WORLD NEWS -”NOT MEANT TO BE A FINAL BLUEPRINT”
EU unveils vision for the future of monetary union Just one day after Spain formally requested billions of euros in aid for a banking sector battered by the country’s real estate collapse and on the eve of a crucial summit meeting of European leaders in Brussels, European authorities unveiled on Tuesday their vision for the future – almost in defiance of the widespread belief that nothing new will come
out of meeting.

ICKHAM’S
WORLD EU unveils vision for the future Well done!
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
Last week I told you that I would let you know what happened with the digger and the donkeys. Well, true to his word Simon Morris who owns Costa diggers turned up, did the work and was apparently a lovely, charming, efficient and polite man so, well done you! Simon has gained himself a night’s stay at the Tamisa Golf Hotel, Mijas Costa, bed and breakfast for two and, if you want any digging done, call him on 678 450 051 or email him at simon.morris@costadigg ers.com Lainey’s Restaurant on Sierra Gorda in Coin has their new kitchen equipment in, and will be open for food from midday every day except Tuesday from tomorrow, Thursday. Great fish and chips will be on the menu and we look forward to seeing what the rest of the menu will entice us with. Last weekend was incredibly busy again but we hope to be able to catch up with some gardening and, of course, cleaning (oh, joy!) this weekend. We have had word from a lot of the charities that they are seriously struggling to stay open in the present economic climate. None of us has the amounts of spare cash that used to be available to give to the charities but, even a few pennies collected in a jar at home when you empty your pockets at night could make all the difference between keeping going and having to close – it is a very real and very “now” problem for them all so, if you’ve got a couple of euros going spare, every little helps!
Mr Van Rompuy said it was "not meant to be a final blueprint", but that he expected "to reach a common understanding amongst us on the way forward" at Thursday and Friday's summit. European Commission President Mr Barroso said the guiding principle was that "greater solidarity and greater responsibility must go hand in hand". Earlier, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble also called for there to be a European finance minister, with the power to veto national budgets as well as an elected president of Europe. French, German, Spanish and Italian finance ministers met on Tuesday to discuss closer union. French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici has said Thursday's EU summit should, "lay the groundwork for the second phase of the euro".

Francois Hollande.
One of the big changes under the new proposals is that while in the past eurozone members had to keep their budget deficits below a certain level, a European treasury will now be able to force them to make changes to their budgets to keep their deficits down.
On Tuesday, Cyprus added to the nervousness about the euro when it told the European authorities that it intends to apply for financial assistance, the fifth eurozone member to do so. It said it needs help to shore up its banks, which are heavily exposed to the Greek economy. A government spokesman, Stefanos Stefanou, said the amount of European aid would be subject to negotiations in the coming days, and that despite the request, the Cypriot government would continue negotiations for a possible loan from a country outside the EU, such as Russia or China. The country has already borrowed €2.5bn euros from Russia, whose business people are important customers of Cyprus's relatively large offshore financial sector which offers low tax rates.
Manwhile on Monday the financial markets plunged in response to Spain’s formal application for up to €100 billion in aid for its banks because it did not specify exact sums or conditions which are still the subject of negotiation. The Spanish government wants the aid to go directly from the euro zone’s bailout funds to the banks but euro zone rules require that the aid be funnelled through the government in Madrid, which would add to Spain’s sovereign debt.
Last Friday, leaders of the eurozone's four biggest nations – Germany, France, Italy and Spain – agreed in principle to measures to boost growth equal to 1% of the currency area's economic output, outlining plans to push for a €130bn package. "We want there to be a significant European growth package," said Italian PM Mario Monti when he appeared at the press conference alongside Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President
After the talks, Mr Monti asserted in English that "the euro is here to stay, and we all mean it". French President Francois Hollande, who made agreement of a European growth pact the central plank of his election platform last month, said the four eurozone leaders had "made the prospect for growth much more concrete", asking whether anyone would have imagined a few weeks ago that the idea of growth would be on the agenda of the EU summit.
WEATHER WEATHER
The four met in Rome ahead of an EU summit on the euro crisis next week. The agreement represented a political victory for the recently elected French president who has demanded a growth pact despite strong reservations expressed by his Germany counterpart. However, at the end of less than two hours of talks, they did not reach any agreement on the idea of eurobonds – jointlybacked eurozone government debts used to finance EU government budgets. Mr Monti had warned his EU peers that failure to agree on joint action would encourage market attacks on their economies. He had predicted "progressively greater speculative attacks" without unified action from all the eurozone members.
The French president said the four had also agreed to push for a pan-European tax on financial transactions – also known as a Tobin tax – another of the French President's election pledges. The idea is opposed by the UK government, who says it would hurt the City of London unless the tax were also implemented in other non-European international financial centres, as well as by Sweden.
US backs Spain At the closing of the XVII Spain United States Forum in New York last week,
She added: “What happens in Madrid and Barcelona has repercussions in Milwaukee and Ohio.” She said the US supports the steps Spain is taking. It was the end of a four-day working visit by Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia with the object of strengthening business and trade ties between the two countries.
Moody's downgrades banks The ratings agency Moody's has cut the credit rating on 28 of Spain's banks, one day after the country asked for money to support them. The move follows a cut to the Spanish government's own credit rating to just above junk status earlier this month. Among the downgrades was a cut to Banco Santander. Its long-term rating was cut to Baa2 from A3 and that rating is itself under review for a possible further downgrade. But Moody's kept Santander

one notch above the sovereign rating of Baa3, the Moody's release noted, because of the bank's geographic diversity and what it sees as its manageable exposure to Spanish sovereign debt. Santander's UK arm is a standalone business and depositors' money is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme in the UK. Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Agentaria (BBVA) was also among those whose ratings were cut.

‘Difficult’ reforms Reduced VAT rate may rise still to come He simply said the reforms would be “difficult” and would arrive “soon, before the end of the year”, adding that the government was willing to “correct what needs to be corrected and reform what needs reforming”. Rajoy also called for the EU countries to decide on the measures necessary to save the euro and deal with the banking and sovereign debt crisis. “The political message must be emphatic and the calendar for integration needs to be clear,” he said, after stating that one of his objectives was the creation
of “a joint European agency for debt and issues” – that is, eurobonds. CEOE president Juan Rosell called on the government to go even further than it already has with labour market reforms. Later this week, Parliament is due to approve wide-ranging changes to the labour laws which, among other things, make it cheaper to fire employees. Rosell said: “We need to make the Spanish labour market one of the most flexible in Europe.” Rosell also played down the problem of unemployment in Spain,
which is currently running at 24.3 percent. “When we talk about Spain, and we compare it with other countries, it would be good if we made a few observations: firstly that our figures include the early-retired as unemployed; secondly, that the use of part-time contracts here is half the figure in Germany; thirdly, that the rate of women in work has risen 18 points in 30 years; fourth, that of the 10 million foreigners who entered the EU 15 countries between 1998 and 2008, 50 per cent of them came to Spain.”
Finance Ministry sources said on Monday that it is studying areas where the value-added tax (VAT) hikes recommended by Brussels may be applied, which means people may soon be paying up to 18 per cent on certain goods and services that until now have enjoyed a reduced and super-reduced rate. The current reduced eight-per cent rate is applied to the most food and health products, land transport, and concert, movie and museum tickets. The super-reduced four percent rate is for basic foodstuffs such as milk, fruit and vegetables. The European Commission and the IMF have recommended that Spain adjust VAT on certain products and services but

Miners march on Madrid Some 200 miners from Asturias began a long march to Madrid on Saturday, where they will meet up with other groups of miners from Leon, Teruel, Palencia and Puertollano on July 11th. The march has so far passed without incident although the miners’ month-long strike saw daily clashes between them and the police with barricades of burning tyres blocking major roads in the mining areas. Meanwhile, a group of miners’ wives and daughters were thrown out of the Upper House of Parliament in Madrid after trying to stage a demonstration there last week. In 2010, the European Union decided that government subsidies to the mining sector were to be gradually phased out over a period of four years. The government of Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero obtained an extension of four years to 2018, when all subsidies will end, and mining in Spain will also end. Because of high production costs, Spanish coal cannot compete in quality or price with Australia, Colombia, Russia, China and the world's emerging coal power, Mozambique. One contributing factor is the fact that that miners can retire at age 44 on a monthly pension of €2,100.
Demonstration in Langreo
Some 30 per cent of miners take early retirement between the ages of 45 and 49 and another 17 per cent retire before the age of 54. As a result each retired miner costs the Social Security €433,000 on average for the rest of his life. Dictator Francisco Franco predicted 50 years ago when the Asturian miners went on strike in the summer of 1962 that if Spain joined European Economic Community, the country’s mining sector would be finished. Mine closures began soon after Spain joined the EU in 1986 and today there are 8,000 miners left in a
sector that has lost 40,000 jobs over the past 20 years. However, it still accounts for 50,000 direct and indirect jobs. But the miners are fighting a losing battle. The European market for steam coal has been shrinking for years and will continue to do so as aging coal-fired power stations are replaced by gas plants. The environmental groups are also against them, arguing that supporting coal runs counter to government pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions and promote a greener economy, which they claim can also create much-needed jobs.
Crisis cracking country’s highways The Spanish Highways Association (AEC) has warned of the “dangerous deterioration” of highways as a result of government cuts and predicted that accidents would increase in coming years.
AEC engineer Elena de la Peña, who helped write the association’s report, said investment in highway maintenance had dropped from €1,300 million in 2009 to €873 million this year. She said that as a result the road surfaces were in a worse state than they had been 25 years ago. She
added: “Ten or 15 years ago, drivers were blamed for accidents but now its lack of maintenance.” She used the case of Marta Jorgoso as an example. On March 8th last year, Sra Jorgoso lost control of her car on a bend on the A495 in the Sierra Nevada and went over the precipice because the guard rail was missing and had not been replaced because of budget cuts. A similar accident had occured in the same place in August 2010 but the driver survived because the guard rail was in place, Sra del la Peña said.

ETA victim’s sister ‘will never forgive’ Consuelo Ordóñez told a conference on press Sunday that she had not met with the murderer of her brother Gregorio, ETA prisoner Valentin Lasarte, on Saturday to hear him ask for forgiveness but to ask him to collaborate with the government to help identify the ETA terrorists involved in around 300 unsolved crimes. She said she told Lasarte he had killed the only person who could forgive him. “What we’re seeking is justice not vengeance,” she told reporters, adding that it was the government and not the victims of ETA who should be demanding the prisoners’ cooperation as part of their reinsertion into society. Gregorio Ordóñez, a Partido Popular member of the Basque Parliament, was shot in the back of the head
as he had breakfast with his assistant in a San Sebastian café on January 23rd, 1995. The government has said that ETA prisoners who repudiate group’s the violence may receive better conditions but they do not as yet have to ask for forgiveness in public, something that most ETA victims’ groups are demanding.
No impunity On Monday, Justice Minister Alberto RuizGallardon said “the day of impunity has not arrived”. He was referring to the Constitutional Court’s decision to legalise Sortu, a Basque coalition formed by
Consuelo Ordóñez
members of the banned Batasuna party, the political wing of ETA, before last year’s municipal elections. The government banned it from participating because of its links to ETA. RuizGallardon said that the Court’s sentence did not mean that the authorities would give up hunting for ETA members involved in some 300 unsolved crimes.
Aspirin no longer free The Secretary of State for Equality and Social Security José Manuel Moreno said during a television interview on Tuesday that the State will no longer bear the costs of common medications such as aspirin and paracetamol, which patients will have to buy themselves. He said the health system’s deficit currently stood at €16,000 million and reforms would have to be made “or it will go bankrupt”.
will be able to claim back, while other people would be charged according to their tax returns. Unemployed people will be exempt.
As of July 1st, pensioners will have to begin paying up to €8 a month for their medications, which they
Prescription forms currently in use will be used until the new ones which have a box for the
patient’s payment code are printed. Moreno said only regions governed by the Socialist Party would not be implementing the partpayment system for pensioners as of July 1st. Visits to the doctor, blood tests and X-rays will continue to be free.
August in June A Public Works ministry spokesman later said it was studying the AEC’s report and would hold talks with the association on how to maintain the highway network with less money.
The good news is that the current high temperatures will begin to drop on Friday but the bad news is that this is just a foretaste of what’s to come. State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) spokesman Alejandro Lomas has said it looks as if this summer will be hotter
and drier than usual. He said May temperatures had been 2.7 degrees above average even in the north of the country and the trend had continued in June. Meanwhile, rainfall was down by 16 per cent, with no more rain expected until October.
However, Lomas said last year’s rainfall had been abundant enough to cover the drop this year.

the Las Vegas Sands Corporation will make a final decision in early September on where it will build euroVegas, the mega casino and hotel convention centre project, the company’s director general said on Monday. Mike Leven told a news conference that his company still had no favourite between the candidate cities. Company officials were in Barcelona on Monday and Madrid on tuesday to hold more meetings with regional and city authorities. Slated to create an estimated 260,000 jobs while it is being built in three phases over 10 years, euroVegas will be made up of 12 resorts and six casinos, with a total of 18,000 slot machines. Rich premier, poor premier Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy takes home €78,185 a year but some regional premiers earn much more. Catalan regional premier artur Mas earns €122,425, followed by Basque Country premier Patxi Lopez (€97,519) and Madrid Community premier esperanza aguirre (€94,079). at the other end of the scale is Cantabria premier ignacio diego (€59,543), andalucia premier Jose antonio Griñán (€63,808) and asturian premier Javier Fernandez (€63,704). Catalonia and Madrid have introduced savage spending cuts in the current austerity drive. Perhaps their premiers should consider setting an example.

In a letter to the UN Security Council, Turkey has condemned Syria's shooting down of a Turkish military plane last Friday and warned that the incident represents a "serious threat" to regional security. Damascus has said the F-4 jet was shot down inside Syrian airspace. Following the incident, Turkey invoked Article 4 of Nato's founding treaty which entitles any member state to request consultations if it believes its security is threatened.
Plans to legalise marijuana
Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc, speaking after an emergency cabinet meeting on Monday, called the shooting down of the jet "a hostile act of the highest order". He vowed that Syria would "not go unpunished" but added that Turkey had "no intention" of going to war. Tensions between Syria and Turkey rose even higher on Monday when Turkey accused its neighbour of firing on another of its planes. Reports the same day said that several top Syrian army officers and soldiers
defence Minister eleuterio Fernandez Huidobro has said the government intends to pass a ground-breaking law that would allow state-controlled sales of marijuana to adults registered on a database to fight a rise in drug-related crime. He said it was part of a plan to remove profits from drug dealers and divert users from harder drugs. Several Central american leaders – including the presidents of guatemala and Costa rica – have spoken of the need to consider decriminalising some drugs in an attempt to undermine cartels. In his victory speech on Sunday, Mr Mursi, 60, urged Egyptians "to strengthen our national

"There is no room now for the language of confrontation," he said, after the election authorities declared that he had won 51.73% of the vote in the June 16-17th presidential run-off. On hearing the news of his victory, tens of thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters cheered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, chanting, "Down

Search for survivors on hold Ontario province officials have suspended a search for survivors at a shopping centre where a roof collapsed, killing one, on Saturday. police said. Witnesses described the collapse as a "mini-earthquake", which sent water gushing from pipes. The cause of the collapse is unclear, although reports say the shopping centre had with water problems leakage from its roof.

Doctors go on strike
Seasick Welfare
Last Thursday the BMA reported that around 100,000 doctors, or 70% of doctors across the UK, were going on strike for the first time in 37 years (1975 was the last time) despite attempts by government ministers to dissuade them. One patient, Raymond Grade, described the doctors as “pampered” adding that, unlike a lot of people, they already had guaranteed high pensions. Dr Lawrence Buckman said that they were taking action because the government has failed to leave their pension scheme alone despite an agreement made in 2008. Many operations and appointments had to be cancelled. Emergency services were available but regular appointments etc were affected. People who had been waiting months for non-urgent operations such as joint replacements now face another wait in pain.
A British crew member, 61year-old radiographer Lynn Harmer, was injured during a storm in the North Atlantic that hit the 40,000 mile round-the-world Clipper sailing race making it necessary for the craft to detour to Canada for treatment. The yachtswoman suffered head and suspected spinal injuries in the North Atlantic. However, she was later cleared by medics in Newfoundland to re-join her team-mates on the Chinese entry Qingdao, one of 10 British registered identical 68 ft racing yachts. The race, which was established by British sailing legend Robin KnoxJohnston takes amateur sailors from all walks of life and trains them for the voyage which set off from Southampton in July last year and the boat was on it’s way across the Atlantic towards Northern Ireland when Ms. Harmer was injured. The boats will then sail from Northern Ireland, over the top of Scotland to the Netherlands then are expected to start arriving back in Southampton on July 22nd – five days before the opening ceremony of the Olympic games.
The Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: “We have been talking for over a year for a pension scheme that was fair to the tax payer and everyone else. But the BMA accuses government of asking for an ‘unfair’ scheme with doctors being asked to work more and pay more.” From April 2012 a high paid doctor may be paying 9% into the scheme with tax relief bringing it down to 6%. Their final earnings pensions scheme for doctors meant they were getting double from the NHS than nurses etc. An increase of 3,2% across the board in the NHS has to be met due to the extraordinary economical circumstances at the moment. Roughly half the doctors in general practice would get £100,000 a year and consultants getting £150,000 a year. A junior doctor starting out now under the new scheme would get the equivalent of £68,000 a year. They are
also being asked to retire later. Up to 1.5 million GP appointments were cancelled, 30,000 operations, 58,000 diagnostic tests and 200,000 out-patients appointments. Some tweets asked “what happens to those whose appointments are cancelled and an early sign of cancer is missed? It is playing politics with people’s lives.” Accident and emergency departments as well as maternity departments remained working as usual. Doctors surgeries were open but mostly to rearrange appointments with the exception of emergency cases as, for example in a surgery of six doctors, one may have been on duty. However, another estimate said that only about 20% had actually gone on strike, far fewer than the predicted 70%.

Ponies killed Two Shetland ponies were found dead in their field by their owners at 10.30am on Sunday when they went to feed them at Carharrack, near Redruth in Cornwall. Police said that it would appear that the ponies had died as a result of a deliberate attack but are not linking the incident to that of the death of a twoyear-old colt called Eric in nearby Stithians in January who was “horribly mutilated” and was thought to possibly have been part of a ritual killing. They have appealed to all local residents who may have seen something or have heard anything to come forward with information.
reforms not popular New welfare crackdowns laid out by David Cameron in a speech on Monday included the removal of housing benefits for young people which could mean moving back in with parents. 380,000 under 25s share in a purse of £1.8 billion worth, an average £90 a week. One single mother who has just got a job says that she will not be able to afford the new flat she was due to move into this week without the aid of housing benefits. Other benefits to face the chop would be measures to stop the £70 a week dole payment for persons deemed to be not trying hard enough to find work plus there are plans for people that have been on the dole for over two years to do community work or lose their benefits. In an interview at the weekend Mr Cameron said that the present systems were sending out the wrong signals and urged more action to prevent feckless families relying on state handouts while having no intention of working for wages.

‘O’ Level return Bride jailed GCSE’s could be stopped after 2013 according to a document leaked last week with new ‘O’ level style exams being brought back in from 2014 that would concentrate on the sciences, English, maths and history, according to Education Secretary Michael Gove. Those who are not up to the ‘O’ level style exams would take the equivalent of the old CSE’s to enable them to achieve a “worthwhile” qualification”. It was said that the GCSE’s of the last 30 years are virtually worthless due to the “dumming down” of the results with the bar being lowered to such an extent that it is virtually impossible to fail the exams. The highly prized ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels of 30 years ago made it possible for those who had gained them to travel all over the world applying for top jobs. Part of the document described the move as “meeting or exceeding the
highest standards in the world for that age group”. It is expected the plans will set Mr Gove in direct conflict with teaching unions and the Conservatives’ Liberal Democrat partners in the coalition. Pupils will be sitting the first new style exams in 2016 after studying “explicitly harder” during the previous two years to meet the new “gold standard” tests across the country. Mr Gove said that the Conservatives had made an “historic mistake “ in the 1980s with the creation of GCSEs which led to an academic standards collapse through grade inflation of “Mickey Mouse” courses. The sciences will once again be separated instead of being lumped together as in the present sciences single exam. The scheme is expected to be launched in the next two weeks followed by a 12 week consultation process. None of the changes require legislation.

improvements to the couple’s home including a 52” TV, a Tag Heuer watch, an iPod and personalised car registration plates. Her husband was said not to know of the fraud and that she was afraid he would leave her if he found out the truth. The fraud was uncovered by Pure Audio Visual’s managing director, Peter Sutton, for whom she following a worked complaint from a customer about an invoice. Lane had been creating false invoices to siphon off the cash.

A former finance director at a potato supplier in the UK is among three people jailed last week for a £8.7 million fraud involving supermarket giant Sainsbury’s. Andrew Behagg together with director of the company, Greenvale, gave gifts and incentives totalling around £4.9 million to Sainsbury’s potato buyer John Maylem as they feared they might have lost their contract to supply the giant with 45% of their total potato buying that was worth around £40 million. Passing sentence Judge Nicholas Ainsley said at Croydon Crown Court, South London that they may not even have been in danger of losing the contract at all. Maylam, 45 of Bearsted, Maidstone who was jailed for four years closed his eyes as his sentence was passed, while Baxter, 50 of Hinstock, near Market Drayton in Shropshire who was handed down a sentence of 30 month nodded his head slightly. Behagg 60 from Chatteris in Cambridgeshire did not react when he was given three years jail. As he left the dock, he mouthed the words "I love you" to his wife, watching proceedings from the public gallery.

An accident report form is a document which outlines the circumstances which have occurred in a car accident. Development Minister Ana Pastor opened Malaga airport’s second runway – which almost doubles the airport’s capacity from 35 to 65 landings and take-offs – on Tuesday, June 26th.
It is 2,750m long, 45 metres wide, has a 3,090m taxiing lane, and will be able to cope with latest generation planes such as the Airbus 380 and the Boeing 747-700.
Together with the T-3 terminal, opened in 2010, the airport can now handle 9,500 passengers an hour (30 million a year, up from 12.8 million last year). Work started on the runway in 2007 and it cost €407 million to build.
To make room for the runway, the MálagaFuengirola train line went underground and the course of the Guadalhorce river was diverted for 1.5 km.

An average of 65,000 vehicles a day will now have easier access to all destinations west of the town. Just one kilometre long, the tunnel represents a huge jump forward in quality for drivers. A boulevard will be built on the land above the tunnel, giving priority to pedestrians and with lots of green areas. It took five years to build, marked by the difficulty of combining excavation works with traffic flows. Work was often halted because of economic difficulties. One of the first things Development minister Ana Pastor did after she was appointed last November was to meet Marbella mayor Ángeles Muñoz to give the tunnel top priority.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
Future uncertain
When friendship turns rocky
S
I
omething happened last week at the paper that set me thinking. We had a call about 4.30 pm on the Tuesday from a gentleman saying he had heard on a Costa-based English-language radio that the bank bailout had been cancelled. I was already on my way home and page setter Abigail was about send them to the printer. Everything was delayed while we all set about checking the veracity of the information, although I knew the caller had probably heard incorrectly. I didn’t even have to check it out because I’ve been following the unfolding of this particular drama for weeks. However, the incident made me wonder just how much our readers know about the current situation and I concluded – probably not very much.
I
’m one of the very few people I know who doesn’t watch British television, although I read the BBC online every day. However, I watch the Spanish equivalent, TVE’s 24 horas, all my waking hours, and I read four national and three local newspapers online every day as well. So I knew only too well that the EU simply couldn’t cancel the bank bailout because that would mean the end of Spain, which would take Italy and probably France down with it.
I
know many people simply aren’t interested in economics – finding it all too boring and I agree. But it helps if you keep abreast of developments – it gives you the information you need to know when somebody is spouting nonsense or telling it as it is, which they sometimes do. You have to keep an eye on the politicians and what they’re getting up to or you may wake up to a very nasty surprise one morning.
O
n the other hand you have to try to distinguish between informed opinion, responsible reporting and the local bar fly’s pet peeves, theories, predictions, whatever, in order to avoid having a heart attack every other day.
R
eading such a broad spectrum of the Spanish press – from rabidly pro-Left to rabidly right-wing – I know you also have to be aware of what the government wants us to believe and when it’s lying and also to what lengths the opposition will go to to make the government look bad. Right now, the Socialists are trying to make out that Mariano Rajoy is the laughing stock of Europe and they’re also criticising him
for not going into great detail about the conditions of the bailout. However, it’s not up to the borrower to set the conditions but the lender, and hopefully the two sides can come to a satisfactory agreement for both of them.
T
hey’re also ignoring the bigger picture because this little drama isn’t just Spain’s alone. My favourite economist Paul Krugman said in his latest column that Spain is where the fate of Europe will be decided but Europe’s “solution” to Spain’s banking crisis is to lend money to the Spanish government, telling it how to bail out its own banks. “It took financial markets no time at all to figure out that this solved nothing, that it just put Spain’s government more deeply in debt. And the European crisis is now deeper than ever.”
I
t will continue to deepen until the EU gets its act together and comes up with a solution to regulate the banking system in general, reining in the rampant speculation of the banks and the financial markets. And the US should be included in this, seeing that Wall Street is one of the big culprits behind this crisis – ditto the City of London. But the minute you mention “regulation” the banks start screaming about “freedom of action” – for what? For them to speculate with the future prosperity of millions of people in order to be able to make billions, which they then award themselves in bonuses, that’s what!
K
rugman says “Western nations have the resources they need to avoid catastrophe, and indeed to restore prosperity – and we have the added advantage of knowing much more than our great-grandparents did about how depressions happen and how to end them. But knowledge and resources do no good if those who possess them refuse to use them. And that’s what seems to be happening. The fundamentals of the world economy aren’t, in themselves, all that scary; it’s the almost universal abdication of responsibility that fills me, and many other economists, with a growing sense of dread.”
H
owever, recent developments on the economic front seem to offer a glimmer of hope that governments are moving in the direction Krugman would like them to go. Who knows what this week’s summit of EU finance ministers will come up with – or is it that I still believe in miracles?
t was one of those weeks where Spain was on the minds of world leaders, but for all the wrong reasons. For seven days, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy found himself fending off suggestions that the country will eventually need a full bailout. Rajoy had travelled to Mexico for the G20 summit in the Pacific resort of Los Cabos where his global counterparts were expressing their concern that if Spain goes, the entire world goes with it. The scenario was also the backdrop to another revealing episode in which we are seeing a gaping distance between Rajoy and his once admired German ally Angela Merkel over Spanish policy vis-a-vis European demands. The feisty Spanish prime minister almost bitterly refuted during a news conference remarks made by Merkel earlier about the leaders pressing Spain to file its formal petition for bank money as soon as possible. Rajoy said that no one told him this, once again denying that he is under pressure by Brussels. He said that Spain would ask for the money once the independent audits on the Spanish banking system were completed. Those reports, completed by Oliver Wyman and Roland Berger, two of the top audit firms in their field, were released last Thursday showing that Spain would need some €62 billion to recapitalize its banks. But one of the audits came with a caveat: the people at Wyman say they believe that some Spanish banks have misclassified some bad real estate loans – the bellwethers of the banking sector’s health – under different categories making it impossible to take a true temperature at some financial institutions.
O
n Monday, Economy chief Luis de Guindos finally sent over Spain’s formal request to the Eurogroup but did not specify how much he was asking for. Government officials want to hammer out the terms with Brussels, including a favourable interest rate, and continue to push the real powers that be – Germany, the European Central Bank and the IMF – to allow the money to go straight into the banks’ vaults without having to pass through the government’s hands. Like that, the bulging Spanish deficit won’t continue to expand. Even the IMF’s iron lady Christine Lagarde said the eurozone’s rescue funds should go directly to the banks. But Merkel is having none of that. First of all she says it goes against the current European treaties, and secondly Spain by law can only control its banks just as Germany is the sole regulator of German banks – another discrepancy between Rajoy and Merkel. Spanish government officials were hoping to buy time and wait to see what comes out
of this long-awaited summit of European leaders that begins on Thursday. There has been talk that the continental chiefs would come up with a plan that would be favourable for Spain and keep the government from becoming the middleman in this bailout plan.
I
t looks like Germany may be losing patience with Spain, which hopes to gang up on the Berlin government by joining the growth-for-austerity proponents France and Italy in what could be a heated confrontation at this week’s summit. There may not be much in the way of concrete action coming out of the two-day meeting, but it could offer new revelations as to which side is headed toward directing Europe out of the crisis – Germany and its staunch belttightening allies mostly made up from the countries in the north or the up-andcoming second-level economic powers led by France’s François Hollande and Italy’s Mario Monti, joined by johnny-come-lately Rajoy – who are pressing for a Marshall Plan for Europe. Satirically speaking, a possible Spain-German Eurocup final this Sunday would be a sweet avenging scenario for either country to unleash their pent-up frustrations with each other.
We can only hope
C
arlos Dívar finally stepped down. After trying to hold his own for so many months, the chief justice of the Supreme Court became the first head of the judiciary to resign in the 200 years of our nation's legal system. The 70-year-old Dívar had been under pressure to leave the bench after it was discovered he spent about €30,000 of public money for questionable weekend trips to Marbella and other Spanish destinations. Ironically, this entire mess climaxed as the Spanish courts were celebrating their 200th anniversary last week. Dívar had hoped to take centre stage at such a prestigious event – instead he was left with what perhaps has been the most embarrassing episode in his life. Even King Juan Carlos thought it was better that he didn't attend the ceremony with the devious Dívar in attendance. It wouldn’t have been right to be photographed with such a questionable person, especially since the monarch has had a few troubles of his own recently and has been keeping a low profile. So the entire mess in the judiciary is over for now. As Socialist leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba put it: let us hope that our secretive judiciary takes this scandal to heart and begins to realise that transparency is the best way to an honest legal system.

Wimbledon Special report from Animals In Distress Without doubt many of your readers will be sick to their teeth with football so how’s about this for a change? ‘A Song for Wimbledon‘ By Per R Dewar.
(With compliments to the copyright holders of ‘A Song of the Weather’ by Michael Flanders and Donald Swan.)
The majority of the dogs from S.O.S. in Spain will now be relocated to our small refuge in Coin. We decided to help them because they were put into a desperate situation with nowhere permanent for their rescued dogs and they have been looking for a suitable place ever since. The decision works to the advantage of both organisations because we did not have the necessary full-time volunteer help required at our refuge whereas S.O.S. did not have their own refuge but do have their European volunteers and can offer them accommodation during their stay. Volunteers clean, feed, play, walk the dogs and give them company for most of the day. At the same time we will try to find homes for their dogs here and in other countries and
they will in turn try to find homes in Sweden for our foster dogs. A.I.D, as always, will be concentrating on placing new dogs in our ever increasing network of Foster Homes because the majority of dogs we take in are in a badly neglected and abused condition and need to go into foster care. Our aim with the A.I.D. charity is to continue helping and finding homes for stray dogs and to help them in whichever way we can. This includes our ongoing work with helping individuals who do not have any money to help the dogs that they rescue, so whenever possible we supply them with dog food, vaccinate and sterilise some of the dogs under their care. We also help some small charities that are overloaded with dogs and lack the funds. If you wish to help A.I.D by fostering a dog please contact Joe 626942427 or email: animalsindistress 2007@yahoo.co.uk All that we ask is that the dog be treated as part of your family while we are looking for a forever home. Please note
that we will pay for all vets bills, food etc whilst the dog is under your care
ABOUT US: A.I.D. is a registered charity in Andalucia (Nº. 07974) dedicated to finding homes for stray/abandoned/abused animals found in Coin and surrounding villages in this part of Malaga. All the dogs are looked after by our network of volunteer private foster homes as well as in our own home in Coin, which helps the animals get use to a family environment. As well as looking after dogs in our own home we also have a cattery for about 20 cats. Please note that 'we do not take in people’s own pets'. Our mission is to try to find good secure homes for the stray, abandoned, abused animals that we find and look after. At any one time each one of us will foster from one to several animals. Most of our dogs and cats are homed in Spain and a few go to Germany and the UK. In order to further help the animal situation here in Spain we network with several organisations. Since
2010 we have had a close relationship with Arca Noah España in Alhaurin el Grande, Malaga so that dogs can be relocated to the Netherlands and Belgium. Visit our website: www.animals-in-distress.eu

Community News e Lions Club President’s Charter and Summer Ball One of the main events of the Lion’s Club year, this year’s ball took place last Saturday. Last year’s president steps down and the President for the following year, this time Bryan Coventry, takes over. Speeches were kept fairly short and to the point but the outgoing president had enjoyed a wonderful if hardworking year. She told members how much had been donated by the La Cala branch of the Lion’s Clubs and where it had gone to. A whopping €46,608 had been raised in total and 24 charities had benefitted from the events and donations received during the year.
New President Bryan spoke about the people worse off than ourselves who benefitted from the donations and the goals for this coming year. Bill Gates of Microsoft fame has challenged the Lions Clubs worldwide to raise 10 million US dollars during 2012 /2013 and, if they raise it, he will add another 5 million dollars to the sum to give to the Lions Club’s effort to eradicate measles worldwide once and for all. The Gala Dinner at the Tamisa then took place with choices of starters (if you get the chance try the aubergine starter!), mains and puds including a delicious meringue topped with a fruits of the forest sorbet and dark, dark chocolate. The raffle followed with 12 prizes going to the lucky winners but, as one person who won a beautifully made wooden display cabinet with six bottles of wine was going back to the UK, he asked them to auction it and a generous

Another item to be auctioned was golf for two including a buggy that The News had donated and that raised €55 towards their charitable donations. Music was supplied by Chas Burnett with most gathered for evening getting up onto the dancefloor to work off some of the calories gained

Ga Ga was good! Designer funds
On Friday evening the Tamisa Golf Hotel pulled out all the stops for a great show by well-known local artiste Jordana. Starting with numbers by artists as diverse as Mary Wells and Adèle, the night really heated up when she started her Lady Ga Ga Tribute Show with Alejandro. Going through the Ga Ga songbook with amazing energy, Jordana and her “boys” – two fantastic Russian male dancers, the one on the right of the stage the women could not take their eyes off; fantastic dancer and a body to
well……. Anyway, back to the show! Jordana made a great tribute show including the rocky “Show us your teeth” that some of the audience had never heard before. All in all this was an all round excellent show. She’ll be back with her tribute to the lady at Tamisa Golf Hotel on Friday July 20th so this is definitely one for your diary and, having been there for this one, you’d be wise to get in quick for your tickets as we suspect a lot of the people that were there on Friday will be re-booking for the next show.
University College Marbella Design Academy celebrated their Summer 2012 Graduation & Fashion Show Ceremony recently and all the proceeds were given to the cancer charity Cudeca. With the help and support of the students and local businesses the academy wanted to help contribute to the local community by raising funds for this worthy local charity. The event was an absolute success and tickets were sold out. The evening kicked-off with an exclusive and static showcase display of the latest Graphics and Interior Designs. It was followed by a Catwalk Fashion Show with top professional models, including Miss Malaga and accompanied by an audio visual depicting all the latest trends in Design as predicted by the local design talent.
Complimentary drinks were served and free prizes and vouchers were drawn in the raffle from the gifts donated by the local businesses. The graduating students were presented with their Diplomas on stage at the awards ceremony. The money raised will help support health professionals and palliative care to treat patients who are suffering from advanced or terminal cancer within the province of Malaga. The evening was the rounded up by the aftershow celebration party on the lovely terrace and pool gardens with top DJ Kul from Peng Records. Many of the local press, media and VIPs attended and it was a great evening not only supporting Cudeca but also the future emerging stars and talent of tomorrows design world.
Start with a good charity. Good charities will insist on asking you a lot of questions and probably doing a home visit. You may be happy to take on a potentially difficult kitten, in which case get as much information as you can from the charity. If you are an experienced cat owner, you will be able to give a kitten a good start, even if its early life was unfortunate. Can you afford vet’s fees if the kitten has, or is likely to have, diseases or parasites? If you want an easy cat, or a cat that likes cuddles, then you may need to ask the following questions before visiting: 1. Are your mother cat and kittens kept in a house or in a pen? Kittens brought up in cat pens will find it slightly more difficult to adapt to home life. If you want a cuddle cat, find a kitten that was fostered in a house. 2. How do you socialise your kittens? Avoid the fosterer/charity who doesn’t know what this means or gives a vague answer.
3. Can I come and visit before the kittens are ready? Check it out before committing yourself. 4. Are your kittens vaccinated? Many reputable charities vaccinate their kittens before homing them. 5. Are the kittens hand reared? Sometimes hand reared kittens have difficulty getting on with other cats. Probably not the ideal choice if you already have an adult cat, but hand reared cats make lovely single pets. 6. Did the kittens start life as feral? At what age did they come into care? How tame are they? Feral kittens, that have a poor start in life, may grow up into slightly nervous cats. Are you OK if this happens?

Anthony Locke passed away recently after a battle with cancer. His funeral was held at the International Crematorium in Benalmadena on 13th June and a collection of €120 was made and presented to Cudeca for their ongoing care of patients with terminal illnesses. And when Eddie and Ann Naughton celebrated their Ruby Anniversary recently they decided to hold a party at their finca outside Coin. But instead of bringing presents for the happy couple guests were asked to make donations to Cudeca and a grand total of €760 euros was collected for the charity. The weather was spectacular and there was a large hog roast for everyone to enjoy – the machine was kindly brought over at no charge by Jeff Shoemark the Alhaurin tree surgeon.

Marlene’s natural girlies Elisabet´s Marlene is delighted with the new ring dug out by one The News’ readers which will make for a safer and easier training environment for her “boys” and “girlies”. She is a longtime follower of natural horsemanship (or should this be donkeymanship?) methods and was delighted to meet fellow enthusiasts last week when Janet Hakeney, President of the Natural Horsemanship Association of Portugal and Dawn Mason, co-founder of The Natural Horsemanship Association of Coin paid a visit to the breeding sanctuary. Marlene's dream is to breed a silver mule (like those once used by the military)and she has bought a beautiful pure bred Spanish filly who is destined to be the mother – the father will be one of her

If a loved one died in Spain, would you know what to do? Ask yourself these questions: Who would you call? Do you know the Spanish system? Would you be able to deal with the Spanish Law and Customs? Would family members have time to attend the funeral, which is usually held within 48 hours? Upfront payment is usually required in the region of €4000, would this amount be readily available? m2, the largest climate controlled space dedicated to butterflies in Europe. The building itself was built in the Thai style which added difficulty to the inherent complexity of the project. To give the building authenticity many of the materials and decorative elements were brought directly from Thailand. For example, the blue tiles covering the pagoda entrance hall – the original tile that is traditionally used in the temples of Thailand – were made in that colour, expressly in Chiang Mai for the butterfly park. As a butterfly’s lifespan is only 2-3 weeks you will be able to find new species on each visit. They exhibit more than 150 different species throughout the whole year. Many of the species reproduce in the park itself, so besides butterflies you can observe all the stages of their fascinating biological cycle as eggs and caterpillars, as well as other behaviour such as their courtship flights and

Are you ready to be blown away again? Well from Friday July 6th to Sunday the 8th July is the superb Mijas Blues Festival. Born of a fruitful liaison between Kevin Hillier of the “Ain't Nothing But Blues Club in London and the forward thinking Mijas Town Hall Foreign Residents Department (FRD), the classy threeday event has grown and grown in enthusiasm and popularity. This year's headline act is Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, a real live-wire, all action and famous Zydeco blues band from Louisiana U.S.A. Dwayne (pictured above right) and the boys
will be playing on both Saturday and Sunday night. They may well be considered by some to be the icing on this year’s cake but the cake is just as talented. Back again from the UK are Maggie Ross and her band and also Chicago style blues specialists West Weston's Bluesonics, as are Anomia Blues Band and Lito Blues Band from Målaga – all are tried and tested Mijas Blues Festival veterans. New comers this year, Billy Preacher and Friends from Målaga (via Belgium) Los Andabluses from Sevilla and Moochers Trio also from Målaga. This is a free concert, and for all Blues fans the atmosphere is just awesome.
The whole festival will be in the main plaza in front of Mijas town hall starting at 8.00 pm on Friday evening around the bandstand. Then on Saturday, from 8.00 pm until a respectable 3.00 am in the morning, it changes to the other side of the plaza with a bigger stage surrounded by plenty of big black loudspeakers, a couple of friendly drinks bars and snack stalls. (Look out for the Soroptimist's charity stand reportedly offering very tasty New Orleans style specialities). Then again more Blues on Sunday evening from 8.00 pm until 12.00 midnight. There is extra parking and

e Amazing Spider Man Director: Mark Webb Starring: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary In 2002 Sam Raimi created the first of his soon to be "Spider-Man" trilogy with "Spider-Man". Apart from "X-Men” there hadn't really been a large superhero film since the classic "Superman" films from the late '70s, early '80s. 2004 came and Raimi built upon the solid foundations of his initial creation with a near perfect, smart film made for all audiences, even those who had no love for superhero films known as "Spider-Man 2". Years later
he would go on to make "Spider-Man 3", a heavily flawed but still somewhat enjoyable experience. Now 5 years on from the last incarnation of the web slinger we are presented with director Marc Webb's perception of the masked crusader in "The Amazing Spider-Man". Marc Webb has taken up this huge task of re-booting the series and has managed to craft a solid piece of summer
entertainment, but not without it's flaws. However on the positive side he creates a brilliantly paced blockbuster with the first hour building on the characters and the second hour bringing high-octane action in a constant rhythm without becoming stale. He also manages to capture the character of Spider-Man fantastically bringing the humorous one-liners that he quips from the comic books and adds it to his film without
or years I have been an leads Luke and Fwhattrying to figure out Wrobots to some very is so fantastic about strange bar, with even ever over doing it. Along side his great action, pacing and realization of Spider-Man it's backed with a thumping score which breaks into moments of greatness as it reaches different tones, a heavy standout being the horror track that backs a lot of The Lizard scenes. Along with some great direction from Webb showing one or two scenes of true horror making him an interesting choice for a film in that genre.

DVD NEW RELEASE
Cleanskin
Paul Simon -Under African Skies Release date: June, 2012
Release date: June 2012 A film that’s utterly anchored by a terrific central performance from Sean Bean, Cleanskin is a gritty British thriller, dealing with a sensitive subject. Bean’s character is a secret service agent, one who is tracking down a terrorist cell in the UK. His mission: to terminate with extreme prejudice. But the film also devotes a good chunk of time to one of the terrorists, too. That focus is trained on Ash, played by Abhin Galeya, who finds himself persuaded into terrorism, and inevitably on a collision path with Bean. Cleanskin then builds things up on different sides of the law, before its inevitable climax.
Also starring Charlotte Rampling and James Fox as his operators and Abhin Galeya as Ash, the eponymous 'cleanskin', an extremist unknown to the security services and every agent’s worst nightmare.
It’s been 25 years since Paul Simon’s infectious “Graceland” introduced South African music to the world. For this involving documentary, Joel Berlinger (“Paradise Lost”) follows Paul Simon back to South Africa for a reunion with the musicians who played on the record. Paul Simon has said that Graceland is his favourite album, and that from a man who has had some really great records, says everything about the passion you will see in this DVD. There are wonderful stories about the creation of the album as well as a detailed look at the controversy Simon caused by breaking the U.N.’s cultural ban. The doc is
“Star Wars”? Considering the fact that it came out in the ‘70s, perhaps everyone was hyped up on LSD so no one realised how bad it actually was. Don´t even get me started on the “new episodes”.
W
here do I begin? You´ve got Mark Hamill playing Luke Skywalker moping round some desert planet complaining that he´s got no friends – which is no surprise, I wouldn´t be friends with him. Then Luke gets some new robot friends (and he´s still complaining), C-3PO and R2-D2. C-3PO really gets on my nerves, with that irritating “I know more than you” attitude and he´s so fussy. Little R2-D2 doesn´t seem too bad, he shows Luke the little video with Leia and that´s when the journey begins. ow, before we go any N further, what in the world is going on with hair? Princess Leia´s Honestly! Does George Lucas really think that hairdos of the future are going to consist of two Danish pastries stuck at the sides of women´s heads? Like that is a really attractive look, if you want to pull the Pillsbury dough boy!
also available in a lavish 2 CD/2 DVD set which collects the original album, an 80-page book and a delightful 1987 concert film showcasing the “Graceland” players in all their glory. Extras: music videos and a “Saturday Night Live” performance.
lec Guinness as ObiA Wan has only one decent line, and for the rest of the movie he pretends to be Gandalf. I don´t know who came up with his name, when I first saw him I was expecting someone from Asia. Harrison Ford as Han is basically Indiana Jones just without the hat and the whip, he is really arrogant and smug.
stranger music, where we meet Han Solo and Chewbacca. Han and Chewy agree to help Gandalf, whinging Walker and the robots find Leia. f course, they find the O Princess who is rather snotty with her rescuers and then there is a weird scene when the ship gets eaten up by an earthworm, a bit like Jonah and the whale. uring the trilogy things D get even more ridiculous, Yoda makes an appearance, the little fat elf like creature that sounds like a mature Kermit the frog. He seems to be quite moody and just keeps rattling on about this “force” stuff. et´s not forget the man LDarth, of the hour, good ol´ I only think he´s cool because he has his own theme music. Can you imagine going out with him for a drink? He sounds constantly depressed, sighing between every word. Poor guy! he fact is the “Star Wars” Ttwoddle trilogy is biggest load of ever to be put on the silver screen. The dialogue is lame –“They will be back, and in greater numbers” – the costumes are laughable, the story is ridiculous and the acting is appalling. The special effects were ok, I suppose for the time. f I am wrong about this, Itakethen why did Mark Hamill “Star Wars” off his resume? exactly!

Cherries are everywhere at the moment, and this classic French dessert suspends perfectly ripe cherries in a rich batter, baked in a luxuriously buttered dish. It’s pure seasonal indulgence.
Cherry clafoutis Ingredients:
(Serves 8)
• • • • • • • •
4 eggs 160 g plain flour 160 g butter, melted and cooled 300 ml milk 120 g caster sugar 2 vanilla pods, split lengthways 60 g butter 400 g perfectly ripe cherries, stoned and with stalk removed • Generous pinch of granulated sugar
Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas 6. 2. Lightly beat the eggs in a bowl with a fork, then lightly beat in the flour. Whisk in the cooled melted butter, then gradually whisk in the milk followed by the sugar. With the point of a knife, scrape out the seeds from the vanilla pods and add them to the mixture. 3. Cut 20g of the butter into small pieces, set aside. Use the remaining 40g to generously grease an ovenproof dish, about 22cm in diameter and 3-4cm deep. Spread the cherries evenly over the base of the dish, then
pour the batter mixture over them. 4. Carefully transfer the dish to the oven and bake for 10 minutes. Lower the oven setting to 180°C/gas 4, and cook for a further 15 minutes. Scatter the reserved butter pieces evenly over the top of the clafoutis and bake for another 5 minutes, or until set. To check, carefully insert the point of a sharp knife in the middle, if it comes out clean, the clafoutis is cooked. 5. Sprinkle with granulated sugar and leave to stand for 5 minutes. Serve the clafoutis warm, from the baking dish.

As you progress further along the path you wish to go down and start to be successful there is always someone who will challenge you. On a positive note, this helps clarify whether it is worth the effort to defend your actions and carry on - or whether to give up and change direction. It all depends on how much you want it. Everything happens for a reason and some new information is likely to be revealed putting you in a position of power.
When you give to others what they want and need from you instead of what you want to give them, the talents and abilities you never knew you had, or had forgotten you had, will rise to the fore. The insights you have are spot-on and need to be shared with others in a major way. You are emotionally being strengthened from the inside out, with your heart and mind co-operating in sync. Remain flexible and adaptable to whatever crosses your path.

Skin cancer cases New test to spot Parkinson's keep on rising Mathematician Max Little has developed a noninvasive, cheap test for the early detection of Parkinson's, a devastating disease for which currently there is no cure. Diagnosis is slow as there are no blood tests to detect it. However, Mr Little has discovered that Parkinson's symptoms can be detected by computer algorithms that analyse voice recordings. Despite numerous information campaigns, the number of skin cancer cases in Spain has quadrupled in the past 10 years, although only 6,000 were melanomas, which is the most aggressive variety.
the sun is the main cause. But anyone with a family history of melanoma, or who has more than 50 moles, or suffered serious burns in childhood or works outdoors in the sun should take extra precautions, he added.
The good news is that the number of deaths from skin cancer is dropping, according to dermatologist Enrique Herrera at the Xanit International Hospital in Fuengirola. Women over the age of 50 are high-risk candidates for melanoma, he said, and
The first 15 to 20 years in a person’s life are fundamental, Herrera said, because “skin has a memory”. He advised people with moles to watch for changes in their symmetry, edges, colour, and size, if the mole is more than six millimetres across.
If they observe any changes they should see their doctor because, if detected in time, the cure rate is almost 100 per cent. He said people with fair skins should use a 50 protection sun cream and recommended 25 to 30 sun creams for everyone else. Sun creams should be applied liberally every three hours and people should avoid the sun from 12 noon to 4 pm. Herrera also advised people to avoid tanning cabins like the plague.
In a blind test of voices, the system was able to spot those with Parkinson's with an accuracy of 86%. He is using TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) and at their global conference being held in Edinburgh from June 25th to 29th is calling for volunteers to contribute to a huge voice database. Mr Little was recently made a TED Fellow. The non-profit organisation behind the TED conference creates 40 such fellowships each year. The programme aims to target

innovators under the age of 40 and offers them free entry to conferences and other events. Mr Little became interested in understanding voice from a mathematical perspective while he was studying for a PhD at Oxford University in 2003. "I was looking for a practical application and I found it in analysing voice disorders, for example when someone's voice has broken down from overuse or after surgery on vocal chords," he said during a recent interview. "It didn't occur to me at the time that people with Parkinson's and other movement disorders could also be detected by the system." But a chance meeting with Andy Grove, one of Intel's founders and ex-chief executive, changed
Max Little
that. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2000 and has since pledged millions of his personal fortune to fund research into the disease. Mr Little said he hoped his technology will be available to doctors within the next two years: "If you can catch the disease early it will make a huge difference to care costs. It could become a key technology in reducing the burden on the NHS."

They examined data from 30,000 women and found that the average waist measurement is 33.43in, compared with the healthy size of 31.49in. The researchers found that women in the north of England have larger waists than women in the south. The researchers also said 52.5% of the women have a body mass index (BMI)
higher than the healthy range, while 16.2% were moderately or morbidly obese.
Hair Salon (All hair treatments) Beauty Treatments
The BMI is calculated by taking your weight in kilograms and dividing it by your height in metres squared. A BMI level measured between 25 and 29.9 means a person is regarded as overweight. If your BMI is over 30 then you are clinically obese. A spokesman for Nuffield Health said: "While waist size may seem like a cosmetic issue, this isn't about women fitting into their skinny jeans.

ONCE AGAIN A FESTIVAL IS A WASH OUT
Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip
Even the wellies weren’t up to it … and this time it ended in a sea of mud at the Isle of Wight annual mud wrestling concert Open-air festivals in the UK are known for their fashion of wellies and pack-a-macs but the Isle of Wight Festival held last weekend was beyond the bounds of reason. Even before the event started there were people giving up and going home as the torrential rain had created a sea of mud in the fields where tents had been pitched. Many people were stranded in their cars overnight as the site was impossible to get into and many were complaining of a lack of information, food and loos. Revellers’ cars had to be towed out of the field by tractor and queues for
Beautiful or Mugly
Mugly, the Chinese Crested has won the 24th World’s Ugliest Dog competition in California. He was taken there to enter by owner Bev Nicholson from Peterborough. She said of her pet: “When I first saw him I knew he had a very ugly mug so I just put the two words together and that’s why he has his name.” Poor dog, true, he’s not the most beautiful to look at but I’d be asking for a new owner after that!
those desperate to get out clashed with those who, despite all the rain, still wanted to get in. Tweets were going around by the hundreds with many saying just don’t even bother to turn up – and this from hardened festival-goers! The Wightlink ferries had to be kept away from the island and wait for traffic to clear before they could get their 600 passengers off and many were advised to leave their cars in Portsmouth and go across as foot passengers. An emergency plan had to be implemented to get people off the island and, once in place, the exit
from Newport on the island onto the ferries to take them back to the mainland went smoothly with the help of extra police being called on duty and 100 four-wheeldrive vehicles being drafted in to help, according to Stuart Love from the Isle of Wight council. Headline acts were Elbow, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Pearl Jam, and Bruce Springsteen. Elbow’s graceful indie anthems seem tailor made for festival sets at dusk, and so it proved here on Friday night. Backed by several string players, the Lancastrian quintet focussed on
The date had been pushed back this year as there is no Glastonbury festival to contend with.

No voice at all Soft or Weller A UK tour of BBC’s “The Voice” show has been cancelled due to poor ticket sales according to a spokesperson for the publicly owned company. A bit like Marmite, the show seemed to be one you either loved or hated while it was on. The show started off strong but dwindled as it went along. Its winner, Leanne Mitchell only reached number 45 in the singles charts with her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “Run To You”. On the other side of the fence, well ITV actually, the winners of Simon Cowell’s X Factor regularly make number 1 in the charts and its tours are sell-outs. The Voice tour was due to start in Bournemouth on September 12th then travel
on to venues such as London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester, Birmingham and Sheffield. The spokesperson for the BBC advised customers that had purchased tickets to contact the seller for a refund. The Voice has enjoyed great success in the United States but fizzled out in the UK after the BBC spent some £22 million on it. BBC One controller Danny Cohen has said producers would look at ways to improve the second series in 2013. He also said that, despite the ratings decline, the programme overall was a success and broke records for a new entertainment show on the BBC.
Small and slim in future Gypsies have said they feel “stygmatised” by recent TV coverage of their lifestyles including the programme “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding”. Now, with the aid of
material from their 2008 Mercury Prize-winning fourth album The Seldom Seen Kid, and last year's follow-up Build a Rocket Boys. Songs like The Bones of You were delivered with stately beauty. There's nothing flashy about 38-year-old Garvey, but he was a master at working the crowd. Before 'Grounds for Divorce', he launched into a cappella verse with altered words: "traffic in cars holding me back / Here we are, getting p****d". The band finished with One Day Like This.
Suffolk’s Ormiston Children and Families Trust, Cambridgeshire travellers have taken part in a photography project which they hope will address the issue when
they go on show at Michaelhouse in Cambridge from yesterday until July 7th. The students wanted to challenge negative images given by the Channel 4 programme.
Organisers of the 7th World Egg Throwing Championships say they hope to raise up to £10,000 for charity. The event at Swaton, Lincolnshire had teams from as far as South Africa and Germany taking part. Chosen charities include Leukaemia research, the local air ambulance, and emergency response organization LIVES. The participants, known as Tossers took part in competitions such as egg relays and egg Russian Roulette in addition to the headline distancethrowing challenge.
A concert due to take place in Cheshire with Paul Weller being among the headliners had to be cancelled due to bad weather. However, Elbow performed at the open-air venue on Saturday night as part of the Live From Jodrell bank concert. Event director Jon Drape said that the venue was “unfit to accommodate crowds” and that they were unable to deliver the concert safely. He added that all ticket holders would get a full refund.
Bad weather at the Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend caused rapper Plan B to slip several times during his set. The skies opened and the rain fell. Some hours later Plan B said that he had been in a bad mood over the slippery stage but said that”he was getting over it now”. Should’ve stayed in the pub!

Lisa Emeny Animal Shelter Crisis P.A.D. (Proteccion de Animales Domesticos), based in the Fuengirola/Mijas area, is facing a crisis situation as the number of animals in their care has risen to unacceptably high levels. Our situation is desperate and we have no choice but to close our doors to new arrivals. We simply are at bursting point and we do not have the financial resources to take in any new animals. We are struggling to look after the animals already in our care and it would be irresponsible to increase that burden further. Our priority has to be for the dogs and cats that we have already in our shelter. The summer months are always extremely difficult for

Carole Marsh I am writing to complain about the inaccuracy of a recent article printed in The News, advertising the upcoming cherry festival in Alfarnate. The article said that this would be taking place today (21st June 2012). After the hour and a half journey from where we live in Marbella, we arrived at the village, only to be told that it is not actually on until 23rd June. This has greatly annoyed both myself and my
President, P.A.D. animal shelter us each year but currently things are worse than ever. Our staff and volunteers are faced with upsetting, and sometimes abusive, situations every single day from animal owners wanting to leave their cats or dogs with us. We don’t want to turn any animal away but we simply have no choice at the moment. Our income, which is made up entirely of voluntary donations, has dropped dramatically, and the demand on our services increased substantially. People have to understand the gravity of the situation : We desperately need help – either from people who can adopt a cat or a dog or help financially. We also need people who can come to the shelter and help

There were numerous others who had attended the event on account of your article, all of whom were most disgruntled. Name supplied I had to let you know about this. I am so angry! When I bought an iphone4 last year from the Phonehouse I was persuaded to take out an insurance to replace the phone if it was lost or stolen. It cost 40 euros every quarter but as it was an expensive phone I took the insurance. On Sunday afternoon the phone was stolen from my handbag on the Paseo in Fuengirola. I went to the Phonehouse with my insurance policy and the police report. Apparently I am not covered as the robbery

Legion who had hired a coach to take everyone to the festival. Unfortunately, the local town hall decided to change the day after we had gone to press so we couldn’t let anybody know, and the RBL had to cancel their coach and meet people at the venue to tell them the trip was off. It’s just poor form entirely when the town halls do this sort of thing – and they do it often in the rural areas – perhaps they should think of all the people they disappoint by doing this but somehow I doubt it will make any difference.
Fuengirola was without violence! Sorry I wasn't beaten up! Pick pocketing as they call it is not covered which is the most common type of robbery in this area. So I am once again reminded of the old saying " let the buyer beware". Don't listen to the sales person, check the very, very small print. Editor says: This has happened to me too and the lady is quite correct, unless you are physically injured in some way, they won’t pay out, so check your cover, you may be able to purchase an addon.
Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System and the one closest to the Sun. This coming week will be the best chance to spot this most elusive of planets.
M
ercury is a tiny world, not much bigger than our moon and even smaller than Jupiter’s moon Ganymede and Saturn’s moon Titan. And because it is so close to the Sun – on average 36 million miles away – it is usually very hard to spot. It can only be seen when it’s at its most extreme to the left of the Sun (western elongation) and appears in the west after sunset, or to the right of the Sun (eastern elongation) when it appears in the east before sunrise.
T
his week Mercury reaches its greatest western elongation on Sunday evening 1st July and so should be visible for over an hour in the west after sunset. If you have a clear view of the western horizon it will be quite easy to spot in the twilight sky looking like a pink coloured star. It’s really quite bright but because it is always very close to the setting Sun it is usually washed out by the evening sky. Try sweeping around the sky due west and close to the horizon using binoculars but only after the Sun has set and you will find it quite easily.
D
uring a total eclipse of the Sun when the Moon blocks out the Sun’s light Mercury and Venus can often be seen in the darkened sky close to the Sun. On rare occasions Mercury will pass directly across the face of the Sun during a transit. The next Transit of Mercury will occur on May 9th 2016 and will be visible to most of Europe. The massive difference in size between the Sun and Mercury is astonishing as tiny Mercury speeds across the Sun.
it Mercury, the messenger of the Gods. It completes one orbit around the Sun every 88 days travelling at over 30 miles per second but because it spins so slowly about its axis then a day on Mercury can last for the equivalent of 58 Earth days. As you can imagine, being so close to the Sun it is very hot on the surface – during the day time temperatures can reach 450ºC but at night it can plummet as low as –170ºC. These extreme temperatures and also Mercury’s low gravity mean that there is practically no atmosphere for the planet and so the possibility of any life being found there is nil.
M
ercury’s close proximity to the Sun also makes it an open target for any Solar System debris such as comets, meteors and asteroids that find themselves being drawn by the Sun’s massive gravity and so the surface of Mercury is pock-marked with millions of years worth of impact craters very similar to the surface of the Moon.
V
n Sunday it will be to the extreme left of the Sun and only the right half of the planet will be illuminated by the Sun, it’s a bit like looking at the half Moon. Then over the next few weeks Mercury will begin to rapidly move closer toward the Sun until it passes between us and the Sun less than a month later on July 28th. It then reappears to the right of the Sun in the middle of August.
irtually everything that scientists knew about Mercury had come from a NASA spacecraft called Mariner 10 that flew past Mercury in 1974 and 1975 and photographed almost all of the surface. But in March 2011 a new spacecraft called Messenger went into orbit around Mercury and began sending back extremely detailed images of the surface. It was discovered that Mercury had survived an almost catastrophic collision from an asteroid that has caused a huge crater almost 1000 miles wide called the Caloris basin to scar the landscape. The outer ridge of the Caloris basin is a ring almost 2 miles high with evidence of the molten insides of the planet pouring out onto the surface and running like rivers away from the impact site.

Storming drive by Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso The Spaniard thrilled home fans by winning an incident-packed European Grand Prix in Valencia on Sunday to take the overall championship lead and become Formula One's first repeat winner of the season. Hamilton crashed out in the closing laps. It was still a momentous achievement on a twisty street circuit that had seen three of the past four winners start on pole and nobody win from lower than third place. "It's maybe the best victory I have had in terms of emotions," Alonso told a news conference after sharing the emotion with fans and being mobbed by in the photographers Mediterranean sunshine.
"Here now, with the European championship of football on, and all the fans, I am feeling very proud to be Spanish at the moment," said Alonso, who had wiped away tears of joy as he stood for the anthems.
Hamilton furious Hamilton was fighting to defend third place when he was knocked off the track by Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado's Williams, with two laps remaining. The 2008 champion pounded the steering wheel with his fists in fury, before tossing it out of the cockpit. The Venezuelan was later given a 20-second penalty, which drops him from 10th to 12th place and out of the points. The race stewards decided he had "failed to rejoin the track in a safe manner".
All new Seat Toledo The Seat Toledo is back, and the Spaniards have decided to ditch the weird mini-van with a boot look that the third generation had.... ...going back to a traditional sedan with the fourth generation, except instead of a normal sedan boot, you get a wide opening hatchback – proving that a five-door, compact hatchback can be exceptionally emotional, sporty and elegant. The designers have injected an extra portion of refinement into the roofline; it runs in an elegant arc to the broad Cpillar, which rises smoothly from the rear side portion. The low lying rear windscreen gives the new SEAT the air of a coupé, without impacting in any way its versatility and functionality. As a completely new model, the Toledo makes use of the very latest Volkswagen Group engines. At the pinnacle are highly efficient TSI petrol engines in 1.2 and 1.4 displacements, and a 1.6 common-rail TDI unit. A seven-speed dual-shift
Seven times world champion Schumacher made his way through the debris to grab third in his Mercedes, his first podium finish since he was at Ferrari in 2006 and first of a comeback that started in 2010. Now 43, he was the oldest driver to stand on the Formula One podium since Australian Jack Brabham finished second at Brands Hatch in Britain at the age of 44 in 1970. At the moment it's not clear what exactly was the problem," he said after returning to the pits. Grosjean had been competing for the top spot, and the chance of becoming the eighth different winner in eight races, when the Frenchman also had to retire with an alternator problem when placed second on lap 41 of the 57 lap race.

First Tour win for Danny Max Clifford Celebrity Golf England's Danny Willett took his first victory on the European Tour by winning the International Open in Cologne after a play-off with Australian Marcus Fraser. The 24-year-old led by three early in the final round but eventually had to rely on the Australian bogeying the last to finish tied on 11 under. The duo played the 18th hole four more times before Willett claimed victory. Fraser, twice a winner on the European Tour, looked favourite to land the first prize of nearly £270,000 when he was 30 feet away in two and the Yorkshireman went over the green. But Willett chipped close, while Fraser saw his putt lip out and then missed a four-footer coming back to give the Englishman victory. "I've had some ups and downs in the last 18 months and I want to thank everybody for their support," he said. The world number 204 now goes to Sunningdale to try to qualify for the Open Championship.
US PGA TOUR There was also another first win on the US PGA Tour at the weekend. Australian Marc Leishman shot an 8-under 62 on Sunday in the

Travelers Championship, then went back to the clubhouse to eat, watch some football and wait to see where his 14 under par would leave him on the leaderboard. More than two hours later, after Charley Hoffman lost a two-stroke lead on the final two holes, Leishman was hoisting his first championship trophy on the PGA Tour Roland Thatcher, who was tied for the lead after three rounds, began his day with three bogeys on the first six holes. He seemed like an afterthought, until Hoffman's collapse. But he made an eagle on the par-5 13th after hitting his second shot within 15 feet of the pin.
He came up 18 with a chance to force a playoff, but put his second shot into a greenside bunker and bogeyed the hole. He and fellow co-leader England’s Brian Davis both shot 70, putting them in a group at 12 under with Tim Clark and John Rollins, to finish tied fourth.
Police have launched an investigation into allegations of online racist abuse during England's Euro 2012 quarter-final defeat on Sunday. It is alleged black players Ashley Cole and Ashley Young were singled out by a Twitter user after they missed penalties against Italy. The Football Association has called the attacks
"appalling and unacceptable". Police said they were examining possible offences under the Public Order Act.
Brian Davis relaxes
In one post the tweeter wrote: "All I got to say is this was just a joke, you guys need to relax, police know i was kiddin around and they won't bother me hopefully, cheers."

Alistair Brownlee wins comeback race Alistair Brownlee is firmly back in Olympic triathlon title contention after comfortably winning his World Series return in Kitzbuehel. Brownlee, 24, suffered an Achilles tendon tear in February and missed the first three races of the season. But he beat younger brother Jonny to gold in the Austrian Alpine sun without ever looking troubled by his injury. Kitzbuehel is expected to be the Brownlee brothers' last event before the Olympic race in Hyde Park.

Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams says she has no thoughts of retiring, despite her shock Wimbledon first-round defeat by Elena Vesnina. The 32-year-old American, who suffers from Sjogren's Syndrome, was beaten 6-1 6-3 by the Russian world number 79. "There's no way I'm going to sit down and give up," said Williams. "I don't have time to feel sorry for myself, it doesn't feel good. I'm going to use the time to feel positive. I love this
sport." Williams held serve only once as she was blown away in the first set. She recovered in the second, but when Vesnina broke in the sixth game she closed out victory to hand Williams only her second first-round defeat at the All England Club. The other time that the seven-time Grand Slam champion fell at the first hurdle was in her debut year at SW19, in 1997, also the only other occasion when she was unseeded.

defeat by Italy. England were outplayed for most of a quarter-final that finished goalless after 120 minutes, before Italy won 4-2 on spot-kicks. Captain Steven Gerrard says he and his team-mates are "heartbroken" by their exit from Euro 2012 following the penalty shoot-out loss. It was the sixth time England had been beaten on spot-kicks in a major tournament after battling to a goalless draw in the quarter-final in Kiev. Andrea Pirlo's chipped spot-kick was the crowning glory during a sparkling performance as Italy secured a semi-final tie against Germany. Although the margin of victory was narrow, in the 120 minutes beforehand England were given a lesson in the value of possession by the 33-yearold Juventus midfielder. Pirlo was by far the game's leading passer with 131 passes. England's highest passer was Ashley Cole with 44. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque admits his "drained" side face a disadvantage in their Euro 2012 semi-final with Portugal on Wednesday. Xabi Alonso's double earned Spain a comfortable 2-0 win over France on Saturday to set up a last-four meeting with their neighbours in Donetsk. Portugal booked their place by beating Czech Republic 1-0 two days earlier. Del Bosque said: "We
Gary Neville and Roy Hodgson console the two players
have two fewer days to rest than them. It is a small handicap."
Samir Nasri Row France manager Laurent Blanc said Samir Nasri's row with a French journalist was bad for the image of both the midfielder and the national team. Nasri lashed out at the media after France meekly lost 2-0 to Spain in their Euro 2012 quarter-final. "It is very regrettable but it's a problem between Samir and the press," Blanc told French television. "It is very, very bad for his image but when this is done when he's with France it's also bad for the team's image." He added: "From what I gathered, he lacked respect towards the journalist who at some point also lacked respect towards him." Nasri's reaction of putting his finger to his lips in France's 1-1 draw with England in their first group game against England was also believed to have been
aimed at the French media. Blanc said: "I had told him what I thought about this (after the first incident) but apparently he did not get the message." Nasri was once referred to as a ‘rat in the dressing room’ by his former Arsenal team-mate William Gallas, and is the player identified – anonymously of course – by members of the current squad as the leading source of friction in the French camp.
