Wildfires kill four in Catalonia After four people died in the forest fires which have been devastating parts of Catalonia since Sunday, the regional government’s Interior minister, Felipe Puig, said on Tuesday he will do “everything possible” to find the people who allegedly threw cigarette ends out of car windows and started the fires. He has asked people to take photos of such incidents with their mobile phones and send them to the police so that they can trace the owners of the vehicles. Another possibility was getting DNA from cigarette ends but he admitted that would be an extremely difficult solution because the region’s DNA database was still very limited. Two of those who died were a 60-year-old

died after suffering a cardiac arrest in Llers, north-west of the area's main town, Figueres.
Several other people caught by the fire did the same and were badly injured. The fire near Portbou has now been contained. A Frenchman aged 64, who suffered severe burns, died on Monday. The fourth victim was a 75-year-old man who

Some 1,300 people left their homes in Alt Emporda district and spent the night in sports halls and social clubs, to avoid the fires raging on both sides of the AP-7, highway from Figueres to La Jonquera, while another 135,000 residents were ordered to stay indoors and keep their doors and windows closed.
About 20 people have been injured fleeing the blazes, while hundreds of firefighters have been deployed, struggling as 90km/h gusts of wind fan the flames. Smoke from the fires even reached parts of Barcelona
At press time, the western flank of the blaze was still proving hard to contain.
A forest fire is also raging in the parched Caceres region of southwestern Spain, again
About 50 people have been evacuated from the village of Cambron in the affected area, which is mostly wild pine forest.
The United States wants an eight-year extension for its defence cooperation agreement with Spain, which regulates the presence of US troops in the military bases at Rota in Cádiz province and Morón de la Frontera in Seville province. The current agreement was signed in 1988, and partially amended in 2002 and extended for another eight years by José María Aznar’s government. Since February 2011, it automatically gets a oneyear extension if neither party expresses opposition.

‘Father’ of the constitution dies Former Speaker Gregorio Peces-Barba died at a hospital in Asturias on Tuesday morning of renal insufficiency complicated by a heart attack. He was 74. He was born in Madrid in 1938 and joined the then banned Socialist Party in 1972. After Francisco Franco’s death, he was elected MP for Valladolid. At the request of the party, he took part on its behalf in the drafting of the Constitution, and was one of the seven so-called “fathers” to put his signature to the final document. He was appointed Speaker by the country’s first post-Franco Socialist PM, Felipe Gonzalez, in 1982 and

unfortunately, we have been told by Lidl staff that they have a new area manager who won’t allow free newspapers to be left at their stores. So far, it’s only the Lidl at the bottom of the Mijas hill and the one in Coin that have been affected, and if anybody leaves papers there, they will simply throw them in the bin which is a waste of my money, a waste of our advertisers’ money and no good whatsoever to our readers. For people in the Mijas area who used to get their papers from the Lidl at the bottom of the hill, you can get them from lots of places in Fuengirola itself plus Iceland, Lidl near Iceland and dunnes stores. For people in Coin, we have a new stand outside our office with copies – that’s on the opposite side of the main road from the La Trocha Commercial Centre on the outskirts of Coin. There are also papers in the La Trocha garage, Spanbox, One Stop Shop, Festival Café upstairs, and the CHAIn shop in La Trocha, Buyright, Bar Chani and the Repsol Garage on El Rodeo then Cudeca, Roberto’s, Casa de la Cultura, and Cohesa and Todoserve. If you have any problems getting a copy of The news, please pop in and see us or give us a ring on 952 454 491 and we’ll be able to point you in the right direction. Meanwhile, we are in talks with Lidl head office to try and rectify the situation. I will let you know if it can be done ASAP.

The road has since been reopened to traffic and the main railway line north to France is also open. But the fire is still raging inland to the west and there are fears that a change in wind direction will drive the flames into the wooded Alta Garrotxa area, parts of which are difficult to reach.

Clamp down on markets Spain has banned short-selling of shares to try to limit price moves after markets fell sharply on fears that the country may need a full bailout. Market regulator CNMV blocked the practice for three months to try to restore order after sharp falls in bonds and shares: "The situation of extreme volatility across the European markets could interfere with their smooth functioning and the normal course of their activities” it said in a statement. Economy minister Luis de Guindos called the markets “irrational”.
He met his German counterpart in Berlin on Tuesday but the results of the meeting were not known at press time. back the asset at a lower price and return it to its owner, making a profit along the way. It is not the first time that such a curb has been used by regulators. Almost a year ago, France and Belgium joined Spain and Italy in a ban on short-selling financial
stocks to try to stabilise bank shares which had fallen sharply. Markets have had a turbulent few days because of fears that Spain's indebted regional governments will push the country towards a full bailout. On Friday, Valencia, one of the
country's 17 regions, asked the central government for a financial lifeline, and on Sunday, the Murcia region said it was considering following suit. Meanwhile, Minister De Guindos denied the country needed more help. He told reporters: "We have made important economic

The family of businessman Publio CordĂłn, who was kidnapped in 1995, believed the mystery surrounding his death would be solved after the arrest by the Guardia Civil last Thursday of three former members of GRAPO, a terrorist group with Maoist ideas which was active in the 1970s and 1980s.
Cecilio, JosĂŠ Antonio RamĂłn Teijelo and Manuela Ontanilla GalĂĄn had taken him to hospital. But they had preferred to let him die to avoid being caught. FernĂĄndez DĂaz also said that the arrests were made possible through the cooperation of a protected witness. He said Spanish and French police worked together to locate the house, where they found evidence, including CordĂłn’s DNA and handmade marks inside the closet indicating the number of days that he was locked up inside.
Interior minister Jorge FernĂĄndez DĂaz told Parliament they had been arrested in Seville and CĂĄdiz, and that the house in Lyon, France where the victim was held, had been located. He said the entrepreneur from Zaragoza had been locked inside a closet but had managed to escape, However, he died of injuries sustained when he fell from a first floor window.
Cordon’s family welcomed the news of the arrests, saying they hoped the authorities would now be able to find his body so that they could give him a proper burial. However, on Monday, their anger knew no bounds when they heard that Judge Javier Gomez Bermudez had

released two of the suspects on bail, claiming they were not a flight risk. Cordon’s two daughters, Carmen and Maria, said the judge had plunged them “once again into this nightmareâ€?. She said he had also made a mockery of the Guardia Civil who had never given up the search for their father’s remains and his killers. CordĂłn, founder of the Previasa insurance company and the Quiron Hospital Group, was kidnapped on June 27th, 1995 when he was jogging near his home in Zaragoza. Six weeks later, his family paid the kidnappers 400 million pesetas (over â‚Ź2.4 million today) in Paris, but CordĂłn was never seen again. In an interview with the newspaper La RazĂłn, the minister said the government is reviewing the current abortion law passed in 2010 by the Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s Socialist government to bring Spain in line with other European countries.
Gallardón said he intended to eliminate abortion on demand until the 14th week, and return to something closer to the previous law that only allowed abortions in cases of rape, physical or mental risk for the mother and foetal malformation – except the malformation clause will be eliminated, too.

Freed aid workers arrive home
The Spanish chapter of the WWF has removed King Juan Carlos as its honorary president for going on an elephant hunting trip in Botswana. The group voted overwhelmingly to abolish the post last Friday. It said in a statement on Saturday: "Although this type of hunting is legal and regulated, many members consider it to be incompatible with the position of honorary patron of an international organisation that aims to
protect the environment.” News of the hunting trip only emerged in April after the king slipped and hurt his hip while in Botswana. He was flown home for an emergency operation. The national and international press splashed a photo of the king on a previous safari, in
which he is seen standing with a gun beside a dead elephant. That got the national press wondering just how many secret hunting trips had taken place in the past. A majority of Spaniards said they forgave him in a survey taken after the king made an unprecedented public apology but said it
had been “inappropriate” for the king to go hunting in the middle of and economic crisis. An online petition calling for his resignation from the WWF post accumulated almost 85,000 signatures by the time he made his public apology.
Pastor said that certain shortand mediumdistance routes operated by Renfe will be closed because they are “neither economically or socially profitable”. Pastor said that as of July 31st, 2013, the rail industry, which is managed by the state-holding Administrator of Railroad

Counterfeit jewellery seized The National Police seized more than 62,000 counterfeit pieces of jewellery of the Chanel, Bulgari and Tous brands, among others, and arrested four Chinese citizens in raids on three premises in an industrial estate in the Fuenlabara district of the capital over the weekend. They said the men arrested implemented strict security measures when dealing with prospective buyers, showing them only a few pieces in one warehouse, then bringing the bulk from another after the deal was made.
Railways shake-up The government announced last Friday that it intends to shake-up the country’s money-losing rail industry by opening the to private sector companies and eliminating the state-owned Feve, which operates routes in Cantabria, León, Galicia and Bilbao. Service there will be assumed by Renfe. Public Works Minister Ana
an advisor to the president of Burkina Faso, who was acting as a mediator, has revealed that last week's release of two Spanish aid workers and their italian colleague, who had been kidnapped and held by terrorists in mali since October, was accomplished in exchange for the release of three detainees thought to have taken part in the abduction. Enric Gonyalons and ainhoa Fernández and the italian rosella Urru arrived at the Torrejón de ardoz airbase near madrid late on Thursday. Foreign minister José manuel García-margallo refused to provide further details to avoid hampering ongoing efforts to win the freedom of two other Spanish aid workers being held in Somalia and seven Europeans held by al Qaeda in mali.

Moody's warns on credit rating
A global super-rich elite had at least $21 trillion (£13tn) hidden in secret tax havens by the end of 2010, according to a major study by the Tax Justice Network, which campaigns against tax havens. The figure is equivalent to the size of the US and Japanese economies combined. The report entitled The Price of Offshore Revisited, said $21tn is actually a conservative figure and the true scale could be $32tn. A trillion is 1,000 billion. The study is based on data from the Bank of International Settlements, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and national governments, and deals only with financial wealth deposited in bank and investment accounts, and not other assets such
The credit ratings agency Moody's has warned the outlook for germany's aaa credit rating is negative, the first step towards a possible downgrade. The ratings for the eurozone's other top-rated economies – the netherlands and Luxembourg – were also put on negative outlooks. Shooting suspect appears in court James Holmes, who is accused of killing 12 people in a shooting at a Batman film screening in Aurora, Colorado appeared in court for the first time on Monday. The 24-year-old, wearing a red jail suit and with his hair dyed orange, appeared dazed during the proceedings. Seven of 58 people wounded by the
gunman remain in critical condition. On Sunday, President Barack Obama met survivors and families of the dead as hundreds of people took part in a service of remembrance. The judge ordered Holmes to be held without bail in solitary confinement at a jail in Centennial, Colorado.
The suspect is accused of throwing two canisters of gas into a busy midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises early on Friday, before firing at random into the crowd. Witnesses say he was wearing full body armour during the attack. The office of prosecutor Carol Chambers is considering whether to

Cuba dissident was 'driven off road' The family of prominent Cuban dissident Oswaldo Paya, who died in a car crash on Sunday, have said they believe his car had been pushed off the road deliberately. At a funeral mass attended by hundreds of people in Havana on Monday, Mr Paya's son, Oswaldo, told foreign correspondents his father had received many death threats. The authorities
said the driver lost control of the car as he was driving on a road near the city of Bayamo in eastern Granma province and hit a tree. Mr Paya, 60, was one of Cuba's main prodemocracy campaigners. A fellow activist, 31-year-old Harold Cepero, was also killed in the accident. Two other people – one Swede and one Spaniard – were injured but have now left hospital.
In 2002, Mr Paya won the Sakharov Prize – the European Union's human rights award – for his work with the Varela Project, which was created in 1998 to gather signatures in support of a referendum on laws guaranteeing civil rights. The Cuban government described him as an agent of the United States who was working to undermine the country's revolution.

Show them More foreign what we can do criminals stay in UK Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said that the London Olympic Games will show the world what Britain is capable of, adding that they will boost confidence at a time when the country needs it.
He said: “We’ve been through a very difficult patch and I think what we’re going to see over the next seven weeks is not just the fact that we’re capable of putting on the world’s biggest sports event in the calm, professional and disciplined way that I know we will, but also playing to our great cultural strengths,” saying that the UK’s building industry would be a major benefactor. He added: “London has three of the world’s top five museums. The opening ceremony will tell that Britain is the home of literature, the home of
music, the home of the Industrial Revolution that shaped the modern world.”
Mr Hunt said: “Twenty years ago we were sometimes a laughing stock as a country, we couldn’t even build a stadium without it going over budget and being massively delayed. But here you have the biggest construction project in Europe completed on time – most of it a year early.” And on Sunday Amelia Hempleman-Adams, who at 16 became the youngest person to ski to the South Pole, held aloft the Olympic flame on top of one of the pods at the top of the London Eye. Former heavyweight World Champion boxer Lennox Lewis and classical pianist Lanf Lang were among the 163 torchbearers.
250 foreign criminals have been allowed to stay in Britain following the end of their sentences without their cases ever being considered by a court of law, it has been reported in The Sunday Telegraph. At least one terrorist, up to eight killers and rapists, 20 robbers and eight paedophiles were given permission to stay last year by the Home Office accepting that deportation would be a breach of their human rights, without a judge deciding their fate. They also reported that they had found through the freedom of Information act that there has been a dramatic increase in such cases – from 56 in 2008, 80 in 2009, 217 in 2010 and 250 last year.
Open New memorial Sunday trading laws in England and Wales are being relaxed during the Games to allow retailers togenerate tens of millions of pounds in increased profits. Shop staff will legally be able to opt out of working on a Sunday but the Association of Convenience Stores said that the relaxed trading times will cost them millions of pounds in sales as the big supermarkets lure their Sunday customers away.
Explosion The roof of a bungalow in Huntcliffe Gardens in the Heaton area of Newcastle was blown off at around 2:15 on Sunday in what is believed to have been a gas explosion. Its 65-year-old occupant was taken to hospital although it is understood his injuries are not lifethreatening. A neighbouring property was evacuated and the street was closed off for safety reasons.
A new memorial has been unveiled to those whot lost their lives during World War 1 – to honour the Preston Pals, a group of soldiers from Lancashire. They left for war from Preston Railway Station in 1914 to join the army and many of them died in the subsequent battles.
Businessman Andre Mather said he had made it his mission to commemorate and celebrate all of the Pals after learning there was no memorial to them. He helped raise 10,000 pounds for the plaque adding: “Instinctively, as a Preston lad, I felt it had to be done.”
Cockles Moo! A community council on the Solway coast of Scotland is in the middle of a row over who should police the waters in the area, the result of which is that illegal cockle picking is flourishing. A spokesperson said that the cockle gangs cause damage and leave residents in fear for their safety. Cockle picking was banned in the Solway in September 2011. Police said they have insufficient powers to enforce the ban while Marine Scotland said it is “unsafe” for its staff to tackle the gangs.
Dairy farmers blockaded processing plants at the Robert Wiseman Dairy in Droitwich Spa and a plant in Foston in Derbyshire whilst protesting against cuts in the price of milk of up to 2p a litre. The farmers claim that it costs them more to produce the milk than they are getting from supermarket giants such as Morrisons, Asda and the Co-op. However, after last week’s protests, the Cooperative supermarket chain said it would increase the premium it paid to farmers within its group.

Theresa May, Home Secretary, said last year that she would spearhead a crackdown on the “right to a family life” defence to avoid deportation. A UK Border Agency spokesman said: “There is no point in wasting tax payers’ money contesting cases where we were advised we would lose. We examined each claim individually but case law based on the old rules meant the courts were highly unlikely to uphold them. That’s why the rules were changed last month to help us remove criminals who try to use Article 8 to dodge deportation. As a result we believe we will see fewer cases where the government is likely to lose, and therefore fewer uncontested hearings.”

Salz appointed
IN BRIEF
EdinBuRGH Anthony Salz, former senior partner at Freshfields and current vice chairman at the investment bank Rothschild, has been confirmed as the chair of a probe charged with establishing a new code of conduct for thousands of City bankers following the recent debacle at Barclays Bank. Mr Salz was the preferred candidate for the job of directors of the bank including Sir Mike Rake, the deputy chairman of Barclays who will head the board sub-committee responsible for supervising the inquiry. The sub-committee was reported as comprising non-executive directors including David Booth, a former head of government bond trading at Morgan Stanley. Mr Salz will further appoint an external adviser, likely to be a major City law firm, to assist with the enquiry. Lloyds Banking Group, also under investigation by regulators for attempting to manipulate the Libor interbank borrowing rate started the interim results season yesterday, Tuesday, with Barclays following on today. In the meantime Sir Mike Rake has indicated that he is not interested in taking over as chief executive of Barclays from Marcus Agius as, it is understood, he wants to concentrate on his roles as chairman of BT and budget airline easyJet where he is under pressure from major shareholder and founder Sir Stelios Haji –Ioannou to quit. This means that a new appointment is likely to be several weeks away which has not pleased investors in the bank.

Shock accident at museum Cash-in-hand “morally wrong” Karl Doran, seven years old, from Darlington died at the Beamish Museum in County Durham on Sunday. The child was riding on a steam roller traction engine and was hit by the trailer the engine it was pulling when he fell off. The boy was confirmed dead at the scene after
suffering serious head injuries by North East Ambulance Service. The whole site was closed following the incident at around 3pm Sunday. The engine driver was taken to University Hospital of North Durham suffering from shock. News was later released that the driver was

Dorset landslide At time of going to press last night, news was emerging of at least one person being trapped under rocks after a landslide at a beach in Dorset. Emergency services were called to the incident near the Freshwater Beach Holiday Park in Burton Bradstock at about 12.30pm. South West Ambulance Service said: "One person is reported as being trapped and the ambulance service is working in partnership with the other agencies on the scene to reach them as quickly as possible." A spokeswoman for the coastguard said the landslide was about 400m from the park on the Jurassic Coast, which is popular with fossil hunters caravanners, campers and tourists of all kinds.
Witness Len Muggeridge, who was fishing off the coast, told Sky News: "Basically we heard a large thunder-like sound and we looked up and half of the cliff towards Freshwater had fallen down. Within 20 minutes there were people tramping over the top of it and then a second fall occurred. I would say somewhere in the region of about 30 or 40 tonnes of rock fell in the first fall and somewhere in the region of about 100 tonnes or more in the second fall." In a joint statement Dorset Police and Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Officers, with assistance from the police helicopter, are currently working alongside Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and other agencies to search the area. The Urban Search and
Rescue Team (USAR) from Devon and Somerset has also been deployed to this incident. This is a national resource." The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said three Coastguard rescue teams and the Coastguard rescue helicopter based in Portland are also at the scene in Lyme Bay. The landslide comes just over two weeks after severe flooding left much of the community under water. Residents said flood water surged to heights of about one metre at its worst, forcing home owners to flee and scattering vehicles through the village. People who are familiar with the area are aware that, from time to time, it is subject to rock falls and cliff erosion in general.
Treasury Minister David Gauke has slammed the practice of paying cash for casual labour such as cleaners, mobile hairdressers, gardeners, mechanics, jobbing builders and plumbers etc., saying that it is “morally wrong” and that it costs the UK in the region of £2 billion every year in unpaid revenue. "Getting a discount with your plumber by paying cash in hand is something that is a big cost to the Revenue and means others have to pay more in tax," Mr Gauke said, "I think it is morally wrong. It is illegal for the plumber but it is pretty implicit in those circumstances that there is a reason why there is a discount for cash. That is a large part of the hidden economy." It is not illegal for a householder to ask for a discount, any more than it is illegal for them to pay for such services in cash if that is what the deal with the tradesperson is. Under UK law the onus of paying tax and VAT lies squarely on
the trader and it is they who are breaking the law. Hardpressed families and pensioners just want the best deal possible. In the meantime it has been reported recently that HM Revenue and Customs plans an amnesty to encourage workmen to pay their fair share of taxes. The Government has launched a consultation paper about the plans, which follow a wave of disclosures about the financial loopholes used by the rich and famous to legally side-step hefty tax bills. The Treasury hopes the reforms will mean officials, often hit with dead-ends when investigating schemes that are based offshore, will be able to follow up new leads as cowboy tax advisers are forced to disclose their client databases. Let’s hope that Mr Gawke’s wife never paid the lady that does her ironing or her cleaner in cash!

No worries, just memories Funeral Care Spain is a unique company here on the Costa del Sol. Funeral directors who work mostly with the expat community, giving a quality service day or night at a clear, competitive price. Those who contact the team at FCS immediately know that this established company can deal with any situation arising from the passing of a loved one. A company formed after the owners suffered a close, personal loss, FCS specialise in taking all the paperwork and making all the arrangements, simplifying it so as to give those affected time to come to terms with their loss and be close to family members. The main differences? Firstly, Funeral Care Spain speak your language, they understand the traditions and procedures that give comfort in times of need, and work with the Spanish system to provide a seamless service. Secondly, they are tied into a national Spanish company with 72 offices across Spain and its
islands so they have the weight and influence to protect those in their care. Thirdly and for some most importantly, FCS has a clear, open pricing policy. They never allow work to proceed without written consent and closed, fixed prices. But Funeral Care Spain is not all about gloom and doom. It provides many modern and traditional services to compliment the basic services. Customised coffins with anything from a football team flag through to family photos blended into its finish, English pastors and clergy, boats for scattering ashes in the sea and even a music finding service to make sure every service is a unique celebration of life. For those who prefer more traditional methods FCS staff have been trained to page in and out of the place of rest and chapel if requested and soon FCS hope to have permission to use their antique horse drawn hearse for the final farewell. All of these services and more can be

Personal visits can be made to your home or favourite café, or if you prefer you can meet them by appointment in their offices in Malaga or Marbella. A dedicated office is also soon to open in Mijas Pueblo. Always remember here in Spain, despite what you may hear, at the time of loss you are not obliged to use the services of any funeral director. Unfortunately ‘Ambulance Chasing’ is
common with many companies, and the only way this is funded is through the final bill presented to the family. FCS never pay these ‘expenses’ and rely on their reputation and quality of service to grow their business. Funeral Care Spain are available to discuss any wishes and dispel and rumours from their office 951 909 264 or 24hr hour assistance on 654 056 653. Or even via the internet, www.funeralspain.com. The Traffic Authority’s Malaga office is considering raising the speed limit on the A-7 between Fuengirola and Manilva to 100 kph, after reducing it to 80 kph a year ago. Provincial Trafico head Trinidad Hernandez said there had been seven fatal road accidents in that time, down from nine during the same period the previous year. She said there was no evidence that the reduced speed limit was responsible for the decrease, but added that it had definitely reduced the number of accidents involving only material damage.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
My hero
J
ust as I was despairing of finding something nice to write about this week, determined to get away from political and economic gloom and doom, I suddenly remembered the date – July 24th – the day Simon Bolivar, Liberator of Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador was born in Caracas in 1783. Ignore the fact that Bolivar is also the hero of the current monster misgoverning Venezuela, who called his Bolivarian revolution after him. Bolivar himself wouldn’t even have noticed Chavez existed if they’d lived at the same time. Bolivar wasn’t a snob but he was a “mantuano”, that is, a member of the ruling class so named because its women were the only ones in the Viceroyalty of Colombia and the rest of the Spanish Empire who were allowed to wear the traditional Spanish mantilla and peinete – veil and comb. Chavez, being of Indian descent, would probably have been working as a slave on one of Bolivar’s estates if he’d lived then.
B
ut let’s not be vindictive. Let’s talk about the many connections between Bolivar and the British, whom he greatly admired. The British admired him back but they were just as keen to use him to split up the Spanish Empire, so they backed him to the hilt. As a result, the Americans feared Bolivar, believing he want to set up a British-style monarchy in the newly liberated territories with himself as king. Nothing could have been farther from the truth. What he wanted was an English-style parliament and system of government. Unfortunately he couldn’t infuse British pragmatism into hot Venezuelan and Latin American heads. Hence what could have been one of the greatest endeavours in all history ended in ignominy, with Bolivar, wearing a nightgown borrowed from a Spanish friend, dying of tuberculosis in Santa Martha, an obscure little town on the Colombian coast on December 17th, 1830, while he waited for a reply from the British and French governments to his request for asylum. The French arrived first, two weeks after Bolivar died. He would have been welcomed with open arms in either country.
I
n the meantime, the British had sent him the British Legion, soldiers they wanted out of England after the end of the Napoleonic Wars to stop them from stirring up all kinds of trouble as they tried to fit back into civilian life. However, in Venezuela they were a pretty disciplined lot but because of their presence to this day many Venezuelans resent the fact that
Doomsday politics Bolivar relied so heavily on foreign troops – the British Legion was made up of Scots, Irish and North Americans as well as Englishmen. He relied on them mainly because they had all fought in real wars and knew what they were doing, unlike the vast majority of Venezuelans who tended to run away at the first sound of gunfire. He couldn’t even trust the fearsome llaneros, the wild cowboys from the country’s great plains who only followed one man, their leader, Antonio Paez – and even he had to watch his back.
B
olivar clinched Venezuela’s independence from Spain at the Battle of Carabobo on June 24th, 1821. He had allowed the Spanish to choose the battlefield so his men were at a disadvantage from the beginning. After the Spaniards had routed his troops in less than an hour, the British Legion marched onto the field in pairs along a narrow track. They were sitting ducks for the Spanish but those who survived formed a square and proceeded to hold off all the Spanish attacks, losing 19 officers in 20 minutes.
T
hey were 20 vital minutes for Bolivar. He rounded up his men, entered the field from the opposite side to where the Legion was hanging on in there and routed the Spaniards.
S
ince then only the British armed forces have been allowed to carry arms in Venezuela, as Fidel Castro learned when he visited Caracas in 1961. He arrived with dozens of armed bodyguards, to be told by then President Romulo Betancourt: “Disarm your men, only the British can carry arms here.”
I P
suspect Hugo Chavez wouldn’t let the British anywhere near Venezuela today!
S: I hate to disagree with my fellow columnist Martin Delfin, who seems to believe that Mariano Rajoy will not survive if he has to ask for a full bail-out – because “none of the leaders in Portugal, Ireland or Greece survived after their own bailout deals”. It’ll be boring but I’ll check the Constitution to see if any clause covers the current situation. Rajoy has a solid majority in Parliament and the only way to oust him would be to reduce the country to anarchy – something the Socialists and Communists are doing their best to bring about. I suspect they may not succeed – the Spanish know what happens at the end of a civil war and they don’t want to go through that again.
N
o one is talking about it but then again no one is actually convincingly denying it. When will “the big B” occur? Perhaps it won’t be too long before Spain queues up in the short line and asks Brussels for that full bailout. Economy minister Luis de Guindos on Monday continued to insist before Parliament that Spain won’t need a rescue, but the credibility of this Partido Popular government is shot to hell and the hard money facts are startling.
V
alencia announced that it will tap into the central government’s recently created regional liquidity fund (FLA) for more than €2 billion to help pay its bills. Murcia also asked for more than €200 million and other regions are expected to follow. Rajoy’s government believes that it can finance the FLA to the tune of €18 billion through state-administered public debt, plus a loan from the national lottery agency worth about €6 billion. Wishful thinking! In the meantime, Spain is seeking a minibailout for its troubled banks of up to €100 billion. Tax revenues are expected to go down next year and in 2014, according to Finance minister Cristóbal Montoro, who said earlier in Parliament there isn’t enough money to pay the salaries of public servants. The government has made some €65 billion cuts at the start of what plans to be a long recession. Spain’s GDP contraction in the second quarter widened to 0.4 percent from 0.3 percent in the first, and the markets continue to punish this country as the nation’s risk premium soars to more than 600 basis points over the benchmark German bund. The cost of servicing Spain’s debt has risen to close to 7.5 per cent. Harrowing figures, if you ask me. The Rajoy government still hasn’t said how much it will ask for its bank restructuring. It won’t know until it studies the conclusions of several in-depth audits on the financial institutions, which won’t be ready until September. Two other independent audits released in June put the figure at around €62 billion.
I
f Mariano Rajoy asks for a full bailout, he knows that it will be the end of his career as prime minister – none of the leaders in Portugal, Ireland or Greece survived after their own bailout deals. Since he came to office Rajoy has been governing through improvisation. He said he was going to cut government workers’ Christmas bonuses this year but, after a series of violent protests in Madrid, Finance minister Montoro later
rectified that it won’t include civil servants who earn less than €962 euros – a last minute foxy ploy to try to calm disturbed waters that indeed are still turbulent. The prime minister’s pledges for state pensions were a true flip-flop. After José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero cut them, Rajoy promised to raise them as soon as he got to Moncloa, which he did, but sliced them again a few months later. And the VAT was another punch at his government’s credibility. Rajoy had repeatedly he would not raise VAT, only to go back on his word this month and hike the standard tax from 18 to 21 per cent beginning in September. It is not going to be a pretty autumn.
Y
es, government cutbacks have to be made, but they must be sensible and should not be done in a manner which blatantly affect citizens, especially in an imminent recession’s onslaught. Facing growing social unrest, Rajoy is not in a pleasant position, but it is his own fault for failing to lay a foundation to calm the discontent and anger of frightened Spaniards. In fact, he has only increased the risk of having eventually to deal with a social implosion by hiding out in Moncloa, avoiding giving tough answers.
N
ow, turning to the I-told-you-so department, former Prime Minister Felipe González is urging the PP to form a great unprecedented national pact among the parties and community, financial and social leaders to draft solutions and pressure Europe into acting more swiftly to help Spain’s debt crisis. This is the same concept I proposed in this column more than three years ago (“Those four million” The News, April 29th, 2009), when I advised the Zapatero government to form a nonpartisan high-level commission of prominent citizens, community and religious leaders as well as representatives of all the political parties to help steer the country away from what we all correctly predicted then was going to be an sharp economic plunge. But party and union bickering, selfishness and business interests are the major factors why such a pact will never come about in Spain. I for one don’t want to see this country ruined further by a Brussels bailout and the conditions attached to it. But instead of encouraging us and making significant moves to manoeuvre us clear away from this situation, Rajoy is only dealing in doomsday politics.

1st British National Day
La Trocha shopping centre in Coin is organising their first British National Day, with the objective of bringing together the British community all over the province of Málaga and to give the Spanish community the chance to get to know the culture, traditions and gastronomy the UK has to offer. The exhibition will take place this Saturday the 28th of July, from 10 in the morning until 10 at night. The day will be an opportunity for local British people to show what they do in Spain. It will be open to anyone with a skill, an interest or a hobby that they may wish to showcase, and to any businesses which cater mainly for British people.
The exhibit spaces will be congregated along the main corridor of the shopping centre, they will have a 3x4m2 space each. Also in the recreational area, there will be performances from British bands. To make this project a reality, we need your collaboration so that every one of these people and companies can sell their products or services on this coming Saturday. On the 18th of July, we asked for a financial contribution from each exhibitor with the intention of donating the total amount to various charities. We understand the current financial situation has led few companies to be able to contribute a donation. La Trocha wants to get the British public together and help different associations, so we are funding 100% of the cost of the event.
If you would like to participate in this event, please get in touch with María González vía email: secretaria@centrolatrocha.com

Local artist Chandy Haggett, one of Andalucia’s best known and respected artists is holding an exhibition at Casa Paco on El Rodeo, Coin, from 27th July and through the month of August. The inaugural event will be on Friday 27th July starting at 8pm when you will be able to browse among her prints and partake of tapas, wine and refreshments while you decide which of her hand silk screen prints will best go with your décor. Chandy has been practising her craft here in
inland Spain for over 30 years and her works depict the rural life in the area. You can feel the sun beating down on the backs of the workers in the fields, the cats sitting around the steps outside the house in the sun and the old women strolling along as they go about their daily tasks. Chandy says: “The new works I shall be exhibiting at Casa Paco’s are full of the vibrancy of our area and include prints of an extended family sitting under the lemon trees and a Semana Santa procession with the hooded cofredias. She was recently featured on Gilly Revel’s profile show on TRE choosing six pieces of her favourite music and talking

He is a cross sheep dog, born in February 2010. He is a dog with lots of character and even more energy. He loves to play and has lots of toys. Buzby is a very intelligent dog and like all sheep dogs, needs stimulation. His foster mum says: “I walk him free of a lead, we pass horses, sheep and other dogs and he is no problem. At home I have cats and chickens, no problem. He loves to ride in the car. He is also great with kids.” If you can give Buzby the new home with all the love he deserves, tel: 626 942 427. Born August 2008. He had been hanging around the countryside for two months. Bruce is a very friendly and gentle dog. In 2011 we found a home for Bruce but things did not work out as he kept on escaping looking for company of other dogs and where he lived there are hunters etc that could harm him. He would be ideal for a home with a 2m walled garden or secure fencing. He is lovely on the lead, sits etc.... He is in our refuge at the moment and it is not the ideal place for such a lovely and gentle boy. Call 626 942 427. Visit the AID website at www.animals-in-distress.eu
The Benalmadena Branch of the Royal Air Force Association held their 10th annual Dinner and Dance at the Tamisa Golf Hotel on a very warm July Costa del Sol night last weekend. Everybody turned out in their best bib and tucker for the event, Jo Layte was to supply the music and entertainment later on and canapés were enjoyed on the terrace. The evening was opened by Fred Briggs who thanked everybody for coming and introduced Terry Joy who was a guest from the Costa Blanca branch of the association to all. Cedric Sayce read the dedication and Derek Brown the blessing before everyone was served a sumptuous three course meal. Raffle prizes included a
big purple teddy – later named Ken! – wines, RAF memorabilia, whisky tumblers from the House of Commons, a leather handbag, microwaveable slippers (brilliant for the winter months), a whisky gift box including whisky, whisky cake and hip flask. Following the raffle an auction was held for two rounds of golf and a buggy at Calanova Golf that raised €60 and a night at the Tamisa Golf Hotel for two, bed and breakfast that was snapped up for €80 – what a bargain! A total of €391 was made on the night to help RAFA help those in need. After the fundraising part of the evening, dancing to singer Jo Layte was enjoyed by all until midnight.
Normally, a person can feel the warning signals of low blood sugar (sweating, shaking, nausea, and confusion); however, some people are unable to feel these symptoms and are thus unaware that their blood sugar is dropping or is dangerously low. This can lead to seizures, brain damage, or passing out while driving. A Diabetic Alert Service Dog is a dog that gives a trained signal to alert its partner to low or high blood sugar levels. I would like to introduce a dear friend, Nina Bondarenko. Australian-born, Nina is a specialist Animal Behaviour consultant and coach. She is a TV and radio presenter, author artist and lecturer. Nina can train your dog to be a Diabetic Alert Dog by guiding and training your dog to alert you in advance of low (hypoglycemia) or high (hyperglycemia) blood sugar events before they become dangerous, so that you can take steps
to return your blood sugar to normal, such as using glucose sweets or taking insulin. The dogs are trained to accompany their owners wherever they travel in the same manner as guide dogs and assistance dogs. The dog is rewarded for finding a high blood sugar (it is supposed to smell like tooty fruity gum) or the low blood sugar that is supposed to smell like rusty water or nail polish remover. Tarra Robinson, who after having Type 1 diabetes her entire life, became unaware of her low blood sugars, a condition known as hypo-unawareness. She began passing out at work and crashed her car due to unexpected lows. An insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor didn’t improve the situation. She then began the training process with her Lab/Golden Retriever mix named Duchess and her life has changed. Part 2 next week

CHANGES TO Longer hours RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS Recent changes to the Spanish residency requirements, effective as of 10th July 2012, now mean that EU, EEA and Swiss citizens who intend to settle here in Spain could now – and probably will be – required to show evidence of sufficient means of support and also private or public health insurance for themselves and their dependants. Spanish law requires that anyone who has lived in Spain for three months and intends to continue living here must include themselves on the Central Register of Foreign Nationals. Provided the requirements have been met, they must – immediately – be given a certificate showing the information that has been recorded in their name, commonly known as a “Residencia”. Anyone renewing an existing “Residencia” will probably not have to supply the additional information and once issued a Residencia is now permanent and need only be amended say for change of address. This certificate used to be in the form of a green A4 sheet of paper and showed the resident’s name, nationality, place and date of birth, NIE number, address and date of registration. Recently this has been changed to a smaller green credit card sized document. However neither this nor the larger and older A4 document are a form of identification, it is simply a certificate of registration. Essentially the only people authorized to
issue an EU resident with any identity document is their own government. Many EU member state citizens have a handy ID card as well as a passport but in the case of “the Brits” their only ID document is their passport. Although other documents like a photo-card driver’s license maybe accepted depending on the situation. Very few airlines would accept a driver’s licence in lieu of a passport whereas a shop or similar might. Again essentially, the expanded residency requirements are there to ensure that anyone moving to Spain for a bit of sunshine and a more Mediterranean lifestyle does not become a burden on the state either financially or for healthcare. An unofficial but more in-depth translation of the new rules covering employed persons, self employed, pensioners, students and people living but not working in Spain, their spouses, dependants and family can be found on the Uk in Spain website (www.ukinspain.com) The relevant legislation governing the new order is EU Directive 2004/58/EC of 29th April 2004 which covers the rights of EU, EEA (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), Swiss citizens and their family members to move and reside freely within the EU. written by Pete Woodall of Woody’s Los Boliches

If a loved one died in Spain, would you know what to do? Ask yourself these questions: Who would you call? Do you know the Spanish system? Would you be able to deal with the Spanish Law and Customs? Would family members have time to attend the funeral, which is usually held within 48 hours? Upfront payment is usually required in the region of €4000, would this amount be readily available? nglish TV is a bit of a novelty to me. Recently I gained access to some, and like a stranger in a foreign country, I did some exploring and found something rather disturbing. I found Jesus – or better said lots of Jesus’s, and I am not referring to the gospel channel!
Director: Stephen Soderburgh Starring: Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey Soderburgh turns his lens on the faux glamorous world of male strippers so don’t expect an American version of The Full Monty. The plot is semiautobiographical – star Tatum (in a role far removed from Dear John) spent some time strutting his stuff as a young man. In this he plays Magic Mike, who in a perfect world would prefer to create bespoke furniture. But the banks won’t finance him, so he decides to put his handsome face and terrific
six pack and buns to good use by making some fast cash while he considers his career options. On the face of it the glamour of dancing for frenzied women keen to slip dollar bills into your G string seems to offer everything a young man could want, and Mike takes the opportunity of mentoring young Adam (Alex Pettyfer) in the art of stripping for fun, making easy money and easy women. But Mike is fast approaching 30 and it’s time
to re-evaluate his shallow life. He is offered a partnership by strip club boss Dallas (McConaughey) but has to ask himself whether this is how he wants to spend the rest of his life. McConaughey turns in a scene stealing performance, all bouncy curls, rakishly
tilted cowboy hat and leather chaps – continuing his recent trajectory away from the sardonic, dimpled love interest of many a romcom. A bit of lightweight fun with some soul searching to make up for the fact this is basically a movie about some very fit male bodies – a perfect hen night outing.

Upon discovering that a psychotic serial killer has been using his writings as inspiration, legendary author Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack) joins forces with a bright, young Baltimore detective to catch the maniac and end his reign of terror. Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) was investigating a vicious murder when he realized the crime scene bore a striking resemblance to a mystery story that was just published in the local newspaper. The author of that ominous tale was Edgar Allan Poe, a brilliant young writer whose status as a social outcast catches the attention of the diligent detective. Shortly after Poe is questioned by the authorities, detectives
Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret stars Anna Paquin as Lisa, an emotionally immature, overly-articulate 17-year-old Manhattanite with an emotionally carnivorous actress for a mother and a distant businessman father who lives on the West Coast with his new, younger wife. Whilst dealing with all the regular stress in her life; including a nice guy with a crush on her, a jerk who she calls when she's ready to lose her virginity, and her mother picking fights with her so that she can get emotionally worked up enough to be marvelous on stage. Preparing to spend the summer at a ranch with Dad, she is seeking the proper cowboy hat when she spots one atop bus
stumble upon yet another murder scene that seems to have been inspired by the author's morbid writings. Convinced that the killer will once again use Poe's writings as a springboard to murder, Detective Fields recruits the reclusive author to help piece together a pattern to the crimes and stop the madman before he can strike again.
ow, granted I have N been out of the UK for many years, and though I do not watch UK TV, I do know about “Britain’s Got Talent”, “The X-Factor”, etc – so, when I came across “Superstar” (if you’ve seen it) you can understand my confusion – what is going on? et me explain, Ltalent “Superstar” is like the show for all singing rejects from all the decentish talent shows out there. But if this wasn’t bad enough – yes , it gets worse – the prize isn’t a record deal (which is what these contestants really want), it’s to star as Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” tour. Ugh! Personally, I’m not a big musical fan, I did see “Rent” on Broadway, and that was enough for me, but “Jesus Christ Superstar” – no, I’d rather be dragged through a bush backwards than see that. ere is my confusion. I H thought Andrew Lloyd Webber was, I don’t know,
driver Jason “Maretti” Berstone (Mark Ruffalo). Chasing the bus in the hopes of boarding it and talking to him, he is distracted long enough to run a red light and strike a pedestrian (Alison Janney). Margaret comforts the woman whose life quickly ebbs away and with that the movie is launched.
smart? Had a good musical ear, or something. So, why isn’t he holding auditions like a normal theatre person? Instead of inflicting a bunch of dodgy characters upon innocent people, in a sort of fake “X factor”? t’s bad enough that these Ikaraoke “Jesus’s” are mediocre singers at best, it’s kind of insulting Jesus, if you think about it. When any of these guys start to
perform I do say: “Oh Lord”, but I don’t mean it as a good word. I don’t quite understand what they are looking for in a Jesus, but these guys are in all shapes, sizes and colours. ouldn´t it be more W sensible to audition men who could sing and resemble Jesus? None of these guys can sing, one of them looks like a fat blonde girl (with a beard), another looks like a priest, the other a thug and the other is of African descent. Hence my confusion! raises the question Tmadeofhis how these “Jesus’s” it on to the show in the first place – that is a “miracle” in itself. But how they stay on the show – well that one, I can answer, it’s down to the judges. Whatever happens on stage they all say: “that was so good”, so I keep saying: “Were we watching the same thing?”. The judges must be tone-deaf. The panel consists of Andrew Lloyd Webber (of course, it’s going to be his production), Dawn French (hmm…yeah, I don’t get it either), Melanie C (hardly a great solo career, after the Spice Girls) and Jason Donovan! Correct me if I am wrong, but the only music stuff (at least that I recall) Donovan ever did was, “Especially for you” with Kylie, the very lame “Too many broken hearts” (Oh dear, I’m showing my age) and let’s not forget “Any Dream will Do”. I am guessing he got the job because of his role in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat”. f Simon Cowell had any Iprobably say in this, well, he’d just cancel the show. As for me, it’s things like this that keep me away from UK TV. Now, where is the remote?

If you feel that you have been walking around in circles then things are going to change drastically over the next few weeks. You will know where you are going and actually feel as though you are getting somewhere. Even if someone else has the upper hand you are well able to negotiate your way through to create what you want. You are born with pure instinctual energy to express your desires with strength and passion. Walk forward with confidence. You are currently rising up and out of a place that you are happy to leave behind. It has been a difficult and demanding week with circumstances leaving you feeling tired and run down. As your energy starts to recuperate you will gain a sense of positivity and the passion in your heart will start to ignite once more. Faith will resume and you will realise that actually the people you were judging are not that bad after all. The present moment is what matters to you right now, all of your thoughts are concentrated on it and where you go from here. The things that you value most will be important to you and in your mind a new sense of priorities is emerging. You probably have a stronger urge than usual to make a difference. Get in touch this week with your bottom line baseline needs and values and make conscious choices one step at a time. You are working hard yourself to put certain taxing themes to rest which inevitably involves coming toe to toe with your truth, requiring you to reflect on your life with a naked honesty in order for the unwelcome not to be repeated. An emotional fresh start and new chapter is ahead. You may need to have an honest conversation with someone to maintain parity especially if things have been one sided – make sure you are not taken for granted. I have said it before and will say it again you cannot expect a different outcome or experience if you continue to go about things in the same way. You are being encouraged to think outside of the box, to take a risk with your feelings and a leap of faith. Something you initiated is up for review and there is a necessary reflection period about how to best bring it forward. Perhaps you are retracing some steps that will uncover hidden potentials. Something that you were cautious or worried about is starting to look a lot less daunting now. You could be looking at the bigger picture and not feeling so put on the spot about it. Time heals. With this also comes the ability to be objective and to allow things to happen spontaneously and naturally as there is only so much you can control. There could be the chance to re-open an old book or re-consider a previous decision.
This sticky banana and caramel meringue takes just minutes to prepare. A delicious and rich combination, try this easy and decadent dessert today.
Banana and Caramel Meringues Ingredients: • • • •
(Serves 4
85g caster sugar 250ml double cream 2 large bananas 4 ready-made meringue nests
or 8 small meringues
Directions 1. Put the caster sugar and 2 tablespoons water in a saucepan and cook over a medium heat, stirring, for 30 seconds –1 minute or until the sugar has dissolved. 2. Bring to the boil over a high heat and boil for 4–5 minutes until the syrup has turned a medium caramel colour. 3. Remove from the heat and stir in 6 tablespoons of the cream, being very careful as it may sputter a bit. 4. Return the pan to a low heat and cook, stirring, for 1–2 minutes until any
hard lumps of caramel have dissolved, then keep warm over a very low heat. 5. Put the remaining cream in a large bowl and whip, using an electric mixer, until soft peaks form. Peel and slice the bananas. 6. Put the meringue nests on four plates and spoon the whipped cream over them. Top with the banana slices, drizzle with the sauce and serve. Alternatively, crumble the meringues into four glasses, layer with cream, bananas and sauce and serve.

Reducing salt 'cuts Drug-resistant cancer risk' HIV 'on increase' Cutting back on salty foods such as bacon, bread and breakfast cereals could reduce the risk of developing stomach cancer, according to the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). Too much salt is bad for blood pressure and can lead to heart disease and stroke, but it can also cause cancer. The recommended daily limit is 6g, about a level teaspoonful, but the WCRF said people were
eating 8.6g a day. Eating too much salt is not all about sprinkling it over fish and chips or Sunday lunch, the vast majority is already inside food. That is why the WCRF has called for a "traffic-light" system for food labelling – red for high, amber for medium and green for low. However, this has proved controversial with many food manufacturers and supermarkets preferring other ways of
labelling food. In the UK, the WCRF said one-inseven stomach cancers would be prevented if people kept to daily guidelines, but Cancer Research UK said this figure could be even higher. A WCRF spokesman said stomach cancer is difficult to treat successfully because most cases are not caught until the disease is well-established.
Drug-resistant HIV has been increasing in parts of sub-Saharan Africa over the last decade, according to a review of studies on 26,000 untreated HIV-positive people in developing countries. The researchers, from the World Health Organization (WHO) and University College London (UCL) found the most rapid increase in drug resistance occurred in East Africa, at 29% per year. In Southern Africa, it was 14% per year. There was no change in resistance over time in Latin America and in West and Central Africa. They said resistance could build up if people fail to stick to drug regimes, and because monitoring could be poor. The researchers said that without continued and increased national and international efforts, rising HIV drug resistance could jeopardise a decade-long trend of decreasing
Gene therapy nears approval Europe is about to approve a gene therapy for the first time, in what would be a landmark moment for the field. Gene therapies alter a patient's DNA to treat inherited diseases passed from parent to child.
The European Medicines Agency has recommended a therapy for a rare genetic disease, known as lipoprotein lipase deficiency, which affects one in a million people. They have damaged copies of a gene which is essential for breaking down fat. It leads to fat building up in the blood, abdominal pain and life-threatening pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). In one gene therapy trial a US teenager died, and other patients have developed leukaemia.

e Dark Knight Rises in the money stakes … despite the horrific shootings at the premier in Denver last Friday The Dark Knight Rises earned $160.9m (£103.7m) over the weekend, making it the third-largest opening ever. But the final instalment of director Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy came in slightly below expectations following the mass shooting at a Colorado screening of the film. The Dark Knight Rises still recorded the biggest 2-D opening ever, ahead of its 2008 predecessor The Dark Knight. It also gives the movie the third-largest opening after the 3-D films Marvel Avengers Assemble, with $207.4m (£133.6m), and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2,
with $169.2m (£109m). Despite its impressive $160.9m opening, The Dark Knight Rises had been expected to earn between £170m (£109.5m) and $200m (£128.8m) at the North American box office, which includes the United States and Canada. But Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for Hollywood.com, said the film's opening was "extremely impressive given the tragic events that unfolded on Friday. Clearly, The Dark Knight Rises was on everyone's minds," he said. "I think the American public showed they were not going to be scared away from the movie theatre by the actions of a lunatic."
Come along and meet us On Saturday, people from The News will be at the La Trocha 1st British National Day to help fly the flag of all things British. Kym Wickham, Geoff Heading, Abigail and Anne Tyler will all be there so you’ll be able to talk to us about how we make the paper, and tell us what you like and dislike about it, what you’d like to see in it if we don’t have it and what you think is a waste of time. Also, you can find out how The News Helpdesk can help you if you’ve ever got any problems with phones, councils, electricity companies, IBI, car tax, changing of ownership and a whole host of other things. This is your opportunity to let us know what you need – no promises we can do it, but at least we’ll listen and, if we can do it, we will! I was delivering the papers recently and upon
handing one to a lady in a café she said: “Oh, good, I love this paper and I’ve got to see what that editor has to say for herself this week. She’s great... really tells it how it is!” Now, they do say that if you hear someone else’s conversation, you won’t hear anything good about yourself but it was lovely to hear that The News is so popular – borne out by many people we meet, even when they don’t know who we are, and I said to her:”I’m so glad to hear that, because that’s me you’re talking about,” at which point we all had a good laugh and agreed it was a good thing she hadn’t said something horrid! Anyway, La Trocha is on the A355, the road from Coin to Cartama, just outside Coin so pop along and say hello to us and all the other Brits that will be represented there. written by Kym Wickham
Sony, Fox, Disney, Paramount, Universal and Lionsgate joined Dark Knight Rises distributor Warner Bros in publicly withholding their usual weekend revenue reports until now. They did so out of respect for the victims and their families after the mass shooting that left 12 dead and 58 wounded at a midnight screening of the movie in Aurora, Colorado. Nolan issued a statement after the shootings, saying: "Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community.
"I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them
The Dark Knight Rises
and their families."
(£13.1m).
Following behind The Dark Knight Rises in the No 2 spot was Ice Age: Continental Drift, an animated Fox film that dropped 56% in its second weekend to $20.4m
The Amazing Spider-Man, a reboot of the series starring Andrew Garfield, earned $10.9m (£7m) during its third weekend at the box office, to take the No 3 position.
Simon Barker arrested in UK Ward dies The son of actor Ronnie Barker, Adam Barker fled the UK in 2004 after being arrested in 2003 by Scotland Yard’s paedophile unit.

More recently known as Sir Monty in television’s Judge John Deed, he had also appeared in The Three Musketeers, and as the main role in Young Winston and played the father of Supergirl in a 1980’s film. The 44-year-old was arrested during a crackdown by UK police on internet child pornography during Operation Ore after it was found that he had 1,200 indecent images of children on his home computer and was thought to have fled to France. In 2005, after his father had died, police said they would allow him to attend the funeral on condition that he handed himself in. He did not. However, he has now attended an interview at a West London
police station and has been arrested on suspicion of making indecent images of children and has been charged with five child pornography offences. He was due to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on Tuesday
afternoon but it was not clear why he had returned to the UK. He is the youngest son of Ronnie Barker, one of Britain's best loved comic actors, who died five years ago.

“THE NEWS”WANTS TO HEAR YOUR VIEWS Send letters to the editor as part of an e-mail text to editorial@thenewsonline.es
Mike Hamence I enjoy Ken Campbell's 'Star Gazing' articles, he must put a lot of thought and hard work into them. To readers who have no idea where 'Los Boliches' or the various spots in Fuengirola or Benalmadena he mentions as examples of distance comparison in his 'Size of the Universe' (July 11th) are however, these examples were parochial.
Ed Malcolm I was very interested to read your advert about Kimbridge Farm having lived in the general area before coming to Spain. But I would like to know why the advert ? It's a bit of a long way to go for either the meal or to buy any of the food.
Sabinillas So I hope he will permit my thoughts. Some time ago American scientists speculated that the Universe was 'Ten to fifteen billion years old'. Apart from tossing five billion years over their shoulders like apple cores, to someone who taught Maths in an English Grammar School sixty-odd years ago, their speculation is a fallacy for a 'billion' was a 'million
I was going to say “What in God’s name have ITV been thinking of?” but that would only add insult to injury. I am not a particularly religious person by any manner or means but ITV’s relatively new “Superstar” programme just beggars belief. There is Amanda Holden compering in her usual gushing manner about the acts that are trying to get the part as Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new version of Jesus Christ Superstar
Given that the difference is '10 to the minus something' minus 'ten to the minus something else' it's astronomical (pun intended). Here on the outer rim of the Fuengi-roh-lah cultural orbit however, it matters little.
Alhaurin el Grande I am a great fan of the paper especially Muriel Pilkington. Keep up the good work! Editor says: Many people at this time of year go back to the UK and a lot to that area of the country so we thought, “why not?” Also, Ian used to be the chef at
James Lee
squared'; now the Yanks have forced on the world at large that a 'billion' is a 'thousand millions'.
Leslie’s Bistro up in Coin (now Lainey’s with new management – good it is too!) so we know him and his cooking and can recommend it to our readers if they happen to be in the area. I will pass on your comment about Muriel’s column to her – people either love her or hate her – at least she’s never described as boring!
Torreblanca but, please, have a bit of respect for all the devout Christians that are out there. Shouting into a microphone “Who will be your next Jesus?” as the voting begins is not really on. If it was some talent show trying to find the next musical Mohammed – and let me say right now that I cannot imagine Muslims even thinking of shoving Mohammed in any kind of mujsical production – there would be an outscry, together with Jihads popping up all over the place. It just wouldn’t happen. But with the normally fairly tolerant Christians, this is just going too far. Apart from anything else, the so-called talent is appalling (has anyone else thought that the guy with the long blonde hair is the same one that was voted off Britain’s got talent recently?) and surely they could have found someone with at least a modicum of a good voice. Poor Andrew must be holding his head in amazement at the end of each of these shows – maybe his ears bleed with the sheer horror of what he’s been hearing even! Needless to say, I have absolutely had enough of this utter rubbish and will not be watching any more of it ...
anyone know what BBC has to offer at the same time?!
Editor says: Have a look at Amy Thomas’s column on the Magazine page this week. You are not the only one who is upset with this particular programme and we’ve had quite a few emails of complaint about it. I watched it once and vowed never to watch it again. What on earth was Ms Holden thinking of? Is she really that desperate to get her face on the telly or is this the real “her”? And the last series where they found the Jesus character for the last production was carried out in a totally different, and far superior way. Such a shame, but I shall also be looking to other channels – you can have a look at the alternatives on our TV pages 24 & 25.

e Lunar X If you have binoculars or a small telescope, then tonight (Wednesday 25th July) will be the perfect time to try and spot the mysterious Lunar X.
L
ook at the Moon tonight and you will see that the right-hand side is lit up while the lefthand side is still in shadow. The Moon is said to be in its first quarter stage. The second quarter is when it is full Moon, the third quarter is when the opposite sides are in light and darkness and finally the last quarter is a new Moon when the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun. The line between dark and light is called the Terminator (no, it is nothing to do with Arnold Schwarzenegger!) and it is along this line that the best features of the Moon can be seen with a telescope.
T
he mountains, craters, and valleys create long shadows on the Moon making them stand out more. Deep craters are still in darkness as the Sun has not risen above their edges and the tops of high mountains can be spotted in the darkened side of the Moon as the sunlight catches their peaks. Then if you observe the Moon over a period of a few hours, more and more of the crater or mountain will become illuminated as the Sun rises higher in the lunar sky.
A
nd because there is no atmosphere on the Moon to scatter the light around like on Earth then the difference between the light and the shadowed areas is dramatic from pitch black to dazzling white along a very narrow line. And this is where the Lunar X comes in. As the Terminator creeps across the face of the Moon from right to left then different features slowly become visible as they catch the light. It was only in 1974 that someone happened to notice that at an exact period during the Moon’s first quarter a combination of light and shadows combined to form an X shape just slightly to the left of the Terminator edge on the darkened side of the Moon.
T
he X shape is created by three craters whose raised edges touch each other. Two of the craters are side by side whilst the third is above and directly between the other two. The raised edges of the craters are at least 800-1000 feet above the floor of the craters so they catch the sunlight while the surrounding area is still in darkness and so appear to form a distinctive X shape emerging from the darkness. But the effect only lasts for about four hours until the Sun has risen
enough to illuminate the whole area. And tonight is a perfect opportunity for you to spot this amazing anomaly for yourself.
N
ow, it is small, so don’t go thinking that the X will suddenly appear as an apparition of biblical proportions on the face of the Moon. You will need binoculars or a telescope to see it and it will take some serious eyeball work to spot it as the whole area only covers about 50 square miles. So be patient and hopefully you should spot it. Begin by looking very carefully along the Terminator just below halfway down the face of the Moon. The upper part of the X should begin to appear at 22.36 and will gradually become more distinct as the evening progresses. I would guess that around midnight is when it will be at its most distinct.
T
he Fuengirola Astronomy society are holding a special observing session near Mijas tonight especially to observe the Lunar X. If you would like to join them contact Lee Osborne at info@astronomycostadelsol.com. Lee and the other members will be using very powerful telescopes to get a good view of the X as it appears and then gradually fades away as the sunlight swamps it.
L
ee will also be showing other features along the Moon’s Terminator edge, including the Apollo 11 landing site in the Sea of Tranquillity, various mountains, valleys and the massive crater Tycho with its huge streaks that was formed when a giant asteroid crashed into the Moon many millions of years ago.
X
marks the spot!
Enjoy your Stargazing!

New Vauxhall Adam city car The new Vauxhall Adam will be available in 'almost unlimited visual combinations', according to its designers. Rivals such as the Audi A1, Citroen DS3, Fiat 500 and Mini also allow buyers to choose from a wide range of exterior and interior colours, but Vauxhall designer Mark Adams – yes that really is his name – said: 'No other car in this segment can be individualised as much as the Adam. It's unlikely that you'll find two identical Adams out there.' A starting price of around £11,000 is likely.
It’s Alonso again as Vettel is punished for illegal overtake Having secured pole position in the rain at Hockenheim, Alonso showed he could be just as quick in the dry to secure his third win of the season in the German Grand Prix. Despite running a lap down, Hamilton was lapping quicker than Alonso and Vettel who were ahead on track and unlapped himself from Vettel which allowed Button to close on the Red Bull driver. Button then pitted first for the second and final time and when Vettel dived in a lap later, he resumed just as Button came round turn one. Carrying more speed, Button was able to sweep ahead into second place and did his best to chase Alonso down before starting to suffer with his tyres in the closing laps. That allowed Vettel to challenge on the
penultimate lap having activated his DRS on the
run to the hairpin, with the German trying to go round the outside on the righthander. Putting four-wheels off the track to complete the move, Vettel moved back into second in a move that left Button far from impressed. Alonso however was too far up the road for Vettel to challenge, with the points leader securing his third victory of 2012 to strengthen his advantage at the head of the title race. Sebastian Vettel was later stripped of his
podium finish in the German Grand Prix after being hit with a time penalty for his move on
Maria De Villota returns home Marussia test driver Maria de Villota has returned home to Spain after the accident in which she lost her right eye. De Villota was in a hospital for more than two weeks and had two operations after suffering severe head and facial injuries when she crashed into a team truck during a test at an airfield on July 3rd. Marussia said that the 32-year-old De Villota returned home on Friday. 'Maria left Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge on July 20th and returned directly to Spain,' said the team in a statement.

Having looked at the incident, the stewards elected to give Vettel a postrace drive-through penalty which saw 20 seconds added to his finishing time. As a result, Vettel dropped from second to fifth in the final standings, with Kimi Raikkonen promoted onto the podium.

Jenson Button in the closing stages. The Red Bull driver took second on the penultimate lap with a move around the outside into the hairpin but ran off track on the exit of the corner in order to make the move stick. Button was clearly angered by the move as was heard over the team radio, with McLaren appealing to the stewards about the manner in which Vettel had taken the position.

MotoGP: Hector Barbera to miss both US rounds after leg break Hector Barbera could miss both American rounds of the MotoGP World Championship after Doctors predicted a 4-6 week recovery time before he will be fit to race again. The Pramac Ducati rider fractured his left tibia and fibula in an unspecified 'training incident' on Saturday. The Spaniard, who claimed his first MotoGP front row start last time at Mugello, has now undergone 'successful' surgery to have a titanium plate and screws inserted into his left leg. The operation was conducted at Barcelona's
Instituto Universitario USP Dexeus by specialist surgeon Doctor Xavier Mir, who gave the following statement: “The surgery had good results. We are confident that Héctor will be able to leave the hospital in 48 hours and can begin light physical activity in seven days. “It is difficult to say how long the post surgery rehabilitation will take. “We need to evaluate the progress of the patient, but I think that we can reasonably think that he will [be] able to run a race in 4 or 6 weeks, according to his feedback."

The Spaniard was able to keep his place at the head of the field when the lights went out with a perfect start, and quickly set about establishing an advantage out front, although he was never able to pull out too much of a lead over the chasing pack. Having managed to see off the challenge of Michael Schumacher through the early laps, Sebastian Vettel cemented his place as Alonso's closest challenger through the first part of the race as the leading pair gradually eased away from the battle behind. Button however was also bringing himself into contention for victory, with his chances aided by teammate Lewis Hamilton, who was running well down the order having been forced to pit with a puncture caused by debris from the front wing of Felipe Massa after the Ferrari was involved in a clash at the start.

Ernie Els steals the Claret Jug Ernie Els had been saying all week that he felt something special was going to happen for him in a tournament he's extremely fond of being held on a golf course he loves. Five shots behind Australian Adam Scott at the turn and still four shots back with three holes to play, the almost unbelievable happened for Els as he birdied the last hole at Royal Lytham & St Annes and won the British Open when Scott finished with four consecutive bogeys. Els was the only player to break par of the last five groups to tee off, and shot a final-round 2-under-par 68 to finish at 7 under, just one shot ahead of Scott, who led by four as he stood on the 1st tee. Els made four birdies on the back nine, the final one from 18 feet on the final hole to win his fourth major and first since capturing this championship in 2002. "Sorry," Els said while

holding the Claret Jug, looking at the 32-year-old Australian, whose final bogey gave him a 75. "You're a great player, a great friend of mine. I feel very fortunate. You're going to win many of these." Scott tried so hard to win this his first major and seemed in total control all week as he tied the course record with a 64 in the first round, shot 67 in the second and 68 in the third. After a birdie at the 14th, Scott was at 10 under and four shots clear of the field, but a bogey at 15 after a poor drive, and a missed 3-footer for par on the 16th left Scott looking vulnerable for the first time, and when he failed to get up and down from the thick rough at the back of
the 17th green it all came down to the final hole. Scott from the 18th tee then proceeded to find one of the many bunkers that protect the Lytham Course. After laying up from the bunker and hitting his third
to 8 feet, Scott was left with one final attempt to take it to a play-off but his putt slipped by on the left side. "I had it in my hands with four to go," Scott said. "I managed to hit a poor shot on each of the closing four holes. Look, I played so beautifully for most of the week. I shouldn't let
this bring me down." Of the other protaganist’s Graeme McDowell, who played in the final group with Scott, never really looked like he would mount a challenge and the less said about Tiger Woods the better. After walking the fairways all week with a face like a smacked a**e, Woods also fell away in the final round shooting a 73, which included a triple bogey 7 on the par-4 sixth hole. Woods knocked his second into a greenside bunker, left his third in the bunker, blasted out on the second try and threeputted.McDowell closed with a 5-over 75.

Steyn bags five as England slump England were dismissed twice on a pitch which gave minimal help to the bowlers, while the Proteas lost only two wickets in piling up a massive 2-637 in their only innings, with man-of-the-match Hashim Amla hitting a South African record of 311 not out. It was an especially surprising margin because England were on top on the first day when they scored 3-267. Dale Steyn was South Africa's last-day start, taking three wickets in 16 deliveries with the second new ball as England were bowled out for 240 on the final day. The fast bowler finished with 5-56 to justify
his ranking as the world's leading Test bowler. The win took South Africa a big step towards earning the No.1 ranking in Test cricket which they will achieve if they defeat current No.1 England in the series. England captain Andrew Strauss gave credit to South Africa. “We were outplayed in the last four days of the game. We set the game up well on the first day. South Africa used the conditions to their advantage on day two and they never let us back into the game.” But Strauss pledged that England would bounce back.

Powell. "Hopefully, because there aren't other sports taking place that day, the media interest will be unprecedented." Birmingham City forward Eniola Aluko, who started a warm-up fixture against Sweden last Friday, believes the timing of the match gives her team an opportunity to inspire a generation of talent. Bag boy Carlos Tevez blasted Carlos Tevez caddying during the final round of the Open has been described as 'absolute madness' by Royal and Ancient Club championship committee chairman Jim McArthur. Manchester City striker Tevez caused a stir when he carried the bag for his Argentinian compatriot Andres Romero on Sunday at Royal Lytham. Golf fan Tevez, a 13-handicapper, admitted he could not give Romero any advice but enjoyed the experience nonetheless.
Wiggins wins Tour de France in style
Sporting SPOTLIGHT
It was a rare sight at the Tour de France, the yellow jersey holder charging down the Champs Elysees at the head of the peloton, trying to set up a teammate for a sprint victory on the final stage.
OlympICS 2012
I have been a follower of pro cycling since the age of 14 as I saved to buy my first racing bike, doing my paper round and day dreaming that one day I would compete in the Tour de France, like my hero back then Tom Simpson. I never dreamed that in my lifetime I would ever see a British cyclist and team winning the Tour de France. Bradley Wiggins is now one of the greatest British cyclists of all time (I would say British sportsman but don’t want to upset the

Froome and Mark Cavendish, Wiggins’s racing year has been all about building up to this Tour, with victories at three of the other big tours, Paris-Nice, Tour of Romandie and the Criterium du Dauphine – where he wore the leader’s yellow jersey for 15 of the 21 racing days. In France the Maillot Jaune was on his shoulders for 2,064km of the 3,497km that were ridden. And like former winners Lance
Armstrong, Miguel Indurain and Greg LeMond his winning time trial rides proved pivotal. And to top off a magnificent Tour for Team Sky Mark Cavendish won on the Champs Elysees for the fourth consecutive year after that lead out out by Wiggins, (another first at the tour) and Ed Boasson Hagen. Cavendish having sacrificed some opportunities for more stage wins along the way by helping his team mate protect the yellow jersey, Wiggins was all too happy to pay him back over the final kilometres of the race – normally a time when the winner is merely cruising along and already receiving congratulations from other riders. This was the team’s seventh stage win of the Tour. The French media have dubbed Bradley Wiggins 'Le Gentleman'; L'Equipe has even hailed "the most famous rouflaquettes (sideburns) since Elvis
Presley". Something I am sure Monsieur Wiggins will find very, very amusing when he finally gets round to reading of his exploits. British fans cheered along the Champs Elysees. As he stood proud on the podium in yellow for the crowning moment of his illustrious career. The 32year-old was then left open jawed with the glasscracking, ear-perforating sounds of Lesley Garrett butchering the national anthem, dressed in a costanot-a-lot Union flag.Didn't Wiggo always say that it wasn't over until the fat lady sang? "We're just going to draw the raffle now," Wiggins said in classic Wiggins style afterwards when handed the mic’, making light of the situation before warning the jubilant crowd "don't get too drunk". The track cycling star is Britain's most successful active Olympian, and hopes to add to his four gold medals in London. The 36year-old becomes the first cyclist to carry the flag at an opening ceremony, though he was Britain's flag-bearer at the closing ceremony in Beijing four years ago. He said: "I'm absolutely delighted and honoured to have been voted as the flag bearer for Team GB. Olympic torch visits EastEnders The Olympic torch visited the fictional London borough of Walford when it appeared in a special live section of BBC soap EastEnders on Monday. Viewers saw Billy Mitchell, played by Perry Fenwick, carry the torch past some of E20's most famous TV landmarks, including the Queen Vic pub. Speaking ahead of the show, Fenwick said it was "quite terrifying". Nineteen cameras were on Albert Square to capture the 31 regular cast members and 11 children involved.
