NATIONAL NEWS - ONE OF THE BIGGEST INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS TO DATE

Russians charged over 'al-Qaeda plot' Two Russian men believed to be of Chechen origin have been charged with being members of an armed terrorist organisation and being in possession of explosives. The two men were travelling by bus from Cadiz to Irun near the French border when they were seized in a lay-by near Almuradiel by a police special operations group.

A Turkish national – named by El Pais as Cengiz Yalcin – was arrested at a flat in La Linea 24 hours later and charged with possession of explosives. Interior Minister Jorge

Fernandez Diaz said the arrests were part of one of the biggest international operations against alQaeda to date. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

I have had a number of emails referring to my column last week in which I said how helpful Monarch’s Customer Services manager was. It would seem that there is a vast difference between such departments ranging from the really good, as Chalene Kane of Monarch was, to the downright terrible. It is such a pity that, when we are in the financial state of the world and the lack of job availability that some people think it is still quite OK to be rude to customers. The fact is that if someone has taken the time to complain, whether it be for goods or services, they’re going to be pretty upset before they pick up the phone. A nice, soothing and helpful tone can make all the difference between repeat trade and them going elsewhere. I had a chap on this week who complained about where we had placed a death notice for Tony Million last week saying that we should put them in classifieds. Well, at one time we did that and got complaints that nobody saw them, so now we put them on Community News where they will be seen by the person’s community. We put these in free of charge – to charge them for it would be wrong, in my opinion. So, we do try our best but can’t please everybody I’m afraid. Winners of the survey draw are Kirstie dougal and Jo Taylor.

'al-Qaeda plot' He said the men reportedly received training at camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan and are thought to have links with a cell called LET (Lashkar-e-Taiba, Army of the Righteous in Arabic), which was responsible for the 2008 bombings in Bombay that left 170 dead. The minister said the three men are believed to have been planning an attack in Spain or elsewhere in Europe. National newspapers reported on Monday that they had planned to release a small bomb over Gibraltar. The Russians were carrying documents about piloting light planes when they were arrested, but the authorities have not confirmed the newspaper report. However, they had been seen flying motorized paragliders on several occasions, and the police believe they planned to use these crafts to launch an attack from the air. They also pointed out that the area

where the suspects had been residing is close to the Spanish-American military base at Rota. The minister said the men were "extremely dangerous people", and that one of them was "a very important operative in al-Qaeda's international structure". The Turkish national, who is suspected of being a facilitator for the group rather than a member himself, was jailed on Friday but Judge Pablo Ruz granted police 48 additional hours to provide evidence to justify the detention of the two

Russian suspects. They were driven to court early on Sunday, escorted by masked police officers. Sr Fernandez said material seized at the Turkish man's flat was sent for testing and was thought to be enough to "destroy a bus". Cengiz Yalcin told police he had befriended the two Russians in Turkey and that they had come to Spain to seek asylum. In March, Spanish police arrested a suspected alQaeda member in the eastern city of Valencia on terrorism charges.

Fire destroys unique flora A fire in the Garajonay National Park on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands has destroyed more than 9,900 acres of land, including part of a UN World Heritage site. The park is home to hundreds of plant species, some of which are unique to the island in the Atlantic. Local residents were evacuated after the fire erupted on Saturday. Firefighters managed to stop the progress of the blaze by Monday evening by using water-dropping

aircraft but said La Gomera's difficult terrain – particularly the island's deep ravines – had made it difficult to tackle the blaze. "The ravines act as genuine chimneys for the fire when the wind blows," the head of the regional government, Paulino Rivero, told reporters. He said the firefighters suspect the blaze was started deliberately. A fire on the neighbouring island of La Palma was also contained on Monday. Firefighters on the Canary Islands and mainland Spain have been

Health care workers PP down, Socialists protest against stay the same immigrants’ exclusion The latest survey by the Sociological Research Centre (CIS) shows that the popularity of the Partido Popular has dropped by 11 per cent since last November’s election, with 36.6 per cent of people saying they would vote for the party if an election were held soon.

Nearly 1,000 health care workers nationwide have signed forms distributed by the Society of Family and Community Medicine (Semfyc) to register as conscientious objectors to protest against a new law to be passed this week that requires them to deny treatment to illegal immigrants. The law, which comes into effect on September 1st, strips illegal immigrants of their right to

free health care unless they are under 18, pregnant, or in cases of emergency. Doctors, nurses and other health care professionals have slammed the measure as "unethical" and "inhumane". The Medical College said the new law "violates the ethical principles of medicine and the code of professional ethics". The Spanish Association of Neuropsychiatry said it

marked: "A regression in human rights". Some 300 patient associations, immigrant advocacy groups and health workers unions have also rejected the move. Some regional governments have said they will defy the central government and will continue to provide free basic care and medicines to those who need them, irregardless of their residency status.

The government’s 2013-2014 budget programme which it delivered to Brussels last Friday, includes legal reforms that will affect the retirement age and speed up the date for implementing changes, now set for 2027. These include restricting access to early and partial retirement, and implementing the new retirement age faster as well as different parameters for calculating pensions. Pensions are the biggest item in the budget. This year, the government will pay out €120 billion, representing around a quarter of all spending and over 10 percent of the nation’s GdP. These figures will continue to rise, to an estimated 15 per cent of GdP, as baby boomers born in the 1960s reach their retirement age.

The USA and France have said the defection of Syrian Prime Minister Riad Hijab is a sign that the regime of President Bashar al-Assad is crumbling. White House spokesman Jay Carney said such highlevel defections signalled that President Assad's grip on power was "loosening". "If he cannot maintain cohesion within his own inner circle, it reflects on his inability to maintain any following among the Syrian people that isn't brought about at the point of a gun.” He said the momentum is with the opposition and with the

Syrian people. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the latest defection was another sign of the regime weakening and losing support. He said in a statement: "France is convinced the Assad regime is doomed." Several police officers were suspended after being accused of parading a couple naked in public. Witnesses said police in the Sindh town of Gambat forced the man and woman to walk to the police station naked as punishment for trying to have sex outside marriage. Mobile phone footage shows a naked man being beaten by police and a woman begging them to let her cover herself. After a public outcry, officials suspended the officers involved. Standard Chartered accused of money laundering Shares of Standard Chartered bank tumbled in Hong Kong on Monday despite its having denied allegations that it illegally "schemed" with Iran to launder money. The New York State Department of Financial Services said the UK-based bank, which it described as a “rogue institution”, laundered as much as

$250bn (£161bn) over nearly a decade. It also said the bank had hidden 60,000 secret transactions with "Iranian financial institutions" that were subject to US economic sanctions. The bank has strongly rejected “the position or portrayal of facts” issued by the regulator, saying it did not present "a full and accurate picture".

The regulator also accused the bank of falsifying Swift wire payment directions by stripping the message of unwanted data that showed the clients were Iranian, replacing it with false entries. In March 2001, Standard Chartered's legal advisor counselled that "our payment instructions (for

A farmer in Vermont who was facing a minor drugs charge is now in more serious trouble after driving a tractor over seven police cars, before making his getaway on the farm vehicle. roger Pion, 34, was stopped by police in Newport city, northern Vermont, not far from the crime scene. Sheriff's deputies were unaware of the destruction in their department car park until a resident called 911. Orleans County Sheriff Kirk Martin said they were initially unable to give chase as their cars had been wrecked. No-one was injured in the incident.

Obama calls for 'soul searching' President Barack Obama said on Monday that "soul searching" is needed on how to reduce violence following a second mass shooting event in the US in a month. Wade Michael Page, 40, killed six and injured three at a Sikh temple in near Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Sunday. He was shot dead by police in the temple's car park during the attack. Officials are investigating reports that Page had white supremacist links, and the

FBI is treating the attack as possible domestic terrorism. A civil rights group, the Southern Poverty Law Centre, described Page as a "frustrated neo-Nazi who had been the leader of a racist white-power band". It said he left his native Colorado and joined a skinhead music group, End Apathy, in 2005. The temple attack follows a shooting in Aurora, Colorado at a

midnight screening of the new Batman film on July 20th. Twelve people were killed and 58 were injured in the attack. Mr Obama has pledged to work with members of both political parties and civic organisations to reach a consensus on the matter, but has not given details. Debate on gun control issues has featured very little during the US presidential campaign so far, which has been focusing on the economy.

Kenya accuses diplomat of ambassador’s murder Venezuelan diplomat Dwight Sagaray has been charged with the murder of the acting ambassador in Kenya, Olga Fonseca. Sagaray, who was the Venezuelan embassy's first secretary, appeared before a judge in Nairobi on Monday and was remanded in custody. He has denied the charge. Olga

Fonseca was found strangled to death at her official residence in Nairobi on July 27th. Judge Florence Muchemi also charged and issued an arrest warrant for Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed Hassan, who went missing after the murder. Kenyan police said Mr Hassan, a Kenyan citizen of

Somali origin, is a close friend of Mr Sagaray. Two other people – Kenyan security guards Eliud Kimutai and Bernard Owino – were charged last week with failing to use any reasonable means to stop the murder. Ms Fonseca, 57, had started her new role in Nairobi on July 15th.

UK News More bad weather and flooding for UK Emergency services in Nailsea, north Somerset received around 80 calls for assistance following widespread torrential rain which caused flooding and landslips in the area over the weekend. Fire crews spent the night pumping water from homes and a specialist crew were called to a landslip in Portbury near Bristol to make sure that no-one had been trapped underneath. Further serious flooding hit the Scottish Borders with the town of Jedburgh being badly hit after a river broke its banks, flooding the town’s high street and several homes in the area. Rescuers also went to

the aid of two people after their vehicle became trapped in water at Redpost near Bude, Cornwall. Further amber warnings were issued by the Met Office for the rest of the weekend, continuing into the early part of this week for Cornwall, Somerset and Devon as well as parts of west Wales. Last month two people were killed after being buried in a landslide in Beaminster, Dorset, Their bodies remained undiscovered for 10 days following the landslide that is believed to have been caused by recent torrential rains undermining the land in the area.

More investment needed The head of the British Olympic Association has said that there needs to be more funding of school sports and improved facilities if children are to be inspired by team GB’s gold medals to become the future star athletes themselves. Lord Moynihan’s warning comes amid predictions of cuts in

Government spending for sports when funding is reviewed after the Games. Olympics organisers have praised the British public for coming out in force to support the British teams with more than half a million spectators turning out last Friday, including 221,000 at the Olympic Park in east London.

Two men who were arrested over the suspected illegal importation of a piece of Sadam Hussein’s buttock from a bronze statue from Iraq have been released without charge. Jim Thorpe, 67 and Nigel Ely, 52, had been questioned about plans to sell the piece after the Iraqui government asked Derbyshire police to investigate in January this year. A police spokesman said the piece of statue had not been recovered and there was “doubt about its authenticity”.

The Royal Mail are to produce a stamp to celebrate the Gold Medal Olympic win of 25-year-old long-jumper from Milton Keynes Greg Rutherford, who won Britain’s 13th gold medal of the London 2012 Games. Last Saturday, Rutherford became the first Briton since Lynn Davies in 1964 to win the title. The stamp will be the 13th gold medal stamp to be released by the Royal Mail. The women’s pursuit team gold medal cyclists,

Dani King from Southampton, Laura Trott from Cheshunt, Herts, and Joanna Roswell from Cheam, London have already been celebrated on a stamp after clocking 3 minutes 14.051 seconds to beat the world record they set in the first round. The US came second, more than 5 seconds behind the Brits. The stamps will be on sale from next Saturday. Royal Mail said they will also paint one of the postboxes in Rutherford’s home town to mark the victory.

However, a postbox 'wrongly' painted gold in honour of Olympic champion Liz Trott will keep its new colour.Royal Mail painted the postbox in Harlow after Laura Trott won a gold medal in the Olympic team pursuit contest with Dani King and Joanna Rowsell. But Trott, who was born in the town, then tweeted her hometown was in fact Cheshunt, in Hertfordshire. Harlow Council asked the Royal Mail to leave the postbox gold.

Special Feature Search goes on for missing Cool cocktails and a hot show 12-year-old girl Police are asking for assistance in tracing a twelve-year-old girl who went missing on Friday afternoon in New Addington, south London. Tia Sharp was last seen leaving her grandmother’s home saying that she was going to the Whitgift Centre in the centre of Croydon and has not been seen since. It is understood that she had been given £10 by her step-grandfather, Stuart Hazell, to buy shoes with but had left her Oyster travel card and her mother’s mobile phone (borrowed because hers was broken) at her grandmother’s house. She is known in the Croydon, Mitcham and Wimbledon areas but police said it is totally out of character for the youngster to wander off on her own. A police spokesperson said that officers from the missing persons unit and the local borough are making enquiries to try to track her down including checking CCTV footage in the area and liaising with other forces.

After their spectacular opening last week, Rodizio Macarena has been inundated with calls from people wanting to know when they are open, when the show is and details of the fayre. Well, here is the eagerly sought after information plus more – Rodizio Macarena is open every day from 7p.m. until midnight and the floor show begins at 9p.m. every night!

However, Tia cannot be found on any CCTV footage for the day and was only found on footage from the day before from a shop’s security camera on her way to her grandmother’s for the weekend. He added that Tia had not gone missing before “so this is of concern.” Her mother’s partner, David Niles, said the family were at their “wit’s end” after reporting Tia missing at around 6pm on Friday adding: “Please keep searching for my little girl.” Around 200 people gathered near the girl’s home on Saturday to try and help in the search for her and Facebook social networking site has around

2,500 member trying to help. Meanwhile Twitter has been flooded with appeals from family members, friend and celebrities to help locate the twelve-year-old. Detectives will be keen to press Mr Hazell for every detail of his last conversation with Tia and what her precise plans were. She had travelled some of the way there from her own home in Mitcham, South London, before being met by Mr Hazell in Croydon to continue her journey to New Addington. She was wearing a yellow T-shirt and grey leopard-skin leggings and her glasses when she went missing.

Despite an economic crisis caused largely by overspending and too many public sector workers, most of the municipalities in Malaga province have decided to go ahead with reduced versions of their traditional August fairs. Smaller events, like the Peach Festival at Periana in the Axarquia, were dropped, as were the small street parties in some districts of Marbella, Ronda and Velez. In other towns, the residents and businesses are contributing what they can to keep the festivities alive because they bring in some money, even if not so much as in previous years. None of the towns is hiring expensive outside singers and orchestras this year, so local artists will benefit. Fireworks are the other victims of the cuts, with some towns eliminating the final display. Malaga’s internationally famous August Fair, which starts on Saturday will be one day shorter this year and there won’t be as many fireworks. Plans to limit the fair to the feria ground on the edge of the city were quashed by the tradesmen in the town centre, where the fair revolves around Calle Larios. But there won’t be so many bright lights in order to save on electricity. In all, the city council estimates these small cutbacks will save it half a million euros this year. Hotel and restaurants are very much in favour of keeping the fairs going because they’re good for tourism.

The Malaga fair in particular will get a shot in the arm – cruise ships carrying some 28,000 passengers will arrive in the port during the week of the fair.

Stolen baby cases to be investigated Malaga’s chief prosecutor, Juan Carlos López Caballero, said on Monday that all reports of stolen babies "should be investigated whether or not they could be verified because of lack of information and the time that has elapsed”. He said there were a large number of reports in Malaga of parents who had been told that their children died at birth, only to find out later that they were given in adoption to other couples. The oldest cases go back to the 1940s and the most recent ones date back to the 1990s. MALAgA

He is wanted in germany on charges of fraud relating to VAT returns. Fears for grape production Vineyard owners have warned that this year’s heat and lack of rain could drastically reduce the grape harvest this year. The president of the Serrania de ronda’s Vineyard Association, José María Losantos, said this spring’s scarce rainfall had caused the vines’ leaves to dry and fall prematurely, leaving the grapes unprotected which leads to their dehydration. He said the harvest began on August 25th last year but could be brought forward this year to save as many grapes as possible. The region’s budding wine industry has been producing 1.2 million bottles of mainly red wine. In normal conditions, a hectare of vines can produce 7,500 kilos of grapes which produce 6,000 litres of wine.

Memo from

Voice Madrid Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Lies, lies and more lies

Those men in black

I

N

sometimes think that lying is Spain’s national pastime. The politicians have it down to a fine art but then all the world’s politicians are the same so that’s not remarkable. Most lying is fairly harmless but when everyone around you is at it, it gets a bit worrying. We at The News found it irritating in a young Spaniard who used to work with us but I for one thought no more of it – until I realised that the other people who rent part of the house where I live were lying through their teeth as well, to the owners as well as myself. We had a hippy lady who gave away all the lemons, oranges and avocados in our quite extensive garden. A few tons of fruit simply disappeared overnight and when I tackled her about it she said the landlady’s son had told her she could do what she liked with the fruit.

A

ctually, he meant she could eat as much of it as she wanted – not hand it out to some 30 or so hippy friends. She then said the son himself had given all the fruit to his workmen – but he only has one man working for him and in any case, much as I love this young man, I’m afraid he wouldn’t give you a spot if he had the measles.

T

he current tenants told the landlady’s son there was only two of them – the married one claimed he was separated from his wife but would have a 3-year-old daughter visiting him from time to time. He turned up with his cousin as planned – plus wife, daughter and an 18-month son who were not part of the original picture.

B

ut our worst experience of this penchant for lying turned out to involve the lawyer who has been – allegedly – getting our severance pay from The Town Crier for the past three years and eight months. It was a messy case from the start and such cases can take up to two years to sort out, we were told.

B

y the end of last year we were getting a bit worried and started to get on top of this lawyer more. He finally told me in January that he had already sent all our papers to Fogasa, the Social Security’s emergency fund which eventually pays up to 70 per cent or so of the severance pay we should have received way back when.

B

y April, there was no sign of any money so I started to have serious doubts about the matter. I finally

went to the Fogasa office in Malaga, to be told that they hadn’t received any information about our case. I immediately confronted the lawyer with this little fact and that’s when he started conjuring up “bits of paper that the court hadn’t sent to him yet”. No apology for the whopper he told us back in January. In fact, I suspect he doesn’t even remember what he’d told us. That’s one good thing about telling the truth – you don’t have to remember which lies you told to whom!

A

nyway, to cut a long story short, it looks as if we’re finally in the works at Fogasa and should get a little windfall in about six weeks, the lawyer says. I will not be holding my breath because it will probably be more like three or four months, which is what he told us in the first place.

I

’m not going to accuse all lawyers of being liars but would advise you all to be very careful in your dealings with them. They tend to tell you what you want to hear, but do a bit of doublechecking just to be on the safe side. If your Spanish is not good enough and you’re dealing with a Spanish lawyer, who may or may not speak English, always take an interpreter to the meetings. It won’t cost you that much and could save you a lot of time and trouble.

I

n fact I would recommend an interpreter when dealing with Spanish bureaucracy for whatever reason. I don’t think the vast majority of Spanish public sector workers are liars but they have a horrible tendency to move the goalposts which can complicate matters when you’re trying to sort out anything to do with Social Security or anything medical.

I

’ve recovered from my disgust with our lawyer. I’m just looking forward to receiving his bill because I know exactly where I’m going to tell him to put it!

I

apologise for unloading some of our troubles on you all, but the politicians are on holiday until the end of the month. So we’ll have to put up with the silly season until Mariano Rajoy gets back to torment us all with further cuts.

I

t definitely looks as if it’s going to be a hot autumn, as the trade unions have promised.

ow people are asking when – no longer if – the bailout is coming. Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said this weekend that he believes Brussels won't be so hard on us because, as he puts it, Spain has already made the necessary adjustments to meet the European Union’s assistance conditions. Wishful thinking on his part, or maybe this is another one of the Popular Party's misleading statements to try to convince the few citizens who still believe in the conservatives when they say that all will be well after Spain joins the short list of nations that sought a handout. In his interview with ABC on Sunday, the economy chief also states that the government isn’t in any rush to seek cash from Brussels because it has enough money for the rest of the year to meet 70 per cent of its funding needs. But there are two things wrong with his statement. First, the Spanish government is not looking at the broader picture in the way it plans on obtaining that revenue. It hopes to cash in when value added tax goes up from 18 per cent to 21 per cent on September 1st, believing that people will be embarking on a spending spree soon after coming home from holidays. Secondly, the government will have to come up with some €100 billion to pay investors who bought short-term bonds that are due to mature in October. These imbalances in the government’s finances are even more complex when you factor in the assistance it plans on giving the regions to help them with their own cash-flow problems. And what about the other 30 per cent?

T

hose famous “men in black” who will be coming down from Brussels will be getting the shock of their lives when they start combing through the country’s financial statements. There is no way that Brussels will be handing out lumps of cash to the Spanish government without laying down a set of strict rules. It already did that once when Spain joined the European Union only to see billions of euros wasted on poorly planned infrastructure projects which became cash cows for party cronies who got fat construction contracts. Instead of using the EU money for developing industry for the future, such as R-D companies and innovative corporations, Spain sought the easy way out and concentrated on propping up the real estate sector that eventually went bust.

S

o what will these men in black be seeking? More cuts no doubt in the public sector, which will mean scaling back the number of civil servants and chopping a number of government services. Individual income tax will also have to be hiked as will property and luxury taxes. The entire financial scheme in the way the regions have been milking Madrid must be changed. Brussels will push for Constitutional reforms so that regional governments won’t have to depend on money from central government’s coffers. The pronationalist parties in Catalonia and the Basque Country indeed won’t be happy. Hikes in transport and road tolls will also have to be introduced.

P

rime Minister Mariano Rajoy believes that he can avoid this painful recipe of Brussels-imposed measures by introducing his own austerity package. He has been doing this over the past few weeks, including announcing last Friday some €83 billion in cuts over the next two years, before formally asking the European Commission for a rescue plan. But again, the EC is not going to hand out money on a platter to a government that has been so irresponsible in the past. The EU leaders do not trust Spain, a country that entirely lost what little credibility it had soon after Rajoy and Popular Party (PP) were swept into office, pledging one thing but actually doing the opposite.

O

ne matter is certain – I have said this in the past – the Rajoy government stands to collapse once this bailout is finally formalised. Even though the prime minister has an absolute majority in Congress to survive a confidence vote, cracks are beginning to show in the ranks. And this is already being forewarned across Europe and was in the case of a recent article in the English-language edition of Der Spiegel entitled “Spain’s economic arsonists”. “If Spain does indeed require the full programme of a European bailout, at an estimated cost of least €300 billion, and if the feared ‘men in black’ from the troika, consisting of the European Commission, the ECB and the International Monetary Fund, assume control, it will put an end to Rajoy's political career. A prominent former party member is already calling for early elections.” The candle is now burning at the other end.

Members of the Coin Branch of the Royal British Legion and a big congregation of friends sang a sad farewell in the Coin Cemetery Chapel on Friday 3rd August to their Honorary Vice President Sydney Knowles, who passed away peacefully at home on the 31st of July. Sydney was born in Preston, Lancashire and volunteered to join the Royal Navy in 1939, aged 18. He served in the North Atlantic aboard HMS Zulu during the hunt for the Bismarck and on HMS Lookout on transatlantic convoy duty and later on 'Operation Pedestal’, the famous Mediterranean convoy that broke the Siege of Malta in 1942. Later in 1942 Sydney volunteered to join a small squad of Navy divers led by Lt Cdr Lionel “Buster” Crabb. They were known as the Underwater Working Party and their task was to protect Allied shipping at anchor in

Gibraltar harbour against attack by Italian underwater saboteurs. Equipped with nothing but swimming trunks and primitive underwater breathing apparatus they worked in all weathers to search for mines beneath the hulls of ships at anchor. Buster’s expertise at rendering mines safe earned him a considerable reputation and Sydney accompanied him on many clandestine tasks as his diving partner both during and after the war. In 1958 Sydney was played by Michael Craig in the fictionalised film, The Silent Enemy, and on the

1st of October 2009 he published his book, A Diver in the Dark, which detailed several hairraising stories about his exploits with Crabb.

The Legion has lost a great man who served his country proudly and was regarded by those who knew him a true comrade and a friend.

Community News Big holiday next Date for fashion Help Desk expands show announced Wednesday Next Wednesday 15th August will be a national public holiday, not only here in Spain but throughout the global Catholic and large parts of the eastern and oriental orthodox Christian world. The holiday is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, or “The Assumption”, the day in which the Virgin Mary passed from the earth into heaven. According to Catholic Cannon (religious) law it is a day of obligation and is defined as follows;

“On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. Moreover they are to abstain from those works and affairs which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body”. Consequently, banks, offices and town halls and many shops will be closed although most bars and restaurants will remain open to refresh the faithful. written by Pete Woodall

Pet of the week

Neron Neron is a pure Dalmation boy. He is six and a half years old, fully vaccinated and castrated. His previous life was spent tied up for 8 hours a day in a mechanics garage. He is a strong and very active boy. He came to PAD in February this year and is very frustrated and unhappy in the kennels. He desperately needs a new home but it needs to be a special home with no other animals or children and lots of space and attention. If you can offer Neron the home he needs please contact Lisa on 658 351 642.

ray of Mediterranean light to the cities of Athlone and Galway thanks to the visit of one hundred primary and secondary Spanish school teachers from the Balearic Islands. The teachers will need English speaking volunteers to help them improve their listening and speaking skills. In exchange for their help, the volunteers will receive room and full board at the beautiful Hodson Bay Hotel, the Sheraton Hotel (Athlone) and the Galway Bay Hotel (Galway). The participants are a group of lucky teachers selected by the Spanish Ministry of Education to receive a scholarship to learn English in Ireland. They will share a week of experiences and fun living in the chosen venues with native English speaking volunteers. The event is made possible thanks to a programme designed by Pueblo Inglés, a Spanish company specialising in full immersion programmes since the year 2004. To fulfill the expectations – one English speaker for every Spanish speaker – Pueblo Inglés is inviting people interested in volunteering to take part in this unique experience. Age Care’s charity shop in El Zoco, Calahonda, has been extra busy this August due to all the holidaymakers who decided to escape the chaos (and the damp weather) of the UK during the Olympics, but also because of the preparation for the Annual Fashion Show in September. Beverley Morland, Shop Manager, said “We’ve been rushed off our feet sorting out the most generous donations for the shop and also getting ready for our Fashion Show in September which will be bigger and better than ever.” The Annual Fashion Show on Wednesday, 5th September, has been organised by Beverley Morland and continues to grow progressively each year to raise money for the Age Care Association, a fully registered caring organisation helping older people who may not always be able to help themselves. The fashion event will be hosted by a restaurant on Calahonda. The show starts at 2 pm but you shouldn’t be fashionably late, come early and enjoy the wonderful buffet served at 1 pm. As well as a chance to bag a bargain from high street brands available, there will be beautiful designer clothes from the UK, Spain and Italy. The carefully chosen collection includes clothes from designers such as Karen Miller, Simon Jeffreys and Gerry Webber. The show will feature shop volunteers modelling clothes from size 8 to 22. Christine Thompson, one of the volunteer shop assistants said “Beverley has found some lovely clothes for us to model and it has been fun accessorizing the outfits with items from the shop”. After the show you will be able to buy the clothes and accessories, including jewellery, shoes and hats. Don’t forget to bring some money to indulge in some great bargains. A regular shopper said: "I go to several dinner dances over the Christmas period where everyone gets

dressed up and if I can bag a bargain, I will be very happy." Tickets are €15, with €5 of the ticket price going to the Age Care Charity. Tickets available from the Age Care shop at El Zoco, Calahonda or telephone 675 874 308 to reserve tickets. Tickets are limited so early booking is recommended.

A new organisation is born A small group of pioneers who have lived and worked on the Costa realize there is a need for a Professional Association that cares for quality and honesty within the animal industries on the Costas. The APPC was founded in August 2012 by David the Dogman, Vivien Eales, Gary Joynson, Sabrina Wrench and Joanna Oxley to offer pet owners a guarantee of quality of people involved in the industries. The APPC Spain is proud of the fact that they assess all members according to a strict criteria which ensures they have the appropriate skills. They are required to keep their education up to date, and adhere to a Code of Practice. If any member is found to be in contravention of this Code then their membership is withdrawn. So often in the past

choosing a pet, vet, consultation, trainer, food, groomer, accessories etc has been pot luck. Damage can been done to an unsuspecting pet and owner before they can spot the danger or realise the discomfort it causes their pet. Training dogs has changed a great deal in the last few years. It is no longer necessary, or acceptable, to use harsh methods in training, and the use of gentle, motivational methods are as successful as they are enjoyable to use. Of course, all trainers use slightly different techniques when teaching pet owners to train their own dogs, but all members of The APPC use methods that are kind, fair and effective. We will tell you more about this exciting new group and what our aims are next week.

Holiday lets face fines Home owners who rent out their property or properties to holidaymakers could be in for a shock according to a recent warning from the British embassy in Madrid. The Embassy say they have recently become aware of home owners who have been fined up to 30,000 Euros for not having the correct permit to rent out their homes and have published the following guidelines on their website.

Short-term lets The regulations on letting tourist apartments (apartamentos turísticos) and holiday homes (viviendas vacacionales) vary by region. If you are planning on making a financial return by renting

out your existing property, or buying one to let, you are recommended to seek independent legal advice and check the local licensing laws with your local town hall (Ayuntamiento). This is particularly important in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands where the rental of holiday properties on a short-term basis is strictly regulated. The authorities in these areas are cracking down on homeowners who rent out their properties to tourists (particularly through online adverts) without complying with Spanish law. It is still possible, even in mid summer, to meander peacefully round the old part and discover some very quaint and friendly tapas bars and inexpensive restaurants while taking in the stunning views over the coast and Mediterranean from the balcony and gardens of the old church situated on the upper southern part of the town. With narrow winding streets, some of which still have their cobblestones, you can shelter from the heat of the sun and enjoy this old, typically Spanish town.

Two great gigs at JK’s, Coin We’ve all heard the expression “There but for the grace of God go I” and on Saturday August 8th local group Avant Garde are going to be doing something about it. A Spanish family has lost everything due to the recession. The dad lost his job, the family lost the house because there was no money coming in, and now they’ve been put in different places by the welfare system. We all know it’s tough at present and this same scenario – let’s face it – could happen to a lot of us through really none of our faults. It’s just the way life is at the moment. So, what is this to do with us? Well, we can all help in our own small way and that’s what Avant Garde have decided to do. They will be playing a benefit gig at JK’s in Coin for this unfortunate family. This ever popular band will be supplying the food too, and a percentage of all the bar takings will be donated by JK’s to the cause. this Watch what’s for space at JK’s on

New Farmers Market Mad Terry’s Birthday Bash Every Sunday at the inland town of Coin there is a big flea market starting at 10am and going on until 2pm under the shade of the La Trocha Commercial Centre on the Coin to Cartama road (A355) selling an amazing range of secondhand goods at bargain prices, plus there are jewellery stalls, kids toys, and all manner of things. Now, there is the addition of the Farmers Market that starts before the flea market at 9am. This local market began in the village and aims to bring incredibly fresh produce straight from local people’s

gardens and smallholdings in Coin and “to give an income to help them plus bring back the culture, economy, self confidence and joy of being a local community of inland Spain”. The organisers say that by coming along to the Farmers Market you will “contribute to the development of the local surroundings – your money stays in the local community. e Bourne Legacy

arilyn Monroe passed M away a half-century ago this Sunday, a murky

By Tony Gilroy Starring: Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weiz Tony Gilroy was one of the creative forces behind the plots for the first three Bourne movies. The franchise was hugely successful, taking almost $1 billion at the worldwide box office, so number four was always going to be on the cards. Original director Paul Greengrass hummed and ha’d, and Matt Damon, Bourne himself, was in the running to star in the fourth outing but pulled out when

Greengrass finally announced he would not be directing the latest instalment. Gilroy has stepped up to the plate and is co-writer as well as director for this hugely anticipated summer movie. We revisit the blockbuster series, still named after Jason Bourne but with a new key character in the shape of Aaron Cross (Renner), who starred in ‘The Hurtlocker’. The

movie’s trailer asserts: “Jason Bourne was just the tip of the iceberg”, and as Albert Finney reprises his role as Dr Albert Hirsch, the doctor who created the Treadstone programme, we can expect to visit some familiar territory. But Cross does not suffer from amnesia; he is not a man on a mission to discover who he is and what he has done. Cross willingly hands himself over to the agency that created Bourne,

but finally he finds himself on the run. Why? And will we find out more about the mysterious Government project? Expect high octane excitement and some great set pieces as Cross tries to outwit the agency operatives who are after him. A top cast and a director who knows the Bourne story inside out should make this a mustsee for Bourne fans.

e Flowers of War

e Assault

Starring: Christian Bale

Directed By: Julien Leclercq

It's 1937 and China is on the brink of collapse. Nanking is under siege from the Japanese Imperial Army, the streets awash with violence, the civilians desperate. The protective walls of a western church provide the only haven from the vicious battles outside. Here, an American John Miller (Christian Bale) caught in the midst of the chaos, joins a small group trying escape the violence wrought by the Japanese army.

On December 24, 1994, when four heavily armed terrorists from the Algerian Armed Islamic Group hijacked an Air France plane bound for Paris at Algiers' airport, the 227 passengers on board seemed destined for tragedy.

Through one act of heroism, this group of disparate refugees fight back, risking their lives for the sake of others and the

nation. Inspired by true events, Flowers Of War tells the incredible story of an unlikely group standing up against an unimaginable and overwhelming evil.

After hours of tireless negotiations the plane was granted permission to leave only to head to Marseille for refueling. Mindfully avoiding politics and emphasising only the events themselves, The Assault weaves together the violent and claustrophobic onboard drama, with backstories of

death that remains one of Hollywood's most tantalizing mysteries. But if we look around, her legend lives on, more vibrantly than ever. In a development this fiercely ambitious actress surely would have appreciated, the 1950's bombshell has become a 21st-century pop culture phenomenon. onroe may not have M been a great actress, it´s rumoured that she could never remember her lines (even when in front of her) and scenes would take forever to film, as she could never get a take right. That said, she was in some of the most classic movies of all time. Like "The Misfits," for example, and "Bus Stop." However, she is probably best remembered for her delightful comic turns in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" as the golddigging Lorelei Lee who sang "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" in that classic pink gown; as the sensuous but ditzy Girl in "The Seven Year Itch"; and as sexy band singer Sugar Kane in "Some Like it Hot" with Tony Curtis.

during the filming of "The Prince and the Showgirl". The movie is told through the eyes of Colin Clark and how he sees Marilyn and her estranged relationship with the director/actor Laurence Olivier. As the movie is only about some of the days Colin Clark spends with Marilyn, we don't get to see the whole drama inside her life. ichelle Williams plays M Marilyn in the film and she is truly incredible. While she provides a glimpse into some of the mannerisms of Monroe she never falls into mimicking the film icon which would be disrespectful. Williams actually portrays Norma Jean more than the iconic Marilyn. She delivers a compelling performance that simultaneously addresses the many reactions that Marilyn has evoked over the years. Williams seduces you but then also shows you Marilyn's tragic side that truly tears your heart out. She also shows you Marilyn's emotional and psychological problems thus foreshadowing her tragic ending.

arilyn was not just an M icon, but a role model for so many women.

tough SWAT officer and father Thierry (Vincent Elbaz), the determined jihadist from the slums of Algiers (Aymen Saidi), and an overly ambitious French Interior Ministry worker.

Madonna has copied Monroe´s image on various occasions, and of course Debbie Harry reckons she´s Marilyn’s illegitimate child. Ridiculous, I know! Marilyn has a softness to her, and innocence, something that actresses these days definitely don´t have. hich brings me to the W arilyn made only 30 2011 movie “My Weekend with Marilyn”. A Mfilms in her lifetime, young Colin Clark but her legendary status remembers the time he spent with Marilyn Monroe

and mysticism will remain in film history forever.

You and those closest to you whether it be your family or those that you consider to be family are your top priority this week. Home conditions are likely to improve due to the added effort and consistency you are now placing in this area of your life. Love and romance beckon towards the weekend and you are in for some fun time with a loved one, or expect to have many flirtatious opportunities if single. If something is broken then don’t try and fix it Taurus, sometimes we just have to accept that when things work they just work – there is no reason to question, analyse or fight it. Like attracts like, it is pretty simple in the end so why make it complicated? Things can and do come easy at times. Allow this natural flow to continue and you will begin to feel far more solid inside. At work expect to rise to the competition – you may have to go an extra mile this week. Limitations are the last thing you feel you need right now, you certainly have no wish to be in the hands of another. There is a potential on the horizon for an increase in wealth and abundance so pay attention to any opportunities coming your way. You may feel that it isn’t just about money anymore but you have a personal quest or ambition that you wish to weave into your earning capabilities. Change is in the air Gemini. Speak as direct as possible and do not be afraid to ask for what you want as others are going to have a hard time saying ‘no’ to your requests. Every week you are becoming stronger and more solid inside and this translates externally as someone who is naturally noticed. Everything you do will have amplified effects so double check your facts. Financially better times are ahead and as long as you are careful money will start to go a long way. The barriers are down and others will find you much more approachable than usual. Your focus is primarily upon building your future and even though this week is likely to bring you confusion and challenges within your close relationships, something will give you a clear conclusion by the end of the week. This is a time to take risks and chances and when you do things could just go your way. Be wary of temptations they are all around you now. All systems go now Virgo just remember that when you are cool, calm and collected and thinking things through you excel. Avoid the temptation to jump in where angels fear to tread and take your time. You may have to weigh something up to see what events or actions can bring you the most benefit right now, against those that are wasting your time. It is all about streamlining your life to maximise your time for the things you enjoy.

Carbon monoxide's damaging role unravelled

Chemotherapy 'undermines itself'

Carbon monoxide is produced by faulty boilers, cigarettes and car exhausts and it is deadly at high levels as it "shoulderbarges" oxygen out of the blood, meaning less is transported around the body. However, studies have indicated that even low levels, such as that found in built-up cities with lots of traffic, may also damage the heart. In the latest study, researchers at the University of Leeds found that levels common in heavy traffic could affect the way the heart resets itself after every beat because the gas kept sodium channels, which are important for controlling the heartbeat, open for longer. Disrupting the sodium channels can disrupt the heart's rhythm, leading to cardiac arrhythmia, which can be fatal. Together with

Fibroblasts are usually helpful cells

researchers in France they tested an angina drug – which also affects the sodium channels – on rats exposed to levels of carbon monoxide similar to heavy pollution, which had the same heart problems and found they could reverse them. A spokesman for the British Heart Foundation said: "This study is a good

example of research being used to better understand the underlying causes of an abnormal heart rhythm and in this case it has uncovered the ability of an old drug to perform a new trick. Carbon monoxide poisoning is tragically common but hopefully these promising results can be replicated in people so that it saves lives in the future."

Chemotherapy can undermine itself by causing a rogue response in healthy cells, which could explain why people become resistant, according to researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle. In their study, they looked at fibroblast cells, which normally play a critical role in wound healing and the production of collagen, the main component of connective

tissue such as tendons. But chemotherapy causes DNA damage that causes the fibroblasts to produce up to 30 times more of a protein called WNT16B than they should. The protein fuels cancer cells to grow and invade surrounding tissue – and to resist chemotherapy. It was already known that the protein was involved in the development of cancers – but not in treatment resistance. Around 90% of patients with solid cancers,

such as breast, prostate, lung and colon develop resistance to chemotherapy. Treatment is usually given at intervals, so that the body is not overwhelmed by its toxicity. But that allows time for tumour cells to recover and develop resistance. The researchers said they hoped their findings will help find a way to stop this response, and improve the effectiveness of therapy.

Their study pointed to numerous mutations within mitochondrial DNA that affect how long males live, and the speed at which they age. They said: "Intriguingly, these same mutations have no effects on patterns of ageing in females." They added: "If a mitochondrial

e gold medalist who has suffered with alopecia since she was 10 years old

An inspiration to all those with the problem … After her team had won the Olympic Gold medal, smashing three world records along the way, cyclist Joanna Rowsell took off her helmet and revealed a practically bald head. The 23-year-old medalist from Cheam, near Sutton in Surrey, has lived with the condition since her hair stared falling out when she was just ten years old and doctors diagnosed the hair loss problem of alopecia. Gail Porter, who regularly appears as a presenter on TV, suffers with the same condition and both these ladies are an inspiration to other sufferers – showing them that life does not stop just because you have no hair. And Joanna has said that, in fact, her hair loss has helped drive her towards her goals in life. She first lost an eyebrow, then within months began losing clumps of her auburn hair. Soon she began to lose eyelashes.

Despite the efforts of numerous doctors, she was told the condition was incurable. Recalling her childhood, she said: "I remember crying one night to my parents and asking what was happening." On Saturday, a fan of hers had contacted her via Twitter to tell her that it was National Alopecia Day, and what better day for her to have won her Gold medal. She said: "I thought wow, that's a bit spooky that our Olympic final is the same day. I hope I can be an inspiration to other girls with the condition and help raise awareness of it. When I was younger I used to focus really hard on my

school work. I wasn't really confident about going out and doing the usual teenage things. I didn't have much confidence in my appearance and I became very, very focused on my studies. But when cycling came along that was another thing for me to focus on and suddenly it didn't matter what I looked like, it was about how I performed on the bike and that's what I was judged on. That was great. When I started winning that was the best feeling ever. I wasn't going to stop; I wasn't going to let it hold me back. You only live once, so go for it." She said she had received messages of support from

the public which helped on her way to victory. "It was amazing because I never really had that response before from the public," she added. "I've never really seen myself as an inspiration or anything like that. It was a bit overwhelming at first and I was a bit shocked, because I don't want to be known as the girl with alopecia; I don't want that to be what defines me. But I've realised now that I've got a responsibility as such. It's always going to be a part of me, so I may as well embrace it and hopefully inspire other girls." Alopecia occurs when your own body’s immune system attacks the hair

follicles attacking all body hair. Some patients experience regrowth of the hair but often have repeat episodes while in other cases the hair never grows back. Except for when she is competing Joanna says she usually wears a wig. However, during

competitions that would become impossible, if not dangerous as the helmet she wears would not fit properly and could fall off if she fell from her bike. She has now become the poster girl for the condition and is an inspiration to all.

Spiritual advice column Tuck box triumph for with Crystal Clear Anne British Airways – our agony angel. The News is pleased to introduce our new columnist Crystal Clear Anne, the international psychic medium who practises in the UK, Ireland and Spain. Anne specialises in tarot card readings, palmistry, chakra cleansing, spiritualism, phone readings and spirit healing. She has been practising since she was “knee high to a grasshopper” and has been in Fuengirola for 12 years and will arrange readings and consultations all the way along the Costa and inland. Anne says: “Hello and welcome to my mystic world of tarot, palm reading, spirit healing, reiki, psychic mediumship and chakras. Over the next few weeks I will explain what they all mean and how they affect our everyday lives and much,

much more. For believers, the inquisitive and for sceptics alike, it is never too late to learn – all you need is an open mind and patience. Each column will be dedicated to one or more of the above arts and to your questions and queries which will all be appreciated and I will do my best to answer everyone who contacts me. By emailing info@thenewsonline.es (please state whether you are happy for your question to be printed in The News and, if not, I will reply separately). I look forward to writing for you in The News and getting your feedback. “I come from a long line of psychic practitioners, my great grandmother, grandmother Catherine, who are now in spirit and my mum, Mary, who knew what was coming before it happened and often

conversed with spirits. One of her sayings was: “A little of what you fancy does you good but overindulge in everything in life, and it will cause you harm” and “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”. Be grateful, be positive and be kind and remember that “what goes around comes around” and that, is what is known as karma. Enjoy life, never quit, never be discouraged or give up on anything because life is a roller coaster and you need to have faith in yourself whenever there are storms and your world comes crashing down. If you never lose your faith, an answer will be found, for life’s every trial and test you will find the strength if you simply do your best. Remember to count your blessings and not your sorrows.” Until next time. Anne.

Lisa Emeny CAN YOU DONATE 2 CUPS OF COFFEE PER WEEK? Doesn’t sound a lot does it? And it really isn’t. We know that times are hard for many people but a monthly donation of 10 euros – the equivalent of just two cups of coffee per week – would make a world of difference to the dogs and cats in our care that are waiting to be re-homed. Our resources are being stretched to the limit as the demand for our services increases. The animals need to be fed, vet bills need to be paid and wages need to be covered

Denise Walker Whilst I totally agree the British Day at La Trocha was less than mediocre – I was a bit disappointed to be classified as "a couple of others" when the article on page 13 last week, gave an list of who attended. CHAIN, the animal charity, was in attendance for ten hours and had probably the most attractive stall – festooned in red, blue and white and flying the Union Jack. Apart from tombola, the stall had posters of animals for adoption, handmade quilts for sale, books, pet goods and details of forthcoming trips, in fact the day was very lucrative for CHAIN and the stall was busy most of the day. The day wasn't helped by the rumour going round that the

CHAIN shop manager Day was cancelled. The moral of my letter is: name everyone who attended or none at all and let's face it the only people who can organize a British Day has to be BRITS.

Editor says: Sorry Denise, I didn’t mean to leave you out and, of course, the CHAIN stall was excellent. I too heard the rumour that the event wasn’t going ahead but sent someone over to check before we went to press on the Tuesday. We were given absolutely no press releases about what was going on at all – in fact getting anything out of them as to whether it was actually going to go ahead or not was about all we could do – and that was at the last minute! There should, of course, have been loads of releases from at least two weeks

before the event to encourage people to come but, as I’ve been saying for ages, if things aren’t advertised, how are people to know about them? What happens when you don’t advertise? Well, not a lot and that’s exactly what happened on the day. And what a waste of time and effort for the people who had organised it and set up stalls etc from 10am until 10pm which is the hours we were expected to be there, even though there was hardly anybody about. Getting any information about it was like pulling hens’ teeth so there wasn’t a whole lot any of us could do to help with any publicity for it but, as you say, let the Brits organise the next one –if there is one – and we’ll have cakes, teas, entertainment and everything else that us Brits are really good at!

eteors, falling stars or shooting stars are really tiny pieces of rock and dust usually no bigger than a grain of sand – that float around in space. Occasionally the Earth will sweep up some of this space debris as it orbits the Sun. As the tiny particles crash into the Earth’s upper atmosphere at tremendous speed, often as much as 132,000mph, they burn up causing a brief streak of light across the sky.

I

f the pieces of rock are bigger, say the size of a football, then they may survive their trip through the atmosphere and can fall to the ground as a meteorite. Hundreds of meteorites are found every year giving you some idea of the number of times that space debris hits the Earth.

C

By email Dear Amy Thomas, whilst understanding, again, that you write your own opinions, in your own column .... entitled movies, I fail to understand your intentional provocation and flippancy on subjects you either have no interest in and a general basic lack of respect for things just not to your taste. If you wish to continue commenting, either stick to movies or change the name of your column to something more suited to whatever it is you are attempting to achieve. I would like to appologise on behalf of a billion people world wide if your enjoyment of television and adverts has been intruded upon for two weeks by quite a few inspirational, real, hardworking individuals and teams who represent their

M –

countries, families and friends in a positive and socially constructive way. Please decide what you want this column to be as your newpaper is usually beyond reproach.

Amy Thomas says: I would have appreciated this letter more if Ms Howell had read the column rather than just the first paragraph introducing the film, Chariots Of Fire, that the column was all about. The column was not about the present excellent Olympics and only mentioned them by way of introducing the film. I was simply saying that I, personally, do not wish to sit in front of my television for hours and hours of coverage of them, then explained my views on the FILM.

omets, on the other hand, are more like dirty snowballs, several miles in diameter. There are probably millions of comets orbiting in an area of space known as the Kuiper belt, way out past the orbit of Pluto on the edge of the Solar System. Occasionally something will disturb the comet, usually by bumping into another comet, and then the comet will be drawn in toward the Sun. As it gets closer to the Sun it begins to vaporise and shed some of its mass. It is now that the comet’s tail begins to appear. The tail is made from billions of tiny pieces of rock and ice and can stretch for many millions of miles into space away from the comet.

them. One particular comet is called SwiftTuttle after the two men who discovered it in 1862. Swift-Tuttle is in a very elliptical orbit that takes it right out into deep space before it returns every 133 years. The last time it appeared in the sky was in 1992 and its next return will be in 2126. The thing about Swift-Tuttle though is that each time it has returned the debris from its huge tail is left hanging in space directly across the Earth’s orbit and this weekend we are going to crash right through it all!

W

e are in no danger, most of the debris is no bigger than a grain of sand, but what it will do is produce a meteor shower with possibly a hundred meteors an hour streaking across the night sky. This happens every year around mid August and if we happen to strike a rich part of the debris field we could even get to see a meteor storm ,as happened in 1972 when thousands of meteors were seen during the storm.

T

ome comets crash into the Sun and are destroyed. Some are thrown back out into deep space and are never seen again, while a few are swung into a very elongated orbit around the Sun that can bring them back to the inner solar system, these comets are known as periodic comets.

o see this celestial firework display simply lie back on a deck chair or sun lounger, give your eyes about 15 minutes to become dark adapted and be patient, patience is the key word with meteors. Look approximately half way up the sky toward the northeast and you will see them. The night of Sunday 12th August is when the peak is predicted to occur. Try to find an area as dark as possible away from street lights, the darker the sky the more meteors you are likely to see. After midnight is the best time because your part of the Earth will then be facing directly into the stream. You may see meteors in any part of the sky but if you follow an imaginary line backwards then they all seem to radiate from the constellation of Perseus, hence the name The Perseids.

S

D

S

ome periodic comets return after many years, Halley’s Comet for instance returns every 76 years, and there are some comets that return after just a few years. Comets are usually named after the person or persons who first discovered

on’t forget to make a wish when you see one as they always come true!

Enjoy your Stargazing!

Auto braking: a quantum leap for road safety New crash-test regulations mean that autonomous emergency braking technology will soon be fitted to all cars. Accidents could soon be a thing of the past, for those driving new cars at least, thanks to Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). It’s a system that uses radar, lidar (laser) or video technology to warn the driver of an impending frontal collision before priming the brakes and eventually performing an emergency stop. The system can even detect pedestrians and apply the brakes if an impact is imminent.

Citroën C1 Connexion Citroën C1 Connexion special edition, crowdsourced on Facebook®, on sale now, priced from £9,495

Ford has devised a new twist on taking the plane to Germany, after loaning two S-MAX for Britain’s Dave Wiltshire and Steve Roberts to carry their aircraft to the World Model Jet Flying Championships. The precious, hand-crafted scale models measure up to two metres in length, weigh 15 kilos and are worth in excess

of £10,000, with each taking many painstaking hours to build. Ford stepped in, to support the team with two SMAX after reading about their success in other events. The fold flat rear seating offered a safe and secure hangar during the long journey. Dave and Steve are well known to most on the UK model jet scene. Dave is often to be found at jet events in the UK, flying one of his own fleet –he currently has 15 jets, all self-built. He said: “It’s a tremendous help to have

such a versatile and spacious vehicle. It makes our job of getting to the championships so much easier – not to mention more enjoyable. We hope to do it justice by bringing home the cup!” Steve Humbles, Ford of Britain Product Marketing Manager said; S-MAX was designed and developed to offer customers a first-class travel experience for which it’s won many accolades for practicality, style and security, never did we expect it to protect and carry aircraft!”

DVLA changes in Eyesight regs DVLA changes to the eyesight requirements for drivers have missed a chance to improve road safety, according to Specsavers Corporate Eyecare. Despite the opportunity to introduce tougher vision standards, a DVLA consultation has concluded that the current number plate test, which dates from the 1930s, is to remain in place with no change to the distance from which the letters and figures must be read to test visual acuity. With a minor alteration to the existing standards, the DVLA now simply states that drivers applying for their licence must declare that they have ‘never been told that their vision is below that of the EU minimum measurement’. There will be no routine eyesight check and no requirement for a professional opinion when applying for a licence. Jim Lythgow, director of strategic alliances at

Specsavers Corporate Eyecare, explains: ‘If a driver happens to visit an optician of their own volition and it is found that their eyesight does not meet the EU standard, they must notify the DVLA.’ Jim Lythgow continues: ‘Relying on the individual to decide for

themselves whether to visit the opticians is wholly inadequate. Eyesight often deteriorates slowly over time and subtle changes can go unnoticed. This also relies, of course, on the individual being inclined to go for an eye test and to then notify the DVLA of any problems.’

Malaga CF In Crisis Lord’s test may be After several weeks of speculation and hearsay is Pietersen’s last there a light at the end of the tunnel? The problems started several weeks ago even before pre-season training. Malaga still owed money to Osasuna and Villareal for transfers and the money did not seem to be forthcoming. The manager Manuel Pelligrini had been promised in excess of €50 million for new players for the European and League campaign – this too did not appear. Had the Sheik run out of money or had he had enough of the Spanish bureaucracy getting in the way of the building of the new training ground. Rumours are rife that Al Thani is completely frustrated with the Ayuntamiento de Malaga, La Junta de Andalucia and the Ayuntamiento de Marbella (in that order), over the new training ground and stadium and redevelopment of the old Marbella Port. Also on Facebook he professed his frustration with the TV rights money, with the majority going to the big two, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Speculation is that the Junta de Andalucia are keen to see a Sevilla-based team being the top team in Andalucia rather than the Costa Del Sol, and Malaga. The Madrid press also seem to be against Malaga and are keen to press their claims for Athletico Madrid to have the 4th Champions League spot as Malaga have not fulfilled their financial obligations. This seems unlikely now as the first three fixtures are set in place. Four players had put denuncia's against the club for unpaid wages as the club's money had dried up. One of these is Santi Cazorla who at the time of writing

Santi Cazorla and Salomon Rondon

seems set to sign for Arsenal for a fee of around €23million. Now, in an official statement on Thursday 2nd August, the Sheik states that money he has sent over has been stolen. Allegedly three people – including Sports Director Antonio Fernandez – are implicated in this. It seems Cazorla will be sold to offset the debts and wages, and another restructuring of the club will take place. Further speculation is that Pelligrini, who is currently earning around €7million a year, will leave the club and there is the possibility that former Malaga manager Antonio Tapia will take over. After all these problems at least the team went to Italy to face the formidable Juventus team. Salomon Rondon (Malaga's leading goalscorer for the last two years) did not travel and it has been confirmed that he has signed for Russian club Ruben Kazan for €10

million. With him and Cazorla gone it leaves Malaga's strike force extremely depleted. There is also a rumour that Man Utd are showing interest in Spanish under 23 midfielder Isco. The friendly ended 2 nil to Juventus with the Malaga team giving a good account of themselves. Manuel Pellegrini meanwhile was in talks in Italy with Al Thani's advisors to negotiate his salary. As I see it, the sale of one or two players is needed to safeguard the future of the club in the short term. Once the three Malaga officials who have allegedly been taking the Sheik's money have been removed from the club, more money will be invested. This may be a smokescreen, who knows. All I can say is that for all the thousands of Malaga supporters the start of the season is starting so disappointingly, but for the young players it is time to step up to the mark and seize their first team opportunity. The season begins for Malaga away at Celta Vigo on Saturday 18th August at 7pm. The first game at La Roselada is against Mallorca on Saturday 25th August kicking off at 11pm!! By Scott Forbes

South Africa preserved their 1-0 series lead as the second Test with England finished in a draw after a captivating final day at Headingley. The tourists resumed on 39-0, only 33 runs ahead, and skipper Graeme Smith extended his partnership with Jacques Rudolph to 120. Kevin Pietersen removed Rudolph with his second delivery of parttime off-spin and took a Test-best 3-52, while Stuart Broad (5-69) struck with successive deliveries in a spell of 4-12 from 20 balls before South Africa declared on 258-9. It left England needing 253 in 39 overs and they sent Pietersen in to open, but closed 123 short of victory at 130-4 when a draw was agreed at 19:30 BST with six overs remaining. Africa might be his last. "I can't give any assurances, no. I love playing Test cricket for England. But there are obstacles in the way," he said. By the time he reached the post-match press conference an unsmiling Pietersen was determined to be more discreet. But he is not good at that. "Maybe it [the Lord's Test] will be my last," he said. "We will talk after the next Test. Anything is possible."

match following his firstinnings 149, hit three fours in the opening over and a burgeoning crowd sensed something momentous, but he spooned a catch to mid-on from the opening ball of the third over. Alastair Cook hit a huge six in his 46, and even when he departed in the 18th over with 163 still needed, England sent out Matt Prior at number five. His run-out for seven spelt the end of their attacking aspirations and South Africa now go into the final Test at Lord's on 20th August needing merely to avoid defeat to win the series and depose England at the top of the Test. Brownlee brothers blitz Triathlon Alistair Brownlee won Britain’s 19th gold medal after winning the Olympic Triathlon. His brother Jonathan was third behind Spain’s Javier Gomez. The three of them had been instrumental in forming the winning breakway during the run leg, where Alistair slowly ramped up the speed to go on and take the gold. On the run in he picked up a union jack flag from a spectator, before slowing down to walk across the line.

Electrifying Games What a weekend of sport was dished up by Team GB, Super Saturday will forever be remembered as one of the greatest nights for British athletics. Sunday wasn’t bad either with the magical Usain Bolt answering all his doubters in the best possible way...Gold Jessica Ennis won the Olympic heptathlon gold medal on Saturday, the first for Britain on the track at the London Games. Ennis started with a record in the hurdles and finished it off almost 36 hours later with an 800metre run that was more like two victory laps of the packed, 80,000seat Olympic Stadium. While Ennis was winning hers, Greg Rutherford was jumping his way to long jump gold, the 25year-old leapt 8.31 metres, enough for a clear victory over his closest rivals in the competition. Rutherford’s winning jump came in the fourth

of his six jumps. He then faced an anxious wait to see whether any of his rivals could better his effort, but none could. He became the first British man in almost half a century to win Olympic gold in the long jump. The last being Lynn Davies in 1964. Back on the track and it was the turn of Mo Farah in the 10,000 metres, and what a race that proved to be, Farah now seems to have his tactics worked

out and backs them up with an amazing turn of speed. Gone now is the worry that he has gone too soon only to be swamped in the run to the tape by the Kenyans and Ethiopians. Farah has been training at altitude with the Kenyans, commuted across the Atlantic to work with Alberto Salazar at the hitech Nike facility in Oregon and availed himself of the best brains in sports science at home. Mo Farah is also competing in the 5,000 metres later this week, what a double that would be. Earlier on Super Saturday over at the velodrome, GB womens

so many tenths of seconds. And one journalist even raised questions about Jessica Ennis. Thierry Vautrat, a journalist with Ouest France, tweeted after her win in the heptathlon: "Ennis? She's a bit unreal. Wonder how she could win the (final event) 800m so easily, with no pain. Surprising." As you can tell the French haven’t been winning much recently. But to raise issues like this is something the French like to do on a regular basis. Sour grapes gone too far. Britain's Beth Tweddle said after winning the Olympic bronze to add to

team pursuiters, Dani King, Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell, won the gold medal race with another world record. The girls broke the record in all six of their rides on their way to gold. The mens pursuit team also won gold with a world record. Jason Kenny's resounding victory over the pre-competition favourite, Frenchman Gregory Bauge, makes him Great Britain's first double Olympic gold medallist at the 2012 London Olympics, he had already won the team sprint gold on Thursday alongside Sir Chris Hoy and young Philip Hindes. And at just 24, he now has three Olympic golds and a silver to his name. Britain’s success in the velodrome has got the French questioning how they have managed to gain

her three world titles, six European crowns, and 2002 Commonwealth Games success, what a fine way to end her career! "It was the one that was missing from my collection," says the 27year-old, who finished fourth in the Olympic uneven bars final in Beijing. "I wasn't bothered about what colour it was. I saw myself in third and I thought: 'Please don't be fourth again.' I just can't put into words what it means to me." The British showjumping team of ‘Golden Oldies’ Nick Skelton 54 and Peter Charles 52, along with younger team members Ben Maher and Scott Brash won Britain’s first jumping gold medal in 60 years, after a jump-off against the Dutch team at a packed and roaring Greenwich Park. In the build-up to the

Sydney Olympics in 2000, Skelton fell off his horse and broke his neck in two places. With the upper half of his spine immobilised for five months, he was told by surgeons that another fall could prove fatal and was forced to retire from the sport. But after consultation with a German specialist, the bones eventually healed and he returned to competition in 2002. Charles, who competed for Ireland in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, suffered a horrendous fall during a show in Hampshire in 2006, rupturing his spinal sheath, shattering three ribs and breaking a vertebrae. Lucky they were both there then really!! It wasn’t all success for team GB though as two favourites for medals Dai Green in the hurdles and Perry Shakes Drayton in the womens 400m hurdles both failed in their quest for Olympic glory. There was a glimmer of hope for Shakes Drayton as Czech athlete Denisa Rosolova was disqualified for running out of her lane, but after an appeal she was then re-instated. Holly Bleasdale was distraught after her pole vault failure, but her mood was tempered when her boyfriend proposed to her after the event. Phillips Idowu was also one to miss out after the stay away triple jumper failed to qualify for the final. (see page 31) By Mike Kerrigan

Malaga’s Cazorla completes move to Arsenal Arsenal have completed the signing of Spain international attacking midfielder Santi Cazorla from Malaga. Cazorla, who was part of Spain's Euro 2012-winning squad earlier this summer, has moved to the Emirates Stadium after signing what Arsenal have called "a long-term contract". The fee has not been disclosed, but it is believed to be in the region of £17 million. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told the club's official website: "Santi Cazorla is a great signing for us. He is a player with good experience at both club and international level, who will add significant quality to our squad.

Seven Camaroon athletes disappear from Olympic Village The seven – five boxers, a swimmer and a soccer player – are suspected of having left to stay in Europe for economic reasons. "What began as rumour has finally turned out to be true. Seven Cameroonian athletes who participated at the 2012 London Olympic Games have disappeared from the Olympic Village," David Ojong, the mission head said in a message sent to the ministry. It is not the first time Cameroonian athletes have disappeared during international sports competitions.

Bolt still fancies a trial for Man Utd Usain Bolt won his second consecutive gold medal in the Olympic 100m final on Sunday, but he's already back to talking about his desire to pursue a new challenge in a different sport. He's said it before and now he's saying it again: he wants to play for Manchester United. The Sun quotes Bolt as saying: "People think I am joking. But if Alex Ferguson called me up and said, 'OK let's do this, come and have a trial', it would be impossible for me to say no. I can play a bit.”
