NATIONAL NEWS - LONGEST IN HISTORY WITH HIGHEST NUMBER OF ACCUSED

Record-breaking corruption trial finally over Juan Antonio Roca, the former Marbella urban planning adviser said to be the mastermind behind a huge corruption network, was one of the 17 people allowed to have their final say on the last day of the so-called Malaya corruption case on Monday. The trial started on September 27th, 2010, making it the longest corruption trial in Spanish legal history. It is also the trial with the highest number of accused – 86. There were 95 originally, but charges against nine people were dropped. It is the case that has also produced the highest number of documents in the uncovering of the systematic looting of a local council between August 2003 and March 2006. Roca asked the court why paedophile Santiago del Valle who murdered 5year-old Mari Luz Cortes in Huelva in January 2008 was given a sentence of 22 years, “while I face 30 years in prison which means I will end my life there”. The prosecution claims Roca made a fortune of more than €200 million instructing Marbella councillors to approve

urban planning resolutions that favoured the people who were giving him backhanders. Roca also said he “deeply regretted the harm done to Marbella and its residents through their association with this case” and complained that the authorities had “attempted to re-write my past”. Roca has denied any wrongdoing. The other “star” in the show, former Marbella mayor Julian Muñoz, accused of accepting bribes from Roca, complained the “the whole ,of Spain believes I am a thief”, adding that he had never been condemned for taking money, forgetting that he is appealing a bribery charge against him in another case. He accused the prosecution of wanting to see “his grandson pay for the alleged sins of his grandfather”. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Just in case you hadn’t worked it out, if I get bad service or goods I do something about it! However, I am also the first to say when I get good service, goods or, when I have had bad service, it has been rectified. As some of you know, I was delayed at Gatwick airport for seven hours the other week and had a seat just 15” wide (my husband couldn’t get his rear end even into it to sit down!) so, on the Monday I complained to Monarch and got very short shrift from someone in customer “services” who basically told me I’d get no compensation and to go away. I hadn’t actually asked for compensation so was somewhat taken aback and asked for her supervisor’s details. I emailed the supervisor, a lady called Charlene Cane Kane who emailed me back asking for a phone number for me. Well, talk about chalk and cheese .... Ms Kane was charming, agreed with me that they knew about the seats and are doing their best to rectify the situation and has arranged a voucher for future flights for me. now this is what customer service departments should be all about. The way the customer is treated a lot of the time these days beggars belief but what a breath of fresh air Charlene and Monarch have been. Keep up the good work and, next time someone is horrid I may very well suggest they get in touch with you to re-train them!

National News Until the Puerta del Sol became the headquarters for the 15-M protest movement last year, offices located on the square made a little extra money renting out the odd balcony for the New Year’s Eve celebrations. The media used to ask the hotels. offices and private apartments in the area for permission to cover other events going on in the square and there was never a whisper about money exchanging hands. Now big protests mean big bucks. Depending on the desirability of the location, it now costs between €150 and €500 an hour to rent a balcony these days, according to El Pais in English. That’s when the balconies are booked in

advance. It still works out cheaper than renting an office full-time. Rents in Madrid are high and get higher the closer you get to Puerta del Sol, which is the very heart of the city. Reporters and photographers also get together to share balconies to cut down costs. The owners don’t complain about sharing, as long as they get the hourly rate they’ve stipulated. TV stations have an advantage – they can trade balconies for publicity. The

balcony owners are looking forward to the hot autumn promised by the trade unions – all protests in the capital have to start or end in Puerta del Sol. Spontaneous protests are also becoming more frequent, and calls to meet in Sol spread like wildfire on social networks. People who sought to rent premises there when they only asked for €1,700 a month must be kicking themselves – it probably costs double that to rent now, and climbing.

Rajoy and Griñan finally meet

Junta de Andalucia premier Jose Antonio Griñan requested a meeting with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to ask him to call a meeting of regional premiers but did not receive a reply. The two men finally got together at the PM’s official residence, the Moncloa Palace, on Sunday. Despite their widely different views about just about everything, Griñan said afterwards that it had been a very cordial meeting during which he had promised his “cooperation

Briton jailed for 19 years A court in Elche, Alicante, sentenced a jilted Briton to 19 years in jail on Monday for stabbing his former girlfriend to death after she dumped him.

The sentence is just one year short of the maximum jail term prosecutors were demanding. Last month, a jury found Alan Daulby guilty of stabbing Irishwoman Avril Flanagan, 20, to death at his flat on the Costa Blanca on May 29th, 2009. He was convicted of knifing her 47 times around the head, neck, chest, arms and legs and of fleeing after hiding her body under his sofa in an attempt to clean up the murder scene.

confused her with an intruder after binging on drink and drugs. He said he panicked when he woke up to find her dead. She had been his girlfriend until a week earlier. Judge Gracia Serrano said in an 18-page ruling released on Monday: "The number of stab wounds Avril received was very high. The majority of them weren't either fatal or necessary for Alan Daulby to fulfil his intention of killing Avril. He did not therefore just commit an evil crime. He also committed other equally intentioned wrongdoing by

Franco monument to make money for government The charge of €5 to visit the Valley of the Fallen is expected to bring in a revenue of more than €2 million a year for the government. The monument – built by Franco to honour the people killed on both sides in the Civil War – re-opened in June after being closed for nearly three years for renovation works. Despite being closed to the public, some 500,000 people a year have been visiting it. Franco is still buried there, although a committee of experts set up to study the future of the monument has recommended that his remains be re-buried alongside his wife in a cemetery near El Pardo

Palace, where they lived for the duration of the dictatorship. The committee said the remains of Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera, the founder of the fascist Falange who is buried next to Franco, could stay because he was executed

by the Republicans in November 1936 and can therefore be classified as a civil war victim. Some elements on the Left, notably the Communistdominated Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) want the monument to be razed to the ground.

Aid workers evacuated Twelve Spaniards, two French nationals and an Italian arrived in Madrid in a military plane on Sunday, after Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo announced on Saturday that Spain was evacuating all its aid workers and three other foreign nationals from refugee camps in Tindouf, western Algeria, because of "growing insecurity". Earlier this month three European aid workers seized from a refugee camp near Tindouf were released

by a rebel group. The group said it was an offshoot of alQaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). Sr Garcia-Margallo said the decision had been taken after reviewing "wellfounded evidence of a serious increase in insecurity in the region". He said that the north of neighbouring Mali had been "converted into a platform for terrorism". Northern Mali was seized by Islamist and Tuareg rebels after a coup in March. An uneasy alliance

between the two has since collapsed, leaving al-Qaeda Islamists in control of all three of the region's main cities – Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal. Thousands of people have fled the region and regional bloc Ecowas has announced plans to send 3,000 troops to intervene. Sr Garcia-Margallo said Spain would be willing to support an Ecowas mission in the region, but did not elaborate on what form that support might take.

PP politician charged with murder The Cuban government is to charge Angel Carromero, a spokesman for the Partido Popular’s New Generations group, with murder. He was driving the car which crashed in Cuba’s Granma province on July 22nd, killing well-known Cuban dissident Oswaldo Paya and fellow dissident Harold Cespero. The other foreigner in the car, Swedish politician Jens Aron Modig, is to be allowed to go home. Sr Paya’s family insist the car was forced off the road. Sr Carromero appeared in a

video played by the authorities last Friday saying that “No vehicle hit us from behind. I was driving and hit a pot hole, braked lightly. I didn't look at the speed limit. I lost control of the car and don't remember anything more." He also asked the international community to focus on getting him out of Cuba and made a plea for the accident not to be used "for political ends". According the Granma, the Cuban government’s

Embassy warns British holidaymakers British holidaymakers on Spanish roads are being targeted by gangs who prey on hundreds of unwary motorists, the British Embassy has warned. The thieves’ modus operandi include distracting drivers of foreign-registered or rental cars by staging fake accidents or bogus breakdowns. However, the most popular ruse at the moment, according to the embassy, is slashing a tyre when the tourists pull into a service station. When the tyre goes flat after they head back down the highway, somebody pulls in just in front of them offering help while another car pulls in behind to snatch unwatched bags, passports and money while they are distracted changing the tyre. British consulates reported 140 robberies last year just on the AP7 motorway. Thirteen roadside robberies were reported to the Barcelona

N

consulate in the last fortnight alone, but officials said hundreds more probably go unreported because victims only seek consular help if their passports are stolen. In other cases, they go to the local police.

Almost 10,000 forest fires since January From January 1st to July 22nd this year, 9,844 fires have destroyed 112,461 hectares of forest and woodland, according to agriculture ministry figures. of these 3,635 were “real” fires, that is, involving more than one hectare and 19 are classified as “big”, involving more than 500 hectares. last year, there were only five big fires in the same period. This year’s figures do not include the most recent fires in Vilaflor (Tenerife) , la Jonquera (gerona) and Hellin (Murcia).

Australia smashes Hong Kong drug ring Australian police have seized over half a tonne of drugs, including 306kg of crystal methamphetamine – also known as ''ice'' – and 252kg of heroin, worth over half a billion dollars. The haul is the largest seizure of ''ice'' and the third largest seizure of heroin, police said. They also arrested four Hong Kong nationals and three Australian residents in

raids in Sydney on Monday. The raids and arrests followed a year-long investigation. Deputy Commissioner Andrew Colvin told a press conference: “Countless lives would have been affected had this seizure made its way to Australian streets." He said investigations would continue and more arrests could take place.

The investigations into the syndicate began in August 2011 after a tip-off from the US Drug Enforcement Administration, police said. The drugs were found in a shipment of terracotta pots on July 19th. The suspects will face charges for importing and possessing drugs in a Sydney court.

Colorado gunman charged with 142 counts Alleged Colorado cinema gunman James Holmes has been formally charged with 142 criminal counts in one of America's worst mass shootings. He faces 24 counts of murder, two for each of the 12 people killed, and 116 counts of attempted murder, two each for the 58 injured. For each person killed he faces a count of murder with deliberation and one of murder with extreme

indifference. If convicted, the 24-year-old could face the death penalty. He opened fire at random in a crowded movie theatre showing the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora near Denver on July 20th, according to the authorities. The judge had banned cameras from Monday's hearing, so there were no pictures of the defendant, who appeared dazed during his first court

appearance last week. As of Sunday, 10 victims of the shooting remained in hospital, four of them in a critical condition. Court documents filed on Friday by defence lawyers said the suspect had been under the care of a psychiatrist at the University of Colorado Denver, but observers said it is likely that the defendant will plead insanity.

Hotel re-opens New rules for video and airport and computer games refurb underway All computer games sold in the UK will be subject to the Europe-wide Pan European Game Information (PEGI) scheme by which people found selling a 12 certificate to a child under that age could face jail under the stronger rating system.

If you’re planning a trip to St Peter Port in Guernsey this summer you might like to know that the Duke of Richmond hotel, now upgraded to 4-star and owned by the Red Carnation Group, has reopened following a £1.5m stylish and contemporary makeover. It is the sister hotel of Old Government House, the only 5-star property on the island, and to several London establishments, including the Chesterfield in Mayfair and the Reubens, near

Victoria Station. Plus, work is now well under way with a major upgrading of the technical facilities at Guernsey Airport, although the very poor weather during the spring and summer months to date has put the project slightly behind schedule. The £80m project to upgrade the runway, apron and safety areas was due to be completed by May 2014. It is the biggest project ever undertaken at the airport since it first opened in 1939.

Ryanair profits grow plus new bid for airline Dublin based budget airline Ryanair has seen a revenue growth of 11% for the first quarter of 2012 boosted by a 6% increase in the number of passengers even though there has been a 29% fall in like-for-like quarterly profits compared to last year. CEO Michael O’Leary blamed a 27% rise in fuel costs against the same period last year for the fall. Fares rose by an average 4% within the same period. But the company admitted that they would have to curb any major fare increases this year. Mr O’Leary added that the airline was braced for a difficult winter as austerity measures and the Eurozone crisis hit demand.

Ryanair operate more than 1,500 flights a day across 28 countries and is expecting a 1% growth between September and March next year, down from 7% this summer following winter capacity cuts. On a further note, he European Commission has confirmed that it will decide on 29th August whether to permit Ryanair’s latest bid –its third – for Aer Lingus. The first offer in 2006 was blocked by the Commission concerned about competition, while the second attempt, in 2008, was rejected by Aer Lingus’ shareholders. Ryanair has a 29.82% stake in Aer Lingus.

The scheme ends the role of the British Board of Film Censors Classification in rating video games who had, until now provided legally enforceable 15 and 18 certificates but which never had a 12 certificate, leaving the way open for much younger children to legally get their hands on violent games. Culture Minister Ed Vaizey said “The UK has

one of the most dynamic and innovative video games industry in the world, and the games they produce not only entertain millions, but can also foster creativity and educate. Today’s simplification of the ratings system benefits both industry and consumers and will ensure that the millions of games sold in the UK each year are being played by the audiences they were intended for.”

The Video Standards Council will have the power to refuse to grant an agerating for a game if it

includes extreme content, meaning the game could not be legally sold in the UK. The games will have information on the packaging with the agebrief rating and a description of the type of content that led to the rating helping parents decide what is and isn’t appropriate for their family.

Landing banking schemes to face court A High Court Order has ordered the assets of Asset land Investments Inc, trading as Asset Land Worldwide, Equity Services (London) Ltd., and Asset Land Investment PLC to be frozen after the companies were found to be suspected of a land banking scam exposed by a Sky News investigation. Three individuals have also had their personal assets frozen by the order and the companies and individuals have also been prevented from selling plots of land on particular sites in Stansted, Harrogate, Lutterworth in Leicestershire, Newbury in Berkshire, Liphook in Hampshire and South Godtsone in Surrey pending further investigations. The investigation involved the West Berkshire Trading Standards Office and the Metropolitan and Essex police forces who executed a warrant at an address in Essex where they also made an arrest. Sky News had learnt of estimates that investors had lost £250 million to numerous scams since

www.thenewsonline.es

2006. They have spoken to dozens of investors who claim to have lost large amounts of savings to the schemes by Asset Land Investments that sold plots of land claiming the areas were to be rezoned for development with the value rising with it. However, many people found that land was actually within nature reserves and areas such as green belt that would likely never be rezoned. One area had been bought by Assett Land for just £115 thousand pounds and had been broken up into small plots where they had already sold 50 of them for a total of £761,000 potentially making £3 million on just one field. Since the schemes were exposed in 2006 some 90 companies have already been closed down by the insolvency Service and the Financial Services Authority but there has never been a criminal conviction

against a land bank fraudster. The cases are expected to reach the courts later this year and last week five people were charged with conspiracy to commit fraud, contrary to common law, arising out of companies Brown Mackenzie, Charles Barklay and Lawrence Taylor. The five individuals are Clive Griston, Matthew Noad, Edward Burchett, Harry Neal and Juell Rahman who allegedly dishonestly represented plots to investors at Dumbarton, Cullompton and Towcester as suitable investment opportunities claiming that they would make a substantial profits from the purchases, according to Andrew Penhale, Deputy Head of the CPS Central Fraud Division.

Old? Not us! A survey has found that senior citizens object to the terms elderly or OAP and prefer the titles “grey panther” and “silver surfer” instead. The term “silver surfer” refers to senior citizens with their silver hair surfing the net to keep in touch with family and friends. Also acceptable, they say, were “retired” or “senior citizen”. It was said that their main objections to the terms elderly and OAP were that they conjured up images of “old and doddery people relying on Zimmer frames and walking sticks who had gone ‘slightly gaga’!” whereas today’s seniors are far more active and mentally astute.

UK prices fall House prices are likely to fall further in the UK following an early summer slowdown in people looking to buy a home.

The gap between the number of sellers and buyers continues to grow and prices are expected to drop again in the autumn, housing analyst Hometrack said on Monday. Prices fell by 0.1% in July after being flat the previous month with activity slowing down noticeably in London (the only area to show any growth at all) and the south east where prices were down in 35% of the

regions that had previously been keeping prices up. Prices in the northern regions – that have traditionally fallen faster than those in the south – are said to have “bottomed out” according to the report. Borrowers with smaller deposits are expected to have a particularly tough time finding a mortgage in the coming months as lenders continue to tighten their criteria in the uncertain economy. The study was based on research from 1,500 estate agents across England and Wales.

Whooping cough incidents rise There has been a huge surge in cases of Whooping Cough that has spanned all ages in England and Wales according to worrying figures from the Health Protection Agency who have reported the deaths of five newborn babies this year. The agency reveals that 675 people have been diagnosed in June bringing, the total to 2,466 this year so far. However, the disease is known to increase in number every three to four years and there were only 1,118 cases during the whole of 2011. Health experts are encouraging parents to make sure they take their children for their vaccinations as soon as they are due at two, three and four months of age

plus a further booster dose before they start school, but those younger than two months old can still be at risk. The only way to protect children under that age would be to immunize the pregnant mother and hope that some of it would reach the foetus. The Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation are expected to advise the Department of Health next month whether they consider this a necessary step. Whooping Cough gets its name from the noise made by sufferers as they gasp for air between coughing fits and sufferers have been known to cough hard enough to crack ribs, faint, vomit or develop a hernia. The disease is rarely fatal in adults.

Weymouth full The sailing town of Weymouth, the centre for the sport during the 2012 Olympics because of its world famous sailing waters, has been flooded with tourists and a lot of the hotels have been fully booked since before Christmas – with many of them hiking the prices of their rooms to capitalise on the Olympics. At 60 miles away from the main Games happening in the east end of London, the normally town usually sleepy doubles its number during the summer season but this year the town is full to bursting. However, some

businesses fear that the influx of sports tourists could damage their businesses by driving away normal tourism from people they hope would return in subsequent years once they had holidayed there for the first time. The new facilities will make it a world-class venue for sailors in the future which may bring in a different kind of tourism and media coverage of the events will increase the overall profile of the town. Britain is the world’s top Olympic sailing nation with a squad of 16 sailors including gold medalist Ben Ainsley.

Experience the Fire of Brazil at Macarena The people of Fuengirola were treated to impromptu street entertainment last Thursday, as the floor show from the inauguration of Fuengirola’s newest restaurant spilled into the street. The New Art of Restaurant Rodizio Macarena gave us a taste of their nightly entertainment – an extravaganza of Brazilian beauties in beads and feathers, dancing to the Samba and Lambada rhythms of the Brazilian drums, the incredible Caporiera Show and Fire Show. Consider this entertainment the ‘dressing’ and we can get to the ‘meat’ of the restaurant which is what Rodizio Macarena is all about, and sets it apart

from any other restaurant on the coast. A 300-year-old tradition of passing a skewer of meat between weary gauchos at sunset has been updated and waiters carve a variety of meats directly on to your plate. Delicious combinations of succulent meats, imported from South America, Germany and Holland continually make the rounds so your plate is never empty. Chicken, lamb, beef and pork are all cooked to perfection and carved

from the skewer at your table. To accompany your meat, you are offered fries, rice, black beans, prawns and, of course, the sumptuous salad bar that is continually replenished though out the evening. Rodizio Macarena also boasts a Brazil Lounge where you can enjoy cocktails, and in particular, the national Brazilian drink, Caipirinha, which is a refreshing but extremely potent cocktail!

Bust According to top accounting firm Pryce Waterhouse, 426 retailers went out of business due to financial problems in the second quarter of 2012 – up from 386 last year with 277of them going down in the north east and Cumbria which is up 77% on the same period last year. The company blames poor weather earlier in the year.

Eco-friendly scheme will create jobs and promote tourism A major boost to a local rural economy is now much closer to becoming reality thanks to the perseverance and dedication of a Casarabonela-based British Project Manager and Business start-up specialist. More than 35 full- and part-time jobs will be created once the €2.5 million Hotel and Eco Activities complex has been built in the Arroyo de Casarabonela – a valley just 3km from the village centre, one of the nine white villages situated in the beautiful and ecologically important Sierra de las Nieves Biosphere National Park area. Once the Hotel and Eco Activities Centre is up and running the business should generate at least a further £2.5 million on an annual basis which will be pumped into the local economy. Avril Quince, who heads a strong management team in Spain and the UK said: “We have permission to build the complex, we have funding in place and we have a start date.” Avril, who has been planning the venture for nine years, prefers not to remember the huge amount of bureaucratic difficulties she has had to overcome in order to get the project to the point where building can start in November 2012 with a first phase completion by the following April 2013. The ambitious project, which has already swallowed half in a million euros development, planning and land purchase costs, will provide an all-yearround Eco Activity Centre for those interested in all kinds of outdoor pursuits such as mountain biking, hiking, paragliding, horse trekking, triathlons, swimming, bird watching as well as activity challenges including monkey bridge, abseiling and rock climbing. “There is a dedicated team on board here and in the UK,” Avril continues, “and we have the support of the British Armed Forces who want to use the centre

for the “Forces Challenge” activities. We have planned and tested the routes and some of the challenges, and we have had them approved by the representatives of the charities raising funds for the Armed Forces including RAFBF, Bomber Command and Coming Home.” At present a separate UK company, Eco Activities Ltd, is organising the bookings and events, but eventually the business will be wholly integrated and based here in Spain.

Eco-friendly centre The hotel will be built from scratch on a 36,000 sq metre site which looks up to the village and the majestic Sierra de la Prieta range above. It will cater for charity events, wedding holidays, women only breaks, same-sex and

singles-only events, as well as the core business of providing an eco-friendly centre for singles and teams’ outdoor pursuits activities. “What has always puzzled us,” added Avril, “is that over the nine-year period we have been trying to spend €2.5 million in building costs and generate 35 jobs and the spin-off activity that should result from the project, is why we have faced so many difficulties and obstructions from officials. Hopefully all that is now behind us. We now have a timetable, we have all the planning permissions and approvals together with the promise of funding from the EU and a grant from the Sierra de las Nieves conservation group. This will bring much needed jobs and income to the area as well as the spinoffs of increased tourism, car hire and people eating

out in local bars and restaurants.”

Booking now All that is holding up building now is a required environmental study which will take until October to complete. While the project will be up and running by next April, further development will have to be staged due to a funding shortfall caused by the bureaucratic delays. Now that the start dates have been approved and bookings can be made Avril plans to offer short term investment opportunities for syndicates or individuals with very attractive income returns. “We have a very comprehensive business plan which we can release to genuinely interested parties who may wish to do their own due diligence,” said Avril.

Search continues for missing Briton The Guardia Civil are continuing their search for 63-year-old Gordon Simm, who has been missing since he went for a hike up the Chillar valley in Nerja on Saturday, July 21st. The chief of Malaga’s eastern firefighters, Manuel Pitos, said on Monday that Simm was an experienced hiker, in good physical shape who knew the Sierra de Almijara well. He added: “It’s a hard area, but you can survive. There are caves where you can take refuge, and there are parts with water. We must not lose hope.” He referred to the case of a Dutch tourist lost in the same area just over a year who was rescued after 20 days. A Guardia Civil spokesman said there had

Junta de Andalucía premier José Antonio Griñán officially re-opened the Alhambra’s most emblematic patio – the Patio de Los Leones – last Friday, which had been closed off to the public for ten years while the 12 statues were being restored to their original splendour.

Spaniards staying away The economic crisis has kept many foreigners at home in recent years and forced more Spaniards to spend their holidays at home as well. As a result foreign tourist figures for the Costa del Sol dropped but Spaniards made up the shortfall, until this year. Available figures show that so far this year there has been a 5 per cent rise in foreign visitors to the Costa but a similar number of Spanish tourists have stayed away.

The Patio de los Leones is the main court of the Nasrid dynasty Palace of the Lions, in the heart of the Alhambra. It was commissioned by the Nasrid sultan Muhammed V of the Emirate of Granada in AlAndalus and its

The council has classified the project as “of public interest” which will help speed up the paperwork still to be done. The station will be located between the Avenida de Andalucia and the fuengirola river and will serve more than 200,000 people living in Mijas, fuengirola and benalmadena. Drunk leaves kid in car More Britons and French are coming than in previous years but there were 20 per cent fewer Italian and Portuguese visitors.

A woman was surprised to see a four-year-old girl sleeping in a parked car in the Plaza del Pilar at 3 am one morning last week. She called the police who started to look for an adult when they arrived on the scene. They did not have far to go – her father was drunk and sleeping on a pavement a few metres away.

However, a majority of the Spaniards who can still afford a holiday this year are heading for Andalucia.

Said to be from South America, the 30-year-old man was arrested and charged with temporarily abandoning a minor. His mobile showed ten missed calls, all from the girl’s mother, who hurried to the scene.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Echoes from the past

Uncanny parallels

I

T

n a column a few years back I talked about Spain’s Moorish inheritance, highlighting both the good and the bad aspects. And there were lots of good ones in fact. Thanks to that eight-century long occupation (711-1492), we have the guitar, which evolved from their four-string lyre. Without them, we could well be adding up in Roman numerals and we might still be in the dark ages believing that the universe revolved around the Earth. Fortunately, their much superior knowledge not only of astronomy but also of mathematics, botany, geography, philosophy and medicine created an oasis of light in what was otherwise a world plunged into darkness after the fall of the Roman Empire in 476. Another good thing they left behind was their architectural style – known as Spanish Colonial – which can be seen as far away as California, the Philippines and throughout South America – where the building skills the Spaniards inherited from the Moors are very much in evidence.

S

pain under the Moors was a perfect example of the multicultural pluralism that we hear so much of today. Jews, Arabs and Spanish Christians – themselves a mixture of the survivors of the Roman occupation and the Visigoths – lived, prayed and dreamed alongside each other under the more benign Moorish rulers. However, some were not so benign so there were also periods of racial or religious strife.

T

he Moors also had an enormous impact on the Spanish language – all words beginning with al- as in alcachofa (artichoke), many words beginning with a-, aduana (customs), azucar (sugar), and the names of many fruits, among them oranges and lemons – are of Moorish origin. The English language also benefited – alcohol, almanac, coffee, cotton, elixir, jasmine, nadir, saffron, zenith and zero are just a few examples of the words they gave us.

B

and Baghdad. The Moors brought it with them to Spain from whence it made its way to the rest of Europe. They also brought their incredibly fast and beautiful horses, which the English especially and the Spaniards eventually developed into the thoroughbreds that are so prized today, especially on race courses.

O

ne of Spain’s most famous – and outspoken – historians, America Castro (1885-1972) said Spain owes its character as a nation to three peoples – the Moors, Jews and Christians – and the expulsion of the two former by the latter, in 1492, did incalculable harm to Spain, especially in agriculture and finance. The Spaniards in those days took great pride in having “clean hands” – that is, hands that never came into contact with soil or money. But while the Catholic Monarchs physically expelled the Moors and the Jews, they could not expel their influence, especially in Andalucia, the last part of the country to be taken back from the Moors. The Andalucians’ need for human contact, their flowery language and flamboyance, their ability to live each moment intensely and their cavalier attitude towards time which sets them apart from the rest of Spain all go back to the Moors.

O

n the downside, so does their taste for intrigue and envy, their tendency to talk instead of doing and their macho attitudes which not all the well-meaning legislation in the world can wipe out overnight.

A

lot of present-day corruption can be blamed on the Moors and their personal form of government, which is still the custom throughout most of the Arab world. All you had to do was whisper a few words into the ear of the Sultan or Vizier or some person who had direct contact with those in power, give them a nice present, and voila! – your problem was solved. Sounds familiar?

ut their impact on agriculture was even more far-reaching. They converted the arid parts of southern Spain into a paradise on earth by repairing and improving the Roman irrigation schemes they found here, and adding a few inventions of their own – which made Spain the major agricultural producer that she is today.

herever we look in Andalucia, the Moorish influence is there. You don’t have to go further than the nearest pottery shop to see it. Who hasn’t got a brightly coloured plant pot in their garden or on their windowsill? Yes, the Moors are still with us, in many more ways than one.

O

B

ne of the many useful things they imported was paper, which was invented in China. It took centuries to travel west via Samarkand

W

ut more on that next week, when I’ll take a closer look at the darker side of Andalucia’s Moorish inheritance.

here was a country that once had extreme wealth. The citizens of this nation lived relatively well, a burgeoning middle class was in the works. Even the poorest residents had money to spend – maybe not as much as others who took advantage of this country’s boom years, but it was enough for them to purchase the finer consumer goods that were available on the market, making them feel good even if it was just for the short run.

I

n the poor shanty town areas neighbours had the latest televisions, appliances and electronic items inside their makeshift shacks. The flowing money quickly turned this nation into a consumer society. Those who were more fortunate could make trips abroad to other countries, such as the United States, where they partook in even more shopping sprees. Yes, corruption was also rampant but there was little concern that public officials were illicitly profiting where they shouldn’t have been tinkering. As long as people had their own cash to spend, they didn't care much about the manner in which parties and government conducted business. Only the most outrageous, blatant cases of graft were prosecuted during these lavish years and even then, only a few eyebrows were raised.

T

he wealth that was being spread had been generated by just one industry. The government spent the money it received unwisely on overburdening infrastructure, such as overpriced roads and bridges, through contracts given to friends and cronies whose budgets swelled before the final project was completed. Investments in education, health and R-D industries were ignored. Then all at once, it seemed, it all came crashing down. The industry which had changed people’s lives and kept their pockets filled, imploded because of global turbulences. Jobs were lost, shortages began and the citizens began pointing fingers at their government leaders.

N

eeding a bailout, the government’s leaders went to the IMF, which was happy to help them out, but with some painful strings attached. Food and energy prices would soar and taxes were hiked. The boom years went ka-boom. Then the violence began. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in every different city

to loot shops, and steal from those who seemed to have taken advantage of the situation. Vandals destroyed bank branch offices and government buildings. The crime rate soared to unprecedented levels, and the political situation became so unbearable that citizens desperately began seeking out “a messiah” – someone who would take them back to the wonder years.

T

his is what took place in Venezuela during the 1980s and 1990s. The developments that occurred in an almost 20-year period are not unique. We have seen many of these ingredients for upheaval repeated and still being played out in Spain as society struggles to understand what is happening and the government desperately looks for ways to keep the nation from sinking.

V

enezuela took advantage of its oil industry as much as Spain placed all its bets on construction and real estate. Both sectors in these countries were hit hard by different crises and neither Venezuela nor Spain had anything to fall back on. Both governments sought out external help but at an agonizing price. Violence has already begun this year in several Spanish cities, and we can expect more blowups in the autumn when prices go up and the most severe cutbacks take effect.

A

s Der Spiegel asked in an excellent report about Spain appearing in its English edition on Monday: “Is this stable democracy, this reliable European Union partner often praised as the alliance's “southern anchor”, the fourth-largest economy in the euro zone, after Germany, France and Italy, at a crossroads? And could it even see a return to authoritarian, nationalist times, 37 years after the death of former dictator Francisco Franco?”

I

t is difficult to conceive that a Spanish “messiah” in the likeness of a Hugo Chávez will appear on the political scene. Spaniards still remember their dark Francoist past too vividly to even consider seeking out a nationalist leader. The economic and political developments occurring across Europe are ones that have not been seen in many years. Only drastic measures and radical change through the combined efforts of EU leaders will get us out of this mess.

Fab flying feats at Farnborough Organisers of the worldfamous Farnborough International Airshow got ready for the public show to which crowds of up to 130,000 turned up over a Saturday and Sunday recently. Over 50 aircraft were on static display across the weekend and together with a range of exhilarating rides, interactive exhibits, prototype cars, flight simulators, extreme sports demonstrations and restaurants and cafes to suit every taste, the 48th Farnborough International Airshow promised to be an unbeatable family day out. And what’s more kids got in free! The star of the show was, of course, the five-hour flying spectacular. This year saw two jet teams display – the Red Arrows and the Breitling Jet team – as well as other aerobatic treats from The Blades, solo pilot Mark Jeffries and the Breitling wing walkers. The roar and thunder of military fighter jets set hearts racing as they flew over Farnborough and the

opportunity to see the only flying Avro Vulcan was one not to be missed. Speaking about the show, Shaun Ormrod, Chief Executive at Farnborough International Ltd said, “We know people travel from all over the world to come to the Farnborough Airshow and we’re delighted to welcome them all. It may not be the best summer in terms of the weather, but with the Diamond Jubilee and London 2012 Olympics, we’re proud that the Farnborough Airshow played its part in this historic season.” The massive A 380 airbus was put through its paces with everybody thinking as it trundled slowly along the runway that it would never get off the ground but, all of a sudden, it was airbourne and travelling virtually vertically. It was a worrying sight as the pilot threw the aircraft this way and that – at what looked like travelling at around 10mph. However, of course, its sheer size makes it look slower and it came safely into land some minutes later.

Despite the downpours, the show ran as scheduled and for those visitors arriving by car there was plenty of hard standing car parking areas. The show started on an extremely positive note as the Prime Minister, David Cameron, officially opened the event and on the Wednesday, Virgin boss, Sir Richard Branson

introduced the UK to the future of space travel with the Virgin Galactic SpaceShip Two. The heavens opened and the rains poured, the sky was grey and the aerobatics had to be reined in lower so that everyone could still see some skilled aerobatics from small fighters to huge jets to old bi-planes and a Lancaster (pictured above)

together with a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain flight. But, what a weekend! While the weather may have caused some disruption and cancellation at other large outdoor events, the Farnborough International Airshow ran smoothly for its exhibitors and visitors alike with plenty of business taking place.

British National Day What happened? There was supposed to be loads of stalls, entertainment for all, displays of what Britain has to offer food wise and a whole host of other stalls at the La Trocha British National Day in Coin last Saturday. Jo Taylor from the Royal British Legion had organised over 30 stalls with entertainment all day long, but then the venue took over and there were around 15 exhibitors in the end. The News was there, the Anglican church with David Such and Caroline MacFarlane was there, Cudeca from Alora, the quilters club, a company that made unique trophies, one that supplied all manner of different types of chilli sauces, a building company and a couple of others. Poor Ricky Leach was called upon at the last minute, we were told, to try and sort it out. There wasn’t even any entertainment other than what came over the tannoy as usual. Next time we hope they let Jo stick with it and we can all have a fun Brit day!

Community News Lions go for Gold Remembrance fund Hols set up by foreigners for local boy

Local Coin boy 23-year-old Sergio Retamar Marquez who was murdered by one of his flatmates in Bournemouth UK just over a week ago is to be remembered by the community. There was an Olympic theme last week when the La Cala Lions took part in the annual town parade which marks the opening of the Feria. Members carried Olympic banners and torches round the streets and gave out gold medals on ribbons as well as handfuls of sweets to the watching children. The Lions are very active in La Cala and have raised over 500.000 euros for good causes since the group was formed. A recent donation (1000 euros) went to the La Cala Fencing club which teaches fencing to youngsters, some of whom took part in the procession and showed off their skills.

Lion Jim Sutton, a member also of Sol Classic Car Club had arranged for three other classics to join his red MGB (affectionately known as Doris) and the cars added great interest to the section with cameras clicking non-stop. La Cala Lions, who run their own charity shop in Calle Torremolinos welcome new and enthusiastic members for their club, so if you might be interested in having fun while raising money for worthwhile causes contact their president Bryan Coventry on 676 304 605 or 951 273325 or email bryancoventry@hotmail. co.uk

Pets of the week

Buddy

Sid

This is Buddy, another unwanted and abandoned dog looking for a good home. He is a big bundle of love, just waiting for someone to come and take him to a loving home. He would make someone a wonderful pet, an abandoned animal seems to have a sixth sense and know it has been rescued, and in return give unconditional love. For more information about Buddy contact Pat on 620 354 885 or visit our NEW website at www.famaspain.com FAMA’S policy is never to have a healthy dog put down – they have a home with us for life or until they are adopted.

Here we have Sid who was abandoned and unwanted and who is now looking for a good home. Sid was unfortunately left sad and lonely by his owners which no animal deserves. Luckily FAMA rescued him and now at least he is well fed and loved by all the volunteers, who give up their free time to help look after not only Sid but also all the other abandoned animals – without them our work would be impossible. If you would like to meet SID or any of our abandoned animals please contact Pat on 620 354 885 for further information, or visit our NEW website, left.

Shelley Exley and Emma Webber have set up a scheme for donations toward a wreath, a memorial tree and plaque on behalf of the ex-pat community and has approached the family to approve the idea. Local law firm De Cotta Law is holding the monies collected that will eventually purchase the memorials. They have also offered help, assistance and advice both to the family and Mayor’s office the family. Those who donate towards the

memorials will be invited to the unveiling ceremony. Donations can be made by coming into their offices in Coin, on Sierra Chica opposite the La Trocha Commercial Centre on the Coin to Cartama road between 11am and 2pm or by contacting coin@decottalaw.net for details of how to pay your donation if you can’t get to their offices. More information can also be obtained from their Facebook group page called Sergio Retamar Flowers for funeral/memorial where you will need to send a request to join. They will post all information on how the collection is going, when the funeral will be held etc., and you will be able to find out where your donations were spent.

Dogs are trained to lick the hand if they sense a low. When a diabetic sleeps, the dog will stand guard and get on top of the person to

If you are thinking of driving up into or through France in the future there is a new law that many of you may be unaware of.

From July 1st, all French drivers driving on roads in France must carry a breathalyser kit in their cars. The measure, announced by the previous government, was due to take effect four months ago, but the rush to buy the kits has led to supplies being sold out, which has led to a moratorium on the introduction of the devices. According to the French authorities, the regulation, the first of its kind to be introduced in the European Union, will also

The President and Secretary of T.O.P.S., an Amateur Dramatic Group based in Alhaurin el Grande, visited the Ayuntamiento to present two cheques to Mayor Juan Martin Serron. The group recently held a very successful musical show at the home of one of their members, Monique Tovey-Mansfield (who also attended the presentation) and the proceeds were divided equally between two Alhaurin el Grande charity organisations. Five hundred euros was donated to “Respito

Familiar”, a society that arranges one weekend per year respite for parents of severely handicapped children who require around the clock care, and five hundred euros was also given to the “Centro de Discapacitados Psiquicos Fahala” who provide care and stimulation for children and adults with physical and mental disabilities. Both charities are assisted in one way or another by the local council, and it was the mayor who brought the existence of both charities to the attention of T.O.P.S.

Colomares

Colomares Castle is located at the Carretera del Sol in Benalmadena Pueblo. This beautiful edifice was constructed by Dr. Esteban Martin y Martin, with the help of two masons, between 1987 and 1994. Originally it was used to fly the eagles that are now housed at the top of the mountain that you can get to by the local cablecar – though, of course, you can still walk up if you’re feeling energetic! It has the look of a castle in a fairy tale and was constructed with brick,

Last Saturday night saw La Risa @ Lauro Golf’s fourth birthday party and what a night it was. People had to be turned away for this all-ticket event that had been sold out (take note: this is one of the coast’s best evenings so next year book early) but those of us who had booked in advance were not to be disappointed. The evening was hot and sultry and so too, according to some of the ladies, was

singer Jason Oliver – where does he get all that energy from? A little girl called Sydney was the first up dancing before we’d had our dinner and matched Jason’s dancing step for step. “Why do they always bounce?” cried Jason. Well, that’s what kids do when they’re happy! Dinner was served. Salads of all kinds were available as were baked potatoes with proper English style butter, rices,

pastas including a beautifully made pasta salad in the style of coronation chicken, fresh tasting pepper salads, bread, and all manner of others side dishes. Then there was the BBQ. You could eat as much as you liked with steaks, sausages, sticky BBQ ribs, cajun style chicken wings, beefburgers made in their own kitchens from 100% beef. Fresh lemon cheesecake and apple streudel were followed by La Risa’s now famous

sparkly birthday cupcakes (left) and, of course, lovely wines and soft drinks to wash it all down with. Sydney may have been first up but everybody else joined in the dancing after dinner and had a fabulous evening dining, wining and dancing. Happy birthday La Risa – see you again for the next one! La Risa is, of course, open for lunches, dinners, drinks or just a coffee and snack in the meantime. Call 660 350 896 to book

Pógs, the Celtic Twist Pógs live music bar drifts back to its Irish roots next Sunday 5th August with a nice slice of Celtic knowhow and good musical style from Mandolin Mick (pictured below right) and Chicago Jim (below left). The talented two-some put on a good show of mixed popular music with a catchy Celtic twist to it. Easy going, singer-guitarist, Chicago Jim enjoys the banter and rapport with his audience, his own Motown influence brings out American classic hits that never fade. Mick, a man of much talent but relatively

few words, has a Celtic musical background that adds an Irish depth to an evening’s entertainment. Between them lies a broad and varied repertoire of good music that starts around the early 60's. Both are also key members of the well known Celtic fusion band The Stolen Gnomes. The Stolen Gnomes are regular performers at many of the live music venues here on the Costa del Sol, as well as at the Feria de Los Pueblos in Fuengirola and The Mijas International Festival – two highly

popular annual events that attract 1000s of visitors every year. Pógs the large Irish style live music bar in Fuengirola near the PYR hotel hosts great local talent. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted Director: Eric Darnell Voices by: Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer, Sacha Baron Cohen, Chris Rock, Jade Pinkett Smith Cast your mind back to when this franchise first started and we were introduced to four Central Park Zoo inhabitants – Alex the vain lion (Stiller), Marty the kooky zebra (Rock), Melvin the hypochondriac giraffe (Schwimmer) and Gloria the don’t-you-mess with me hippo (Pinkett Smith) who all ended up in an exotic wilderness far beyond their well ordered zoo lives. There they met the loco lemur king Julien (Baron

Cohen) and a crew of gung-ho penguins and the scene was set for a comedy of errors coupled with a fabulously fun soundtrack. It was a huge hit for Dreamworks, who naturally revisited the characters in a sequel which ended with them still in Africa. And now we find ourselves in the third – and probably final – instalment as the gang are still set on returning to the Big Apple. They all

Many critics have reckoned that this is the best outing yet for Alex and his chums as the underlying theme of friendship and finding home is explored. A great trip out for all the family.

ou would think that Y after 47 years there would be a better Olympic theme tune, but no, it´s always that dreadful composition by Vangelis. Honestly, why is it that when one was mimicking any kind of sport, everything slows down and Vangelis begins to play? I know “Chariots of Fire” was important in its day, but come on, it had Nigel Havers in it – so it´s hardly a classic! ere is a question: why is H it called “Chariots of Fire”? I don´t recall any or those of you who Fmisswere lucky enough to it the first time round,

Patsy might be hiding a few more wrinkles, Eddy's designer outfits are a size (or three) bigger, but the ageing fashionistas have lost none of their appetite for living it large, regardless of how ridiculous they look! In these hysterical episodes, Saffy's new best friend forces Patsy to finally reveal her age – to the nearest decade or two; Eddy signs up a legendary French actress for an Albert Hall performance,

not a sporty person like myself, you´ll be avoiding the TV. It´s not like it´s bad enough with limited edition shampoos going on sale, or the irritating Coca Cola adverts, it´s much worse – because due to the London 2012 Olympics, some smarty pants, has decided to re-release “Chariots of Fire”!!!

radiantly beautiful as the jewellery she sells in Clara, London’s most discerning jewellers. But for Mary life is about so much more than material wealth and she’s ready to turn her back on London and escape to the other side of the world.

nfortunately, it´s here, U the summer Olympics have begun and if you´re

but can she sing? And, as London goes Olympics mad, someone rather important (Hollywood, darling) rents the house as the ladies undertake some gold medal schmoozing.

this is the general plot of the movie. Based on a true story, it centres on two gifted athletes and their quest to run in the 1924 Olympics. The first is Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross), a haughty sprinter with an obsession for winning. Abrahams, who is Jewish, is a man with something to prove, mostly to himself. His rival is Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson), the first man to ever beat him in a sprint. Liddell is a devout Christian and runs for the glory of God. egarding the re-release R of the film, the producer David Puttnam, said: "Chariots of Fire is about guts, determination and

belief. Just as the film succeeded in raising spirits and aspirations 30 years ago, I believe it could deliver exactly the same message today. At the heart of the film is the quest for Olympic glory, and I find hard to imagine anything more likely to resonate throughout the country this summer." don´t entirely agree with Iwhat his statement, I think will resonate throughout the country this summer will be that absolute incompetence of G4 Security. The Olympics are supposed to unite the world and bring revenue to the country that hosts it. Considering the poor organisation, it will end up costing the UK more than the generated revenue – if they are lucky, they will break even. hile I´m on the subject W of sport, I have an idea that will make everyone happy. It´s to do with cyclists, before I start, congratulations to Wiggins for winning the Tour de France, not that I am into the Tour, but it was while watching a bit of it I had my idea. And here it is, I think that all cyclist should pay road tax, because even though to them, they only use a slither, vehicles still have to overtake them, entering the opposite lane (for the cyclists safety) – so they are indeed using too much road. ountain bikes are ok, M but it´s the cyclists who have the expensive bikes and the spandex who are the ones who cause all the trouble, when procyclist bikes are sold they should be registered through Trafico, insured and pay road tax. And if they don´t agree, then please use the cycle paths!

VIRGO

Have you been beating yourself up over something recently? If you have then I expect you are feeling a lot of doubt around someone or something. Perhaps it is because you expect to be able to freely express your desires as you wish, however, bear in mind that the things you say and do will affect they way others respond to you. Everything you do seems to be amplified right now for good or bad as your personality is in a strong mode. There is something in the air that you just can’t shake no matter how hard you try. You may need to meet someone half way as both sides seem to be digging their heels in with neither of you getting what you want. At the moment your mind is extremely powerful and you are being asked to look beyond the words that others are saying and penetrate to the core or heart of the matter. The quieter you are the more others show their hand. Repeating the same things over and over because this is how it has always been – those days are through. Your eyes have been opened and it is your move and no longer are the old ruts and routines going to hold you captive. Be willing to take some risks and chances. Your instinct may want you to retreat into your shell and pull back your affection and love towards someone in your life but this is no time to hide, stand tall. Things come out of the blue at just the right time; words are spoken by you that have a way of altering a seemingly impossible situation. You are going to be reminded of the fire within you this week and this energy will enable you to pull anything off. An area of your life is moving ahead and this in turn can make others feel left behind. All you have to do is follow through on what your heart is telling you. Everything is different now Virgo, you and your life are not the same as they used to be. Do not be afraid to seek out what you want, whatever you go for you are likely to get right now. This energy requires you to become more dynamic and assertive in seeking out what you want, the days of waiting around to see what's left over are long gone. This is no time for hibernating, strive for personal success in all that you undertake.

LIBRA

There is a lot happening in your life and fast, the speed and intensity can be quite overwhelming, but all these events are moving you to a point where perhaps lifechanging choices and decisions will have to be made. You have to decide what it is you really want and need from life. Give others the chance to express themselves September 23rd - as it will be insightful to listen to their viewpoint. Make sure you create a space where October 22nd you can regain some balance amidst all the chaos.

SCORPIO

The real root of your desires well up to the surface and suddenly you are not worried about commitment or responsibility, the thought of not having this thing in your life is just too painful. It feels easier now to take something to the next level as long as there is trust, trust in yourself and others. The answers are staring you in the face this week and your confidence and determination re-surface for all to see.

It could appear as if what seemed a permanent barrier with another has come down, beware the temptation to ‘stick your nose in’ or interfere with topics where you do not know the full story. You are able to see events in a detached mode at present and this will help you to release the past so that you are able to move wholeheartedly into the future. You could be assessing or testing someone to see if their words match their actions.

Forgiveness does not erase the memories; however, it can help to mend a broken bridge between you and another and serve to release hard emotions that have been lodged in your heart. A crucial piece of your past intends to be healed and cleared, initially hanging onto anger helps you to feel strong but overtime it just destroys opportunities. This is very important in your case, because much of the future has a deep connection to the past as well.

Omelette wedges (Serves 4

Ingredients: • 3 spring onions • 200g new potatoes • 4 rashers smoked bacon • 2 tbsp sunflower oil , plus 1 tsp • 8 eggs • 1 tsp English mustard • 85g mature cheddar • 2 tomatoes

Directions 1. Finely chop the spring onions and set aside. Thickly slice the potatoes (there is no need to peel them first), then boil in a pan of lightly salted water for 10 mins until just tender. Drain. 2. Meanwhile snip the bacon into pieces with scissors. Heat a frying pan with 1 tsp oil, then stir-fry the bacon until it turns pink. Add the spring onions to the pan, stir briefly for a couple of seconds to slightly soften, then tip the bacon and onion into a bowl. 3. Break the eggs into a bowl, then whisk with the mustard and a little salt and pepper. Make sure you don't get any shell into the mix. If you are worried you might, you can break the eggs into a cup, one at a time, before adding to the bowl – or ask an adult to break them for you.

mixture with the cooked bacon, onions and potatoes. Gently stir to mix everything. Heat 2 tbsp oil in the pan; when it is hot, pour in the mixture, then stir a couple of times as it sets on the base of the pan to start it cooking. 5. Turn on the grill so it has time to heat up. Leave the omelette to cook, undisturbed, over a low heat for about 6 mins. Meanwhile, cut the tomatoes into wedges, scatter over the omelette and sprinkle with the grated cheese. 6. When the omelette seems set on the base, but is still a little eggy on top, put the frying pan under the grill to cook the last of the egg mixture and melt the cheese. Cool for 5 mins, then turn out of the pan. Cut into wedges and serve with ketchup, toast, tea and orange juice for a delicious family breakfast.

4. Grate the cheese and add half to the egg

G o, go, go (Pa r t 1) How do you say "go" in Spanish? Well, as usual, it depends on who is going and when they are going. The verb ir - to go is the most irregular but also one of the most used verbs in the whole of the Spanish language. So, let's look at some of the most useful ways "go" is translated I go - Voy, You go - Vas Let's go - Vamos Shall we go? - ¿Vamos? I have to go - Tengo que irme. I want to go - Quiero ir. Do you have to go? - ¿Tienes que irte? Do you want to go? - ¿Quieres ir? I will go - Iré You will go - Irás We will go - Iremos Tomorrow I will go to Malaga - Mañana iré a Malaga. Next week you will go to Ibiza - La semana que viene irás a Ibiza. Next year we will go to Barcelona - El año que viene iremos a Barcelona. And if you want to pass on some advice perhaps you will need the following : I would go -Iría, If I were you - Yo que tú If I were you I would go to Malaga - Yo que tú, iría a Malaga. If I were you I wouldn't go to Madrid - Yo que tú, no iría a Madrid. In our next article we will be looking at idioms using go: go up, go down, go in, go out, etc. Hasta la próxima, Valerie Valerie runs the Centro Idiomas Language School in Coin. Ebola threat in Uganda Electric fans not so cool Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni called on people on Monday to avoid physical contact, after the deadly Ebola virus spread to the capital, Kampala. Fourteen people have died, including one in Kampala, since the outbreak began in western Uganda three weeks ago, he said in a special broadcast. Mr Museveni added that health officials were trying to trace everyone who had had contact with victims so that they could be quarantined. Officials have said most are linked to one family, who may have contracted the virus while attending a funeral. "Be vigilant – avoid shaking of hands that can cause contact through sweat," Mr Museveni said. "Do not take on burying

People without airconditioning often turn to electric fans for relief from the heat. But some experts have questioned whether electric fans might actually hamper efforts to cool down.

somebody who has died from symptoms that look like Ebola. Instead call health workers because they know how to do it.” He went on to say: "Avoid promiscuity because this sickness can also go through sex." Ebola is one of the most virulent diseases in the world. It is spread by close personal contact, and kills up to 90% of those who become infected. There is

no vaccine for the virus. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever, weakness, headache, vomiting and impaired kidneys. More than 1,200 deaths from the virus have been recorded since it was discovered in 1976. Uganda has seen three major outbreaks over the past 12 years. The deadliest was in 2000 when 425 people were infected. More than half of them died.

In a new study, a team of British researchers reviewed evidence on the effectiveness of electric fans during heat waves that have occurred all over the world. Despite what many people think, most fans do not directly cool the ambient air. When placed in an open window, they pull in cooler air from outside. But there is a point at which their effectiveness may diminish. The researchers found that when temperatures climb

past 95 degrees, having a fan pointed at you can actually increase the heat, not reduce it. At those temperatures, being directly in the path of hot air blown from a fan can raise the risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion. The researchers said that while they could not support or recommend

against the use of electric fans in sweltering conditions, it was important to consider their potential harms and benefits. That is especially the case for vulnerable populations like the elderly, “who are less able to cool down through sweating or increasing the flow of blood to their skin,” the researchers said.

Foods dieters should have to hand l

Balsamic vinegar

Two tablespoons of salad dressing contain approximately 150 calories. Two tablespoons of balsamic vinegar contain less than 10 calories and yet your salad will taste every bit as good. A splash of balsamic vinegar, a little brown sugar and a pinch of salt will turn even the plainest tinned tomatoes into a mouthwatering, waistline friendly sauce that tastes great on pasta, homemade pizza, chicken, fish or pulses. l

Tinned puy lentils

Once thought of as “hippy food”, tinned green lentils are now all the rage. Packed full of cholesterollowering, blood sugar-balancing fibre, these super convenient lentils are also a great source of six important minerals, two mood balancing B-vitamins and they are also high in hunger-zapping protein too – all for just 230 calories for a whole cup. Lentils are the chameleon of the food world as they take on almost any

flavours you care to throw at them so they taste great with everything from light, white fish through to rich and meaty beef dishes.

Use them in place of mashed potatoes, as a base for salad dishes, as a substitute for mince, add to soups, stews, and casseroles or mix with a little half fat crème fraiche, mint or flat leaf parsley and lemon juice and serve with a hot smoked fillet of salmon on top.

Oats are good for us and oat bran in many ways is even better, because it is lower in calories and even higher in protein and cholesterol-lowering fibre. In fact, just one 40g serving of oat bran contains 83% of the recommended daily amount (3g) of betaglucan – a soluble fibre that binds with excess cholesterol and removes it from our blood stream.

Rapeseed oil

This oil contains the lowest saturated fat content of any oil, has 10 times more omega-3 than olive oil and is a good source of skinenhancing vitamin E. It also has a high “smoke point” which means its nutritional value is maintained, even during cooking at high temperatures. Blend with tinned chick peas and tahini paste to make a super healthy and delicious hummus. Drizzle a little over salads, pasta or risottos, mix with lemon juice, garlic and balsamic to make a salad

Oat bran

This high fibre content is great for making you feel full for up to four hours after eating too. Oat bran is creamy in texture so it goes down effortlessly and makes a great thickener for soups, stews and casseroles. Add it to home made breads, muffins, biscuits and pancakes or sprinkle it on top of your usual breakfast cereal. l Tinned wild salmon

There are so many health benefits associated with

eating this fish – it reduces cholesterol, protects heart health, reduces the risk of stroke, helps prevent immune and inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease, minimises the risk of some mental disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and is essential in infant brain and eye development during pregnancy and nursing.

Top Irish writer Maeve Binchey will write no more

A favourite authoress died this week … a best selling writer who sold over 40 million books. Best-selling Irish author Maeve Binchy has died aged 72 after a short illness. She is survived by her husband. Binchy received a lifetime achievement award from the Irish Book Awards in 2010, the same year her last novel, Minding Frankie, was published. She published a personal message on her website thanking fans who had praised the work: "My health isn't so good these days and I can't travel around to meet people the way I used to. But I'm always delighted to hear from readers, even if it takes me a while to reply," she said. Irish politicians paid

tribute to her on Twitter after news of her death. Meath East TD Regina Doherty tweeted: "Godspeed Maeve Binchy RIP lovely warm gentle lady brought much joy through all her work."Fine Gael's Jerry Buttimer wrote that he was "so sad" to hear of her death. Maeve Binchey was born in Dalkey, Co Dublin and has sold more than 40 million books, translated into 37 languages. Many of them were stories set in her native Ireland including The Lilac Bus plus Tara Road and Circle of Friends that were turned into films.

She trained as a teacher before turning to writing, publishing her first novel entitled Light A Penny Candle in 1982 – written in her spare time while working as a journalist on The Irish Times. In a BBC interview in 2001 after she had won the W H Smith Book Award For Fiction, she described the first five rejections she received for the book as “a slap in the face,” but said she was glad she stuck with it and sent her manuscript to a sixth publisher who took her on. The authoress said that her secret was to write the way she spoke. "I don't say I was proceeding down a

thoroughfare, I say I walked down the road. I don't say I passed a hallowed institute of learning I say I passed a school. You don't wear all your jewellery at once – you're much more believable if you talk in your own voice," she said. In 2000, Binchy was ranked third in the World Book Day poll of favourite authors – ahead of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. BBC Dublin correspondent Ruth McDonald said Binchy's warm, witty, perceptive stories, were read and enjoyed around the world and that she was

David Barby dies Who was that girl? Warwickshirebased television antiques expert David Barby has died after a short illness. Mr Barby, 63, from Rugby, suffered a stroke last week and died in hospital in Coventry on Wednesday. He was best known for appearances on BBC shows like Bargain Hunt and recently in a vintage car on the Antiques Road Trip where he was often paired with Scottish expert Anita Manning. He appeared in the first episode of Flog It in 2002. Colleagues have described him as an 'Ambassador for antiques'. Mr Barby first became interested in antiques as boy growing up in Rugby. He qualified aged 21 and began working for a local firm. After a brief stint in London, Mr Barby returned to Warwickshire in 1978 to work at a Leamington auction house where he would eventually become a

partner in the business. He also founded a valuation company, David J Barby and Associates, in Rugby. A statement from the programme's team read: "His sense of fun, gentle personality and great knowledge of and passion for antiques, endeared him to the hundreds of people he worked with and millions of viewers at home. David was an ambassador for antiques on TV and loved every minute spent making the many episodes of Bargain Hunt, Flog It, Antiques Road Trip and more. We all remember David with great fondness, and send our condolences to his family and many friends in the antique trade and beyond."

After all the hype that has surrounded the security, or lack of it at the Olympic Games, the question everyone was asking after the opening ceremonony was “Who was that woman in the red top and turquoise trousers?” who was walking alongside the Indian flagbearer. Even the little girl carrying the copper vessel was giving her a funny look but, not one person actually challenged her at the time. True there’d have been a bit if a kerfuffle but, better that than a

renowned for her generosity and support of others, writing in a guide for aspiring writers: "The most important thing to realise is that everyone is capable of telling a story. It

doesn't matter where we were born or how we grew up. It's like if you don't go to a dance you can never be rejected but you'll never get to dance either," she said.

A real lady Doreen Lawrence, mother of murdered Stephen Lawrence was met with cheers as she took the Olympic flame to the Learning Centre in Deptford, South London, that had been set up in Stephen’s name. But that wasn’t the only part the 59-year-old lady had to play in the Olympic Games.

lunatic with a bomb. Turns out, according to Olympics officials that she was one of the cast for the opening ceremony and had just become “over exhuberant”. They said that, because she had already been security cleared, there was no risk. You think?!

She, along with seven other people, was selected to carry the Olympic Flag into the Opening Ceremony on Friday night. The brave mother was selected because of her marathon campaign to bring her son’s killers to

justice and she positively beamed as she carried the flag into the arena. She could teach a lot of people a thing or two about dignity in the face of adversity.

Fuengirola

I was somewhat amazed and perplexed at both comments from Kym Wickham and Amy Thomas regarding that wonderful TV Show “Superstar”.

musicians, out of this world dancers and production staff. Lovely to be away from so many of these shows with singers mouthing the words to backing tapes.

Having worked in the entertainment business for many years as an agent and promoter before retiring, it is quite obvious that neither of you have very little interest in live entertainment. I watched every show of this wonderful series. Shame it had to be on ITV where we had to watch the same tedious adverts during the show. However, someone has to pay the bills for brilliant

Amy, I cannot agree with your statement: “None of these guys can sing”. This, in my book is a total insult to some very hardworking and talented lads. My only gripe is so many artists today sing with a mike right up to their mouth. You watch any top international singers, and you see exactly what I mean. Sorry, but it is a pet hate of mine.

Joan Jackson Well I can honestly say I was amazed at this article!! Has Amy got a problem with her ears? How old is she 90+ or does she not hear pure good talent. The Superstar programme had 10 finalists all capable of being "Jesus". A lot of people in the "Real World" enjoy music, these guys

Peter Uppal I have a house in your area of Spain and always read your paper when I’m there but, of course, when I’m back in the Uk unless someone kindly thinks to bring me one over, I can’t get hold of it in paper so ever week I read your “virtual newspaper” on your website so I can keep up with things. What a bonus it is to us that live in two places. Anyway, the point of my

Stargazing

The less said about the panel of judges the better. “Dawn French” do me a favour. Finally Ms Holden compering the show drove me crazy with that “Give it up” every time an artist was taking their applause. Made it sound like a third rate Working Men’s Club.

If you would like to be kept up to date or take part in any of the events then go to www.kencampbell.info

By the way, had a bet with my wife on the first night when I picked the winner. Good luck Ben you are going to be a big star. Remember you heard it in The News!

I had an email from someone last week asking what the two bright ‘stars’ are that can be seen in the east just before sunrise. They are not stars; the upper one is Jupiter while the lower much brighter one is Venus.

Venus & Jupiter

Editor says: Erm.... so you agreed with what I said then? Ms Holden was awful!

by email were brilliant so hard to pick an outstanding winner, she must certainly have been in different karaoke bars to me to compare them to karaoke singers!!! Sad she has to slag off some talented musicians and Andrew Lloyd Webber is an absolute brilliant musician, his track record aside. The world needs more music,

Amy needs to go to London and absorb some of the fantastic energy and see so many happy people really appreciating these shows. Life is tough at the moment for a lot of people so seeing happy singing people makes all happy, apart from Amy!!!!!! Regards a suprised and saddened reader .

Basingstoke, UK letter is to say how wonderful it is to read someone with a bit of common sense. To whom am I referring? Amy Thomas of course! I see she has had some criticism of late but, who are these people? Do they actually read her articles properly? I have to say that I seem to be on entirely the same wavelength as the wonderful Ms Thomas and agree that the latest ITV offering of “Superstar” with Ms Holden was awful, as

were the pick of judges. What were they thinking of?! Anyway, keep up the good work Amy, we love you here in the UK and take no notice of your detractors – they clearly haven’t got a clue!! Editor says: Well, there’s a thing. Letters for and against Amy Thomas’ opinions. At least we can’t ignore her, she generates thinking and, like Muriel Pilkington, she’s never boring. We all love her here too Mr Uppal!

Beatriz Valasquez I just read the article in your column about dogs helping diabetics.I am diabetic. I have Diabetes Type I and I've been diabetic for many many years. I am in my 50s and I have to take insulin 2 or 3 times a day.I know exactly what it means not being able to prevent or to get help when you have "low levels of sugar". I had a terrible experience a year and a half ago. I woke up with half of my body already paralyzed. I could not speak and I could not swallow anything. I was extremely lucky that my husband was beside me and he was not away on a business

Fuengirola

trip. So, I really think that dogs have a special sense for these things and they can help diabetics.I have a white West Highland Scottish terrier. He is 3 years old and he sleeps with us on our bed.The day of that episode, he just knew something was wrong and he did not bark or did anything when the paramedics arrived. I would love to meet or contact Mrs.Nina Bondarenko and get some orientation or help her in any way possible. By the way, I am Spanish and I live in Fuengirola. I can send you more details if needed.

I

t was only last month that we were watching Venus as it passed in front of the Sun during the transit of Venus and now it has moved around in its orbit and is now at its most extreme point to the right of the Sun. Over the next few months Venus will continue on its journey appearing to move closer towards the rising Sun until it disappears behind the Sun early in the new year.

V

enus is the brightest object in the night sky after the Moon and has often been mistaken for an aeroplane landing lights and in some cases even a UFO. In 1969 US President Jimmy Carter reported seeing a UFO which turned out to be Venus. There are several reasons why Venus appears so bright, it is the closest planet to the Earth, it is completely swathed in a blanket of highly reflective clouds and it is the closest planet in size to the Earth being just a little smaller.

I

t is closer to the Sun than Earth and so a year on Venus lasts for only 224 earth days compared to our 365 days. Because of this position in the solar system, when we observe Venus through a telescope it displays phases similar to those of the Moon. At the moment Venus is at its most extreme point to the right of the Sun and so through a telescope it appears as half full. The side facing the Sun is being lit while the other side is in darkness. As it moves around to the far side of the Sun more and more of the illuminated face will become visible but of course it will gradually appear to get smaller as it moves further away from us.

W

hen Galileo saw Venus through the very first telescope in 1610 he was baffled by the changing phases because at the time it was believed that the Earth was at the centre of the universe and everything else moved around us. If this were the case then Venus would not display the phases! Even with a pair of

binoculars you should be able to detect the half lit crescent shape of Venus.

M

oving up slightly from Venus is Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar System. Jupiter is so big that it could fit every other planet inside it and still have room. But unlike the Earth, Jupiter is not made of rock. Jupiter is just a giant ball of mainly hydrogen gas; there is no solid surface to the planet. It is hard to imagine a world made up purely from gas that is being held together simply by the gravity exerted by each individual atom.

T

hrough a telescope Jupiter displays different coloured bands running parallel to the equator and circling the whole planet. Nobody is really sure why these bands are there or why they are different colours. Inexplicably the northern most band completely disappeared a couple of years ago then after about a year is suddenly reappeared again as quickly as it had gone. Again no one was able to offer a suitable explanation as to where it went to and why. Jupiter is still full of mystery.

A

nd one of the biggest mysteries about Jupiter is what exactly is the great red spot? In the middle of the southern band crossing Jupiter is a giant red spot. The spot is 10 times bigger than the earth and has been observed for over 400 years. It appears to be a storm that is raging in the upper cloud belts and revolving in an anticlockwise direction. Space probes sent to Jupiter have examined the spot in close up detail but I’m afraid we are no nearer to explaining what it is or indeed why it is red.

W

atch out for the International Space Station as it passes directly over southern Spain next Tuesday 7th August at 22.24 heading from Southwest to Northeast. Enjoy your Stargazing!

Land Rover revealed as the UK’s least reliable car Britain’s Land Rover is the least reliable car on the road, according to a study of used vehicles.Land Rover’s luxury-car stable-mate Jaguar also scores badly.By contrast, Honda has been named the most reliable make for the seventh year in a row.Only 10 per cent of used Hondas break down each year, compared with 71 per cent of Land Rovers, a figure described in the report as ‘shocking’.The report, by consumer experts What Car? and repair-cover firm Warranty Direct, is based on 50,000 extended warranty policies on used cars between three and ten years old.

Hamilton still in the hunt for title Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, prolonging McLaren`s dominance on the slow and winding Hungaroring circuit. Hamilton completed Sunday`s race in 1 hour, 41 minutes, 5.503 seconds more than a second ahead of Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen. Romain Grosjean, also of Lotus, was third. It was McLaren`s sixth win

here in eight years. Ferrari`s Fernando Alonso, who finished fifth, leads the championship with 164 points, followed by the Red Bull duo of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton is fourth. Vettel finished fourth, with Hamilton`s teammate Jenson Button sixth after a difficult race.

Williams driver Bruno Senna was seventh, his best result since April`s Chinese Grand Prix, with Webber eighth and Alonso`s teammate Felipe Massa ninth. Nico Rosberg took the final point in tenth place after a tough day for Mercedes that saw his teammate Michael Schumacher retire late in the race after his chances of points were wiped out and the race cut to 69 laps from 70 after an extra parade lap was added due to Schumacher stalling on the grid. The Hungaroring race is the last event before a month-long summer break, resuming with the Belgian Grand Prix on September. 2nd.

On parade in La Cala Among the members of Sol Classic Car Club who turned out in support of the La Cala Lions last week to take part in the annual parade on Feria opening night were Tom and Ros Commander in their eyecatching 1948 Bentley Mark VI Special. The 64year-old car had been driven down to France for a rally earlier in the summer and had then made the journey down to Spain for a few weeks holiday before returning to

the UK. The sunny summer evening set off its pristine red and green paintwork and the oldfashioned horn turned many heads in the waiting crowd. Also on parade were an MGB Roadster, a Porsche 911 3.6 Turbo and a Rolls Royce Silver Spur which once belonged to the Sultan of Bahrain. The cars proved very popular with old and young alike, though the longer-thanexpected amble round the

streets – with rather a lot of stops for demonstrations by musicians, fencers and martial artists – was rather a challenge and by the end more than one engine was getting somewhat warmer than it should! Sol Classic Car Club is taking a break in August because of the heat but activities will resume in September. For more information look at their website www.solclassiccarclub.net By Jean Joss

thrilling victory in the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix on Sunday before a crowd of 52,677. He passed MotoGP points leader Jorge Lorenzo on the 21st lap and sped to his fourth victory of his final season on the world's top motorcycle circuit. Last year, Stoner passed Lorenzo on the outside at Turn 1 on Lap 27. This time, Stoner took him on the inside at the same turn and won the 32lap race on the twisting 2.238-mile course. Stoner bided his time before making his move on the Spaniard. Unlike the other leaders, Stoner had

chosen softer tyres on his Honda, then had to spend much of

the race trying to conserve them. He soon got past Dani Pedrosa into second place, then decided to back off to protect his tyres. He finally made his move, sensing that the tyres on Lorenzo's Yamaha were degrading. "Jorge's bike started to slide a bit more," he said. "I

Fred Couples dream N.E.B.S Golf Society play debut at Senior Open at Atalaya Old Course Many a fans’ favourite American Fred Couples birdied Turnberry’s closing two holes to seal a dream debut victory in The 2012 Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex, finishing two shots clear of compatriot Gary Hallberg following a dramatic final round. Couples, who had trailed overnight leader Bernhard Langer by one shot going into the final round, took advantage of the German’s slip on the back nine to capture the title with a closing round of three under par 67. The pair had traded blows before the turn and were tied for the lead when Couples birdied the 11th hole, before the vital swing which came at the next hole when Langer found trouble from the tee. He hit a second shot into a bunker and was unable to advance, before then two putting from 25ft to card a double bogey six. Meanwhile

Sixteen players made the trip to Atalaya Old Course in very hot conditions. The course, as always, was in tip-top condition. Results as follows: Nearest the pin hole two Brian Millwood, Hole seven Mark Edmunson,

Couples birdied the same hole after a glorious five iron approach to six feet to seize the outright lead. Although he dropped a shot on the next hole, the United States Ryder Cup Assistant Captain produced a stunning finish to pull clear of Hallberg, who had birdied the 17th himself to set the clubhouse target of seven under par 273 following a superb four under par 66. Taking a one shot lead on to the final hole, Couples knew he needed to avoid dropping a shot to clinch the title, and the 1992 Masters Champion showed his class, sinking a majestic 20 footer to clinch

Daley and partner Pete Waterfield – roared on by a vocal home crowd – had been leading the competition against rivals China’s Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan for the first half of the event’s six dives. But a pair of errors – most notably on their reverse three-and-a-half somersault dive – saw the pair plunge from first to fourth place. It was a blow from which they never recovered, and the

Lizzie Armitstead won Britain's first medal of the 2012 Olympics as Netherlands' Marianne Vos claimed gold in the women's road race on Day Two. Armitstead took silver with Russian Olga Zabelinskaya third in a thrilling rain-soaked race that ended in a sprint finish on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace. The trio formed a breakaway group after the Dutch team had set to work early on to soften up the opposition with one probing attack after another, with Ellen van Dijck most prominent and Vos herself stepping in. Vos made one move which truly counted, on the little climb at Headley after the second and final ascent of Box Hill, which saw surprisingly little decisive action considering its reputation and the massive crowds gathered there for the second day in a row. As the Dutchwoman sprang away, Armitstead was quick to respond and the pair were joined by the American Shelley Olds before catching the Russian Olga Zabelinksaya, who had leapt away on the descent from Box Hill. The sprint on The Mall had all the look of a mere formality, although Vos paid tribute to Armitstead, who did everything right, keeping

Tom Daley Twitter abuse: Boy arrested in Weymouth A teenager has been arrested by police investigating abuse of Team GB diver Tom Daley on Twitter. After coming fourth in the men's synchronised 10m platform diving event on Monday, the 18-year-old from Plymouth received a message telling him he had let down his father, Rob. Rob Daley died in May 2011 from brain cancer. A 17-year-old boy was arrested at a guest house in the Weymouth area on suspicion of malicious communications. Dorset Police said they acted after being contacted by a member of the public at about 22:30 BST on Monday. A spokesman was unable to confirm whether the arrest was specifically over the tweets to Daley or subsequent Twitter conversations with other users.

"I knew I had a big chance but, if I made a little mistake, Lizzie would take gold." In the event she launched her sprint at the perfect moment in the final 200 metres – Zabelinskaya had been clearly the weakest and had looked resigned to bronze for the final 20 kilometres – and, although Armitstead responded sharply, she was able to do no more than claw her way towards Vos's back wheel and she finished over a bike length behind.

Beeb apologise cycling coverage

for

Olympic officials have blamed disruptions to television coverage of the cycling road races on spectators using Twitter. The BBC was forced to

apologise after viewers were left without information on timing and the positions of the competitors after electronic updates failed to reach the commentators. The problems, which hit both the men's and women's races, resulted in commentator Chris Boardman having to use his watch to estimate the timings of the cyclists. After the BBC pointed the finger at the Olympic Broadcasting Service (OBS), the International Olympic Committee responded by claiming that it was actually fans posting updates on Twitter while watching the race that caused the problems. The IOC said that the spike of Twitter messages had interfered with the transmission of race information, which is sent to organisers by GPS transmitters in the competitors' bikes.

Teenage Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen is not a drug cheat, the British Olympic Association's chairman has said, after a US coach cast doubt on her world recordbreaking swim. Lord Colin Moynihan said Ye, 16, had passed drug tests, was "clean" and deserved recognition for her talent.Ye smashed her personal best by at least five seconds in the 400m Medley. Senior US coach John Leonard said her performance was disturbing and hinted that doping could have been involved.
