Germans plan to employ Spanish youth The German government are making it easier for young Spaniards to look for work WORLD NEWS - MEXICAN DRUG MONEY TIED TO HSBC

HSBC 'allowed drug money laundering' A US Senate investigation has revealed how lax controls at Europe's largest bank left it vulnerable to being used to launder dirty money from around the world. The report into HSBC, released ahead of a Senate hearing on Tuesday, said huge sums of Mexican drug money almost certainly passed through the bank, as well as suspicious funds from Syria, the Cayman Islands, Iran and Saudi Arabia. The report also concluded that the US bank regulator, the Office of

the Comptroller of the Currency, failed to properly monitor HSBC. The report was issued by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, a Congressional watchdog that looks at financial improprieties. The year-long inquiry, which included a review of 1.4 million documents and interviews with 75 HSBC officials and bank regulators, was the focus of a hearing on Tuesday at which HSBC executives testified, including HSBC's chief legal officer Stuart Levey, who joined the bank in January and was previously one of the top officials on terrorism and finance at the US Treasury Department. In a memo released ahead of the hearing, HSBC chief executive Stuart Gulliver said: "It is right that we will be held accountable and that we take responsibility for fixing what went wrong.” A separate HSBC statement

said its executives will offer a formal apology at the hearing: "We will apologise, acknowledge these mistakes, answer for our actions and give our absolute commitment to fixing what went wrong." Senator Carl Levin, chairman of the subcommittee, spoke of a "polluted" system that allowed black-market funds to move through the US banking system. In 2010, Wachovia agreed to pay $160m as part of a Justice Department probe that examined Mexican transactions. CONTINuED ON PAgE 2

A fugitive alleged to be part of the Basque terrorist group, ETA, has been arrested in Edinburgh - more than 10 years after he went on the run. By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

I said last week that I was to be taking a short trip to the UK and that’s exactly what I did from Thursday to Sunday last weekend. We went to see the biannual Farnborough Air Show and I’ll be telling you more about that next week but for now, suffice it to say that the weather was cold, it poured with rain, the cloud cover was so low that some of the aerobatics had to be pulled back a bit but, we took the right clothes and it was great! To be cold for a change was lovely, we brits are after all northern europeans and are used to the cold. We stayed with friends whose house happens to be literally at the end of Farnborough Airport’s runway so when our legs had given out, we could go and watch the Red Arrows zooming around from the comfort of an armchair looking through a window in a centrally heated house. Talking of which, I have found that I really don’t like central heating much any more. I find it very drying and from going from someone in the UK who used to whack up the heat to fever type temperatures, I found I was turning off all the rads in the area of the house we were staying in... maybe it’s my age!! The only dampener on the whole weekend was that our plane was delayed by 7 hours on the way back from Gatwick with a technical fault so we didn’t get to bed until 4am Sunday morning and, of course, had to open up the office for the usual 10am start. Still rather late than fall out of the sky. Also, the seat I was sitting in on the plane was only 15” wide child sized really - so it’d better be back on the diet or avoid flying!

Benat Atorrasagasti Ordoñez, 36, was held in an armed raid late on Friday night in Leith following a joint operation between Lothian and Borders Police and Spain’s Guardia Civil. Spain's Interior Ministry said he had rented property there for "some time". It said Ordoñez, from San Sebastian, was a "carrier" for ETA, taking people and materials across the border between Spain and France. He fled to France in 2001. In 2008 he was sentenced in his absence by the Paris Correctional Court to five years in prison. Ordoñez was put on Spain's "most wanted" list that same year. Ordoñez appeared at Edinburgh's sheriff court for an initial extradition hearing on Monday. He is wanted under two extradition warrants, from France and Spain. Ordonez denies being a terrorist. His solicitor, Aamer Anwar, told the court his client "does

not consent to the extradition proceedings and denies any wrongdoing in France or in Spain". He added that, despite media speculation, Ordonez "is no threat to the Olympics" in London.

Remanding Ordoñez in custody ahead of a full hearing next month, Sheriff Alistair Noble said the alleged offences were "of very great seriousness". Lothian and Borders Police issued the following statement following his court appearance: "We can confirm Benat Atorrasagasti Ordoñez has appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on two European Arrest Warrants originating from 2001 and 2008, which were issued in

His arrest was not linked in any way to the Olympic Games in London, and at no time were the general public in the Leith area of Edinburgh, where he was residing, at risk. Mr Atorrasagsti Ordoñez was remanded in custody and, as extradition proceedings are now ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further"

All our airconditioners provide heating at very low cost. Because they operate via a heat pump, they use less than half the electricity of oil-filled radiators or other electric heaters. John will explain!

The extra Christmas payment was in many cases already budgeted for: insurance, a new washing machine, dental work, college funds, etc. But the main gripe of the sector is that all the deficit-cutting zeal of the administration seems to fall squarely on the shoulders of the lower paid. “Let them start cutting from the top down” has become a familiar refrain.

Ambassador sacked over soccer rant

Education Minister Jose Ignacio Wert signed an agreement with his German counterpart, Annette Schavan, in Stuttgart last week, to give more young Spaniards onthe-job training with German firms. Spain's youth unemployment currently stands at 52 per cent - the highest rate in the EU. After the signing, Mr Wert told reporters: "We want

Germany to be our sherpa on this job training adventure. We have 1.5 million university students and only 270,000 trade school students." He added that students were getting far more theory than practical experience, and that many lacked foreign language skills. The education minister toured a Daimler workshop for trainees in Esslingen, near Stuttgart,

Ms Schavan. Germany's "dual" education system, combining numerous practical apprenticeships with classroom studies, is widely admired in Europe and seen as a vital factor in Germany's export success.

German firms doing business in Spain will be encouraged to hire and train more young Spaniards. Germany's youth unemployment rate, at 7.9%, is much lower than in many of Germany's EU partners.

Ms Schavan told reporters Germany would expand educational exchanges with Spain and help Madrid develop its own dual system. She said

The German government has already made it easier for young Spaniards to look for work in certain sectors.

Foreign minister José manuel García-margallo sacked Spain’s ambassador to Poland since 2008, Francisco Fernández Fábregas, over some humorous comments about the French, 13 days after the quarterfinal match between Spain and France in the European soccer championship. The ambassador was caught on film saying "Vamos, a dar por saco a los franceses!" ("Let's screw the French!") at the dinner held in his official residence to watch Spain's 2-0 win with a group of Spanish entrepreneurs living in Warsaw. He was wearing a Spanish team shirt given to him by team captain iker Casillas. madrid

Nawaf Fares, exambassador to Iraq, told the BBC that unconfirmed reports indicated these weapons may have already been used in the city of Homs. Mr Fares also said that major bombings across Syria had been orchestrated by the regime in collaboration with alQaeda. Worst US drought since 1956 The US is currently suffering its widest drought since 1956, according to data released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on Monday. Its report said that by the end of June 55% of the continental US was in a moderate to extreme drought. As much as 80% of the US is abnormally dry,

the report said, noting that the drought expanded in the West, Great Plains and Midwest areas. June was the 14th warmest and 10th driest since records began in 1895, NOAA said. Mubarak ordered back to prison Egypt's public prosecutor Abdel Maguid Mahmoud has ordered that former President Hosni Mubarak be returned to prison on the grounds that his health had improved. Mr Mahmoud's deputy, Adel al-Saeed, said that a panel of doctors had earlier established that the former president's "health is currently stable with medication, and it is considered good for

someone of his age." Mubarak, 84, was moved from prison to a hospital last month after reports that his health had deteriorated. He was said at the time to have had a series of strokes and to be on a life support machine. Reports that he was "clinically dead" were later denied. Local observers have said any report about his health has to be treated

with a large degree of scepticism, because of strong suspicions that the many health scares surrounding the former president were designed either to get him moved from prison to a hospital or to help him win clemency. The 28 men were 500ft underground when the fire broke out. One man was being examined by medical officials for smoke inhalation but the rest of

the men were fine and ''raring to go home and have a sleep'', a Newmont Waihi Gold company spokesman said. They had been working for eight hours of a 10-hour overnight shift when the fire broke out. The spokesman said it was not clear what started the fire: ''The Trio mine is a hardrock gold mine and

there is no risk of a mine explosion,'' adding an investigation would be carried out. Newmont Waihi Gold is owned by Colorado-based Newmont Mining Corporation, a leading global producer of gold. It was New Zealand's worst mining disaster in almost a century.

UK News Suicide or worse? Lewis Edge, also known by the surname Millward, plunged 80 feet into the Mersey River from a footpath of the Silver Jubilee Bridge that links Widnes in Cheshire with Runcorn. He was reported missing from his home last Wednesday evening and his body was spotted by a passer-by at around 8am on Thursday morning. There have been hints that the 13-year-old had been the victim of bullies. His school Wade Deacon Secondary School in Widnes held a meeting of staff concerning Lewis’ death but the school declined to comment. It was unclear whether or not any bullying had taken place at the school but one tribute posted by Charlie Pavitt said: RIP Lewis. Bullies these days are getting worse. No-one should ever lose their life because of other people’s judgements.”

On yer bike - if “Simple incompetence” it’s still there! blamed for death Media City HQ, the BBC’s new 200 million pound complex in Salford, Greater Manchester, has come under fire from staff who fear their bicycles will be stolen due to a “woeful shortfall” in the number of bike racks behind Quay City (Media City). Peel Media Group, who owns and polices the site have warned staff not to chain their bikes to canal railings behind the building saying that they would constitute a fire hazard and would be removed. Staff have complained that all the available secure spaces for bikes are taken up by early arrivals.

Rhian Roberts, head of development for Radio 5 Live and Sports Extra said in a leaked email: “Media City is a different kettle of fish” compared to the BBC’s London headquarters. The building is home to Match of The Day, Children’s Television, Radio 5 Live and BBC Breakfast among others.

Yvonne Fletcher’s No more smoke killer named WPC Fletcher’s killer has been named by a senior adviser to Libya’s Prime Minister. Ashur Shamis, who described it as “mind boggling” that Britain has done so little to pursue the case of the shot fired from the Libyan Embassy in St Jame’s Square, London, in April 1984. He names the shooter as Salah Eddin Khalifa in an interview with the Sunday Telegraph and claims that Khalifa is still alive and living in a north African town since fleeing Libya as the Gaddafi regime collapsed last year. His claims were confirmed to the paper by several sources from the former regime they claim. Ten dissidents, one of whom was Mr Shamis, were also injured during the anti-Gaddafi demonstration that was taking place outside the embassy. Within minutes of the killing, Mr Shamis claims that Mr Khalifa left the embassy by the back door prior to its being surrounded by Metropolitan Police as he did not have diplomatic immunity and could have been detained before leaving the country. It is claimed that he was part of a “revolutionary Committee” of pro-Gaddafi students. However, Britain has rejected his claims of a lack of action saying that the issue was raised every time British and Libyan ministers met. Libyan government

sources said “further significant developments could be announced as early as this week.” Mr Shamis went on to say his contacts in the Gaddafi regime had given him the name of the killer before last year’s revolution and he had since been able to confirm it in government. He said that progress into Yvonne Fletcher’s killing and the injuries sustained by himself and others at the demonstration since the revolution almost a year ago had been slow and accused Britain of dragging its feet for political reasons. “It is time to do something about this. I keep hearing this name again and again,” he said in the interview. Abdulmajid Buik, a member of the commission responsible for removing Gaddafi-era figures from state institutions separately confirmed Khalifa as the killer according to the report. The case of WPC Fletcher remains the only unsolved murder of a serving police officer of the 37 killed over the last 30 years. Mr Mohammed alAlaghi who served as Justice Minister for the first 4 months after Gaddafi’s overthrow claimed that the “British know who killed PC Fletcher but they discussed it with the old regime and came to a compromise which was shameful,” according to The Sunday Telegraph’s report.

G4S games fiasco Athletes arriving to take part in this year’s London Olympic Games are being told to keep out of the main Olympic Park because, with less than two weeks to go before the opening ceremony, the area still resembles a construction site and will not be opened until the 23rd of this month. Troops have been called in for security for the games as private security firm G4S revealed they are unable to provide enough guards for the events. G4S is becoming known for its blunders and on Saturday their Chief Executive apologized for this new fiasco that will cost the firm up to £50

million. Around 5,000 athletes are expected to have taken up residence in the athletes village next to Olympic Park by the end of this week. The park will host hockey, swimming, athletics and cycling among other sports. Some contractors are having to undergo new biometric tests as their passes ran out last Friday but Locog, the London organizing committee, were still insisting that works on the Park were on schedule last weekend. However, venues are finished and athletes training programmes should not be disrupted.

English rocker Jon Lord, who founded Deep Purple and co-wrote their most famous song, Smoke On The Water, has died aged 71. The Leicester-born keyboard player, who had pancreatic cancer, died in London today. A statement on his website said he had passed "from Darkness to Light" adding Lord was "surrounded by his loving family" when he died. Last year, Lord told fans he was "fighting cancer and will therefore be taking a break from performing while getting the treatment and cure". In a message on his website dated August 9, 2011, he added: "I shall of course be continuing to write music - in my world it just has to be part of the therapy - and I fully expect to be back in good shape next year." Lord started playing the piano in his family home and took classical music lessons before turning to jazz and rock 'n' roll.He moved to London at 19 to go to drama school, but was soon playing piano in pubs and bars and in 1964 joined cult blues band the Artwoods - formed by Ronnie Wood's brother Art. He then went on tour with The Flowerpot Men. The heavy rockers sold more than 100 million albums - many featuring Lord's classically inspired keyboards. But their most famous song was the simple Smoke On The Water with its trademark riff. The band split in 1976 and Lord joined bandmate Ian Paice in Paice Ashton Lord before playing with Whitesnake and a reformed Deep Purple.

Snails anyone? What do you get when the weather’s been as wet as it has in the UK? Snails! Thousands of them actually. But the village of Thruxton in Hampshire are extending entries to the flower and produce show by adding the new categories of “largest snail” and “heaviest snail”. Organiser John Davies said: “because everywhere is so wet, everybody’s gardens are full of snails”. However, they will be kept well away from other categories such as “biggest marrow” and “longest runner bean”.

Bodies found The bodies of 12-yearold Sam, 8-year-old Rebecca and 7-year-old Charlotte Fuller who had been stabbed to death, were found on Monday of this week at the bottom of an old quarry at Poles Coppice, Pontesbury, near Shrewsbury with the body of their father Ceri Fuller, 35, being found at the bottom of an 80ft cliff. He had apparently killed himself after taking the lives of the children and it is thought that the bodies may have lain there for days. His 34-year-old wife, Ruth Fuller, said in a statement that she had no words to describe the tragic circumstances surrounding the deaths of her family a day after their bodies were discovered. It has emerged that Mrs Fuller, and artist, recently wrote on Facebook that her "midlife crisis" was over with only a "few completely bonkers things done. Still, very glad of the urge to reach out to people, loved that.", although she has declined to shed any light on what she meant or what she thinks may have caused

her husband to kill himself and the children. She was also seen by neighbours looking anxious and "pacing up and down the road" as if she was waiting for someone. A knife, believed to be the murder weapon was found at the scene and the area is remaining sealed off by West Mercia Police while further investigation and forensic examination of the area are carried out. Post mortem examinations were conducted yesterday, Tuesday, but at time of going to press results had not been released. Several witnesses have come forward with "helpful information", which detectives will now use to track the vehicle's movements. Several bouquets of flowers have been left outside the family's home, in which they moved into in June last year, expressing sympathy at the loss and Crime Scene Investigators attended the property from Tuesday morning to carry out further tests.

EWS IN BRIEF

UK

12,000 die a year In a report by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine it has been revealed that there are around 12,000 hospital deaths a year in the UK as a result of poor patient care by medical staff. Researchers concluded that medical staff committed “basic errors” in more than one in ten cases overall in which a patient died. The study, one of the most comprehensive ever undertaken on the subject, found that the deaths were preventable concluding that hospital staff made the wrong diagnosis or used wrong drugs, failed to monitor patients vital signs including pulse, blood pressure and kidney functions adequately or simply failed to react when the patient’s condition deteriorated. The study found that something went wrong with the care of 13% of patients who died in hospital and an error led to the death of 5.2% of these cases amounting to 1,000 deaths a month. It found that errors and omissions were more frequent than active mistakes.

An Englishman in Andalucia’s mines He developed such a deep relationship with the country that he became a chronicler of 19th-century Andalusia - and one of the world's first travel authors with his works “Untrodden Spain and her Black Country”, published in two volumes in London in 1875, and the two-volume “Among the Spanish People”, which appeared two years later. Rose's experiences have now been translated into Spanish for the first time (by Victoria León Varela) under the title “Viaje a la Andalucía inexplorada. The work covers only a part of the four years Rose spent in Andalusia, focusing in particular on his stay in the mining

After landing in Málaga in September 1873, Rose (1841-1878) explored the in-depth reality surrounding his work. He described the mines and surrounding areas in great detail, including all the processes associated with lead production and their effects on the environment, as well as matters relating to the character of the Spanish miners, the high mortality rate, workers' salaries, religion, leisure time, diet and popular events, such as Carnival and Easter.

Decisive battle re-enacted Some 300 people divided into two camps – Moors and Christians – re-enacted the Battle of Navas de Tolosa, in Carolina, Jaen province, on Monday.

“We’re going to lose, but that’s life”, said Agrimiro Saiz, president of the Cultural Association of Medieval History in Cuenca, who was playing the part of a Moorish general. He has been participating in similar reenactments in different parts of the country for years but said he had never seen so many people turn up for such an event. “It jut goes to show how important the battle was for Spain,” Saiz said.

Tradesmen Woman shot at fair ground want street awnings The owners of stores in the streets of San Miguel, Peligro, Cuesta del Tajo, María Barrabino and Doctores Ubaldo Delgado in the centre of Torremolinas have asked the local council to put up awnings because high temperatures are affecting sales. “The heat becomes unbearable at certain hours and it makes people just too lethargic to go out shopping,” one shop owner in San Miguel Street told a local newspaper. “We have to take into account the fact that it’s in the summer when there are more sales, and putting awnings over the streets would encourage that trend.” However, some shop owners take a gloomier view. For the, awnings won’t make any difference because it’s the economic situation that is keeping sales down, not the heat.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Two bloody anniversaries

What would the Socialists do?

O

T

n July 18th, 1936, the military rose up to start a civil war that was supposed to save Spain from Communism and chaos, which ended in a dictatorship that extended the phenomenon of “the two Spains” until Francisco Franco’s death in November 1975. Many people understand the two Spains as the existence of an extremely idle, very wealthy ruling class and the Church on the one hand, and the hideously poor working class and land labourers on the other. In the middle, however, there was a small class of open, tolerant, forwardlooking, cosmopolitan, intellectual and progressive Spaniards who longed to modernise Spain and drag her into the 20th century. That was the situation at the start of the civil war, which killed or drove into exile the progressive elements. Meanwhile, the rich continued to be very conservative, very Catholic, very inward looking and nationalistic well into the late 1950s, ignoring the hideously poor as they had for centuries. However, the surviving intellectuals and progressive thinkers began to creep out of the woodwork, very tentatively but very determinedly.

T

hen Franco died and King Juan Carlos led the country through a transition period fraught with danger from both Left and Right. However, the Communists toed the line, the Anarchists had all but disappeared, and the democratic elements in the armed forces soon outweighed – and outlived – Franco’s old cronies. Felipe Gonzalez was elected the country’s first Socialist prime minister since before the civil war and implemented the social reforms that brought Spain well and truly into the 20th century. The conservative Partido Popular won the 1996 election and let Gonzalez’s reforms stand, while introducing a few of their own.

N

ow we have a situation where the Left seems to be heading for the same sort of rampage that brought on the civil war all those years ago. The Communist-dominated Izquierda Unida (United Left, which has lately taken to calling itself the Plural Left) wants to eliminate the monarchy and bring in the Third Republic, and seems to be dragging the more left-wing elements in the Socialist Party along with them. They’re completely ignoring the fact that Spain is in the throes of the worst economic crisis since the 1930s and that it was a dictator and a king who have given the country the longest period of political stability in its whole history. Will they never learn? However, the good news is that the tide of history seems

to have turned against such political recklessness. Ideology dominated before, but Economics rules these days. The country may have a bumpy ride ahead, but it will be a much less bloody one.

The other anniversary

iguel Angel Blanco, a councillor for the Partido Popular in the town of Ermua in the Vizcaya province of the Basque Country, was kidnapped on July 10th, 1997, by ETA and cold-bloodedly executed two days later. The Basque terrorist group had demanded that all ETA prisoners held in jails elsewhere in Spain were to be relocated to the Basque country within 48 hours or Blanco would be executed. There were huge demonstrations throughout the country demanding his release. Even King Juan Carlos spoke out against the kidnapping - but to no avail. On July 12th, just 90 minutes after the ETA ultimatum expired, Blanco was made to kneel, with his hands tied behind his back, while the terrorist known as Txapote fired two bullets into the back of his head. His girlfriend, Amaia, was waiting at the wheel of the getaway car. Meanwhile, another member of the group rang the police to tell them where to find his body. In fact, the bullets hadn't killed Miguel Angel. He was rushed to hospital but died 12 hours later. The pair were finally caught and tried for Blanco’s murder, only one of several they’d committed. During their trial five years ago, they pretended not to understand Spanish, refused to stand up when spoken to by the judge and behaved like a couple of irresponsible adolescents throughout. When Blanco’s mother told the court about the pain she will live with for the rest of her life, they pretended not to listen. Just before the hearing ended, Txapote finally found his tongue in Spanish long enough to stand up and yell: "We are ETA militants and we shall never stop fighting". They have since married in jail and have two children. Remembering the anguish Blanco’s family went through and are still going through on the 15th anniversary of his death last week, all I wanted to do was get my hands on that "vile garrotte" - an iron ring with a big screw at the back which is placed around the condemned man's neck and the screw is tightened until the neck snaps. And for this lovely pair, I'd tighten the screw very, very slowly.

he fast pace of news events of the past week doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Last week’s column had already hit the newsstands just hours before the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced that it would indeed raise VAT from 18 per cent to 21 per cent and introduce a host of other budgetsaving measures that it will reduce spending by €65 billion in what is being billed as the biggest austerity package in the history of Spanish democracy. Besides the VAT hike, the most controversial plan is to cut public employees’ extra Christmas pay bonus this year and reduce the number of free days they are entitled to annually. The reaction has been harrowing. Since the announcements were made last Wednesday, thousands of workers and their supporters have taken to the streets in “spontaneous” protests, cutting major thoroughfares in Madrid and battling with riot police in the city’s main square where they were buoyed by the miners from León, Asturias and other mining regions. They had just ended their 400-kilometre “black march” to the Spanish capital where they were also protesting cuts to government subsidies to their sector.

T

he violence was some of the worst we have seen in recent months. Bloodied faces of protesters bemoaning the situation in front of television cameras and images of Darth Vader-looking officers pinning down teen-agers and the elderly on sidewalks and streets muddied the nightly news broadcasts. But the most provocative scene - and one that hadn’t been seen in many years - was the hundreds of people who appeared on Saturday at the Partido Popular (PP) headquarters screaming “resignation, resignation.” It was the first of what is expected to be more inflamed calls by angry citizens for Rajoy to step down.

I

f the Socialists were still in power would they take the same painful moves to appease Brussels as Rajoy has done? The answer would have to be yes, but those cuts and measures would be severely adjusted to spread them around to ensure that everyone and every sector will have to make sacrifices. The Socialists have long been demanding that the wealth tax the Zapatero government introduced last year be tightened to include not only the super rich but also upper middle class families who have escaped paying taxes through a series of loopholes in the tax code. Socialist leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba has called on the government to act in the same manner as French President François

Hollande in introducing higher taxes for France’s wealthy families. Instead, Rajoy has come up with a weak alternative by allowing those who have cash stashed away in offshore accounts and tax-haven jurisdictions to settle their finances with treasury in exchange for paying a penalty amounting to 10 per cent of the money they repatriate. Since the amnesty went into effect at the beginning of June, none of the country’s greatest fortunes have come forward. In fact, many have hired lawyers and financial consultants to complain to the government that the amnesty plan is flawed with no guarantees that their clients won’t be prosecuted in the future. This has forced the government to tweak the regulation to give the rich the benefit of declaring the 10 per cent penalty on assets they put away abroad from just the past five years. They can bring in all the money they stashed away for decades but would only have to declare deposits from the past five years. Still, no magnate is biting.

T

he Socialists would have also ensured that public servants are treated more fairly. They may have cut extra days’ pay - which has been the case in Portugal, although the decision has been ruled unfair by that country’s Constitutional Court - but they would have ensured that severe cuts would also be made in the salaries of the prime minister, Cabinet officials and top government appointees. Along these lines, bills would no doubt have also been presented in Parliament setting new austere annual allotments to the royal family and calling for changes to the law to begin taxing the Catholic Church on properties from which it derives income. This might not appease unhappy workers much but it would demonstrate the ruling party’s good faith, and could be used to convince angry Spaniards that everyone is carrying the burden for this country’s lavish living of the past 15 years.

T

he Socialists no doubt would have forged a stronger alliance with France in battling the super nonconforming position of Germany’s Angela Merkel. But even Rajoy has been keen enough to tread on the perilous territorial waters of Europe’s conservatives to side with the Socialist Hollande in demanding more growth and less austerity. It is still very unclear where all the PP government’s proposals and cutbacks are going to take us. What is disconcerting is that the social fabric of this nation continues to unravel as the risk of an eventual political implosion increases each day.

CONVENT OPEN DAY Two new awards His Excellency The Governor, Sir Adrian Johns, has made two additional awards of the Gibraltar Award (Governor's Certificate and Badge of Honour) in recognition of exceptional services in support of the recent Royal Visit to Gibraltar. Awards are made to:

Lady Johns has thanked the Gibraltar community for the generous support that they had given to the Convent Open Day. Over 1200 people attended the Convent last Saturday, 7 July, and the event raised over £9000 for the Gibraltar Diamond Jubilee Trust Fund. Lady Johns also held a ceremony at the Convent yesterday to draw the winning raffle tickets and present prizes to the winners of the various children’s competitions.

The winners of the children’s competitions (pictured above with their families) were: Painting Competition – Katie Elizabeth Orciel

The final question in the quiz was “What would you have in your dream garden?” The answers on the two winning entries were “Pool, Flower and an animal shelter” (Eva) and “Water feature and fish” (Stephen). Lady Johns said “I’d like to congratulate the winners of our various competitions. I’d also like to thank everyone who supported this event: those who provided sponsorship, those who helped with the organisation or on the day itself and, of course, those

who turned up to enjoy the event. We said a year ago that we wanted to do something really special for the Diamond Jubilee, and we’re pleased to have achieved that – and to have raised so much for the Gibraltar Diamond Jubilee Trust Fund. A lot goes into a day like this – we’ve already started planning for next year!” In the course of supporting a worthy cause and having a good time, those attending the Convent Open Day consumed 500 scones and a selection of cakes and purchased the entire 2012 stock of Convent Garden Orange Marmalade!

Police Inspector Ian Eugene Howes. For services to security and protection during the Royal Visit to Gibraltar. He has been a police officer for nearly 27 years. The Governor said “Following closely on from the HM the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, I am delighted to be able to make, extraordinarily, these additional awards in immediate recognition of two individuals who made

outstanding personal contributions but also reflect the enormous amount of enthusiasm and hard work that went in across the board to making the Royal Visit such a success”.

Keen downhill cyclist Lloyd Thornton age 14 from Las Vinas high school has claimed yet another Gold trophy at the Open de Andalucia de Descenso 2012 Arriate, Rhonda. After a hard practice on the Saturday in unbearable heat he still managed to claim 1st place on the podium. His next race in Sierra Navada will be his

next challenge. Lloyd is the big brother of the 8-year-old we had an article about in The News recently who rode his bike to raise funds for the Donkey Breeding Sanctuary near his home. Mum Mandy is a lucky lady indeed. What a great family with kids to be proud of! And good luck to Lloyd in the Sierras.

EU citizens of pensionable age officially living in Spain are entitled to the same medical treatment and care as would be afforded to any Spanish pensioner and vice versa. By the same factor the recent changes to the Spanish health care system will affect both British and other EU pensioners registered as living here in Spain. The new rules mean that all pensioners will now make a percentage contribution towards the costs of prescriptions and any other chargeable health care procedures or services just the same as their Spanish counterparts. Could it be a medical problem? One of the first steps to determining why a cat urinates or defecates on our carpet or bed is to determine whether there is a medical problem. Your pet's doctor can perform a good physical exam and laboratory tests to diagnose diseases that cause our cats to eliminate outside the litter box, such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, feline lower urinary tract disease, cancer, neurological disease, intestinal parasites or constipation. Age-related diseases, such as arthritis or impaired cognitive functions, can also influence our cat's ability to get to the litter box in time. Could it be the litter or the litter box? Sometimes cats will urinate or defecate outside of the box simply because the box, the litter or the location of the box is not

acceptable to them. The box may have an offensive odour because it was cleaned with a harsh chemical. Or, if the box is not cleaned often, the box may smell of urine. (It's recommended that you have two litter boxes for one cat, three boxes for two cats, etc. and clean them daily). Often cats find the texture of some litter distasteful and have a preference for fine or coarse litter, clumping or non-clumping litter. While scented litter appeals to us, many cats find the perfume unsavoury. Also, the location of the box can play a role. For example, the box may be in a hightraffic, noisy, dark or dank area. Or your cat is afraid to use the box because she was terrorised while she was in the box or ambushed as she tried to exit the box (thus, don't capture your cat to give medications while in the litter box).

Costa icon Sidney Matthews dead at 105 At 105 years our beloved bridge director, Sidney Matthews has left us. He came from Boston, USA. What a guy!! He hosted all the main bridge events for over 85 years, including cruises for bridge club members. He had it all, a wonderful man, every player would agree. Sidney kept going until he was 100 years old running three bridge games a week. He is somewhat of a legend playing until his

death at Sanyres in Puerto Banus and teaching others over 90 years of age to play. At 105 years old he was a real trouper the likes of which we will not know again. A true ambassador for the game of bridge and golf, a real gentleman. Rest in Peace. Memorial to be held at a later date at the bridge club - where else? written by Jesse Brooks

PAD summer lunch raises much needed funds On a scorching mid-June Saturday, around forty members and friends of Pad gathered at "CASA DANESA" for a summer treat. The cool, shady, terrace was a welcome relief from the ever rising temperatures outside and a delicious buffet lunch and drinks were enjoyed by all. Entertainment was provided by the very popular "Tapas Choir" with lively numbers involving much foot tapping and "sing-a-long" with a very professional and enthusiastic group. With the addition of a raffle plus mini auction a much needed €360 was raised for Pad funds.

PAD would like to express their grateful thanks go to the Tapas Choir (services given free) and to donors of raffle prizes from Clinica Veterinaria on Torreblanca, Suzanne's Beauty Spot, Besol Hair Salon and naturally the charming staff at "Casa Danesa" who also donated a free lunch. Yum Yum! Thank you also to all PAD members who donated individual prizes and to Lisa Emeny (President) and Mags Luffingham (Vice President) of Pad, who masterminded a most enjoyable event. They say they are all looking forward to the next time!

If a loved one died in Spain, would you know what to do? Ask yourself these questions: Who would you call? Do you know the Spanish system? Would you be able to deal with the Spanish Law and Customs? Would family members have time to attend the funeral, which is usually held within 48 hours? Upfront payment is usually required in the region of €4000, would this amount be readily available? Could you cope with these issues at an emotional and stressful time?

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

e Dark Knight Rises Director: Christopher Nolan Starring: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine Well, here it is. The eagerly awaited finale in the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy – as bleak and dark as ever, and destined to set the box offices tills ringing. The series began in 2005 with a visually stunning Batman Begins. Then the late Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his remarkable performance as The Joker in the The Dark Knight. So the question is, can Nolan cap off the series and go out on a high. With almost universally supportive reviews it looks

like the answer is yes and this will be the summer blockbuster to beat. It’s been eight years since Batman slunk off into the shadows as a fugitive, shouldering the blame for The Joker’s antics and the evil doings of DA Harvey Dent’s Two face at the behest of Commissioner Gordon (the ever reliable Oldman) to help push through punitive crime laws. Since then Gotham has been lawful, and Bruce Wayne, Batman’s alter ego (the ever brooding Bale) has

been living the life of a recluse in luxury, bereft of his bat toys. But it is now time for Batman to step out of the shadows as Gotham faces a new threat in the shape of the masked terrorist Bane (Hardy) who plans to destroy the city and its citizens in a nuclear attack. On the fringes lurks Selina Kyle aka Catwoman (a fabulous performance from Anne Hathaway). As the forces of evil line up against him Batman can once again call on the

support of faithful butler Alfred (Caine) and the genius Lucius Fox (Freeman), as well as Gordon and the idealistic young policeman John Blake (Joseph Gordon Levitt) . Tom Hardy plays Bane with a mask for 99.9 per cent of the time but turns in an electrifying physical and vocal performance. Nolan was determined to produce a big, bold finale – and with the critics pretty universal in their applause, it looks like he has succeeded.

Gettysburg (Ridley Scott)

Bel Ami

Release date: 23rd July, 2012

Ridley Scott brings the bloodiest battle in US history to life as you've never seen it before. A brand-new, feature length special, Gettysburg will strip away the romanticised veneer of the Civil War and present the engagement in a new light: a visceral, terrifying experience with everything on the line. At its core, this is the story of the soldiers on the ground, not the generals who commanded from behind the frontlines. The epic battle of Gettysburg, fought over a three-day period at the beginning of July 1863, was bloody, brutal, and bitter. Compelling CGI and

powerful action footage place viewers in the midst of the fighting, delivering both an emotional cinematic experience and an information packed look at the turning points, technology, and little known facts of perhaps America's greatest battle.

Bel Ami is the story of Georges Duroy ( Pattinson), who travels from cockroach ridden garrets to opulent salons, using his wits and powers of seduction to rise from poverty to wealth, from a prostitute's embrace to passionate trysts with wealthy beauties, in a world where politics and media jostle for influence, where sex is power and celebrity an obsession. Georges is not an easy character to play, he's shallow, empty and heartless and will stop at

Over the years I have watched many episodes of “The Simpsons” and the more I see, the more I dislike them. I know they are only cartoon characters, but they are really bad people: Marge has been locked up (that says it all), Homer is lazy and stupid, Bart needs disciplining, Lisa is a littleknow-it all and Maggie shot Mr. Burns.

I won´t even begin to tear apart “The Simpsons Movie”, it was beyond bad and only verified the fact the Homer is a total fart. “Family Guy” on the other hand, is far superior. This week you are either taking some time to improve your home or dwelling and also tending to matters of the heart. These are ideal trends to make up for lost time in terms of going the extra mile for your partner or for someone in your family. Spontaneous short trips are also in your vista where you may either travel to connect with loved ones or have a surprise visitor yourself. The key is to live simply, yet fully. Some ideas and creative plans that were set in motion you may have second thoughts about and wish to pull back the reigns for a little review. At this point there is not a lack but a surplus of things you wish to express and experience as your lust for life is at a peak right now. There are floods of feelings and emotions running through you and it could be that love is in the air. Take your time, remain patient but keep alert. All around you there is chaos and confusion and it is up to you to be still amidst the turmoil. There are some close to you that are pretending, but nobody really knows what is going on, that is no-one except you. It takes certain events to pull us back to the present moment and you are being called to take the high road by using the strength of your will to be free of the old repeating emotional weights. Others will be drawn and attracted to you – it is time for some fun by weekend When your heart is full, everything is right in the world. Some old friends will help get yourself back on track, reminding you of your passion and place in the world. The next three weeks are about recovering that inner spark. You are at a very vulnerable position at the moment as your intentions may be pure, but that doesn't guarantee the end results will be the same, make sure you check your facts and figures so that you get the best chance of personal success. Your mind has been on overdrive as there is something happening in your life that you do not have control over, it is wild with opportunity but it needs to take its natural course. You may very well find yourself in the next three weeks lost in that fantasy land of your hopes and dreams. It is fine if you get lost there, for now, as long as you do not worry yourself sick about the what if’s. Others can sense the fun within you and social invites come flooding in.

You could feel some insecurity and some hard tugs in your family life but truths are coming out and as is always true, the truths will not only set you free, they will lead the way. A piece of your history reconnects in a new way with enlightening results. Pay attention to the details; handle your September 23rd - responsibilities and obligations straight away as they occur. Family members October 22nd may need your attention and may seek your advice.

LIBRA

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

You are on the path of deepening your connections, utilising that primal desire to relate with a greater intensity. Trust where this road is now leading you, closer and deeper, it is the kind that may very well end up in marriage or a long term commitment. You'll find most people will feel drawn and attracted to you at this time because of your inner calmness. Do not be tempted to patch problems up but get things fixed right the first time so they won't reappear again.

SAGITTARIUS There are some hard talks and intense exchanges to be had this week. If things have been swept under the carpet it is time to reveal them so they can be sorted once and for all. You are locked into the material areas of life so use this time to sort any financial worries out and plan for the future, trust your November 22nd - instincts. By the weekend friends and family gather and there is a good time st December 21 to be had by all, a social period looms.

CAPRICORN It is all about giving and taking at the moment and another may need your help and attention. There can be a tendency at times to focus on all that needs to be improved versus starting with the mind set of all that is working well and right. Move into your talks and exchanges with your heart’s memory of December 22nd - all that brought you together in the first place so it diffuses any resentment January 19th or regret. Others will find it hard to say ‘no’ to you this week.

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

You are not one who generally lives in the past, but there are times when going back and tending to matters of the heart in a conscious and meaningful way can be of enormous benefit. Get whatever you need off your chest and clear the air. Others are crying out for successful positive actions and not just empty words and promises so take the lead and become the pioneer you were destined to be. Do not cut corners this week – pay attention to the detail.

Solo - Only Again today we are looking at words which have a number of meanings and the simplest ways of translating them into Spanish. Recently in class someone asked how to say "only" Well, of course, I had to reply - Depende. No, depende does not mean only. I was saying that it depends. It depends on what "only" you want to say. As fluent English speakers, we often don't realise how complex the English language is. Believe me, Spanish people are struggling just as much with English irregular verbs and rules which, in English we have so many exceptions that it makes one wonder if learning the rule makes any sense at all, as we are with all aspects of the Spanish language. So, only can be translated by solo. Solo tengo tres euros, I only have three euros. Hay solo una manzana, There-s only one apple But solo also means alone Un café solo, is a black coffee But very strong. If you want a slightly weaker black coffee, ask for café Americano. Un whisky solo ( Remember it’s usually pronounced whikie) Straight whisky. Único also means only He’s an only son Es hijo único, An only daughter Hija única No Más que literally means no more than ie you’ve only got to ask for it No tienes más que pedirlo, I only touched it No hice más que tocarlo As we have seen before in this column If only is Ojalá

Something with another may have kicked in and gone too far too fast or developed prematurely and you are circling back and taking two steps back.. You may be working through some rough inner patches and licking a wound or two. Often times we cannot understand when we are in the middle of something why it is occurring, but the why’s do show up after the storm and the truth, always rises to the surface. A certain sort of love is making its way back to you.

As the emotions flood in, you find a way, based on survival, to step away from their hold and observe the turbulent wave as if you are watching the rush on a movie screen. You know now that the only way through and down a key emotional course is to take a practical approach. Events are moving forward to break you free from any fantasy-land illusions you may be clinging to. This energy is totally dedicated to making sure you end up on the right path. Expect the unexpected.

In answer to any question where you wish the answer were yes. ¿Tienes un coche nuevo? Ojalá Have you got a new car. If only ¿Vas de vacaciones este verano? More TV means bigger waist Children who increase the number of hours of weekly television they watch between the ages of two and four years old risk larger waistlines by age 10, according to researchers at the University of Montreal. After tracking the TV habits of 1,314 children they found that every extra weekly hour watched could add half a millimetre to their waist circumference and reduce muscle fitness. When they started the study, the average amount of television watched by the children was 8.8 hours a week. This increased on average by six hours over the next two years to reach 14.8 hours a week by the age of four-and-a-half. Fifteen per cent of the children in the study were watching more than 18 hours per week by that age, according to their parents. The researchers said the effect of 18 hours of television at 4.5 years of age would by the age of 10 result in an extra 7.6mm of waist because of the child's TV habit. As well as measuring waist circumference, the

researchers also carried out a standing long jump test to measure each child's muscular fitness and athletic ability. An extra weekly hour of TV can decrease the distance a child is able to jump from standing by 0.36cm, the researchers said. They said further research was needed to work out whether television watching is directly responsible for the health issues they observed. However, they added that their study was a warning about the factors which could lead to childhood obesity. They said: "The bottom line is that watching too much television - beyond the recommended amounts is not good." The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children aged over two should not watch more than two hours of television per day. The researchers said that habits and behaviours became entrenched during childhood and these habits might affect attitudes to sporting activities in adult life.

‘Healthy’ habits debunked lSee your dentist twice a year This advice originally came from an old toothpaste ad. There was no science behind it, and there still isn't. A 2003 review looked at 29 studies and found no conclusive evidence supporting a need to go every six months. If your teeth and gums are healthy, once a year is enough to catch any developing problems, the experts say. But don't wait longer than that: A study presented at the American Heart Association meeting last year found that having your teeth cleaned by a professional once a year lowers your risk of heart attack by 24 per cent and stroke by 13 per cent. lDon’t eat after 8 pm Calories can't tell time. There's no difference between the 6:30 a.m. and 8:20 p.m. as far as they are concerned and in fact, a spokesman for the UCLA Centre for Human Nutrition recently said that research has shown you should have a small snack directly before going to sleep if you exercise at night, or if you're over 60 years old. A protein-packed

meal--or even a whey protein shake--provides more fuel for your body to synthesize muscle. It also helps combat the effects of age-related muscle loss. lThrow away milk on expiration date The date on the carton is just the date after which it can't be sold. The milk probably has another week of freshness. Give it a sniff and proceed. And if you drink sour milk, there'll be a flavour problem but you don't need to have your stomach pumped. There's another word for curdled milk: cheese. lFeed a cold

There's no science behind this old adage, according to scientists at the epidemiology and virology department at the University of Virginia. They said: "Drink lots of fluids, but eat whatever you feel like." That said, the cysteine in chicken soup has been proven to relieve mucus build-up and sore throat. lStarve a fever Wrong again, the same scientists said. A high temperature boosts your

'No truth' to lying eyes theory Research by academics two Universities, Edinburgh University and Hertfordshire University, led them to conclude that the common belief of lying eyes is a myth.

Many psychologists think when a person looks up to their right they are likely to be telling a lie and glancing up to the left is said to indicate honesty. But the academics carried out tests and found the theory to be wrong. The claimed link between eye movements and truth telling is a key element of neurolinguistic programming (NLP), a method of enhancing people's lives using psychological techniques. According to

lA hard toothbrush cleans teeth better A soft one cleans just as well and causes less damage to teeth and gums. Also, the experts say that one really good brushing every 24 hours is better than two half-baked

attempts because plaque takes 24 hours to harden. But spend at least two minutes on the job, preferably before going to bed. Saliva combats plaque, and its production decreases when you sleep. However, your breath is still going to reek in the morning, so be a good coworker/friend/close talker and either brush or use mouthwash when you wake up.

Sylvester Stallone's son dies at the age of 36 and is said to be “grief stricken” at the sudden loss

Stallone’s son Sage found dead … but the cause of death could take weeks to confirm following tests. There were no signs of foul play or trauma in the death of Sage Stallone, whose sudden passing at the age of 36 left his father Sylvester Stallone devastated, a publicist and investigators said. Sage Stallone was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home Friday by an employee and a relative, before police arrived and confirmed he was dead. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said. "Sylvester Stallone is devastated and grief-stricken over the sudden loss of his son," publicist Michelle Bega said in a statement. "His compassion and thoughts are with Sage's mother, Sasha." The cause of death was not clear. No suicide note was found, Winter said,

though prescription bottles were recovered from the home on Mulholland Drive in the Studio City area. Winter could not say what kind of medication bottles or how many, and whether they had a role in the death. Mr Winter said an autopsy will be performed in the next few days and investigators will look into Stallone's medical history, but a cause of death was likely to take several weeks while toxicology tests are performed. George Braunstein, an attorney who has represented Sage Stallone for 15 years, said friends and acquaintances had become concerned because they hadn't heard from Stallone in the past day, Braunstein said. He said the employee who

Lady GAGA bares (nearly) all for new perfume Ad We're used to seeing Lady Gaga in some pretty outrageous clothes but she's ditched the crazy clobber altogether in the photo used to promote her new perfume, Fame. The arty black and white pic - snapped by legendary fashion photographer Steven Klein - sees a naked Gaga reclining as an army of semi-naked mini muscle men clamber all over her body. In typical Gaga fashion,

the scent itself is also groundbreaking - it's a black liquid that sprays clear. The singer - who is currently in the middle of her Born This Way Ball world tour - said she was nervous about unveiling the art work. "I won’t lie I’m a bit nervous," she tweeted. "It’s been a while since I’ve shared some work with you. But i’m so proud of Steven+I, we really did not sleep!"

convention or had returned to Los Angeles Friday. Sage Moonblood Stallone was the oldest of Sylvester Stallone's children and co-starred with his father in two films. He was the first of two sons Stallone had with first wife Sasha Czack.

Actor Charlie Sheen is donating one per cent of his Anger Management pay packet to America's military. The star has shown off his soft side in recent months, completing a charity race in Illinois and auctioning off a set visit to

raise funds for underprivileged girls, and now Sheen has promised to hand over £625,000 to bosses at the United Service Organization as well as a portion of his new TV sitcom salary to help uniformed men and women and their families.

France's far-right to sue Madonna over swastika video France's far-right National Front said Sunday it plans to sue Madonna over a video at the US pop star's concert in France showing party leader Marine Le Pen with a swastika on her forehead. "We cannot accept such an odious comparison," National Front vice-president Florian Philippot said, adding that the legal action would be filed this week. The video, which served as a backdrop for Madonna's performance of the song "Nobody Knows Me", flashed a picture of Le Pen's forehead superimposed with a swastika, followed by an image resembling Nazi

leader Adolf Hitler. There was an audible gasp from the audience at the Stade de France on Saturday when the image of Le Pen appeared briefly on a giant screen in a video clip which also showed Madonna's face merging with a number of public figures including Pope Benedict XVI and toppled Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. "Projecting such an image of Marine Le Pen with a swastika implies that she is a Nazi," National Front lawyer Wallerand de Saint-Just told AFP, adding that the civil complaint for insult would be lodged with a court this week.

“THE NEWS”WANTS TO HEAR YOUR VIEWS Send letters to the editor as part of an e-mail text to editorial@thenewsonline.es

G. Robertson Dear Ms Thomas (Movie Spotlight), I have read your reply to my letter published recently in `The News` and yes, I am aware you are `just giving your opinion, and there will always be differing likes and dislikes according to taste.` However I feel strongly that a public critique should be written in a more responsible fashion. It was quite obvious neither of these films was to your taste and your opinion appeared in print to be supercilious and disdainful of these films, to the point of contempt. Surely a more responsible review would have emphasised this was strictly your personal view yet encourage people to see the films and make their own minds up - not condemn them wholeheartedly and actively DIScourage viewing. Such harsh criticism as yours would be better reserved for some of the violence and horror frequently seen on screen and likely to turn the minds of impressionable people, for instance in the recent tragic case of the young woman in UK blinded by her violent and aggressive partner who, it was reported had watched a film on TV just the night before, illustrating eye gouging and then ruined her life during a domestic incident, for no other reason

by email than being `inspired` by watching such horrific violence on screen! Many of us will also remember the tragic case of baby Jamie Bulger murdered by youngsters `fed` on a diet of violent films. You requested I should recommend a film for you to review in your column. I have recently seen several films, all very different but all of which I thoroughly enjoyed and none of which could be regarded as anything but harmless and enjoyable entertainment; namely - `The Help`; `The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel`; `Warhorse`; `The Iron Lady` and finally `Salmon Fishing in the Yemen`; any of which I would be more than happy to watch again, and probably again, and further would highly recommend!! I look forward to reading more of your reviews, hopefully less biased and more likely to raise positive interest in your readers.

Editor says: Amy Thomas has strong views on a lot of subject and in particular her likes and dislikes of certain films – she is, after all our movie critic so she’s doing her job! Unfortunately, horror films and the like make a lot of money from people who enjoy watching them so they are not going to go away.

Jack Griggs, Hon. Secretary Further to the Peter Woodall item on page 15 of the Costa del Sol edition issue 182, (last

Let’s not forget as well that Charles Manson was apparently inspired to do what he did after listening to the Beatles “white album”. Should we also start banning music then? I think some perspective is needed. I too used to watch a lot of horror movies but I don’t go round hacking people’s heads off and, in fact, don’t enjoy them any more so don’t watch them. I do however enjoy action movies but I’m not about to go jumping off buildings or from burning trucks either. There will always be total lunatics walking around our streets whatever they do and do not watch. On another note, I too enjoyed “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” but let’s not forget that the film implies that you can just go there on holiday, stay there and get a job and no visa needed. Let’s hope nobody has sold up everything and gone to India hoping to live the dream life in retirement over there without making proper enquiries! “Warhorse” too was a fabulous film but very much full of the violence of war. Amy Thomas reviewed Warhorse recently (March 21st issue that’s still available in our online versions – www.thenewsonline.es), but it sounds like you missed the review. Both were inspiring films but they were just that, films to watch and enjoy, not real life.

RAFA Benalmadena

week) your readers may be interested to note that the Royal Air Forces Association Benalmadena Branch is also a source of possible assistance for ex-RAF cases here on the Costa del Sol, and has been for over 10 years. We have a team of qualified and experienced and very hard working Welfare Officers. Here on the Costa del Sol, the Benalmádena Branch 1357, which was formed from the Costa del Sol Branch in 2002, covers an area from Estepona in the West, to East Malaga, and about 80km inland. The Welfare Team are involved in many cases where ex-RAF or their dependents require help ranging from medical or care help, repatriation, or simply the use of our disability aids. We arrange home help and care and provide the essential link to the RAF Benevolent Fund and Social

Services, in UK and in Spain. Recently we have been receiving 2 to 4 new cases every month all of which have to be assessed and processed. Over the 4 years to December 2011, this branch alone has distributed over €237,000 in welfare aid. In 2011 we dispersed over €51,000 to needy cases, made over 70 Welfare Visits and involving travel of over 3100km. The Branch is registered in Spain to ensure the correct and legal distribution of monies received from the UK, and that collected here under the banner of "Wings" collections. Further details and contact points can be found at www.rafabenalmadena.co.uk You will also see on our events page that we are about to celebrate our 10th Anniversary.

Who has a Moon? I was watching ‘Who Wants to Be A Millionaire’ on TV last week and a question popped up. ‘Which planet has no Moons?’ A) The Earth. B) Venus. C) Jupiter. D) Saturn.

N

ow I thought that was quite easy and that surely he would know the answer but even after he had phoned a friend the poor guy still didn’t know the answer and had to take the money, final answer. So if you ever find yourself on a quiz show chasing a million pounds this might help.

T

he definition of a Moon is a body that is orbiting around another larger body. Technically they should be called satellites but since the launch of Sputnik in 1957 the name has come to mean man-made objects in orbit around the Earth, to purists I suppose that these should be called artificial satellites as opposed to natural satellites.

M

I

J

t was always believed that there was only one Moon in the Solar System- our own Moon- but in 1610 Galileo turned the very first telescope toward Jupiter and discovered 4 tiny points of light circling around the planet. These 4 moons are called Ganymede, Callisto, Europa and Io and are collectively known as the Galilean Moons. These were the first Moons to be discovered and with their help the idea that the Sun and everything else circled the stationary Earth was eventually disproved.

N

ot long after, in 1655, a Dutch astronomer named Christian Huygens discovered a Moon orbiting around Saturn but it was not until 1847 that this Moon was eventually christened Titan. With the advances in telescope designs and technology more and more Moons were discovered throughout the Solar System. Today the count stands at ‘over 176’ natural satellites. It is difficult to give an exact figure because more Moons are being discovered almost daily.

S

o working our way out from the Sun, here’s a rough guide to who has what regarding a Moon. The only two planets that don’t possess at least one Moon are Mercury and Venus. The Earth of course has one Moon, that familiar face in the night sky that inspires artists, poets, songwriters and lovers. It lights our way home on dark nights and controls our ocean tides. While it may not be the biggest Moon in the Solar System, our Moon is the largest in comparison to the parent body i.e. The Earth. All the other Moons are tiny compared to their respective parent body.

ars has two tiny potato-shaped Moons called Phobos and Deimos. Phobos is only 7 miles wide while Deimos is about 15 miles in diameter. Both Moons are probably asteroids that strayed too close to Mars and were captured by its gravity. upiter, being the largest planet also has the lion’s share of Moons, at the last count it was up to 66 natural satellites. Ganymede is the largest Moon in the Solar System; it and Callisto are actually bigger than the planet Mercury. But over 50 of Jupiter’s Moons are less than 10 miles in diameter and were only discovered by space probes since 1975.

S

aturn has over 62 Moons, 53 of which have been given formal names. The largest Moon, Titan, is also bigger than Mercury and is the only Moon in the Solar System known to have an atmosphere of its own. But Saturn’s rings are made from millions of pieces of rock and ice that are also circling the planet so if you were to count each individual piece as a separate Moon then you could say that Saturn has Millions of Moons.

U

ranus has 27 Moons, the five largest are named Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon after Characters from the works of Shakespeare.

N

eptune has at least 13 Moons; the largest is named Triton and could possibly have once been a dwarf planet itself that was captured by Neptune.

E

ven humble Pluto, which is not even considered to be a planet any longer, has a family of 5 Moons. Charon, Nix and Hydra were discovered in 1978 but the last two were only discovered last year by the Hubble Space Telescope and haven’t even been given names yet.

P

S the answer was B). Venus!

40 Million milestone for Ford engines Consistently high output at Ford Dagenham over the last 50 years has propelled production at the East London engine site past the milestone of 40 million engines – enough to stretch 20,000 miles, or four fifths of the way around the globe, when placed end to Dagenham-built engines have powered many famous Ford vehicles including the Ford Escort, Cortina, Capri, and Granada. Today engines from Ford’s largest UK plant power the best-selling vehicles in Britain: the Ford Fiesta, and Ford Focus.

Lorenzo powers to Mugello win Jorge Lorenzo put the hammer down to break clear of Dani Pedrosa and win Sunday's Italian Grand prix at Mugello, extending his championship lead over the Repsol Honda rider

suffered a set-back after a mid-race off consigned him to a lowly eighth place .The only rider to opt for the 'special' harder Bridgestone rear tyre, Stoner ran towards the back of the chasing pack during the opening stages, but an error on lap ten saw him take a lengthy trip off

the circuit at the Correntio bend, dropping him back to a distant tenth position. Though he fought his way back up, administering a robust pass on Alvaro Bautista en route, Stoner eventually crossed the line a frustrated eighth. Reflecting on his clash

with Bautista, which was prompted when Stoner's aggressive attempt to pass at turn two saw him run wide and make contact with the Spaniard, the two-time champion apologised for the incident. Scoring just eight points at the Sachsenring and Mugello, Stoner finds himself 37 points behind Jorge Lorenzo in the overall standings with nine races remaining. Cal Crutchlow says he has plenty of positives to take away from his run to sixth position in the Italian Grand Prix, not least the tips he garnered from spending much of his race tailing Valentino Rossi. Having started in sixth position, a poor getaway left Crutchlow fighting back from the rear end of the top ten, but his progress was stymied by an inability to find his way past Rossi for almost the entire race.

zero-emission Nissan Leaf’s for Portuguese Eight LEAF EVs start patrolling Police Portuguese streets The eight Nissan LEAF police cars will be operated by Portugal’s PSP (Polícia de Segurança Pública) the security force responsible for policing the large urban areas of the country. The multi-award winning, zero-emission cars will be used mainly as part of the PSP’s Safe School Program, but with flashing blue lights, sirens and clear ‘Polícia’ markings, they can be called upon to perform other police duties at any time. Nissan LEAF was chosen by PSP as part of its push to reduce its ecological footprint. “We pride ourselves in being the first police force in the world to incorporate cars with zeroemission technology as part of our 5,000 vehicle fleet,” said Superintendent Paul Gomes Valente, National Director of PSP. “We want to continue

reducing pollution in large urban centres and the

introduction of the 100 per cent electric Nissan LEAF sets a new benchmark for our fleet,” he added. Portugal is an EV pioneer in Europe. It was one of the first countries to

Save the ‘Tassie Devil’ Fresh from his victory at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone last week, Mark Webber has announced that funds raised through his adventure charity race, the Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge, will go to the Save the Tassie Devil Fund. ”Personally, I’m very committed to helping the Tassie Devil, and my charity adventure run is a great way to raise money for them and to increase awareness of their plight. ” The Tasmanian Devil, an animal unique to the island state of Australia, has been listed as endangered, with already 90% of its population wiped out by a facial tumour disease, a fatal condition characterised by cancers around the mouth and head. The disease first appeared in 1996, and there is now a race against time to save the world’s largest surviving carnivorous marsupial, with scientists looking for a cure

before the Devil is wiped out. It’s a cause close to Webber’s heart, who has had a special relationship with Tasmania for over a decade, where he hosts his annual five-day adventure race. The Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge has raised over A$1.5 million for his charity foundation since Webber started the event back in 2006. The F1 star will attend the race, which gets underway in Launceston on Wednesday November 28, straight after the final round of the F1 season in Brazil, and finishes in Hobart on December 2, and has urged others to join him. I’m telling everyone to come down to Tasmania and join in the Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge, Webber said. It’s a teams event, you don’t have to be a super athlete, and you’ll see one of the most spectacular places on earth while raising money for some very good causes.

Starting from second on the grid, Lorenzo sliced under pole man Pedrosa at the apex of turn one and was never headed. The Factory Yamaha star initially struggled to shakeoff his fellow Spaniard, who set the fastest lap of the race on lap 10 of 23 and was just over one-second behind at the midway point. However Pedrosa couldn't sustain such a searing pace in the second half of the race and Lorenzo pulled 5.223 seconds clear by the finish line. “From the beginning I felt great on this track, the asphalt was completely different to Sachsenring which was a nightmare for us. From the first practice here I felt very strong, very good on the bike and a fast constant pace,” said Lorenzo. Casey Stoner's hopes of retaining his MotoGP World Championship crown

England’s Roger Chapman wins second major of the year on the Champion’s Tour

C.O.G.S. early start at Campo America, La Cala Twenty players and guests teed off at 8.30am to finish before the rising summer temperatures. The course, as always, looked in spectacular condition. I think because we live in Spain, we don’t appreciate how lucky we are to play at some great courses and La Cala is one of them. It is kept in great condition, with one of the best club houses.

Ryan Giggs training at La Cala

We were lucky enough to play when the British Olympic football team players were staying in order to practice prior to the games. Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs was sitting amongst the golf players and was only too pleased to chat to people and have his picture taken with golfers and their children. It was a real pleasure to meet such a famous world class player who, when you approached him, made you feel he really didn’t mind being interrupted from his busy schedule. A really nice guy and thank you Ryan for all your time you gave, from all the people who met you. The results as follows:Nearest the pin hole 16 Dell Allwood. Nearest the pin in

two shots hole 2 Tony Hussy. Longest drive hole 12 Nick Carwood. Team winners with 98 points was Dave Williams, Charles Randell (Well done Charles, surprising you could play following the vast amount of alcohol you consumed the night before.) Joe King and Andrew Scott. In third place overall with 31 points Dell Allwood, second place with 32 points on count back Tony Hussy and in first place with 32 points Adam Robinson. Well done Adam as you won the same competition last year. Top guest with 36 points Stephen Anderson. Now we get to the wooden spoon. Who do you think won that? No it wasn’t me it was Phil Beardmore with 11 points. I’m pleased you turned up Phil it took the pressure off me. In case you are wondering why Andy Macfarlane didn’t win a prize he was away in England.(and he wasn’t happy)!! Terry’s par three competition, joint winners with 7 points Andrew Scott and Dell allwood . Nearest the pin hole 4 not taken, hole 8 Adam Robinson, hole 11 not taken, hole 14 Andrew Scott. Thanks as always to Terry Birtles our Captain and Dave Haworth our Treasurer for all their help. Thanks to Elaine at Lainy’s for the nibbles. Our Next outing is at Santa Maria on the 16th August, any guest wishing to participate, enter your name on the signup sheet in Laineys Bar, Sierra Gorda, Coin. Report by Nig Bowler

From self-described European Tour journeyman pro to earning the right to be mentioned in the same sentence with Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Hale Irwin. Roger Chapman shot a 4under 66 on Sunday to win the U.S. Senior Open by two strokes at 10 under at Indianwood. He won the Senior PGA Championship by the same margin two months ago on the other side of Michigan. Chapman, Nicklaus, Player and Irwin are the only players to win the U.S. Senior Open and Senior PGA Championship in the same year. "It's a true honor," Chapman said. Before this year, his career highlight was a European Tour win in

Brazil in 2000. Bernhard Langer (72), Fred Funk (67), Tom Lehman (68) and Corey Pavin (68) finished tied for second at 8-under 272 at the Champions Tour's fourth of five majors. Pavin's two-stroke penalty after his first round for hitting a ball that moved a fraction of an inch proved to be costly. Entering the final round, it seemed as if the only lingering question was how easily Langer would win. Langer, though, found out what the first- and second-round leaders Tom

Kite and Lance Ten Broeckdid the previous two days: It's not easy to stay consistent at Indianwood. Langer took a four-shot lead into the final round and closed with a shaky performance that spoiled his shot at winning his second U.S. Senior Open. The wind picked up considerably on Sunday with gusts up to 20 mph and made it even tougher to keep tee shots on the unforgiving and tight fairways and to accurately approach hard, undulating greens. Chapman answered the

challenge for much of the day with two birdies on the front nine and four through 14 holes. He chunked a shot out of the bunker at 16, leading to a bogey that he made up for on the next hole. The 53-year-old Chapman stepped to the potentially pivotal 195yard, par-3 17th and calmly hit a 5-iron shot that was close enough for a tap-in birdie that restored a twoshot lead.

Britain’s Perry Shakes -Drayton beats the best

Davydova (54.63), Spencer (55.08) and reigning world champion Melaine Walker nowhere. With that run

Antyukh having gone faster this year must be considered a potential medallist across the city in Stratford next month.

Britain's Perri ShakesDrayton destroyed a world-class 400m hurdles field at the London Diamond League with a huge personal best to emerge as a genuine Olympic medal contender at the perfect time. On a damp, wet evening the 23-year-old home-town girl clocked 53.78 seconds, four tenths of a second faster than she has ever run before, to go equal second in the 2012 world rankings and leave Irina Davydova

trailing in second and Kaliese Spencer third. World champion Mo Farah gave himself the ideal Olympic send-off with a dominant 5,000m display, although world 400m hurdles champion Dai Greene was once again beaten by Javier Culson. But it was ShakesDrayton who produced the performance of the night, going hard from the gun, leading into the final bend and pulling away down the home straight with

Royal Lytham Open course under attack Tomorrow ( Thursday) sees the start of the Open Golf championship and Tiger Woods believes the Royal Lytham rough is the toughest he has ever faced as he prepares for the Open."It's just that you can't get out of it. That bottom six inches, in some places is almost unplayable," he said. "I've never seen the rough this high or thick and dense." Defending champion Darren Clarke described it as “brutal” adding: "If you start spraying the ball around this week, you might as well go home."

The yellow-jersey group, about 50 strong, had just made the summit of the main climb of the day, the Mur de Pegure, when reigning champion Cadel Evans experienced the first of three rapid punctures, as unidentified spectators scattered the road with tacks. This was an unbelievable action given that it took place just before a descent on which riders would reach upwards of 60mph. Wiggins, who was

British powerboat racer William Nocker has been killed in a 120mph crash. Nocker was racing in Friday's Gabon Grand Prix, round two of the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship, when he crashed on the fourth lap. The 47-year-old was rushed to Libreville's Omar Bongo Ondimba Military Hospital but doctors were unable to save him. His Norwegian co-pilot Kurt Olsen remains in hospital in a critical condition with multiple fractures of the ribs and scalpula. Eye witnesses described how Nocker's boat flipped and barrel-rolled after hitting two large waves in quick succession during the race. Nocker had only recently returned to

competition after completing a five-year ban for tampering with an opponent's boat in 2007. Nocker's team-mate at the time, former European champion Rob Lister, was caught on CCTV pouring water into a fellow competitor's fuel tank.

Heather Watson has won her first WTA tour title with a doubles victory at the Bank of West Classic in Stanford and has also become British number one. The 20-year-old and her New Zealand partner Marina Erakovic beat Vania King and Jarmila Gajdosova 7-5 7-6 (9-7). "This is my first WTA title, so I'm really happy right now," said Watson. She rises to 71st in the singles rankings - making her the lead Briton for the first time - with three compatriots also in the top

100. Anne Keothavong drops a place to 76th, Laura Robson is the youngest player in the top 100 at a career-high 91st and Elena Baltacha is 100th. It is the first time Britain has had four women in the top 100 since 12 March 1991 when Jo Durie, Sara Gomer, Sarah Loosemore

and Monique Javer formed the quartet. It was Watson's first title of any description on the WTA tour and serves as ideal preparation for her Olympic campaign, where she will team up with Laura Robson for Team GB, after the pair were handed a doubles wildcard.

John Terry found not guilty of racial abuse Former England captain John Terry was found not guilty of racially abusing fellow player Anton Ferdinand on Friday after a five day case which cast a spotlight on racism in football and could have had a huge impact on his career. The 31-year-old Chelsea captain was in Westminster Magistrates' Court to hear chief magistrate Howard Riddle read his verdict. The case triggered the resignation in February of England's Italian manager Fabio Capello after the FA decided to strip Terry of the captain's armband for Euro 2012.

Saudi Arabian women to compete at Games Saudi Arabia is to send two female athletes to compete in London the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said. Sarah Attar will compete in the 800m and Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani in the judo competition. The Saudi authorities lifted a ban on women from the Gulf kingdom competing in the Games last month. The public participation of women in sport is still fiercely opposed by many Saudi religious conservatives.
