Four Spanish children die in Qatar blaze Four Spanish children were among the 13 who died along with six adults in a fire that raged through an upscale shopping mall in Doha on Monday. The fire started around 11.30 am apparently in a children’s play area in the Villaggio Mall, a favourite with expatriates in the oilrich emirate. The Interior ministry did not immediately provide the nationalities of those killed but local news reports said no Qatari children were among the dead. Reuters said four of the children who died in the fire were from Spain, which was later confirmed by the Spanish foreign ministry, which did not give further details. In Paris, the minister in charge of French expatriates, Yamina Benguigui, said that a three-year-old French child died in the blaze. New
Zealand's Prime Minister John Key later confirmed that three of the dead children were New Zealanders, adding that they were believed to be triplets, as reported in the New Zealand Herald newspaper.
Photos posted online showed people who appeared to be injured, rescue workers clambering across a smoke-shrouded roof and a man in shirt sleeves holding a young child whose fate was not certain.
The fire at the mall raised troubling questions about the safety of even the most opulent buildings in the booming city, where shopping centres provide air-conditioned respite from the desert heat and serve as de facto town squares for expatriates and wealthy Qataris.

Even so, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has ruled out the need for a rescue package for the Spanish banking system. Bankia on Friday asked the government for €19 billion in aid on top of the €4.465 billion in preference shares lent to Bankia’s parent Banco Fiancuiero y de Ahorros (BFA) that the Orderly Bank Restructuring Fund (FROB) is already converting into common stock, which will give the government control of both BFA and Bankia. Meanwhile, concerns about the banks has pushed the risk premium to above 500 basis points.
On Monday, Rajoy repeated his call for Europe to move to guarantee the sustainability of debt issued by euro-zone members and of the currency itself, but told a news conference that: “There will be no bailout of the Spanish banking system.”
Meanwhile, the creation of euro bonds is dividing the EU. Some see them as a noble expression of European solidarity and a crucial instrument for preserving the common currency. But the Germans and quite a few others think euro bonds would be like co-signing a loan for a deadbeat brother-in-law. However, at their meeting in Brussels last week, EU leaders agreed that euro bonds deserved further study.

Retail sales fell 9.8 per cent in April compared with the same month last year – the biggest fall since the figures started being collected in 2003, according to official figures from the National Statistics Institute. The fall was much worse than had been expected, and marked the 22nd consecutive month of declining sales. It is the latest bad news from the Spanish economy, which saw the level of risk attached to its government bonds hitting record levels on Monday after it emerged on Friday that banking group Bankia was going to need a bigger bailout than had been expected.

US rights report More sabotage on targets Spanish police Madrid metro The Country Reports on Human Rights Practices compiled by the US State Department and released last week lists police torture and abuse, racial discrimination and xenophobia, illegal arrests of migrants, and gender violence as the major human rights problems in Spain. The report placed special emphasis on the mistreatment and excessive force used by police authorities during demonstrations held across the country during the past year to protest against social, education and health cuts. As regards torture or mistreatment, the report quoted 2010 statistics from the Coordinator for the Prevention of Torture, which claims that 552 complaints were filed that year – 222 against the National Police force, 79 against the Guardia Civil, and 52 against the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan regional police force. Doctor to pay maintenance after botched abortion A Palma de Mallorca judge has ordered the unnamed gynaecologist to pay a mother €150,000 in "moral damages" for botching an abortion which resulted in the birth of a boy seven months later. The judge ordered the doctor to pay a monthly maintenance of €978 until the child turns 26. The woman had sought the abortion at a clinic in April 2010 and, unaware that the procedure had failed, she returned three months later seeking another abortion, believing she was pregnant again. An ultrasound revealed she was five months pregnant and she was refused a termination because it was over the legal time limit of 14 weeks.
When the group announced the protest in a communiqué, it said passengers would not be in danger because the trains would be standing still. The protest, which took place around 8.30 am, caused a delay of around 10 minutes, affecting some 90,000 commuters. At press time, no arrests had been made. The Madrid regional

Talks between UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Tuesday were overshadowed by international revulsion at Friday's massacre in the Houla region. On Monday Mr Annan discussed his peace plan with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem and the head of the UN observer mission in Syria, Major General Robert Mood. Striking rail workers forced back to work The Canadian government has introduced legislation to force striking workers at Canadian Pacific Railway to go back to work after talks stalled over the weekend. Almost 5,000 staff took action at midnight last Wednesday, bringing traffic to a halt on 14,900 miles of track. Labour Minister, Lisa Raitt said the shutdown of Canadian Pacific's freight

Radioactive bluefin tuna discovered Pacific bluefin tuna caught off the coast of California have been found to have radioactive contamination from last year's Fukushima nuclear accident. Scientists said the fish would have picked up the pollution while swimming in Japanese waters, before then moving to the far side of the ocean. They stressed that consumers should have no health concerns about eating Californiacaught tuna from last year, because the levels of radioactivity in the fish are
well within permitted limits, and below those from other radioisotopes that occur naturally in the environment. However, they said the case illustrates how migratory species can carry pollution over vast distances. Tuna caught in the coming months will be
subjected to new tests. These animals would have spent much longer in Japanese waters and so conceivably could have a very different pollution load. The scientists also said the investigation should be extended to other migratory species that frequent Japanese waters.
Mothers to be paid via mobile The Haitian government is to begin transferring cash credits to mothers who send their children to school regularly. Each mother will receive up to $20 a month and the transfers will be made via mobile phone. The programme, called Ti Manman Cheri, or Dear Little Mother, will initially benefit 100,000 families in four of the poorest areas in
the capital, Port-au-Prince. Venezuela is providing $15m for the first phase of the programme. Other Latin American countries, such as Brazil and Mexico, have adopted schemes that provide benefits to families who keep their children in education but a Haitian government spokesman said this is the first such initiative to use
mobile phones for cash transfers. Prime minister Laurent Lamothe said the programme represented "a revolution in the country". Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere and suffered huge human and material losses when it was hit by an earthquake in 2010.

UK News Masked gunman kills 1, injures 3 A masked gunman opened fire on a group of men standing by a pool table in the Cotton Tree pub in Droylsden, Greater Manchester on Friday evening killing 23-year-old father of one, Mark Short with a gunshot to the neck and injuring three others. Two men aged 25 and 26 suffered leg wounds while a third man of 29 was injured in the lower back. Their injuries have been described by police as not life-threatening but “potentially life-changing”. It was reported by police that the premises, a small pub, was was having a “family do” – adding that although the family was known to police “it would be unfair to link their criminal history to this incident”. Greater Manchester Police Chief Superintendent Nick Adderley said that the
family party was attended by twenty or twenty-two people including the three injured men and that “it is fair to say the witnesses are being co-operative”. The gunman fled the scene in a Ford Focus car in which two other men were reportedly waiting. It was later found some six miles away in Hattersley. Four people had been arrested in connection with the incident; a 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, a 52year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of conspiring to commit murder and two further men aged 21 and 18 have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They have since been released on bail. His family and friends have described Mr Short as a man with a big heart who would help anybody.
4th plunge from hotel balcony in Mallorca Yet another Briton is in a critical condition after falling from a hotel balcony on the island of Majorca – adding to the three other Britons that have died in similar incidents on the island in recent weeks. Chantelle Serginson, 24, from Middlesborough, reportedly fell some 80 ft from the sixth floor of the Hotel Marina Barracuda, in the resort of Magaluf. She is in hospital fighting for her life after suffering multiple head and leg fractures. She was staying at the hotel with her mother, Kimberley, and younger sister. The Guardia Civil said they believe that she lost her balance and fell, landing on the first floor balcony.

UK heatwave tragedies A 25-year-old man drowned in the sea at West Wittering, West Sussex, after rescuing two children who got into difficulty while using a rubber ring on the sea at around midday on Saturday. A Sussex Police spokesman said: "The male went to the assistance of two children playing in a rubber ring some five metres from the shoreline. He managed to get the children to safety but in doing so put himself in danger which sadly resulted in him drowning." A Solent Coastguard spokesman said: "Their mother was understandably upset that this man had had this accident when he had tried to help them." He said that an ambulance crew were the first to the scene and a coastguard operation was not launched. And in another incident 15-year-old Hussain Mohammed drowned as he jumped into the River Thames from a bridge on Friday night.

According to a recent study immigrant Polish schoolchildren have been found to raise standards in classrooms in the UK. The report indicates that children of Polish parents are given a natural work ethic which makes them work harder and pay better attention in the classroom.

Victim dies detectives are now treating the "despicable" attack on 93year-old Emma Winnall as murder after she died of the injuries sustained when beaten in her own bed earlier this month. The grandmother suffered a fractured skull, broken arm and severed finger in the attack that led to her family releasing a picture of her injuries in the hope it would persuade people with information to come forward. Superintendent Richard Baker from West Midlands Police said: "This is desperately sad news… our condolences go out to Emma's family and friends. Clearly, this has now become a murder inquiry. But given the extent of Emma's injuries, combined with her age and vulnerability, this investigation has always been treated with the same level of seriousness as a murder investigation." Mrs Winnall died in the early hours of Tuesday after spending a month in hospital. A post-mortem examination will now be carried out. Supt Baker said: "We were able to speak to Mrs Winnall in hospital on two occasions in the days following her ordeal; the information she provided continues to form part of our investigation. No one capable of carrying out such a despicable attack deserves protecting – I'm asking people to look into their consciences and if they have any suspicions about who may be responsible to contact police." Feeding Britain’s future Photos may shed new light A new scheme entitled “Feeding Britain’s Future” is being backed by food giants such as Tesco, Marks and Spencer, Asda, Mars and Unilever who are offering free training and skills experience to youngsters. The scheme will see farms, factories and shops throwing open their doors to help the young jobless. And with the grocery industry as a whole
providing 3.5 million jobs in the UK, one in every seven, the training offer is not only to give first-hand insight and experience, but also help in a variety of careers. Joanne Denney-Finch the chief executive of IGD which is the think-tank behind the scheme backed by Job Centre Plus said that consultations with businesses and young people have identified where the skills gaps lie and
what the barriers to employment are and will help the young unemployed join the gainfully employed of the UK. The training will include tips on how to present yourself at interviews and businesses across Britain are being urged to offer job opportunities to young people. The scheme starts in September and will be open to 17 to 21-year-olds.
Parents of six questioned The fire that engulfed a home in Victory Road, Allenton, Derbyshire on Friday May 11th killed six children from the same family. Two people arrested shortly after the incident were released without charge but in a new twist yesterday (Tuesday) the parents of the children, Mick Philpott, 55, and his wife Mairead, 31, were detained by Derbyshire police on suspicion of murder. At a news conference Derbyshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill asked people to come forward with any
information about the fire. "Please don’t see these two arrests as the police inquiry coming to an end, this is not the case. I suspect there may still be people with crucial information who have not yet come forward to speak to us. It is absolutely vital that if you know anything you think could help us, come forward now, do not wait any longer. It is important that we find justice for these six young children." He added that the investigation would be lengthy, and urged the local community to be patient.

Photographs owned by a young sailor of the Second World War – John Spurr, onboard aircraft carrier HMS Victorious – given to his grandson, Jason Spurr, before his death, may provide some of the answers to questions surrounding the sinking of the Bismark (the famous German battleship that reportedly sank the British battle cruiser and pride of the British fleet at the time, the Hood). One picture shows a plane leaving an aircraft carrier with “First off for the Bismark” written on the back, others include a shot of aircraft lined up to take off, and the Bismark from the Victorious before its final battle. Another records a visit to the vessel from King George VI. Jason said that his grandfather told him that one of the pictures shows the moment the Bismark was destroyed. Just 115 people from a crew of 2,200 survived when the massive ship sank in 1941 in one of the most decisive naval actions of the war after the ship’s rudder was damaged in a torpedo attack which slowed the vessel. The
action allowed Royal Navy warships to intercept and then sink her. Another picture says on the back, written in pencil: “Victorious torpedo hits Bismark” showing smoke billowing from a ship on the horizon. However, history records that the Bismark was sunk on a “thick cloudy day” with no explosion. British Naval Historian Professor Andrew Lambert from the department of war studies at King’s College London, said that the photographs are a fantastic collection but doubts that HMS Victorious actually sank the Bismark adding: “If the Victorious had sunk the Bismark it would re-write the entire history of the Second World War. The
crew of the Victorious were truly heroic. They took off in the most appalling conditions. They went way beyond the call of duty and carried out a substantial blow, but they weren’t there at the end.” However, Jason Spurr remembers his grandfather telling him: “Don’t believe what you hear about the Bismark. We were there and we helped sink it.” He added: “That one photo, ‘Victorious torpedo hits Bismark’ was taken at the start of the final battle on the last day, from the Victorious, corresponding with what my grandfather said. Why the Victorious has had no mention of even being there on the last day, well, people can come to their own conclusions about that.”

Age Care event on Alzheimer’s draws visitors Fuengirola Alzheimer Family Association presented an informative session about dementia at an Age Care Association sponsored event held at the Hotel Tamisa Golf in Mijas Costa. President Francisca Labron of Alzheimer Family Association (AFA), Fuengirola, introduced the Spanish association to an interested Englishspeaking public and welfare agencies. Representatives from Age Concern of Estepona /Manilva, Internatioinal Lions Club Mijas Costa, RAFA, Royal British Legion and Carelink – along with interested people from the general public – also attended the presentation. AFA’s principal objective is: Improving the quality of life for Alzheimer patients and their family. Sra. Labron described the various phases of the disease. She explained that not all persons follow the same process; that there are mild, moderate and severe phases, and that at
times it may appear that the sufferer is getting better, although it is not possible. She spoke about how there are often stagnant periods, and how the development progresses at a different pace for each individual. Psychologist Raquel Clavijo explained some of the objectives of the therapy employed. For example, Memory Workshops which aim to stimulate mental capacity. They help the patient maintain relationships with family and friends, feel secure and keep the maximum of independence. They stimulate identity and self esteem and minimise stress. Interaction with the patient is done through cognitive stimulation with the Gradior programme. Sufferers are taken out to perform daily activities such as a cafe visit, a trip to the market, florist, etc. Birthdays, holidays and festivals are celebrated. Social Worker Angel Perez introduced the
services AFA provides. Fuengirola has the facilities of a Day Centre with social attention, memory workshops, home help service, family education, emotional support, speech and physiotherapy, legal guidance, transportation and meals. Sr. Perez explained how until recently government funds and national support have allowed AFA FuengirolaMijas Costa, to begin constructing its own complete day (and overnight) centre in Los Pacos, Fuengirola. The land was donated, the structure is built, but the funds have stopped due to our current economic crisis. The finishing touches of the interior are yet to be completed and the work schedule is determined by independent donations at this point. Age Care plans to organise a fund raiser this year to assist AFA with this. When the centre is complete, it will include a therapeutic indoor
swimming pool, an activities salon, gymnasium, psychostimulation workshop wings, physical therapy rooms, various meeting /teaching rooms, family therapy salon, two dining rooms, kitchen, hair dresser, personal grooming services and overnight sleeping accommodation for the sufferer and family when needed. AFA emphasised the importance of treating and educating the entire family of the patient with this disease. Working with a small paid staff of professionals, AFA relies on volunteers from the top down to provide help for the suffer and their carers. Until now, there has not been a strong need for AFA to provide services in English. AFA FuengirolaMijas Costa has only one English-speaking patient, who at the moment, uses the translation assistance of a SenVol volunteer. Age Care Association, who sponsored the lecture, is very interested in
coordinating the increasing needs of the English speaking community on the coast for such services with AFA, SenVol and it’s own volunteers. Singer wants to avoid jail Residents A new unity In an interview with the Europa press agency on Monday, singer Isabel Pantoja denied a report published in El Mundo newspaper the same day that she had reached an agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office, by which she will plead guilty to a charge of money laundering to avoid going to jail. Pantoja is accused of laundering money for former Marbella mayor Julian Muñoz when he gave her money to buy an apartment while she was living with him. Muñoz has been in and out of jail and the courts on a variety of
corruption charges since the Malaya corruption scandal hit the headlines five years ago. Pantoja met Muñoz when she agreed to take part in an advertising campaign pushing Marbella as a tourist destination. They started a very public affair which ended while Muñoz was serving a short jail sentence three years ago. News of the deal took Muñoz and his ex-wife Mayte Zaldívar, who is also facing charges in the same case, completely by surprise. Muñoz had said on more than one occasion that Pantoja would never plead guilty to charges
which she has consistently denied. However, the prosecutor had asked for a three-year jail sentence for her, as well as a fine of €3.68 million. The El Mundo report said she had decided to do a deal because she did not want to leave her ailing mother alone. The newspaper said that under the deal, the prosecutor will now ask for a fine of €1.5 million and only two years in jail, which Pantoja will not have to serve because she has no police record. The case comes to court in Malaga on June 28th.

The fire had started at 11 am on Saturday in nearby El Hacho and firefighters brought the blaze completely under control by 4 pm Sunday. Only four homes were slightly damaged by the fire, which destroyed five hectares of undergrowth. There were no human casualties.

Cyclist killed in hit-and-run a 51-year-old cyclist was killed when he was hit by a lorry at the San Pedro-Ronda crossroads on the a-7 last Saturday. The driver did not stop but police said he might not have realised he had hit the cyclist, given the size of his vehicle. Several passers-by who witnessed the accident had called the police but had not had time to take the lorry’s number plate. However, police said they hoped the lorry driver would come forward after reading about the accident in the press.

Junta nixes nine new golf courses A spokesman for the National Association for the Protection and Wellbeing of Animals (ANPBA) said the fine was “ridiculously low” and warned that the people of Cazalilla will carry on throwing a turkey from the bell tower, as they have been doing for decades, until the authorities decide to hit them really hard where it hurts – in their pockets – or run the risk of going to jail. He called on the Junta to reclassify this infraction of its Animal Protection Law from a “serious” one, which only carries a fine, to another level where the violator runs the risk of going to jail.
The Junta de andalucia has turned down building permit applications for nine new golf courses on the grounds that they did not meet the requisites set out in a decree four years ago for this type of complex. Six are inland – two are in Malaga province, in almogía and casarabonela; two in Sevilla province, one in cordoba province and another in granada. The three planned for the coast are Hoya Áltica, in almería; los Palmares in granada, and la Joyita golf in Barbate (cádiz). Malaga
Plastic from tomato skins Researchers at Malaga University’s Faculty of Sciences and Seville’s Institute of Material Sciences have found a way to turn tomato skins into a biodegradable plastic. The team have been working on the process since 2003 and patented it in 2010, which means any financial benefits will be divided equally between the two institutions. The Junta de andalucia gave €180,000 to subsidise the project and an international cosmetic company is interested in the plastic, which is ideal for small jars for creams, a spokesman said.

I
don’t know why I thought the King’s Cup between Barcelona and Athletic de Bilbao was going to be played last Tuesday, but it was possibly because TVE was announcing it as if it were the Second Coming at ever decreasing intervals and I ended up a bit brainwashed. What actually happened last Tuesday was that Madrid regional premier Esperanza Aguirre said – as I predicted – the match should be suspended if the Basque (Bilbao) and Catalan (Barcelona) fans whistled and booed the way they did when the two teams last contested the Cup three years ago in Valencia. During a radio interview just before we went to press, Aguirre pointed out that the King’s Cup (founded in 1902 under Alfonso XIII) was really the “Cup of Spain, having been the cup of the Second Republic, the cup of Franco and now it’s King Juan Carlos’s”. She pointed out that offending the flag or the national anthem were crimes according to the Penal Code “therefore in my opinion we should not allow it, and if it happens the game should be suspended and played behind closed gates in a stadium somewhere else”. She added: “The fans wouldn’t do it again, I’ll bet.”

hat happened was that on the night, Crown Prince Felipe turned up along with Deputy PM Soraya Saenz de Santamaria to very stoically endure 27 seconds of deafening whistling and booing, as the Catalan fans in particular flashed their regional flag all over the place. It was short because that’s the length of the anthem played when the Crown Prince stands in for the King. Interestingly, the cameras zoomed in on a fan wearing a Barcelona shirt who was waving the Spanish flag and pointing this out to a nearby policeman, who studiously ignored him. Then they got on with the game which Barcelona won 3-0.

nteresting side note: Athletic de Bilbao is called Athletic because it was formed back in 1898 by British workers from Sunderland (where I was born), Southampton and Portsmouth working at the shipyards in that city, and educated Basques who had studied civil engineering and commerce in Britain, where they developed a taste for football. In the first King’s Cup played in 1902, Athletic – as it’s usually called – beat Barcelona F.C (founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss, English and Catalan footballers). The Brits have an awful lot to answer for as far as Spanish football is concerned. However, as a “Madridista”, I’m happy to inform you that there were no Brits involved in the
Bailout blues founding of Real Madrid in 1902. Spanish football has been dominated by these three clubs ever since. But back to Esperanza Aguirre. The press fell on her like a ton of bricks. She was accused of “politicising” the game to use it to her advantage – but hang on a minute. Wasn’t it the Basque and Catalan nationalist parties who called on the fans to use the match to demand that regional teams (namely Athletic and Barcelona) play international fixtures on a level with Spain’s national team? Wasn’t that one more step towards political independence? Probably not. These people are very fluent in George Orwell’s “Newspeak” – newspeak, same words as in Oldspeak but with very different meanings (see “1984”) – so they insist it was a “cultural, historical” demand that had nothing to do with politics. Sorry, Esperanza, you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

he problem with Basque and Catalan nationalism goes way back. Using somewhat questionable historical “facts”, Basque and Catalan political leaders are always playing the independence card, which in my opinion is a bluff. They rant on about independence in the hope of screwing more benefits out of the central government in Madrid but it would be interesting to see how they would react if Madrid allowed them to hold referendums on this question. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is a Gallego whose father played a prominent role in asserting Galician nationalism, but that doesn’t appear to have infected him. I hope he’ll take Basque and Catalan nationalism by the horns while he is in office and allow referendums in those two regions to determine just how many people really want independence. I suspect the nationalist parties in both regions would do a bit of rapid backpeddling because they know that a comfortable majority would vote against it. Here, Orwell’s Newspeak also played a part. A year or so ago, some 500 Catalan municipalities held unofficial referendums on independence over a period of months. To begin with, some 20 per cent of eligible voters in several towns turned out to vote – usually 99 per cent in favour. After a few months, the percentage dropped to around eight per cent – but the “independentistas” crowed victory because the vote in favour was nearly 100 per cent. What about the 80 to 90 per cent who didn’t bother to turn out? Orwell’s Newspeak is handy for getting round that one.

e don’t need a bailout. Of course, if you believe Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy who tried to reassure the battering markets on Monday, Spain will be able to handle all its own finances. I believe him. If the government can come up with a €23billion rescue for Bankia it can surely come up with money to keep this country afloat.

ankia has been the Spanish government’s biggest nightmare; the rescue is the largest in Spanish history. There is concern about what a financial institution that gets a lot of government money will do with it. We can only hope that these bank managers won’t give themselves a nice payoff. This is what happened with the infamous María Dolores Amorós, the former general director of Caja de Ahorros del Mediterraneo (CAM), who got a generous payout from the bank when she left. Now she is seeking an additional €10 million in compensation for being dismissed from the failed lender.

overnment bank bailouts may be necessary but they should be monitored with close care. We don’t need any new manager to give themselves a hefty raise or a nice fat benefits check, especially when Bankia says it needs €23 billion to shore up the troubled lender.

hat got Bankia into this mess – besides the usual losses from the property market – is beyond belief. As Daragh Quinn, a banking analyst at Nomura in London, told The New York Times: it was a GUBU – grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecedented. How far can the Rajoy government go without extending itself? Probably not too far.

ank managers who are involved in a bailout should be held to answer many questions. They should be
ordered to face Parliament where they can be grilled and told how they can use our money. Rajoy doesn’t want to look for culprits. He has ruled out ordering Bankia managers to appear before lawmakers, at least for now. Nor will he open an investigation. Nevertheless, the Attorney General’s Office has said that it was looking into several lenders – Bankia not included – to determine if there was any funny business.
W
e have not seen the last of this banking scandal. It is only a matter of time until we are forced to deal with the reality that our government will have to step in and rescue another capsized financial institution.
When elephants rule
T
he Florida press was abuzz – or maybe even embarrassed – last week by state Governor Rick Scott’s recent visit with King Juan Carlos. In a video of his meeting with the monarch, the governor, looking much like an eager and curious boy (see the picture below), tells the king right off while extending his hand that he never shot an elephant but had certainly ridden one. Visibly taken aback and looking uncomfortable, the king just responded with a quiet “oh?” Later in the video, Scott continues his prying by asking the king how he broke his hip. “I was getting out of bed,” the king again responds quietly in Engli sh. Then the governor makes his final gaffe by telling King Juan Carlos that he needed a better story than that to explain how he broke his hip. The king’s highly controversial elephant hunt in Botswana, where he broke his hip, last month had been pretty much forgotten in the press until Scott arrived. Now the governor wants the king and Queen Sofía to come to Florida next year to help celebrate the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de León’s arrival.

Community News Santiago talk raises funds On the evening of Monday 14th May, at the Centre, Lux Mundi, Torre Del Mar, a presentation was given by Mrs. June Holland, entitled the “Route of Camino de Santiago” – “The Way of St. James”. June’s 710 kilometre walk, taking 33 days, started in the town of Roncesvalles in the Province of Navarra, passing through the cities of Pamplona, Burgos and Leon culminating at the beautiful cathedral in Santiago de Compostela which houses the tomb of the Apostle St. James. She then took part in the moving and impressive Mass, during which the Butafumeiro – a huge sensor weighing 62kg – is set in motion by eight men pulling on ropes so that the sensor travels through an enormous arc across the cathedral, from door to door. The evening started with a complimentary drink followed by a film show and talk where June explained the various experiences of
the walk, places visited, views of the cities, villages and countryside and the friends she met along the way from Canada, America and Ireland amongst many others. During the interval refreshments and drinks were served after which the friends were treated to a film entitled “The Way”, staring Michael Sheen and directed by his son Emilio Estevez, who also plays the part of his son. The story it told was very true to life and more so after June’s talk – recommended viewing by the 50 friends present. The whole presentation stressed how each person
who walks the “Camino”, along good and stony pathways, uphill and downhill, with sore and blistered feet, in all weathers, staying in “Albergues”, sharing rooms and sleeping in dormitories, takes with them their own private and personal experiences, proving the Spanish poem “Wanderer, there is no road, you make the road when you walk”. A vote of thanks was given by Gloria, the Administrator of Lux Mundi Torre del Mar and the event raised €310 to support the charitable work of the Centre.

TAPAS Murder Mystery evening I’d heard about Murder Mystery evenings but ‘Who Killed the Headmaster?’ was a first for us. The venue at Los Arcos Restaurant was impressive – a large, private and intimate area below stairs, arranged with round tables, cabaret-style – much more sociable than theatre-row seating. The eight characters – staff employed at an English private school in 1937 – were introduced individually by the narrator who gave a hilarious performance as she became more and more inebriated as the evening progressed, surreptitiously sipping wine in the wings. The First Act was full of humour and intrigue, supplying us with numerous clues (and red herrings!) as to the identity of the Headmaster’s murderer. In Act Three Hercule Poirot, in his inimitable style, proceeded to point out the obvious (ah, yes, of
course!) and eventually exposed the culprit and his accomplice. All cast members were ideally matched to their roles and the standard of acting was superb. The winning team was announced and a prize awarded – we almost got it right! Phone still not working A Diamond of For “technical reasons" the 902 102 112 Spanish national “Denuncia” (police report) by telephone service is still out of order. Until its breakdown, one of the benefits of this telephone service was that it could be used by tourists and foreign residents to report certain crimes and the loss or theft of a passport in English or one of several other European languages. Once reported the report would have automatically been translated into Spanish and could have been collected from the caller’s nearest national
police station. An official police report is usually necessary in order to apply for a replacement lost passport or an emergency travel document. Anyone finding themselves in this predicament must now make the obligatory police report at an actual national police or Guardia Civil station. A list of all Spanish national police stations (Comisarías) where the “denuncia” can be made, is available on the web at www.policia.es under denuncias.

On Friday 1st June the Mijas La Cala Lions will be marking the Queen's Diamond Jubilee with an afternoon celebration at the fabulous Mijas Playa restaurant in La Cala. It will be a fun afternoon – 2.00pm to 5.00pm – with proceeds to three childrens' charities that the club supports. The Alfarnate Cherry Festival is to be held on Thursday June 21st on the Sports Ground, where a huge tent is erected, stalls are set up and producers of products from the area – including cherries of course – offer their products at affordable prices. Tasting is free, plus about 1600kg of cherries that are given away. This tradition that started in 2006, has increased in popularity ever since. The festival starts at 11 a.m. continuing into the afternoon, with performances of music and local folklore dancing to entertain you. Seating for several hundred is provided. The Royal British Legion recently held their National Conference in Scarborough with just under 500 members attending, nine of whom were from Spain South either as Branch Delegates or guests. And the Branch Standard of Fuengirola was amongst the 59 Branch and County Standards which were on parade throughout the weekend.

Star backs initiative The initiative to tackle sexual violence in war zones is being set up by the British government and has the backing of public figures, including United Nations special envoy and actress Angelina Jolie. A special event will take place to launch the initiative and Ms Jolie is expected to give her support prior to the screening of her new film, In the Land Of Blood and Honey – a love story set in the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

Considering that it is directed by Ridley Scott, it could be pretty good. Set on Earth in 2058, an archaeological dig in Africa reveal alien artifacts that suggest humans were genetically engineered by an advanced alien race (space jockeys). These “alien gods” also terraformed Earth in order to make it habitable for
their human creations. Amongst finds are coordinates to the alien gods’ home-world, to Paradise. Months later, the Weyland Corp launch the spaceship Prometheus and its crew into deep space to make first contact. A few years later the Prometheus enters the Zeta Riticuli star system. Humans are greeted by their makers, then transported further into space to a scary yet
also ruthless conquerors, destroyers of worlds who will not accept humans as equals. They unleash on the escaping human crew their favourite bioweapon, a creature used to “clean up” worlds before colonisation. But something goes wrong in the process and humans manage to turn the bioweapon against their makers. Giving birth to a smarter, nastier, bigger breed of gut-eating creatures.

The Artist is a love letter and homage to classic blackand-white silent films. The film is enormously likable and is anchored by a charming performance from Jean Dujardin, as silent movie star George Valentin. In late-1920s Hollywood, as Valentin wonders if the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion, he makes an intense connection with Peppy Miller, a young dancer set for a big break. The Artist tells the engaging story with humour, melodrama, romance, and – most importantly – silence. As wonderful as the performances by Dujardin
Sam Worthington (Avatar) plays Nick Cassidy, a man who has purportedly been convicted of a crime he did not commit – the theft of a huge diamond belonging to diamond broker David Englander (Ed Harris, The Rock). Having escaped from custody, he checks into a hotel, then walks out on to the ledge, attracting attention from the street. and Bérénice Bejo (Miller) are, the real star of The Artist is cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman. Visually, the film is stunning. Crisp and beautifully contrasted. And of course not forgetting Uggie the dog..
As the police swarm his room and try to talk him down, it becomes clear this is no straight-forward suicide. There isn't a single finger-print in the room and the name is a fake. As police wrestle to figure out his motives, he struggles to keep the public-eye solely
on him. But will this outrageous plan come to fruition? As hostage negotiator Lydia Mercer tries to talk him down she discovers that Cassidy was convicted for his part in a multimillion dollar diamond robbery.

Europe has had a rough year, what with the Norwegian massacre, the Eurozone crisis, etc – and this weekend Europe’s eardrums were put to the ultimate punishment, the Eurovision Song Contest. know that this is no movie Iweek spotlight, however this it was a big TV event, so I’m going to make a thing about it – here goes! ince 1956 the Eurovision Sus Song Contest has kept greatly amused, and though most Eurovision acts do their little song and dance and then are never heard of again, some are actually good and are still around today. The funny thing is Spain and England have very different attitudes towards the Eurovision song contest, Spain take it really seriouslyeven though they have only had two wins, in 1968 (Massiel – “La, La, La”) and 1969 (Salomé – “Vivo Cantando”). In 1969, there were four winners at Eurovision, Spain, England, France and Holland. Who could forget little Lulu with her “Boom-bang-a-bang” performance”? The weird thing is, even though the UK have had twice as many wins than Spain, their last win was rather forgettable. In the 60s, 70s and 80s everyone remembered the songs, but not anymore. Any entries from the 90s to date, no one remembers – probably, because of shows like the X-Factor and Britain´s Got Talent, no one cares about the Eurovision entry.
Spanish make sure that even if they didn´t win Eurovision, then their entry will be number one in Spain, because they believe it was a brilliant song. Whenever you´re at the feria and some 60s sounding song is playing, it´s probably an old Eurovision entry. Would you believe that Julio Iglesias entered Eurovision in 1970? Azucar Moreno, Sergio Dalma, David Civera, even Las Ketchup have had a go. Pastora Soler, who represented Spain this year, is quite famous (in Spain), and her entry will no doubt make it into the charts. ow, let´s talk about this N year – I personally wanted either Jedward or the Russian grannies to win, so you can imagine my upset. Sweden’s entry by Loreen won by a landslide, but I can´t help but feel like I know this song from somewhere. Many people have debated this on the web, and so far, her “Euphoria” is a mix of Rihanna´s “We Fell In Love”, Katy Perry´s “Firework”, Britney Spear´s “Till the Word Ends” and One Direction´s “Stole My Heart”. All in all, it´s a pretty catchy tune, however I seriously doubt that Loreen will have the same success as ABBA. f you fancy a good little ISweden´s giggle, check out winner from 1991, Carola. OMG! The choreography is hilarious, I´m sure there were better songs that year, but it must have won on entertainment value. Look for it on youtube, believe me, it will have you in stitches.

Impossible Pie Ingredients: 4 eggs 2oz margarine 8oz caster sugar 2oz flour 75 gr coconut 475ml milk 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
Directions Heat oven to 180c/350f/Gas 4 Place all ingredients in blender and mix for 1 minute. Pour into a well greased 10" round flan case or similar. Bake for 1 hour. If necessary, cover with tin foil during cooking in order to stop the top
of the pie from burning. This pie should end up with coconut on the top, egg custard in the middle and a pastry like bottom. Enjoy with cream or ice cream.

Mission to banish ‘diet brain’ The expression was coined to describe a phenomenon experienced by as many as six in 10 women in the UK. In an effort to banish “diet brain” The New Atkins Diet questioned some 2,000 women about how they felt when they dieted and whether their mental or physical health had been affected by losing weight. The condition causes dieters to experience mood swings, anxiety and forgetfulness with physical symptoms including nausea and tiredness. Half the women surveyed admitted experiencing diet brain and a quarter said that it had affected their performance at work. This was even higher for women under the age of 25. New Atkins Diet chief nutritionist Linda O’Byrne said diet brain is caused by losing weight unhealthily, and warned that it could be putting not just their health at risk, but also their relationships and jobs as they become forgetful and
irritable. She said: “If you find yourself suffering from ‘diet brain’ then the reality is that you are not slimming down correctly and you need to take action to alter the situation.” The survey gives an idea of the miserable obsession people still have to be thinner, to compete with friends and mimic celebrities – despite attempts by the government and the media to widen the parameters of female body image.
However, the other side of the coin is that people’s waistlines are still and thus expanding contributing to serious medical problems. To be healthy, many of us need to shift a few pounds. O’Bryne said: “Nobody on a diet should feel hungry, that is not how a healthy diet works. Whatever your motivation for losing weight we encourage a sensible approach that will leave you feeling positive and happy, rather than miserable and hungry.”
Breakthrough in search for male pill Researchers at the Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh have identified a gene critical for the production of healthy sperm which may make it possible to develop a new male contraceptive pill. Experiments in mice found that the gene, Katnal1, was vital for the final stages of making sperm. The researchers were investigating the causes of male infertility when they randomly altered the genetic code of mice to see which became infertile. They then traced the mutations which led to infertility, which led them to Katnal1. It contains the blueprints for a protein which is important in cells which support the development of sperm. Without the protein, sperm do not fully form and the body disposes of them. The researchers hope they will be able to perform a similar trick in humans to stop sperm
New walk helps joints People with joint injuries or arthritis in their lower body are finding that walking with poles – also known as Nordic walking – helps to minimise some of the load placed on the joints. This is because landing with the pole first before each foot touches the ground helps absorb some of the landing impact – and this can make walking feel easier. Walking with poles is a better option than using a walker or a cane because the torso is kept upright and symmetrical – people using a walker slump forward; those using a cane tend to lean to one side. Nordic walking not only helps support their weight, but the poles can be used
to propel the body forward. Poles that have straps around the gripping end can also help people with arthritis in their hands even though there is still some gripping involved. It also adds a calorie-burning boost to a typical walking workout by helping you move faster, which helps you burn more calories. Studies have found anywhere from an 8 per cent to 20 per cent increase in calorie burn from walking with poles compared to walking without them. Nordic walking is a learned technique and good makes of poles come with a home-coaching kit. They can be obtained at most sporting goods stores and are generally sized
without developing, causing lasting damage. Experts in male diseases and conditions said there was "certainly a need" for a non-hormonal contraceptive for men and that this had been a "Holy Grail" of research for many years. They said the gene described by the research
group in Edinburgh sounded like an exciting new possible target for a new male contraceptive, and could also shed light on why some men are subfertile and why their sperm does not work properly. Contraception in men is largely down to condoms or a vasectomy.

e Eurovision Song Contest … and a worthy winner for once was announced - but Jedward were pretty good too So, the question is, when is the UK going to give up on the Eurovision Song Contest? Poor old Englebert Humperdink’s ballad “Love Will Set You Free” only managed to come one off the bottom of the votes after opening the show at the Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Saturday. The programme is thought to have been watched by over 100 million viewers throughout Europe but not many saw fit to vote for poor old Englebert, 76 – even though he reportedly has quite a following in eastern Europe. His last UK top ten hit was 42 years ago. Recent years have seen
blatant tactical voting between countries from the Eastern block and also between countries with high levels of trade between them. Sweden’s Loreen with her performance of “Euphoria” (very Kate Bush-esque didn’t you think?) won with 372 points. Also in the competition were Irish pop duo Jedward wearing identical metallic suits performing “Waterline” that saw them hit from above by a deluge of water killing off their famous high hairdo’s – they looked ridiculously normal with flat hair – they ended up in 19th position, and this was after coming a respectable eighth last year
with “Lipstick”! Coming second in the competition were a bunch of six Russian grannies called Buranovskiye Babushki . Britain has not won the competition for a long time and, let’s face it, in recent years have come nowhere even close to winning, not since Katrina and The Waves sang “Love Shine A Light” in 1997. So, better to give it up as a bad job with no hope of even coming close to winning no matter who we put on the stage, or give it one last go?

e 2012 BAFTA Awards last Sunday Bond, 007 The Baftas were awarded to those deserving few last weekend, but what is the story behind the coveted mask? The iconic BAFTA mask, the model for the cast, pictured right, was designed in 1955 by US sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe and has become an internationally-recognised symbol of excellence in the art forms of the moving image. In 1955, a trophy mask was commissioned by Andrew Miller-Jones of the then Guild of Television Producers. Cunliffe originally modelled the mask in Plasticine, from which the casting moulds were made (as pictured above, right) , and though based on the traditional concept of the theatrical tragicomic mask, it is more complex than its immediate front facial appearance suggests. The hollow reverse of the mask bears an electronic symbol around one eye and a screen
symbol around the other, linking dramatic production and television technology, and the full intention of Mitzi's original design included a revolving support to allow the mask to be turned and viewed easily from either side.
The Guild merged with the British Film Society in 1958 to become the Society of Film and Television Arts. The SFTA later became the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 1976, and presented one of the first BAFTA masks to Sir Charles Chaplin who became an Academy Fellow that year. Cunliffe's distinct design is now a symbol recognised worldwide. Mitzi Cunliffe passed away on 30th December 2006 in Oxford, England.

The award for the Best Reality and Constructed Factual Show went to The Young Apprentice with Alan Sugar, 65, saying he felt “a bit of a fraud” for picking up the award and praising the “real heroes” who made the show. Dr Who and Sherlock Holmes (aka Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch) presented the Special Award to the writer of the two series Steven Moffat who said that, whatever award he might get in the future, nothing will ever top his
BAFTA. Moffat was described by Matt Smith as “brilliantly cantankerous”.
The Single Documentary Award went to Terry Pratchett for his documentary Choosing to Die. Sir Terry, 64, who himself is suffering from Alzheimer’s, followed a couple of people on their journey towards choosing to be euthanased at a clinic in Switzerland rather than coping with their degenerative diseases any longer. The film showed one of the two as he took the poison that killed him. Sir Terry thanked the BBC “for allowing us to tackle this rather strange subject for a documentary”. Rolf Harris, 82, received the top honour of a Fellowship.
The trailer of new Bond film Skyfall has been released and it makes it look like a total winner of a movie. Once again Daniel Craig plays the central role of Bond, James Bond. And he has got to be the best 007 since the original Sean Connery – with the right amount of attitude without trying to make it a comedy as it had become when Roger Moore played the iconic secret agent. The film is directed by Oscar winner Sam Mendes. It would appear from the trailer that “Skyfall” is a word that sends 007 off into action. Judy Dench reprises her role as M.

Fred, a Gibraltarian I would like to refer to your issue no 176, dated 23rd May. Your front page photograph depicts a false impression to your readers in that the vehicles shown are those parked in the area just before the frontier which is used for parking by people either working or visiting Gibraltar, this area also has parking meters. It is not the queue coming into Gibraltar. I suppose whoever used this photo it’s because there is a sign depicting the word Gibraltar. I object to people who drink too much and either get loud and belligerent or plain insulting to everyone around them.
Editor says: I went down to Gibraltar for the day on Saturday May 19th and was pretty much straight in and straight out so I guess it depends on the time and the day you decide to go as it always has. Sometimes the queues to get in are horrendous but you can get out quickly, sometimes it takes an age to get out and you can be in a queue to the other side of the runway. In the past, if the queue has been long, I have always parked outside, on the meters as you say, walked in and taken the bus to where I wanted to go, then back out again to the border and simply walked across. Seems sensible to me.

Stephen Atkins Once again the thieving scumbags are back in the La Carreta area of Coin. Last Thursday an empty-of-tenants house was broken into and this time everything was taken – including the loo and all the bathroom and kitchen furniture and the copper piping for the water. These people need to be stopped, and quickly.
I have sat indoors, in restaurants and had people smoking next to me and the owners have not asked them to stop. That is clearly against the law. Personally I don’t smoke but if people want to, that’s up to them. As you say, people who get nasty when they are drunk are just as annoying but, as it stands, there is no law against it other than the landlord or landlady has the right to refuse to serve them and can ask them to leave the premises. The bottom line should be that everybody should have a duty of care to those around them and not expect others to put up with their objectionable habits, whether it be smoking, drinking, loud music or whatever they are!

Just suppose someone had come home and disturbed them. Would they have legged it out the door? Doubtful isn’t it. They must have had a van to get the stuff out of there so, would they have attacked whoever had come home and found them? Probably. So we all need to be extra vigilant of our own and neighbouring properties. If you
see a car or van in the area that isn’t familiar to you, take the registration number down and write the day and time you saw it. Write a description of it – colour, make if you can tell, and of the people in it if you see them. This way we can all help to stop this happening to our properties. We’ve already started doing it here, just follow suit.

enus is the second closest planet to the Sun following Mercury and as it is closer to the Sun than the Earth then in very rare times it is possible for Venus to pass directly across the face of the Sun in what is known as a transit.

ransits of Venus are very rare indeed and unless there will be tremendous leaps in medical science and mortality in the next 100 years then I doubt that many of us will still be around to see the next transit in December 2117.

ut Venus passes between the Earth and the Sun at least once a year so why don’t we see a transit of Venus every year?

As Venus travels half way around in its orbit and is on the far side of the Sun – so now the Sun is between Earth and Venus – it is known as a superior conjunction. But the Earth and Venus are both wobbling a little in their respective orbits and so most of the time Venus, as seen from Earth, passes either above or below the Sun during its inferior conjunction and so we don’t get to see it transit the face of the Sun. The target area of the Sun’s face is really quite small, we all think of the Sun as being a huge thing in the sky but in reality it is smaller than your little finger nail held at arm’s length.

ransits of Venus occur in pairs of two separated by eight years and then the next pair 121 years later. The last transit of Venus was on 8th June 2004 and was seen by most of Europe and the USA. Unfortunately this coming transit occurs during night time as seen from Spain and so will not be visible. People living in England may just be lucky enough to see the last stages of it as the Sun is rising on Wednesday morning 6th June.

he last pair of transits occurred in 1874 and 1882 and in the whole of history there have only been six times that it has been observed. The very first transit was predicted and observed by a very young man from my home town of Liverpool.
J
eremiah Horrocks (pictured) was originally from Liverpool but moved to
Preston Lancashire in 1639. The famed astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler had predicted a transit in 1631 and 1761 and a near miss in 1639 but the 22-year-old Jeremiah disagreed with Kepler’s calculations and calculated that a transit would occur on Sunday 4th December 1639 (24th November under the Julian calendar system that was still in use in England at that time).

he telescope had only just been invented in 1610 and used by Galileo and so this was the first time that it could be used to observe a transit. Jeremiah couldn’t predict the exact time of the transit but he was convinced that it would occur sometime on that date. Coming from a very religious family, Jeremiah was expected to attend church three times on the Sunday of the transit. He began his observations at sunrise but being December the weather was a problem and at first his view was obscured by clouds. He went to morning mass and then the sun shone brightly through the stained glass windows. No doubt praying to God for the service to end soon he then rushed home to have his sky once again clouded out. He then attended lunch time church and once again the Sun dazzled him throughout the service. Finally rushing home once more the Sun disappeared behind clouds. It was not until 3.15 in the afternoon, about half an hour before sunset, that the clouds finally dispersed and Jeremiah was able to project the image of the Sun onto a screen and spot the tiny image of Venus crossing the Sun – just as he had predicted.

Ferrari builds one-off car for Eric Clapton Ferrari has built a one-off special edition model called the SP12 EC, for Eric Clapton, the rock legend. Designed by the Centro Stile Ferrari in collaboration with Pininfarina and Ferrari's engineers in Maranello, the SP12 EC (SP for "Special Project" and EC for "Eric Clapton") is described in a press release issued by Ferrari as being "created as homage to Clapton's career and his long lasting experience as a Ferrari owner".

Luke Donald defends title Luke Donald regained his world number one status with a successful defence of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Donald overtook Rory McIlroy in the rankings with a final round 68 to beat Justin Rose and Scotland's Paul Lawrie by four shots. Donald, 34, becomes only the third player to retain the title and clinched his sixth tournament win in 15 months. Rose could not quite match his playing partner and took 70 to finish on 11 under, Lawrie the 1999 Open champion shot 66. "To defend and get back to number one is very sweet indeed," said Donald, who joins Sir Nick Faldo (198081) and Colin Montgomerie (1998-1999-2000) as the only players to make a successful defence of the European Tour's flagship event.
Donald needed only a top-eight finish to take top spot after McIlroy had missed the cut at Wentworth, and he took a two-shot lead over Rose into the final round. Justin Rose was soon three back after he

Donald beat Lee Westwood in a play-off last year to become world number one for the first time, and also went on to become the first player to win the orders of merit on both sides of the Atlantic. The Chicago-based Donald was overtaken by McIlroy when the Northern Irishman won the Honda Classic in the US in March, since when the pair have traded the top spot six times.
End of Season Rugby Fiesta On Saturday 26th May 2012, there was a fiesta of rugby at the home of Axarquia Rugby Club in VelezMalaga. The final games of the season involved the senior 1st XV team, veteran team and junior players of the Axarquia club, pitched against each other and an invitation team from Malaga Rugby Club. This was a triangular tournament with the 3 teams all playing each other. Played with great spirit and friendship, the team
from Malaga Rugby Club deservedly won against the veterans/junior team and then against the 1st XV seniors squad to win the triangular competition. In the last match there was a deciding game pitching the vets/juniors against the 1st XV team. The experience of the vets (including the ability to play after a few beers!), combined with the speed and agility of the juniors, overcame the first XV in the last few minutes of a great game to win by 4 tries to 3.
