NATIONAL NEWS - FEARS THAT ROYAL HOUSEHOLD’ S IMAGE MAY BE TARNISHED
King’s son-in-law seeks “no jail” deal Iñaki Urdangarin and his former partner, Diego Torres, are said to be trying to do a deal in order to avoid going to prison. This would mean pleading guilty to the various charges of embezzlement and tax evasion against them and returning the money their Noos Institute received from the Balearic and Valencia regional governments to arrange sports conferences, some of which never took place. It would also involve paying some €3.5 million in taxes which the Tax Office claims is owed by Urdangarin. The King’s son-in-law is said to have taken the initiative after Torres sent a copy of an email to the court in Palma two weeks ago in which Urdangarin told his former partner that he had had a message from the King, via his wife, the Infanta
Cristina, that he (the King) would call the then regional premier of Valencia, Francisco Camps, to ask him to look into the matter. Urdangarin seems to imply that the King was willing to get actively involved to get his son-inlaw off the hook, something he had previously denied. He had also insisted that his wife knew nothing about the activities of the Noos Institute, even though she was a member of its board of directors. People close to Urdangarin fear that Torres may have more emails or documents up his sleeve which could tarnish the

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Surprises
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
What a lovely surprise I had on Sunday evening. My husband had told me that he was taking me out somewhere but I had no idea where. nor did I want to know. Good surprises are lovely and I remember years ago finding my Christmas presents before the day and being so disappointed it wasn’t true. It wasn’t that the presents were no good, it was that I’d totally spoilt the day for myself by searching for them and finding them, unwrapped, under the bed - I have never done it since! Anyway, back to Sunday. I was told to drive to Fuengirola and park on the seafront, then we wound our way through the streets ending up at the Salon Varietes. A quick drink before the performance began and we were delighted with Tres divos performing their “Musical Heroes” show singing songs made famous by the likes of Andy Williams, Bing Crosby, dean Martin and Matt Monroe. What a great surprise of an evening and I’d like to see their purely Il divo show at some time. Well done Geoff for surprising me with this. The weather up here in Coin has turned decidedly wintery over the last week with monsoon type rain storms, thunder, lightening and even snow on the mountains behind us (have a look at the photo on the Community news pages) so it was away with the T shirts that had just begun to see the light of day and back on with jumpers, jeans and boots. Brrrrr!

e whole world marches on May Day Thousands of people took to the streets in cities and towns across Spain on Tuesday to protest against the government’s austerity measures, especially the labour reforms and cuts in health and education spending. The weather smiled on them this time. Rain on Sunday put a damper on marches the unions had organised in at least 50 cities and towns, less than 10,000 turning out in Madrid. International Workers' May 1st Day, as the holiday is known officially, is meant to be a celebration of working people worldwide But there was little cause for celebration this year as the world turned out to protest against austerity measures and the worsening economic situation. presidential election runoff this coming Sunday dominated the annual march. Nicolas Sarkozy held a rally with the theme of "real work", while the unions marched to the Bastille and National Front leader Marine Le Pen led a march through Paris to the statue of Joan of Arc, an iconic figure for the far right. Protesters took part in a day of strikes and demonstrations across Greece ahead of next Sunday’s general election, when many Greeks are expected to vent their anger against the austerity measures. In Russia, nationalists, communists and opponents of incoming president Vladimir Putin all held separate rallies in the former communist state. Reforms “every Friday” Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy stood defiantly by the reforms his government has made so far, even as tens of thousands of people across Spain took to the streets on Sunday to protest against his austerity measures. Addressing the Partido Popular party’s Madrid regional congress, Rajoy told delegates: “There will be reforms announced this Friday, and every Friday after that, and they will be major reforms.” He said he “understood perfectly that a lot of people cannot understand the decisions that I am taking at the moment”, but insisted that a drastic economic situation called for drastic action.

Speaking almost simultaneously at a demonstration in Madrid, Cayo Lara, the general coordinator of and MP for the United Left party, accused the government of using the economic crisis as an excuse to sell off essential public services to the private sector.
Party leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba speaking at a rally of his party’s youth wing in Madrid, accused Rajoy of pushing ahead spending cuts “for ideological reasons”. He described the Prime Minister as “the last of the Mohicans,” and said his “blind implementation of austerity policies”were pushing Spain’s economy further into depression.

New offer for Unemployment VAT to go up ETA prisoners hits record high in 2013 Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz has announced that the government is willing to introduce a new programme to help ETA prisoners reintegrate into society on the condition that they publicly renounce violence and disassociate themselves from the Basque terrorist organisation. The new programme would make it easier for ETA prisoners to seek transfers to jails in the Basque County to be closer to their families and for those who qualify to apply for early release under good-conduct time credit. They will not have to apologise to their victims, as was the case under the previous Socialist government’s policy, in order to qualify for the benefits. The Association of Victims of Terrorism (AVT) criticised the government’s move, calling the programme “a betrayal of the memory of the victims.”
Interior Minister Jorge Fernández
A group of international mediators, led by South African lawyer Brian Currin, has repeatedly asked the Spanish and French governments to be more lenient toward ETA prisoners which they say would facilitate a permanent ceasefire by ETA. But Prime Minister Rajoy reiterated the government’s firm stance: “There is nothing to negotiate with ETA, and we are not going to do it. ETA must disband, and nothing else.” ETA announced a “definitive” end to terrorist violence last September.
Unemployment hit a new record high last week when official figures showed that the number of people without a job reached 5,639,500 at the end of March, with the unemployment rate hitting 24.4%.
sharply since April 2007, when it stood at 7.9%. Other figures released on Friday showed that Spanish retail sales were down 3.7% in March from the same point a year ago – the 21st month in a row sales have fallen.
The country has the highest unemployment rate in the European Union and it is expected to rise further to hit the six million mark by the end of the year, according to some forecasts. The rate has risen
The government has announced reforms to the labour market, including cutting back on severance pay and restricting inflation-linked salary increases, that it hopes will ease the problem.
Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said last Friday that the government hopes to raise some €8 billion next year by raising “indirect taxes,” including the valueadded tax (VAT), to help meet the country’s goal of bringing down the budget deficit from 8.5 percent of GDP to three percent in two years. De Guindos told a press conference after the weekly Cabinet meeting that the measures are part of a complete “tax restructuring”
aimed mostly at consumers. Taxes will also be raised on alcohol, tobacco and gasoline. The Partido Popular has always opposed raising VAT in the past and was highly critical of the Socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero for raising VAT from 16 per cent to 18 per cent in July 2010. However, De Guindos said that families should be in a better position to spend more next year but admitted that consumer spending will remain low.
Spanish teens lead on cannabis The latest survey by the World Health Organisation (WHO) has revealed that Spanish and Canadian teenagers lead the developed countries when it comes to cannabis consumption. The survey, which is carried out every four years in more than 40 countries, most of them in Europe, includes the results of more than 200,000
questionnaires answered by students aged 11, 13 and 15 between 2009 and 2010. Some 16 per cent of Spanish teens admitted to smoking cannabis in the last 30 days before being questioned, second to the Canadians, where 18 per cent said they had. On the other hand, the numbers fell to 9 per cent in the UK,
5.5 per cent in Portugal and 4 per cent in Germany. Only 2.5 per cent of 15 year olds in Norway had smoked cannabis in the same period, and 5.5 percent said they had never tried it. Spanish teens lagged behind in alcohol consumption, with 22.5 per cent of 15 year olds
admitting to drinking at least once a week. But this was well behind their counterparts in Greece (38.5 per cent), Ukraine (37 per cent), Croatia (35 per cent) and Austria or Italy (32.5 per cent). By the age of 15, 19 per cent of Spanish teens said they smoked at least once a week. However, Greenland led with 57 per cent.
Survivor recalls Guernica bombing Around 4.30 pm on April 26th, 1937, as the weekly market in Guernica was winding down, a joint squadron of 23 German and Italian planes came zooming out of the blue and proceeded to bomb the historic – and undefended – Basque town for some five hours, dropping a total of 22 tons of high explosives and incendiary devices that would burn for days, destroying 70 per cent of the town, and killing and wounding 1,600 people, about a third of the population. It became the most well known atrocity of the Spanish Civil War. Threequarters of a century later, the only survivors of the attack were children at the time, and they have carried the horror of what happened with them all their lives. In a commemorative article in El Pais newspaper, Andone Bidagueren, who was aged eight at the time, said: "I still get very emotional when I think about that afternoon, I can't
help it." Andone said her mother rose early that day, heading into town to sell milk. She returned home around 4 pm, and Andone was helping her with the empty milk churns, when they heard the sirens. Her story was one of several recalled in the El Pais article. Andone stayed in the town after the bombing, meeting her future husband, the son of a baker, the next day. But
many other residents fled to France, among them Javier Alberdi, aged nine, and Luis Iriondo, aged 14. They returned a year later after Franco's forces had occupied Guernica, and along with around 200 or so other survivors, have remained there ever since. Others such as Francisco García San Román, aged seven, and his two brothers,
moved to another town and never returned to Guernica – until last week when they attended the commemorations of the bombing. It was largely thanks to Picasso’s haunting painting that Guernica has been a powerful symbol of the atrocity of war. He painted it in a matter of weeks and it was first shown at the Paris
exhibition that same summer. The painting was shown widely in Europe and the United States over the next few years and ended up in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. In 1968, Franco expressed an interest in having Guernica returned to Spain but Picasso refused to allow this until the Spanish people again enjoyed a
republic. Picasso died in 1973, two years before Franco. Even after the transition to democracy the MoMA was reluctant to give up one of its greatest treasures, arguing that a monarchy did not represent the republic that Picasso had made a condition for the painting's return. Under great international pressure, the MoMA finally ceded the painting to Spain in 1981.

Clinics suspend free abortions Two clinics in Aragon have announced they will stop providing free abortions as of May 3rd because the regional government owes them more than €800,000 to provide the service. As of that date, a spokesman said, women will have to pay €300 until the regional government comes to some arrangement to clear the debt. The two clinics, which are the only ones to provide the service subsidised by the regional government, carry out more than 2,000 abortions a year. A regional government spokesman said the clinics
had rejected an offer to pay €250,000 now, another €150,000 within ten days and the rest at the end of the year. He advised women to pay for the abortions then reclaim the money from the regional government until the matter is settled. Aragon is not the only regional government to owe money for abortions
Recession confirmed The Spanish economy is officially in recession, according to the latest figures from the National Statistics Institute which show that it shrank 0.3% over the three months to the end of March – the second consecutive quarterly contraction. Clive Palmer, one of australia's richest men, has commissioned a Chinese state-owned company to build a 21st century version of the Titanic, with construction to start at the end of next year. The mining billionaire told australian media that the new vessel is scheduled to sail from London to new York in late 2016, if all goes as planned. The plan, he added, is for the vessel to be as similar as possible to the original Titanic in design and specifications, but with modern technology. Saudi arabia

Cuban 'defector' actors reappear
More than 100 die in Indian ferry sinking Divers and rescue workers continue to search for survivors on the Brahmaputra river in India's Assam state, where a ferry capsized during a storm on Monday, killing at least 103 people. Police said about 100 people have been rescued.
Some 40 bodies have already been recovered from the river and the death toll is likely to rise, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said. “Lax safety standards mean ferry accidents are common on the river, but this is one of the worst disasters.”
Anailin de la Rua and Javier Nunez Florian
A passenger told local TV channels that about 200 people were travelling in the boat along with cargo. He said he was riding on the roof along with 150 other people when a storm
hit the boat, throwing off many of those on the roof. A police officer told reporters the ferry carried no lifeboats or life jackets, and was overloaded with people and goods.
Two 20-year-old Cuban actors who star in the film una noche (One night), which depicts three Cuban teenagers trying to escape the poverty of their homeland to begin a new life in Miami, have themselves defected. Javier nunez Florian and anailin de la rua emerged from hiding a week after they had gone missing at Miami airport during a stop-over on the way to a film festival in new York. They told a Spanish-language TV channel they would seek political asylum in the uS.

One World Trade Centre NY's tallest One World Trade Centre became New York's tallest building, overtaking the Empire State Building, after a steel girder was lifted into place on the 100th floor of the skyscraper on Monday, making the structure at the site of the 9/11 attacks 1,271ft high. The construction
building, of which
began in April 2006, will be 1,776ft tall when completed. Dubbed Freedom Tower, it became the tallest building in the city a day before the one-year anniversary of the operation that killed Osama Bin Laden. In its shadow is the 9/11 memorial, made up of two reflecting pools in the
footprints of where the twin towers used to stand. On Monday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement: "The New York City skyline is, once again, stretching to new heights." Although One World Trade Centre is set to claim the title of the tallest building in the US, Dubai's Bhurj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world.
Sarkozy to sue over Gaddafi claim French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to file a complaint against the Mediapart website for publishing a 2006 document signed by former head of Libyan intelligence Moussa Koussa proposing up to €50m in funding for his 2007 election campaign. Mr Sarkozy called it a "crude forgery" and Mr
Koussa said it was a fake. The allegation first surfaced in March 2011 when the late Libyan leader's son, Saif al-Islam, said he was ready to reveal all the details. At the time, France was spearheading Nato-led efforts to impose a no-fly zone aimed at halting the advance of pro-Gaddafi forces against Libyan
rebels. But this is the first document linked to the allegation, supposedly signed by Mr Koussa and addressed to the head of Col Gaddafi's then chief of staff, Bashir Saleh, who ran Libya's sovereign wealth fund. Mr Saleh’s lawyer said in a statement that the "politically intentioned" allegations were "completely unfounded".

Good parenting Hacking scandal report given to Government Parents are being given booklets with guidelines on how to how to be a good parent.
Among the suggestions are reading to your child for 15 minutes per day, talking to them with the TV off and praising them when they do well.
The advice leaflets also give guidelines on nutrition for the child after a recent survey found that 25% of babies between the ages of 6 months and two years are iron deficient because parents simply don’t know how to feed them properly.

Rupert Murdoch is “not a fit person” to run an international company because he showed “wilful blindness” to the extent of phone-hacking at the News of the World, a devastating report by MPs has concluded. The Media Committee have at last ruled on whether Parliament had been misled over the ongoing phone hacking scandal at the News of the World and how it was handled by the paper’s senior executives. The publication of the 121 page report comes after Rupert and James Murdoch had both appeared again before the enquiry to face further questions earlier this week and just 24 hours after David Cameron was summoned to the Commons to account for the lack of an investigation into the row over Jeremy

Hunt and the BSkyB takeover attempt. The report said that the culture of cover-up “permeated from the top throughout the organisation and speaks volumes about the lack of corporate governance at News Corporation and News International”. The report further found that top executives lied to the committee showing “blatant contempt” by seeking to mislead it. However, the full blame was not put with the News corporation. Keir Starmer, the director of public prosecutions, and John Yates, the former acting deputy commissioner of Scotland Yard, were both said to “bear culpability” for “failing to ensure” that evidence held by the Yard was properly investigated in the years following the 2007 conviction of Clive Goodman, the former NoW royal editor, and private detective Glenn Mulcaire, for voicemail interception. And Surrey Police, were criticised for having “sat on” the knowledge that the News of the World had hacked the voicemails of the murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler for 10 years, and doing nothing about it. Of Rupert Murdoch the report says: “On the basis of the facts and the evidence before the committee, we
conclude that, if at all relevant times Rupert Murdoch did not take steps to become fully informed about phone-hacking, he turned a blind eye and exhibited wilful blindness to what was going on in his and companies publications. “This culture, we consider, permeated from the top throughout the organisation and speaks volumes about the lack of effective corporate governance at News Corporation and News International. We conclude, therefore, that Rupert Murdoch is not a fit person to exercise the stewardship of a major international company.” Rupert Murdoch said that his appearance in Parliament was his most humbling of his life adding that there had been a “cover up” at his former paper. Once the report had been presented to Parliament on Tuesday the Government has six days to respond. Hacking victim Anne Diamond appearing on Sky News said she feared that it would be lot of “verbal diarrhoea”, followed by a lot of hot air, followed by nothing actually being done.

The government admitted legal costs trying to depart Abu Qatada to Jordan has reached £825,000 since 2002 according Immigration Secretary Damian Green, and is set to continue to rise. No figures have been released for how much Qatada has received in legal aid during that time although the Legal Services Commission confirmed that the 51-year-old, described by a judge as Osama Bin Laden’s right hand man, has received legal aid from public funds over the same period to fund his appeals against deportation. Qatada was arrested by officers from the UK Border Agency on the morning of Tuesday, April 17th, just
hours after the Home Office announced that time was up for any appeal. However, Qatadas lawyers launched an appeal at 11pm local time on the same day claiming that Home Secretary Theresa May had miscalculated the timings and the deadline was actually midnight on the 17th. A panel of judges is now given the task of deciding who is right and if the Home Secretary is found to be correct, the judges will have no discretion in allowing the appeal to be considered by the Strasbourg-based court’s Grand Chamber and the appeal will have automatically failed.

Miserly banks 70 firms a day in the uK are folding with shop after shop having to go out of business. Proprietors are still blaming the banks and their lack of lending at reasonable rates to keep small companies going and not lending to new small business, despite the banks assurances that they are lending to 80% of companies that ask them – although they don’t say at what cost they are lending. The small firms are claiming that if the banks do lend, it is at such a high rate of interest that it is impossible for them to stay afloat anyway.

Walsh speaks up Ministers were today told to use the “billions of pounds” they raise from air passenger duty to pay for extra border guards. British airways supremo Willie Walsh said that taxpayer cash should be used to ease the crisis at passport control. He said the charge, which is up to £92 per person for long-haul flights, could be diverted to pay for staff checking passengers’ passports. He added: “anybody who has gone through an airport in recent times has experienced the unacceptably poor standards that the border force has provided. The government has tried to convince people that we don’t have a crisis; the government is misleading people, we have a crisis, it has been there for some time and we need urgent action.”

More than 20mm of rain fell over 12 hours in the UK on Monday night giving rise to the Environment Agency issuing over 40 flood warnings including red warnings with particular focus on Somerset, Dorset and Devon. The national forecaster said that 32mm (1.3in) of rain had fallen over Exmoor in the hours between Monday and Tuesday mornings and in the 12 hours leading to 4am on Tuesday more than 20mm (0.8in) had fallen in South Wales and 16.4mm (0.7in) had hit Bournemouth Airport.
Yellow warnings were given to the South and East of England, Southern Wales, London and the Midlands where there will also be strong north easterly winds adding to the misery. The only region with no flood warnings was the North West of the country. The Agency added that they are busy clearing any potential blockages to reduce the risk of flooding due to water being unable to drain away. A man and his dog drowned when their car tried to cross a flooded ford
in Hampshire on Monday and around 1,000 people were evacuated from a caravan site in Northamptonshire as water rose. Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire (pictured above) has once again been affected with people not going to work as they can’t get through the flood water and school exams having to be cancelled. Last month, April, was the wettest since records began but – bizarrly – there are still hosepipe bans in some areas of the country
Be a good teacher, get more pay Teachers’ pay could be linked to their performance and there is a call from the Commons Education Select Committee for sixth form pupils and undergraduates, on occasion, being allowed to take over lessons that will be known as “teacher taster classes” to encourage them to become teachers after
they finish university. Also called for was for trainee teachers to be observed in the classroom before being offered a permanent place in the profession thus retaining only the best teachers. Evidence has shown that the best teachers with the best rapport with pupils boost grades and make a significant difference to the student’s future earnings. The committee went on to say that the Government should consider a formal “internship” system for teaching graduates along the lines of that used in Singapore, adding that “we believe this
approach could help both deter some people who are not best suited to the profession and persuade others to consider it” – having found whether or not the job is for them before embarking on lengthy and expensive further education in the subject. The MPs backed plans to toughen up literacy and numeracy tests taken by trainee teachers and Brian Lightman, secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, welcomed the report which highlights the difference that good teachers can make to the lives of their pupils saying: “the select Committee has made a valuable contribution to future policy development.”

Visitors stay with Driver jailed in family or friends Finnish bus tragedy
The driver of the SUV that collided with a bus carrying Finnish tourists to the airport on April 19th, 2008, has been sentenced to three-and-a half years in jail.
Official figures show that while domestic tourism increased by nearly five per cent in the first three months of this year, most of the visitors opted for staying with family or friends rather than in hotels. They also opted to stay nearer their home bases which enabled them to travel by car rather than plane. While the response to the sector’s campaign to encourage Spaniards to

The man, identified only as J.G.R., was driving at 152 kph when he tried to overtake the bus on the A7. He had been drinking and the road was wet. He lost control of his vehicle and hit the lane divider before careening back and hitting the back left hand side of the bus which was carrying 50 tourists to the airport. Nine people were killed and 26 were injured – including the SUV driver’s
passenger – when the bus overturned and crashed into a barrier. Aged 26 at the timeof the accident, the man was denied bail because the judge decided that his job as a lorry driver would enable him to flee. The Malaga Provincial Court later released him on bail of €18,000.
The Finnish government created a crisis cabinet to repatriate the victims’ remains, and sent two policemen, five psychologists and a priest to Malaga to help the survivors and the members of their families who accompanied them in hospital here until they were well enough to travel home.

Waiting for Connery A Malaga court has been waiting for 18 months for Scottish actor Sean Connery and his wife Micheline to answer questions about an alleged money laundering operation related to the sale of a villa the couple owned in Marbella. The beach front property was demolished to make way for 72 luxury apartments. Meanwhile the second judge in charge of the case has been transferred to a new post and a temporary judge is in charge of the case. The investigation into the luxury apartments began in 2007 as an offshoot of the urban planning scandals involving Marbella’s former urban planning adviser, Juan Antonio Roca.
property sale. The case then received the moniker of ‘Goldfinger’ in recognition of Connery’s most famous screen role as James Bond. By then the couple were living in the Bahamas, and Connery claimed his poor health made it impossible
for him to travel to Spain to answer questions. It was eventually agreed that the Malaga court would send a team of lawyers to question him in the Bahamas but so far this interview has not taken place, for reasons which remain unclear.

eSTePona Malaga is third from the bottom when it comes to recycling paper and cardboard, according to the Paper and Cardboard Association (Aspapel), which recently released figures for 2010 for recycling in cities across Spain with more than 500,000 inhabitants. Only 8,600 tons of paper and cardboard were recycled in Malaga, compared to 83,000 tons in Madrid, 65,200 in Barcelona, 19,300 in Zaragoza, 18,200 in Sevilla and 18,000 in Valencia. The figures show that some municipalities recycled more paper than Malaga. In Andalucia, only the inhabitants of Jaen and Almeria recycled less than Malaga’s average of 15.3 kilos per capita. Granada led the field with 33 kilos per inhabitant, followed by Córdoba (30.9 kilos); Cádiz (25.2 kilos) and Seville, (18.2 kilos). The national average is 30 kilos.
Motorcyclist campaign traps 17 During a recent week-long campaign focusing on the proper use of motor bikes, the local Police carried out 149 spot checks at 10 mobile control points in the town and ended up fining 17 bike owners, half of them for not wearing their helmets. Five were not insured and three lacked the necessary documentation such as the ITV and a document showing the machine had passed the allowed noise level test. a spokesman said the aim was to raise the bikers’ safety awareness.

Late rains not enough The weekend’s rains left 40 litres per square metre in some parts of the province, raising the levels of the reservoirs in the axarquia and Marbella but still short of where they should be. The weathermen forecast more rain in early May but it will not make up for what has been a very dry winter and spring. Temperatures are also expected to start climbing to reach a seasonal norm after an unusually late cold snap over the weekend. Malaga
More old cars on the roads More people in the provincial capital are hanging on to their old cars, according to Traffic authority figures which show that 10,121 were turned in last year as opposed to 15,259 in 2007 when the crisis began. The tendency increased after the government’s last Plan Renove offering incentives to get old vehicles off the road ended in 2009. a spokesman for the Malaga automobile associations said a tax incentive for new cars would cost the government nothing while halting the steady decline in car sales.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
Going too fast
S
omeone asked me the other day how I saw the Rajoy government shaping up and I replied that when he stops throwing all these reforms at me I might have time to think about them and arrive at a conclusion. But no such hope, I’m afraid – last Sunday at a meeting of the party faithful Rajoy told the people who were out on the street at that moment protesting the labour reforms and education and health cuts that whether they like it or not, “every Friday there will be reforms”. So it looks as if he intends to keep our heads spinning.
I
f the Socialists had been re-elected last November, they would have had to do more or less what Rajoy is doing now, except that they would have made more of an effort to sweeten the bitter pill – probably by going more slowly, which was the mistake they made when they finally started to take the bull by the horns just under two years ago.
Come together, right now, hopefully very precious to them.
B
y the time I have to hand this column in – Tuesday pm – I might know just how many people will have answered the unions’ call to join the May Day protests planned all over Spain. If Sunday’s “rehearsal” was anything to go by, it won’t be the huge crowds they’re hoping for. Admittedly the weather was bad over what was a long weekend anyway. The forecast for Tuesday is sunny in a large part of the country but a lot of people will be heading home that day after the long weekend break. It sounds like I’m making excuses for the poor turnout but in fact like many other political observers I’m trying to work out just how Spaniards feel about the current economic situation and to do that many factors – such as how many of them turn out to protest – have to be taken into account. In fact, a quick look at the national headlines indicates that the turnout was better than Sunday, especially in Barcelona where the regional government has made cuts even more savage than Rajoy’s.
T I
n fact the problem isn’t so much the deficit but the fact that Spain’s banks are owed so much money by people who simply cannot pay it back. At the height of the construction boom the banks were handing out mortgages as if there were no tomorrow and obviously a lot of people were only too happy to seize the opportunity to possess their own homes. Now many of those homes have been repossessed and the banks are selling them off at discounts of up to 60 per cent in an effort to get some of their money back. The good news is that the banks are now coming round to the idea of allowing people to give back their homes to pay off the mortgage but letting them rent it instead in the hope that if and when the economy picks up, they’ll be able to re-buy it. This is good for the banks because they’ll be getting some of the money back, and good for the people, who won’t have to give up something
hat said, there is still a strong feeling in the air that the unions are desperately trying to make up for seven years of inaction under a Socialist government and that people quite rightly view this with a certain amount of cynicism. We now know more about all the handouts they got under Zapatero as well as the fact that they own hundreds of companies that did very well indeed because of their links to local and regional governments run by the Socialist Party. I use the past tense because Rajoy has already cut union subsidies and a lot of those local and regional governments fell to the Partido Popular in last May’s regional and local elections, who will no doubt be favouring their own people.
B
etter late than never. The leaders of Europe are finally going to come together and discuss ways of fostering growth across the continent. European Council president Herman Van Rompuy last week called together the heads of government for an extraordinary summit late in June to see what direction the nations want to take to stimulate their economies and, yes, with Germany at the helm. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has finally decided that this crisis is not all about austerity. For months, Mrs Merkel has been putting us through the grind, demanding that we tighten our belts but without offering us any opportunities to help us get back on our own two feet. But don’t you believe that the German leader is finally caving in because of humanitarian reasons. For months she has overlooked the pleas from other leaders such as Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, who has repeatedly told her that Europe cannot go on like this, and has ignored the sad but drastic tactics of many citizens of EU member states who have resorted to suicide because they could no longer handle their dire financial affairs. No, Mrs Merkel for the first time since this crisis has begun finds her horizon getting a bit slanted. Her partner in crime in this European shakedown, the French president Nicolas Sarkozy, stands to lose the election this coming Sunday to the Socialist, François Hollande. There is no doubt that Hollande wants to look at another direction, one that calls for an improvement in people’s lives across Europe and – here comes the shocker – with the help of Brussels.
U
nions are necessary to protect workers’ rights and improve working conditions but they can get too complacent – and corrupt – when “their” party is in power. I dread to think just how corrupt the unions are in Andalucia, where their political masters have been in power for 30 years. But corruption in Andalucia in general doesn’t bear thinking about.
S
o we’ll wait and watch and hope that what my fellow columnist Martin Delfin says in his column this week comes to pass.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti
A
ccording to a document that was perused by Claudi Pérez of El País, the European summit at the end of June will concentrate on looking at giving money to countries that have been sorely affected by this crisis. Work projects and small business stimuli are part of the Brussels’ proposal to help us find our way
out of this hole. It is being billed as a new “Marshall Plan” to resurrect Europe. The European Investment Bank will play a key role in financing public works projects for all the nations in the euro zone, with the key to building new jobs through issuing euro bonds and other financial vehicles. It is believed that countries will be able to tap into a special fund but will have to share the cost of paying back the money that has been spent. For months, Mrs Merkel has insisted that nations take their own poison by cutting costs at the expense of their own citizens but this formula has only brought rebellion across Europe. The conservative government in the Netherlands has folded, Romania, although not part of the euro zone, has seen its own government gone astray last week, and the French are soon to send Sarkozy to his own Saint Helena.
Angela Merkel
I
t was about time that Merkel moved. It is also time for Germany to take a bigger role to ensure the safety of the euro zone by investing in and purchasing more imports from its beleaguered partners. Before last November’s election, the Socialist leader, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba had been calling on the EIB to let loose its cash to stimulate our economies, but his petition has fallen on deaf ears. Earlier this year, Rubalcaba met Hollande in Paris and asked him to push for a European bank fund to help fire up the staggering economies. It seems that the Spanish Socialist wasn’t the only one who demanded this.
H
ollande on the continental scene will open a new outlook on the crisis. We are finally getting someone – we hope – who will stand up for us, the people hit hard by this crisis and the victims of those who refuse to budge because they personally do not want to see any turbulences in their own high-earning lifestyles. Now let’s hope our European leaders can agree on this one proposal.

e News Help Desk Got a problem? Think there’s no way out?
Don’t go to someone who’s going to charge you a fortune for something that can so easily be fixed.
The News Help Desk has been set up with the backing of this newspaper and may well be able to sort it out for you at a far lesser cost.
Ours is a service where you can come for advice on how to deal with any problems you may have in connection with living in Spain, including legalising of houses, businesses, cars, etc. And if there’s something we can’t help you with, we will know someone who can, and do it legally too! Everything you tell us, of course, is in the strictest of confidence.
The News Help Desk is open every week by appointment at The News offices on Sierra Chica, opposite the La Trocha Commercial Centre, Coin (above De Cotta Law). We are on the A355 which is the road that runs between Coin and Cartama. If you live on the coast and can’t make it up here, give us a call and we can make an appointment to see you there. If you can’t come and see us personally, call Duncan Burrell on 607 590 977 or call us here at The News on 952 454 491 and let us help you to be able to see a light at the end of that very dark tunnel at last!

Santi drops in Red, white, blue... and It's not every day a professional footballer drops into school for a training session. But that’s what happened at the British School of Marbella last Monday (April 30th) after Spanish national player Santi Cazorla (right with Annabel) dropped in to host a football skills workshop. The Málaga winger spent the afternoon teaching the children how to shoot and dribble the ball before showing off some of his moves. Santi, 27, whose son goes to the school, then organised an impromptu game between the primary aged children before jetting off to Barcelona for Wednesday night’s

important game against the Catalan giants. The skills workshop was part of a Healthy Living topic this week which encourages children to exercise and participate in sport.
Another full house was recorded at the British Society Dinner Dance held at Villa Luisa to celebrate the Patron Saint of England, Saint George. Decorations of red and white on the tables and the flags of England strung across the walls set the atmosphere in the function room for a meal with plenty of choices for everyone to enjoy. The evening began with drinks in the bar before members and their guests moved down to the function room for their meal. The president John Simpson welcomed everyone and introduced the guests. A surprise addition to the evening came when a team

Lifestyle choices to suit you Xpat Planet may not have invented the wheel, but they certainly seem to have improved the functionality of it. Previously “location affected reception” hindered internet connectivity to countryside lovers. Now, fast, cheap access is available and with added extras. Xpat Planet (pronounced EX-PAT) have emerged with a vast range of services within their modular corporate structure. The Xpat Planet brand encompasses technology to satisfy lifestyle choices and is broken down into the following categories:
Xpat Home Xpat TV Xpat Telecom Xpat Eye Xpat Home specialises in home automation and is your solution to automating your living space at a centralised point(s) and reducing your carbon footprint in the process. Xpat TV is designed to satisfy your media needs allowing you to enjoy satellite programmes from your home country.
Xpat Telecom makes you available anywhere on the planet as a local call to friends or clients via our phone service or smart phone. Xpat Eye was established to satisfy your video security monitoring requirements. This satellite-based solution means that the service can operate throughout Europe and even though a well known service is available for calls, it’s limitations can be overcome with your own phone connection.
Some examples of our services are; 1. We can offer a “flat rate” or “pay as you go”, we can even offer call rates of 1 cent per minute to landlines and mobiles in the USA depending on your requirements. Imagine also you have a fixed line in Spain, we can give you an additional line on the same phone, so your second line can be a local call in the country of your choice with the number of your choice. i.e. ideal for business-related opportunities in the UK.
2. Simple in-home or payper-session “hotspots” for a communal area for cost sharing. 3. Remote home monitoring with “live” images are just some of the options available. The first month Internet connection is free, there are no middlemen and costs are kept to a minimum by allowing you to choose options to match your budget. They were introduced as the Senior Mad Morris Men of the British Society and provided their own version of Morris dancing to the amusement of the audience. All seemed to go to plan with the notes of the choreography pinned to the back of one of the dancers to act as a reminder and the sticks being used by the dancers reaching their target rather than the fingers of their partner. The dancers were congratulated and applauded for their performance before the

DAVID THE DOGMAN A Cat's Favourite Hiding Place pt 2 If you can’t find your cat because it’s gone into hiding, start with these favourite spots to look in: - Under the skirt flap of an upholstered chair - In the fireplace - Behind books - Behind the bathtub - Behind the ironing board - In a drawer - In a laundry basket - Under the bed - In a torn mattress lining - Behind the drapes - Behind an open door -On top of the kitchen cupboards - Under the duvet on your bed The amazing thing about a cat's hiding place is often
how small it will be. It's surprising how even the largest of felines can squeeze into the tiniest of spaces when they feel there's "danger" about. So, be creative when searching out a cat's hiding space they certainly were!

This was the scene that greeted people on their way to work or to the bank holiday celebrations in Coin this morning (Tuesday). A backdrop of snowcovered mountains – no they’re not clouds! – meant that the air temperature at
8am was just 8ºC and not the 20º+ that we’d been enjoying recently so, back out came fleeces and woollies but it didn’t seem to deter the chaps who had risen early to get their horses bedecked in all their finery for their ride to the Villa Franco romeria later on in the day.
Age concern receive a fab donation The president of Age Concern, Eileen Dry, was recently delighted to receive a very generous donation of €600 from Dean Shelton of The Duquesa Society of St. George (pictured below) who hosted their 2012 dinner at The Cortijo Vizcaronda in Duquesa on Saturday 21st April. The evening’s entertainment was performed by Trevor Brooks and Michelle Daniels. The event was organised by Dean Shelton from the Foreign Residents Department of Manilva,

Pets of the week
BOOMER
HARVEY
Both Boomer and Harvey are looking for new homes and it would be great if these friends could find somewhere together. The pair are rescue dogs but unfortunately their mum can’t take them with her when she has to move. Both are up to date with their jabs. Boomer loves to have his tummy tickled and is fit and healthy – a very active, loyal and easily trained dog. He was under the training of Javier at Villa Franco who says he is very intelligent. He loves affection and is good with people and can be trained to accept cats if necessary.
Harvey is the youngster and is a real gentleman. He likes his comforts and doesn’t like hard ground for his bed. He has Leishmania but this is under control and his tablets cost just €10 a month so there’s nothing to worry about there. He’s a great guy but doesn’t like to be disturbed when he’s sleeping - who does?! He won the champion of champions from SOS after being the most improved dog having been rescued from SOS. For more information about Boomer and Harvey call Juliette on 654 821 137.
The evening was a great success and the society was pleased that such a large donation could be made to their chosen charity, Age Concern, who will be using the money to support the work of their volunteers assisting older people in the community.

So sad, we never met Recently, 70 years after the German onslaught in Europe that led to the Battle of Britain, my welfare work with the Royal Air Forces Association put me in touch with a lady in Estepona whose late husband had been a WWII RAF fighter pilot. In France, six weeks after D Day, he was shot down and captured. Written by Mike Hamence

I
t was during the Falaise offensive in August 1944 that he bailed out, badly wounded, and was captured. Fortunately the German army handed him over to the Luftwaffe who transferred him to a hospital in Paris.

fter a period of sick leave he returned to his squadron and saw VE Day at a Luftwaffe base in northern Germany.
H
erewith, adapted from Paul Brickhill’s “Escape or Die”, are his own words about baling out of his blazing Typhoon and subsequent plight:
ut, what did all this have to do with me apart from the RAFA connection? As an RAF aircraft technician I was posted to Nº. 266 squadron in Germany in 1967. Five years later found me in Rhodesia with Nº 1 Squadron Royal Rhodesian Air Force, servicing Hunters flown by some of the 266 Squadron pilots from Germany who had rejoined the RRAF.

I got my head and shoulders out then, suddenly I was falling face down looking at the ground rushing up. I pulled the ripchord and hit the ground maybe five seconds later. I was in a little field and had started to squeeze through a
Wheeler climbing into a Typhoon for his first operational sortie after his escape.
T
o think that I served on the same fighter squadron in Germany as Harry Wheeler, albeit a decade later in a different era; lived in a Rhodesian town in the 1960s not an hour’s drive from where he was born and might still have been, then finished up here in Sabinillas, not 10km away from him and his family.
I
find it so sad that we never met.

Mijas town hall will be hosting a new display of art from Friday 4th May for four weeks until the 4th June. The exhibition is the work of five local artists, Wendy Ross, Pam Hendricks, Alexi Kruyt, Anne Hird and Marki Pirlet and is collectively titled “Cinco Mentes” (five minds). The wall hangings, welded sculptures, ceramics and paintings in the exhibition are used to communicate a sense of joy, movement, stillness and the love of nature. They vary in style, size and media resulting in a diverse and interesting display. The opening night gala is on Friday the 4th from 4.00 to 6.00 pm when the five artists will be available to discuss and comment on the Cinco Mentes display. The exhibition will then be viewable between 9 am and 2.00 pm from Monday to Friday in the fountain area. Anyone visiting the impressive Mijas town hall for first time will find ample parking in the multi-storey car park next door. Written by Pete Woodall, Woody’s Los Boliches
Dog show rebooked Sunday’s terrible weather saw this year’s PAD dog show rained off and everybody packing up before we had a lot of soggy doggies. However, all is not lost and the show will take place this coming Sunday, May 6th instead at the same venue – The Nordic Centre on the road that goes up to Mijas Pueblo from Fuengirola. Registration starts at 10am with the first class being judged at 11 am just after the PAD parade which is ex-PAD dogs plus some of their current guests as well. There will be tea and coffee with cakes available, as well as a bar and BBQ. (Last year’s cup-cakes were delicious so we’re hoping for some more of them and, of course the tea and bacon butty when you first arrive is a must.) Come along with your dog or just come and watch all the different classes – including fancy dress and “dog most like it’s owner” (you’ll be amazed!) – at this fun event.
divo Paul Anthony and Heather Bellane and Sid Wright of the Three Pianists Show are all making an appearance. A beautiful Spanish lady, Sara Morales, is singing duets in English with Bobby – does she really understand the nuances of the lyrics? Why is Bob having difficulty concentrating on the piano then? An evening of guaranteed laughter and music. Call 952 474 542 for tickets.

e Avengers Director: Joss Whedon Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson Earth is under threat by alien invasion, global safety is at risk, so who is going to save mankind as we face destruction? Hmm, the plot line sounds familiar. But don’t for one moment let that put you off the bumper blockbuster that is going to set the bar very high for the rest of the year’s action output. Marvel Studios presents Marvel’s The Avengers – the greatest super-hero team of all time, so fasten your seatbelts, you’re in for a
really thrilling ride. Nick Fury (Jackson), head of international peace keeping agency SHIELD, has to create a crack team to fight off the invading forces and bring the world back from the brink of disaster. So he calls on the super skills of Iron Man (Downey Jr), Captain America (Evans), The Hulk (Ruffalo) and Thor (Hemsworth), plus the human heroes
Black Widow (Johansson) and Hawkeye (Renner) to save the planet. The super heroes have all been introduced in their individual franchise movies. It’s not essential to have seen all the previous outings – but do pay attention while they are introduced in the first part of The Avengers. Bottom line – if there is one thing better than an all-action cool superhero movie, it has to be a spectacular romp featuring a
grandstanding team of all your favourites. Sparkling dialogue, witty one-liners, stunning action scenes and great special effects have had the critics pretty unanimously giving this the thumbs up. And even better, you don’t have to be a comic book fan to enjoy it: the characters – and their inflated superegos – are all well drawn and there’s plenty of entertainment for every movie goer.
James leaves me on the fence In 2008 I was introduced to Brendan James. His debut album was called “The Day is Brave” and frankly, I was impressed. It quickly became one of my favourite albums – his voice reminded me a little of David Gray, but with an American accent with a little less of a buzz, unique and alluring When you sit down and listen to this album, James takes you on a journey. His songs have so much depth and experience, but at the same time, they are light and easy to listen to. His melodies are simple and memorable, and his lyrics are beautiful. In the song “All I Can See” he seems to understand what life means to someone who
yearns to live life to its fullest. One of the lyrics in the song always makes me laugh: “I want to learn a completely new language, one I don’t understand.” Hmm, I get your point Brendan, it just sounds a little weird. Another great song is "Green" James’s piano work is superb, again beautiful lyrics. James’s “Hero Song” is what got him acknowledged, the
song is how soldiers must feel and what they must go through in Afghanistan. For such a seemingly young man, he seems to have tapped into the psyche of a mature writer, musician and singer. This album is full of emotional, well-written, fully formed and well arranged songs. James' soul must be far older than he is because he is amazingly tuned in to the
world. It is insightful, warm, rich and dynamic. Unfortunately, his most recent album “Brendan James” which was released in 2010, was a bit of a let down for me. I can’t give enough praise to his debut album, but this new one is just too over-produced for my liking. It seems to have lost that raw talent and amazing piano work and been taken over by synthesizers. By Abigail Tyler
nstead of being all dark Ithought and dreary, this week I I would review a comedy, one that everybody knows. So, the pick of the week is the 1997 “Full Monty”. he plot is remarkably Tinteresting straightforward, it’s an story without too much complexity and twists. Six unemployed men decide to organise a one-night strip-tease show to make money, and the catch is that they'll go completely naked just to get an edge on traditional male strippers. The story focuses especially on Gaz, who needs 700 pounds to win custody rights over his son Nathan; then there's Dave, a man who has issues about his size; Gerald, Gaz's and Dave's former boss; the suicidal Lomper; Guy, the only one doesn't have a problem about showing everything, only he can't dance; and Horse, who tries to live up to his name.
hat makes this movie W so good is that the characters all look very familiar. These aren't guys the size of the average fridge. No, these are 'normal' looking men. One of them is too skinny, another too old, a third one too fat... And the fact that they aren't billionaires, but ordinary guys with everyday problems and concerns makes it all a lot more realistic and makes it a lot easier to like them.
And I guess that's where the main difference between Hollywood and Europe can be found. In Hollywood it seems as though they only want to show perfectly shaped and/or highly intelligent people, while over here they want to use the ordinary guy or woman. n the end, though, the Iunemployment movie is really about and how it forces people to do things they otherwise would not do. One can see these are desperate men in pretty tight spots; especially Gerald, a middle-aged man who's too embarrassed to tell his wife he's lost his job so he keeps pretending he has one for six months and keeps going out in the morning every day to 'work,' when in fact he goes to the job centre. owever, after all is said H and done, this is still a movie and when you take the serious side away from it, it is a brilliant comedy. Robert Carlye gives an excellent performance – one of my favourite scenes is when he’s rehearsing and gets his cigarette caught in his shirt. Mark Addy is just as good, along with Tom Wilkinson, both of whom have done really well since the release of “The Full Monty”, Addy is the main character in a US TV show and Wilkinson just recently starred in “The Exotic Marigold Hotel” . The script of “The Full Monty” is utterly hilarious, there are some great lines, that will stick with you for a long time, like their comments on “Flashdance”: “That joint wouldn't hold up for a day!” he rain may be pouring Theartdown, but don’t let your be troubled. Settle down, snuggle up and put on “The Full Monty” and giggle your cares away!

You could be feeling a bit stuck at the moment and not quite in your own space. It could feel as though you can’t quite find your feet. This is probably because the pace is not quite to your liking, it is all moving a little bit slow for you Aries. There could be a big decision this week, one that will totally alter the direction of your future. The good news is that by the weekend you will be feeling steadfast and strong and this will allow you to spring yourself forward with zest. The key this week is to encourage others to share the load with you, your workload is quite high right now and you need to delegate the responsibilities around a bit. Finances are the focus of your week and you can really make the difference by taking the lead and putting your ideas into action. This will be a great time for socialising and maintaining a light mood, keep your ears open and make sure you listen to others; you don’t want to miss things do you? You will probably feel a real drive within to get as much done as possible and to go as fast as you can, perhaps making up for lost time. This can also increase the chances of making mental mistakes or errors in judgement as you are so caught up in your own world you may fail to consider the events that are occurring around you. Think things through before taking action at the same time as trusting your instincts. You may find that you are more detached from your emotions this week and this allows you to slide from one situation to another in an easy and effortless way. Others will enjoy your company and you are a pleasure to be around. Take risks and chances now as everything will have a way of working out, keep your mind as stress free as possible and this will allow you to be unstoppable. Your popularity is set to soar. These are times when thinking outside of the box allows you to survive and succeed. The ‘normal’ or typical will not get you far right now but the extraordinary will. Even if you think a certain something is a total shot in the dark, it is well worth giving it a go. Your efforts matter more than your words and with your courage and tenacity you are bound to go into this next leg of your journey with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Say what you need to say and then do what you need to do Virgo. Your spirit, your willpower and the fight to do what is right is so strong in you it is to be admired. There may be a number of things that are beyond your control but you still manage to find a space to be brave and influence others. This is a hurdle clearing time, free those negative vibes and let that that paralysed feeling within go and then make your moves.

Turkey mince is economical and low fat. Try it in this quick and easy stir-fry.
Turkey mince stir fry with basil ( Serves 4 )
Ingredients: • 55g/2oz fresh basil leaves (weight
finely grated
after removing stems) • vegetable oil for shallow-frying, plus 4 tbsp for stir frying • 5 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped • 75g/3oz shallots or onions, peeled and finely sliced • 2 fresh green chillies, or to taste, sliced • 2 fresh red chillies, or to taste, sliced • 2.5cm/1in cube fresh root ginger,
• 450g/1lb turkey mince • 5 tsp fish sauce or 1 tsp salt, to taste • 1½ tsp palm sugar or dark brown sugar
Directions Wash the basil leaves and pat them dry. Set aside 15g/½oz of the whole leaves. Chop the rest very coarsely and set aside. Heat 1cm/½in depth of oil in a medium frying pan over a medium-high heat. Place a plate lined with kitchen paper near the hob. Have ready a splatter screen or an upturned sieve to cover the pan to prevent the oil from splattering. When the oil is hot, add the whole basil leaves. Cover immediately with the screen or sieve. Remove the cover as soon as the intense sizzling has died down (a matter of seconds) and stir the leaves once or twice. They will turn crisp very quickly. Remove with a slotted spoon and spread out on the kitchen paper to drain. Once the oil has cooled sufficiently, strain it and reserve for future use. Heat four tablespoons of
oil in a large frying pan or wok over a medium heat. Add the garlic and shallots and fry, stirring, for about two minutes or until the shallots are lightly golden. Do not allow them to burn. Add the chillies and ginger and give a few vigorous stirs. Add the chopped basil and stir. Add the minced turkey, turn up the heat a bit and fry for about 3-4 minutes, stirring to break up the lumps as you do so. The turkey will lose its pink colour once it's cooked. Stir in the fish sauce (or salt), to taste, and the palm sugar (or dark brown sugar) and stir thoroughly to combine. If there is liquid remaining in the bottom of the wok, continue cooking until it boils off, but don't overcook the turkey. Transfer to a serving dish, top with the crisp-fried basil leaves and serve.

Perhaps time got away with itself and caught up with you before you realised it was there and certainly before you were really ready. Perhaps you have been left holding in your heart everything that you wanted to say but didn’t and all the things you wanted to fix but couldn’t. You still need to resolve and tie up the loose ends from the past so that you can dive freely into your desired future. Stand tall, wade in and clear up.
There may be plenty of things that spur you on this week, causing you to want to speak your piece and in some cases throw a few stones - but your power lies in your ability to know when to strike and when to cease. When to talk and when to be silent, remember silence can be an equally powerful messenger - it keeps people guessing, wondering and waiting and it may be the greatest manoeuvre in your current plan, above all it gives you space to lay something to rest.

Health &beauty Too few women use sun cream Not enough women are using sun cream, the charity Macmillan Cancer Support has warned, after a survey of 1,500 women showed that 22% of British women did not wear sun cream when on holiday in a hot country. A charity spokesman said: "Of those who said they never wear sun tan lotion, when asked why, 24 per cent say they don't burn, 14 per cent think sun tan lotion is too expensive and 12 per cent believe it doesn't work." Over two and a half thousand people die of skin cancer every year, the spokesman said, “so it is a real issue". The British Association of Dermatologists has also

raised concerns that too many people are getting burnt. According to its figures, 92% of people had been sunburnt at least once. One in three had been burnt more than ten times. An Association spokesman said: "Not everyone's skin offers the
same level of protection in the sun, which is why it's really important to get to know your own risk level – for example, people with pale skin who burn easily or those with a close family history of skin cancer are at greater risk of sun damage and need to take extra steps to protect themselves."
Insanity misconceptions highlighted Horrific crimes, such as the Anders Breivik case, illustrate the misconceptions the public has about mental illness, according to psychiatrist Simon Wessely, of King's College London. He said the simplest responses to mass killings were that the perpetrators "must be mad" but the way Breivik carried out the killings suggested otherwise.
We all have the possibility to develop a darker pigmentation and we all get tanned after being in the sun , some more than others. Skin pigmentation is our natural sun protection so for those who have a weaker pigmentation, they have less natural UV protection. Everybody has some skin pigmented legions, i.e. birthmarks, moles and so on. When we look at moles we find that nearly all are round or oval, they have sharp and clear borders, most of them are only one colour, their diameter is not more than 6mm and there is no change to their thickness or size.
Healthy eating
All these parameters are reflected in the ABCDErule. A simple method for you to become more aware of your moles is:

This can mean that the normal structure of the nevus has changed, due to irregular cell division. Early diagnosis is the most important thing and indeed, if we remove melanomas with less than 1 mm thickness, evidence shows a 95% success rate. The key is that you should be aware of any changes and follow the simple ABCDE guidelines. Remember that in the initial stages skin cancer (melanomas) never have

Well, he WoulD, WoulDn’T he!
Tony Blackburn reckons he was a hit … but not a patch on old Bill Roach with the ladies Ageing DJ Tony Blackburn told this week’s Radio Times that he reckons he has slept with over 500 women, but that still doesn’t hold a candle to Corrie’s senior bonker Bill Roach who says he has slept with over 1,000 women and actor Jonny Briggs claims to have slept with even more! The “Should’ve gone to Specsavers” advert comes to mind.... what on earth were these women thinking of? Was it a touch of fame that they thought might rub off, or was it the money they thought these poor deluded men might have?
However, Blackburn did say that his tally was something he wasn’t particularly proud of but added “I was single in the sixties,” adding that he is now happily married and never once been unfaithful to his wife “so I’ll never top William.” The sixty-nine-year-old who hosted Top of The Pops for a number of years plus myriad radio shows said in the interview that he thought that singing performers had much more talent today than either The Beatles or The Rolling Stones had in the 60s and 70s. He said that all
they ever did was stand there and sing whereas the stars of today can sing, dance and put on an excellent show citing Rihanna as one of today’s top all-round performers. "I actually think today's artists are better than those of yesteryear," he told the magazine. Blackburn also said that he had been told he had a royal fan, in the form of the Prince of Wales. "I'm reliably informed that Prince Charles always listened when I was on Radio London," he said.
Left: Casenova of the Cobbles, Bill Roache. Right, Tony Blackburn
e Voice just got a whole lot better Duran Duran OK, so I didn’t like The Voice to start with and I still think the way the judges could see each other for the “Blind” rounds and pitching similar singers against each other in the “Battle” round needs working on but Saturday night’s performances where the public voted for their favourites for the first time certainly sorted out the men from the boys (and girls, of course). Definitely the best of the night and unless he makes a huge error is favourite to win the whole competition is Will.i.am’s Jaz Ellington.
A pleasure to listen to This singing teacher has a voice that you could listen to in the car or on the radio for around the next thirty years quite comfortably. Described by Will as “the second coming of song”, at the blind auditions he had most of the judges in tears Yep, he really is that good! In the Battle stages, he absolutely trounced his competition. In this round with the bluesy “At Last” the man was so natural and relaxed it was an absolute pleasure to hear him sing. The guy
could have been professionally singing for decades he was that confident and practically pitch perfect showing yet another side to his talents. Will said that he wanted to describe him as the new Stevie Wonder and was virtually speechless at his performance. Jessie J said all you can do is sit, smile and be in awe. Tom described him as “perfect, he has the whole thing”. He told Danny that he also writes and when asked what songs he would write if he were to write his own album Will said: “Sshhhh” so we’ll have to wait to find out. Another strong contender was Joelle Moses singing a slow number and hitting the high notes to perfection. Afterwards she said she’d just had: “the time of my life”. Also one from the Will.i.am stables and, is there some worry in his Tom’s face? But then Tom had the lovely Ruth Brown. Fashion sense nil points but with a voice like hers, who cares? Having just lost her dad, the auditions were two days before his funeral. No-one had turned round so she gave it all she had on her last night and Tom tuned round. Singing “Get Here”
she said she felt that her dad was still with her. This girl with a big voice hit all the notes and obviously had gained half a ton of confidence from working with Tom for the previous week but she needs to pack up the Mariah Carey twiddling screaming bit. It was said that when she sings, something in the studio lights up. Will asked her if she’d ever had any professional training to which she said “no” – he added that he was proud to listen to her. Jessie J was crying remembering when she was 15 and sang that song and how nervous she was. She told her she was a natural talent and that she had done her father proud.
The weaker links Not so strong, in fact not strong at all was the gushing Sam Buttery and Leanne Mitchell just didn’t make the Pink song that had been chosen for her her own at all. Frances Woods wasn’t too bad and, despite the judges liking his performance, Adam Isaac appeared generally uncomfortable. The youngest in the competition at just 17, Sophie Griffiths had been extremely nervous in
rehearsals but Danny said he was pleased with her and after her performance thought that “she had done everybody back in Ireland proud for one of just 17years-old”. Matt and Sueleen from Team Tom were next and explained that they were now only life partners, the fire had gone out and they had separate bedrooms. What this has to do with The Voice is beyond me! Singing “If I could” by Fleetwood Mac, Matt seemed the much stronger singer with Sueleen hanging on. Obvious friction between the two shone through. Tyler James with his strange hairdo and friend of the late Amy Winehouse singing Stevie Winwood’s “Higher Love” wasn’t bad. Sam Buttery and Sophie Griffin were sent home by the public. by Kym Wickham

Johna F. Sleutjes by email I am a Dutchman and I like the idea of an united Europa. But we still have a long way to go to get this. At least that's what I was thinking until now. Apparently you have some inside information about countries getting united. I am very curious to know, how it can be possible today that the Dutch (!) PM rendered the resignation to the Dutch (!) queen of the Belgian government. As you
Brian Dellar The news item captioned “30 bars defy no-smoking law” must really say it all about the social conditions in the modern Europe, in this case Spain, where despite good laws designed to safeguard the health of those who wish to socialise without having to breathe in foul and toxic air, the establishments, the owners of the bars and restaurants are too scared unnecessarily in my opinion to stop patrons from smoking on their premises and fear not the existing law which was rewritten and effective from the First of January of this year, with much clearer stipulations and stricter penalties and we can only assume that even the police are too lazy or scared to enforce the law. As someone who has never smoked despite my father smoking about 60 a day when I was young, he lived 14 years less than I so far than I have with the last ten years with severe heart disease problems
stated in this weeks (issue 172 of April 25th) issue on page 6. The Netherlands and Belgium one country again after almost two centuries? The first real step to one united Europa? By the way, better not tell this to the Belgians.....history has proven that they are very good in resignations of governments themselves.
You, reporters, probably know more than I do about this matter, and if this turns out to be a big scoop for The News, I congratulate you all! Tell me more, please. Editor says: Oops, I’ll have to have a word with my editor that wrote this but, at least we know if we get something wrong that there are people out there reading The News and spotting our mistakes!

by email despite his being very active all his life, and I would dearly love to have him with me to visit and look after in good health before he died of natural causes. We have all witnessed years, of course, listening to those who do smoke dearly wishing they did not is now recently changing from honest pleadings to defiance because so many consider themselves as “persecuted minorities” as they insist on smoking without any consideration for those close nearby who may even be eating a meal. I have even seen really sick “drag-addicts” eating with one hand and simultaneously smoking with the other, with each hand taking consecutive turns to feed what must be a “diseased body”. Now it is the turn of those who have endured the many years of toxic fumes, in my case 74 of them, and my wife 20 fewer as she also has never smoked, so we can enjoy the remaining few years left to us breathing the natural air that the “weak ones”, now the law breakers, want to foul up. More cries of “but we want to smoke”. Fine do it in your own homes or a long way from others who want clean air to breathe. You are the abnormal ones for the human body was never designed to absorb toxic fumes without dying. I would

suggest that if these smokers are really honest with themselves they do not want to smoke but cannot give it up so let us normal people help them. Let us start up a petition that all applicable establishments must put up “No Smoking” signs in easy to see places and the ones of us with the courage, write to the Press especially the local papers with the courage of putting your name at the bottom, and call in if necessary to your local police station and ask the” jefe” to give you the direct telephone number to call if anyone is smoking when you are out eating and who will send a patrol car to explain that smokers are not allowed to smoke anywhere on the bar premises, not even outside on the terrace as so many smokers seem to believe now. The law was strengthened from January by specifying in detail where people are allowed and not allowed to smoke. Perhaps this newspaper would publish the full details which I read in the Mijas Semanal paper a few weeks ago. They were easy to understand and very specific. The fines now are for each smoker up to €100 a time and thousands for the businesses, not just restaurants/bars. Even taxis are no smoking now.

oy, are we in for a treat this weekend! At 1.35 am on Sunday 6th May the Moon will be directly opposite the Sun in the sky which creates a full Moon. One minute later the Moon will also be at its closest possible point to the Earth, at which time its distance from the centre of the Earth will be just 221,802 miles (356,954 km). This is the closest full Moon to the Earth since January 1912 and so it will appear about 15% larger and 30% brighter in the sky than at any time since then. The next time that the full Moon will be this close will be on December 6th, 2052.
when it is closer to the horizon. This is known as the big Moon illusion. Nobody is really sure why this happens, some think it is because you have objects such as trees and houses in the foreground to compare the size of the Moon against. Others think it is purely an optical illusion, but very accurate measurements have been made and the Moon is no bigger when it is seen on the horizon to when it is high in the sky. But whatever the cause, it is widely known that it really does look bigger. This coming Saturday night I can guarantee that it will look huge as it rises!
A
I
nd better still, at 1.00 am on Sunday morning our part of the Earth will be directly facing the full Moon and so we will be at our closest point to it. Why 1.00am and not midnight as you may expect? Well, we are currently in British Summer Time which means that we have put our clocks forward by one hour so 1.00am is in fact 12.00 midnight as far as the Moon is concerned.
T
he Moon doesn’t go around the Earth in a perfect circle, it has an elliptical or ‘egg shaped’ orbit so sometimes it is at its most distant from us, known as apogee and at other times it is at its closest point which is called perigee. So of course every time the Moon orbits us, about once a month, it does reach apogee and it does reach perigee. But usually it arrives at these two extreme points when it is in its phase mode showing a crescent shape and so we don’t really notice the difference in its size. But this coming Saturday night/Sunday morning the Moon will be at its perigee point almost exactly at the same time as it reaches full Moon. The last time that this occurred was before the Titanic had set sail!
T
here is a common phenomenon that occurs whenever you see a full Moon rising or setting; it always looks bigger
have had people ask me why the Moon sometimes looks bright red in colour as it rises. This is caused by its light shining through our atmosphere in the same way that the Sun can look very red at sunrise or sunset. When it is low down on the horizon its light rays have to pass through thicker atmosphere than when it is higher in the sky, this scattering of the colours gives it a reddish appearance. Varying weather patterns can also add to the effect, remember the old adage ‘Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning’.
B
ecause the Moon affects the Earth’s tides, this coming weekend’s super Moon will have a stronger pull on the oceans causing extra high tides in some places and extra low tides in others. But it is unlikely to cause any lasting damage such as earthquakes and the like. Police forces around the world though are well aware that there seems to be an increase in crime at the time of a full Moon, but this is probably simply because it is lighter for the criminals to see with. Casey Stoner soaked up late-race pressure from home hero Jorge Lorenzo to claim his first ever victory in the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, round two of the new 1000cc era and the first on a European circuit. Malaga 1 - 0 Valencia After last week’s battling draw at Osasuna, Malaga welcomed Valencia to La Rosaleda, in what was billed as the battle for third place. On a wet day Malaga started much the better team , Eliseu making Valencia's keeper save at full stretch. It was all Malaga and with Valencia looking tired after their Europa exploits, Malaga started to take advantage. Camacho got on the end of a cross to send a looping header into the Valenica net on 27 minutes to send the
capacity crowd into raptures. Guaita saved well again before half time from a Carzola strike and Valencia's only reply was a Costa header. In the second half Malaga were creating chances at will, and Rondon was winning everything in the air. Carzola and Joaquin both had chances well saved by Valencia's Guaita and Rondon himself should have done better after after robbing Rani of possession and shooting over. Malaga's
efforts were helped more when the dangerous Feghouli was sent off on the hour for a raised elbow on Eliseu. Carzola then smashed a fierce drive that thundered onto the bar and towards the end Ruud Van Nistelrooy had a great header saved by Guaita. Another three important points and with Barcelona and Athletico Madrid away next week the Champions League dream is alive.
Wiggins regrouped to set the fastest time at the intermediate split and clock a final time of 28 minutes and 56 seconds. That time was seven tenths of a second quicker than rival Andrew Talansky (GarminBarracuda) with Team Sky’s Richie Porte rounding out the podium places on the day, 16 seconds back to elevate him to fourth overall. Said Wiggins, “It’s really

nice to finish it off in a time trial on the last day for the boys. “I think in terms of pressure I’ve got to grips with that now. But I had a superstrong team this week and they’ve put me in this position going into this final time trial just nine seconds down. “I think the whole race saw how strong they were this week and without them I wouldn’t have been able to finish the job today. So I’m delighted to win the time trial and seal the GC to pay them back. You know you’re in a great team when you’ve got the world champion (Mark Cavendish) riding for you on the front.” Report & photo courtesy of www.teamsky.com

Rafael Nadal produced another stunning display on clay to beat David Ferrer and win a seventh Barcelona Open title. A week on from securing his eighth Monte Carlo Masters, Nadal overcame third seed Ferrer 7-6 (7-1) 7-5 in two hours 40 minutes of gruelling tennis. The top seed saved five set points to take the opener before battling past his fellow Spaniard. World number two Nadal becomes the first man in the Open era to capture two ATP events at least seven times. "This is the hardest match I had on clay court this season, David always takes you to the limit," Nadal told Spanish TV. "A bit of it was lottery, luck fell on my side today." The victory was the perfect way to mark the 10th anniversary of his first match on the main tour.

Hodgson for England! Following the news that West Brom have given Roy Hodgson permission to talk to the FA about the England job, many views have been offered on his potential appointment. The news follows an approach from FA chairman David Bernstein to West Bromwich Albion chairman Jeremy Peace. No approach has been made to Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp, who had been viewed as the favourite to succeed Fabio Capello. And is it an
the best choice for an England team badly needing to come together to have any chance of doing well at the Euro championships? Hodgson has previously said: "It would be an honour of course if ever the offer came my way, because it's the pinnacle of success in a way and certainly of coaching success if you are ever invited to manage your own country." Asked if he would take the job if offered it, Hodgson said: "Of course, I think that anyone would."
And now those same sportwriters, journo’s and pundit’s are up in arms. “Hodgson shouldn’t be England’s manager, he aint a patch on good old ‘arry’”. Well he did a magnificent job getting Fulham to the Europa League final, and hanging on until the 116th minute. Fulham played brilliantly that night and it was Hodgson who they played for. And who’s to say that with the right players he couldn’t do the same for England. A yes man he may be, but right now we need to steady the ship and Roy might just be the man to do it.
indication that the old bad blood between Redknapp and Trevor Brooking might still exist — despite Brooking’s insistence to the contrary. Redknapp is without doubt a great motivator, but lacks the tactical nous. So is he really
But already the English media have started attacking the decision not to go for the (media’s) choice Harry Redknap. Have they forgotten already how they backed Hodgson after his sacking by Liverpool, about "how

shamefully Roy had been treated" "how respected he was" "how knowledgable he was" etc?
Remember Sir Alf Ramsey, no one wanted him either but he was one of the best England managers ever. So Roy Hodgson needs the backing of the players and the fans. Lets face it, the job is a poisoned chalice so the FA are really lucky that anyone would even want the job. At least Hodgson shows that he has the bottle for a challenge. The players should give him the respect he deserves and play for him...and the fans.

Luke Donald regains number one spot Luke Donald regained top spot in the world rankings from Rory McIlroy after finishing third in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The Englishman needed a topseven finish to move back to the head of the standings and a final-round 67 saw him finish third, two shots adrift. American Jason Dufner beat Ernie Els in a play-off for his first PGA Tour title after they finished tied on
19 under. Masters champion Bubba Watson carded 70 to end tied 18th at 11 under. The world number one spot has changed hands nine times in the last 18 months, with Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer also holding the position. With Donald absent this week, McIlroy can regain top spot in the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina.
City show their mettle The blue side of Manchester can feel rightly proud of their acheivments in Monday night’s ‘win all’ derby game. the first half an hour, but once City got their goal, a bullet header from Kompany, you would have thought United would have got more men forward, but it never happened. City were dominant in every department and fully deserved their victory. As for the title race, it’s still wide open.
Dwain Chambers and David Millar have taken a big step closer to earning their controversial Team GB selection after the Court of Arbitration for Sport decisively ruled the British Olympic Association's lifetime ban for convicted drugs cheats was illegal. "It is a hollow victory for WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency)," BOA chairman Colin Monynihan said. "We live in difficult days when WADA spends time and money reducing the powers of countries taking stands against doping in sport, such as ourselves, New Zealand and Canada. "On the decision made now by CAS, athletes such as David Millar and Dwain Chambers will be eligible for selection for the Olympic Games. "So long as they meet the eligibility criteria they will be selected by Team GB.

Carter critcises Trump Ali Carter questioned Judd Trump's playing style and etiquette after coming from behind to beat the favourite in the second round. Carter was 12-9 down but recovered to beat last year's runner-up 13-12. "He didn't apologise for any [fluked] shots through the whole match. There's a bit of etiquette in the game," said Carter. But Trump accused his opponent of being after he "childish" sarcastically applauded an apparent fluke shot. Carter said: "Judd pots them from everywhere but there's more to this game than potting them from everywhere and I've proved that today."

3 DAY EVENTING
Badminton Horse Trials cancelled The organisers of the 2012 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials had to cancel the event due to the heavy rainfall in recent weeks. The recent exceptional rainfall has left the ground at Badminton totally waterlogged and partially flooded. The last time Badminton was cancelled due to adverse weather was in 1987. It also fell foul of the British climate in 1975 and 1966.
