NATIONAL NEWS - NO “ONEROUS AND COUNTERPRODUCTIVE” AUSTERITY CONDITIONS
Enthusiasm over bailout begins to fizzle After welcoming the news that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had negotiated an EU bailout for the country’s ailing banks, stock markets worldwide opened higher on Monday. However, their initial enthusiasm began to fade as a result of concerns about the election in Greece on June 17th to choose a new government and, by implication, whether to stay in the euro zone. A disorderly Greek exit could threaten bank stability throughout the whole euro zone and some analysts are warning it could provoke a Lehman Brothers-like global financial seizure. The EU has agreed to extend a bailout of up to €100 billion but the exact amount will be decided by two independent audits to be carried out over the next few days. Speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the EU's economic and monetary
affairs commissioner Olli Rehn insisted that Spain would not have to implement any new austerity measures in return for receiving financial aid. Spain urgently needed the bailout, and it may turn out to be a better package than the others. The Spanish government will be able to use the money for the sole purpose of recapitalising its banks, avoiding the onerous and counterproductive austerity conditions imposed on Greece, Ireland and Portugal. The looser terms were presented as a kind of reward for Madrid’s voluntary fiscal stringency over the past several months.

The government has been keen to stress that it is the banks that have been bailed out, not the country. But in an interview on Monday, EU competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia said there would be a troika of authorities to oversee the financial assistance, just as happened with Greece, Portugal and the Republic of Ireland. The troika will be made up of the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the Eurogroup of eurozone finance ministers. Spain’s troubles are rooted not in reckless government borrowing but in the bursting of a housing
bubble that has devastated banks which lent too much for too long. The bailout gives the European Union the authority to monitor the bailed-out banks and a greater voice in structural reforms, including loosening the tight links between local politicians and local banks, something that financial observers have been urging for a long

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Busy, busy, busy
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
Last Wednesday was my birthday and it is the first time I can remember ever having worked on the day. usually I am away as it co-incided with bank holidays in the uK and we had just carried on the tradition since we came to Spain. So, while I was out delivering the papers I have to admit to making an absolute pig of myself with any thought of a diet flying straight out of my car window. Firstly was a huge piece of delicious chocolate cake given to me by the Original English Tea Rooms in Mijas, then a fab piece of Swiss Roll from the Boulevard Restaurant in La Cala. Add to that what I take with me while delivering the papers as a matter of course anyway and there’s a few pounds been put on! Friday and Saturday nights we spent at the Tamisa Golf Hotel and joined in with the Conservatives Abroad summer ball on Friday, together with friends Catherine and Raymond (Catherine is the friend of mine that I have told you was badly injured in a hit-and-run accident in the uK) and, on Saturday night had dinner watching divas and divo on the terrace by the pool along with the St Anthony’s college graduation party – all students were, of course, impeccably behaved! Then on Sunday I dragged my husband off to the donkey Breeding Sanctuary that we had an article about last week – read more about it on page 15 ... there’s a bonus for someone who helps them with a digger!

Enthusiasm over Plea to save greyhounds bailout begins to fizzle
Continued from FRONT PAGE
When Amanpour asked her if she agreed with the forecasts of financial tycoon George Soros who said that Europe has three months to save the euro, Lagarde replied that if further interventions became necessary, they should be taken "more shortly than three months". She quickly clarified the remark: "I'm not fixing a set
term by which the whole situation has to be settled. The construction of the eurozone has taken time," Lagarde said. "And it's a work in construction at the moment. It must be improved, modified and reinforced in the course of time. Markets think that it is happening too slowly and this is the message that was obviously conveyed".
Some 50 members of the Partido Animalista (PACMA, Animals Party) and other animal protection groups gathered outside the European Commission’s office in Madrid on Sunday to ask the EU to pressure the Spanish government into doing something to protect an estimated 15,000 greyhounds and podencos that are killed or abandoned at the end of the hunting season. A spokesman said no other country in the EU and allowed hunters
greyhound owners to treat their dogs so cruelly: “When the dogs are no longer any use to them, they drown them, hang them, burn them alive or abandon them to their fate. We want a national law to
put an end to all this.” A similar protest was held simultaneously outside the European Parliament in Strasbourg to support the one in Madrid.
Look, no hands Archbishop reveals salary The Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid, Antonio Maria Rouco Varela, revealed during an interview on ABC Punto Radio just how much he earned – €1,160 a month “like all the Spanish bishops”. He said a parish priest earned between €800 and €900 on average although the longest-serving ones may get €1,000. He also said the causes of the

Crisis? What Alleged Gürtel ringleader out of jail crisis?
In May, the High Court agreed to lower Correa’s bail from €600,000 to €200,000 after his lawyers said said he couldn’t post the money because he didn’t have enough funds.
In 2010, Swiss investigators found around €24 million euros in hidden accounts linked to Correa. Prosecutors have described Correa as the “leader of the biggest corruption scheme since the transition to democracy in 1977”. They have accused him of leading a team of corrupt businessmen who paid huge kickbacks to Partido Popular (PP) politicians in exchange for public contracts with regional governments in Valencia, Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha. The original inquiry led to other investigations into illegal campaign financing involving the PP in Valencia. The case forced the resignation two years
ago of the Valencia premier Francisco Camps, who was recently acquitted on bribery charges involving gifts and dress suits from a member of Correa’s network. Prosecutors had opposed releasing him because they believe he is a flight risk and he will now have to report to court every day until his trial.
An investigation by the ABC newspaper has revealed that the 17 regional governments spend twice as much as the parliament in Madrid on “political advisers” and ten times as much as the Upper House. In all, last year they spent €15 million of public money on these “temporary staff” who are hired by the political parties and are not listed as public sector workers. Two regional governments – the Basque Country and Asturias – spend the most money on advisers, followed by

The alleged mastermind of the Gürtel kickbacks-forcontracts scheme, Francisco Correa, walked out of jail on Monday, more than three years after he was taken into preventive custody on charges of corruption and moneylaundering. He was able to pay €200,000 bail after High Court Judge Pablo Ruz agreed on June 1st to unblock accounts and insurance policies held by Correa’s mother after prosecutors assured him that the money deposited hadn’t come from any illegal activities.

The children really missed “Bob Esponja” as SpongeBob is known in Spain, who’d been entertaining them during the morning break at the Las Tablas de Valverde school in Madrid with songs and snatches of dialogue from “Bob Esponja”. But for three days he hadn’t been by. What happened was that “Bob Esponja”, in real life a street cleaner called Emilio, took fright when someone posted a video of his performance on YouTube which became an instant hit. He knew one of the teachers had filmed him some three months back but didn’t think anything of it until a brother-in-law rang him to tell him he was on Facebook.

Activists targeted ahead of protest Thousands of anti-government protesters marched through Moscow on Tuesday, demanding fresh elections and a new president, the day after police raided the homes of several prominent activists. President Vladimir Putin signed a new law last week increasing fines for people attending unsanctioned protests. Tuesday's rally was the first to test Mr Putin’s harder line against the opposition. Mr Putin won a third presidential term in March despite protests over alleged fraud in December's parliamentary vote. Those targeted by police on Monday included leading opposition activists Alexei Navalny, Sergei Udaltsov and Ilya Yashin. Police also searched the home of Ksenia Sobchak– a well known TV presenter and daughter of Mr Putin's late mentor and St
Petersburg mayor Anatoly Sobchak – who has joined the protest movement.

Children being used as human shields Children in Syria have accused troops of using them as human shields, according to a report by the UN's Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict. Radhika Coomaraswamy said that some children claimed they had been forced to ride on tanks to stop attacks by opposition fighters. Ms Coomaraswamy told reporters her team had returned from Syria with "horrific" reports. She said the suffering inflicted on children in Syria was unusual even for combat
situations: “Killing and maiming of children in cross-fire is something we come across in many conflicts but this torture of children in detention, children as young as 10, is something quite extraordinary, which we don't really see in other places." She said that in recent massacres children under the age of 10 had been summarily killed, adding: "Those kinds of things we don't see elsewhere." However, she also criticised the opposition Free Syrian Army for endangering children: “For the first time
we heard of children being recruited by the Free Syrian Army mainly in medical and service orientated jobs but still on the front line.” A team of UN military observers is currently inside Syria as part of a six-point peace plan brokered by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan. Despite all international diplomatic efforts, bloodshed is continuing on a daily basis. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 100 people were killed in violence across Syria on Monday.
Coroner says dingo killed baby An Australian coroner has made a final ruling that a dingo dog took baby Azaria Chamberlain from a campsite in 1980 and caused her death. The decision was made after Azaria's parents presented new evidence to try to clear their names. After the eight week-old baby went missing, they were charged with her disappearance.
Her mother was convicted of her murder. She was released when evidence matched the dingo story but doubts lingered. Ms Chamberlain-Creighton told reporters outside the courthouse on Monday: ''Obviously we are relieved and delighted to come to the end of this saga. No longer will Australia be able to say that dingoes are not
dangerous.'' Ms Chamberlain -Creighton has campaigned tirelessly to have dingoes officially blamed for the death of her child. It was a case that divided Australians and was even turned into the film A Cry In The Dark, starring Meryl Streep. Three previous coroner's inquests proved inconclusive.

Gay marriage changes in law are said to be going ahead but the Church of England has issued a 13page document saying that this would clash with canon (church) law.

The proposed law does say that no religious establishments would be forced to provide gay marriage services on their premises. The Bishop of Leicester said: “We continue to support the gay community. I think the difficulty we have here is the substitution of equality for uniformity, that is to say there can be no distinction at all between men and women. The government is seeking to meet what it perceives to be the needs of the gay community, but this does not amount to a basis for introducing a complete redefinition of the concept of marriage based on a consultation

A panel of three judges at the Provincial Court in Tarragona found Mohammad Zahid Saleem and Glanina Monica Neruja guilty of snatching Sahid Saeed of Oldham, Lancashire at gunpoint at his grandmother’s home in Jhelum in Pakistan’s Punjab region in March 2010.
During the child’s 13day ordeal, Saleem repeatedly made calls threatening that the boy would be killed and parts of his body sent to them if they didn’t pay the ransom.
The couple made threatening phone calls to the boy’s family and had travelled to Paris to collect a 110,000 pound ransom from one of his uncles, Tauser Ahmed. Saleem, from Pakistan was found not guilty of conspiracy, robbery in conjunction with a crime of
The couple went shopping and visited relatives after collecting the ransom and driving back to Spain. Spanish police have recovered £103,690 and €3,650. In March last year, a Pakistani court sentenced one of the four men, Imran Hussain, who carried out the kidnapping to 60 years in prison.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has said that there is still some way to go before military redundancy rounds can come to an end. Another 2,900 jobs have been axed from the army. The rAF has to shed another 730 of its personnel and the navy 170. The MoD said the total number being axed in this round of reductions was 3,800 people. The cuts to the British military were set out in the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security review, and then revised last summer. The navy and the airforce were told to axe 5,000 staff each, but the hardest hit was the army, which has to shrink by 19,000 before the end of the decade. UK
More money The UK's top bosses enjoyed average annual pay rises of 12% last year, despite the FTSE 100 share index losing 6% of its value. The figure, in the latest pay report by proxy voting agency Manifest and remuneration consultancy MM&K, has reignited the row over executive pay which has recently been played out in the so-called Shareholder Spring. According to the report, the average settlement was £4.8m but a quarter of bluechip bosses took home pay and bonus rises of 41%. It said basic salaries for FTSE 100 chiefs rose 2.5% but total earnings were boosted by deferred bonuses and longterm awards. GloUcESTEr

Trolls hunted under new proposed law Trolls, the people who post nasty remarks about other people on Facebook and Twitter, are to be stopped after the government has gone to court to force the companies to reveal the identity of such bullies. Falklanders to hold referendum Floods on sovereignty next year According to the Falklands Government on Tuesday afternoon, the Falkland Islands are to hold a referendum on their "political status" in 2013 in a bid to end the continuing dispute with Argentina over their sovereignty. Increasing tensions between Argentina, Great Britain and the Falkland
Islands have been building over the sovreignty of the by Falklands, known Arentina as The Malvinas . UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "The British Government has been consistent in its view that the future of the Falklands can only be determined by the people
who live there. So the Prime Minister and I support this initiative to demonstrate – without doubt – the definitive view of the Falkland Islands’ people. In a region that rightly prizes democracy and human rights, it is entirely appropriate that the islanders can express this fundamental right. The

Local News Arenas announces resignation The general secretary of the Partido Popular-Andalucia (PP-A), Javier Arenas, has announced that he will not stand for re-election at the next regional congress to be held in July.
Left took advantage of the general strike called for March 29th to highlight the austerity measures taken by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s government which observers said frightened some voters away.
Arenas won 50 seats in the Andalucian Parliament in the March 25th regional election, five seats short of a majority. As a result, the Socialist Party (47 seats) joined forces with Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) which won 12 to form a seats government.
Even so, it was the best win Arenas had had in his four attempts to unseat the Socialists in Sevilla. Arenas said at the time that he intended to occupy his seat as an elected MP in Sevilla. He also represents the PP-A in the Upper House in Madrid.
Arenas had been tipped to win a majority but the
Arenas is the PP’s Number 3 man at a
national level, being deputy secretary for Local and Regional Policies. He has said he has no intention of “assuming new responsibilities at a national level”, but most observers have said it will not be long before Sr Rajoy offers him an important position in his government.
Real gas workers arrested The National Police have arrested three men who work for a genuine gas company for taking advantage of their position to rob clients. The men had all the correct documents and uniforms so they had no trouble getting clients to allow them to enter the house. Once inside, two of the men would distract the client with lengthy explanations about the work that needed doing to their gas installations while
the third would search for and other jewellery valuable objects. Like the bogus gas inspectors, the men targeted older people living alone. The police got on to them after a 100-year-old man reported that €800 had disappeared during the men’s visit. In April, the police arrested 14 bogus gas inspectors who charged exorbitant sums of money for unnecessary repairs
and replacements. The local press constantly remind people not to allow any “gas inspector” in without prior notification from the company concerned but now they must be wondering how many of the legitimate ones can be trusted.
Council dims the highway lighting After an unsuccessful attempt to get the Public Works Ministry to pay for the electricity used to light the A-7, Marbella town hall has announced a system that will reduce the potency of the lamp posts from 250 to 150 watts during the hours when there is the least traffic on the road. Public Works councillor Javier Garcia
said drivers would hardly be able to notice the difference. Last year, the council paid an electricity bill of €4.2 million and given the current economic crisis, Garcia said it could no longer foot the bill. Councillors from the opposition parties have criticised the plan because it means the council will
drop its demand for the Public Works ministry to foot the bill for lighting highways that belong to the state, not the local councils.

Tourist tax a ‘big mistake’ The Alliance for Tourism Excellence (Exceltur) which groups together the 24 main tourism business groups in Spain, has said the tourism tax proposed by the United Left (IU, Izquierda Unida) would be a “big mistake”. Details of the tax have yet to be revealed but Exceltur said it would be “unfavourable” for creating jobs in the sector or stimulating national demand. When proposing the tax, the IU said it would bring in an extra €50 million in taxes a year. Exceltur president Jose Luis Zoreda also rejected a proposal by AENA Airports Authority to raise airport taxes. He said tourists who come to Spain seeking sun and beaches “are very sensitive to anything to do with prices” and said AENA could not compare Malaga or Palma de Mallorca with

Mayors want compensation A number of mayors in Malaga province want the Junta de Andalucia to compensate them for the large number of residents who are not “empadronado” (registered) with their town halls. The provincial government estimates that in 14 municipalities alone there are around 600,000 non-registered residents. And it is not just foreigners who are failing to register. Rincón de la Victoria mayor Francisco Salado told a local paper that while only 7 per cent of his town’s population were foreigners, because of its closeness to Malaga, thousands of people who work in the capital but live in the town are not registered. Continuous campaigns urging people to register have failed and the mayors think the Junta should compensate them. They said a town’s population can be accurately estimated using tax and other figures. The amount of money a town receives in aid for public works and infrastructure maintenance from the regional and local governments is based on the “padron” figures. This could make a big difference to the local economy of a town like Torrox with a foreign population of 7,000 – nearly half its total population – many of whom for one reason or another are not registered.
The owners of five of Cordoba’s famous patios have opened them to visits by groups of not more than 30 people so that they “can hear the water falling and the birds singing”, experiences not available when the patios are visited by crowds earlier during the patio festival in May. The opportunity is only open until the end of June. The owners plan two visits a day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and there is

rime Minister Mariano Rajoy finally obtained a bailout, sell-out or whatever you want to call it, to clean up the country’s banks – or had it forced on him by Brussels, depending which newspaper you read – over the weekend. Whatever his critics say, it will be good for the country in the long run because there’ll be powerful outsiders such as the IMF making sure that the money really does go to sorting out the banks, something that should have been done years ago. But as is usual with the Spanish Left, it was a case of damned if he did, damned if he didn’t. Despite EU assurances that there were no other strings attached, within an hour of arriving in Berlin on Monday for a meeting with the German Social Democratic Party, opposition leader Alfredo Peréz Rubalcaba was hinting darkly at having seen “faxes from Brussels” which talked of VAT increases and more spending cuts which would affect pensions, not just education and health. He capped it all by saying that nobody in the EU has much faith in Rajoy. The Socialists and other opposition parties want to sue all the bankers in Spain from the sound of it but who is really to blame for the sad state of Spanish banking?
F
or starters we have former PM José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and his economic advisers who during the seven and a half years they were in power did nothing to stop the banks from throwing every penny they had at people wanting mortgages. It’s one thing to want a mortgage, another thing to pay it off. Since the construction bubble based on easy bank loans burst, thousands have lost their homes and the banks have become estate agents who will have to sell properties at a huge loss if they want to get them off their books. Zapatero and his team knew where all this was heading but also knew he and his party wouldn’t be in power when the crunch came so what did they care. Then we have the former director of the Bank of Spain, Miguel Angel Fernandez Ordoñez – a Zapatero appointee – who allowed this situation to continue unchecked, passing off the merger of weak banks as the best solution when they should have been allowed to go to the wall.
T
he regional political leaders known as barons also played their part by running up huge debts unchecked for years. I mean, how can you overlook invoices from local suppliers, pharmacies, schools and other entities amounting to more than €4,000 million, as former regional premier Francisco Camps did?
Nobody has yet worked out how many businesses crashed all over Spain because they couldn’t collect the money the local and regional governments owed them. Once the bank clean-up begins, it is to be hoped that Rajoy will make all bankers come clean and confess their sins. He should then ban them from ever setting foot inside a bank every again. Let them use the ATMs!
I
ronically, that famously pro-Socialist newspaper El Pais, published the results of a survey carried out for it under the title “Is something rotten in the state of Spain?” This paper, which normally doesn’t carry one single article that doesn’t damn Rajoy, his party and his government, had the nerve to print: “Four years into the ever-darkening tunnel of recession, growing numbers of Spaniards are losing whatever faith they may have had in their political parties and the country’s institutions. A new survey by pollsters Metroscopia shows that for 90 percent of people, the economic crisis is far and away their most pressing concern; the same percentage also believe that they have been abandoned by politicians of all stripes, accusing them of acting out of selfinterest.” So it wasn’t just Rajoy’s fault after all.
E
ven worse, the survey found that from October last year to May “the number of people who believe that the current political system, with all its faults, is the best that the country has known has fallen from 72 per cent to 56 per cent.” That’s a really dangerous drop which unscrupulous authoritarian parties (and I don’t mean the PP) could use to their advantage. But the most interesting thing of all came at the end of the article. “According to the latest Metroscopia poll, 80 percent of Spaniards want to see crossparty agreement on the measures being taken to address the crisis. But the bridges of communication between the prime minister and the leader of the opposition have been broken for months.”
R
ajoy has been saying for months he wants a constructive dialogue as has Rubalcaba himself. So why don’t they get together? Rajoy has nothing to lose but unfortunately Rubalcaba can’t be seen rubbing shoulders with the “enemy” because it will give ammunition to his internal enemies. It’s just so sad that this otherwise intelligent, savvy politician is willing to risk his country’s future just to make sure he’s in the power race with a chance.
e finally appeared after the storm clouds cleared, and it was only for a few brief moments to put his spin on what has been a devastating week for Spanish finance. It was Mariano Rajoy, not Europe and the rest of the world, who put the pressure on Brussels to come up with a €100 billion rescue plan for Spanish banks. It was Rajoy who demanded and “got” generous terms for “the loan” the beleaguered banking i ndustry will get. “No one pressured me, I was the one who pressured to get the credit,” the feisty prime minister said on Sunday, the day after bailout day.
T
his was “a credit,” and not a full bailout like what occurred in those other loser nations. And of course, there was the usual dig at the Socialists. “This should have been done three years ago,” Rajoy emphasised before waving off reporters because he had more important things to do such as getting on a plane to Gdansk, Poland to watch Spain’s first Eurocup match. Priorities first.
W
hat planet does this man live on? Rescue plan, bailout, credit or loan, you decide. Semantics aside, any money that is pumped from one account to another – especially when one is sinking – is indeed salvation. Unfortunately, Rajoy’s bent on the events doesn’t do Spain any good with the rest of Europe. His seriousness is being called into question. The EU leaders know exactly what occurred during that teleconference call on Saturday when the rescue plan was being hammered out by the continent’s finance ministers. It is only a matter of time before some enterprising reporter gets hold of the entire conversation or, better yet, leaks out a transcript of what was said and what wasn’t said.
S
ocialist leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba put it best when he surmised that Rajoy was acting as if Spain had won the lottery “or that the Three Kings showed up with gifts.” For weeks the Partido Popular (PP) government has been telling us that Spain was not going to need a bailout. I for one agreed because I continued to believe that our prime minister was so headstrong he would have preferred to fill the gaping holes in the Spanish banks on his own. I was wrong. Someone more cantankerous than
Alfredo Peréz Rubalcaba
Rajoy turned the thumbscrews.
F
rom 2004 up to December of last year, Rajoy has been the major opposition leader. He now blames the Socialists for all the financial evils that have taken place in the financial institutions. But never once did Rajoy come up with his own plan or suggestion to seek ways to recapitalise the sector. All he did was repeat his calls for early elections. The signs were all there – everyone knew that the banking industry was on the verge of collapse and government leaders were perhaps hoping that things would just get better before they would have to intervene.
N
ow the so-called “troika” will have to step in to ensure that there is no more abuse inside the Spanish banking industry. The money these institutions will get will not go to pay fat bonuses to presidents and board members but instead will be used to shore up the entities hit hard by the real estate bubble and ensure that credits are given to those responsible enough to stimulate the economy.
R
egardless of what Rajoy says, Spain did indeed get a bailout. Unfortunately this fresh injection of capital won’t calm the markets. Investors continue to press Spain for more measures, which could undoubtedly lead to an extension of the Brussels rescue plan to cover the Spanish government’s entire finances. Changes in the way we do business are no doubt on the horizon. It is only a matter of time before Rajoy finally accepts the fact that he was indeed pressured by the IMF, the markets and other countries to seek out this bank bailout package.

Providing these services and activities has done much to bond the Mijas community together which was clearly visible by the enthusiasm and number of participants at this year’s international festival.

Suppliers who had debts with the City of Coin are at last receiving payments for their pending bills. Companies working within the area have also started charging according to the plan created by the central government and the government team continues to encourage suppliers to work in Coin now that an extension has been arranged.
And all were brought together in fine style on Saturday night at the Tamisa Golf Hotel. Yes, there is a lot going on entertainment-wise there at the moment and with the Conservatives Abroad annual summer ball the night before, John Peach and his staff did a fabulous job. Saturday night was the turn of St Anthony’s College graduation party and the students were dressed up to the nines in their best formal party gear with most of the girls looking perfectly elegant and the boys, well, you’d never have known they had it in them
– jeans were not the dress of the evening! Each student went up on to the stage in turn to receive their graduation certificate and an autograph book in which all their friends could write so that they could look back in years to come with fond memories of their time at the school. Their teachers descibed how well each student had done with glowing remarks which I’m sure were all well deserved. Totally out of the usual place of seeing her was Lisa, President of PAD animal charity. Among the
graduates was her son Above is a picture of PAD’s Lisa, husband Pete, graduating son Jay and his very elegant girlfriend Amanda. Everyone had a good night and all the parents and teachers were so proud of them all. Towards the end of the evening some of the students even took to the stage and sang a couple of songs that they had performed in the recent Salon Varietes production of “Mad About Musicals. A multi-talented indeed!

On yer bike at last Age care shop volunteers gathered together to send shop volunteer Tania Aldridge on her way to the “Camino de Santiago”. Tania will start her bike pilgrimage on June 12th at St Jean Pied de Port, France. Travelling approximately 80 kilometres per day, her anticipated arrival at Santiago de Compostela Spain is 10 days and 780 kilometres later. After a couple of well deserved days of rest, Tania returns to the Costa del Sol on June 23rd. Already there has been great support for Tania. The Masons Gemini Lodge has pledged €780 and individuals have so far raised over €1000 euros.
Many companies in the area have gone out of business owing to the large debts that were outstanding but this scheme will enable small and medium businesses to balance their accounts and carry on working. Through this plan debts will be settled for more than 600 suppliers of goods and services who are owed more than €5,000. The last full operation was approved for payment for an amount of €8,835,240 euros. The debt with suppliers along, with the development of the adjustment plan, are some of the measures envisaged by the government to balance the books in Coin. However, municipal taxes have risen and this has been criticised by the PSOE but the Coin Councillor for Economy and Finance has defended the increases stating that; “They were necessary to maintain public services.” Coin council have owed The News over €400 for around three years so perhaps we’ll get paid too – ooh, look, there goes another pink flying pig!
Any companies, groups and individuals who would like to give their support, it’s not too late! Please contact Beverley on 675 874 308 or stop by the Age Care Charity Shop in El Zoco, Calahonda. All money raised goes to the Age Care Association and is used for the benefit of the
increasing number of the ageing expats in the community. If you, or someone you know, needs advice or nonurgent help please contact Age Care on help lines: 691761088 or 655903182, or visit their web site at www.agecarecosta.org.

DAVID THE DOGMAN Dangerous dogs The law Any person owning a potentially dangerous dog (perros potencialmente peligrosos) in Spain must have an appropriate licence (by law of article 3 of the Royal Decree 287/2002, of 22 of March 2002) and the dog must be registered with the municipality. Handlers and walkers of dangerous or potentially dangerous dogs must also be licenced (article 1, 2 of Law 50/1999, of December 1999). A licence is valid for five years. Potentially dangerous dog are identified as being in one of three categories: 1) Breeds and breed crosses classified as potentially dangerous: Doberman (Andalucia only), Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Akita Inu. 2) Dogs with certain characteristics of these breeds are also classified as potentially dangerous. Your
vet can also direct you to register your dog. The characteristics are: Strong musculature, powerful or athletic constitution, robustness, agility, vigour and endurance; Short hair; Deep chest (60 to 80 cm), height of over 50 cm and a weight over 20 Kg; Big, square, head, with a wide skull and strong jaws; Broad, short and muscled neck; Straight, parallel forelegs and muscular hindquarters, relatively long back legs standing at an angle 3) Dogs that have a track record of aggression to humans and other animals must also be licensed and registered. This means if someone reports your dog to the Police as an aggressive dog you are obliged to report to a special centre in the nearest City and obtain a training certificate that you can control your dog. You will also be obliged to have the dangerous dog registered irrespective of breed or size.

Donkeys galore
Following on from last week’s report about young Curtis and his biking up a mountain to raise money for the Giant Donkey Breeding Centre near Estepona, I took a trip up there myself last Sunday to see what it was all about. And well worth the visit it was too! You can visit the donkeys on Sunday mornings from 11am – 1.30pm at ANCRAA, Finca Los Pajaritos KM 164 on the coast road. There were a few people who had made the journey following last week’s article but they had found it difficult to find so here are some better directions this week too. Take the N340 going in the direction of Gibraltar from Malaga. After San Pedro and Guadalmina on your right you will see a big garden centre then, just after that, you’ll go under a concrete bridge with the blue painted railings. You must take the slip road almost immediately after you’ve gone under the bridge. Turn right when you see green and yellow the signs for Urbanizacion Parque Botanico (which is past the sanctuary). Go
through the first lot of apartment buildings and straight over the roundabout. Then when you get to a fork in the road, take the left hand road, not the track. The sanctuary is five minutes up a good road and before the urbanisation and you’ll be able to recognise it as there are a couple of cut-ins made for parking outside. Now, here’s where perhaps one of our readers can help. They need to make a training ring for these fabulous creatures but can’t do it without the aid of a digger. It seems to me not a whole lot of work but the sanctuary is only funded solely by people’s donations – it receives no government funding – so, if some kind chap or chapess with a mini digger would agree to dig out what they need, The News will give that person a voucher for a night’s stay – bed and breakfast – at the lovely Tamisa Golf Hotel (date subject to availability). Get digging and enjoy a night away in great surroundings for your efforts! Call the sanctuary on 626 447 976 for more info.

It was a clear, fine warm evening at Tamisa Golf Hotel and the many guests enjoyed a buffet around the pool washed down by the odd glass or two (or three) of wine. There was dancing on the outside terrace with entertainment provided by the always popular Jo Layte. There were numerous raffle prizes including special Jubilee uncirculated commemorative coins and boxes of wine, vouchers for dinners at restaurants, a night’s bed and breakfast at The Tamisa, “King and

If a loved one died in Spain, would you know what to do? Ask yourself these questions: Who would you call? Do you know the Spanish system? Would you be able to deal with the Spanish Law and Customs? Would family members have time to attend the funeral, which is usually held within 48 hours? Upfront payment is usually required in the region of €4000, would this amount be readily available? Could you cope with these issues at an emotional and stressful time?

There's music in them hills, good music it is too. The annual Allioli music festival, an AndalucĂan mini Woodstock is a lively event, open to all, that draws quite a colourful crowd. This year it falls on Saturday 23rd June and will be held at the camp site. Local talent Markus starts the festivities at around 1.00 pm. Followed by the much loved Beatles tribute band The Silver Beats and then the zany Biagra band, who have promised us a new show this year of awe and wonder. Rounding off the evening in true Rock-a -billy style the amazing Beer Bellys, with the usual scattering of surprise guests in between. In addition the festival offers, a well stocked bar and tasty snacks from the food stalls. It promises to be yet another afternoon

It's 15th April 1900, Easter Sunday, and Paris is the centre of world attention as millions of visitors arrive for the opening weekend of the International Exposition. Amongst them is an elite but diverse group of individuals staying at the Hotel Paradiso. As they gather for dinner the peace of the hotel is rocked by an explosion. Billy Bonka, the foremost chocolate manufacturer in America, is found dead in his room, having apparently been killed by an exploding Easter Egg. Suspicion falls on the six people in front of you – one of them is the murderer. Your task is to discover who that killer is. Fortunately the famous detective Hercule McClue is on hand to assist your investigation. The Suspects are:
by leading members of the Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola: Trevor Cooper, Gina Foster, Owain Griffiths, Lynn Halliday, Catrina Helsby and David Vincent.
Chocolate Bertrand – the greatest legend of the Belgian chocolate industry, known as much for his ruthless business practices as for his sauve bonhomie. Marchioness Duchamp – an internationally notorious artist, whose work has scandalised two continents, and whose private live has done much the same. Mike Bison – the rising star of American boxing, he's in Paris for the Olympic Games, where he's sure he'll win a gold medal. Dame Barbara Carthorse – the most celebrated beauty in England, as well as a hugely popular romantic novelist. Dr. Doris Johnson – an amateur archaeologist specialising in the Aztec culture, she is regarded as being eccentric even in a field populated by eccentrics. Dr. Sigmund Fraud – a controversial psychologist whose theories have won him a small band of devoted disciples and the hatred of conventional society.
Your compere for the evening, Gloria Harding, will guide you through the procedings. As the evening progresses you will learn that a murder has taken place and the six people before you are all suspects. You will be able to hear them talk amongst themselves and discuss what has happened then it is up to you to try and work out which of them is guilty! The action takes place throughout the evening leaving you ample time to enjoy your delicious threecourse meal – with wine included – all for just ₏22.50. The Cala Luna Restaurant has kindly agreed to give a donation from each ticket sold to the Salon Varietes Theatre, so come and support your theatre whilst enjoying a great evening's entertainment. Tony and I go back a long time and have crossed paths many times. As a radio presenter you would have to go a long way to find better and now, having been let out of the studio, Tony is on the road again and what he brings to the stage at Mad Terry@Buzby’s is second to none. Witty, a voice for all songs, keyboard specialist – totally talented – it’s a pleasure to have him join the team at Mad Terry@Buzby’s. Tony started performing at the ripe old age of 13 and joined many bands in his teens, rehearsing with Status Quo – then a local band – playing along at jam sessions. Then at 17 years
old he moved on to keyboards turning pro at the age of 20. He joined punk bands, recorded on Elton John’s Rocket Records label and played in pubs, clubs and all over the UK. He then came to Spain performing in live venues across the country and we are now happy to have such a talent here on the Costa. After 15 years he started Central FM and now, 17 years later, he’s on the road and radio and performing live at Mad Terry@Buzby’s on Friday’s, tickling the ivories once again. Tony, we welcome you to the family that is Mad Terry@Buzby’s.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
e Pact s a movie critic, I have A to watch many movies and sometimes, I´m not in
Director: Nicholas McCarthy Starring: Caity Lotz, Casper Van Dien , Agnes Bruckner Director Nicholas McCarthy has in fact made “The Pact” twice. His haunted house horror started life as a short film which played at the 2011 Sundance festival, causing such a stir that he was offered the money to make it into a full feature – only three days after it was screened. So does this mini masterpiece translate when transformed into a longer, bigger feature film?
The answer, thankfully is ‘yes’, with “The Pact” putting its audience through a grueling ghost story with enough genuine chills and scares to excuse its otherwise formulaic features and story line. The story follows Annie (Death Valley’s Caity Lotz), a troubled girl with a dark past forced to return to her unhappy family home after the death of her mother.
McCarthy, who also wrote “The Pact”, crafts a creepy movie which delivers some truly disturbing moments throughout with some innovative ideas employed to scare the viewer, subtly shot with minimal special effects for maximum effectiveness.
pieces and other above average elements it is a very competent directorial debut. It follows in the rich vein of “The Innkeepers” and “Insidious” as a modern day ghost story, spooky and scary enough to deserve your attention.
As mentioned, The Pact’s plot line and some of its motifs may have been seen and used before, but given the imaginative set

e Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Act Of Valour
Release date: June 2012
Release date: July, 2012
Director: John Madden Starring: Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel follows a group of British retirees who decide to "outsource" their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past. There is nothing challenging in the film – just a vast travelogue enticing the viewer to come to Jaipur
Director: Scott Waugh Starring: Alexander Asefa, Jeffrey Barnachea & Kenny Calderon
Act of Valour, stars activeduty Navy SEALs who take you deep into the secretive world of the most elite, highly trained and deadly group of warriors in modern combat.
at the first opportunity. Most of the stories end well – sometimes improbably but it doesn't matter. There is no pretence that this is real life – just two hours of pure fun, laughs, comedy and sadness mixed in together. It's colourful and vibrant. It provokes the odd thought without being too demanding.
When the rescue of a kidnapped CIA operative leads to the discovery of a deadly terrorist plot, a team of SEALs are dispatched on a global manhunt. As the men race to stop a coordinated attack that could kill and wound thousands of innocent civilians, they must balance their commitments to country, team, and families back home.
Based on real events, the film combines stunning combat sequences, up-tothe minute battlefield technology and heartpumping emotion for the ultimate action adventure.
the mood. I wasn´t in the mood, when “Kiss Kiss, Bang, Bang” was thrown my way, I was doing everything possible to avoid this movie. I wasn´t sold on the title, I had no idea what it was about, I´m not big into Val Kilmer (it´s that constant pout) and Robert Downey Jr, who up until 2005 was a B actor. So, as you can imagine, I was already saying to myself: “I don´t like this film.” n the video player it goes, Inever press play and…..Wow! I knew Robert Downey Jr could act! Goodness knows, why I was avoiding this film, because it is brilliant, it´s a modern classic. This is how I learned my lesson, now I never avoid movies I´ve never heard of (though perhaps sometimes, I should). Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” is a “about dark comedy / thriller Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.), a petty thief who stumbles his way into a movie audition and goes to Los Angeles. At Los Angeles, Harry meets Perry Van Shrike (Gay Perry, played by Val Kilmer) and runs into his high school crush, Harmoney. Gay Perry is a consultant for the detective movie that Harry is to be starring in, and while they are out on a stake-out the two end up on a murder scene. Soon, the three all end up trying to solve the murder. hat makes this film W stand out, is the way it´s been put together. Downey does the commentary all the way through the movie which makes this one of the film’s strengths – he addresses the audience directly, corrects himself a few
times, and basically just makes a really funny story even better. He makes you feel like someone is really telling you a story, instead of just saying "here, watch this". Also, this film has kind of a ‘50s detective feel to it. t starts with him at a party Iheand then, he explains how got to the party – which is one of my favourite scenes. The police are chasing him and he runs into an audition room, pretends to be an actor and the cop who was on his tail busts in and says: “Sorry, good luck!” and walks out. he dialogue is witty and TRobert the chemistry between Downey Jr and Val Kilmer is amazing, they seem to bounce off one another. Most of the jokes go by so fast that you'll have to see this movie again to see what you missed. As I said earlier, I don´t really rate Kilmer or Downey Jr. as actors, but they were both unbelievable, Val Kilmer outdid himself as Gay Perry – he took the role and just ran with it. Downey Jr. was even better, he rocks the screen, his performance literally lifts your spirits, he is alive on so many levels. nfortunately, in 2005 U this movie was overlooked and under rated, you probably never got to see it, so you´ll have to go and look for it. But this has to be one of my favourite crime/thriller/comedies of all time. I seriously recommend this movie to anyone with a sense of humour. It will have you giggling from beginning to end.

Lettuce, which is a good source of vitamin A and potassium, is not just for a salad, you’ll be amazed how tasty cooked lettuce can be! This recipe comes to us once again from Ian Wooldridge, Head Chef at Kimbridge Farm, near Romsey
Braised Lettuce with Slow Roasted Chicken Ingredients:
(Serves 4)
• • • • • • • •
4 large chicken legs 150ml of dry white wine 1 teaspoon of dried thyme A little salt and pepper 4 gem lettuce (or small romaine) 500ml of chicken stock 1 tablespoonful of olive oil 4 slices of streaky bacon (about 180200 grams), cut widthways into strips • 1 small onion, peeled and finely diced • Salt & freshly milled black pepper • Olive oil
Directions Place the chicken into a roasting dish and add the wine. Next, sprinkle over the dried thyme and season with a little salt and pepper. Cover the roasting dish with baking foil, being careful not to touch the foil against the chicken. Roast in the oven at 180˚C (160˚C fan)/Gas Mark 4 for 2 hours. Remove the foil and return the chicken to the oven for a further 45 minutes. When cooked, set aside and cover again with foil to keep warm. Meanwhile, thoroughly wash the gem lettuce and remove and discard any outer leaves that may not be in good condition. Place these snugly into another roasting dish and then pour in the chicken stock. Now heat
the olive oil in a frying pan and then add the bacon. Fry the bacon until it becomes crispy (about 5 minutes) and remove it to a dish using a slotted spoon. To the remaining fat, add the onions. Gently cook the onions until they become soft and translucent (about 3-4 minutes). Mix the cooked bacon and onions together and sprinkle over the gem lettuce. Season the lettuce well with plenty of salt and pepper and drizzle over a little olive oil. Cover with foil and bake in the oven at 200C (180C fan)/Gas Mark 6 for 20 minutes. Serve immediately with the chicken and some potatoes of your choice.

Why try to fit in Aquarius when you of all signs were born to stand out? You walk in the world in your own way as you would rather remain independent instead of conforming to the masses. Usually, ahead of your time, you bring the future into our minds. You could have a second chance of shining; an opportunity begun in the past, but not taken up, is likely to resurface. What might have seem lost before, now becomes realistic.
Anything is possible right now Pisces, nothing is too great or too big. Something could materialise in your financial arena, however, it will probably be in conjunction with another story or party. Spine manipulation People 'taking more ‘inadvisable’ food risks' A group of chiropractors writing in the British Medical Journal have said a common chiropractic treatment for neck pain, which involves applying thrusts to the neck area of the spine, should be abandoned. Spinal manipulation can be used to treat neck and back pain or other musculoskeletal conditions. It is a technique used by physiotherapists, osteopaths and most commonly by chiropractors. Cervical spine manipulation focuses on the neck and involves a range of highspeed manual manoeuvres that stretch, mobilise or manipulate the upper spine in order to relieve pain. The group said cervical spine manipulation "may carry the potential for serious neurovascular complications resulting from damage to the major neck arteries”. They also

said that studies "provide consistent evidence of an association between neurovascular injury and recent exposure to cervical manipulation". Such injuries include tearing the lining of the vertebral artery, which is located in the neck and supplies blood to the brain, and stroke. The group said the technique is "unnecessary and inadvisable". However other chiropractors believe it is a valuable addition to patient care. Writing in the same
edition of the BMJ, another group of chiropractors said spine cervical manipulation should not be abandoned as a treatment for neck pain. They pointed to high quality evidence that "clearly suggests that manipulation benefits patients with neck pain" and raised doubt about any direct relation between manipulation and stroke. However, they want to see more research into the pros and cons of this and other techniques with the aim of identifying safe and effective treatments.
An FSA survey of nearly 2,000 people across the UK suggested more than half were trying to make better use of leftover food. This included ignoring use-by dates, as well as keeping leftovers in the fridge for long periods of time. An FSA spokesman said: "With most of us seeing our weekly shopping bills increase over the last few years, we are all looking for ways to get the most out of our shopping budget. "Using leftover food is a good way of making our meals go further. However, unless we're careful, there's a chance we can risk food poisoning by not storing or handling them properly." The FSA survey found that a third of people were
Diet foods that can make you fat lJuices
and smoothies count towards your daily intake of fruit but supplementing meals with these sugary fruit drinks could add hundreds of extra calories on to your daily intake. Smoothies and juices contain more sugar but less fibre than whole fruit, making fresh fruit a much better snacking option. lCereal
bars are packed with cane sugar and corn syrup, as well as high levels of fat. In fact, despite their healthy image, cereal bars can contain as much fat, sugar and calories as an average chocolate bar, and can cause crashes in blood sugar levels which will leave you craving more food. lDried fruit has many beneficial properties and counts towards your daily
intake of fruit. However, due to the concentration of sugars that occurs when fruit is dehydrated, it is also very high in calories and sugar when compared to the same amount of fresh fruit, and is much lower in fibre and nutrients. On top of this, many brands add sugar to dried fruit to improve the flavour, which boosts the calorie content even further. lSalads
are generally presented as the “healthy option” but this is often not the case. While salads contain vegetables and other healthy ingredients, these are often buried under a layer of oily, sugary dressings which can be high in both fat and calories. Avoid those sneaky calories by drizzling your salads with a light dressing such as balsamic

On top of that, many soups are very high in salt, which can lead to bloating. To help stay trim and cut calories, try purchasing (or better yet, making your own) vegetable based and cream-free soups. lHummus is often perceived as the perfect diet-friendly dip. COLOURS ARE FABULOUS FOR THIS SUMMER - BRIGHT SUNSHINE COLOURS TO GO WITH THE HEAT
Here it comes again … and here’s a few tips on how to wear this season’s neons Every so often fashion comes round again and this time it’s the turn of the neon colours for the summer. Lime greens, bright yellows and oranges, pinks that make you blink, they’re all there for this season. However, do not go and wear head to toe neons – you’ll end up with people thinking you’re working on the roads and trying to make sure people see you before running you over! As with every fashion, there’s a trick to making it work. With neon the idea is to introduce solid colours to go with it so, for instance, with an amazingly pink top, add white for during the day and black for the evening skirt or trousers and it’ll look fantastic.
The same add ons work for most of the neons but you could try adding a bit of beige or camel colour. Bright turquoise goes very well with a camel colour and looks extremely smart. If you can find sleeveless silk shirts complete with patch pockets in these colours, the classic design of these is perfect for coolness for the office or out and about. However, if you are of a certain age, unless you still have a fabulous figure, avoid shorts in neons. Don’t even bother asking your partner: “Does my bum look big in this?” In these colours the answer will be “Yes, darling, absolutely huge” and they won’t be lying! If you must wear shorts, go
for dark colours, on the knee length and team with bright tops. That way you’ll get away with it and, don’t forget, if you are a little on the large side – we can’t all be skinny super-model beanpoles after all – wear the top over the shorts and not tucked in. Tucking it in will just accentuate the bits you want to hide and by leaving the top over the shorts you’ll end up with a more sylph-like silhouette. And before you ask, there are extremely few people on this planet that could get away with the multicoloured neon outfit Cheryl Cole wore this week. Don’t even go there!
Party, party, party
It’s that time of year when you find yourself being invited to graduation ceremonies, weddings, anniversaries and all manner of events where you have to make an effort and get out of your T-Shirt and baggy linens. So, what do you go for? Well, unless you can go classic with the neons that are this year’s colours as
mentioned above, smart is the only option. For the chaps, you can’t beat a black suit but, in this heat ... not really an option unless you happen to be the graduate or groom. A nice, lightweight jacket is acceptable and with a pure white linen shirt underneath looks great. Unless it is a suit though, don’t go for two different beiges or khakis – unless there is a vast difference in the shades, you end up either looking as if you’ve worn one part of a suit more than the other and it’s faded or like Lofty in “It ain’t Half Hot Mum”! For the ladies during the day, a simple shift dress (left) for whatever the occasion teamed with (if your feet can stand them) high strappy sandals always looks great without you either looking like the poor relation or terribly overdone. The shift works for every occasion. If it’s a “Black Tie” do, try rummaging through the Corte Ingles’ end-of-line shops for a real bargain. It’s a bit like going through a jumble sale until you
manage to come up with the one dress in the shop that is perfection personified. I found a long gown that was strapless, white at the top with a full black skirt for just €40 in the Coin branch – reduced from over €400 ... bargain of the year or what? Lastly, over 18? DO NOT WEAR baby doll styles. You’ll look like you’re going to entirely the wrong sort of party and they make you look incredibly chunky even when you’re not. Yeuk! by Jane Newman
Cheryl’s lurid neon outfit – definitely not for most of us!
New designs for H&M shoppers in November After teaming up with major fashion labels Lanvin, Versace and most recently Marni, H&M have now confirmed their next collaboration is with Maison Martin Margiela. The Swedish high street giant revealed that the oneoff collection from their latest guest designer will launch in 230 H&M stores worldwide and online for men and women on 15th November 2012 The fashion crowd has a huge admiration for Margiela – fans of the ready-to-wear line include Rihanna, Michelle Obama, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kanye West.
Soggy ceremony? Artistic Director Danny Boyle has revealed some details of the £27 million opening ceremony for the 2012 Olympic Games in London on July 27th. Saying that “it is a green and pleasant land” he will be turning the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, East London into an English countryside complete with people having a picnic, sports on the village green, farmers working the soil and three cows, 12 horses, two goats, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, nine geese, 70 sheep and three sheep dogs wandering about. Oh yes, and there’s even going to be clouds raining down making the whole thing a soggy mess!
The ceremony is being described as "one of the largest sets ever built". With 10,000 volunteers, cast and crew rehearsing for the big event there’s also a salute to Britain’s big festivals such as the Proms and Glastonbury including “mosh pits” for the public. Installation of all the equipment needed will begin in the Olympic Stadium soon. These include 1,200 automated lamps, 1,000 conventional lamps and 500 LED fixtures. There will also be a million-watt sound system using more than 500 speakers and 50 tonnes of associated gear.

Veronique Nedelec Let me state that I am not a smoker, but I would like to defend the smokers. First they have a right to smoke or not – even more so since they pay heavy taxes every time they buy a packet. Most important – all the jobs they generate but of course for a person like H. Reynolds, does she or all the others who go on and on about this
subject care not in the least.

All these people who eat animals have they ever been in a slaughter house to hear when the animals approach crying and screaming knowing full well what awaits them? The odor of blood tells them all.
To sit somewhere and see people eating burnt bacon swimming in fat with the egg yolk on top makes me sick and the horrible dreadful smell. I prefer by far to inhale or smell someone smoking near
Kathleen MacNamarra Thank you so much for your article last week on the little boy who fell in love with a donkey. It was such a pleasant change to hear of something good going on in the world and all power to the little boy who rode his bike up the mountain and back to raise money for his beloved donkey. I was so impressed by the article that I went to the Donkey Breeding Sanctuary last Sunday but I have to say that I found it rather difficult to find. I got a bit lost but luckily had taken my copy of The News with the article in so was able to telephone the lady who runs the sanctuary for further instructions and, once there found quite a few other people had read this same article and

were there – including your editor! The lady and gentleman who run it are absolutely charming and were very happy to show us around and introduce us to these wonderful giant donkeys. I understand that they are trying to breed the same line of mules that helped the British soldiers move their heavy equipment during the First World War. They have a beautiful white mare that they are pairing with one of their giant donkeys. These animals are apparently almost extinct and the British Army have no more of the line. I would like to wish them well in their endeavours and thank The News for telling us about this place. Editor says: Indeed it is a great place to visit. C will find another photo of Curtis, the boy who rode up the mountain with Marlene who runs the place, plus better instructions on how to get there - it’s easy when you know how! The breeding programme for the mules is fantastic and good for me to hear as my grandfather was one of the “drivers” in the first world war who spent his time in France looking after and working with these mules. It would be absolutely tragic if the line ended here. Also, they need help from someone with a digger to move some earth so that they will be able to have a training ring –- so, if you have a bit of time and a digger, have a look at the article aforementioned and you’ll see that we at The News are giving away a free night, bed and breakfast, at the Tamisa Golf Hotel for whoever carries out the digging for them – free of charge of course!

Poppycock! All this muttering on about smoking recently really gets my goat! I will say right now that I am a smoker of some 40 years now – ten a day on average – and I have never smoked in a restaurant, office, or any other enclosed space because I am lucky enough to posess a rare and wonderful thing. It’s called common manners! I do not expect other people to have to smoke the cigarette I have lit and am happily puffing on and why should they? Personally, I don’t like all manner of things and I would be exceptionally upset if those that enjoy other habits, such as drinking gin for example insist that I do.
Yes, I smoke, but I have been teetotal for over 15 years and it is very rare that someone has tried to force a drink on me. True, some find it odd that living in Spain where booze is so cheap that I don’t drink but, that’s my choice and others, on the whole, respect that. Imagine if I was in a bar with friends and someone tried to force alcohol down my throat. It would be an utter outrage so, why do us smokers think we have the right to force our smoke up into the airways of others. It doesn’t make any sense at all and it seems to me that what is missing in a lot of areas these days is common manners and common sense. Perhaps this will help people think before they moan!

or centuries, before maps, compasses and sat navs were invented the only way for people to find their way around the world was by using the Sun and the stars. The Sun is the most obvious and easiest to use as it rises in the east and sets in the west so that gives you two reference points to work from. If you stand with your right hand pointing sunrise and your left hand pointing sunset then you must be facing north and directly behind you is south. o that’s ok if you’ve got all day to wait from sunrise to sunset, but there is a simpler method to find north that I learned in the boy scouts. If you have an analogue watch i.e. one with hands, lay the watch on a flat surface and point the hour hand at the Sun, now find the point exactly half way between the hour hand and the number 12 and this will mark the exact north/south line. If your watch is set to daylight saving time bisect the angle between the hour hand and the one o'clock mark instead.
F
inding north at night time is even easier – use the North Star! By pure luck there just happens to be a star that is positioned almost directly over the North Pole of the Earth. This star is called Polaris, the Pole Star or the North Star, whichever you prefer. It is the tail star in the constellation of Ursa Minor, the Little Bear. Whenever I ask people which is the brightest star in the sky they invariably name the North Star, but unfortunately the North Star is not particularly bright at all, in fact it is only the 45th brightest star in the sky.
I
ts importance comes because of its unique position directly over the North Pole. As the Earth spins on its axis throughout the night (and day) then while all the other stars appear to carve an arc across the sky the North Star is always in exactly the same position –due North. So by finding the North Star you will know that you are facing due north.
inding the North Star is quite simple even though it is not particularly prominent. First find another constellation called The Plough. The Plough, or Big Dipper as the Americans call it, always looks like a huge saucepan to me with three stars marking the curved handle and another four stars forming the crooked square of the bowl. As The Plough is so close to the North Star then it is always visible from northern latitudes no matter what time of the year it is. ow find the two stars that are at the furthest end of the ‘Bowl’ of The Plough, these are known as The Pointers. If you follow an imaginary line from The Pointers to the right about four times the distance between them then the first star that you come to is the North Star.
I
magine the North Star as being the centre of a celestial clock and The Plough being the hour hand of the clock travelling in an anti-clockwise direction around the North Star. At this time of the year in the early evening The Plough can be found with the ‘bowl’ pointing downwards and the ‘handle’ pointing up and curving away to the left. On our celestial clock The Plough is currently in the 9 o’clock position in relation to the North Star, three months from now it can be found below the North Star in the 6 o’clock position. Around the beginning of the year it will have moved to the right of the North Star and in early spring it is above the North Star at the 12 o’clock point. But no matter where it is in the sky the two Pointers will always point toward the North Star.
P
eople living in the southern hemisphere don’t have the benefit of a South Star marking due south for them, it’s just their hard luck I’m afraid.

Vauxhall announce pricing for Mocca SUV vauxhall will expand its already broad range later this year with the addition of the Mokka SUV, which was made available to order from Friday 8th June at a starting price of just £16,995. The new model will enter the growing sub-compact SUV B-segment, and despite its compact 4.28 metre length it can accommodate five adults in comfort. Its key rivals will be cars like the Skoda Yeti and from Nissan, the Juke and Qashqai. Like all Vauxhalls, the Mokka comes with Vauxhall Lifetime Warranty.
Hamilton and McLaren get it just right Lewis Hamilton fought back from third place to claim victory in the Canadian Grand Prix becoming the seventh different winner in as many races in 2012. The Briton had led from the first round of pit-stops, but ceded the advantage to Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel when his McLaren team assured him that both of his rivals would also be stopping. When they continued into the closing stages, however, Hamilton had to pass both on the road in order to make it back to the front – a feat which he accomplished by
lapping a second faster with every lap and catching Vettel eight laps from home and Alonso two laps later. Red Bull and Ferrari were both handed further evidence that their strategy was not the right one, as
Vettel pitted a lap after being passed for second, dropping to fifth before a
brush with the Wall of Champions almost claimed him, and Alonso dropped off the podium as both Romain Grosjean and Sergio Perez surged past the Ferrari in the final four laps. Vettel then also caught and passed the championship leader at the hairpin to avoid losing further ground in the overall standings. The result moves Hamilton into the championship lead, two points ahead of Alonso, who is one ahead of Vettel. Alonso eventually crossed the line in fifth, just 0.4secs ahead of Nico Rosberg, with Mark
Webber, Kimi Raikkonen, Kamui Kobayashi and Felipe Massa completing the scorers.

Lee Westwood warms up Butterfly Children’s Charity Golf and Ball Raises €32.700 for US Open with win Lee Westwood completed his warmup for the U.S. Open by winning the Nordea Masters by five shots on Saturday. Westwood's final round of 3-under 69 gave him a total of 19-under 269 at the Bro Hof Slott Golf Club. His 22nd European Tour victory also was his third win in the Scandinavian Masters, following wins in 1996 and 2000. Fellow Englishman Ross Fisher finished second with three late birdies for a 71. Westwood, the highestranked player in the field at No. 3, came to Sweden carrying a new set of irons and a new putter in his bag just a week before the U.S. Open. The irons and putter will travel on with him to the Olympic Club in San Francisco. "They are staying in the bag," Westwood said. "I am going to take a lot of positives to San Francisco. I have played really well
here this week. You don't win by five shots not playing well. "I missed a few short putts on the front nine, but I had a lot of chances and when there was pressure on me, I made a great eagle at the 12th hole." After missing five putts of under 10 feet in the first 10 holes, Westwood, who led by three overnight, watched his lead drop to two shots first by Sergio Garcia, then by Sweden's Peter Hanson and by Fisher. But at the par-5 12th, he put daylight between himself and the rest of the field as he hit a brilliant 6-iron to 10 feet and holed the putt for an eagle. Hanson, looking to add a third straight home victory at the event following Alexander Noren's success last year and Richard Johnson's win in 2010, launched an early challenge. On the first

green the Swede holed a 50-foot eagle putt. But his chances of victory were dashed when he drove into water at the 15th and made double bogey. Garcia moved up the leaderboard early with a 67. "Now I am heading there having played my best golf for months," he said of the U.S. Open. Fisher's victory hopes were dashed when he found water and ran up a double bogey at the 13th. But three closing birdies allowed him to take outright second at 14 under.
Rafael Nadal claimed a record seventh French Open title after ending Novak Djokovic's bid to hold all four grand slams. After rain forced the final to be suspended on Sunday, the world No. 2 returned to the court on Monday to complete a 6-4 6-3 2-6 7-5 victory to surpass Bjorn Borg's record of six titles at Roland Garros. Nadal trailed by a break of serve in the fourth set when play resumed on Monday, and with more rain forecast, Nadal was keen to get the match wrapped up in a timely fashion. Djokovic, 5-4 down held serve to stay in the match, but Nadal turned defence into attack to bring up championship point, and he was gifted the title after a double fault from Djokovic.
The “Butterfly Children” charity golf tournament and ball held this Saturday at the Aloha Golf Club has managed to raise over thirty thousand euros in spite of the general situation of acute financial crisis. This has been possible thanks to 147 golfers who participated in the tournament during the day, together with 155 people who attended the dinner and ball. Not to forget all the sponsors and collaborators who have maintained their support to the Butterfly Children on its 10th anniversary. The prize-giving ceremony took place on the terrace of the Aloha Golf Club where 10 winners (five

Chelsea told to cough up £20m for Malaga’s Rondon Chelsea are tracking Malaga striker Salomon Rondon as they consider options for replacing Didier Drogba. Arsenal and Newcastle have also shown interest in the imposing Venezuela star, but have been put off by a £20million asking price. France are now unbeaten in 22 games but England are likely to come away happier with the point, after a buildup hit by injuries to key players like Frank Lampard and a suspension for Wayne Rooney. "All in all we're satisfied with the point," said captain Steven Gerrard. The match was played in energy sapping hot conditions of 90º (funny how these sort of conditions follow England to the big tournaments). England took

the lead when Gerrard curled in a free kick from the right after Patrice Evra had fouled James Milner, and Lescott was able to nod the ball past France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. France's equaliser was all about one-touch football as Florent Malouda, Evra and Franck Ribery flicked the ball around the left side of England's penalty area to free up space for Nasri, who put in a low shot before England goalkeeper Joe Hart
could react. One thing missing on the night though was the familiar sound of The Great Escape after the England band were denied entry to the stadium. Despite assurances from the Football Association and Uefa, the band were not allowed to bring their instruments into the Donbass Arena. It was the first time they have been refused entry to a game and no reason was given for the decision, although band
The other two sides in England’s group also played on Monday night with Ukraine getting the better of Sweden with a 2-1 win. Andriy Shevchenko was their two-goal-hero on the night. Sweden goalscorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who also saw a header hit the post in the first-half, said: "We have three games to play here, it's not just one game. "There's still two games left and we still have the two games to get a result. We need to play a better game than we did today." Sweden are England’s next opponents on Friday night, while Ukraine play France in the earlier slot. The biggest game of the tournament so far comes tonight (Weds), when The Netherlands take on Germany in the ‘group of death’.

In the afternoon there was more singing and a game of beach cricket between the ladies and the men, which of course was won by the ladies! Festivities finished just after 5pm with a good time
being had by all. Following the event, we were delighted to receive the support of Fuengirola Scouts on Explorer Wednesday to unstitch and roll-up the East Green in anticipation of the arrival of the new green towards the end of this month. It really wouldn't have happened without their efforts. This enabled the remedial work to the base to be carried out on Thursday and those that were at Club day on Friday were able to witness how true the base now is. We anticipate having two excellent bowling surfaces from early July.

US Open: Paul Casey replaced by 14 year old Andy Zhang A 14-year-old will replace injured Englishman Paul Casey in this year's US Open which starts on Thursday. China-born but Florida-based Andy Zhang, who had missed out on qualifying in his own right in a play-off, is the competition's youngest player since the Second World War. Casey, 34, dislocated his shoulder snowboarding on Christmas Eve and is not fully fit to play. Zhang, who was second reserve, beats the record of Tadd Fujikawa, who was 15 when he qualified for the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot.

Cuban Boxer Teofilo Stevenson dies. Former Cuban heavyweight boxer Teofilo Stevenson, who won three Olympic gold medals, has died at the age of 60. State media said he had suffered a heart attack. In the 1970s, US boxing promoters offered Stevenson $5m (£3m) to turn professional and fight then world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. But the boxer stayed loyal to the Cuban revolution, which outlawed professional sports, and refused. He said: "I prefer the affection of eight million Cubans." He went on to win gold medals as a heavyweight in three consecutive Olympic Games – 1972, 1976 and 1980, and was widely considered the greatest amateur boxer of his time.
