ICKHAM’S

WORLD in Malaga, Almeria Challenging and Murcia

By Kym Wickham

Massive search for missing 5year-old

At least 10 people died when heavy rains triggered flash floods across the south of the country last Friday - hardest hit areas were the provinces of Malaga and Almeria, and the Murcia region.

Last weekend we decided to move kitchens around. We have two kitchens and the smaller of the two had our whopping great 90cm wide range cooker in it, while the main kitchen had a soppy little one so, come Saturday, everything was being moved around, ends sawn off work surfaces, bits thrown out and units moved around kitchens and between kitchens. now all I need are nice new work surfaces and a new sink as the one I’ve got is tiny. Sounds like a trip to Ikea in the near future then. next weekend we have to put the other kitchen back together again but, in the meantime my lovely shiny oven is wonderful and I’m watching half a ton of cookery programmes again for inspiration. I really must get out more and get a life!

The worst hit area in Malaga was Alora where pigs, hens, horses and donkeys could be seen floating in the flood waters to end up in piles of corpses as the waters receded. Unemployment in the town stands at 30 per cent and few people can afford insurance. Two bridges were washed away – one in Alora and the other in El Valle de Abdalajis. Hundreds of people were evacuated. On returning to their homes on Sunday, many found the floods had carried away all their belongings. In Archidona, Malaga, residents found the body of an 80-year-old man lying in mud about two kilometres from where he was thought to have been swept away by the water. In Puerto Lumbreras, Murcia, emergency crews also found the body of another man near marshland. In the same area Juan Asensio jumped into raging waters

to try to save his nine-yearold sister, only to be swept away with her. They were being driven home from school by their grandfather who also died. Another person identified among the victims was a 52-year-old British woman, Diana Dudas, who went missing on Thursday night in the town of Vera, Almeria. The British press reported that her body had been found on Sunday, based on an interview with her friend Genny Sutcliffe, 56, who

said she’d been told Dudas’s body had been washed up in the lagoon. However, on Tuesday the Spanish press said rescuers were still searching for her.

Det Supt Bevan added: "We're liaising with our colleagues, neighbouring forces, specialist advice, and specially trained family liaison officers are supporting April's family." He also praised the "tremendous response" from the community.

A tornado that was spawned during a storm hit Gandia, Valencia, seriously injured a 38-year-old man who was swept up and thrown by the winds. A 44year-old woman was also injured by a flying palm tree that was uprooted by the tornado. The twister also knocked down a Ferris wheel at an amusement park.

Inspector Kevin Davies said the fire service and police dog teams had been mobilised, and vehicle check-points set up on roads going in and out of the town. The street where April disappeared has been cordoned off. Posters of April were also circulated and put up around the town and a hotline number has been released for people to call with information. Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Powell of DyfedPowys Police said officers

In Lorca, which was heavily damaged by an earthquake last year, some 30 tons of mud and debris were hauled away from the streets in the town’s historic centre. The downpours, the worst in 12 years, made up for a very dry winter and spring, authorities said.

Well, if nothing else the last few weeks have been challenging. The computers and internet connections following the fires have been an absolute nightmare and, from what I hear up here in the “woop woop”, it’s not only us that are affected. We have a printer off-line that needs to be configured so were using another one, and that’s just run out of ink! It seems to be just one thing after another at the moment and, not being known for being mild tempered (can’t understand why?!) it’s just amazing the wotsit hasn’t completely hit the fan yet. Still, they will all get sorted out eventually and the world and his wife will calm down again.... soon I hope!

were "becoming increasingly concerned for her safety". He said the force had launched an "intensive search and criminal investigation" into the abduction. April was last seen wearing a purple knee-length coat with a fur hood, white school polo top and black trousers. Local people described the family as "very well liked" and said they had helped create a community garden on the town's Bryn-y-Gog estate, which has more than 100 homes. Machynlleth, a historic market town in the Dyfi Valley, has a population of around 2,100. At press time, police had arrested an unidentified 46-year-old man in connection with the disappearance.

Call for change in Jobless up again law on protests The government’s delegate in Madrid’s regional parliament, Cristina Cifuentes, has called for changes to the law on the right to protest, after Madrid Mayor Ana Botella implied last week that there are too many demonstrations in the capital. Botella said that so far this year there had been 2,732 street protests, as opposed to 1,380 in 2011. Cifuentes said the right to protest was enshrined in the Constitution and that they could be held without prior authorisation but added that the number of demonstrations was getting out of hand and the centre of Madrid was fast becoming uninhabitable. She noted that the law on

Brussels ready and willing to act for Spain The European Union’s commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, Olli Rehn told a joint news conference in Madrid with Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos on Monday that Spain had still not asked for a second bailout but insisted that Brussels is ready and willing to act if it receives such a request. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has repeatedly said he wants to know what conditions would be imposed before he makes his mind up. However, Rehn said that the conditions are set by the Commission and have already been discussed within the Eurogroup. The euro zone has the tools

Regional premiers meet in Madrid

After a breakfast attended by King Juan Carlos and Crown Prince Felipe, the 5th Conference of Regional Premiers was held in the Upper House on Tuesday, chaired by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, Deputy PM

Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría and Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro. One of the main items on the agenda was regional financing, due to be

reviewed next year. Rajoy explained his reasons for concentrating on cutting the national deficit while the regional premiers put forward proposals for softening the effect of the cuts.

Unions pondering a general strike The unions and social organisations that form part of the so-called Social Summit have announced more nationwide protests against government spending cuts on October 7th. At a press conference on Tuesday, they said each

member of the Summit was studying the possibility of holding a general strike before Christmas, when Parliament will be discussing the government’s budget for next year. UGT

Prices range from as little headquarters elsewhere. as €50,000 to an average of €125,000. However, most of them need extensive restoration work. The Catalan businessman told regional premier Artur Mas: “There is no publishing business that has its headquarters in a foreign country that speaks a different language. That's absurd. The headquarters would have to go to Zaragoza, Madrid or Cuenca." In an interview with ABC Punto Radio, Lara warned the Catalan parties that they could be creating "expectations for people" regarding a project that might not be taken to full term. He said that a "sufficient breeding ground" for independence does not

exist, because a majority of Catalans – between 60 per cent and 80 per cent in his estimation – feel both Catalan and Spanish in varying proportions. Grupo Planeta is a giant publishing concern that includes several major labels and Editus, France's second-largest publishing group, which Lara acquired in 2008. The conglomerate also includes television station Antena 3, the radio stations Onda Cero and Europa FM, and the conservative daily La Razón as well as the bookstore chain La Casa del Libro and the book

told an event organised by the business school ESADE: "This is the time to sit down to talks, not to encourage confrontation. Business people are faced with a complex situation during this duel between administrations, and they are wondering what's going to happen to their activities."

Spain’s first experimental marine energy wind project off the coast of tarragona has received an international setback in the form of a resolution of the World Conservation Congress held in Jeju, South Korea, earlier this month. the objection presented by SEo/Birdlife said the project affects the principal habitat of the Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus Mauritanicus). it called on the Catalan and Spanish governments "not to authorize the Zefir wind farm project on the Ebro delta," considering it incompatible with the conservation of the Balearic Shearwater. the area is important for the conservation of 11 marine species, and SEo/Birdlife's report recommends a search for an alternative area.

The call to transfer weapons to libya's army was promoted through a private television station and apparently gained momentum after the US ambassador was killed in benghazi, sparking resentment of armed militias. assault rifles, anti-aircraft guns, rocket launchers and even tanks were among military hardware handed in. army chief of staff yussef al-Mangoush said he hoped the collection would also expand to other libyan cities. Eurozone unemployment reaches a new high Unemployment in the eurozone hit a new high of 18.2 million in August, according to the EU statistics agency Eurostat. Across the wider 27-nation European Union, unemployment rose by 49,000 to 25.5 million people, Eurostat said, with the unemployment rate stable at 10.5 per cent. Compared with a year earlier, the unemployment rate rose in 20 countries, fell

in six and remained stable in the UK. The highest unemployment rate was recorded in Spain, where 25.1 per cent of the workforce is out of a job, and the lowest of 4.5 per cent was recorded in Austria. The unemployment rate in Germany was 5.5 per cent, Eurostat said. By way of comparison, the unemployment rate in the US was 8.1 per cent in

August and 4.1 per cent in Japan. Youth unemployment remains a particular concern, with the rate among under-25s hitting 22.8 per cent across the eurozone, and 52.9 per cent in Spain. The European Commission has urged governments and businesses to act to try to avoid the "disaster" of "a lost generation".

‘Abortion boat’ heads towards Morocco coast A Dutch "abortion boat" has set sail for Morocco – its first trip to a Muslim country – to provide abortions to women who are exposed to grave health risks if treated domestically. Rebecca Gomperts, the founder of the Dutch nonprofit organisation Women on Waves, told reporters that, according to figures published by the Moroccan government, between 600 and 800 abortions take

place there, where the procedure is illegal and taboo, but only about 200 cases are done properly, for women who have money. The rest resort to dangerous methods because they are unable to afford the expensive treatment which causes the death of 78 Moroccan women each year on average, according to World Health Organisation statistics.

The Dutch organisation says it was "invited" to Morocco by the local youth group the Alternative Movement for Individual Liberties (MALI), to raise support for the legalisation of abortion in the country. Over the past 11 years, a Women on Waves ship has visited Ireland, Poland, Portugal and Spain, sparking protests in each country from pro-life groups.

Risky The risks of visiting remote areas off the beaten track became apparent when a 22-year-old British woman was kidnapped in Ecuador last Friday while visiting a nature reserve in the Amazon jungle. Fortunately she was rescued. She was travelling by canoe when she was taken, along with an Australian woman, by a group of Columbian criminals. She was brought to safety by police and armed forces on Saturday night according to Ecuador’s interior minister. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Britain is advising against all travel to the areas immediately bordering Columbia in Carchi Province because of criminal activity and organised crime in the area.

Innocent attacked CCTV cameras near the Revolution bar in Birmingham’s Broad Street show images of an attacker repeatedly stamping on the head of his 18-year-old victim as he lay unconscious on the floor just before 4am on Sunday, September 9th. It was feared that the teenaged victim had lost the sight in one eye but his vision has since returned and West Midlands police decided that the footage, where you can see the attacker stamping up to 10 times on his head and neck, was too shocking to release to the general public. The teenager has lost several teeth and has serious facial injuries. Investigating officer Detective Constable Sarah McDonnell said: "The

victim was a totally innocent party. He got caught up in an incident and was understandably unhappy at being shoved to the ground. He approached the aggressor and was then punched to the floor and repeatedly stamped upon. Thankfully, the victim is recovering in hospital but the severity of the attack, the repeated and furious stamping on his head, meant we could have been looking at a murder enquiry. We have very clear CCTV images of the offender and also the males who were with him on the night. I’d urge them to make contact with police.” The attacker can also be seen apparently trying to justify his actions to a crowd that had gathered but eventually just walked off.

The other result of some significance was Arsenal’s first defeat by table topping Chelsea. It was a close match and a draw would probably have been a fair result, but Arsenal’s failure to defend set-pieces and Chelsea keeper Petr Cech’s fine form decided the issue. written by Vic Gardner

The case is a spin-off of the Malaya corruption case. Pantoja’s lawyer is asking for her to be treated the same as the King’s youngest daughter, the Infanta Cristina, whose husband Iñaki

The Palma de Mallorca judge trying that case has ruled that the fact the Infanta was a member of the board of a company belonging to her husband was not sufficient reason reason for bringing charges against her. After a month-long investigation, police arrested a 20-year-old gardener in Alhaurin el Grande on Monday and charged him with starting a forest fire through negligence. He had been employed to look after a garden in Barranco Blanco and had burned the remains of some ornamental plants he had pruned. He left the fire still smouldering which then set fire to the surrounding dry woodland and scrub, causing a blaze which eventually devoured 8,225 hectares of land over a period of three days at the end of August. One man died and two were seriously injured, 6,500 people were evacuated from their

homes, 20 houses were burned down and another 100 or so were badly damaged. The police said that the meteorological

conditions prevailing at the time he lit the bonfire should have warned him – as a professional gardener – of the danger of fire.

It was the third such robbery in recent years – the others were in Seville and Malaga – and the police believe they were all carried out by the same gang, believed to consist of Colombians, Moroccans and Spaniards. The police have not recovered any of the 774 kilos of drugs stolen in the three heists. Four years ago, an Anti-organised Crime agent removed 154 kilos of drugs from the deposit in Seville, carrying it out in a back-pack over a number of weekends. He was caught and jailed but the drugs were never recovered. Security at the official drug deposits is notoriously lax, usually consisting of nothing more than cameras, which leaves the

Memo from

Voice Madrid Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Dirty tricks

T

here was a very interesting discussion on TVE1’s Los Desayunos (The Breakfasts) on Monday morning. One of the three invited journalists kicked it off saying: “Well, you know what Spaniards are like, if they can flout authority and make money while they’re at it they will.” He was referring to those people who are on the dole, while still working at their old jobs in cahoots with the bosses. The MO is that they get “fired”, apply for the dole, but continue in their jobs, being paid under the counter. The workers benefit because they get a nice little bit extra every month and the bosses benefit because they don’t have to pay social security. The journalist in question told how he had been talking to someone “high up” in the Socialist Party who’d said it was a common practice all over Spain. All three journalists said “everyone” knew it was going on. So just how many unemployed are there in Spain? The dole offices are already trying to suss out these people. I’m not sure how often the unemployed have to sign in but it’s usually on the same day at the same time. Now the suspect ones are being given a different day and time just to complicate matters for them. Work inspectors are also turning up at work places without warning. If they find evidence of this scam, the employer faces a fine of at least €6,000 and the worker has to pay back the dole he’s collected.

B

ut Social Security funds are depleted – so I reckon they’re going to go all out to get all these workers off the dole (which makes the unemployment figure look much better), and get the money back as well as nice juicy fines from the bosses, which will fill up the coffers.

A sly one

W

hen I first really took notice of him, Catalan premier Artur Mas had just been nominated leader of Convergencia y Union (CiU, Convergence and Union), having been the Convergencia party’s Number Two man for several years. (The CiU is really two parties, with Convergencia being the dominant one in the 20-odd years it governed in Catalonia.) Mas appeared on a late-night political chat show on RTVE shortly after his nomination and I remember thinking how slick and smooth tongued he was – and completely untrustworthy. Both

Charity begins at home Convergencia and Union had been moderate nationalist parties until Mas took over, when he started to lead CiU down a more pro-independence path. At the time, the Socialist Party was in power in coalition with two rabidly independentista parties and breaking with Spain was “the In thing”. In the campaign for the last regional election, Mas gave the impression that he would be the man to lead Catalonia out of Spain but I don’t think that was why he won. He won because the Socialists and their loony coalition partners had made a complete mess of it during two administrations and the Catalans wanted to get back to something like the “normal” life they’d led when CiU had governed.

A

fter falling out with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy over a new tax plan for Catalonia a couple of weeks back, Mas called a snap election for November 25th, some two years ahead of time, and is running on the demand for the Catalans’ “right to choose”, that is, to stay or break with Spain. Just days after he called the election, a poll showed only 20 per cent wanted independence, 60 per cent were against it and the rest either didn’t know or wanted more powers for the regional government but to stay in Spain. But so far, Mas is getting what he wants – to dominate the national and international headlines and show the world that Catalonia really matters, and to throw more spanners into Rajoy’s works to put the economy back on its feet. I doubt if the voters will swallow his independence lure because they know full well why he really called the election – to divert their attention away from the savage spending cuts he’s made and the region’s high unemployment rate.

A vow

F

ollowers of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez have already killed three opposition politicians who supported Henrique Capriles, the man most likely to oust him from power by democratic means on October 7th. The military have already said they’ll stand for no nonsense from Chavez’s militia hordes on election day so things may get nasty. However, if Capriles wins I intend to celebrate his victory by publishing a photo of me with Chavez taken in 1999 and to tell the story behind it.

N

o one likes the budget. The regional leaders of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's Partido Popular (PP) are up in arms. So are the Socialists, the trade unions, workers, civil servants, teachers, retirees, you name it. And if you believe some in Rajoy's entourage, not even the prime minister likes it. So why is next year's budget causing so much stress? Harsh measures projected for 2013 include some 20 billion euros worth of spending cuts, mostly in the ministries. The government also wants to slash unemployment benefits with the hope that the extra revenue will go to its staunch commitment to raise pensions by one per cent next year. There will be at least some 20 per cent in cuts on medical costs that will be felt at the regional level. Most of the cutbacks are due to the interest payments Spain will have to pay on its borrowing costs next year. Yet the government ministers who unveiled this document last Thursday maintained that this is a "social budget" because 63 per cent will be allotted on social spending.

Y

et one of the biggest red flags being unfurled is the cuts in unemployment benefits. Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro claims that this budget will allow Spain to emerge from the recession next year. Yet the job figures will no doubt surpass the 25 per cent mark by early 2013, if not before. Cutting jobless benefits at this stressful time is not the answer. No doubt the government wants people to go back to work, but that’s impossible when there is no stimulus to create employment. Rajoy's budget has zero allotments for funding new public investments in infrastructure and other job-creating ventures. It is almost as if the PM wants Brussels to come up with a stimulus package for debt-ridden European nations, and we all know the answer to that wishful thought.

G

ermany claims that it made similar painful adjustments in 2005 when it overhauled its labour force and cut jobless benefits in an effort to get people back to work. And it was accomplished. So if Berlin was able to do it, can other countries such as Spain and France do it, as they say in the German capital? Yet Germany's unemployment rate was nowhere near Spain's current indicators. Most unemployed Germans were able to find work then, even in menial jobs, which hardly exist in Spain right now.

S

ince last week, there have been three massive protests outside the doors of Congress – the first one ended in violent clashes between anti-riot police and demonstrators that left some 80 injured and led to 34 arrests. The beatings by the police were captured by TV cameras and flashed around the globe. As the political and social crisis gets out of hand, the government is determined to meet Brussels’ expectations no matter how difficult it will be for the average Spaniard. Charity begins at home but Rajoy isn't keen on seeing it that way. He wants to keep his European supervisors happy while completely forgetting that his principal responsibility is to his citizens.

S

o what is behind this thinking? Rajoy says that Spain needs these painful adjustments if the country is to move forward. But of course there is also big money involved and the fat interests that go with it. This government's main task, it appears, is to keep the nation's bankers happy. Spain will need at least €54 billion to recapitalise its financial institutions and hopes to get that money from Brussels in the coming days. More bailout cash might also be in the works. This will of course push Spain's public debt from about 85 per cent of GDP projected for this year to 91 per cent by the end of 2013 based on conservative estimates. The government had hoped that Brussels would funnel the money directly to the banks without having to use it as a middleman collector but that plan was immediately rejected by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. So now it will be up to future administrations to ensure that the banks pay back all this money. Rajoy, of course, will be long gone by then.

I

f the banking industry has been irresponsible in the past with its clients’ money, there are no guarantees that it will change its ways. Some of the money for recapitalisation of course will also go to help pay big salaries for bank executives. The PP government has promised an overhaul of the financial sector, and Brussels has said that it will lay down conditions for the recapitalisation venture, which should include how the funds are spent, but we haven't seen anything jotted down on paper. As the finance minister Montoro revealed on Saturday to reporters, there are strong indications that of the billions of euros that have been pumped into the banks since 2010 by the Spanish government, little if any will be paid back. More losses for citizens in a lost country.

Alberto Martin - “e man who loves wood” Alberto started as a carpenter/cabinet maker when he was 17 with an apprenticeship in a workshop in Marbella where he spent the next seven years learning all aspects of woodworking, and all about woodworking tools and how to use them. However, his passion has always been guitar making and the repair of musical instruments – but primarily the construction of guitars both acoustic and electric. The construction of guitars has always been a closely guarded secret within certain craft groups, with the skill passed down from father to son. It is something they like to keep to themselves but Alberto was lucky enough to be friends with the son of an accomplished guitar maker in Malaga who, after some persuasive efforts on Alberto’s behalf, agreed to show him the rudiments of his craft. So Alberto was able to add these skills to what he

had taught himself and what he had learned about the use of wood – especially how to make really durable wood glues and how to use them during his apprenticeship – and now he began to create authentic guitars. In 2003 Alberto was made redundant due to the turndown in the construction and wood working industry, so decided to set up his own carpentry business making all types of bespoke furniture as well as doing repairs etc. But the love of guitars finally took over and he set himself up as a specialised guitar maker and repairer. He has been working full time in his workshop in Pueblo Andaluz in Las Chapas (next door to The Village Inn) for the last eight years and is gradually building up a satisfied clientele by word of mouth and by advertising in The News. If you visit Alberto in his workshop

the first thing you will notice is the fantastic smell of the seasoned woods, the glues and the French polish that Alberto uses to finish his guitars (quite unlike the modern sprayed by machine lacquers). Then you will notice the organised chaos of a creative workshop – the well used and loved tools hanging from the walls, and the guitars in various stages of repair and construction. Alberto’s workshop is pictured below with Alberto and a guitar in the making (left) and the finished product (right). If he has a work in progress, as he won’t buy the next piece of equipment until he can afford it, he still makes many of the smaller parts by hand including the bone frets that he carves himself –only buying in the seasoned wood from retired wood workers and from a worldwide network of

wood suppliers (mainly from Madrid and Valencia) and the machined heads for tightening the strings. He works in rosewood, cypress and maple, the wood being seasoned for at least five years. You can tell that Alberto loves wood and guitars by the passion that shines in his eyes when he talks about his trade. But not all of Alberto’s love goes into his guitars. Now he is 35 years old and has a wife and three children to look after as well – but guitars are clearly his first love. For more information, see Alberto’s advert on page 15. FOUND! This little chap was found in the El Rincon area of Coin (near Las Delicias). He is NOT microchipped, is approx 8/9 months old, and very friendly. Has anyone lost him? I cannot keep him, even though he is an adorable dog so if he has been dumped can anyone help give him a loving home for life now that he so deserves? Call Sue on 650 434 751

Deprive the dog of physical contact for two minutes at a time. Crate or tie in the same room as the favourite person about 3-4 feet away. Everyone must ignore the dog. Read or watch TV. Do this as often as possible for several days. Return and pet, cuddle and love the dog only when he's calm. Increase the time and distance from the dog separately and gradually. Next tie or crate dog in the same room with his favourite person but block his view of that person. The person may verbally praise

the dog when he's quiet. Then crate or tie the dog in another room with the door open. Listen for stress and praise calmness. Then close the door of the room with dog loose in it. The owner should sit on the floor right by the closed door. Listen for stress. Praise calmness with lots of love. Then leave recently worn clothing right outside the door while person is away. You can record a family conversation and play it whenever you leave the dog. David is on Talk Radio every Saturday from 10am - 11.am (Calahonda to Nerja) 88.9fm (Calahonda to Algeciras) 91.9fm

The George Michael Tribute show was not like watching a tribute, but more like watching the man himself. Pete Valentine not only has the same voice as George Michael, but he actually looks identical. Last Thursday’s performance was Pete’s second show in Spain this year. Pete has been singing all his life, but for the past four years, he has taken advantage of his striking physical and vocal similarities to Mr. Michael and performs his tribute shows all over Europe. Don’t be disheartened if you missed this show as Rodizio Macarena has two more first class tribute shows lined up. On October 11th you will be able to see the Rod Stewart tribute show and on

October 18th, Adele. If you want to come along and see these amazing shows, you can enjoy a Rodizio dinner for as little as €12.50, making it the best value night out around. Anyone who would like to s e e t h e

You can still catch the Brazilian floor show every evening along with the scrumptious Rodizio meats and endless salad bar, and remember on Wednesday’s, all children under 12 years old eat free so you can have a great, affordable family night out! So, get these dates in your diary so you don’t miss the chance to see the very best of tribute shows! Rodizio Macarena is located underneath the Los Piramidies Hotel on

Dressage at Los Prados

Date change

Dressage has become more popular after the outstanding success of the British Olympic riders this summer and if there are any riders out there who would like to see whether they can work in harmony with their horse then come along to the next Los Prados dressage day in Alhaurin el Grande on Sunday October 21st, starting at 11 am.

The classes will be Walk & Trot, Prelims 7 & 18 and Promocion 4. Entry is 10€ per class, any bit permitted. Tests may be called. And, naturally, there will be rosettes for the winners.

This month’s Foreign Residents Association of Estepona (AREME) have a change of date for this month’s coffee morning/table sale.

This is a friendly, no pressure day out which is ideal for novice riders to share with fellow enthusiasts – all ages and levels of expertise are welcome to attend and there will be refreshments and stalls selling things horsey.

ARCH (Andalucian Rescue Centre for Horses) have been invited to have a stand selling tack at the show. Help would be gratefully appreciated to deliver tack and return to stables in the afternoon. If you can lend a hand call Claire on 635 798 219.

For more information contact Debbie on 687 949 975 or send her a message on Facebook – www.facebook.com/lospra dos.prados

It will now be this Saturday, 6th October, instead of the 20th at The Palacio de Congresos, Estepona, from 11.00am to 2.00pm. AREME would also like to announce that there will be a THIRD FORUM at The Palacio de Congresos, Estepona, arranged by The Councillor for Tourism and Foreign Residents, Mrs Marina Segovia, on Monday October 22nd at 11:00am followed by the AGM.

To give it its full title it is The Feria de la Virgin del Rosario, patrona de Fuengirola but it is often called The Horse Feria.

The custom built feria ground between Los Boliches and Fuengirola, on Ramon y Cajal Avenue hosts a large fair with rides and Casetas (Association Clubhouses).

This colourful event indeed has a strong emphasis on horses, horse drawn carriages and the traditional Spanish costumes associated with

Many of the Casetas are open to the public and put on traditional Spanish dance and food.

There are other events during the day in the bullring. For a full programme contact the town hall offices in Fuengirola or Los Boliches. the

Parka’s Scooter Bar nights to remember There’s lots coming up at Parka’s on the Calahonda Strip in the next few weeks. This Saturday, October 6th you can dance the night away to a Northern Soul Night. For those of you who don’t know what a Northern Soul Night is, it is the original dance music of the 50s and 60s coming out of the Mods movement, that became popular first of all in such places as The Twisted Wheel in Manchester. This scene (and the associated dances and fashions) quickly spread to other UK dancehalls and nightclubs like the Chateau Impney (Droitwich), Catacombs (Wolverhampton), the Highland Rooms at Blackpool Mecca, Golden Torch (Stoke-on-Trent), and Wigan Casino. then the

scene took over the world! Popular Northern Soul records were usually not recent releases. This meant that the movement was sustained (and "new" recordings added to playlists) by prominent DJs discovering rare and previously overlooked records. Later on, certain clubs and DJs began to move away from the 1960s Motown sound and began to play newer releases with a more contemporary sound.

Soon at e Salon The Salon Varietes Theatre, Fuengirola will be presenting the award winning musical Guys and Dolls from Friday 12th until Sunday 21st October. This musical fable tells the story of how Sarah Brown (Chelsea Greene) of the save-a-soul mission loses her heart to Sky Masterson, a high-flying gambler (John Gale) whilst a second romance involves Nathan Detroit (David Vincent), the organiser of the oldest rolling crap

game in New York and Miss Adelaide (Leanne White), the featured attraction at the Hot Box nightclub. Hit songs from the musical include Luck Be a Lady Tonight, Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat, A Bushel and a Peck and I've Never Been In Love Before. Directed by Peter Mitchell, with choreography by Peter Height and musical direction by Sylvia Griffiths this is sure to be a sure fire

hit and early booking is advised. To book your tickets phone the theatre box office on 952 47 45 42

SAVAGES Directed by Oliver Stone Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Benicio del Toro, Aaron Johnson, Salma Hayek A gritty thriller set in the grim world of the drugs trade would seem to be right up Oliver Stone’s street. But sadly this latest offering from the director has received a fair bit of critical flack from reviewers who rate it as no more than an overblown B movie in which style reigns over substance and the acting veers from teak veneer to over-emphatic scary gurning. Former US Navy Seal Chon (Kitsch) and his best friend Ben (Johnson) share a girlfriend O (Blake Lively) and a fabulously fun life style funded by their very lucrative trade

in marijuana. So successful are they that a Mexican drug cartel headed by Hayek decides that it’s time to step in and take a big slice of the action. To prove serious intent Hayek, aided by sneering sadistic sidekick Lado (del Toro) kidnap O. A now amply upholstered, thinning on top John Travolta pops into the action as a corrupt FBI agent but Pulp Fiction it ain’t. It’s garish and noisy with lots of action as Chon and Ben fight to rescue O and salvage their futures. If you like brash

B movies then this will be your thing – but be ready to give up 2 hours and 11 minutes of your life.

DVD NEW RELEASE Release date: October 8th, 2012

THIRTEEN Starring: Academy Award nominee Mickey Rourke.

Jason Statham, Sam Riley, Ray Winstone and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, star in this intense thriller about the underground 'sport' of Russian roulette. It is fiercely organised and ferociously secret. It attracts depraved gamblers and desperate men. And tonight, one naive young player will mistakenly become a numbered participant in a deadly world of power, violence and chance where the ultimate bets

are decided by a squeeze of the trigger. The stakes are high, but the payout is more than he can resist. Emmanuelle Chriqui, Michael Shannon, Alexander Skarsgård ("True Blood"), David Zayas ("Dexter") and Ben Gazzara (Road House) co-star in writer/director Géla Babluani's whiteknuckle American remake of his 13 TZAMETI, the film that

swept Europe, shocked Sundance and now translates as one of the most extreme edge-ofyour-seat thrillers of the year.

It is all to play for now and when push comes to shove, you will keep going until you get to where you want to be. The passion in you is rising up and the heat will be full on this weekend. Prepare for relationship outbursts, if there has been something that you have been keeping inside, this is the moment for release and it is likely to explode when you least expect it. If you want to find yourself on the same page as another follow it up with some compromise and compassion. Make room and dedicate time to work through any relationship snags. Nothing can move forward now until you deal with and address a current complicated connection or two. Everything is set to stop in your world until the tides have been calmed and emotional issues have been nurtured. Mend the fences instead of harbouring resentment. Learn who to trust and get busy by setting a record straight. Take a look at your health this week as any dis-ease could be associated with a certain sort of emotional unrest that hasn’t been addressed. Humans are more than efficient at filing away emotions to look at on a later date but once this is addressed it will feel like a relief to unload. Focus is also directed towards your current financial position and material possessions. This is a good time for a spring clean in that area. You are about to be brought to the edge of discomfort, reaching your own limits in a key relationship, something falls easily out of balance, the key is to follow the tides no matter how turbulent they might be for it is the most direct route to getting to your desired location. Others will be attracted to you right now and there could be many temptations around. You will seeking to find a way to improve your financial situation. A crossroads has been reached in your relationship world, caught between the past and the future, a way through is available but it is likely to be a way that takes you by surprise. There is no escaping the experience of light and love that is to be found in relationships as well as pain and shadow. Many of your beliefs at the moment could be leading you towards dead ends, so be willing to adapt to new information and facts, then turn your dreams into reality. There is possibly a drive within you that has a need to make the most of every day, this also includes an urge to be as honest as possible with others, and something has definitely had an impact on you lately. Energetic tides are within you and a valuable and meaningful experience is soon to be set in motion. You will find that you have far more freedom at the moment to try out new ideas and activities.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Most tapas bars in Spain serve Riñones al Jerez, though at home it can be served with rice or pasta as a main meal. You can add sliced mushrooms to increase the number of portions.

Riñones al Jerez Ingredients:

serves 6 as a tapa, 4 as a supper dish

• 10 fresh lambs' kidneys • 1 big onion, chopped • 4 tablespoons olive oil • 4 oz bacon • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 2 tablespoon flour • 4 fl. oz fino dry sherry or Montilla • 1 tablespoon tomato concentrate • 2 sprigs fresh thyme • Salt and freshly ground black pepper Directions Difficulty: Intermediate Preparation time: 30 min.

Fry the onion in 2 tablespoons of oil over a low heat in a big frying pan. When it starts to soften add the diced bacon and garlic. Remove the membranes and cut out the middle cores from the kidneys, then cut them into large dices. Remove and reserve the onion and bacon from the pan and add 1-2 tablespoons more olive oil.

Put in the diced kidneys, a handful at a time, over the highest heat and stir occasionally. When they are sealed, pull them to the sides of the pan and add the next handful. When they are all sealed and coloured, return the onions and bacon, sprinkle with flour and stir in. Add the sherry, tomato concentrate and thyme and bring to a simmer. Season to taste.

LIBRA

You may have to make a stand but this is not as easy as it sounds for it will be hard to take one side of a situation without feeling like you would also like to throw the other side a paddle as well. The fact that you love to please will also create some inner turmoil – strength and certainty are the virtues you need to draw upon. You September 23rd - have many balls in the air and people in opposing directions are vying for your October 22nd attention, find your still place inside and the answers will come easier.

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

Success is yours and you are ahead of the game so the last thing you need to do now is to take needless risks and chances, even if you feel that someone is pushing you. Keep calm, keep going and stock up for the future, the idea is to plan ahead and be ready. There will be many reasons and excuses you can make for not giving your best efforts or for taking the easy way out, but if you maintain control over your wants and desires, you will shine.

SAGITTARIUS Unconditional generosity can be the very thing that is the game changer, altering the course for the better. It can create an opening or break the silence; it can cut through tension like a knife so the room and the bodies within it can breathe again. This is not about giving up or giving in, it is about letting go. November 22nd - Your voice, your thoughts, your words and your ingenuous entry will have a December 21st way of disarming another in a most delicate dilemma.

CAPRICORN You could find yourself waiting on others, things slow right down and seem to drag on, it is important that you have done everything you can do at your end and then it is just a matter of patience and determination to see things through. Prepare yourself for a romantic conversation; there are things that December 22nd - need to be said, even if it appears as though you are going around in circles, January 19th there will be light shining in.

Someone could be trying to assert their authority over you and it will cause you to run as fast as you can in the opposite direction. Even though your tendency for battle is high through the weekend, you could find that you have no way of getting your point across in a diplomatic way. The only way through this is to deal with and address emotional issues head on until something that is causing the unrest is cleared up.

There is a great deal of angst and struggle in relationships across the board, all relationship conflicts will be out on the table for review and pushed to grow and change as needed. It will come as no surprise that others will drift towards you for comfort and sanctuary. Just know that the right thing will happen for the right reasons and this will ensure that you remain solid and at peace with all that is occurring. Something precious lost in the past is about to return.

One in 10 take time off for depression One in 10 workers has taken time off because of depression, a poll of 7,000 people in seven European countries has found. The Mori survey was carried out for the European Depression Association (EDA) in the UK, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Turkey, Spain and France. Overall, 20 per cent of the 7,000 polled had received a diagnosis of depression at some point in their lives. The highest rate was in the UK, where 26 per cent had been diagnosed and the lowest in Italy, where the figure was 12 per cent. Among workers experiencing depression, those in Germany (61 per cent), Denmark (60 per cent), and Britain (58 per cent) were most likely to take time off work, while those in Turkey were the

least likely (25 per cent). In 2010, researchers estimated the cost of depression at €92 billion across the EU, with lost productivity due to time off or under-performance accounting for most of the costs. Across the countries surveyed, one in four of those with depression said they did not tell their employer. One in three of them said they were

worried it could put their job at risk. A third of the 792 managers surveyed said they had no formal support in place to help them deal with employees who were experiencing depression. Dr Vincenzo Costigliola, president of the EDA, said "The results of the survey show that much needs to

be done in raising awareness and supporting employees and employers in recognising and managing depression in the workplace.” MEP Stephen Hughes, who holds the Employment and Social Affairs portfolio in the European Parliament, backs better support and protection for workers. He said: "Depression in

the workplace is an employment and societal challenge that is causing serious damage and which

requires attention and action from the European Union."

Despite his successful run of concerts in Europe, George has had to back out of his Australian leg of his Symphonia tour citing ‘major anxiety problems, adding that it “breaks my heart to have to pull out at the last minute. He said that he had enjoyed his tour so far, however "unfortunately, I seriously underestimated how difficult this year would be". George wrote: "I have tried in vain to work my way through the trauma that the doctors who saved

my life warned me I would experience. "They recommended complete rest and the type of post-traumatic counselling which is available in cases like mine but I'm afraid I believed (wrongly) that making music and getting out there to perform for the audiences that bring me such joy would be therapy enough in itself." However, he still hopes to tour the UK in October and will seek help for his anxiety problems in the meantime.

Nick takes over from Chris NEW! A "nervous and excited" Nick Grimshaw has taken over Radio 1's Breakfast Show. The 28-year-old DJ, who replaced Chris Moyles after the end of his eight-and-a-

half-year stint, welcomed listeners to a "a brand new breakfast show". He said he would last in the job "just until the country uprises and I get thrown back to the nighttime". Grimshaw said he was "nervous and excited" but "desperate to get on with it" and kicked off his first show by playing Paris by Jay-Z and Kanye West. He played a radio edit of the

famously foul-mouthed track and joked that if he had played the full version it would have been "the world's shortest stint on the Radio 1 breakfast show, three and a half minutes".

Sabinillas

Entering Sabinillas from the East on the A7, across from 'Lidls', there is an abandoned estate agent's showroom.

routes off the A7 to Gibraltar; both lead through congested traffic either in San Roque or the La Linea industrial poligono.

When it was opened during the last building boom, part of the agent's spiel was, "Sabinillas is just 20 minutes from Gibraltar International Airport"!

'Speedy Gonzales' might well be crazy enough to AVERAGE 85kph to get from Sabinillas to La Linea in 25 minutes, (let alone 20!) negotiating five traffic circles and two major interchanges, but even 'Speedy' has to allow at least ten minutes to reach the tail end of the queue of cars at 'The Frontier', plus anything up to three hours (depending on the season and time of day) to get through Customs & Immigration and across the air base runway, air

Since you know the road, I was surprised to read in your item about a Manilva camping site (Edn 194), that you too quoted as "25 minutes to Gibraltar". For your readers who are unfamiliar with the area however, there are just two

D. Petrie I believe the article in your last week’s edition re the reply to Gill Scott (Name supplied) was actually written by A.A. Pratt. (A. A. for An Arrogant). It is perhaps unfortunate that the author has some of his own facts wrong, but I won't waste time or too much print regarding this matter. His comments re South Africa show a simplistic ignorance of the country. Spain has indeed used EU funds, in exactly the same way as has the UK. An interesting comment referring to Gill Scott living in Spain for so many years and assuming Gill Scott can

Changing the subject slightly: one day perhaps the tunnel under the eastern end of the runway will materialize, but I wonder how traffic from Spain will reach it, as there is no direct access road from La Linea! Editor says: Ah, yes, but if you don’t join the queue to get into Gibraltar, park the car, walk across the border then either walk into town or get the bus you’ll find you can easily do it in the time I said. And all without breaking any speed limits. Of course, like any journey it depends on traffic.

Alhaurin el Grande speak and read Spanish. I would have assumed that living in the country for 18 years the author would be able to speak and read the language (Hello, Thank you, etc.!!) but he states arrogantly he does not wish to learn the language of his adopted country. I suspect that this is just an excuse for being old and intellectually challenged to learn the language and in this regard of course he is exactly

Stargazing

traffic permitting, and into Gibraltar itself.

the same as those foreign immigrants into the UK who cannot speak English (and do not wish to learn?). I lived amongst, and taught very many Spanish people in London. They could all speak English and were only too willing to learn; realising that to fully integrate into society of the country in which you reside, it makes it far easier and more convenient if you can converse in the language.

Bright Comet Headed Our Way! Last Thursday 27th September, astronomers announced the discovery of a brand new comet. And if predictions are correct then this one might turn out to be a cracker!

C

alled Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON), this comet is about as far away as Jupiter right now, but it’s expected to buzz past the Sun late next year and, if it stays intact, it may become as bright as the full Moon.

T

he comet was discovered by a team of Russian astronomers at the International Scientific Optical Network (ISON). At the time of discovery the comet was at a magnitude +18, and so is currently beyond the reach of amateur telescopes. But the orbital path has been calculated, and it shows that the comet will come amazingly close to the Sun– just 2 million km— on November 28th 2013.

T

he comet should become visible to the naked eye by the middle of next year as it gets closer to the Sun. And by midNovember through December 2013 and into January 2014, the comet may reach negative magnitudes, possibly as bright as –11 to –16, which means it will be visible during the day!

U

nlike planets and asteroids, comets are not made of solid rock but instead have been described as being more like a ‘dirty snowball’. It is believed that millions of comets exist at the very edge of the solar system in an area known as the Oort cloud, so named because the Dutch astronomer Jan Oort first proposed the theory back in 1950. He suggested that comets were the remnants from the creation of the solar system which now cling tenuously to the Sun’s gravity about ¼ the distance between the Sun and its nearest neighbouring star.

I

f something disrupts the fragile orbit of the comet it can gradually begin to fall in toward the inner solar system drawn by the Sun’s gravity. As it gets closer to the Sun its speed will increase due to the stronger pull of gravity and the heat from the Sun begins to vaporise the comet producing the associated comet’s tail. Some comets crash into the Sun, some are thrown back out into deep space never to be seen again, while others are thrown into an elongated orbit around the Sun, returning time and time again, sometimes after a few years but often after a lengthy period of anything up to hundreds of years. The most famous comet of all, Halley’s Comet, returns every 76 years or so.

T

he comet’s tail can stretch for many millions of miles but always points away from the sun no matter which way the comet is travelling. And so if a comet is travelling away from the Sun then it will travel tail first. As there is no air in space then the tail doesn’t behave like the smoke coming from a steam train, it is the Sun’s rays that create the tail.

B

ecause their composition is not exactly known, each comet is unpredictable. So no one can say for sure how bright this comet will become, or if it will even survive its close encounter with the Sun. Many comets are torn apart during such a close approach to the Sun and it is possible that this may happen with Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON). Still, this is promising news. And this comet, unlike many recent bright comets, will be best viewed at midnorthern latitudes.

S

outhern stargazers will get their own bright comet next year. Comet PanSTARRS is expected to become visible without optical aid next March, and come within 45 million km of the Sun on March 9, 2013.

C

omets are at lot more prevalent than you would think, right now there are six comets visible in the night sky, but they are all too faint to be seen without a powerful telescope. If a comet has made several journeys into the inner solar system then, like a frozen snowball in springtime, they have shed much of their outer surface making the tail less impressive. It is believed that Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) is on its first trip toward the Sun and so contains plenty of loose surface material primed to create a beautiful tail.

S

o get your binoculars, telescopes, and cameras ready. Not since 1996 when comet Hale-Bopp graced our skies has such a comet been so eagerly awaited. Enjoy your Stargazing!

Troubled times ahead for European car markets

As bad as European car sales have been this year, they're about to get worse. That was the verdict from industry executives gathered at the Paris Motor show last week. Several executives said the atmosphere reminded them of the 2009 Detroit auto show - an industry rolling out new models but knowing that it faced a miserable year. "The European car market is a disaster," said Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne. "It has plunged off a precipice that doesn't seem to have bottomed out yet. The prospects are anything but rosy."

Pedrosa stays in chase for the title Dani Pedrosa kept the pressure up on MotoGP title favourite Jorge Lorenzo with a dominant victory at Aragon. The Repsol Honda star seized the lead from Lorenzo on the seventh lap and never looked back, powering away to take his fourth triumph of the season by 6.4 seconds from Lorenzo. Pedrosa, whose hopes of

the title took a battering when he was taken out of

contention on the opening lap at Misano, has now closed the gap to the Yamaha rider to 33 points with four rounds of the championship remaining. His team faced a race against time to completely rebuild his RC213V before today's race, but Pedrosa made amends in the best way possible.

Lorenzo remains a strong favourite to lift his second premier class crown, but Pedrosa served notice this afternoon that he will battle all the way. “In the race I remained calm and was able to focus, Jorge began very fast in the early laps but I was able to stay with him and then after a few laps I saw I could increase the pace,” said Pedrosa, who celebrated his 27th birthday on Saturday. ”I passed him and tried to find my own rhythm. I was concentrating so hard that I almost forgot that it

was a race, then I realised there were only four laps to go! Cal Crutchlow admitted he tried all he could to wrestle the final podium place at Aragon away from team-mate Andrea Dovizioso today. Crutchlow twice edged ahead on the final two laps but Dovizioso immediately re-took the position to seize his sixth MotoGP podium of the season. The pair enjoyed a race-long duel at the Spanish circuit but Dovizioso gained the upper hand in the end, leaving Crutchlow to

graciously concede he was fairly beaten by his Tech 3 Yamaha partner.

that entry-level BMWs from the new small car line-up will come with front-wheel drive and the rear wheels are powered by an electric motor. The platform is known as

UKL1 and will be used in two wheelbase lengths both for the next-generation Mini line-up and the new range of entry-level BMWs to join the 1-series line-up from late 2013.

“Obviously it would have been great to be back on the podium after the disappointment of Misano but credit to Andrea because he did a great job as always and I'm taking nothing away from him,” said Crutchlow. “I did my best in those last two laps to take third but I knew he had a little better exit speed than me coming out of Turn 15 and that's how it turned out.”

Hamilton was left with Paris little option by McLaren Motor Show

It was confirmed on Thursday that Hamilton will join Mercedes for the 2013 season after electing to quit the team that has guided his career since he was 13-years-old. The move will see Hamilton leave one of the most successful teams in F1 to join one that has just had a single win since taking over Brawn GP ahead of the 2010 season, but Hill said he felt a range of issues had led to the Briton making the decision.

Long time friends

Hamilton would be joining them on a three-year deal from the start of the 2013 Formula One season, ending a 14-year association with McLaren. The move was dubbed a mistake by McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh. However,

three-time

former world champion Lauda told BBC Radio Five's Sportsweek programme: "The real discussion was, 'why should I leave a competitive car where my life is easier in the future?' My argument was, 'if you're looking for a new challenge then frankly the Mercedes team is one'."

Lauda added: "Thinking the other way round, if Michael Schumacher could not get the Mercedes team – for three years running – up front and you next year are doing much better, this makes a huge impact on your personality and people will rate you much higher than you are rated now.”

“Lewis has been like a caged bird at McLaren,” he told the Daily Mail. “He'd been managed to within an inch of his life. I can't blame him for looking to move elsewhere. Lewis needed to leave McLaren to stretch his wings.”

CARS WANTED

Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda revealed the role he played in luring Lewis Hamilton to make the switch from McLaren, reiterating the move was all about providing the British driver with a new challenge.

Rain stops play but only Malaga cruise to 4-0 win for a day Betis got off to the worst possible start as keeper Casto was sent off after just 11 minutes for bringing down Eliseu inside the area and Joaquin confidently stroked home the penalty.

Costa del Sol Charity Cricket Fest at The Cartama Oval Whilst the rest of Spain was reeling with the horrendous weather conditions, the Cartama Oval cricket ground declared itself a rain free zone – well almost. No play looked possible on the Thursday but both teams from the UK were adamant that they were only here for the cricket and cricket there would be. The scheduled 35 overs per side commenced shortly after 12noon. Earlswood CC won the toss and elected to bat. However it was obvious due to the damp conditions that this would not be a high scoring game and this proved to be true. Earlswood CC had only posted 43 runs on the scoreboard after 13 overs with the loss of 4 wickets. Andy Bostock followed by Dave Smith had different ideas, putting on a very respectable partnership of 60 runs. However wickets tumbled after the loss of Smith (50) and Earlswood finally reached a modest total of 159. There were numerous breaks forced by the heavier rain and many cups of hot Yorkshire Tea specially donated and imported from the tea fields of Harrogate were consumed to keep up the temperatures. After the mid afternoon’s lunch break it was Chiswick and Latymers opportunity to reply and they set off at a whirlwind pace with Nush Alwis and Amrik Bhatia accumulating 66 runs off only 8 overs. At this stage the result looked a formality but

Earlswood decided that a fight back was on. The fight back was led by Stephen Bradley with a great spell of 4/16 off 8 overs and some excellent textbook fielding from the Birmingham boys on tour. Unfortunately for Earlswood, a last wicket partnership of Khulli Bhatia(36 not out and Craig 23 not out), saw Chiswick overtake the total with only two overs remaining. A fabulous day’s cricket played in the spirit of the game. Friday’s cricket was cancelled. The atrocious weather conditions putting an end to play. Seville CC were unable to make their way down due to the appalling road conditions. Both the UK touring sides took the opportunity to work out in the gym topping up their fitness levels in anticipation of the Saturday finale. The out of character overnight deluge did its best to curtail the final day’s cricket. The outfield of the Cartama Oval in some places was 5 inches deep in water and it was considered at one stage that it might be better to rent out rowing boats. The marquee had been submerged and the steps to the pavilion

had collapsed. However after hours and hours of hard work there was a possibility of cricket. The rain had abated and despite the reducing level of water the outfield was still flooded. It was suggested by Nushan Alwis that if they were in Sri Lanka they would continue to play in those conditions and once again Chiswick, Earlswood and Andalucia representatives decided that the show would go on, with the fielding side in bare feet and shorts, and swimming trunks worn instead of trousers!! This definitely was a first for the guys from the UK and Andalucia – nothing like this had been witnessed on the Costa del Sol before, (although not confirmed). What an afternoon of entertainment with some absolutely brilliant cricket performances! Fifty overs of fun cricket and at one stage the sun decided to appear. Despite everything It had been another great day to end this Septembers Festival of Cricket. The result was unimportant! report by Tim Meal

Betis had two players sent off and conceded a penalty against Atletico Madrid in midweek, and manager Pepe Mel's mood was not about to get any better when Casto was deemed to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity when he brought down Eliseu as the Portuguese defender tried to go round him. Adrian replaced sacrificed Salvador Agra to make his La Liga debut, but his first job was to pick the ball out of the net as Joaquin sent him the wrong way from the spot. When the second goal did arrive, again there was a just a hint of controversy about it. Great link-up play between Isco,

Eliseu is brought down by Betis keeper Casto

Saviola and Portillo freed the latter on the right side of the box but he looked to be in an offside position as he squared for Saviola to tap in his third goal in five games for Malaga. The home side remained completely in control after the break and were only denied a third before the hour mark by a remarkable scambled goalline clearance by Nacho Martin from a point blank Demichelis' effort. Castro then had the visitors' best chance of the

Wayne’s Poker Last week I asked: “What would you do here?” In late position we are dealt Ad /Qd, the player under the gun raises who is a tight aggressive player then the next player bets who is a less aggressive player. We have a choice. We can call the 3 bet, 4 bet (a re-raise of the 3rd bet) or fold. The sensible action is to fold! Under the gun is a poor position to play from so we have a tight player raising, we have to put in on a high pocket pair or even AK, then the 3 bet by the loose player. He must know that he has a hand so, what does he have? AQ is not the nuts, and we don’t want to be calling large free flop bets with it, AK has us crushed as does AA or KK and it’s a coin-flip with any under-pocket pair. Let’s call the 3 bet then. Never ever flat

a 3 bet in this situation. What if the first raiser shoves? We have to fold here. Just to add in this situation, I would also give strong consideration to folding AK as we have a good chance of AA or KK from one of these players. Question: “What would you do here?” We are in a tournament with 6 players at the table on the button (dealer position), we only have 10 big blinds and look down at a 7, one player has limped into the pot by flat calling the big blind, the rest folded. My answers and reasons next week. More poker terminology: Limped in: when we just flat call the big blind bet

Davis Love defends Ryder Cup decisions Davis Love says he has no regrets over his Ryder Cup gameplan despite his United States team collapsing to defeat against Europe on Sunday. Love's US team lost 14½-13½ having led 10-4 on Saturday. "We were playing so well, everyone on our team was playing so well, I wouldn't have done anything different," said Love. "All went to plan. We were four ahead. The plan worked the first two days, it just didn't work on Sunday."

Incredible comeback to win Ryder Cup European captain Jose Maria Olazabal didn't even bother trying to hide the tears as he looked skyward. As first one, then two and then three matches turned in Europe's favour on the last two holes, and 13 years after sadly watching the U.S. celebrate its epic comeback at Brookline, the Europeans had one of their own to celebrate. The day though had started in extraordinary fashion when Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy only just made it to the tee in Centro Ecuestre Lauro Golf La Alqueria Riding lessons at all levels. time, needing a police escort after he got his start time wrong. But oh boy did he deliver, along with Scotland’s Paul Lawrie and England’s Luke Donald, who got the team on the winning way. And the new talisman of the European team Ian Poulter pulled off an amazing comeback of his own, winning the last two holes, as did Justin Rose, a birdie-birdie finish to beat Phil Mickelson.

Ian Poulter, just didn’t let go

Sergio Garcia also won his last two holes with pars to beat Jim Furyk. Furyk had beaten Garcia at that Brookline match in a pivotal game, and here looked shell shocked after missing his par attempt at the last. Europe won the cup after Germany’s Martin Kaymer holed a knee knocker at the last hole. Kaymer gave German golf some redemption from Kiawah Island in 1991, when countryman Bernhard Langer missed a par putt from about the same length that allowed the Americans to win. "I did think about him, especially when I walked around the hole and read the putt from the other side," Kaymer said. "So I thought, 'OK, it's not going to happen again, it's not going to happen again.' And to be honest with you,

I didn't really think about missing. There was only one choice you have. You have to make it." "What you did out there today was outstanding," Olazabal told his team at the closing ceremony. "You believed and you delivered. And I'm very proud that you have kept Europe's hands on this Ryder Cup. All men die, but not all men live. And you made me feel alive again this week." Then, Olazabal bowed his head and closed his eyes as they filled with tears, and the European fans sensed what was coming next. He didn't have to say a word. They said it for him. "Seve, Seve, Seve," they began to chant. By Mike Kerrigan

England not good enough Inexperienced England failed to measure up in defence of their ICC World Twenty20 title – and, in the words of their captain Stuart Broad, were "not quite good enough" throughout. England's exit was confirmed on Monday night when, despite a maiden Twenty20 international half-century from Samit Patel, they lost by 19 runs to Sri Lanka. Broad said: "You can look at the missed opportunities. But I think throughout the whole tournament, we've not

quite been good enough." Two years after Paul Collingwood led his country to their first International Cricket Council trophy – in this sprint format – Broad's team must head home before the semi-final stage. Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga undermined England's chase of 169 for six, almost from the outset, with three wickets in his first over – on the way to career-best figures of five for 31 in the final Super Eight match at Pallekele.

Only victory would have taken England through to the knockout stages – and although Patel (67) and even Graeme Swann, with some late hitting, got them closer than had seemed likely, they never looked likely to prevail. "It's very disappointing to have gone out, because I believe we do have the firepower in that changing room to go far," added the captain. "Coming to the ground today, knowing you win three games and you win a 'World Cup', you're not that far away. It's frustratingly close."

Ferrari have narrowed their choice for Fernando Alonso's team-mate next year down to three drivers. The team's intention is to retain current driver Felipe Massa, but Force India drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta are options. Massa has reignited his chances of keeping the seat with some strong performances in recent races. But the team want to wait until at least mid October after the Korean Grand Prix before deciding. Both German Hulkenberg and Scot di Resta have produced impressive performances this season.

FOOTBALL

The special one will return to England Jose Mourinho says he will return to English football when his reign as Real Madrid manager ends, but the Portuguese insists he is happy at the Bernabeu. While the exChelsea boss is contracted to Real until 2016, he feels his next job will be back in the Premier League. "I just say openly that, for many reasons, after this the next step will be England," the 49-yearold told CNN. "When? I don't know, I don't have an idea. I'm so happy in this moment to be manager of the best club in the world."
