Grateful thanks to the firefighters The News pays tribute to BRICA whose members fought the blaze in their planes and helicopters ............................... P13 LOCAL NEWS - “ECOLOGICAL DEVASTATION”

Worst fire in decades finally extinguished The regional firefighting force Infoca declared the four-and-ahalf day blazes which had sown panic in the municipalities of Ojén, Mijas, Marbella, Alhaurín El Grande, Coín and Monda to have been extinguished by 8 am on Tuesday. The fires, which started last Thursday afternoon in Barranco Blanco in the Sierra Negra area of Coin, have destroyed a total of 8,225 hectares, of which 7,175 were woodland, in the six municipalities affected. A 54-year-old German was killed and five others suffered burns, two of them serious ones. Part of the AP7 highway and several roads connecting the coast with inland towns were temporarily cut. The town of Ojen was completely evacuated as were hundreds of people living close to the edges of the blazes, including 300 Britons. However, most had returned to their homes by Sunday evening, when the fires were largely under control, except for one between Ojen and Monda where the uneven terrain was a major obstacle for firefighters. According to official figures, around 200 houses suffered fire damage, and part of the World Biosphere Reserve in the Sierra de las Nieves was detroyed. The president of the Association of Sierra de las Nieves Municipalities said the area had never suffered “this level of ecological devastation”. Hundreds of pathways

Fourth report confirms bones are human A fourth forensic report ordered on the human remains thought to belong to the children of José Bretón , José and Ruth, who went missing on October 8th last year, has confirmed they are human.

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

As I was delivering The news last week I was coming down the hill from Mijas Pueblo to Fuengirola behind a black car when the window opened and the passenger threw out a still lit cigarette. True, they were on a road but it only takes one small spark to burn a whole area. On Thursday evening the helicopters were up water bombing quite close to us and it was only on Friday morning that we learned that the fire apparently started in Barranco Blanco (a very dry, campo area between Coin and Alhaurin) and had spread across to Monda, Guaro and all the way down to the coast. Thousands of acres of land has been destroyed, people had to be evacuated from their homes, some of which went up in flames, so what I’d like to know is this: have people who throw lighted fag ends out of their car windows got anything at all between their ears? Are are they totally thick, couldn’t give a damn about anybody else or doing it deliberately? At least two Spanish neighbours of mine have had fires in the last month or so and it just drives me up the wall. Say something to them and they look at you as if you are totally nuts but hear this: IT IS IllEGAl TO START A FIRE FOR AnY REASOn AT THIS TIME OF YEAR unlESS YOu HAVE A WRITTEn PERMIT FROM THE TOWn HAll, And IT IS IllEGAl TO CHuCK CIGARETTES OuT OF YOuR CAR WIndOW. Hundreds of firefighters, backed up by emergency military personnel and 31 planes and helicopters were involved in bringing the fires under control.

But the fact that the bodies were burned at 800ºC may make it impossible to recover any DNA samples. Once the judge receives the report the institute will try to determine whether DNA samples can be extracted for analysis. Bretón, who has been in jail since he reported the children missing, has denied murdering them.

The fires made headlines around the world. The Costa del Sol is one of Spain's most popular holiday destinations for people from as far away as China and as close as France or Portugal. Marbella itself is famous for its up-market hotels and villas and is a favourite haunt of wealthy foreigners. The whole area affected is also home to large British, German and Scandinavian communities. The embassies of the foreigners affected worked closely with the Spanish authorities and consular staff were deployed to assist

Two more recent reports said they were human. The judge investigating the case

ordered the National Toxicology Institute at Madrid’s Complutense University to conduct the fourth forensic study.

José Gallego, 72, was literally caught red-handed – on top of a ladder spraying red paint over plaques honouring the Franco regime at a church in Aspe, in Alicante province. He told journalists the police told him what he was doing was illegal “and I told them that it was illegal to leave them there because the Law of Historical Memory requires that Franco-era symbols must be taken down." Gallego now faces charges of vandalising historic and cultural heritage.

military governor of Toledo province during the Civil War. Gallego said he had asked the then mayor, Nieves Martínez of the Partido Popular (PP), to take down all the Franco-era symbols and she had promised to do so, but didn’t do anything. “The Socialist Party and the United Left who are now in power haven’t done anything either, “ Gallego said, “so I got tired of waiting.” Gallego faces between one and three years in jail and will have to pay for the damage caused but he has no regrets. His family were not persecuted during the Franco era but he was arrested on several occasions for taking part in marches against the regime.

Illegal migrants evicted from islet In a joint operation with the Moroccan police, the Guardia Civil began to evict dozens of illegal African migrants from the Isla de Tierra, a Spanish islet which lies within swimming distance of Morocco. The operation began under cover of darkness at 1 am on Tuesday morning, when several Guardia Civil launches took their human cargo to the nearest Moroccan beach, where soldiers, police and gendarmes awaited them. A Guardia spokesman said: "Many of the immigrants did not want to go to Morocco, but we did not have to use force and they gave us no trouble.” A total of 87 migrants had swum or waded to the uninhabited rocky island by Sunday, while another group tried to cross a fence separating Morocco from the Spanish enclave of Melilla. Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo told reporters earlier this

Government to create 'bad bank' Economy minister Luis de Guindos has announced the creation of a "bad bank" into which all the toxic property assets of the debt-laden banking sector can be offloaded. He said the Bank of Spain will assess the value of the assets being transferred into the "banco malo", which could last 10 to 15 years, and the banks will receive cash, debt or shares in return. On Sunday, the prosecution announced the murder charges against 270 striking miners would be suspended until the outcome of a judge-led inquiry into the events of August 16th at the Lonminowned Marikana platinum mine. The charges, levelled under a controversial apartheid-era law accusing the miners of provoking police to open fire, were suspended after widespread condemnation. Tigers opt for the night shift Tigers in Nepal seem to be taking night shifts in order to avoid their human neighbours, according to a study of the big cats living in Chitwan National Park by an international research team. Tigers generally move around at all times of the day and night, to monitor territory, mate and hunt, but the tigers in the park– where they walk the same paths as humans – showed a nocturnal shift in activity. The results challenge the conventional wisdom that

tigers need lots of peoplefree space. This can lead to people being relocated, or their access to resources being compromised to make way for tigers. The researchers said Chitwan’s 121 tigers appeared to have found a middle ground where it could be possible to protect the species at high densities and give people access to forest goods that they need to live: “If that's the case, then this can happen in other places, and the future of tigers is

much brighter than it would be otherwise." People live on the park's borders, but rely on the forests for wood and grasses, venturing in on roads and footpaths. Since the start of the 20th century, the world's population of wild tigers has dropped by 97% to approximately 3,000. The world's remaining tigers are being pushed into small spaces, and being able to share that space with humans is a critical survival skill.

Now will he tell? Whales Winnie Johnson, the mother of Moors murder victim Keith Bennett, was buried last Thursday following a moving funeral service. After a lifetime of campaigning, the 78-year-old died without fulfilling her cherished wish to find her son's makeshift grave on Saddleworth Moor and give him a proper Christian burial. Ian Brady and Myra Hindley abducted and murdered the 12-yearold in 1964 – the only one of the five young victims whose body has never been found. At the service at St Chrysostom's Church, in Victoria Park, Manchester, where Mrs. Johnson, a widow, was a regular parishioner and Keith attended Sunday school, the names of her son's killers were never uttered once. A former cleaner and worker in hospital kitchens, Winnie was diagnosed with the cancer that was to finally take her life on August 18th. Canon Ian Gomersall, rector of St Chrysostom's, told

mourners she lived all her life in Manchester, where her son was abducted. Canon Gomersall said Mrs Johnson had shown "that we, everyday people, can have courage, strength, hope and determination, whatever assails us. And while she was a woman of sorrow, she was also someone who even in the midst of her grief, could find hope and joy, and showed that love, faith, hope and courage would prevail over darkness.” Elizabeth Bond, a family friend, told mourners: "I have been in all sorts of places with Winnie while she played her public role and she never stood on ceremony for anyone. She stood fast against all that life could throw at her and kept a sense of humour along the way. She lived by her values – to do what we believe is right even in the hardest time; to not let ourselves be beaten and always call it how it is."

More than a dozen whales have died after becoming stranded off the coast at Pittenweem near St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland at about 7am on Sunday. Only 10 of the animals are still alive. A pod of 26 pilot whales got trapped with another 24 being seen off the coast. At high tide, ten of the whales were floated out to sea but 16, including four calves have died. It is believed that the 20 foot long animals became stranded after following one of their number that was sick on to the shore. Ali Jack, the Scottish coordinator of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue said: “the surviving whales may still die from stress or become stranded again. I would say that their chances are 50-50, it is up to the animals now. People here certainly couldn’t have done more – they were magnificent.”

Holiday tragedy George Selby and his 7-yearold son Louis have died after Louis, who was apparently standing on a stairway cut into some rocks posing for a family photo, was washed out to sea by a large wave at Cala Antena de Mallorca in the south east of the island at around 11am Saturday. George Selby drowned after trying to save his son. His mother described George as a true hero who was passionate about his wife Abigail and their three sons. The tragedy was witnessed by the boy’s horrified mother and two sisters. The mother ran screaming for help and lifeguards from a nearby hotel tried to save them. Witnesses said they saw George shouting for help and waving his arms in the sea. A red flag was flying on the beach to warn people not to enter the sea.

Killer driver gets 4 years Gordon Dyche, 24, already had previous convictions for driving offences – including driving while disqualified and without insurance – had another conviction for theft and a suspended sentence for handling stolen goods. In April 2011 while trying to overtake two cars he clipped Denise Griffith’s car sending her off the road and into Llyn Clywedog, near Llanidloes in Wales. Mrs Griffith’s lost her husband Emyr, aged 66, two foster sons, Liam Govier and Peter Briscome both aged 14 who had autism, and her mother, Phyllis Hooper, 84, in the crash. Mrs Griffiths explained to the court that they had been on holiday and were returning from a day trip when her Peugeot 807 People Carrier, travelling at around 40mph was shunted from behind. She said: "The next thing I knew we were going anticlockwise," she told the court. "I saw the rocks, and sky and rocks again, and the water just hit my face. I couldn't undo my seat belt

at first. I sat in the seat thinking 'how long have I got to live'." Mrs Griffith and the family dog, Milly, eventually escaped from the car but she said she knew her family "had not made it". She added: “I know my life has been ruined. It's the most lonely, lonely place to be.” Reacting to Dyche's convictcion, she said: "This has been the worst time of my life, and while my faith has helped me over the past year and a half, no words can express how much I miss my family and how much my life has changed since that day in April 2011. Whatever the outcome from today would have been, it would not have changed anything. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the emergency service personnel who helped that day, Also my family and friends. Also Mrs Rowlands who was kind enough to look after my dog Milly. I've not been able to thank her myself.” The birth mother of Liam Govier welcomed Dyche's sentence. Alison Govier, 38, said she was

"devastated" by her son's death, calling him "a lovely bubbly boy, a lovely smiley little chap". The court heard that shortly after the incident, Dyche, a married father, told a paramedic: "I shouldn't have done it. I was late for work. It's my fault." He also told a police officer: "It's my fault." Dyche was jailed for four years.

Junta asks for bailout ‘Merry men’ arrested The Junta de Andalucia has asked the central government to throw it a financial lifeline of €1 billion, to be granted immediately. Valencia, Murcia and Catalonia have requested bailouts in recent weeks from an €18 billion public fund set up by Madrid to aid its 17 autonomous regions, which are in deep

debt. The conditions which Madrid will impose on loans from the fund have not yet been announced. Mario Jimenez, the spokesman for the Socialist Party (PSOE) in Andalusia's left-wing coalition government, warned against trying to impose a "corralito", referring to capital

controls imposed by the Argentine government a decade ago, when it froze bank accounts in order to prevent bank runs. He said the Junta is exploring "various and diverse" mechanisms that would guarantee liquidity in the community, including central government aid or going to the financial markets.

‘Large scale’ food bank proposed The Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) has proposed the creation of a large-scale food bank controlled by the Junta, with “allies” in the food distribution chain such as supermarkets as well individuals who want to make their own donations.

IU spokesman for Andalucia, José Antonio Castro, said there is “enough housing and food in the region to ensure that everyone has a roof over his/her head and does not go hungry”.

The National Police arrested 12 members of Andalucian Workers Syndicate (SAT) on Tuesday after they occupied a bank in Malaga’s central square, Alameda. The march on Malaga forms part of ‘Robin Hood’ mayor Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo’s threeweek march across Andalucia to draw attention to the human face of Spain's economic mess and to persuade other local leaders to refuse to comply with government reforms. He is telling the region’s mayors to skip debt payments, stop layoffs, cease home evictions and ignore central government demands for budget cuts. Gordillo made the world’s headlines when he and dozens of SAT members raided supermarkets to give several shopping cartloads

of food to the most needy. Gordillo was not among those arrested in Malaga, having accompanied the march only as far as Antequera.

ERE scandal cost Junta €17 million The ongoing investigation into the so-called ERE scandal has revealed that some €17 million were fraudulently paid out to companies and individuals. ERE stands for public funds meant to be used to pay early retirement compensation at companies implementing labour adjustment plans involving many layoffs. Since 2001, the regional government has paid out €647 million to struggling firms. More than 5,500 employees have benefited from these subsidies, but the investigation has revealed 196 beneficiaries who were not eligible for them, with another 45 still under investigation – including nine members of the Socialist Party, which has governed the region since 1980. Some individuals applied fraudulently, pretending to work at companies that were receiving the funds, while others were granted the money through “administrative mistakes”. If the fraud had not been

One way of working the land The collapse of the construction industry left many former landworkers and owners high and dry. They had abandoned the land in droves to earn better money with bricks and mortar and now a lot of them are on the dole. However, some of the owners who left their plots untended for years are now letting them out as allotments. Such is the case of Manolo Carrillo, whose father abandoned his finca after getting a mere €45 for 1,500 kilos of squash. Meanwhile, Manolo had gone to work in the building industry. Two years ago, rather than work the finca himself, he divided it into 80 50-m2 plots and has been renting them out for €20 a month. The rent includes advice, drip irrigation and a parking space. The only thing he asks of his tenants is that they really want to cultivate their plots.

Memo from

Voice Madrid Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Rough ride ahead

Something's got to give

I

S

said to a friend the other day that I had no idea what I was going to write about this week, adding – jokingly – that perhaps I should dig up one of my old anti-Zapatero columns and substitute his name with Rajoy’s. But that would be very unfair. These two men are like chalk and cheese, oil and water, complete opposites – and now one of them has the very unpleasant task of cleaning up the mess left behind by the other.

I

don’t know if Rajoy will be able to pull it off, but he’s already passed more economic reforms since he was elected last November than Zapatero did in his seven and a half years in office.

T

he seven fat years are over. We now have to cope with the hopefully fewer lean years – mainly because Zapatero squandered the solid economy he inherited from José María Aznar. His critics have always claimed he was given a one-hour lesson on economics after he won the March 2004 election and – if true – he had a lousy teacher. He ignored the economy because he’s an ideologist. These people always put their ideology above pragmatism.

Z

apatero dreamed of disbanding the Basque terrorist group ETA, which declared a “definitive end to violence” just over a year ago. The Socialists are now claiming this as one of their great achievements. I think it would be nearer the truth to say that the more politically savvy members of the group realised that the best way of achieving their aim of independence from Spain is via the political route. The openly pro-ETA grouping in the Basque country – Bildu – which is currently working towards that end, is tipped to come in second in the regional election on October 3rd.

T

he Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) – which governed the region for nearly 30 years until the Socialists took over after the last regional election by allying themselves with the Partido Popular – are tipped to win the most seats again this time around, but to form a government they will have to ally themselves with Bildu. So I’m afraid the non-nationalist Basques are in for a very rough ride in the not-too-distant future.

W

e’re all in for a pretty rough ride. IVA (VAT) has gone up by 3 per cent on most of the things we buy – one newspaper has estimated this means that we’ll be spending some €50 more a month now, which is tough on the jobless and lower paid. However, I think the most dramatic aspects of Rajoy’s economic reforms will be felt in the public worker sector. Here in Spain, the vast majority of people want nothing more than a job in the public sector because it is a job for life. This is nothing new. For centuries, Spaniards have always tried to live comfortably while doing as little as possible – which has meant feeding at the public trough. I think Rajoy’s economic reforms will start putting an end to that.

T

he regional governments and local councils – which were used to spending money as if there were no tomorrow – are wallowing around in this new reality of empty coffers and no hand-outs for friends and sympathisers. The central government has made it quite clear that the regions are going to have to stick to a budget and I dare bet that by the end of Rajoy’s first term, the regional governments will find themselves shorn of many powers. Their opulent lifestyle has already gone out of the window, which will make them ju st that little bit more amenable to handing the mess back to Madrid.

M

eanwhile, the far Left has already declared its intention of making life as difficult as possible for the government – strikes and daily protests are going to be standard fare from now on. Perhaps they should look at what happened in the UK in the 1970s when it seemed the unions were indestructible. Margaret Thatcher only got the better of them because most people were fed up with their shenanigans. I suspect something similar will happen here.

R

ajoy said in an interview with the ABC newspaper on Sunday that if he sticks to his programme he’s confident he’ll be re-elected in November 2015. Aznar inherited a similar situation from the Socialists in 1996 and it took him about three austere years to put right Socialist economic wrongs. He did what he had to do and it looks as if Rajoy is determined to do the same.

ummer vacation is over and so is the so-called silly season, when the news media in Spain have to scurry around to look for any type of bizarre story to fill their pages and broadcast air time. After several weeks of “seeing the world” – okay, just the US and Prague – I return to my regular duties at El País and The News with all normalcy for the moment. Nothing has changed during this short break: Mariano Rajoy’s Partido Popular government still insists that it won’t ask Brussels for a bailout until it learns the conditions to the financial aid package beforehand, and those stipulations still haven’t been worked out as we go to print. This is the same message we have been hearing since early July. Many in the PP are beginning to believe that it is only a matter of time before Madrid asks for a second humiliating handout (the first, of course, being the bank recapitalisation plan in June, and that too hasn’t been pushed forward). Over at the European Union, German Chancellor Angela Merkel also remains firm; she hasn’t budged from her original position and refuses to allow the European Central Bank (ECB) president Mario Draghi to buy up bonds in indebted countries such as Spain, Italy and Greece to help calm the markets. Again, she continues to insist on harsh austerity without any formulas to stimulate growth. Draghi meanwhile has told the European Parliament that the ECB will not move a finger until countries like Spain and Italy formally ask for a bond-buying plan but that would mean harsher belttightening conditions for both Spaniards and Italians.

R

ajoy plans on meeting with Merkel on Thursday this week, so we may get some sort of inkling as to where this is all going to take us in the months ahead. The prime minister appears confident that he can hammer out an agreement that would allow Spain to get some quick cash without having to suffer the severe measures that Brussels imposed on Portugal and Greece. Fat chance! Judging by the stubbornness of our European leaders, it doesn’t seem likely they will cave-in on this matter. If Rajoy wants cash, he will have to follow the lessons dictated to him by Brussels. There is no way that the EU is going to commit the same error and hand bundles of euros to nations that in the past went on crazy, worthless spending sprees with little or no accountability.

O

ver at the Socialist camp, nothing seems to have changed either. The opposition continues to insist that Rajoy must take back his austerity package or risk social implosion – the same broken record that has been playing since May. Yet, the Socialists have not offered any type of concrete formulas that would in fact help the Spanish economy while at the same time appease Brussels. In other words, no one on either side has any answers. And then we have the unions with their strike rhetoric and threats to tighten the screws on this PP government until Rajoy changes his policies. How many times have we have heard this message?

Mariano Rajoy

S

omething has got to give and it is only a matter of time before something does give. As one Spanish business owner told me a few days ago, Spaniards have been accustomed too long to sit aside and allow the government to do whatever it wants to do without taking to the streets in mass protests. This, of course, being said while she complained how the hike in VAT will mean losses for her business, including losing customers at the cafe she runs, while her electricity and gas bills will go up.

T

his government has no solutions to help Spaniards feel that this mess will come to an end. It dictates policy on improvisation and hopes that all will work well. And then Rajoy tells ABC newspaper this weekend that if he follows through with his commitments he will surely be reelected to a second term – a ridiculous notion to be talking about the next elections when he is barely nine months into his first term and with no positive action taken on his part.

Y

es, the silly season has ended and the kooky autumn period is just beginning.

Unsung Heroes of the smoke-filled skies The worst forest fire Malaga has experienced in over twenty years ignited last Thursday evening. The last fire on this scale was in 1991/2 in the Sierra de las Nieves, although one of the worst Andalucia has seen was the 2005 blaze in Huelva. BRICA (Brigada de Refuezo de Incendios forestales de Centro Andalucia) received the call about Thursday’s fire at 19.00 hrs and within 10 minutes the brigade was ready and up in the air where they remained battling the fire until Sunday. Although no member of the brigade is allowed to work over 10hrs, between 18 and 20 flight missions were going out every two hours to fight the blaze. On Monday morning I had the privilege of visiting the BRICA base on the outskirts of Cartama where they were busy clearing up after the long and chaotic weekend. I say chaotic because the 1 km runway had to accommodate the intermittent take off of four Canadair Bombers, four Camoff helicopters (giant helicopters) 12 Bel 402’s and six air tractors. Say what you will about the Spanish, but there is certainly no ‘manana attitude’ when it comes to firefighting. I spoke to Francisco Javier, the base operations technician who explained to me that the base stocks gallons of fire retardant that is mixed with water and carried by the planes. This means that from landing, filling up with water and taking off again, the aircraft is back in the sky in five minutes. Depending on the size of the plane, they can carry

between 2,500 to 3,000 litres.

planes and helicopters go where.

The helicopters only take 15 seconds to fill up the ‘Bambi bucket’ which can hold up to 1,250 litres.

Helicopter pilot, Juan Carlos Guitierrez has been flying helicopters since 1980 and has worked as a firefighting pilot for eight years. To qualify, he told me you must pass two courses; firstly, how to fly through and around fire, and secondly, how to control and release the Bambi bucket which entails judging distances and taking the wind control into consideration. Once qualified, theory and practical exams must be retaken and passed every year to ensure the pilots are tip top.

BRICA has three bases in Andalucia – in Malaga, Granada and Seville, and although two large bomber planes are housed at Malaga airport, the coordination planes are based in Granada and Seville. When these kind of fires occur, all the planes and helicopters are coordinated by one small plane which flies around the perimeter organizing and directing as to which

Each brigade consists of 12 men: 10 firefighters, a pilot and a mechanic, all of whom can fit into the Bel 402 helicopter along with their firefighting equipment and Bambi bucket! If you think these guys hang around playing cards and shooting pool when there are no fires, you would be very much mistaken. Not only are they on call for fires in and around Malaga, they cover the whole province of Andalucia. During the winter when fires are less frequent they clear the forest areas, removing the sort of kindling material that would be likely to burn fiercely if ignited. In the summer the brigade are, of course, busy putting the fires out.

operations technician Francisco (below right), I took the opportunity to ask whether it was actually possible for a fire plane to scoop up a swimmer or scuba diver accidently and drop him onto a fire, as the urban legend would have us believe. He laughed and told me it would be virtually impossible to do that adding that they prefer not to use sea water anyway. I saw the Bambi bucket up close and personal and could not image it holding a person, so that myth has been well and truly busted.

So, let me take a moment to thank the brave BRICA brigade who risk their lives on a regular basis to keep our countryside, wildlife and ourselves, safe. text by A. Tyler

The Fireman´s Prayer: “When I am called to duty God, wherever flames may rage, give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age. Help me embrace a little child, before it is too late, or save an older person from the horror of that fate. Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout, and quickly and efficiently put the fire out. I want to fill my calling, to give the best in me, to guard my every neighbour and protect his property. If, according to my fate, I am to lose my life, please bless with your protecting hand, my children and my wife.”

Community News Now the looters move in You would think after last weekend with all the loss of property, personal injuries and animals that lost their lives that the whole of the community would be pulling together to help those affected. And to a very great extent, that is exactly what is happening. However, there are reports coming in from reliable sources that some people who were evacuated from their homes while the

wonderful people who control the planes and helicopters that drop water and fire retardant managed to save the buildings, now have the problem of looting.

If you are in an area and see anything like this going on, please call the police immediately and report what you have seen. Most of us carry mobile phones, many that have cameras so, if you can get a photo of these people, so please do that as well so they can be identified, prosecuted and possibly get people’s belongings back.

They are being told to reoccupy their properties, some of which have smoke damage, so that they are not cleaned out by these total scumbags who are now breaking in and stealing whatever they can get their grubby hands on.

Many people love their dogs and think that it’d be a great idea to breed from them – but have you really thought your reasons through? Here are a few more tips on the “why not’s” of breeding that we started last week.

Because we really love puppies! You'd better be sure you love puppies because until you have them, you can't imagine how much is fully involved, such as: The mess the litter makes. Can you put up with constantly cleaning and scrubbing up after the puppies, their whelping box, the yard, the kennel, or wherever you keep them? As soon as you feed them, they dump out of the other end. They then step in it, roll in it and drag it through whatever else is in the puppy box at the time. With a large litter of puppies, there is always something to be cleaned up. The responsibility you have with the litter is

not as small for you as it is with Fifi, when taking care of them until they are ready to go. Most of it is up to you and you are tied to the litter like any new mother, only you can't take the litter to the inlaws at the weekend, or anywhere else for the weekend, for that matter. You had better be content to spend all your time at home. There will be no more all day shopping sprees or any other activity that keeps you away from home for too long, as you have to be there to feed the pups 4-6 times a day. Now that you have some idea as to what's involved other than playing with cute cuddly puppies, and you are still determined to go ahead anyway, there's much more that should be considered so we’ll touch on those subjects next week.

“I was a damsel in distress and twice my airline became knights in shining armour and flew to my rescue.” So says granny of four Jean Leftwick of Alhaurin El Grande who is a regular passenger from Malaga to Liverpool’s John Lennon airport where she either meets or takes back her grandchildren during holiday times. “I can’t imagine what would have happened to us if the staff of Easyjet had not understood my problems and helped us out,” continues Jean, 68, whose family all live in the North West Cheshire area. On the first trip a couple

of weeks ago Jean collected together all the left over holiday spending money of Daniel, 10, and James, 6, who had spent their holiday with Jean and her friend Julia Holley, put it with her own in her handbag – and then left her handbag at home. “So there I was on the plane with NO MONEY with two young children,” Jean goes on. “But on the aircraft the staff could not have been more understanding and gave us drinks and crisps on the flight once they knew the situation.” The boys were convinced they would die of thirst and hunger before they got home! A tropical paradise in Torreblanca del Sol Markets Written by

Both Lebanese and Mediterranean cuisine of very high class can be found here and they offer a wide selection of the best

that Lebanon has to offer in the way of food and wine. What you first notice when you step through the gate is the absolute stillness and tranquility that prevails. This hotel and restaurant are located in a wonderful tropical garden amid palm trees, bougainvillea, oleander, and birdsong. There are terraces with sea views, winding paths through the garden and, of course, there is also a pool. When we arrived we were immediately greeted and shown to our reserved table. The restaurant is very popular both for its good food and its environment; it also caters for events like weddings and birthdays. So if it's a weekend you should book a table well in advance. Once seated, we were presented with an extensive menu and an

Main courses follow with everything from Grilled Irish fillet steak, Chicken breast stuffed with cheese and Serrano ham and Roast lamb marinated in fine herbs and served with a pear and mint sauce. For non-meat eaters you can choose from Hake with prawns in a white wine sauce, Grilled seafood kebab, Pasta with a tomato sauce, garlic and prawns or a simple but delicious Pasta with olive oil, garlic, chilli and parsley. Main courses range from €9.50 up to €22.50. For our meal we chose the special menu for two to share – consisting of a selection of hot and cold starters, a selection of charcoal grilled meats for the main course and fresh fruits to finish with. As an accompaniment we chose a bottle of fine Lebanese wine (Ksara Le Prieuré 2009) and a sparkling healthy mineral water. The price for the special menu

was €28 per person, and the bottle of red wine €21. I can’t remember what water cost but it was the famous San Pellegrini. The starter plate consisted of Tabbouleh (a refreshing crushed wheat, parsley and mint salad) Mutabbal – that is a smoked aubergine dip, Hummus, the chick pea dip, and Warak Enab (stuffed vine leaves) plus two different types of Borak that are little pastry parcels stuffed with either spiced minced meat or cheese and spinach. The main course was a plate of a Kafta – a kind of kebab that is minced lamb with spices and onion pressed on to a skewer and grilled – and some very tender lamb and chicken pieces. The meats were

served with fluffy Basmati rice and a tomato dip. And, what we thought was very clever was that the meat was covered with pieces of pita bread to keep it all warm! The dessert was a huge platter full of fresh fruits – watermelon and other melon pieces, orange, prunes and dates. After all this, we were feeling so contented that we decided to forgo coffee and cake! It was our first time here for dinner, but definitely not the last. witchcraft, from bringing to bear a terrible curse on the small town in which the boy lives. After her death she pledged that her accusers would walk the earth as zombies. On each anniversary Norman’s uncle has prevented the curse from becoming a reality and now it is Norman’s turn. But his tormentor Alvin puts a spoke in the works and the curse is finally realised. So now Norman must become an unwilling hero, and helped by a small gang of other ghostbusters

including his friend Neil and Neil’s brother Mitch, he has to fight the zombie army that threatens to overwhelm the town. This beautifully animated movie comes from the makers of the Oscar-nominated Coraline and has been warmly reviewed. It’s spooky and scary and pays homage to the horror B movies of yesteryear which may be a bit too scary for very young children but jump-out-ofyour-skin fun for older children and adults.

Starring: Jason Statham, Chris Sarandon & James Hong

When ex-government agent Luke Wright (Jason Statham) exposes the Russian mafia for rigging an illegal fight, they seek revenge on his family and threaten to kill anyone close to him. Destitute and living alone on the streets of New York, Luke has given up hope....until a chance meeting with a young girl changes everything. Mei (Catherine Chan), who is a 10-year-old mathematical prodigy, is abducted by Triad gangsters wanting to use her unique ability to memorise a secret code. When the Russian mafia

and a group of corrupt cops also launch a plan to kidnap Mei, it's clear she holds the key to something deeply dangerous and these men will stop at nothing to get it. Over the course of one harrowing night Luke snaps back to life and tears through the city's underworld. This could quite possibly be Statham's best film yet. The producers have been a little more generous with the budget than the average Statham film and have had the good sense to cast a little Chinese girl in a central role. The casting of

newcomer Catherine Chen is a great idea and gives everyone a reason to actually care about someone in a film of largely unpleasant characters.

Expect the unexpected this week and your boat will not be rocked too much when an ‘x factor’ could come crashing into the equation. As soon as you think you have everything arranged there is likely to be something that is unaccounted for or a sudden change crops up at the last minute. Be wary of making promises that you may not be able to keep especially when it comes to those within your immediate environment such as neighbours or work colleagues. Watch your energy levels this week as you are unusually affected by emotional and family issues and atmospheres. You will want to spend more time in your home and will wish to make it comfortable and cosy. Your imagination is at an all time high and you will find inspiration for poetry, writing or re-decorating. For you it is all about creating a peaceful environment where you can relax unwind and feel content. You could feel enthusiastically driven by a cause that is personal to you, your will and determination are strong right now and if there is something that you emphatically believe in then there is no stopping you this week. Remember that you have needs within the whole process as it is easy to get caught up in moment and neglect your own health. You hold the key to unlocking a gateway that will pave the way for others, something is calling you Gemini are you going to respond? There could be an underlying weight that you are aware of and this responsibility sits at the base of everything that you do this week. Something or someone is dependent upon you at the moment and you need to take this into consideration without it weighing too heavy on your mind. If you are worrying about things then rest easy in the knowledge that there are helping hands that will soon be there to help carry the load. It is time to take the spotlight as all eyes are on you as you exude a magnanimous and dynamic energy. All that you do makes a loud noise and is heard for miles around; in fact you are the new talking point. No one can question that you show immense courage and boldness to get things moving, in fact there is no stopping you this week. Home and family are important to you and are the highlight of your focus; you want to feel the close connection of belonging as this is what gives you your solid footing and inner sense of security to face the world. A bond with a female family member or someone whom you consider to be family will increase in strength. This is a good point for planning and structuring for the forthcoming weeks ahead and laying down some ground rules for the future.

Walls and boundaries have started to break down and old structures have fallen away by the wayside to reveal a plateau whereby you can build your dreams anew. Hope is on the horizon and inspiration is likely to be drawn from the old traditional ways of doing things combined with a little modern September 23rd - creativity. You are ready to let go of something so that you can transform your October 22nd life and embrace the changes that are on their way.

Images and feelings of the past are still lingering and you dearly wish to lay them to rest. It all seems out of your hands though and you could be waiting on another before you can really move on. There is a lot of tension and frustration around at the moment and something could have your nerves on edge. You can only do what you can do and change what is within your power to change the rest you have to accept until things are ready to shift.

You are in your element this week literally, ready to pour water on smouldering and angry situations, tempering heaty or heavy discussions and providing an objective and yet mediatory role. You bring the balance to extremes and others will look to you to provide that sanctuary and safe space. Duty and responsibility play an important part of your planning for the upcoming days that follow as you will wish to also stand up for the underdog if you feel that someone is being trodden on.

Active pensioners Glass shape live longer alters drinking Being active and living a healthy lifestyle into your seventies can make a huge difference to your life expectancy, according to a Swedish study.

The shape of beer glasses affects the speed people drink, according to researchers at the University of Bristol. In their study, they filmed a group of 159 men and women drinking either soft drinks or beer.

Researchers at the Karolinska Institute analysed the lifestyles of 1,810 people over 75 and found that men with the healthiest lifestyles lived six years longer, and women had five extra years. Being sedentary, overweight, a smoker or heavy drinker is bad for health and shortens life expectancy but the researchers said they did not know how big the effect would be after 75, so they followed a group of people for 18 years. They found that smokers died a year earlier, but people who quit in middle age were almost as long-lived as those who had never smoked. Swimming, walking and gymnastics increased life expectancy by around two years.

speed

People with a rich social circle lived a year and a half longer than those without. Even after the age of 85, low risk lifestyles prolonged life by four years. The researchers said: "Our results suggest that encouraging favourable lifestyle behaviours even at advanced ages may enhance life expectancy." Life expectancy for men in

the UK is currently 78 for men and 82 for women. A spokesman for the charity Age UK, said there was "no doubt" that being active and having a healthy lifestyle would help people to live longer: "It's never too early and never too late to make those small changes that can make a big difference."

The glasses all contained around half a pint of liquid, but some of the glasses were straight while others were very curved. They found no difference in the drinking time for soft drinks – people drinking from both straight and curved glasses finished after around seven minutes. However, for the beer drinkers there was a large difference between the two groups. While it took around seven minutes for people drinking from a curved glass to polish off their half

pint, it took 11 minutes for those drinking from a straight glass. The researchers thought that curvy glasses made it harder to pace drinking because judging how much was in the glass became more difficult owing to its curved shape. The group of drinkers was shown a variety of pictures of partially-filled beer glasses and asked to say whether they were more or less than half full. The team said people were more likely to get the answer wrong when assessing the amount of liquid in curved glasses.

Coconut oil could combat tooth decay Researchers at the Athlone Institute of Technology Scientists in Ireland have found that coconut oil which had been treated with enzymes stopped the growth of Streptococcus bacteria – a major cause of

tooth decay, which affects 60% to 90% of children in industrialised countries.

when treated with enzymes, in a process similar to digestion.

The researchers tested the impact of coconut oil, vegetable oil and olive oil in their natural states and

The oils were then tested against Streptococcus bacteria which are common inhabitants of the mouth. Only the enzymemodified coconut oil showed an ability to inhibit the growth of most strains of the bacteria. It is thought that the breaking down of the fatty coconut oil by the enzymes turns it into acids which are active and effective against bacteria. Previous research found that enzyme-modified milk

could stop Streptococcus mutans from binding to tooth enamel. They said coconut oil could be an attractive alternative to chemical additives.

The researchers said people were not concerned about pacing themselves with soft drinks, which could explain why glass shape had no effect on them. They concluded that altering the glasses used in pubs could "nudge" people to drink more healthily by "giving control back". The shape of a glass has already been shown to affect how much alcohol people pour. A study in 2005 showed people were more likely to pour extra alcohol into short, wide glasses than tall, narrow ones.

Singer Max Bygraves, composer Hal David, and actor Michael Clarke Duncan all died in the last week

A bad week for the entertainment world … but what a great legacy of songs and films they leave behind for all of us. Michael Clarke Duncan was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of death row inmate John Coffey in the hugely succesful film ‘The Green Mile’. Six-foot-five Michael suffered a heart attack in July from which he never fully recovered and died in hospital in Los Angeles on Monday. In his time he had variously worked as a bouncer in his hometown of Chicago and even for a time as a male stripper. He also worked as a bodyguard for the likes of Will Smith, Jamie Foxx and LL Cool J. His first major role was as Bear in 'Armageddon' with Bruce

Willis in 1998. His career took off from there, landing parts in 'Sin City', 'Planet of the Apes', 'The Scorpion King', 'Kung Fu Panda' and 'Green Lantern'. He is survived by his fiancée Omarosa Manigault, who was with him in hospital shortly before he died aged just 54.

Max Bygraves best known catch-phrase was “I’m gonna tell you a story”. The comedian and singer died in his sleep at home on Hope Island, Queensland, Australia aged 89. He had been suffering from Alzheimers. Born in Rotherhithe, south-east London, in 1922 as Walter William Bygraves, he gained the nickname Max from his impersonations of comedian Max Miller while serving in the RAF. He moved to Australia in 2005 from his then home in Bournemouth, Dorset. Bygraves, whose career spanned five decades and made him a multi-

millionaire, also starred in radio and television shows, and films, including Charley Moon. He also bought the rights to a thenunknown musical – Oliver! – from its creator Lionel Bart, which then went on to make him huge amounts of money. He married Blossom Murray in 1942 and had three children.

Hal David, songwriter died at the age of 91 on Saturday in Los Angeles following complications from a stroke. Hal’s wife Eunice said he had suffered a major stroke in March and another last Tuesday. "Even at the end, Hal always had a song in his head," she said. Famous for his collaborations with Burt Bacharach on such songs as ‘Raindrops (keep falling on my head)’ that was used in the film Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid plus Dionne Warwick’s ‘Do You Know The Way To San José?’ and ‘Walk On By’, the pair had a string of top 40 hits and helped turn some

singers into superstars. His works were performed by artistes as diverse as Perry Como, Louis Armstrong, the Carpenters and Sandie Shaw. In 2011, David and Burt Bacharach were awarded the Gershwin Prize for popular song by the US Library of Congress, the first time a songwriting team has been given the honour.

Laughter - the best medicine. Katie and Jamie Crystal Clear Anne explains tie the knot Hello and welcome back. This week we are looking at healing and stress and I would like to thank you all for your feedback and to please feel free to ask questions or for advice on my columns.

Healing through Laughter Laughing for 20 minutes a day, even if the laughter is for no specific reason will increase the levels in your body of specific neurotransmitters known as endorphins. Endorphins are the body’s natural opiates and their presence in your body can reduce pain, and alleviate symptoms of bronchitis and asthma. Laughter is a natural healer for the body watching funny movies, comedy shows and sharing time with lighthearted friends or family will help you strengthen your immune system. Having a sense of humour is a vital psychological resource not just because laughter

releases positive chemicals into the body, because in order to find something funny we have to be able to see it from multiple perspectives. Humour is one of the most valuable resources in the effort to control stress. It’s helpful to find opportunities to laugh every single day. Remember, every time you laugh you stimulate the release of chemicals into the brain that enhance your wellbeing. Don’t be afraid to laugh long and hard producing good feelings in your body which disable the stress response in its tracks.

Smiling Smiling is infectious – you catch it like the ‘flu! When somebody smiled at me today I started smiling too. I passed around the corner and someone saw my grin and, when he smiled, I realised I had passed it onto him. I thought about that smile and then I realised its worth – a single smile just

like mine could travel round the earth. So if you feel a smile begin, don’t leave it undetected, let’s start an epidemic quick and get the world infected!

Exercise Exercise is important. I know a lot of people who are shy or thinking about exercising sends them into a panic attack. No, it’s not always necessary to visit the gym every other day. Walking for 15 minutes twice a day will get your heart pumping faster than usual and your lungs breathing more deeply. Exercise has been prescribed in clinical centres to help treat patients with nervous disorders and stress. Swimming and riding a bicycle can also work wonders for stress levels. Stress is one of the major problems in our society today causing massive health issues for example: heart attacks, strokes, digestive problems and ulcers. It’s important to

take care of yourself. The more you worry and stress the more you are sending out all the wrong signals and ordering more stress. Think positive, be positive, be kind to yourself and other around you. Focus on getting well, see it! Feel it! Believe it! Nothing ever stays the same. If you focus on negative you will receive more negative. So try to create more positive energy in your life. Remember to count your blessings and not your sorrows, for every problem has a solution and every crisis is a new beginning. Until next time. Anne.

Katie Melua tied the knot with former World Superbike champion James Toseland at the Nash Conservatory in the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, West London on Saturday. Among the 200 guests was Prince PieterChristiaan Michiel of the Netherlands, music producer William Orbitt and composer Mike Batt along with many of Toseland’s friends from the world of motorsports. Katie Melua wore an offwhite off the shoulder gown designed by Claire Pettibone. Melua was discovered when she was a 17-year-old student at the Brit school of

Performing Arts by Batt in 2002. Former pupils also include Adele, Jessie J and Amy Winehouse. The nine Million Bicycles singer has gone on to becoming one of the biggest selling British female artists of all time, performing for Nelson Mandela and dining at Buckingham Palace with the Queen. Jamie Toseland, 31, was forced to stop racing in September 2011 after suffering a wrist injury. The couple have been together since April 2011 after meeting at one of her concerts in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and announced their engagement at the beginning of this year.

Aneliese (Lisa)Townsend La Risa, Alhaurin de la Torre Morning! I´m not sure whether you are aware of this group or not, you´ll find them on Facebook as well as the new website which is being set up right now. They are SOS Volunteers Andalucia.

I spent all day on Saturday with the volunteers up at Barranco Blanco, taking them food and water, collecting further financial and physical donations from other volunteers, shopping for items the workers desperately needed to ensure the fires did not reignite and then did a four hour shift in the evening "on the front line" myself. When you see the utter devastation just the other side of "our" mountain you realise how incredibly lucky we were to be untouched. It so could have been different, just a change in the direction of wind and we would have been the ones with our houses burnt to the ground, our only possessions the clothes we were standing in, with injured pets (if we

I think you know a large group of people who I don´t have contact information for, who I think would want to help out with OUR disaster, if they are not already doing so. Over the course of the weekend, I have heard of hundreds of people who want to help but don´t know what to do. This is the group to join to ensure that everyone is given the correct information to be able to do as much or as little as they want.

John Chambers Over the past year three professional electronic technical guys who worked around the Estepona/Sabinillas/Coin areas appear to have left the Costa Del Sol, seemingly to return to Britain. Now there appears to be no one like them left; the firms that they worked for either have no equivalent staff still with them – or they have shut down as well. It is for sure that there are quite a lot of electronic technical firms shown in the Spanish Yellow Pages, but none that I have talked to have any English-speaking

Please can you pass on the information to everyone in this area so if anyone wants to help, they can. Some of the easier things we can do to make a big difference are detailed on the pages, for example, Iceland are collecting donations of clothes, non-perishable food, animal food or simply water. There are volunteers who will collect items inland and take them to Fuengirola for you to make it even easier if need be! Many thanks and sorry to pester you!

I am the first one to say that that kind of nationality discrimination, especially coming from expats living in Spain, is unforgivable and we must be very careful to avoid it. But, unfortunately, what I need is a technical guy who is able to sort out some work that already has been done horrendously by a Spanish electrician, who said that he was well able to do what we were looking for involving non-technical computer and router stuff. Sadly, however, his optimism was considerably greater than his actual understanding of what he was doing, and I am now left with an expensive internet that doesn't work. Is there no time-served Brit 'out there' with the genuine

Pamela Moore What a horrendous weekend we have all had with the fires, and I hope my favourite newspaper, The News, will cover it properly as everyone will be interested. There seems to be some rumours going around, none of them confirmed of course, as to what started the fire. I have heard that it was someone who didn’t extinguish his BBQ properly, someone set light to his land because the local town hall wouldn’t give

Did they or didn’t they? With the recent death of Neil Armstrong there has been a resurgence in interest about the Apollo Moon landings, and I can’t believe that some idiots are still saying that they don’t believe that the astronauts landed on the Moon!

T

here have been wild stories of flags on the Moon waving in the ‘breeze’, shadows at the wrong angles, lack of stars in the photographs and other throw away statements. But these people refuse to accept numerous indisputable facts about the Moon landings and they hang on to rumours and hearsay from conspiracy theorists.

I

skills I am probably looking for, but who doesn't have an obvious advertisement in place? Almost more to the point, is there anyone with genuine professional skills who is looking for a real bundle of work for a good business start? All the Estepona computer dealers tell me they get a lot of phone calls asking for the same kind of guy as I'm looking for. But they don't know of any tradesman or tradeswoman who is competent to help. It actually seems a business opportunity in a million for the right guys! I hear it's being said that computers might be here to stay!

Coin him permission to build and another that three men had been arrested for arson. Who knows what the truth is yet but what I would like to say is a huge “thank you” to all the firefighters, on the ground and airborne, and all the volunteers who turned out all over the area to help with everything. Editor says: See page 13 for a special report but I would also like to thank everybody who helped. Fire is a terrifying thing so well done to all of you.

have seen the footage of the flag ‘waving in the breeze’, it is not waving in a breeze, the astronaut is fastening it to the aluminium flagpole and he is twisting it as it slots in. The fact that there is no air on the Moon to slow it down means that the flag will continue to wave for an extra few seconds longer than it would on Earth. Anyone watching the footage can quite clearly see the movement as the astronaut handles the flag.

T

here were over half a million people involved in the Moon landings. Can you imagine the difficulty of trying to keep that many people plus their spouses, friends, children and grandchildren quiet for over 40 years?

N

umerous radio telescope receivers placed all around the world received the radio and television signals that were transmitted by the astronauts. The footage of Neil Armstrong actually first stepping onto the Moon was received by a radio telescope situated in Parkes, New South Wales, Australia. As the Earth revolved then the signal was passed to more and more independent radio telescopes spread across the globe. The Jodrell Bank radio telescope in Cheshire, England played a very important role in receiving the broadcasts. Conversations between Mission Control in Houston and the Apollo crews were also routed through these huge telescopes along with telemetry data received from the spacecraft themselves, and guess what? All of the telescopes were pointed directly at the Moon.

D

uring the six Apollo missions to the Moon’s surface, 2,415 samples weighing 382 kg (842 lb) were collected, the majority by Apollo 15, 16, and 17. Sceptics always seem to brush over answering the question; ‘where on Earth did all this Moon Rock come from?’ The Lunar samples have been studied right down to the smallest atomic level by scientists and geologists from around the world some of whom weren’t even born when the rock was collected and every single one of them will tell you that it all came from the Moon.

D

uring the Apollo 11 and Apollo 15 missions, two reflectors were left on the lunar surface pointed toward Earth. Scientists now fire very powerful laser beams at these reflectors and measure the time it takes for the light to return to Earth. They do this on average twice a week and the measurements are used to tell how far away the Moon is. They are so accurate that we now know that the Moon is moving away from the Earth at about 4cm a year.

D

uring the Apollo 15 mission in 1971, Commander Dave Scott performed an experiment directly in front of the TV cameras. He dropped a hammer and a feather both at the same time to demonstrate Galileo’s theory that all objects would drop at the same rate regardless of their mass in the absence of air resistance and hey presto! Both the hammer and feather hit the ground at the same time.

S

ceptics talk about there being no stars visible on any of the photographs; anyone with even a basic knowledge of photography will be able to tell them that to photograph stars be it on the Moon or on the Earth requires a long shutter exposure. The Hassleblad cameras used by the astronauts were designed and set to take correctly exposed photographs of the astronauts and surrounding scenery not long exposures of the stars.

T

here is now a satellite in orbit around the Moon taking photographs of the surface with the same resolution as those used in Google Earth. Every one of the Apollo landing sites has been photographed showing the Lunar Module, equipment, tracks made by the Lunar Rovers and even the astronauts’ footprints.

B

ut if you really want to know if the Apollo astronauts landed on the Moon then ask the Russians. I’m sure that the KGB would be delighted to tell you that they have found evidence that it was all a hoax.

Button hits out at Hamilton for telemetry tweet McLaren's Jenson Button has criticised team mate Lewis Hamilton for revealing confidential car data on Twitter before the Belgian Grand Prix in a gaffe that may have helped Formula One rivals." We work so hard to improve the car and keep things like that secret and private. I didn't want to see it on Twitter," said Button, whose relationship with Hamilton has hitherto been unusually harmonious for title rivals."I think it's done now. I don't think it's for me to be angry with Lewis. It's not a personal thing," he said.

Button survives mayhem at Spa Grand Prix Jenson Button coasted to his second victory of the season at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday with Formula One championship leader Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton forced out after a spectacular crash at the start. It was Button's first victory at Spa and No. 14 of his career. He led from start to finish, oblivious to the mayhem behind him. "This is such a special circuit, so to get a victory here from light to flag is very special," Button said. "It hasn't been an easy year for me. We're going to enjoy this for a little while longer before we head to Monza and hopefully do the same." Button triumphantly zigzagged across the track as he approached the finish line and then clapped his hands together in celebration. He then stood on his McLaren and leaned his head back as he clenched both fists. "The car felt very good to drive and I could control the degradation of the tyres. It's always easier to do that when you're leading," said Button, who climbed to sixth place overall. "It's a

massive long shot to win the title, but today proves that you can claw back 25 points very quickly. There's still 63 points to make up, but anything's possible." Defending champion Sebastian Vettel benefited from the chaos to finish second and trim Alonso's lead to 24 points – putting the two-time champion right back in contention. "I was reasonably confident because I know anything can happen here and you can overtake," Vettel said. Kimi Raikkonen was third, continuing the consistent form he's shown all season long with his third straight podium and sixth overall. "My car was not the nicest to drive the whole race," Raikkonen said. "I was fighting to get the best out of it and we managed to get some key points, so that was the main thing."

(about) Monza!" Alonso posted later on his Twitter page. Alonso, who started the race with a 40-point lead over Red Bull's Australian Mark Webber, had hoped for a record-equalling 24th successive points finish but that was shattered in a cloud of carbon-fibre after a matter of metres. His lead was cut to 24 points, with Vettel moving up to second overall. Webber dropped to third, 32 points adrift of Alonso.

The early wreck, which was triggered by Lotus driver Romain Grosjean, also took out Mexican driver Sergio Perez, and Grosjean himself. Grosjean had gone for a small gap

and clipped Hamilton's McLaren. That sent both cars spinning and led to Grosjean's Lotus flying dangerously over Fernando Alonso's Ferrari, which then took out Perez's

Sauber. All four drivers escaped unhurt, although Grosjean’s car narrowly missed the Spaniard's head. "I'm fine and 100 (percent) already thinking

Once all the dust had settled Romain Grosjean was given a one-race ban for causing the first-corner crash at the Belgian Grand Prix. The 26-year-old Frenchman, who has been involved in seven first-lap crashes in 12 races this season, was also fined 50,000 euros (£40,000).

All new Ford Focus in the Sweeney scene in the film. The cars will again recreate their duel at CarFest North at

Cholmondeley, Cheshire, this weekend after appearing at last month’s CarFest

South. Ford’s strong link with the 1970s Sweeney TV series saw Regan, Carter and their Flying Squad colleagues use a string of Ford Granadas, Consuls and Cortinas to make the streets of London a safer place.

Ford’s first global performance car takes centre stage this month with a starring role in new film blockbuster The Sweeney. Premiered last night (Tuesday) in London, Flying Squad detectives Jack Regan (Ray Winstone) and George Carter (Ben Drew aka Plan B) lead a cast of crime-busting officers as they pursue London’s criminals in black Ford Focus ST highperformance hatchbacks. On sale this month in five other colours including Tangerine Scream and Spirit Blue, the Ford Focus ST’s 2.0litre 250PS EcoBoost engine and explosive acceleration ensure the film’s criminals struggle to make a clean getaway. The Sweeney director and co-writer Nick Love, whose prior credits include The Football Factory and The Firm, said: “It was important for me to collaborate with Ford on The Sweeney as their legacy with the original TV show is so strong – they’re the perfect partner. I like the Ford Focus ST so much, I want one!” The Ford Focus ST goes head to head with a Jaguar XFR on a high-octane chase

London 2012 Paralympics Britain's David Weir sprinted to a sensational victory in the T54 5,000m to win his third Paralympic gold medal. The wheelchair race was a tactical affair until Weir produced his trademark burst of power to sprint away from his rivals over the final 100m. Weir finished in 11 minutes 07.65 seconds, ahead of Australia's Kurt Fearnley and France's Julien Casoli. "You dream about winning on home turf," said the 33-year-old. "I'm a

London lad, it's a dream come true." Weir, who will try to defend his 800m and 1500m Paralympic titles later in the week, is also set to race in the marathon. He won ParalympicsGB's only two athletics golds at the Beijing Games four years ago in those middle distance races and he picked up his third career title with a terrific sprint finish. "I was in great form coming in to this, all the other races this year were

David Weir gets the one he wanted

just preparation for this," he added. Oscar Pistorius says he wants tougher regulations on the length of running blades after suffering a shock loss in the final of the Paralympic T44 200m. The South African was beaten by Alan Oliveira but claimed the Brazilian's prosthetic legs are too long. "We are not running in a fair race here," Pistorius told Channel 4. "I don't know how you can come back, watching the replay, from eight metres behind on the 100 to win. It's absolutely ridiculous." Pistorius was overhauled in the final 20 metres as the 20-year-old Oliveira won in 21.45 seconds. "Not taking away from Alan's performance, but these guys are a lot taller and you can't compete," added Pistorius, who was second in 21.52. "I gave it my best. The guys are just running

ridiculous times and they're able to do so." Oliveira said the comments of his "idol" were hard to take."He is not a bad loser, he is a great athlete. I am just sad he said my blades were too big. For me, he is a really great idol and to hear that from a great idol is difficult."

Apology from Pistorius Oscar Pistorius has since apologised for the timing of his comments following his loss in the final of the Paralympic T44 200m. The South African criticised the International Paralympic Committee, saying gold medallist Alan Oliveira's artificial legs were too long. Pistorius said he still felt that the matter needed to be addressed. But he added: "I want to apologise for the timing of my comments but I do believe that there is an issue here."

Ian Bell plays a reverse sweep shot during his innings of 88

Early lead in series as Bell shows class Ian Bell struck a classy 88 as England chased down a modest target of 221 to beat South Africa by six wickets and take a 2-1 lead in the one-day series. Bell added 141 with Jonathan Trott, who played through a suspected hand fracture to make 47, before Eoin Morgan and Craig Kieswetter saw England home. Spinner James Tredwell had set England on the victory trail by having three South Africa batsmen stumped.

Ravi Bopara (2-34) also impressed as the tourists were restricted to 220-8. England, who cemented their position at the top of the ICC one-day rankings until the New Year, will win the series if they avoid defeat in the fifth and final match at Trent Bridge on Wednesday. The contest followed a similar pattern to Friday's at The Oval as South Africa wasted a bright start with the bat and had to settle for a total that was always likely to prove below par.

Challenge Cup 2012 The Challenge Cup between Benalmadena Bowls Club and Lauro Golf Bowls Club has now come to an end. Four matches were played, two at each club. As usual the games were very close. But in the end Lauro came out on top winning the Challenge Cup for the second year running. Mike Stapleton,

Benalmadena presented the cup to Captain Terry Morgan. After the final game which was played at Lauro everyone sat down for a well earned drink and pizzas were then given to players. All in all it was a lovely end to a very succesful four weeks of bowling. by Amber Dineen

Ronaldo wants a pay hike

Ronaldo refused to celebrate his goals for Real Madrid on Sunday and revealed after the game that he was feeling sad for professional reasons, rather than personal ones. 'The people here know why,' he added. Three clubs were said to be tabling offers of around the £100 million mark. Man City, Paris St Germain, and possibly Chelsea, "City though denied they are ready to move for Ronaldo, suggesting his agent Jorge Mendes is using the speculation to get his client a new deal in Madrid."As long as he doesn’t go back to Utd.

At the 18th, Oosthuizen missed a 13-foot birdie putt that would have forced a playoff. McIlroy, whose own birdie attempt at 18 stopped on the lip, posted a four-under-par 67 for a 20-under 264 to become the second three-time winner on the tour this year. The first was Tiger

Woods, who finished alone in third, two strokes back, after posting a 66 to match his second-best final round of 2012. “It’s nice to get the third win this year and tie Tiger,” said McIlroy, who held off Woods to win the Honda Classic and secured his second major title, at the P.G.A. learned how to handle winning big events and carrying myself forward.” With at least seven competitors vying for the last four United States Ryder Cup spots, Dustin Johnson and Brandt Snedeker made the strongest closing finishes. Johnson carded a 70 to tie for fourth with Phil Mickelson (66) at 14-under 270. Snedeker, who’s No. 1 on the tour in putting, posted a 67 to finish sixth. “Davis has such a tough job on his hands,” said McIlroy, the world’s No. 1 player, from Northern Ireland, who will anchor the European team during

The South African-born Oosthuizen, who closed with a 71, isn’t eligible for the competition, which freed him to focus on his positioning in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Ranked 34th at the start of the postseason, Oosthuizen has vaulted to No. 5 on the strength of his tie for fifth at the Barclays and his runner-up showing here.

Murray reaches quarter finals

Lloris unhappy France manager Didier Deschamps has indicated that goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is unhappy with comments made by new club boss Andre Villas-Boas, just four days after his move to White Hart Lane. Lloris left Lyon for Tottenham in an £8million move on Friday, with the clear intention of taking the No 1 shirt from Brad Friedel. With Friedel now 41, it appeared Lloris, 16 years his junior, had been brought in with the idea of replacing the veteran American. But Friedel responded to his arrival by producing one of the performances of his career against Norwich on Saturday. That prompted VillasBoas to say that Lloris would have a fight on his hands to win a starting spot. That does not appear to have gone down too well with Lloris, who linked up with the national team on Monday.

Camacho seals a great away win for Malaga Real Zaragoza 0 - 1 Malaga After the great away performance against Panathinaikos in midweek which sealed Malaga's Champions League spot, Malaga travelled to Zaragoza looking for league points to maintain their good start. Malaga's players wore t-shirts at the start of the game with the names of all the towns that were affected by the recent fires. On a pitch that resembled a park playing field, Malaga again started well with their good possession football. Zaragoza eventually came into the game, with Romeric testing Caballero from long range and then again the same player was set up brilliantly by Pinter on 18 minutes only to side foot the ball high and wide from just 12 yards. Joaquin

and Eliseu were at the heart of everything for Malaga who remained fairly comfortable. Malaga's new signing Saviola came on after half time for his debut and gave Malaga more options up front. On 57 minutes Malaga went ahead, an Eliseu corner was met by Camacho at the far post who headed in well. With Malaga continuing to control things an Eliseu shot on 69 minutes was parried to Saviola who nearly scored from a tight angle. Zaragoza huffed and puffed but Malaga held on for the three points. With all that has happened at the Club this summer, the spirit is good

Andy Murray reached a level not seen since the Olympics to dismantle the young Canadian Milos Raonic and make the last eight of the US Open. Swapping the boiling heat of his last match against Feliciano Lopez on Saturday afternoon for a cool evening, the 25 yearold Scot humbled the world number fifteen in exactly two hours 6-4 6-4 62, managing to avoid the expected bad weather due to hit American’s Eastern Seaboard. For the eighth consecutive time Murray is through to a Grand Slam quarter final and now faces Croatian Marin Cilic, who he comfortably defeated en route to the Wimbledon final in July.

PARALYMPICS 2012

Ellie Simmonds will give it her all, but is just hoping for PB Ellie Simmonds made her third final of the Games, progressing fourth fastest with a season’s best in the S6 50m Freestyle. She goes tonight (Tuesday). The 17 year old, who won her second gold of London 2012 in the SM6 200m Individual Medley on Monday night again with a new world record, finished second in her heat in 36.45 – the second fastest time of her career. While she is world champion for the event, Simmonds insisted the 50m Freestyle was always going to be the weakest of her four events.
