Abu Hamza to be extradited to the US The radical cleric has lost his request to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights to remain in the UK .... P8 NATIONAL NEWS - A FEW SPARKS CAN CAUSE A BLAZING INFERNO
Thousands flee another forest fire Some 2,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes after a forest fire broke out near the village of Chulilla in Valencia on Sunday afternoon, threatening five other villages in the area. Some 800 firefighters and 42 helicopters had the blaze under control by Monday night but not before it had ravaged 5,500 hectares of land. Some of the residents in the area had wanted to stay on to help put out the blaze and the Guardia Civil in charge of the evacuation threatened to arrest them, if it was the only way to get them to safety. It is still not known what started the fire. Spain has just had its driest winter in 70 years which, added to this summer’s high temperatures, put the country at a particularly high risk of forest fires. Fires have destroyed more than 184,000 hectares of land since the beginning of the year, according to the agriculture ministry – the highest amount in a decade. The Valencia region was hit by fires in July, while Malaga suffered one of its worst fires in a decade, affecting six municipalities in the Marbella area and inland. The island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands was particularly hard hit by fires this summer. The Marbella fire was started by two men who left a bonfire smouldering at a finca on the border between Coin and Alhaurin el Grande. Despite repeated information campaigns, land workers continue to light fires to get rid of dead undergrowth with tragic results. People continue to light up

ICKHAM’S
WORLD Great weekend
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
I had a great weekend last weekend. For ages we’ve had our little caravan sitting on our car park - yep, I was the one you were stuck behind on Friday and Sunday! so we thought we’d try out the new campsite in duquesa. I don’t know the area well (always stuck here in the office) so it was nice to visit a place I wasn’t used to. On Friday night we went to Marlows Fish and chip Restaurant that was really within walking distance of the campsite, as they say they have “the best fish and chips you’ll ever eat”. Some claim, eh? However, it really was extremely good fish and chips and I don’t remember the last time I had them as good. And the waitress, Rosemary was lovely too! I have written a review of it on page 16. The campsite, camping la Bella Vista was superb. Everything was clean and state-of-the-art. The loos which, on Spanish sites can be dodgy to say the least, were immaculate, the shop well stocked even though there are shops nearby, the view of the sea and the sound of the waves from the plots were fab and there were fantastic facilities for disabled people including a hoist to get in and out of the pool. now there’s something you wouldn’t normally expect to have been thought of! See the review on page 13. Sadly, it’s back to work and the caravan’s been put away again but we shall certainly be going back for another visit as there’s so much within easy reach to see and do and, of course, more fish and chips and dime cake!

Mas throws down the gauntlet Catalan regional premier Artur Mas set his ruling CiU nationalist coalition on a collision course with Madrid on Monday when he announced a resolution to give Catalans the right to decide on the future of their region, to be discussed in the regional assembly on Tuesday and Wednesday with a view to having it approved on Thursday. The move came in response to Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s rejection of the Catalan leader’s call for fiscal independence last week. During talks in Madrid, Rajoy told Mas that Spain's economic crisis had to be overcome jointly. Mr Mas said he was disappointed and did not rule out early regional elections. He said attempts to “fit Spain and Catalonia together” are “a path without direction”. This week’s resolution asks that “the people of
Catalonia be allowed to freely and democratically decide their collective future” – without specifically mentioning independence. Instead, it emphasises the need for Catalonia to bring about its “national transition”. Referring to Mas’s threat to call early elections in Catalonia, the Partido Popular’s general secretary, Maria Dolores de Cospedal said that such a
move would demonstrate his “political and economic failure”. The Association of Spanish Military Personnel, which is not a registered member of the armed services’ professional associations, has also weighed in with a stark warning that anyone who contributes to the breaking up of Spain should answer to military justice on the “serious charge of high treason”.
Spain "not cycling safe” The death of Víctor Cabedo (right), 23, a cyclist for the Basque Euskaltel team, after he was hit by a car last Wednesday, has once again brought road safety to the fore.
That’s how it seemed on Sunday, when King Juan Carlos arrived in New York to attend former US President Bill Clinton’s Global Initiative. They had a 45-minute meeting before the inauguration of the Initiative during which Clinton assured the King that Spain would survive the current crisis. They also discussed the eurozone crisis, as well as the economic crises in
veered off course on a curve near Almedíjar in Castellon province. Twenty-five professional cyclists in Spain have been killed in road accidents, and the country has the highest number of cycling accidents in Europe.
Cabedo crashed into a vehicle that was reportedly travelling on the wrong side of the road, although the exact circumstances of the accident are still unclear.
Of 3,496 accidents in 2010, 67 were fatal. "We still don't have all the figures from 2011 but they are probably similar to the year before," a Traffic Authority spokesman said. "What we do know is that there have been 35 deaths on the road."
The driver has said he doesn't know whether it was the cyclist or himself that

Italy and Portugal. The King had lunch on Monday with King Abdullah of Jordan before returning to Madrid on Monday evening, just as Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was leaving to make his first speech at the United Nations in New York on Tuesday. He is expected to have a meeting with President Obama before returning to Madrid.
Both professional and hobby riders believe that safety on the roads for cyclists has a lot to do with Spain's driving culture. "There are a lot of drivers who get nervous when cyclists approach," said Pedro Horrillo, a former professional cyclist. "Sometimes they honk at you and they get nervous if you are in front of them. There are people who stay behind a tractor when they can't pass, but they go crazy if they have to follow a cyclist."

Police surround Parliament Around 1,400 anti-riot police officers started taking up their positions around the Parliament building in Madrid on Tuesday morning to stop protesters from surrounding the building at 6 pm. The organisers of the “Occupy Parliament ” have called on several columns of protesters to march to Parliament from different parts of Madrid. They said the marches would be peaceful and would not interrupt the normal parliamentary session. The object was to express their frustration with lawmakers over the cutbacks: “We want the politicians to see our suffering face to face.” Parliament has in fact been cordoned off and protected by the security forces on a lesser scale ever since last summer when the so-called M-15 youth movement occupied the central Puerta del Sol square for weeks to demand solutions from the
then Socialist government for the economic crisis. Similar protests are expected to take place in provincial capitals and cities around the country. On Monday, Partido Popular general secretary María Dolores de Cospedal created a stir when she likened the planned protest to the attempt by Guardia Civil officers during the February 23rd 1981 coup. The Socialist Party’s deputy general secretary Elena Valenzuela reminded Cospedal that “those men were carrying guns, these protesters aren’t”. However, she said she hoped the protest would be carried out “within the limits of the law”. The
general secretaries of the CC.OO. and UGT trade unions, Fernández Toxo y Cándido Méndez, called Cospedales a “pyromaniac” for trying to inflame the situation. By noon on Tuesday, police were stopping buses bringing protesters to Madrid to ask for ID documents in what they described as “routine checks”. However, the buses were not held up for more than a few minutes. Meanwhile, traffic in central Madrid was chaotic as drivers sought alternative routes. One taxi driver told reporters he never goes near the centre now unless a client specifically requests it. A pensioner living in the area said he thought the police
presence was “excessive”. “I have to make an enormous detour to reach my home and I can hardly walk with all this shopping,” he told reporters. Meanwhile, the hotels in the area said the police presence was more damaging than anything else. “They see so many policemen but no protesters and ask if this is a very dangerous area. It’s beginning to drive them

Scotsman due in court over Franco plaque Scotsman Clifford Torrents is due in court this week, charged with removing a plaque bearing the insignia of the Spanish Falange from a fountain without permission. Torrents, who bought a house in the tiny Galician village of Ouviaño in 2009, thought he was complying with the Historical Memory Law – which bans all things related to dictator Francisco Franco when he removed the plaque which bore the inscription: “Francisco Franco reigning and D. José María López being Mayor, this fountain was inaugurated on this day, 25-5-1953.” The 59-year-old Scotsman said he had reached a verbal agreement with a former
Socialist councillor but the new Socialist mayor, José Manuel Braña, told reporters: “This British gentleman has no business removing it without permission.” He added that its removal had not gone down well with Torrents’ nine neighbours, In all, 200 people live in the 23 hamlets of Negueira de Muñiz, of which Ouviaño is one. The mayor now plans to restore the plaque – which he will then have to remove again to comply with the law.

Fresco destroyer is demanding royalties The woman who ruined a prized Jesus Christ fresco in a church near Zaragoza is demanding royalties because her botched restoration became a hit with tourists.
have since visited the church and the airline Ryanair is offering deals to Zaragoza, with the fresco in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church in Borja as the main attraction.
Lawyers for Cecilia Gimenez, who is 82, said any "economic compensation" would go to charities. She made headlines around the world after her do-ityourself restoration left the 19th century fresco of Christ resembling a hairy monkey.
Sra Gimenez took it upon herself to restore the fresco although she claimed afterwards that the parish priest knew what she was doing.
Every year, romanceSecreto.com asks women who they would most like to have an affair with and this year 40 per cent of the women questioned chose real madrid trainer Jose mourinho, even though he rarely smiles in public. But that seems part of his charm – when asked what they most liked about him, the women who opted for him replied: “His quirky character, his grey hairs and the fact that he’s in good shape physically.” Crown Prince Felipe came second, with 20 per cent of the vote, while businessman mario Conde and actor mario Casas tied for third place, with 8 per cent. madrid
PP politicians richer than Socialists The richest members of the current government are the Secretary of State for defence, Pedro arguelles, who is worth €18.1 million (salary and properties), and the Secretary of State for Education, montserrat Gomendio, worth €14.5 million. Prime minister mariano rajoy is worth a paltry €1,200,000. The poorest is Public Works minister ana Pastor who owns property worth €185,000 but has debts amounting to €83,000. Only four members of the last Socialist government topped the million-euro mark, including current leader alfredo Perez rubalcaba, who’s worth €1,272,000. all the rest were way below the million mark.
Professional restorers who were called in to assess the damage believe they can restore the fresco to its original glory.

Under a new German bishops’ decree, the country’s Roman Catholics will be denied the right to Holy Communion or religious burial if they stop paying a special church tax. Those who fail to pay the tax – an extra 8% of their income tax bill – will no longer be considered as Catholics. All Germans who are officially registered as Catholics, Protestants or Jews pay a religious tax of 89% on their annual income tax bill. The levy was introduced in the 19th Century in compensation for the nationalisation of religious property. Catholics make up around 30% of Germany's population but the number of congregants leaving the church swelled to 181,000 in 2010, with the increase blamed on revelations of sexual abuse by German priests. Alarmed by their declining congregations, the bishops were also pushed into action by a case
Mass brawl halts production taiwan-based Foxconn technology, a major supplier for Apple, halted production at a plant in northern china on Sunday after a fight broke out among workers. Police said a "personal dispute" had escalated into an incident involving about 2,000 workers, injuring 40 of them. the plant, which makes electronic components for cars and consumer devices, employs about 79,000 workers. Foxconn said that the dispute did not appear to have been work-related, while unverified messages on the Weibo social networking site said four or five security guards had beaten a worker almost to death – and another said rioting workers had been targeting security guards who had earlier beaten some of their colleagues. itAlY
Police arrest fake pilot involving a retired professor of church law, Hartmut Zapp, who announced in 2007 that he would no longer pay the tax but intended to remain within the Catholic faith. The Freiburg University academic said he wanted to continue praying and receiving Holy Communion
and a lengthy legal case between Professor Zapp and the church reaches the Leipzig Federal Administrative Court this week. "This decree makes clear that one cannot partly leave the Church," Germany's bishops' conference said last week, after the decision which has
been endorsed by the Vatican. But a spokesman for the grassroots Catholic campaign group We are Church said: "This decree at this moment of time is really the wrong signal by the German bishops who know that the Catholic church is in a deep crisis."
Police have arrested a jobless man who posed as an airline pilot, tricking his way into riding in the cockpit of at least one jet. the unnamed man was stopped at turin Airport wearing a pilot's uniform and using forged iD cards. He was charged with endangering air transport security and impersonation. Police said he sat as "third pilot" in the cockpit of an Air Dolomiti plane which flew from Munich to turin in April. Police had long been investigating the suspect, who had allegedly created a fake identity as a lufthansa pilot named Andrea Sirlo, complete with a Facebook page which included fake flight attendant friends. Sirlo is the name of a flight corridor over turin. AFgHAniStAn
Synchronised toilet flushing Many residents of Zimbabwe's second city simultaneously flushed their toilets at 19.30 local time on Sunday, as part of an official attempt to prevent blocked sewage pipes. Bulawayo Mayor Thaba Moyo said the "big flush" would keep pipes wet and so
prevent them getting clogged up, adding that the lack of water in the sewage pipes had already led some to burst. A severe drought and years of poor maintenance have meant Bulawayo residents often go without running water for three days at a time. Most houses in the city possess
toilets which flush, unlike in many African countries, but due to a lack of water, many people have been using buckets of water instead. According to the Associated Press, the synchronised flush will now take place at the same time twice a week – on Mondays
and Thursdays – though residents will of course be able to flush their toilets at other times too. The proposal has had a mixed reception in the city. One resident said: "Our leaders are a joke. What they should be doing is finding money from donors to buy new sewer pipes."
Pakistan newspapers banned +the government is trying to block the entry of all newspapers from Pakistan, alleging that they serve taliban militants. An interior ministry spokesman said the newspapers "are a propaganda resource of the taliban spokesmen" and police forces in three eastern provinces have been ordered to confiscate all copies. the move comes amid increasing tension between the two countries. Pakistan has been shelling the border province of Kunar, killing dozens of civilians, according to Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul. the Un estimates that around 4,000 people have been displaced due to cross-border shelling.

Drones traumatise and terrorise civilians Civilians are being "terrorised" 24 hours a day by CIA drone attacks that target mainly low-level militants in north-west Pakistan, according to a report by Stanford University and New York University's School of Law. It also said rescuers treating the casualties are being killed and wounded by second drone strikes. Earlier this year President Barack Obama insisted the
strategy was "kept on a very tight leash" and that without the drones, the US would have had to resort to "more intrusive military action".
The attacks cause property damage, severe economic hardship and emotional trauma for the injured and their families, the report said.
However, citing "extensive interviews with the local population", the report said children are being taken out of school because of fears of a dronestrike and people are afraid to attend gatherings such as funerals for fear of attack.
London-based human rights group Reprieve, which commissioned the report, said it was taking legal action in an attempt to force the UK government to clarify its policy of sharing intelligence in support of the CIA's drone-strikes.

He will now be extradited to the US with four others, including terror suspect and computer expert Babar Ahmed who was held without trial for eight years on suspicion of raising funds for terrorism, Seyla Talha Ahsan, Adel Abdul Bary and Khaled Al Fawwaz on suspicion of terrorism charges.
Previously the cleric had been jailed in the UK for seven years for soliciting murder and inciting racial hatred.
Hamza wanted to fight a European Court of Human Rights ruling that extradition would not breach his human rights but the unanimous decision from the Court decided that there would be no breach of his human rights either as a result of
The five men are likely to be sent to the US within two or three weeks, it is understood.
Al Fawwaz faces more than 269 counts of murder while Bary and Al Fawaz were indicted, along with al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and 20 others for their alleged support of, or involvement in the bombing of US Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 1998.
The judges said that between 199 and 2006 the men were indicted on various terrorism charges in the US with Hamza being charged with 11 counts of criminal conduct related to the taking of 16
Ahmed and Ahsan are accused of offences including providing support to terrorists and conspiracy to kidnap, maim or injure persons or damage property in a foreign country.
The request for an appeal delayed a total of five cases related to the same judgement.
He was found guilty of assembling a crew to smuggle the cocaine into the country aboard the boat Dances With Waves. The
boat was intercepted 170 miles off the coast of Ireland having set off from Trinidad and stopping off in Venezuela to pick up the cocaine to head for Liverpool. The drugs seizure was one of the largest in Irish history. Crew members Philip Doo, from Devon, and Christopher Wiggins, who had been living on the Costa del Sol were arrested at the time of the seizure. Each were jailed for 10 years for possession of cocaine with intent to supply in 2009.
Matt Horne from the serious Organised Crime Agency described Brooks as a career criminal for 30 years who had travelled extensively using a series of false names, and had been imprisoned on a number of occasions.

Death at Kew high winds and rain lashed Britain over the weekend and a woman was killed in London’s Kew Gardens on Sunday afternoon by a falling branch. The incident at the royal Botanical Gardens occurred as the country prepared for a night that saw high winds and heavy rainfall. There was transport disruption in many areas on Monday morning. The environment agency issued over 50 flood warnings as over two inches of rain fell in parts of the South West, and on Tuesday it was reported that some residents had to be evacuated in Morpeth, northumberland as a precaution.

Girl of 15 runs off with teacher Megan Stammers, 15, has sparked a huge manhunt after apparently running off with her 30-year-old maths teacher and part-time musician who has posted some of his work on YouTube, Jeremy Forrest. She failed to turn up at Bishop Bell Church of England School in Eastbourne, East Sussex, on Friday and hours later it was found that she had crossed from Dover to Calais on the 9:20pm ferry in Mr Forrest’s black Ford Fiesta that was caught on CCTV. Police have admitted that the pair could be anywhere in Europe by now.
Yesterday, Tuesday, it was revealed that police had been working closely with the school and the girl’s parents following concerns that the pair were allegedly having an affair. Other pupils are said to have warned the staff at Bishop Bell school in Eastbourne after they were spotted holding hands whilst on a five-day school trip to Los Angeles seven months ago and had sat together on the aircraft on the return journey. Police have confirmed that the schoolgirl is not believed to be in danger. The last known contact

End of recession in sight? There is increasing evidence that the economy is improving in Britain and that the end of the recession is in sight, in spite of lingering problems in the Eurozone. Public finances remain a problem with August borrowing hitting an August high of £14.4 billion, impacting on Chancellor George Osborne’s attempts to cut the deficit. But the good news is that a £80 billion fund is finally
allowing businesses to borrow again and on the jobs front progress continues to be made. It is believed two jobs are now being created in the private sector for every job being lost in the public sector and National Insurance contributions are up 5 per cent on last year. There is a general view that the recession has bottomed out and that progress can now be made. Industrial production has
picked up and there was a reduced trade deficit in July. Value added tax revenue on sales of goods is running 3 per cent up year-on-year. The progress being made has to be looked at in context as outside influences can have an adverse effect. Weakness in Europe, a major market for Britain, and movement in the oil price are both external factors that pose a threat.

Taxi drivers reveal fare fiddling The Marbella taxi drivers’ association, Taxisol, has contacted a local newspaper to denounce the fact that several taxistas are ignoring the fares agreed on by the collective. Of the 319 taxi drivers working in Marbella, 270 belong to the association. Spokesman Cristobal Toro said not too many drivers were ignoring the fares which were published in the Regional Official Gazette but added that he had received complaints from both tourists and residents “which gives the town a bad image”. He called on the local authorities to take action whenever a fare abuse is reported. Councillor Felix Romero, who is in charge of transport matters, said there had not been an “avalanche” of complaints but enough to give cause

Youth workers rescue green area Fifty unemployed youths under the age of 25 have cleaned up the green area between la bateria park and Carlota alessandri avenue. all belong to the el mirador school-workshop where they are learning a series of skills, including gardening, installation of solar panels and artistic ironwork as well as how to rescue neglected areas. The green area in question was cleaned up over a period of two years. The youths were paid €9 a day worked during the first six months of training and a minimum wage of €150 for the remaining 18 months. The project cost €1,570,000 – the Junta de andalucia paid €1,430,000 and the local council paid the rest. The weathermen say the cyclone will keep to the west of the Canary Islands until Friday at least. The rainfall – the first in the province since May 20th – will be moderate and the Malaga Meteorological Office does not expect to have to declare states of emergency anywhere in the province. Rain was forecast for two days last week but never showed.

Recovering from the fire The municipal Socialist Group has asked the Costa del Sol Tourism Office to carry out a campaign to promote the municipalities affected by august’s fire. Spokesman ricardo lópez said billboards could be installed all along the coast highlighting the “most beautiful parts” of the municipalities that were not destroyed by the fire as a way of attracting tourists to those areas. He said figures showed that tourists tended to concentrate in towns with more than 50,000 inhabitants and it was necessary to encourage them to visit smaller towns, with the resulting economic benefits.

Pretty kettle of fish
Rajoy's challenges
T
T
he Catalans have finally gone over the top. After Catalan regional premier Artur Mas failed last week to convince Mariano Rajoy to accept a new financing plan to give more funding to his cash-strapped region, he stomped back to Barcelona threatening – independence now!
I
n my opinion, this is just a ploy to win the next regional election for his party – Convergencia y Union (CiU) – which has governed Catalonia for 26 years since 1980 when the regional governments were created – with a break of six years when the Socialists governed in coalition with the worst elements of Catalan nationalism. There’s a small, very vocal conglomeration of parties and groups who call themselves “independentistas”, who want independence from Spain like yesterday. Artur Mas knows full well that a majority of Catalans don’t want separation from Spain but he’s pandering to the independence crowd – making it look bigger than it is – in the hope of frightening Madrid into giving more money, rights and privileges to Catalonia.
T
his week the Catalan regional parliament is going to debate a rightto-decide resolution on the future of the region without actually mentioning the word “independence”. Socialist leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba on Monday talked about studying the possibility of turning Spain into a federation of states along the lines of Germany, which would keep Catalonia in Spain. Partido Popular general secretary María Dolores de Cospedal immediately dismissed the idea as extremely irresponsible, warning the Socialists that “if they want to tear up the Constitution they will find the PP standing in their way”. Meanwhile, the Association of Spanish Military Personnel, which is not a registered member of the armed services’ professional associations, weighed in with a stark warning that anyone who contributes to the breaking up of the Spanish state should be tried for high treason. I’ve been saying for years that the Madrid government should allow the Catalans to hold a referendum – as allowed by the Constitution – along the lines of the one held in Quebec on secession from Canada on October 30th, 1995. Both sides had agreed to respect the results no matter how close they were. And it was very close – 49.42 per cent said "Yes" and 50.58 per cent said "No".
T
he pros and cons of independence from Canada had been openly debated for months before the
referendum was held and if that happened here, a vast majority would probably vote against independence from Spain – something Artur Mas and the independentistas know full well. The current CiU regional government has recently asked the Madrid government for a bailout of €4,000 million, while implementing spending cuts that are so savage they make Rajoy’s cuts look like child’s play. The economic experts say that an independent Catalonia would end up with a bigger national debt than Greece – something the regional government is keeping quiet about. Then there’s the question of EU membership. EU officials have said repeatedly in the past the an independent Catalonia would have to go to the end of the queue of those nations applying for membership – something the current regional government blithely forgets to mention. As a non-EU-member country, an independent Catalonia would have to find a new currency – and I haven’t the vaguest idea about what they would call it. Hating and despising everything Spanish, they couldn’t very well go back to the peseta. How could a newlyindependent country that is starting out bankrupt afford the cost of creating a new currency? Then we have the Spanish equivalent of the Confederation of British industry – whose chairman just happens to be a Catalan – saying independence for the region would be a disaster businesswise, just a few days after several multinational companies said they would pull out of an independent Catalonia.
A
nd now we come to something very close to the average Catalan’s heart. How would independence from Spain affect Barcelona football club? Just a couple of days ago, I heard some Catalan twit say on television that Barça would have the same relationship with the Spanish football federation as Monaco had with the French federation – that is, still stay in the system. While the eternal fight between Real Madrid and Barça makes Spanish football so fascinating, I suspect the rest of the country’s football clubs would be only too happy to say goodbye to the Catalans – who’ve been hogging the top of the League along with Real Madrid for years. I can just hear them saying – give us a chance – as Barça floats out into the stratosphere, having no club of any note worth playing against in an independent Catalonia.
A
s a Real Madrid supporter I can’t wait for that day – although I doubt it will ever happen.
he question of whether Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will ask for a bailout for Spain most certainly hinges on the upcoming elections in Galicia and the Basque Country. However, there are some within his Partido Popular who believe that this government won’t need further money other than the €100 billion the European Commission offered to recapitalise Spanish banks. When Rajoy says that he is in constant contact with European leaders discussing what conditions may be linked to the bailout, he is not only pondering whether Spain should seek help but also looking at alternatives to a handout. It would be a political disaster for the PP should Rajoy decide to seek a financial aid package. The Portuguese and Greek governments didn’t survive their own humiliating bailout schemes, and Rajoy pretty much knows that his administration may be threatened.
B
ut trying to recover that confidence is a difficult thing. What the Spanish government can do is make it simpler for industry to enter partnerships with regional administrations to buoy up public works projects related to infrastructure and even tourism. We are seeing this being done with Madrid’s opportunity to host EuroVegas, although we are not too clear what laws and regulations will be relaxed to make it easier for the mega-casino project to get off the ground. For what it is worth, and there are people who don’t want a massive sin city built in their backyard, EuroVegas is going to be a showcase model for government and private sector partnerships. This is what Spain needs to mirror in other regions, whether it’s entertainment or service industries.
A
s Reuters pointed out on Monday, “Dublin and Lisbon fought shy of EU and IMF help for long months in 2010-11, fuelling turmoil in the bond markets, in forlorn attempts to avoid a humiliating loss of sovereignty and lenders' demands that they draft unpopular budgets. Now Rajoy, in office for nine months, is doing the reverse of what his Spanish predecessors urged on others, and insisting Madrid may not need help – at any rate not right now.”
W
hat Spain needs is not a European financial rescue plan but instead a private sector programme in which the government can look for business partners to stimulate the economy and focus on putting people back to work. There are many infrastructure projects that can be developed through a partnership with local industry. This might prove more beneficial than coming up with a plan to reform the economy through a painful money package that would only put more debt on the backs of Spanish citizens. But the problem here remains in investor confidence.
O
n Friday, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble said he didn’t think that Spain would need an additional aid other than the banking recapitalisation package. “What Spain needs is to recover the confidence of the financial markets, and there Spain really has a problem,” he said.
Mariano Rajoy
R
ajoy is keen on finding solutions to Spain’s economic woes, but those results may not come so fast. In the meantime, the prime minister appears more concerned about winning the regional elections in Galicia and the Basque Country, and he may have to wrestle through another vote if the Catalan CiU nationalist bloc decides to call an early race to pro**p up the coalition’s separatist cause. The domestic political problems are providing Rajoy with the type of fodder he really doesn’t need at the present. But in due time there will be further responses to any disruptions to the Spanish scheme of things in Catalonia, as well as a response to Spain’s own marketability among investors.

Fed up with same old, same old? Last weekend we decided to do something dierent... We have a small caravan – just for two people – that we haven’t used for some three years due to pressure of work. We would just pop into it every so often to make sure it was still clean and tidy and that there had been no unforeseen leaks. We kept looking at it thinking what good times we had enjoyed in it so, last Friday decided that, as we had a free weekend, why not take it down to the new campsite in Duquesa for a try-out. We have been to a few sites in Spain and with the exception of one in Conil de la Frontera and a couple in Tarifa, they are very scrubby, with shale instead of grass on ground that isn’t very nice and with fairly unsavoury loo and shower blocks. I had found this most disappointing as we were used to the standards of England, France, Holland and Belgium where you would very rarely find a dirty loo and the campsites were a pleasure to be on. Camping Bella Vista recently opened and, quite frankly, the owners must have spent a fortune on it! The pitches for caravans and tents are very spacious indeed at 10 metres x 12 metres – that’s 120m2 pitches that are double a lot of the campsites you go to in Spain – and will take a motorhome the size of a Winnebego with room for chairs, tables and all your cooking facilities you may
want to put out on your “gardenâ€? as well. Each pitch has its own 16 and 22 volt electricity supply, plus its own water supply which means that, unlike on most camping and caravan sites you don’t have to lug a water container half a mile for your own use. There are pitches with or without shading (extra shaded pitches costs just â‚Ź4 a day so you can keep cool all through the summer too if you want). Access to the site is easy whatever size motorhome or caravan you have. The roads within the site are wide enough to back in even the largest motorhome – all designed by the owner who has had many sites previously to base his designs on. There’s nothing worse than turning up for your well-earned break and finding it’s virtually impossible to get through tiny entrances and not be able to turn round without hitting a post or, worse still, someone else’s caravan! Facilities-wise, Camping Bella Vista must be one of the best in Spain. The administration area houses the offices, plus an airy reception and the inviting campsite shop that has been stocked with a large range of wines, drinks, snacks and food, plus accessories and parts that you may need for your motorhome, caravan or tent. They also sell items for sunbathing such as sunscreen that you will need if you’ve forgotten to bring yours with you for sitting around your van or the pool area. The campsite also has a modern cafĂŠ area, a very nice restaurant and a lovely terrace shaded by coloured sails. The menu is

international and varied, as is the wine and drinks list, or you could just have drinks from the bar on the terrace. Camping Bella Vista has direct access to the paseo and then onto the beach so, no busy roads to cross with children or people less able to cross roads and bridges. You are within around 5 minutes walk to the nearest off-site restaurants and bars, with Marlows Fish and Chip restaurant within that timing. A little further at about 15 minutes walk along the seafront you’ll find Duquesa Port with all it’s boats to look at plus shops and lots of restaurants to choose from. Further afield, Gibraltar takes about 25 minutes to get to by car and Estepona is about 15 minutes. Sabinillas is around 5 minutes with their bars, restaurants and shops. For disabled people, the site is an absolute find. Absolutely all areas are accessible and there’s even a chair lift to get in and out of the swimming pool. Cost-wise, a caravan, camper or motorhome with an awning and two people will cost you â‚Ź26 per night including water at this time of year. you can leave your mobile home or caravan there allyear-round if you find it more convenient. I would thoroughly recommend this site as one of the best I’ve ever stayed at and certainly the best I’ve stayed at in Spain. So, why not do something different? It’s cheaper than a hotel but with all the advantages of being able to eat out at good restaurants and traditional cafĂŠs and ventas while also having your own cooking facilities if you fancy “eating inâ€?. If you don’t have a motorhome or caravan, there are places that sell new and second hand ones, or a brand new tent will not break the bank and is fun for all the family. You can book your stay at camping Bella Vista by calling 952890020 and they speak English if you don’t speak Spanish. Written by Kym Wickham

Community Workers – The majority of Age Concern’s activity involves working with older people in the community – from visiting to taking people to hospital. More volunteers are needed for this field work across the charity’s area of operation from Marbella to Sotogrande. In particular people willing to drive clients are urgently needed. If you are interested in any of the above and are willing to join the current band of volunteers why not give Eileen a call on 608 458 555 for more information.

So now you have the puppies... At six weeks, they are ready for vaccinations and worming x 10 Costs Money. Now they are healthy and ready to go and you are exhausted. Where are all the people who promised to help you in the middle of the night? You go to see a breeder for an opinion on price and quality. You want the truth, so the breeder gives it to you. The big male has only one testicle (drop in value –-not showable). The next biggest male toes out (but he does have both testicles). The really pretty bitch has an undershot jaw (can't show that). The bitch with the nice head is cow hocked. The smaller bitch is not cow hocked but has a weak back. One of the boys has blue eyes (how did that happen?).
There are three nice puppies, but not really outstanding. There is one outstanding puppy who is show quality. The show quality puppy is the one you are going to have to keep because the children like it best –another mouth to feed, not to mention your disappointment with the litter. It has not really contributed to the breed, has it? But, you're told to cheer up –-after all, one show puppy is better than none at all and you should consider yourself as successfully breeding a litter. Not much consolation when all were going to be show quality. Now you have your litter graded and priced accordingly, ready to sell them. By this time, are you knowledgeable enough about the breed to be the expert that the buyer assumes you are?
Are you prepared to answer questions on training, housebreaking, grooming, and feeding? Are you prepared to answer these questions at the time of the sale and for months afterward, in the middle of the night, because one of the dogs you sold has stopped eating? Can you direct your buyers to obedience classes, help them into the show ring, recommend a local vet or dog groomer? Remember: You are now a dog breeder and your responsibility does not end when the dog leaves with its new owner. .... more next week! Cudeca raise €30,000! Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice held its special 20th anniversary charity concert at the Teatro Cervantes in Malaga, with the international Latin Jazz pianist, Chucho Valdés and the famous flamenco jazz singer, Concha Buika last Wednesday, 19th September for the 6th year running. Chucho Valdés, winner of eight Grammy Awards, promoted this very special event and asked his friend, Concha Buika to come along especially from a concert in Moscow to accompany him on this evening and support Cudeca. Together they won a Grammy for best Latin album 2010 with "El Ultimo Trago". This event was made possible thanks to the Málaga Town Hall, the Cervantes Theatre, Unicaja
Obra Social, Fundación CEM, ESIC Business School, Clinica Buchinger, Cadena Ser, 340TV, CSC Grupo Sanidad, Isoluz and Diario Sur, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. The Hospice also had the support of the renowned Spanish presenter, Domi del Postigo, who hosted the evening as master of ceremonies, and devoted many caring words of support for Cudeca. Thanks to ticket sales and sponsorships, they managed to reach their target by raising an impressive €30,000 , which will enable Cudeca to continue caring for more than 750 people with advanced and non-curable illnesses and support to their families.

It’s succulent, flakey and moist without being wet and the batter is crisp right through – no soggy middle bit at Marlows – just perfect. They are experts in fish and chips and theirs is simply one of the best fish and chip dinners you’ll ever eat.
Marlow's have over 50 years in the frying trade and were the first to put fish and chips on Gibraltar back in 1966, founding the Irish Town Fisheries. And in their Yorkshire home town they were voted Fish & Chip Shop of the Year1997 for their flagship restaurant in north Leeds. The restaurant in Duquesa is run by husband and wife team Steven and Debbie Marlow ably assisted by their friendly and helpful staff.
You can choose from small, medium, and giant cod or haddock, or medium and large plaice. Or why not try their scampi? Their in-house chips prepared on state-ofthe-art equipment means that the chips you get remind you of how a really good chip should be – crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and hot – not some soggy, oily, limp extruded bit of so-called potato that so often seems to be the favoured way of serving them here in Spain. And if you’re not a chip person you can always choose to have their leek mash as an

Your Weekly Entertainment Guide OUT & ABOUT Econ Winter Pool in your local Party! WEDNESDAY, September 26th 2012
18 n Out & About
Summer is drawing closer to winter, days are shorter, none of us are getting any younger and the telly is still far from spectacular, so what to do? Why not join in a well organised weekly pool league? The Econ Winter Pool League is a very well organised league right here in Fuengirola. Already in its 4th year the Econ Pool League offers cash prizes and good trophies and great snacks. There are no weekly subs and the presentation night is always held in the winning team’s bar. On top of that there is an easy to follow up-to-date website and plenty of back up, with results picked up and delivered, published online, on-mobile and in The News while they are still fresh and relevant.
Of course you do need a pool table. It makes no difference if it's your own table, from another table supplier or an Econ pool table. Even if you are already in another pool league, this league is open to all and you’re all welcome to join in. For bar owners it's a good way to put a few extra chums on seats during the winter months. For the players the league is easy going, a lot of fun over a few beers and a chance to show off your skills and make some new contacts. e World’s Largest Coffee Morning On September 28th – this Friday – the Largest Coffee Morning In The World is taking place to raise funds for McMillan Cancer Care and Cudeca, here in Spain. The event starts at 11:30am and, in the Sabinillas area O’Callaghans in the Orange Square will also be having a sale of “nearly new” clothing to browse through and pick up a bargain, plus raffles. For more details on the Sabinillas venue call Cath Robinson on 952 893 360 or 678 050 832. There will, of course, be other coffee mornings in other areas so, pop into your local bar, or ask your friends if they know where the nearest one to you is – better still, why not organise one yourself? One in three of us will get cancer and it’s the toughest fight most of us will ever face. If you or a loved one has been
diagnosed with cancer, you’ll want a team of people in your corner supporting you every step of the way. And in the UK Macmillan’s ambition is to reach and improve the lives of everyone affected by cancer, by providing them with medical, emotional, practical and financial support. In Spain, it is the job of Cudeca that desperately need funds in order to keep going. That’s why they need your help. By making time to get together at a Coffee Morning and raising money for Cudeca and Macmillan, you’ll be making time for them to help families affected by cancer. If you can’t host or go along to an event, you can still help. To donate, just go to www. cudeca.org or www. macmillan.org.uk/ maketime.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
HOPE SPRINGS Directed by Peter Lord Voices: Hugh Grant, David Tennant, Jeremy Piven It's unlikely that Meryl Streep will add to her Oscar nomination tally of 17 with this performance in a sex comedy but she and Tommy Lee Jones have a wonderful time in a movie that showcases the skills of two formidable stars. And it makes a great change from the juvenile gross out comedies that are churned out by studios. The film reunites Streep with her The Devil Wears Prada director Frankel and has a very different emphasis from her last foray into sex comedy, the very popular It's Complicated. In that she discovered that there was still a spark between her and ex husband Alec Baldwin. Here she plays
Kay, who has to face up to the brutal truth that after 31 years of marriage the flames of passion are truly extinguished. Husband Arnold (Lee Jones in fine grumpy form) sits behind his newspaper at breakfast, falls asleep in front of the TV each night and heads off to his own bedroom. He rejects Kay's attempts at affection by telling her they are no longer in their 20s. So, just a normal suburban late middleaged couple. But Kay decides she wants to breathe fresh life into their stagnant marriage and decides to see if counselling with the famous Dr Feld (Carell) can possibly re-ignite the flame.
Arnold doesn't want to go of course but is beaten into submission, and there are a lot of laughs as he is forced into talking about things he really does not want to by Dr Feld – a restrained comedic performance from Carell. It's funny with some thoughtful insights into mature relationships without brooding too deeply on how cruel and hurtful the thoughtless Arnold is really being. There are some scenes in which Streep is seen in a whole new light – and rather casts a question mark against the 12A rating so beware! You will have a completely fresh view about bananas.

THE HUNGER GAMES Starring: Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Lawrence. The sci-fi thriller The Hunger Games, based on the best-selling epic novels, is set in the ruins of what was once North America. Every year the Capitol of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in The Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which these 24 "Tributes" must fight with
one another until one survivor remains. When her adored little sister is picked to compete, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers in her place. Pitted against highlytrained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson). If she's ever to return
home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

You have an ability this week to see someone with more clarity so that you can make the necessary corrections or adjustments needed. This will enable you to be far more focused on where you are headed and who is on board. Once the confusion clears decisive action is easy. The focus for you is still on getting your house in order, maintaining discipline and keeping to the path and above all harmonising your relationships with others. Watch your words this week as some things you say could be taken the wrong way or blown out of proportion These are unpredictable times for you and the future is looking slightly cloudy and uncertain. You may have to curb the temptation of being too bold as there will be a tendency to go too far or push the limits of what is actually possible. Take the middle road, think twice and things will potter along nicely. Change is in the air and no matter how unsettled this makes you feel you ultimately know it will do you the world of good. Some sort of emotional epiphany overcomes you and gives you an opportunity to speak your mind and find the necessary strength to get back in contact with yourself. You are creating the emotional stability you require, inside of you, instead of looking to others and situations to provide it for you. There is something good that is emerging out of a recent struggle – things will improve. You have reached a turning point with regard to one of your key relationships, breakthroughs are possible, and although nothing happens overnight you are likely to find that a certain trust is being re-established. You have the upper hand now and you can get exactly what you need if you put your intention into play. Be honest with yourself that is all you have to do. You will be feeling feisty and potentially a bit combative as you find yourself fighting for something in a brand new way and with a surprising verbal confidence. Not only will you be surprising yourself, you will be surprising all who know you and thought they knew you well. The old you has been laid to rest and this new you seems to have a greater confident way of getting points across, your communication skills are increasing daily.
This is an emotionally turbulent week and what doesn’t help is the misinformation you are getting. Something occurs that makes you feel compassion and you will want to do all you can to help the situation. Something has been going along for far too long in such a way that does not support what you want to do; perhaps you have become distracted and have been pulled off course? There is no time like the present for getting on with things – so focus on any incomplete projects. Fuse Spanish paprika-flavoured sausage with Italian rice to create a simple yet indulgent dish with a bit of spice.
Chorizo & broad bean risotto Ingredients:
serves 4
• 1 tbsp olive oil • 100g smoked bacon , diced • 2 shallots , chopped • 2 garlic cloves , crushed • 350g small cooking chorizo • • •
sliced into 8mm pieces 300g risotto rice 1litre hot chicken stock 300g frozen broad beans
Directions Preparation and cooking times: Prep 10 mins / Cook 30 mins 1. Heat the oil in a medium-sized pan, then add the bacon, shallots, garlic and chorizo. Gently cook for 8 mins, stirring occasionally so everything cooks evenly. 2. Stir in the rice, coating all over with the cooking juices in the pan. Add just enough stock to cover the rice, bring to a simmer and gently cook until all the liquid is absorbed. 3. Continue adding the stock a ladleful at a time, and gently cook. Just before the final
ladleful of stock, add the broad beans and stir through, cooking for 3-4 mins until tender. CHORIZO This Spanish sausage comes in both fresh and dried varieties. The fresh are perfect for cooking, and the dried, which don't necessarily need cooking, can be eaten as tapas. Chorizo gets its distinctive flavour from smoked paprika and can be either dulce (sweet) or picante (spicy).

August 23rd September 22nd
Your powers of attraction are sky high this week, charisma, charm and lady luck are all in your corner. This week face challenges head on but keep in mind you still need to plan for the future so keep some things on hold as you may need them in the coming weeks. This is a good time to resolve any issues you may have with others that are lingering on, partnerships, lovers or marriages are crying out for some of your attention.
I'm sure when I was a kid there were actresses. What was Marilyn Monroe? She was an actress. So, when did the English language decide that, whether you were male or female, you were an actor? I see no sense in it. It makes it seem that there is something less valid in the female role. Eventually, will the powers that be decide that they want to do away other female words such as "duchess"? What will we call Kate then? I am very happy to say that no such ideas come into the Spanish language. Antonio Banderas es actor Antonio Banderas is an actor Penelope Cruz es actriz Penelope Cruz is an actress. Two weeks ago we looked at words which change gender by changing the final letter Abuelo grand-father, Abuela grand-mother, but this week we will look at some words which have a different form for the different gender. Some are instantly recognisable as the male/female forms of each other (actor/actriz) while others (Toro-bull/Vaca-cow) use completely different words. A duke is un duque and a duchess is una duquesa A hero is un héroe and a heroine is una heroína The prince - el principe the princess - la princesa
CAPRICORN You will be asked to go further than you have ever gone before but instead of feeling limited and confined by the experience you could likely feel empowered and alive by the challenge. It is all about maintaining a perfect balance within your relationship world where communication has suffered in December 22nd - the past, deep discussions are likely to take place as a counteracting force. January 19th Take the time to be sure you and others are all thinking on the same page.
AQUARIUS

PISCES
February 19th March 20th
All fairly straight-forward. However, there are some commonly used words where the male/female equivalents are completely different. Think of a horse. Most people know it is un caballo. But if you want to talk specifically about a female horse, don't make the mistake of changing the "o" to an "a" because una caballa is a mackrel(fish). To say the mare you need a completely different word la yegua. Another similar pair is the son-in-law el yerno and the daughter-in-law la nuera.
You probably have a desire to fight for justice, for the rights of yourself or another, to the very end. Just when you thought you could not go another inch it all breaks loose. Someone will remind you of your unique gifts and of your rare value either to them or to a group. It would be wise to make an action plan at the start of the week, knowing what needs to be done and in what order and then take action, the more you do the more energetic you will feel.
My husband is mi marido but my wife is mi mujer. (Remember mujer also means woman) There is another word for wife - esposa - but it tends to be used more in South America. All part of the sometimes confusing, rich tapestry of language learning.
Unfortunately you don't get to pick who will be the ones that play the major roles in your life, nor can you force things to happen. A repeating habit wrapped with a positive push can alter the way you walk in the world if you simply fake it until you make it, as in saying the words that create a better feeling of emotion, when confronted with a cyclic situation. You are sowing the seeds for long term growth and abundance surrounding your personal relationships with others.
And for anyone in the Coin area, we have a new language course starting this week.
Hasta la próxima - Until next time. Valerie.

e EMMYS took place last weekend
And a British actor won Lead Actor … and Outstanding Support Actress in a Drama Series Last weekend saw the EMMY’s taking place and the Brits did none too badly again. Damian Lewis and Dame Maggie Smith (both pictured, right) emerged as the big British winners – although Downton Abbey did not take them by storm as it did last year. Lewis beat fellow Brit Hugh Bonneville, Steve Buscemi and Jon Hamm to win Outstanding Lead Actor for his widely-praised portrayal of Sgt Nick Brody in the espionage thriller Homeland. The star, born in St. John’s Wood, London, hailed a "golden age" of television during his acceptance speech at the ceremony in Los Angeles. "I'm one of those pesky Brits, I apologise. I don't really believe in judging art, but I thought I'd show up just in case," he said. "What an extraordinary honour to be in a category with these golden actors setting a gold standard in acting in a golden age of TV.” Lewis' co-star Claire Danes picked up the award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of
mentally disturbed FBI agent Carrie Mathison. Homeland also beat Downton Abbey, Mad Men and Breaking Bad, among others, to win the award for the Best Drama Series. The show, said to be one of President Barack Obama's favourite TV programmes, was the big winner on the night with six gongs in total. Veteran actress Dame Maggie Smith saw off competition from Downton Abbey co-star Joanne Froggatt and Mad Men's Christina Hendricks to win Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as the Dowager Countess of Grantham. Julia Louis-Dreyfus took home the gong for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for US show Veep. Screen veteran Emma Thompson, who was nominated for her performance in The Song Of Lunch was beaten to the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a mini-series or a movie by Hollywood actress Julianne Moore, who won the prize for her uncanny portrayal of Sarah Palin in Game
Change. "I feel so validated because Sarah Palin gave me a big thumbs down," Moore said as she picked up her award.

This is one of the ethics and rules of palmistry for any form of divination. Remember, your hands will grow and change just as we all grow and learn. Nothing ever stays the same and it’s never too late to learn something new. Palmistry will fascinate you and your friends and could well be a fascinating hobby for you. It is a fascinating subject and I hope you enjoyed this small journey so, for now, I send you all love and many blessings. Swiss reject Four distinct Gene flaw linked to low full ban on types of breast cancer back pain smoking Voters in Switzerland have rejected a total ban on smoking in enclosed public places at a referendum held on Sunday. Currently, hotels, restaurants and bars are allowed rooms for smokers but critics claim workers' health is at risk. Restrictions introduced two years ago were watered down after lobbying from the catering trade and tobacco firms. In some cantons, more than 70% of voters rejected the ban, according to Geneva newspaper La Tribune de Geneve. Geneva itself bucked the trend by supporting the ban by 52% to 48%. The result was welcomed by the Swiss Business Federation which called it "heartening". In a statement, it said: "The initiative would have imposed more costs on restaurateurs who have already made considerable investments to protect non-smokers." Swiss hotel association Hotelleriesuisse said it was relieved by the outcome. It said a "yes" vote would have made "some investments obsolete".
protection against passive smoking would have "incontestably been a major step in the improvement of workers' conditions". La Tribune de Geneve suggests voters rejected a full ban because they did not want to force the smaller cantons into changing their local laws, and because of resentment at perceived state interference in people's lives.

For now, despite the tantalizing possibilities, patients will have to wait for clinical trials to see whether drugs that block the genetic aberrations can stop the cancers. And it could be a vast undertaking to get all the drug testing done. Because there are so many different ways a breast cancer cell can go awry, there may have to be dozens of drug studies, each focusing on a different genetic change.
Experts said finding the gene could lead to new treatments being developed. The researchers, funded by the Wellcome Trust and Arthritis Research UK, said more research is now needed to find out how the gene influences the

Even within the four major types of breast cancer, individual tumours appear to be driven by their own sets of genetic changes. A wide variety of drugs will most likely need to be developed to tailor medicines to individual tumours.

In the first comprehensive genetic analysis of breast cancer, US researchers have identified four genetically distinct types. Their findings are expected to lead to new treatments with drugs already approved for cancers in other parts of the body and new ideas for more precise treatments aimed at genetic aberrations that now have no known treatment.
condition. They added that once the mechanism is fully understood, their finding could lead to the development of new treatments of lower back pain. A spokesman for Arthritis Research UK said: "Lumbar disc degeneration is a common cause of lower back pain, and it's known that up to 80% of cases have a genetic basis, but this is the first time a gene has been identified as linked to this often painful and disabling condition.” He added: "It's a promising start and provides us with the first clue to the genetic basis of this condition, and with further research, may potentially lead to the development of more effective treatments."

Scientists have identified a gene flaw linked to disc problems that are a common cause of lower back pain. The UK study looked at 4,600 people and found the PARK2 gene was linked to age-related disc problems. A third of middleaged women have problems with at least one spinal disc and the condition is known to be inherited in up to 80% of patients.

Mrs R V Nedelec I would like to comment on Mr. G Scott of Fuengirola (19. 9. 2012) e-mail. Mr. Scott, how delighted I am to have read your comment. It is a marvel. I have wanted to write many times but friends from all nationalities and walks of life advised me not to, first
because I am not English or British, and secondly because hardly anything is ever published against these statements written by people or staff. In spite of all, Blair, Cameron and Clegg were in Spain being protected by a Spanish escort. They had their own
Name supplied By chance I happened to read an article posted by Gill Scott in the Opinion Column dated September 19th 2012. Is he some nutcase? Everything stated by him can be torn to pieces but I will not waste time or too much print regarding this matter. Firstly, it’s an English newspaper for English people and if as stated he has lived here for 46 years, then one would assume he must be familiar with speaking and reading Spanish newspapers or watching Spanish T.V. regarding information about Spanish Paralympics. Secondly. His assumption that in Ms. Pilkington’s column ie; “everyone’s entitled to my own opinion” is a correct term and would not be criminally prosecutable as it is called freedom of speech (has Gill Scott been to Speakers Corner in London?). As for white

ago brought money and prosperity into Spain, which until but a short few years ago had been classed as a third world country. They say if you sit in the sun too long it affects the brain, please Gill, wear a hat or something. I’ve lived here in Spain for 18 years and do not speak the lingo or wish to learn it; we had enough Spaniards living in London if I wished to learn. (By the way Gill, the Spanish living in London also speak Spanish and not English due to living with other Spaniards). I came here to retire like many other Brits, to live in a warm climate, and to spend my hard earned pension money to help the Spanish debt. Please place under A RESPONSE. No name and no time to reply to other, very busy sitting in the shade with a hat on.
But it does not excuse the irresponsible behaviour of people who clearly cannot be bothered to neuter their animals (despite there being help from charities like CHAIN) and who choose to dump puppies fully expecting somebody else to pick up the pieces. An English family living in Villafranco with rescue dogs of their own which are well cared for were shocked to discover not one, not two, not three but FIVE mastin style puppies dumped in the lane near their

Shine on Harvest Moon I
n ancient times, before calendars were invented, the people divided the year up into full moons. Generally there are twelve full moons in a year and each full moon was given a different name. These names varied across the different cultures but the full moon that appeared closest to the autumn equinox was christened the Harvest Moon.
T
he autumn equinox is when the Earth experiences 12 hours of daytime and twelve hours of night. This year the equinox occurred last Saturday 22nd September. From now until the spring equinox on March 21st the nights will be longer than the days in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa for the Southern Hemisphere.
S
SOS Animal Charity All the animal charities firmly support neutering both cats and dogs. At a time of economic difficulty it's hard enough feeding and caring for the existing animals, both in refuges and at home, so having to take on board several more mouths to feed can be difficult, we know.
By Ken Campbell
The next full moon on Saturday night (30th September) has a special name. It is called The Harvest Moon and is slightly different to other full moons.
by email South Africa, (depending which part of Africa he is talking about) a nation that was once self-sufficient and a bread basket to the World under white supremacy, it is now a nation of starving people under black supremacy. Thirdly. Gill Scott states that under Mr. Delfin’s section column he, Gill Scott, has lived in Spain for 46 years. Could he please explain why he has seen 200 years of improvement in 46 years in the time he has lived in Spain? Could it have been the influx of foreign money, mostly British, or could it be on borrowed money from the E.U and the trough has finally run out. No doubt another €400 million will help. As for the amazing tolerance he speaks of I believe he must be referring to the E.U and the British people that many years

gates. A black transit van with English plates was seen along the lane – it stopped, and then moved off. That may be no more than a coincidence, but if it's not, and you are a reader of The News then you know who you are. The puppies are now with SOS and the costs of worming, vaccinating, microchipping, passporting (all legal requirements) and neutering will leave us with about €50 change out of €1,000. A number of News readers have responded to our advert in the paper for bric-a-brac etc for our market stall, and this little tale illustrates just why your support is so very important and very much appreciated. The puppies are lovely, and if anyone wants to know more about them do visit us on our stall at La Trocha Sunday market.
o why call this full moon the Harvest Moon? All full moons rise around the time of sunset. And because the moon orbits the earth in the same direction that the earth is rotating, the moon rises later each day – on average about 50 minutes later each day. The Harvest Moon is unique because the time difference between moonrises on successive evenings is much shorter than average. The moon rises approximately 30 minutes later from one night to the next, as seen from about 40 degrees N. or S. latitude. So there is no long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise for several days following the actual date of the full moon. In times past this feature of the Harvest Moon was said to help farmers to bring in their crops. They could continue working by moonlight even after the sun had set hence the name, the Harvest Moon.
T
he reason for the shorter than usual rising time between successive moonrises around the time of the Harvest Moon is that the plane of the Moon's orbit around the earth – the ecliptic – makes a narrower angle with respect to the horizon in autumn.
O
ften, a harvest moon seems to be bigger, brighter and more colourful than other full moons. The warm red colour of the Moon shortly after it rises is caused by light from the Moon passing through a greater amount of atmospheric
particles than when the Moon is overhead. The atmosphere scatters the blue component of moonlight, which is really reflected white light from the sun, but allows the red part of the light to travel a straighter path to one's eyes. Sunsets and sunrises often appear very red in colour because of the same effect.
A
harvest moon appears bigger when it is first seen close to the horizon, this is an optical effect known as the big moon illusion. No one is quite sure why the Moon appears bigger near to the horizon but it is thought that it is because there are objects such as buildings and trees in the foreground to give the view a sense of scale. But very accurate measurements have proven that the Moon is no bigger when it is closer to the horizon than when it is high up in the night sky.
T
his year’s harvest moon also happens to be a blue moon for people living in the Far East. A blue moon does not mean that the Moon will turn blue, it is the name given to the second full moon that occurs in a month. The length of time between two full moons is 29 ½ days so very rarely it is possible for two full moons to occur in one month. As the normal 12 full moons in a year all have names then the extra 13th moon was simply christened the Blue Moon. The last full moon occurred on 30th August and it too was a blue moon for anyone living further west than Australia. But in Australia it was already 1st September when the full moon occurred, so this full moon on Saturday will in effect give them two full moons happening in September.
T
he only month that it is possible to have no full moon occur is February which has 28 days; it is not possible for February to host a blue moon. Try to see this blue Moon they only happen well ... Once in a Blue Moon! Enjoy your stargazing.

Opel joins small crossover market with Mokka
Opel/Vauxhall says it wants to become No. 1 in the increasingly popular small crossover segment with the Mokka, its first such model. Four years ago, the segment accounted for just 150,000 sales, but following the success of the Nissan Juke and Skoda Yeti, demand may grow to 400,000 this year and 600,000 in 2015, Opel said. Opel forecasts annual sales of 100,000 Mokkas. The Mokka launches in October in Germany, followed by the rest of Europe by year's end.
A Classic Weekend Members of Sol Classic Car Club enjoyed a three-day event recently when they explored the stunning scenery on the edge of the Sierra Nevadas with two nights in the spa town of Lanjaron.
Defending World champion Sebastian Vettel won an incident-packed Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday to strengthen his chances of claiming a third successive Formula One title. Vettel was gifted the lead after Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire on the 23rd lap with a gearbox failure, Hamilton could be seen flipping his gear paddle but ended up just thumping the steering wheel in frustration. Team radio comms from McLaren stating that they had "done everything we
could yesterday" hinted that the issue had been a known problem going into the race. Vettel then withstood the challenge of Jenson Button through two safety car periods on the way to repeating his victory at the same circuit a year ago. "You're back in this championship, well done," Red Bull team principal Christian Horner told the German over the team radio. Championship leader Fernando Alonso took third spot in his Ferrari but saw his advantage over Vettel

reduced to 29 points with six rounds remaining. Force India's Paul di Resta claimed a creditable fourth spot, his best finish in Formula One, to cap a great weekend. After Karthikeyan crashed on lap 33, the safety car was deployed for a first time and it returned to the track a lap after coming in when Michael Schumacher slammed into the back of Jean Eric Vergne's Toro Rosso. The delays shortened the race by two laps to 59 but Vettel was never threatened by Button and cruised to his second consecutive victory in Singapore and second win of the season. Nico Rosberg took fifth place for Mercedes with Kimi Raikkonen maintaining his championship challenge with a sixth place finish in his Lotus, although the Finn is now a distant 45 points behind Alonso.
Endeavour hitches a ride for final journey For the last time in history, a space shuttle soared into the skies over Florida last Wednesday (Sept. 19). Rather than riding on rockets and heading into orbit however, the space shuttle Endeavour was mounted on top of a jumbo jet destined for a California museum's display. The retired orbiter, mated to the space agency's modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) took off from the Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility, which was the same runway where Endeavour made its 25th and final return from space in June 2011. The 7:22 a.m. EDT (1122 GMT) liftoff marked the start of the final ferry flight for the 30-year space shuttle program
The following morning it was back on the road, following a circular route which Dorian (also an avid biker) had mapped out while riding his Harley. There was an amazing contrast in the scenery, from sheer rock faces and majestic mountains to long undulating roads through pine woods (where there was a coffee stop at a remote venta under the shady trees), moving on to dizzy hairpin bends and huge vistas across to the sea, finally emerging into the bustle of Almuñecar. A short hop along the coast road to Motril and then it

was back inland for a well deserved lunch along the Guadalfeo river. It is on outings such as these that the true size of undeveloped Andalucia hits home. Of course, the classics were not alone on these wonderful roads, the lycra-clad cyclists inspired by the Vuelta a España were out in droves, mountain bikers with overloaded saddle bags peddled along more sedately, motor bikes and trail bikes overtook noisily and there were plenty of ordinary families out for their weekend picnics. But everyone on the road seemed happy to share the freedom and enjoyment of a day in the country. Another convivial evening rounded off the day with toasts to the organisers and to the efficient coordinaters – Club officials Ray Holland and Carol
Lindores who had worked so hard to get the event off the ground. The cars did members proud and nine stunning classics in various colours, all with gleaming paintwork made a stunning and eye-catching sight. The following morning there was a more leisurely drive down to the coast to Torrox Costa where the intrepid travellers were joined by other club members for Sunday lunch. The weekend was a first for many of the participants but, if the enthusiasm is anything to go by, it certainly won't be the last. Sol Classic Car Club run a variety of events and there are many more in the pipeline. If classic cars are your passion you are welcome to come along – go to their website www.solclassiccarclub.net to learn more. Written by Jean Joss

Vettel closes on Alonso
On the Friday eighteen drivers and passengers in nine classics met up at the Hotel Vinuela overlooking the lake where they were briefed by organisers Dorian and Su Hill – as experienced rally drivers they are no strangers to long classic runs. Driving in their rare 1968 Porsche 912 Targa they led the cavalcade up into the mountains across the fertile plateau of Ventas de Zafarraya, through Alhama de Granada and across to the edge of the Alpujarras on quiet country roads, arriving in Lanjaron early enough to relax before drinks and dinner on the terrace of the Hotel Alcadima overlooking the mountains.

Malaga remain unbeaten
Brandt Snedeker held his nerve to win the PGA Tour Championship Athletic Bilbao 0 - 0 Malaga in Atlanta, and with it the FedEx Cup jackpot of $10m (£6.15m). After the fantastic result in half Snedeker, 32, shared the overnight lead with England's Justin Rose, and shot a two-under-par 68 for 10 under overall. Rose (71) holed a long putt on the 18th to claim second, three shots behind, with Luke Donald (67) tied-third. Snedeker was recently named as a USA wildcard pick for the Ryder Cup which starts on Friday at Medinah, Illinois. The American, who led this year's Open at the halfway mark before eventually taking a share of third place, was one of five players – along with Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy and US trio Tiger
Woods, Nick Watney and Phil Mickelson who knew that victory in Atlanta could be enough to also win the FedEx Cup. After 11 successive rounds in the 60s, McIlroy – who won the Tour's two previous play-off events and took a decent lead into the PGA Tour Championship – closed with a 74 for a share of 10th place on one under. He still won a $3m bonus for

But it was Bilbao who started the better with their typical harassing style. On the 10 minute mark, a good Malaga move ended with Gamez testing the Bilbao keeper at the near post. Toulalan was back in the starting line-up for Malaga, but with neither team playing well it was probably the right game for him to come back into the action as he looked a little out of sorts after his layoff. Wayne’s Poker Last week we learned the basic rules of Texas Holdem so now let’s talk about hand selection. The biggest mistake made by novice poker players is being involved in too many pots and playing weak hands passively. Just calling the blinds with rag hands is losing play over the long term. OK you may play A5 and hit Trip 5s and take down a big pot but the next 10 times you play this hand it will cost you. The secret when starting out is to play tight with a good hand selection policy. These are the hands to play: Ace, King or Queen is a good kicker which is the second card in your hand. With these cards the Kicker must be no lower than a 10. Pairs AA, KK, QQ – play these very aggressively, raise and bet, 22 to JJ if no one has already raised, you
must! Now if someone has raised in front of you, a flat call is fine as set mining can play out well if you hit a set and if the flop shows an “over card”, we can fold cheaply if it looks like we are behind. So, here’s some poker terms for you. Kicker is the 2nd card in your hand. 3 bet is the re-raise to a raise of the blind. Rag hand is a weak hand such as 58. Flat call is calling the bet without raising. Set mining is entering a pot with a pocket pair cheaply in order to catch a set (three of a kind) when there’s two of them on the board. Under the gun is the first position after the Big Blind. What would you do? In late position we are dealt Ad/Qd, the player under

Lauro Golf Bowls Club, which is owned and run by its members, is a succesful sport and social venue now in its fourth year. During the summer they enjoyed friendly challenge trophies with several other clubs, all ending with social events. They have hosted fun days for other groups, such as the British Legion, who fancy a change and have, perhaps, not played before. The club is known for its friendly and sociable atmosphere based around its full bar fascilities. The more serious league season starts shortly, with weekly matches for both of Lauro’s teams. This does not detract from the three
club days or the social bowling available at any time. All details of times and days are available on their website www.laurogolfbowls.yolasit e.com .This includes details of their Open competition which is from the 15th to the 23rd October. All visitors are welcome to come and watch. The club is always ready to welcome new members or social bowlers on a payand-play basis and free introductory sessions to the game are available. World cycling championships One of the pre-race favourites Belgium’s Philippe Gilbert perfectly timed his final effort and won the cycling world championships road race on Sunday. The Belgian, who had a disappointing early season, surged ahead on the final climb of the Cauberg and never looked back, holding off his rivals on the flatter run in. Norway's Edvald Boasson Hagen who rides for Team Sky finished second ahead of Spaniard Alejandro Valverde at the end of a 267-km ride from Maastricht that ended with a 16.1-km loop going up the Cauberg, a 1,200-metre ascent with a 5.8 percent gradient, 10 times. Defending champion Mark Cavendish, who had no chance of retaining his title because of the nature of the course, pulled out exhausted after being at the head of affairs for the first 140 km. The Manxman was very lucky at one point as a spectator almost took his head off with a sign on the inside of an uphill corner, Cav escaped with only a sore neck. Another Sky rider Ian Stannard escaped the peloton with two laps to go but was reeled in by the
Belgian and Spanish teams. He then worked to try and get Jonathan Tiernan-Locke into a good position with the last climb up the Cauberg looming. He managed that part but Tiernan-Locke was spent and couldn’t live with the spurt that Gilbert put in. Britain’s women though flew the flag at these championships with Elinor Barker emulating Welsh compatriot Nicole Cooke by winning the women's junior
securing gold in Valkenburg. Garner, who turned 18 on Thursday, again emulated 2008 Olympic gold medallist Nicole Cooke, the only other woman to retain the junior title. The teenager finished ahead of Norway's Eline Brustand and Anna Stricker of Italy in a bunch-sprint of 19 riders. "This win is a team effort more than anything," she said. England warned by West Indies' Darren Sammy West Indies captain Darren Sammy has warned England that his team can play "unbeatable" World Twenty20 cricket. Reigning T20 world champions England face Sammy's side in their first Super Eight game in Pallekele on Thursday. New Sky Blues boss Robins makes four new signings New Coventry City manager Mark Robins has made his first four signings for the struggling League One club. Midfielders Conor Henderson and Franck Moussa and leftback Jamie Reckord were all signed in time for Robins' first home game in charge, against Carlisle United on Saturday. Arsenal's Henderson, 21, and Wolves' Reckord, 20, have both joined on three-month loan deals. Free agent Moussa, 23, signs a short-term deal after two years at Leicester. Derby midfielder James Bailey joins on a threemonth loan deal. Bailey, who can play in midfield or at right-back, is new boss Mark Robins' fourth signing in five days.
Fantastic Opportunity! Britain’s Lucy Garner takes gold in the junior road race
time-trial. Barker, 18, of Cardiff finished 35 seconds ahead of Denmark's Cecilie Ludwig with Dutch rider Demi Di Jong third in the 15.6km race. Cooke won the event in 2001 and took gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Not to be outdone Lucy Garner became only the second woman to win back-to-back junior road race titles after
in Elinor Barker, Emily Kay, Molly Weaver and Jessie Walker. She was in the leading group throughout the five 16.5km laps, which each featured two climbs the Bemelerberg and Cauberg – as she won in a time of two hours 11 minutes and 26 seconds. By Mike Kerrigan
