NATIONAL NEWS - FAMOUS FOR THEIR MILITANCY
Miners' strike marred by violence The indefinite miners' strike which began officially last week has degenerated into brawls with riot police on several occasions, after miners started out peacefully occupying mines in Asturias, Castilla-Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Aragon and Andalucia. There had been scattered incidents in mines across the country for several weeks until the two main unions, the UGT (General Workers Union) and the CC.OO (Workers Commissions) called the indefinite strike last Friday to protest against cuts in government aid of 63 per cent to the sector. Most of the mines are privately owned and have been fighting a losing battle with cheaper imported coal for years. The owners say it is the high cost of each worker that makes the mines less competitive, while the miners accuse them of wanting to get out of an industry that does not
yield the high profits they want. The unions warned that if the government does not step in the mines will close down, putting thousands out of work. Last Friday the miners barricaded the A-66 motorway in Vega del Reay, near Oviedo, Asturias province. The seven unions have called for nationwide protests starting today, Wednesday, June 9th, at 6 pm, to be followed by similar protests every Tuesday and Thursday at the same time and at 12 noon on Saturdays. Asturian coal miners are famous for their militancy,

a reputation they gained in October 1934 when they occupied several towns in the province in the hope of sparking a national rebellion to bring down the Republican right-wing government. An army headed by Generals Eduardo López Ochoa and Francisco Franco finally put down the
uprising in which some 1,500 miners were killed and between 30,000 and 40,000 taken prisoner. Another 1,500 nonminers, including women and children were killed by Franco's Moroccan troops.

and not so new
By Kym Wickham A friend gave me a copy of a new cd last week and, having never heard of the singer I wasn’t expecting anything exactly spectacular – in fact, to be honest, I thought I’d play it through once and never listen to it again! However, surprise, surprise, it’s actually very good and I’ve run it through at least three times already. When I am out delivering The news on Wednesdays I’m either driving without any radio or music on or listening to something I like so this will be my next week’s cd in the car. I believe you can hear some of his stuff on youtube so have a look for neal casal and the album is called “Sweeten the distance”. It’s a good one for having on if you’re having dinner with someone you rather like too! It only came out about a month ago so, one to add to the collection. Another one I listen to was a recording done by a friend, Patricia Hytner, for her daughter’s wedding. It’s one of those that, when you hear it, makes the hairs on your arms and on the back of your neck stand on end it’s that good. It’s what is termed a crossover operatic piece called “nella Fantasia” composed by Ennio Morricone with lyrics by chiara Ferraù, and was first released by Sarah Brightman in 1998. Personally, I think Pat’s version is better but it’s not been published anywhere so have a listen to other versions of it instead if you wish. Enjoy! On a last note – it’s my birthday today!

Finance chiefs of the G7 group of industrialised nations have been holding emergency talks about the eurozone debt crisis, amid fresh worries about the eurozone's economy, underlined by figures showing that private sector activity – including in Germany – fell in May. With concern growing about Spain's economy, eurozone leaders are split over whether to launch common bonds but Germany repeated its position that fiscal union must precede eurobonds. The subject of eurobonds, which would consolidate eurozone debt and help to bring down borrowing costs, was a divisive issue at a European Union summit last month. G7 countries outside the eurozone fear Europe's failure to get to grips with its worsening financial position will drag on global recovery. Spain's banking crisis and worries that Greece may be forced to leave the euro bloc have caused panic in the financial markets in the past few weeks. And now there are fears Cyprus may be forced to join Greece, the Republic of Ireland and Portugal in
seeking a bailout. Billionaire investor George Soros told a conference in Italy over the weekend that Europe had about "three months to save the euro", but that leaders did "not understand the nature of the crisis". Many politicians, officials and economists believe that the creation of eurobonds is the way forward. And in France, Greece, Spain and elsewhere in Europe, there appears to be a backlash against austerity measures that many people complain are too severe. News of the crisis talks gave a boost to the stock market in Madrid on Tuesday while Spain's risk premium stabilised at 520 after having risen to 548 at the end of last week.
Syria on Tuesday declared as unwelcome the ambassadors of several Western states, including Spain, in what it described as a reciprocal move to last week's expulsion of top Syrian diplomats by at least 13 countries to protest against the massacre of more than 100 people, including 49 children, in the Houla area of Homs province. Turkey expelled all Syrian embassy staff. The Syrian government announced that 17 diplomats from the US, UK, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany and Canada were now considered "personae non gratae", and all Turkish diplomatic staff were also declared unwelcome. A foreign ministry statement said: "The Syrian Arab Republic still believes in the importance of dialogue based on
principles of equality and mutual respect, and we hope the countries that initiated these steps will adopt those principles, which would allow relations to return to normal again." However, foreign observers have said it will be a long time before the Western states are prepared to re-establish diplomatic ties. Many had already withdrawn their ambassadors on security grounds or for political reasons. US ambassador Robert Ford was called back to Washington in October over fears for his safety, while all British staff were embassy withdrawn in March on
security grounds. France also closed its embassy that month in protest at the "scandalous" repression of dissent by the government. On Sunday, President Bashar al-Assad in a rare visit to the country's Parliament blamed outside powers for Syria's divisions without naming any specific countries. Meanwhile, the UN has said the Syrian government has agreed to allow aid agencies to enter the four provinces that have seen the most violence. The UN estimates that one million people are in need of assistance inside Syria, and that the number will likely increase after further assessments.
On Tuesday, Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro said in a radio interview that at current borrowing rates, the financial markets were effectively shut to Spain. "The risk premium says Spain doesn't have the market door open," he said on Onda Cero radio. "The risk premium says that, as a state, we have a problem in accessing markets when we need to refinance our debt."

National News Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro announced on Friday that the country’s regional governments as a whole managed to balance their budgets in the first quarter of this year thanks to transfers from the central government. He told reporters after the regular Friday cabinet meeting: ““The regions are making a big effort to achieve their public sector deficit targets. The government’s plan has been bearing fruit since the start of the year.” The regional governments were largely responsible for Spain overshooting its deficit target for last year of six per cent of GDP by almost three percentage points. In addition, doubts about the central government’s

ability to sort out their finances were among the factors that have pushed the country’s risk premium to new highs. Montoro said the government is preparing a mechanism to ease the funding problems of the regional governments, which have been virtually cut off from the wholesale debt markets.
They are urging the central government to approve so-called hispanobonds, which would be issued by them but guaranteed by the central government. But Madrid has rejected this formula because it fears it could weaken more profligate regions’ political will to tighten their belts.

The number of people filing for unemployment benefits fell by 30,113 or 0.63% in May, compared with the previous month, the Labour Ministry announced on Monday.
The measures have proved very unpopular with unions and workers, although polls show that some 70 per cent of Spaniards realise they were necessary.
This brings the number of unemployed down to 4.71 million, after reaching a record high of 4.75 million in March.
On the other hand, the government has been forced to approve billions of euros of spending cuts and tax increases in an effort to reduce its debt levels, which have a negative impact on employment within the economy.
The unemployment rate in Spain is the highest in the eurozone at 24.3%, according to European Union figures released last week. The government has introduced a number of labour market reforms to try to reduce unemployment, which include cutting back on severance pay and restricting inflation-linked salary increases.

Bulls 2 - jobs and nationalism 0
Even though unemployment in Cáceres province is 31%, the bulls won by 242 votes to 181. Meanwhile in the Basque country, the Bildu coalition of left-wing proparties independence which governs the small town of Zestoa had decided to ask residents if they wanted to continue celebrating their annual novillada (small bulls fought by amateur bullfighters) which has been held in the town for the past 350 years. In this case, it was not a
question of money but of politics – an attempt to start suppressing bullfighting in the region, in line with the nationalist Catalan government’s ban of the “national fiesta” a year ago. But the bulls won again. Just over half the town’s 3,012 residents turned out to vote – 963 for continuing the tradition and 542 against. However, the current economic crisis is on the anti-bullfighters’ side. Bull runs and bullfights are a central part of local summer festivals across the country but town halls are slashing their budgets, causing a crisis in the bull-breeding industry. Over the past five years, the number of bullfights across the country has fallen 46 per cent – down to 1,177 bullfights last year,

Man found dead after 15 years
The anti-bullfight campaigners’ belief that interest in the national fiesta is gradually fading away took a knock over the weekend when two separate mini-referendums showed it is still alive and kicking. In Extremadura, Mayor Francisco Javier Anton decided to ask the residents of Guijo de Galisteo if the town hall should spend all of the €30,000 it normally pays for bulls for their annual fiesta or use half of it to pay local people to carry out odd jobs.

The remains of a man who was last seen alive 15 years ago have been found in his house in the village of Canizal. The skeleton of Vicente Benito, who would now be 73, was found by a nephew who broke into the house to find out what had happened to his uncle. Neighbours said they believed mr Benito, a shepherd, had gone to Portugal or moved elsewhere for work. Last year traffic on the nation’s toll roads dropped to levels not recorded since 1999, according to Public Works ministry figures released last week, as the economic crisis forces drivers to use secondary roads whenever possible. The ministry has denied reports that all of the country’s highways are to be converted into toll roads, but this may have to be done to recover the more than €3 billion owed to the government by the concessionaires who manage the toll road network

Four guilty of plot over Muhammad cartoons
The rebel Free Syrian Army has decided to ends its commitment to the nominal ceasefire, a spokesman said on Monday Maj Sami al-Kurdi told foreign correspondents that the FSA had begun attacking soldiers to "defend our people". The ceasefire was part of UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan but both sides in the conflict have been conducting operations in recent weeks more or less as though the truce no longer existed. The formation of a new opposition coalition was announced at a news conference in Turkey on Tuesday. Spokesman Khaled alOkla said the Syrian Rebel Front represented 12,000 fighters, and that it had been formed in part as a
Four men have been found guilty of planning a terrorist attack on the offices of the Jyllands-Posten newspaper in Copenhagen in revenge for the paper's publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in 2005 which caused violent protests in the Muslim world. response to Arab and international "failure" to "rein in Assad from his crimes". The developments put pressure on Mr Annan and the international community to find a way to implement Mr Annan's plan – which has universal international support. Russia and China have repeatedly opposed UNWestern backed intervention in Syria – such as the no-fly or buffer zones proposed by some Syrian rebels – and observers say there is no international "Plan B" in Syria if the Annan plan fails. Vatican bans nun's sexual ethics book The Vatican has sharply criticised a book written by a US nun and theologian on sexual ethics and has forbidden Catholic teachers to use it. The Holy See's orthodoxy office said the 2005 book – Just Love, by Sister Margaret Farley – posed "grave harm" to the
faithful. It said her ideas on masturbation, homosexual acts, homosexual unions and remarriage were in "direct contradiction" with Catholic teaching. Sister Farley said her ideas were coherent with theological tradition. The move came after a Vatican report criticised the
Leadership Conference of Women Religious, whose 1,500 members represent some 80 per cent of some 57,000 American nuns, saying that they were becoming feminist and politicised, promoting radical ideas and challenging bishops. Sister

Three days of official mourning began on Monday for more than 150 people killed when their plane crashed in the main city of Lagos. The Boeing MD-83 ploughed into a printing works and residential buildings just north of the airport on Sunday before bursting into flames, killing everyone on board. The casualties on the ground were still unknown at press time but may have been minimised because it was Sunday and the buildings were mainly empty. 100s arrested for Tiananmen anniversary China has arrested activists and put others under close surveillance to stop them from marking the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Rights campaigners said police have moved to detain and pressure activists from the capital, Beijing, to Fuzhou on the east coast and Guiyang in the far south-west, while hundreds have been rounded up in Beijing. Searches on social
media sites have also been restricted to try to prevent any reference to the 1989 events. The foreign ministry expressed "strong dissatisfaction" over a call from the US to free those still in prison for their involvement in the protests. On June 4th 1989, the army shot dead hundreds of civilians rallying for democracy. Beijing said the rally was a counter-revolutionary revolt and defends its response. The Communist
Party still prevents any public remembrance of the event. A human rights group, the Dui Hua Foundation, has estimated that fewer than a dozen activists arrested in the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown remain in jail. Hundreds were rounded up at the time. A Dui Hua spokesman said those left in jail are not students who led the protests, but people who committed arson or attacked martial law troops.

A whole weekend of fun and Britishness At 2.40pm on Sunday June 3rd 2012 the wheels on the floating belfry began to spin and the beginning of the Diamond Jubilee pageant on the River Thames in London started in appalling weather. And on Monday, a truly fab concert took place at the front of Buck House. The Queen dressed in diamond white stood together with Prince Philip throughout the whole pageant waving at the 1000 boats travelling at 4 knots to allow the peoplepowered boats such as Dragon Boats, rowing boats – although some had 18 oarsmen rowing – to keep ahead. She was accompanied on the Royal Barge, Spirit of Chartwell, by the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall before both Princes William and Harry plus Kate joined them at Albert bridge. Princess Anne travelled on a separate boat. A huge poster in black and white of the Silver jubilee was passed by the boats and there was a trumpet salute, and gun salutes. The bascules of Tower Bridge were raised as the rain fell. The Spirit of Chartwell moored as the rest of the boats passed by and the Queen was evidently delighted by the music coming from 10 music barges, that split the flotilla into 10 separate lots on the Thames, playing Handels Water Music among other classical pieces, plus music from HMS Pinafore that saw both the Duke of Edinburgh and Charles jigging along merrily. God Save The Queen was sung and the singers were absolutely drenched by the rain. A fly past was cancelled but fireworks were lit on
the top bridge of the Tower Bridge. The flotilla travelled from Putney to the Tower. And those boats whose masts were not too tall passed under all 13 central London bridges. Some of the boats had moored at their destination of Tower Bridge overnight. Bridges, balconies and towpaths were all packed with people watching the spectacle. The crowds refused to let the cold and drizzle put them off with many of them queueing for hours to get a riverside standing place. Hundreds of thousands of people travelled from all over the British Isles and from other countries, some dressed in 40s and 50s style. The British people had a jolly good, peaceful time, thoroughly enjoying the event. The flotilla was the largest ever on the Thames in modern times. The Royal Barge, Spirit of Chartwell had previously been used to transport Churchill’s coffin during his state funeral. In other areas there were street parties, tea parties and many lunches and dinners with people watching the river event unfold on big screen TVs in many venues. While the rain poured people brought their gazebos from their gardens into the streets to keep dry. Downing Street held their own street party, indoors due to the weather with the youngest guest being four years old and the oldest in their 80s. Henry VIII and Charles II both used the Thames for celebrations and the scene resembled those of Caneletto paintings. History will record it as a day when the Brits came
out and partied and the weather was incidental. In Topsham, Devon, trestle tables wound their way all around the town to try and get the most people at one table. Special guests Charles and Camilla enjoyed a street lunch party in Piccadilly. In Helmand province, rule Britannia was played on trumpets and sack races took place. Everybody came together and celebrated the Queen being on the throne for 60 years. It was clearly a day to be proud that you’re British.
Monday night´s concert A concert to celebrate the Jubilee was held just in front of the gates of Buckingham Palace, London with thousands of people lining The Mall to join in the evening’s spectacular. Opening the show, Robbie Williams begged people “Let Me Entertain You” and he certainly did. Comedian Rob Bryden welcomed everyone to the event. Robbie later came out and entertained people with his “Swing” style music with “Mac The Knife”.
performance though. Singers Jessie J and Will.i.am performed a duet, before concert organiser Gary Barlow and Cheryl Cole took to the stage for another song. Wierdest of the night had to be Jamaican model Grace Jones who sang the whole of her song Slave To The Rhythm while hoolahooping – quite a feat to do it while you’re singing but it was probably one of the oddest things most people had seen at a concert. Still, it took your mind away the fact that the song was rubbish. At the end of the four-minute performance, she let the hula-hoop fall to the floor before yelling: "We love you – happy birthday, our Queen." Now there’s one woman who can certainly multi-task with no problem at all! At the other end of the scale, veteran singer Tom Jones had all the crowd, including Prince Harry, Sophie, Duchess of Wessex (wife of Edward to those of you who have forgotten), Beatrice and Eugenie singing along and waving their flags in time to the music.
Shirley Bassey in a long flowing white gown performed Diamonds Are Forever, and later Annie Lennox in an oddly grey and silver gown together with false angel wings sang her classic “There Must Have Been An Angel” – unfortunately the angel in question forgot to take her wings with her when she left and the whole thing looked just a tad bizarre.
Unfortunately the Queen missed his performance, though he had reminded all of us that he had performed in front of the Queen many times in his early career anyway, and another of the night’s hosts Lenny Henry reminded her on her arrival by getting everyone to say “You missed Tom Jones”, I’m not at all sure she was amused!
Cliff Richard seemed to struggle his way through a couple of his classics including Congratulations and, in a pink suit was also a bit of a flop. Die hard Cliff fans were no doubt mesmerised by his
Dressed warmly in a military style cape she arrived to rapturous applause from the massive crowds and sat
betweeen Prince Charles to her left and Vice-Admiral Timothy Lawrence (Princess Anne’s husband) to her right. Elton John in sparkly pink jacket and specs bashed out “I’m Still Standing” and “Crocodile Rock” to the delight of the Royals who were singing along. Madness performed their “Our House and “It Must Be Love” from the Palace roof while Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” went down well as did “Happy Birthday” with Will.i.am on stage and his “Superstition” lyrics were changed to "Celebrate, the Diamond Jubilee". Kylie strutted her stuff in Pearly Queen costume to “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head”, “All The Lovers” and new single “Time Bomb” to the delight of everyone. Comedian Peter Kay turned up on stage in full Beefeater regalia cracking jokes about the “Q” on the front of his uniform meaning Quorn so as not to upset the vegetarians there. To round off the performances, Paul McCartney did a medley of songs with all the singers, musicians and presenters that had taken part during the evening joining together on stage for a “right Royal Knees-up.” The Queen was then
escorted to the stage by Prince Charles to light the last of more than 4,200 beacons – located across Britain and the Commonwealth – to mark her 60-year reign.
A son’s tribute Before the lighting, Prince Charles made an emotional speech to "Mummy", (which pleased the crowd enormously) and remarked how the weather had improved since the previous day. The Queen smiled and made a remark to the Duchess of Cornwall about Sunday's cold and wet weather. He added: "The only sad thing about this evening was my father could not be here, because he has taken unwell." The prince joked with the crowd and said: "If you shout loud enough he might just hear us in hospital." So a huge cheer went up and chants of “Philip, Philip, Philip” could probably have been heard in Scotland let alone the hospital around the corner. Charles then led the audience in three cheers for the monarch. Afterwards the national anthem was sung by performers and audience, Prince Charles kissed his mother's hand. A spectacular fireworks display, set to a diamond theme, was unleashed before the final beacon was lit. by Kym Wickham

Big day for new Dean St Paul’s Cathedral with their new Dean, of just 11 days, the Very Reverend David Ison held a Diamond Jubilee National Service yesterday, Tuesday, the last day of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. There was some concern over the two special chairs that had already been set out for the Queen and Prince Philip, with Philip remaining in hospital with a bladder infection, and whether another senior royal would take his place beside her or whether she would sit alone. Philip is well known as being her rock both in public and in private, but Charles sat with her. People had been queuing all night with others waiting since 4 and 5 o’clock in the morning. Among the early arrivals at the cathedral were four women from Jedburgh, a Scottish town near the English border, who displayed a large Union Flag. “We’ve been saving for three years to come here,” said Marion Kingswood, 69. “Apart from the royal wedding, there’s been nothing like it. Sixty years is
such an achievement.” Barry Dandy, 71, and his wife flew in from Sydney, Australia, to join in the celebrations. The Queen arrived at 10.30 after which she went on to Mansion House while the rest of the Royal family went on to the Guildhall. The monarch and her family were then guests at a City of London Livery Companies’ lunch at Westminster Hall. At 7.30am Tuesday morning a lone woman could be seen mopping down the steps leading to the cathedral’s West Door. The parade ground of Wellington Barracks was turned into a coach park for all the troops arriving for the celebrations. The carriage procession took place from 2.25pm following lunch at Westminster Hall. In the Mall another fun-filled day was taking place for people who had turned up from all parts of the UK and, indeed all over the commonwealth with a couple of ladies in their 70s having camped out to make sure they would be there for the celebrations. The atmosphere in London was
described as “absolutely fabulous” with a little bit of English eccentricity thrown in to add a bit of sparkle to it all. Centre stage on Tuesday was the balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace and the fly past by The Warbirds of the Second World War the Red Arrows. Also, Southampton’s Cunard’s Three Ships Jubilee celebrations took place on Tuesday – one of the largest celebrations outside London. Cunard’s Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary Two were all docked. Tens of thousands of people attended the lighting of 275 symbolic bonfires all along the South Coast on Monday night with local people delighting in the fact that they were taking part in the Jubilee celebrations. The two-minute address, recorded on Monday and broadcast at 5pm Tuesday, will also be available on the Royal Channel on YouTube, the palace said. Other than the annual Christmas Day broadcasts, the 86-year-old monarch has rarely spoken directly to the nation.

Dog attack
Two-year-old toddler Keiron Guess from Swindon was found in a neighbouring back garden suffering from facial and arm injuries after being attacked by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, one of two dogs kept by the neighbour. One of the child’s ears and part of his nose are believed to have been torn off during the attack. The child was found by his 49year-old grandfather who was also attacked. Both dogs have since been destroyed and the owner is co-operating with police, although there has been no information as to what the child was doing in the neighbouring garden at time of going to press. Police said the toddler's parents were at his bedside at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol where Keiron has been put into an induced coma following surgery.

Police said it was “Too early to draw conclusions” into the unexplained death of 15-year-old Rose Farley in Liverpool. Two teenagers, one 16-year-old from Liverpool and a 17-year-old from Everton, arrested over the suspected drug death have been released, as police awaited the results of toxicology tests. Rose Farley died in the wake of police warnings over potentially lethal 'pink ecstasy' pills. Reports have suggested that the teenager had spent the previous evening at a social club party before being taken ill and that her drink may have been spiked. This is, however, just one of a number of lines of inquiry into her death. She was taken to Alder Hey Children’s hospital but died at 5am on Saturday. More than 4,500 Facebook users have viewed a tribute page set up in her memory.

Illegal street vendors Guardia accuses Junta targeted Uniformed and plainclothes Local Police and municipal terrace inspectors in Fuengirola are implementing a special plan to keep track of illegal street vendors in an effort to stop them from purveying their wares in the town’s streets.
A council spokesman said they were harming local stores by undercutting them with their usually counterfeit goods and were “an annoyance for both residents and tourists”. He asked people to collaborate “because it is impossible to
eradicate them if people continue buying their wares”. Last year, the police seized more than 16,600 counterfeit goods: 11,569 CDs and DVDs and 5,096 fashion accessories.

In its report on the EREgate scandal in Seville, the Guardia Civil’s Central Operative Unit (UCO) has said it suspects that during the time Daniel Alberto Rivera was the Junta de Andalucia’s general director of Labour and Social Security, he removed documents that could have been used to implicate current Junta premier Jose Antonio Griñan and former premier Manuel Chaves.
A Seville judge is the investigating fraudulent use of subsidies, known as ERE, which were supposed to be allocated to cash-strapped companies to pay off workers they could not longer afford. The report said members of the Junta’s Cabinet were fully aware that the subsidies were being allocated to relatives and friends instead. One
former Junta department head is said to have spent €25,000 a month on cocaine and prostitutes and to have given his chauffeur money to buy land.
A Junta spokesman said the Guardia’s report was based on “nothing but
suppositions and not on hard evidence”.

The weather men have warned that the hot, dry wind known in Malaga province as the “terral” will be blowing for the next seven days and will up day time temperatures into the middle or high 30s, while night time temperatures will hover between 20 and 25 degrees.
For a few cents more Algeciras town councillor Paula Conesa (Partido Popular) was amazed when she received a phone call from the (Socialist) Junta de Andalucia demanding the payment of 8 cents which, she said, the Junta claims is owed for help with a programme to improve immigrant attention services. Sra Conesa described the demand as “laughable” – “the phone call probably cost more” – but said it only confirmed the “constant persecution being waged against this council since we won the local elections a year ago”. She added “things have to be very bad if the Junta is so hard up it is looking for money under stones”. In a more serious vein, the councillor responsible for taxation, Luis Ángel Fernández, said that since the last municipal elections “they’ve transferred the Tourism Office to La Linea”, which is governed by the Socialists, and the Junta “does not pay the IBI and other services we provide and has run up a debt of €6 million with us”.
Despite being a hot wind it has nothing to do with nearby North Africa. It blows in from the North Atlantic and is the result of a clash between high and low temperatures in the atmosphere over Portugal. It is also very local wind, affecting a strip of land along the Malaga coast but usually runs out of steam when it reaches Malaga city, and is rarely felt in Rincon de la Victoria just 10 kilometres away.

At the other extreme is the levante, which blows into Cadiz province from the east through the Strait of Gibraltar. This is such a bad wind – very, hot, very dry, covering everything in sand, even inside houses – that in the old days legend has it that if you killed someone after the levante had been blowing for seven days you would walk away free, because it is a wind that drives people mad.

Olive farmers squeezed by low prices instead of celebrating the biggest olive harvest in history, olive farmers are beginning to abandon their farms, as the market price halves. The region's 800 olive oil co-operatives sell 80 per cent of their product to big operators, with the result that nearly three-quarters of olive oil in Spain is sold as a white-label product for retailers to sell as own-label. But cash-strapped consumers are turning to cheaper vegetable and sunflower oils and the wholesale price of extra virgin oil is now less than half the $6,000 a tonne it fetched at its peak.

Bad Bankia
E
he Bankia mess is just beginning. Now it appears there is an overwhelming call for the Attorney General’s Office to begin investigating not only former president Rodrigo Rato, but all of the troubled lender’s former directors who reportedly left a gaping hole in the bank’s finances. And there is no good reason why prosecutors should not step in. Depending who you believe, Bankia was driven into the ground by mismanaged policies.
mboldened by the success of the nationalist parties’ appeals to fans to turn the final of the King’s Cup between Athletic de Bilbao (Basque) and Barcelona (Catalan) into a demand for independence, two members of the Navarre pro-independence party Nafarroa Bizirik, turned up on the steps of Parliament last week to claim the same for that region which, they said, had been “violently conquered” by Spain. They were accompanied by a sprinkling of members of small Basque and Catalan ultranationalist parties, who had apparently led them to believe the world’s press would be there to listen to them but it seems only the ABC turned up. In its report, ABC mentioned that there wasn’t a historian among the pathetic little group, and then proceeded to give a few more reliable facts about the roots of the independence movements in the Basque Country, Catalonia and Navarre.
I
’m going to ignore the Catalans here, because it’s the terrorist group ETA which has consistently included Navarre in its demands for independence for the Basque Country. This makes geographical sense because it would give an independent Basque Country a longer frontier with France. However, just as consistently, a majority of the people of Navarre have rejected independence from Spain in every opinion poll carried out on this issue since Franco died.
B
ecause of its topography, the region was never fully settled by the Romans, the Visigoths or the Moors. By 824, it was just another one of the many little kingdoms that made up what we call Spain today. Interestingly, the Kingdom of Navarre, which straddled the Pyrenees, ended up absorbing the Basque Country which is probably the root of the Basques’ claims to it today. It also absorbed La Rioja and parts of modern Cantabria, CastillaLeon and Aragon. And while its inhabitants were descended from the Vascon tribe that lived on the lower slopes of the Pyrenees, they were more outward looking than the Vascons further to the west who eventually became known as Basques. This small kingdom grew quite powerful and played a part in both English and French history at a time when Spain wasn’t even a gleam in the Spanish Catholic Monarchs’ eyes. However, in 1515 the part of the kingdom of Navarre that lay on the south side of Pyrenees was absorbed by the Catholic Monarchs into the newly formed Kingdom of Spain, while the part on the other side was absorbed by France.
N
avarre was allowed to keep some of its “fueros” (rights obtained through charters like our Magna Carta) and today is known as the Comunidad Foral de Navarra (Chartered Community of Navarre).
I
used to think that proportional representation was probably a fairer system than the “first past the post” method used in general elections in Britain. But my experience of Spain since I returned in 2002 has convinced me that these small nationalist or regional parties should never be allowed to participate in a nationwide election. No Spaniard outside the Basque Country ever voted for the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), which got five seats in last year’s election, or for the Catalan Convergencia y Union party, which got 16 seats. The PNV lost out last year because the Socialist government allowed a new Basque party to form – Amaiur – even though it was an open secret that it was pro-ETA and actively proindependence from Spain. As a result it captured the votes of the hardline proindependence and anti-all-things-Spanish Basques.
F
ortunately for Mariano Rajoy, he got an absolute majority of 186, otherwise right now he would be desperately trying to form alliances with small parties set on bringing down his government. They didn’t want to bring down the Zapatero government – even the devil himself was preferable to a Partido Popular government – but between them the Basque and Catalan nationalist parties, with lots of help from the Communistdominated Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) made sure that Zapatero didn’t pass any laws that didn’t suit them and to hell with the interests of the rest of the country. So we had parties representing less than three million people calling the shots for the remaining 42 million inhabitants of Spain.
T
hey’re doing their best to give Rajoy a tough time but it’s becoming increasingly obvious to even the most blinkered Spaniard that their antigovernment antics are damaging the country’s image abroad and encouraging the speculative financial markets to milk Spain for all the ill-gotten billions they can get.
I
t would be better for everyone in the country if these people were only allowed to vote in regional elections.
T
T
he government says Bankia needs some €23 million to recapitalize or otherwise it will go bust. Bankia’s shortfall, according to José Ignacio Goirigolzarri, who replaced Rato on May 9th, was due in part to some €13 billion in losses from toxic real estate loans and another €3 billion in tax deductions that couldn’t be applied. Just before he was forced to resign, Rato, who served as a former IMF director, was set to ask the government for just €9.7 billion, pledging that the money would be enough to ensure that Bankia would be able to turn a profit later this year.
R
ato’s proposal was outlined in a brochure he had planned to send out to all of Bankia’s branches so that its 10 million account holders and 20,000 employees could be aware of the situation inside of Spain’s number four lender. The brochure never made it to the branches because the government took over Bankia right before they were to be sent out. EL PAÍS this week got hold of a copy of the pamphlet, which today raises a lot of questions.
H
ow can there be such a big figure discrepancy over Bankia’s losses? And why is the Partido Popular (PP) government shunning one of its own, Rato – a former Economy minister in the past Aznar administration – making him look like the international bad boy of banking? Rato is lying low these days, reportedly preparing his ace card, waiting for a complete audit of Caja Madrid. This audit is expected to show what Caja Madrid – the savings bank which forms part of the seven-member group that came together to form Bankia, and the one which he still serves as president – is actually worth after the Rajoy g overnment’s actions to “nationalise” Bankia.
T
he study by PricewaterhouseCoopers is expected to give him enough ammunition to defend his tenure, question the government’s move and, of course, to come out fighting should prosecutors initiate an investigation.
I
t isn’t clear at this point what exactly is going on behind the Bankia scandal. But we do know that the political animal has been a key player and will continue to be the main protagonist unless the rules are changed in the way parties, unions, and other interest groups are allowed to appoint their own representatives to the boards of savings banks. This was how Rato was ushered in a few years back at Caja Madrid, igniting a big fight between then-Madrid Mayor Alberto RuizGallardón and Madrid’s feisty regional premier Esperanza Aguirre who wanted her own candidate as savings bank president.
M
ixing politics with banking is lethal, and Spaniards should have learned their lessons two decades ago with the Banesto case. Mario Conde, the flamboyant president of Banco Española de Crédito, was at the tip of the Spanish social pinnacle hob-knobbing with King Juan Carlos and Prime Minister Felipe González when the Bank of Spain found some 2.7 billion euros back then, 450,000 million pesetas – missing from Banesto. Following the central bank’s intervention in late 1993, Conde was later found to have embezzled some of the money, put on trial, convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison. To this day, he still says he was made a scapegoat.
O
f course, Bankia is only the tip of the iceberg. While the government claims to have enough cash – the required €23 billion – to shore up the ailing bank, Bankia on the domestic front is much like Spain in the European scheme of things. It is one of an uncertain number of dominoes that is ready to fall and bring down the rest of its partners in an orderly and quick fashion. Spanish banks hold some €220 billion in failed real estate loans and Bankia holds only €13 billion of those. Another scary thought for scary times.

D-Day - 6th June 1944 - e events of that fateful day to be remembered today Over the years D-Day has been the subject of many films, some good, some bad, telling the story of June 6th 1944, but what is the true history of that day? also had disagreements. Planning was affected by a lack of forces and equipment, notably landing craft, and by the need to divert resources to elsewhere, campaigns especially in the Mediterranean. During 1943, however, the Allies achieved a much more favourable strategic position in Europe. The German U-boats in the Atlantic were defeated and the Allied armies in the Mediterranean achieved increasing success, as did Soviet forces on the Eastern Front. Normandy was chosen for the landings because it was in range of fighter aircraft based in England and had open beaches that were not as well defended as those of the Pas de Calais. It also had a fairly large port (Cherbourg), and was opposite the main ports of southern England. An elaborate plan was implemented in order to
convince the Germans that the invasion would be in the Pas de Calais. The ruse worked. Although D-Day was planned for 4th/5th June 1944, bad weather caused a final delay of 24 hours. On 5th June, some 7,000 ships and other craft carrying assault troops left the invasion ports to arrive off the Normandy coast early next morning. Their target was the Bay of the Seine, from Cherbourg in the west to Le Havre in the east. However, some landing craft were lost - either swamped by the waves or hit by German fire - and others stuck on beach obstacles. On all five beaches the Allies broke through the defences by the afternoon, but not without a fight. The Americans landing on Omaha beach came closest to failure, and the foothold gained there was much smaller than planned. Nor did the British and
Canadians (fighting under British command, because Canada was a British dominion) gain all the ground they had expected by midnight. After the initial assault, more soldiers, equipment and supplies were unloaded. By the end of the day a huge number of troops - some 156,000 men - had landed. In the invasion force as a whole, around 7,000 men were killed on 6th June. The troops landed on that day included field ambulance units. Until hospitals could be set up in Normandy, landing craft were used to evacuate casualties to Britain. There were also conscientious objectors among the medical personnel of the British 6th Airborne Division. By midAugust the Germans were facing encirclement. They retreated in chaos and the Allies had taken Paris by 25th August.

On 6 June 1944, now known as D-Day in a campaign that was code-named Operation Overlord, allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy in France. This successful action signalled the beginning of the end of the Second World War: it was the first stage in the liberation of western Europe and a major step towards the defeat of Nazi Germany. Operation Overlord was a complex operation involving the land, sea and air forces of the USA, Britain, Canada and other allies. It required extensive planning and preparation, a process dogged by political and strategic arguments, plus there was always the British weather to add to the mix. Stalin, whose forces were engaging the Germans in the east, pressured the Allies to open a second front in Europe without such detailed preparation, and the Americans and British

Community News 2012 Mijas International Festival Zf!Pmf’!
Since it started in 1989 The Mijas International Festival has grown in size and popularity to become one of the local entertainment highlights of the year. A miscellany of cultures and costumes, music and dance, food and drink, the festival is a colourful celebration of the diversity of Mijas. Over 20 different countries participate – too many to mention all by name. They herald from as far a field as Vietnam to Venezuela and Bolivia to Bulgaria, each sharing a taste of their homeland. This year the weekend fun starts on Friday 8th June at 8.00 pm and on Saturday and Sunday at midday. The festival, attended by thousands, is spread throughout the village, and thanks to Club La Costa and ADIMI children’s charity, a 50 cents per ride mini train now links the three main zones. Designated Red, Green and Blue each zone has its own programme of displays,
events and highlights – for example, Red zone in the main plaza opposite the town hall has a bouncy castle, kids’ art workshop, a multitude of colourful stalls and bars offering tasty international foods, crafts and drinks and the main stage. Red zone on Friday night will host the lively African dance show from Senegal, on Saturday various acts come together for a brilliant night of Celtic entertainment and on Sunday afternoon at 6.30 there is an exciting performance of Indian Bollywood music and dance. The Marbella Rat Pack perform a Sinatra tribute in the Blue zone on Sunday and in between there are many more street parades, dancers and musicians, exhibitions, performances and workshops in each zone. The complete programme is available from the www.mijas.es website or any Mijas town hall office Tel. 952 58 9 010.

The Portillo bus company will lay on extra buses to and from Mijas, the last bus down to Fuengirola on both Saturday and Sunday night being at 1.00 am. There is the usual free “park and ride” service at the entrance to the village which can accommodate 500 plus vehicles with members of “The of the association unemployed over 40s” volunteering to keep a protective eye on the cars. Note; although there is no charge for the parking or the shuttle bus, please feel free to thank your vigilantes with a suitable gratuity. Every year an unimaginable amount of work goes into making The Mijas International Festival a success and the 24th festival is no exception, once more Mijas has ticked the box for another job well done. However, without the cooperation of so many others it would not be possible to host a festival of these proportions. With this in mind the Mayor of Mijas, Angel Nozal, Mario Bravo the councillor for the Foreign Residents Department and the department itself would sincerely like to publicly thank all concerned for their good will and efforts and invite everyone to come up to Mijas for yet another terrific International Festival. DAVID THE DOGMAN Are dogs to blame? part 5 Owner responsibilities 2 Spay or neuter your dog. Intact (non-neutered) male dogs are responsible for approximately 80 percent of fatal bites. When dogs are altered, they lose some of their territorial instincts, including a lot of their territorial aggression. Train him not to bite. Dogs will mouth, chew, and bite everything from your hands to your furniture until you teach them that it's inappropriate. If your dog is biting you, or growling at you or other family members, distract him with a quick sound, such as a clap or a sharp "ow!" Then redirect his attention to a rawhide or chew toy. And be sure to reward him when you catch him chewing on the right things. Watch your dog's behaviour. This may be the most important part of preventing your dog from biting. It's easy for owners to be in denial that their sweet, furry Fido may be a threat.
But if your dog exhibits any of the following behaviours, it's time for you to act: growling at, snapping at, or biting family members; growling or snapping at or extreme fear of strangers. If you see signs that your dog could be aggressive or dangerous, you can ask your veterinarian to refer you to a behavioural specialist or a dog trainer. While your dog is being treated for aggression, be careful with him in public. Be sure to warn strangers to use caution if they interact with him. Best to have a special pet public liability insurance. Following these directions won't guarantee that your dog won't bite, but they'll certainly make it less likely. Any dog that is well restrained and well trained can be perfectly safe, regardless of breed. The truth is, an irresponsible owner is much more dangerous than any dog. Curtis Thornton who lives in Sabanillas is just eight years old. When he visited the giant donkey breeding sanctuary near to Estepona, he fell in love with Delicia who is one of rare twins. He decided he would like to raise some money to help save this rare breed of donkey which is now almost extinct. He has a skill of mountain biking so this tough little fella decided to do a 2km bike ride up the mountain side at the back of Manilva. With mum Mandy and the family supporting his idea he has had generous sponsorship from the many friends around Sabanillas, Duquesa and also Gibraltar. He did the ride on April 28th and although rather tired at the
end of the task completed it safely. He was thrilled to be able to give to the sanctuary a total of €510. How inspiring this is to see a youngster care about the conservation of a rare breed. Needless to say Curtis has had many cuddles with his special donkey Delicia at the sanctuary. Well done Curtis you are a STAR!!!! You can visit the donkeys on Sunday mornings from 11am – 1.30pm at ANCRAA, Finca Los Pajaritos KM 164 on the coast road. Take the road opposite Hotel Las Dunas as if you were going to Urb. Would family members have time to attend the funeral, which is usually held within 48 hours? Upfront payment is usually required in the region of €4000, would this amount be readily available? Fab food & flags at La Risa Almost 80 and skydiving Sunday was a big day in the La Risa @ Lauro Golf calendar as there was a big Diamond Jubilee party. The day was a sell out success with bunting and flags everywhere and Jason Oliver singing to entertain everyone – and entertain us he certainly did! Meal choices were expertly delivered by owner Jan, her chef, Fritz and the girls and everything delivered was delicious. There were plates of paté with a fabulous sweet onion chutney, fresh salad and toast or you could have had a very large prawn cocktail. Mains were a choice of roast beef – a real
Sunday lunch favourite, of course, or a delicious chicken salad with strips of marinated chicken and La Risa’s special dressing on the salad. Sweets were a Jubilee cheesecake complete with red, white and blue decoration or fresh fruit salad. The terrace was packed with people enjoying themselves – usual for one of La Risa’s “do’s”– and we were all able to dance off just a few of the calories that we’d just eaten. Director: Adam Shankman Starring: Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin For those that aren't aware, the upcoming Rock of Ages is based on the Broadway musical filled with classic rock hits. The hugely popular ’80s-themed Broadway jukebox musical – which recently opened in the UK to extremely mixed reviews – gets the big screen treatment courtesy of ‘Bringing Down the House’ director Adam Shankman.
The film tells the story of an idealistic young rocker who comes to LA seeking stardom, and falls in with dubious music industry execs and hard-partying bad boys, while the soundtrack is composed of largely forgotten AM hits by the likes of Styx, Bon Jovi and Pat Benatar. But it’s the cast that’ll get folks talking: unknowns Diego Boneta and Julianne Hough play the romantic leads, but they’re

supported by a remarkable list of A-list talent including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, May J Blige and, perhaps inevitably, Russell Brand. Frankly, it’s hard to imagine this being anything other than a slick, ‘rock-night-on-“American Idol”’car crash, but miracles can happen. Rumour has it that has been choreographed by
Mia Michaels (So You Think You Can Dance), it should be quite a treat to see Cruise performing one of Michaels choreographies.

Based on the inspiring true story that captured the hearts of people across the world, the rescue adventure Big Miracle tells the amazing tale of a small town news reporter (John Krasinski) and a Greenpeace volunteer (Drew Barrymore) who are joined by rival world superpowers to save a family of majestic gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle. Local newsman Adam Carlson (Krasinski) can’t wait to escape the northern tip of Alaska for a bigger market. But just when the story of his career breaks, the world comes chasing it, too. Every possible unresolved emotion is swelling by the day right in step with the moon. A situation that appears to have no solution will resolve due to an inner change of feeling you have towards it. Relationships will become clearer and you will suddenly know the direction you need to be travelling in. A re-occurring theme could be telling you something important needs attention, listen and rectify, as you don’t want to lose something of deep value.
SAGITTARIUS Stay objective when sorting out something from the past, it is time to just clear it all up, tie the loose ends and let it go. Sometimes it is better not to know things ahead of time, it stops you from creating resistance, delaying the inevitable, which can only make the experience more painful. Heal the past and make way for a November 22nd - bright future - there are greater plans for you. Let your hair down at the weekend, December 21st a walk on the wild side is coming your way.

A special sense of ‘what you are here to do’ or destiny comes knocking at your door. Manifesting more of what you want and need comes easier at the moment. Your adventures are far from over. Take a cold, hard look at your finances though, know how much you are earning and where it is being spent. There could be a major opportunity coming your way, perhaps involving children or your children. Share ideas and talk to others you will receive great benefits from sharing.
No matter what chaos may be occurring in your life, an ache is pleasantly eased and you get a taste of the thing that you need the most and it may well carry you for a long time. Meaning and passion is injected back into your life. There will be an answer, to all that remains raw within you, things will shift and lift but right now you probably feel humbled by the universe and just want to say a big thank you. Emotional awareness brings a feeling of stability within.
Smoked Haddock Kedgeree (Serves 4)
Ingredients: • • • •
3 tbsp double cream 3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley ½ lemon, juiced freshly ground black pepper
Directions Place the haddock in a large frying pan, skinside up. Pour over 500ml/17fl oz water, add the bay leaves and bring the water to a gentle simmer. Cook the fish for 8-10 minutes until it is just done and flakes easily. Drain in a colander set over a bowl, reserving the cooking liquid, and discard the bay leaves. Pour the cooking liquid into a medium saucepan and stir in the rice. Cover with a lid and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer the rice very gently for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and leave the rice covered for 3-5 minutes more. While the rice is cooking, bring some water to the boil in a medium pan. Add the eggs and cook for eight minutes. Drain them in a sieve under cold running water and when cool enough to handle, peel them
carefully and set aside. Cook the peas, if using, in a small pan of boiling water and drain. Melt the butter with the oil in a large pan and cook the onion over a low heat for five minutes until well softened, stirring occasionally. Add the curry powder and cook for another 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Place the cooked rice into the pan and stir in the onions. Add the peas, cream, parsley and a few twists of ground black pepper. Flake the fish into chunky pieces and add these to the pan. Gently stir in the lemon juice and cook for 1-2 minutes. Cut the eggs into quarters and place them on the rice. Cover the pan with a lid and heat through for 2-3 minutes or until the eggs are warm, then serve.
POCO A POCO
SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell
LESSON
August 23rd September 22nd
Kym’s Kitchen
Veo, veo. The Spanish have a similar game to “I spy with my little eye”. It goes : "Veo, veo” - I see, I see, "¿Qué ves?" - What do you see? "Una cosita?" - A little thing, "¿Qué cosita es?" - What little thing is it? And then you state the letter the "cosita" begins with. Empieza con la A - It begins with A, for example. You can try it if you have any long car journeys during the summer. By the time you get to Calais you could have increased your Spanish vocabulary considerably - or started divorce proceedings and left the kids at the French border! Seeing is not always believing. In Spanish it becomes "Ver para creer" which loosely translates as (You have) to see in order to believe. I see, when it means I understand is Entiendo. Let's see - Vamos a ver, See you later - Hasta luego, See you soon - Hasta pronto See you on Monday - Hasta el lunes If you want to explain the magnificent view from your home you can use Hasta donde alcanza la vista - As far as the eye can see. But if you are speaking figuratively to say As far as I can see (in my opinion) use Por lo que veo. And if you are making an excuse about something and begin with You see... it is usual to use Es que..... You see, I don't have money. Es que no tengo dinero You see, he hasn't time to go and see you - Es que no tiene tiempo para ir a verte. See you next time - Hasta la próxima. Valerie. Apologies to Mr Kennith Briggs I am sorry for the confusion about boquerones in my last article. Most dictionaries translate boquerones as anchovies but I am told that in fact anchovies are a different fish altogether and known as whitebait in England. There are always words which are not easy to translate and this is one of them but congratulations on your perserverance with learning Spanish and keep up the good work. Keep slathering on Breakthrough in sunscreen melanoma treatment Most parents conscientiously protect the very young from the sun but once they start walking, sun protection often takes a back seat. But unless sun protection practices become inviolable habits early in life – like using seat belts in a vehicle – a US study has found that children become increasingly lax as they get older about preventing sunburn that can lead to life-threatening cancers decades later. In the three-year study of 360 fifth graders, researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital found that as the children moved into adolescence, the proportion who “often or always” used sunscreen dropped from 50 per cent to 25 per cent. The researchers said this was because most teenagers believe they look more attractive with a tan and don’t think that this can lead to wrinkled, leathery, blotchy skin decades later. Even fewer are aware that they are risking skin cancer later in life. Studies have shown that as much as 80 per cent of a person’s lifetime exposure to skin-damaging ultraviolet rays occurs by age 18. They have also shown that the more children are exposed to the sun early in life – especially if this leads to serious sunburns – the greater the risk of later developing both superficial skin cancers and deadly melanomas. The researchers said sun protection is all the more important now because the thinning of the ozone layer has made everyone more susceptible to skin-damaging solar radiation. Their advice: Keep slathering on the sunscreen as often as
GlaxoSmithKline have developed a new drug, called trametinib, which prolonged the lives of patients with advanced melanoma in a clinical trial, potentially adding to an increasing number of treatments for a disease that was once nearly untreatable. The trial involved 322 patients with advanced or metastatic melanoma who received either trametinib or one of two chemotherapy drugs.

AGAINST ALL THE ODDS THE GIRL TOM JONES MENTORED WON THE COMPETITION
Tom’s girl beats the lot … and what a voice the winner of The Voice has got! Leanne Mitchell has won The Voice. Leanne, 28 and from Lowestoft, had been singing at holiday camps prior to the show but has now won herself a lucrative recording contract as winner of The Voice. Leanne's husband Rob Hurren is thrilled about her success - even though a lot of fans don't realise she's spoken for. The competition which saw Tom Jones, Jessie J, Will.i.am and Danny O’Donoghue had tears, arguments, laughs and not a small amount of banter between the judges who were name dropping like they’d just invented it. Many contestants were voted off by the public voting system, some that shouldn’t have been it has to

It could easily have been one of the worst singers in the world, but one that had huge amounts of personality who could have won but Leanne and mentor Tom beat all the odds with his expertise and experience guiding Leanne and her voice into winning style. Performing a duet with Tom, belting out “Mama Told Me Not To Come” the pair were the best duet of the night. It has to be said that their duet was closely followed by Bo Bruce and Danny O’Donaghue with smouldering looks going on between them as they sang Pro Green’s “Where Is The Love”. 27-year- old Bo (real name Lady Catherine Anna Brudenell-Bruce who is the
daughter of the Earl of Cardigan) said: “This experience wouldn’t have been the same if I hadn’t had Danny. From the word go, he had confidence in me. I get on very well with Danny, we have a lot in common.” Later, blinking back tears, Danny referred to Bo’s mother, who is battling cancer. “There’s a lot on Bo’s plate with her mother, who’s incredibly sick. For her to give the performances she does... I take my hat off to her. She’s my inspiration.”Danny has since revealed that he has split with his Lithuanian girlfriend of four years. The four judges also performed a medley of their hits before the winner was announced.

Kylie’s newest award Fab Four top the list
Kylie Minogue has celebrated her 25th year in pop music by being handed an outstanding contribution gong at the Glamour Women of The Year Awards. The 44-year-old was presented with the award by Scissor Sisters’ frontman Jake Shears. Domino singer Jessie J was crowned best solo artist at the event, with Will.i.am attending to hand his fellow The Voice star her award. Kelly Rowland, who has
left a vacancy in the judging panel of The X Factor after quitting the show, won the TV personality gong. Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden was named best theatre actress for her role as Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical. Other winners at the London bash, which was hosted by Graham Norton, include This Morning and The Voice host Holly Willoughby for best presenter Downton Abbey star
Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil Crawley) won top UK TV actress, while her co-star Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary) took the editor's special award. Florence + The Machine were named best band, and Dionne Warwick was named this year's Icon, in an award presented by Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood. The awards are the result of around 330,000 votes by readers of Glamour magazine and its website.
The Beatles have beaten Elvis Presley and Madonna to be declared the biggest selling singles act since charts began 60 years ago. The Fab Four, who split more than 40 years ago, racked up 17 number ones during their relatively brief eight-year chart domination. But performers whose careers have decades longer in some cases - such as Sir Cliff Richard - have failed to outsell them, a new chart reveals. A countdown due to be broadcast of the all-time biggest sellers since the singles chart began in 1952 - the year the Queen took the throne - shows The Beatles are still unsurpassed. Elvis, who continued to
have strong sales in the past decade thanks to a reissue campaign with tracks such as A Little Less Conversation, is ranked second. Sir Cliff who has had 124 top 40 hits and 14 number ones finished in third place in the list compiled by the Official Charts Company. Madonna, who has made the top 40 more than 60 times, is ranked fourth. Tony Blackburn, who will count down the new chart, said: "This chart offers a fascinating look at the past 60 years in music and shows the impact that modern stars like Rihanna and Katy Perry have had. "The list is really varied and will provide something for everyone. There are definitely a few surprises in
store - Coldplay being at 60 for one!" The Top 20 on The List: 1. The Beatles 2. Elvis Presley 3. Cliff Richard 4. Madonna 5. Michael Jackson 6. Elton John 7. Queen 8. Abba 9. David Bowie 10. Rihanna 11. Paul McCartney 12. Kylie Minogue 13. Rolling Stones 14. Rod Stewart 15. Take That 16. Stevie Wonder 17. Oasis 18. Eminem 19. Whitney Houston 20. Spice Girls

Frederick Sands Oh to be in England! Well, at least to have watched all the pageantry for the Diamond Jubilee from the comfort of sunny Spain anyway. My family and I sat and watched the boats on the River Thames on Saturday and what a sight it would have been had the sun been shining but, oh no, the rain fell in buckets all day long and, did we feel for that poor band of singers doing their bit for the Queen. The poor bedraggled lot struggled on though in true British fashion but I wouldn’t wonder at them all having gone down with pneumonia since.
And no wonder poor Prince Philip landed in hospital. I hear from friends in London that not only did it rain all day but it was also rather cold. The man is in his nineties and he and our Queen stood throughout the festivities. Sure, there were throne-like chairs for them to sit on (that were probably just a bit soggy anyway as they looked to me like they were out from under the cover) but the pair of them apparently wanted to see everything that was going on – and all power to them. However, watching people on the telly, they all seemed to be enjoying themselves nevertheless and they came across as having something akin to the old “Dunkirk Spirit”. As one lady in her mid-70’s said: “I’m not a sugarlump so I won’t melt in the rain!” and jolly good luck to her. I hope she went home to a nice warm house or flat and a lovely cup of cocoa with her daughter that was there with her braving the weather. On Sunday we all watched the concert – wasn’t it grand? Tom Jones still has got it –

If you would like to be kept up to date or take part in any of the events then go to www.kencampbell.info darned sight more energy than I’ve had for years. Obviously their hard work and effort they put into being the heads of state give them enough exercize to keep them amazingly fit and generally healthy. Events like this are to be savoured and it makes me proud to be British.
The Military Wives with little Gavin – there’s something oddly very attractive about that man and he should be adapted as the British mascot from now on! – were brilliant as was the whole Diamond Jubilee Song and its singers and Gary Barlow had

done a great job at organising the whole shebang. It was a shame that Prince Philip had been taken ill but after the weather the day before, hardly surprising but what a shame he missed it all. Prince Charles’ speech at the end was something that had to be heard to realise why we all love being so totally British. “Mummy” seemed to appreciate his words as well and I hope Prince Phillip really could hear the resounding cheer everybody sent to him in his hospital bed after Charles said if it was loud enough he might be able to hear it. Good for you Charles, I think you’d make a quite marvellous King – when “Mummy” decides she’s had enough!

I’m sure you’ve been innundated with letters about last weekend’s Jubilee celebrations but I just thought I would like to get my tuppenceworth in. My wife and I were lucky enough to have bought tickets to attend the celebration lunch at the La Risa Restaurant that’s on Lauro Golf. We hadn’t been there before but had been recommended to the place by friends and what a great time we had. The food was fabulous. My wife is a vegetarian and at set menu events like this there is sometimes a problem but the people at La Risa came up with a wonderful Frittata that she
Very early this morning an extremely rare event took place, a transit of Venus. This was only the 7th time in history that Venus has been observed crossing the face of the Sun.

whatever “it” is, Cliff Richard seems to have lost “it” somewhere along the way but gave a good go at being Cliff (I’m sure you’ll get letters berating me for having said so from Cliff fans but he really wasn’t much cop at all in my opinion!). God knows what those wings were all about on the back of Annie Lennox – voice good, frock horrid, and I’m sure there must have been an angel somewhere but strap-on wings ... please!

was really pleased with. Entertainment was provided by a very energetic (and in that heat too!) Mr Jason Oliver but the assembled crowd joined in too. One lady snuck off (I believe she lives on the golf course) and when Jason sang a Tom Jones song, she and her friends had got panties to throw at him! So, I would like to thank firstly our friend for recommending us to La Risa – we shall definitely be returning for the delicious food again – the owner and staff for all their efforts at making the day quite spectacular, and Jason Oliver for his energy and for being such a good sport.
he first transit was observed in 1639 by 22-year-old Jeremiah Horrocks and subsequent transits have caused tremendous interest in the astronomy world with astronomers being sent to remote areas of the Earth to witness them. The reason that a transit was so important in olden times was because an estimate of the size of the solar system could be made.
B
y having two or more observers make accurate timings of precisely when Venus first touched the edge of the Sun and by using simple trigonometry then the distance to the Sun could be calculated. So for the transit of 1761 the British Astronomer Edmund Halley (of Halley’s Comet fame) proposed an early example of international scientific collaboration when astronomers, scientists and explorers from Britain, Austria and France travelled to various destinations around the world. Halley had unfortunately died before the transit so wasn’t able to take part himself, but tremendous discoveries were made about Venus. Mainly that Venus had an atmosphere.
T
he next transit occurred eight years later in 1769. Transits occur in pairs separated by eight years and then 105 years until the next pair. Interest had grown so much by now that even Captain Cook was despatched to Tahiti to help with the calculations. With these multiple observations the distance from the Sun to the Earth, called one astronomical unit, was calculated to be 95,000,000 miles (+ or – one million miles). This ‘best guess’ was a little disappointing, due in part to less than perfect time keeping but also because during a transit Venus doesn’t just suddenly pop into view on the Sun’s face. Because of its atmosphere Venus tends to ‘stretch’ its way into view in what is known as the black drop effect. Even so, a guess of 95 million miles wasn’t bad for 1769!
A
nd so 105 years later in 1874 and again in 1882 even more observers were sent around the world and the estimate of the distance to the Sun was refined to 92,584,000 miles. With modern techniques we now know that the official astronomical unit is 92,955,807 miles or 149,598,000 km if you prefer.
I
was lucky enough to observe the last transit of Venus on 8th June 2004 but unfortunately this morning’s transit took place while the Sun was on the other side of the world and it was night time here.
We’ll have to wait until December 2117 for the next one to occur.
T
he final word should go to French astronomer Guillaume Le Gentil who set out from Paris in 1760 headed for the east coast of India to observe the 1761 transit. On route he discovered that war had broken out between France and Britain and his destination was deemed too unsafe for him to land. He switched ships and headed further up the coast. He had almost arrived when he learned that the British had captured that area too, so undeterred he headed back to France, but he was still at sea when the transit occurred and so wasn’t able to make any observations from the rolling deck of the ship. After having come this far, he thought he might as well await the next transit of Venus, which would come in another eight years, so he spent the time mapping the coast of Madagascar. He decided to view the 1769 transit from the Philippines but found that the Spanish had taken over there, so he headed back to India.
A
rriving at India he set up an observatory and, although the weather had been lovely, on the day of the transit it was cloudy and raining. By now he was almost on the brink of insanity so he set off for home. But his journey was delayed by dysentery and a severe storm which almost drowned him.
A
rriving back in France 11 years later he discovered that his wife had declared him dead, she’d remarried and sold off all his estate. As he was ‘dead’ he’d also lost his job at the Royal Academy of Science! Bless him.

Government warns fuel firms over pricing The government is threatening to take action against fuel companies who don't pass on cuts in global oil prices to motorists at the pumps.Transport Secretary Justine Greening has told retailers to set up their own code of practice so consumers can monitor daily petrol or diesel prices. If the industry does not do it, then the government plans to introduce legislation. Ms Greening added 'It’s time the big companies started playing fair with the motorist, so I am giving them one last chance.'
Lorenzo wins home MotoGP Jorge Lorenzo has pulled a 20-point lead at the head of the MotoGP standings after a hard-earned victory over countryman Dani Pedrosa in their home Catalunya round, the second of the four Spanish events.
Barring an ill-fated pass for the lead by Lorenzo's team-mate Ben Spies on lap 3, victory was a straight fight between the two Spaniards. Honda’s Pedrosa held the early advantage, until he was levered from the lead by Lorenzo into turn one on lap 7 of 25. But Pedrosa clung with Lorenzo and slipstreamed back ahead on lap 12, then gained valuable breathing room when Lorenzo lost one-second after running wide. It was a pivotal moment and the Factory Yamaha star dug deep to reel Pedrosa
back in, and made the racewinning pass when Pedrosa’s bike wheelied onto the back straight with just over five laps to go.

Dovizioso meanwhile is celebrating after turning in his first MotoGP podium since joining the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team with a fine run to third at the Catalunya Grand Prix.Together with teammate Cal Crutchlow, the Italian, who made the switch to the Yamaha team
for 2012 after being frozen out of Repsol Honda's lineup, has been a constant figure in the upper echelons of the MotoGP reckoning since the start of the season, but this is the first time either has taken the satellite M1 to the podium. Starting sixth on the grid, Dovizioso's strong start – coupled to Ben Spies's off – would lift him up to third in the early stages, whereby he maintained an impressive pace to stay in touch with leaders Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo. Though a costly error would see him drop into the clutches of Casey Stoner in the final stages, Dovizioso clung on to secure what is a 17th career MotoGP podium finish, a result he hadn't expected so soon into his Tech 3 endeavour.
JRM Racing looking forward to Le Mans JRM Racing continued its preparations for its debut Le Mans 24 Hours campaign this weekend as it completed its first laps of the legendary La Sarthe track at the pre-race test day on Sunday 3rd June. This year the reigning FIA GT1 world champions have made the step up to the highest category of sportscar racing, LMP1, competing against works teams including Audi and Toyota in Le Mans. Barrel rolls and bacon rolls at e Goodwood Breakfast Club Ultimate High, the UK’s top aerobatics training school, brought barrel rolls to join the bacon rolls at the Goodwood Breakfast Club again last Sunday (3rd June). Ultimate High ran aerobatic experiences in the Bulldog, an ex-Military training British aircraft fitting perfectly with the allBritish vehicle theme to celebrate HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Bulldog is an aerobatic training aircraft originally built for the RAF to train pilots before moving on to fast jets. Ultimate High’s aircraft are ex-Swedish airforce with rocket attachment points on the wings; the rocket firing switch is still on the throttle. The Bulldog has a tricycle undercarriage with one wheel on the nose and
two behind on the wings. The Bulldog has a side-byside seating position, which ideally suited to aerobatic instruction. It is capable of speeds of over 200mph with a climb rate of 950ft feet per minute. Visitors were able to admire a vast array of British vehicles, while enjoying the opportunity to meet like-minded enthusiasts, eat a tasty breakfast and book an aerobatic flight in the Bulldog aerobatic training aircraft. Goodwood Breakfast Club is one of the finest monthly events on the UK’s motoring calendar and attracts a jaw-dropping collection of some of the world’s most desirable and cherished vehicles.

Woods wins with touch of magic Los Nebrales Golf Tiger Woods birdied three of the last four holes, including an amazing chip-in, to win the Memorial tournament on Sunday and match Jack Nicklaus for second on the all-time win list. Woods was four behind leader Spencer Levin at the start of the day but made a fast start with four birdies in his first seven holes. Woods captured his 73rd career title with a five-under par 67 final round putting him on nine-under par 279 after 72 holes and bringing a fifth Memorial crown after victories in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2009. Woods, a 14-time major champion chasing the alltime record of 18 major titles won by Nicklaus, matched Nicklaus for second on the all-time US win list with the victory, moving nine behind Sam Snead's record 82 triumphs. "It has been a pretty nice run since I turned pro," Woods said. "To do it at age 36, that's not too shabby. I have been very proud of what I have done so far. I have a lot of good years ahead of me." Woods, whose victory margin was two strokes over
South African Rory Sabbatini and Argentina's Andres Romero, had not won an event in which he was not the 54-hole leader since 2009. Woods made a spectacular 48foot chip-in for a birdie at the par3 16th, blasting high out of the rough and landing the ball just on the green, then watching it roll into the cup. Explaining to reporters later Woods said, ”If I leave it short, it rolls left, if I hit it long it's in the water. The lie
wasn't that great. It came out just perfect." "That shot at 16 was the best I've ever seen here," Nicklaus told Woods as the winner walked off the course. "That was the most unbelievable gutsy shot I’ve ever seen," Nicklaus added to watching reporters. "If he is short the tournament is over. If he’s long the tournament is over. And he put it in the hole." The victory comes two weeks before Woods will try to move closer to Nicklaus
on the major win list at the US Open at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Rory McIlroy Rory McIlroy meanwhile says he is racing against time to sort out his game before the start of the US Open after missing his third straight cut. US Open champion McIlroy carded a miserable seven-over par second round at the Memorial Tournament as Tiger Woods was easing into contention. McIlroy, 23, said: "I've still got a long way to go." With the Northern Irishman set to begin the defence of his US Open title on 14th June, McIlroy has missed cuts at the Players Championship and the PGA Championship. "I'm definitely hitting the ball better than I did last week, so I can see an improvement there," McIlroy added after his latest early exit.

Jubilee celebrations at Mijas Bowls Club The Queen’s Jubilee celebration were off to a joyous start at Mijas Bowls Club in Fuengirola on Sunday starting with, cream teas and traditional games in the afternoon followed by a superb barbeque, and music and dancing in the
evening. Visitors throughout the day played good old traditional British games, like darts, putting and skittles whilst listen to or singing along with popular music of the fifties. The President Rob Robinson
proposed a toast to the Queen and everyone joined in an emotional rendition of God Save the Queen and Land of Hope and Glory. Members and friends all entered into the spirit of the occasion by dressing in a patriotic manner and there
was a prize for the best (most outrageous) costume. A sumptuous barbeque was then enjoyed by all and served by the hardworking members of the Mijas Bowls Social group. After which the evening was rounded off with dancing and singing to
some slightly more contemporary music. No time to recover – Monday morning 9.30 am members were meeting for their weekly footbowl competition. To encourage wider involvement in the sport Mijas Bowls has recently removed the need for new bowlers to contribute a one-off starting fee. Anyone wanting information regarding the club’s activities should contact Ann Fenton (Secretary) on 952 466038 or email: mijasbowls@hotmail.com

bottom half of the draw, now meets David Ferrer on Wednesday. Murray said: "I've played Davis Cup away ties but that was one of the most hostile atmospheres I've played in." The 25-year-old added: "He started the match well, but I started to use the energy from the crowd in a positive way and turned it around and played very well the last few sets. "I wouldn't say it got too much. It was almost like playing a football match. And I like football. It's the

world number four had been hampered by a back injury during his second-round win over Jarkko Nieminen, but showed no signs of the
problem when he easily defeated Santiago Giraldo in the third round. Yet, on Court Phillipe Chatrier on Monday, the injury looked to have resurfaced as early as the second game of the match, as he gestured to his coaching staff, tapping the lefthand side of his lower back with his racquet and shaking his head. "Obviously they were not ideal conditions. It's a little bit stiff, but it's much better than it was a few days ago," said Murray.
England have opted to rest seamer James Anderson for the third and final Test against West Indies at Edgbaston, which starts on Thursday. England lead the series 2-0 and have opted to give Anderson a break with the Tests against South Africa to come. Anderson has missed only one of England's previous 25 Tests but suffered a slight quad problem in the second Test. It means Steven Finn or Graham Onions will come in.

Roy Hodgson branded disgraceful after Rio Ferdinand snub England manager Roy Hodgson and the FA were branded “disgraceful” last night after Rio Ferdinand was again overlooked for Euro 2012 despite Gary Cahill being ruled out by injury. Cahill, 26, was ruled out with a double fracture of his jaw after colliding with goalkeeper Joe Hart during the friendly win over Belgium on Saturday. Liverpool's Martin Kelly has been called up as his replacement. Full-back Kelly,

He wants to play," Ferdinand's representative Jamie Moralee told BBC Sport. "Rio's very disappointed. He thought he had done enough. It's very difficult to accept. "This is a player with 81 caps for his country. I don't know anyone who

England coach Hodgson said the decision was for "footballing reasons" and not because Terry is due to stand trial in July over a charge he racially abused Ferdinand's brother Anton. Terry denies the charge. Meanwhile, Terry has been given the all-clear after a scan on a hamstring injury.
Joey Barton attacked, punched in the face Premier League footballer Joey Barton has been punched in the face outside a nightclub. "Merseyside Police were called to Eberle Street in Liverpool city centre at 5.30am this morning following reports of an altercation. "On arrival officers found a 29-year-old man who had sustained injuries to his face. The man left the scene voluntarily." She added: "Two 21year-old men from the L13 area were arrested at the scene for a public order offence. They are currently in police custody."
Portugal's final European Championship warm-up ended in disappointing fashion as Umut Bulut's double helped secure a 3-1 victory for Turkey in Lisbon. The visitors led 20, and although Nani replied, a Pepe own goal sealed victory in one of five games on Saturday featuring England's fellow qualifiers. Poland thrashed Andorra, Denmark beat Australia and Croatia drew with Norway. European Championship co-hosts Poland, who kick-off Euro 2012 when they face Greece on Friday, coasted to a 4-0 win over Andorra. Robin Van Persie scored twice as the Netherlands trounced a young Northern Ireland side 6-0.
Barton is banned for the first 12 games of next season having been sent off and subsequently found guilty of two counts of violent conduct in QPR's defeat at Manchester City on the final day of the 201112 campaign.
Usain Bolt stormed back to form by winning the 100m at the Rome Diamond League meeting in 9.76 seconds – the fastest time in the world this year. The Jamaican was sluggish by his own standards in clocking 10.04 last Friday in Ostrava in the Czech Republic. But he exploded out of the blocks in Rome to hit the front early on and power away from compatriot Asafa Powell, who was second in 9.91 secs.
