NATIONAL NEWS - DEVASTATION ON THE MAINLAND AND IN THE CANARIES
1000s evacuated and two die as wildfires rage The worst summer for wildfires for the last decade continued over the weekend in several parts of the country. In the Canaries, around 1,000 people were evacuated overnight on Sunday from the Vallehermoso area of La Gomera, to join another 3,000 people who had already been forced to flee

WORLD 1000s evacuated and two die as It’s over wildfires rage By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
Well, actually not quite yet. The main Olympics are over but now we have the much more interesting Paralympics coming up. I would normally assume that everyone would know what these are all about but I met someone the other day who had never heard of them so, just in case you haven’t got a clue, these are the equivalent of the Olympic Games with the difference that all the athletes are disabled in some way. Some have lost, or have lost the use of limbs, some are blind but all are in some way disabled and the courage it takes for these men and women to compete is immeasurable. Quite a few of them have voiced the opinion that taking part has given them a new lease of life. It must be very easy to get into a “poor me” syndrome – God knows it’s easy enough when you’re not disabled sometimes – but all power to the men and women taking part no matter which country they represent, even though I do secretly hope that team GB will come out on top! On an entirely different note, at the office here in Coin we are waiting for someone to come and put an openable window at the front that, at the moment is four huge sheets of plate glass. Hot or what?! We can’t wait for our new window and some air! It’s birthday party time at Buzby’s, Benalmadena, on Saturday – always a good night so have a look at “Out & About” and book your tickets quick!
The two deaths brought the number of firefighters killed this summer to three. In July, a helicopter pilot died fighting the blazes that devastated 50,000 hectares in Valencia province. The Torremanzanas blaze has been largely brought under control but the alert level in northern Alicante and Valencia remained high on Tuesday. Canary Islands regional premier Paulino Rivero told reporters the situation was “very serious” and the chances of controlling La Gomera’s blaze were low because of high temperatures, low humidity, the wind direction and the
Freak firework blast injures 28 At least 28 people were injured in Elche in eastern Spain on Sunday night when a rogue firework accidentally set off thousands of others stored in a church bell tower, showering hundreds of people gathered below for a festival with sparks and burning material. A council spokesman said three firework operators were hospitalised for serious burns. The other 25 people only had minor injuries. The crowd jeered Elche mayor Mercedes Alonso as she left the event.
type of terrain where the fires bare raging. Rivero said about a quarter of the island’s population had been evacuated for their own safety over the weekend. The blaze has consumed some 750 hectares of the Garajonay National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site, some of which is believed to have been in existence for millions of years. Officials have already said it will take at least three decades for the burned areas of the reserve to recover. In Galicia, villages have been evacuated in Ourense province but officials said the forest fires have now been
contained. They said the rain forecast for Wednesday should eliminate the risk of the fires reviving. On Tuesday, Interior minister Jorge Fernández Díaz argued in favour of stiffer sentences for people who accidentally or deliberately cause fires. He said an unacceptable number of fires were set by pyromaniacs. His proposal has been backed by officials at both the regional and national level. Meanwhile Environment minister Miguel Arias Cañete came under fire for his lack of visibility. The Socialist Party’s secretary of territorial organisation and
sustainability, Hugo Morán, denounced the minister’s attendance at a bullfight on Sunday “while Spain burns.” The minister had not been seen in public since August 2nd. Cañete replied that he was merely doing his ministerial duty: “I was
essentially the on-call minister, the Cabinet Office sent me to accompany His Majesty the King. It’s one of the jobs of a minister, to accompany the king on official acts. The on-call minister doesn’t decide what to attend and what not to.”
‘Orwellian nightmare’ Opposition politicians have called the Catalan regional government’s offer to grant anonymity to people who report “uncivil” behaviour by their fellow citizens as an “Orwellian nightmare”. This behaviour includes irritating street musicians and beggars, putting one’s feet up on train seats, throwing cigarette ends out of windows. Parents who believe that other parents have lied about their addresses in order to get their children into a better school have been asked to report such suspicions to the police. A

The Daily Telegraph reported on Monday that Queen Sofia, Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia were not allowed to enter the "mixed zone" at the Excel venue following the Taekwondo final on Friday night where they had hoped to congratulate Nico Garcia, who won a Silver medal. An Olympic volunteer turned them away because they were not carrying the correct accreditation.

According to the report, the unnamed volunteer was overheard telling Prince Felipe: "Who is the future King of Spain? Well I did not know, but you aren't carrying the accreditation needed for this zone so you are not going in.” The Royal party hung around for several minutes before approaching a female volunteer, who rejected them on the same grounds, despite pleas from Royal security staff.

Rajoy ends holiday to meet King After his meeting with King Juan Carlos at the summer palace in Marivent, Mallorca, on Tuesday, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced that the government will extend the €400 subsidy for another six months to unemployed people who have run out of dole credits. The subsidy, which benefits some 200,000 people, was due to end on August 15th. The extension will be approved at the next Cabinet meeting on August 24th. It will be retroactive so the newly unemployed who have a right to it will receive it.
was introduced by the Zapatero government in February last year, with an initial duration of six months. This is its third extension. Rajoy also insisted at the press conference after his meeting with the King that
he will not decide whether to ask for a second bail-out until he knows what the European Central Bank intends to do about the eurozone crisis. He said he had not discussed the matter with the King because “nothing has changed since my
last statement on August 3rd”. The King traditionally meets the prime minister every summer in Mallorca and this was Rajoy’s first such meeting since he was elected in November last year.

Sinaloa drug cartel Man arrested for suspects arrested policewoman’s Four suspected members of Mexico's feared drug cartel murder were arrested in the centre of Madrid last week, while allegedly trying to set up a European operation.
Jesús Gutiérrez Guzmán and Samuel Zazueta Valenzuela
Jesus Gutierrez Guzman, a cousin of Sinaloa's fugitive leader Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, Rafael Humberto Celaya Valenzuela, Samuel Zazueta Valenzuela and Jesus Gonzalo Palazuelos Soto are all wanted in the United States of America over allegations of drugtrafficking and money-laundering.
department has offered a reward of up to $5m for information leading to his arrest. The Sinaloa cartel is often described as the most powerful drug trafficking organisation in the western hemisphere. It controls much of the flow of cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines into the US via air, land and sea, and is believed to have links in as many as 50 countries. Analysts say it was only a matter of time before the cartel tried to expand into Europe and Spain was the natural choice as an entry point, given the common language and its sea ports.
The arrests came after a secret investigation undertaken by Spain’s National Police force and the FBI. Shorty Guzman was jailed in 1993 but escaped his maximumsecurity prison in a laundry basket eight years later, embarrassing and eluding the authorities ever since. The US state
At the end of July, some 373kg of cocaine was discovered in a container which arrived in Algeciras. Police explain that the group was bringing in the cocaine in small quantities so as not to lose large amounts if it was confiscated. The men usually stayed in expensive hotels and held meetings like regular businessmen at Madrid’s luxury Palace Hotel. Police said that the men did not put up any resistance when they were detained. The US government is expected to ask in the coming days for the extradition of the four men.
Police in Madrid arrested David Manuel Fernández Rodríguez on Sunday in connection with a shootout last week in which a 62-year-old policewoman was killed. Fernández Rodríguez, 42, was born in Nancy, France but is a Spanish citizen. Carmen Muñoz García was in a patrol car with her partner last Wednesday when they tried to intercept a vehicle whose occupants were suspected of having robbed a post office minutes earlier. According to witnesses,
In support of a demand for the freedom of Josu Uribetxeberria Bolinaga, who is terminally ill with cancer, 225 ETA prisoners officially declared themselves on hunger strike on Tuesday, after another 29 had withdrawn from the action. Scientists are beginning to investigate how a stand of cypress trees survived a fire in Valencia province in July which devastated some 20,000 hectares around them. The trees, occupying a space of 9,000 square metres, were planted 22 years ago. Photos taken after the fire show the swathe of greenery in a bare, almost lunar landscape. Now the authorities want to know if the their survival was a fluke or if they really can withstand fire. If so, they could be

the two robbers attempted a getaway from the post office in a Citroën Berlingo but encountered a patrol car after 500 metres, manoeuvred to block their way. already signed statements that they intended to go on strike for just 24 hours while others had joined an “exercise yard strike”, giving up their right to go out into the yard. The officials also said food had been found hidden away in a number of the striking prisoners’ cells. The Interior Ministry is waiting for the results of tests being carried out on Uribetxeberria Bolinaga
before deciding whether to send him home. Uribetxeberria Bolinaga was involved in the kidnapping of prison officer Jose Antonio Ortega Larato on January 17th, 1996 in Burgos on his way home from work at Logroño jail. He was kept in a hole underground until he was freed 532 days later by the Guardia Civil on July 1st 1997.
Spaniards enjoy longest holidays Spaniards are among the people who enjoy the most days off work per year – 22 paid working days as decreed by the law plus 14 days for religious or traditional reasons which are not deducted from their salaries. In the UK, where people enjoy 28 days paid holiday a year, the eight Bank holidays can be included within that time if employers so wish. The same applies to Greece, Austria, France Sweden, Luxembourg, Finland and Denmark, where the official annual holiday is 25 days.
Canadian and Chinese labour laws only concede 19 and 21 days of paid holidays respectively while in the US employers are not obliged to pay for days not worked. As a result, Americans usually take only two weeks holiday a year.

Number of prisoners drops again Figures released by the interior ministry’s department of Corrections show that the number of inmates in Spanish jails dropped for the second year running, from 76,079 in 2009 to 70,472 last year. Of these, 65,184 are men and 5,288 women. There had also been a slight drop – just under one per cent – in the number of foreigners, who account for just under a third of the total number of inmates in the country’s prisons. andalucia is the region with most prisoners – 16,174 – followed by Catalonia (10,497), madrid (9,503) and Valencia (7.397).

Equality minister ana mato said on monday that the Olympic Games had put women where they belonged – way out in front. Of the 17 medals won by Spain, 11 were won by women. She said they were examples of “determination, effort and commitment” and the good results they obtained “highlight the changes that women are experiencing in our society as they occupy the places corresponding to them in areas such as sport”. Sra mato said her ministry is preparing a ceremony to honour the sportswomen in the near future.

Australian MPs are to debate proposals made in a report released on Monday by an independent panel appointed by Prime Minister Julia Gillard that two offshore facilities should be reopened ''as soon as possible'' as part of a raft of measures aimed at reducing the number of people travelling to Australia by boat. Ms Gillard said she hoped to see asylumseekers processed offshore "within a month", saying she had already spoken to leaders in Papua New Guinea and Nauru. When the Labour government
under Kevin Rudd came to power in 2007, it ended the Pacific Solution, introduced in 2001 by the government of John Howard, in response to a reported rise in the number of asylum seekers arriving by boat. Processing centres were set up on Nauru and on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea, the governments of the two nations receiving millions of dollars in aid in exchange. Meanwhile, Australian customs officials are investigating reports that a

the people on board. Some 600 asylum seekers are believed to have died making the dangerous journey by boat to Australia since late 2009.
Pirate negotiator given 12 life sentences A Somali man who acted as a hostage negotiator during the hijacking of an American yacht has been given 12 life sentences by a US judge. Mohammad Saaili Shibin had been found guilty in April of piracy, kidnapping and hostage-taking over the 2011 hijacking of the SV Quest, near Oman. Jean and Scott Adam of Marina del Rey, California, the couple who owned the boat, as well as friends Bob Riggle and Phyllis Macay, of
Seattle, were shot dead after a gang of 19 pirates took them hostage in the Indian Ocean. They were the first Americans to die in a spate of piracy attacks in the Gulf of Aden. Prosecutors said he received at least $30,000 (£18,475) for negotiating ransom payments. The
court heard how Shibin had researched the background of the hostages over the internet to determine how much ransom to demand and to find family members to contact for the payments. Shibin was arrested by the FBI and military officials in Somalia in April
A vast "raft" of volcanic rocks covering 10,000 sq miles of ocean has been spotted by a new Zealand military aircraft. A naval ship was forced to change course in order to avoid the cluster of buoyant rocks, located 1,000 miles off the new Zealand coast. Researchers aboard the ship, HMnZS Canterbury, suggested that the source of the pumice was an underwater volcano (seamount) known as Monowai, located to the north of new Zealand. the pumice is likely to have been formed when lava from the seamount came into contact with seawater, and as it is less dense than water it quickly rises to the surface of the ocean. Border guards smuggled people two former officers of the US Border Patrol have been found guilty of smuggling hundreds of illegal immigrants across the border from Mexico for personal gain. Brothers Raul and Fidel Villarreal were also convicted of accepting bribes and conspiring to launder money. An investigation into the men was launched in 2005 following a tip-off. in 2006, the two men were themselves tipped off about the probe and fled to Mexico, where they settled in tijuana. they were arrested and extradited to face trial in the US in 2008. they face a maximum of 50 years in prison and fines of $1.25m.

Breivik 'could have been stopped sooner' Norway's police could have prevented the bombing of central Oslo and caught mass killer Anders Behring Breivik faster, according to an official report released on Monday. The independent inquiry said his subsequent shooting spree on Utoeya Island could have been halted earlier, but police took an "unacceptable" amount of time to get to the island. The inquiry came up with 31 recommendations but most damning were its findings that the attack on the government complex in Oslo could have been prevented by effective implementation of security measures that had already been approved. Among the most damaging of the 482page report's conclusions is that a two-man local police team reached the lake shore at Utvika first, but chose to wait for bettertrained colleagues rather than find a boat and cross to Utoeya themselves. The inquiry team also questioned why the street
outside the prime minister's office was not closed to traffic as recommended seven years before. The report also gives details of a phone-call made by a pedestrian 10 minutes after the Oslo bomb went off, giving police a good description of a man carrying a pistol and wearing protective clothing. The operator passed the message on but the tip-off was not followed up for some two hours, the report said. Although it was clear that a terrorist attack had been carried out, the inquiry says no immediate nationwide alert was given, no roadblocks or observation posts were set up, no attempt was made to mobilise helicopters nor did the operation centre take up offers from neighbouring police districts.
The report concluded that the operation centre was "simply overloaded" to the extent that staff did little to prevent further attacks during "the acute phase". Breivik has admitted killing 77 people and wounding more than 240 others, claiming he was trying to stop Muslims from taking over Norway. The panel of five trial judges will have to rule on Breivik's sanity when they deliver their verdict on August 24th. Their conclusion will determine whether he is given a long prison sentence or is sent to a secure psychiatric ward.

It’s all over bar the shouting but what does it all mean to Britain now? Team GB gained 29 gold medals, 17 silver medals and 19 bronze medals by the time the Games closed on Sunday night. Quite spectacular when you consider that 60 years ago saw Britain winning just one medal for the whole of that year’s games. But what are some of the stats for these games? Well, 2.9 million bell ringers took part at the beginning to announce the opening of the games led by Big Ben, of course, but there were church bells, campanologists with hand bells and even Morris Dancers with their bells on their legs and sticks. 15,000 volunteers took part in the opening ceremony designed by Danny Boyle that cost 27 million pounds. 70,000 volunteers took part during the games plus 18,000 troops drafted in at the last minute to make up the security bungled by G4S. 10,490 competitors took

part in 302 medal events with seven Cameroon athletes going AWOL during the first week – none of which have been seen since but, due to the fact that they have visas until the end of the month, strictly speaking they have done nothing illegal – although perhaps the country they were representing won’t see it quite like that! Two female Saudi athletes took part in the Games for the first time, previously their teams were all male. Over 2,000,000 ticket holders visited 27 venues across Great Britain. In Atlanta in 1996, Great Britain’s only medalists were rowers Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent and Pinsent said in an interview on Sunday that there is one big difference between then and now – “money, plain and simply, money.” These days sports are receiving money from the National Lottery and the government. Money had been pledged to get Team GB up and running (or cycling, swimming and all the rest of it) after the last round of Games and what a difference it has made David Cameron has said that the Government has pledged to keep the money flowing until 2016 and beyond and that 800,000 people are expected to be using the Olympic Park every year even though the complex doesn’t have a permanent tenant at the moment. However, lots of interest in taking over parts of the complex has been shown especially by football clubs vying for the tenancy, and the Olympic Village will have people clamouring to live there. When David Cameron was interrupted repeatedly by a rather supercilious and arrogant BBC presenter, Mishal Husain, saying that the country is in a terrible mess and what did he intend to do about sports generally now, he explained that schools will be required to have competitive games during the school week in primary schools meaning that
children will learn how to work as a team and how to cope with not only getting what they want when they win but also how to cope with the downside of life if their teams lose. Up until now, schools only had to supply two hours a week of physical activity, some of which took this to mean that a dance class qualified and, although dance is great exercise in some ways, it’s not sport. Ms. Husain brought up the fact that 21 school playing fields had been lost in the last year according to statistics, but the PM explained that 14 of these were because the schools had actually closed down and four because of schools’ amalgamation which left the grand total of three actually being sold when the schools were still operating. He went on to say that the Games have brought the country together with foreign heads of states telling Mr. Cameron that “these had been the best games they had ever attended. It has been a great confidence boost for the whole of the country, showing what makes Great Britain great.”
Tom Daley Young British bronze medal winning 10 metre platform diver Tom Daley was congratulated by David Beckham upon his win with people jumping to their feet when he hit the water perfectly. His first dive was a disaster as, despite being told to turn their flashes on cameras off repeatedly, the way he turned meant that the flashes were straight in his face as he started his dive. Daley spoke to the referee who made another announcement that flashes were forbidden and Daley was allowed to dive again. He said that his best dive was his most complicated – a forward four and a half somersault. He added that the pressure to do well was
immense but, at the end of the day he realised that he could only do his best and “went out there, gave it my all and could do no more. It was a good dive.” He added that his dad had fought his cancer all the way in the hope that he would be able to watch his son dive at the Olympic Games in the UK, but it was not to be. However, the rest of his family, along with David Beckham were there and he felt his dad was there in spirit with him. He looked more nervous about getting his Spanish A Level result tomorrow (Thursday)!
What now? The Olympic Park will be re-opened in phases after the finish of the games. The site covers some 560 acres – equivalent to 357 football pitches. The water polo venue and hockey arena will be dismantled. The basketball arena will have 870 new homes built on it, and the local community will be able to use the aquatic centre. The velodrome will be used as a world class structure for cycling competitions for the rest of the world to use. The 7km track around it will remain, as will the BMX park. The press and broadcast centre will become prestige offices for many businesses and the Arcelow Mittal orbit, the thing that looks like a giant helter skelter will be re-opened as an observation point for visitors. Ex-Prime minister Tony Blair said that these Games could mean that locally and nationally, sports should be able to take their rightful place in the nation’s heart. The psychology of the Games should leave the nation inspired to do bigger and better things. Jaques Rogge said now is the time for Britain to rise to the occasion and fund our sportsmen and women and up-and-coming sports people of the future from now on.
The Closing Ceremony Winners of the men’s marathon entered the arena to collect their medals, the last of this year’s Games. They were Gold: Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda; Silver, Abdel Kirui of Kenya and Bronze, Wilson Kipsang Kiproteck of Kenya. The closing ceremony came up to expectations with a concert enjoyed by athletes, volunteers, security personnel, 80,000 spectators in the stadium and millions watching it on TV across the globe. Elbow sang “One Day Like This A Year Will See Me Right” which no doubt reflected the feelings of a lot of the medal winners, then there was Blur’s “Park Life” for the Olympic Park played by the Household Cavalry band, 16 Dohl Indian drums kept the beat to Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” while 303 white boxes representing each of the events were brought into the stadium and major times throughout the Games were played onto diamond vision screens. John Lennon’s Imagine started with a group of children singing and signing for the deaf followed by an exclusively digitally re-mastered version for the Games of the song done by Yoko Ono with John Lennon appearing on the big screens. Next on was George Michael in black leather gear, silver skull belt buckle and crucifix, black T-shirt and shades with “Freedom”. Clearly George had put on a bit of weight around his face but, hey, we’re all getting older and he can still belt them out, and in tune unlike some. He followed up with his “I’m Alive” after telling everyone that Britain was “the centre of the universe” to rousing cheers and applause by the people in the stadium.
The Kaiser Chief’s sang the Who’s Pinball Wizzard complete with Vespa scooters wizzing around the stadium (did you spot the one with Union Flag livery and white wall tyres?!), a Bowie Medley from Ziggy Stardust to the Great White Duke eras with top models emerging from behind their photos emblazoned on to articulated lorries in a glittering array of dresses. The Who did turn up eventually at the end but, what a shame they couldn’t have done Pinball themselves. The Olympic flag was handed over by Boris Johnson to the representative for the next games in Rio. But Boris was a bit reluctant to hand the flag over, pulling it back just that little bit before M. Rogge could quite grab it. Naughty Boris!
Odd stats In total 240,000 Brits applied to be volunteers for the games, with 70,000 getting the jobs. Overall, team GB finished third after the United States who came first with 46 golds and 110 medals and China – who the USA just lost out to at the last Games – coming second. Cyprus, Guatamala and Grenada are three nations that won Olympic medals for the first time this year. David Cameron said he could sum up the games in just two words: “Britain delivered”.
The best? Was the closing ceremony as good as the opening ceremony? Personally, I didn’t think so but, maybe it was just that it was different and a bit like the other recent “pop” concerts that have been doing the rounds. Oh, and if you see the lost people from the Cameroons, tell them they’re needed back home now – they missed it all! written by Kym Wickham

12-year-old’s family charged with murder The body of Tia Sharp was eventually found in the loft of her grandmother’s home, wrapped in a bedsheet and black plastic binbag. The house in The Lindens, New Addington, South London had already been searched by police but it was later revealed that the loft was a connecting one with the neighbouring property and it is possible that the body was moved after the search. Her body was eventually found last Friday after a massive search involving over 100 police, plus friends, neighbours and family. Stuart Hazell (right), her grandmother’s 37-year-old partner was arrested for the murder and appeared by videolink at Camberwell Green Magistrates Court on Monday when he was remanded in custody until his appearance at the Old Bailey today. No plea was entered. A further date for a preliminary hearing at the Old Bailey has been set for November 19th. He is being held in Belmarsh Prison in the meantime.
Since the body was discovered, a large area surrounding the police cordon has been covered in flowers, candles, toys and messages of condolence. Tia’s maternal grandfather Paul Sharp from Newcastle spent some fifteen minutes reading the tributes to his grand-daughter. Tia's mother wept on Sunday as she left a tribute to her daughter alongside hundreds of flowers, teddy bears, candles and cards which carpet the pavement near her grandmother's home. A note believed to have been left by Ms Sharp, 30, read: "Our baby girl, we love you very much and always will. Sorry baby that this has happened, I wish I was there to protect you. We know you are safe now and you are at home with us everywhere we go. Love you, mum, dad, Jack and Harry. XXX." Officers have apologised to Tia's mother,
Natalie Sharp, for the delay in finding her body and conceded mistakes were made. Tia’s grand-mother, Christine Sharp, 46, was originally arrested on suspicion of murder but has since been released on bail. A post-mortem examination was paused on Saturday night and is expected to recommence this week. No cause of death has yet been identified.

Protests over Tourism drive rail fare prices for UK The government are allowing train companies in the UK to raise their fares by an average 11% from the New Year whilst off peak, rush hour and season tickets will rise by well above the inflation rate.
“With the economy flatlining, this is untenable,” said Stephen Joseph, chief executive of the Campaign for Better Transport, adding that it meant that “fares will rise three times faster than salaries”.
A protest campaign at the rises took place yesterday (Tuesday) across the country’s stations with campaigners saying that 15% of salaries are routinely being spent on rail travel to and from work in the capital. They were also campaigning for the railways to be returned to public ownership.
The proposed increases in fares represent 3% above inflation rate and increases could add an extra £1000 to season tickets between 2011 and 2015.
Bob Crow, leader of the Rail Maritime and Transport Union said: “The case for re-nationalising our railways, and throwing the extortionists and rip-off merchants off the tracks, is now overwhelming. The public are sick and tired of being charged through the nose to travel on creaking, overcrowded trains while rail companies are robbing them blind.”
There is also pressure within the coalition to limit price rises. Julian Huppert MP and Lord Bradshaw, cochairs of the Liberal Democrat transport committee, have warned Greening that Lib Dems would not support these fare rises on what was already the most expensive railway in Europe. Huppert said: "People are struggling to make ends meet against a backdrop of wage freezes and rising utility bills. George Osborne has to realise that people cannot be expected to pay huge rises in rail fares on top."
Following on from the success of the London 2012 Olympic games, Britain is going to make a big push for tourism to carry on the money that has been pouring into the country. The drive will be to promote Britain as a tourist destination to places such as China, who sent a large contingent of athletes to the Games. The Chinese are becoming wealthier and are travelling more, spending three times what the average visitor spends when away from home. The main European destination for the Chinese up until now have been Germany and France. The campaign will also be centreing on trying to remind people who have travelled to Great Britain before just how beautiful the country is and encouraging new people to want to travel to the UK. The “VisitBritain” campaign will be spending money on advertising in various countries, working
with airlines and tourism offices abroad. The campaign will also be encouraging the Brits to spend a staycation saying that there are loads of fabulous places to visit in the UK. A spokesperson said: “With places such as Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, all the stately homes to be visited all around the British Isles, our churches, cities, towns and villages, all of which are worthy of visits in their own right, people should be coming here in droves to soak up our history and modern achievements like the Olympic Village, the Gherkin, Tate Modern.... there are just far too many to mention!” The only downside of the country is, of course, the weather that cannot be guaranteed but, looking on the bright side like Eric Idle says, sales for umbrella and wellington manufacturers could once again rocket keeping another UK industry in business.

A fire broke out in a single story Hunt’s Waste recycling centre in Dagenham on Sunday described by local fire chief as “the biggest fire in London for many years” with 40 fire engines and some 200 firefighters. The fire covered an area the size of a football pitch. No injuries were sustained and there were no reports of people being involved apart from the fire fighters.
What is probably the world’s longest running helicopter service is to close at the end of October. Initiated as BEA Helicopters in 1964, the service has carried up to 130,000 passengers a year with often 12 return flights daily. Its successor, British International Helicopters, says that the decision to shut the route was "finally triggered by legal action taken by Tesco and two private individuals". It said that the legal challenges of the planning process prevented the firm from completing the sale of the heliport site to Sainsbury's which would have helped in re-financing the operation and finding a new site. Assuming that the closure goes ahead access to the Scillies will now be a monopoly provided by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company which also owns the Scillies Skybus fixed wing services from Land's End Airport and Newquay. Driving Many London motorists say they are sad that the Games are finally over. With roads practically empty, with local people deciding that London would be a bad place to drive, and tourists deciding to take the buses and trains instead, one driver said driving round the capital had been “wonderful. It was like a dream come true. I got round a lot quicker while doing my jobs.”

Local News Calahonda fire sows panic Some 500 homes in Calahonda were evacuated on Sunday as flames surrounded the area, finally being stopped just a few metres from the most outlying dwellings. The fire started shortly after 9 pm and the emergency number 112 received some 80 calls within a matter of minutes, reporting that the fire was approaching some apartment blocks in the northern part of the area. As a result firemen were able to act rapidly and managed to bring the fire
under control within two hours. More than 160 people took part in the operation – more than 100 firemen from Mijas and Marbella, the Local Police, the Guardia Civil, Proteccion Civil and the Red Cross.
Mayor Angel Nozal, who coordinated the evacuation of some 2,000 people, said that for a while “it looked pretty bad”. The fire destroyed some 30,000 square metres of undergrowth as well as pine and cypress trees.

‘Copycat’ supermarket raid The dust had barely settled after last week’s spectacular supermarket raids by members of the Andalusian Union of workers (SAT) for food for the poor when the first copycat raid was foiled by police in Torreblanca, one of the districts of Seville. A gang of around 21 adults and minors had been holding a street party when they ran out of booze around 5 am on Saturday. They decided to replenish their supply by breaking into a Coviran supermarket but a tip-off to the police spoiled their plan. The police managed to catch three of them – two women and an underage boy – who demanded to know why the SUT workers could get away with stealing carts full of food “and we can’t help ourselves, we’re poor too”.
Torreblanca has one of the highest unemployment rates in Seville. The incident has done nothing to allay fears that the SUT workers’ raids could set off a rash of looting in areas across the region where there is high unemployment.

‘Robin Hood’ mayor unrepentant After a further five members of the Andalusian Union of Workers (SAT) were arrested on Friday for taking part in the supermarket raids coordinated two days earlier by Marinaleda mayor Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo, he told reporters he was willing to give up the immunity conferred on him as an elected member of the Andalusian Parliament for the United Left (IU, Izquierda Unida) party. “I don’t mind going to jail”, he said. The IU hierarchy in Andalucia had sought to distance itself from Gordillo’s rabble-rousing campaign, after one former IU leader, Gaspar Llamazares, initially came out in support of it. The IU formed a coalition government with the Socialist Party after the Partido Popular won the most seats in the March 25th regional election – a move strongly condemned by the controversial mayor. Junta de Andalucia premier, José Antonio Griñán, condemned the supermarket raids as “barbarism”. An unrepentant Gordillo, who has been in office for 33 years since he was first elected, told a national newspaper there would be more raids, commenting that “If my party – and it says so in its manifesto – is anticapitalist, it shouldn’t have a problem”. Gordillo went on: “What is really barbaric is that in Andalusia there are 1.25 million unemployed, 34 per cent of the active population is unemployed, three million people live below the poverty line and, according to the latest report by the Catholic charity Cáritas, there are 350,000 families living on food aid.” He added: “I think what is really serious are the ERE case (Andalusian government corruption scandal), where we are talking about €1.7 billion; the Gürtel scandal (government corruption in Valencia and Madrid); the scandal involving the king’s son-in-law Iñaki Urdangarin; plus there are €100 billion in the underground economy, and our famous sportsmen

don’t pay taxes because they have all their money in tax havens.” Gordilla was speaking at the disused military base on the Las Turquillas estate in Osuna, Seville, which had been occupied by SAT members for the 18 days before 100 police and Guardia Civil moved in to break up a makeshift camp early on Sunday morning.

EWS IN BRIEF
Gordillo, who had previously said the occupation was a “symbolic” gesture to draw attention to the plight of day labourers in Andalusia, said his group would leave the area “peacefully.” SAT spokesman Diego Cañamero said the union wants the disused base to be put up for public auction so it can be bought by a farmers’ collective in the area.

Anonymity for informers The town council has guaranteed anonymity for people who report electricity cable thefts or suspicious behaviour to the local Police. Councillor José Francisco ruiz said the thefts were becoming too frequent, especially in residential areas. “It’s not just a problem of the money the council has to spend to replace the cables but also of the impact the thefts have on the electricity supply.” He urged people who see anything suspicious, like anyone trying to remove manhole covers, to go to the police. He said the police are also stepping up inspections of scrapyards, where the copper cables usually end up. TorremolINoS

T
he national and even international press hailed Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo as a 21st century Robin Hood last week after he organised two raids on supermarkets in Seville by hundreds of land workers belonging to the Andalusian Union of Workers (SAT). This Marxist Utopian mayor of the small town of Marinaleda (pop. 3,000) said the food “expropriated” was to be given to the NGOs that are feeding hungry people all over Andalusia but the president of the biggest one, the Andalusia Food Bank, quickly announced that he couldn’t accept stolen goods. We don’t actually know what happened to the food because after Gordillo enjoyed his 24 hours of fame, the press turned its attention back to the Games in London.
G
ordillo, generally regarded as a Utopian Marxist, would have felt very much at home in the Andalucia of the 1930s, when Communists, Socialists and Anarchists governed small towns pretty much as they pleased, totally beyond the control of the central government in Madrid. At the time, 99 per cent of the land was owned by one per cent of the population – mainly absentee landlord who lived in Madrid – and landworkers (jornaleros) were lucky if they got two month’s work per year. There were no social services to see them through the rest of the year so as you can imagine, their poverty was abysmal and there were a lot of wrongs to be righted.
U
nfortunately a lot of wrongs were committed in the righting of the original wrongs, in Andalucia, Extremadura and Murcia in particular, but also across the country as a whole and the country, giddy with the heady freedom granted willy-nilly by the Second Republic, plunged headlong into civil war. The ensuing dictatorship under Franco turned the clock back and it was only with the transition to democracy after his death in November 1975 that any steps were taken to right the multitude of centuries-old wrongs.
U
nder the country’s current parliamentary monarchy, the political situation has been pretty stable, with each successive government building on the good things done by the previous one. We’ll never know if this process would have continued evolving in such a healthy way because after Spain joined the EU, the subsidies started rolling in, with Andalucia in particular benefiting from generous EU agricultural hand-outs. I know it’s not politically correct to say it, but the Andalucians have a largely-
deserved reputation for indolence. They’re hard workers when they have to seek jobs outside the region or abroad but their dream is to enjoy a life of ease back home in their little towns and villages. And when they see an opportunity to do that, they grab it.
T
he population of Marinaleda received their fair share of subsidies and Gordillo fought hard after he was elected mayor in 1979 to wrest 1,2000 hectares from the 17,000-hectare estate of the local landlord, the Duke of Infantado, which was turned into a cooperative. Added to the generous EU subsidies Gordillo’s people were able to live high off the hog – it’s been reported that some even drive Mercedes and BMW – and as a result he has been re-elected ever since.
H
owever, all good things come to an end and ironically it was a Socialist government that squandered the healthy economy it inherited from Jose Maria Aznar, which doesn’t surprise Gordillo. He belongs to Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) which is sometimes an ally, sometimes an enemy of the Socialist Party. Right now, Gordillo sees the IU as the enemy because it has helped to keep the Socialist Party in power in Andalucia after the Partido Popular won the most seats in the regional election in March. He strongly opposed the IU-Socialist coalition but he was a lone voice crying out in the wilderness. The IU saw an opportunity to enjoy real power for a change and grabbed it.
G
ordillo has promised to continue stealing from the rich (supermarkets) to give to the poor and it will be interesting to see what impact this may have on the IU-Socialist coalition, which is already showing signs of cracks. There are fears that this could be the beginning of a rash of looting across the region as people start jumping on the bandwagon. We’ve already had a case of some bare-faced kids breaking into a supermarket in Seville to get bottles of booze, cigarettes and munchies to keep their street party going. When the police nabbed them, they said if Gordillo’s lot can do it, why can’t we?
H
owever, I suspect the IU will try to keep Gordillo in check because such a blatant attempt to disguise theft as philanthropy doesn’t go down well and could lead to a drop in support at the next election. And that would never do. Even so, Gordillo is a man well worth watching.
P
recisely 60 years ago, the CIA was interested in what was going on across the skies of southern Spain and parts of northern Africa. The US spy agency at the height of the Cold War was drafting reports about a rash of UFO sightings that were being reported in the local Spanish and African press. Recently declassified documents under the CIA's Open Initiative programme show that the intelligence office was taking these sightings quite seriously.
U
nfortunately for UFO conspiracy buffs no conclusions were ever reached about the flying objects people reported seeing from 1952 to 1956; in fact, the reports firmly state that they contain “unevaluated information.” Yet some of the summaries are surprising, and there are a few entries in which the CIA describes some of the observers as being solid sources and "level headed". A few accounts are uncanny and leave much to the imagination.
O
n August 10th, 1952 a Cuenca resident said he saw what he described as “a flying saucer” while walking the Cuenca-Madrid road. “It crossed the sky at high speed in a matter of seconds. The object was round and gave off two luminous trails,” details a report prepared on November 24th of that same year. Other entries give better descriptions and testimonies from more than one eyewitness who reported seeing strange phenomena above their heads.
F
or example, in an entry from August 22nd, 1952, “several inhabitants of Puerto Real, six kilometres from San Fernando, recently saw two elongated oval objects in the sky approaching each other from opposite directions. When it seemed that they were about to collide, each object just made a right turn, picked up speed, and then disappeared. The objects flew at a great height, seemed lead grey in colour, and appeared to be piloted.”
T
hen we have another account by four professors of the Seraphic Seminary in Palma de Mallorca who on September 4th, 1952 “noticed a luminous disk in the sky, travelling from west to east. They said it could not have been a shooting star and that they were giving the report as objectively as
possible in its barest details to provide another item for the study of flying saucer phenomenon.”
O
ne witness, a journalist, in Barcelona, said that he saw a strange object flying at high speed from El Prat airport. “It did not look like an aircraft (neither Prat nor Sabadell airport admitted any knowledge of the object), and unlike the so-called flying saucers, it was proceeding in a straight line, without flashes of light or revolving on a axis,” the witness Valentín García told a local newspaper in a report published on May 21st, 1952. He went on to describe the object as being “rocket shaped” with smoke coming out of “two points”.
“
My colleagues at the office saw the smoke but not the object. Over Badalona, about 10 kilometres away, the object stopped trailing smoke, disappeared from a few seconds, and reappeared, again emitting smoke, several kilometres further away. The newspaper office was soon flooded with telephone calls from people who had seen the object,” García reported.
W
ith paranoia gripping the United States at the time about the so-called secret weapons the Soviet Union was developing, the CIA no doubt was interested in these reports of UFOs, extraordinary as they may seem. We now know that the US government was in the middle of developing a space programme and had worked swiftly to recruit dozens of Nazi scientists under Operation Paperclip at the end of World War II.
T
he Soviets had also done their share of recruiting and were advancing towards a historic milestone by being the first nation to send a satellite into space. We can only guess that the CIA must have believed that the Soviets may have been using skies over Spain and North Africa for the test flights of some of these new vehicles. But regardless of the reasoning, the documents demonstrate that US intelligence officers were spending a lot of time gathering information on something mysterious that many claimed was occurring across Spain’s skies back then.

How to keep your eyes safe in the sun Now it’s the height of summer and more people head to the beaches to soak up the glorious Spanish sunshine, we’ll all be wearing sun screen to protect our skin from the rays, but how many people think about protecting their eyes? A well-known optician is urging everyone to remember to take care of their eyes when they are outdoors with the most effective sunglasses. They say: “Providing they meet European safety standards, sports-style sunglasses not only protect your eyes but also help reduce premature ageing. Sunlight creeping in at the side of badly fitting frames can make you squint, leading to crows’ feet around the eyes. Excessive exposure to UV rays causes a painful irritation to the cornea at the front of the eye. In extreme circumstances this can lead to cancer of the cornea, age related macular degeneration, cataracts and even blindness.”
Qualified opticians stock a large selection of prescription sunglasses styles and will usually also fit tinted lenses to other frames within their range to create prescription sunglasses and one wellknown company is even offering free reaction lenses and 2 for 1 on their sunglasses range throughout the summer. Follow these top tips from them to protect your eyes when enjoying the Costa del Sol’s famous weather this summer: 1. Check sunglasses comply with UNE-EN 1836:2006 + A1:2008 or bear the CE kite mark and are marked UV 400. 2. If you already have sunglasses, take them into your local optician to be UV tested.. 3. Invest in photochromic lenses that instantly adapt to light changes, darkening in bright light. Alternatively, get prescription lenses
tinted to minimize the amount of UV rays that reach your eyes. 4. By adding polarized lenses you can decrease the amount of glare, which can dazzle and strain your vision; particularly useful when you are participating in outdoor sports. 5. For driving, UltraDrive lenses provide excellent eye protection in bright light by blocking out all UV light and up to 92% of blue light, making colours appear sharper. They also conform to European driving guidelines. If you have any doubts about the type of sunglasses you are using, take them to a qualified optician to have them checked or buy new ones. You only have one pair of eyes – keep them safe, and if money’s tight, you’re far better off properly protecting your eyes than buying a new expensive cossie!
Másmóvil representing Spain MÁSMÓV!L, the mobile phone operator, has been selected to represent Spain as one of the 50 National Finalists in the European Business Awards (www.businessawardseuro pe.com), which will take place in April, 2013.The European Business Awards have identified some of the European businesses that excel in the three principal areas recognised by these awards – namely innovation, business excellence and sustainability. MÁSMÓV!L has been selected in the "Customer Focus" category due to both its excellence in offering good quality, low cost services to its customers as well as for its multilingual customer support service. "We at MÁSMÓV!L are very pleased to have been selected to represent Spain. We have been operating for about six years in the Spanish mobile phone sector and it is an honour to be recognised as one of the national leaders in the sector. The European Business Awards are widely recognised by the principal businesses in Europe. We can't wait for the next round of the competition", says Christian Nyborg, co-
founder of MÁSMÓV!L. The European Business Awards are committed to increasing the visibility of businesses that both excel at innovation and demonstrate commercial success while, at the same time, act with responsibility and professionalism and have a positive impact on the environments in which they operate. Adrian Tripp, CEO of The European Business Awards, says, "Over the past six years we have received a large number of high-level business candidates. Very few, however, have the honour of representing their country and competing across Europe for recognition as a leading European business. To be selected as a National Finalist really is a significant recognition and we look forward to seeing MÁSMÓV!L in the next round of the competition".

Community News Young artists exhibiting The latest exhibition at Galería Cutarte in Cútar is an exciting new venture by 13 young artists from Málaga city – showing a wide variety of work ranging from painting and photography to installations and performance art. Most of the group are in their midtwenties and all share an interest in exploring the creative potential of their generation of artists – a generation they feel is amongst the least recognised and most affected by the current changes in society. All the young artists live or work in Málaga city – but several have spent time abroad. Antonio Sanchez is currently a student at The Faculty of Fine Art at Málaga University and has also studied art in
Stockholm. “We all get together at the same bars in Málaga and discuss our ideas” he says “that's how I met those who don't study with me at the university” From this meeting of minds has emerged this inspiring new exhibition. And while they share many common ideas, their work is strikingly varied. Antonio Rodríguez uses photography to examine aspects of everyday life. Luis Lisbona makes sculptures which have a more political focus – commenting, for example, on the poorly thought-out policies that left Spain with an unstable economy based on building development. Mary Garlic on the
other hand is a fashion design student at San Telmo in Málaga, but she is more interested in pursuing her ideas through her drawings and especially her performance art. The exhibition has been commissioned by Galería Cutarte – a new gallery in the village of Cútar, north-west of Vélez-Málaga set up and managed by four local artists. The Young Artists exhibition is just the first in an exciting programme of exhibitions they are putting together to provide a pioneering showcase for innovative and inspiring work by other artists. They also work with individuals and groups in Cútar on exhibitions that
celebrate the culture and creativity of the area – the latest being a portrait of the village seen through handmade artworks and objects made by more than 80 local residents. “Contemporary Art by young artists from Málaga” will be open every Saturday up to and including 25th August from 11.00 - 14.00 and from 18.00-21.00. It will also be open at these times on the 17th and 19th of August for the Cútar Feria. You will find the gallery on Calle Estación 3, 29718 Cútar, Velez-Malaga. For more information about the exhibition and the gallery see www.cutarte.com or email info@cutarte.com

St. Trinians for MABS meet cancelled a good cause but volunteers needed While dining along Calle Moncayo, Fuengirola (known locally as “Fish Alley” because of all the fresh fish restaurants that used to be along there being so close to the fishing port) last Friday, you may have come across three ladies dressed up in St. Trinians gear collecting money in buckets for the breast cancer charity Positively Pink.
SFS
The charity pays for mammograms for the women on the Costa del Sol who may have fallen through the net by leaving the UK to come and live in Spain – and, ladies, there are a lot of us – or who have no medical insurance or access to a doctor here within the realms of their purse strings. The ladies managed to collect €450 on the night which together with previous money they had collected in Benalmadena, brought them to a grand total of €970 – just €30 short of their €1000 target. They are planning on having a fun day on 22nd September to add to the charity – we will tell you more about soon.
The MABS Cancer support meeting at Miraflores for the month of August has been cancelled.
Aims of the Group The aim of the Group is to help men and women affected by cancer, with deep understanding, providing confidential ‘one- to-one’ support for them and their families. Helping them to look beyond the diagnosis, cope with the treatment, to live life comfortably. Their members know first-hand how it feels to be told you have cancer, or that someone close to you has been diagnosed with it. They understand the feeling of despair at not knowing where to turn for immediate and long-term support and practical help which can be found with

Still time to visit the Malaga Feria Another year on, and the joint Brotherhoods are not missing out on their annual participation in the Malaga Day Feria, and have the ‘Caseta El Postigo de Juan’ in the house of Niño Jesús (calle Pozos Dulces 21). The venue has a traditional Málaga style patio, possibly the most conventional within the feria ground. There will be traditional dishes at reasonable prices and good music for the whole family to enjoy. Part of the funds raised by the Brotherhoods and friends of the ‘caseta’, will go to Cudeca, together with the other important social causes within the community of Malaga.
The caseta is open everyday from 1pm until 7pm, and you can reserve your meal in advance any day (limited seating) via email: secretaria@cofradiasfusiona das.org or telephone 952 22 20 37. Have a look at page 17 for details of how you can get to the Feria without having to take your car into the city with the Royal British Legion if you’re from Coin or the surrounding area for a safe and hasslefree trip with no parking fees to contend with. And here you can see some photos taken by our rep, Adrian, of this year’s Day Feria - Don’t miss out!

By Seth MacFarlane Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane, Joel McHale “Ted” is the first feature from the creator of ‘Family Guy’ and ‘American Dad’ and shares their hypersavvy sense of humour and yen for man-creature buddy dynamics. Though not as nuanced or engaging as Brian the dog from “Family Guy” or Roger the alien from “American Dad”, the computer-animated Ted – voiced by MacFarlane – is of the same type, surfing on his share of neuroses but basically the smartest guy in
the room. If he were a guy. Christmas, Boston, 1985. Seven-year-old John wishes his teddy could come to life and be his best friend forever. A star shoots by, the wish is granted, delight ensues. Then the bear works the talk shows, becomes a has-been and turns into a feckless hanger-on as John becomes a thirtysomething delayed adolescent with a taste for bongs and kitsch
pop culture. That bit’s very Seth MacFarlane. Whether you enjoy the movie will depend on how much you like Ted. There are plenty of strong gags of the MacFarlane school, and the funniest moments involve Ted in full, rude flow, either holding forth or engaged in brawling, partying and other unteddybearlike activities. Other than that, there’s little going on.
MacFarlane opts for a predictable story in which the adult John is under pressure from his girlfriend to get his shit together. She’s fending off a slimeball at work and Ted is being bugged by a fan, and that’s it. The plot runs out of steam, squandering its jeopardy and limping towards a cop-out climax with no technical flair to keep things going.

e Monk
Starring: Val Kilmer, Luke Goss & Ving Rhames 7 Below is a chilling new supernatural thriller in the vein of The Ring meets The Grudge.
With a phenomenal lead performance from Black Swan star Vincent Cassel, The Monk is a terrifying take on the infamous gothic horror novel of the same name, directed by Dominik Moll (Harry He's Here to Help, Lemming).
After a tour bus accident leaves a group of strangers stranded, they accept shelter from a mysterious loner named Jack (Ving Rhames), who has his own reasons for wanting the group to stay in his home. Trapped by a raging storm outside they encounter an evil presence in the foreboding house linked to a series of brutal murders that occurred more than 100 years ago. As strange and horrifying

A proud monk, whose virtuous sermons earn him the admiration of all, is certain he is safe from all temptation. But when a mysterious presence enters the monastery, he is plagued by a strange and deadly mania that leads him to seek help from a beautiful and mysterious woman. thought it would be fitting to review a film from a very British director. en Loach, known as the K king of British social realism, made his name by bringing us films that packed a punch at society. “Kathy Come Home” and “Poor Cow” made a big impact on cinema goers of the ‘60’s for their raw truths. He continues to make excellent films, all pretty much of the same ilk, and although his film making talent cannot be denied, I find much of his work uncomfortable and difficult to watch. n my opinion, his best Ifrom film by far, is “Kes”. Taken the book by Barry Hines “A Kestrel for a Knave”, we follow the sad life of 15-year-old Billy Casper. Bullied at school and ignored and abused by his indifferent mother, and older brother, Billy finds solace in training a young kestrel he finds in the woods, with the help of falconry books from the local library.
scene of mine is when a small boy is sent to the headmaster’s office to deliver a message and is caned by the headmaster who mistakenly believes he belongs to the ‘smoking gang’ there to be punished. There is no doubt that the tears he sheds after the caning are very real, and the 50 pence extra that the caned boys were apparently paid above their wages probably wasn’t worth the pain! he comic interlude on Tmorethe football pitch owes to the late Brian Glover’s personality than his acting skills as the arrogant bullying sports master. The film, of course, ends badly after Billy fails to place a winning bet for his brother Judd, but what else could we expect? It is a Ken Loach film. illy’s predicament B seemed sad at the time as all the careers officer could offer him was a job in the coal mine where he definitely did not want to work. Today, there aren’t any pits left to work down, so maybe the future is even bleaker for the kids now.

school teacher, and Lynne Perrie gives us an excellent performance as Billy’s mother (two years before she became Corrie’s Ivy Tilsley). he film is packed with Tandbitter sweet moments poignancy. A favourite
He was cast as Billy because he was the puniest kid in the school and although he did other stuff, he never really made it. One of the reasons could have been the audacity he showed by patting the great Jack Hawkins on the back at an award ceremony, which I am sure did not go unnoticed. More recently, he wrote an open letter to Daniel Ratcliffe (Harry Potter) warning him of the dangers of childhood stardom! (I’m sorry…you are Dai who?)

This is a time for self honesty about where you are on the path and what you now need to do about where you are going. The only way to move forward is one that honours what you know to be your destined life course. When your emotions resonate then life starts to click and make sense again. Things start to slot into place and you take the actions that you know you must in order to move your life onto the next level. You may have been sitting on the fence but that never got anyone anywhere did it? You will feel yourself being lifted off the indecision but may not feel the true wind at your back until the weekend. More confidence and certainty will begin to swell in your heart and you will be back on track again. Between now and then, communicate with colour and passion; reach out to those you know are on your same page. Your creative capacity is on the increase and this could reflect in turning a better corner in certain key relationships. It all depends on where your focus lies, when we feel good we may find that a worry or a burden may shift. Personal finances may require some attention and a closer look, check your income against your outgoings and make adjustments. Budgets and plans are highlighted. You will be taking a serious look at the future. The key to success often lies in your ability to stay calm, quiet and collected in the middle of chaos, even when life has become wildly out of control around you. The safest place and the quietest space in the next several days will prove to exist in those quiet moments alone. Life may be feeling unpredictable and uncertain with no end in sight. Try and accomplish as much as you can in the first part of the week as you can get a lot sorted out The setbacks and the derailing that occurs at times can be so off putting and discouraging that you forget who you are and where you are going. It is the matters of the heart and soul that take precedence and something in recent weeks reminded you where your head needs to be in order for those to remain a top priority. There are events in life that can stop us in our tracks and as challenging as these events can be, they ultimately keep us on course

Somewhere in you, you feel you are reaching a breaking or boiling point. You are in the process of creating more ground rules for living your life and for how you relate to others and to the world at large. This will energise key talks and exchanges with friends or people key in a networking process that will lead September 23rd - to some encouraging news, information that is bound to inject you with a October 22nd new-found confidence again.

October 23rd November 21st
Seeing the wood for the trees can be mystifying at times. When things stall and slow, it can make you wonder if the sun will ever penetrate the dark shade and shine in your life again. Wherever you have lost faith, prepare for a piece of that hope to be regained. You cannot take the things you have for granted - the more you care for and appreciate what you have, the more you will get in return. When you speak others will listen.

...you don’t have to be a chef!
Imagine golden brown, flaky, light pastry oozing with melting cheese and sweet peppers and you're thinking ... well I know what I’m thinking!
Baked Camembert and mixed pepper flaky parcels Ingredients:
(Serves 2)
• 425g pack frozen puff pastry • 150g round petit Camembert • 4 tbsp cooked mixed peppers from a jar • Black pepper • Sprig of fresh thyme leaves • 1 egg yolk
Directions Ready in 30-35 minutes 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6 and pop a baking sheet in to heat. Unroll one thawed sheet from a 425g pack frozen puff pastry. Cut in half to give two wide rectangles. 2. Cut 150g round petit Camembert in half to make two semi-circles, then cut each half horizontally to give four semi-circles. Place one piece of cheese in the centre of each pastry rectangle, then top with a good tablespoonful of cooked mixed peppers (best
from a jar). Put the two remaining cheese semi-circles on top of the peppers, season with black pepper and sprinkle with some fresh thyme. 3. Beat an egg yolk with a little water. Brush the pastry edges with egg, then bring up the pastry to form a parcel. Press the edges to seal with a fork, then brush each parcel with more egg. Transfer to the hot baking sheet and cook for 20-25 minutes. Bake until golden and cooked through. Serve with a green salad.
POCO A POCO
SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell
G o, g o, g o (Par t 2) How do you say "go" in Spanish? Two weeks ago we looked at some of the more common ways we use the word "go". Go also appears in a variety of phrases which in Spanish often have a completely separate word.
For example to go in (enter) is entrar. To go out is salir Go up - subir Go down - bajar Go back - volver
something will strike you so suddenly that your recent ‘wondering’ will be replaced with a true ‘knowing’ once again. It is very likely you may experience some personal tests or temptations during the first part of the week, play it November 22nd - straight and you will be rewarded beyond your wildest dreams. Others will be st December 21 attracted to you and your social status increases in popularity.
All very well you say. But how do we go about putting these words into a sentence?
CAPRICORN Life may feel like it is getting harder by the day, like you are going to battle to

end a certain chapter and along with this struggle comes a feeling of suffocation. Things will start to shift shortly and you will be able to breathe a sigh of relief. Keep your nose to the grindstone, and summon up your inner December 22nd - strength, directing it at your current goals and objectives and allow nothing January 19th to distract or side-track you.

A bigger picture will come into focus to help you navigate through the current unpredictable cosmic climate. A key contact, either a friend or a friend of a friend helps you network your way into a better land of opportunity and you begin to feel hopeful again. A transformation is taking place in the realm of your relationships with others, it is not super-charged with emotions, but it is the way it is supposed to be.
You may feel that you have a greater support network around you than you have had in a while with a stronger foundation from which to spring. All the problems will not fix themselves over night but you are in the process of creating a solid game plan and as a result will be working your way into better territory. The clarity you need in order to know which way to step is either here or coming. Trust and pause if you must until next week when the way will seem clearer.
LESSON
August 23rd September 22nd
Something that is stressing you out is coming to a close. An odd pressure is progressively building and you have a sense that something is not going to go away. This pressure will give you the tools to enable you to forge ahead and naturally sense the path ahead of you. Hope and a clear and passionate purpose enters your life again. Your heart is happily in the game, the world is your oyster once more.

Easy - Fácil. In fact, facilísimo - really easy. Just put them together with some of the shortcut verbs we have learned in the past or seen in my Short-cut books.
Child's play. Wouldn't you say? And, of course, not going just needs a "no" at the beginning. No vamos a entrar - We're not going to go in. No tenemos que subir - We don't have to go up. No queremos bajar - We don't want to go down. No podemos volver - We can't go back. Remember, keep practising with the short-cuts and you'll be communicating in no time. Pursuing an active life with arthritis Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in most western countries, but a few simple adjustments can make life easier and less painful for the millions of people who currently let this common condition limit what they are able to do and enjoy. The changes can be as simple as playing with grandchildren on the couch or at a table, instead of on the floor, said one grandfather, Dr. Kenneth Brandt, who is also an orthopaedic surgeon and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Centre.
joints can atrophy – use them or lose them – and result in even more pain and stiffness." He suggested consulting a physical therapist or exercise physiologist to help design "an exercise programme that permits loading joints appropriately."
The trick is to decide what activities are important to you and then modify them in ways that ease symptoms like pain, stiffness and fatigue. Arthritis may be a mechanical disability, but it need not turn people into couch potatoes.
Simplify kitchen chores
Even with relatively advanced arthritis, it is important to maintain an exercise regimen, with modifications as needed to minimise overuse of damaged joints. "You should exercise affected joints," Dr. Brandt said. "Muscles around the
In an article called "Cooking with ease" in the magazine Arthritis SelfManagement, Nancy Callinan, an occupational therapist in Minneapolis, described adaptations for both ordinary and gourmet cooks with troubled joints. For starters, why struggle to open a jar or can? Sam Farber, a retired entrepreneur, invented the widely imitated OXO Good Grips kitchen tools to help ease his wife’s arthritis. Whether for opening wine bottles or slicing
bread, Dr. Brandt recommends a "judicious investment" in tools designed to make culinary tasks easier. Why exhaust yourself standing up for long periods to prepare food? There are tools and stools that can make the tasks so much easier. In her article, Ms. Callinan also wondered why anyone with arthritis would spend hours washing and cutting up vegetables, cheese, meat, poultry, even garlic when every supermarket carries food that is already washed, sliced, diced, shredded or chopped. If you must do it yourself, she advised, invest in a mandolin, food processor and/or tabletop mixer.
and silverware can be stored on pull-out shelves or a Lazy Susan, for example. Perhaps you can install hooks near your stove to hang frequently used cookware.
Whether in the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom or laundry room, frequently used items can be made more easily accessible, minimising the amount of bending and reaching you must do. Dishes, glasses
Rather than trying to lift large, heavy containers of flour, detergent or other products purchased in bulk, consider transferring them to smaller storage containers that are easier to lift and handle.
Instead of using heavy ceramic or glass bowls, use lightweight plastic or stainless steel for preparing food. And cook in quantity and freeze portions for later use.

The over-70s should be inspired by the Olympics to take up competitive sport, delegates at the Active Ageing Congress in Glasgow were told this week. Dawn Skelton, professor of ageing and health at Glasgow Caledonian University, said too few elderly people are playing sport and taking exercise, which leaves them frailer than they need to be. "If you are not fit, you cannot maintain an independent and active lifestyle. For example, if you are not fit and you fall, you cannot get up again whereas if you are active, you can," she said. The recommended amount of
exercise for over-75s is 30 minutes of moderate activity every day but delegates were told only 7% of UK adults in this age group achieve the recommended level. For those who want an easy way to improve their fitness experts recommend regular walking. It is accessible, safe, and you do not have to wear lycra. The 93-year-old Swiss rowing champion Dr Charles Eugster, who took up the sport at the age of 78, told the conference: "I am one of very few who reach this age, but in 20 to 30 years' time one in every five citizens of any European country will be in their 90s or will have reached a full
century. This is an absolutely staggering fact." He added: "My plan for the next few years is to change the world. My trainer and I have shown that it is possible to rebuild bodies at almost any age and any older person’s life can be rebuilt.” He said it proves old people are not worthless, but can be recycled and something new made of them: "I want to unleash the physical and economic potential of the aged. We can be creative and using the talents of the old we can make a major contribution to society so that we are no longer viewed as a liability but a valued asset."
Dr Eugster has won more than 100 competitions and is now in training to achieve the perfect beach body by the age of 94.

From Sex And e Single Girl to editor of one of the best known magazines of the 80s
A great magazine icon dies aged 90 … between her and Germaine Greer, they changed women’s thinking Helen Gurley Brown was hired by publisher Hearst to revive the magazine after the success of her book Sex And The Single Girl in 1962 that was to be published in 28 countries and translated into 16 languages.
she is looking at through the glass her nose is pressed against.”
The magazine became famous for its openminded and sometimes controversial views on sex under her leadership where she was editor for 32 years.
Brown was born in Arkansas in February 1922, later moving to Los Angeles. She worked as a secretary in an advertising agency before moving on to write copy and becoming one of the highest paid advertising executives in the country. She married former Cosmo managing editor and film director David Brown who encouraged her to write books and wrote a further five after

the success of Sex And The Single Girl. Cosmo’s mission, set out by Helen Gurley Brown in her first editorial, “Step Into My Parlor”, in June 1965, was to appeal to the “grown-up girl, interested in whatever can give you a richer, more exciting, funfilled, friend-filled, man-loved kind of life!” Her message was a strange mixture of servitude and empowerment. Men, she taught, are there to be trapped and kept by being made to feel wonderful and given sex whenever and however they want it. But women should also be independent, with successful careers, earning money and,
above all, enjoying sex. “Sex is wonderful and to be a sex object is fabulous,” she proclaimed. In Helen Gurley Brown’s world, men, love, work, achievement and fun all had to be pursued as if by an athlete in training: “My message is, there is no letup, ever.” Her editors were given strict injunctions that there should be “no glums, no dour feminist anger and no motherhood”. Cosmo was the first mainstream women’s magazine to feature a nude male centrefold — of Burt Reynolds, in 1972. A typical edition from the 1960s featured articles on “Why plain Janes get

ahead”; “Sexy secrets your mother never dared tell you”; “What men and women do wrong in bed”; “Get a high jump in your job”; and “Losing those last five pounds”. It frequently contained useful tips on modern etiquette from the editor: “When people ask how many partners you have
had,” she advised, “the correct answer is always three.” Mrs. Gurley Brown stepped down as the editor of the American version of the magazine in 1997 but remained as editor of the 64 international editions until her death.

Adrian said: "I had been watching the film The Bank Job on TV while Gillian was out with friends. When she got back we decided to turn over and catch up on the news. Scrolling along the bottom of the screen was the news that one person had won EuroMillions." Gillian told Adrian she had forgotten to buy a ticket and he joked he hadn't got one either, though he had really bought five lines.
Their young son had woken up crying and Gillian was re-settling the children so Adrian checked the numbers on his phone. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I rushed back and turned on the main light, at which point Gillian went ballistic. The kids were awake by now. I was trying to tell her that we

buildings – if used right for the future, could once again truly put the “Great” back in Great Britain.
As I am sure I am not the only one who finds watcing sports unutterably boring, on behalf of all of us I would like to say a heartfelt “Thank God that’s over for another four years!” It seemed to totally dominate the evening programming of the BBC, cancelling out anything even remotely interesting that they might have otherwise put on.
Thousands of my fellow city dwellers turned out and volunteered to help out as guides for the games, with not a penny being charged, and by all accounts did the whole thing with a smile and a welcoming attitude to the whole of the rest of the world.
However, as I am a throughand-through Londoner I would add that I thought that my city had done the nation proud. The opening and closing ceremonies were true works of art and the legacy of the

Curiosity about Mars be full of nasty things like muggings, stabbings and murders going on in our capital city either. It would appear that all Londoners got in with the spirit of the games, kept it clean and friendly – and that is what “my” London is all about – long may it last!
Perhaps it’s just my perception but the TV news didn’t seem to

Alhaurin el Grande along to their local Guardia Civil and report it to Seprona who deal with all things animal. So I went and spoke to a Guardia Civil officer, showing him the picture of the cat. His answer was: “What’s that?”. I told him what it was and where I’d found it so he told me it was nothing to do with them and I should go all the way back to Alhaurin de la Torre and report it there. I explained to him that, as an endangered and protected species, I had to report it to Seprona that were on his premises, not in Alhaurin de la Torre so he said there was noone there and he’d phone the people in de la Torre to go and have a look as long as it could be
The other day I was driving along the road between Alhaurin de la Torre and Alhaurin el Grande when I spotted, lying in the middle of the road, a large spotted cat. I turned my car around and moved the poor dead animal from the middle of the carriageway onto the verge and took a photograph. This may sound ghoulish to some but this was an unusual creature that had obviously been knocked by a car and left there. I showed the picture to one of the well known animal charities who told me that it was an Iberian Lynx and that, because it is an endangered and protected species I should go

seen from their car. To say I was astounded is putting it very mildly! His atitude was that I was being a total pain and I bet he never did anything about it at all. The fact that these are endangered animals in itself should have provoked a reaction but this guy was so laid back he was nearly asleep and I swear he didn’t even know that Seprona was in the same building. What if this animal had babies that are now unable to feed? With this attitude the Iberain Lynx soon won’t be merely endangered, it will be extinct and the main danger to them is sheer apathy from people like him!

Once again the UK are rolling out all the old “Stars” for their big events. Annie Lennox at the Olympics closing ceremony must surely have been on drugs to come out in front of a crowd looking the way she did. George Michael was all puffy and wearing stuff that was more suitable to someone much younger, the Pet Shop Boys should have closed for business decades ago, Muse... what can I say, why was someone else singing Pinball Wizard? As far as I know Roger Daltry and Pete Townsend are still alive – but maybe Daltry’s lost his voice due to age too? The same goes for John Deacon of Queen. Why wasn’t he playing alongside Roger Taylor and Brian May? Paul McCartney still can’t sing and
what was all that poncing about with the models who couldn’t walk in the heels they were wearing all about? On the other hand, they were possibly all better than Fat Boy Slim making out he was being a DJ in the middle of a giant see-through and sparkly octopus. We have so many great new artistes in the UK, why couldn’t some of them appeared alongside One Dimension who, it would appear, sang a lot better than a lot of others? Best of the night? Eric Idle’s Always Look On the Bright Side Of Life which should definitely have closed the show with a definite feel great, let alone feel good feeling. Well done Mr Idle, you made my night worth watching!
While the rest of the world was watching the Olympics, in the early hours of Monday 6th August NASA successfully landed the Curiosity Rover onto the surface of Mars.
C
uriosity is the biggest,
most technically advanced Rover ever built. Its job is to determine once and for all if life has ever existed on Mars. The scientists are so sure of the Rover’s capabilities that they have said “If Curiosity doesn’t find signs of life on Mars, then there has never been any”.
sent its first tweet “I'm inside the orbit of Deimos and completely on my own. Wish me luck!”
T
S
he Rover was launched from Cape Canaveral in November 2011 and travelled over 350million miles to reach Mars. When sending a rocket to Mars, the scientists have to aim the rocket not where Mars is but where it will be by the time it gets there. As it arrived at Mars it was travelling at over 37,000mph and because it has no ‘brakes’ to slow it down it must slip into a very narrow band in the Martian atmosphere and be captured by Mars’ gravity. If it comes in too steeply it will simply crash into the planet’s surface, too shallow and it will skip back out into space like a pebble across a pond.
C
uriosity’s landing procedure was a series of the most hair raising, complicated and risky stages ever dreamt up by NASA and was described as being ‘seven minutes of terror’ – and all carried out remotely by the rocket itself.
S S
tage 1: At about 6200 miles from Mars the space craft orientated itself so that the heat shield was facing forward into the Martian atmosphere. tage 2: The Martian atmosphere acted as a brake gradually slowing the craft down by rubbing against the heat shield. Temperatures of over 2000ºC were recorded as the rocket continued to swing around the back of Mars. But because the Martian atmosphere is so thin then it is only capable of slowing the rocket down to only twice the speed of sound, the same speed that Concorde flew at.
S
tage 3: It then fired 76 pyrotechnic release bolts that jettisoned the heat shield and deployed a huge parachute. The parachute had to be strong enough to withstand this sudden jolt and gradually slowed the Rover down to around 200mph; it was now flying through the thin Martian atmosphere seeking out its landing point. It takes 14 minutes for radio signals to travel from Curiosity back to Earth and so it is only now that Curiosity
tage 4: Now came the tricky bit, Curiosity took a leap of faith and cut the cords attached to the parachute. As it began to fall towards the surface at 200mph retro rockets reminiscent of Thunderbird 2 ignited and gradually brought the whole craft to within 100 ft above its destination at Gale Crater on Mars.
S
tage 5: Now, incredibly, as the craft hovered above the surface, held aloft by the retro rockets, a sky crane gently lowered the rover to the surface on nylon ropes. Once the Rover had detected that it was on solid ground it released the sky crane which flew away to crash land nearby. And now NASA had to wait an agonising 14 minutes to hear from Curiosity.
E
ventually the signal came through that Curiosity had made a successful landing and was sitting on the surface of Mars. It will undergo a weeklong series of tests to make sure that it is road worthy and then it will begin its exploration of the surrounding crater.
C
uriosity is about the same size as a 4X4 Range Rover and is equipped not only with sensitive 3D cameras but also an array of scientific equipment to study the Martian soil. It has a powerful laser beam on board to vaporise rocks so as to determine their chemical structure. It can drill deep inside rocks and below the soil looking for even the smallest of evidence of whether Mars ever contained just the right chemicals for life to take hold.
I
can’t help but wonder, if there are any tiny Martians, imagine what they must think when this huge monster arrives on their planet with its ‘Death Ray’ laser beam. H.G.Wells got it the wrong way round and we invaded Mars instead! Enjoy your Stargazing!

Anger Over 'Massive' Train Fare Hikes
The amount by which rail fares could rise from January is to be revealed, with some commuters set to see rises of more than double the rate of inflation. The Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of inflation - expected to remain at 2.8% - is used to calculate the rises. Some English fares will rise by RPI plus 3%. The figures for planned rises in England and Scotland are an average across regulated tickets, which make up half of all fares. These regulated fares include season tickets and off-peak intercity journeys.

Ducati helps earthquake-hit area of Emilia Romagna Just a few months after the major earthquake that hit the Italian region of Emilia Romagna, a simple yet heartfelt ceremony was held at the Ducati factory in Borgo Panigale, Bologna on Friday, 3th August to mark the donation of three Volkswagen Crafter Kombi vans, purchased with funds raised by Ducati workers, Ducati Clubs from all over the world and, of course the company itself. At the ceremony, attended by company managers and hundreds of company employees, Gabriele Del Torchio, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, formally handed over the keys to three Volkswagen Crafter Kombi vans to Fernando Ferioli, Mayor of Finale Emilia, Claudio Broglia, Mayor of Crevalcore and Rudi Accorsi, Mayor of San Possidonio. The ceremony represented solidarity from Ducati for three of the region’s hardest-hit towns that are also home to many Ducati employees and several of the firm’s suppliers whose facilities were damaged in the earthquake. The fund-raising began immediately after the earthquake and continued
until World Ducati Week 2012, the international Ducati rally held from 21st24th June 2012 at Misano Adriatico. The event attracted over 65,000 visitors and enabled Ducati to involve Ducati Owner Clubs from all over the world and the vast Ducati community who all responded to the appeal enthusiastically and generously. Fund-raising was organised by trade union representatives from the company and, in addition to donations made by Ducati , Ducati employees
and Ducati Clubs, a series of initiatives linked to online Ducati website sales also helped to increase the proceeds towards the purchase of the three vans.

Rossi returns to Yamaha Italian motorcycling great Valentino Rossi will leave Ducati at the end of the MotoGP season and rejoin Yamaha on a two-year deal, the Japanese-owned team said on Friday. "In June, we were able to sign Jorge Lorenzo for the 2013-14 campaign and now we are able to confirm Valentino Rossi for the next two years," Yamaha Motor Racing managing director Lin Jarvis said in a statement. The 33-year-old ninetimes world champion – seven in the premier class – first joined Yamaha in 2004 and won four MotoGP titles with the manufacturer before agreeing a two-year deal with Ducati at the end of the 2010 season. However, the dream of pairing up Italy's best-
known rider with Italy's top team turned into a nightmare and he finished seventh on an uncompetitive bike last year. This season has been just as bad with Rossi lying eighth. Jorge Lorenzo believes there will still be a fierce rivalry between himself and Valentino Rossi when they again race as Yamaha team-mates in MotoGP. They endured a fractious relationship after Lorenzo joined Yamaha Factory Racing in 2008 before seven-time MotoGP champion Rossi left for Ducati in 2010. Lorenzo's current team-mate, Ben Spies, had already confirmed he will leave Yamaha at the end of the season.

Team Sky announce squad for Vuelta a España Team Sky have confirmed their squad for the 67th edition of the Vuelta a España, which commences in Pamplona on Saturday 18th August. Chris Froome will lead the team after his secondplace finish at the Tour de France and bronze medalwinning performance for Great Britain at the Olympic Games. The 27 year old will be looking to improve upon his secondplace finish in last year’s Vuelta, where he finished
one place ahead of teammate Bradley Wiggins. Froome will be joined in an incredibly strong nineman squad by Juan Antonio Flecha, Sergio Henao, Danny Pate, Richie Porte, Ian Stannard, Ben Swift, Rigoberto Urán and Xabier Zandio. Rigoberto Urán (pictured) already has a top-10 Grand Tour finish to his name this season, winning the young rider’s classification on his way to a career-best seventh
Cameron guarantees Team GB funding Prime Minister David Cameron has assured British athletes that government and National Lottery cash would continue to fund their training programmes through to the 2016 Rio Olympics as well as appointing London 2012 chairman Seb Coe as Olympic legacy ambassador. Britain, hosting the Games in London for the third time, enjoyed its best Olympic performance since 1908 with 29 golds and 64 medals. Team GB were third on the overall table. "This is no time to pull the plug on winners – the heroes who will inspire a generation again in four years' time," Cameron wrote in an article published in the Sunday Times newspaper. "So while most public spending programmes are set in concrete for the years ahead, I can confirm we will continue to fully fund elite sports ahead of the Rio Games in 2016, with £120 million pounds a year."
Cameron said the Games must "open the ambitions of the next generation" and the change had to start with competitive sport in schools. The government said in a separate statement that, in the volunteering spirit of the Games, funded British athletes would be asked to offer up to five days a year of their time, for free, to inspire a generation through school sport. "I am old enough to remember a time when things were run on a shoestring budget before National Lottery and Government investment transformed British Olympic sport," said Chris Hoy, Britain's most decorated Olympian with six golds and seven career medals in cycling. "Having these guarantees for the future will be a huge boost for all the athletes aiming to win medals at Rio 2016 and proves we are serious about building a strong legacy from London 2012."
overall in May’s Giro d’Italia. The Olympic road race silver medallist will provide key support to Froome in the mountains along with Colombian compatriot Sergio Henao, who has wrapped up podium positions in his last two races (the Vuelta a Burgos and Tour de Pologne) and also donned the Giro’s white jersey in a remarkable first season in the pro ranks. Australia’s Richie Porte – the reigning Volta ao Algarve champion who also played an integral part in Team Sky’s historic Tour de France victory and preceding campaign – will be another invaluable asset to Froome in the mountains, along with Spaniard Xabier Zandio,
who brings great experience to his home Grand Tour. Fellow Spaniard Juan Antonio Flecha – riding his 17th Grand Tour - has all the qualities required of a road captain, with British national champion Ian Stannard and America’s Danny Pate possessing the horsepower to help the team on both the flats and climbs. Brit Ben Swift is the team’s designated sprinter and heads into the race in fine form having taken a brace of victories at the recent Tour de Pologne. Report & photo courtesy of www.teamsky.com
IOC withhold South Korean's medal over protest sign The IOC will not give a medal to the South Korea footballer who was photographed holding a sign with a political message about a territorial dispute with Japan following their bronze play-off. Midfielder Park Jong-woo was pictured at the end of the game holding up a sign which read "Dokdo is our territory" following his team's 2-0 victory over Asian rivals Japan. The 23-year-old was due to have picked up a bronze medal during a ceremony at Wembley but was told not to attend, and he will not be given his medal until the outcome of a FIFA disciplinary case is known. IOC president Jacques Rogge confirmed that he will not be given his prize until
FIFA decide on possible sanctions. "We will take a decision of what will happen with the medal later," Rogge said. The incident risked inflaming an already tense political situation between the two countries over the islands which are known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea, and which lie equidistant from the two nations.

'Voice of darts' Sid Waddell dies Popular darts commentator Sid Waddell has died after a battle with bowel cancer at the age of 72. A statement from his manager Dick Allix read: "With great sadness, we announce that following a long illness, broadcaster and author Sid Waddell died peacefully with all his family around him late last night, Saturday August 11th, 2012." Waddell announced that he was fighting bowel cancer in September last year, and took an indefinite break from his commentary duties. The 72-year-old Newcastle-born broadcaster had built a cult following for his exuberant commentaries on darts, working on the Sky Sports' coverage of PDC events since 1994.
Some of Waddell's unusual turns of phrases and references have become famous. He once said of multiple world-champion Eric Bristow that, "When Alexander of Macedonia was 33, he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer ... Bristow's only 27." And of Phil Taylor, recognised by many as darts' greatest player, Waddell once said, "William Tell could take an apple off your head, Taylor could take out a processed pea." priceless!

Disgraced Peterson is allowed to keep IBF belt
Lamont Peterson is being allowed to keep his tainted IBF version of the world lightwelterweight title he won while on steroids for his fight against Amir Khan. That disgraceful decision not only draws another red herring across Khan’s career path but sets a terrible example to young boxers and thereby heightens the risk of fighters being badly hurt by an artificially strengthened opponent.Peterson tested positive for drugs prior to a scheduled return fight with Khan, which was promptly cancelled.
Rory McIlroy wins second major Contending in a major for the first time since winning the U.S. Open by eight strokes, McIlroy overpowered the sunbaked and windless Kiawah course with countless drives of more than 350 yards and rolled it to a tournament-record eight-shot victory in the PGA Championship, the year's last major. McIlroy also ended the streak of 16 consecutive majors with different winners, and he became the first 54-hole leader to win a major this year, after the fades by Peter Hanson at the Masters, Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk at the U.S. Open and Adam Scott at the British Open. Finishing at 13-underpar 275 on a course America’s Golf Digest rated the toughest in the country and one where two tee box microphones were gobbled up by alligators this week,
Tiger Woods had another major weekend to forget and finished in a tie for 11th.
McIlroy was eight in front of David Lynn and a group of four players, including defending champion Keegan Bradley, and Ian Poulter, by nine. It was also not lost on many that McIlroy wore a red shirt on Sunday, matching Woods's final round colour of choice. "If I was playing with him, I wouldn't wear it," he said. "I wasn't playing with him so I thought I would wear it. I might have to do

it from now on. No wonder he wins so much." "I was a little frustrated with how I was playing earlier in the year. And there were a few people pushing the panic button for no good reason," said McIlroy, who won the Honda Classic in March. "To be honest, I wanted to go out there and prove people wrong. That's what I did. It took me all of four weeks to get my game back in shape and get out of my mini-slump, and this is the result."
McIlroy, at 23, became No. 1 in the official world golf rankings for the third time with the win, and is the third-youngest player to win two major championships since 1923 and four months younger than Tiger Woods was when he won his second title. McIlroy is also the youngest player to win the PGA Championship since it was converted to stroke play in 1958.
majors. Starting with a three-shot cushion, McIlroy fought back Ian Poulter's front-nine charge, (Poulter was making a run with birdies on his first five holes but after twice coming within two shots of McIlroy, Poulter couldn't sustain his march), with three birdies of his own and steadily built up cushions of four, five, six, seven and eight shots. Fittingly, McIlroy capped his finalround, bogey-free 66 with a 25-footer for birdie, and then hugged his father, Gerry, on the 18th green.
McIlroy got it going early on Sunday morning. Forced to play 27 holes because of a suspension in play during the third round on Saturday due to storms, McIlroy polished off a third-round 67 with two birdies in his last four holes, and took the lead into the final round for the third time in his last eight

Spain’s track and field flops. Spanish athletics needs to take a long, hard look at itself after failing to win a single medal at the Olympic Games, secretary of state for sport Miguel Cardenal said on Monday. Cardenal said he was generally satisfied with Spain's tally of 17 medals in London – three gold, 10 silver and four bronze – which was one less than in Beijing four years ago. However, he said it was the second Games in a row in which the Iberian nation had flopped in athletics after they also left the Chinese capital in 2008 empty-handed. Spain have enjoyed spectacular success in high-profile sports such as soccer, tennis and motor racing in recent years but their performances at Olympic Games have disappointed.

Emotional wreck! Well they’re over, and already I am suffering hugely from post Olympic blues! Breakfast time will never seem the same again without Bill and Hazel giving me the latest Team GB medal news, with the magnificent backdrop of the Olympic Park, beautifully sunlit through those huge glass panels. I would have loved to have been there to witness at first hand the atmosphere that the fans and commentators generated for all of the world’s athletes, yes the biggest cheers were reserved for the British athletes, but I don’t ever recall seeing so many smiling sportsmen and women from all countries as they were introduced to the crowds, and I think that was the defining point, pride, pride in the British people`s heartwarming acceptance of all the athletes.
Sporting SPOTLIGHT
Britain was intense, and as a nation that doesn’t like critisicm how were the organisers going to give the world a games that, heaven forbid wouldn’t embarrass us all? After that cringing preview at the Beijing games I can admit that I was one of the doubters. How wrong was I. From start to finish I have been in awe of the immense job done by LOCOG in getting the job done. The opening and closing ceremonies were a triumph, a knighthood for Danny Boyle must be in the offing! The end of games party was just what was needed and I am so glad that Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Cliff Richard decided to give their tonsils a rest. Elbow were just outstanding and their anthems lifted my mood to just above seriously depressed, yes I still wept uncontrollably and probably will when I watch tomorrow’s BBC breakfast. Soggy toast!! But hey it’s official, it’s ok to be British, and celebrate our Britishness. By Mike Kerrigan
Ian Poulter hopeful of Ryder Cup spot Ian Poulter believes his performance at the US PGA Championship where he tied for third place – was vital for his chances of making Europe's Ryder Cup squad. "This is the last tournament I was going to play for Ryder Cup qualification and I had to play well," says Poulter. "now I'm just inside the points. I don't know how that's going to play out obviously with Gleneagles, but hopefully that's good enough to get me an automatic spot."
