Rajoy still cagey about bailout During his first televised interview since taking office, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy insisted on Monday that as far as a bailout or rescue is concerned, “we have not taken any decision because for the moment we must see if it is needed”. When asked by one of a panel of five journalists why he was dragging his feet on the bailout, he said it was not a “frivolous” decision that could be taken without first making a careful analysis. “On such issues, you have to be prudent and can’t work lightly,” Rajoy said. The PM said repeatedly during the interview that cutting the government’s deficit was more important than asking for a bailout. By implementing a series of spending cuts, Rajoy said his government was sending a message to foreign investors that Spain was taking the economic crisis seriously which would restore their confidence. “They’ll invest in us, production will increase and more jobs will provided,” he said. He also said the European Central Bank’s plans to buy bonds from indebted countries – under bailout conditions – sent a signal to the speculators who would not be able to drive up the costs of borrowing if the ECB stepped in to buy the bonds of debt-burdened eurozone members.

The Spanish government's implied borrowing costs fell sharply after the announcement. Rajoy also said that if he decides to ask for a bailout he would look closely at
any conditions imposed, adding "I would not like, and I could not accept, being told which were the concrete policies where we had to cut."

In the old days we used to do everything on paper and use the Royal Mail in the uK to communicate with each other. These days we use the internet for everything and, what an absolute pain it is when it doesn’t work. Last week we lost all our email system. The emails people had already sent us we still had but everything we were trying to send out and everything people were trying to send us were simply bouncing back and not going anywhere. We have had a lovely chap trying to fix it but it was all set up by someone who is no longer around so, of course, we have no passwords that work (the ones he gave us are not correct) so it has all been a bit of a trial.
Last chance to see it tomorrow, Thursday 13th at 7.30pm. Numbered seating, tickets can be bought in advance. For details see www.coinlife.info
The moral of the story is, always get everything you need in writing on paper, the old fashioned way, and double check that what you’ve been given works. Someone on a power trip is no good to man, beast or your company. We will be re-doing our emails so I will let you know what the new addresses are next week once they’re set up, and could anyone who has been trying to contact us please call me on 952 454 491 - we are still very much in business and raring to go as usual. On another note - I thought it was supposed to be getting much cooler this week, and it did for a couple of days but now.....Phew!
Public Works Minister Ana Pastor revealed on Monday that she is negotiating a toughening up of sanctions against airlines that breach safety regulations with the International Civil Aviation Organization and the European Commission.
He stressed that any decision he made about a bailout would not affect pensioners who were the least able to defend themselves. He pointed out that the part of the budget allocated to pensions was the only item that had not been cut and said he had no intention of doing so in the future.
His political opponents have accused Rajoy of holding back on the bailout question until the two regional elections to be held in the Basque Country and Galicia in October in the hope of helping his party hold on to the number of seats they have in each regional parliament. The PP has a majority of one in Galicia and threw in its lot with the Socialists to help them form a government after the last regional election.
Rajoy on set at La Primera
Rajoy’s Partido Popular won a landslide victory in a general election last November, making him one of the few European leaders to hold a comfortable parliamentary majority. However, opinion polls show his popularity plunging, and after a summer lull, the trade unions are promising to give him a “hot autumn” of strikes and street protests. Last Friday, civil servants in Madrid walked out of their government offices at noon, unfolded banners and blocked traffic for about 15 minutes to protest against

Mr. Rajoy’s decision to scrap their Christmas bonus this year, equivalent to about a month’s salary. One told reporters they could accept the need for cuts if they actually served some purpose, “but the economy has instead gone from bad to worse, and nobody is now in any position to convince us that more cuts will bring us out of this mess”.
The move comes in the wake of a series of incidents in Spain involving low-cost carrier Ryanair. She also said there had been a meeting between the Spanish and Irish governments in August to talk about strengthening the Spanish authorities’ powers over foreign airlines with a strong presence in Spain. Pastor said it was good that there is competition that lowers prices but “we

are not going to allow for low security”. Without mentioning Ryanair, Pastor cited an incident involving the loss of cabin pressure, which occurred on a Ryanair flight from Madrid to Gran Canaria last week. Her ministry is currently investigating three emergency landings involving Ryanair planes in Valencia at the end of July, due to the flights running low on fuel. The minister said she was in favour of foreign authorities having the power to withdraw an airline’s license, rather than just the company’s home country. However, she said that was an extreme measure and she preferred tougher sanctions before going that far.

It was watched by 1.2 million people, a slightly better figure than the 800,000 who switch to TVE1 on an average afternoon. Very few people tuned in
in Galicia or the Canary Islands where bullfights were banned some years ago. The regions keenest on bullfighting were Murcia (24 per cent), Castilla-La Mancha (19 per cent) and Aragon (18.8 per cent), all well above TVE1’s national audience share average of 12.7 per cent. The Catalans

banned bullfighting as of January 1st this year but 9.3 per cent watched the fight, as did 12.9 per cent in the Basque Country, where many people don’t like anything remotely “Spanish”. Audience share analysts concluded that those two regions’ aversion to bullfighting is more political than social.

National News Regional MPs to lose salaries
Jobless to clear burnt land The Cabinet has approved a new rule by which people on the dole can be drafted in to help clear up brush and replant forest land that has been destroyed by this summer’s rash of wildfires. If they refuse, they could lose up to three months of benefit payments. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya
Sáenz de Santamaría said the only people who will be called on will be those in the Plan Prepara programme, the government’s safety net subsidy for long-term jobless whose benefits have run out. She stressed that they will not be asked to help
put out fires. So far this year, around 180,000 hectares of land have been destroyed by fires, which have also claimed nine lives.
Spain has most ni-nis A ni-ni is a person aged between 15 and 29 who lives at home and neither works nor studies (ni trabaja ni estudia) and in the EU, Spain has the highest number of them, according to figures from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The average percentage of
ni-nis in the OECD 34 member countries is 15.8 per cent, way below Spain’s 23.7 per cent.
Castilla-La Mancha regional MPs belonging to the Partido Popular applauded after voting in favour of a plan put forward by regional premier María Dolores de Cospedal to abolish all salaries for members of the regional parliament, beginning next year. Instead, they will be paid a fee for every parliamentary session attended. She also proposed reducing the current number of 49 MPs. Eliminating the salaries will save the regional government €1.5 million.

Madrid
EuroVegas will finally be built just outside Madrid after months of uncertainty, while Seat belt campaign under way US business tycoon Sheldon Adelson, the world’s 14th richest individual and owner of the adults and half of the children under 12 who died of Las Vegas Sands (LVS), was deciding between the nation’s capital or Barcelona. ainquarter road accidents in July and august were not wearing seat belts, according to traffic authority (dGt) figures. in response to this – as well as the fact school started again this week – the dGt has launched another awareness campaign focusing on seat belts which ends on Sunday September 16th. a dGt spokesman said not wearing a seat belt increases the risk of dying five times over when the vehicle is involved in an accident. He said the dGt chose this week for the campaign because of the increased risk of accidents as children are ferried to and from school.
Both cities were keen to host the enormous gambling complex that could hold up to 12 resorts with 3,000 rooms each, six casinos, an auditorium with a seating capacity for 15,000 people, nine show rooms, seven theatres, dozens of restaurants, bars and nightclubs, between one and three golf courses and 40,000 parking spots. Not everyone was happy with the decision. Adelson has demanded special legal treatment for his complex, including exemptions from labour laws, the smoking ban and major tax breaks for a decade. Tomás Gómez, the Socialists’ branch secretary in Madrid said the party will be “very vigilant” when it comes to “the secret conditions” negotiated between Aguirre’s government and the magnate because “the law must be the same for
nationwide

everyone”. UPyD spokesman Luis de Velasco said his party had opposed the project from day one “because we disagree with this growth model based on gambling for the region; we disagree with the final goal, with the legislative concessions and with the public economic resources that will be used”. United Left leader Cayo Lara said that EuroVegas will “use up resources to
finance a factory of compulsive gamblers” and create “a tax haven with all the undeclared money of someone who is used to financing the Tea Party in the United States,” referring to Adelson’s support for certain Republican politicians. Meanwhile, Catalonia’s response was to announce the creation of six new parks with global themes. Spanish billionaire Enrique Banuelos and his
Veremonte firm said they will construct the so-called “Barcelona World” on 1.5 million square metres of land belonging to La Caixa in Tarragona province.
Just over 20 per cent of Spaniards would like to go back to the peseta, which disappeared when the country went over to the euro in 2002, according to the Metroscopia survey published in el Pais. the euro was introduced in January 2000 but both currencies were used until 2002. disillusionment with the euro has increased in Spain since the economic crisis began, with some economists arguing that abandoning it could help economically troubled nations boost their competitiveness and make it easier for them to pay off their debts. But other economists warn that the costs of leaving the euro would outweigh the benefits as it would probably cause a collapse in the banking system and unleash rampant inflation.
The €4.5 billion investment is expected to create 20,000 direct jobs. The parks will be used to recreate six areas of the world: Europe, the United States, Russia, China, Brazil and India. Six hotels, with 2,000 rooms each, will also be built at each park.

US 'covered up' Soviet N guilt over Katyn

Newly released documents appear to support the idea that the Roosevelt administration helped cover up Soviet guilt for the 1940 Katyn massacre of Polish soldiers, officers, politicians and artists because it did not want to anger its wartime ally, Joseph Stalin. The documents were made public by the US National Archives on Monday. More than 22,000 Poles were killed by the NKVD secret police on Stalin's orders. Soviet Russia only admitted to the atrocity in 1990 after blaming the Nazis for five decades. The documents show that American prisoners of war sent coded messages to Washington in 1943 saying they had seen corpses in an advanced state of decay in the Katyn forest near Smolensk, in western Russia. A group of American and British POWs had been taken by the Nazis against their will to witness the scene. In an exclusive report, the Associated Press said the information proves that the

Jewish and Muslim organisations staged a joint protest on Sunday in Berlin after learning that a rabbi in Bavaria was being investigated for carrying out a circumcision – a cologne court ruled earlier this year that this constituted bodily harm. The document signed by a senior general, christian chateau, asked recruiters to do their utmost to find soldiers "morally and intellectually" prepared for military service, stating that people with mental, socio-economic problems or criminal behaviour, as well as homosexuals and Jehovah's Witnesses, should be excluded from the army. General chateau said the instruction was meant as a guide for recruiters. Defence minister Andres Allamand also rejected the army directive, saying it contradicted government and army policy against discrimination and should be disregarded immediately. inDiA

9/11 cancer victims to get free treatment The US federal government has added about 50 types of cancer to the list of illnesses to be covered by a 9/11 health programme, which will entitle 70,000 surviving emergency service workers and other survivors to free care. The National Institute for Occupational Safety announced the change on the eve of the attacks' 11th anniversary. About 1,000
deaths have been linked to illnesses caused by toxic dust spewed by wreckage at ground zero. Construction workers, first responders, office cleaners and others all fell ill in the decade after the attacks. Cancers to be covered include lung and colorectal, breast and bladder, leukaemia, melanoma and all childhood cancers. Until
now, most of the health compensation was for respiratory diseases linked to the toxic dust and fumes from the fallen towers. In a statement, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the decision would "continue to ensure that those who have become ill due to the heinous attacks on 9/11 get the medical care they need and deserve".
Murdered Briton ‘acted strangely’ Tourists staying at the Village Camping Europa site in Saint-Jorioz when Saad al-Hilli, 50, checked in with his family said he had been acting strangely, driving off four or five times a day, leaving his 47-yearold wife Iqbal, his mother-in-law Suhaila alAllaf, 74, and daughters Zainab, seven and Zeena, four, at the site. He

fellow
tourists the family planned to stay for a week, then suddenly switched to the Solitaire du Lac campsite, just a few hundred yards down the road. They said they had not seen anyone visiting the family but had noticed a smartly dressed man who appeared to come from the Balkans at the site when the al-Hillis arrived. A French police source
confirmed the family’s abrupt change of site and said Mr al-Hilli had met several people in the region in the days before the killings. The source also said relatives of the two al-Hilli girls who had travelled to France to be with them were “terrified” of being targeted themselves and had asked for, and received, police protection.

A level student dies in knife attack at party
N
EWS IN BRIEF
London Police are questioning three teenagers, one of 17 and two of 18, over the death of 17-year-old A level student Jay Whiston who was apparently trying to protect a friend when he was fatally stabbed at 10pm on Saturday night outside a house party in an affluent area of Colchester, Essex. It is believed that someone had advertised the party on Facebook and more than 100 teenagers had turned up. Jay was taken to Colchester General Hospital with abdominal injuries but died soon after
his arrival. His mother, Caroline Shearer, 46, said: “It is every mother’s worst nightmare. He was loved by everyone and was so caring. He hated bullies and people being unfair. I’m still feeling numb but I’m starting to feel angry now. How can thugs ruin innocent lives at will? There’s no rhyme or reason to it.” Police said every teenager at the party in Marlowe Way was a witness to the killing but added that the house had a garden big enough to cater for the teenagers that turned up.
Neighbouring front gardens were found to be strewn with empty vodka bottles and beer cans and a neighbour said that a woman and her teenage daughter had been to see them to apologise for any extra noise in advance of the party. Police cordoned off several neighbouring houses searching for forensic clues following the incident. Festival goers killed and injured in coach crash A coach left the road after hitting a tree on an embankment – overturning on the northbound side of the A3 near Hindhead, Surrey at around 11.50pm between the Hindhead tunnel and the Thursley exit on Monday night – killing three who were declared dead at the scene and injuring 50 others, one seriously. The coach had only been travelling for approximately 1 hour and weather conditions are not thought to have been a factor in the accident. It is believed that the driver is one of the dead and police were still carrying out a
“body recovery operation” the following morning. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved. The passengers were returning from the Bestival Festival on the Isle of Wight. One passenger was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital with “life changing injuries” whilst others were taken to the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford, St. Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey, St. George’s Hospital in Tooting and King’s College Hospital both in London, Frimley Park Hospital and Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.
The Merseypride coach was travelling from the Isle of Wight in the south of England taking passengers back to the Liverpool area. Waverley Council set up a crisis centre for emergency staff and the British Red Cross gave assistance. The charity said: "In response to the coach crash in Surrey we deployed volunteers and two ambulances to manage a rest centre and assist A&E." Police from Surrey were working with their counterparts in Merseyside and the coach company to identify the dead and injured.
Head found on Sunday afternoon police recovered a severed head from the Regent’s Canal in London where the decapitated remains of East Enders actress Gemma McCluskie, 29, were found in March. Her headless and limbless remains were found in the canal a week after the actress, who played Kerry Skinner in the BBC soap, had been reported missing from her home in Pelter Street, Hackney, that she shared with her brother Tony McCluskie, following her attendance at the opening of the new £650 million Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel in London’s East End. Police could not confirm or deny that the recovered head was that of Ms McCluskie. Tony McCluskie, 35, is due to stand trial accused of the murder of his sister on november 12th.

Free schools Twice as many free schools as were available in 2011 opened their doors as the new school year started amid claims that millions of pounds are being wasted on them. Education secretary Michael Gove said he hoped that the 55 new schools – mostly primary and secondary but with one catering for pupils up to the age of 19 – would be as successful as the 24 launched last September. However two schools failed to attract enough pupils over the summer to open their doors.

Proud to be British Britain's spectacular summer of sport ended on Sunday with the 11-day Paralympic Games’ closing ceremony led by Coldplay as the Olympic Stadium once again hosted a memorable party for athletes and fans alike. "We've shared some wonderful days haven't we?" London Olympics’ chairman Sebastian Coe said to the packed stadium who gave a roar of approval. Days where incredible people have performed feats we hardly thought possible. The Paralympians have lifted the cloud of limitation." The London Paralympics sold 2.7 million tickets in total, almost 900,000 more tickets than Beijing four years ago and the unprecedented sales brought in nearly £45 million, exceeding organisers' original target of £35m. The ramped-up coverage and interest was felt everywhere, Alan Oliveira's shock defeat of Oscar Pistorius in the 200 metres final even "knocked out" all the football coverage in Brazil, said IPC
chief executive Xavi Gonzalez. Pistorius said after his 400 metres win on Saturday that the Olympics and Paralympics in London had been "the biggest highlight" of his life. International Paralympic Committee president Philip Craven could barely believe the amount of coverage. "I'm floating on cloud nine, sometimes cloud 10 or 11," he said. "When you get everything in alignment you get a damn big bang and that's what we've had here," he said. Coldplay's music dominated the ceremony supported by singer Rihanna and rapper Jay-Z and there was a big sigh as Craven declared the Games closed – only for Brazilian dancers to follow the mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes on to the stage and whet the appetite for the next Olympics in South America.

thanks to viewers and supporters over the course of the Games, including Australia's Evan O'Hanlon, who won the 100 and 200 metres in the T38 class for cerebral palsy sufferers. He said: "You have massive profiles over here. Hopefully London and Britain have set an example and the rest of the world can follow. Thanks to everyone for watching. Even just flicking on the TV is bringing our profile up." It has been said that it is hoped that people will now look on disabilities in a new light. One says that disabled people are just the same as everyone else but with an extra challenge thrown in and, after seeing the amazing Paralympians throughout the games, that view must surely be the way forward.

Local News Another summer heat record set According to Malaga’s Meteorological Centre, this summer set a new record with an average temperature of 26.6 degrees, the highest since records started in 1942. The figure is the average of the combined day and night temperatures and is 2.1 degrees higher than the average for the summer of 2000. A spokesman said the
average had been rising since 1999. This year’s average temperature in August was even higher – 27.8 – because of the hot terral wind blowing from North Africa. The highest average day temperature recorded in August was 32.4 degrees, with the highest day temperature on the 12th, when the mercury hit 41.4 degrees.

Beware bad translators the council’s foreigners office has reported several cases of fraudulent translations made by non-official interpreters which councillor Katja Westerdahl described as “some people calling themselves professionals taking advantage of foreigners’ ignorance of the regulations regarding official documents”. She said translations of official documents had to be done by interpreters registered with the local council or courts. She added that people can report these translators to the foreigners office on the fourth flour of the town hall, which is open monday to friday from 9 am to 2 pm. eSteponA

It was also the start of the current economic crisis and figures had been dropping steadily since then. This year’s figure made Malaga the most used airport in Spain after Barcelona. According to Airport Authority (AENA) figures, just over 870,000 people have passed through Malaga airport since the beginning of the year, with the overall figure for the whole of the country standing at 134 million.
protección Civil has rescued 82 people so far this year, and attended to 3,502 people stung by jellyfish. A council spokesman said these stings amounted to more than 70 per cent of beach injuries. the remainder were either cuts, burns or the removal of spines from sea urchins – 75 people were injured seriously enough to require hospital treatment. the volunteers also dealt with 41 lost children, all of whom were returned safely to their parents. there were over 300 cases involving the incorrect use of fishing rods, ball games on the beach and boats in areas reserved for bathers. motril
Guardia Civil rescue migrants the Guardia Civil rescue patrol picked up 42 immigrants in a rubber boat 16 miles away from the small Spanish-owned island of Alborán just off the moroccan coast on Sunday. Among the immigrants on the boat was a heavily pregnant woman who was taken to the hospital in motril. All were from sub-Saharan Africa, apart from three Asians. the small islands and outcrops on the moroccan coast are being increasingly used by migrants trying to sneak into Spain and for the trafficking in human beings by the mafia.

A little shedding of light
Lost in words
O
P
n Monday night, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy gave his first television interview since coming to power nine months ago, with questions from five journalists from the country’s main newspapers. It’s just finished so I don’t know what the viewing figures are like, but I hope a lot of people watched it because it gave him the opportunity to explain his austerity measures in more detail than the newspapers normally allow him. The interview was on the state-owned TVE1 but I can assure you that didn’t make any difference to the journalists, whose questions were quite aggressive.
O
ne of the problems on the economic scene today is that while the pundits in the left-wing press scream on about the cuts and bailouts, they never actually get round to telling us why they’re necessary. Rajoy used the example of a person who earns €1,000 a month but spends €1,500, having borrowed the extra €500. And there comes a point when nobody will continue lending you that extra money and – horror of horrors – you even have to start paying it back. It’s a bit simplistic, I admit, but it illustrates perfectly what has been happening at a national, regional and local level for years now. For example, which is mine not his, local councils have spent a lot of money on beautifying (for want of a better word) their towns. Here in Coin, the former Socialist council bought several sculptures from a local artist – who was probably a friend of the mayor’s – to adorn some squares and roundabouts. Yet that same council owed €27 million to companies which had provided it with a service. Many of them have closed because the council’s debt ruined them. Rajoy’s government told the councils earlier this year to start paying their debts by the end of June in an attempt to get more money into circulation and hopefully to get some of the companies back on their feet.
A
nother example which was published in El Pais a few weeks back is that of Adrián González, who was elected mayor of the tiny community of Plasenzuela, in Cáceres province in Extremadura in the 2008 local and regional elections. The town (pop. 500) had a debt of €4 million which González found impossible to pay. He resigned earlier this year, becoming the first mayor in Spain to step down as a result of the economic crisis. During his first week in office he reported the previous administration for mismanagement and since then the authorities have been investigating what
looks like one of the worst cases of corruption in the region, with €6 million unaccounted for, and four people charged with defrauding the Social Security, as well as appropriating subsidies, misusing public money, and a host of other financial crimes. European, state, and regional funding has all disappeared without trace. There were projects that never existed; workers that never worked; taxes imposed on salaries that were never passed on to the state.
J
ust about everybody in the village knew what was going on, but not many want to talk about it. One man told El Pais that everybody thought the village was an island, and that nobody would ever find out what was going on. Now a judge in Trujillo is heading the investigation while the Specialized Crime Unit keeps on digging up the dirt.
G
onzález, a goatherd who was elected on the Socialist ticket, reported the irregularities to the regional Socialist Party bosses, who tried to sideline him. Shortly afterwards, one of the villagers wanted to know about his Social Security payments, and a few days later he woke up to find that the hillside where he grazes his goats had been set alight. He was able to put the flames out in time. The message – we have ways of making you toe the line. This scenario is repeated endlessly across Spain, in one version or another. However, this could change over the next three years or so, while Rajoy is in power. The regions have already been told to get their accounts in order – or else. Some regions don’t seem to have understood the message. The PP premier of Extremadura said this weekend that he was not going to raise the VAT on culture or school books. The government in Madrid immediately replied – don’t come running to us when you need money to pay your debts. We also have ways of making you toe the line.
A
s for the Socialists they keep harping on about Rajoy not keeping his election campaign promises. Socialist leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba rushed to France to meet Francois Hollande shortly after he won the election, believing he had found an ally on the European Union scene. Rubalcaba has said he will fight Rajoy’s cuts to the death – yet Hollande went back on his election promises on Monday and announced massive cuts. Economic reality has a nasty habit of throwing election promises on to the dust heap of history.
rime Minister Mariano Rajoy just doesn't get it. On Monday night he declined to answer outright any of the questions put to him by a panel of journalists during an interview with state broadcaster RTVE. Skirting the specifics about an eventual bailout, Rajoy instead focused on the need of pushing down Spain's deficit and not touching pensions. Sounding as if he were again running for office, he said those m atters were more important than talking about a bailout. A journalist asked whether he would be willing to explain to Spaniards point by point the conditions of any rescue plan so that everyone could understand them. He answered that he didn't think that was needed because those points will be made public by European officials, and should not be any different to the stipulations set out in the planned recapi talization of the banks approved by Brussels last June.
new terminology when describing his unprecedented bond-buying programme aimed at lowering borrowing costs for debt-laden nations such as Spain and Italy. Draghi, whose innovated action must be applauded, was speaking last Thursday about “Outright Monetary Transactions” or OTMs to describe the programme, and “soft bailouts” that could go to help Spain a nd Italy stabilise their risk premium markets. He also spoke of “strict conditions” countries who ask for OTMs will have to follow. Euphemisms aside, neither the Spanish government nor Brussels should try to pull the wool over people's eyes and disguise any type of aid package Madrid intends to receive as anything less than a bailout.
T
here should also be clearer signals from European leaders concerning Spain's responsibilities. Sources close to the European Commission were quoted on Monday as saying it could be that the reforms already implemented by the Rajoy government may just be enough to meet the requirements for a second bailout. But then again, no one is saying these things for the record, nor has there been any official stance from any of the EC leaders. EC vice president Joaquín Almunia did say that the requirements for Spain have already been laid out in the first rescue package approved in June, and there might not be a need to impose anymore conditions.
Mario Draghi
B
ut with all this talk and little action on Spain's part to officially seek a bailout there is still a lot of confusion over what it will entail. And far from helping the matter are the euphemisms being thrown out at us. On Monday, Rajoy preferred to use the word "credit" as opposed to rescue and opted to focus on growth and creating jobs rather than talk about the need to boost Spain’s finances with outside help. The prime minister however rejected that he was waiting for crucial elections in the Basque Country and Galicia to pass in October before asking for the bailout. "I need time to think about it because the government has to be very prudent seeing that we are talking about the interests of 47 million Spaniards," he said.
O
ver in Frankfurt, European Central Bank president Mario Draghi was also throwing out
T
he conditions for such a rescue plan also must be revealed beforehand to Spaniards who can voice their support or opposition to any package of measures that might affect them. But at the same time Rajoy needs to efficiently and effectively explain why Spain needs help and of course without the usual rhetoric of blaming the previous Socialist government for any trouble. As the prime minister acknowledged, this is an important decision that will affect Spaniards for years to come. And it is in his interest, as well as his responsibility, to ensure that all citizens are better informed about this programme. Just 10 years ago nobody was talking about debt m arkets, the risk premium rate or deficits. Now these have become everyday words being thrown about by the media, but many people are still not sure what they all mean and how they affect their daily lives.

the
e right and the wrong way of doing things Clearly, the right way of going on in life is to know what to do if something goes wrong. The wrong way can lead to you being helpless at a time when you can least aord to be. To that end, I would say that the more you can learn about how to handle a situation before it becomes a necessity is the right way, and therefore The News is backing a seminar this Friday, September 14th starting at 11 am, to be held in JK’s to help people cope with their problems while living in Spain. This follows on from a number of events that have been held and have been most popular. However, several people have said that they missed them and would we please do another. A panel of experts will be there to guide you through the realities of all the frightening stories you have heard on the grapevine about “what to do if.....â€?. They will be there to advise you on the best, and often cheapest way forward. Kym Wickham will be there from The News Helpdesk that can help you with questions about Telefonica and Vodfone (well, let’s face it, who hasn’t had problems with them?!), electricity queries, problems with planning and legalisation of building and extensions etc., changing of driving licences and renewal of passports, importation and exportation of vehicles, hospital visits and pretty much anything else you can think of. So, if you’re worried and don’t know what to do, forget sleepless nights – ask us! Cath Dillon from Speed Financial Solutions will be able to help you with
financial planning. Plus Lloyds Bank TSB from Gibraltar will be on hand for further financial advice. The main thrust of the seminar will be what to do if someone dies. Of course, you can ask me anything else you want on pretty much any subject as mentioned before but Tracy Burns representing Funeraria Funeral Directors will dispel the horror stories about what happens if a loved one dies and Avalon will be able to give you advice on how to plan for such an event. Tracy has years of experience organising funerals, liaising with religious ministers and dealing with everything that goes with a funeral. She will tell you where you can be cremated or buried and how long you can take to do it. Most people think you only have 24 hours here – wrong! There is time allowed for your relatives to get here from different parts of the world. There are very different procedures for people who die in hospital compared to those who die at home and Tracy will explain how you can choose who you use. I have lived here for fifteen years and almost five years ago now, had to deal with a death that happened in a hospital. Maureen had suffered a heart attack and didn’t survive for more than a couple of days. There was no will and no family that anyone was aware of. The body was taken to a viewing room in the hospital’s

I could have used a funeral director of my choice but I had no idea what to do at that time and it turns out that most of us living here in Spain don’t either!
will be there to tell you how you can arrange and pay for your funeral in advance.
John Sutton is a qualified solicitor and deals with the legal side of things. He will tell you what to do about wills, death duties that may or may not have to be paid, how any inheritances would need to be divided and the best ways of doing that, and how you should deal with banks if you have had joint accounts or one-persononly personal accounts. I have used John and found him to be excellent.
This will not be a hard sell seminar and, if you want information on companies that offer services, it will be up to you to come and ask afterwards – no-one will be chasing you.
The Reverend David Such will also be there to give advice. Caroline MacFarlane and the Venerable David Sutch will talk about Christian services and how they can be adapted to suit your wishes. They will explain that they will, wherever possible, include what you wish to say about your loved one at the service and they are there to help you through the process.
If you want to come but need more information or directions call the Helpdesk on 952 454 491 from 10:30am until 5pm. Yes, I know it’s in Coin but we’re not in the back of beyond, it’s very easy to get to up here now and JK’s is just a little way off the motorway so no excuses for not coming along and getting the knowledge you may one day need – read on!!
Some things you can deal with before a death happens but it is incredibly important that all of us: husbands as well as wives, children, relatives and neighbours should all have a clue about what to do if the worst happens. Everybody who doesn’t know, or has an inkling they don’t, should come along to this seminar – Don’t get caught out when it matters most. JK’s is on the Poligono La Trocha, behind the La Trocha petrol station. If you need any further information or directions call Tracy on 620 374 191. See you there!

DEBRA: who are they and what do they do DEBRA Spain, founded in 1993, is a non profitmaking organisation formed to provide support and to improve the quality of life of those affected by EB. The charity works hard to provide the following: 1. Emotional and medical support to families and carers, as well as social services professionals with information and guidance. 2. Fully trained nurses who travel throughout Spain visiting families in their own homes. 3. Information and advice on all aspects of the disease, coordinating with doctors and health services to ensure patients receive the correct treatment. 4. Support for research programmes into a possible cure. 5. Media campaigns to promote

Blistering also occurs internally (in the mouth, oesophagus, intestine, airways, urinary tracts and even the inside of the eyelids) leading to further suffering and serious health problems. EB also becomes a disability because people suffering from this condition require intensive daily care from their relatives. They also lose the use of their hands and feet due to the extent of the blistering and the retraction of the skin in these areas. Life expectancy is unfortunately short; hence the majority of DEBRA’s members are children.

This is Bambi one of FAMA’s latest little dogs found in the Campo abandoned, lost, hungry, scared and lonely. At only 32cm in height weighing 4.4 kilos, she is a cute little dog that seems healthy, but her owner could either not look after her anymore, or just did not want her. Fortunately she was found and brought to FAMA where she is being looked after and loved until we can find her a good home of her own. Bambi has no issues with the other dogs, although she is a little shy, and would love someone to come and take her home. She is very affectionate and loves her cuddles. Unfortunately Bambi is only one of many dogs looking for a good home. If you would like more information about Bambi or meet her in person call Pat on 620 354 885 or visit our NEW website www.famaspain.com
Many people love their dogs and think that it’d be a great idea to breed from them – but have you really thought your reasons through?
Is your bitch of suitable breeding quality? Do you know her faults as well as her virtues? Does she meet the Standard of the breed? Is she of desirable temperament? Is she of sound health? Do you have customers so that the pups don't end up in the pound? If you can answer "yes" to all of these questions and are still determined to try your hand at raising a litter, then read on for the list of things to do next (time consuming, isn't it?!?): Get an opinion of your bitch from reputable breeders. Learn about genetic problems within the breed. Seek advice about potential stud dogs. Go and look at the offspring of your chosen stud dog. Be sure that the stud dog has no genetic problems. (You can be sued for selling
genetically unsound puppies.) Costs Money. After you have chosen your stud dog, take your bitch to the vet. She needs to be x-rayed and hip scored. Costs Money. Her eyes need to be checked for defects. Costs Money. She needs to have a full health check. Costs Money. Many bitches die in whelp due to unforeseen problems. Costs Money. The bitch needs to be wormed and vaccinated.Costs Money. All this is going to cost money, but it's necessary when planning for a health litter. Now, while you're waiting for her to come into season, read all the books you can on your particular breed, breeding, whelping and rearing young puppies. Start saving all the newspapers and have your friends and relatives do the same (remember what we told you about all that cleaning up). You will need all the newspapers you can get your hands on. Have a whelping box built. Costs Money.

Amazon.com Inc unveiled larger Kindle Fire tablets on Thursday, challenging Apple Inc's dominant iPad with lower prices and a trove of digital content that Amazon hopes will win it a bigger share of the booming tablet market. The world's largest Internet retailer lifted the lid on devices with price tags starting from £129. The new tablets come with ads known as "special offers" that appear when screens
are locked and in the corner of the home screen, helping Amazon keep prices low. The 7in Kindle Fire HD with 16GB of storage will cost £159 in the UK, and the lower-end Kindle Fire £129. Both will be available for delivery from 25th October and can be bought through Amazon and delivered to Spain.

Markets Pógs Blues, Rock, Northern Soul and more... Pógs live music bar in Fuengirola is all set to take on the 2012 Autumn season. Ever on-going Pógs is probably still the most popular live music venue in the Fuengirola area and as such hosts many of the more talented bands and soloists on the coast. This friendly, easy-going Irish style bar provides great value and is the back drop to a range of musical styles. Rock, blues, pop, funk, soul, swing, traditional Irish and as of late jazz, all find a home here sometime between the Wednesday night jam and the Sunday Session. Wednesday's Jam Session under the guidance of guitarist singer Alice Reay and friends is a musicians’ night. If you can play or sing, then feel free to jump in and join the band, there is always a space, a couple of spare guitars, mikes, or even the drum kit just for the asking. It is open to all, young and not so young, with the best musicians being probably the ones who have the most fun. Thursdays have recently evolved into an excellent open jazz night with pretty much the same rules. Both are good nights out and attract a healthy following. Weekend is party time – rock, blues, soul whatever takes your fancy –- Pógs is the place if you love it live. Last Saturday Mama Paula and the Kasper Jensen Band with Dr Moonlight (aka Paul Stylianou) on blues harp, had the place bouncing in no time flat with their renditions of some excellent classic blues rock. There is plenty more in the pipeline for this month too. Starting this Friday 14th, with blues rock band Trio del Saco and then on Saturday the very up-beat Legal Aliens, with dance, soul and disco classics. Sunday nights are either the turn of Alice Reay and Carl Parry with their more laid back soft rock or Chicago Jim and Mandolin Mick for popular music with a Celtic twist, little bit of Motown and some banter thrown in for good measure. Often 60’s and 70’s inspired, always acoustically “kool” and
starting around 9.00 pm both of these duos round off the weekend nicely. This coming weekend, that's Sunday 16th, funky modern rock band Fun Fiction front a gig and open jam in honour of the “open to all” leaving party for Jade and Amy John. After many years in Spain Amy and Jade are off to seek fame and fortune in the frozen north...hasta pronto ladies. The following weekend the all action rock band Stereo 80 crank it up on Friday 21st and the following Friday 28th September, Rolling Stones tribute band the Honky Tonk Cats give out some more satisfaction. Saturday 29th Pógs puts on a second special night for the fans of Northern Soul, Classic Soul, Ska and Reggae. Plenty of excellent nights to be had by all throughout September. On the horizon, look forward to hearing The Steve Nelson Band who never miss a beat at the popular Sunday Session, as well as other tried and tested favourites

Fun in the park For around 25 years now the International Theatre Studio has presented an annual outdoor production in aid of a charity. This year the proceeds will be for Age Concern Estepona & Manilva and will be held in the beautiful Parque Leonera Benahavis on the 16th September at 7pm. As usual the presentation of music and comedy is in two sections with a long interval between during which the audience will enjoy their
When you go to The Village Inn at Plaza Santa Monica, Urb. Carib Playa, Pueblo Andaluz, on the sea side of the N340 at Km 194 at the Las Chapas exit, you will be sure of eating the freshest, best quality food available. The Village Inn is in a “Pueblo Andaluz” with its typical dwellings surrounding a pretty Andalucian courtyard complete with cobblestones and fountain, various shops and even a bespoke guitar maker. The Village Inn has a large covered patio area so you can dine al fresco when the weather is good, and be cosy during the winter months. The Village Inn specialises in barbecue meats including various cuts of succulent steaks, chicken and pork. You can have chicken or beef kebabs also cooked on the barbecue that come with all the trimmings. On the main menu there are home-made dishes
including various fish choices and, if you have any room left, there is a huge choice of puddings to finish with. The own label house wine is good but an extensive wine list gives you plenty to chose from. On Thursday nights there is live entertainment from Leonor and on Saturday nights you can enjoy a spectacular Flamenco show with a difference. The Compania Solera de Jerez with Laura Cano, Yolanda Paez and Maria Bernal dance Sevillanas and traditional Flamenco but also have devised a modern form that incorporates the best of Flamenco with modern dance that was a joy to watch. The three ladies, on the Saturday we were there, gave a show in three stages lasting around an hour that had everybody on their feet at the end shouting “Olé”. MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Directed by Timur Bekmambetov Starring: Benjamin Walker, Rufus Sewell and Dominic Cooper Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov reinvent this time-honoured genre and present the terrifying creatures of the night as they were meant to be experienced – as fierce, visceral, intense and bloodthirsty. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter brings to the screen the secret life of the US president – as history's greatest hunter of the undead. Bekmambetov marshals a first-rate production design team for this screen
adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s bestseller (scripted by the author), and the opening shot of this movie is spectacular. We see the contemporary skyline of Washington, and then watch as the modern buildings and the infrastructure gradually melt away, taking us back to the marshy city of the 16th president. The White House is surrounded by open fields and stone rowhouses, and the Washington Monument is
only half completed. Lincoln’s young life in the Indiana wilderness and the frontier capital of Springfield, Illinois, is also captured in impressive detail. One can only wish that the story and characters seemed either a) halfway convincing in the context of 19th-century America, or b) worth the time and effort it takes to watch it – let alone the immense expense and hard work of making it.
DVD NEW RELEASE Release date: September , 2012
THE HOT POTATO Starring: Ray Winston, Colin Meaney & Jack Huston London's East End, 1969: Our heroes Kenny (Ray Winston) and Danny (Jack Huston) come into possession of a mysterious box which turns out to contain a large lump of weapons grade Uranium – a true Hot Potato! Initially unaware of The Hot Potato's true value they very quickly realise the danger they've been exposed to. Ably assisted by Danny's girlfriend, the beautiful Carole (Lois Winstone) and shadowed
at every turn by the unshakeable criminal Harry (Colm Meadey), Kenny and Danny reluctantly embark on a quest to offload the potato to the highest bidder. Taking them on an epic journey that criss-crosses Europe, and into the company of an ever increasing assortment of shady and bizarre characters, Hot Potato is an 'Italian Job' tinged crime caper that you won't forget!

VIRGO
You wish to improve your life and your emotional connections starting with the ones at home. The more you give the more you truly gain in the long run and in the ways that matter the most. On one hand your heart is preparing to soften and on the other hand you could come across to others as slightly arrogant. Taking control is your aim, to fix all that needs to be fixed, to clean things up and make them better. Others may find you more critical than usual this week as your ruling planet Mercury finds itself in Virgo, you will be seeking perfection in certain areas and, in order to achieve this, all that needs changing will become startlingly obvious. By the weekend fun will be calling you and your mood lightens as a heavy load lifts. The path ahead is lit up and the way forward is revealed without much effort on your part. The tides are set to shift in your favour and when you least expect it someone will surprise and amaze you. This is due to your rising up and speaking your mind, you hold everything in Cancer and crawl into your shell when you are emotionally hurt but then something incredible happens, after a while your energy rises and you grow in strength. Anyone who has thought you are a push over quickly regret their actions. Your persistence is about to pay off, something you have been doggedly determined to achieve is about to come to fruition. The matter is going to pan out or play out in a way that tells you it was all worth the effort. Your heart gets a lift and you will feel more alive than you have for a while as you get to experience more of what you really need rather than what you want. Solutions are now possible that you thought would never occur. You do not really know how bright your light shines but your natural humility is the most attractive quality Virgo and it is truly admirable. Not only that, you have an ability to bring others down to earth and see the funny side of things. This will be a week where you are radiating and getting your plans in order. There will be social moments as well as a lot to organise, so expect a busy week where your feet hardly touch the ground.
You have had a lot of experience lately in how to create stronger boundaries LIBRA for yourself, to protect yourself from others who can take advantage of your good nature, and gain the respect you deserve. You are also learning how to reinvent yourself and to remain persistent. Networking is on the agenda and you will build your connections and acquaintances in areas that you have rd September 23 previously struggled with. There is a new stamina in you now that will carry nd October 22 you long and far.
SCORPIO
October 23rd November 21st
With careful planning you will be able to work towards breaking new ground, your energy levels are high and you will be able to conquer, achieve and complete anything you put your mind to. After a recent dispute or stormy time there is liberating change on the horizon, it will feel good to mix things up and loosen those reins. The key is for you to look at an area of your life where you may have become too fixed and give it some slack.
SAGITTARIUS You find yourself standing in brand new territory, this isn’t a holiday however, vital choices have been and still continue to have to be made. An injection of welcomed optimism makes the journey easier. Siblings and those in your local community gather around you ready to help in any way they can. There is a November 22nd - hub of energy about you that others will be attracted to, ask for what you want December 21st and you will receive.
CAPRICORN You will discover this week who the people are in your life who support you unconditionally. If there has been anything brewing under the surface, then it needs to come up and out. Even if it is a negative emotion you have been feeling that you are not proud of, perhaps jealousy or lingering resentment December 22nd - of some kind. The sheer expression of emotion in conversation will feel like a January 19th mountain of weight has lifted.
AQUARIUS

PISCES
February 19th March 20th
Your love life is set to soar and compliments are coming your way, you will be attracting people who want to help you or enjoy your unique presence in the world. Their company will go far to ease the daily grind, replacing some of those cold shadows, with a warm light. Life is so much more enjoyable when you share it with someone, no man is an island and this week you realise this. Jump in and embrace your popularity.
Productive exchanges are ahead to do with those who mean the most to you. For this to happen though, everything has to come out on the table. Things are about to take a significant leap forward. There is a wave of emotion building within you that is ready to powerfully execute its final splash. Be wary of feelings of doubt and when they creep in take time out for yourself and find ways to nurture you.
...you don’t have to be a chef!
With the glut of tomatoes at the moment, one of our readers Angie Clifford has kindly sent in this recipe for roasting and freezing tomatoes that can be used at a later date
Slow cooked Tomatoes in Olive Oil For this recipe you can use any kind of tomatoes. In this photo I have used medium size round tomatoes, you can also use cherry tomatoes, plum tomatoes or beef tomatoes. Depending on what type and/or size of tomatoes you use cut into pieces accordingly, for instance a cherry tomato can be sliced in half and placed on tray cut side down. A medium round tomato can be sliced in circles, or into four large quarters. Place on greased (with olive oil) baking tray and place in a very low (100c / gas 1) for about two hours. Keep checking as all oven temperatures vary. After the required amount of time the tomatoes should appear crinkled on their skins and still be slightly soft. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Depending on the amount you have cooked, place into any type of container – you could use a kilner jar, or an old used jar, you could use a plastic tub, you can even place in ice cube trays cover with olive oil and freeze – you can pop these out of your freezer when needed,ie, to make a sauce or add to a dish. Whatever you decide, cover liberally with olive oil making sure all the tomatoes are completely covered. These will keep in the fridge for at least two weeks (if completely covered in olive oil) Alternatively you can freeze. You can add flavourings to your jars/tubs the choice is yours: grind over sea salt or fresh black pepper. You can add some dried chillies or chilli
flakes if you like a bit of a kick. You could oven roast a few red chillies with your tomatoes and place one in each jar; alternatively you could roast a whole bulb of garlic with your tomato then place a clove or two in each pot! Maybe you can think of some more combinations. These tomatoes are a perfect addition to any sandwich. Use them on a salad, add to a tablespoon of mayonnaise and serve as a dip – really the combinations are endless. I would love to hear any other suggestions and/or your favourite tomato recipe. NB: A quick tip. Pick or buy a large bunch of fresh parsley, wash and chop finely and place in a plastic container, pop it into your freezer. When you need fresh chopped parsley for a recipe or to top off a dish remove the tub fromthe freezer and tease out with a knife the amount you require – it will last you for a long time and always appear vibrant and fresh(a thousand times better than a jar of dried parsley from the supermarket)

LESSON
August 23rd September 22nd
This could be an intense week, you know that you need to keep your nose to the grindstone and concentrate on one thing but there is still so much unpredictability going on, making it difficult to focus. Superficialities and pettiness annoy you at the moment you have a need to go deeper into things and cannot be doing with small talk. Others will find you magnetic and if you are single there is a strong chance of meeting someone.
Kym’s Kitchen
When you are in the supermarket and you have to ask for a carrier bag do you know what to ask for? Do you know the difference between a bolso and a bolsa? In Spanish so many words end in o or a and it is very important to make sure you are using the correct ending or things can get very confusing. A bolso is a handbag and a bolsa is a carrier bag of the sort that used to be free but we now usually have to pay 5 cents for. So, Me hace falta tres bolsas - I need three carrier bags. Another word I hear being confused on a regular basis is libro. Un libro is a book Una libra is a pound sterling. Libre is free (as in available, like taxis or spaces in car parks) Free, as in not having to pay, is gratis. Me costó veinte libras. It cost me twenty pounds. In the summer you may like to wear una gorra while in winter un gorro is more useful. Una gorra is a cap - like a baseball cap (with a peak to keep the sun off your face). Un gorro is a woolly hat to keep your head warm. If you are buying fruit, remember that many fruits ending in "a" come from trees ending in "o" Una manzana is an apple but un manzano an apple tree Una naranja an orange Un naranjo an orange tree Una ciruela a plum Un ciruelo a plum tree. Useful to remember as it will soon be the time of year for planting trees. And if you like a glass of wine, make sure you ask for Una copa de vino. Un copo is a snowflake – likely to confuse the barman. The list of similar words is endless and stories of using the wrong word are numerous and often hilarious. Most people know that a chicken is un pollo and that if you inadvertently change the final o to a you are talking about a penis. So do be careful! Hasta la próxima Until next time. Some plants Diabetes can get rid of cholesterol pollutants risk warning The majority of people with diabetes are not controlling cholesterol levels effectively, which puts them at increased risk of heart disease, Diabetes UK has warned.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the levels of air pollutants inside a home can far exceed the levels outside because of household cleaning products, central heating and cooling systems, and other indoor sources. However, NASA researchers have found that some plants can get rid of airborne chemicals, although only gradually. While investigating ways to rid spacecraft of airborne pollutants, some of them common offenders in American homes as well, the agency found that at least 15 common indoor plants can filter – to one degree or another – pollutants like the carcinogens benzene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is commonly found in curtains, glues and coating products. Benzene is a component of paints and tobacco smoke, and trichloroethylene is used in adhesives, spot removers and other household products. According to the NASA researchers, some of the most effective plants are devil's ivy, peace lilies,
The charity found in a recent audit that while 90% of people with the disease are having annual checks which will show up problems, many are not addressing their high cholesterol.
Pleomele, gerbera daisies and Sansevieria trifasciata – commonly called the snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue. Two other plants, the ficus and Japanese aralia, are also effective. They said a good rule of thumb is to have one plant for roughly every 100 square feet of living space.

A last chat with your loved one? Gravestones - usually cold-looking stark things with a name sometimes dates of birth and death, even more rarely what they died from but sometimes a little passage from their loved one trying to say how they feel or what the deceased person was like. And that’s about it until now. But wait…. Chester Pearce Funeral Directors of Poole in Dorset are offering, for a mere 300 quid, to create a QR barcode (that’s one of those black and white things people can downlñoad into their phone, then come up with all sorts of information) so that people
will be able to see a lot more text detail about the dearly departed, plus videos, perhaps of the person themselves, or their loved ones talking about them. Managing director Stephen Nimmo told Reuters that keeping their memory alive is very important and this is just an add-on to that. He said: “It's a new technology, it's something that there will be people who like it, there will be people who don't and that's the same in everything that we do," Nimmo said, adding: "We've all got a story to tell."

I hope Mr. Duncan Smith’s researchers have compiled their reports well.
Permit me to observations.
The average LOW temperature here in Fuengirola in December is 9º and in January and February it is 8º. In the campo the average temperature is even lower.
my
First of all the arrogance of the Minister for Works and Pensions, Ian Duncan Smith is incredible. He intends to challenge the ruling laid down by the European Court of Justice that Ex-Pats SHOULD be entitled to receive the W.F.A. Additionally it is reported that if the E. C. of J. ruling is upheld he intends to exclude Spain. Would that not be discrimination? I’m sure Mr. Duncan Smith is under the same illusion as other people in the UK who have never visited Spain in the winter months and who think that the sun shines every day and that temperatures are such that we can go and sunbathe on the beach all year round!!!
Here are a few facts :-
Now to Mr. Duncan Smith and the people of the UK that may seem rather pleasant in light of the lower temperatures in the UK. However to the people who live here that is COLD and necessitates the wearing of jerseys, jackets, scarves and often coats. I know in the winter months central heating is necessary in my apartment and as we all know electricity and gas prices have risen substantially here in recent months. While it is often brought up and ridiculed, we HAVE contributed over the years in the UK with National Insurance and even now I still contribute to the UK economy through direct taxation of my Civil Service Pension while receiving NO benefit whatsoever from the UK Govt. Oh I forgot, our 10 pounds Christmas "Bonus". What a joke that is! We know that the UK State Pension is the lowest in Europe. (In other European countries the state pension is paid to allow pensioners to live a lifestyle similar to that before they retired. In the UK the state pension is paid to keep pensioners just above the

Signs of the Zodiac Most people, at some time or another, have read their ‘stars’ in a newspaper or magazine but did you know that the signs of the Zodiac are real constellations that can be seen in the night sky?
Fuengirola
I’m sure you are being inundated with letters from readers with regard to the recent revelations regarding the Winter Fuel Allowance. add
Many thanks for their continued support because without them and the support of other individuals we could not carry on our work, which is to help abandoned and abused animals in whichever way we can.
starvation level!). Spanish pensioners receive a DOUBLE payment in June and December, (although granted that may not be the case this December). We have also suffered more than UK pensioners during the past three years due to the exchange rate which saw a big drop in our pensions. And more annoyingly we read daily and see on television the thousands (millions?) of immigrants who invaded the UK and are receiving a wide variety of benefits while contributing NOTHING to the UK economy and laughing in our faces. I have written to Mr. Duncan Smith expressing my views and disgust although I doubt very much I will receive a reply. However rest assured I will not accept his reasons or decisions for excluding ex-pat pensioners from receiving the W.F.A. as per the ruling of the European Court of Justice and will take it to the relevant Ombudsman and the European Court of Human Rights if necessary. I look forward to reading your other reader’s comments on this topic. P.S. I did suggest to IDS that if he refuses Spanish ex-pats the WFA he might like to consider a Summer Cooling Allowance to assist our increased power bills due to running air conditioning virtually 24 hours a day from June to September when temperatures are between 35-40º!
Alhaurin to where the fires were. On asking him to put it out, I got the usual shrug of shoulders, he turned his back on me and left it to burn. Aargh!
T
he Sun, Moon and all the planets travel across the sky in a very narrow band known as the ecliptic. It is along this band that the twelve signs of the zodiac can be found. I marvel at the imagination of the ancient Greeks and Babylonians who managed to pick out the individual stars that form the zodiacal constellations. Although it must be said that one or two of them do take an enormous amount of artistic imagination to recognise what they are supposed to represent!
T
T
he constellation of Virgo is a very widely distributed group of stars and bears no resemble to a pure maiden whatsoever. She was placed in the heavens by Zeus, probably because she was one of the few that managed to thwart off his advances.
he word Zodiac derives from the Greek word zōidiakos kuklos, meaning circle of animals. eight of the zodiac signs are animals or mythological hybrids of animals that stem from Greek mythology. Each of the 12 signs has a unique story attached to it justifying its reason to be included in the heavens.
L
T
he first constellation is Aries the Ram. Aries was the famed Golden Fleece that Jason and the Argonauts were searching for in the land of Colchis. In astronomy the constellation of Aries spreads from 0º to 29º longitude so the Sun enters the first point of Aries on March 21st the Spring Equinox. Aries is a very disappointing constellation of four stars in a slightly crooked straight line.
A
t this time of the year Scorpio can be seen crawling up the southern sky. Scorpio is one of my favourites and really does look like a scorpion. The bright red star Antares marks its eye with the tail and sting curving right down toward the horizon and off to the left. Scorpio cannot be fully seen from the UK and when I first saw it from Spain I was very impressed with the constellation.
I
S
n Greek mythology Zeus disguised himself as Taurus the Bull so as to rape Europa, a beautiful Phoenician princess. Why he thought he’d have better luck disguised as a bull is anyone’s guess! Taurus can be seen looking a bit like a bull in the winter night sky powering down upon Orion the hunter.
G
emini are the twin brothers who were sons of Zeus (he put himself about a bit did old Zeus). The two brightest stars are called Castor and Pollux and form an elongated rectangle with the other stars in the constellation.
C
ancer stems from several myths from Herakles to Perseus. The constellation is a very indistinct group of five stars that form a sort of ‘Y’ shape. There are no bright stars to speak of in Cancer.
N
ow, Leo does look a bit like one of the lions in Trafalgar Square London. The stars in its head form a sickle shape with the bright star Regulus at his breast. The rest of his body can be easily seen stretching out behind him as he lies ready for attack. Hercules killed Leo during his twelve labours.
ibrans are going to be very disappointed with their star sign; it is simply two not particularly bright stars about half way between Virgo and Scorpio.
agittarius the archer is half man half beast and his bow and arrow can easily be seen aiming at the heart of Scorpio. The rest of the constellation is a scattered grouping of faint stars.
C
apricorn is often depicted as half goat and half fish. It is said that Pan dived into the Nile to escape a monster. The parts below the water turned into a fish while the parts above the water remained as a goat.
A
quarius is another of Zeus’ goings on. Zeus turned himself into an eagle this time to carry Aquarius off to Olympus to be the water carrier to the Gods. Aquarius is another rather indistinct constellation with no really bright stars.
A
phrodite and Eros were mother and son who jumped into the river to escape the monster Typhon and were turned into fish. Their constellation of Pisces resembles a very large ‘V’ shape made up of 18 stars. The top of the right hand leg of the ‘V’ ends in a circle.
B
ut all this astrology sounds very fishy to me.

MP crashes his Mercedes into portable toilet
A Tory MP lost control of his Mercedes-Benz, hitting a portable toilet, several parked cars and a discount store wall. Banbury MP Sir Tony Baldry said his parked car ‘shot off’ as he opened the door to pick up a dropped parking ticket in Banbury, Oxfordshire before he was due to meet constituents. The car veered through a car park, hitting a portable toilet before going over a 3ft drop on to a busy road where it crashed into the wall of a Poundland store and then a van and three stationary cars in a council car park.
Hamilton silences Tifosi The three main victims of last weekend's opening corner shunt at Spa-Francorchamps filled the podium places at the final European round of 2012 at Monza. But for each of them, there was a different story to the race. Hamilton, remained out of reach of everyone for the duration of the race making a solid enough start to fend off an
ambitious lunge from Massa into the Rettifilio and then having the pace to not only pull away from the Ferrari in the early stages, but to create a cushion for when, first, McLaren team-mate Jenson Button, and then
Alonso and Perez took turns in second spot. Hamilton also enjoyed a rapid pitstop, unlike Button who returned to
the track with a bigger gap to his team-mate than he had had a lap previously. From there, although Perez began making inroads into the gap in the closing stages, there was nothing, aside from a mechanical failure, that was going to
deny Hamilton, the 2008 world champion a third win of the year, following his previous successes in Canada and Hungary. Neither of the Red Bull cars could finish the race as both defending champion Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber encountered mechanical problems, forcing them to quit after challenging for a long stint in the race. Paul di Resta earned four points for Sahara Force India, with an eighth place finish but his teammate Nico Hulkenberg had to retire in the dying moments of the race despite a superb drive. Di Resta had qualified fourth but started the race in the ninth position due to a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.
Vauxhall lifts lid on new Cascada Vauxhall today revealed the name and first teaser shots of the Cascada, the first new mid-size convertible built and designed by the company for more than 70 years. Called Cascada, the model is 4.7 metres in length – more than 70mm longer than Audi’s A5 Convertible – with a full-size fabric roof, giving the car a classy and elegant profile, seen in the two official images. The roof can be opened or closed at the touch of a button, even when the car is moving at up to 30mph. While Vauxhall has enjoyed considerable success in the past with open-topped models in the compact class, and has also commissioned opentopped versions of the Cavalier to be built by outside manufacturers, the Cascada is the first mid-size convertible that it has built and designed in-house since before the last war.
One of the last large, cars convertible-bodied Vauxhall built was the iconic OE-type 30-98, which could be specified with the company’s own Velox body. The 30-98 was the UK’s first catalogued 100mph car, and a serious competitor for
Bentley’s 3-litre models in its day. Cascada, a Spanish word meaning waterfall, is the third new name to be introduced by Vauxhall this year, following Mokka and ADAM, and each model is set to be incremental to the

For Lewis Hamilton, there was no sign that the distraction of contract talks were on his mind as he led from start to finish to claim his first Italian GP victory. For Sergio Perez, a timely reminder that he could be the natural successor to Felipe Massa at Ferrari after he turned twelfth on the grid into second at the flag courtesy of a late tyre stop and blistering second half pace. For Fernando Alonso, a podium finish after a tough start to the weekend means that he now enjoys an extended championship lead after both Red Bulls retired and team-mate Felipe Massa again did his bit for the good of the Ferrari team. A tremendous tussle with Vettel halfway through the race forced Alonso on to the grass at the track edge to avoid a collision, Vettel was issued a drivethrough penalty for this bit of over eager driving.

Rory McIlJoy after back to back wins Rory McIlroy, ranked No. 1 in the world, had secured his second title in two weeks and his third in his last four starts with a two-stroke victory in the BMW Championship. McIlroy, 23, is in the kind of zone known to only the rarest of athletes. Rafa Nadal, an 11-time Grand Slam champion, has been there, and so has Tiger Woods, the last golfer to win in back-to-back weeks on the PGA Tour, in August 2009. Since securing his second major title, at the P.G.A. Championship last month, McIlroy has broken 70 in 10 of 12 rounds and is 41 under par in that stretch, including 40 under in the last two
weeks. He closed with a fiveunder-par 67 in this the third leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs to win by two strokes at 20 under, equaling his winning score at the Deutsche Bank Championship. “Just playing with a lot of confidence right now,” McIlroy said. “I’m confident in my ability and confident with the shots that I’m hitting and confident on the greens.” He added, “It’s a nice run to be on, and I want to try to keep it going for as long as possible.” McIlroy spent 40 minutes after his third round working out a few kinks in his swing on the driving range. “I went out and did some
great work on the range last night after I played,” McIlroy said, “and I figured a couple things out.” That’s putting it mildly. He missed one fairway in the final round after missing six during the third round. McIlroy, was paired with England’s Lee Westwood in a final round that felt like a five-hour preview of the coming Ryder Cup between teams from the United States and Europe. Four of Sunday’s first five finishers and six of the top nine are set to represent the United States or Europe in the biennial event at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago starting on September 28th.
A final goodbye to Olympians Hundreds of thousands of people lined the route of a victory parade through London on Monday to cheer Britain's Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Competitors were also honoured with a flypast by the Red Arrows over Buckingham Palace, the day after the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympics. Some 800 competitors travelled on 21 floats which made their way through the
city over two hours. The parade route, starting from Mansion House, was open to all – and many of the athletes on the slow-moving floats expressed surprise at how many people came out to greet them. Six-time gold medalwinning cyclist Sir Chris Hoy said: "I just didn't think it was possible to see so many people out on the streets supporting us ... I want to
say thank you. It's been emotional... If you have to end an Olympic career anywhere this is the place to do it." After the parade, Prime Minister David Cameron expressed his thanks to the athletes – whom he called "the heroes". He told them: "You have given us moments that we will never forget. The whole country salutes your brilliance."
A good turnout of members and guests played at Los Arqueros to find the course surprisingly not in its normal tip-top condition and the low scores reflected that. Saying that, the members would like to thank Wayne of Elite Golf Services for organising the outing and obtaining very competitive green fees. Overcast conditions on the day made the play very comfortable and enjoyable. Nearest the pin hole 16 Mark Edmundson. Nearest the pin in two shots hole 14 Dave Haworth. Longest drive hole 17 Ian Brewer.

Charles van Commenee to step down Charles van Commenee is to step down as UK Athletics head coach after the team failed to meet his own medal target at London 2012. The 54-year-old Dutchman will leave when his contract expires in December. Van Commenee said he would quit unless the team hit a target of at least eight medals in athletics including a minimum of one gold. Despite being widely praised, the team fell two short of that overall, though four of the six medals were gold.
Andy Murray’s fairytale of New York Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better in this momentous summer of sport, Andy Murray added his own peice of history on Monday evening in New York. Murray's U.S. Open triumph makes him the first British man to win a Grand Slam singles crown since Fred Perry captured the 1936 U.S. Championships at Forest Hills. The 25-year-old Scot won the first set (7-6) after a historic 22-point tiebreaker, the longest tiebreak in U.S. Open final history. After breaking Djokovic to win the second

set, 7-5, Murray stood on the precipice of history – but Novak Djokovic is made from stern stuff. After Novak Djokovic had come back from two
sets down to level the match, you began to think here we go again. But this is a new Andy Murray, brimming with confidence after his gold medal winning performance at
the Olympics. This time there was to be no capitulation, with the newfound mental resilience has come greater aggression, a stronger forehand and more unyielding serve. Ivan Lendl has proved to be the catalyst in the changes Murray has had to make to finally fullfil his dream, and the way Murray took the deciding set under such pressure should at last convert the disbelievers once and for all.

Crouch in England exile Peter Crouch is in England exile after the striker refused to be on manager Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 stand-by list. Stoke City's Crouch, 31, was overlooked for the World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine, despite injuries to Wayne Rooney and Andy Carroll depleting Hodgson's resources. Hodgson said: "I selected him for the Euros but he didn't want to come. He made it clear that unless he was in the squad he didn't want to be considered."Crouch, who believes his new partnership with Michael Owen at Stoke could revive his international ambitions, has scored 22 goals in 42 appearances but has not played for England since 2010.

England's hopes of squaring their threematch Twenty20 series against South Africa were thwarted as heavy rain caused the second international to be abandoned. After a delayed start at Old Trafford, Hashim Amla hit an unbeaten 47 off 30 balls to lift South Africa to 77-5 in a match reduced to nine overs per side. England were stuttering on 29-2 off 4.1 overs when a downpour curtailed proceedings, with five overs in the innings required to constitute a match.
