ICKHAM’S
WORLD Friends
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
Last week I told you about James, the fact that he’d been injured and that really good friends of his were looking after him 24/7. Well, I spoke to them last Wednesday to ask how James was getting on and, although he is recovering he is apparently being a pain in the you-know-what as a patient. So, James, this is for you this week: Be nice, say thank you for what they are doing for you and don’t abuse friendship. You have found out how valuable friends are when you really need them and if you mess about too much, they may not be quite so forthcoming if you need them again and dinner time is not the time to be handing over your pee pot! Naughty!! On another note, we noticed that one of the airlines is thinking about charging for hand luggage now at €10 a pop. As we have to carry all manner of paraphernalia when we are travelling such as tickets, passports, money, credit cards and heaven knows what else, I think this is a bit of a cheek. Women carry handbags with everything in them so, airlines, get over yourselves or find you have even less passengers travelling with you than you did before. Oh, and by the way, the airline in question was NOT Easyjet or Ryanair and equally was NOT cheap. In fact they were piggin’ expensive. We’ve had monsoon weather up here over the last week. Hope everyone’s OK.

New York declared major disaster area In New York City, parts of Lower Manhattan were quickly flooded as the Hudson and East rivers overflowed. Seawater poured into road tunnels and the subway system. Images showed cars being swept along streets by the torrent. City transport director Joseph Lhota said early on Tuesday: "The New York City subway system is 108 years old, but it has never faced a disaster as devastating as what we experienced last night." The city's Consolidated Edison utility provider said an explosion at a substation, probably caused by flooding or flying debris, blacked out much of Lower Manhattan. The company said about 500,000 homes in Manhattan were without
power. As dawn broke, residents emerged to see the havoc wreaked by the storm.
In other developments: Fire destroyed about 50 homes in the New York City borough of Queens. More than 200 patients were evacuated from New York University's Tisch Hospital after power went out and a backup generator failed. America's oldest nuclear power plant, Oyster Creek in New Jersey, was put on alert due to rising water, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said. The New York Stock Exchange stayed shut on Tuesday – the first time it has closed for two
consecutive days due to weather since 1888. A crew member from a replica of HMS Bounty died after being rescued from the sea and the captain is missing after the ship sank in mountainous seas off North Carolina on Monday. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the storm surge was higher than the highest forecast, but he expected waters to start receding.
Philadelphia and Boston. Amtrak has suspended passenger train services across the north-east, while nearly 14,000 flights were cancelled, according to Flightaware.com.
In Washington DC, federal government offices are closed until Wednesday. Public transport was suspended in the US capital, New York, Baltimore,
An estimated 50 million people could be affected by the storm, with up to a million ordered to evacuate homes. The disaster estimating firm Eqecat has
forecast that Sandy could cause economic losses to the US of between $10 billion and $20 billion. At press time, Sandy, now downgraded from a hurricane but described as a "super-storm", was heading north to Canada. Over the past week Sandy has killed more than 80 people as it carved a path of destruction through the Caribbean.
Socialist bill to force Drop in road banks to grant relief accidents The Socialist Party has presented a bill in Parliament that would protect families from being evicted if they cannot make their mortgage payments. It puts forward new ways to help families meet their debt obligations while continuing to live in their own homes. One of its most important aspects would allow mortgage holders to
pay a “social rent” – a fee of not more than two percent of their annual mortgage repayments and no more than one-third of the family’s total income. The bill also proposes that banks which have received money from the Orderly Bank Restructuring Fund (FROB) “be made to accept a payment on the account or the relinquishment of the apartment in exchange for cancelling the mortgage

with the bank or savings bank.” The Socialists have also included a clause stating that families with incomes lower than €18,600 euros a year can choose to pay an agreed minimum amount that will go toward paying off the mortgage. According to the Socialists, there are some 400,000 people across Spain who are facing eviction procedures.
Traffic accidents in Fuengirola have dropped by 20 per cent over the past two years, according to councillor Rodrigo Romero. He said the Local Police were “very satisfied” with the reduction. This year so far, there have been 480 accidents – down from 714 in 2010 – which works out at an average of 48 per month. The number of people injured has dropped to 18 from 25 two years ago.

Sr Romero said the drop was the result of investment in technical and control measures as well as an increase in the number of policemen on traffic duty.

Bailout ‘not essential at the moment’ Speaking at a joint press conference in Madrid with visiting Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti on Monday, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that a “bailout is not essential at the moment” and he would decide on the matter when it is necessary and is good “for the general interest of Spaniards”. Monti also ruled out tapping the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) in order to trigger purchases of sovereign debt by the European Central Bank. “We don’t think Italy will have to set that mechanism in motion,” he said. It was the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders in three years, although they have
exchanged views on a number of occasions this year. In a joint statement, Rajoy and Monti called for mechanisms that would restore lending and allow economic growth in Europe to be set into motion. “We dealt with matters that don’t allow us to sleep in peace,” Monti said. The two leaders also called for plans for a European banking union to be implemented as soon as possible, and for the direct recapitalisation of banks to be in place by next year. Both Rajoy and Monti rejected the idea of setting up a European Commission body to oversee the budgets of the member countries of the

European Union – an idea proposed by ECB President Mario Draghi. In response to remarks by US President Barack Obama that Spain should not be allowed to go under, Rajoy said his government is carrying out reforms and implementing cutbacks to overcome the economic crisis.
Speaking in a telephone interview on Monday with the Spanish-language, Colombia-based W Radio network, Obama said helping Spain and the rest of Europe was in the United States’ best interests because it would also strengthen the US economy. “We cannot allow Spain to become unravelled,” Obama said.

PIP breast implant boss leaves custody The founder of the scandal-hit French breast implant company PiP was released from custody on Monday pending trial. Jean-claude Mas, 73, spent eight months in detention after his company's breast implants were revealed to be prone to rupturing. The French government unleashed a world-wide scare when it urged some 30,000 to have their implants removed earlier this year. PiP was shut down in 2010 after it was found to have been using industrial-grade silicone gel. Mr Mas has reportedly confessed to illegally obtaining the low-cost gel but denies that the PiP implants posed a threat to health. He will go on trial in April 2013 with other PiP officials in a case that will involve some 180 lawyers and 4,600 complainants.

New blow for Berlusconi The party of former Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi suffered a major blow on Monday, losing a regional election for governor in its former stronghold of Sicily to the centre-left candidate Renato Crocetta who told reporters: "It's the first time that a candidate for the left is elected as regional governor, it's the first time that an anti-mafia candidate wins. Today is more than an election result, it is a date with history.”
Mr Crocetta had campaigned against organised crime and lives under police protection after threats to his life. The result follows Mr Berlusconi's conviction last week for tax fraud, and his threat to withdraw support and topple PM Mario Monti's government. The vote has been seen as a test ahead of a general election due next year. Mr Berlusconi has ruled out leading his centre-right
People of Freedom (PDL) party into that election, but says he will remain in politics. Sicily has long been a bastion of support for Mr Berlusconi. In 2001 his party won all 61 seats there in the general election. This election was held early after the previous governor, Raffaele Lombardo, was forced to resign following allegations of mafia connections and a financial crisis which left the island close to bankruptcy.

UK News Lung Cancer on the increase Cancer Research UK has released the latest figures for causes of cancer deaths among women in the UK and for the first time, there are more deaths from lung cancer than from breast cancer.
becoming more common among women, a campaign is being launched next month to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease, and the need to diagnose it early.
In 2012 the figures show that 15,449 women died from lung cancer whereas 11,556 died from breast cancer, a reversal of statistics on past years which shows a possible decline in deaths from breast cancer in women in the UK and is expected to show a drop of about 30% by 2030 which is a fabulous achievement. However, deaths from lung cancer are on the increase from 18 deaths per 100,000 women in 1971 to 31 in the latest statistics, an increase of a whopping 72%, that accounts for around 21% of all cancer deaths in women, more than breast, ovarian and uterine cancers.
Liz Darlison, Macmillan consultant nurse specialist, from University Hospitals of Leicester, said: "While the statistics paint a frightening picture, there's a great deal that can be done to help ensure women are diagnosed earlier, treated earlier and live longer. By raising awareness of the tell-tale signs – for example, a persistent cough that lasts longer than three weeks – there's the potential to save thousands of lives every year."

Dr Mick Peake, consultant respiratory physician at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, said: "Although most women know that a lump in their breast could be a sign of
cancer, awareness of the symptoms of lung cancer remains comparatively low. No doubt linked to this is the fact that patients in the UK are diagnosed at a later stage in their disease and, as a result, has significantly worse lung cancer survival rates compared to other major European countries. More needs to be done to raise awareness of the increasing incidence of lung cancer in women and to encourage early diagnosis – catch it early and it can be cured." Paula Chadwick, chief executive of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation , added: "Once considered a man's disease, we need to get the message out that anyone can get lung cancer. Although it remains a devastating disease for many, if caught early, it can be treated more effectively." Lung Cancer Awareness Month starts tomorrow, November 1st.

Glitter questions FoRMER pop star Gary Glitter is the latest high profile personality to be linked to the police inquiry into BBC presenter and disc jockey Jimmy Savile. Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was arrested and taken to Charing Cross Police Station to help police with their investigation and he was released and bailed to return in December. Following Savile’s death at the age of 84 many victims have come forward and police now believe he could have been one of Britain’s biggest sex offenders. Chairman of the BBC Trust Lord Patten has said he is determined to find out the truth about the scandal that has engulfed the corporation and make any changes that may be necessary. UK
Fireworks boss finally appearing on manslaughter charges
BRITAIN’S Ministry of Defence is to provide an additional £350-million of funding for the design of a future generation of nuclear submarines, securing 1,200 jobs.
A Somerset fireworks company boss is to appear in court next week charged with manslaughter. It follows the fatal crash which killed seven people in poor visibility on the M5 Motorway in November
The new submarines will from 2028 replace the four Vanguard Class vessels that currently maintain the UK’s nuclear deterrent. They will be based at Faslane, already the largest employment site in Scotland.
last year. Avon and Somerset Police said the charges had resulted from the failings of the company, Firestorm Pyrotechnics, in the planning and operation of the fireworks display at
Taunton Rugby Club. The Crown Prosecution Service said there was insufficient evidence to charge the rugby club or any of the drivers involved in the pile-up.

Dog Whisperer upsets the normally mild mannered Titchmarsh Most people have heard, admittedly vaguely, of TV’s famed Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan. Some of you will have even watched his programmes as he trains a dog from a ferocious animal flying at people, teeth bared and after a while with him it almost seems that a miracle has happened. These once nasty creatures are turned into veritable pussy cats before our eyes. Millan charges some of the Hollywood elite £60,000 for his services. However, all is apparently not what it appears with Mr Millan, as pointed out by the normally meek mannered Alan Titchmarsh on ITV’s The Alan Titchmarsh Show last week, turning the once loved man into one of the most scorned in the UK. Not a good place to be for Millan who was due to start his tour of the UK from April next year. And the whole thing has sparked an internet frenzy criticising his now public methods. The normally genial
host turned on him, saying: ‘You punish dogs. You hit them. I’ve seen you punch a dog in the throat to get it to behave, and to most people, like myself, this is totally unacceptable as a way of training an animal. You also work with electric shocks and spikes on collars – and that’s pretty barbaric treatment.’ Millan told the Daily Mail: ‘I use many techniques to rehabilitate dogs. In extreme cases – by which I mean cases where I’m the last resort before a dog is put down – these tools may be helpful. But they are just one of many techniques. Cesar himself insists that calmness is the key to canine obedience. “When I approach an animal, I want to demonstrate that I’m calm,’ he says. ‘Then I ask myself what he needs. Both those considerations must come before any needs of the human. If you’re calm, the animal will pick up on that. I believe a calm dog is a happy, obedient dog that won’t get into trouble.
Governor’s design competitions His Excellency the Governor, Sir Adrian Johns, in association with the Department of Education, is pleased to announce two competitions for school pupils in Gibraltar. Year 3 pupils have the opportunity to design the Governor’s official 2012 Christmas Cards, on the theme “Christmas at the end of the Diamond Jubilee Year”.
We’ve got to become better at listening to what a dog is trying to tell us. I always start off by teaching the owner to relax before I start working with their dog. Otherwise, they’re influencing their dogs negatively. Don’t suspect a rottweiler or a pit bull before you’ve met it. And look at the owner. That will tell you all you need to know about the dog. Dogs don’t see themselves as breeds. When a beagle meets a pit bull, he’s not thinking: “Are you the one everyone talks about?” They see themselves as individual dogs.” Hmm…. Wonder what the dogs would say back to him – I wouldn’t whisper too close to them in future if I was you!

Meanwhile pupils in Years 12 and 13 are invited to design a “Gibraltar 2013” display garden for the Convent. Following the success of the London 2012 Olympics garden this year, the winning design will be reproduced by the Convent gardeners. Sir Adrian said “2012 has been an amazing year for Gibraltar, with the highly successful Diamond Jubilee celebrations and Royal Visit. As the year draws to a close I’m delighted to be able to continue the theme – and to look ahead to next year. These competitions offer a special opportunity for pupils to explore and nurture their artistic talents
as well as potentially to showcase their design in our local community.” The competitions are open to all schools in Gibraltar. All entries must be submitted through the Department of Education. The Convent is unable to accept any entries direct. All submissions will be judged by a panel including His Excellency the Governor.
Guidelines for the Christmas Card Competition The competition is to design His Excellency the Governor’s Christmas card for 2012. The competition is open to all Year 3 pupils and there are some basic guidelines which must be followed: The Christmas card must be in LANDSCAPE page orientation. There should be NO writing on the card. Designs must be done by hand, computer programmes should NOT be used to create the final picture. The theme for the competition is ‘Christmas
at the end of the Diamond Jubilee Year’. The deadline for submission is Friday 16th November. All submissions should be through your school.
Guidelines for the Garden Design Competition Last year the garden at the Convent incorporated a display garden to celebrate the London Olympics 2012. This competition is to design a display garden for 2013 and is open to all pupils in Years 12 and 13. There are some basic guidelines which must be followed: The design must be submitted on the template provided. Plants do not need to be specified. The theme for the competition is ‘Gibraltar 2013’. The deadline for submission is Friday 11th January. All submissions should be through your school.

Skaters protest Around 150 people gathered in the Plaza de la Noguera in Torremolinos on Saturday to protest against the local council’s decision to ban skates and skateboards from the public areas of the town, which comes into force on November 1st. After that date skaters will have to use the area set aside for them in the Villa Deportiva. Line skates can be used in the authorised areas of the bicycle track
along the Promenade or in the Parque de la Bateria. One of the organisers of the protest, Michael Hand, and the president of the National Skate Association, Alexis Fernandez, told reporters that the Town Hall should have listened to young people and skaters before deciding on the ban. They said skaters did not want to be banished to a closed-in area like the Villa Deportiva but wanted their own rink and their own
track along the Promenade, the area preferred by most skaters. They pointed out that the rink at the Villa Deportiva had been closed since February because of a fire and the Town Hall had decided not to reopen it because it was a favourite target of vandals. Fines for defying the ban range from €6,000 to €15,024 – the latter for skaters who disrupt pedestrian or vehicle traffic.
Foreigners to be fined In its campaign to get foreigners to register (known as the empadronamiento), Mijas Town Hall has so far discovered a number of cases of foreigners living in the town for more than seven years without registering, who face fines
your
of €150 under the Population Law in force. Some 14,000 people have not re-registered in the past five years and they will be excluded from the town’s official population figure next year. The Junta de Andalucia bases its financing for municipalities
on the number of people registered there, and the money is used for maintaining local services and infrastructure. Any cutback in the current economic crisis will make it particularly hard for local councils to make ends meet.

The 50,000 square metre park is divided into three different ambiances – the Subtropical Garden, the Mediterranean Garden and the Arab Garden. The latter is the smallest – 7,200 square metres – but its paths that lead to a central fountain and its fig, orange and pomegranate trees surrounded by an ochre-coloured wall reproduce the Arab ambiance to perfection. The Mediterranean garden is the largest – 50,000 square metres – and is full of trees and plants typical of the region while the more exotic non-native trees and shrubs such as the ficus and the jacaranda populate the Subtropical garden. More than 10,500 different species of trees,
Pharmacies help in new-born murder case The National Police have asked pharmacies in Malaga to report any purchases of drugs used for post-natal haemorrhages or other birth-related problems in their search for the mother of a new-born boy whose body was found in a garbage container in a disposal plant in the Los Ruices area of the city last Friday morning. The garbage was being unloaded into a compacting machine when a worker spotted the body. The police have no idea where the container came from – there are more than 8,000 garbage containers dotted around the city. An autopsy revealed that the child had been born alive and died as a result of several blows to its head.

Jailed for pulling mother’s nose a Malaga court has sentenced a man to four months in jail for pulling his mother’s nose in a Marbella shopping centre in april this year. The russian-born man’s lawyer said he had become angry with his mother when she refused to pay him a wage for the work he was doing on a farm belonging to her. The mother told the judge that she was afraid of her son because of his constant aggressive behaviour towards her. The judge also ordered the man, who lives with his mother, to keep a distance of 200 metres away from her for one year. Marbella
New public information panels The 15-year-old information panels that currently inform passers-by about the time and the temperature are to be replaced. Councillor josé eduardo Díaz said they were “technically deficient, hence the need to replace them with state-of-the-art panels that function better”. He said the panels provided an important public service for passers-by and drivers. Sr Diaz said their replacement is just one aspect of a drive to replace signals and remove billboards to improve the town’s appearance for both residents and tourists. MijaS

Reduced to tears
The use of force
K
P
ing Juan Carlos said during his three-day visit to India last week that from the outside, Spain looked pretty good, but from the inside “it makes you want to cry”. Right now, the King is looking at something he’s striven against ever since he ascended the throne – the break-up of Spain, with Catalonia bent on holding a referendum on independence, and the Basque Nationalist Party calling for “the Basque people’s right to decide their own future” without actually mentioning the dreaded “R” word. It remains to be seen what will happen in those two regions but meanwhile, there’s a lot of things going on in the rest of the country that bring tears to one’s eyes.
R
ight now, all the opposition parties are calling for the resignation of Education Minister José Ignacio Wert because of the reforms he intends to introduce in the country’s education systems – I use the plural because there are 17 systems in all, one for each region. Sr Wert wants to raise standards by bringing back the old-fashioned way of making students pass a certain number of subjects before they can move up to the next school year.
T
he Socialist government eliminated that little rule with the result that many kids leave school barely able to read or write. Sr Wert has also eliminated a course on civic rights introduced by the Socialist government that could only be likened to Marxist indoctrination. It reminded me of the law on “the people’s rights and duties” passed by Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez shortly after he came to power in 1999, which gave them more than 80 rights as opposed to five duties. Sr Wert also wants to leave it up to the schools to decide to teach religion, banned from public schools by the Socialists.
T
hen we have the general strike scheduled for November 14th which I’m afraid may produce more tears of laughter than pain. The last general strike called in late March did not get as many people to stay at home as the unions had expected and it looks as if the same will happen next time. Could it be that people are getting tired of having to give up their weekends to march around protesting about this, that and the other? It was fun to begin with but last weekend only 3,000 people answered the call to march – about what I can’t remember now. The unions need to learn that marching gets you
nowhere, whereas presenting reasonable solutions – and I stress the word reasonable – just might get them listened to.
I
’m not saying that people don’t have plenty of good reasons to protest but marching around waving banners and shouting slogans doesn’t exactly solve any of their problems. It won’t get them jobs or pay the mortgage or reduce university fees or stop the government making further cuts or anything else that affects ordinary mortals. The government is not going to resign en masse and Parliament will go about its usual business no matter how many protesters are fighting with the riot police outside.
F
or once, I actually have a few words of praise for the Socialist Party which has come up with proposals to help stop evictions, which would involve the banks becoming more reasonable and flexible about mortgage repayments. Evictions are currently a national disgrace – two people have attempted suicide in the past few days to avoid being evicted and at least one man died of a heart attack before the bailiffs could force him out of his home. It’s easy to say they shouldn’t have taken out the mortgages in the first place but the banks did everything possible to tempt them when the good times were rolling. And they did everything possible to beat a very hasty retreat once the bubble burst. So let them shoulder their share of the blame.
T
he Spanish people had to work very hard to keep their heads above water during the Franco years. But freedom is a heady brew and they went wild after he died. They let it all hang out – literally – and went for any fad in music, sex, fashion, etc., as long as it was way-out enough. The “rave” lasted 37 years – surely a world record – and now we’re having to look stark reality in the face. The papers and the telly are full of stories about how people are setting up little businesses – in a country where the ideal for many was a cushy job for life in the public sector, with lots of nice perks. The opposition accuses the government of turning back the clock to what they call the “pre-constitutional” era (Franco) but it could be that the people themselves are rediscovering the inventiveness and stoicism that helped them survive those hard times.
rime Minister Mariano Rajoy doesn't want to make any more waves than he has to when it comes to Catalonia. The ongoing proindependence rumblings by Artur Mas and his Catalan nationalist CiU bloc will put a real strain on voters who will be going to the polls in regional elections on November 25th. They are also adding to the tensions among many sectors including industry giants, such as CocaCola which reportedly has privately announced that it will move its operations from Barcelona to Madrid fearing a nationwide boycott on products manufactured in the region, according to some news reports.
A
few years back Spaniards boycotted the Freixenet-brand cava during the Christmas holidays after the autonomous Estatut was passed by the local parliament with the help of the Socialists in power. And now Viviane Reding, the justice affairs representative on the European Commission, has said in a private letter dated October 4th to Foreign Minister José Manuel Garcia-Margallo that Catalonia cannot unilaterally break away from Spain and expect that it will continue within the EU. If that does occur then the Catalan government would have to open negotiations with the EC, which will determine whether it can join as a new member. Publicly, of course, the EC commissioners are saying that the problems between Spain and Catalonia are a domestic matter, and they will not interfere.
B
ut there is another more dangerous and pressing matter, one that was once a matter of whispers but is now being discussed in open forums. The rightwing Francisco Franco Foundation in an editorial published on its website this week blatantly calls on the Rajoy government to use force if Mas and his CiU party continue to insist on independence, and to dissolve the regional parliament as provided by Articles 8 and 155 of the Constitution. First, Rajoy would have to give an ultimatum to Mas warning him that he cannot disrupt the Constitutional order of the nation.
A
similar event occurred in October 1934 when Alejandro Lerroux, head of the Second Republic government, which was presided by Niceto Alcalá-Zamora, sent in troops to Catalonia when the “delinquent” head –
as the FF Foundation calls him – of the Generalitat Lluis Companys declared independence. Companys was removed and General Batet was sent in to put down the uprising. The FF Foundation suggests that Mas should also be arrested and put on trial should he continue his pro-independence push.
I
t seems inconceivable that Rajoy would use force, but he has said in the past he would do all in his power to preserve the Constitutional order of Spain. Then, adding to ongoing tensions, our naughty education minister, José Ignacio Wert, declared in Congress earlier this month that he plans on “Hispanizing” all Catalan students to ensure that they are fluent in Spanish. A few days later he received a real dressing down from King Juan Carlos who told him his statements were inappropriate. Comments like these don’t help ease the tensions at hand, no doubt. But the unflappable Wert said that he was proud of what he had said and would repeat it again if he had to. No doubt he was proud. The minister is well know among inner circles for his biting jabs, and arrogance when it comes to his belief that he is intellectually more advanced than the rest of us. Again the prime minister doesn't needed anyone like this on his team. But then there are people who believe that Wert just might be on the right track.
T
roops or no troops, the Catalonia political situation is only going to get worse before it gets better. There is a good majority of people who live in the region who don’t believe in independence and say they will do all they can to remain part of Spain. As we approach the regional elections – less than a month away – the real race will be between the separatists and traditionalists, which could only lead to squabbles and pockets of violence at the ballot boxes.
M
as and his CiU are slated to win re-election, according to the polls – a victory he hopes will give him carte blanche to call a referendum next year with or without Madrid’s blessing. This sticky mess is going to have to be carefully played out; someone stands to lose in this political standoff and it is doubtful that Mas will come out the victor.

What a fabulous night out was had by all! A masked Ball was held recently at The Tamisa Golf Hotel, Mijas Costa in aid of the animal charity CHAIN. Over 100 people attended and what a sight it was to behold. Almost without exception the ladies were in their finery with ball gowns and long dresses floating around all evening, and the men in their dinner suits and dickie bow ties. This kind of evening takes an awful lot of arranging and thanks must go to Jo (in the main picture on the right in pink in her mask that came all the way from Venice) and Derek Rawnsley whose efforts managed to raise a whopping €1000 for the charity on the night! As Denise Walker from CHAIN said, this may sound like not a lot of money to some people but to the animals it’s worth millions. Entertainment at the tables was provided by a young man and his violin. He was just 21 years old
and a missionary. His playing was sublime! The dancing was started by resident artiste Polly Perkins (pictured middle right). Everyone who attended said they had a wonderful evening wining, dining and dancing, so it is now hoped that this will become an annual event. John Peach (pictured bottom right) and his staff at The Tamisa did well to serve all the guests with their usual efficiency and smiles. So, watch The News for more details of future events and, for now, I will leave you with some photographs of the revellers on the night.

Readers’ Offer - information part 1 e Christmas & New Year River Cruise 2012 First of all – just to inspire you a little – here is a short description of some of the sights you will encounter during the cruise. Discover the charm and elegance of the beautiful countryside alongside the Rhine. The winter light has always inspired Dutch and Belgian artists alike, pleased by the many canals, channels and bridges. The cities and their museums and tourist sites are not crowded and there is a lot of peace and quiet in the many beautiful towns you will encounter on this cruise. Onboard the MS Amelia you will follow the course of the Rhine and head for the Kingdom of the Netherlands and during your trip to Amsterdam, you will be driven through the Dutch countryside with its windmills, dykes and meadows. And see the cosiest city in Flanders on the Scheldt, Antwerp. Real box seats for the fireworks on the sun deck of your ship, this memorable cruise culminates in a New Year’s Eve party on board, where you will finally leave the ship in Cologne. So here is an overview of
this festive cruise which starts on 21st December and finishes on 1st January 2013.
Your Excursions & Daily Programme Here is some detailed information about the programme and some of the excursions you will be going on during the cruise. Day 1. December 21st You will fly from Malaga arriving at your hotel in Cologne. Take the time to unpack and settle in. Day 2. December 22nd After breakfast in the hotel, you will be transferred to the ship. Once you have settled into your cabin, freshen up and then join the Captain in the lounge for a welcome drink. Day 3. December 23rd Your arrival in the wonderful city of Amsterdam will be after breakfast at around 10am ready to start a walking tour of the city at 10.30. An experienced local guide will take you around this famous and charming city. You will see the celebrated canals and bridges, the narrow streets
with their wonky houses and the guide will point out some of the famous monuments and buildings. For lunch you will go to Heffer situated in one of the most important monuments in Amsterdam in the oldest part of the city centre, in the midst of historical buildings and a lively neighbourhood. Its original style and feel has been lovingly restored and you can find many architectural styles like Jugendstill and Art Deco. Dinner will be on board the ship. After dinner there is a tour through 'Dark' Amsterdam which can be rather illuminating, as it centres on the famous Red Light District. The excursion starts at a prostitute information centre, where you will have a drink and can ask any questions you may have. The visit to the 'Wallen'' (the Red Light District) is perhaps the most interesting part of the tour. You will see for yourself the oldest profession in the world. The tour continues past interesting monuments and through old streets, one of which is the well-known 'Zeedijk', once one of the most dangerous streets in Amsterdam – where
seamen could be found looking for local amusement. Nowadays this is a safe area, full of lively Dutch pubs and restaurants and the shady bars of yesteryear are long gone. Safety during this excursion is not a concern, as a reliable guide will accompany you throughout. Day 4. December 24 Take the tour to Zaanse Schans and Edam. This tour shows the typical Dutch countryside of polders and little canals on the way to the Zaanse Schans, a well known and fascinating windmill village. You will be visiting a wooden shoemaker there. Then we move on to the world famous fishing villages of Volendam and
Marken on the borders of the former Zuiderzee (now called Ijsselmeer) with its wooden houses and locals wearing their colourful style of dress. We will also stop at one of the very few cheese farms, where the cheese is still made the traditional way. After dinner, enjoy a charming evening cruise through the illuminated canals of Amsterdam, which will provide you with a lasting memory of this beautiful city. Known as the 'Venice of the North', you will glide past the Old Harbour and the Maritime Museum then on through the old centre of the city, seeing elegant merchants' mansions, carilloncrowned churches and warehouses dating back to the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries. You will see historic residential buildings, the famous Anne Frank's House, and on past the renowned boat houses, with the chance for all romantics to pass beneath the 'skinny bridge'. SAINTS AND SINNERS AT Well respected, honest agents THE BRITISH SOCIETY A few saints and many more sinners gathered at The British Society’s Villa Luisa for an evening of fun and laughter at the Saints and Sinners Dinner Dance. Saints dressed in white with halos in evidence or representing the local clergy with the required dog collar and dark suit were joined by a variety of sinners dressed in black and red with horns adding to the overall effect. Members and guests met in the bar for a relaxing drink before moving down to the function room which had been suitably decorated with red, white and black to set the scene for the evening. The President, John Simpson, welcomed everyone, introduced the guests and announced forthcoming events to be held at Villa Luisa. Dinner was served with choices of melon and feta cheese salad, bacon and cream stuffed mushrooms, or chicken satay followed by choices of smoked haddock, chicken chasseur, pork or lamb chops, or veggie goulash.
Tempting desserts included mango cheesecake, bread and butter pudding with custard, fresh fruit salad or cheese & biscuits. Alex Avery provided the music and started off the evening with a few upbeat numbers to draw the dancers on to the floor before slowing down the pace a little to allow the dancers to recover. After changing from her very saintly white attire to the black dress of a sinner she once again upped the tempo and kept everyone on the dance floor until midnight.
The next event at the British Society will be the monthly quiz followed by the Armistice Day Lunch. The Christmas Fair will take place on Sunday 25th November and the next dinner dance will be in celebration of Saint Andrew’s Day and will be held on Friday 30th November. You can find out more about the British Society and the events planned for Christmas by consulting their website at www.britishsocietyspain. com or telephone 952 590 795.

Costalets is a well-known and respected Real Estate name on the Costa del Sol. It has been trading on the coast for many years and is run by Steve Parker assisted by Aurelie Di Lella. Between them they have years of experience both in Spain and overseas, selling and renting properties for a multitude of clients. Based in the Minerva building on Avda Gamonal in Arroyo de la Miel, Steve and Aurelie can help you buy or rent any type of property from a holiday studio to a large residential villa. So, if you are thinking of purchasing or renting anything from Torremolinos to Calahonda you should contact them for friendly, honest advice. They specialise in investment properties and can help locate the right property, get all the legal advice, a mortgage if required, transfer all utility company details and assist with any translation matter en route. Once the property is yours they can market it, rent it, maintain it, in fact, they can do just about

anything necessary to ensure the maximum return from your investment. After many years on the coast they know the property market and the pitfalls that can spoil people’s dreams, however they also know that for many, many people, their property in Spain has proven to be a great buy and an important lifestyle investment. They believe in creating a long-term partnership and if it is an investment purchase you are looking for, will not sell you anything that they cannot rent for you, If it is a residential property you seek, your requirements may be very different, but they will still work hard to ensure you are buying the best available property for your needs. Their current best investment buys are a one bed apartment in a busy location close to restaurants and shops which should bring in about 10% rental return per annum. Also a two bed, two bath apartment close to golf at just 69,000 euros!
If you are looking for a larger residential villa they have one with amazing views over Fuengirola and to the sea, reduced to just 950,000 euros, this property was previously listed by another agent for 1.2 million! But Costalets do not just list properties, they sell them! If you have a property for sale or rent contact them now as they have clients waiting for the right property. Costalets are proud to say they are "big enough to be professional, small enough to care". www.costalet.com – 952 563 939.
DAVID THE DOGMAN Linda This is Linda. She is a lovely girl born March 2011. She is quite a large dog and was found in the campo with her siblings, another unwanted and abandoned animal. She is a beautiful, gentle and loving, has no problems with other dogs, and is just looking for a good home with a family of her own. She would make someone a wonderful and faithful companion. We have many small, medium and large dogs all in need of good homes, Linda is only one of many. FAMA’S policy is never to have a healthy dog put down; they have a home with us for as long as they need one, or until they are adopted. If you would like to meet Linda or get more information, contact Pat on 620 354 885 or visit the new FAMA website at www.famaspain.com
Teach Your Dog To Eliminate On Command Teach him to poo when you want him to! Part 4
Step four. Limit his time. Allow your puppy not more than five minutes to do his business. The entire point of this training is to teach him to go quickly when you tell him to. Standing around for long periods of time teaches him that you have nothing better to do than wait for him. If, after five minutes, he has not eliminated, simply put him in his crate. Leave him there for fifteen minutes. Then try him again. Step five. Reward success. Reward is the key to all
successful dog training. When your puppy goes within the allotted five minute time span, immediately praise him. Reward him with something that he wants. This last is the tricky part. The reward must be something that he wants, not just something you think he wants. For many puppies, being taken off the leash is sufficient reward. House dogs, that are inside all day, might consider a long walk adequate reward. For some it might be a tasty food treat. For others, a chance to chase a ball. More next week...

AN APPEAL DEFEND THE NEEDY
Tribute show season continues at Macarena Continuing the wonderful Tribute Season being hosted at Macarena restaurant, Chris King promotions offers “Whitney Houston” tomorrow night, Thursday November 1st. As well as an astonishing tribute to the great star, with uncanny similarities, CJ will also be performing a lively Motown show in her second spot of the evening.
Every October Lux Mundi Torre del Mar and Fuengirola branches, collect non-perishable food from the many friends and visitors to the two centres. This food is then distributed in November to many local charities who identify those people and their families most in need. The following are the charities that benefit from the generosity of the friends. Caritas and its associate charities all help the needy and their families and works from every parish church. Volunteers and social workers individually assess thousands of people who come to them and help is given according to their needs. Budgets are made to support the distribution of food, clothes, medical treatment, and payment of bills, with the objective of allowing people to lead a normal life. Proyecto Hombre is a charitable foundation, which was established in Málaga in 1985 and whose main activity consists in maintaining a therapeutic rehabilitation programme for addicts. The Málaga Cottolengo is an open door for the needy. The aim is "to welcome all those who are not helped anywhere else”. This past June, the 'Awards Edition XIV South', awarded a prize to the charity founded by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, colloquially known as 'Cottolengo '. The Little Sisters of the Poor run a home for poor and elderly people in Málaga, which is located in

front of the train station. It is a home for people who have very few resources or none at all and accommodates nearly 100 elderly people. The Sisters provide everything for them, especially care and love. The Spanish Evangelical Church support a few apartments which are refuges for abused women and Lux Mundi contribute food they have collected. There are many other charitable organisations in Málaga which go well beyond this, by helping the needy with palliative care, clothing and improved social placement.

Mad Terry on Johnny Westwood
Johnny says: “I have worked in show business as a professional actor and singer since the late 1980s having trained in London at The Actors Institute and also in Rep. Touring as an actor in children’s shows through to Shakespeare was hard work but was the best grounding for any performer. After a successful tour of “Macbeth” I moved to London and in the early 1990s was cast in a minor rôle in The Chief with Martin Shaw for Anglia Television which was to be the first of many TV programmes. Others included Casualty, Over Here, No Bananas, Without
Motive and Plastic Man – I have been lucky enough to have worked on most sides of this profession. I spent ten years in musical theatre and was fortunate to sing with the wonderful Petula Clark. I have also worked with Madonna, made films with Penelope Cruz and Ray Winston, worked as a voice-over artiste, been a voice double for Kenneth Williams, done pantomime for many years, and have toured many times playing in most of the number one theatres up and down the UK. The last West End show I was in, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, won an Olivier Award for the best new production so I am very proud to have that on my CV. In 2005, I travelled with my one-man comedy show around Europe and it brought me to Spain. I fell in love with the country

and decided to move here. Since then I have had many great things happen. I have had a documentary made on my life with Nick Berry to be shown on British television, I have had a record “Johnny Remember Me (Dance Mix) released on an album called “Forever Country”. I now concentrate on my new show “A Tribute To The Legends Of Country” which I perform all over Europe and, of course in Spain’s hotels, timeshares, bars, festivals and other venues. I have made many television appearances over the last seven years singing live on programmes across Europe

Forty vibrant abstract works by Matthew Vabrino, Kyron Dyer, Keyvain Tornay, John Charles Yeo, Stephen Paggio, Glen Wimbleton and Graeme Brooking are being publicly exhibited for the first time from now until November 12th in Gibraltar. Over the past year, art teachers, Michele Stagnetto and Merche Imossi, have organised weekly creative painting sessions for students with special needs at the Arts and Crafts Workshop in Casemates. Also assisting is Merche’s daughter Anna as part of her work experience from West Side School. She finds the work rewarding as she sees the creativity generated and the enjoyment of the students. Although other students have participated in some sessions, the seven named
above have have attended regularly with dedication and enthusiasm. Different interests are apparent in the paintings; an inclination to texture and tactile manipulation of the paint in some; an exciting and sensitive use of colour in others. Common to all the paintings is a freshness and an unpretentious approach. The teachers say that much consideration goes into the paintings, as well as instinctive responses to colour, forms and texture. This reflects the openminded attitudes and creative approach of Michele and Merche, who obviously love their work with this group and offer their highly skilled abilities on a voluntary basis. They have done fantastic work coaxing the best from their students.

Calendar Girls come to e Salon Varietes Following hot on the tails of Long John Silver, Peter Brooks will be directing the wonderful “Calendar Girls” by Tim Firth, based on the 2003 motion picture which starred an ensemble cast headed by Helen Mirren (pictured right) and Julie Walters. Annie's husband John dies from leukaemia at an early age. Her close friend Chris, anxious to purchase a comfortable sofa for the visitors’ lounge in the hospital where he was treated, hits upon the idea of printing a calendar featuring some of the members of the Knapely chapter of the Women's Institute discreetly posing nude while engaged in everyday activities. Her proposal initially is met
with great skepticism, but she eventually convinces ten women to participate in the project with her. The calendar’s overwhelming success goes global causing their lives to be turned upside down and their relationships to be tested, in this very amusing and touching story. After four days of auditions, the Salon Varietes cast are now deep into rehearsal and already great fun is being had by all. The cast includes four new faces, Julie Williams, Chris Barry, Linda Pritchard and John Jones and of course some of the Salon regulars. It has been said of
“Calendar Girls” that it is “dazzlingly funny, shamelessly sentimental and an utterly captivating night at the theatre”. We’re sure you will all agree. The “girls” have posed for the calendar and sponsorship money raised will be given to Cudeca. Also, from ticket sales a donation will be made to the Leukaemia Research Fund. “Calendar Girls” has been playing to packed houses throughout the U.K. for five years and

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 2 Directed by Bill Condon Starring: KristenStewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner Here we are – the end of a saga that has gripped the imaginations of cinema goers around the world, created a fan base to rival Harry Potter's and generated an overwhelming enthusiasm for its stars. The love story that swirled around vampire Edward Cullen (Pattinson) and human Bella (Stewart) was mirrored by the real life true love romance between the two leading stars – a romance that came crashing down around their ears in a very public way.
So what of Edward and Bella on the silver screen – here in the fifth and final instalment they are newly married with a baby, Renesmee, and Bella is now a vampire. She is enjoying her new life and her new abilities and has settled into the Cullen clan. But the happy-ever-after ending is not going to be enough if the series is to conclude in epic style. Renesmee is wrongly identified as an immortal child – a human who has been transformed by the bite of the vampire.
Apparently this is a no-no in the world of vampires and the scene is set for a life or death struggle. Not the movie for a newcomer to the series – you need to be an ardent fan clued up on the clans,
and the battle between werewolf and vampire. But there are enough of those around the world to guarantee that this will be a monster hit at the box office – if it's your cup of tea it will undoubtedly tick all the boxes.

New knowledge is likely to spring up and clear your questions and concerns regarding something that just seemed too good to be true. Any illusions will probably shatter as the truth and reality hits you. A truth that you were not expecting is still better than living behind a veil. Once you look at this square in the face you will see it for what it is and these roots will allow you to be more productive and show you a more lucrative way forward. An emotional week for you when you are likely to be more volatile than usual. You will feel provoked on more than one occasion and your hackles will rise in response. You just don’t like being told what to do or ordered about in any way, and you may be asked to partake in situations that you do not feel comfortable with. It all comes down to trust, who you feel you can and who you feel has let you down or potentially could. Career and earnings feature high on your agenda. You could feel pulled in various directions in part due to what is grabbing your attention. A relationship will ignite your desires but also has the ability to fuel your anger; a certain thought or feeling can become larger than life and get out of hand within your mind. Let go of any unwanted thoughts that are bringing you down and focus on how you really feel, the answer you seek should become clear and by the weekend you will feel more on track. There is a focus within you as to where you need to fix and commit to something that you had possibly been in denial about. You are now painfully aware of where you have been in the dark and a truth is now revealed taking you to another crossroads. The middle path is there for the taking if you want it but at the end of the day it all comes down to you, how much do you value it? Do you desire extremes more than consistency? Be strong and courageous and take those practical steps to ensure you succeed. Something in your life may be feeling like it is snowballing, when you feel as if you are losing control of a situation and there is little that luck can do to rescue you. By putting some simple procedures in place you will find the solution to minimizing an unsettling momentum. The rewards for the steps taken will be felt immediately. Trust your intuition right now and follow it fearlessly as you are right on the mark. Emotionally you could be up and down due to outside influences that are making you feel vulnerable. Get plenty of rest and recuperation and look after your energy levels. You will feel driven with motivation and dedicated determination to change something or to alter a habit or pattern of relating that is no longer doing you any good.

• 1 tbsp olive oil • Onion , finely chopped • 1 garlic clove , crushed • 650g frozen petits pois • 750ml vegetable stock • 6 rashers streaky bacon • 1 tbsp butter , optional Directions Prep 20 mins Cook 12 mins Ready in 35 minutes 1. Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the onion and gently cook over a medium heat for 5-6 mins until softened but not coloured. Add the garlic and cook for a further minute. Season to taste, then stir in the butter, if using. Break the bacon into pieces and scatter over bowls or mugs of soup. The soup can be made up to a day ahead; just grill the bacon on the day. Powerful discussions are occurring now that will dictate how a certain situation will unfold. You will be able to discuss anything and everything that is necessary to get to the bottom of something for good. You are shaking loose some shackles that you don’t need to be carrying.

Life may be feeling unpredictable and tough but know that we are not meant to go it alone, no man is an island, and even you need to ask for help or advice sometimes. Give others the opportunity to give back to you this week. Do not let your independent streak hold you back, team work can work wonders in moments like these. There is a part of you that is dying to be expressed so speak up and reach out you could be surprised at who answers the call.
Being a mirror of other’s emotions you can sometimes find it difficult to know whether the way you are feeling is you or you are picking up on those around you. Everything can get foggy and this can create a confusing inner reality. This week Mars is giving you a helping hand to differentiate between the two, giving you more clarity and inner space than usual. The storm clouds are being blown away, use this time to prepare for the skies to clear, all things change.

Cheap colour test picks up Women who give up smoking by the age HIV
Quit early, live longer
of 30 will almost completely avoid the risks of dying early from tobacco-related diseases, according to a UK study.
UK researchers have developed a cheap test which could detect even low levels of viruses and some cancers. Its designers at the Imperial College London say it could lead to more widespread testing for HIV and other diseases in parts of the world where other methods are unaffordable.
Researchers reviewed data on more than a million women and found that lifelong smokers died a decade earlier than those who never started, those who stopped by 30 lost, on average, a month of life and if they stopped by 40 they died a year younger.
was "time" spent smoking, rather than amount: "If you smoke 10 cigarettes a day for 40 years it's a lot more dangerous than smoking 20 cigarettes a day for 20 years." They added that it was hard to measure the risk of "social smoking" a few times a week.
The test can be configured to a unique signature of a disease or virus — such as a protein found on the surface of the HIV. If that marker is present it changes the course of a chemical
reaction and the final result is blue if the marker is there, red if the marker is not. The researchers said this allows the results to be detected with "the naked eye". Early testing showed the presence of markers of HIV and prostate cancer could be detected but the researchers said trials on a much larger scale will be needed before it could be used clinically. They expect their test will cost 10 times less than current ones, which could pave the way for more widespread use of HIV testing in poorer parts of the world.

As women started smoking on a large scale much later than men, the impact of a lifetime of cigarettes has only just been analysed for women. The researchers said: "What we've shown is that if women smoke like men, they die like men." They said the crucial risk factor
The British Lung Foundation said the prospects for long-term health were much better if people stopped smoking before they were 30, but cautioned that this was not a licence to smoke "as much as you want in your 20s". A spokesman added: “The best thing for your health is to avoid smoking at all."

Star tells everyone “I’ll fight this forever... it can get stuffed!”
Devastating news for brave Bernie Nolan … and the group’s tour in early 2013 has been postponed while she gets treatment The “You make me feel like dancing” lead singer and actress Bernie Nolan, 52, of the eighties pop group The Nolans has revealed that the breast cancer she fought two years ago has returned and that she has been told by her doctors that it is incurable but treatable and containable. However, the feisty Irishwoman has said: "I refuse to sit around like I've got a death sentence. I'll fight this forever – it can get
stuffed." She said that when she was told the cancer had returned she did not cry, she was too shocked and she felt very angry. She added: "I'm on medication which is controlling it, and people have lived for 12 years on these drugs. Who knows what new treatments are around the corner?" After beating the disease in 2010 the mother of 13-year-old Erin found a lump on the same
side of her chest that she had a mastectomy on two years ago. A biopsy was carried out and a week later she learned the bad news that the cancer has spread to her brain, lungs, liver and bones. Her surgeon told her and her husband, Steve Doneathy, it was likely they would need to remove the lump, and a course of radiotherapy would follow. Her sisters Anne and Linda have also suffered breast cancer
and each has beaten the disease. A planned tour by The Nolans, due to start early in 2013, has now been postponed. Good luck with the treatment Bernie, and let’s hope you beat it for good this time.
Dull, dull, dull e Pride of Britain The shops are full of autumn’s clothing and the colours, if you can call them that, seem to be from the palette of dirge. While greys and browns can be great, mixing them with similar hues just makes everyone look bored and miserable so, what can we do to cheer things up? Well, for a start, here in Spain there are pashminas in all the fabulous colours of the rainbow so, try a red pashmina or scarf with a brown dress or trousers and a T-shirt. The greys go really well with a nice pink or purple to lift it and, of course, black will be lifted by pretty much any colour you want to throw at it. Another good way of livening up your look is to team trousers or skirts with different vibrant coloured tops. Again, brown, black or
grey trousers can be lifted with multi coloured Tshirts, jumpers, shirts or blouses. Even a cream or caramel-coloured top will look great when teamed with brown or black bottoms and let’s not forget, by teaming different separates with the same bottom half, you get an entirely different outfit every time so it’s a cheap option too! Another way of livening things up is to wear dress jewellery. A double string of pearls can make a simple brown dress look stunning and paste diamonds (fake) look brilliant on black or scarlet. So, there’s no need to look dull this autumn and winter – gloomy colours can becoming stunning if teamed with the right thing.
Sir Bruce Forsyth insisted everyday heroes were the real stars at the Pride of Britain Awards 2012. The sentiment was echoed by David Beckham who said he was proud to be involved each year and he especially focused on the small children who won awards, describing them as “amazing”. Among the winners – all nominated by the public – was Alice Pyne, 16, from Cumbria who received the
Teenager of Courage award on Monday evening. Alice was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma when she was 12 but has since become a powerful campaigner through her blog. The teenager finally completed her "bucket list" earlier this year and as a result of one of her wishes has convinced 40,000 people in the UK to sign up to be bone marrow donors. She has also set up a charity
called Alice's Escapes which provides holidays to the Lake District for families with seriously ill children. Another Teenager of Courage award went to Jack Carroll, 14, from Yorkshire. Jack, who has cerebral palsy and needs a wheelchair to get around, uses stand-up comedy to laugh in the face of his chronic condition and inspire other disabled children.

Live F1:
Documentary about 43-year-old Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner's parachute jump last month, when he became the first person to freefall through the sound barrier after leaping from a record-breaking height of 24 miles. The film follows Felix as he trains under the supervision of 82-year-old Joe Kittinger, the man who set the altitude record when he fell 19 miles to Earth in 1960, and shows how the mission came close to being aborted in the final stages of the ascent.

Jo Taylor The Coin Council have recently seen fit to remove Ana Belen Guzman from her position at the Tourist Information Office situated in the Casa de Cultura. Belen has endeared herself to the English-speaking residents of Coin through her friendly, helpful and enthusiastic promotion of Coin and her readiness to assist with advice on many issues. She will be sadly missed by residents and tourists alike. It has been so important and helpful to have an English-speaking person in this position.
David Harpin Remembrancetide is with us once again. It is that special time when the “Legion” concentrates all its efforts to raise as much money as possible through the Poppy Appeal in order to assist our beneficiaries. Last year’s Poppy Appeal, with your help — along with that of millions of other likeminded people — raised £40,088,972.78 worldwide (as at 25-10-2012). This magnificent figure helps us to help many individuals and families of Service personnel whether they are presently serving, or have served our country in the past. Armed Forces families are at the heart of our welfare. We help not only those who serve, but the mothers, fathers, partners and children of our serving personnel both past and present, helping every age group and generation
Coin I know I am not alone in wanting to record my dismay at her dismissal. I am unsure if the current economic crisis is behind this move or if it is politically motivated, but it leaves English speaking residents of Coin, and tourists to our town with a gap that will be hard to fill. Those of us who have been on one of Belen’s historic walks around the town know there could be no better ambassador for Coin. Her encyclopaedic knowledge of the history of Coin and her enthusiasm for the town is
truly impressive — demonstrated in the way she has always taken every opportunity to promote the activities organised within the community. Now that we no longer have Belen with her readiness to interact with and support the English-speaking residents of Coin, many of us feel that we have lost a true friend and champion. I hope the Council will reconsider this dismissal and realise that Belen is an asset this town cannot really do without.
RBL Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator providing them with lifelong care, today, and for the rest of their lives. During the past year the Poppy Appeal made it possible to help Armed Forces families with £1.7 million every week in direct welfare support, answering more than 165,000 calls for help. The Legion has also committed £50 million over ten years to support the MoD’s programme of recovery for wounded, injured and sick Armed Forces personnel in partnership with Help for Heroes. This year in order to continue these endeavours we will need to raise even more. We
have set ourselves a target of £42 million worldwide to help us achieve this. With your continuing help, and that of all the Branch Poppy Appeal Organisers, and their enthusiastic helpers locally, I hope to beat last year’s marvellous figure for Spain South of; €88,765.34. (The money raised in Spain stays here in Spain for our beneficiaries.) I thank all who donated their time, efforts and monies here in Spain South, and wish you well. Once again this year there will be a Garden of Remembrance in the English Cemetery at St. Georges Chapel, Malaga.

e Astronomy of Halloween While you’re out tonight dressed as a Zombie or a Vampire scaring the neighbours half to death, think on this, Halloween has its roots based in astronomy!
T
he reason that we have seasons is because the Earth is not standing straight up, instead it is tilted over by about 23 ½ º. During our summer months the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun whilst the Southern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun and so it is winter down there. During our winter months the opposite is true and the Northern Hemisphere then tilts away from the Sun.
M
any of the annual festivals that we celebrate now were originally connected with the seasons and the movement of the Sun across the sky. Christmas was originally a pagan festival connected to the Winter Solstice or shortest day of the year. It was only adopted as the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ around the 3rd century AD and even then many cultures preferred 6th January which happens to be the date on which the Earth is at its closest point to the Sun known as perihelion.
V
irtually all cultures around the world associated festivities to the Sun’s movement for many thousands of years before Christianity came along. Stonehenge in England was constructed to celebrate the Summer Solstice or the longest day of the year that usually occurs on June 21st or 22nd. This is the day that the Northern Hemisphere is at its most extreme point tilted toward the Sun. On this day at Stonehenge the Sun can be seen to rise over an extra large stone, known as the Heel Stone, placed outside of the famous stone circle.
H
alf way between the Summer Solstice and the Winter Solstice we have the Autumn and Spring Equinoxes. These usually occur on September 21st and March 21st and mark the point when there will be equal 12 hours of day time and 12 hours of night time. The Spring Equinox is so important that Easter is calculated from this date. Easter falls on the first Sunday that follows the first full moon occurring after the Spring Equinox. So if the Spring Equinox fell on Friday March 21st and then there was a full moon on Saturday March 22nd then Easter would be the next day Sunday March 23rd. The latest date that Easter can fall is on April 25th. In 2008 Easter did fall on March 23rd and you may remember 2011 when it fell on 24th April.
T
raditionally the Autumn Equinox was known as the festival of Mabon, a time to count one’s blessings for a bountiful harvest and prepare for the onset of winter. Although this festival has been largely forgotten today, we still hold harvest festivals in schools.
B
etween the four main festival days there are what are known as crossquarter days that stem back to the days of the Celts who celebrated the equinoxes and solstices. Anything for a party and the Celts did like to party, so they celebrated the cross-quarter days as well. Today we commemorate crossquarter days with the holidays Groundhog Day, May Day, and Lammas Day—a lesser well-known harvest holiday celebrated on August 1st— and Halloween. The actual fourth cross-quarter day ranges from November 5th-8th, but for simplicity's sake Halloween has been fixed on our calendars as October 31st.
T
he title of Halloween is a contraction of the original title of All Hallows evening and simply refers to the day before All Saints Day that falls on November 1st. On this day many cultures — including the Spanish — will visit the graves of departed relatives.
T
he scary bit about Halloween appears to have originated in Ireland where a festival of the dead or Samhain was celebrated on October 31st. Harmful fairies were thought to emerge on this night so Jack-o-lanterns were carved from turnips or pumpkins to ward off evil spirits. Keeping in the spirit of things, the image below is of the Witch Head Nebula in the constellation of Orion.
S
o when the kids are hammering on your door tonight for trick or treat you can thank our pagan ancestors for celebrating the Earth’s journey around the Sun.
I
cannot update my website at the moment as I am transferring my Internet provider. Hopefully it will be back up to date in the near future. Enjoy your stargazing!

Ford blasted after 1500 jobs are axed
Ford has been accused of 'betraying its workforce and customers' as it confirmed it will close its Transit van factory and another UK site with the loss of up to 1,500 jobs. It marks the end of more than 100 years of vehicle building by Ford in the UK – though engine production will continue. Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said:”Only a few months ago Ford was promising staff a new transit model for Southampton in 2014. The planned closures will really hurt the local economies and the supply chain will be badly hit.”
Lorenzo the champion
Another lights-to-flag victory for Sebastian Vettel in the 2012 F1 Grand Prix of India, and another step closer to his dream of holding on to the F1 world championship in 2012. Mark Webber was denied the opportunity to make it a second consecutive Red Bull 1-2, after Fernando Alonso managed a standout performance to battle his way up from fifth on the grid to take second place ahead of Webber, who suffered late-race KERS issues that put him off his stride for a crucial period. Fernando Alonso has said he had to drive at '120 per cent' for every lap of the Indian Grand Prix in order to net the runners-up spot. The result minimises the damage to his championship challenge, although he still loses ground, with the deficit to Vettel increasing from 6 points to 13 with just three races to go. Despite coming home in fourth and fifth places, it had been a frustratingly average day for the McLaren drivers. For them, the pattern for the afternoon was set within seconds of the start as they
were involved in the most thrilling battle of the day on track only for them both to get eclipsed by Alonso moments later. Lewis Hamilton lost out to a flying start from his team mate Jenson Button, and the two McLarens exited turn 3 onto the long straight side-by-side with the position still in dispute. Then Fernando Alonso got a huge run on both of them, benefiting from drafting in the slipstream of the two McLarens and by a perfect seventh gear setting to blast past them both, although Button was able to take the next corner ahead of the Ferrari and leave Alonso sandwiched between the McLarens. It was a landmark victory for Sebastian Vettel, the first time he's won four consecutive races in the same season. He's not actually been out of the lead in a Grand Prix since the moment that Lewis Hamilton's gearbox failed
in Singapore. That means he's now been out in front and in a class of his own for 205 consecutive laps (the fourth-longest streak in F1 history, behind Alberto Ascari's 1952 record of 305 and two runs for Ayrton Senna in 1988 and 1989) which includes heading every single lap of the last three Grand Prix races. Amazingly, Vettel is the only driver to have ever led a lap of a Grand Prix in India. Vettel also played down the rumours circulating the pit lane that suggested that the German was set to join forces with Fernando Alonso from 2014 onwards, with Felipe Massa's new deal with the Maranellobased team being a stop-gap deal before the German was brought in. While both Ferrari and Red Bull were quick to try and dispel the rumours, Vettel himself has moved to quash the talk in order to show his commitment to his current team.
That meant Yamaha rider Lorenzo required just three points to clinch the championship, which he easily achieved with a distant second place behind Pedrosa's team-mate Casey Stoner.

Casey Stoner completed his Phillip Island fairytale by winning at home for the sixth successive time, on his last Australian MotoGP appearance before retirement. Cal Crutchlow produced a gritty ride to earn his second MotoGP podium finish and kick off his birthday celebrations in style, the British rider will be 27 on Monday and rewarded himself with an early present — third place behind home
hero Casey Stoner and newly crowned MotoGP world champion Lorenzo. Crutchlow, still feeling the effects of a bout of bronchitis, was celebrating his second career MotoGP rostrum after standing on the podium for the first time at Brno.

Alonso remains upbeat
Jorge Lorenzo became Spain's first ever double premier-class grand prix champion by clinching the 2012 MotoGP crown at Phillip Island in Australia on Sunday. Twenty-five year old Lorenzo came into the penultimate round needing to beat Pedrosa to avoid a final round showdown at Valencia. But Pedrosa’s battling charge over the last few races counted for nothing when he lost the front of his RCV at the hairpin on lap two.

Peter Hanson captures the BMW Masters Peter Hanson resisted a late charge from Rory McIlroy to win the BMW Masters in Shanghai by one shot. The 35-year-old Swede, one ahead of the world number one overnight, held his nerve on the final hole to secure his sixth European Tour victory. Hanson led by four with five to play but McIlroy eagled the 15th and birdied the 16th to ensure a nervy finish. Luke Donald and Ian Poulter, two more of Europe's Ryder Cup team in Chicago last month, finished third and fourth.

Pam Shemmings does it for the 5th time! Last week saw the running of the first Miraflores club competition in this year’s bowling calendar, namely the Men’s & Ladies’ 2-wood singles. Fortunately the competition was played before the heavy rain arrived at the end of the week, so no wets were needed! There was a good entry in both disciplines this year and during the course of the competition most of the matches were very closely contended with a final score of 21-19 or 21-20 commonplace. The finals saw Graham Rowley and Pam Shemmings, both

previous winners of this competition up against Tony Gatter and Ann Rowley who were both attempting a first win in this event and giving us the possibility of a Rowley family clean sweep. In the Ladies final we observed a superb display of bowling by both ladies with the lead changing hands regularly, Ann started to pull away leading 15-9 after 18 ends but Pam kept chipping away to draw level 19-19 after 28 ends. She then picked up two shots on the next end to win the competition for a fifth time 21-19.

Battling away point for Malaga After the historic win in midweek over AC Milan in the Champions League, it was back to league action for Malaga in Barcelona on Saturday afternoon. Argentine striker Javier Saviola and Spanish winger Joaquin Sanchez were left out by coach Manuel Pellegrini and Saviola’s replacement Roque Santa Cruz was doing his best to get on the score sheet. Malaga started well with Demichelis going close on five minutes. A minute later Forlan for Espanyol nodded his header wide. Demichelis then had another chance for Malaga but headed across the six yard box rather than at the goal. Espanyol rarely bothered Malaga's defense, which remained the best in

Fantastic Opportunity! Demichelis goes up to challenge with defender Alvarez
the league with only five goals conceded in nine games, and they still have a clean sheet in five Champions League matches, a great record. Malaga finished the first half strongly and really showed no ill affects of their midweek tustle. This carried on into the second half with Seba Fernandez shooting over after a good move in the 52 minute. Santa Cruz scuffed a couple
of chances and Espanyol's Wakaso blazed over when he should have done better. In the dying seconds another Santa Cruz header could have secured all three points for Malaga but it was well saved by Alvarez. A good point that kept Malaga in third place.
