ICKHAM’S

WORLD Disgraceful!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

One of the lovely people I get to meet on my rounds delivering the paper has had a rather nasty time of it. We shall call him James. James likes a drink or two and after having said goodbye to his pals set off for home across the other side of the N340. He never made it. What happened was that one of the bridges going across the road has a very low railing and James who is very tall toppled over the top, falling some 30 feet to the ground below. No-one found him until the following morning when a friend called an ambulance and the paramedics hoisted him up the bank on a back board. OK so far. However, they then took him off the back board and sent him on his way home. Luckily, the friend who found him is an exnurse and insisted, having seen that his ankle was by this time black and very painful, on taking him to hospital where they discovered, forget the ankle for now, he had fractured his spine in two places! He was kept in hospital, immobilised for a few days then sent home in an ambulance with only one attendant who couldn’t get him out. Friend steps in again and has been nursing him ever since. What I’d like to know is this: What on earth are the health service thinking of? Surely he could sue them for lack of adequate care? Also, thank God for great friends. Get well soon James!

Lorca earthquake 'caused by groundwater extraction' They reported that those shifts correlate with locations where water has been drained for years. Their study highlights how human activity such as drainage or borehole drilling can have farreaching seismic effects. Pablo Gonzalez of the University of Western Ontario and colleagues used satellite radar data to trace the ground movements of the Lorca event back to their source, finding that the earthquake resulted from slippage on a comparatively shallow fault that borders a large water basin south of the city. That

the slippage happened at a depth of just 3km explains why the fairly mild Magnitude 5.1 quake caused so much damage in the area. The team went on to study potential reasons for the slippage, finding that the water table in the adjacent Alto Guadalentin basin had dropped by some 250m over the last 50 years as water was drained for irrigation in the region. Their calculations show that this created stresses on the fault that initially triggered the earthquake and defined its eventual magnitude.

However, the area lies on a seismically active region, and the data suggest only that the water drainage sped up and triggered a process that would have eventually happened anyway. Dr Gonzalez stressed the study was specific to the Lorca earthquake, and told reporters that "We cannot set up a rule just by studying a single particular case. But the evidence that we have collected in this study could be necessary to expand research in other future events that occur near dams, aquifers and melting glaciers, where you

Merkel dashes Rajoy’s hopes After last weekend’s EU summit agreed to move toward a banking union for the euro zone under the direct supervision of the European Central Bank next year and to eventually allow the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) to directly inject capital into ailing banks, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told a news conference in Brussels: “There will not be any retroactive direct recapitalisation. If recapitalisation is possible, it will only be possible in the future, so I think that

The Lorca quake was felt in Almeria, Albacete, Granada, Jaen, Malaga, Alicante, Ciudad Real and in some areas of Madrid.

France had lobbied for quicker implementation of a banking union, and Merkel denied veiled accusations that delaying the move had anything to do with the German elections next year.

The country’s two main unions, CCOO and UGT, have formally approved a general strike for November 14th to protest against the government’s austerity drive. UGT spokesman Toni Ferrer said: “There are more than enough reasons for the stoppage.” He said government policies would deepen the recession, and criticised the avalanche of legislation passed by the government since Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy took power last year.

If the strike goes ahead, it will be the first time that Spain has seen two such stoppages in the space of the year.

“They have beaten all records,” he said. “Since Rajoy has been in power 22 decrees have been passed.”

General strikes may also be called for the same day in Cyprus, Malta and Greece.

Regional election results: Nationalists 1 Partido Popular 1 The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) won 27 seats in Sunday’s regional election in the Basque Country, followed by the EH Bildu coalition of left-wing separatists with 21 seats – far short of the 36 seats needed to form a majority government. The Socialist Party – which had governed since the last regional election in coalition with the Partido Popular – trailed in third place with 16 seats, a loss of nine seats, followed by the PP with 10, which lost three. The PNV had governed since 1980 until it lost to the Socialist-PP coalition last time around. Bildu was formed last year to unite all the left-wing separatist parties. It represents the

The Socialists won 18 seats, seven less than in the last election, while two nationalist parties took 16 seats between them. The result was seen as a victory for Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, as Feijoo is the only regional leader who has been making cuts since he was elected four years ago, ensuring that the Galicia regional government is in the black “and can make it to the end of the month”, as the reelected premier put it. Also, the unemployment rate in the region is 21 per cent, while the national rate stands at 25 per cent.

Cement consumption at 50 year low

A 39-year-old man who shot dead a 13-year-old girl he had been having a relationship with together with an innocent bystander in El Salobral, Albacete province, on Saturday night, committed suicide after a six-hour standoff with the Guardia Civil on Monday. Another man, the girl’s grandfather, was also wounded in the shooting spree. Juan Carlos Alfaro, telephoned the Guardia Civil to confess to the killings before holing up inside a shed located on a plot of land belonging to his family on the outskirts

with the country in its second recession in three years, and spending on public works slashed, cement consumption in the first nine months of the year fell to its lowest level in 50 years. with an estimated one million housing units built during the boom years still unsold, the home-building sector has virtually collapsed. According to figures released earlier this week by the industry’s association – oficemen – in the period January-September only 11.6 million metric tonnes of cement were sold, down 34 percent from the same period a year earlier. The association estimates that consumption for the full year will amount to 13 million metric tons, the lowest figure since 1967. The number of people employed in the sector fell from 7,252 at the end of 2007 to 5,167 as of August of this year. Plants in Jaén, Granada, Vilanova and Catalonia have closed down, while production has been halted at others.

of the town. The unemployed mechanic, described as an excellent marksman, was armed with a pistol and shotgun. After a massive manhunt with sniffer dogs on Sunday, Alfaro was found at around 9am on Monday hiding in the shed. He opened fire on the Guardia but no one was injured. Some 100 agents surrounded the area, and negotiators from the Guardia’s Special Intervention Unit (UEI) tried to convince him to surrender. He told them he

would shoot to kill if they tried to storm the shed. At mid-morning he asked the negotiators for a packet of cigarettes and a mobile phone to replace

his, which had run out of battery power. He shot himself in the head around 3 pm and was rushed to hospital but died after three hours on the operating table.

Home loans drop to record levels The number of home loans granted dropped to the lowest levels on record in August as tight credit conditions and high unemployment continued to depress the mortgage market, despite a fall in prices.

According to figures released on Monday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of loans disbursed fell to 21,106, down 28.5 percent from August 2011. It was the lowest figure since the INE began

compiling the series in 2003.

Guardia Civil nab jam-dodging driver The inventiveness of some drivers to avoid traffic jams in madrid knows no bounds. A Guardia Civil patrol was surprised last week to see a car in which a mannequin dressed as a woman was riding in the passenger seat, so the driver could use a fast-track highway lane reserved for vehicles with multiple occupants. They pulled over a car on the A-6 highway after noticing the passenger’s strange "immobility". They said the dummy was "perfectly done out with a wig, sunglasses and completely dressed" and she was even wearing her seatbelt. They fined the driver €200 and confiscated the dummy.

World News Protesters oppose Kosovo-Serbia Police in Kosovo on Monday fired tear gas in a clash with protesters angered by recent talks aimed at improving ties between Serbia and its former province. Demonstrators chanted "Shame!" and "No bargain with Serbia!" as they tried to push through a police cordon around the office of Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci. At least 20 people, including police, were injured and dozens of protesters arrested in the capital Pristina. The rally was organised by Kosovo's SelfDetermination party, which opposes any talks

Kosovo's statehood has been recognised by some 90 countries, including the US and most of the EU members. Pirate attacks drop sharply the number of ships attacked by Somali pirates has fallen sharply this year according to the International Maritime Bureau – largely due to international intervention and new security measures. Just 70 attacks were reported by ships in the first nine months of this year, compared with 233 incidents in 2011. But the organisation warned seafarers to remain vigilant in the waters around Somalia. though just one attack has been reported off Somalia in the past three months, pirates there are still holding 11 vessels for ransom with 167 crew members as hostages on board. twenty-one more kidnapped crew members are being held on land. Police have blocked North Korean defectors now living in the South from sending hundreds of thousands of propaganda leaflets over the border, after North Korea threatened last week to open fire on South Korean territory if the launch went ahead. activists have sent leaflets many times in the past but specific threats such as the one last week are rare. the South Korean military went into a heightened state of alert and hundreds of residents near the border were advised to evacuate. however, police sealed off the intended launch site early on Monday and said it would remain sealed off until the activists ''give up their plan''. Castro attacks 'lies' about his ill health Fidel Castro has written a strongly-worded article condemning persistent rumours that he is on his death bed. the 86-year-old attacked international media "lies", and published photos of himself in the official newspaper Granma. the last images of Castro to be made public had been from March, when the Cuban ex-leader briefly met Pope Benedict during the pontiff's visit to the island. Castro's long absence from the public stage had fuelled rumours on social media sites that his health had deteriorated, or that he may even have died. In the article, Castro said: “although a lot of people in the world are taken in by the organs of information – almost all of which are in the hands of the privileged and the rich – that publish these stupidities, people are increasingly believing less and less in them."

Scientists guilty of manslaughter Six Italian scientists and an ex-government official were sentenced to six years in prison on Monday over the 2009 deadly earthquake in L'Aquila after a regional court found them guilty of multiple manslaughter. The seven – all members of the National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks – were accused of having provided "inaccurate, incomplete and

contradictory" information about the danger of the tremors felt ahead of April 6th 2009 quake. Their lawyers argued that there was no way to predict major quakes. The 6.3 magnitude quake devastated the city and killed 309 people. Many smaller tremors had rattled the area in the months before the major quake that destroyed much of the historic centre. Describing the sentences

as "hasty" and "incomprehensible", their lawyers have said that they will appeal against the sentence. Some scientists have warned that the case might set a damaging precedent, deterring experts from sharing their knowledge for fear of being targeted in lawsuits. More than 5,000 scientists have signed an open letter to Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in support of the group.

Russian opposition elected online Voters opposed to Russia's President Vladimir Putin have chosen a new opposition leadership to fight for election reform.

Novelist and columnist Dmitry Bykov came second in the vote, ahead of opposition leader and former chess champion Garry Kasparov.

Popular anti-corruption campaigner Alexei Navalny won the most votes in the three-day online poll.

One of the organisers said the poll would clarify "which people, which methods and which

ideology have the most support". Some 81,800 people – only a tiny fraction of Russia’s voters – took part in the internet poll, but the opposition hopes it will reinvigorate a movement that staged large-scale protests last winter, posing a serious challenge to Putin.

incidents and said that they had been “overwhelmed” be the support they have received from the closeknit community.

He has been charged with the murder of 31-yearold mother of three Karina Menzies who died after being hit by a white van outside the Ely Fire Station, plus 13 counts of attempted murder and four counts of assault, as well as dangerous driving. He appeared at Cardiff Magistrates Court on Monday morning. The charges were announced just hours after hundreds of people grieved for Karina at a church service in the city on Sunday, with 200 people holding two minutes silence for Ms. Menzies.

Detective Superintendent Paul Hurley said: "While a man has been charged, the investigation is still very much ongoing and we still appeal for anyone with information to contact the incident room at Cardiff Central Police Station."

A South Wales Police spokesperson has said that people had come forward with eye-witness accounts, CCTV footage and mobile phone images of the

Reverend Jan Gould led a special service at the Church of the Resurrection in Ely, breaking down before the packed congregation. She said from the pulpit: "Whether we've personally known one or more of the victims of Friday's terrible events, or whether we are here as a member of this community simply wanting to show solidarity, there can be no one who has not been profoundly affected by

what has happened here this week. This must surely be perhaps the deepest grief we have shared as a community. This grief, of Karina's tragic death ... has broken the heart of our community, and the healing work that is now to be done will take a very, very long time. We will never be the same again as a community – for how can we not be changed after such a tragedy." In her service, Ms. Gould pleaded with her 600strong congregation to respond to the events with love. "The only way that we can move forward into the future with hope is by responding to this suffering the same way Jesus did with love. Not malice, not hatred, not revenge. Not taking the law into our own hands – that's what our justice system is for," she said.

Fire deaths rise to five Charlie Timbrell, aged just 1one year old, was being treated for his injuries at the Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool following a blaze at his first-floor home at around 10pm on Friday night in Prestatyn, North Wales that took the lives of his mother, Lee-Anne Shiers, 20, her niece Skye Allen, two and nephew Bailey Allen, four. However, on Sunday, Charlie became the fourth fatality from the fire and

died surrounded by the remainder of his family. Miss Shiers' partner Liam Timbrell, aged 23, is also being treated in hospital after firefighters managed to rescue Mr Timbrell and his son from the property. Family members earlier brought flowers and teddy bears to the scene and gathered there for around 45 minutes looking at floral tributes and reading messages of condolence. They said they were too

upset to comment on the tragedy. At the local Christ Church, special prayers were said as part of the Sunday service. Police forensic officers have been at the flat in Maes y Groes carrying out investigations and a 45year-old man and a 42-year-old woman, who are tenants in the downstairs flat, continue to be questioned on suspicion of murder.

Chilly times Temperatures are set to plunge by as much as 10 degrees in less than a week, meteorologists said. warm weather arrived in the UK on Monday with temperatures climbing to a maximum of 20C (68F) in london, but only lasted a day as northern winds brought a chill to the United Kingdom by dropping the temperatures by around 10º ending the so far mild autumn temperatures. Temperatures as low as 8/9ºC (46.4ºF) will be the norm on Friday with scotland getting some snowfall. Alexi Boothman, a forecaster with Meteogroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "Clearly, it is a gradual decrease in temperatures from the beginning of the week and it is quite a marked fall in the space of a week with the air mass being turned around." Jailed There is nothing more British than the Oxford and Cambridge boat race on the River Thames, but this year’s race had a slightly different result – the jailing of a protestor for swimming into the path of the crews. Millions of television viewers watched as Trenton Oldfield halted the annual race on April 7th. He was found guilty at Isleworth Crown Court of causing a public nuisance and was sentenced on Friday to six months’ jail and ordered to pay £750 costs.

Dog stays by owner’s side Around fifteen firefighters took 90 minutes to rescue an 82-year-old pensioner from a muddy bog on the Isle Of Wight last Wednesday after she had fallen head first down a bank alongside the A3055. She had been reported missing after she failed to turn up for a hairdressing appointment and it is believed that she fell while walking her black and white sheepdog the night before in Pelham Woods after leaving her house in

Ventnor. She had to go through a night of heavy rain and gale force winds before she was found but her trusty dog never left her side. A full-scale search and rescue operation was launched by Hampshire Constabulary to locate the woman. Officers on the ground, with assistance from a police helicopter, spent over three hours searching the area before finding her.

She was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Newport suffering from mild hypothermia. Darren Toogood from Bright Wight Images , who was at the scene, said: "Her black and white sheepdog, Monty, stayed by her side providing some heat during the 24 hours."

Answer the door, Jeeves I have always felt a little uneasy about the idea of the wealthy having butlers. Is it not a little demeaning? Surely people should be able to pick out their clothes unaided and pour a glass of wine? Well, yes and no! It is another British thing; ‘his lordship and Jeeves’ and all that. When I worked abroad as an expatriate newspaper publisher my wife and I had a cook, a nanny, a houseboy, gardener, a driver and a

guard to open the gate to the house! No, we didn’t have a personal assistant, we drew the line there. It was all a bit crazy, but the members of our staff were lovely and they became close friends and members of the family. Where recruitment was concerned we didn’t really have any choice in the matter. We were expected to have house staff and it worked as it kept people in a job and dispersed income in the local economy.

This is slightly different to employing domestic staff from a relatively wealthy nation, but the tide is turning. Recruitment agencies in London are now reporting a doubling of demand for British butlers to work for wealthy foreign clients overseas, some 80 per cent of them going to China. ‘I say Jeeves, a quick course in Mandarin?’

Trying to make it easier Brenan folk song to open a business anthology published Mijas council has sent a letter to regional premier José Antonio Griñán asking the Junta de Andalucia to change the law that regulates the opening of businesses. The move coincides with the publication of a World Bank report that ranks Spain at 136 out of 185 countries examined by the Bank when it comes to difficulties involved in opening a business. According to the report, Doing Business 2013, it is more difficult to open a

business in Spain than in such Third World countries as Afganistan, Burundi, Iran, Kosovo, Kenya, Morocco, Nepal, Nicaragua, Ruanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Yemen or Zambia. In Mijas as in the rest of Andalucia, it takes months to get the necessary paperwork together, which puts a lot of people off even trying. The World Bank reported a more extreme case – in Sevilla, one man spent €10,000 on paperwork and had to wait three years before he could open his

business. Now, Mijas council wants to cut through all the bureaucracy involved and has proposed that certain types of businesses should be allowed to open after making what it calls a “Responsible Declaration” or declaration of responsibility. The Rajoy government has promised to make it easier to set up businesses in order to create new jobs faster but so far no steps have been taken in that direction.

Still waiting for nuclear clean-up The town of Palomares in Almeria is literally between the devil and the deep blue sea, waiting for the Americans to come back and clean up the area contaminated by four US nuclear warheads that dropped from the sky on January 17th, 1966. An American B-52G bomber had collided with a KC-135 tanker plane during routine air-to-air refuelling and broke apart 31,000 ft above the area. Three of the bomber's H-bombs landed in or around Palomares, the fourth landed about five miles offshore in the Mediterranean. No local people were killed or injured but all four Americans on the refuelling plane died and three of the seven men on the B-52 were killed (the four others managed to eject safely).

US but to this day no-one really knows just how much plutonium is still out there because the US has never said how much the bombs were carrying to begin with.

Within days of the crash, some 700 American airmen and scientists were on the beach looking for the nukes. The two that fell to earth unsupported by parachutes blew apart on impact, scattering highly toxic, radioactive plutonium dust. The Americans literally scraped up the first three inches of topsoil, sealed it in barrels, and shipped it to a storage facility back in the

Vice ring smashed Tha National Police have dismantled a gang which used prostitutes to distribute cocaine, hashish and marijuana in hostess clubs and on the streets along the Costa del Sol and in the Campo de Gibralatar, as well as in Madrid and Burgos. Twenty people of different nationalities have been detained in raids on 13 clubs, private homes and warehouses. The investigation began in February this year when a Rumanian woman reported to police in La Linea that she had been forced to prostitute herself and sell drugs. Police investigations revealed that one part of the gang cultivated marijuana which was later distributed by another group. They stored the drugs in warehouses around Malaga province. A third group consisting mainly of Colombians handled distribution in Toledo and Madrid.

Spanish investigators estimate that between 15 and 25 pounds of the material ended up in the soil which can’t be moved without dispersing the plutonium latent in it. So the local people can't walk in the fenced-off area, or farm it or build on it. The message from the Spanish Department of Energy has been: "Let the plutonium lie and there's no problem." Now, 46 years after the accident and repeated demands from the people of Palomares, Spain and the US may be reaching a permanent solution.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who, he reported, had said, the problem would be solved before her mandate was up. The US State Department quickly said no such commitment had been made, but that serious talks are under way. No-one knows yet when an agreement will be reached or who will pay for the second clean-up, how it will be done, or where the contaminated soil will be stored. So the residents of Palomares continue waiting – as they have for nearly half a century. Palomares Deputy Mayor Juan Jose Perez told reporters recently that the council hopes to turn the tragedy into something positive – like building a museum in the shape of a B-52 bomber – to explain how it all happened. "We could offer guided walking tours through the affected areas," he said.

Worst olive harvest since 1995 The Junta de andalucia’s agriculture department estimates that the olive harvest will yield 625,300 tons of olive oil this year, down 62 per cent from last year. in Jaen, the region’s main producer, the loss will be even bigger – down 75 per cent with an estimated loss of €300 million. However, a Junta spokesman said that the drop would be covered by the stock of olive oil in hand which would keep the price of the finished product more or less stable. But he added that andalucia, which accounts for more than 80 per cent of the olive oil produced in Spain – will lose out on the world market because other producer countries had not suffered the same adverse meteorological conditions as Spain this year – scarce rainfall and very high temperatures for the most of the summer. Memo from

Voice Madrid Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Misguided opposition

Nationalist miscalculations

W

T

e’d have to go back 30 years to find a Spanish prime minister as universally set upon as Mariano Rajoy is today, and that would be Adolfo Suarez, the golden boy of the Transition who ended up with the whole world against him – including his own party – by the time he resigned in January 1981. Rajoy doesn’t have the whole world against him yet – the King and his party still support him and despite the cuts a lot of voters are still willing to back him, if Sunday’s regional election in Galicia is anything to go by. The Partido Popular’s premier there, Albert Nuñez Feijoo, was re-elected with a majority of three – two more seats than last time, in an election that the pundits said would be a judgement on Rajoy’s government. The whole world in Rajoy’s case is the opposition which has fallen on him like a pack of howling wolves since the day he won the general election.

T

he Spanish Left seems to think that it should have a monopoly on government and I think this is because Felipe Gonzalez’s Socialist government lasted 14 years. Not many governments last that long in Europe or other countries where there are no limits on presidential terms, as in the United States. I only caught the last year and a half of Jose Maria Aznar’s government and I remember thinking – as I watched Parliament in action on TV – how petty the opposition was. Most of the smaller parties, even the nationalist ones, only attacked the Aznar government on specific issues – unlike the Socialists, whose leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero took umbrage if one of the members on the government benches so much as sneezed. I used to quite enjoy watching him popping up and down like a jack-in-the-box to make some totally insignificant point.

W

hen Zapatero was in power, the only opposition came from the PP. By this time the nationalist parties were eager to suck up to Zapatero as a way of wringing more concessions out of him for their regions, something they hadn’t been able to do with Aznar. As a result, they tended to abstain when they disagreed with a government bill, leaving the PP to battle on alone.

N

ow, when members of the opposition parties are not screaming their heads off in Parliament, they’re joining in the protest marches, which are fast becoming a daily event. I think Rajoy’s must be the most

marched against government of all times, although I gather Felipe Gonzalez had to put up with quite a lot towards the end.

T

he Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) has been extremely active in most of these protests, with the exception of last year’s M-15 youth movement protests. The IU tried to get in on that but the M-15 wanted nothing to do with professional politicians.

I

n an effort to try to get back on to centre stage after their disastrous performance in the last general election, the Socialists have been backing all these protests to the hilt, misguidedly allying themselves with the IU. Last week, when the schoolkids were on strike against the education cuts, 50 protesters, most of them adults, gathered outside a school run by the Silesians in Merida in Extremadura, yelling “bring out the priests so we can burn them to death”. Three adults were later arrested, all belonging to the United Left. Shades of the civil war! These are exactly the sort of “friends” a self-respecting Socialist Party should be avoiding like the plague.

L

ast Sunday’s two regional elections should have brought the Socialists to their senses. They lost seven seats in Galicia and nine in the Basque Country and the talking heads on Sunday night’s special TV programme to analyse the results were already wondering if Socialist leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba would resign. He hasn’t been seen on TV since Sunday’s results became known and after a meeting of the inner circle, which Rubalcaba attended, party spokeswoman Elena Valenciano told reporters he had no intention of resigning nor had he been asked to. She admitted Sunday’s results had been disastrous and said the Party would be “reflecting deeply” about its future. She then spouted out the same old loony left nonsense that led to Sunday’s disaster in the first place.

I

t now remains to be seen how the Socialist Party will fare in the Catalan regional election on November 25th. The Socialists managed to form two coalition governments there between 2003 and 2009 but the CiU – the region’s “traditional” ruler – is expected to win. The Partido Popular has never done well in Catalonia but this time around they just might come out ahead of – or at least neck and neck with – the Socialists, who don’t deserve anything better for being so misguided.

he Partido Popular made sweeping gains at the polls in Galicia this past Sunday, leaving a badly bruised Socialist Party to do some much needed soul searching to determine what the future holds for Spain's major opposition force. Even in the Basque Country, where the two parties both did poorly, the Socialists, who have always received a good showing in past races, got the shock of their lives when voters said no to Patxi López and swept in the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and its soon to be coalition partner, EH Bildu.

T

here are calls for Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba to step down, the loudest coming from Madrid Socialist president Tomas Gomez, who badly wants to take over the national leadership. But this isn’t the time to replace a national leader, not when we are dealing with a lot of uncertainty and especially when this PP government cannot get a grip on the crisis. Some inside the Socialists are worried because they do not have a strong candidate for the November 25th election in Catalonia. But if the Socialists do lose again badly next month, there will definitely be stronger calls for Rubalcaba to step down before the end of the year.

T

he abertzale (Basque left) front has come a long way since last year when people across Spain were complaining that the formation was nothing but a front for ETA. But now Bildu has a wide range of support. The people in the Basque Country seem pretty much prepared to put their past aside and give peace a chance. But the troublesome factor resulting from this vote is the insistence of PNV leader Iñigo Ukullu on holding a referendum next year in the same manner that Artur Mas in Catalonia wants to include this in his platform for next year. Last week, Mas of the Catalan CiU nationalist bloc and Ukullu announced that they would embark on a nationwide campaign to "educate" Spaniards about the need for regions to determine their own future. It seems that these two renegade leaders want to start political discontent across Spain.

B

ut the real answer lies in what Spaniards really want. There are some people who think that these two leaders just want to start trouble at a time when Spaniards don't need more tension. But Mas and Ukullu believe

that they can take advantage of the ongoing frustration across this country to further their goals. Yes, people across the nation are frustrated with their leaders and political parties, but fuelling more tension with nationalist rhetoric is not going to help them win any friends.

W

hen the two try to launch what they believe could turn into a pro-independence front no doubt they are going to meet a lot of resistance. It is best that they campaign from inside their own regions because no one else across Spain will give them the sympathy they need.

More of the same

W

e are right back where we started from. After last week’s summit of European leaders, nothing could be clearer. Germany held firm to “her” own position, France was still in the same seat, pushing for quick action for a greater banking union, and Spain... well... Spain was once again murky when it came down to whether to ask for a bailout package. One thing that came out was the fact that the Brussels bunch don’t seem too keen to rush into things when it comes to establishing a comprehensive banking union. The leaders say that this probably won’t become reality until perhaps sometime during the last part of 2013, which is bad news for Spain. The Popular Party government of Mariano Rajoy was hoping that the €60 billion it hopes to get from Brussels to shore up the Spanish banking system would be here by the end of the year. But it looks like it isn't going to happen. Spain still wants that money to go directly to the banks with the hope that it won't have to add that debt to its deficit. But that too isn’t going to happen.

G

ermany insists that the money be funnelled through the Spanish government which in turn has its obligations to pressure the banks to give it back when they can. And as Angela Merkel says, there isn't any existing legal mechanism within EU regulations that could allow Brussels to collect that money directly from banks in any member state. The PP government doesn't seem to understand this, or doesn’t want to understand it. Rajoy continues to insist that his way is the best, but no one is listening.

“Taking the Leap!” Last week Adrian Taylor told us about the way he is changing his life. He was unhappy with the amount of weight he had put on and, being a professional chef, it was very difficult to stay away from all the goodies. He had tried diets before and nothing worked so Adrian has gone for an Hypnotic Gastric Band. This week, he tells us how he’s progressing and, like the rest of us when we diet, there are some ups as well as downs!

bowl of cereal” but my body was saying “NO, I’m full”!

Episode 2 A New Way Of Life

Every time I went out anywhere, I found people commenting on how different my attitude was towards food and drink.

Day one of my banded experience found me doing some crazy things. To the people around me who knew what I was like, I seemed to be a different person, but to me I wasn’t.

The week passed quickly and it was soon time for my first weigh in. Off I went to Stuart Ashing for my official weights and measures. The results were in!!

The first thing I did was head to the supermarket for the weekly shopping, only to find myself drawn to the vegetable aisle and not – which had previously been the case – to the crisps and junk food. I found myself picking up random boxes and reading the nutritional information, even to the point I was craving muesli! I had hated that “Rabbit Food” but there I was, wanting it!!

WEEK ONE: Total Weight loss 5kg (11lb) and 16.5cm (6.5”) off my measurements.

After this weirdness, I headed home, muesli in hand. I poured myself a portion and set off eating. 45 minutes later, I’m still eating, not because I didn’t like it, just because I couldn’t physically eat anymore and I was trying to force myself to finish it. This made me feel so strange! My head was saying “Come on, it’s only a

The rest of the day continued in the same way, serving the same portion sizes I always had, just to find myself leaving half of it because I was feeling too full. During the rest of the week, I experienced similar issues but also found myself cooking more than I had in a while.

WOW!!!! Five bags of sugar gone just like that! I was bouncing off the walls with excitement!! What would happen in the next week? I had no idea but this was the beginning of a new way of life.

annoying person ever, with lines like “Obviously DIET Coke, you don´t lose 11lb in a week with the full fat.” To be totally honest, I was a bit of a pain and so came the payback. If I was going to act like a fool, then I would have to meet the challenges. Stuart Ashing sent me an email, telling me that the first challenge was to produce homemade low fat hummus and taste test it against store bought and homemade versions from the other people participating in the Hypnotic Gastric Band. Off to Stuart’s house for the week two weigh-in, armed with my tub of hummus. The judgement was to take place after my weigh in… WEEK TWO: Total Weight Loss +1kg (+ 2.2lb) OMG! I had gained weight!! What on earth had gone wrong? Was it Karma for all the stupid comments I had made? Then came the Measurements : 7.6cm (3”) less! “How does that work?”

NEW Weight 157kg

Episode 3 The Challenges Begin After the results of week one, I was buzzing! I was telling anyone and everyone who would listen how much I’d lost. To be honest, I was probably the most

I was confused, I’d been doing so well. “Muscle weighs more than fat”, Stuart explained “so obviously, as you have lost in measurement, we can only assume that the weight has gone to muscle.” After such a

big loss last week, I was so deflated. Maybe I could cheer myself up with the Hummus Challenge. We sat around the table, everyone tasting the different tubs of hummus. Bowl 3 was voted the winner. WOO HOO! Bowl 3 was mine!! Might not have lost the weight but I was still a winner… Then Karma reared its ugly head again with a NEW CHALLENGE – If Stuart and Sandie can get 200 likes on their Facebook page http://www.facebook.com /home.php#!/HypnoGastri cBandEurope, Stuart will do a photo shoot on the beach wearing a Mankini. If they reach 300, I have to do it too! Challenge Accepted!! NEW WEIGHT 158kg (By the way, if you want the hummus recipe, go to the above mentioned Facebook page and we’ll send it to you.) Community News Benefits and Winter Fuel Payment Extract from a recent British Embassy press release With the usual heat waves hitting Spain this summer, many (British) expat residents will have chosen to return to the UK during July and August to escape the high temperatures. Now that autumn is here, many are beginning to return to Spain to enjoy the milder weather. Some expats may be intending to spend the entire winter here, others just a few weeks or months. But however long your stay, it is important that if you receive a UK

benefit and are going abroad, even for just a short time, you notify the office that pays your benefit before you leave for Spain. In fact any change in your circumstances, such as moving in with a partner, starting work, or even moving house, should be reported immediately to the relevant authority paying your benefit or pension. Toni’s First In Cards Toni opened First In Cards in Fuengirola 15 years ago and, after running a successful business, has decided to “live it up in the sun”. The shop is now under new ownership and has undergone a major transformation. Ali worked in a card and gift shop in Estepona for five years and is now proud to be the owner of First In Cards with her friend Jayne – who previously owned the English Pie Shop and is a well-known character on the coast. They are both very excited about entering this venture together and are stocking a much larger range of greeting cards starting from just €1 (easy on the purse) and fantastic gifts for all

The tour started in Lamilla Street where there are outstanding views of the Genal valley. It was obvious from the beginning that this place is an outdoor museum with many works of art of astonishing quality exhibited in various spots

After the walk through Genalguacil the group boarded the bus for an amazing drive through the Serrania de Ronda to the famous town of Jimena de la Frontera. This gem of a village has a checkered historical past, having been inhabited at various times

Pet of the Week

An intrepid group of explorers from the Coin Branch of the Royal British Legion took a coach trip to the historic town of Jimena de la Frontera in Cadiz province last Saturday, October 20th. It was a beautiful day and – feeling especially adventurous – their fearless leader, Jim Cross, decided to treat the group to a picturesque tour of the Paraje Natural Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja just north of Estepona. The highlight of this detour was a walk through the beautiful village of Genalguacil.

The shop also stocks a large variety of craft-ware for those of you who are creative and would like to design your own cards.

With a present population of just over 9,000 inhabitants (some 1,000 of whom are foreign residents – many British), its narrow cobbled streets and white washed Andalusian houses, it certainly retains its village ambience and was a delight to visit. KYLIE is a female Mastin cross. Born about 1st March 2011. She had been hanging around some buildings and the security guard had been giving her bread for the last four days. She looked as though she had had puppies but they could not be found and her milk had dried up so it was possibly a while ago. She is a very friendly dog and walks well on the leash. Kylie would make a wonderful pet for someone willing to give her a loving home. Tel: 626 942 427, or visit our website: www.animalsin-distress.eu We are happy to say that little Gris from FAMA who was featured last week now has a new home.

It is imperative that a responsible adult watch the puppy while he is loose in the house. They will each give you a signal that they need to go. This signal will vary from puppy to puppy, but they will – all – if you watch them, tell you of their needs. The signal may be that he starts to sniff the area. Many start turning in a tight circle. It's a sign that you need to scoop him up and take him outside. Step Two. Have a designated toilet area. From a clean-up point of view, it is best to choose one specific area as your puppy's toilet. Dogs are creatures of habit. If you take him, each time, to the same spot, it will in a short time become a signal to him that it is potty time. It will also, later, help to prevent him from choosing your steps or patio as his toilet. This is a good idea from a strictly training point of view as well. The scent left by his previous visits act as a powerful olfactory stimulus. It is necessary to clean up after your puppy's visit as

many dogs refuse to walk in an area fouled by feces. An easy way to do this is to insert your hand into a plastic sandwich bag, scoop up the feces, turn the bag inside out and seal it. Step Three. Keep him in the area. Most puppies, unless they are restrained, will spend their time outside in play. They will chase butterflies, sniff where the mice have scurried through the grass, anything except doing what you have brought them there to do. When you give up and take them back inside, they will suddenly remember their need. It is advisable to take your puppy out on his leash. Let boredom remind him of why he is there. More next week...

British Volunteer Shirley Bassey tribute Awarded White Cross show not to be missed Retired British policeman Aubrey Thomas Bowles has been awarded the White Cross of Spain in recognition for his voluntary work at the National Police Station in Fuengirola.

Over the last 12 years Mr Bowles – pictured here in his British “Bobby” uniform – has provided valuable help to thousands seeking to obtain their necessary paperwork from the National Police. Mr Bowles's efforts have been greatly appreciated by both his Spanish work

colleagues and the many foreign residents he still helps daily.

After the hugely successful Adele tribute show, Macarena are proud to present Jacqui Peters as Shirley Bassey.

Approval from the Ministry which oversees the presentation of the White Cross Award was sought by the serving members of the National Police at Fuengirola on behalf of Mr Bowle or “Aubrey” as he is generally known.

Members of the Rancho del Rio Saturday pony club won an assortment of rosettes in the Los Prados dressage competition in Alhaurin el Grande at the weekend, despite the recent flooding that devastated their yard in Cartama. With two of their ponies, KC (pictured here) and Paloma – both saved from slaughter – they showed their enthusiasm and talent, ably encouraged by their teacher Jane Hepburn who was determined not to disappoint the children. Any fan of the spirited songstress from Tiger Bay should not miss this opportunity to see this wonderful tribute show. The delicious rodizio is a very special meal, not available anywhere else on the Costa del Sol. Firstly you help yourself to an extensive salad bar, then afterwards, the waiters will come to your table and carve – from skewers – a selection of beautifully cooked succulent meats and complement them with various

Anyone not wishing to eat is still welcome to come and watch the show and have a drink at the bar. The Shirley Bassey tribute show takes place

The Plot The Transylvanian, a popular nightclub, is holding its yearly Halloween anniversary party. Mike Hobb, the club owner has invited a few of his friends and social elite to attend the gala event and have a howling good time. Unfortunately, poor Mike will never get to enjoy the party as he has been found dead at the bottom of the wine cellar stairs. Was his

death due to natural causes or was it murder?????? Inspector I.C. Moore will guide you through the proceedings – then, with the Inspector’s help, it is up to you to interrogate the suspects and work out who the murderer is.

The suspects are: JOHN WOLFMAN – A Disc Jockey. With a wild mane of hair and a howling voice, John has earned himself the nickname – Wolf . He’s never without a repertoire of tunes that might be requested. PAM PYRE – A Disco Dancer. Never one to be out danced and the ultimate vamp, she flashes her elongated cuspids proudly while wearing her signature black dress and long scarf MUMFORD MUMMY CLUMMSIE – Security Doorman. A bit of a bungler,

especially when shaving. Mumford is usually seen with bits of toilet paper all over his face and body, which he uses as his disposable bandages. He carries a back up roll of toilet paper with him at all times. EVVA READY – A Barmaid. Familiar with just about any cocktail recipe. Evva can shake her shakers and swizzle a stick with ease. Her speciality drink is the ZOMBIE . FRANK N STEIN – A Playboy. Even with scars on his face and a permanent neck injury, Frank’s image as a man about town has not been dampened. IVANNA HUNT – Safari Guide. Just back from the deepest part of Africa, Ivanna wears her traditional Pith helmet, and carries her whip with her at all times. The lesson this week is to remember who it is you can trust, who has let you down in the past and who has always been there for you all along. You could be attracting key connections right now and this could take you well out of your comfort zone. This isn’t a time to be reckless but it is a time to try out new ideas that are geared up to improve your overall life. Make sure you look after your health and eat properly so that you don’t get run down. A plan that you initiated a while ago is about to be recovered, perhaps at the time you went a bit too fast too soon, now things are in place for it to proceed smoothly, revealing its true potential. A huge weight is about to be lifted from your shoulders either in the financial or relationship areas. Many difficulties are over, however others will be looking to you for direction, so let your words correspond with your actions. It is imperative you find a way to remain positive, you cannot allow anyone to turn your mood negative or to dampen your fire. Your personal relationships will factor strongly when it comes to this, you need to allow that burning flame within to remain strong as this allows you to do and accomplish just about anything you put your mind to. Nothing happens as a coincidence and others will be looking to you to take the lead. At the moment it all about being yourself and not losing yourself in another’s dreams mistaking them for your own. You have reached a serious corner where you need to be who you are and not bend or hide your light under a bushel just so that others do not feel threatened by your awesome presence. Have the courage to convey your own ideas, be that original, creative and unique person you are and express yourself with pride. The mind is a mighty powerful force and yours is firing on all cylinders this week, with such an active mind being organised is the key and make sure you stick to a plan as this will allow you to make accurate decisions and simplify your time. Your powers of attraction are strong right now and others will want to be around you as you are glowing with joy and brimming with fun. There is so much you have to accomplish and you are right on track.

LIBRA

You could feel taken for granted or unappreciated in some way, perhaps you have taken too much on your shoulders and have had trouble saying ‘no’ lately. There is a lot on your plate right now so take your time and systematically work your way through what needs doing, distractions will be tempting and September 23rd - you may find it hard to remain focused. Keep your cool, stay calm and October 22nd collected and you will be able to sail through.

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

A blast of fresh air has entered your realm, the pressures of modern life seem to slip away and you know where you are headed. There is still a lot to do though and you need to get back to work and get things done, so make your action plan and roll up your sleeves and get busy. There is no one that puts up a fight like a Scorpio and you are entering a crossroads that will require you to make some radical changes.

SAGITTARIUS An inner language promotes your natural best and with Mars in your sign, a rare kind of courage is now at your fingertips. Home life is drawing you and you feel a strong need to have a real foundation from which to build upon. Use your insights and listen to what your instincts are telling you. By the weekend the energy shifts November 22nd - and becomes so romantic, fun and social that it will be like a breath of fresh air, get December 21st out there and have fun while you can, there is much work forecast for the future.

CAPRICORN There is a tendency within you to stick to the original plan and not to deviate too much from it or walk to the other side, so at the moment a lot of adjustment is needed as there are opposing forces interrupting your take on things. This is going to be a fast week with a lot going on around you, avoid December 22nd - being caught up in whirlwinds not of your making, and don’t be rushed or January 19th hurried into making decisions, use this time to connect with friends and family.

Great fun biscuits for trick or treaters – make a day or two ahead, why not get the kids to give you a hand, then fill in before your spooky guests arrive

Orange pumpkin face cookies Ingredients:

Makes 12

• 40g butter , softened • 175g plain flour • 50g icing sugar • finely grated zest 1 medium orange FOR THE FILLING • 100g mascarpone • 1 tsp icing sugar • 25g plain chocolate (55% cocoa solids is fine), melted FOR THE GLAZE 50g icing sugar about 1 tbsp orange juice

• •

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to fan 160C/ conventional 180C/gas 4. Put the butter in a bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until smooth. Add the flour, icing sugar and orange zest and beat together to make a softish dough. Knead into a ball and wrap in cling film. Chill for one hour. 2. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of about 3mm. Cut 24 circles with a 7.5 cm round plain cutter. Put them on a couple of baking sheets. 3. Using a small sharp knife, cut out Hallowe'en faces on 12 of the circles. Gather up the spare biscuit dough and press into pumpkin stem shapes, trimming with a sharp knife. Press to the top of each biscuit with a knife to join. Make lines

on the face biscuits with the back of a roundbladed knife, to look like the markings on a pumpkin. Bake all the biscuits for about 15 minutes until pale golden. Leave to set for a while, then cool completely on a wire rack. 4. Mix the glaze ingredients to make a smooth, runny icing, adding a bit more juice if needed, then set aside. For the filling, beat the mascarpone with the icing sugar, then stir in the cooled melted chocolate. 5. Spread the filling over the cooled plain biscuits, then press the 'face' ones on top – do this just before you want to eat them, otherwise they go soft. Brush with the glaze, using a clean paint brush or pastry brush. Eat the same day.

Seasons in the sun Here comes winter - Ya viene el invierno

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

It is not up to you to make things happen on your own, no man is an island and it is time to share the load, offload and delegate this week. Your mind is likely to be very active and full of interesting ideas, you will literally be thinking outside the box in some cases, and it would be beneficial to write it all down, it may be useful in the future. You are heading for a social weekend but you could be feeling tired, enjoy yourself but make sure you get adequate rest.

Isn't it strange that people were still complaining about the heat until quite recently. However, it seems rain and some cold weather are on the way, if we can believe the weather forecasters. Of course in Spanish there are four seasons Las cuatro estaciónes: La primavera - spring, el verano - summer, el otoño - autumn and el invierno - winter. Although it often seems we go straight from summer to winter. So, estación means season. However, it also means station. La estación de autobús - the bus station and la estación de ferrocarril - the railway station. But, be careful. The police station is la comasaría. If you want to talk about the high season it is la temporada alta while the low season is, of course, la temporada baja. If something is out of season it is fuera de temporada whereas if you find something in season it is de temporada as in frutas de temporada - fruits in season. An animal in season is said to be en celo. If you want to season food, you use the verb condimentar.

AQUARIUS

January 20th February 18th

Is there potential to rebuild something that you thought was broken? Perhaps with better materials the truth will reveal itself or perhaps all it needs is a better approach. You will be endowed with an unusual courage to take a leap into the unknown guided by your sixth sense. This week is all about discovering abilities that you didn’t know you had and consequently you will see life from a different perspective. Personal wealth and abundance is round the corner.

And it won't be long now until we will be wishing people Season's Greetings - Felices fiestas. Ya está. Hasta la próxima. Valerie

PISCES

February 19th March 20th

It is time to take an objective view of your life, to impersonalise yourself and take on an unbiased viewpoint and detached perspective. This is easier said than done as your expectations can be too high and what comes naturally and easy for you often requires a lot of work and effort for others. This weekend your powers of attraction are high and the extra attention will be somewhat distracting making it hard to get things done.

Five foods to make you smarter You don’t have to make radical diet changes to become a genius because all of these brain-boosting foods form part of a normal everyday diet. l Oily fish is the ultimate brain food. Omega-3 fatty acids – found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines – are invaluable for just about every part of our body, and it seems our brains are no different. Past studies have shown eating oily fish three times a week reduces the risk of brain problems by 26 per cent and prevents against memory loss. l Dark, leafy greens such as spinach, kale and broccoli are packed with antioxidants, including vitamin C and betacarotene, which are essential to keep your body and brain in good health. They are also a good source of folate, which can help to speed up information processing and memory recall. Research has also shown that the folate found in leafy green vegetables can help to protect against cognitive decline in old age.

a good source of iron, which is essential for creating red blood cells which carry oxygen to the brain, helping to keep your mental faculties sharp and to keep you alert and focused. Eggs are also a good source of vitamin B12 – a deficiency of which can lead to memory loss and confusion – and iodine, which has been shown to improve problem-solving abilities even in only mildly deficient children. l

Green tea Your brain is made up of around 80 per cent water, so keeping it properly hydrated is vital for helping it to function at optimum levels. A Korean study has found that green tea can help to increase mental alertness and enhance your memory. Researchers have also found that the

antioxidants found in green tea can help to protect the brain and reduce risk of dementia. l

Chocolate Eating milk chocolate is unlikely to improve your IQ score – it’s dark chocolate, rich in brainboosting chemicals called flavonoids, which can enhance your cognitive skills. Research has found that flavonoids induce the creation of new neurons in the brain and also improve their ability to form new memories. Studies also show that flavonoids improve blood flow to the brain. One study of adult women found that when given flavonoid-rich chocolate drinks, the blood flow to participants' brains increased within two hours and they performed better on a complex mental task

Brain change link to girls’ anti-social behaviour The brains of teenage girls with behavioural disorders are different from those of their peers, according to a study funded by the Wellcome Trust and Medical Research Council (MRC). UK and Italian researchers conducted brain scans of 22 teenage girls who had conduct disorder and compared them with scans of 20 who did not. They also checked the scans against others previously taken of teenage boys with conduct disorder. They found that part of the brain called the amygdala was smaller in the brains of male and female teenagers with conduct disorder than in their peers.

and understanding your own emotions. However the same area was larger in boys with conduct disorder than healthy peers, and researchers are not yet sure why that is the case. The brains of those with the worst behaviour were most different from the norm. Experts suggest it may be possible to use scans to spot problems early, then offer social or psychological help. Conduct disorder is a psychiatric condition which leads people to behave in aggressive and anti-social ways, and which can increase the risk of mental and physical health problems in adulthood.

The amygdala is involved in picking up whether or not others feel afraid – and plays a role in people feeling fear themselves. Girls with conduct disorder also had less grey matter in an area of the brain called the insula – linked to emotion

Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip Klingon wedding for couple at convention

Certainly a different way of doing things... … and they wore false foreheads and wigs too! Jossie Sockertopp, 23, and Sonnie Gustavsson, 29, who met four years ago travelled from their native Sweden to marry at a Star Trek convention being held in London last weekend, boldly going where no man had gone before. They got the idea from an episode of the programme that showed Klingon Worf marrying the science officer Jadzia Dax in a Klingon ceremony. Ms. Sockertopp said that they had found the Deep Space Nine episode “very romantic” and decided that their wedding had to be different too. The couple dressed in Klingon

fashion complete with prosthetic foreheads, wigs and floor length Klingon red robes with matching diamante headdresses, while “Here comes the bride” was replaced by three bangs of a gong to call the couple to the altar which was adorned with screens and a throne made from animal hide and bones. The celebrant, Peter Wyllie, conducted the wedding ceremony and included some phrases in Klingon, the gutteral-sounding language spoken by the Star Trek characters. "We spent a bit of time with a couple of guys who were

professional Klingons and they checked it through with me, but after that it was just hope really," Mr Wyllie said, adding that it sounded similar to the Welsh language. The couple spent their honeymoon at the convention but had gone through a legal ceremony in Sweden a couple of days beforehand so they are now well and truly married in both parts of the universe!

Does size really matter? OK, I admit I was one of the sceptics when I learned that the formidable Jack Reacher of Lee Child’s books’ fame was being played by the diminutive Tom Cruise but I have now watched the trailer and I actually think it’s going to work. Cruise’s attitude in his films seems to make you forget how small he is and he certainly appears to be using all his tough guy

Swedish designed

tactics in the trailer. Let’s hope that when the film hits our screens at the end of the year it turns out as good as the preview. The official synopsis reads: "When a gunman takes five lives with six shots, all evidence points to the suspect in custody. On interrogation, the suspect offers up a single note: ‘Get Jack Reacher!’ So begins an extraordinary chase for the truth, pitting Jack Reacher

against an unexpected enemy, with a skill for violence and a secret to keep." So, let’s wait and see if size really does matter or not! Kym Wickham

Mike Hamence The gardens of the Punta Almina condominium in Sabinillas ('Downtown Manilva') are a joy to see. In the peace and quiet of an early morning I'm reminded of many an oasis. At one end of the gardens is a small plaza which is home to four bar/restaurants, with two more on an adjacent corner. All are popular with mainly English clientele, hence the nick-name 'Albert Square'. At the opposite end a block of apartments houses two bars cheek by jowl. On the night of July 1st, the night that Spain 'stood on its head', there was bedlam in 'Albert Square', when over 300 people went mad outside those two Spanish bars. Our gardens are gated and secure but somehow local youths got in and started throwing 'thunder flashes'; one exploded beneath our balcony. Our two cats panicked and one

Sabinillas disappeared into the night. Her name is 'Mummy Cat' for up to the day we caught her eight years ago and took her to our trusted vet Ron Rosenveld to be 'fixed' and micro-chipped, she had been a little tramp producing litter after litter of offspring. Although still semi-feral she settled down to a lazy life with us, regular healthy food and an inside toilet cleaned twice daily! And her macho randy boy friends had to look elsewhere! When she didn't come home the morning after the July 1st bedlam or the next day I went searching, looking up trees and so on. Our condo President Paul kindly sent out a 'round robin' email in English and Spanish. Neighbours said they had seen her around, but why didn't she come home? I feared that in her panic she had jumped into an open underground refuse bin.

Weeks went by and we gave up hope. Then one night in mid-August a neighbour called to say she had seen Mummy Cat in the gardens. I went out into the sweltering night and sure enough it was her! For the next two days she came timidly to the steps leading from our apartment block down into the gardens. She was emaciated, filthy and stinking from wherever she had been and, ravenous! On the third morning there she was in the kitchen having found her way in again through the cat flap. So now she's home and that's all that matters. Ron Rosenveld says she will never run away again but I sense that if she were human, she would hope that Spain doesn't win any more football cups...for a while at least!'

Michael Smithson Fuengirola I just wanted to write and say a very big “Thank You” to The News for helping me to sell my car. I had had it on a garage forecourt for over three months with a deal of some commission on the sale to the garage owner when it was sold. Nearly four months on and with not a “bite” for it I decided to take a photo of the car and put it in your “classifieds” section.

The paper came out on the Wednesday, I had seven calls for it by Friday and it was sold to a cash buyer at very nearly the asking price on the Saturday. Of course, the condition and the price of the car were right

but, by putting it in The News I have not only saved myself the worry of having it hanging around, I’ve also saved a small fortune on commission to the garage who were unable to sell it for me. Now you’re even more my favourite paper!

Our Neighbour This week scientists have discovered a planet orbiting around our nearest neighbour, and its Earth sized!

W

hen you look into the night sky all the stars that you can see are really quite close in the scale of things. Yes, they are all billions, if not trillions of miles away from us but even so, if you try to imagine the size of the universe it is mind boggling. If our galaxy, the Milky Way, was shrunk down to just one metre across then every star that can be seen with the naked eye would be in a circle no more than 6mm wide. he stars are so far away that we can’t measure them in miles, instead we use light years. A light year is the distance that a beam of light would travel in one year. Light travels at 186,000 miles a second. The Moon is about one and a quarter light seconds away. The Sun is eight light minutes away from us – you are seeing it as it was eight minutes ago.

T

I

T

nd just last week astronomers discovered that our neighbour Alpha Centauri B also has a planet orbiting around it. Our closest neighbour has a family! But before we get too excited, this isn’t the famous ‘Goldilocks’ planet. i.e. not too hot or not too cold to support life. Of all the Exoplanets that have been discovered none of them has been a suitable candidate for life. They have either been too big or too close or too far away from their host star, or simply just not made of the right stuff to sustain life. And Alpha Centauri’s planet, whilst being Earth sized, is placed closer to its star than even Mercury is to our star and so must be tremendously hot and so the existence of any life there is very improbable.

he light from Saturn takes about one hour to reach us and from Pluto it takes about a day to get here. If you drew a circle around the Sun that was 10 light years wide then there are only 12 stars in that circle. And the most distant star that can be seen without a telescope is a star called Deneb, a super bright star in the constellation of Cygnus the Swan. Deneb is ‘only’ 7,000 light years away. The light from Deneb left in 5,000 BC and has only just arrived here.

T

he closest star to us is actually not one single star but a group of three stars all orbiting around each other. We call it the Alpha Centauri System. Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B and the much fainter Proxima Centauri is the closest of the trio. Alpha Centauri is 4.37 light years away or 25,689,592,880,812 miles. Unfortunately we can’t see Alpha Centauri from here as it is in the southern part of the sky and so is never visible from Spain.

F

or many years astronomers have been studying stars trying to find evidence of planets orbiting around them and in 1992 the very first ‘Exoplanet’ was discovered, a planet existing in another solar system circling around another star. Since then another 842 planets have been discovered, meaning that there are probably more planets than there are stars.

t is very difficult to see the planet with any of today’s telescopes as the host star is always so much brighter. Exoplanets are discovered either by the way they cause the host star to wobble as the planet orbits it or by the tiny dip in light from the star as the planet passes in front of it. The light from the star can then be blocked out and only the really large planets can be spotted.

A

T

he new planet is so close to Proxima Centauri that it completes one orbit in less than four days. It is likely to keep only one face permanently turned toward the star in the same way that the Moon keeps one face toward the Earth. It must be a very strange sight from the planet’s surface with Proxima Centauri dominating the sky and the other two stars in the system shining much brighter. But we have a family of eight planets in our solar system, it is probable that this new planet also has brothers and sisters too. Enjoy your stargazing!

Opel reveals new Cascada Convertible

Opel/Vauxhall has revealed its new midsize Cascada convertible in a series of photos. The car goes on sale in early 2013. The two-door softtop enters the Opel lineup in Europe as a replacement for the Astra TwinTop. Opel Chairman Thomas Sedran said the Cascada will round off the brand's product offensive that also includes the Mokka subcompact SUV, Adam minicar and Ampera plug-in hybrid.

Lucky Lorenzo keeps it upright Dani Pedrosa reduces the gap to Jorge Lorenzo's world championship lead at a rain-lashed Sepang…

Tense rather than thrilling were the words used to describe this dismally wet 16th grand prix of the season. Lorenzo tried to break away early from his pole start and all but Pedrosa went with his pace – he settled in and closed the small gap that Lorenzo had built. He then shadowed the factory Yamaha for ten laps, close enough to keep the pressure on the leader. With 10 laps of the scheduled 20 to go, Pedrosa eased the Honda past Lorenzo with a beautifully judged move to take the lead. The pair at this point were six seconds clear of Stoner in third.

As the rain intensified, so the puddles and streams across the track deepened. And with 14 laps completed, Stoner was beginning to close quickly on Lorenzo. After a nasty slide at turn one Lorenzo pointed to the sky, hoping that Race Direction would take notice of the conditions. Then, going into the last corner on the same lap, he lost his front on the brakes. Miraculously, a stab of the foot propped the bike up and he got away with it. It brought this reaction from Forward Racing rider Colin Edwards on Twitter "Jorge - Unbelievable reaction time to keep it on two wheels :- Oh, Good job Amigo!!!" The race was then red flagged, and after a delay the decision was taken to declare a full result as Pedrosa made it five wins in the last six.

C.O.G.S day out at Antequera Golf Pedrosa shadows Lorenzo before making his move

Britain’s Cal Crutchlow was left to reflect on a miserable weekend after a crash at this wet and wild Sepang GP cost him vital points in his quest to finish fifth in the championship. Crutchlow has now failed to finish in four of his last six races. The Tech 3 Yamaha rider had been making smooth progress through the field as he climbed from 10th position to fifth, passing Nicky Hayden and Stefan Bradl before going down at the final corner on lap 11. The 26-year-old suspects he may have lost the front end

of his M1 as a result of standing water on the track. Lorenzo leads by 23 points going into the final MotoGP races in Phillip Island and Valencia. He can still finish second or even third in both races to take the title. A resurgent Stoner can help team-mate Pedrosa if the two double up, but the Australian has his eyes on an incredible sixth home GP win in a row. That would not help Pedrosa's cause at all.

BMW shifts cars to USA BMW has shifted "tens of thousands" of cars that were originally targeted for Europe to the United States and Asia this year as sales weaken in the crisis-hit region. "Challenges in Europe are getting greater," Ian Robertson, sales chief for the world's largest luxury-car brand, told reporters on Wednesday at a company event in Munich. The region faces "a lot of bumps on the road" before it stabilises and an auto-market recovery could take years, he said. Europe's car industry is poised to suffer its biggest annual sales drop in 19 years in 2012. BMW has avoided the brunt of the European sovereign-debt crisis thanks to demand in the United States and China for models like the new 3-series sedan. The brand sold 14 percent more cars and SUVs in September globally, helping boost nine-month deliveries up 8.6 percent to 1.11 million vehicles. Robertson said he expects "good"

growth in the United States in October and November, and China is still attractive, even if growth has slowed since the beginning of the year. "The slowdown in China is part of what's happening in Europe," as the effects of the debt crisis ripple beyond the continent, he said. The growth elsewhere doesn't

help BMW's partners in Europe, and the company may need to help dealers through the crisis, especially in Spain where, Robertson went on to say, it faces "some very difficult decisions" on restructuring the dealership network.

MIJAS COSTA

This month’s Society Day saw us travel to Antequera Golf course with some concern about what sort of state the course would be in after the recent bad weather. Our fears were well founded with the course just about playable. I would commend the efforts of the Antequera golfing staff and management for what must have been a huge task in getting the course playable again. Local rules allowed us to gain a degree of relief from damaged areas, but with increasingly high winds play became difficult which was reflected in some of the scores. Nearest the pin on hole 4 was won by Brian Millwood. Nearest the pin hole 6 was won by Ian Brewer. Nearest the pin hole 16 was won by Charles Randall and the official nearest the pin on hole 18 was not won. Nearest the pin in 2 was won by Charles Randall on hole 9 with the longest drive on hole 15 being won by our treasurer Dave Haworth.

In the main singles competition, in third place with 27 points playing off 25 was Graham Tattersall, in second place playing off 14 with 28 points was Dave Haworth and in first place playing off 14 was Charles with a creditable 29 points. Best guest with 16 points playing off 25 was Nigel Walker. The bottom place went to Dell Allwood with 5 points winning the aptly named Plunger. In the team event, the winning four with 79 points (best 3 from 4) were Captain, Terry Birtles, Ian Brewer, Geoff Heading and Dave Haworth. Our congratulations to all winners and all those who travelled to Antequera to play under such difficult conditions. Next month we are travelling to Torrequebrada Golf Course on Thursday 15th for Captain’s day. We are looking forward to a good turn-out at such a glorious course. Terry Birtles ,Captain

Changes afoot at Miraflores

What a goalie!

Every autumn sees a regular occurence in the bowling scene on the coast, with the arrival of clubs (mostly from UK) on a tour to mark the end of their outdoor season and the beginning of the indoor season. It is generally a last chance to play bowls in warm sunshine before the onset of winter. The clubs on the coast look forward to these visits as it provides an opportunity to play with and meet new friends (and often to renew aquaintances from previous years with our regular visitors). This year has proved no exception and we have been pleased to entertain our visitors whose numbers have grown over the last couple of years.

A Bolivian goalkeeper has pulled off one of the most amazing sequences of penalty saves ever seen on a football pitch after he saved the same penalty three times. With the scores locked at 1-1 with 16 minutes left, Carlos Arias of Bolivian top-flight side Oriente Petrolero was called upon to try and stop a spot-kick taken by Universitario's Gabriel Rios. The striker hit a fine penalty, but Arias pulled off a marvellous dive to his right to push the ball around the post, showing why he has earned 39 international caps for his country. Everyone in the stadium was impressed with Arias's heroics apart from referee Evert Cuellar, who judged that Arias had come off his line early and ordered the spot-kick to be retaken. It's an offence that is almost never given, particularly since Arias was only a foot off his line but Cuellar stuck to his guns and Rios lined up again.

In many ways little has changed at Miraflores over the last few years, but last week proved that we can still surprise the members! At the annual pre-season meeting the first item on the agenda was the

announcement that after eight years, Carol and Grant Frost have decided to call it a day and retire properly! The secret had been well kept as all present were suitably shocked. The members were delighted to learn that the decision was a positive one as Grant and Carol feel it is time to make some changes to their life. They are staying in Spain and plan to spend more time playing bowls, golf and travelling (especially to UK to see their new grandson) and generally having fun! They would like to say thank you to the many friends they have made during their time at the club and hope to continue to see them on the other side of the bar. Club members will be enjoying a drink and nibbles with them on their last day which will be 31st October. The club are delighted to announce that Craig and Sandra Lewis, who will be well known to bowlers on the coast from their time at

Superbowl, are taking on the bar with effect from 1st November. They are looking forward to meeting many new and existing friends at their new location. The club and all its members wish them every success for the future. The timing of the change will give Craig and Sandra the opportunity to get aquainted with the club and how it operates before the highlight of our bowling calender the Miraflores Open. Finally, the Miraflores Open will be held from 11th - 20th November. This year we have a number of sponsors involved who will be sponsoring individual events. The overall value of prizes will be in the region of €2000. As usual the events will consist of Mixed Triples, Mixed Pairs and Men's and Ladies Singles for cash prizes, together with the usual scorecard draw (with a major prize to the value of

Sandra and Craig Lewis

€300- €400 provided by Francisco Camero SL) on finals day. This event is usually one of the most popular on the Costa del Sol with a large entry requiring the use of both greens. We hope this year will prove to be no exception. Entry fees are €8 per person per event. Posters and entry forms have been circulated to all of the clubs, but as it is an open competition non-affiliated bowlers are very welcome. Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips This week let’s look at the history of Poker which, in the modern world comes in many forms from 5 Card Stud to Razz. All use a 52 card deck as we know it but, 200 years ago, a card deck was just 20 cards, and TJQKA. There is evidence that the 20 card game was being challenged by the 52 card game in the mid-1830s. The gradual adoption of a 52 card pack was made to accommodate multi-players and to introduce the Flush – the Straight at this time was unknown. This ensured enough cards for the draw, turning Poker from a gamble such as Brag to a game of skill. It was the cowboys of the cattle-ranching states who started to play Jackpot, a form of Stud in which you could not open the betting

unless you had at least a pair of Jacks. Whiskey Poker, Draw, Stud and Jack Pots all appear in the 1875 edition of the American Hoyle, along with Mistygris, which was Poker with a 53rd card wild, namely the blank card accompanying every pack. The thing about this period is that the Straight was not a recognised hand. It was not until almost 1900 that it became part of the game. Following Draw and Stud, the third major division of the Poker game appeared, represented today by Texas Hold ‘em games involving one or more communal cards. The earliest of these appears in 1926 under the name ‘Spit In The Ocean’. Here, only four cards each are dealt but the Turn-up and the three other cards of

the same rank are all wild. We then arrive in the 1960s when Omaha and Stud were the main games in Europe with Stud and Hold ‘em in the USA. These are all five-cardhand Poker games which are known as ‘vying’ games. In 1970 we see the first WSOP and within 25 years this becomes the major Poker event in the world with millions in prize money every year and, of course, bragging rights with the coveted bracelets! A five-card vying game is one where no matter how many cards may be dealt to each player, the only valid combinations are those of five cards. In orthodox Poker as Texas Hold ‘em these are from highest to lowest: Straight Flush – Five cards in suit and sequence, Ace high

or low as (hearts) AKQJT or (spades) 5432A. Four-Of-A-Kind – four cards of the same rank and one kicker, as KKKKx. Full House – three of one rank and two of another, as QQQ44. Five Card Flush – five cards in suit but not in sequence, as (hearts) J9873. Straight – Five cards in sequence but not in suit, as T9876 Three-Of-A-Kind – known as 3s or triple, three of the same rank plus two of different ranks, as 777xy 2 Pair – as QQ99x 1 Pair – as 33xyz High Card, No Combination – as between two such hands the one with the highest card wins.

His second effort was solid if not brilliant, and as Arias again guessed correctly he saved it easily. But the ref still wasn’t satisfied, claiming that the goalie was once again off his line. Now, they were angry the first time, but second time around the furious Oriente players lost the plot completely. After failing to intimidate the match officials into changing their minds, they stormed off the pitch towards the dugout and initially refused to play on. A nine-minute break followed, after which Oriente decided they should play on. Once again Arias had to try and save the spot-kick, though this time it was a different taker. Edgar Escalante's effort was truly abysmal, weak and straight down the middle. Arias saved with ease, sparking delirium among the visiting players and fans, and Oriente held on for a draw.

Rio Ferdinand plays down rumours Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has poured cold water on reports that he plans to launch a breakaway union to protect the interests of black footballers. The union - which reportedly has a working name of The Federation of Black Players, but will be open to players from all ethnic backgrounds - would be self-funded by professionals at every level. However, Ferdinand, has taken to Twitter this morning to play down the suggestions.

Tommy Two Gloves King’s Cup Reintroduced makes his mark to Malaga Province Tommy Gainey fired a 10under-par round of 60 to clinch his maiden PGA Tour title by one shot from fellow American David Toms at the McGladrey Classic. Gainey, 37, made up seven strokes on the leaders as he finished 16 under with eight birdies and an eagle on the par-five 15th at Sea Island, Georgia. Jim Furyk, co-leader overnight with US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love, bogeyed the last to miss out on a play-off. Furyk ended third at 14 under with Love two strokes further back. have made Gainey the sixth player in PGA Tour history to record a 59. He hit his approach inside 20 feet but his birdie attempt came up short. Gainey has an unconventional swing – and that’s putting it mildly. As he himself said “I need two gloves and have a swing that makes me look like I’m trying to kill a cockroach with a crowbar” or as Brandel Chamblee said, “a swing that looks like a man trying to kill a snake with a garden rake”. Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey first gained notice as a cast member on two different seasons of the Golf Channel series The Big Break. He first appeared in The Big Break IV, then returned and won the title on Big Break VII: Reunion. He had recorded just one top-10 in his previous 30 starts on the 2012 PGA Tour.

Under the auspices of the Andalucian Bowling Federation (FAB) the provincial final between two of the strongest clubs on the Costa del Sol was fought out at Santa Maria BC between Benalmadena, captained by Mike Stapleton and Benavista, captained by Barry Pemberton, on 26th September. The result could not have been closer, with Benavista winning a oneend play-off after both teams had tied on points.

National King’s Cup Final – Mojacar, Almeria The National Final, hosted by Almeria BC, (Los Gallardos), Mojacar, Almeria, should have been a play-off between the winning clubs from Almeria, Malaga, Alicante North & Alicante South. Unfortunately the two Alicante teams dropped out of the tournament close to the planned dates, (13th/14th October), leaving some tough decisions to be made by the Almeria and Malaga Federation Delegates, Jan Dando and John Carr, respectively, Benavista Captain, Barry Pemberton and the Benavista Team. I am pleased to report that goodwill and determination,

Provincial teams’ pre-match preparation

from all the parties to stage the final – despite the obvious setback – won through. It was decided that to make it worthwhile for the Malaga team to travel, the weekend would include the King’s Cup final between Benavista and Indalo clubs, and two matches between Team Almeria and Team Malaga, (making it the first time these two provincial sides would play against each other). The logistics, accommodation and event formatting proved severe challenges for this ‘hybrid package’ and thanks must go to Margaret Kane, Team Malaga Ladies Captain, for producing a workable format and Sue Mannall, Almeria Fixtures Coordinator, for recruiting the Almeria team at very short notice. The results of the three matches gave comfort to both provinces, with Indalo BC beating

Benavista BC in a close contest for the Spanish National King’s Cup Final and Team Malaga winning both of the two matches against Team Almeria. The social climax of the weekend occurred on Saturday night, when the visitors and hosts got together for dinner after which the King’s Cup was presented to Jan Dando by John Carr, who thanked all concerned for converting a near disaster situation into a resounding success. Margaret Kain ended procedures by entreating the Almeria bowlers to take part in the reinstated Andalucian Championships, to be held in Malaga province from the 23rd to 27th April 2013, where the warm welcome received from the Almeria bowling community would be fully reciprocated. Joaquin saves the day Manuel Pellegrini had stressed to his team to focus on this game rather than tonight's historic Champions League against AC Milan but his words seemed to go unheeded as Malaga were punished for a sloppy start. Omar Ramos Suarez for Valladolid danced past at least five Malaga players only to have his shot saved by Caballero, the rebound was finished off by Manucho into the bottom corner after just 9 minutes. Rukavina for the visitors pounced on an error by Eliseu playing at left back, but shot wide on 20 minutes as Malaga struggled to get into the game. Gradually though Malaga found their passing rhythm, and a good move found Eliseu down the left who pulled the ball back for Isco to

fire home in the 37th minute. Cabellero had to make another good save just after half time but Malaga were now in control. Joaquin turns away after scoring the winner A great move ended in Joaquin's shot being amends, a Demichelis brilliantly blocked as header rebounded to Malaga looked for the Joaquin whose volley was winner. Sporting SPOTLIGHT CYCLING Lance Armstrong officially stripped of Tour titles Lance Armstrong has been stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life after the International Cycling Union ratified the United States Anti-Doping Agency's sanctions against the American. The decision effectively destroyed Armstrong's last hope of clearing his name after he was exposed as a drug cheat, triggering a wave of condemnation and legal threats. A Texas promotions company that paid out millions of dollars in bonuses to Armstrong said it wanted its money back while sunglasses maker Oakley announced it was ending its sponsorship of the disgraced cyclist.

CRICKET Andrew Strauss sure that Kevin Pietersen can thrive for England Former Test captain Andrew Strauss says Kevin Pietersen can make a successful return for England. Pietersen was dropped in August for sending "provocative" texts about Strauss to South Africa players. But the batsman, 32, has apologised and has been recalled for the tour to India – a decision that Strauss backs. "Kevin sounds like he's contrite and he realises he's made some mistakes and now is the time for everyone to look forward," Strauss told BBC Sport.
