ICKHAM’S
WORLD No more cake
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
What a tragedy ... the Olde English Tearooms in Mijas Pueblo is shut so there goes Rose and her absolutely delicious cakes. I would like to thank Rose for all the goodies I have been given when delivering the papers to her on a Wednesday and wish her, Clifford and staff all the best in whatever they decide to do. One of our readers, Jack Griggs brought me in a disc of photos of the flooding up between Alora and Pizarra that we reported on last week. Even though we read about such things, you can’t imagine the sheer force of nature until you see it for yourself. The old green bridge has gone, ending up in a mangled mess along the river and people have lost their lives. I remember watching the plane as it hit the buildings in New York. I was at home doing the ironing when my friend phoned and told me to turn on the TV quick. It was utterly shocking to watch it as it happened and we knew people that were in the building at the time. Then there was the Tsunami again I was watching it as it was happening on the TV and will never forget the white van with the little car behind it unaware of what was about to hit them. I was yelling at the screen: “Turn round and drive, get out of there.” But of course, it wouldn’t have made any difference and there’s still someone we knew quite well that was there and we’ve never heard of since. Makes you think what exactly is important in your life and this recession isn’t really one of them. We must all be thankful we’re alive.

Skydiver postpones 23-mile jump once again It’s not a good idea to publish an unfinished story but the feat is interesting enough in itself – even if at press time we don’t know how it ends. Baumgartner will jump out of a balloon at more than 120,000ft (23 miles) above Roswell, New Mexico. In the near vacuum at that altitude, he should accelerate beyond about 690mph (1,110km/h) within 40 seconds. If all goes well, he will open a parachute near the ground to land softly in the desert, 10 minutes later. The 43-year-old adventurer - famous for jumping off skyscrapers - is under no illusions about the dangers he faces. Where he is going, the air pressure is less than 2% of what it is at sea level, and it is impossible to breathe without an oxygen supply. Others who have tried to break the existing records for the highest, fastest and longest freefalls have lost their lives in the process. Baumgartner said:
"If something goes wrong, the only thing that might help you is God.”
of the orange protective clothing worn by shuttle astronauts on launch.
"Because if you run out of luck, if you run out of skills, there is nothing left and you have to really hope He is not going to let you down."
Although the jump has the appearance of another Baumgartner stunt, his team prefers to stress its high scientific relevance. The researchers on the Red Bull Stratos project believe it will inform the development of new systems for emergency evacuation from highperformance, high-altitude vehicles. Nasa and its spacecraft manufacturers have asked to be kept informed.
The absolute mark for the highest skydive is held by retired US Air Force Colonel Joe Kittinger. He leapt from a balloon at an altitude of 102,800ft in August 1960. Now in his eighties, Kittinger is part of Baumgartner's team and will be the only voice talking to him over the radio during the two-and-a-half hour ascent and the 10-minute descent. Engineers have done everything possible to limit the risks. They have built the Austrian a special pressurised capsule to carry him under the helium balloon. He will also be wearing a next-generation, fullpressure suit, an evolution
There are a few examples of pilots being ejected in supersonic airflows when their planes broke apart in the sky, but there is no detailed data on what happens to the human body as it goes supersonic and then, as it slows, goes subsonic again. Baumgartner will be fitted with instruments to acquire
this new data. The concern is that he might be destabilised by shockwaves passing over his body, and that these might throw him into an uncontrolled spin. Engineers have incorporated an automatic device in his gear that would deploy a drogue stabilisation chute if he gets into trouble. But the team's medical director, former Shuttle flight surgeon Dr Jon Clark, hopes the stiffness of the pressure suit itself will suffice. He said: "We don't know what the human body will endure accelerating through the sound barrier in coming back down without the aid of aircraft. And that is really the essence of the scientific
goal of this mission." A suite of high-definition cameras will follow the action. Some of these will be attached to Baumgartner himself. But wary of broadcasting a tragedy to worldwide TV audiences, the organisers have put a 20-second delay on the live video feed. Four GPS systems in the suit will gather the dive data required to satisfy the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) that records have indeed been broken. A BBC/National Geographic documentary is being made about the project and will probably be aired in November.
Coast Law reform saves seaside homes The Cabinet has approved a reform of the Coast Law extending an amnesty for the owners of beachfront properties that would otherwise have to be demolished. Owners of properties who were in breach of the current legislation have been given a 30-year concession of use that was due to expire in 2018. The reform of the current law, passed in 1988, also creates a special regime for 11 areas, which
will be taken out of the public domain. It also established four-year concessions for beach bars and restaurants. The text of the draft reform said the current legislation “has tolerated outcomes that are not acceptable in environmental terms,” adding that “time has consolidated certain situations,” and that the law has “prompted mistrust and uncertainty”. It also says: “The aim of the

reform is to avoid the risk of homeowners losing their property rights in the short term, and particularly bearing in mind the difficulties this could create for foreigners.”
legislation also establishes a special boundary demarcation for the Balearic island of Formentera, “given its special geographical configuration”.
Owners of beach properties now have the right to sell them and to carry out refurbishments with prior permission provided these do involve any increase in the size of the home. The new

1000s protest at government cuts
Red Cross to launch a special appeal Thousands of people took to the streets of 57 Spanish cities on Sunday to protest against the government’s spending cuts and anti-crisis policies. The simultaneous marches were organised by the two main trade unions, the UGT and the CCOO, and around 150 other organisations, who warned that “if the government does not significantly change its policies and attitude” the next step will be a general strike. It was the second mass protest sponsored by the unions, following a rally on September 15th. Before resorting to a general strike, which would probably take place on November 14th, the unions are demanding a referendum.
In a statement read out on Sunday, the unions said “there is no question that we are dealing with electoral fraud” arguing that the Partido Popular (PP), which won last November’s elections with an absolute majority, did not include the present austerity measures in its campaign promises. They also accuse Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of taking decisions he had promised not to, such as raising taxes. Demonstrators also complained about the government’s alleged attempts to turn public
protests into a “public order problem,” expressing concern about “the authoritarian attitude it is adopting” following the Surround Congress rally on September 25th, when one government official called for a reform of laws relating to public protests.
The Red Cross is to make its first ever public appeal in Spain today, Wednesday, October 10th, asking for donations of money to help 300,000 of the most vulnerable people affected by the economic crisis. Before the crisis, the Cruz Roja focused on helping immigrants but, with one in four adults out of work, more and more Spanish families now rely on food hand-outs. The Dia de la Banderita (Little Flag Day) appeal, to be held in 30 of the country's provinces, is accompanied by a video showing a Spanish family – a father, son and daughter – sharing an omelette made from a single egg. Their mood lifts when the

15,000 apply for 150 factory jobs
Police foiled an attack on students at the University of the Balearic Isles (UIB) when they arrested a 21-year- old student as he received delivery of explosives at his home in Palma de Mallorca last week. They said Juan Manuel Morales Sierra, an electronics student, had been planning a "Columbine-style" massacre. He had been under close surveillance by detectives for five months after he was identified as a risk through posts on his personal blog, in which he said he planned to "do a Columbine", and expressed admiration for the perpetrators of the 1999 US attack that killed 12 students and a teacher.

more than 15,000 people looking for work replied to an advert by the Adecco employment agency in the Getafe district for 150 vacancies at the John deere agricultural machinery factory on the outskirts of madrid. Apparently, most of the applicants had no idea what positions they were applying for or what wages to expect, an Adecco spokesman said. One 23-year-old applicant said he had no idea what the job was “just that it was the possibility of a regular job”. the spokesman said the agency had been overwhelmed by the huge response, and is now trying to narrow the list down to 1,500 before considering suitable applicants for the positions. possibility of suicide in the aftermath of the massacre". The statement said that after trying to buy weapons illegally "he then requested a gun licence to be able to buy weapons legally but was unable to obtain one. His ultimate objective was to obtain a large amount of explosives and chemicals because – as he explained on his own
blog – he had detailed knowledge of how to manufacture all types of explosives." A police spokesman said Morales was a "loner" who had adopted a "goth" style and was obsessed with computer games and weapons, adding that there was no indication he was acting through any "set ideological reasons".
Apparently, he had moved out of his family’s home some months ago and lived alone in a small flat in the centre of Palma de Majorca, earning money by playing online poker. He had studied electronics at a technical training college and was currently taking a course in business administration but had no connection with the university itself.
the German pharmaceutical company Bayer announced last week that it had decided to concentrate its production of aspirin in its factory in Langreo, which has been the company’s main aspirin producer for decades. until now it had produced only one of the ingredients in aspirin with four other factories around the world producing the rest. But with an investment of €6 million, the Langreo factory will soon be producing all the ingredients. Every day, some 200 million people around the world take an aspirin tablet. Bayer recently celebrated its 70th anniversary.

World News EU rebrands green energy campaign The EU has launched a campaign aimed at showing how low-carbon solutions can improve quality of life on the grounds that policies to cut greenhouse gases will only work if individuals share the vision of a low-carbon society. A European Commission official said at the launch in London: "It's perhaps been a bit too much doom and gloom in the past on climate so we are now emphasising the need to inspire people." The EU-wide campaign, called "Worldulike", will run until 2014. It is being transmitted through the Commission’s website and also Facebook and Twitter and will highlight positive examples of tackling climate change throughout Europe, including schemes to use excess body heat from one building to warm another (Sweden); allowing
neighbours to use your car (UK); and generate energy from landfill (Latvia). Media and marketing experts have criticised politicians in the past for failing to show people how climate policies could make their own lives better in the short term, as well as reducing planetary risk in the longer term. The EU Climate Commissioner, Connie Hedegaard, said awareness of climate change varied widely throughout the EU. One of her officials admitted that the UK was suffering from something of a media backlash against

Police hurt in rubbish dump clashes More than 50 people, most of them policemen, have been injured in protests over the reopening of a rubbish dump in Guellala on the holiday island of Djerba. Residents had been promised that the unofficial dump would remain closed. interior ministry spokesman Khaled Tarrouche said trouble flared when the local authorities decided to reopen the dump until 2013. He said police were pelted with rocks and firebombs and several police cars were also set alight before the crowd was dispersed with tear gas. Mr Tarrouche said reinforcements were sent from the capital Tunis to help quell the riot. Guellala (pop. 13,000) is a popular tourist destination.

Chavez re-elected in Venezuela President Hugo Chavez won 55 per cent of the vote in Sunday’s election to secure a fourth term in office. Opponent Henrique Capriles won 45 per cent, reducing Chavez’s victory margin from 27 points in 2006 to just 10 points. It was the closest fought election since Chavez first took over in 1999, with a record high turnout of 81 per cent. Given the opposition’s show of
strength, Chavez recognised that his new government would need "to respond with greater efficacy and efficiency to the needs of our people", adding: "I promise you I'll be a better president." Addressing supporters from the balcony of the presidential palace, Chavez pledged Venezuela would continue its "march towards democratic socialism". Capriles
congratulated Chavez but told opposition supporters not to feel defeated: "We have planted many seeds across Venezuela and I know that these seeds are going to produce many trees. I will continue working to build one country." He said he hoped Chavez would recognise that almost half the country disagreed with his policies. Chavez, 58, was diagnosed with cancer last year but says he is now fully recovered.
North Korea warns US on missiles In a statement on Monday, North Korea said it has missiles that can hit US bases in Japan and Guam, noting that the US mainland was within its "scope of strike". On Sunday, South Korea had unveiled a missile deal with the US and announced that it would
almost triple the range of its own missile system. North Korea is thought to be working on a long-range missile, but two recent tests ended in failure. South Korea said the failed rocket launches – in April 2009 and April 2012 – were tests related to the development of the long-
range Taepodong-2 missile system. The two Koreas remain technically at war following the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in an armistice. The US has more than 28,000 troops in South Korea and provides security guarantees for its ally.

Britain will be asked to pay almost £1 billion to plug a financial shortfall because the European Union has spent more than its budget allocation, according to Britain’s Daily Express newspaper. Chancellor to make further welfare cuts in Britain British Chancellor George Osborne has vowed to continue to work toward eliminating Britain’s national deficit, by slashing a further £10 billion from welfare payments. He has said he is determined to finish the job he started.
The Royal Mail in Britain is determined to help the less well-off find the money to send their Christmas cards this year by selling Christmas stamps to people receiving benefit payments at last year’s prices. As many of them will theoretically have less money in their pockets this
year than last it would appear to be little more than a token gesture by Santa at the Royal Mail. Stamp prices increased to 60p (first class) and 50p (second) in April – they were 46p and 36p. The amount of the increase was thought by many observers to be too much in the first place.

Toll charges Business leaders in Britain are suggesting that new methods of road charging be put in place along with tolls on some major roads in England to ease congestion of the road network. Under the plans suggested by the Confederation of British Industry, road users would have a proportion of their motoring taxes converted to a user charge, which would be controlled by an independent roads regulator. It would allow access to England’s motorways and major A roads. Tolling would be required in addition to this. The confederation said private investment was necessary as there was a £10billion shortfall in funding for Highways Agency projects and there was likely to be a reduction in motor tax income because more cheaper-to-tax fuel-efficient vehicles were being built. It estimated the British economy was losing £8 billion a year as a result of congestion on the roads.

No escape for Ian Brady The child killer died for several minutes while in the company of his psychiatrist during the summer it has been revealed by his confidant Jackie Powell, the same woman who claimed he had given her a letter revealing the location of the body of one of his victims. However, despite extensive searches by the police to find the letter, none has ever been found. The Moors murderer had a “Do not resuscitate” instruction on his files but he was brought back to life using a defibrillator after his heart had stopped beating during a seizure. Brady, 74, is said to be in pain from damage caused
to his ribs during the resuscitation and is furious that his express wishes were not adhered to. He has been campaigning for years for the right to starve himself to death. Brady was jailed for life in 1966 after he and his then girlfriend, Myra Hindley, were found guilty of murdering three children and accused of two further murders. Brady has always refused to tell where police could find the remains of one of their victims, Keith Bennett, believed to be on Saddleworth Moor. Keith’s mother, Winnie Johnson who died recently, never having learned the location of her son’s body, was buried with his glasses.

Police women’s funerals take place A funeral service was held last Wednesday for PC Nicola Hughes one of two police officers who were killed in the line of duty in a gun and grenade attack when they had been called out to investigate a suspected burglary in Hattersley, Tameside, Greater Manchester on September 18th. The funeral, with full police honours and several thousand people attending took place at Manchester Cathedral at 1pm and officers from forces across the country had volunteered to cover the shifts of Greater Manchester Police colleagues so they could attend the service. PC Hughes joined the police force in 2009. Her family said she wanted to make a difference and was doing a job she loved. Fellow officers described their young colleague as a chatterbox, someone always smiling, with a bubbly, infectious personality. Her funeral was followed by a private service. And the funeral service for PC Fiona Bone, 32, from Sale in Manchester, took place at Manchester Cathedral last Thursday. Inside the cathedral was
reserved for family, friends and colleagues but the service was relayed to the cathedral gardens so that the many members of the public who had turned up to pay their respects could listen to it. The pair of young police officers were killed by wanted man Dale Cregan, 29. Cregan is currently on remand, charged with the ir murders. The officers at both funerals were joined by hundreds of members of the public who answered a call from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) for "decent people" to stand shoulder to shoulder with the force. The normally bustling Deansgate in the centre of Manchester fell silent to honour the two PCs and hundreds of uniformed police officers, heads bowed, lined the route of the courtege to the cathedral with six officers on horseback forming a guard of honour. As the funeral cortege of PC Bone arrived at the cathedral spontaneous applause rang out and a lone Scottish
bagpiper, Detective Sergeant Jim Gray, a fellow officer with Greater Manchester Police (GMP), played Flowers of the Forest, a traditional funeral lament. PC Bone lived in Sale, Greater Manchester with her partner Clare Curran and Claire’s daughter whom she had recently adopted. The couple were in the processes of planning their civil partnership. On the day she died, she had spoken with Miss Curran to discuss who to invite to the ceremony and was said to be “so happy” with her life. And the officer's family, who live on the Isle of Man, paid tribute to "a wonderful daughter, sister, partner and parent". PC Bone will have a private burial in Scotland, where she was brought up and considered her home, attended only by close family and friends.

Costly hotel demolition Foundation for foreign patients created
Agriculture minister Miguel Arias Cañete has announced that the demolition of the Hotel Algarrobico in the Cabo de Gata–Nijar Nature Park in Almería will cost more than €7 million, a sum that the Junta de Andalucia’s agriculture department
already has available.
The decision to demolish the hotel after a long drawn-out fight between the regional and local authorities has pleased ecologists but it has angered the local people, who hoped the
huge hotel would bring lots of tourists to the area and provide a high number of jobs. The Junta and the central government in Madrid will share the cost of restoring the site to its original state after the hotel is demolished.
Door-to-door glass collection Malaga City Council has announced that it will introduce door-to-door collection of glass in the historical centre in a few weeks time, to free up the
underground containers for organic rubbish needed to cope with the growing number of visitors to the area. The move is designed mainly to help the bars and
restaurants in the area and will not cost the council a penny as the Limasa glass recycling company will collect the glass for free.

The Malaga Health Foundation has been created with the objective of attracting foreign patients to private health centres on the Costa del Sol. The project began to take shape more than a year ago when a foreign heart surgeon saw the possibilities offered by the Costa del Sol, such as first class private health care, a wide variety of hotels and a benign climate. One of the foundation’s promoters is Dr Miguel Such, head of the cardiovascular surgery service at the Hospital Clinico, who said the objective was to combine both tourism and health services. He said he expected the project to generate some €300
million a year within three years. The EU is expected to approve a guideline next year that would allow
people to be attended at the health centre of their choice which would give the foundation a tremendous boost, Dr Such said.

Queen visits flood disaster areas After getting a bird’s eye view from a helicopter of one of the areas devastated by the heavy rains just under two weeks ago, Queen Sofia landed in Villanueva del Rosario last Friday, accompanied by several regional and local government officials. Before entering the Casa de Cultura for the official reception, the Queen approached a group of children calling “Sofia, Sofia” to shake their hands and chat with them. At the reception, she said she was impressed by what she called the “Dantesque” effects of the floods and afterwards gave her personal condolences to many of the local residents who had turned out to greet her. Cabinet approves anti-missile shield The Cabinet last Friday gave its approval for the United States to install an anti-missile shield at the military base in rota, Cádiz, where US armed forces are stationed. The government has given defence minister Pedro morenés the authority to negotiate and sign the protocol of the joint US-Spanish treaty with US defence Secretary leon Panetta at this week’s naTO meeting in Brussels. according to the pre-agreement reached in July by Spanish and US officials, the United States will bring in four arleigh Burke guided missile destroyers (ddgs), with an additional 1,100 military officers in 2014. The “main mission” of the ddgs will be to stop any potential attacks by Iran or north Korea and will also help naTO enforce security across europe. malaga

British fugitive arrested The national Police have detained 38-year-old Briton identified only as B.P. who was arrested after a bar fight in adeje, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in 2001 in which several people were wounded. The man was released but his re-arrest was ordered after one of the injured men died a few months later from wounds received in the brawl. B.P. fled the island and eluded capture even though he was on the most-wanted list posted in all Spanish police stations. However, his luck ran out when a police patrol spotted him in Benalmádena and he is currently in jail in Torremolinos awaiting a hearing.

Heading for disaster
Authoritarian parties
I
I
f one good thing came out of the disgusting show put on by Catalan independentistas at the Real MadridBarça match on Sunday it was that it finally made Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy react with more than anodyne words. He accused the separatists of turning the clock back several years and said the Catalan nationalist party CiU and the Basque Nationalist Party BNV were leading “voyages to nowhere”, adding that they have not realised that “frontiers are on the way out”. He ended his little spat against separatism by describing it as “stupidity of colossal dimensions”. In other words, the Catalans and Basques are really putting their foot in it.
H
e wasn’t the only member of the government to react. Justice minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon also threw in his twopenny-worth, and a lot of people are still trying to work out what he meant when he told a meeting of Catalan businessmen that “if Catalonia were to secede, it would be immediately excluded from the European Union, which in turn would slap trade tariffs on Catalan exports”. It would also mean Spain could not continue in the euro zone. “The hypothetical independence of Catalonia would not mean taking Catalonia out of Spain, but rather it would do away with Spain, because Spain makes no sense without Catalonia.” Most of us are under the impression that independence would sink Catalonia, while Spain would be free to tackle more important problems, to come out of it all much better off.
T
he saddest headline I’ve read in recent days is that Spain is the only country in the world where the official language is banned in some parts of it. According to the Constitution, Catalan is a co-official language together with Spanish. The latter always takes precedence and Catalan comes second. However, the Catalans have turned that clause on its head, putting Catalan ahead of Spanish. They’ve really lost their ideological marbles. Who on earth wants to study for a profession in a language that only seven million people understand?
The Basques have never tried to make their language compulsory or to make it take precedence over Spanish. However, they’re encouraging people to learn English and we just might end up with a region where Spanish is the third language.
I
n any case, the Spanish people are not impressed by all this talk of independence. The latest survey by the National Statistics Institute shows that just over a quarter want the regional governments to favour a return to centralism – a euphemism for “get rid of the regional governments”. An almost equal number feel the central government in Madrid should take back some of the powers it blithely farmed out some 20 years ago – especially health and education. Most of the rest wanted the country to stay as it is. The survey was carried out between September 3rd and the 11th, before all this fuss about separatism came to a head, so people would appear not to have been influenced by newspaper headlines.
I
t will be interesting to see if the regional powers-that-be get the message but as the guest journalists on TVE’s La Noche en 24h on Monday said – the politicians are completely out of touch with your average man and woman in the street. It was pointed out that the regional governments have hired some 70 people since the beginning of the year, when they said all public sector jobs were to be frozen. “Why shouldn’t people be disillusioned with the politicians – now considered to be the country’s third most serious problem after unemployment and the economy – when they hear them saying one thing and then doing the completely the opposite,” the journalists said.
I
suspect the politicians, and the Basque and Catalan nationalists are all heading for a disaster they will have brought upon themselves.
A vow not kept
U
nfortunately Hugo Chavez won Sunday’s election so I am unable to keep the vow I made to celebrate his defeat – namely that if Henrique Capriles won I would publish a photo of me with Chavez taken in 1999 and tell the story behind it. Chavez will now be in power until 2018 and I’m not getting any younger so it looks as if the photo will continue to quietly moulder in a drawer and I will remain silent.
t was not surprising to hear this week that Spaniards’ opinions of their two major parties has worsened since last November’s elections. Support for Mariano Rajoy’s ruling Partido Popular (PP) has dropped from 44.6 per cent 11 months ago to 29.9 per cent this month, according El País’ poll conducted by Metroscopia and released on Monday. The Socialists didn’t fare any better. Their popularity also dropped from 28.7 per cent to 23.9 per cent within that same timeframe. The country’s anaemic economy and the politicians’ inept measures to get Spain moving along again are the biggest reasons why both major political organisations have gotten poor grades. Rajoy’s unpopular spending cuts and the Socialists’ inability to come up with an alternative job stimulus plan are also weighing in.
I
nterestingly, the poll came out just over a week after the Berlin-based anti-corruption watchdog, Transparency International, released a far-reaching report on Spain’s Institutional Integrity Framework, which basically surmises that the twoparty structure’s traditional dominance and control over institutions has weakened good governance and the checks-and-balance system. The 14page document, unveiled on September 28th is part of a broader study that also looks at the integrity systems in 25 European states.
O
ne of the focuses of the Spanish survey hones in on the “imperfect party bipartisanship” fueled by the closed voting slates that prevent citizens from choosing their own leaders at the local and national levels. “Whoever controls the party also controls the representatives, which in turn encourages strong party discipline. Besides, when this person wins the election, he or she decides on the Council of Ministers and can even appoint thousands of senior positions in the public administration,” states the report.
A
n advocacy factor in the TI document calls on the depoliticization of the judiciary by eliminating the practice of political parties getting together to appoint their people to the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court, as well as the powerful legal watchdog, the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), which takes up all matters regarding Spain’s
legal system, including its financing. “A judicial career path should be established with clear meritocratic criteria and objectives in order to obtain positions in the supreme courts,” TI says. “The CGPJ should be depoliticized which is no simple task. The members should be appointed by lot and chosen from a list of qualified magistrates, professional lawyers and jurists. It could be considered to organize public hearings for the Congress and Senate as a form of selection interview.”
A
s part of the 43 recommendations given by Transparency, the coalition calls on the Spanish government to reform the party’s financing laws, and to set up an independent oversight committee to ensure that the political organisations are not receiving any type of illegal cash. It is also calling for a supervisory body to guarantee the quality of those persons appointed to top civil service positions and to eliminate the political cronyism at state agencies and ministries. “It is important to eliminate the free designation as an instrument of appointment and capture of the Public Administration. It is necessary to introduce into the different educational levels training on ethical behaviour and values against corruption,” TI states.
P
olitical pressures at the law enforcement levels, especially the Attorney General’s Office when investigating public corruption cases, should also be stamped out. TI also calls for a “whistle-blower” law that would guarantee protection, especially at the public sector level, to those who want to denounce corruption.
T
his sweeping report accurately points out the deficiencies in Spanish institutions; it should be used as a guide for lawmakers to adopt new rules and rewrite certain laws and regulations that can reinforce our trust in government. The Spanish system needs a complete overhaul to change the way politics and government are played out in this country. As the TI document’s opening statement reads: “Spain’s economic crisis may deepen without an overhaul of political parties’ internal workings and their ability to influence independent watchdogs.”

Found after nearly 70 years A group of amateur German historians, led by daytime insurance clerk Uwe Benkel, have found the remains of five of the seven RAF crew members of Lancaster Bomber ED427 which went down 70 years ago during the second world war. They were on their way back to RAF Fiskerton in Lincolnshire when they came under fire from German anti-aircraft flak following a raid on the Skoda armaments factory in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. Some locals have been angered by the team spending hours digging in a muddy field questioning why they would be searching for Brits who were bombing their people. But Mr. Benkel said they felt it was right to find the remains and bring comfort to their families who never knew what had happened to them. Pilot Alex Bone, flight engineer Norman Foster, navigator Cyril Yelland, wireless operator Raymond White and bomb aimer Raymond Rooney died in 1943 but their bodies were never found. The German military recovered two bodies from the wreckage – thought to have been air gunners Ronald Cope and Bruce Watt and buried them. After the war, the British Air Ministry tried to find the final resting place of the crew but with no success. Their names were added to the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey dedicated to 20,000 servicemen with no known grave. The historians found the remains of the crew and their aircraft with the aid of a local man who had seen
the plane on fire before it hit the field causing a large crater just outside Laumersheim, near Frankfurt all those years ago during a raid. They found what was described as ‘hundreds’ of human bones along with other wreckage. The team dug five metres deep in a 100 square metre area and found sections of the fuselage, cockpit, landing gear, a tyre, a burnt parachute, tools and ammunition. The ‘Lanc’ was just one of 36 bombers that didn’t make it home that night.
The final page Mr Benkel, 51, said: “We do research on missing men who are still in the ground. It doesn't make a difference if they are German or British; they were young men who fought and died for their country for which they deserve a proper burial in a cemetery. We do it for the families. For them, it is a bit like reading a book with the last page missing. When we find the bodies, we are writing the final page. Mr Benkel who now leads a voluntary recovery group began researching military plane crashes 25 years ago. His group has examined 400 crashes and recovered the bodies of 38 airmen. He recently began looking into ED427 and after talking to eye-witness Mr Menges, 83, the team started to dig for the missing Lancaster and its crew.
Mr Benkel said: "Peter lived in the next village. He saw the plane coming down on fire and saw the explosion. His parents didn't allow him to go and see the plane that night. He went the next morning and the German military were there. From what he saw the majority of the parts were on the surface and taken away. There was a big crater in the ground, within a couple of days it was filled in with rocks and dirt and was covered up for the next 69 years. Peter showed me the site and we used metal detectors and radar photos to examine it." Flight engineer Sergeant Foster's daughter Hazel Snedker was three years old when her father was killed aged 22. Mrs Snedker, now aged 72 and from Leamington Spa, Warks, said: "I have no memory of my father whatsoever. The only memory I have is of my mother fainting when she received the telegram saying he was missing. She died from tuberculosis when I was six years old and I was bought up by my paternal grandparents. I know that they quietly hoped that
there would be some news of their son. But in those days very little was spoken about it. When something like that happens you either get bitter and twisted about it or you just get on with it. And now, after all these years, it has all come to light. It is a great relief to know what did happen to him and where he is. At least he will now have a grave with a headstone. My father had two sisters who are still alive. I know my auntie Joan is very pleased. She wanted to know what happened to her brother."
At rest together The British Embassy in Berlin has been made aware of the discovery. It is thought the remains of the men will be buried in the same coffin in a single grave at a Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Germany. Mr Benkel said: "I think it is right they share the same grave. These men flew together and died together. They should now rest together."

Fashion Put the ‘wow’ factor back success in your floor
Welcome back Britsoc After coffee had been served the entertainer Jason Oliver drew dancers on to the floor with a few slow numbers before moving on to some more upbeat numbers to keep the dancers on the floor. Members and guests of the British Society flocked to Villa Luisa for the annual Welcome Back Gala Dinner Dance. The busy bar buzzed with conversation as people exchanged news of holidays taken and of visits to family and friends. Dinner was served in the function room and featured such delights as Oriental chicken, Pork with pears and cider, and Salmon with spicy salsa sauce as main course choices. Dessert choices included Grilled pineapple with Malibu cream or Apple and rhubarb pie.
The A.I.D. (Animals in Distress) Fashion Show at La Trocha, Coin was a wonderful event with winter fashion clothes and accessories all at very affordable prices and all worn by volunteers and their friends, who gave up their time to support the charity. Commentary was by DJ Lee Jay and A.I.D. would like to thank all helpers for their support.
The raffle provided a welcome break before dancers once more filled the dance floor and enjoyed dancing until the midnight hour. The next event at the British Society will be a Wine Tasting evening followed by a Saints and Sinners Dinner Dance.
The event raised much needed funds. In spite of a disappointingly low attendance of only 35 guests, A.I..D managed to raise a fantastic €715.
You can find out more about the British Society and the events planned for next month by consulting their website at www.britishsocietyspain. com or telephone 952 590 795.
The money raised will help to pay the charity’s ongoing vet bills which at the moment average €2500 every single month and keep increasing due to the amount of animals and people A.I.D. are helping.

DAVID THE DOGMAN Teach Your Dog To Eliminate On Command part 1 Teach him to poo when you want him to! If you plan to travel with your puppy, have rushed, hectic mornings or simply don't relish standing in the rain while the puppy takes his sweet time going potty, you should teach him to eliminate on a word 'Busy'.

best. As time goes by, many fine marble floors become worn, stained and damaged. Tony’s Marble Restoration uses modern equipment that can undo years of wear and damage. Most stains are removed, even the ones you thought were permanent. It is not generally realised that marble is quite fragile and porous. Left untreated, it can wear quite badly very quickly. Therefore, an equally important reason for having the marble renovated is to seal and protect it, and leave a surface on the marble that is not only a high gloss, non-slip, low maintenance surface, but is considerably harder than the marble itself.
Not only will it speed up the process of having him empty out, but it provides you with the convenience of being able to control when and where he will eliminate. That you can teach your dog to eliminate when and where you tell him might, at first, sound miraculous. But, a command, even one that tells him to do his business, is nothing more than a stimulus to get him to perform a certain behaviour. Although elimination is a natural, biological function, dogs also eliminate to a wide range of visual, auditory and olfactory stimuli. Very young puppies are
stimulated to urinate and defecate by their dam licking their ano-genital area. Older puppies respond to both pressure on the bowel or bladder as well as to the sight of their litter mates eliminating. Adult dogs use feces and urine to mark territory. It is not at all unusual for resident dogs to mark droppings left by strange dogs that have wandered through their territory. Many dogs, especially males, will mark their territorial boundaries at the sight or sound of a strange dog.

Columbus Day Columbus Day is one of those moveable feasts like Easter and this year it falls today, Wednesday 8th October 2012. It was originally a national holiday but the holiday will fall on Friday this week so don’t forget that there will be very

Nathan Detroit is desperate to find a location for his floating crap game. He can use the Biltmore Garage, but only if he can come up with a thousand dollars – and quickly. There’s lots coming up at Parka’s on the Calahonda Strip in the next few weeks. This Saturday, 8th, there is a Ska and Reggae night, so get out the tonic suits, and on the 15th is a Mod and Crossover night. Parker’s is at the bottom of The Strip’s hill and just a bit back from the road.
He has to find a bet that he can win against Sky Masterson, and succeeds in wagering that Sky cannot persuade Sergeant Sarah Brown to fly with him to Havana. Sky realises that he has been conned, but won't give up without trying. He uses his considerable charm to convince Sarah
that he is a reformed sinner, and that he will deliver a dozen sinners to her Mission if she will have dinner with him at his favourite restaurant. She reluctantly agrees – find out what happens next at the Salon Varietes.

Give yourself a break from routine this week and have some fun, you have been so disciplined in the area of health and habits and it has paid off, but now is the time to let loose a bit. All things are beneficial in moderation including moderation. This week is about finding the balance, getting down to earth, you heart, body and soul will thank you. Remain open and adaptable to new ideas and possibilities as they arise and above all remain patient. Perhaps you are wondering what the bigger picture is, there is a need within you, something you crave and yet are unable to put your finger on it exactly. By the weekend you are likely to be brought to a crossroads, the key is to wait until you know what you want, so you can automatically decide which path you should follow. Finish the things you have started, do one thing at a time and above all avoid getting too serious. A marvellous perspective dawns in your mind this week and motivates you in a myriad of ways. Inner faith fuels you forward and jump starts your heart's engine. You will be taking more time to enjoy your life in a peaceful and more pleasurable way spending more time with those you love and care about. Your home life is in a much better condition and this is also a good time to purchase a bargain or something for the home. You love to be prepared, however, when confronted with the unusual and unfamiliar it can send you into a bit of a whirl. Having said that, you do love an adventure and the excitement of it all, as long as you do not have too long to think about it. Invite spontaneity into your life as you are on the brink of a whole new chapter after a long arduous journey with a certain someone, things are about to take a settling turn.
You have been through some trying times this year, a honing, a focusing and a stabilising, Saturn is now leaving your sign and you can breathe a sigh of relief, the pressure is off. Let yourself day dream for a bit, go for walks or embrace a hobby that you had put down. Get as much sleep as you can and make sure September 23rd - before you take any drastic actions this week that you know what you are going October 22nd to do and how you are going to do it – think things through.
October 23rd November 21st
Your desires have sprung to the surface and are exposed ready for review and consideration. Things of late may very well have taken you to the end of your rope to remind you of the extreme place you have reached within yourself regarding a relationship. Choices will be easier to make and you are getting ready to settle into a committed plan that is more streamlined and on target. Your sense of clarity is unmatched right now so keep an eye open for opportunities coming your way.
SAGITTARIUS Lately it could have felt as though you have been going into battle with the end result being a parting of the ways. The struggle will soon be over and a new feeling of weightlessness and freedom will replace the fight. So many elements of your life start falling into place and along with it are some difficult November 22nd - decisions that have to be faced. Listen to your inner self and trust those gut December 21st instincts regardless of what others might say, think or expect.
CAPRICORN You are about to put your money where your mouth is as you act and speak from a more stable stance and become more certain of your position. Perhaps you are finding yourself trusting what is emerging naturally from the depths of your being. The results of your actions and efforts have started to take shape, although December 22nd - things are not going to happen as expected. Follow through on doing what you January 19th know you should, even if there are no immediate rewards visible just yet.

If you put personal effort into the area of material wealth then you will see this producing result. Your body may be feeling a bit run down and will need a lot of additional rest so make sure that you do not burn the candle at both ends and look after your health. You are aware that you need to meet obligations and responsibilities but you also need to create some time to do what you want to do, the more you use your creativity the better you feel.

SCORPIO
...you don’t have to be a chef!
If you are emotionally avoiding something then this week it will need to be dealt with, there is no more running, sweeping things under the carpet or burying your head in the sand, things have to be resolved now. One vulnerable step forward on your part will be rewarded in ways you cannot imagine, do what feels uncomfortable, trusting it will fill you up simply because you opened up. It is important not to follow the same old life patterns and repeat the same mistakes.
There will be no doubt about what is possible and what isn’t by the weekend as a certain dream will cease to be energised, this allows you to cut to the chase and see clearly with precision. This week it is all about sorting out the real from the fantasy, with strong lines being drawn deeply in the sand. Whatever happens can be handled or dealt with so there is no reason to get het up, all the past experiences you have dealt with work to your advantage.

• 1 lb 2 oz short-grained Spanish Rice, such as Bomba or Calasparra • 2 -3 tablespoons olive oil • 4 large red peppers • 1 small red pepper, chopped • 1/2 onion, chopped • 1/2 tomato, skinned and chopped • 5 oz minced / chopped pork or 3 oz salt cod • Saffron • Chopped fresh parsley • Salt Directions 1. Cut off the stem ends of the peppers, keeping them as lids to replace later, and scrape out the inner membranes with a teaspoon. 2. Heat the oil, sauté the chopped red pepper slowly until it is tender and remove. Fry the onion until tender, add the meat and brown it lightly, adding the tomato after a few minutes, then put back the cooked pepper, and stir in the raw rice, saffron and parsley. Salt to taste. 3. Fill the peppers carefully and lay them on their side in an ovenproof dish, being careful the filling doesn't fall out (you can wrap them in tinfoil to help hold them together).
POCO A POCO
4. Cover the dish and put it in a hot oven for about 1 1/2 hours. The rice cooks in the juices from the tomato and pepper. If the peppers are thin-skinned, you may need to add a little stock towards the end of the cooking time.
BOMBA RICE The basic difference between Bomba rice and others is that Bomba expands in width like an accordion rather than longitudinally, as do other rice strains. It differs from Italian Arborio rice, which is bred to be creamy, and Asian rice, which is meant to be sticky.
YO Means I ( not always )
SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell
LESSON
August 23rd September 22nd
You could encounter bouts of jealousy as others for some reason seem to be quite envious of you. Pay close attention to your personal possessions and make sure you are aware of where you have left the things that mean a lot to you. If you have been taking anything for granted then it would be time to pay attention to that as well, if something is important then make sure it stays that way. This is your moment to take control of your life and spring into action.
Kym’s Kitchen
We all know that "yo" means "I" but in certain circumstances Spanish uses "me" when English uses "I" I like is translated as Me gusta I love (for things) is Me encanta Me gusta chocolate I like chocolate Me encanta esta película I love this film You probably knew that already but here are a few more verbs that use "Me": Me falta is I don't have Me falta dinero - I don't have money While me hace falta is I need Me hace falta un coche nuevo I need a new car Me molesta (not as sinister as it sounds) means It bothers or annoys me Me molesta el ruido The noise is annoying me Me parece means It seems to me Me parece caro - It seems expensive to me Me parece demasiado grande - It seems too big to me Me parece estupendo - It seems fantastic to me Me importa means it is important to me and is more usually heard in the negative No me importa - It isn't important to me or It doesn't matter And when something really doesn't matter you may hear the expression Me importa un pepino I don't care at all (literally it means - it is as important to me as a cucumber!) Stem cell pioneers share Tomato-rich diet highly Nobel prize John Gurdon from the UK and Shinya Yamanaka from Japan have been awarded the Nobel prize for medicine or physiology for changing adult cells into stem cells, which can become any other type of cell in the body. Professor Gurdon used a gut sample to clone frogs and Professor Yamanaka altered genes to reprogramme cells. The Nobel committee said they had "revolutionised" science. In 1962, John Gurdon showed that the genetic information inside a cell taken from the intestines of a frog contained all the information needed to create a whole new frog. He took the genetic information and placed it inside a frog egg. The resulting clone developed into a normal tadpole. The technique eventually gave rise to Dolly the sheep, the first cloned mammal. Forty years later Shinya Yamanaka used a different approach. Rather than transferring the genetic

information into an egg, he reset it. He added four genes to skin cells which transformed them into stem cells, which in turn could become specialised cells. It is hoped the techniques will revolutionise medicine by using a sample of a person's skin to create stem cells. The idea is that

they could be used to repair the heart after a heart attack or reverse the progress of Alzheimer's disease. Professor Gurdon, now at the Gurdon Institute at Cambridge University, described his research as: "Trying to find ways of obtaining embryo cells
from the cells of an adult.” “The eventual aim is to provide replacement cells of all kinds starting from usually obtainable cells of an adult individual. For example, we would like to be able to find a way of obtaining spare heart or brain cells from skin or blood cells."
recommended A diet rich in tomatoes may reduce the risk of having a stroke, according to researchers in Finland who were investigating the impact of lycopene – a bright red chemical found in tomatoes, peppers and water-melons. The levels of lycopene in the blood were assessed in 1,021 male volunteers at the beginning of the study. The men were then followed for the next 12 years being divided into four groups according to the amount of lycopene in their blood. During the 12-yearperiod, 25 of the 258 men in the low lycopene group had strokes compared to 11 of the 259 men in the high lycopene group. The researchers concluded that their study adds to the evidence that lycopene acts as an antioxidant, reduces
Drug 'may prevent stroke damage' It may be possible to use a drug to prevent some of the lasting and crippling damage caused by a stroke, according to doctors in the US and Canada. A safety trial suggested the chemical NA-1 was safe to use. The small trial was set up at 14 hospitals in the US and Canada. The 185 patients who took part were having an operation to repair a brain aneurysm – a weakened blood vessel which could rupture – and were at increased risk of a stroke. Ninety-two people had the drug injected into a vein, while another 93 were injected with salty water.
inflammation and prevents blood clotting. This suggests that a diet high in fruits and vegetables is associated with a lower risk of stroke. They added: "The results support the recommendation that if people get more than five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, this would likely lead to a major reduction in the number of strokes worldwide, according to previous research."

However, brain scans also showed that fewer brain lesions – damaged areas of tissue – formed in patients given the drug. The doctors noted that age is the greatest risk factor for stroke and because of the global population ageing, the number and burden of strokes will increase. They added that previous trials to use drugs to protect the brain had resulted in failure and this drug still needs to be assessed in
much larger clinical trials before its effectiveness was known. A spokesman for the Stroke Association charity said: "We welcome any treatment that could protect brain cells after a stroke and limit the amount of brain damage. This potential treatment appears promising, but a

Further to the letter in last week’s copy of The News, I also, like Mr.Petrie, could not believe that after living 18 years in a country this person was proud and dumb enough to state not to have learnt Spanish.
whilst I was absent during one meeting ( he tried before but I always opposed) with the help of the English to get voted in after living in Spain for an eternity and being the president for already several years.
Alas there are many English people like that. One of them is the president of where I live. He took advantage

Alan Porter The main reason for this problem (of not learning the language of an adopted country) is one of necessity. For people living in London, and perhaps working as well, English becomes fundamental and hard to get along without: in fact it is the lingua franca of the multicultural society of

relying on someone to translate and write. I refuse to pay for any of this. A president should be able to speak, read and write in the country he lives in. I sincerely hope that if this letter gets published the president reads it. How many of the non-English and I included are disgusted with the whole matter.

ready-made community with a huge infrastructure to support it, aside from the historical lack of appetite for foreign languages. Look for working British in any of the major towns in Spain and a large majority will be using Spanish as a requirement.

Editor says: Thanks to everyone who has written in and phoned in telling us of our mistake. Hopefully it will be a one-off and it’s been great to
find that our readers have a sense of humour about it having, in some cases, spent hours trying to work it out last week. But we are delighted to discover that so many of you obviously enjoy this page. We apologise for the error and will try not to do it again!
Took me a lot longer than usual but it got my brain working harder so thank you.

e International Space Station Just like a bus, you wait for ages and then two come along together! And tomorrow and Friday evening there will be two very good views of the International Space Station as it flies across southern Spain.
I
t seems a very long time since I wrote about the ISS so I’ll just bring it up to date. The ISS is a giant orbiting laboratory travelling at 17,000mph – or 7km per second – at a height of around 250 miles and orbiting the Earth every 90 minutes. Construction of the ISS began in 1998 when the Space Shuttle Atlantis placed the first module in orbit. Since then more and more modules have been delivered either by the Space Shuttles or as unmanned flights. Each module has to be carefully attached to the growing ISS usually by astronauts performing delicate space walks outside.
C
onstruction was temporarily halted in 2003 after the Space Shuttle Colombia was destroyed whilst returning to Earth. Construction resumed in 2005 and was finally completed in 2011 although there are one or two external components still to be fitted. In all the ISS weighs in at over 400 tons. It is 357 feet long and 239 feet wide making it bigger than a football field.
I
It was however, worn out for The cost of dying is about to get a lot more expensive – Or is it?? From 1st September the rate of IVA (vat) charged by Funeral Directors will rise from 8% to 21% so an average funeral cost here in Spain will be in the region of €4840 €. With an Iberian Funeral Plan you fix the cost of the funeral at today’s price and it is fixed forever, irrespective of how much funeral expenses rise in the future. With guaranteed Plan prices starting from just €2995. Do you need to look elsewhere for total peace of mind? Just look at the facts: Iberian have the best plans and plan benefits at the best prices Iberian plans are the only genuine interest free plans if you wish to pay by instalments Iberian do not charge you an additional administration fee Iberian do not have any deferred or final settlement payments at the end of the instalment term Iberian Funeral Plans are fully transferrable to the UK Iberian Funeral Plans cover you throughout the EU and can assist worldwide. With prices starting at just €2995 €and IVA FREE, less does equal more. Therefore it makes so much sense to protect your loved ones by investing in a guaranteed funeral plan from Iberian. t is so big that it can easily be seen from Earth. But because it has no outside lights of its own then it can only be seen for a brief period about an hour and a half after sunset or before sunrise when the sky is dark but the sunlight still catches it and lights it up. You don’t need any special equipment to see it as it shines brighter than anything else in the sky except the Moon. It first appears in the west as a bright star moving quickly across the sky. As it gets higher in the sky and closer to you it becomes noticeably brighter until it passes heading toward the east.
I
t has no engines to keep it flying. It remains in orbit simply by the fact that the first module was initially set in motion and as there is no air resistance to slow it down then it will remain orbiting at a constant speed until it is eventually brought crashing back to Earth. It does have small manoeuvre jets that are used to steer it away from potential collisions with any of the thousands of other satellites and space junk that it may encounter.
T
he first crew took up residence in November 2000 and it has been continually occupied ever since by up to six astronauts at a time. Currently there are
only three tenants on board, an American, a Russian and a Japanese astronaut. Since the demise of the Space Shuttles last year the crew are now transported up to the ISS on board a Russian Soyuz rocket. A tour of duty can last up to six months but next year three volunteers are to stay for a whole year on board to test the effects of long term weightlessness as would occur on a trip to Mars.
E
arly on Monday morning the first commercial rocket, Space X CRS-1, was launched. The Falcon 9 rocket and the cargo-carrying Dragon capsule will rendezvous with the International Space Station today. The unmanned CRS-1 is a privately owned venture hoping to become the next generation of supply ships to replace the Shuttle fleet. Not only will the CRS-1 deliver supplies, it will also be able to return the results of the many scientific experiments back to Earth for analysis. If the CRS-1 is successful then future fights could even carry crew members back and forth to the ISS.
S
o, if you want to see the ISS, stand outside tomorrow evening (Thursday 11th October) at 20.54 and look toward the southwest. It will pass almost directly overhead at 21.00 and will have disappeared into the northeast by 21.02.
I
f you miss it then try again the next night, Friday, a little earlier this time at 20.05 once again coming from the southwest direction. It will be at its maximum altitude at 20.11 and gone toward the northeast by 20.15.
D
on’t forget to give the astronauts a big wave as the pilot told me he’s going to lean out of the window and wave back. Enjoy your Stargazing!

Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson received a £3.2million payout from the production company he started before selling his stake to BBC Worldwide, it has emerged. The BBC's highest paid star then landed up to £15million from the sale of his 30 per cent stake in Bedder 6. Clarkson received £2.7million from the firm last year. Its name - Bedder 6 - is said to be a pun on 'better sex'.Top Gear has been one of Worldwide’s biggest moneyspinners and Bedder 6 has had huge success from merchandise, book and DVD sales.
Vettel victorious in Japan If Ferrari were hoping that careful management of Fernando Alonso's big points lead would secure their driver the 2012 F1 world championship, then those plans were blown apart by a first lap disaster in the Japanese Grand Prix. The first corner proved a dramatic one with far reaching consequences for the title battle as Alonso was sent spinning off the track and into early retirement, effectively wiping out his lead over Sebastian Vettel in the title battle. Inevitably, there were knock-on collisions: Romain Grosjean was slow to realise what was happening and ended up running into the back of Mark Webber's car, turning the Red Bull perpendicular to where it needed to go; Nico Rosberg also got a hefty punt at the rear from Bruno Senna. Although the day was done for both Alonso and Rosberg, the other three – Webber, Grosjean and Senna – were able to get back underway and limped back to the pits for repairs as the safety car controlled things for the rest of the field. Grosjean and Senna both got further penalties for causing collisions – Grosjean's recent past making it a full ten-second stop-go penalty in his case, the heaviest in-race sanction available to the
OOPS! international Belgian footballer Jonathan Legear has said he was "only slightly" over the drink-drive limit after crashing his car into a petrol station. The incident occurred in the Flanders town of Tongeren, where Legear – capped twice by his country in 2010 – was spending the weekend having not been selected by his Russian club Terek Grozny. Legear is reported to have accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal instead of the brake, sending his car through a glass door into the shop, sending an estimated 1,000 cans of drink flying.

race officials. The steward’s didn't frown on Raikkonen, however, and seemed to view that inciting incident as a plain racing accident although Alonso understandably bitterly criticised the Finn for not lifting when as far as the Spaniard was concerned it was always clear there was no room for the Lotus. Red Bull driver Mark Webber has pulled no punches in his criticism of Romain Grosjean, after the Lotus driver ruined his race. "I haven't seen what happened at the start but the guys confirmed it was the first-lap nutcase again – Grosjean," said Webber when interviewed after the race by Sky Sports F1's Natalie Pinkham. "It makes it frustrating because a few big guys obviously suffered from that today. Maybe he needs another holiday." By holiday, Webber is suggesting that Grosjean

Kamui Kobayashi hopes securing his first podium finish on home soil will be enough to keep him in Formula One with Sauber in 2013. The 26-year-old delighted the huge home crowd by finishing third at the Japanese Grand Prix, fending off a late challenge from the McLaren of Jenson Button to become just the third Japanese driver to finish on an F1 podium. Takuma Sato had been the last to finish in the top three at Indianapolis in 2004, while Aguri Suzuki finished third in Japan in 1990. Car sales dropped further in austerity-hit France, Italy and Spain last month, and France's CCFA auto industry association cut its full-year market forecast, highlighting the pain for carmakers that have warned there would be no imminent recovery. French September car registrations dropped 18 % year-on-year, while Spain's plunged 37%, the countries' main industry associations said on Monday. In Italy, car sales fell 25.7% in September, the transport ministry said. The Spanish plunge was accentuated by a September 1st sales-tax increase, which had brought forward some sales to August. Would-be buyers also held out for renewed scrappage incentives

the Spanish company a 2.15% UK market share (Source: SMMT). Both are monthly records. The magnificent result comes hot on the heels of SEAT unveiling two brand new models at the 2012 Paris Motor Show: the all-new Leon five-door, due to hit the road March 1st 2013, and the new Toledo hatchback, in showrooms from December 1st. The 7,739 cars registered in September comfortably eclipses SEAT’s previous monthly record, set in March
2011 with 7,251 sold, for a 1.98% market share. SEAT’s previous best September registrations figure was set in 2007, with 6,851 cars sold for a 1.63% market share, while its best September in terms of market share was last year, with 2.0% gained thanks to 6,612 cars sold.

introduced on Monday. The September decline was nonetheless a "disappointing result," the ANFAC association said. Renault had cut its own market forecasts on September 26th to predict declines of 13% in France and 7-8% in Europe. The French brand suffered some of last month's biggest declines, with sales dropping 36% at home and 51% in Spain. Ford sales also lost ground, tumbling 32% in France and 40% in Spain. For the first nine months, the French car market recorded a 14% decline, Italy 20.5%, and Spain shrank 11%, while
PSA/Peugeot-Citroen's small cars suffered in the lull ahead of renewed Spanish incentives, the twin brands fared better at home. Buoyed by accelerating sales of its new 208 subcompact, Peugeot's French registrations fell just 1 % in September, resisting the market slump. Citroen dropped 10%. Volkswagen fell in line with the French market and lost ground for its core VW brand in Spain, where sales fell 44%. Fiat dropped 34% in France but just 13% in Spain, limiting the damage with an 82% gain in registrations of its Panda minicar.

Support our boys The 19 Close Service Support Battalion (19 CSS Bn) has spent the last two years nonstop in Afghanistan supporting military operations, but has fallen foul of the governmental defence cuts and the battalion is due to be disbanded in December this year. The battalion has always been committed to playing rugby and has been really successful despite being stationed for most of the time in Afghanistan, and as a last hurrah, they are on tour in Spain playing their final few matches before being disbanded. Axarquia Rugby Club have jumped at the chance to be a part of the farewell tour and have arranged a rugby competition next Saturday, 13th October with kick off at 17.00 at the Fernando Hierro Stadium in Velez-Malaga. A third team has been invited, CD Loja Rugby Club, and there will be
a triangular tournament between the three teams. In between matches, the U17 Colt teams will put on an exhibition match to entertain the crowd. Axarquia Rugby would like to invite everyone to come and support the boys of the British Army and the Royal British Legion is actively inviting members to attend to send the boys off in style. Entrance is free to the games, and there will be a bar serving refreshments, beverages and a chance to buy club merchandise. For those people who do not understand, or who do not watch rugby, members of Axarquia Rugby Club will be on hand to explain rules, and the scoring system. It is a great way to meet new people and a new community. After the matches, El Cruce Restaurant at Trapiche has kindly offered it s premises for free, and there

Wayne’s Poker What would you do here? We are in a tournament with 6 players at the table and on the button. We only have 10 Big Blinds and look down at a 7, one player has linked into the pot by flat calling the Big Blind, the rest folded. The answer is simple: we have to shove all of our chips into the pot! The player that limped in could hold a monster, looking for a raise, but he most likely has a mid-pair or weak hand looking for a cheap flop. We are short stacked and need chips so any A looks good. Stealing the Blind helps but if we get called with a KQ we are ahead and looking at that double up. What you must not do is flat call hoping to get lucky and hit the flop, you can’t afford the chips to fold. A simple rule when short stacked is play any half a hand like AA as aggression in
this situation can pay. Let’s just recap on some of the terminology of Hold ‘em and Omaha Poker: The Flop – the first three cards are dealt in the centre by the dealer. The Turn – the fourth card dealt by the dealer The River – the last card dealt by the dealer in the centre which is known as “The Board”. A three-bet is a raise of a raise and should the three-bet be raised, this would be a fourbet! Flat Call – is when you limp into the pot by just matching the forced bet of the Big Blind or any other bet. A Set is when you have threeof-a-kind with two of them in your personal cards. And Trips is when you have three-of-a-kind but two of them being dealt by the
dealer in the Flop, Turn and River. A London Casino this week is refusing to pay Phil Ivy who is considered the best Hold ‘em player in the world, the 11 million dollars he won. The dealer was cleared of any collusion with the US star and no reasons for not paying have been given. Ivy did have his 1 million stake refunded but I can’t see him walking away from 10 million dollars so, watch this spacve for updates. Next week we will look at playing pocket pairs and bet sizing. After the superb 3-0 victory in Brussels against Anderlect in the Champion’s League, Malaga travelled to Madrid in the hope of another three points to keep them within touching distance of Barcelona. The night started badly as Atletico scored early on, Falcao ghosting in behind Monreal on six minutes to head home. Malaga responded with Camacho who tested Courtois on 33 minutes with a shot, and it was eight minutes later when Malaga drew level.
Benavista Bowling Club celebrate 25 years On Sunday 7th October Benavista Bowling Club hosted an interclub tournament to celebrate 25 years of existence. Invites went out to all the Bowling Clubs along the coast and ensured a great turnout on the day. A fun day of competition and catching up with old friends ensued. The winning club were visitors Benalmadena. An enjoyable day was had by all.
Monreal broke down the left and his cross was met by a Santa Cruz bullet header at the near post. Falcao though was a constant thorn in Malaga's side, and with Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini in the stand Falcao was constantly looking to impress, But with Weligton and Demichelis doing well Malaga were just about coping. Eventually the midweek exploits took their toll, as Malaga started tiring Atletico pressed and at the

The 27-year-old wrote: "Just noticed @jensonbutton unfollowed, thats a shame...I thought we respected one another but clearly he doesn't." When Hamilton realised Button had never followed him he revoked his statement. He added: "My bad [mistake] just found out Jenson never followed me. Don't blame him!"
Leeds Rhinos retain Super League title Leeds Rhinos forward Jamie Jones-Buchanan has hailed his side's Grand Final victory over Warrington Wolves at Old Trafford as "astonishing".
The 31-year-old added: "Even though we haven't been that consistent all the time we've been to every final for the last two years and that shows the attitude these players have."
The Rhinos earned a 2618 win over the Wire on Saturday to retain the Super League title. "The energy the lads have shown in big games over the last two seasons has been something special," JonesBuchanan told BBC Yorkshire Sport.

En route to Old Trafford, Leeds ended Wakefield's eight-match winning run, became only the second side in 2012 to win in Perpignan against Catalan and beat Wigan, who topped the league, in the semi-final.
New Centre Opens Football Association chairman David Bernstein has described the opening of its new centre of excellence as an "historic" day for the English game. The £105m St George's Park complex in Staffordshire will house all 24 England teams, from junior to senior levels. "We have to get more players through who can be full England internationals and this is where it will happen," Bernstein told BBC Radio 5 live. "So much work has gone into this for so long and to see it now is fantastic." The 330-acre St George's Park was officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on Tuesday. England's players are using the facility for the first time
this week as they prepare for their World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland.
Among the facilities at St George's Park are: - A senior training pitch, laid out to the exact dimensions of the playing surface at Wembley Stadium and with exactly the same mix of grass and artificial fibres. - 11 outdoor pitches, five of which are floodlit and have under-soil heating. - A full-size indoor 3G artificial pitch with a viewing gallery for up to 200 people. - A new Hilton hotel featuring suites named after former England players and managers.
Amazing Grace wins fifth title of the year South Africa's Branden Grace won the Dunhill Links Championship by two shots from Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen with a record-equalling 22-underpar total. Grace, 24, led from the first round to capture his fifth title of the year. "I've really dreamt of this moment my whole life. It was a tough day, but the putter started working," said Grace. Olesen closed in on Grace's overnight four-shot advantage and levelled on the 11th but could not prevent the Pretoria golfer securing back-to-back wins. Grace birdied holes 12, 13 and 14 to pull clear once again and when Olesen bogeyed the 15th the South African's lead was back up to four. A birdie on the 16th from the Dane kept the tournament alive, but Olesen missed an eagle attempt on the final hole and Grace duly claimed the £491,000 prize. Grace has risen from outside the world's top 300 to inside the top 40 and has a chance of overtaking world number one Rory McIlroy for the European money list title next month.
"It's definitely in my sights," said Grace, up from 12th to third on the European list having won the Jo’burg Open, Volvo Champions, China Open and last Sunday's Origins of Golf title. Scotland's Stephen Gallacher finished in a seven-way tie for fifth after shooting a quadruple-bogy eight at the 16th. Paul Lawrie flew into Gleneagles by helicopter on Wednesday to hand over the Ryder Cup to the Perthshire course, which will host the 2014 tournament. Lawrie, 43, played in the tournament which has a pro-am format. The 1999 Open champion was competing alongside his 17-year-old son Craig, a scratch handicapper who caddied for his father at the Scottish Open in July.
Fellow Ryder Cup winners Peter Hanson and Martin Kaymer also turned out as well as all four European vice-captains – Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley, Thomas Bjorn and Miguel Angel Jimenez – and American Ryder Cup team member Dustin Johnson. Most of the star players started at Carnoustie on Thursday, then switched to Kingsbarns on Friday before playing St Andrews on Saturday. Among the amateur golfers who took part were Hollywood star Bill Murray and the most successful Olympian of all time, swimmer Michael Phelps. The American holed a monster putt from over 50 yards at Kingsbarns on Friday, proving his sporting prowess extends onto dry land as well.

Ashley Cole escapes FA ban Ashley Cole will not be banned from England duty after apologising to FA chairman David Bernstein. The left-back, 31, was charged with misconduct on Monday for using an expletive to describe the governing body after the John Terry racism case. "He apologised publicly the day after. He saw me last night and he apologised personally," Bernstein said. "He showed real remorse. I looked him in the eye and I accept that. He is free to play for England." The decision of whether to include Cole in the starting XI in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland will be left to England manager Roy Hodgson.

Suarez dives for fun Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has defended Luis Suarez following fresh accusations that he dives to win penalties. Stoke boss Tony Pulis wants the striker banned for trying to con referees while pundit Alan Hansen is also critical. Pulis called on the Football Association to punish Suarez for what he claims was a dive during Sunday's goalless draw at Anfield. Suarez didn’t do himself any favours with his antics in that game and the dive was worthy of an Oscar.
