vivienne Westwood and the Beatle's two daughters, photographer Mary and designer Stella. The artwork will go on display at the Vintage Festival at Boughton House in Northamptonshire in July. The event has been organised by Blake's friend, Sir Wayne Hemingway. The designer told Sky News: "He's taken the genius of his 1967 album cover and he's brought it up to date.He looked at the old icons and he's kept some of them in, like Alfred Hitchcock, but he's put in all the modern ones." Adding that it was tough for Blake to decide who to include.

Although a big sports fan, Blake decided not to include them in the artwork. Sir Wayne told Sky News: "Sir Peter Blake started to have a load of sports stars but then he changed it and decided to stick to the creative industries. When he started to look back, and we were sat with him, and he was saying all these names, you start to think about creativity. We are really cool.You think, 'Could you do this about America, could you do this about Australia?' and you couldn't quite do it with the same gravitas that you can do it with British culture." Those who have been included have spoken of their honour at being part of the project.

upiter and Venus are still prominent in the western sky after sunset although Jupiter is beginning to get very close to the horizon now. Venus reaches its most distant point away to the left of the Sun this week, and from now on it will begin to get closer toward the horizon until it passes in front of the Sun on June 6th. If you have binoculars then have a look at Venus tonight (Wednesday 4th) as it skims just below the Pleiades star cluster. Every eight years Venus appears very close to the Pleiades cluster with 2020 and 2028 being exceptional meetings when Venus will be right in the centre of the group.

These are Castor and Pollux the two twins in the constellation Gemini. Through a telescope you will discover that Castor is not a single star but in fact is made up of a group of six stars all very close together. While Castor and Pollux may look close to each other they are really at vastly different distances from us, Pollux on the left of the two is 33 light years away while Castor to the right is almost twice as far away at 60 light years.

ut if you follow the line of the pointers this time to the right you will come to Regulus the brightest star in Leo the Lion. Regulus is a red coloured star that forms the base of the famous ‘sickle’ shape of Leo’s head. Now I don’t think that many of the constellations look very much like what they are supposed to represent but Leo is one of the exceptions. With a little imagination it does resemble a Lion similar to the lions in Trafalgar square in London. Unfortunately the planet Mars is slightly spoiling the overall image as it is very close to Regulus and as both Mars and Regulus are similar in brightness and colour it is easy to mistake them – Mars is the lower of the two.

o back to the Plough and follow the natural sweeping curve of the handle onto the bright red star Arcturus. There’s a little rhyme that goes ‘Arc to Arcturus and straight on to Spica’. Arcturus is a huge star at the base of Boötes the herdsman, it is about 50 times bigger than our Sun and about 40 light years away. Spica is the bright star in Virgo. Now while Leo looks a bit like a lion there is no way that Virgo resembles anything like a celestial virgin. At the moment Saturn is very close to Spica rising at about 10.00pm, I’ll be writing about Saturn next week as it comes closest to the Earth on 15th April.

MotoGP star Dani Pedrosa arrested Spanish MotoGP rider Dani Pedrosa was arrested over the weekend as part of a raid in Valencia by the Civil Guard involving a ring allegedly dedicated to helping people to cheat at exams to obtain a yacht captain’s license. The case is being dealt with by a Valencia court and is currently sub judice.The ring was apparently based at a naval school in Valencia, and is alleged to have passed on correct answers to exam questions through a sophisticated system that included tiny cameras and earpieces.

Contador's Saxo Bank team to keep hold of Tour status Alberto Contador's Saxo Bank-SunGard team have kept their World Tour status despite having the Spaniard's points removed from their record. Contador, 29, a three-time winner of the Tour de France, won 68% of Saxo's 2011 points total and is serving a two-year ban for a positive drugs test. The International Cycling Union (UCI) asked for Saxo's licence to be revoked. But the UCI's licence commission has ruled that Saxo can keep their tour status for 2012.
