WORLD NEWS - TURKEY’S BORDERS “VIOLATED”

Clashes mar Syria hopes for ceasefire Violence continued in Syria on Tuesday despite a UN-backed deadline for a complete withdrawal of troops and weapons coming into effect that day. Activists reported shelling in Homs and areas of northern Aleppo province, and unrest in the capital, Damascus. Speaking after talks with his Russian counterpart in Moscow on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said his government had taken steps to adhere to the plan by withdrawing some army units from some areas, releasing a number of detainees and reaching an agreement on getting humanitarian aid to those in need. But he added that "despite all these positive measures we noticed on a daily basis the escalation of opposition by the armed terrorist gangs". Mr

Muallem said a ceasefire could only come into force once a team of international observers had arrived. He also accused Turkey of supplying militant groups with weapons and allowing them to cross its borders. He said Syria could not fulfil its side of the plan "if there are still illegal arms deliveries and moving of militants from Turkey". On Monday, several people in a refugee camp in Turkey were injured by shots fired across the border from inside Syria and two people were also shot dead as they approached the border. Speaking on a trip to China, Turkish Prime Minister

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the incidents were a "clear violation" of its borders and that his country would "take the necessary measures" in response. Turkey now hosts some 24,000 Syrians, including hundreds of army defectors. Under the peace plan – negotiated by the UN and Arab League's special envoy Kofi Annan – by midnight on Tuesday Syrian troops should have withdrawn from population centres and stopped the use of heavy weaponry, with a full ceasefire coming into place on Thursday. Damascus had agreed to

The death toll continues to rise

but the deadline, demanded written guarantees on Sunday that the rebels would give up arms and foreign states would promise not to fund them. The Free Syrian Army, the main armed rebel group, refused to meet the new demands. The UN says more than 9,000 people have been killed in the uprising against Mr Assad's rule which began more than a year ago. In February, the Syrian government put the death toll at 3,838 – 2,493 civilians and 1,345 security forces personnel.

Vodafone

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

Further to my article last week about the trials and tribulations with Vodafone, I am happy to report that we have negotiated an extra 10% discount off our bills for the next three months. They offered us the grand total of €3 compensation to start with which, as you can guess, we were singularly unimpressed with so a pleasant lady called us back and the deal was done. Hopefully they will check their accounts procedures next time before cutting us off. no matter..... this time it’s Telefonica, AKA Moviestar, that are being a pain. For the last three weeks our area has had internet one minute and not the next and every time it goes off, we have to wait anything from 5 to 15 minutes for it to come back on. The real problem is that, in the meantime all the Telefonica lines go down and we have to keep rechecking every time the system comes back up what has and hasn’t been saved. We called them (while the system was working) and they said we “had technical difficulties” and hung up on us! Well, we know that, don’t we? What is it with telephone companies that they think they can treat the people who, ultimately pay their wages in such a cavalier manner? It’s a flippin’ disgrace! Still, moan over. The weather has improved greatly over the last week or so and I will be out in my garden getting some more plants in this weekend to replace the ones that were killed by the recent frosts.

Spain to join Nato vigilance system Defence minister Pedro Morenes said during a radio interview on Tuesday that Spain will form part of the new Alliance Ground Surveillance system (AGS) that Nato plans to set in motion in 2015. National News Emigrants help keep country afloat The amount of money sent home by Spaniards working abroad reached a record high last year of €5,701 billion – an almost six-percent rise over the previous year. The Bank of Spain said that apart from a small decline in 2009, the figure has not stopped growing, despite the global economic downturn. The number of Spaniards living abroad now stands at 1.8 million,

up from 1.4 million in 2009, according to the most recent figure available from the National Statistics Institute. Spain's immigrant population, who worked mainly in the construction boom, have been sending less money home. Total remittances last year fell over €1 billion short of the high of €8.448 billion reached in 2007.

Court wants to collect debts The Supreme Court has asked Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón to help it collect some €4 billion the government has been awarded in different litigations, but has not been able to collect. Court sources said some of the 2,265 lawsuits it has filed in different courts involve tax disputes with citizens at the local and regional level. One such case is an appeal by BBVA against the government on a tax sanction decision involving some €104 million.

Cuts in education and health announced Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced cuts to both education and the public health system to save €10 billion this year, after a meeting with economic advisers and the heads of the two affected ministries on Monday. The announcement, made in a press release, mentioned privatisation, changes in education and healthcare and a “better rationalisation and the elimination of duplication and greater efficiency in the running of large public services, which will be put into place this month.” The cutback is equivalent to some 10 percent of the government's total spending on healthcare. The government has also announced its intention to

Mayor teaches residents First ETA prisoner manners moved

The 115 registered residents of the village of La Toba in Guadalajara province fully support a new regulation which bans spitting and farting in public, and tells them to cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing. Such behaviour cannot be officially sanctioned by fines but Mayor Julian Atienza Garcia finds it

civically and unacceptable.

morally

The new regulation also tells people to say “Buenos dias” when entering any place where there are other people and to identify themselves at the start of any phone calls they make “so that people know who’re they talking to”. Not content with trying

to improve people’s manners, the mayor tries to set a good example by helping volunteers to clean streets and green areas. In one recent operation, he and around 100 volunteers

removed 1,500 kilos of bottles, tins and plastic bags which had been dumped along the banks of the Alcorlo river which runs through the town.

More money for mass graves Although the government has slashed subsidies to the associations involved in opening the mass graves dating back to the Civil War, it has actually allocated more money to the activity itself. Under the Socialist government last year, the associations received €6.2 million, of which only €1.9 went to the exhumations. The subsidy this year has

dropped to €2.5 million, but nearly all of it has been earmarked for opening the graves.

The Interior Ministry has transferred Aitzol Gogorza from a Seville prison to one in Basauri, Viscay province. The move is on compassionate grounds – in a first gesture toward jailed members of the Basque terrorist group ETA who are suffering from terminal or serious illnesses. Since the group announced a “definitive” ceasefire in October of last year, it has been asking the government to make penitentiary concessions as a first step towards the definitive disbandment of the organisation, a call backed by the Basque radical abertzale left, the Socialists in the region and the Basque Nationalist Party. The Interior Ministry has said it will study each case individually. In this case,

Gorgoza suffers from severe mental health problems and has been on suicide watch since last November. Cocaine gang busted

Spanish newspapers gave a lot of space over the weekend to a New York Times article titled “In Spain, women enslaved by a boom in brothel tourism” which contrasts the country’s struggling economy with the boom in prostitution in small towns and as well as the big cities. The article focuses on what it calls the ruthless trafficking of foreign women and uses La Jonquera near the French border to make its point. Until recently this was a quiet border town where truckers rested and the French came to buy handpainted pottery and leather goods. But today its most important business is prostitution – as it is elsewhere in Spain, the article says. In the past, most customers were middleaged men but today’s boom is powered largely by young men “travelling in packs for the weekend”.

Barcelona councillor Francina Vila i Valls told the paper: “The young used to go to discos but now they go to brothels. It’s just another form of entertainment to them.” Nearly 90 per cent of an estimated 400,000 women working in prostitution in Spain are trafficked, brought under false pretences from Eastern Europe and Nigeria. Police officials and women’s groups say that the number of victims is growing. Many factors contribute to the boom in the sex industry here, the article says, including porous borders and the fact that until 2010, Spain did not even have “a law that distinguished trafficking from illegal immigration”. But arrests of traffickers are few. Figures for 2010 – the latest available – show that the Spanish government prosecuted 202 trafficking suspects and convicted 80.

Some politicians would like to see prostitution outlawed in Spain, the article says, but many women’s groups say that this would only force prostitution underground, making it even harder to help trafficked women.

What the national press lamented most about the article was that it gave Spain the sort of image that would not attract family tourism – which the country needs more than young men looking for sexual kicks.

The National Police have busted a gang of Nigerians who distributed cocaine in Spain and the rest of Europe. They arrested 15 people last week, including several mules who worked for the gang. The investigation began last September when a mule carrying 1,350 grams of cocaine in 77 pellets in his stomach was arrested at Palma airport. The arrests were made in madrid, Guadalajara, Valencia and Palma de mallorca, during raids in which four kilos of cocaine and €17,000 were seized. madrid

Inditex expands in China a spokesman for inditex, which owns the Zara brand of clothing, said the company will have 425 outlets in China by the end of the year, making the asian tiger its second biggest market – it currently has 275 outlets there. ‘Smallest town’ auctioned

Philippine Airlines, Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have announced changes to flight paths to avoid a North Korean rocket launch. Philippine officials have also declared a no-fly zone and warned ships and fishing boats to avoid the area where rocket debris could fall. The announcements came as North Korea entered the final stages of preparation for the launch despite international criticism and pressure to cancel it. The rocket is to be launched between April 12th and 16th to put a ''working satellite'' in orbit for research purposes and mark the 100th to anniversary of the birth of the country’s late leader

Mr sammons, 60, has lived there since 1980. When his son moved away several years ago, Mr sammons became Buford's only resident. Kim Il-sung. But opponents of the move fear it is a disguised test of longrange missile technology. A Pentagon spokesman said US Defence Secretary

Iran 'blocks' Olympics website Users in Iran tweeted on Monday that the government appears to have blocked the official website for the London 2012 Olympic Games. They said they are unable to connect to it and are instead redirected to a site offering stories from Iran's official news agencies. Such website bans are not uncommon but their source is difficult to determine because the blocking process is not related to a single specific organisation. The government's Internet

Filtering Committee is in charge of the process, but individual judges can also order a web filter. Iran has already intimated it might boycott the Olympics over claims that the official logo spells the word "Zion" – a Hebrew word used to refer to Israel or Jerusalem. In February 2011 the Iranian authorities

called for the logo to be withdrawn but a follow-up letter later made clear its athletes would still participate. Weightlifting super heavyweight, Behdad Salimikordasiab, who won gold in the Asian Games in 2010 despite being affected by swine flu, is expected to take part.

French election campaign begins The campaign for the first round of France's presidential election officially started on Monday, with President Nicolas Sarkozy ahead in the polls for the first round but with Socialist rival François Hollande predicted to win the second round. Campaigning is due to end on April 21st.

The first round takes place the following day, with the run-off on May 6th. The ten candidates who are running are allowed a strict 43 minutes of campaigning on television before April 20th and they are banned from seeking donations and from denigrating their opponents, under the strict rules of the

audio-visual authority (CSA). Each candidate is given 18 slots, 10 lasting 90 seconds and eight lasting three-and-a-half minutes. According to the CSA, more than 13 million French viewers watched the shorter clips before the first round of the 2007 presidential election.

UK News Chinook crashes An investigation has been launched after an RAF Chinook helicopter had to make an emergency landing while carrying out military training in the US state of Arizona in an unpopulated area near the city of Yuma. None of the Chinook’s crew was seriously hurt but it is not known what damage was sustained by the craft. Military

spokeswoman Michelle Dee said the crew were practising how to land the helicopter when “something went wrong”. Manoeuvres were being carried out in the mountainous area just 15 miles from Yuma as it has a similar environment to that which military personnel have to face when serving in Afghanistan.

ree dead and two critical after accident

With just over 100 days to go until London 2012, Olympic organisers are trying to ensure the capital puts on a gold medal winning performance off the track too.

Three people were left dead and two others are fighting for their lives in Leeds General Infirmary after a road traffic accident on the A614 in the village of Cowick, East Yorkshire at around 1.30 in the afternoon last Saturday.

Seventy productions are being put on by the Royal Shakespeare Company with traditional and updated versions of the Bard’s plays being produced to entertain the thousands of people who will be travelling to the city.

The accident, which took place on the Aire and Calder bridge over the canal, left two drivers and one front-seat passenger dead at the scene and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Directors from Iraq, Mexico and Brazil have

Three ambulances, two rapid response paramedic teams, police and firefighters attended the accident and a crane had to be brought in to lift the vehicles off the bridge.

been brought in and say that the plays are as relevant today as they were 400 years ago. Shakespeare’s plays often focus on gore, murder and illegality “with a promise of an execution in a couple of hours”., according to one producer The idea is that the Games should be augmented by displaying the cultural side of Britain too and this has always been part of the overall package for visitors to England this year.

Can’t win the millions Labour has demanded that new rules that ban those living oversees from playing the UK National Lottery should not apply to those serving in the UK military abroad saying that it “is unfair”. Reforms that come into effect from April 23rd mean that players will be blocked from accessing their accounts internationally. The shadow Defence secretary Jim Murphey has written to lottery organisers Camelot calling for

allowances to be made for soldiers who are sent overseas “to protect our country, often at short notice” to ensure they have a chance at winning millions the same as everyone else resident in the UK. A spokesperson for Camelot said: “As long as players only make changes to their account while they are physically located in the UK or Isle of Man, their tickets will be valid if they travel overseas.

A 25-year-old company director, Ashley Charles from Nevanthon Road, Leicester, has been remanded in custody accused of murder after an attack on another reveller with a bottle at a party held by the smartphone company Blackberry at the Pulse nightclub in Southwark, Central London, last Tuesday night. The bottle was apparently smashed into the neck of 37-year-old a Phillip Sherriff, telecommunications professional and father of two who died at the Royal London Hospital on Sunday morning. Doctors battling to save his life later

had to operate on his skull to remove pressure from an injury to his brain. A Scotland Yard spokesman said that a post mortem examination would be carried out in due course. Brit award-winning singer Jessie J had been performing at the party earlier and spoke of her shock on Twitter. Charles appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates Court and answered only to confirm his name and date of birth. He was refused bail and ordered to attend Inner London Crown Court on April 20th.

Hamza to go

BIG BLUE BOX

Radical preacher Abu Hamza can be extradited to the United States to face terrorism charges, the European Court of Human Rights ruled yesterday (Tuesday). The court decided there would not be a violation of the European human rights code, which prohibits inhuman and degrading treatment, if Hamza is sent to America. In total, the judges ruled five of six extradition cases – all concerning alleged international terrorists – to the US can go ahead. As well as the preacher, the four other cases are Babar Ahmad, Haroon Rashid Aswat, Syed Tahla Ahsan and Adel Abdul Bary. The case of a sixth man, Khaled al Fawwaz, was adjourned because further submissions are needed about his schizophrenia and detention at Broadmoor Hospital. Judges rejected the men's claims they could face prison conditions and jail terms that would expose them to "torture or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment". The ruling is a boost for the Government, although the court stressed that it only becomes final after three months if there is no further appeal. Home Secretary Theresa May welcomed the decision and said the suspects would be handed over "as quickly as possible". Prime Minister David Cameron also hailed the ruling, saying: "I am very pleased with the news. It is quite right that we have proper legal processes, although sometimes one can get frustrated with how long they take." Between 1999 and 2006, the six men were all indicted on terrorism

charges by the US and their extradition requested – leading to their arrests in Britain. Ahmad and Ahsan are accused of various offences, including supporting terrorists and conspiracy to kill and maim. Hamza, who is already serving a seven-year sentence in Britain for soliciting to murder and inciting racial hatred, was charged with 11 offences relating to the kidnap of hostages in Yemen in 1998, promoting violent jihad in Afghanistan and conspiring to set up a jihad training camp in Oregon. Aswat was indicted as Hamza's conspirator in the latter charges. Meanwhile, Bary and al Fawwaz were indicted over their alleged involvement in or support of the bombing of US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in 1998. They launched a battle to block extradition in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg after attempts to do so in the English courts failed. Arguments that the move would expose the suspects to the risk of the death penalty or

extraordinary rendition or lead to a denial of justice were rejected in 2010. Now their remaining claims about possible detention in a so-called supermax prison, ADX Florence, and the length of potential sentences have also been dismissed. The decision comes months after the UK was refused permission to deport Abu Qatada to Jordan, where he is wanted on terrorism charges, without assurances that evidence gained through torture would not be used at his trial. Ahmad's father Ashfaq told Sky News his family were "very disappointed" by the decision and insisted his son – who has already been held for eight years without trial – should be tried in the UK. "Babar is a British citizen accused of a crime said to have been committed in the UK and all the evidence against him was gathered in this country," he said. "Nevertheless, British justice seems to have been sub-contracted to the US. This should be immediately rectified by putting Babar on trial in the UK and ordering a full public inquiry into the matter."

said to give judges in these cases clear direction rather than actually bringing in new legislation and it is hoped they will be implemented by this summer. Theresa May said: “By the summer, we will have new immigration rules which I believe will end the abuse. If it doesn’t – if it’s

tested in the courts and we find there’s a problem – we’ll obviously look at other measures, but I’m confident in what we’re proposing to do.”

‘Selling’ Easter Week

Political deal still in works

A report by Malaga University (UMA) has criticised what it calls the “scarce visibility” of the city’s Easter celebrations, which are only surpassed by the internationally famous ones in Seville.

Andalucia still has no official government as the Socialist Party and the United Left (IU) continue to hammer out a pact to keep the Popular Party (PP) from governing the region.

The report points out that Holy Week processions in Malaga cannot be considered a merely religious celebration because thousands of tourists come from all over Spain and abroad to see them. The report was financed by the Tears and Favours (Lagrimas y Favores) Foundation which was set up by Antonio Banderas, who is also its president. Banderas has being coming

to Malaga for the past 10 years with directors and scriptwriters from the United States and Britain “who knew nothing about the celebrations and couldn’t believe they had received no information about them”, the actor has said. He believes Holy Week has huge tourist potential “if we know how to sell it”. The

local companies for not taking advantage of the celebrations, by organising visits to the workshops that produce the statues and religious uniforms or gastronomic tours of the city. It urges the companies and the provincial government to start thinking of “packaging” Easter Week as a tourist attraction.

Graffiti clean-up Fuengirola town council has begun a campaign to limit the spread of graffiti and confine it to authorised areas. A regulation was passed in 2009, aimed at cleaning up the town’s walls but had not been enforced until March this year, when 15 home owners were told to get rid of the graffiti adorning their properties. A council spokesman said all had complied with the order and that others would follow until the town is cleaned up. Contravening the regulation will lead to fines ranging from €900 to €3,000.

because their uniforms are very similar to their Spanish counterparts. The area draws many Portuguese tourists but that is only one of the reasons behind the mixed patrols. They are part of an EU initiative aimed at eventually standardising the way the EU’s police forces deal with tourists. The Portuguese agents here normally patrol the streets

of Lisbon, but members of the National police were taking care of that for them in a joint exchange programme. No information is available yet as to when British bobbies will be seen patrolling Costa towns.

The two sides have been formally discussing their options since April 3rd. Members of the regional parliament will meet on April 19th to draw up committees and elect a speaker, who will most probably be from the IU. However, it is still unknown what type of agreement the two parties will reach, or whether the IU will even support the swearing in of incumbent Socialist regional premier José Antonio Griñán. Timber merchants goes up in flames Only two of the five buildings at the Mansur timber merchants in Coin survived a blaze which broke out just before 9 am on Easter Sunday morning. The buildings that were destroyed were the wood storage depot, the offices, and the warehouse where the company's products were displayed. Firemen were able to save one wood storage deposit and the building that stored fuel, sawdust and paint and chemical products. Malaga Provincial Fire Brigade arrived quickly on the scene and managed to get the blaze under control just before noon, with the help of a fire bucket helicopter, nine water tanks, 28 fire fighters, Coin's Proteccion Civil, the Local Police and the Guardia Civil. The debris continued to smoulder for most of the day and into the night. Maderas Menur, on the poligono on the outskirts of Coin, was well-known locally for its distinctive little tower – looking for all the world like a Disney film set. As the fire took hold it was enveloped in the black smoke and flames and as the roof caved in the tower too vanished, leaving only a burnt-out shell below.

Vandalism down Destructive behaviour in schools, parks, squares and at the beach dropped last year by 25 per cent over 2010. The local Police said the only vandalism that had slightly increased was setting fire to rubbish containers. The drop means that the local council will save some money in repairs because it is not always possible to catch the vandals and make them pay. The police said only five people were arrested for vandalism last year, although there were a total of 53 incidents. mAlAgA

Prisoners work off sentences Just under 100 prisoners have worked off their sentences by doing community work during the past three years as a result of an agreement between the Interior ministry and the Federation of municipalities and Provinces (FEmP). City councillor Francisco Pomares said the agreement only applied to prisoners who were serving time for minor offences or were in jail because they did not have the money to pay their fines. He said most of them had done cleaning or maintenance work with different council departments.

Poor Spain

O

n top of all her troubles Spain is now being used as a weapon in the French presidential campaign, with Sarkozy saying to the voters – look what seven years of Socialist government did to Spain, do we want to go down the same road? The Spanish Socialists’ reaction was not long in coming. The party’s deputy general secretary, Elena Valenciano, immediately called on Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to make a formal complaint and tell Sarkozy to keep his nose out of Spanish affairs. However, Rajoy himself had said only a few days earlier that the Socialists are to blame for all our current troubles so he’s not likely to tell Sarkozy to shut up. But it was a storm in a teacup – as so much else is in the current political climate. The Socialists soon shut their mouths before too many people started remembering too many things from the recent past.

T

ake the date when the current crisis started to make itself felt in Spain, for example. We know there were outside factors beyond Spain’s control but it might have helped if Zapatero had admitted there was a crisis – which he now says started here in 2007, during a speech to a businessmen’s conference in Madrid a couple of weeks back. But what was he saying at the time? – exactly what the title of an article by British historian Henry Kamen, published in El Mundo on September 5th, 2008 said – “Crisis? What crisis?” He even called Rajoy a traitor mentioning the dreaded word and the press rather facetiously began referring to it as the “c” word. However, we must remember that in the summer of 2007, the Socialists were gearing up for a general election in March 2008, which is why the “c” word was banned, in public at least. The ploy worked. An electorate which had become used to the boom years, was unwilling to acknowledge the existence of a rapidly worsening economic crisis so it allowed itself to be lulled by the Socialists’ lies and duly voted them back in.

Z

apatero finally said the word “crisis” during a television interview in July 2008, but insisted that Spain’s banks were solid and that there was enough money to weather the storm. A couple of weeks later the Daily Telegraph affirmed that “Spain is speeding towards the worst crisis since the Franco dictatorship”. But Zapatero, his then Finance minister Pedro Solbes and the future finance minister Elena

Using bailout as shock therapy Salgado continued to waffle on about seeing “green (economic) shoots” everywhere.

M

eanwhile, economic observers not sympathetic to the government were wondering if Zapatero had been indulging in a bit of indirect vote-buying. There was the socalled baby cheque, a one-off payment of €2,500 for new mothers, a housing subsidy for young people of €200 a month, an increase of grants for students who belonged to their party or whose parents did, an increase of 30 per cent in the ERE subsidies to help companies with economic problems in Andalucia and Extremadura (most of which went into the pockets of the politicians and their friends), and a 40 per cent rise in pensions in 2008 (which Zapatero froze two years later), to mention but a few. All of these hand-outs went overboard when the EU finally forced Zapatero to wake up to his country’s economic reality in May 2010. No doubt the Socialists are still blaming their crushing defeat in last November’s elections on the cuts Zapatero made then, but a more likely reason was that most people had begun to realise that they were in the middle of an economic crisis and were sick of piein-the-sky promises that threw good money (which the government didn’t have) after bad and only made things worse.

A

ll recent opinion polls show that the Spaniards are resigned to tightening their belts this year because they think things may start getting better towards the end of next year, which is what most national and international pundits are predicting. Rajoy’s popularity has dropped slightly but he’s still ahead of opposition leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba. I suspect he’ll have the last laugh. His economic policies will start bearing fruit in 2014 – just before the election which will have to be held in November 2015.It’s a case of history repeating itself. Jose Maria Aznar had to clean up the economic mess left by the Socialists in 1996, which he duly did and earned himself another term in power, handing a very healthy economy to Zapatero in 2004.

B

y this time next week, we may know if Andalucia has a working government. The Socialists and the Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) are still trying to work out a deal, but more on that when they do.

W

hatever Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is trying to do apparently isn’t working. After announcing some €10 billion in spending cuts in health and education – two areas that hold the most delicate balance in Spanish society – the markets continued to punish Spain by sending the country’s premium risk soaring to 412 basis points over the benchmark German bund for the second session in a row at the bourse’s opening day on Tuesday. On Thursday, the cost of servicing Spanish debt for 10-year bonds closed at 402 after touching the 409-basispoint mark earlier that session, the last day of market activity before the long Easter weekend. Not since November have we seen the risk premium climb above the 400-mark in such volatile sessions. The Rajoy government tried to calm the markets before they opened after the holiday by announcing the €10 billion slice in education and health on top of the €27.3 billion in spending from this year’s budget but this Popular Party (PP) administration is no expert in drumming up confidence. Part of the problem lies in Rajoy’s penchant for being vague on details concerning where all these cuts will be made and, most importantly, how they will affect Spaniards. Finance Minister Cristóbal Montero says he will announce plans for health reform in two weeks which is only going to stir up a lot of speculation and discontent until then. Being discreet just to keep angry, concerned citizens at bay for the meantime is far from the best remedy to calm overseas investors.

question at this time. I personally don’t think there will be a need for an outside rescue plan but then again I often wonder whether such a move is needed as good shock therapy for both leaders in Brussels and Spanish businesses who have not done their part in the overall effort to help people find and keep their jobs.

T

he European Investment Bank has some €40 billion in its coffers that it could use, but under very strict rules, to stimulate the economies of nations, which need it the most. Job packages, public works projects – Spain still needs a lot of modernisation – and small business development plans are three areas that need to be looked at. But the real powers behind the European Union, the Merkozy faction, have refused to budge. Both the German and French leaders prefer that countries take on their own cost-cutting tasks without affording any new ideas for growth, and at the expense of their own citizens. Both Merkel and Sarkozy opt for a strong euro zone but they want to do it their way. A Spain rescue package would no doubt be a disaster for Europe, a cold bucket of water for both of them (more so for the German chancellor since Sarkozy no doubt won’t be around after May 6th), an end to their “our-way” policies, and lead to a spiralling downward turn for the world economies which are just beginning to recover from their own crises. In Spain, it will also have a psychological effect, more so on business and labour leaders than on politicians, who will finally be forced to rethink the country’s job policies. And the social impact, of course, will be devastating.

T L

ast week, two separate forecasts issued by Citigroup and Standard & Poor’s put a big question mark next to the country’s economic recovery and suggest that Spain will eventually need a financial bailout from the European Union. The IMF is also set to release its next economic round-up in the coming days that will no doubt give a doubtful prognosis of the ailing Spanish economy – more bad news for investor confidence. The bailout scenario is the biggest

his apocalyptic scenario shouldn’t have to occur but something is not right. What Madrid does on Brussels’ dictation is not bringing the changes needed – or at least a glimpse of the better times to come – to calm investors’ fears. Now Bank of Spain governor Miguel Fernández Ordóñez says that Spanish financial institutions will need more capital if the situation continues to deteriorate. What can we expect if this situation continues to foment so much social discontent across Europe? Global lenders such as the IMF and the World Bank engaged in a round of economic shock therapies across Latin America and Asia during the 1980s, which only served to stir up riots and destabilise governments. It may be now time to inject some reverse therapy.

My husband was born in Cambridgeshire and I spent a lot of time in Oxfordshire. Both cities are beautiful and of course, full of Universities with their courtyards and spires so, the annual boat race finds us both egging on our respective teams. This year was no different but, just after the Surrey bend some idiot was found in the water and the race had to be stopped while the police picked him up. As the boats got to the swimmer, later named as Trenton Oldfield, he ducked under the oars and was lucky to escape serious injury from the blades and from the motor launches behind. This all happened at pretty much the halfway point of the race, 8 minutes into it and 9 minutes approximately to go. The people at Chiswick bridge waiting for the boats to come through to the finish at Mortlake were wondering what on earth was going on – had they sunk or what? Tweets and text messages would have assuaged their fears but the race was in a shambles. The launches following the boats can’t just stop on a sixpence so they also had to turn round churning up the previously flat River Thames. At the point the race was stopped, Oxford were just ¼ of a length ahead, but they had three smaller members of crew which means they have less resilience when something like this happens. The umpire had to make them wait a while to let the water settle for the race to re-start at Chiswick Eyot, a small island at that point in the Thames. The wash from the boats was causing the problem because it hits the banks at this fairly narrow point in the river and bounces back in rolls together with half a ton of debris which can be extremely dangerous to the boats and their crews. The river is always closed to traffic for the race but there is a flotilla of news boats and safety boats. The race was stopped for almost half an hour for the the river to settle somewhat but the mental and physical demands of

doing this are enormous on the rowers and changed the whole demand of the race. Cambridge were given a second chance and the dynamics of this year’s Boat Race had changed. Experts questioned at the time said that, had the race not been stopped, it was almost certain that Oxford would have won as they had just pulled ahead on the outside of the long bend in the river at the point of the incident. At that point, Cambridge would have realised that they had virtually no chance of pulling back and winning. The cox of the Cambridge boat turned their boat and rowed back down the Thames because he wasn’t happy with the conditions just before they were about to re-start while Oxford was sitting waiting in the very cold weather. All their preparations had to go out the window and they had to start a whole new phase of the race giving Cambridge a breathing space. With the water still choppy and the boats bobbing up and down – very uncomfortable for rowing – the two teams lined up equally for a moving start, they were not given their quarter length advantage again. The first start to the race saw Oxford going strongly forward from the standing start but a moving start did not give them the same advantage. Oxford took off like a rocket and after the second and third stroke were pulling ahead. However, Cambridge knew they had to pull up to get any chance of winning but at around two minutes into the restart with a clash of oars, Oxford’s Colin Swainson lost an oar and were done for. The race was not stopped because the clash was deemed to be Oxford’s fault and they had been warned to move over by the umpire, John Huxford who was a previous Cambridge boat crew president, twice. The 158th Boat Race was won by Cambridge with their cox, Steve Chappel in his second boat race who, at only 19-yearsold was the youngest of

both teams, and Cambridge’s 6th win was well and truly confirmed. Oxford tried to lodge a complaint but the umpire upheld Cambridge’s win. The umpire said that he listened to the Oxford cox’s complaint saying that she chose a route she thought fit but the umpire said he did not agree and ruled that Oxford were off their station and therefore had to abide by the consequences of the accident. Alex Woods collapsed at the back of the Oxford boat and had to be taken off the boat by the safety launch. He had been in the back of the boat for some four or five minutes, since the race had finished and while the Oxford crew were arguing. He was later taken to Fulham’s Charring Cross Hospital. This had been one of the closest fought races and one with what will be seen to be the most controversy. Oxford were the faster crew throughout the race before the first incident with the swimmer. First man over the line was Cambridge’s Dave Nelson who is in his second year at the university. However, there was not too much celebration with their captain saying that the whole crew was shocked by the incidents and the worry of Alex Wood’s ongoing treatment. Alex started rowing at Oxford and was one of the smallest of the lightweight (12 stone) members of the crew (the heaviest being Steve Holbeck in the Cambridge boat at 17 stone and six foot nine inches

tall). Later he was sitting up and OK. Alex is in his second year of his university course to become a surgeon. Oxford President Carl Huxford congratulated the Cambridge crew on their victory but the presentation was stopped due to Alex’s condition as it is a tradition that all oarsmen attend the celebrations. If Oxford had simply stopped rowing, the race would have been “race not finished” due to the disruption by the swimmer. In previous years, there have been rowers collapsing and in 2001, after there had been a clash of oars, umpire Rupert Obholzer brought the race to a stop after repeatedly warning both teams to move apart. There have also been six sinkings with the result being determined by a sinking on three occasions. Cambridge went under in 1859 and 1978 and Oxford in 1925. In 1912 both boats sank and the race was scheduled for the following day, while in 1951 Oxford sank and the race was scheduled for two days later when Cambridge won. Oldfield, the swimmer who caused all the problems, studied Contemporary Urbanism at the London School of Economics and has a website called Elitism Leads To Tyrrany which discusses civil disobedience tactics. He has been arrested. by Kym Wickham

The blue and gold are the colours of the Royal British Legion. The royal blue serves to remind members of those who have died in the sea or the air; and the gold band recalls all who have fallen in the field or died in service of their country. The tassels signify the beginning and end of life, and the gold cord is the symbol of the path along which people pass during their life on earth. The golden fringe and frame is a symbol of all that binds people together in one great brotherhood. During this meeting tribute was paid and a silence observed in memory of the nine servicemen who were killed in Afghanistan in the month of March this year, as well as the nearly 900 servicemen and women who died during the Falklands War, which began 30 years ago on April 6th 1982.

DAVID THE DOGMAN

Some dogs are so laid-back, they can only be described as couch potatoes; some are hyperactive. Some are Don Quixote types, permanently and vigorously defending themselves and their loved ones from imaginary enemies, in the form of any moving object that happens to cross their path of vision. Then you have the quality control freaks, those who are hell-bent on ascertaining that each and every object is exactly what it says on the tin… These types will chew table-legs to the core, to ensure they are made of real wood; they will chew your new designer shoes to bits, just to make sure you haven’t wasted your money by buying a fake pair; they will chew vital documents, your underwear, live wires – the list goes on and on… And they are especially interested in the quality of sofas; they will scratch (and scratch and scratch) at the surface fabric until a tiny hole appears (this is the

crosses of St George – the patron saint of warriors; St Andrew – the disciple of Christ, and St Patrick – the first Christian missionary to Britain.

Euthaniasia - part 1

point at which – assuming you were present, which of course, you are not – you could say “adios” forever to your precious sofa) and they discover… KAPOK, GLORIOUS KAPOK!! Pulling it out through that little hole for hours and hours, there’s no end to it – this is quality stuff indeed! Pure bliss!! However, very few dog owners who have had the misfortune of being confronted by the resulting scenario would describe their initial emotions as ‘pure bliss’… Prevention is better than

cure (and in these cases, it is also cheaper). For everybody’s sake, if you bring a new dog into your home – regardless of age or type – confine it to a space where it can do no harm to itself or your belongings while you are not at home. At least, until you are both familiar with each other’s personality. For more information on dog behaviour, contact: 952 904 973 or sylvia@barrysdogstore.net Sylvia FitzSimons Canine Psychologist

Your relationship with your dog is special. You are responsible for its care and welfare. Eventually there comes a most difficult life or death decision for the welfare of the animal and for you and your family. The decision is a personal one but it need not be a solitary one. Your vet and your family and friends can assist and support you. Consider not only what is best for your dog but also what is best for you and your family. Quality of life is important for pets and people alike. If your dog can no longer enjoy the things it once took pleasure from or if there is more pain than quality in its life, you may need to consider euthanasia. Likewise, if your dog is terminally ill or critically injured, or if the financial or emotional cost of treatment is beyond your means,

euthanasia may be the only option. Your vet understands attachment to pets and can examine and evaluate your dog's condition, estimate your dog's chances for recovery and discuss potential disabilities and long-term problems. A vet can explain the medical options and possible outcomes. But he cannot make the euthanasia decision for you. It is very important that you fully understand your dog's condition. If there is any part of the diagnosis or the implications for your dog's future that you don't understand, ask to have it explained again. Rarely will the situation require an immediate decision. Usually, you will have time to review the facts. Eventually you may wish to discuss the disposal of your dog's body with your family and vet. You have several options and your vet can

provide information about burial, cremation or other alternatives. Euthanasia might be necessary if a dog has become vicious, dangerous, or unmanageable. However, some undesirable and abnormal behaviour can be changed. Economic and emotional problems together with changes in lifestyle may also force an owner to consider euthanasia of a dog. Obviously it is better to find another solution or an alternative home for these pets. IN YOUR LANGUAGE! On Friday 30th March, Lux Mundi, Torre Del Mar held the Spring Bazaar, which went with a buzz. The event was attended by many friends of the centre, who had plenty of opportunity to purchase, book, preserves, videos, bric-a-brac, clothes and accessories in the boutique. They also enjoyed a flutter on the tombola and raffle, which had some excellent prizes.

Due to the clement weather visitors were able to enjoy their drinks and cakes seated in the beautiful, restful garden. And thanks to the generosity of the friends the sum of €724.47 was raised for charity. Lux Mundi would like to thanks all the helpers and volunteers who made it such a successful day.

If you are over 0.6ml/l the same would apply as for an accident. Documentation you must carry with you is: your driving licence – it must have a photo on it or it’s not valid in Spain, your residency details and if you don’t have the version with a photo, your passport, valid ITV and car papers (permiso de circunvalacion and ficha tecnica). Just as an aside, the only people who can fine you, at the side of the road are from the Trafico section of the Guardia Civil. And the only reason they can fine you at the side of the road is non-proof of residency – in other words, if you can’t provide your residency card or papers, you may be about to leave the country as far as the law is concerned and they will get you first! If you prove residency, they will give you a ticket for whatever you’ve done and you will get a 50% reduction if you pay within 20 days and 15 days to appeal against the fine, as you will be granted the same courtesies as a Spanish citizen. The Guardia Civil ordinary division as well as any of the other forces including the Policia Local cannot do it. They should give you a ticket to pay at a later time and, if you’re quick enough, you will usually get a proportion of it reduced for quick payment.

More good advice THE NEWS from the Consulate Last week Duncan Burrell from The News Helpdesk attended a conference given by the British Consulate Malaga that informed us of what to do in many situations including robbery and theft – both from the home and in the street, a report from Trafico on what to do about fines in respect of drink driving, licences, accidents and legal paperwork pertaining to these situations. In last week’s copy of The News we talked about Cybercrime, this week we’re going to discuss driving a vehicle after drinking alcohol. The limit for alcohol and being in control of a vehicle (driving your car, motorbike or whatever)is 0.25mg per litre of blood or 0.15mg per litre of blood if you are driving a public service vehicle, truck or if you are a learner driver. If you are between 0.25 and 0.6mg/l this is as an regarded “adminstrative offence” or violation of the law – to whit you would be given a fine of €500 and 4 to 6 points on your licence. If you are travelling alone, your vehicle will be impounded. However, if you are over 0.25ml/l and involved in a traffic accident of any kind, this would result in court proceedings, loss of your licence and a criminal record or imprisonment.

One hundred years ago this week, the unthinkable happened and many people lost their lives At 11.40pm on April 14th 1912, the RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage to New York struck an iceberg and the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic sank in less than three hours. On the morning of April15th, around 2:20am, the Titanic had vanished from sight lying softly upon the ocean floor. This was one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history. The story of the Titanic shocked the world and 100 years later continues to do so. When you read about all the things that could have

been done – if only they’d paid attention to the six iceberg warnings, or evacuated the passengers sooner, or had more lifeboats, etc. – perhaps the outcome would have been different. Sadly there is nothing we can do or say to bring back those 1,514 souls. Presumably the designer of the Titanic, Alexander Carlisle, felt dreadful when he heard the news, as it was his decision to have 48 lifeboats instead of 64 because he didn’t want the deck to look cluttered. How crazy was it that they would allow the

ship to sail with only enough lifeboats for half of the passengers! But even if Carlisle had approved the 64 lifeboats, there is no guarantee therewould have been more survivors, as no one believed the Titanic could actually sink. However, if they had evacuated when told to, they could have filled and launched all 48 lifeboats in 80 minutes. As the iceberg hit, it tore into six of the forward compartments. The Titanic could have still sailed with four of the forward compartments flooded, but with six ruptured it was impossible to keep the ship afloat. The liner was built as the epitome of comfort and luxury and she was the largest ship afloat at the time of her maiden voyage. She took three years to build and two men lost their lives during her construction – and she was said to be unsinkable. Imagine the chaos, panic and confusion when she started to sink – most of those who didn’t make it on

to the lifeboats died of hyperthermia within 15 to 20 minutes of being in the water, if they didn’t drown. Nine survivors were pulled out of the water, but three of themdied shortly after. After the Titanic sunk public inquiries in England and the US led to major improvement in maritime safety. One of the most important legacies was the establishment of the International Convention of the Safety of Life at Sea

Today, the 11th of April Guernsey’s auction house in New York City is auctioning over 5.000 artifacts retrieved from the wreckage. The collection has been appraised at $189 million and the items vary from a delicate diamond bracelet to a 17-ton slab of hull from the ship. Bonhams are also holding an auction of Titanic artifacts on the 15th,

however, this is an auction I’d skip, as not everything is from the wreckage. For example there is a copy of James Cameron script of the film and a copy of that cheesy heart-shaped necklace that featured in it.

Sharing the Holy Week magic

T

his year I was fortunate enough to get into Malaga to see some of the spectacular Easter celebrations which, of course, attract thousands of devotees and tourists, who throng the streets as the huge ornate thrones are carried in processions whose origins date back for centuries. The sheer size of these thrones – they need around 100 “hombres de tronos or throne men to lift them and can only be carried a few yards at a time – is amazing and the atmosphere is electric with a mixture of emotions. Even if you aren't a believer you can get swept up in the tide of

excitement as they slowly pass by, to the accompaniment of bells, Nazarenos (penitents) in their pointed hats carrying huge candles, and full-scale bands with resounding brass and drums.

I

n true Spanish fashion the religious ritual has festive overtones despite its solemnity. Peanut and candy vendors pitch their stalls on the routes of the processions, street sellers with an assortment of very secular helium balloons follow on behind. And the whole affair is very much a family one. The youngest members of the

brotherhoods process with the oldest – tiny little girls dressed in miniature blue velvet costumes with white headpieces, others in black (shepherded by older siblings) carrying baskets of religious cards to give out to the spectators, even smaller children similarly dressed but carried in proud parents' arms. And as the processions pass family members hail the marchers and congratulate them, and shake the hands of the masked penitents.

went into Malaga on Holy Wednesday. This is not one of the most important days in Semana Santa but Holy Thursday is and the thrones were being prepared for the processions to come. Now the thrones are normally secreted away behind massive doors but during Easter week these doors are opened to the public to share their secrets and we were able to gaze at close quarters while they were being dressed for the following day. The intricacy of the and beauty workmanship was only rivalled by the wonderful scent of the fresh flowers (all the thrones are carpeted in flowers, carnations, orchids, lilies, iris – so closely woven that they appear to be fabric). The position of each throne bearer is marked by a small label bearing his name on the enormous shafts.

corner of a street behind Corte Ingles – which proved exciting when one of the thrones didn't quite get the turn right and the last ten or so bearers had to mount the pavement to adjust the angle! Fortunately they made it (and so did we though we had to step backwards rather fast). On first arriving we were struck by the number of children lining the route, all clutching what appeared to be some kind of ball, others who apparently were holding lollipops. The mystery was solved as the processions approached. The penitents carry huge candles and the children rush up during a rest period and get them to drip coloured wax on to these balls which are brought out each year. One young man of 13 (pictured above) clutched a very impressive specimen which he had been adding to for eight years. Other youngsters were just starting out, but with equal

enthusiasm. And then we were intrigued by people carrying little white boxes – these turned out to contain doves which were to be released in honour of the Virgen de la Paloma whose float was expected imminently. Sadly our time ran out before she put in an appearance .

A

ll in all a unique and highly recommended experience. The Easter processions in the local towns and villages are delightful but in a city the size of Malaga the “buzz is exceptional. So thank you Sally for the idea and the transport, Pilar for the translation, Anthea (Dolan) for the photographs and Kaja for the company. Again next year?

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Mirror Mirror Director: Tarsem Singh Starring: Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Nathan Lane, Armie Hammer Well, there you are waiting for the bus, when two come along at the same time. And so it is sometimes in the land of fairy tales – Grimm or otherwise. This year sees the release of two new movies about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and there is a lot riding on Universal’s big budget ($100m plus) blockbuster Snow White and The Huntsman starring Twilight’s Kristin Stewart. But first out of the traps is Mirror Mirror – it’s

a lot cheaper, but it looks gorgeous, it’s frothy and fun, and the cast are clearly having a great time. Julia Roberts is on great form delivering her acid dialogue as the Wicked Queen while Phil Collins’ daughter Lily drums up a storm of support for her lively performance. The Queen has plunged the kingdom into debt and decides to set her cap at the fabulously wealthy Prince Andrew Alcott (Hammer) – who just happens to be a

dreamboat too. She decides to throw a ball in the Prince’s honour, and plans to persuade him to propose, so they can live happily after after and she can plunder his fortune for her own purposes. But guess what? The Prince spots Snow White at the ball and falls for her. She is, naturally, instantly cast out by the Queen and while wandering in the wilderness Snow White bumps into the seven dwarfs who take her under

their wing. They don’t sing Hi Ho but they do leap around on spring loaded stilts as they chase down coaches and rob them. Hey, they have to make a living. Anyway, when they are not robbing, they put their heads together to work out a plan to prevent the Wicked Queen’s wedding to the Prince and unite Snow White with her true love – and here the plot thickens. It’s all charming, lively and full of good humour.

Blown Away by Bengtsson A few months ago a friend of mine gave me a copy of Tony Bengtsson “Snake in the Wood Pile”. He told me Bengtsson sounded a bit like Ray LaMontage and that I might like him, and I tell you what, he wasn’t wrong. Whenever you get a new album, especially one of someone you’ve never heard before, it’s a complete experience – that exciting feeling of reading all the credits and notes on the album. Then once you play the album for the first time, every five minutes you’re picking up the case to see what song you’re on, deciding on which ones you like, to find out which ones you’ll play over and over. This album was a pleasant surprise, Bengtsson is amazing.

From the moment I started listening to this album, the songs sounded familiar, though I’d never heard them before. There is a comforting sound in Bengtsson’s voice that makes you feel at ease. When you play this album you would think the singer was from Nashville. The compositions, structure and voice, makes him sounds like an Alternate Country singer, but with the cry in his voice of Ray LaMontage (yes, I know LaMontage is Canadian), but you would never think he was from Newcastle. From what I have been able to read up on Bengtsson, he is influenced by Ryan Adams and LaMontage, and when you listen to his album, you can hear the influences. The song “Rebecca” reminded

me a lot of Whiskeytown, with the subtle fiddle playing in the back ground. Bengtsson’s lyrics are beautiful, but Adams s lyrics tear your heart out, however, in my opinion Bengtsson has a way better voice than Adams, and is just as musically talented as he played most of the instruments on the album. My favourite track on the album is “Twisted Symmetry”. The guitar intro is superb, it’s really

catchy and I find myself singing it constantly. There is a great selection of songs, from acoustic love songs (like “Why Can´t We”) to upbeat “go away” type songs (like “It´s Wrong”), another great song is “Who Can Stop the Rain”. This album is amazing, all I can say is go out and buy it. For a nice little taster go to his website www.tony-bengtsson.com you won’t regret it!

he sinking of the Titanic is he only entertaining Ttragedies one of the saddest Tfactor of this movie being in history, and if re-released in 3D, is that to there is any movie that represents this tragic event it is the 1958 “A Night to Remember” – not James Cameron’s “Titanic”. Fifteen years ago Cameron unleashed the over budgeted, over long and badly written “Titanic”, where cheesy implausible love story literally drowns the movie – it’s all about jack and Rose. Well, if you didn’t like it the first time round, I can guarantee you won’t like it the second time. Oh yes, you heard right. Mr. Cameron is releasing this “epic” in 3D to mark the 100 anniversary of Jack and Rose, sorry, the Titanic. ow, maybe it’s just me, N but isn’t this wrong? Who wants to watch “Titanic” in 3D? Isn’t the point of 3D to make you feel like you’re in the movie, so why would you want to feel you were on a sinking ship, unless you’re suicidal? What’s next “Saving Private Ryan” in 3D? Let’s be honest here, “Titanic” is hardly a feel good movie, so you’re not going to be walking out the cinema saying “Wasn’t that jolly good?” You’re going to come out feeling like you survived the “Titanic” and you watched hundreds of people die. We’re in financial crisis, everyone is depressed, I could be wrong, but I don’t think this is the movie the doctor ordered.

cheer yourself up, you can spend all three hours spotting the anachronisms and they are in 3D so they will stand out even clearer than before. One of my favourite “Titanic” anachronisms is the world map on the wall of the radio room shows countries with present-day borders. Yay! Way to go Cameron! think what bothers me the I“Titanic” most about Cameron´s isn´t the pathetic “I´m the King of the World” theme throughout the movie, it’s the fact that it cost around $200 million to make but there is no atmosphere, there is no feeling. It’s just a bunch of noddies bobbing around in a large pool of luke warm water – all the special effects take over, while the actual story of the Titanic sinks. f you want to watch a Ithen movie about the Titanic, watch the 1958 “A Night to Remember”. It is a more genuine, authentic, touching and historically accurate version and far better, but you´ll need a bath towel not a box of tissues. Cameron totally wasted a fantastic opportunity to make a brilliant movie about the Titanic, a film that could have surpassed all previous efforts, instead he devised a storyline totally entrenched in Hollywood love-story stereotype. find it rather distasteful of Iadvantage Mr. Cameron to take of the 100th anniversary of this tragic disaster, to re-release “Titanic” in 3D and cash in. Shame on you, Mr. Cameron.

The broccoli and ham combine perfectly in this creamy summer favourite, and If you use (cheaper) brown rice in this recipe, you don't have to add the stock gradually – it can go in all at once.

Broccoli and ham risotto ( Serves 4 )

Ingredients: There have been opportunities for growth and abundance and there are still many around if you are willing to put the effort in to obtain the best of what life has to offer. What has been impossible in the past could be feasible now and well within your reach. You are oozing sensuality at the moment and may receive many glances in your direction, this energy is great if you are in a long term relationship – expect things to hot up. Something just doesn’t seem to be able to be laid to rest and you could feel forced to engage in an argument that is never ending with no resolution in sight. Life has been chaotic of late but you are now entering a period of relief where the light at the end of the tunnel is in view. Hope is on the horizon and this will start your engine singing again. Passion for life resumes and you will find that your energy levels increase. This is the time to look under that rug and sweep it clean, face issues and address the things that you have let slip. You may have to confront others and take uncomfortable risks but honesty is the best in the end, even if it hurts in the moment. Be bold and brave and cut to the chase and you will move mountains. Where others may have taken you for granted in the past – they now realise that you are a force to be reckoned with. You have been making a real difference in another’s life lately and this project may have taken up a lot of your time and energy. You may now be plagued by indecision, however, by the weekend something will click into place and you will know that there is no other way to go but forward. The road signs will be clear and well marked; there will be no doubt of the right direction for you. You will soon be planning your journey and making your moves. This is a turning point month for you Virgo. You have been cleaning up some business and sorting out some loose ends after uncovering what needed to be dealt with. You can now feel free to move forward with ease, initiating a new cycle in your life, one that reflects new desires and a new focus for the future. Now your attention moves towards your finances. Positive change enables you to focus on the things that are important.

Emotional issues are right in front of you making you feel quite stressed and not your usual laid back self this week. You are possibly in the heat of something and you could be feeling let down by another’s lack of reaction to this situation. An event will bring this conflict or stale mate to a conclusion and you may find that this person September 23rd - is actually more valuable than you first thought due to their values of loyalty and dependability. LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

There could be a desire within you to lay low right now and take it easy for a while. You may feel slightly trapped in a situation and need time to reflect. Events taking place this week will give you a hint as to your future direction. Make sure you verify facts and information and do not take anything at face value; you may need others to prove themselves to you before you proceed. Speak up and make sure that you are treated with the respect you deserve.

What would you do? SCORPIO

rd

October 23 November 21st

It is good to remember Scorpio that no relationship is flawless, do not be tempted to get caught up in a fantasy that is far removed from the reality of the situation. You do have essential needs, however, that require an unquestionable depth in a partner. There are some pieces that are still scattered and need to fall into place before you can see how they will all come together. If you are taking a special person for granted, now is the time to set it all right.

SAGITTARIUS There is either a physical birth in the wings or a sense of a new beginning taking place in your life, whether it is the birth of an idea, project, plan or build. You are on the brink of a threshold and it may require that you take a few extra risks and chances. When in doubt trust your instincts they will be right on the money. If you November 22nd - are considering making a large purchase then this is the time when you are likely to December 21st do well with your investment.

CAPRICORN No more time for sitting around and debating an issue, now is the time to take that

action, you know what you want so what are you waiting for. Speak up and tell others what it is you really desire, if you do not ask then you will have to accept whatever comes your way. So take charge and control even if it makes you feel December 22nd - vulnerable doing so - you will be able to handle the strain of all your dreams coming January 19th true, I promise. As long as you are true to yourself everyone is happy.

PISCES

February 19th March 20th

You are starting to feel a lot more grounded lately and this in turn is enabling your optimism for life to spring back. A past issue may bring an unexpected pay off when you least expect it. Perhaps a surprise meeting with someone who can pull some strings and make things happen. It is all about who you know sometimes not what you know that is the key. Perhaps someone from your past is going to come back into your life.

Pieces are starting to fit together and dreams are reaching a point where they can touch reality. It can almost be scary in a way, as it is a sweet feeling knowing that you have been right all along. Now comes the challenge of being asked to put it all together and it is important that you think through the next step. Keep the lines of communication open and allow others to help steer you into putting events into action.

Many people like to share their opinion of what they would do in your place so today let's look at how we can get this message across simply and without fuss. If you want to say If I were you you can use Yo qué tú. Or In your place translates literlally as Yo, en tu lugar. Now you just need to add on the "would" endings to the full verb. To say I would you add ía to the verb Yo que tú trabajaría menos. If I were you I would work less. Yo que tú no comería tanto chocolate. If I were you I wouldn't eat so much chocolate Yo que tú compraría una bicicleta. If I were you I would buy a bicycle. Yo, en tu lugar, hablaría con el director del banco. In your place, I would talk to the bank manager. To say you would like something you use Me gustaría Me gustaría ir a China. I would like to go to China Me gustaría ver la película. I would like to see the film Me gustaría jugar al golf todos los días. I would like to play golf every day. And if you want to really get on people’s nerves by telling them what they should do you can use deberías - you should Deberías beber menos - You should drink less Deberías trabajar más - You should work more. Deberías dejar de fumar. You should give up somking. Endless possibilities by using Deberías and just adding on the appropriate verb but I don't promise that you will make friends and influence people. Ya está- That’s it Hasta el próximo - Until next time.

DNA has limited disease prediction

Bilingual kids are better multi-taskers

Children who grow up speaking two languages are better at multi-tasking than children with only one language, a new study for the U.S. National Hopes that DNA will make it possible to Institutes of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) has concluded. predict and forestall the diseases a person may suffer from have been dashed by a new study of data from 53,666 identical twins in registries from the United States, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway. The registries included data on 24 diseases, telling how often one twin, both or neither got a disease. Since identical twins share all of their genes, the researchers from Johns Hopkins University were able to ask to what extent genes predict an increased chance of getting a disease. Using a mathematical model, they reached an answer: not much. They said most people will be at average risk for most of the 24 diseases and concluded that while sequencing the entire DNA of individuals is proving fantastically useful in understanding diseases and finding new treatments, it is not a method that will, for the most part, predict a person’s medical future. Their one positive finding was that as many as 90 per cent of people would learn that they are at high risk of getting at least one disease. And gene sequencing could, in theory at least, identify as many as 75 percent of those who will develop Alzheimer’s, autoimmune thyroid disease, Type 1 diabetes and, for men, heart disease. However, with the exception of heart disease, there is as yet no way to prevent these diseases or slow their progress. And since high risk of an infrequent disease is far from a prediction that the

disease is in the person’s future, the information might be valuable but would not necessarily make much difference in the end.

The study of 104 six-yearolds compared those who spoke only English with bilingual ones who spoke either Chinese and English, French and English, or Spanish and English. They were asked to press a computer key when they saw a series of computer images of either animals or depictions of colours. When their responses

were limited to only one of the categories, all the children responded at the same speed but when they had to switch between categories and press different buttons for each category, the bilingual children made the changes faster than the English-only children.

Britain’s Got Talent shone last weekend … and Simon Cowell was utterly enchanted! There were a number of acts on this week’s edition of Britain’s Got Talent that defy any comment being made about them at all. However, there were two acts that came to the fore, much to the delight of the judges. Mr Zip (Zipprah Zafari is his real name) was first seen chatting to another contestant in the waiting area. He was telling her that nobody could keep Mr Zip down and he was going to “go global”. The poor girl had that “Get me out of here” look on her face and her relief when Mr Zip was finally called in to perform his bit must have been enormous. He was equally odd talking to the beloved Ant and Dec and, when he got on stage it looked as though the panel of judges were equally non-

plussed although he did a very passable impression of Prince Charles. His song was a rap number called “Where’s ma phone”. It started off with audience and judges’ faces alike looking as if to say “What the...?” but then he got into it and the whole place was clapping and dancing to the tune. Amanda Holden said at one point that it would probably go “straight to number one” and she’s probably right. There are few words to remember and Mr Zip (or Zippy as Simon Cowell has called him) is a real force of nature. You just can’t help but like the short, dumpy, bald little guy! The next act that was absolutely outstanding was a sixteen-year-old girl called Ashleigh and her dog, Pudsey.

She said she was given Pudsey as an eleventh birthday present by her parents and the two of them are clearly utterly devoted to one another. Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and David Walliams plus the entire audience fell instantly in love with the pair and their routine to “Meet The Flintstones” was nothing short of utterly brilliant. Clearly Ashley has been training Pudsey day-in day-out for the six years she’s had him and it showed. Simon Cowell was heard to say: “Now that’s what we’ve been looking for!” Praise indeed from Mr Cowell who often has not a good word to say about the acts! Have a look at both of them on youtube – you’ll love them! Now... where’s ma phone?!

Ashleigh and Pudsey - absolutely brilliant!

Gunged! Sci-fi, battleships and Twickers to be closed for housing for kids Rihanna Twickenham Studios in are West London threatened with closure and are in administration, expected to be bulldozed later this year to make way for a housing project. Stars including Steven Spielberg, Paul McCartney and Colin Firth have joined the campaign to save the studios that were first opened in 1913 – the oldest studios in the UK and home to classics such as Blade Runner, A Hard Day’s Night, The Italian Job, and more recently Oscar nominees The Iron Lady, Warhorse and My Week With Marilyn. Campaigners say that the closure will be a bitter blow to the English film industry but the government has refused to get involved despite the fact that there are at least 12

films are currently in production. Julie Walters (above) has written to Vince Cable asking for his intervention. A spokesperson for the government said that although it “will be a loss to the film industry” they have no remit to intervene as the studios are privately owned. The threatened loss of the studio comes a year after the British Film Council was disbanded.

Rihanna stars in a new action sci-fi adventure film based on a battleship. The film, called appropriately “Battleship”, is due to be released and from the look of the trailer, the girl can act as well as sing. The Earth is being attacked by aliens and Rihanna and Liam Neeson have to save us all. Peter Berg has assured board game fans that his Battleship movie does resemble the toy shop classic. Many fans have questioned the point of producers buying the Celebs who got “Gunged” at this year’s Kids’ Choice Awards included Justin Bieber, Halle Barry (above), and Will Smith – and it would appear that Michelle Obama narrowly escaped the gunge even though she looked as though she was enjoying every minute of it!

rights to the classic Battleships game as inspiration for the blockbuster movie. But Hancock filmmaker Peter says his movie is faithful to the game. “We never had a mandate that said, ‘You have to say, ‘You sunk my battleship!’” Peter said. “But, part of the fun was that everybody has played Battleship, which is a simple, stupid little game. It was a case of making reference of the game in a way that smart people can

respond to. Kids don’t care, but savvy adult filmgoers who can be especially critical are going to be like, ‘You know what? That’s actually pretty clever.’” Mind you, I don’t remember any aliens being around while I played the game - maybe I’m thinking of a previous version?

by email from the UK people have been told that the world will end on 21st December 2012 as predicted by the Mayans but it’s a load of old rubbish! On the other hand I am starting an insurance policy for people to pay out £1,000,000 if the world does end. For a premium of just 20 euros I guarantee a payout (by cheque) posted on the day of the Apocalypse which can be

cashed at any bank still standing after the end of the world. Seems like a winner to me!

Editor says: Just in case you were wondering, Ken was joking about starting an insurance policy so please don’t send him any money! I’m surprised however that I haven’t heard yet of anyone actually trying a con like this already.

by email chipped. He lived in Tarifa but his owner was on holiday here and the dog had got out. Thank goodness the owner had him chipped and also a good job he had his mobile phone with him. The wonders of microchipping eh!

Editor says: What a lucky dog and owner and, as you say, thank goodness he had bothered to have his dog microchipped so they could trace him quickly. Losing a pet is agony, as we all know, so getting them found efficiently and quickly makes all the difference.

Coin Easter Sunday morning? There was smoke and flames high into the sky and fire engines everywhere. The place where it happened was a wood yard that has been there for years and it took all night to get the fire under control. Well done to our local fire service, and to the guys with the plane who bombed the rest of the building to stop

them following suit. Editor says: I too was out walking my dogs when I saw the fire helicopter going over and smoke rising into the sky. Have a look on our local news pages for some photos, before and after the fire. Maderas Menur as was, is no more. The main building is just a shell.

The best time to see the planet Saturn is here. April and May 2012 are when the lord of the rings is easiest to spot and at its brightest.

S

aturn was one of the very first things I ever saw through a neighbour’s telescope when I was about nine years old and I think it was this image that first ignited my interest in astronomy. We have all seen images of Saturn and its rings – no child’s pyjamas are complete without an image of a crescent moon, stars and a planet with rings around it. But nothing will compare to actually looking through a telescope and seeing those rings for yourself.

O

n April 15th, Earth will pass between Saturn and the Sun meaning that Saturn will rise in the east at sunset, it will be at its highest in the south at midnight and will set in the west at dawn. It will be very easy to find as it is very close to a bright star called Spica. Simply follow the natural curve of the handle in the constellation of the Plough or Big Dipper past the star Arcturus and straight on to Saturn and Spica.

O

ur Earth in its smaller, faster orbit around the Sun is gaining on Saturn as we speak. We fly through space at some 67,000 miles per hour, in contrast to Saturn’s 22,000 miles per hour. So naturally there will come a time when Earth passes between Saturn and the Sun. We do this every year, and as we do so we always see Saturn opposite the Sun in our sky. Our passage between Saturn and the Sun is called an opposition of Saturn.

L

ike the Earth, Saturn is also tilted over a little, and so at certain times during its 29½ year orbit around the Sun we occasionally see the rings edge on to us as they were in 2009. And although the rings are huge in diameter stretching over 120,000km from the planet they are only about 20 metres in thickness. So when they are edge on to us they are virtually invisible from Earth. Now however the rings have begun to open up again and are visible even through binoculars.

T

he rings are not solid but instead are made from billions of tiny pieces of rock and ice – probably the result of one of Saturn’s 62 moons being broken up by the immense gravity of the planet. The fragments still continue to orbit around Saturn, forming at least a dozen separate ring systems divided by gaps between them. The largest gap is known

as the Cassini division and is visible from Earth through a moderate sized telescope. The largest of Saturn’s moons is called Titan and is actually bigger than the planet Mercury and is the only moon in the Solar System known to have an atmosphere of its own. But the majority of the other moons are tiny, being less than 50 km in diameter.

S

aturn is the sixth planet out from the Sun and is the second largest in the solar system, only Jupiter is bigger, and like Jupiter, Saturn is also a gas giant being made mainly from hydrogen gas with possibly a tiny metallic core. When you see Saturn through a telescope dark bands can be seen running around the planet east to west. And because it spins so quickly – a day on Saturn is only 10 hours long – it is flattened at the poles and bulges at the equator.

I

f you would like the chance to see Saturn through a telescope then the Mijas Astronomy Society are organising a series of observing nights each Tuesday evening throughout April. Contact Lee Osborne at lopropertymanagement@hotmail.com for further details.

The ISS

W

atch out for the giant International Space Station as it passes directly over southern Spain tonight (Wednesday 11th April) look to the south west at 21.40 and you will see it looking like a very bright star moving quickly across the sky toward the north east. You will have to be quick though as it is travelling at 17,500 mph and takes less than 10 minutes to cross the whole sky.

Nissan plan ‘confidence vote’ in UK Plans by Japanese car giant Nissan to build a new hatchback at its UK plant, creating more than 1,000 jobs at the site and in component companies, is a “big vote” of confidence in the UK’s car industry, the company said today. The new medium-sized model will be built in Sunderland in 2014, The announcement was made by Prime Minister David Cameron and Nissan chief operating officer Toshiyuki Shiga, during a visit to Nissan’s headquarters in Yokohama, Japan.

Lorenzo kick starts new season with win Jorge Lorenzo hailed his never say die attitude as the reason he prevailed to clinch victory in the opening MotoGP race of 2012 under the floodlights in Qatar. The factory Yamaha rider finally secured his maiden victory on the Losail circuit, overhauling reigning champion Casey

Stoner on the Repsol Honda RC213V to scoop the maximum 25 points available as he began his title challenge in the best possible fashion. Lorenzo, who crossed the line 0.852s ahead of Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa – who also caught and passed a fading Stoner – said he 'gave his all' to achieve a dramatic victory on the M1.

from seventh to second at turn one. Britain's Cal Crutchlow lived up to his pre-season promise as he outgunned his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Andrea Dovizioso to snatch a careerbest MotoGP finish of fourth place in Qatar. Crutchlow rode a magnificent race on the satellite YZR-M1 to pip Italian star Dovi to fourth after a thrilling race-long battle between the pair. Seven-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi's patience looks to be running out, after his debut on the 'all

new' Ducati Desmosedici GP12 turned into one of his worst weekends in the premier-class. Rossi rode from ninth on the grid to seventh during a tough Ducati debut at the same Losail circuit in 2011. Fast forward a year and, despite massive technical changes to the motorcycle following a season of racing input from the Italian rider and his mechanics, the situation was even worse. Twelfth and ahead of only the Superbike-powered privateers in qualifying, Rossi spent the early part of Sunday's race in tenth place, until a rough pass by satellite Ducati rider Hector Barbera bumped him back to twelfth. retirement for Karel Abraham and a pass on an off-the-pace Ben Spies returned The Doctor to tenth by the chequered flag.

There is a Grand Prix this weekend in China, but it’s the one the following Sunday in Bahrain which is dominating the headlines and looks set to dominate the agenda in Shanghai this weekend as well. One of the leading opponents of the Bahraini ruling regime yesterday predicted “violence” on the streets of the country if the Formula 1 Grand Prix goes ahead next week. Speaking in a discussion on BBC Radio 4 s PM programme, in which I also took part, Nabeel Rajab, president of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, said, “I’m afraid that it will turn to violence.. You see growing anger against the F1 here, it’s become a symbol of the ruling regime here in Bahrain.

“Some people say ‘Let’s separate politics and sport’, yes you can do that in the UK but not in a repressive regime where everything is in the hands of the rulers.” This threat is precisely what the teams are afraid of. In the last 24 hours one unnamed team principal told the Guardian that most of the teams want the race cancelled, or at least postponed, as they are profoundly uncomfortable about going there. Damon Hill broke the ice last week on this subject when he said, “It would be a bad state of affairs, and bad for Formula One, to be seen to be enforcing martial law in order to hold the race. That is not what this sport should be about. Looking at it today you’d

have to say that [the race] could be creating more problems than it’s solving.” And now the unnamed team boss has said, “I feel very uncomfortable about going to Bahrain. “If I’m brutally frank, the only way they can pull this race off without incident is to have a complete military lockdown there. And I think be that would unacceptable, both for F1 and for Bahrain. But I don’t see any other way they can do it. “We’re all hoping the FIA calls it off. From a purely legal point of view, in terms of insurance and government advice, we are clear to go. But what we find worrying is that there are issues happening every day.”

“What an amazing race! I put everything I have, all my energy into the track, this victory is because I never gave up, kept pushing and trying,” said Lorenzo. Stoner afterwards cited arm-pump as the reason he tailed off in the concluding stages of the race. No higher than fifth throughout a problematic

practice and qualifying, Dani Pedrosa came out fighting from the start when he rocketed

the

e Southern cricket Santa Maria Open 2012 league hots up Mijas CC vs Costa del Sol CC. Mijas won by 5 wickets. It was a scorcher of day at the Cartama Oval on Sunday when these two teams took to the field. CDS won the toss and elected to bat, opening with Alan and Azam who was quickly and unfairly dismissed LBW off a fat inside edge onto his pads. A few overs later Alan too lost his wicket LBW and as with CDS’s last game it was the top order, with the exception of Tony 25, who just couldn’t get into the zone and the middle order having to step up, with Phill once again making 35 and Deen, 16 runs, playing a fine selection of shots. CDS

were all out for 162. Then it was the turn of Mijas with Matt and Dave opening the batting. They slowly and steadily started to add on the runs at a comfortable rate but two hours spent at the crease combined with heat of the day saw them both off just after the drinks break after a 70 run partnership. The chase was on and Tom’s two wickets in the later stages of the game helped to boost the hope of a CDS victory but even more wickets by Imty, Phill and Jody couldn’t stop the Mijas

Spectators enjoying the sun

victory march with Paul sensibly playing out his innings to help his team to the target with only 2.4 overs to spare. As with every game between these two rivals, it could have gone either way. Mijas won this time by five wickets. Malaga go third

Open Triples :The final was between the team of Pat Fisher, Simone Morgan & Ilona Ott, and Michael Detheridge, Brian Todd & Lennie Dineen The early stages of the final were keenly contested and Pat’s Team were holding three shots to square the match at 9-9 only for Michael to take the Jack for a count of three. From this 12-6 scoreline, they applied relentless pressure and ran out as comfortable winners.

Open Pairs :“Hot-shots” are something of a rarity in competitive play. There was one in last year’s event and, on this occasion, we had two which came at key moments to decide the outcome of matches. Garry & Jenny Aldridge had the first in their opening match whilst the second came at a crucial time in the final. The Open Pairs final. pitched Gregg Ellwood & Marion Allen against their more experienced Benalmadena team-mates Brian Todd & Lennie Dineen, the early stages were extremely close and the match was tied at 7-7 after 11 ends. Then, just as in last year’s final, a “hot-

breakthrough came on 22 minutes, Monreal set up Isco to fire an unstoppable shot into the far corner. Racing looked poor even with 10 men and Malaga were creating chances at will. It took until the 64th minute for the second goal to come, and Carzola made amends for his penalty miss when a

Maresca pass found him in the box and he duly fired home. The last goal was six minutes from the end and a delight for Van Nistelrooy to head home – his 50th La Liga goal. A fantastic three points that takes Malaga into a Champions League position. By Scott Forbes

Ladies Singles :Margaret Kain and Mary Detheridge came through their Semi-Finals, against Nancy Shaw and Claire Dye respectively, to set up a final which kept the interest alive until the final bowl. Having lost the opening set, Mary needed four shots to win the second and take the match into a “tie-break”. Down by three shots, and a possible measure for four, Margaret decided not to send her last bowl, trusting that the measure was in her favour. Her decision proved to be correct so, with the second set tied, Margaret took the title.

included the Semi-Final win over Tony Gatter who himself had an excellent Tournament. The first set was tied 1010 with Garry playing a running bowl to take the two shots he needed from a re-spotted Jack. Alan dominated the second set with an exceptional display of bowling winning six of the eight ends played. This ended his run of nine semifinal defeats in the season.

Bubba Watson wins the Masters

Affectionally known as“Bubba the Blubba”after breaking down in tears following his amazing win at the first major of the year, Watson (68) and Oosthuizen (69), who started the day three and two shots out of the lead of Peter Hanson, respectively, played in the second-to-last group and finished at 10-under-par.

Bubba Watson then went on to defeat Louis Oosthuizen on the second hole of a playoff. Watson two-putted from 12 feet after hitting his second shot from out of the trees and from 155 yards away, curving it more than 40 yards to reach the putting surface of No. 10 in the fading light after a brilliant day of sunshine and little wind.

Day Three All the hard work consolidating in the first two rounds counted for nothing on the third day traditionally moving day, but for the Brits here, sadly moving the wrong way, tumbling down the leaderboard. Clubs face call to increase policing payments Football clubs should pay for the cost of policing a wider area around stadia, the sport's most senior police officer in England and Wales has said. Official police policy is to only charge for policing within grounds and the area immediately around it. But ACC Andy Holt told BBC Radio 5 Live that clubs should pay the full cost of managing games as trouble

spreads to other city areas and transport hubs. The Football League said taxes are paid to cover policing costs. It said football fans should not "pay twice for policing". Holt said it was his personal opinion that forces should be able to claim back the costs of disorder linked to games, instead of being restricted to just the policing costs near stadia.

our good holes were bad." Sweden's Peter Hanson made a late surge to take a one-shot lead over Phil Mickelson into the final round of the Masters on Sunday. After Lefty had made eagle on the 13th the roar from the crowd was immense. That seemed to inspire Hanson playing just ahead, and he birdied the last four holes. The 34year-old progressed to nine under with a stunning

And so to final round Sunday, and what a day’s golf it was to be, Louis Oosthuizen playing alongside Bubba Watson, got his round off to an unbelievable start on the Par 5 second hole, when he holed his second shot from 260 yards, becoming the first to make an albatross on the hole. It was only the fourth albatross in Masters history. Of the others in the hunt, Phil Mickelson was undone as early as the fourth hole where he made triple bogey six, after twice having to hit right-handed out of the bamboo shrub. Hanson never got going at all after a first hole bogey, he looked out of sorts and

never troubled the leaders. Matt Kuchar was playing steadily and always up there with the leaders. Of the European contingent Lee Westwood made a great 68 coming up just short, sharing third place along with Phil Mickelson (72) and Matt Kuchar (69) and Sweden's Peter Hanson (73), the overnight leader. Ian Poulter had a good final day 69 finishing seventh on five under, while Australian Adam Scott, last year's runner-up, carded a 66 that included a hole in one on the 16th to finish four under. England's Justin Rose (68) and Ireland's Padraig Harrington (72) finished alongside Scott in a tie for eighth. By Mike Kerrigan

Medal Haul raises stakes The flood of medals won by Britain at the Track World Championships in Melbourne has raised expectations for another cracking Olympics. Performance director Dave Brailsford anticipates Britain’s team will only improve before London. “We’ve got more to come,” said Brailsford, who described the haul of seven out of 10 Olympic titles on offer in Beijing in 2008 as a “quirk”. “There’s no reason why we can’t step up again, but then again everybody else is going to improve. Form’s going to decide what happens at the Olympics now.” Of the 10 Olympic events on the World Championship programme in Melbourne, Britain won five of them. Including both team pursuits.

Kenny Dalglish believes that Premier League referees remaining silent over controversial decisions means that "people might think there is a conspiracy". Ahead of the Reds' trip to Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night, the Liverpool manager bemoaned a string of calls made by officials which he feels have contributed to his team's return of just one win from their last nine league matches. The 61year-old coach believes that his team were denied penalties in recent games against Aston Villa and Newcastle and had a goal wrongly disallowed in last month's home defeat to Wigan.
