Priceless medieval manuscript recovered The Codex Calixtinus stolen last year in Santiago de Compostela is found in a garage NATIONAL NEWS - MONEY AVAILABLE BY END OF JULY

Timid response to €30 billion for banks The Madrid stock market rose less than 1 percentage point on Tuesday after it was announced late on Monday that the Eurozone finance ministers had agreed to offer Spain €30bn to help its troubled banks. The risk premium dropped three points to 556.50. On Monday, the yield on Spanish 10-year bonds – which are taken as a strong indicator of the interest rate the government would have to pay to borrow money – rose above 7%, while Italian bond yields rose to 6.1%. Yields above 7% are considered to be

unsustainable in the long term. After nine hours of emergency talks in Brussels, the ministers said the money would be available by the end of July. It was also agreed that a 2013 deadline for Spain to cut its budget deficit to the EU limit of 3% could be extended by one year. Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker said after the meeting: "We are aiming at reaching a formal agreement in the second half of July, taking into account national

parliamentary procedures, allowing for a first disbursement of €30 bn by the end of the month to be mobilised as a contingency in case of urgent needs in the Spanish banking sector." CONTINuED ON PAgE 2

I will be taking a short trip to the UK soon and I am not good with airline’s hidden charges. Yes, I have watched several times Fascinating Aida’s song about flights for 50p on YouTube (if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s very funny and so accurate it’s untrue!) but I am a little shocked by the terms and conditions attached to the airline I am travelling with. I used to love flying Aer lingus from here to london but, sadly they no longer run the service, and service was the operative word with them - it was second to none. Easyjet I like because, although you have to pay for everything on top, at least they don’t hide it and you know what to expect. Also, their crews are usually friendly and fun, unlike “the world’s favourite airline” that seem to be a miserable bunch of so-and-so’s. Anyway, all that aside, I am going to be travelling with Monarch this time. They say that your hand baggage allowance is one piece weighing no more than 10kg and the size of the bag shouldn’t exceed certain dimensions which is fine. Then in very small print they say that your handbag must also fit inside said hand luggage so, basically, even for a weekend you have no choice other than to book in hold luggage or wear the same thing all weekend. To book hold luggage costs €19.99 and I could buy a whole new case for that price! Add to that the fact that I can’t book in online unless I pay for a seat – that is another €6.99 – and I feel that I’ve been royally ripped off by them. I shall just get there early and stand in line with everyone else!

One of the country’s most valuable cultural artefacts, the Codex Calixtinus, turned up in a garage last week, wrapped in old newspapers in a plastic bag nestling between other objects inside a box, just one year after it was stolen.

Villa in Urb. Cerros del Aguila with fantastic sea views. Lounge, dining room, open kitchen, 3-4 bedrooms incl. independent studio apartment. Large garden with private pool and BBQ area. Built 200 m2, plot 875 m2.

The garage belongs to 61year-old Jose Manuel Fernández Castiñeiras, who had worked at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela for 25 years in a self-employed capacity, and was sacked early last year after falsifying a labour document to pass himself off as a contracted worker. At the time of the theft, he was claiming €40,000 for unfair dismissal. Police suspected the theft was an inside job and, because the Codex was impossible to sell on the open market, feared that it had been stolen to order for a collector – which would have made it impossible to trace. They eliminated some 30 suspects before homing in on Fernández Castiñeiras who had had a stormy relationship with cathedral dean José María Díaz. Security cameras captured images of Fernández Castiñeiras leaving the cathedral on July 4th, 2011 – the day of the robbery – carrying a package under his arm. But it wasn’t enough to accuse him of any crime, said Serafín Castro, chief of the special crimes squad. Suspicions were raised further when Fernández Castiñeiras tried to buy a house worth €300,000. He had already purchased a

Castro said that in one of the conversations he had with the suspect, he said “Manolo, I hope the people who have the codex don’t decide to burn it.” Fernández Castiñeiras replied “No, it isn’t burnt.” “That is when he gave himself away,” Castro said. Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz said last Friday that although the police had long suspected the electrician, they didn’t want to arrest him immediately because they were interested in finding the Codex Calixtinus, the priceless ancient field guide to the Way of St. James written sometime in the mid-1100s, which made international headlines when it was stolen.

Timid response to €30 bn for banks

Last week’s police raids on houses, garages and storage units belonging to Fernández Castiñeiras indicate he had been pilfering from the cathedral over a long period of time. Police discovered nearly €2 million and some $600,000 in cash in the garage as well as other valuable manuscripts and papers. They arrested Fernández Castiñeiras , as well as his wife, Remedios Nieto Mayo, their son Jesus Fernández and his girlfriend, Maria Jesus Q. who was later released for lack of evidence against her. The other three were jailed without bail.

National News The Spanish branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF, formerly World Wildlife Fund) has called a special meeting on July 21st with just one item on the agenda: whether or not to remove King Juan Carlos from his position as founding and honorary president of the environmental organisation. The NGO was criticised for having the king as its figurehead after his elephant-hunting trip hit the headlines in April. WWF secretary general Juan Carlos del Olmo said the Royal Household had said it would pay “the utmost respect to the decision taken by the members”.

occupied the post of WWF honorary president since 1968, but has played a limited role in its operations. After the elephant hunting incident, WWF sent a letter to the Royal Household saying the king’s actions had “provoked enormous contempt among members

and in public opinion in general against the hunting of elephants, even when it is carried out in a legal and regulated way”. Elephants can still be hunted legally in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. The king killed the buffaloes in the photograph above on the same hunting trip.

Midnight march on Madrid The miners’ so-called “black march” reached the outskirts of Madrid on Monday after a march of some 430 kilometres in searing heat. The northern column, which set out from Asturias, Palencia and León over two weeks ago, reached the suburb of Aravaca on Monday afternoon, where hundreds of residents turned out to cheer them. They were greeted by applause and cheers of support from residents. The Aragon column, which started out from Zaragoza and Teruel, reached the satellite town of Alcobendas north of Madrid on Monday, where union labour representatives joined the miners for a rally in the main square. Both columns were scheduled to join up in the centre of Madrid just after midnight on Tuesday, dressed in full mining gear, with their helmet lights and

Two young Britons and an American were gored on Monday on the third day of the San Fermin bull-run in Pamplona – made famous by Ernest Hemingway in his 1926 book The Sun Also Rises. Nick Couchman, 20, from Orpington, Kent and Liam Tarff, 29, from Brixton, London, were both gored within seconds of each other when the 550kg bull called Fugado (Runaway) lowered his horns and charged into a group of runners cowering against the barricade towards the end of the 850metre run. A 38-year-old American from Philadelphia was also gored, making this the most dangerous San Fermin bull-run since a 27year-old Spaniard was killed in 2009. On that occasion the bull also turned on its tracks and gored Daniel Jimeno through the neck and lung. His father was in Pamplona this week on a mission to persuade the local authorities to raise a

World News Military 'warns' new president

Earlier on Monday, the Supreme Constitutional Court rejected the decree issued by Mr Mursi the day before to reconvene the Muslim Brotherhooddominated parliament.

The court said its June 14th ruling – that part of last year's parliamentary election was unconstitutional – was binding and final. But army units posted outside the parliament building had already left and some MPs had gone in for the first time since the assembly was dissolved. Despite the apparent tensions, President Mursi

Airline crew rewarded for foiling hijack

Egypt's military council has said the decision to dissolve the country's parliament must be upheld, after new President Mohammed Mursi ordered the assembly to reopen. The military closed parliament last month after a court ruling. Its latest intervention is seen by some as a challenge and warning to the president, sworn in barely a week ago.

The Hainan airlines Group has given nine crew members audi cars, cash and property for helping to foil a hijack attempt on an internal flight. The plane had just taken off when the incident occurred. officials have said six men tried to break into the cockpit using a broken aluminium crutch as a weapon, but were overpowered by passengers and crew. Two safety officers and the chief purser got cash and property worth 4m yuan (£406,200) each. The rest got assets worth 2.5m yuan each. and Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who heads Scaf, appeared together at a military cadet graduation ceremony on Monday (above). Mr Mursi won the country's first free presidential election last month, and army chiefs formally handed over power on June 30th.

The military had previously granted itself sweeping powers. The commanders' declaration stripped the president of any authority over the military, gave military chiefs legislative powers, and the veto over the new constitution, which has yet to be drafted.

The graves of 40 German soldiers who died during World War I were vandalised at a military cemetery in northern France on Sunday, the day President François Hollande met German Chancellor Angela Merkel to mark the 50th anniversary of the formal post-war reconciliation. The two leaders were attending the main ceremony in the city of

Reims, about 40km (25 miles) east of where the grave attack happened. Wooden crosses were pulled up from the SaintEtienne-à-Arnes cemetery and some were later used for a camp fire. President Hollande condemned the act, saying nothing would change French friendship with Germany. A spokesman at the local prefecture said it was not

immediately clear whether it was a "determined action" or the work of "irresponsible people". The spokesman added that there was no sign of any political message after the attack – just hours before Mr Hollande and Mrs Merkel met in Reims' imposing cathedral. Flood alert came 'too late' Russian officials failed to give adequate warnings before flash floods that killed at least 171 people in the southern Krasnodar region, Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov said on Monday, adding that mistakes were made by local leaders and various services. Local officials said flood warnings were given using sirens, sms messages and

loudspeakers, but many people were asleep at the time and did not hear them. President Vladimir Putin has demanded a full report by the weekend on the disaster and how it was handled. Record torrential rains, which dumped as much as 11 inches of water over Friday night, have been blamed for the floods. The town of Krymsk was

devastated and the district boss has been sacked. Seventeen people were still missing on Tuesday after Friday night's disaster. Russian media say 210 people are in hospital, including 48 children. Officials have denied allegations - widespread among locals - that the opening of reservoir sluice gates was to blame for the ferocity of the floods.

Mandatory death penalty to be changed Singapore is proposing changes to its mandatory death penalty for drug trafficking and murder in some cases. Under the proposed changes, the courts will have the discretion to either sentence the offender to death or life imprisonment with caning, instead of the mandatory death penalty, but only when ''two specific, tightlydefined conditions are met'', Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean

said on Monday. The two conditions are that the offender is only a courier and is not involved in the supply or distribution of drugs, and if the offender co-operates with authorities, or is mentally disabled. However, the mandatory death penalty will continue to apply in most cases, particularly for those who manufacture or traffic in drugs and those who fund, organise or abet drug trafficking, said Mr Teo,

who is also home affairs minister. In homicide cases, the mandatory death penalty will only apply in cases where there is an intention to kill, Law Minister K Shanmugam told parliament. Executions have been suspended since July 2011 as part of a year-long review. The legislation is expected to be introduced by the end of the year and death row convicts would be able to seek resentencing.

UK gets new world record

M&S sales bad for 2nd quarter

Carol Hawkins, 48, from Dublin was sentenced to seven years in jail by Judge Patrick McCartan after an 18 day trial at the Circuit Criminal Court on Friday. The former personal assistant was accused of embezzling £2.2 million from two of U2 bassist Adam Clayton’s bank accounts between 2004 and 2008 to fund her lavish lifestyle. At one time Hawkins team had told the court that she felt entitled to take the money because “she was not told to stop”. Clayton told the court that she had received his absolute trust and was “absolutely amazed” when it was discovered she had spent £ 434,000 on race horses and stabling. Hawkins was hired to run his house near Dublin and to cook and shop for him giving her access to his

Marks & Spencer’s summer sales have slumped according to figures released. They show a likefor- like drop in food sales of 2.8% while non-food item sales dropped by 6.8%. Kate Bostock, who was in charge of womenswear will be leaving the company by “mutual consent”, the company said. Belinda Earl, former head of Jaeger will take over as the new M&S style director from September 1st. The slump comes despite advertising with many celebrities including Gary Barlow. However, despite the downturn in figures, M&S boss, Dutchman Marc Bolland’s basic salary rose by 4% last year to £1.7 million and he could take home as much as £6 million including bonuses and long term incentives.

accounts for “legitimate purposes”. He was not in court to hear the sentencing but his lawyer, Colm O’Briain had told the jury that Hawkins "played on the good nature and trust" of the rock musician and "proceeded like a whirlwind down Fifth Avenue and Bond Street to the delight of retailers". The judge told the court that the taking of the money was rooted in greed and nothing else. As she was led away to start her prison term she nodded and smiled at the judge.

What is it? Why it’s the world’s tallest Lego tower measuring 32m and built using more than half a million bricks in the 160 sections of the structure that was built in just four days. Little Lego athlete figures have been placed on top of the tower in Legoland, Berkshire to mark this year’s London Olympic games. Visitors to the park rolled up their sleeves and joined builder Per K Knudsen in the construction. Legoland divisional director Sue Kemp said: “We are delighted to reclaim the record for Britain. We last held it in 2008 when it was a mere 29.26 metres tall. We’re very

grateful to the hundreds of people who helped create the tower, which is made from over 500,000 bricks. It took four days to build and is certainly an impressive feat." The first Lego tower was built in London in 1988, standing at just under 50 feet. Since then, the record has been broken more than 30 times.

The company said that unseasonal weather had affected sales with the strongest sales in the last few weeks including coats, jackets and tights. Shares have fallen by around 15% since March giving it a market cap – the total value of all shares – at around £5 billion. The company has more than 700 stores. However, the company are pleased with performances from their international stores which are continuing to make good progress.

Off-duty PC killed

Bank of England deputy governor Paul Tucker has told MPs that he "absolutely" refuted claims he attempted to influence Barclays into manipulating the Libor rate. Speaking before the Treasury Select Committee, Mr Tucker said that a record of a contentious phonecall he had with former Barclays boss Bob Diamond about lending

PC Ian Dibell, (pictured right) described by colleagues as a “brave, respected and experienced neighbourhood officer” was killed while attending an incident involving a dispute in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. The officer was offduty at the time.

rates gave the "wrong impression". The deputy governor found himself in the spotlight after Mr Diamond released the note, in which it has been suggested Mr Tucker was encouraging the bank to submit lower Libor submissions in light of concerns from senior Whitehall figures. Mr Tucker confirmed one of the Whitehall figures

was the then Downing Street chief of staff Sir Jeremy Heywood but denied he had attempted to influence Barclays into rigging rates. Barclays has been the focal point for a row over banking culture after the bank was fined £290 million by UK and US regulators for manipulating the Libor, which affects mortgages and loans.

Seven men arrested on terrorism charges Police found firearms in a car they had stopped on the M1 occupied by Jewel Uddin 26, Omar Mohammed Khan 27, and Mohammed Hasseen 23. The three men have been charged with terrorism offences and will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court in London. The trio, all from the Sparkhill area of Birmingham were stopped last Tuesday during routine stops to check car insurance and will remain

in custody along with four other men who have been detained over three days of operations including a 24year-old man from Moseley, a 22-year-old man from Birmingham, a 22year-old man from Alum Rock, Smethwick and a 43year-old man from the Kirklees area.

The alleged conduct between May 1st and July 4th this year includes the manufacture of improvised explosive devices, the acquisition of firearms and other weapons and the purchase of a motor vehicle connected with the charges under Section Five of the Terrorism Act 2006.

The car was impounded on suspicion of having no insurance but firearms, offensive weapons and other material were later found inside prompting police to trace and arrest its driver.

Police have until today to formally charge three of the men and until Thursday to charge the fourth or request further time for questioning them.

Essex police Chief Constable said that he had intervened in what he knew was an extremely deadly situation, challenging the gunman who was chasing a man along Redbridge Road where it is believed the officer lived. The gunman, named as Peter Reeve, 64, was described as white, about 5’10” with short greyish hair. Police launched the manhunt for Reeve after PC Dibell was shot at around 3.40pm on Monday with local officers deployed in the area to protect the public and armed response units deployed to search for the gunman who had been described as armed and extremely dangerous. However, a local man called police at 8.30am on Tuesday after he found Reeve’s body. Officers arrived at the churchyard in

Writtle near Chelmsford within minutes, and all the alleyways leading to the area were sealed off. A tarpaulin was then put in place to cover Reeve's body. Police later confirmed that he was found with wounds to the head and with a weapon. Reeve did not have a firearms licence and was “largely unknown” to police. No police shots were fired. The gunman’s vehicle was found at a nearby road junction. Another man, 48-year-old Trevor Marshall, was injured with a gunshot wound to his leg during the attack.

According to a report commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, a couple with two children in the UK must earn at least £36,800 to achieve an acceptable standard of living which has risen by almost a third since 2008. They say that the crippling costs of childcare, the rise in transport costs and tax credit cuts have dealt a damaging triple financial blow to families. Meanwhile a single person needs to earn £16,400 a year, a lone parent with one child £23,900 and a pension-aged couple need £231 (or £12,012) a week. The survey found that over a quarter of the UK population live below the standard which is 3 million more than in 2008.

The chief constable said that initial reports saying that he was a PCSO were incorrect.

Cadiz gateway for 50% of Land workers take over government land Moroccan hashish With an unemployment rate of 36%, the highest in Spain, more and people people in Cádiz province look to the drug traffickers for work.

With the orange harvest destroyed by late frosts and no other work available, a group of workers belonging to the Andalusian Workers' Syndicate (SAT) took over the 400-hectare Somontes farm in Palma de Río, in Córdoba province, which is owned by the Junta de Andalucia. Their slogan “La tierra para el que la trabaja” (The land for those who work it) is a call to arms dating back to the days before the Civil War. Their inspiration is the village of Marinaleda, in the neighbouring province of Seville, where the mayor of 33 years' standing, Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo, decided back in the late 1970s to occupy unused land and work it. More than three decades later, the community is one

of the few in the area with full employment. Gordillo backs the Somontes workers, as does the ombudsman of Andalusia, José Chamizo, who has visited Palma del Río in support of their initiative. They decided to occupy the land on March 4th, the day that it was due to be auctioned. It was the third time since June 2011 that the Junta de Andalucia had

tried to sell off the land, at a starting price of €1.5 million euros. There were no takers, and the SAT workers decided to occupy it, fearing it would be sold privately. The Somontes workers have taken their case to court, where they hope to demonstrate that they are putting the land to good use by irrigating it. Hopefully, the judge will agree with them.

Malaga looks to Tangiers Malaga Mayor Francisco de la Torre headed a delegation of local businessmen on Monday to Tangiers, invited there by City Hall to discuss cooperation on the construction of a new port on the Moroccan side of the strait. De la Torre told reporters that “we worry so much about recession at home that we tend to forget that Morocco has a growth rate of 4 per cent – higher than many EU countries”. He said the Moroccans were keen to use Spanish construction expertise to build the planned port. He also pointed out that the population of Tangiers is expected to triple over the next 15 years “so there’s a lot of work there”. De la Torre also said the Malaga delegation had discussed tourism projects, such as offering joint package holidays of five days in Malaga and five days in Tangiers. “The prospects are almost endless,” de la Torre said.

The Guardia Civil have said that percentage has grown steadily over the years – 23 per cent in 2007, 40 per cent in 2009, 46 per cent in 2010, and today it stands at more than 50 per cent. Of the 283 tons of hashish intercepted nationwide by the Guardia

Civil so far this year, 115 tons were seized in Cádiz. A Guardia spokesman said arrests are made daily – the province is the only one in Spain which has three antidrug prosecutors. A kilo of hashish pollen costs €1,500 in Cádiz, a quarter of what it costs elsewhere in Europe.

Andalucia’s ports thriving The crisis seems to have bypassed the region’s ports – the growth of the container trade at Algeciras was the highest in the world last year, second only to Shanghai. During the first five months of this year, the port handled 238.4 million tons of merchandise. During the same period, Malaga port handled 28.4

million tons of merchandise, an increase of nearly 20 per cent over the same period last year. Huelva port has taken advantage of its proximity to the Cepsa refinery which, together with the refinery at San Roque, is among the most important in the country. Motril port is also flourishing since the opening of a new

connection with Melilla has increased traffic by 35 per cent. Almeria port has not been left behind either, having seen an increase in bulk merchandise of 100 per cent over the past year. Only Seville strikes a negative note – traffic of goods there has dropped just over 3 per cent in the past year.

Scarce rainfall blamed for jellyfish plague 2 Showrooms with over 30 kitchens, just to inspire

Nearly four tons of jellyfish were collected from Malaga city’s beaches over the weekend and almost 1,200 people were treated for stings. The red flags were raised on several beaches in Rincon de la Victoria, Marbella and Estepona to keep bathers out of a sea swarming with jellyfish, which forced some beaches to close temporarily on Monday. To make matters worse, this year the pests are bigger than ever. The good news is that their sting is not as bad as that of smaller species of jellyfish. Biologist Juan Jesus Marin explained to a local newspaper that the plague was the result of this spring’s scarce rainfall. Jellyfish normally live and breed some two miles off the coast but the lack of rainfall heats up the sea

Malaga thieves go on a spree The saga of the two Malaga thieves – a company owner and one of his employees – began on June 20th, when they robbed three banks in Madrid in less than three hours. Eight days later they robbed three more in the Salamanca district of Madrid. They copied their modus operandi from the film “Reservoir Dogs” – dressed in smart suits and wearing sun glasses, they stood in line and when they reached the cashier they donned motorcycle helmets and pulled guns. They used a motorbike to escape. They managed to stay ahead of the police because they lived in Malaga and only robbed banks in Madrid. But their luck finally ran out after a bank employee saw them take refuge in a bar near the bank in the Chamberi district of the capital after another robbery. Both men, aged 40 and 48, are currently in jail in Madrid.

Memo from

Voice Madrid Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Socialist ‘reality’

Rajoy and reality

A

hat little credibility Spain had with the Eurogroup is now all lost. Tuesday’s agreement, hammered out before dawn, to release €30 billion by the end of the month to go towards recapitalising Spanish banks was reached in the interests of all the nations involved.

s I write, Socialist Party spokeswoman Soraya Rodriguez is on the telly, waffling on about every minister and the PM having to appear in Parliament to explain their every move. As usual, she is trotting out what has almost become a mantra for the opposition – Rajoy is doing the opposite of everything he promised during the election campaign, and why doesn’t he simply tell us the truth. Now, if I remember rightly, former Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was also a dab hand at going back on his promises. In fact, his U-turns are the stuff of legend already. He also wouldn’t know what the truth was if you stuffed it up his nose. Who said the nation’s banks were strong and could resist any crisis? Zapatero. Who said recently that maybe he had been a bit slow off the mark when it came to tackling the crisis when it should have been tackled way back in 2007, 2008 at the latest? Zapatero. I keep telling the Socialists that in this hi-tech day and age, everything everybody says or does is recorded for posterity, but they’re not getting the message.

T

hen we have these famous debates that Rodriguez is going on about as I write. The opposition wants every little thing debated endlessly in Parliament, although when the Socialists were in power Zapatero was notorious for refusing to debate anything. It was a case of “I rule – you shut up”.

W

hen are the Socialists going to realise that the people don’t want more hot air, they want action and they can laugh at Rajoy as much as they like but at least he’s moving his ass, as our American friends would say, and I suspect he’ll be doing all the laughing this time next year.

M

eanwhile, how do the Socialists explain the latest survey – carried out by Metroscopio for none other than that Socialist stronghold, El Pais. For some inexplicable reason, the Socialists are now 13.9 percentage points behind the Partido Popular, which is maintaining an approval rating of 37 per cent despite all the austerity measures. Admittedly, the PP has lost seven percentage points since it won the last election, but the Socialists have lost even more. Could it be that people are beginning to think that – paradoxically – the “progressive” Socialists are living in the past and the tradition-bound conservatives (the

Partido Popular) are taking the future by the horns?

A

nd when are the Socialists and other opposition parties going to stop trying to govern the country? – voters gave the Partido Popular a majority to do just that. Right now, we have the situation where the Izquierda Unida (IU, the Communist-dominated United Left) thinks it runs the country, just because it got a few more seats than it did last time around. The Socialists think they’re still running the country, even though the party suffered the worst defeat in its history last November. And as for Rosa Diez, who got four more seats this time, up from one in the last Zapatero government, I simply don’t know what to make of her now. She used to be so level-headed and intelligent but success seems to have gone to her head – she’s currently taking the government to some court or other in an attempt to get all its legislation declared unconstitutional and overturned.

H

opefully they’ll all go away on holiday soon and let Rajoy get on with it!

Return to yesterday

A

s for living in the past I’ve had a sobering experience recently. I’m looking after a cat and plants for some friends who have gone to the UK for a few weeks. They live in the old part of town, which was a thriving area under the Moors for centuries. It’s the sort of architecture I love – we called it Spanish Colonial in Venezuela. Long narrow streets with permanently shuttered windows and doors open at this time of the year to give you a peek into another era. Being nosey, I can’t resist an open doorway in these small towns – they usually afford you a glimpse of tiled, cool, plant-packed patios which are a delight to the eye. There are a few patios like that in the street where my friends live, but I was shocked to see two or three interiors that took me back to the sixties, when I first lived here in Spain. Plant-less patios, hardly any furniture, flaking paint on cracked wood and dull floor tiles – so typical of the poverty that was rife here then. While a lot of Spaniards have never had it so good, others are still mired in the bad old days.

W

Rajoy

N

ow Spain has to show it will meet its side of the bargain and begin initiating a still-unknown packet of measures to demonstrate to Brussels that it means business when it says it wants to contain the deficit. In exchange for allowing Spain to relax it budgetdeficit goal for this year from 5.3 per cent of GDP to 6.3 per cent, Brussels is demanding that the Spanish government hike value added tax, which now stands at 18 percent, to a higher, still undisclosed rate. There were also discussions during the Eurogroup meeting about forcing the government to cut pensions once again – after Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy craftily promised to hike them, when they had been reduced by the previous Socialist administration, to win the retiree vote last year. Earlier in the day, Finance Minister Cristóbal Montero said that the government was studying a measure to extend public employees’ workdays; in other words, depending how you look at it, more time on the job for the same pay or salary cuts by extending the working week. After he was elected, Rajoy had also pledged not to raise taxes, especially VAT; cut public workers’ salaries; and denied that Spain would have to seek aid for its ailing banks. Nothing the prime minister has said this year has stuck.

T

hen we come to the Bankia scandal. The Partido Popular (PP) has been adamant to keep the investigation into the reported €23 billion in losses at the troubled lender out of Congress despite a growing number of

criminal and civil complaints being filed against Bankia’s board of directors. But now the High Court has stepped in and subpoenaed 33 current and former board members to testify as official targets of an investigation into possible swindling and falsification of documents regarding Bankia’s prospectus issued last year that attracted hundreds of thousands of investors before the bank was listed on the Spanish stock market. The complaint had been filed by the opposition UPyD party, which has been demanding a full inquiry in Congress after some 347,000 investors lost money – in some cases their entire life savings – during the investment drive. Among those being called are former chairman Rodrigo Rato, who was pressured into resigning in May when the Bank of Spain stepped in. Rato (better known among the El País Englishlanguage journalists by the anglicisation of his name, "Roderick Rat") is an influential PP member with strong connections to the current government. Cabinet members last week played down the 49-page order issued by Judge Fernando Andreu naming Rato and former Interior Minister Ángel Acebes, who served on the board of Bankia’s parent company Banco Financiero y de Ahorros (BFA), as official suspects in the case. The Bankia scandal – which has been making international headlines owing to the fact that Rato once served as general director at the IMF – and the subsequent inquiry will no doubt shed more light on the true state of health of Spain’s banks and the politicking and bickering among the parties which helped drive a host of lenders into the ground. Even though all the parties had their hand in the mixing bowl, including the unions which also appointed representatives to the boards of savings banks, the conclusions and possible criminal charges coming out of the investigation will be an international embarrassment to the government that is currently on watch.

D

estructive as they are, hurricanes are nature’s way of cleaning up chaos and clutter left by other forces. We can only hope that the High Court’s inquiry will prove to be a sweeping cyclone loaded with a couple of typhoons and tsunamis. Of course, there will always be Rajoy on the sidelines putting his spin on things, blaming the previous Socialist government and trying to pull the wool over our eyes. But Brussels will also be on the other side of the pitch telling him otherwise.

Mijas - Capital of Andablusia The 2012 annual Mijas Blues Festival lived up to all expectations last weekend with an excellent turn out on all three nights. Saturday night predictably pulled the biggest crowd of the weekend, blues fans literally packing the plaza from one side to the other. The laid back atmosphere was complimented by an exceptional cross section of really rich, high quality blues. The last minute cancellation by Maggie Ross, on doctors orders, was a bit of a disappointment. Maggie a veteran of the festival for several years is quite a favourite of the Mijas festival fans who

undoubtedly wish her well. The much publicised performance of Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers was also cancelled, their reasons for doing so are as yet still unknown, but apart from a few raised eyebrows and a philosophical shrug or two, it did little to dampen the event.

Tony ‘TnT’ Tucker heard how good Marlows fish and chips are and he could not resist sampling a portion of large cod and chips with mushy peas. After demolishing his meal he declared the grub at Marlows as ‘Dynamite’. Tony was in Spain to

How to help an abused animal There are increasing numbers of animal cruelty cases and people who come across them often don't know how to make an official complaint (denuncia) to the police. Seprona, the environmental arm of the Guardia Civil, has given the this set of guidelines on what to do. There are laws to protect animals from cruelty. They cannot complain when they need food or water, or shade from the sun or rain, or have been tied up on a short chain and then forgotten. But we can speak for them. This is what to do: 1. Go to your local Civil Guard base (Guardia Civil Cuartel). Neither the local police nor the National Police handle complaints

of this kind. 2. Take as much written information with you as you can. Names, addresses and a map showing where the animal is will help officers to easily investigate your complaint. 3. If you don’t speak Spanish, get someone who does to go with you or contact your local animal welfare society for help or information. 4. The Guardia Civil will give you a copy of the denuncia, and their copy will be given to Seprona for investigation. 5. Only Seprona will investigate. 6. Keep your copy of the denuncia, with this document. The incident can be followed up later. sent in by Beverley Saunders

DAVID THE DOGMAN WHY DO CATS PEE INDOORS? Part 1 Cats have many reasons to soil a house. House soiling (urinating, defecating and spraying outside of the litter box) is the most common behavioural problem reported by cat owners and is a major cause for cats to be abandoned or undergo euthanasia. To determine why a cat suddenly stops using its litter box requires time, some investigative skills and perseverance.

eliminated outside of the litter box because he was seeking revenge makes logical sense. In truth, cats probably don't have the cognitive ability to come to this conclusion. Furthermore, this assumption presumes that cats view urine or feces as distasteful and disgusting. In reality, humans may view them as yucky but to cats they are simple modes of communicating with other cats.

Why would a cat eliminate outside the litter box? Contrary to popular belief, mother cats do not teach their kittens to use litter. Kittens dig and use clean, loose material for elimination at four weeks of age without ever observing the mother using the material. Also, one must never assume that the fact a cat has

Review NEW HOME FOR SOS

After her first novel – The Magpie – was published local authoress J. G. Harlond fully intended that her next book would continue the adventures of its roguish hero Leo, set in the 1940s. However fate – in the shape of a somewhat supernatural experience – took a hand and she was diverted into the 17th century to write about another “not all good, not all bad” character she named Ludo (Ludovico). The Chosen Man tells the story of the great Tulip Bubble scandal when innocent people were conned into buying bulbs with the promise of great wealth to come (speculation in the futures market is no way confined to modern times), selling – and losing – everything they owned in the process. In the background too is a hive of political intrigue, machinations in the Vatican and aspirations of Spanish conquest, with Ludo playing a double game to his own advantage. J.G. Harlond, who lives in Coin, introduced her new book at a launch party at which she told the guests that she is now a full-time author with her next novel already in the pipeline. The Chosen Man, published by Knox Robinson is available from booksellers or you can order it on line from Amazon in book or Kindle format.

Pictured are volunteers with some of the SOS refuge dogs relaxing before heading back to their purpose-built pens in the charity’s new refuge for a well-earned afternoon nap! SOS acquired the pens from another local charity AID and during the discussions to transfer the refuge to SOS the two charities built up a good relationship based on working together to rehome a number of dogs. SOS co-founder Tony Byford said: “Times are tough for all charities so working together with a single aim – helping to find new homes for homeless animals – can only be a good thing and we look forward to further successes. The two charities continue to be completely independent of each other and any funds raised by our supporters will continue to support the work of SOS in caring for our animals,

paying for their veterinary care, preparing them for new homes and providing a permanent home for dogs not lucky enough to find new homes. Likewise, all funds raised by AID will go solely towards their work in supporting a foster network and individuals. SOS warmly thanks all those who supported us during the difficult months until we found our new home, including those who fostered, Bill and Denise Whitehair from Cat and Dog World, and our volunteers.

Love from everyone at The News

If a loved one died in Spain, would you know what to do? Ask yourself these questions: Who would you call? Do you know the Spanish system? Would you be able to deal with the Spanish Law and Customs? Would family members have time to attend the funeral, which is usually held within 48 hours? Upfront payment is usually required in the region of €4000, would this amount be readily available? Could you cope with these issues at an emotional and stressful time?

Alley Cats - a most surprising ALLEY CATS venue PUB All sports on 5 large screens.

This is one of the most unique bars on the Costa del Sol. Not only is it a lively sports bar but when the sports have finished, it transforms into a great music bar with an extensive and varied DVD collection. Alley Cats is owned and run by the most charming Irish people you will ever meet, making for a good craic and friendly atmosphere where everyone talks to everyone else…so you never feel like a stranger! Although they have five big TV screens which are all visible from any area of the bar, the bar’s most important aspect is its décor. Alley Cats’ walls and ceilings are adorned with a

fascinating collection of sports memorabilia, soccer, boxing, hurling, baseball and Irish football, which the owner has been collecting for over 20 years. If that isn’t enough to tempt you, it must be said that their ladies and gents toilets are, without doubt, the nicest you will ever

encounter. They, alone, are worth a visit if only to see how beautifully decorated and cared for they are! A lot of hard work has been put into making this pub a cosy, fun, welcoming bar, so come and visit next time you are in Los Boliches. Bet you won’t be disappointed.

It’s an epic journey for Scrat, Manny the woolly mammoth, tiger Diego and Sid the sloth which takes in being stranded on an ice floe, and bumping into

fierce pirates headed by Captain Gutt (Peter Dinklage). The world literally falls apart as Scrat’s pursuit of the prized acorn results in a seismic shift that affects the world’s plates – not necessarily geologically correct but important to move the plot along briskly. It’s been ten years since the first Ice Age outing so the studio has brought in some fresh characters

LOCKOUT

BEING FLYNN

Release date: July, 2012

Release date: July, 2012

Clearly inspired by John Carpenter’s Escape from New York as well as borrowing a significant plot element from its L.A.set sequel, the film takes place in the year 2079. It begins with its hero, Snow (Guy Pearce) – one name is much cooler than two in this sort of film – getting beaten to a pulp by a government agent (a glowering Peter Stormare) while responding to each blow with an insouciant wisecrack. It seems that Snow, a former agent himself, has been falsely accused of a crime and is about to be sent off to begin a 30-year sentence at MS-1, a maximum-security prison in outer space. But when

A young writer, coping with addiction, finally meets the drunk, delusional father he never knew at the homeless shelter where the writer works. That’s the improbable truth at the core of Being Flynn, the uneven but undeniably powerful film from writer and director Paul Weitz.

the hundreds of convicts suddenly wake up from their cryogenic state and take hostages, including the president’s daughter Emilie (Maggie Grace), Snow is offered his freedom in return for a solo rescue mission.

Based on Nick Flynn’s 2004 memoir, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City (great title), Being Flynn is a film that aches with sadness. Paul Dano excels as Nick, the budding writer, poet and playwright who drifts through his twenties until he takes a job at the New York homeless shelter that employs his girlfriend, Denise (Olivia Thirlby). Seeing his father, Jonathan

a brilliant cast, and the dialogue was rather quirky, I didn´t dislike the film. However, here I am counting the amount of words I need to fill this column – 360 and counting – and I´m stuck. There was nothing that epic about the film worth writing about, it was like every British movie, polite. arigold is entertaining M in a very British sort of way – it's characters are all

(Robert De Niro), lining up for the shelter is a jolt. Jonathan is a writer too, claiming to be on par with J.D. Salinger and Mark Twain. He unearths longburied memories of Nick’s childhood and his troubled mother, Jody (the eversuperb Julianne Moore).

a little repressed and class ridden to start with but by the end have discovered something more about themselves. It has a charm to it but is let down by a flaccid script, and weak direction – and a general sense of unease that this is some sort of post-colonial wish fulfillment – so we end up with a film that wants to be both a drama and a drama comedy and by doing so lacks all bite and spice. t is a perfect airplane Iandmovie, you can sit back relax and enjoy it, but it really has almost nothing

meaningful to say – this is not necessarily a bad thing –- as a light frothy piece about retirement as an adventure it is all rather jolly, and the cast do bring verve and energy to it, it just seems to meander and wander and it would be kind to say the characters are essentially caricatures who, even with some backstory, are never more than wispy at best. nd perhaps this is the A charm, Marigold is escapism, and a chance to fantasize about what life might be like. All in all, it will appeal to those who like their comedy safe and enjoy a fanciful tale well spun, but it is too lightweight to be anything other than instantly forgettable. here are people who Tinfluence think that films people. I do not believe that – just because you watch “Friday the 13th” doesn´t mean you´re going to run around and start murdering teenagers (no matter how tempting). If you have a good set of values and know right from wrong, you won´t be influenced by any film (because you´re better than that). Which brings me to my final point of why I didn´t “love” the Marigold Hotel. When Judi Dench applies for the job, all I kept thinking was: “you´re not allowed to do that, you need a work visa” – this made me angry. he fact is, if people are Tthereinfluenced by films, are far more people trying to be like Judi Dench and work illegally, than Jason the slasher!

You are moving into a more emotional phase Aries where you will feel a deeper connection to what is going on around you. Your powers of foresight are increased allowing you to sense what is about to happen, giving you an advantage in both your career and personal arenas. There is something about the way you hold yourself that is making others sit up and pay attention. Love, romance and passion are renewed as a bold spontaneous move on your part re-ignites the flame. This is a great time to meet people, however, it is a much better time to take things to deeper levels with those you already know and care about. There is a part of you that may have to admit you were wrong in the past, perhaps the information you based your actions on was invalid. Passion and sensual growth with a loved one is highlighted. As you place things in motion you will be building something solid beneath your feet and truly meaningful in your heart. It is time to put your foot down and draw that hard deep line in the sand. All those aspirations that you had shelved are now back on the table for you to pick up again. Confront what must be tackled and leave all that has run its use behind, your strong imagination will help you to find the answers, and solutions but in order to give yourself the greatest head start it is essential you allow yourself time to have fun and play, this is where you will find sudden inspiration. You haven’t had many choices or options coming your way for quite some time and now it has all changed as things are developing at an accelerated pace. You now need to move up a gear to take advantage of new chances as they appear. Before you had time to sit and think things through, now, it is moving beyond the words of others and determining if their actions really match, this will show you the relationships you can trust and those that are imitating. Others are going to sit up and take notice of you this week, you are certainly a force to be reckoned with. You will be like a warrior against those that may not be treating your loved ones fairly. Strange and unexpected news could be coming your way so be prepared to be adaptable as things may not happen as planned. There could be an opportunity to take a pathway unknown and this can cause a hint of fear inside as the lack of stability could unnerve you. Your time of struggles is over and you have been given a green light, so push ahead with doing whatever it is you have put on hold. Even if that thing is going out and having fun, this is your time. Knowing you Virgo you already have plan A, B and C on the backburner should you need to spring into action. Socially this is a good time as the fun and playful side of you emerges and confidence returns oozing from you.

This will be a fact paced week with lots to do, so make sure you plan ahead so that the important things get done. Put your listening ears on as information coming your way could be useful. By the weekend make sure you spend time with close friends and family, they will need and value your input at this time. Amazing things September 23rd - are likely to happen when you release your expectation and attachment to a certain October 22nd outcome.

Are we getting a bit serious this week Aquarius? It is your mission not to allow any of the negativity you encounter to be transferred to you, try and find a way to rise above it all. An old chapter is finishing right now and you are more than ready to see it close. You have simply been hanging on to a certain piece of the past and you feel ready now to put something to rest and move on. Stay open to the unusual.

News - Breakthroughs - Treatments - Trends

Some things you may not know about arthritis Arthritis literally means "inflammation of a joint" and millions suffer from it. From the best treatments and natural remedies to safe exercise and pain-reducing foods, arming yourself with knowledge is key to warding off aches. lYoung people do get arthritis Arthritis can affect people at any age, including during childhood. In fact, nearly 60% of people diagnosed are under age 65. Osteoarthritis, one of the most common types, typically affects people over 40, but it can happen sooner, especially if you've had a joint injury. Another common form, rheumatoid arthritis, is an autoimmune condition that launches a full-body attack, and it can strike as early as your 20s and 30s. lRheumatoid arthritis isn’t the most common type of arthritis There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, but osteoarthritis is the most common. In osteoarthritis, cartilage – the slippery tissue that protects the ends of your bones in the joint – gradually wears down. You might notice that your knees feel achier than usual after you work out, or that you feel stiff when you climb out of bed in the morning. No one knows exactly what causes this

cartilage breakdown, but a combination of factors like aging, joint injuries, genetic tendencies, and obesity are all thought to play a role. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) occurs when antibodies in the immune system – which normally work to fend off germs – attack the lining of your joints, causing pain, swelling, and warmth, and limiting your mobility. Research shows that the number of women with RA is on the rise. lBeing

overweight may cause osteoarthritis Carrying around extra pounds increases stress on the joints, which may lead to arthritis of the knees. The good news is, you don't have to lose a lot to make a difference. When you walk, your knees absorb a force equal to about three times your body weight. So losing just 10 pounds actually relieves each knee of about a 30-pound load with every stride you take. lArthritis doesn’t always have symptoms The first stages of

osteoarthritis may be silent; mild cartilage damage typically has no symptoms. Arthritis is most likely to show up in hands and weight-bearing joints, including the knees, hips, spine, lower back, neck, and end joints of the fingers. But it's only when there is significant cartilage loss that you'll notice real pain and loss of joint function. Unlike osteoarthritis, which affects primarily the hips and knees, RA tends to attack the hands and feet. If you have RA, your painful joints will be red and warm. RA may cause fever and flu-like symptoms, too. RA tends to alternate between periods of remission (when you have no or few symptoms) and flares (when the disease is active). lRegular

exercise may help with arthritis flare-ups If you want to reduce pain, take fewer medications, improve your flexibility, and avoid joint replacement surgery, you have to exercise, the experts say. Most types of moderate, low-impact exercise are

helpful, but experts especially recommend strength-training, water workouts and stretching. If you find walking too uncomfortable, swimming is a good option because it doesn't put as much pressure on your knees. In fact, one recent study found that people with arthritis in their knees or hips who did water exercises for six weeks reported less joint pain and better overall quality of life. lWearing gloves can soothe stiff hands If you wake up with stiff, swollen hands, consider wearing gloves to bed. Swelling can occur when body fluids resettle at night. The experts recommend snug-fitting, stretchy gloves. lNatural remedies can be as

effective as prescription meds Pills can offer some relief from arthritis, but natural cures have a bigger payoff in the long run. The most common pain relief prescribed for arthritis is nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, or

Summer health myths debunked You probably already know that going for a swim within 30 minutes of eating a sandwich isn't going to cause you to cramp up and sink helplessly to the bottom of the pool. But there’s plenty more lame summertime advice that you might still believe. Let’s set the record straight. lPeeing

on a jellyfish sting will ease the pain. Though it may sound convenient, urine hasn't been proven to curb the hurt. What has is vinegar – its acidity is believed to inactivate the stingers and diminish the pain. Soak a paper towel in household white vinegar and hold it on the wound for about 30 minutes. Afterward, use an OTC hydrocortisone cream to quell any itching. If, however, you start to feel dizzy or nauseated or develop

any kind of rash, you may be having an allergic reaction and should get yourself to a doctor right away. lGoing

in and out of airconditioned buildings can make you sick. If you feel congested or start sniffling, it's likely due to summer allergies, the experts say. People who have allergies even small sensitivities – may be affected when moving from a clean-air environment into one that's full of Mother Nature's irritants. If your symptoms are on overdrive, try staying inside on very hot, humid days, when outdoor allergens are at their most potent. And keep your home dust and mould free by cleaning your AC filter every month or by investing in an air purifier that eliminates 99% of airborne contaminants.

lThe safest place to be during a lightning storm is in a car because it has rubber tyres. You'll be safe in a car, but not because of the rubber tires. The car's frame is like a metal cage – if struck, lightning will flow around its outside. (Metal is a good conductor of electricity; rubber is not.) If you're driving in a storm, don't touch metal door handles or the radio, which is wired to the outside antenna. lFlip-flops

are kind to your

feet. Most flip-flops don't have adequate arch support, cushioning, or shock absorption and wearing them all summer, every summer could lead to pinched foot nerves, heel pain, tendonitis, and strained arches. If you can't quit flops entirely, buy ones that have at least a three-quarter-inch

semi cushioned sole and built-in arch support. Even better, go for a strappy sandal; simple thongs force your toes into an unhealthy clenched position when you walk, encouraging hammertoe growth. lA

dip in the pool can do double duty as a shower. Most people don't rinse off before they go swimming so the chemicals in personalcare products, sweat, and makeup can interfere with chlorine, making it much less effective. The result is that public pools are often swarming with nasties such as cryptosporidium, which can bring on diarrhoea, ear infections, and skin rashes. Showering after a dip can wash bacteria off your skin and cut your risk of getting sick. Use soap – a quick hoseoff may not be enough.

NSAIDS, which can cause bleeding ulcers. The experts suggest trying a combination of two cartilage-building nutrients known as glucosamine and sulfate methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM. Taking 750 milligrams of glucosamine sulfate two times a day for at least six weeks relieves pain and heals joints by building up the cartilage that protects the ends of bones so they don't run together. For optimum results, take glucosamine with 400 milligrams of MSM three times a day, which may slash inflammatory chemicals called cytokines linked with arthritis pain. lFood

can help ease arthritis pain Eating foods known to fight inflammation, a symptom of both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, may ease pain, they experts say, and recommend that your weekly diet include several servings of antiinflammatory omega-3 fatty acids from foods such as wild Alaskan salmon and

other cold-water fish, freshly ground flaxseed, omega-3-fortified eggs, and walnuts. Season meals with ginger and turmeric as often as possible; these spices appear to possess antiinflammatory properties. You may have heard that certain vegetables, such as tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and aubergines, can worsen arthritis pain, but there is little good scientific evidence to support this theory. However, two ingredients known to trigger inflammation are polyunsaturated vegetable oils (such as corn and soy oils) and the partially hydrogenated oils found in many margarines, vegetable shortenings, and processed foods.

A legend of film and TV dies … and yet another music festival in the UK turns into a mudbath in the rain. It was confirmed on Monday this week that Ernest Borgnine, who had a string of film blockbusters spanning his 60 years in the business, has died aged 95 after he succumbed to renal failure surrounded by his family at CedarsSinai hospital in Los Angeles. He completed his final film earlier this year. Born Ermes Effron Borgnino in Connecticut in 1917, the son of Italian immigrants, he served in the Navy before taking drama classes following World War II, winning an Oscar for his performance of Marty, a romantic butcher in 1955. He was known for playing gravelly-voiced rough guys due to his

stocky build. Probably best known for his roles in such films as The Poseidon Adventure, Gattaca, Escape From New York, The Wild Bunch, The Dirty Dozen, he also played in several TV shows including Airwolf in the 80s and in 2009 he was nominated for an Emmy after appearing in the medical drama ER. Off screen, he used his voice in Spongebob Squarepants, Mermaidman and as himself in The Simpsons episode ‘Boy-Scoutz n’ The Hood’. Once married to singer Ethel Merman, his last of five marriages – to Tova Traesnaes – was to last from 1972 . He is survived by three children.

OMG... How old?? Not possible! It seems like only “yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away” but the revelation that exBeatle Ringo Starr hit 72-years-old this week came as a bit of a shock. We all merrily jog along thinking we’re still teenagers and then, someone who was one of your heroes when you really were a teenager gets to a ripe old age. Ringo celebrated his birthday this year in his usual “Give Peace a Chance” moment at noon that carried on from 2008 when he was asked what he wanted for his birthday. Answering that he wanted everybody to just sit and think then “give peace a chance” this is how has spent it ever since. This year was at the Hard Rock Café in Nashville. Last year was in Hamburg, Germany, the year before that was in Chicago. He said that they get lots of blogs from all

Asked how he looks so good for his age he said there is nothing magical about it. He works out, has a personal trainer, does pilates, loves to walk and he watches what he eats. “There is no Whoo Hoo gotta do this or that about it”, he explained. He is currently on tour with his 13th All Starr Band in America.

Superintendent Rick Dunkerley, event commander, said: "I think it's fair to say that the conditions have been challenging for them but they have refused to let anything dampen their enthusiasm. Their attitude has been terrific and has ensured that we are all enjoying another excellent T in the Park festival.”

Festival director Geoff Ellis said: "The weather definitely brought some challenges but we were prepared and our team worked extremely hard to keep things on track, which was no mean feat. The overwhelming response from those that were here was that, regardless of the rain, they had an absolutely amazing time, whether they saw Simple Minds or Calvin Harris. That's not just down to a brilliant line-up – it's also due to the enormous amount of planning that we undertake and the strong partnerships we have with emergency services and

stewards. The sense of camaraderie was obvious throughout the day but when the Stone Roses took to the stage it went off the scale. This was the moment that so many people were waiting for and the fans sang their hearts out. It was amazing."

A fire stopped filming on the latest in the Die Hard series after a pyrotechnics stunt went out of control, setting fire to a building last Thursday. 20th Century Fox reported that part of the set was destroyed but no-one was injured in the incident. Die Hard 5 is due for release in February 2013. New York policeman John McClane, the lead role that is played by the rather fit looking 57-year-old veteran Hollywood star Bruce Willis, returns to the screen 25 years after the first film in 1988, and after film number four Live Free Or Die Hard grossed around £247 million worldwide. Willis returned to the set on Monday to re-start

filming following the incident on the fifth in the Die Hard series entitled A Good Day To Die Hard – currently being shot in the Hungarian capital of Budapest that is being used to represent Russia. In the film, McClane must travel to Russia to get his son, played by Australian actor Jai Courtney out of trouble. He was not present at the time of the fire. Directed by John Moore, the film also stars Patrick Stewart and German actor Sebastian Koch.

Jane Newman Yet another burglary occured in the Coin area last week and this time they hit a charity. Sue from the horse rescue charity SEARCH found that her tack room with all the animals bridles, saddles etc had been broken into and the lot had gone. There was an English saddle, a small pony saddle, bridles and headcollars. These are people trying to do good work here helping out horses and ponies that have been abandoned and mistreated and this is what they get for their troubles. It is believed the thieves are three men in a white van and while one of them is distracting dogs or other animals, the other two are breaking into your property. However, to every cloud there is a silver lining and Coin residents Jackie and Harold Rice came to the rescue with some equipment they had

In the meantime, please, everybody, if you see a car, van or any vehicle in your area that you don’t recognise or think it doesn’t belong where it is, make a note of the date, time and a short description of the vehicle and people inside. Better still, take a photo on your phone or camera! These people have to be stopped. Also, make a note of all the serial numbers of the electrical goods in your home and do a general inventory as these people are taking everything.

Mrs J Hollowell Some weeks ago you featured a small article on two young ladies – I think they call themselves “Divalicious” – who entertain all along the coast here. I read all the English newspapers and never see them advertised anywhere. I had the sheer good good fortune to see and hear them on St. George’s Day in Mezquita Square. They were brilliant and I wish to find out more. Do you know if they have produced a DVD, or even a CD, and if possible where one

spare – a bridle, headcollars etc, and also gave them a donation. Everybody is struggling to survive at the moment but these two kind people pulled out all the stops to help Sue and her colleagues at SEARCH at a very distressing time and they would like to say a huge “THANK YOU!” to them both.

Size matters It’s good to do this anyway and update it from time-to-time for insurance purposes, take photo’s of each room in your house so you can prove what was in there too and, if the worst comes to the worst, the police may be able to track your belongings and get them back to you in this way. Also, if you are offered, or see anything that might belong to SEARCH in the markets etc, let them or the police know. Call Sue on 660 220 700 ASAP.

could be obtained? Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you. We always find your paper very interesting, although I do find the codeword puzzle hard to read as the numbers are so tiny. (I have to keep nicking my husband’s magnifying glass!) Good luck to your future success.

Editor says: It’s a shame you didn’t put your phone number or email address on your letter delivered by post as Divalicious were appearing at El Mojito in

Philip Holman I have read a lot about the new prescription rates for pensioners from 1st July 2012. However nowhere seems clear regarding the situation for British ex-pat pensioners, me being one who needs repeat prescriptions for the rest of my life. I was led to believe that Spain is reimbursed by the UK Government for these costs and it is unclear if we should be charged if we are residents with the health card, NIE, and Padron etc. I have emailed the British Consul in Malaga but as yet have not had a response. Are you able to clarify things for the many hundreds in the same situation?

Carihuela, Torremolinos last Sunday but there was no way to contact you to let you know so, I hope you noticed it was on their advert in The News last week. That being said, I have called the restaurant and they will get Divalicious to leave a DVD or CD if they have one so that you can purchase it from there. As far as the Codeword puzzle is concerned, we made the numbers bigger a couple of weeks ago so I hope you can now give your husband back his glass, poor chap!

Mijas Costa

I got a really interesting email last week asking me to explain the size of our solar system, so I thought about putting it all in scale and I came up with some very interesting numbers.

I

n astronomy, you often hear the phrase ‘light years’ being used. A light year is the distance that a beam of light travelling at 300,000 kilometres per second would travel in one year. It is an unimaginable distance of about nine and a half trillion kilometres. Now I don’t know about you but I can’t imagine what nine and a half trillion kilometres looks like!

S

o, to make it a bit easier to imagine, it would be better to shrink the solar system down to a more manageable size. So let’s make the Sun a ball three metres in diameter and place it in Fuengirola centre on the sea front, directly behind the statue that is there. If you have some free time you may like to try this yourself.

N

ow if you start to walk in the direction of Los Boliches go 125 metres to just outside the children’s playground area and here would be the first planet, Mercury a ball 10mm across, about the size of a marble. This is almost 60 million km in real life. Carry on walking 233 metres to outside Bogart’s bar and find Venus, 26mm or just over one inch in diameter.

K

eep going until you reach the London Bar directly opposite the taxi rank at 322 metres from the Sun is Earth about 27mm in size. You would now be 150 million km or 93 million miles from the Sun.

I Editor says: As I understand it this new rule will be bringing the Brits, and any other European Passport holders in line with the Spanish who already pay a small amount towards any drugs they need. However, we will be clarifying matters in respect of this in the near future as there are moves afoot to exclude Andalucia from these charges. As usual, it is all up in the air at the moment but as soon as we find out a definitive answer we will publish our findings and let you know what is happening.

t’s been easy up to here but now you need your best hiking boots. Next stop is Mars 490 meters from the Sun next to the children’s carousel ride. Mars would be only 14.5mm in size.

I

t’s a bit of a trek now until you come to the Yaramar Hotel 1677 metres from the Sun and here would be the giant planet Jupiter 300mm (about 1 foot) in diameter. The distance to each planet from the Sun very nearly doubles as you move further out, each being almost twice as far as the one before. So it wouldn’t surprise you to find that you have to walk 3075meters, almost two miles to Saturn at the Ocean View restaurant at the junction to Torreblanca. Although Saturn is slightly smaller than Jupiter, with the rings added it is almost 400mm about 17inches across.

J

ump in the car and head out towards Benelmadena and when you get to the elephant roundabout at the Holiday Village complex you would find a croquet ball about 100mm in size, this is the planet Uranus. Head on out to Benelmadena harbour nine and a half kilometres or six miles from the Sun, and here is the last of the true planets, Neptune, a ball just slightly smaller than Uranus.

I

f you want to keep going then you have to pass Torremolinos, and come to the end of the runway at Malaga airport and here there would be a tiny ball 7mm across and this is Pluto. On this scale, the nearest star to the Sun, Alpha Centauri, would be 87000 km or 54000 miles, that’s twice the distance around the Earth!

T

he Apollo rockets that went to the Moon were travelling at 27,000mph and took about four days to reach the Moon. In 1977 NASA launched Voyager 1 on a grand tour of the outer planets. Voyager 1 is travelling at almost 40,000 mph, which is about 10 miles per second; it reached Jupiter in March 1979 and Saturn in November 1980. Last month, June 2012, NASA announced that Voyager 1 had officially left the Solar System 34 years and 10 months after launch. Voyager 1 is not heading towards any particular star but in about 40,000 years it will pass very close to a star that is only 17 light years away from us.

S

o I’m afraid that unless we invent the Starship Enterprise from Star Trek that can travel at warp speed then travel by humans to the outer planets and definitely travel to the stars is going to be a very long journey indeed.

H

appy stargazing!

Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen were flying, and, even though he had to pit early due to a coming together with Paul De Resta, Grosjean finished just behind his team mate in sixth place. Pastor Maldonado was handed a reprimand and fine following his coming together with Sergio Perez. Perez had called for the FIA to take action after the incident, branding the

Williams driver a 'danger' and warning that unless something is done to teach the Venezuelan a lesson, 'someone may get hurt'. Maldonado unsurprisingly, saw things differently and he insisted that he had just lost the rear of the car, and that it was 'just racing' The stewards, however, didn't see it as a racing incident, hence the reprimand and 10,000 Euro fine. There was trouble too

for Kamui Kobayashi who was also fined after he badly misjudged his entry into the Sauber pit box during the final round of stops and ended up bowling over several of his mechanics. He will have to pay €25,000 for his indiscretion. No one was seriously injured. By Mike Kerrigan

Lewis BMW to invest a further £250m Hamilton carries Olympic torch BMW has confirmed it will invest a further £250m in its three Mini factories in the UK, safeguarding thousands of jobs.

Fresh from a disappointing eighth place at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, Lewis Hamilton swapped his driving gloves for some running shoes on Monday morning as he carried the Olympic Torch through Luton. He also told the BBC he will continue to push as hard as he can in the F1 world championship, but feels the McLaren is a long way off the pace of the Red Bulls.

The money will be invested in manufacturing operations by the end of 2015 at the German car maker's plant in Oxford, steel body pressings operation at Swindon and engine plant at Hams Hall near Birmingham. The company also announced further volume growth with up to 10 different Mini models, with the potential for additional

Dani Pedrosa took his first win of the season, and 1000cc era, after going wheel-to-wheel with teammate Casey Stoner for almost the entire 30 lap distance in Sunday's German MotoGP at Sachsenring. Stoner, who came into the race tied with Jorge Lorenzo for the title lead, was pushing to pass Pedrosa and claim his fourth win of the year when he lowsided out of second place at the penultimate turn. The Australian sprang to his feet after the highspeed slide, but his bike was too badly damaged to continue. This gifted Lorenzo a surprise second place, after a lonely race that saw the Spaniard pass team-mate Ben Spies early on but

never able to match the Repsol riders. Lorenzo is now back in the title lead by 14 points from Pedrosa with Stoner 20 points behind after eight of 18 rounds. Front row starter Spies was soon locked in a thrilling dice with Yamaha Tech 3 team-mates Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow. Three abreast across the track for lap after lap but, three became two when Crutchlow ran through the turn one gravel with five laps remaining. Dovizioso managed to keep Spies at bay by less than a tenth of a second to claim what had been fourth, but suddenly turned into the Italian's third podium of the season.

Australian Mark Webber won an exciting British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where for most of the race he had followed the race leader Fernando Alonso. Alonso showed once again that he is going to be the driver you have to beat if you want to win the driver’s championship. Only let down by the strategy of using the soft option tyre for the final stint, Alonso drove a magnificent race but at the end had to settle for second behind Webber. While the two McLaren’s of Button and Hamilton struggled for pace, Lotus duo Romain

Siem answers his critics Marcel Siem of Germany shot a 4-under 67 on Sunday to win the French Open, edging out Francesco Molinari of Italy by one stroke. Siem had five birdies and one bogey to finish at 8under 276, earning his second European Tour title. He also won the 2004 Dunhill Championship in South Africa. Molinari started the round in 22nd place, six

strokes off the lead. He dropped two shots on his opening hole but then sank nine birdies to shoot a 64 for the lowest round of the day. Raphael Jacquelin of France had a 69 to finish third, two strokes off the pace. Overnight leaders David

Howell of England and Anders Hansen of Denmark bogeyed two of their first three holes to surrender the lead to a group of four tied at 6 under – Ian Poulter, Jacquelin, Siem and Molinari. Despite gusts of wind reaching 21 miles per hour, Molinari managed to set a target of 277 for the other contenders. Siem took a two-stroke lead with short birdies on the 14th and the 15th, while Poulter and Henrik

Stenson of Sweden tied Molinari by picking up a shot on the 16th. But Poulter's momentum stalled when he bogeyed the penultimate hole eventually closing with a 69 to share fourth with compatriots David Lynn and Howell at 279.

Giggs named as Team GB captain Welsh winger Ryan Giggs will captain Britain's football team at the London Olympics. The 38-year-old, is oldest of the three over-age players allowed in the 18man squad, and is taking part in his first international tournament. He will captain the side for the first time when they play Brazil in a warm-up at Middlesbrough on July 20th. "He has been a fantastic professional over the years and he was the standout candidate in a group that has got Aaron Ramsey the Wales captain, and Micah Richards who has captained Manchester City,

and one or two other candidates," said Pearce. "He’s got the respect of the group and the dressing room – I sense that straight away – and he’s got the respect of me and my coaching staff. Giggs's trophy-laden career at United includes 12 Premier League titles Champions and two Leagues.

Wiggins remains in yellow after stage win in individual time trial The first real climb of the Tour saw Team Sky enjoy their finest day so far as Chris Froome claimed a spectacular win on stage seven of the Tour de France and Bradley Wiggins finished third to move into the leader's yellow jersey. The team set a ferocious

pace up the climb. The peloton soon split, and when Porte took over the pacesetting the front group had been whittled down to just eight riders. And it was soon down to five with reigning champion Cadel Evans (BMC Racing), Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-

Cannondale) and Rein Taaramae (Cofidis) the only riders able to stay with Froome and Wiggins. It was Froome now doing all the work, and when Australian Evans accelerated away with one kilometre to go Froome, Wiggins and Nibali went with him. This was the steepest part of the climb and they were all out of their saddles, Froome then somehow found the energy to overtake Evans and sprint for the line for a stunning first Tour stage win which also netted him the polka dot jersey for leading the mountains classification. Wiggins is only the fifth Briton to don the maillot jaune, following Tom Simpson (1962), Chris Boardman (1994, 1997 and 1998), Sean Yates (1994) and David Millar (2000). He has now held the leader's jersey in all three Grand Tours.

Wiggins retained the overall lead the next day as French youngster Thibaut Pinot took off on his own to win stage eight. Wiggins repelled late attacks from his main rivals Vincenzo Nibali and Cadel Evans, the 2011 winner, on the descent into Porrentruy to remain in yellow. The trio finished together, in a bunch 26 seconds behind 22-year-old Pinot. Stage nine on Monday saw Bradley Wiggins extend his lead in the Tour de France completing the demanding individual time trial on a hilly stage nine course in 51 minutes and 24 seconds, beating Team Sky teammate Chris Froome into second place by 35 seconds. It was Wiggins’s first ever stage victory in the world’s greatest cycling race. Defending champion Cadel Evans, who started the

David Haye oversleeps Dereck Chisora has criticised David Haye for not attending a media event to publicise their fight next Saturday. The Zimbabwean-born boxer called Haye a "drama queen" ahead of the bout, which will take place at Upton Park. Former WBA world heavyweight champion Haye claimed he had overslept when explaining his absence on Twitter. "Just woke up! Apparently I slept through a media call! Hope I didn't miss out on anything interesting coming out of Del Boy's mouth," he said. The pair brawled at a news conference in Munich in February after Chisora lost to WBC champion Vitali Klitschko, and their feud has continued in the build-up to their controversial clash in London.

Has Murray finally endeared himself to British fans? Tennis fans turned up to Centre Court expecting history to be made. But It was Roger Federer rather than Andy Murray who once again ripped apart the record books. It wasn’t to be a first British winner in over 74 years, instead Federer became only the third player to amass seven Wimbledon titles, as he drew level with Pete Sampras and William Renshaw, and earned his17th Grand Slam title overall. And so “Braveheart” Andy Murray must wait again, maybe the US Open will be his first grand slam title...

Trump opens his Scottish golf course as critical film opens Donald Trump was yesterday branded a “bullyboy billionaire” who has turned one of Scotland’s most environmentally important stretches of coastline into an “alien landscape” as he flew into Aberdeen for the grand opening of the “world’s greatest golf course”. The opening comes as “You’ve Been Trumped” begins playing in U.K. movie theatres. The film criticises the way Trump, 66, bulldozed the wishes of neighbouring landowners

The Scottish Wildlife Trust is calling on Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie and other top golfers taking part in today’s opening ceremony to boycott those holes built on the former site of special scientific interest at the tycoon’s Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire.

And Patrick Harvie, the leader of the Scottish Green Party, launched an astonishing tirade against Trump, backing the charity’s call and claiming that the billionaire businessman has been at the centre of a saga which had been a “monumental embarrassment for Scotland and its governments”.

John Terry trial ' I will not be called racist', court hears Chelsea captain John Terry said he was "not prepared to be called a racist", his trial has heard. He is at Westminster Magistrates' Court over allegations he racially abused QPR's Anton Ferdinand. The case relates to a comment allegedly made to Queen’s Park Rangers defender Mr Ferdinand when the teams played last October. The 31-year-old former England captain denies a racially-aggravated public order offence. The court was played an interview between FA investigator Jennifer Kennedy and Mr Terry carried out a week after the game. In it, Mr Terry said: "I have been called a lot of things in my football career on and off

Crutchlow in talks with Ducati Cal Crutchlow has confirmed he is in discussions with Ducati about joining their factory MotoGP team next season. Crutchlow, 26, has had an outstanding season for the Tech 3 Yamaha team but wants a factory ride for 2013. The Briton told BBC Sport: "We're in deep discussions with Ducati because at the moment there's nothing for me at Yamaha. I can stay at Tech 3 but not on a factory machine. You won't win a title if you're not on a factory machine." The best bikes in MotoGP are the six in the factory teams of Yamaha, Ducati and Repsol Honda. They benefit from updates and higher spec machinery before the other teams, who lease their bikes from the factories.

Sir Roger Bannister carries the Olympic torch at iconic track Roger Bannister has carried the Olympic torch across the finish line of the Oxford track where he became the first runner to break the 4minute barrier for the mile 58 years ago. The 83-year-old Bannister walked 30 yards along the iconic track on Tuesday, holding the Olympic torch in his left hand as hundreds cheered the Oxford-educated neurologist who has become the embodiment of sporting achievement in Britain. Bannister says he feels "right at home" on the

track where he ran the mile in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds on May 6, 1954. He says the strong winds on a chilly, rainy Tuesday reminded him of that historic day when "the weather was so bad that I nearly decided not to attempt it." He returned to Oxford's Iffley Road stadium to carry the Torch 17 days ahead of London 2012 and graced the same track in which he ran one of the most iconic mile runs. Sir Roger became a worldwide phenomenon in 1954 when he broke the four-minute mile feat.

Heather Watson backed up her run to the Wimbledon third round by reaching round two at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, United States. The 20-year-old, up to a career-high ranking of 79, beat world number 49 Sloane Stephens of the United States 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-1.Watson was broken three times in the first set and twice in the second, but recovered to take the third with ease. She will now face Belgian fifth seed Yanina Wickmayer.
