NATIONAL NEWS - HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY AFTER FALL IN BOTSWANA
Row over King’s hunting trip gathers strength The government has called for an end to criticism of King Juan Carlos’s hunting trip to Botswana amid calls for his abdication from some opposition parties. Madrid Socialist Party leader Tomas Gomez told reporters on Monday that the King had to "choose between his obligations and the duty of service of his public responsibilities, or an abdication that would allow him to enjoy a different kind of life". However the party’s national leader, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, has refused to comment on the matter: "We don't comment on the King's private life, whether it seems good or bad to us." He said during a television interview that he would
speak to the King about the matter in private because “he always listens to what people have to say”. United Left (IU) leader Cayo Lara said on Saturday that the King had shown “a lack of ethics and respect toward many people in this country who are suffering a great deal.” A spokesman for the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) criticised the fact that the King had not joined a waiting list for his treatment: “This just shows the extent of the monarchy’s moral degradation.” Both the IU and ERC want the
monarchy abolished. PP Secretary General Maria Dolores de Cospedal has warned against "casting doubt" on the monarchy because “to use one particular event to cast doubt on institutions does no favours to Spanish democracy or to our form of state and government". The King, 74, was flown back to Spain last Friday for hip replacement surgery after falling on a step in the early hours of Friday morning at the lodge where he was staying. At press time, the Royal family had

yet to confirm the reason for his trip to Botswana, well known as a destination for elephant-hunting, but to leave the public in no doubt, most Spanish newspapers have published a photo taken in 2006 showing the King standing with a gun next to a dead elephant. Along with South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, Botswana has not prohibited elephant hunting. It brings money into the country and is regulated by the authorities. ConTinued on Page 2

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Friends
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
We have had some friends over this week who have their own place here but live in the UK most of the time. It was great to get out on Saturday with Pat and have a wander round the shops - didn’t buy anything but had a jolly good look at what was on offer. The weather was “iffy” to say the least with black clouds threatening pouring rain and what seemed like hurricane force winds so we went down to the coast to see what it was like there to decide where we wanted to go. The idea was to take a trip to San Pedro or Estepona for a change and trundle around the old town streets but we ended up in La Cañada. Sugar lumps both of us and we might melt if we get wet! The boys were playing golf at Calanova so we didn’t have to drag them round. They both apparently played abysmally in the high winds so gave up scoring and just had a nice time playing as well as they could but without the competitiveness of a real game and they say they had a great time too. On Sunday we all went to lunch at La nueva Kaskada just up the hill from La Cañada and it was warm enough to sit outside and eat. We did get rained on for about five minutes but they put huge brollies up so we didn’t have to move inside and the sun came out again in a jiffy. So, a weekend of great company, days out and food was had by all of us. next weekend, back to housework as we soon have guests staying with us. Ho hum!

Minister wants Row over King’s hunting trip bigger classes FRONT Continued from PAGE
There are elephant-hunting quotas, with hunters paying “between €7,000 and €20,000” for each trophy, according to the president of the Spanish Hunting Federation, Andrés Gutiérrez Lara. Travel and accommodation expenses must also be added. It is a sport exclusively for the very rich. Some Spanish companies offer two-week elephant-hunting packages for a price of around €50,000, which can include a €10,000 refund if the individual does not kill an elephant. At a time when Spaniards have been asked to tighten their belts, the incident has raised questions about the monarchy's lifestyle. To make matters worse, the King is honorary president of the Spanish branch of conservation group WWF. An online petition on the actuable.es website has been signed by more than 46,000 people calling for the King's resignation from WWF. It is the latest in a series of
accidents suffered by the King. He has sustained several skiing injuries over the years, which are blamed for his current walking difficulties. In 1991 he walked through a glass door, injuring his arm, and last year another accident involving a door gave him a black eye. The surgery on his right hip was the fourth operation he has undergone in the last two years, the most serious being the removal of a tumour from his lungs. The King was flown home in a private plane immediately after his accident, in order to be treated by the same doctor who had previously operated on his foot and knee, Ángel Villamor. Queen Sofia, Princess Letizia and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy were among visitors to San Jose University hospital in Madrid on Monday, where the King was said to be already walking with the aid Hospital of crutches. director Javier de Joz told reporters that his mobility

Basque regional department education chief Isabel Celaá told the minister “not to confuse the search for efficiency with cuts,” while José Campos, of the CCOO labour union, called the proposed measures “a return to the 1970s”.

Promising a "clear and overwhelming" response, the government summoned Argentina's ambassador to Madrid, Carlo Antonio Bettini, after Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo had said the "climate of friendship" between the two countries had been broken. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was on his way to Mexico and Colombia, on a visit which had been arranged before the nationalisation. warned Argentina of the dire economic consequences, saying that “nobody will want to invest in a country that nationalises foreign companies”. However, the nationalisation was greeted with applause on Monday when President Cristina Fernandez Kirchner announced it at a meeting of her cabinet and provincial governors. Most of the other Latin American leaders support Argentina’s decision. Critics accuse President Fernandez Kirchner of resorting to nationalisation "as a way of hiding the economic and
social crisis which Argentina is suffering" which, some argue, was rooted in "a mistaken energy policy". Argentina has also been accused of running a campaign of "harassment" in recent weeks in order to push down the price of YPF shares and get a bargain price for the expropriation.

Before rumours surfaced several weeks ago that Argentina might take YPF from Repsol, the two countries enjoyed good political ties, and important economic ones. Screws on tax dodgers tightened The government has unveiled plans for embargoes on suspected tax dodgers to prevent them from transferring their assets overseas and declaring themselves insolvent to avoid paying tax. The measure was part of a draft law on tax fraud approved by the Cabinet last Friday. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría said it is hoped the measure will bring in over €8.1 billion euros this year. The law also scraps the statute of limitations in cases of undeclared income, limits cash payments in commercial transactions to €2,500 euros, with the exception of visiting tourists, where the limit will be €15,000 and also includes an amnesty for those declaring blackmarket money. The previous day, Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro had announced that individuals and companies will be required
to report all bank accounts they have opened abroad to the tax authorities. A subsequent statement issued by the Finance Ministry said the obligation to inform the tax agency of the possession of foreign bank accounts will also apply to other financial products such as shares, insurance policies and real estate held overseas.
Montoro had made the first announcement in parliament during the debate on a controversial amnesty for tax dodgers who will only pay 10 per cent on previously hidden income. The measure is expected to bring in some €2.5 billion. The minister described the amnesty measure as a “tax on hidden assets that once

brought to light would be a positive factor in normalising economic activity in Spain.” Montoro said the government had opted for these measures because they were less harmful for economic growth, avoiding others that would damage consumption, such as a hike in value-added tax which would impact on everyone.

‘Light at end of the tunnel’ The spokesperson for the Stolen Children Platform, Mar Soriano, said after a meeting last week with Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz and Health Minister Ana Mato that the groups her platform represents feel “more supported now than we did a week ago, they’re finally taking us seriously, there’s light at the end of the tunnel”. The ministers have asked for a complete list of children that are suspected of having been stolen at birth in a number of clinics around Spain, which were selling them to couples desperate to adopt a baby. The mothers were told they had been stillborn or died shortly after birth. The information will include dates, names of hospitals and clinics,

doctors and nursing staff and will go into a database that will make the search for the children easier. The government also plans to set up a DNA database. So far, 2,050 cases have been registered with Anadir, the association of people affected by the robberies, but a spokesman said the number could be as high as 300,000. To date only 14 couples have been able to trace their children.

Merkel blamed for Spain’s pain
N
The editorial noted that austerity, “the one-size-fitsall cure prescribed by Ms. Merkel, is not working anywhere. Despite huge injections of liquidity by the European Central Bank,
countries are slipping back into recession, unemployment is climbing and deficit forecasts are worsening.” After listing Spain’s woes which include “a depression-level unemployment rate of nearly 25 percent (and approaching 50 percent for those aged 16 to 24)”, the editorial warns that the Spanish are “in for even higher levels of misery under the austerity budget that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy unveiled at the end of March, after the European Union rebuffed his pleas for more fiscal
flexibility in the face of a worsening recession”. The editorial concludes that “these damaging cuts could have been less severe if the European Union had heeded Mr. Rajoy’s plea for greater short-term budgetary flexibility. They could be avoided if Ms. Merkel and her misguided
partners would finally recognise that restoring the competitiveness of Europe’s economicallyweakened south requires more investment in reform and growth and less obsessive targeting of short-term deficit arithmetic”.
More than 84 per cent of prisoners in Spanish jails suffer or have suffered from mental problems, the majority of them (75 per cent) because of drug abuse, according to a study of 707 prisoners in five jails in catalonia, Madrid and Zaragoza. Just over 20 per cent had never taken drugs while the rest had problems related to alcohol abuse. The incidence of mental illness in the population as a whole is 15.7 per cent. valencia

New World Bank chief chosen
Anders Behring Breivik, accused of killing 77 people in bomb and gun attacks in Norway last July, boasted of his actions in a statement on the second day of his trial in Oslo. He told the court: "I have carried out the most spectacular and sophisticated attack on Europe since World War II. He said he would do it all again and demanded to be acquitted. He admits the bombing and attack on a youth camp, but pleaded not guilty to terror and mass murder. "These acts are based on goodness, not evil," he said. As he closed his statement, pressed by the judge, Breivik said that he acted to defend Norway against immigration and multi-culturalism. After repeated interruptions from the judge to cut down his speech, Breivik agreed to limit his comments to Norway. Observers said his comments about Norway fitted in with his belief that liberal ideals are ruining the country and are the reason why he attacked the governing Labour party summer camp on Utoeya island and government offices. "I am not scared by the prospect of being in prison all my life. I was born in a prison where I could not

The court was briefly adjourned on Tuesday when one of three lay judges was dismissed for having said last July that Breivik should face the death penalty. Breivik's evidence will
be crucial in working out if he is criminally insane and psychiatrists in court have been observing him closely. If the court decides he is criminally insane, he will be committed to psychiatric care; if he is judged to be mentally stable, he will be jailed for 21 years, which could be extended to keep him behind bars for life. Breivik was found insane in one examination, while a second assessment made public last week found him mentally competent. On Monday, prosecutors played harrowing recordings of the events and described the fate of each victim in detail. Throughout the evidence,
Breivik remained emotionless, although he shed tears when the court played a 12-minute antiIslam video which he had posted online on the day of the killings. Breivik's lawyer later said that his client appeared to have cried over feelings that his attacks were "cruel but necessary to save Europe from an ongoing war". Police have sealed off streets around the courtroom, which was specially built for the trial to accommodate more than 200 people. Glass partitions have been put up to separate the victims and their families from Breivik.

US busts online drugs ring The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced late on Monday that it had busted a secret internet drugs market, where people around the world could buy LSD, ecstasy and other illegal substances. The ring – The Farmer's Market – is said to have operated through a computer network which allows users to communicate anonymously.
Willems, 42, was identified as the "lead defendant", and is believed to have created and run the network. He was arrested at his home in the Netherlands.
At least eight people have been arrested in the US, the Netherlands and Colombia and charged with drug trafficking and money laundering. They will be tried in the US. Marc
The arrests were the culmination of the twoyear Operation Adam Bomb. The DEA alleged that more than $1m worth of drugs sales were processed through the
sophisticated ring which used the TOR computer network between 2007-09. The Farmer's Market provided order forms, customer service and accepted payments through PayPal, Western Union and other means. It had customers in every US state as well as in 34 countries around the world.

south-western China, in November. On Monday, two sources close to the police investigation were quoted as saying Mr Heywood, 41, had been poisoned after threatening to expose Mrs Gu's plans to move money abroad.

UK News Money flying out of the UK Half a million wealthy people – calculated to be those with over £250,000 worth of assets – could leave Great Britain and move abroad over the next two years according to reports. This would amount to the most since post-war times and is said to be due
to the amount of tax restrictions and red tape they have to put up with in the UK. The last time this happened– known as “the brain drain” – saw many of Britain’s top brains leaving for other countries where taxes were lower and red tape less of a hassle.

Titanic remembered
Aintree row continues
It was exactly one hundred years ago this week that the world’s first supership sank to the bottom of the sea and throughout the UK people paid their respects to those whose lives were lost in the tragic events that unfoldedthat night.
God To Thee which was one of the hymns played by the band that was on the Titanic when she went down, its members having refused to try and get into the lifeboats, preferring to try and keep some calm on the stricken ship.
The row over the safety at Aintree race course continues after Saturday’s race saw two horses having to be destroyed. The horses were Gold Cup champion Synchronised and the popular According To Pete.
A memorial service at sea was held on the MS Balmoral with the band playing Abide With Me to commemorate the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic above the site where the ship still lies some two miles below.
Meanwhile in Godalming Jack Phillips, the radio operator who stayed at his post as the ship went down was remembered with his memorial being reopened following its refurbishment.
550 of those who died were from Southampton where, at St Mary’s Church on Sunday, a memorial service was held attended by the bishop of New York. The church was packed with relatives and locals who listened to Nearer My
Photographs that were taken in 2004 were released for the first time to mark the occasion showing people’s boots and some clothing still in the place where they died although the human remains have long gone.
Hundreds of people gathered to greet this year’s Gran National winner, Neptune Collanges in Ditcheat, Somerset as he returned home. Trainer Paul Nicholls said: “It was a wonderful performance by a wonderful horse.” He has now been retired from racing. Following last year’s disastrous race during which four horses died, campaigners demanded that some of the jumps height be reduced but wrevious ational Winner Bob Champion said that some of the measures that have been taken had actually made matters worse. Champion (pictured left) became famous as the rider who had beaten cancer and won the race on Aldaniti, the horse that nobody thought could possibly win. See the back page for more on this subject.

Hose-pipe bans News is emerging about 17 more counties now being affected by the drought in the UK – with half the country now suffering. With many counties having hose-pipe bans there have been calls for water supply companies to carry out better maintenance works to stop leaks that waste millions of gallons a year and the building of more reservoirs saying that it is ridiculous for a country that has as much rainfall as the UK to have any drought warnings at all. It is said to be the worst drought since 1976 – which was the worst for more than 100 years and saw people having to draw water from standpipes in the streets – and is set to carry on until Christmas.

Charity tax plans Plain condemned packets move
Ministers have been reported as considering changing their plans for tax on charitable donations following widespread condemnation of the plans which called for a cut in tax relief for donors – a move that was supposed to close a tax avoidance loophole – which could seriously affect charities’ financial positions. Currently high earners can claim more than half of the tax which, in some cases could reduce their tax bill to zero. However, under the proposed changes, the allowance would be limited to 50K a year or 25% of the giver’s income. Among those protesting were the head of Marie
Curie Cancer care, the cofounder of Body Shop and three daughters of the Labour peer Lord Sainsbury as well as nearly 50 donors writing in the Sunday Telegraph who said the changes would be a “brake on philanthropy”, but the treasury have insisted that the plans would go ahead. In the UK at the moment, “second hand chic” is causing waves with people rushing to charity shops to snap up the many bargains they have in clothes and household items. The new fashion wave has been welcomed by charities who have been struggling to make ends meet during the recession.
Qatada re-arrested Radical cleric Abu Qatada, known as Osama Bin Laden’s “right-hand man”, found himself once again detained yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) when officers from the UK Border Agency arrested the 51year-old in London according to reports from the Home Office. Qatada appeared at a special Immigrations Commission hearing late on Tuesday to make his case.

A Home Office spokesman said: "UK Border Agency officers have told him that we intend to resume deportation proceedings against him.”
The investigations will be looking into whether the proposed changes would have any impact on the number of people who smoke, and on the number of cigarettes each individual smokes – should all packets be the same colour and using a standard font and text on them, thereby effectively knocking out any sexy branding techniques employed by the tobacco companies. Anti-smoking groups believe that the new style packaging would make smoking less appealing, especially amongst teenagers but pro-smoking groups say that the moves are “a total farce” and add that it could boost the already large black market for counterfeit or smuggled cigarettes.
Strike Tens of thousands of health workers in the UK voted for industrial action to be taken in protest at the government’s plans on pension reforms, it was announced late yesterday afternoon. The action is planned for Thursday May 10th. More news on this next week.

Home Secretary Therea May updated MPs on the steps now being taken to deport Qatada back to his home country of Jordan which must give assurances that he will not be subjected to torture during his upcoming terror trial to satisfy European human rights judges who will not allow his deportation without them.
Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights passed at mid-night last night (Tuesday 17th April). Mrs May is not expected to appeal as the Home Office has been working to secure a deal with the Jordanian government in which it would give guarantees that torture evidence would not be used. But any move to deport him with these assurances is likely to be challenged in court by Qatada's legal team. The team applied for bail at a hearing at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission in central London yesterday afternoon, the Judicial Communications Office said.
The Health secretary has launched a consultation on whether or not cigarettes should be sold in packets with all branding marks stripped from them and larger health warnings added to the packaging instead.

The search for Madeleine McCann has been reactivated in Spain by a report from the Portuguese that places her in Nerja, according to the local newspaper SUR. The paper said in its Tuesday edition that information supplied by an informer was emailed to the National Police ten days ago who passed it on to the Judicial Police’s Specialised Violent Crime Unit (UDEV). According to the paper, its reliable inside source
said the UDEV was following up the tip off, treating it as “more or less reliable”. Since Madeleine disappeared nearly five years ago in Portugal she
has been “sighted” in several places in Spain – including Barcelona, the Axarquia and Malaga – but none of the tip offs have led anywhere.
100 kilos of hashish seized in Manilva The National Police intercepted an Austrian citizen on Monday as he was unloading wooden furniture which was full of pollen hashish, a very high quality hashish from Morocco, at a warehouse in Estepona.
Thin slabs of hashish had been hidden in table tops and other flat surfaces while furniture legs were crammed with sachets of the drug. They later raided a furniture shop in Manilva where more of the drug was found, bringing the total seizure to 100 kilos.
The Austrian was carrying false papers and was jailed on charges of misappropriation. A police spokesman said the investigation was continuing and more arrests were expected.
Man drowns off Marbella When a Chinese masseuse gave the warning that she had spotted a man in difficulties in the water off Marbella’s La Fontanilla on Monday, two young British tourists immediately went to his aid, bringing him ashore and giving him the kiss of life. The National and Local Police and the emergency medics arrived shortly afterwards but they were unable to save him. The Chinese masseuse said the man – later identified as a 49-year-old Finn – had not been in the water long and a police spokesman said that until the autopsy proved otherwise, it was assumed that he had died of a heart attack.

Luxury tourist train set to roll Considered the world’s most luxurious train, the Al Andalus will start rolling across the region again on May 6th. The train first went into service in 1985 but gradually ran out of steam and made its last run in 2004. The completely renovated 400-metre long Al Andalus – which brings back the luxury travel of a bygone era – has four “drawing room” carriages, two restaurants, one bar, a tea room and seven sleeping cars for 64 people.
Al Andalus was presented to the public at the Santa Justa station in Sevilla last week from where it will start out on a six-day, five-night round trip via Cordoba, Baeza and Ubeda in Jaen province, Ronda, Cadiz, Jerez and
Doñana, with stops on the way for side excursions by bus. The train trip costs €2,400 per person for a standard sleeping compartment and €2,950 for a first class one.

Nice work if you can get it The 109 MPs who take their seats in parliament in Sevilla this week will earn a minimum salary of €3,113 a month which rises to €3,913 with allowances. These include €200 a week for food and lodging for MPs living within a 100 kmradius of Sevilla. This goes up to €270 for those living between 101 and 200 km away, €340 for between 201 and 300 km and €410 for more than 300 km. The speaker gets an extra €1,356 while the deputy chairmen of committees and party spokespeople get an extra €965. Lesser officials receive extra pay according to importance in the pecking order. All MPs will be provided with a “mobile office” consisting of a laptop with ADSL and a mobile phone. MPs using their own cars will be paid 25 cents per km while the rest will get a travel allowance. Their social security will be paid but they won’t be able to go on the dole when they lose their seats in an election. However, they will be able to apply for economic help based on their former salaries for a period of three to twelve months.

Fewer immigrant workers hired the economic crisis is forcing Spaniards back to the land as figures for the upcoming strawberry harvest show. this year, only 2,547 seasonal workers from morocco have been hired – just over three per cent of the 78,000 needed, and just under half the number hired last year – 6,143. A provincial government spokesman said all the moroccans hired had been picking the Huelva berries for years and were “tried and true” – but this year “local people need the work more”.

Memo from
Voice Madrid Muriel Pilkington
Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
Shooting oneself in the foot
Cristina on the warpath
I
S
t was a bad week for the Spanish Royals. It started with the King’s oldest grandson, Froilan, literally shooting himself in the foot and ended with the King doing so figuratively when the reason for his emergency hip operation in a Madrid clinic came to light. The first incident hardly raised any eyebrows, even though the lad is only 13 and by law shouldn’t be handling a gun. But it came as a big surprise to most Spaniards to discover that their monarch had been hunting elephants in Botswana. No doubt we’ll soon have all the gen about “tourist elephant hunting” from Spanish journalists who will be digging up the dirt on the spot as I write. What we do know is that it’s a good money earner for the country – costing at least €30,000 a pop (literally) – and that rich Spaniards are among the most regular customers at the hunting lodges.
T
he King didn’t actually fall down fleeing an enraged elephant – he tripped on a step while making an early morning visit to the loo on Friday. We don’t know if he actually bagged an elephant on this trip but we do know it wasn’t his first.
G
iven their unfortunate penchant for shooting at anything that moves every weekend during the hunting season – most Spanish males probably couldn’t give a hoot about the King’s desire to bag an elephant. In fact, they’d probably opt to accompany him if they had the money.
S
o throwing up one’s arms and screaming disgraceful is a bit pointless, especially as rich people everywhere seem willing to pay lots of money to take pot shots at big game in Africa, or wolves, bears and tigers in Asia, where there are too many governments willing to cater to their search for the ultimate hunting thrill – at a price of course.
A
s you can gather, I do not approve of hunting. We had rabbit pie nearly every day during harvest time at my grandfather’s farm and I remember him going off and shooting a fox which had wiped out all our hens and geese. I also remember him telling the leader of the local hunt who called to offer his help to “keep off my land or I’ll see you in court”. No, in our family you only killed animals if you had to and never for sport.
S
o like many fans of the King – who has done more for his country than all the other European Royals put together have done for theirs – I find his hunting rather distressful. It’s understandable on the one hand because the hunting tradition is deeply ingrained here in Spain. But, as his critics are now pointing out, he has an image and a reputation to take care of and elephant hunting in this ecological age is a definite no-no.
nd in the end some good may come out of it. The opposition parties are now talking about writing what the King can do in his spare time into the Constitution. This would give the government an opportunity to carry out a few other constitutional reforms – I can just hear Rajoy saying “And while we’re clipping the King’s wings we might as well…..”
he had the gall to do it, and when she finally did, it took Madrid by surprise. Argentinean President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s decision to expropriate Repsol’s affiliate YPF in Argentina and fire its entire board of directors on Monday caused so much anger among Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Cabinet that officials are threatening to answer back with forceful measures. After weeks of speculation that the leftist Peronist leader was set to nationalise the oil company because Repsol wasn’t keeping its supposed share of a bargain to increase production to quench the thirst of an energy-strapped nation, Fernández de Kirchner made good on her promise in a nationwide address filled with nationalistic fervor. The government will take 51 per cent control of the petroleum company while the provinces will share in the remaining 49-per cent stake. Things came to a head last Thursday when the Spanish government warned that if she moved against Repsol’s holdings, there would be a big price to pay – nothing short of cutting “commercial and fraternal ties.” By the weekend, it look like things had cooled down and even government officials were sure that Fernández de Kirchner would not carry out her plan to send a nationalisation bill to Congress, opting instead for dialogue with Spanish representatives. They were all in for a big surprise on Monday.
Q
F
O
n the other hand, it turns out that Spain does not have a diplomatic mission in Botswana and while I’m sure he had plenty of security men with him, just imagine the headlines if the African branch of Al Qaeda had kidnapped him. I suspect that in the long run it’s the security aspect that will upset people most. According to an opinion poll on Tuesday morning, most Spaniards said they didn’t mind the expense of the trip – as long as the money came out of the King’s pocket.
A
ueen Sofia had apparently taken advantage of her husband’s absence to visit her family in Athens, where the Greek Orthodox Church was celebrating Easter. She didn’t come rushing back, the official statement said, because the operation was not lifethreatening. She finally visited him on her way home from the airport for 25 minutes on Monday morning – the operation took place on Saturday – and was her usual gracious self when she spoke to the reporters on leaving the hospital. But I bet she’s fuming inside. Nobody in the Royal family is more aware of the importance of appearances than the Queen.
W
hatever the outcome, I suspect the King’s hunting days are over. He’s apparently reading all about the reaction to his hunting trip in the newspapers and watching the TV news bulletins and is said to be preparing a statement for when he leaves hospital later this week.
N
ow if he would only give up going to the bullfights…
resh from a disastrous trip to Colombia where she attended the America’s summit this past weekend, the fiery, unpredictable leader appeared to be on the warpath. She was unable to get a consensus from regional leaders for a statement reaffirming Argentina’s claim to the Falklands to be included in a final signed declaration. In fact, it was the first time that the summit ended with no final statement issued. Besides the Falklands, the leaders were also divided over whether to allow Cuba to take part in the next summit to be held in Panama in 2015. Fernández de Kirchner was furious, and she channeled her anger to the summit’s host, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, who also got a good scolding for not mentioning the Falklands in his opening remarks.
T
hen came a second slap. During a sideline private meeting with US President Barack Obama, Fernández de Kirchner was unable to convince the American leader to remove the preferential trade tariff sanctions Washington imposed on Argentina last month. The United States removed Argentina from the coveted list of countries that enjoy lower tariffs for their
imports because Buenos Aires had failed to comply with international arbitration rulings in favour of compensating US companies for actions taken against them in the past.
T
wo strikes for Señora presidenta in just one weekend. Fernández de Kirchner needed to drum up morale back home so, instead of invading the Falklands, she decided to move against Repsol, which has been seeing dozens of its concessions cancelled in different oil-producing provinces over the last several months. The governors of these provinces, who happened to be aligned with the Kirchner Peronist faction, had been demanding that the YPF increase its output to meet the country’s growing demand for energy. YPF had maintained that it had increased its investment over the years, spending more than $3 billion last year, and keeping its production agreements under the country’s Law of Hydrocarbons. But on Monday, Fernánndez de Kirchner said that low production has forced Argentina to become dependant on energy and gas imports for the first time in 17 years. “Argentina is the only country in the region that doesn’t have its own energy policy,” she said.
A
ccording to Barclays Capital, oil and gas consumption increased 38 per cent and 25 per cent respectively from 2003 to 2010 but oil and gas production decreased 12 per cent and 2.3 per cent in that order during the same period. Economic growth and the quick spike in energy demand has also won popular support for the government’s stance on Repsol. But on the other hand the Kirchner government has also instituted consumer price caps for power rates and introduced high taxes on energy companies that have prevented them from pumping more money into the sector and increasing output. And now the battle over the Repsol has become one of public threats and deviance. Argentina’s leader said she won’t be intimidated by threats from Spain and European Union. In Madrid, Industry minister José Manuel Soria called the takeover a “hostile decision against Spain” and promised “forceful measures”.
W
ith a new nationalistic goal now in focus, the only thing the president has done was to turn people’s eyes from the Falklands on to an energy battle with a former colonial power. But with the entire European Union backing Spain, it is just a matter of time until Cristina Fernández de Kirchner will observe her own General Belgrano sink before her eyes.

Community News No to Medical Tourism Funding the (martial) arts The British Consulate in Madrid ruffled a few Spanish medical authority feathers recently and as a result have now issued a statement clarifying that they do not condone any form of “medical tourism”. The statement issued last Friday follows on from an article on the Consulate's website which was meant only to explain and advise on the health care rights and obligations of British nationals when in Spain. The Consular clarification was in response to a complaint from the Spanish authorities that the article would further increase the burden placed by “medical visitors” on the Spanish health services. EU visitors to Spain it appears seek to
obtain medical services that are not easily available in their own country and this is costing the already depleted Spanish economy billions of Euros. The British Consulate said, “Spain receives over 13 million British visitors every year. It is in the clear interest of both the UK and Spain that these visitors know how to access the Spanish healthcare system correctly in case of need. This prevents unnecessary administrative cost and ensures that the UK can reimburse Spain accurately and efficiently in line with the specific provisions set out in EU legislation. Our website advice makes clear that the European Health Insurance Card does not cover those who come to Spain for the specific purpose of health treatment.
The statement went on to say, “There are also many British nationals resident in Spain. They are entitled to access the Spanish healthcare system, just as Spanish nationals resident in the UK are entitled to access the British healthcare system. The aim of our advice is to ensure that they do so in full compliance with Spanish legislation, including registration on the “Padron””. The “Padron” is a confidential list of all those who live within a specific municipality for example Mijas or Coín and is used to calculate hospitals, fire services, police and other state benefits for each area. DAVID THE DOGMAN Euthaniasia - part 2 How do you tell your family? They are usually aware of the problem. However, you should review with them the information you have received from your vet. Long-term medical care can be a burden that you and your family may be unable to bear emotionally or financially, and this should be discussed openly and honestly. Encourage family members to express their thoughts and feelings. Even if you have reached a decision, it is important that family members, especially children, have their feelings considered. Children have special relationships with their pets. Excluding or protecting children from this decision-making process, because they are thought to be too young to understand, may only complicate their grieving.
Children respect straightforward, truthful, and simple answers. If they are prepared adequately, children usually are able to accept a dog's death. Euthanasia is almost always accomplished by injection of a death-inducing drug. Your vet may administer a tranquillizer first to relax your dog. Following the death-inducing injection, your dog will immediately go into a quiet and irreversible deep unconsciousness. Death will come quickly and painlessly. The act of saying goodbye is an important step in managing the natural and healthy feelings of grief, sorrow, and sense of loss. Your dog is an important part of your life and it is natural to feel you are losing a friend.. Once the decision for euthanasia has been made, you and other family members may want to say
goodbye to your dog. A last evening with your dog at home or a visit to the dog at the hospital may be appropriate. Family members who want to be alone with the animal should be allowed to do so. Farewells are always difficult. After your dog has died, it is natural and normal to feel grief and sorrow. The grieving process includes accepting the reality of your loss, accepting that the loss and accompanying feelings are painful, and adjusting to your new life that no longer includes your dog.

Astronomer of the Month
In an effort to raise money for Down’s syndrome children in both Wales and Spain, "The Welsh National Day" was marked by a fun day organised by the newly formed "Welsh Society – Costa Del Sol" in Benalmadena last Thursday with local acts such as Ricky Lavazza, Jason Oliver, Laura Elen, Mario Ross and Martin Broad performing. The event began at midday at The Blue Moon (Bonanza Sq.) and at 4pm at CJs Karaoke bar. Welsh food was also on offer for visitors to try. Top Welsh comic "Lenny Dee" also performed at CJs. All nationalities were welcomed to attend and enjoy this event, the first ever organised by the newly
Trumpeting good night out with T.O.P.S.
William Wallace Campbell (11 April 1862 -14 June 1938) William Wallace Campbell studied civil engineering at the University of Michigan, then taught astronomy there from 1888 to 1891. In 1890 he worked as a summer volunteer at Lick Observatory where he learned spectroscopy under James E. Keeler, whom he succeeded the following year. From 1900 to 1930 he was director of Lick, although for the last seven years he was actually at Berkeley as president of the University of California. After important spectroscopic studies of Mars, hot stars, nebulae and Nova Aurigae, he headed a vast programme of photographically measuring radial velocities of stars. He founded the Lick southern station in Chile and designed the Mills spectrographs. He discovered numerous spectroscopic binaries, and he determined the motion of the solar system with respect to surrounding stars. He also led a number of eclipse expeditions, one of which in 1922 confirmed the Einstein deflection of light by the sun.
This month’s observing tip. Do not think that you need a telescope to bring the
heavens closer! Binoculars are excellent, you can always have them at the ready in the back of your car. When you buy binoculars make sure that you get the biggest lens coupled with a modest magnification. Binoculars are described for instance 7x50 meaning that the magnification is seven times and the diameter of the lenses are 50mm. These are ideal for astronomy – they have good light grasp, and low magnification means that they do not exaggerate the wobbles of your arms too much. It's always best to rest on something solid like a wall or even a car. If you go for larger binoculars 15x70 then you will need a mount to hold them steady. A rule of thumb the exit pupil size should at the very least divide by 4 the diameter of the objective lens. Eg 7x50's are 50 / 7 = 7.14 these would be fine. 7x21's are 21 / 7 = 3 not that good for astronomy. Saying that, if that is all you have then it is better than nothing! But if you are going to buy for astronomy use, then please use the rule. Written by Lee Osborne of Astronomy Costa del Sol group
The recent show staged by T.O.P.S. was hailed a success by those who went to watch it. Entitled “TOPS at the Movies”, the show depicted scenes and songs from some of the best-loved films including The Jungle Book, Beauty & the Beast, The Wizard of Oz, and Grease to name but a few. A colourful set and even more colourful costumes set the scene for a fun-filled evening of nostalgia. The excellent audience on both nights got into the spirit of the evening and had the added enjoyment of a tasty three course meal.
formed society. The small Welsh community in the area were joined by Welsh holiday makers and the event raised an estimated 1200 euros for two Down’s syndrome Support Groups, one in Benalmadena and one in South Wales. Benalmadena Councillor Maria del Carmen Florido attended with other local councillors and sampled some Welsh delights such as Lava bread, Welsh faggots and Welsh cakes. The Spanish guests were interested in the fact that the Welsh had their own language and the Welsh National Anthem was sung for them.

Visit to Gibraltar by top members of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate To celebrate almost two years since the Gibraltar Meeting Centre (GMC) was formally launched ( in June 2010) the Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectors, who comprise the GMC of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate of Great Britain Incorporated (ICWCI), played host to a number of visitors from the UK. The visitors – the President of the ICWCI, James Gallacher MICWCI, the President Elect, David Gray MICWCI, and the Main Management Board Chairman, Charles Lowrie FICWCI – arrived on 25th March and initially met with the local representatives who gave the visitors an insight into the activities of the GMC and also discussed the main issues affecting local construction as seen from the GMC’s perspective. The following day, at a meeting at the John Mackintosh Hall, attended by GMC members and other professional associates, Gibraltar played host to the Minister for Traffic, Health & Safety and Technical
Services, the Honourable Paul Balban MP.
quality. There then followed a short speech by Salvador Sivers, the Training Centre manager, who confirmed the view that raising awareness of health and safety on constructions sites was of great importance.
The Minister addressed the meeting and commenced by congratulating the members on their magnificent work in ensuring that building standards are kept at a high level on construction projects, in both public and private sectors. On behalf of the Government of Gibraltar, he acknowledged that the establishment of the local Meeting Centre has proved a positive step in improving the selection process for ICWCI membership.
particularly when compared to the cost of remedying defects. Mr Gallacher then presented a certificate to Norman Neale, Building Control Inspector with the Department of Planning and Building Control, which confirmed that he had been conferred with Honorary Fellow status of the ICWCI. This was in recognition for Norman’s support to the local Centre’s founder members, in getting the Centre up and running, and also for forming part of the local Professional Interview Panel. Norman later stated, “I am very honoured to have been made an Honorary Fellow of the ICWCI and look forward to continue helping the local committee and Clerks of Works in trying to further their efforts”.
ICWCI’s President, James Gallacher MICWCI, then addressed the gathering. He highlighted the close working relationship with the Gibraltar Government’s Training Centre and the impetus being given to raising health and safety awareness on sites through the use of the CSCS cards. The President went on to explain the primary role of the Clerk of Works & Construction Inspector which is one of quality control and assurance on construction projects. The role, in keeping with the Institute’s motto, “Ability, Integrity & Vigilance”, requires those engaged as Clerks of Works to adhere to the highest standards whilst remaining impartial. The President made the case that the cost of employing a qualified and experienced Clerk of Works is minimal, on any reasonably sized project,
CSC Scheme The Minister also praised the members of the GMC for their efforts in the health and safety field by promoting, together with the Gibraltar Government’s Training Centre, the implementation, in Gibraltar, of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) “passport”. The scheme, which originates in the UK, was set up to help the construction industry reduce accidents and help improve
Medal awarded As a final act, the President then presented the local Meeting Centre’s Past Chairman, Michael Pizzarello, with his Past Chairman’s medal. Michael thanked the President and other visitors for their kind gesture and stated, “Although

Finally, during the last day of the visit the visitors toured the Aquagib desalination plant, installed at Governor’s Cottage, where they were given, by Gary Turnbull, a detailed explanation of the process involved in taking sea water and converting it into perfectly good potable water. From here they then visited the waterworks and water storage reservoirs located within the Rock. There they were treated to a detailed explanation, by Jose Luis Marzan, of the storage and distribution system in place to supply Gibraltar with potable and brackish water. As part of the overall visit there was also the opportunity for the UK visitors together with the local Chairman and Past Chairman, to meet with the Deputy Chief Minister, Dr. Joseph Garcia, at his offices at Nr. 6 Convent Place. In his capacity as Minister for Planning and Building Control the Minister discussed with the ICWCI’s representatives various issues relating to construction projects in Gibraltar. Matters discussed included, quality assurance and reduction of defects, the role of, and the need for, qualified Clerks of Works in both public and private sector developments. The ICWCI’s representatives also raised the matter of the CSCS cards and urged the Minister to consider using this scheme for all site operatives in Gibraltar. This would, apart from raising health & safety awareness, also go
some way in raising construction quality levels as well since it would help in filtering out the “cowboy” worker element.

Clarissa’s fast talking only gets her and Pippa into some hair-raising experiences. However, by the time Henry gets home, the murderer has been unmasked and all is normal, so normal that Henry is utterly unable to believe Clarissa when she explains exactly why there are no refreshments ready for their honoured guest.
Moreover, Henry will shortly be arriving home with a V.I.P in tow who might take a dim view of bodies in the drawingroom.

Darkest Black Comedy Ever MOVIE SPOTLIGHT

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
Battleship veryone has a dark side, Eit escapes and every now and then or we let it out,
Director: Peter Berg Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Rihanna If you like Michael Bay movies and were sad to see that he was not about to release a mindless, noisy great big blockbuster this summer then fret ye not – Peter Berg has stepped into the breach with Battleship. It’s “based” on the Hasbro game Battleship but only loosely – very loosely. Still, if you like your action big and brainless, with bags full of special effects, noise and drama,
and with a lot of fun – even if some of it unintentional – then this is the perfect popcorn movie. Naval ships from around the world are gathering off the coast of Hawaii for their annual at-sea exercises when an alien craft emerges from the sea. Alex Hooper, assigned to the USS John Paul Jones (Kitsch, fresh from his turn as John Carter) is despatched by Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson
appears in the first 10 minutes and then again at the end for no doubt a hefty sum) to find out what’s going on. Well, what’s going on is that aliens have decided to investigate Earth and without bothering to find out what makes us tick move in for the kill. Hooper is slack, lazy and lucky not to be in jail – so it’s no surprise to discover that he becomes the hero

Director: Mike Cahill Starring: Brit Marling, William Mapother
Director: Martin Scorcese Starring: Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Coen, Jude Law
Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling) is a high school student who has been recently accepted to MIT. She celebrates with friends and drives home intoxicated. Listening to a story about an approaching planet that looks just like Earth on the radio, she looks out her car window up to the stars and inadvertly slams into a stopped car at an intersection, putting John
Adapted from Brian Selznick’s illustrated book, the story explores what happens when a young orphan (Asa Butterfield) living in a 1930s Paris train station comes across an older man selling toys at a stall. That man (Ben Kingsley) may literally have the key to the mysterious robotic automaton Hugo’s late father (Jude Law) left behind before perishing in a fire.
Burroughs (William Mapother) in a coma and killing his wife and son. Rhoda is a minor, so her identity is not revealed. After cleaning a school for a while and hearing more news stories about the approaching mirror Earth, Rhoda visits John's house after he has recovered, thinking she will apologise for the harm she did to him. He answers the door and she loses her nerve...
With the constant threat of being taken away to an orphanage by the local police inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen) Hugo finds out more about ‘Papa Georges’ by befriending his granddaughter (Chloe Grace Moretz). Despite Hugo being something of a departure for the director in that it is suitable for family audiences, it is also one of his most personal works.
blow off steam and hide it away again. The 1998 movie “Very Bad Things” was written for your dark side, it is one of the darkest black comedies I have ever seen. It´s so bad it´s brilliant. This film is smart and witty, which is rare for and American movie, and is twisted and hilarious at the same time. he plot starts out simple Twedding – a few days before his (to Cameron Diaz, below), Kyle Fisher and his friends head to Las Vegas for a bachelor party, where the guys end up having the time of their lives in a hotel room, enjoying simultaneous hits, from all the temptations that surround them.
H
owever everything is about to change for the worse, as the call girl who was “entertaining” them accidently gets killed. The guys are thrown into despair and become hysterical. Boyd (Slater) is the only one who is calm, and quickly begins to be assertive, evaluating the situation as ''...a 105 pound problem''. Which means only one option is available – disposal of the body.
T
he base of the whole movie is one accident covered by a lie, but as often with lies, the guilt gets the better of the characters. It´s
like a snowball at the top of a hill, that just roll down and gets bigger and bigger, and takes out everything in its sight. Christian Slater´s character is by far the worst. He is a total sociopath – I´ve never been fond of Slater, but I have to say in this, he stole the movie. s the guilt builds up so A do the bodies, as Boyd, will do anything to protect himself and friends (?) from prison. Daniel Stern has bouts of tortured guilt – the scene in the gas station when his kids demand “Whizzers” is excruciatingly funny and at the same time so poignant that you may experience guilt yourself at finding the mental collapse of the most decent character in the film. his film gives lots of other Tyouvaluable insights – and if only come away from it certain that morality is not a democratic process but a matter of absolute right and wrong, then this movie has done what few achieve; it has educated you morally – following the majority blindly is one of mankind’s greatest follies. he thing to remember Tis when watching this film that it is just a film, otherwise, you´ll find it shocking and offensive. It´s one of those films that you either love or you hate, there is no middle ground – it isn´t fair for people who didn´t get it to say it´s a “bad” film, or that it´s unrealistic, it´s a film – get over yourself. t´s dark, it´s funny, you´ll Iit´slaugh at stuff even though wrong to, but come on, sometimes it´s good to be bad. et´s go and take a walk Land the dark side.

Is your romantic partner confused by you at the moment? Your actions don’t seem to follow recent discussions when you appeared indecisive. Is it that you have now moved on but forgotten to inform your nearest and dearest? Poor them, they probably don’t know if they are coming or going but are secretly glad that you have taken the initiative. Think with an expansive lens and reach down to the very depths of those inner shores.
Bulls don’t usually bite off more than they can chew, this is because they understand waste, however an impulsive streak within you may encourage you to go ‘off the rails’ and take on too much financially - when you really need to plod on with old tried and tested methods. If you are relying on someone else for help you may feel let down, a time to keep your own council and trust your own intuition.
It is time to put the flair back into your work with your innovative ideas and energetic nature. Mercury is at home this month and this force will help you to push your ideas into motion. If favours are owed and you need help then just ask - you have more allies than you think. Delays with transport may cause a snag in your plans. Pay attention to the new connections that are making their way in for they are part of the bigger and better plan Whenever you try to move forward with an idea or attempt to make progress with a business plan there seems to be a hurdle to overcome which can lead to frustration which tries your patience. The only advice I can give you is to not see it as a failure but keep going with what you can despite the blocks. Eventually the blocks will shift and you will be able to proceed a lot faster at that point because you carried on with the groundwork Spending some time concentrating on the things that you enjoy rather than just ‘doing all for others’ will allow you to use your energy in a more constructive manner. There could be increased activity around your home environment that will put you in good spirits. Paying attention to detail is not your forte, but if you do give it a go, it could prevent a great deal of work later. Continue to watch your step while also keeping a strong, energetic eye on the horizon. You can get that point across when you want to Virgo! Well this is one of those times when everyone will understand where you are coming from. You may feel one of your urges to help another - a comforting ear is probably what they require, they may just need to get something off their chest. New friendships will develop for you through activities that include large groups and you will enjoy this social activity immensely.
I bet you could do with a change of scenery to break up the daily monotony. Even if it is only a day away from the routine it will do you the world of good. There could be some tension or delays in either business matters, property or elderly relatives, go with the flow and this could turn out to be of benefit to you in the long run. The September 23rd - less you dance around the issue, even better. Cut to the chase and relief will replace what has been getting the best of you. October 22nd

'Chin jobs' Walk Bowel cancer awareness month head US it off According to the major cancer charities in the UK, the big cosmeticproblem with bowel cancer is a lack of awareness. surgery list
Either people don’t know the symptoms so they miss that vital early diagnosis, or sheer embarrassment stops them from confiding their fears. The result is that almost one in 10 bowel cancer patients die within a month of diagnosis, because their disease is so advanced, according to a new report. That’s an estimated 16,000 people losing their lives to the illness every year when treatment in the vast majority of cases could save them.
This month is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, with charity Beating Bowel Cancer leading the drive to spread information about the disease and its symptoms. It can affect any part of the colon, rectum or anus – the three main parts of the large bowel. It usually starts as slow-growing polyps or ulcers on the inside of the bowel wall, which change over time and, if left untreated, can grow bigger and turn cancerous. Early symptoms are very similar to other, benign

Shocking report on milk quality The Consumers and Users Organisation (OCU) is being sued by the National Federation of Diary Products (Fenil) for publishing a report on the quality of 47 Spanish brands of milk which, Fenil claims, “damages the image and good name of the Spanish dairy industry”. OCU analysed the 47 milk brands and rated them from one to 100. The organisation found that the commonest

The OCU said some companies were also using old milk or using “very aggressive heat treatment” when processing the milk. Some racy dresses appeared at Aintree … but at least they enjoyed themselves The ladies of Liverpool stepped out in their finery for both Liverpool and Ladies Day at Aintree Races. Dresses ranged from ridiculously short baby doll styles to long evening gowns plus pretty much anything else you could possibly think of inbetween. And the men weren’t left out either. Canididate for Mayor of Liverpool Herbert
Howe (right) stepped out in a bright red suit with pink accessories but, what was the thing with the monkey? Ah, well you can certainly say there’s nothing dull about Aintree’s special days! The official dress code for the course on such days is “smart” but the course also states that “fancy dress is not allowed on Grand National Day”.

Basket case? Spotted in the Mercadona Supermarket in Coin, we were wondering if this young lad had found the latest, most planet friendly and chic form of transport possible. What do you think? At least he was happy with his dad trolling him around! Unfortunately though, we didn’t get his name so, does anyone know who he is?
Billie and Laurence name their son Billie Piper gave birth to her second son last week, but until now she's kept schtum about the new arrival's name. However, Billie Piper's husband Laurence Fox has tweeted that their new baby's name is Eugene Pip Fox. The actor tweeted: "new baba is called Eugene Pip Fox. He's a little legend." [sic] It follows a stream of very cute pictures posted by Laurence of little Eugene's tiny feet and hands. The name is a rather unusual choice, but is in keeping with the retro theme the couple went for with first son, three-yearold Winston. Winston was born by C Section after a 26 hour labour, but it's unknown
whether Eugene's arrival was as dramatic. Eugene was born last Friday, with Laurence confirming his arrival on Twitter. He said: "One born every minute. We had our minute today. Couldn't be happier. Beautiful boy. Everything fine." Billie, who kept a lowprofile throughout her

Mike Hamence In the late 1940s on Cambridge’s Newmarket Road near the aerodrome there was a quarry which had become a rubbish tip known as ‘Duce’s Pit’. Hundreds of scrapped cigar shaped overload fuel tanks from WWII American fighter bombers based in Cambridgeshire had been dumped there. We street kids made flimsy catamarans out of the tanks and messed about with them on the River Cam. One day I got in the way of the Cambridge University Eight training on the Cam. The long, sleek boat came slicing round a bend in the river, its oars dipping and rising in smooth, easy unison. Pedalling furiously along the towpath, pacing

Sabinillas the boat on their rickety-rackety push bikes, the Eight’s coaches in their college caps bawled encouragement t h r o u g h cardboard megaphones. I paddled frantically to get out of the way. Too late the coxswain saw me and called, "Easy oars!" but the bow’s oar caught me squarely in the chest. I clutched at it then tumbled backwards into the murky green waters. Moments later I stood sobbing and shivering on the towpath, surrounded by the infuriated coaches and their jumbled bikes.

Apollo 16 40 years ago on April 16th 1972 Apollo 16 blasted off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida headed for the highlands of the Moon. Shaking his megaphone at me one of them bawled, "Keep orf our bloody rivah"! Editor says: Aha! So you’re the one that started all the trouble, are you?! Thanks for letting us know, Mike. Pictured above are Cambridge as they won this year’s boat race after a protesting swimmer stopped the race while Oxford were ahead.
As an example of this disparity an expat pensioner living in Canada will have his pension frozen. If he lived across the

border in USA he would enjoy yearly incremental increases. If people presently living in the UK are planning to spend their pension years with family in foreign lands such as Australia, New Zealand or South Africa for example, they need to be made aware of the discriminatory actions to be taken against them and should be advised to pressure their local MPs to protect the intended benefits of their future pensions.
pensioners, who, like all other British taxpayers contributed to social security, is indefensible and should be challenged as vigorously as possible. Pensions Minister Steve Webb opposed this discrimination while he was in opposition to the Labour Party and should be taken to task for his unacceptable turn-about now that he is empowered to do the honourable thing but is refusing to do so.

he mission was to last for 11 days, three of which would be spent exploring an area of the Moon known as the Descartes Region. Geologists believed that this mountainous region could be volcanic in origin and so would produce rock samples from the interior of the Moon, giving more clues to its formation. Previous Moon landings had always been in slightly ‘safer’ landing areas on the relatively flat Lunar Seas – Apollo 16 would land half way up a 1000-ft mountain.

he crew consisted of Commander John Young an ex US navy captain and a seasoned astronaut on his fourth trip into space – Young would go on to fly the first ever Space Shuttle in 1981; Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke on his first trip into space – Charlie Duke was the famous voice that we had heard as he communicated with Armstrong and Aldrin on Apollo 11; and Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly – Mattingly was the lucky-unlucky astronaut who had been unable to fly on Apollo 13 when he was exposed to measles and had to be replaced by Jack Swigert three days before the launch. If you saw the Tom Hanks movie about Apollo 13 Ken Mattingly was the disgruntled astronaut played by Gary Sinise.
W
hen the astronauts had first arrived in orbit around the Moon, the Lunar Module landing craft (Orion) had been mated to the nose cone of the Command Module (Casper). Young and Duke climbed into Orion leaving Mattingly alone in Casper. The two vehicles separated and Orion began its descent toward the Moon. Firing the main engine on the Lunar Module slows it down and begins the descent; this reduction in speed causes it to begin ‘falling’ toward the Moon feet first with the astronauts looking up into the lunar sky. At 7,000ft above the lunar surface the Lunar Module is brought up to a standing orientation so that the astronauts can finally look out of the front windows and see the landing site. The main engine is once again ignited and the astronauts pilot the Lunar Module gently onto the lunar surface.
O
nce on the lunar surface, Young and Duke had some housekeeping to perform, eat a meal and then prepare to sleep, it would not be until the next ‘day’ that they could eventually step out onto the surface and begin exploring. As this
was to be the penultimate flight to the Moon NASA were keen to fill as much time as possible with scientific experiments and Young and Duke had a very full schedule of tasks to perform. In all they made three separate Moonwalks lasting almost 25 hours. You must remember it took them nearly two hours each time to fit into their spacesuits and another two hours to remove them at the end of each Moonwalk – overtime rates are not paid at time and a half in space!
Y
oung and Duke would have the benefit of the second Lunar Rover Vehicle to help them explore the Moon eventually covering over 16 miles in total. The Lunar Rover was a batterypowered car that had first been used by Apollo 15, it could not only carry the astronauts but also the bulky equipment needed for their explorations. A remotely controlled camera fitted to the front of the rover and operated from Earth helped Mission Control to oversee the work of the astronauts and also seek out any interesting objects they may have overlooked.
A
t the end of their third Moonwalk, Young drove the Lunar Rover about 90 metres from the Lunar Module so that the onboard camera could film the lift-off. After a successful launch they were able to dock with Mattingly in the orbiting Command Module and transfer their haul of 200lbs of Moon rock into the Command Module and head for home.
A
pollo 16 finally splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on April 27th 1972, 290 hours after leaving Earth. The US aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga was there to recover the astronauts and the Command Module from the ocean.

V.I.P. BMW’s for Olympics This is the first picture of one of the high-performance cars – many of which cost more than £40,000 – that will whisk Olympic chiefs along London’s VIP-only routes during this summer’s Games. That is really special for me,” Rosberg reflected. “Thanks to everybody in the team, here in China and in our factories in Brackley and Brixworth.
victory. The success came in his 111th grand prix, and 30 years after father Keke took his maiden win, in the Swiss Grand Prix at DijonPrenois, but Mercedes had had to wait longer, some 57 years, to celebrate a grand prix victory. In a nice piece of symmetry, it was also 111 years since the ThreePointed Star's first win, taken at the 1901 Nice Speed Weeks. Nico Rosberg had this to say: “This is a very special moment for me. Last Saturday was certainly a day for driving in the comfort of the grand tourers, with lowering clouds and high winds, though some intrepid members of SOL Classic Car Club arrived at the start of the April run in an open sports car. The route this time took them through Monda, up to Casarabonela for a coffee stop and then on to the lakes where an open-air lunch had been planned on the water's edge. The rain was kind enough to hold off while the food was being cooked although there were some hairy moments when the strong winds sent
The Easter bonnets were out in force and the weather was just glorious at the Easter bonnet fun day and lunch at Mijas Bowls Club. The games were Cocks verses Chicks ending with the Cock’s just winning. A wonderful lunch was prepared by Carol with the help of Gladys and was much appreciated by all. Later in the day a quiz was held resulting in lots of merriment, prizes were then given out to the winners. The social events at Mijas seem to be getting better and better. Played with great intensity from the outset, with some powerful tackling, some ferocious forward play and some skillful handling in the back line, the 200-strong crowd enjoyed a great game of rugby. It was the inaugural T-20 match on the new pitch at the Cartama oval on Saturday when a UK touring side took on a local XI comprised of members from all the local teams. Rain had been threatening the game all day but only managed to drizzle a little and by no means bothered the players who were eager to take to the field. The local side won the toss and elected to bat with Dave and Phill opening and both cruising to 30 runs before falling LBW and clean bowled respectively. Morly then stepped up making 28 and the captain Previn making 37 before retiring. Tom

PFA boss Taylor demands zero tolerance Players' union chief Gordon Taylor yesterday demanded a zero-tolerance policy on diving and called for video technology to be used to catch offenders. Taylor's comments followed the second penalty controversy in the space of a week involving Manchester United forward Ashley Young, who was criticised for what even Sir Alex Ferguson described as a 'dramatic fall' in Sunday's 4-0 win over Aston Villa.

Sociedad keeper made saves from Rondon twice, the second one an outstanding save from a Rondon volley. At the end Demichellis had the ball in the back of the net only to be ruled offside, which following replays proved to be the wrong decision. So in the end a disappointing two points dropped but Malaga remain 4th, as results in other games went their way. Some good news though Brazilian striker Julio Baptista is scheduled to return to Malaga this week after the hamstring injury that has kept him out of the game for several months, and spending more than a month of rehabilitation at home, sources at the club reported on Monday. Baptista was operated on on the 7th December by Dr. Petr Spurek in a hospital in Marbella. By Scott Forbes Golf and Country Club. The 29-year-old posted a final-round four-under 68, after finishing his rainaffected third round with a 69. Oosthuizen had been struggling with the jetlag of travelling across 12 time zones from Augusta to Malaysia to make the event, but surprised himself with the speed of his recovery.

Trainer want’s bigger fences at the Grand National Trainer Malcolm Jefferson believes bigger fences at the Grand National could have saved his horse According to Pete, who died after Saturday's race. Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Synchronised also had to be put down. The deaths have led to calls for more modifications to the Aintree course. But Jefferson said: "They can't carry on making changes. In my eyes the fences should be bigger to slow them down. If they were a foot higher Pete would still have jumped them." An extensive review was carried out following the race 12 months ago when two horses also died. Changes were made to the course, including reducing the drop on the landing side of Becher's Brook, where
According to Pete fell. He was put down after suffering a fractured leg. Jefferson added: "Now they are trying to please everybody and you can't. People say make the field smaller, but what if next year another two die? Then they'll want 20 runners. "Watering to ensure softer ground might help. There was a lot of carry-on after last year's race and I just wish they'd stop trying to please everyone because you can't. "It was just a freak accident. He was loving it, jumping for fun. If he'd just been brought down and got back up again we'd be taking him back next year, but he broke his shoulder unfortunately. You can't do anything about it, it could have happened anywhere, but because it was the National everyone saw it.
