At last it’s going to be ‘Scorchio’! Temperatures are set to keep rising this week as Andalucia’s long-awaited summer sunshine appears to have arrived P2 WORLD NEWS - THREE DAYS TO FORM A COALITION
Greek post-election drama continues as the anti-austerity movement across Europe gathers momentum in other countries. The leader of Greece's leftwing Syriza bloc, Alexis Tsipiras, began attempts on Tuesday to assemble a government after the party that won the most votes failed to form a coalition. New Democracy leader Antonis Samaris, whose party topped the poll, had tried and failed to put together a coalition on Monday. His party beat Syriza by a slim margin, but under Greek rules, has a 50seat bonus in parliament for coming first. Mr Samaras stressed on Monday night that his party had done "everything possible" to form a government. He said in a televised address: "I tried to find a solution for a government of national salvation, with two aims: for the country to remain in
the euro and to change the policy of the bailout by renegotiation. We directed our proposal to all the parties that could have participated in such an effort, but they either directly rejected their participation, or they set as a condition the participation of others who did not accept." The 38-year-old Syriza leader has promised to put together a left-wing cabinet to reject the "barbaric" measures associated with the bailout deal. Mr Tsipras said: "We will exhaust all possibilities to reach an understanding, primarily with the forces of the left". But analysts said his attempts, after Sunday's poll, are also unlikely to achieve the necessary numbers.

Mr Tsipras went into talks on Tuesday with President Karolos Papoulias, who was expected to give him three days to try to form a coalition. His first meeting afterwards is expected to be with the leader of Democratic Left, although he is likely to talk to all the party leaders, except the ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn. If Mr Tsipras fails to clinch a coalition deal, the

WORLD Greek post election drama continues Great week
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
last Friday was our 29th anniversary so to celebrate, we stayed in the Tamisa Golf Hotel in a lovely mini-suite (not sure why they call it “mini” as the room is pretty huge with all the usual bedroom stuff plus a big sofa and a balcony overlooking the pool and grounds). We had a great dinner – Chateaubriand which is one of our favourites – in the restaurant then had a lovely relaxing evening and following morning before wending our way back up the hill to home. We have guests coming next weekend so had to get back to do some last minute tidying up so I thought I’d bung the sofa cushion covers in the washer while we got on with other things. Five minutes later, my husband was yelling “Kymie! Quick! Emergency!” so I flew down the stairs to find the living room, kitchen and hallway of the guest area 2” deep in water. The water had gone through into the bit where the soap powder goes but never got as far as the drum so it was everywhere and took us a good three hours to clean it all up – ah well, at least the floors are all clean! And I’m sure the exercise did us good... On Sunday, I was a judge at the annual PAD dog show at the Nordic Centre on the road up to Mijas village. There were so many absolutely beautiful dogs needing a new home and I’ll be showing you some of them soon. See page 19 for the show results and the tale of poor Kiara who is a great big softie and a magnificent dog that needs to be loved.
He said: "It is necessary for the government of national unity to include all the forces that have a proEuropean outlook. The minimum level of agreement is that Greece remains in the euro." Snap elections will be called if no agreement is found, with analysts saying the polls could be held as early as next month.
Anti-austerity movement gathers pace French and Italian voters also rejected austerity candidates in Sunday polls, with French Presidentelect, Francois Hollande, promising that he would seek an alternative to
austerity. And results from local elections in Italy indicate a marked swing away from mainstream parties. An anti-euro protest movement led by comedian Beppe Grillo made significant inroads in Parma and Genoa. With unemployment in Europe at its highest level since the creation of the single currency, resentment has been growing over whether strict budgetary discipline is the best way to tackle a spiral of debt. Street protests are an almost weekly event in Italy, Spain and Portugal as people react to savage spending cuts. For months, economists in Europe and the United States have been advocating a greater emphasis on growth, but
this has only gained traction among European policy-makers and politicians in the past few weeks. Paul Krugman, an economics Nobel Prize winner, has welcomed the anti-austerity groundswell, saying that European voters are proving to be “wiser than the Continent’s best and brightest”. Hannes Swoboda, leader of European Socialists and Democrats, said on Monday that Angela Merkel's radical austerity policy “has pushed Europe into recession, brought about the explosion in unemployment and led to the votes for extremists in Greece and the upsurge in the National Front in
Angela Merkel
France.” “The process of stabilisation must be based on a growth pact to stimulate investment and job creation”. The anti-austerity movement is also gaining ground in Germany. On Sunday the state of Schleswig-Holstein ousted a centre-Right government made up of the same parties as Chancellor
Angela Merkel’s federal coalition. After gaining ground on Ms Merkel’s Christian Democrats, the Social Democratic Party on Monday jumped on the Hollande growth bandwagon, with its president, Sigmar Gabriel, saying his victory “shows there is another solution than a politics uniquely based on austerity in Europe”.
Urdangarin case turns murkier Amid reports that the King’s son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin, was willing to plead guilty to the charges against him to avoid going jail, a national to newspaper has said his former partner at the Nóos Institute, Diego Torres, has
asked him for €10 million, as well as a job and paying his lawyer’s fee of €1 million to prevent him from handing over any further emails that might compromise the reputation of King Juan Carlos. Torres has already handed over emails from Urdangarin that suggest the King used his influence to drum up business for his son-in-law. Urdangarin’s lawyers said Torres' strategy amounted to "gross and unacceptable blackmail".
something “inconvenient” in the emails. Both Torres and Urdangarin face

Bankia boss resigns Unemployment drops as rescue looms The executive chairman of Bankia resigned on Monday as it emerged that the government is willing to use public money to clean up bad loans at the bank. The Partido Popular government had insisted since it was sworn in last December that public money would not be used to rescue banks. But Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said during a radio interview on Monday that “a lack of lending is one of the big problems of Spain, and if it were necessary to save the Spanish financial system, I would not reject injecting public funds”. He added: “My last intention would be to inject or lend public funds, but if it is necessary I will do the same as other governments have done.”

Just over 6,630 people found jobs in April, bringing down the unemployment rate for the first time in nine months. However, it was a much smaller drop than last year when the figure dropped by over 64,000. Market sources have said Bankia could need between €5 and €10 billion to clean up its balance sheet.

The figures for April this year are only better than those for the same month in 2008 and 2009, when the country was in the grip of its worst economic downturn in living history. In February, the government approved drastic reforms of the labour market that make it cheaper and easier to sack workers, arguing they were needed precisely to address the problem of surges in unemployment during economic downturns.

ETA fugitives Govt wants to lose extradition reorganise appeals regional model Convicted Basque killer José Ignacio de Juana Chaos, 56, lost his appeal against being extradited from Northern Ireland to face a new terrorism charge in Spain the day before a London court authorised the extradition of Eneka Gogeaskoetxea who is wanted in Spain on 15 terrorism charges – including a plot to assassinate King Juan Carlos. He fled the country and was arrested in Cambridge in July last year. In Belfast, the hearing about De Juana’s extradition went ahead last Thursday even though nothing has been heard from him since March 2010, when the Recorder for Belfast granted a request for his extradition. The court had rejected claims that it would be unjust or oppressive to surrender De Juana to the Spanish authorities due to his mental state. Last week, the judges said De Juana's

health, alleging that they infringe the powers invested in the region.
Control of education and health was devolved to the country’s 17 regional governments when decentralisation began three decades ago. They were largely responsible for the blowout in public spending, which caused Zapatero’s Socialist government to miss its deficit target of six per cent of GDP by 2.5 percentage points.
De Juana, who was jailed for his part in an ETA campaign of 25 murders in Madrid in the mid-1980s, went to Belfast after he was released from jail in 2008. He had been bailed to live with his wife in the west of the city while fighting the extradition proceedings. But within weeks he breached his release conditions and is believed to have fled Northern Ireland.
The Socialist-controlled region of Andalusia, as well as Catalonia and the Canary Islands, have also raised legal objections to the decrees. Junta de Andalucia premier José Antonio Griñan has said the Socialist-United Left coalition sworn in last week would not implement the government’s labour reforms or reduce spending on health and education.
Sáenz de Santamaría was speaking at her usual Friday press conference just hours after Patxi López, the Socialist premier of the Basque Country, said he planned to appeal against decrees ordering cuts in spending on education and

The abuses began 15 years ago and involved the 61 minors identified during the hearing. Fernando Torres Baena, a former professional fighter described by prosecutors as a “sexual predator,” is
accused of forcing his students to take part in “full-blown sexual orgies” at weekends at his house under the pretence of intensive training sessions. Torres Baena and three other defendants, including his girlfriend, María José González Peña, have denied the charges. Torres Baena’s lawyer said his client had “nothing to hide” and asked for the trial to be open to the press and public.” Prosecutors are seeking a total jail term of 600 years for Torres Baena and a total of 621 years for his co-defendants.

The city council plans to fine motorists who fail to turn off their engines while their car is stationary – even when the driver is inside the vehicle. mayor ana Botella said the aim was to reduce exhaust fumes in a city which is high on the EU’s air pollution list. The measure is one of several changes planned by the council to improve the city's notoriously bad air quality. another measure under consideration is a 10 per cent rise in parking charges in the city centre.

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert told a news conference on Monday that it was impossible to renegotiate the fiscal pact imposing strict budgetary discipline which 25 of the 27 EU member states had signed in March after major wrangling. He was replying to French president-elect Francois Hollande’s call for a shift in strategy towards more growth-oriented measures, including more public spending. Mr Seibert said Angela Merkel would not accept economic expansion based on deficit spending. Despite the warnings, Ms

CIA foils ‘underwear bomb’ plot US intelligence officials have revealed that the CIA disrupted a plot by alQaeda in Yemen to detonate an upgraded version of the failed 2009 "underwear bomb", according to US media reports. News of the operation emerged shortly after the US marked one year since the death of Osama Bin Laden. Last week, the White House said it was not aware of any current al-
Qaeda plots against the US. The device, which was seized by CIA agents, is reportedly being examined by the FBI. The officials said no target had been chosen and no plane tickets purchased by the time the alleged plot was foiled. It is not clear who built the device, but the officials said it shares some features with the bomb sewn into the underwear of would-be suicide bomber Umar
WORLD Farouk Abdulmutallab on a plane bound for Detroit on Christmas Day 2009. The latest device included a powerful industrial explosive and did not use metal, suggesting the bomb could have passed through airport security unnoticed.
Human flesh capsules seized The South Korea Customs Service has seized almost 17,500 capsules containing powdered human flesh since August last year. They were being smuggled into the country from China. The powdered flesh, which officials said came from dead babies and foetuses, is believed by some to cure disease and boost stamina. But officials
said the capsules were full of bacteria and a health risk. Dong-a Ilbo The newspaper said that capsules were being dyed or switched into boxes of other drugs in a bid to disguise them. Some of the capsules were found in travellers' luggage and some in the post, customs officials said.

Allegations that human flesh capsules were being trafficked from north-east China into South Korea emerged last year in a South Korean television documentary. At the time China's Health Ministry said it was investigating the claims raised by the programme.

Sterling highest against Collective Spirit euro for over three years launched Sterling hit a near threeand-a-half year high on Tuesday against the euro in the wake of new political uncertainties in the eurozone, paving the way for cheaper holidays for UK tourists. The pound has risen
against the single currency – to levels not seen since the autumn of 2008 – after elections in France and Greece at the weekend cast doubt on the viability of austerity plans aimed at tackling the eurozone debt crisis. It prompted leading

foreign exchange outlets, including Travelex, to sell euros at a rate of about €1.20 to the pound for the first time in years, meaning UK travellers to eurozone countries can expect to get far more for their money. Analysts said the pound could extend its gains even further if politicians failed to form a new Greek government following an election result that called into question the terms of the country's international bailout. But they also warned that sterling would come under pressure if debt contagion and economic slowdown in the eurozone started to further weigh down the UK economy. The higher exchange rate could spark a turnaround in the beleaguered Spanish tourist industry, making Spain once again one of the cheaper holiday destinations.

A boat made up of 1,200 pieces of wood including fragments from Jimi Hendrix’s guitar and the Mary Rose was launched at Thornham Marina boatyard, near Emsworth, West Sussex where it was made. The launch was attended by over 1,000 people to mark this year’s London Olympics. The boat, officially named Collective Spirit was created as part of a national arts project. Project spokeswoman Tracy Jones said in an interview that many people wanted to have a go on the tiller because that is where the Jimi Hendrix piece is, while many others spent time trying to spot the piece they had donated to the project.

The project was funded by the Arts Council and is built from “pieces of wood that had a story behind them”, given to the builder following an appeal to the general public. Among them are a piece from a Victorian policeman’s truncheon, pieces from the large crates used to transport gold as British securities to Canada during the second world war and pieces from the new Olympic velodrome. The boat will visit locations along the south coast of the UK arriving eventually at the Olympic sailing venue in Weymouth, Dorset in time for the games in August.

Get your wonga elsewhere Another campsite death - if you can Wonga.com are starting to lend to hard-up small businesses. Short term personal loans can cost up to 4,200% if you don’t pay it back in time and the new move into the businesses market was at the centre of a storm on Monday. However, the company has often been at the centre of controversy over their punitive interest rates since its launch in October 2007 and experts said the move represents a stark reflection of the crisis created by banks refusing to lend to small firms. If a high-risk business wanted to borrow £7,500 for a year, the interest costs of £7,800 would be higher than the original loan. Businesses can seek a loan of between £3,000 and £10,000 and can borrow money for as little as a week or up to a year. The application takes around 12 minutes and, if accepted, Wonga says the money reaches the account between 15 minutes and 24 hours later. The new service is currently restricted to
businesses which were set up at least three years ago and have sales of more than £20,000 a month. The fees and charges depend on how risky Wonga decides the business is. For example, a low-risk business pays a fee of 1 per cent of the amount they borrow, rising to 5 per cent for a higher risk. And interest rates rise from 0.3 per cent a week for a lowrisk business up to 2 per cent a week for a high-risk firm. The service is currently only available to limited liability companies and limited liability partnerships but Wonga said it hopes to broaden the criteria in future.
A real alternative? Wonga chief executive Errol Damelin said: “All our research and speaking to other entrepreneurs tells us that small business lending is broken. We intend to use our platform to offer a real alternative.” Mr Damelin said many young, entrepreneurial companies are struggling “because they cannot get quick
access to the credit they need to cope with everyday challenges”. Lord Oakeshott, a Lib Dem peer who resigned over the Government’s Project Merlin initiative to increase bank lending and cut bonuses, said Wonga’s move reflects badly on the banks. He added: “This is the ultimate proof that British banks just won’t lend to small businesses. It is tragic that small firms are forced to go to Wonga by the ‘no-loan sharks’ at the big banks.” Wonga’s representative APR (annual percentage rate) on non-business loans is 4,214 per cent. But it says people do not pay this rate as they can only borrow money for between one day and one month. Latest figures from the Bank of England show net lending – the difference between the amount of loans handed out by banks and the amount businesses paid back – reached a landmark minus £96.5billion between November 2008 and March 2012.

Hannah Thomas-Jones, the fourteen-year-old girl who died at a campsite, The Baron at Bucknell, Shropshire, on Sunday could have died from carbon monoxide poisoning from a disposable barbecue that was found in the porch of the family’s tent.
All four members of her family were found unconscious in the tent on the site but Hannah was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a cardiac arrest. Her 11-year-old brother was described as stable but still “unwell” by doctors at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the parents are said to be in a comfortable condition. The barbecue had been used by the family on the first evening of their bank holiday weekend break where they were staying with the mother’s two
Protests against Venky's and manager Steve Kean rang around the ground throughout the game, as they have with regularity since the team narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship last season. Some fans threw away their shirts while others invaded the pitch at the end of the match and angrily confronted Kean.
It was not long before the chicken had its own Twitter account, alongside the Anfield cat who dashed across the pitch during Liverpool's match with Tottenham Hotspur in February. An account purportedly written by @BigEwoodChicken posted: "Referee should've blown when Yakubu caught me. It was a blatant fowl in the box!"
The ambulance arrived on the scene within five minutes but the crew were unable to save Hannah

Mr Moss will maintain an executive role while internal and external candidates are assessed for the vacancy, the company added.
On April 30th, Mr Moss waived his 2012 salary increase following shareholder concerns over executive pay. Days later, investors revolted over remuneration at the annual general meeting. The investor group Pensions Investment Research Consultants (Pirc) had urged shareholders to

Jerez council 'kidnaps' bus service After a 14-week-long strike, Jerez town council decided to 'kidnap' the urban bus service to ensure that visitors to this week's horse fair will be able to move around the town. The strike by the Urbanos Amarillos bus company workers has been affecting some 20,000 users on a daily basis and local shops and markets have suffered losses of between 50 and 70 per cent. However, hundreds of thousands of people visit
the horse fair, spending enough money to keep many small businesses going for the rest of the year. When it comes to the
town's image and pleasing so many visitors, workers' rights will have to take a back seat until the fair is over.
Steep rise in local train fares The increase in the Cercanias normal fare between Fuengirola and Malaga rose by over 12 per cent on average on May 1st, taking many people by surprise. It was known that Renfe applied for a fare hike in April but no specific date had been published for its implementation. To
make matters worse, the discount for a day return has been eliminated, and travellers now have to pay almost 50 per cent more. The occasional visitor may not notice the difference but commuters who work in Malaga have been particularly hard hit.
A Renfe spokesman said daily commuters can now buy the “Bonotren”, which is valid for ten return trips during a one-month period. Its cost of €23,45 for the Fuengirola–Malaga run works out at just 4 per cent higher than the old oneday cheap return.

Locals want illegal hotel to stay The 14 municipalities which make up the Levante Association of Municipal Governments have asked the Junta de Andalucia and the Environment Ministry to conclude the work on the El Algarrobico hotel which was built illegally on the Carboneras beach in the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park. Work on it was suspended when ecologist groups started to
ask for it to be demolished several years ago. Andalucia's High Court seemed to have settled the matter two months ago when it said the hotel should be demolished. As the parties involved continued to argue, the surrounding municipalities decided that the hotel should stay for economic reasons as it will provide
much-needed jobs in an area where the unemployment rate is almost double the national average. It looks as though the controversy will be around for many years to come because the prodemolition parties have no intention of giving up the fight.

MijAS The Local Police in Fuengirola have taken 114 preventive actions against the owners of potentially dangerous dogs, of which there are 385 registered at the town hall. At a national level, the eight breeds of potentially dangerous dogs are the Pit bull terrier, the Staffordshire bull terrier, the American Staffordshire terrier, the Rottweiler, the Dogo argentino, the Fila brasileiro, the Tosu Inu, and the Akita Inu. The Junta de Andalucia has added Bull terriers, Presa Canarios, Napolitan mastiffs and Boxers to the list. These breeds cannot be taken out in public without a leash and muzzle and must be registered at the town hall. Before being granted a licence, the owner has to be assessed by a psychiatrist and must have insurance coverage of at least €120,000. Most of the preventive actions in Fuengirola involved warnings but 56 owners were fined.
Dogs to clear out wild boars The junta de Andalucia’s environment department has approved sweeps with dogs to prevent wild boars from digging up golf courses and private gardens in the town this summer. However, the men with the dogs cannot be armed, a spokesman said, adding that the boars can only be hunted in officially licensed hunting areas. He said special traps may also be used to catch the animals and return them to their natural habitat in the hills.

The national sport
New deal taking shape
T
I
he national sport is not bullfighting as some people believe but vicious attacks on the current prime minister that make the fiesta brava look like child’s play. I wasn’t living in Spain when Felipe Gonzalez relentlessly pursued then PM Adolfo Suarez, unsettling the military and causing Suarez to resign in order to avoid a coup attempt – which happened anyway. I wasn’t here either when Gonzalez went on to become the country’s first Socialist prime minister since the last one fled the country in 1939. For a few years he was the country’s golden boy, being a mere 40-year-old when he was elected. But he came under relentless attack from José Maria Aznar (and lots of his own people) when a series of financial scandals involving members of his government and allies surfaced in the 1990s, although it was the GAL death squad scandal that shocked the most. The other scandals involved filthy lucre but the GAL squad, founded with the government’s connivance to “take out” members of the Basque terrorist group ETA, actually killed a number of innocent people. Spaniards are used to politicians stealing lots of money but they don’t like seeing innocent people gunned down. That raises the spectre of all those thousands who were executed by both sides during the Civil War and by Franco when he “cleansed” the country of his political enemies afterwards.
G
onzalez ran for the fourth time in 1996, even though his own party didn’t want him because he was considered too much of a handicap, but they couldn’t find anyone else to run in his stead. He was roundly defeated by Aznar who stoically ignored all the insults thrown at him by the Left – and believe you me, those people hold Ph.Ds in insulting the powers that be. He’d said from the very beginning he had no intention of governing the country for more than two terms so it was Mariano Rajoy who had to swallow the bitter pill of losing to José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
I
arrived back in Spain in October 2002 and caught the last 18 months of the Aznar government. I remember how Zapatero leapt to his feet every other minute in Parliament with some piddling criticism or other, boring the pants off most of us. And I do remember how the Socialists exploited the unpopular war with Iraq after the March 11th train bombings which brought out the anti-war faction on election day and brought in Zapatero.
I
also remember when that paragon of democratic virtue, Gaspar Llamazares, who was leader of the United Left at the time, said “the PP must never be allowed to govern the country ever again”. How he was going to prevent it he never said, but one tactic used widely by the Socialists and the Left in general was to raise the spectre of the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship whenever they referred to the PP – “If you vote for these people, look what you’ll get” sort of attitude. It worked for a few years until the Spaniards realised what incompetent fools Zapatero and his minions were and voted for the PP, giving Rajoy the comfortable majority the voters had never given to Zapatero. How undemocratic of them!
W
ell, if they voted for the PP, they have to be responsible for the “undemocratic” government and its “undemocratic” leader. The word “undemocratic” never fails to crop up when people on the Left – especially Socialist leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba and United Left leader Cayo Lara – talk about the government, that is, all day long. Apparently the only democrats in Spain belong to the Socialist Party, the United Left and the more radical Catalan and Basque nationalist parties. More moderate nationalists are not democratic because they are willing to admit the PP government and all the people who voted for it might actually be human, and not fangs-dripping-with-blood reincarnations of Franco.
N
ow that the United Left has finally achieved a big slice of power in Seville, we’re going to be swamped under a deluge of their “democratic” actions. One disturbing example is that the Junta’s new head of tourism, a United Left man, believes the “sun, sea and sand” brand of tourism is on the way out – exhausted was the word he used – so he is going to concentrate on fomenting rural tourism. For starters, rural innkeepers need the money, however rural tourism is not so popular with all those decadent, running dog, foreign capitalists who insist on littering up Andalucia’s beautiful beaches – and propping up the region’s economy while they’re at it. But most of all it illustrates the radical Left’s attitude of “not to worry your little head about these things, we know what’s best for you so just do as you’re told”.
G
od save us all from Spanish democrats!
t isn’t going to be easy for François Hollande to save the rest of Europe from plunging off the cliff but he is certainly going to try. The victory celebrations in Paris and the rest of the continent are still being held following the French Socialist leader’s win over Nicolas Sarkozy during Sunday’s run-off. There is renewed hope that Hollande will pull his weight and convince Angela Merkel, Europe’s de facto leader, that you can’t have austerity if it doesn’t go hand-in-hand with growth. Soon after his victory, Hollande’s advisers were quickly clarifying that France is not looking to scrap the European fiscal pact but instead add new amendments that ensure Brussels will do more to stimulate the economies of troubled nations, such as Spain, Greece and Italy, where people’s living standards have already begun to hit rock bottom. Finding a compromise between growth and belt-tightening with the rest of Europe is crucial.
A
nd it isn’t expected that any concrete measures will come out of his meeting next week with Angela Merkel but he will state his case. As Le Monde put it this week, Hollande won’t be able to reverse the strict austerity trend overnight. During the final French presidential debate last week, Hollande explained that he wants a type of New Deal, similar to the one Franklin Roosevelt put in place during the 1930s, with public works projects and the complete modernisation of the continent, to help put people to work and jump start the badly weakened economies.
I
n Spain, the Socialists were rejoicing at the Hollande victory. For months before the November elections, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba had been pushing for capitalisation from the European Investment Bank (EIB). Some financial analysts believe that the EIB could lend some €60 billion to back infrastructure projects across the continent. Germany and the ratings agencies, Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s, now appear to be tilting toward relaxing austerity as they see the winds of political change coming not only from France, but Greece as well after voters revolted over Berlin’s sour economic formulas and also opted to sweep in the far Right and far Left parties on Sunday. The radical Greek left coalition opposes the European bailout and has suggested that Athens just stop
paying all it debts for the time being until the country can get back on its feet.
P
rime Minister Mariano Rajoy has been very cautious about issuing any public statements, other than ones, regarding congratulatory Hollande’s victory. But there are new signs in the press that Brussels is willing to relax Spain’s commitments to meet its goal to bring down the deficit to 3 per cent of GDP by the end of next year. With more than 5.6 million people out of work, the EU is finally recognising that Spain cannot keep austerity intact with so many people unemployed. Yes, the winds of change appear to be blowing in. The most important thing is that these gusts are not coming from abroad but from within.
Bienvenido Mr Adelson
S
heldon Adelson, the US casino king, will soon make his decision as where he wants to build his gaudy EuroVegas project in Spain but it appears he seems to be favouring a site right outside of Madrid, in the suburb of Alcorcón. Adelson made a whirlwind visit over the weekend to look over a plot of land where his mega casino-hotelconvention centre may finally take shape. Of course there are two other candidates as well – a second Madrid suburb, Valdecarros, and Barcelona. The Popular Party (PP) regional government of Esperanza Aguirre is giving Adelson all the comforts and provisions he needs to make him happy so he can select one of the two Madrid locations. There are many people who don’t want a Las Vegas strip straddling their beautiful city, fearing that it will only usher in all the lawless and tawdry elements But with 260,000 construction jobs on the horizon and no other immediate secondary deals to encourage new investment in the Spanish capital, Adelson’s project is God-sent.
L
et’s face it, Spain’s long tradition is tourism. There are no industries here, other than the service and entertainment sectors, that can spark growth at this crucial time. Twenty years ago, people hated the idea of putting a Disneyland right outside of Paris, believing it would flop. But two decades later Mickey and the gang are still going strong. It is time to roll the dice and welcome Mr Adelson.

Pontypridd Male Voice Choir coming to the Salon The Pontypridd Male Voice Choir has developed a terrific reputation and strong lasting friendships all over the world, from Cyprus to Sacramento. This week they are continuing that tradition here in Fuengirola with two concerts at the Salon Varietes Theatre on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th May. The concert described as an evening of song from the land of song will be conducted by Jonathan Gulliford and the soloist is Ben Smith. The choir has a long history. Reformed after the Second World War in 1949, it is rich in talent and musical qualifications. They have won the famous Eisteddfod festival and recently performed on the BBC. In the past they have sung alongside such famous names as Sir Harry Secombe, Marlene Dietrich, Max Boyce and Gillian Humphreys
as well as performing on no less than seven occasions at the Festival of a 1000 Voices held at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Although not a professional organisation, the choir continue to support local, national and international organisations and charities and from time to time they produce a CD – their latest effort, A Voice of Singing will be available after the concert at the Salon Varietes which will start promptly at 8.00 pm. DAVID THE DOGMAN Are dogs to blame? Dog bites are a serious problem. Each year, 9.7 million people are bitten by dogs, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Around 17 percent of these people require medical care. And in approximately 10-20 tragic cases per year, the bite victim is killed. The CDC has labelled dog bites as "epidemic." Half the children in the world are bitten by a dog before the age of 14. The ten breeds involved in the most lethal attacks over the past ten years are Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, German
Shepherds, Huskies, Malamutes, Dobermans, Chow Chows, St. Bernards, Great Danes, and Akitas. In response to this growing problem, some communities have banned ownership of certain dogs that are perceived as dangerous, particularly Pit Bulls and Rottweillers. But are some breeds really more dangerous than others? More on this next week. David is on Talk Radio every Saturday from 10am - 11.am (Calahonda to Nerja) 88.9fm (Calahonda to Algeciras) 91.9fm

2012 Mijas Taxes Knit & Natter La Cala As of May 4th, you can pay all of the 2012 municipal taxes in Mijas – rates (IBI), rubbish (Basura) collection and treatment and road tax (IVTM). The taxes can be paid either directly to the town hall or its local offices in La Cala de Mijas and Las Lagunas, but not in cash. Cash, it seems costs money, it costs money to take it, to transport it, and to count and account for it. Costs in this day and age are not popular, so in order to reduce those costs, all taxes since January are only payable either by credit or debit card, by certified cheque but not by personal cheque. In fact many institutions no longer want to handle any cash. The way to go is direct debit and to thank and encourage the citizens of Mijas to sign up to direct debit, the town hall will give a 5 % discount to anyone who arranges

“Battleship” is the 40th film in English at La Trocha and to celebrate the event, all tickets for each of the four sessions will be put in to a draw. The winning ticket/seat number will be offered a pair of free tickets to return to the cinema for another film in English. Since we started the latest round of films in English at La Trocha – just over three years ago – 4,630 tickets have been sold. As we head towards our 5,000th ticket, I thought it might be nice if people could let me know which was the best film, the worst, the most surprising, which one you'd like to see again (no promises!) etc. I'm going to put some of the comments on the website to celebrate our 5,000th ticket, so anything else you can think to include would be appreciated. The sci-fi action film
“Battleship” stars Liam Neeson, Alexander Skasgaard and Rhianna. Centenary to be celebrated on Sunday The growing recognition of the potential for aircraft as a cost-effective method of reconnaissance and artillery observation, led the Committee of Imperial Defence to established a sub-committee to examine the question Written by of military aviation in November 1911. Geoff Heading
T
he following February the sub-committee recommended that a flying corps be formed and should consist of a naval wing, a military wing, a central flying school and an aircraft factory. The recommendations of the committee were accepted and on April 13th 1912 King George V signed a royal warrant establishing the Royal Flying Corps. The Air Battalion of the Royal Engineers became the military wing of the Royal Flying Corps a month later on May 13th.
T
he Flying Corps' initial allowed strength was 133 officers, and by the end of that year it had 12 manned balloons and 36 aeroplanes. The RFC came under the responsibility of Brigadier-General Sir David Henderson, the Director of Military Training, and had separate branches for the Army and the Navy. Major Sykes commanded the military wing and Commander C R Samson commanded the naval wing. The Royal Navy however, with different priorities to that of the Army and wishing to retain greater control over its aircraft, formally separated its branch and renamed it the Royal Naval Air Service in 1914, although a combined central flying school was retained.
T
he RFC's first fatal crash was on July 5th 1912 near Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain. Those killed were Captain Eustace B. Loraine and his observer, Staff Sergeant R.H.V. Wilson, flying from Larkhill Aerodrome. An order was issued after the crash stating "Flying will continue this evening as usual", thus beginning a tradition which continues to this day.
I
n August 1912 RFC Lieutenant Wilfred Parke RN became the first aviator to recover from an accidental spin when the Avro G cabin biplane, with
RAFC cap badge
which he had just broken a world endurance record, entered a spin at 700 feet above ground level at Larkhill Aerodrome. Four months later on December 11th 1912 Parke was killed in the crash of the Handley Page monoplane in which he was travelling from Hendon to Oxford.
A
t the start of World War I the RFC, commanded by Brigadier-General Sir David Henderson, consisted of five squadrons – one observation balloon squadron (RFC No 1 Squadron) and four aeroplane squadrons RFC No 2 and No 3 Squadron which were the first fixedwing flying squadrons in the world. On 19th August the Corps undertook its first action of the war with two of its aircraft performing aerial reconnaissance. The mission was not a great success. In order to save weight each aircraft carried a pilot only instead of the usual pair of pilot and observer. Because of this, and poor weather, both of the pilots lost their way and only one was able to complete his task. Two days later on August 23rd 1914 the RFC found itself fighting in the Battle of Mons and two days after that the Flying Corps gained its first air victory. On August 25th Lt C.W. Wilson and Lt C.E.C. Rabagliati forced down a German Etrich Taube which had approached their aerodrome while they were refueling their Avro 504. Another RFC machine landed nearby and the RFC observer chased the German pilot into some nearby woods.
W
hen the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) arrived in France in August 1914, it had no observation balloons and it was not until April 1915 that the first balloon company was on strength, albeit on loan from the French Aérostiers. The first British unit arrived on the 8th May 1915, and commenced operations during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. Operations from balloons then continued throughout the war. Highly hazardous in operation, a balloon could only be expected to last a fortnight
before damage or destruction. Results were also highly dependent on the expertise of the observer and were subject to weather conditions. In order to keep the balloon out of the range of artillery fire, it was necessary to locate the balloons some distance away from the front line or area of military operations. However, the stable platform offered by a kiteballoon made it more suitable for the cameras of the day than an aircraft.
H
eavier than air craft were first used for aerial spotting on September 13th 1914, but only became efficient when they perfected the use of wireless communication at Aubers Ridge on May 9th 1915. Aerial photography was attempted during 1914, but again only became effective the next year and by 1918, photographic images could be taken from 15,000 feet, and were interpreted by over 3,000 personnel. In 1914 with the land armies deployed, the French air force vastly outnumbered the RFC, and accordingly did more of the fighting. Despite the primitive aircraft, aggressive leadership by RFC commander Hugh Trenchard and the adoption of a continually offensive stance operationally in efforts to pin the enemy back led to many brave fighting exploits and high casualties – over 700 in 1916, the rate worsening thereafter, until the RFC's nadir in April 1917; dubbed 'Bloody April'.
T
his aggressive if costly doctrine did however provide the Army General Staff with vital and up-to-date intelligence on German positions and numbers through continual photographic and observational reconnaissance though the entire war. The RFC was also responsible for the manning and operation of observation balloons on the Western front.
P
arachutes were not available to pilots of the RFC's heavierthan-air craft during the First World War – although the Calthrop Guardian Angel parachute (1916
Armstrong Whitworth FK8 model) was officially adopted just as the war ended. By this time parachutes had been used by balloonists for three years.
O
n August 17th 1917, South African General Jan Smuts presented a report to the War Council on the future of air power. Because of its potential for the 'devastation of enemy lands and the destruction of industrial and populous centres on a vast scale', he recommended a new air service be formed that would be on a level with the Army and Royal Navy. The formation of the new service would, moreover, make the under-utilised men and machines of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) available for action across the Western Front, as well as ending the inter-service rivalries that at times had adversely affected aircraft procurement.
T
herefore on April 1st 1918, the RFC and the RNAS were amalgamated to form a new service, the Royal Air Force (RAF). The RAF was under the control of the new Air Ministry. After starting in 1914 with some 2,073 personnel, by the start of 1919 the RAF had 4,000 combat aircraft and 114,000 personnel.
B
y the end of 1918 and the Great War the composition of an RFC/ RAF squadron varied depending on its designated role, although the Commanding Officer was usually a Major (in a largely non-operational role), with the Squadron 'Flights' the basic tactical and operational unit, each commanded by a Captain. A 'Recording Officer' (of Captain/Lieutenant rank) would act as Intelligence
Officer. Each flight contained on average between six to ten pilots (and a corresponding number of observers depending on the type of squadron) with a Senior Sergeant and thirty-six other ranks (as fitters, riggers, metalsmiths, armourers etc.) transport and support sections completed the squadron strength.
A
t the end of the war there were 5,182 pilots in service (just 2% of the RAFstrength). In comparison the casualties from the RFC/RNAS/RAF for 1914–18 totalled 9,378 killed or missing, with 7,245 wounded. Some 900,000 flying hours on operations were logged, and 6,942 tons of bombs dropped. The RFC claimed some 7,054 German aircraft and balloons either destroyed, sent 'down out of control' or 'driven down'.
E
leven RFC members received the Victoria Cross during the First World War. Initially the RFC did not believe in
publicising the victory totals and exploits of their Aces. Eventually however, public interest and the newspapers' demand for heroes led to this policy being abandoned, with the feats of Aces such as Captain Albert Ball raising morale in the service as well as on the "home front".
F
or a short time after the formation of the RAF, pre-RAF ranks such as Lieutenant, Captain and Major continued to exist, a practice which officially ended on September 15th 1919. For this reason some early RAF memorials and gravestones show ranks which no longer exist in the modern RAF. A typical example is James McCudden's grave, though there are many others.
T
he RFC's motto was Per ardua ad astra ("Through adversity to the stars"). This remains the motto of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and other Commonwealth air forces today.

New art exhibition opens in Mijas Cinco Mentes (Five Minds) introduces works by five artists and sculptors with very dierent approaches, on view at the Ayuntamiento until June 4th The Patio de las Fuentes (so called because of the two star-shaped fountains it contains) was crowded last Friday evening when the exhibition opened. Four of the “Five Mindsâ€? – Alexi Kruyt, Pam Hendricks, Ann Hird and Wendy Ross – introduced themselves and their work. The fifth Mark Pirlet, known as Marki was in Belgium. The works on display are all fascinating – but in very different ways. Marki's
extremely large and powerful portraits along the back wall are interspersed by six of his striking metal sculptures known as “Flying Men. Pam's smaller frames contain abstract designs in felt containing elements of metal, wood or beads, each one carrying the name of a person (for instance Josh, Becca and Caleb). Designed for warmth and comfort, the age-old medium is apparently
much used by artists in Finland. Alexi, who is Dutch (although she was actually born in Ireland), specialises in ceramics because she says she “loves to work with the earth. She is particularly fond of creating large clay pots and for this exhibition they are decorated in an Andalucian theme featuring elements of the countryside, including flora and fauna.

Director: Adrian Grunberg Starring: Mel Gibson, Kevin Hernandez In recent years Mel Gibson has hit all the headlines for the wrong reasons and it seemed that there was little that the Oscar winning actor and director could do to turn the tide of opinion. Well, in this slick violent thriller he has got back to basics and with the help of witty one liners that take you back to his Lethal Weapon days, he is the mainstay of a pretty stylish albeit bloody action movie.
Mel carries the weight of the movie on his shoulders as his co-stars are little known and does so with some panache although this one won’t be in the running for any Oscars. He plays an un-named character referred to in the credits as the Driver who escapes into Mexico with a couple of million dollars and a dying accomplice in his car. He falls foul of corrupt cops and is packed off to a brutal Mexican prison where wives and
kids live with the inmates. Here he meets a savvy nine-year-old, played by Hernandez, and gets caught up in a plot to wipe him out. The money he was caught with was stolen from a nasty San Diego mobster and to prove there is no hiding place assassins break into the prison to try and kill him. After a full-on gun battle – which of course he wins – Mel is given his freedom by the

Mexican gangster who runs the jail to seek his revenge. The movie is about what Mel Gibson has done so well in the past and demonstrates that the 56year-old still has the style and physical moves to handle good old fashioned action roles. So, not up there with his Oscar performances, but a lively and tense action-packed thriller which hits the ground running.

When a cataclysmic explosion devastates New York, eight strangers take refuge in the basement of their apartment building, a converted fallout shelter. The shelter suddenly comes under attack by men in hazmat suits forcing the strangers to join forces in a desperate bid to take on the new enemy.

When an American astronaut stumbles upon their secret Moon lair, the Führer (Udo Kier, Blade) decides to unleash their alien armada upon the unprepared Earth, to be led by ruthless army leader Klaus Alder (Gotz Otto, Schindler's List,
"I was going to marry him." Soon everyone, including Peter's family, thinks she's Peter's fiancée, and Lucy soon finds herself too caught up in the affectionate madness to tell the truth. Even after Peter wakes up –- not remembering her but assuming it's amnesia – Lucy quickly realises, that while Peter was sleeping she had fallen in love with Peter´s brother Jack. his movie has all the Trules, basic romantic comedy so to speak – girl meets boy, girl loses boy, girl gets boy back, but in this case the other boy. It has the same lull as all of these fluffy films, when there is some 25-30 minutes left, the lull sets in – the main character has been caught in a lie or they have lost the object of their affection, but 10 minutes later everything works out perfectly. One of the reasons I like this film, is because the heroine ends up with the guy she didn’t expect, and I suppose I find it more believable, as life can be unpredictable. nfortunately, life is U never as perfect as a romantic comedy, but there is nothing wrong with watching one and hoping that your very own Prince Charming may come along in the same manner as these films.

comical dialogue, great cast and it’s a nice Christmassy feel good movie. To me it’s like putting on an old comfy jumper, you can watch it over and over and never get tired. I’m not too fond of romantic comedies, but I really do like “While you were Sleeping”. Weird!

You are getting to grips and masterminding some irrational impulses that might have been getting the better of you. Saturn the planet of responsibility reaches out to show you how to prevent chaos and maintain a sense of level headedness in your life. There is intensity and a strong passionate feeling growing within that is true and can be trusted, so stand your ground and do not let doubt interfere with what you know is right for you. Watch out for the temporary fix right now, patching things up and not fixing them properly. The same goes for falling for the quick fix of flattery and charm from another, even if you know that something isn’t going to last, the thrill could be what you are seeking. You may notice that something is lacking in your life and you could be tempted to compromise or fall for what may only satisfy you short term. Nurture yourself this week. As soon as you feel emotionally secure you attract all that you need to you and find peace in the knowledge that you are self-reliant. You are craving more depth and meaning in your life now and are eager to expand your horizons to fulfil that growing restlessness within. What used to satisfy you does not come close anymore. Avoid procrastination this week and step out of your comfort zones, by doing this you will realise you have it all. You have been pushed way beyond what you even thought your emotional limit was, but we never know what we are truly made of until this happens. The last few weeks have been tough and this weekend you reach a turning point where something you held to be true you see from a different perspective. From this a rare feeling of freedom will soon follow and you will feel much stronger and wiser than you did before. The weekend has you reviewing your fated past and emotionally connecting with events that occurred. Love is on your mind and it is a powerful pull, as good and as soft as it can feel, it can also have an invisible hold on you. At times too it can feel as if it has mind of its own. It is healthy to review as this process tells you about who you have been and how far you have come – you always feel better when you can measure your growth.
Even though you could feel accustomed to a relative lingering hardship you are awaiting the rewards for all of your patience. Life lately has simply asked more from you but because of this you have developed some kind of discipline and the patience needed has probably toughened you up. Very soon some clouds will part September 23rd - and you will begin to sense the trickling of reward coming your way. A trickle of joy October 22nd is all you need to give you more staying power

A relationship becomes transparent this week and in some cases you could discover more than you would like. The honesty and clarity that is formed will ultimately allow for a new level of depth and commitment. Imperfections are exposed but at the same time so is beauty. A liberating passion will fuel your tank and enter your heart. This is a time of illumination that will help you to understand another key person in your life and also know yourself a little more.
SAGITTARIUS Your dreams are likely to be vivid right now and you would do well to write them down, reoccurring dreams could happen or perhaps you find that you life is mirrored by what you are currently dreaming about. Others are gathering around to support you and you have no problem in attracting people that are in your November 22nd - game plan. You are naturally generous by nature and enthusiastic when armed December 21st with a mission; this passion infects and energises those around you.
CAPRICORN When we are all shook up it makes us look a little bit harder at what is around us. Inner breakthroughs are likely this week as well as a rebellious feeling rising within. Expect the unexpected at the moment, it is a week that is not usual and plans could go awry. It could be in your best interests to remove resistance to tide and let it flow and carry you where it needs to go. There are moments and periods in life when the only option you have is to let go and see where it all lands, letting things pan out. When you let go of the reins you could be surprised at where you end up, sometimes it is better than you could ever have imagined. Weak links in your life are likely to be exposed but with this knowledge you can move forward with confidence.

LESSON
August 23rd September 22nd
You may feel as though you are working hard and the effort you have been putting in has been substantial, progress is on its way and all your efforts are due to be paid handsomely. Your harvest is coming. Deep emotions rise up to the surface at the weekend and you will be eager to communicate your feelings to a loved one. This week is all about motion and things start making headway at long last.
Save, save, save. As we have seen many times, context can completely change the meaning of a word. If you decide you have to save money you use the verb ahorrar. Los ahorros means savings. Tengo que ahorrar más dinero - I have to save more money Sus ahorros suman dos mil euros - He has 2000 euros saved. Por este sistema ahorras 50 euros - This way you save 50 euros. Estoy ahorrando para comprarme una bici nueva - I'm saving up for a new bike. You can also use ahorrar when you want to talk about saving time. Para ahorrar tiempo vamos por tren - To save time we're going by train. Por esta ruta ahorras por los menos veinte minutos - By this route you save at least twenty minutes. Salvar means to save in the sense of saving a life Me salvó la vida - He saved my life Salvese él que pueda - Each man for himself. Una salvavidas is a life-jacket. Guardar is to save in the sense of keeping. Voy a guardar estos sellos para mi hermano - I'm going to save these stamps for my brother Reservar is to save as in to keep for later or to keep. Se reserva para mañana - He's saving himself for tomorrow. Resérvame un asiento - Save me a seat And if someone is safe and sound this becomes salvo y sano (safe and sane) in Spanish. Hasta la próxima. Valerie

Nutrition needs change with age As we grow older, nutrition rules change, or at least get stricter. Here are some pointers, which apply to people in their 50s and over but should not be ignored by those in their 30s and 40s. lVitamin B12 is needed to make blood cells and improve cognition, and gets into the body along with animal proteins like eggs or meat. But for the body to use B12, it needs to dissolve it away from the protein and this gets more challenging with age as the level of stomach acid decreases.
B12 not bound to protein is found in fortified cereal and supplements and is more readily absorbed by the body. Starting at age 50, you should get most vitamin
B12 from these types of fortified foods. lBananas: Blood pressure tends to rise as we age. To combat this problem and lower stroke and heart attack risk, you should eat less sodium and more potassium. A banana is rich in potassium, and so are broccoli and baked potatoes (with the skin). lFewer calories. As we get older, our metabolic rate slows down, so our calorie intake should drop accordingly. In general, people also tend to move less as they get older so extra calories may mean extra pounds, which ups the risk of heart disease, diabetes risk, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.
lDrink more water. The sensation of thirst can decrease over time and certain medications such as antihistamines and blood-pressure drugs can make you more prone to dehydration. So drink more water because dehydration is one of the main reasons older adults end up in the hospital. Women are advised to drink about 2.2 litres, and men 3. Try to limit coffee, tea, and alcohol because caffeine and alcohol are diuretics, which up dehydration risk. lCalcium is good for your bones – adults should get 1,000 milligrams a day, but that rises to 1,200 milligrams for women over 50 and men over 70. The maximum calcium intake
from food and supplements is 2,500 milligrams a day for adults, or 2,000 milligrams a day if you're over 50. More than that can up the risk of kidney stones and other problems in some people.
a day is enough. For sun avoiders, a supplement of 600 international units per day is recommended,
lVitamin D is needed for
your body to absorb and properly use calcium. This vitamin is naturally gleaned from the sun and an exposure of ten minutes
Curry's cancer fighting ability tested Forty patients at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital are to take part in a trial to assess the ability of curcumin, a chemical found in curry, to kill bowel cancer tumours in patients. Curcumin, which is found in the spice turmeric, has been linked to a range of health benefits and studies have already shown that it can beat cancer cells grown in a laboratory. It has also been suggested that it can help stroke and dementia patients as well. The trial will compare the effects of giving curcumin pills seven days before starting standard chemotherapy treatment. Prof William Steward, who is leading the study, said animal tests combining the two were "100 times better" than either on their own and that had been the "major justification for cracking on" with the trial. He said: "This research is at a very early stage, but investigating the potential of plant chemicals to treat
cancer is an intriguing area that we hope could provide clues to developing new drugs in the future." A spokesman for Cancer Research UK, said: "By doing a clinical trial like this, we will find out more about the potential benefits of taking large amounts of curcumin, as well as any possible side effects this could have for cancer patients."

Some like him, Some loathe him, but PriNce harry iS Seldom out of the NewS
e prince receives top award … for his charity works, specifically with disabled servicemen and women Prince Harry has pretty much seen it and done it all. In his younger days he must have been a nightmare to his father with reports on a daily basis about which club he had fallen out of in the wee small hours, and most won’t have forgotten his misguided fancy dress of a Nazi officer at one party. However, this is a prince of many colours. He has recently completed his first solo tour – the Diamond Jubilee Tour of the Carribean and Brazil – representing the Royal Family and was an
absolute hit with the countries he visited. This is a prince that attends uber-formal dinners and events, dances with the women of remote villages, treks across the frozen wasteland of the Arctic with injured soldiers and still manages hard drinking nights out at London clubs with his mates. True, it wouldn’t be done to see his older brother and second in line to the throne William doing such things but, in general terms, Harry is becoming more and more “the people’s prince!” The 27-year-old will share a stage with the likes of UN
secretary-general Ban Kimoon, who will also be honoured at the Washington event and the gala dinner at the US capital is likely to be a far cry from Prince Harry's usual haunts. The formal gala dinner is organised by the Atlantic Council, a respected global organisation that works to strengthen transatlantic cooperation and international security. Each year it recognises ‘leaders who represent the pillars of the transatlantic relationship: diplomacy, military, business, humanitarian and artistic
achievement’. Prince Harry will be receiving the award for 'distinguished humanitarian leadership' on behalf of himself and his brother, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William. The 27-year-old royal is being recognised for his efforts championing Forces charities like Walking With The Wounded, ABF The Soldiers' Charity and Help For Heroes. Through the princes' own foundation both tackle the issue of caring for disabled and wounded servicemen and women.

e most adorable pooch News anchor expecting Pudsey once again stole the show in the Britain’s Got Talent live semi-final at the weekend. Doing a performance reminiscent of Busby Barclay with all the 20’s style razzamataz the little Bichon Frise/Border Collie/ Chinese Crested Powder puff cross and (I’m not too sure who owns whom) schoolgirl Ashley Butler gave a glittering performance with their version to a tune inspired by the Oscar-winning film “The Artist”. Dancing along with Ashley, jumping through her arms, over her back, apparently rolling her over and all in perfect time to the music, this is going to be one very hard act to beat in the finals with all the judges, the audience and the voting public having fallen in love with this adorable little dog. So five “million percent” (sorry Andrea!) well deserved yeses went to these two. They will be joined in the final by teenage Welsh voice choir Only Boys Aloud, who performed the rousing hymn Gwahoddiad. Out were boyband The Mend. They
Sky News anchor Anna Botting, familiar to millions of people as the blonde newsreader, is expecting her first child and is due to give birth in four months time.
combined two pop anthems, added a rap, seemed like likeable scallywag types and had good chemistry. It was a close call, with the judges split between them and Only Boys Aloud, taking it to the public vote. Scouse plasterer Zipparah Tafari opened the show with another rendition of his gloriously daft ditty Where’s My Keys? Where’s My Phone? It might make a novelty hit (pound signs in Cowell’s eyes, possibly) but he’d gone as far as he could in the competition. The Mend and retro-soul voiced Rachel Knowland would have been better off entering the XFactor and The Voice respectively as they were a little out of their depth in the wrong sort of competition with BGT.
from XFactor judge Tulisa Contostavlos was an abject disaster as she sung her new single “Young”… frock = terrible; dancing = more like your grandma at a family do! The judges should have been able to buzz four great big “X’s” to get her off the stage. Stupidly enough, it has been announced that the final of Britain’s Got Talent is going to clash with The Voice. How daft can the people that programme the various shows slots be and, why do they think we want to enter into their petty ratings war? All they’ll have done is irritated an awful lot of viewers who would quite happily watch both shows. Why should we have to decide? Grow up planners and let us have a bash at both! by Kym Wickham

She was the Royal Television Society’s presenter of the year – currently presents Sky News at Ten, Sky News at Eleven and Sky Midnight News and it is yet to be announced whether she will give up her late night news programmes once she has become a mother to look after the child. However, a friend of hers has said: “Having a child this late in her career won’t make a difference. She’s Sky’s rising star. She presented the Royal Wedding and this year hosted London’s mayoral hustings. She’s on the up and up.” The 44-year-old who lives
in Surrey with her 45year-old partner Nick Purdue has no plans to wed saying: ‘We have talked about marriage but we’ve made no plans,' she said. 'Well, Nick has talked about it more than me.' The couple met five and a half years ago when Nick was working as a ski guide in Morzine, France, on the Swiss border. She was once sent a £550 engagement ring from a smitten fan.
Anna first joined Sky News in 1995 as a reporter, before moving into the studio to anchor the news. During the 1997 election she shadowed Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown, day-in day-out, for the whole six weeks of the campaign and was also the first journalist to arrive at Kensington Palace the day Princess Diana died.

Peter Simpson In your May 2nd edition under Stargazing (P.27), Ken Campbell in his penultimate paragraph refers to the old adage 'Red sky at night, sailors delight ...’ Now I always knew this as 'Red sky at night, shepherd's delight,
Mary Wilde I often read in your excellent newspaper articles about helping abandoned animals. Therefore, I feel I must write to you to say that I was rather amazed that on Sunday 6th May an animal charity held a fund raising event at Miraflores Golf that consisted of a HOG ROAST. Like many others down here I do, of course, support these charities that do so much to alleviate the suffering of
G. Robertson I have recently read just two of the columns by Amy Thomas, and have to say how disappointed I was with her complete lack of anything good to say about either ‘Miss Potter’ or ‘Titanic’. I found her style of denigrating everything and appearing to sneer at all those involved with either film quite nauseating. I have seen both films and whilst ‘Titanicastiyiii’` was certainly a romantic fictional story about two people who could possibly have been passengers on the ill-fated ship, if Ms Thomas had listened to some of the
Estepona red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning’. Which is correct?
Editor says: I was brought up with the “shepherds” version myself and was an inland girl
whereas my friend was brought up on the “sailor’s” version and lived on the coast so I think it’s one of those that whatever suits works. Anybody else got any ideas on this one?
Mijas Costa animals. But I found a hog roast somewhat incongruous. Did the organisers really think that this particular animal couldn't feel terror and pain? I know that most people eat meat and the choice is usually cultural. Hindus don't eat cows, in Indonesia and China you may be fed roast dog or cat – many countries serve horse meat and Jews and Muslims won't eat pig. But the choice of a hog roast for this event is
such a visual display of an animal that has recently suffered a miserable death in an abattoire – that I find the hypocrisy astounding. Cats and dogs may be cute and fluffy but it seems that some people just don't get the big picture. I shall continue to help with the relief of suffering to all animals.
by email documentary programmes recently which have been aired frequently in respect of the 100th anniversary of the tragedy, she would have seen and heard many true stories which were similar. With reference to ‘Miss Potter – maybe Ms Thomas was not as lucky, as I was, to have owned and read time and again the stories with which Beatrix Potter has been able to enchant several generations of children. Surely Ms. Thomas must realise these animations were all part of Miss Potter’s imagination and to any lover of her books from childhood, would surely have brought a warmth of feeling and wonderful memories of growing up (as did Miss Potter!) with such enchanting characters set in such a beautiful part of the world? Come on Ms. Thomas where is YOUR imagination and warmth of feeling?

In spite of today’s hard technological world, with it`s constant pressure and stress, and the violence of many films shown both on TV and in the cinema with swearing and foul language used in common speech ... this was a beautiful, though sometimes sad retelling of a woman who was able to lose herself in a world where her imagination could relieve herself from the pressures her own life put upon her and this film enables it’s viewers to do likewise. A real tonic and a breath of fresh air...I would see it again and again – highly recommended. Renee Zellwegger was perfect as Miss Potter and is to be congratulated on her English accent which was totally convincing.
Amy Thomas says: I am just giving my opinion of films and there will always be differing likes and dislikes according to taste. Personally, the films you mentioned weren’t to my taste but I am heartened that you enjoyed them and appreciate your opinion. As for Americans using an English accent in films, I would point you to Jennifer Ehle, born in North Carolina who played Elizabeth Bennet in the BBC’s version of Pride and Prejudice – it was superb. If you would like to recommend my viewing a film and then reviewing it in my column, please let me know the title.

Messier’s Catalogue In 1771, a French astronomer and comet hunter became frustrated at trying to identify distant comets so he came up with a great idea.
C
harles Messier first became interested in astronomy in around 1744 when a spectacular comet was seen in the skies. In 1751 he joined the French navy as a working astronomer and began making very detailed observations of the night sky. His first observation was of the transit of Mercury as it crossed the face of the Sun on 6thMay 1753, but his real passion was searching for comets.
C
W
hen we think of comets we always imagine an object with a huge tail streaming behind it, but a comet’s tail only materialises when it is closer to the Sun. When comets are further out in space past Jupiter or Saturn then they don’t have a tail and only appear as a slightly fuzzy ball. Messier was hard at work scanning for comets but was constantly finding lots of ‘fuzzy balls’ that were galaxies, nebulas or star clusters, and trying to determine what was a comet and which was a ‘fuzzy ball’ was taking up very valuable telescope time.
S
o between 1774 and 1781 Charles Messier began making a catalogue of any objects in the sky that were not comets. In all he listed 110 objects with such accuracy and in so much detail that when his catalogue was published in 1784 it became an overnight sensation amongst astronomers and is still in use today. All galaxies, nebulas and star groups that can be seen with a modest sized telescope will have the prefix M for Messier. Of course, with modern, extremely powerful telescopes and even the Hubble Space Telescope many thousands of other objects have been discovered and are listed as NGC or New General Catalogue. But the Messier catalogue is a must for all amateur astronomers, and working your way through all 110 objects in a Messier marathon is always on an astronomers ‘list of things to do’.
T
he first object on the list is M1 the Crab Nebula. This is the remains of a star that exploded and was observed by the Chinese in AD 1054. It was so bright that it was even visible for a few days in daylight. Its ghostly remains can be found in the constellation of Taurus the Bull. M13 is the Great Globular Cluster of thousands of stars about 22,000 light years away from us in the constellation of Hercules and is always a favourite of mine to show to people through my telescope.
M
ost of the objects are inside our own galaxy but M31 is the Andromeda galaxy two and a half million light years away and is the most distant object visible to the naked eye. M42 is the famous Orion nebula, a huge cloud of gas
where new stars are being born. The Orion nebula can easily be seen with the naked eye hanging where Orion’s sword would be below his belt. Another visible to the naked eye is M45 the Pleiades cluster, most people can make out the seven sisters that form the Pleiades but with a telescope hundreds of baby stars can be seen along with the dust cloud surrounding them.
M
57 is another favourite of mine; this is the Ring Nebula in Lyra the harp. Through a telescope M57 looks like a perfectly round doughnut and is another remnant of a long dead star. Many thousands of years ago the star expanded millions of miles out into space and then collapsed down onto itself leaving its outer shell like a smoke ring behind.
M
essier did all of his observations from central Europe so unfortunately there are many more objects that are only visible from the Southern hemisphere that should be on his catalogue but have been ignored. The New General Catalogue includes all objects visible in both the north and south hemispheres and to date lists 7,840 objects.
C
harles Messier died in Paris in 1817 aged 86 but his catalogue lives on today, an asteroid and even a crater on the Moon have been named after him. But as a comet hunter he was a bit of a failure, he only discovered 13 new comets!

Force India handed £650,000 legal bill Force India have been ordered by a High Court judge to pay £650,000 legal costs to the Caterham team and their chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne. The amount is on top of the £700,000 in fees Force India had to pay Italian race-car design company Aerolab over the same case in March. The verdict is to do with a dispute over intellectual property involving Force India, Aerolab and Caterham. Force India have to pay the £650,000 in costs within 14 days.

MG Rover shock Former workers at MG Rover are to receive compensation of just £3 each after fighting a sevenyear battle for redundancy payments. Campaigners fighting for more money for the 6,500 employees who lost their jobs following the collapse of Britain's last major car maker were told of the tiny payout this week. When the firm collapsed in 2005, workers were told by the company's owners that millions of pounds would be available for them in a compensation fund. The fund has instead just £22,000 which needs to be shared among the thousands of workers whose jobs were lost.

Forward Racing's Moto2 rider Alex de Angelis has confirmed he will replace the team's injured MotoGP star Colin Edwards during Monday's test session at Estoril. de Angelis, a former MotoGP podium finisher, has ridden the Suter-BMW CRT machine once before, during a private test at the end of April. Valentino Rossi felt that seventh place in Sunday's Portuguese MotoGP marked his and Ducati's 'current potential' and they must now work to try and raise the limit. Tenth and ninth in the opening 2012 rounds, Rossi quickly rose from ninth on the grid to seventh, a position he maintained to the chequered flag.
The 545bhp Nissan Juke-R will be entering “very limited run” production, the company has confirmed. Nissan has taken the decision following a positive reception to the previously one-off concept in a viral internet marketing campaign. So far, Nissan has received three orders for Juke-Rs, two alone from a “high-profile and wellrespected member of Dubai society”. It was in Dubai where the Juke-R concept was first shown in January, and where a series of videos of the JukeR outsprinting a Lamborghini Gallardo, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and Ferrari 458 Italia on closed roads were filmed.

special program run by Melbourne Chevrolet dealer Jim Rathman. In a ploy to boost sales, Rathman would offer astronauts a special oneyear lease deal on Corvettes so they would always be seen behind the wheel of the latest model.

It is the Juke-R’s performance in these videos that has piqued interest in the car, particularly in the Arab state. The Juke’s marketing manager, Gareth Dunsmore, said “people were making offers for the original on the street”. “With such a strong reaction, and with three genuine offers on the table, we decided we had to make the concept a reality,” he added. The Juke-R concept used running gear from a 2010spec Nissan GT-R. For production, it has been upgraded to use the latest all-wheel drive 2012 GT-R running gear. Power comes from a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V6 with a mighty
545bhp. The Juke-R is good for a 160mph top speed, and should be able to shave a tenth or two off the 478bhp Juke-R concept’s 0-62mph time. Nissan is to build the cars upon request and orders can only be placed in the next four weeks. No price has been confirmed by Nissan, but it’s likely to be a substantial six-figure sum.

Cavendish takes stage two but crashes the next day The TeamSky rider was led out for the sprint by Geraint Thomas, who himself had produced a superb ride to take second place behind Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing) in the individual time trial which opened the Giro d'Italia. Thomas, who has spent much of the season on the track and was part of the Team GB team pursuit squad which smashed the world record in winning gold at the recent World Championships in Australia, set a fastest intermediate time of 5:14 after 4.5km which was to stand for the rest of the day. He crossed the finish line in 10:35 but was only afforded a brief stay at the head of affairs as Phinney, who had set off four minutes after him, subsequently produced a power-packed display on the long drag to the line to stop the clock in 10:26.
Back to stage two and at the end of the 206 kilometres route around the Danish city of Herning the Team Sky rider was brilliantly led out by Geraint Thomas before moving alongside Matthew Goss (Orica-GreenEDGE) and accelerating past his former team-mate on the drag to the line for a clearcut triumph, Geoffrey Soupe (FDJ-Big Mat) taking third. There was drama in
behind when Theo Bos (Rabobank) crashed on the final corner, careering into Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) and halting a large proportion of the peloton. It was Cavendish's eighth individual stage victory at the Giro, his fifth success of the campaign and his first since the birth of his first child last month. The triumph saw him move to the top of the points

standings, claiming the red jersey which had been sported by Thomas on behalf of Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing), the winner of the opening time trial. A chaotic finish to the third stage of the Giro d'Italia saw both world champion Mark Cavendish and race leader Taylor Phinney involved in a highspeed pile up. Team Sky's Cavendish was just launching his bid for backto-back wins at the end of the 190km route when Androni Giocattoli rider Roberto Ferrari appeared to move out sharply from the left. Cavendish could do nothing to prevent his front wheel being taken from beneath him as he crashed to the road but thankfully he was able to get back on his feet and carry his bike across the line. Ronnie O'Sullivan said he would follow through with his threat to retire unless snooker boss Barry Hearn stopped "blackmailing" the sport's players. O'Sullivan, who beat Ali Carter 18-11 to win his fourth world title, will assess his options after a sabbatical. "There's a bit more left in the tank but it's up to certain people to do the right thing and stop trying to blackmail players," said O'Sullivan. "I'm not going to hang around for two more years for things to become fair." Talking about the schedule, Hearn said last week: "It's all part of being a professional and they've got to get used to it. I couldn't have less sympathy." But O'Sullivan, who at 36 years and five months is the oldest player to win the world title since his former mentor Ray Reardon in 1978, is unhappy with World
Snooker chairman Hearn's revamped 50-week, 27event tour, which will take full effect next year. The Essex player said the rigours of the extra workload led to him falling ill last December and that he had decided to put his family first. "Part of me still wants to play but I was that ill trying to keep up with the schedule, getting letters from World Snooker, and I'm not prepared to put myself under that stress," said O'Sullivan. "I know there's a big responsibility to promote the game and I'd play in any tournament if it was physically possible.”

Malaga throw it away again Atlético Madrid 2 - 1 Malaga Malaga fans were hopeful after Eliseu’s stunning goal
After the midweek defeat away to Barcelona losing 41, results had left Malaga with the knowledge that Europa league football was a certainty and now a win would secure Champions league qualification for Malaga. Malaga started well and within four minutes Isco should have put Malaga one
up, Courtois saving well for Atlético. Rondon spurned two great chances, heading over from a Joaquin cross and later scuffing a shot wide. Falcao missed a sitter for Atlético but it was Malaga who went in front, Eliseu seized on a loose ball to smash the ball home from 35 yards. After the break Atlético
looked a different side and created chances aplenty. Adrian looked dangerous and nearly scored after rounding Kameni. Then the inevitable happened, in the 69th minute Atlético drew level after Kameni could only punch a cornered ball to the feet of Koke, who volleyed into the back of the Malaga net. Ten minutes later it went from bad to worse and Adrian latched
on to a route one clearance to calmly slot home to give Atlético the victory. Malaga had a goal ruled out by the officials close to the end of the game. Now only a win next weekend at home to Sporting Gijon will guarantee Malaga a place in the Champions League.

McIlroy congratulates Fowler while DA Points looks on
The duo tied at 14 under with DA Points and headed into a sudden-death playoff for the Wells Fargo Championship. American Fowler, the world number 39, took the title after producing a superb approach shot at the first extra hole. McIlroy's second-place finish was enough for him to leapfrog Luke Donald at the top of the world rankings. "It's a little consolation," said the 23-year-old Northern Irishman. "I would rather win the tournament, but it's good. "I want to try to play well for the next few weeks and solidify my spot at number one." Fowler, also 23, was making his 67th PGA Tour start since turning professional in 2009. He needed just one hole to win the play-off – sinking a four-foot putt to birdie the 18th hole, while McIlroy and Points could only par.

I definitely respect him as a player, and I feel he respects me.” "I've had a lot of fun playing against him." Fowler carded the best final round of the trio, a three-under 69, but it was not the best of the day. That honour went to Englishman Lee Westwood. The world number three was clubhouse leader for much of the afternoon after firing a fine six-under-par round of 66 to reach 11 under.

Francesco Molinari wins Spanish Open with final round of 65
Hammers on track
Francesco Molinari won his third European Tour title by taking the Spanish Open in Seville. The Italian began his final round four shots behind overnight leader Simon Dyson, who got off to a flying start with birdies on his first two holes. But the Englishman faded badly, finishing 15th, as Molinari completed the tournament's best round of 65. Alejandro Canizares, Soren Kjeldsen and Pablo Larrazabal tied for second, three behind Molinari's eight-under total. Dyson's fantastic start to the final day at the Reale Club saw him first sink an 18-foot putt on the first and then chip in from the bunker. But he could not sustain his challenge. He twice found himself in the rough at the fifth and ended up dropping a shot there before also making bogeys at the 7th, 8th, 13th, 15th and 17th on the way to a four-over par 76.

Wigan survive while Blackburn go down Blackburn have been relegated to the Championship after losing at home to Wigan, whose Premier League status is secure for next season. Antolin Alcaraz headed the Latics to victory from a corner late on a rainy and wild night at Ewood Park. Only a win would have given Rovers a chance of avoiding the drop but, as so many times this season, the final product wasn’t there. The visitors were lively in the first half, less so in the second, but took their chance to claim a decisive win. Wigan have been having an incredible run with six wins in eight games and during that time they have been playing some great football. This win leaves them five points clear of the relegation zone with one
Garden
game left to play. Martinez can be rightly proud of his players. For Steve Kean though it is a different story entirely, hounded by fans all season long to quit. Large sections of the Ewood Park crowd chanted "Kean out!" throughout Monday's 1-0 defeat which sent Rovers down after 11 years in the top flight. The Scot has regularly been the focal point for abuse from frustrated Rovers’ fans, unhappy with his management and the way the club is being run by the owners, Indian poultry firm Venky's. But afterwards Kean said: "I am not going to walk away. I will sit down with the owners and discuss a plan on how to assemble a squad to help us bounce back up straight away."
West Ham sealed their place in the Championship play-off final by completing an emphatic semi-final victory over Cardiff. The Hammers came into the second leg with a firm grip on the tie courtesy of a 2-0 win in Wales last week. They strengthened this in the 15th minute when captain Kevin Nolan headed in from a Matt Taylor corner. They made sure of the win when Ricardo Vaz Te fired in a superb drive with Nicky Maynard adding a late third. Sam Allardyce's side remain on course to make amends for allowing automatic promotion to slip through their fingers. They are now just one game away from the Premier League, with either Birmingham or Blackpool representing the final hurdle at Wembley on Saturday, 19th May. It will be West Ham's first appearance at the national stadium since the 1981 League Cup final.
