May announces Wales abuse inquiry details Home Secretary Theresa May has outlined details of the inquiry into the way historic allegations of child abuse in North Wales were handled. This comes after Steve Messham, who claims he was abused by a senior Thatcher-era Conservative, said an earlier inquiry did not fully investigate abuse claims. William Hague ordered an inquiry into the abuse in 1996, when he was Welsh secretary. Over a

ICKHAM’S

WORLD Who am I?

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

I am an avid watcher of TV’s “Who do you think you are?” and started a genealogy class a few weeks ago. My husband’s mum traced their family tree way back hundreds of years while she was alive, keeping records as she went, so he has all that knowledge whenever he might want to see it. Me, I’m another thing entirely. Adopted as a baby I had very little idea what my biological lineage was and, oh wow, are there some skeletons in the cupboard coming out! I met my sister for the first time a couple of years ago so we dabbled a little while I was with her over in Canada but now I wish I’d known Russell then. We paid out a small fortune to Ancestry.com and the like that we wouldn’t have had to pay out had we known the ins-and-outs of searching records, and it’s so easy to start going along the wrong route that looks good but isn’t. So, if you’re interested in tracing your family tree or finding out more about your ancestors, I would highly recommend you go and talk to Russell. His enthusiasm for his subject will get the excitement going in the first place! Call him on 665 016 374 (his ad is in Classifieds in this paper if you lose this column). He’s brilliant!! The Olive Tree opened last Thursday up here in Coin, where the Fogon de Antonio Restaurant used to be. We went for our breakfast – 2 eggs, 2 sausages, 2 bacon, 2 hash browns, beans, tomato and toast – and all for a fiver! Everybody was saying how delicious it was too. See their ad in Out and About.

May announces Wales abuse inquiry details Concerns have now been raised that the remit of the inquiry was too narrow, and that it failed to consider allegations about children being taken out of the homes to be made available to abusers. Mrs May said it was vital to look fully at what had been done in the past. During a radio interview, she said: "There is going to be a review of the Waterhouse review, looking at the way it was conducted. I think it is entirely right and proper for the government to say we should look to make sure that the work that was done in relation to the Waterhouse inquiry did cover everything that it needed to cover. "These issues are hugely

shocking and we do need to go back and have a review of that inquiry to make sure that it did do the job that it was supposed to do. "What we need to do is what the government is doing, which is saying – given the nature of these concerns, given the background, given the appalling nature of child abuse – we need to look very carefully to make sure that what was done in the past did indeed cover everything that it needed to do, and was done properly." Mr Messham has said that inquiry covered a fraction of the alleged assaults carried out at children's homes in North Wales during the 1970s and 1980s.

Allegations of abuse centring around the Bryn Estyn care home in North Wales (right), and involving almost 40 children's homes in Wales, began to emerge in the 1990s. However, a report commissioned in March 1994 by Clwyd County Council was never published because of legal concerns. Keith Gregory, a Wrexham councillor, has said he was sexually, physically and mentally abused at Bryn Estyn in the 1970s, by staff and others from the local community. He said the abusers included MPs, solicitors, judges, factory directors, shopkeepers and serving

police officers. Counsel for the Waterhouse inquiry mentioned the existence of a "shadowy figure of high public standing", but said that there was no substantial evidence to support the allegations. The inquiry identified 28 alleged perpetrators but they were never identified in public. Prime Minister David Cameron said the

allegations were "very concerning" and "dreadful". He said: "We must get to the bottom of them as quickly as possible on behalf of the victims and that is why I have ordered this rapid investigation into the previous inquiry to find out if there was something wrong with it and to make sure the victims were properly listened to.”

Top court rules in favour of word ‘marriage’ for gay unions The Constitutional Court on Tuesday voted in favour of gay marriage in a long-awaited decision on the law which was challenged by the Partido Popular (PP) when it was in opposition. The judges agreed to keep the word “marriage” for same-sex unions, as set out in the ground-breaking reform passed during the Socialist government on June 30th, 2005. The PP challenged the law in late 2005 arguing that the reform of the Civil Code violated at least seven amendments in the

Spanish Constitution, including Article 32 “for not respecting the constitutional definition of a union between a man and a woman”. Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón said earlier this year that the PP government would respect the Constitutional Court’s decision, whatever it may

be. Besides Gallardón, who said it was his personal decision to support samesex marriage, other PP politicians, such as thenMadrid regional premier Esperanza Aguirre, came out against her party’s appeal to the Constitutional Court. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was ambiguous

about the issue during last year’s election campaign. In an interview the El Pais newspaper just before last November’s election he said: “The answer is very simple. We are going to wait and see what the Constitutional Court says. We are going to wait and not speculate.”

National News National holidays to be limited The government has postponed until 2014 the introduction of reforms to limit the number of holidays and long weekends, known as “puentes” (bridges), as part of its efforts to increase worker productivity. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría said after last Friday’s Cabinet meeting that there is no rush to designate what holidays workers will be entitled to next year because most of those days will fall on Fridays, Mondays or during the weekend in 2013. In January, the trade unions and the nation’s largest business confederation, the CEOE, agreed to push national holidays to Mondays so that workers can still enjoy a three-day weekend while curbing the practice of taking additional

Studies by the CEOE have shown that workers are less productive on Mondays following these “weekend bridges.” Meanwhile the government is negotiating with the Catholic Church about what to do with three specific dates: August 15th, Feast of the Assumption; November 1st, All Saints Day, and December 8th, the Immaculate Conception. The main trade unions, the CCOO and the UGT, want to

The footage shows the woman begging with the police to allow her on board. Other passengers can be heard offering to put the items in their own cases, before shouting "shameful, shameful" as the woman was escorted off the plane. Ryanair allows passengers to carry only one piece of hand luggage with dimensions of 55cm by 40cm by 20cm or less and weighing up to 10kg. Anything larger must be checked into the hold. The airline currently charges between £15 and £30 per flight for a single bag weighing less than 15kg. Airlines have become increasingly dependent on “ancillary” revenue - such as baggage charges and priority boarding fees - to maintain their profits.

Crisis causes drop in road deaths The Traffic Authority (DGT) is still wondering why there was only one road death the weekend of Friday, October 26th, to Sunday October 28th this year – the first time since it began keeping records in 1960 – when during the last period in October 2005, 42 people died on the roads. However, that was an average figure in those days – road deaths have dropped considerably since then to around an average of 10. A spokesman for the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) said there were many reasons for the drop but that two important factors were the high price of petrol and a decline in road travel. According to the study “Spanish drivers and the 2011 crisis, produced by

Fesvial said other factors such as getting a hefty speeding fine or having an accident, which involves car repairs, have also helped Spanish drivers change their driving habits.

Police oďŹƒcer jailed for grenade incident Barcelona’s regional High Court has sentenced a policeman to one year in jail for the negligent use of a flashbang grenade which destroyed the testicles of a suspect he was trying to arrest in 2008. Alberto Morano was kicked off the Mossos d’Esquadra’s Special Intervention Group (GEI) for one year and ordered to pay his victim, JosĂŠ Antonio CoscolĂn, â‚Ź168,000 in compensation. Another defendant, Sergeant VĂctor Esteban, also of the GEI, was acquitted.

Coscolín told the court he cannot father children, despite having been operated on six times. The burst from the flashbang grenade, which landed in his lap while he was inside his car, destroyed his entire right testicle and 75 percent of the left one. The incident occurred in Castelldefels, Barcelona province, on November 4th, 2008 when the Mossos, who had an outstanding arrest warrant, were trying to track down Coscolín s employer – a debt collector who used aggressive

methods to collect money. Coscolín was in the passenger seat of his boss’s Porsche Cayenne when the Mossos tried to stop the car. Eye witnesses and the police testified that the driver refused to stop until one of the officers broke the window of the Porsche with an emergency rescue hammer. Morano said he then decided to use his flashbang grenade because he feared he and his companions would be run over.

Police blame building design for stampede that killed four After sifting through the videos of the 90 security cameras that were installed around Madrid Arena, where the Thriller Music Park concert was held on Halloween, the police homicide group investigating the stampede that killed three young women in the early hours of Thursday morning last week said on Tuesday that the building had not been designed to deal with mass movements in its interior. Initially it was thought that two flares which were set off inside the building had panicked hundreds of the 9,650-ticket crowd, crushing Katie Casielles, 18, Rocio Oña Pineda, 18, and Cristina Arce, 20, to death. The fourth victim, Belén Langdon del Real, 17, died on Saturday morning at Madrid’s 12 de Octubre Hospital after succumbing to the injuries she sustained when she was crushed by a mob. Her parents, who were in Brazil when the tragedy struck, rushed home to be by her

Parties and unions not exempted Justice minister alberto ruiz-Gallardón has said that in the reform of the Penal Code his department is drawing up, political parties and trade unions will also be subject to criminal prosecution in the same way as individuals. Gallardón told Parliament in response to a question that “it doesn’t make sense” for political and labour groups to be exempt from prosecution as is currently the case. However, he rejected a proposal that people who had been implicated in crimes should be barred from standing for political office but added he was willing to study options under which an individual could be prevented from taking part in elections if legal proceedings had been initiated on the basis of a “rational indication of criminality”.

ETA willing to disband side. Another young woman, María Teresa Alonso, who was also crushed by the crowds, was still listed in critical condition at a Madrid hospital at press time on Tuesday. All the people interviewed by the police confirmed footage that showed an estimated 2,000 youths who were holding a street party outside the building jumping the turnstiles just before the stampede started. Police said they had clashed with hundreds of others who had been trying to descend from the upper tiers to the

concert hall’s main floor. They said the security men on the doors had gone inside to try to find the person who set off the flares. The Madrid Arena has a capacity of 10,900. At one point during the concert, electronic-music DJ Steve Aoki announced: “Can you believe that there are 15,000 of us here?” Police are also looking into allegations that there were not enough security guards – the organisers said 113 security men had been hired for the event. Two friends of the sister of Katia Esteban Casielles, one of

the three dead youngsters, have started a petition to get partygoers to send in their ticket stubs in order to prove that "there were more people in there than was allowed". Meanwhile, Madrid Mayor Ana Botella called a press conference on Friday evening to announce that "never again" will the city rent out municipal facilities for huge parties. She said: "The risk is too high when you bring together too many people and too much alcohol," adding that "We've seen this too often in too many parts of the world."

the Basque terrorist group eta has made it known that it is willing to permanently disarm and disband if the government agrees to more flexible terms to its prison policies to allow eta inmates to reincorporate into society. since eta declared its definitive ceasefire a year ago, the government has increased pressure on the group to turn over their weapons and disband before any peace talks can be held. some 30 eta members have been arrested since then, most of them in France, Belgium, Italy and Britain. the government attitude is that eta is very weak and should disband as soon as possible if it wants to improve its prisoners' conditions “because if not, we will break them up ourselves".

Nuclear reactors shut down

In a landmark judgement Australia's Federal court ruled on Monday that Standard & Poor's misled investors by giving its highest rating to derivatives that lost almost all their value in the run-up to the 2008 global economic crisis. The Australian case marked the first time a ratings agency had faced trial over the complex financial products widely cited as one of the factors that triggered the crisis and could set a precedent for future litigation around the world. In a strongly worded judgement, Justice Jayne Jagot said S&P and ABN Amro had deceived 12 local councils that bought the

Two nuclear reactors have been shut down after it was revealed that some of the parts used had not been properly vetted. Knowledge economy Minister Hong Suk-woo said on Monday these were "non-core" parts and were not a safety threat. The shutdown means there could be "unprecedented" power shortages in the next few months, Mr Hong said. South Korea's 23 nuclear reactors, which supply 35% of the country's electricity, have experienced a series of malfunctions over the past few months, fuelling opposition to the government's bid to vastly expand its nuclear industry. new zealand

Mine disaster 'preventable' triple-A rated CPDO, or constant proportion debt obligation, notes created by the bank. Jagot awarded the 12 councils in New South Wales state a total of about A$30 million for losses and damages. S&P said it plans to

appeal the ruling. Lawyer Amanda Banton of Piper Alderman, who represented the local councils said: "This is a major blow to the ratings agencies, which for years have had the benefit of profiting from the assignment of these ratings

without ever being accountable to investors for those opinions." She added: "Today's judgement will ultimately have the effect of ensuring ratings agencies are accountable and promoting transparency in the ratings process."

Acid attack parents 'feared dishonour' A couple (pictured right) arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of killing their 15year-old daughter with acid said they carried out the attack because she looked at a boy and they feared she would bring dishonour on their family. The girl’s father is reported to have taken his daughter inside, beaten her and then acid was poured

over her with the help of his wife. They did not take their daughter to hospital following the until morning. The couple say that an older daughter had already disgraced the family and they did not want to be dishonoured again. Her mother said it was her "destiny" to die that way. The couple were arrested

last week in Pakistaniadministered Kashmir, where acid attacks are relatively rare and punishable with life imprisonment.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reported 943 women were killed in honour killings last year, 100 more than in 2010.

The november 19th 2010 gas blast at the Pike River mine that killed 29 workers was preventable, an investigation has found. The mine was new, and the systems and infrastructure necessary to safely produce coal "had not been completed". Ventilation and methane drainage systems "could not cope with everything the company was trying to do" – and numerous warnings were ignored. Health and safety systems at the mine were inadequate, and reports of excessive methane levels were "not heeded". a drive for production "before the mine was ready" created the circumstances for the tragedy, the report found. labour Minister Kate wilkinson resigned shortly after the report was released. cuba

US accused of helping dissidents access the internet The government has accused the united States of helping cuban dissidents access the internet as part of a campaign to undermine the communist government. In a foreign ministry statement, cuba said the uS was "promoting, financing and supplying" opponents of the government using "diverse media". It blamed staff at the uS Interests Section at the Swiss embassy in Havana. uS State department spokeswoman Victoria nuland said the section did offer free internet courses for cubans as well as access to computers – like all other uS missions – but denied that diplomats were working to subvert the cuban government. access to the internet in cuba is severely restricted, but some activists have used it to challenge the government.

Greece in grip of 48-hour strike A 48-hour general strike across public and private sectors started in Greece on Tuesday in protest at a proposed new wave of spending cuts. The action coincides with a debate in parliament on the austerity measures, with a vote by MPs due on Wednesday. The cuts include a fifth consecutive cut to pensions, an increase in the retirement age and reductions in salaries, benefits and healthcare. The government has said the package should save a

total of €13.5 billion by 2016. Approving the tough reforms and passing the 2013 budget are key to receiving a €31.5 billion instalment from the International Monetary Fund and European Union that has been on hold for months. The latest strike – the 25th in the past two years – includes public transport workers, lawyers, air traffic controllers, taxi drivers, journalists and hospital staff. Some transport and

media workers downed tools on Monday as well. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has tried to reassure the public, who have endured repeated rounds of austerity and a five-year recession. He said on Sunday: "These will be the last cuts in wages and pensions. We promised to avert the country's exit from the euro and this is what we are doing. We have given absolute priority to this because if we do not achieve this everything else will be meaningless."

Cameron prepares for a Euro budget showdown While Britain is expanding its diplomatic and trade activities worldwide it appears the country could be on a collision course with its European partners after a House of Commons vote demanded that Prime Minister David Cameron fight for a cut in European Union spending. Fifty-three Conservative back bench MPs voted with Labour to call for a cut rather than a freeze in the EU budget which is up for discussion at an EU

Bad weather hits South of England A combination of rain, snow and blizzards over the weekend left parts of England and Wales on flood alert – the South West being worst affected. Heavy rain fell on already wet ground, causing a great deal of surface water, and snow fell in parts of Somerset, Dorset, Wilshire and Gloucestershire. Traffic in many parts came to a standstill and Sherborne in Dorset saw up to 3” of snowfall. And on Monday people were advised to wrap up warmly for the traditional November 5th bonfire night firework displays although health and safety departments had banned a good many public displays.

summit this month. Ministers have said they do not believe there is any realistic prospect of a cut rather than a freeze as 17 of the 26 member states get more money out of the EU than they put in, but in the present climate of austerity they do believe a freeze is possible and that agreement could be obtained. Mr Cameron’s supporters insisted that they were prepared for the

Government defeat on the issue and that it was not whether they wanted a cut but more a question of how a cut might be best achieved. It is generally accepted that the vote will send a message and strengthen Mr Cameron’s hand as his Parliament has insisted he must ask for a cut while opposing the European Commission’s demand for a budget increase.

Britain steps up fight against dementia Prime Minister David Cameron is to announce a British Government backed trial of new medical technology designed to diagnose dementia in just three months. The new digital diagnosis, to be piloted on 200 patients early next year, will combine computer tests and analysis of MRI

brain scans. If successful it could be rolled out across the country. It is estimated that over 400,000 people in the UK are suffering from dementia but are denied care and support because their condition is undiagnosed. At present diagnosis can take 18 months.

New health shake-up There is to be a further shake-up of Britain’s National Health Service following public concerns over end-of-life care and demands for single sex wards. Ministers said reforms would be enshrined in a NHS Constitution that

would empower patients and ensure their wishes come first. Family members would be involved in treatment decisions and health trusts that fail to discuss issues properly could be sued and doctors struck off.

Ash disease THERE are serious concerns for the future of ash trees in Britain following the discovery of a disease which kills the species. The Government has now introduced a ban on the importation of ash trees into the UK. The disease is a big problem in Europe, although it appears to be restricted to the South East and East of Britain at present. Ian Wright, a plant health specialist with the National Trust, said: “We are particularly concerned about a significant number of our older ash trees. Many, over 300 years old, grow on National Trust land. If this devastating disease took hold it would radically change some of our most special landscapes and places forever.”

Admiralty Arch to be turned into a hotel Everybody who has ever watched a Royal event or even the London Marathon would recognise the beautiful features of Admiralty Arch that stands at the opposite end of The Mall to Buckingham Palace, beyond which you would travel along to Trafalgar Square and Nelson’s Column which can clearly be seen from the windows of the gatehouse building.

Victoria – has been bought by Spanish hotel owner Rafael Serrano for a cool £60 million. The man who also owns the £850 a night Bulgari in Knightbridge has promised to keep the 100year-old building’s period features and intends to include a ‘sumptuous ballroom’ and spa plus ‘subtle illuminations’ in his plans to turn it into a 5-star luxury hotel with 100 guest bedrooms attracting 50,000 guests a year. It is estimated there will be a further 50,000 visitors to its bars and restaurants that will be

open to the public. Of course, it is good news for London too with many jobs being created during the refurbishment programme. £60 million for such a building is cheap but the deal holds the agreement that the Arch be completely overhauled and restored. This is expected to cost hundreds of millions of pounds during its 99-year lease that will be retained by the Government – giving them the final say. The eight-storey, 147,300 square foot building that is

Rains cause havoc in Rich kids the worst abusers of parents three provinces Recent rains have flooded several towns in the provinces of Cordoba, Sevilla and Jaen, leaving five people injured and millions of euro’s worth of material damage. The weekend’s orange alert has been reduced to yellow for the rains that continue across the region. The forecast for the next few days is wet with the odd dry day and getting colder. The upside is that the threat of drought no

longer hangs over Malaga province, after an extremely dry Spring and Summer. Most of the province’s reservoirs have now reached 70 per cent of their capacity. The fullest is the

Guadalhorce reservoir - 94 per cent – and the Concepcion reservoir has the lowest level, at 50 per cent. However, it looks as if that may change over the next few days.

Robbery a family business The Guardia Civil have arrested a family of four and charged them with breaking into three houses in the Torrenueva urbanisation in Mijas.

A spokesman said the father and son did the breaking and entering, the mother drove the getaway car and the grandmother was in charge of selling the booty.

The Guardia finally tracked them down to a rented house just outside Alora where they found three guns, ammunition, and ski masks in addition to some stolen goods.

Sources at Malaga’s Juvenile Court have told a local paper that of the average of nine cases of children abusing their parents each week, the vast majority involve youngsters from comfortable homes, in which both parents work and earn above average salaries.

However, the source said this could be because poorer parents were reluctant to report such abuse. A specialist said the children who abuse their parents are from homes where both parents work and they do not want for anything – decent schools,

clothing, food, medical attention, games, etc.). But the specialist said that despite their material comfort they often lacked emotional warmth. He added that as families became increasingly democratic, parents had to make it quite clear that they were still in charge.

Algeciras mayor upsets Gibraltar Algeciras Mayor Jose Ignacio Landaluce has sent a letter to Gibraltar´s chef minister, Fabian Picardo, asking him in the interest of safety and security to use his influence to stop people like the members of the Defenders of Gibraltar group from placing images of the Guardia Civil at work at the frontier on the Internet and to remove those already on line. The anti-Gibraltar group “Gibraltar Español” has posted the letter on its

Facebook page, leading to scathing comments in the Gibraltar local press accusing the mayor of leaking the letter to the

group, an active right-wing anti-Gibraltar social networking group which claims to have 27,000 members.

Town planner's home is illegal The town of Chiclana in Cádiz province is a perfect example of the country’s crazy planning laws. Nearly half of the town’s 80,000 residents live in illegal homes, including town planning councillor Marisol Ayala. Chiclana is trapped in a legal limbo that has forced it to return to a planning regulation dating from 1987 because the courts cancelled all its later zoning plans and it cannot grant any new first occupancy licenses – a legal requirement in Spain. Nobody can remember how it all began, but Chiclana gradually grew from a smallish village to a large town while the local authorities turned a blind eyes to houses being built on rural land, flood zones and protected areas. The real estate boom of the 1980s and 1990s created a very profitable, if legally questionable, business in which homes were bought and sold even though they did not show up on any city zoning plans. Everyone was involved – the locals who built and sold the properties, the people who bought them, the banks that approved the mortgage loans, the notaries who signed the deeds and the town council who collected the corresponding fees. However, the Junta de Andalucia began to try to impose order on chaos some 10 years ago and the council began local regularising homes – at an average cost of €38,000 which included the provision of basic services like running water, sewers or power. That’s when Ayala created a Citizens Platform to represent all the people living in illegal homes. Its programme included a request for amnesty, fine reductions and the chance to make the homes legal at a minimum cost. By 2007, when the Partido Popular took over the town hall from the Socialists, nothing had been done so Ayala created another party, the Partido Vecinal Regionalista (PVRE), which received 2,843 votes in the local

elections held in 2011, giving it the right to two councillors. The PP did not win an outright majority and in order to get his budget approved, Mayor Ernesto Marín made a deal with the PVRE, and appointed Ayala city planning councillor, that is, the person who decides on planning fines and home legalisations. So far not much has

been done for the owners of local homes – Ayala is being heavily criticised and may soon find herself without a job if the members of her party have anything to do with it. However the Junta de Andalucia plans to introduce provisional regulations that will at least grant first occupancy licenses to a town stuck in 1987.

Memo from

Voice Madrid Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Hope springs eternal

The eviction problem

H

T

opefully by the time our readers get to this column they will know that Barak Obama was re-elected president of the United States. If the winner is Mitt Romney we will all be in for a rough time because he will allow the speculative capital markets to run wild. They got us into the current economic crisis and should be tightly reined in – something that Obama is more likely to do.

H

ope also springs eternal for Catalan regional premier Artur Mas, or perhaps a better word to describe his current state would be “delirious”. He now sees himself as the Catalan version of Scotland´s Braveheart, William Wallace. His attitude is that Scotland and Catalonia are soul sisters and if the Scots can have a referendum so can the Catalans. But as many political observers have pointed out, the two countries have little in common. Scotland was an independent country for centuries before its rulers decided it made more sense to join the English, seeing as how they couldn't beat them. Despite the Catalan separatists' attempt to rewrite history, Catalonia was never an independent state. It has always belonged to France, Aragon, Navarre or Spain once it was united by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. With surveys showing that some 60% of Scots will vote against independence in 2014, Scotland wouldn't seem to be the best role model for Catalonia. Indeed, a recent poll there showed that while around 60 per cent want independence, an equal number don't want Catalonia to leave the EU. It sounds like they're all suffering from a slight dose of schizophrenia.

S

everal EU officials have stated quite categorically in the past week or so that an independent Catalonia will have to re-apply for admission to the EU, at the end of a line of a whole lot of other countries. Mas and his henchman appear not to have read the newspapers, and are still waffling on about a glorious future as what he now calls “a state within Europe”. The two main opposition parties in Catalonia – the Socialists and the PP – accuse Mas of exploiting the independence issue in the hope of winning a majority in the November 25th regional election. They are using the same issue to put the wind up all those voters who don't want to break with Spain. What I can't understand – given the results of recent polls averse to outright independence –

is why the Madrid government won't let him have his referendum and be done with it once and for all.

Arthur Mas in Moscow

M

eanwhile, Mas's latest caper was a four-day visit to Moscow last week, where he and his wife and seven members of the regional government stayed at a luxury hotel – paid out by Catalan taxpayers, most of whom can barely make it to the end of the month. Meanwhile the pharmacies there seem to be on permanent strike because the regional government owes them millions. They – and the thousands of other Catalan companies and entities the regional government owes money to – won't see cent until the evil Spanish government in Madrid replenishes the public coffers. The official purpose of the visit was to strengthen ties between Russia and Catalonia which is receiving increasing numbers of tourists from what is left of the old USSR. But no-one in the Russian government wanted to speak to him so Mas was left wanting. It seems he was under the impression that the Russians would be sympathetic to his separatist dream. How he could expect sympathy from a government that is still still licking the spiritual and emotional wounds inflicted by the break-up of the mighty USSR empire, I don't know.

I

suspect the independence issue will die a natural death once a majority of Catalans realise that their beloved Barça will have to leave the Spanish Football Federation if and when the region breaks away. So it will be adios (and good riddance) Messi – who wants to play on a team that has no rival in Catalonia. I wonder why the Spanish politicians aren't playing up that aspect of the issue. Perhaps I should start bombarding all Spanish national and local newspapers with letters to singlehandedly bury the question of Catalan independence once and for all time.

B

ring me my sword and chariot of fire and a couple of windmills and I'll get on with it.

he government and the opposition Socialists held one of those rare get-togethers on Tuesday to try to come up with ways to stop the growing number of people from being evicted from their homes because they cannot continue to pay their mortgage. When two arch enemies meet, such as the Partido Popular and the PSOE, it has to be serious business. The eviction problem is becoming a desperate situation. The banking industry is heavily favoured by the way the mortgage laws work in this county. In a nutshell, people who lose their homes for non-payment will always have that debt hanging over their heads until it is entirely paid off. The Socialists, as well as a few other parties in Parliament, want to change the laws so that people who give up their homes voluntarily will no longer be responsible for the outstanding mortgage. Former Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero tried to introduce reforms but was under a lot of pressure from the banking industry.

N

ow the situation has gotten out of hand. More than 350,000 evictions have taken place in Spain since 2007. Activist groups, such as the platform, Those Affected By Mortgages, say they have stopped court bailiffs from coming in and kicking people out in as many as 300 cases by taking a stand outside the homes of the targeted families. The courts are also getting fed up with this matter. There have been more than a dozen cases throughout Spain where magistrates side with home owners by coming up with “creative” rulings whereby families can remain living on their properties while reaching some sort of an agreement with their lenders.

T

he Rajoy government asked the banks to sign a Code of Good Practice earlier this year to deal with the situation, but this is an industry that is not known for its Good Samaritan ways. The Economy Ministry says it is too early to determine whether this code is working. Still, the PP and the Socialists want to work something out so they can present it in Congress. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saénz de Santamaría held a meeting with top Socialists to reach some sort of middle ground. PSOE lawmakers have considered radical changes to the mortgage laws, including calling for a moratorium on evictions until this country can get back on its feet. Kicking

people out of their jobs as well as throwing them on the streets is doublefang evil. Many in government and on the outside believe that if the banking industry stands to get all this rescue money from the public coffers then it is only reasonable that it starts playing fair. Yet both political parties are treading on a delicate balance, because no doubt the banks, regardless of the amount of aid they plan on getting, will always control the purse strings in this country.

No permits

Pedro Calvo

T

he Halloween night tragedy that claimed the lives of four young women and put another girl in a critical condition at a Madrid area hospital didn’t have to happen. These massive events are always platforms for disasters. Now it appears that the Madrid Arena – the venue where last Wednesday’s Thriller Music Party concert was held at the Spanish capital’s Casa de Campo park and where the deadly stampede of people took place – didn’t have a license to hold such an event. According to city officials, the Arena was denied permits in 2010 because of the lack of safety features, such as adequate emergency exits and ventilation. Yet the site has hosted hundreds of concerts, exhibitions, shows and other public events since 2002. The city’s economic commissioner, Pedro Calvo, acknowledged this past weekend that he tried to obtain the permits from the city’s urban affairs department in 2009 but desisted when building inspectors found serious safety deficiencies. But the uncanny part of this entire story is that Calvo insists that a ground space law, passed by the regional government but not the city council, exempted the arena and other municipal buildings from having to obtain such permits. This indeed is a confusing explanation that only adds more despair to the families of the victims who are still searching for answers.

Two hundred issues - and getting stronger

cover of our very first issue

This Wednesday marks a landmark in the life of The News – it is our 200th edition this week! When we started with our first edition on December 17th 2008 we had a great team of people all pulling together to make sure that The News would grow into something that everybody would want to pick up and READ each week. We all tend to pick up something that’s free but to know that people constantly tell us “Ooh, good, The News is here, it’s my favourite” on a Wednesday when we deliver tells us that all our efforts have been worthwhile. We still have that same great team who put their heart and soul into The News every week and we all work together here – if someone thinks they have a good idea to make The News even better, we’ll give it a go and change things.

Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t so it’s a dynamic, ever-changing publication that moves with new ideas and the times. We never want to get boring and picked up and just slung in the bin without being read. We are also told by many of our readers that they read The News from cover to cover. That tells us that our content is spot-on for what you want to sit down and look at too. All business is a struggle these days but the feedback we get from our readers, and, of course, from our advertisers – without whom we wouldn’t be here – means that the effort we all make is worthwhile. So, a great big thank-you goes to my team of people, all our advertisers past, present and hopefully future and, of course, to all our readers. See you again at 300! written by Kym Wickham

you to the Old Maas city. Of course Rotterdam is known for her harbours – until recently Rotterdam was the largest sea port in the world! Nowadays there are still many interesting things to see in the main port, varying from oil tankers as large as buildings, to parts of industrial tourism, picturesque harbour buildings and pubs. After lunch we will depart for Willemstad arriving at around 4pm after which you will have free time to wander around taking in the sights as you wish. Day 7. December 27th We will be sailing on our way to the famous city of Ghent, (below, right) arriving in time for an evening tour of the city. The people of Ghent love to party. They love to eat, they love to drink and they love it when you come and visit their city, because they know how important ‘Gand’ was. And they know how interesting and fun it is for you to spend the night here! And what’s even better about Ghent (besides

the mussels with fries and the foamy Belgian beers) is that there’s so much to see! There’s the Ghentse opera, the city hall, the impressive Lakenhal and the abbey Sint Baafsabdij. Also unique is that Ghent didn’t suffer much in the First nor Second World War. Because of that, visitors nowadays are still able to see a lot of ancient buildings. Day 8. December 28th Last chance for any shopping you want to do in Ghent before we start on our cruise towards Antwerp – although we will dock for a short time for you to take in Bruges by night in all its twinkling magical glory (pictured below, left). Together with your Holland Tour Guides’ guide (of course with Flemish accent) you will be visiting the historical centre. During the tour you will hear all the marvellous stories about Antwerp and its history. How many famous sights in Antwerp can you name? Did you think about: The City hall, the “Onze Lieve Vrouwenkathedraal”

(Cathedral of Our Lady) or the famous big market? We could go further on with counting them or…why not just visit them? All these sights are in walking distance from one another and this is why it is possible to see a lot in a very short time. In the afternoon you will be able to join an excursion to Brussels boarding our luxury coach to drive along to the magnificent St. Michaels’ cathedral towards the National Basilica of Koekelberg, one of the most imposing churches in Europe. Next, we take you to the worldfamous Atomium, the Chinese Pavilion and the Japanese tower. Via the Royal residence of Laeken and the Royal St Mary’s church. We then drive back to the city centre and visit the Sablon district with its elegant stores selling beautiful antiques. After that you will see the impressive Court of Justice, and we drive to the stately Place Royale and the Royal Palace. The next part of tour brings you to the European district with the European Parliament, the European Commission and Council of Ministers. In the Park of the Jubilee you will marvel at the monumental

Triumphal Arch and some excellent examples of Art Nouveau houses. Passing the Royal Parc and the Belgian Parliament we drive back to the city centre where our tour ends. Day 10. December 30th We arrive in Nijmegen, considered to be one of the oldest towns in The Netherlands. You will have some free time to look around the town. Day 11. December 31st Today we are in Dusseldorf and you will be able to enjoy a guided tour of this bustling city. Lunch will be onboard ship but feel free afterwards to return to the city, or just relax onboard and wait for the New Year’s celebrations we have in store for you!

Community News Calling all diabetics! Are you diabetic or do you know someone who IS diabetic? Then November is the month for your attention. November 14th is World Diabetes Day and around the world there is an enormous drive to make people aware of this silent killer – diabetes. The La Cala Lions Diabetic Support Group was formed 11 years ago to help those who suffer come to terms with this condition. They hold seven meetings per month along the Costa del Sol and during this time have offered information, lectures and blood tests promoting awareness generally. They also have a very active Helpline should anyone seek advice or help with a

diabetic problem. During November they will be offering random blood tests in various places so that you can find out if you are likely to succumb to diabetes. Awareness is very important as diabetes can be busy in your body ten years before it is diagnosed! If left unattended it can cause serious damage. Diabetes is not a killer in itself; it is the side effects of blindness, heart trouble, circulation problems causing amputation, kidney failure and neuropathy (i.e. loss of sensation in limbs) to name a few which are such health hazards.

Lions Diabetic Support Group is to encourage diabetics to manage their condition so they avoid these problems. When a diabetic is in full control and understands how the body is coping then they can lead a normal life. Diet and exercise are all important; however a diabetic should not feel deprived of a favourite food. The Group say everything in moderation, and their aim is simply to allow you to take control. If you would like their team to visit your club or venue (i.e. restaurant, store etc.) please telephone Anne Bowles on 952 46 41 84 or 607 879 450 or visit their website at www.lacaladiabetics.com.

Having studied at Merristwood Agricultural College in Guildford and having been his own boss since he was 16 years old he decided to continue with the business he had built up in England and just transfer the trade to here in Spain. Nine years later and he’s still here, enjoying the work and, of course the lifestyle. Too many days were lost to rain in the UK, and he says it is a real pleasure to enjoy the long sunny days and accomplish so much. Having built up a good client base, and a good

The Chairman of the Coin RBL, Jo Taylor, presented the Mayor, Fernando Fernandez Tapia-Ruano, with a standard that was retired from service earlier this year. The standard will now be laid up permanently in the museum at the Convent of St Mary of the Incarnation as a symbol of the close relationship between the members of the RBL in Coin and the community as a whole. As a sign of friendship,

the Mayor presented the RBL chairman with a replica of the tower from the Old Convent referred to locally as the “Torre del Antiguo Convento de Trinitarios”. This simple exchange of gifts strongly illustrates the spirit of cooperation between the Administration of Coin and the Branch of the Royal British Legion that has made its home there.

Simon says: “The work here is varied, and can be anything from small requests, like fitting shelves or replacing a tap washer, to more complex jobs such as fitting kitchens, constructing terraces and also building extensions. I am a minidigger driver, and owning a mini digger here has also opened up more work opportunities. After answering a recent advert in 'The News' newspaper I volunteered my services at a Donkey Sanctuary in Estepona. With the mini digger I was able to level an area of ground for a much needed excercise ring for the

animals, and I have since returned there to do various other jobs. I am pretty handy around the home and garden too, doing all those jobs that people need doing but never get around to doing!” The News would be happy to recommend Simon as we were told by the Donkey Sanctuary that he turned up on time and when he said he would – always a bonus here! – and that he was pleasant and helpful throughout. As he says, they have had him back to do more work so, for a hard pressed charity, his prices must be pretty good too! You can call Simon on 678 450 051.

Teach Your Dog To Eliminate On Command

GUY GUY is a Husky/German Shepherd cross. Born approximately Sept. 2011. Luckily for Guy, workmen had been feeding him for three days and when we went to see him he simply followed us. This is a very kind and obedient dog. He already knows how to sit on command and will be walking by your side without a leash. Guy is a lovely boy who will make a fantastic family pet. To find out more about Guy call Animals in Distress on 626 942 427. You cans also visit our website at www.animalsin-distress.eu to read our news and have a look at the other dogs and cats that we have looking for new homes.

Teach him to poo when you want him to! Part 5 And finally...... The opposite of reward is punishment. Inadvertently punishing your dog after he has eliminated can quickly condition him to hold it as long as possible. Most of us adhere to a tight work and social schedule that sometimes makes an extra fifteen or twenty minutes to spend with our dog hard to come by. If you are going to succeed in teaching your puppy to eliminate on command, you absolutely must make this time available. When you rush him back inside as soon as he has

eliminated, what you are teaching him is that he will get to stay outside longer if he holds it longer. To teach your puppy to eliminate on the word 'busy' you must avoid inadvertent punishment. You can do this by observing a simple rule: Always give your puppy ten minutes of reward time after he has eliminated. RBL father and son

Jake Berry makes his mark Jake Berry MP was the after dinner speaker at the Conservatives Abroad event held at Tamisa Golf last Friday.

Tim Taplin and his son Edward are The Royal British Legion (Mijas Costa) branch standard bearers, Tim is also the standard bearer for the District. They are pictured here as they launch the start of the branch’s 2012 Poppy Appeal. The Mijas Costa branch would like to say a BIG thank you to everyone who has contributed in previous years, and they hope everyone will help them to surpass the €13,700 they raised last year.

Sweet things The children of Swans International School Marbella had great fun while raising money for Kim’s Animal Rescue Centre which suffered hardship following the fires in Mijas in August. The rescue centre had to evacuate the cats and dogs when the hillsides caught fire causing devastation to the valley. Fortunately all the animals were rescued, but the damage and the shortage of supplies brought an aftermath of problems to the centre. Swans International College kindly organised a cake day, where many sweet creations were on sale to raise money for this needy cause. The children managed to raise an amazing €930 that will go towards, food, vet bills, and other aid necessities that will make a better life for the animals at the shelter.

At the dinner, Jake came over as a passionate advocate for his area and guests were impressed with his friendly and relaxed attitude as he moved amongst the diners, easily taking any questions thrown at him in his stride. This is one young man in Parliament to keep an eye on – who knows, he may one day be our Prime Minister!

Recently Jake has launched a new campaign to highlight a service to help local organisations access much needed grants and funds. “There are so many grants and funding schemes available, so it’s often really complicated to find the right one. Sometimes people get so frustrated with the process of applying for a grant, they give up. That’s why I work with the House of Commons library to highlight our own Grant Finder service, with access to over 7000 funding opportunities, for groups in Rossendale & Darwen. The museum can be found in Calle Gaona, 20 (in front of the Church of San Felipe Neri), and is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm with guided tours.

The bottom floor has many English stained glass windows with PreRaphaelite motifs, such as one made in 1880 by Albert Moore. The stairs going to the second floor have beautiful antique ceramic tiles decorating them. The second floor has the rooms divided by the time periods of the glass and crystal

Having opened in September 2009, this popular museum is the work of a man’s obsession with all things beautiful, housed in a carefully restored 18th century palace in the centre of Malaga that was originally built for a noble Italian family. Over 700 items of crystal and glass are on display in home settings with period furniture paintings and decoration from the times making this museum come alive before your eyes. There are chairs, sofas, paintings, mirrors, porcelain, lamps and

Galle, Daum, and La Granja. This museum has some of their most beautiful samples, in every conceivable colour. A visitor is overwhelmed by the beauty of these objects. The value of these antiques is astronomical. The early 20th century room has an exquisite painting of a beautiful woman dressed in red. The painter was Henry Gervex, and the painting is called "El Vestido Rojo" (the red dress). This painting calls attention because the young woman portrayed is shown enjoying life. Another portrait shows a beautiful blond woman standing with her son. The boy in the painting was the grandfather of the owner of the museum. The owner of this private treasure trove is Gonzalo Fernandez-Pietro, who came from Madrid and fell in love with Malaga and

The museum shows his exquisite taste and his passion for collecting glass and crystal, as well as paintings and furniture. The museum is really a decorative arts museum, with the best examples of period furniture. While this building is quite large, it does not have enough space to display his whole collection of glass and crystal, which numbers about 3000 pieces. Bah Humbug it’s almost Christmas again! As the day draws to a close on another Christmas Eve, Ebenezer Scrooge is working in his office and insisting that his clerk, Bob Cratchit, do a full day's work. The office is freezing as Scrooge is too miserly to spend money on fuel. Scrooge's nephew visits to wish him a happy Christmas but still Scrooge remains grumpy and not interested in anything merry ..."Bah Humbug"!

The Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge back to when he was a lonely child at school then revisits his engagement to Belle, who left Scrooge when money replaced her in his heart.

This Christmas, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, TAPAS (The Andalucia Performing Arts Society) presents an all-new and original version of the traditional Christmas tale, 'A Christmas Carol'.

The Ghost of Christmas Future shows Scrooge the misery waiting ahead brought by the death of Tiny Tim and a grave that may be his own. Terrified, Scrooge begs that he be released from this torment, so he can change the future and help set things right.

Later that night Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his dead partner, Jacob Marley. He tells Scrooge that he will be visited by three spirits and to take heed of the messages they bring.

Scrooge wakes determined to change his life. Full of jollity as it is now Christmas morning, he stays true to his vow and from then on it was said that no one kept Christmas like Ebenezer Scrooge.

with TAPAS

The Ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge the happy family life of the Cratchits, despite their poverty and the poor health of their son Tiny Tim.

Full of characters you love, A Christmas Carol is a tale of redemption and the triumph of the human spirit. The production, which incorporates many favourite Christmas Carols sung by the Tapas Choir, is to be performed in December on Friday 7th, Saturday 8th at 8.00 p.m. and Sunday 9th December at 4.00 pm at Los Arcos on the Cartama to Coin road. Tickets are available from the Box Office 635 293 714 and the usual Tapas outlets.

This will be an introduction to the wealth and variety of Chicago’s architecture, its early designers, engineers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright. Chicago is the birthplace of much of what is recognisable as American architecture. After the Great Fire of 1871 necessity brought together the group of designers, architects and engineers now known as the Chicago School, who first perfected the techniques of building high that created the skyscraper. It was also the location for the early work of Frank Lloyd Wright, the leader if not the pioneer of the Prairie School of architects. This school was defined by horizontal lines and over-

hanging eaves, ideals and design aesthetics linked with the Arts and Crafts movement begun in England. The Encyclopaedia of Chicago remarks that whereas other great world cities are distinguished by great cathedrals, royal palaces or government buildings,‘Chicago’s monuments have more often than not been business buildings, houses, schools and churches.’ The lecturer will be Mike Higginbottom BA., M Ed, who has lectured in social and architectural history for the Universities of Nottingham, Birmingham and Keele, the Workers’ Educational Association and the City of Stoke-onTrent. The lecture starts promptly at 16.30 and admission is free to DFAS members. Visitors are welcome and pay â‚Ź10 at the door. ARGO Directed by Ben Aeck Starring: Ben Aeck, Alan Arkin, John Goodman Based on true events, Affleck's well crafted movie tells the tale of the covert operation to rescue six Americans caught up in the Iranian hostage crisis in November 1979. Militants had stormed the US Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 American hostages. The six slipped away and took refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador but faced certain death if discovered. CIA special agent Tony Mendez (Affleck) is called on to conjure up a rescue plan, and comes up with an idea so incredible that it

could only happen in the movies. He works with a Hollywood producer (Arkin) and an Oscar winning make-up artist to create the plot for a fake sci-fi movie project called Argo and bids to convince the Iranians that the six are part of the Canadian film crew. There's a lot of witty Tinseltown satire and some very taut suspense but don't expect Bond or Bourne style thrills and spills. It's a smart and engrossing movie which has generated some Oscar gossip for best film and

best director and Affleck is continuing to demonstrate just how skilful he is behind the camera. It's a portrayal of a super-power under siege and its release strikes a poignant note given that

just a few weeks the US Embassy Beirut was stormed American lives were including that of Ambassador.

Nothing may make any rational sense at the moment and often when that occurs, it is more productive to simply let go and allow things to run their destined course. If you detach and separate from what is occurring, observing your life as if you were watching a movie it may allow you to relax into the new flow. A wake-up call is coming, one that jars you into a greater sense of understanding enabling you to separate fantasy from fact. You will feel unusually spontaneous with your desires being close to the surface, there is probably an air of excitement about you. Any move will not come about without someone questioning your motives and perhaps trying to intercept your steps. You will have such a sense of adventure you are likely to press on anyway, no matter where it all leads and ultimately lands. Embrace these inner feelings and surprise everyone. A strike of clarity hits you this week. You are about to find out who is on your side, who will never fail you or let you down and who will simply not get off their fence. It is far better to go down a path alone than to travel with those that are wishy-washy. Your convictions are strong and the recent full moon has allowed you to feel that inner solidity that will carry your forward. Listen to your hunches and trust your instincts they are spot on. A certain structure that has been set up with regards to a relationship doesn’t appear to be working and you may be having serious thoughts as to how to rectify the situation. For this connection to strengthen and last the way in which you communicate must shift. With a little effort from you both it will positively change the dynamic between you. You may find it hard to identify who and what to trust at the moment. You may have been feeling uptight about a certain situation and will be looking to renegotiate a stronger position. Instead of worrying over what is lacking it may be beneficial to concentrate on what is working and build from there. You could have the opportunity to make advancements in your work place and will receive a lot of attention from those in authority. Hearing any kind of criticism without reacting negatively may be difficult for you but this can help to spur you on.

Something may need to end in order for a larger opportunity to take place and you may have to make a decision for this to occur. However, life is full of surprises and one could come out of nowhere, some miracle you thought would never happen. There is lots of attention and affection coming your way September 23rd - and you could be in for a very romantic weekend. Lady luck is shining down October 22nd on you and all you have to do is ask and it will be granted.

A heaviness that was weighing you down has started to lift, allowing you to soar with the eagles. You have the power to gain great heights and achieve all that you wish for. Things are likely to move fast and you may feel at times that your head is in a whirl.

SAGITTARIUS News and messages could bring the answers to many questions that need resolving. It is likely that the answers you seek are right at your feet or at least within your local environment, sometimes looking too far and wide can make us miss what is already there. PISCES

February 19th March 20th

Actions have consequences and there could be something from the past that has jolted back into your life. Looking back maybe there is a wish that you could have reversed a word or two. Sometimes things simply happen because they have to and even if you can’t see the reason why immediately, in time you realise why. You may get an opportunity to thrash out the events and communications of the past with someone and truths will be revealed on both sides.

Be careful Pisces that this week you do not go too far too soon. Make sure that you stay grounded and when the truth is spoken it will sing in your ears. There are some that are not ready to hear what you have to say and it is important to choose your timing so that your words are effective and do not cause unnecessary provocation that can turn others defensive, defeating your object. Check your facts, keep the big picture in mind and keep smiling.

“How do you say GET in Spanish”

SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

There is no stopping you this week, your enthusiasm, courage and energy are at an all time dynamic high. If there is something in the way of you achieving what you want then you will stop at nothing to achieve your goal and fulfil your dreams. You will find that you can effortlessly swim your way around problems and nothing is too much of a challenge for you. If you expand your view and look at the bigger picture you will see how many opportunities lie at your feet.

Kym’s Kitchen

You know sometimes people ask a question like "How do you say GET in Spanish" Of course, there is no easy answer. Do you mean GET UP; GET DOWN, GET IN, GET OUT, GET OVER, GET AROUND or any of the other, many variations. Well, we have a similar situation with translating many Spanish verbs back to English. The meaning can change depending on the other words used with it and depending on the context. Today we are going to have a look at the verb "acabar" and a few of its common meanings. Acabar basically means to finish. Acabamos el trabajo a las nueve. - We finish work at nine. Ellos acabaron ayer - They finished yesterday. He acabado el libro - I have finished the book. Acabar de means to have just done something. Acabo de leer el nuevo libro de J. K. Rowling - I have just read J. K. Rowling's new book. Acabamos de comprar una casa en el campo - We have just bought a house in the country. Acabaron de llegar cuando empezó la lluvia - They had just arrived when the rain began.

Acabar por means to end up doing something, Acabamos por creerlo - We ended up believing it. Acabó por reconecerle - He ended up recognising him. Acabaron por gastar todo el dinero - They ended up spending all the money.

Acabar mal is to go badly. Todo acabó mal el día de su cumpleaños - Everything went badly on his birthday. Ya se acabó - That's an end to it. It's over is useful when you've heard enough about a subject and don't want to talk about it any more or is also used when the result of something is obvious. Barca ya no puede ganar. Ya se acabó - Barcelona can't win now. It's all over. Ya está - That's it. Se acabó - It's finished Perhaps in two weeks time we should look at the various uses of "get". Your teeth, your health, your quality of life We at the British Dental Clinic have decided – in order to make people living in Spain more aware of their dental health – to release a series of articles about dental health and its effect on your general health and quality of life. In our experience many people still don’t know much about what goes on when they visit a dentist or what is actually going on in their mouth. Going to dentist can be nerveracking for some people because of previous experiences or just fear of the unknown. One of the biggest problems people experience in Spain when going to the dentist is the language difficulty, which makes it even harder for both parties. But this aside, many people still don’t have enough knowledge about their mouth, dental disease, type of dental material being used in their mouth, oral cancer, whether drinking has an effect in the mouth, what is the effect of smoking on their teeth and not talking about their general health. And how often do they need to go to the dentist and why people have to visit their dentist at different intervals? Plus what is a crown? What is a bridge? Why they are having a crown or a bridge suggested by their dentist? Is it really justified? I could go on and on about all these questions and most people don’t have a clue what the answers are! And finally what is an implant? Who can have implant treatment? What are the risks involved? And the most important question is who should be placing an implant for you as a patient? Does the dentist need a separate qualification for placing

and restoring implants? We would also like to give you a chance as a reader of The News to get back to us with your thoughts and questions. So if you have any particular question about your teeth or treatment received, please write to us. I will answer you directly and will also mention various enquiries that we receive in our articles. We are going to start this series of articles from next week, starting with the most common type of dental disease – gingivitis. What is gingivitis and how is treated? We will continue with one subject each week and at the same time try to reflect your questions and thoughts in every article as well. So look out for next week’s article if you want to know more about gum disease. Heartbeat 'could power pacemaker' A device which could harness energy from a beating heart can produce enough electricity to keep a pacemaker running, according to researchers at the University of Michigan. In tests designed to simulate a range of heartbeats, enough electricity was generated to power a pacemaker. The designers now want to test the device on a real heart and build it into a commercial pacemaker. They told a meeting of the American Heart Association that pacemaker batteries needed to be replaced approximately every seven years: "Many of the patients are children who live with pacemakers for many years. You can imagine how many operations they are spared if this new technology is implemented." A spokesman for the British Heart Foundation, said: "Advancing technology over recent years has meant people with pacemakers need to change their battery less often. This device could be another step forward along this path if the researchers can refine the technology and it proves robust in clinical trials."

Sharon Osbourne undergoes surgery but declares “no more cosmetic surgery for me”

Double mastectomy for X Factor judge … and the decision was made after she found she was carrying the cancer gene. X factor judge Sharon Osbourne revealed this week she has undergone 13 hours of surgery for a double mastectomy after finding out she carried a gene that increases the risk of developing breast cancer saying that she “didn’t want to live under that cloud”. Having suffered cancer of the colon some 10 years ago, the wife of Black Sabbath singer Ozzy said: "As soon as I found

out I had the breast cancer gene, I thought: 'The odds are not in my favour'. I decided to just take everything off, and had a double mastectomy." Sharon, 60, refuses to feel sorry for herself adding: “For me, it wasn't a big decision. It was a no-brainer.” Prior to the treatment she also learned that her breast implants had leaked into her

stomach wall, which has now put her off cosmetic surgery for good. She's never been shy about admitting she's gone under the knife, in fact openly discussing her procedures. The rock matriarch is adamant she wants 'no more abuse' against her body after being shocked by recent pictures of herself. Sharon said: 'No more, because I have been looking

Hairy feet and a golden ring When you sit on a plane, ready to take off to visit family and friends or going away on holiday or business, how many of us really listen to the safety instructions. If you look around, most people will be looking at the inflight magazine to see what they can buy on the duty free pages, fiddling with what they need for the journey or will have their nose deeply buried in a book. However, I bet you wouldn’t on Air New Zealand. They have come up with a four-minute-long video celebrating the upcoming Hobbit film featuring a host of actors in full hairy-footed costume together with appearances by Gollum and director Peter Jackson. Within 24 hours of its release, the film went viral

on YouTube and has already had over 2 million hits. However, this is not the first time Air New Zealand has grabbed the attention of in-flight passengers with out-of-the-ordinary videos. In the past they have used the cast of the New Zealand All Blacks Rugby team (now, Tracey, is it worth buying a ticket with them just to have a look?) and a health fitness guru wearing a sequined tank top that probably wasn’t quite so attractive. "Passengers appreciate the light-hearted and entertaining approach we take to delivering important safety information," said Jodi Williams, the airline's head of international marketing. "It's noticeable that on an ANZ flight they sit up and

take notice during the preflight briefing – expectations of this part of the airline journey have certainly been heightened."

Cruise sues Tom Cruise has launched a $50 million (£31 million) defamation lawsuit against US magazine 'Life & Style' over an article which claimed he'd abandoned his daughter Suri following his split with Katie Holmes. The story was published in July, and featured the headline 'Suri in Tears: Abandoned by Her Dad'. Cruise's long-time lawyer Bert Fields called the story 'a disgusting, vicious lie'. A statement from Fields read: “Tom

doesn't go around suing people. He's not a litigious guy. But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he's going to sue. “Having to pay a libel judgment may slow them down. Tom will undoubtedly give the money to charity. He always has.” Cruise split with Holmes, his wife of five years, in June.

Jane Clarke Last weekend I ventured out to the lovely market that we have here on a Sunday morning. We have long been able to park quite safely without being disturbed along the main road which really doesn’t cause a traffic hazzard and also round the back of the La Trocha Commercial Centre. However, last weekend saw the local police giving parking tickets to the cars that had been parked in these two areas. The market is

Coin enjoyed by all nationalities and it would seem that all nationalities have stalls here. In particular, the farmers market in the open- air part is run almost exclusively by local Spanish people who have “huertas” where they grow their own produce and then sell wonderfully fresh veg and bread, together with a variety of hand-made crafts to the people who go to the market. I cannot see what harm the cars were doing that had been parked but I would advise all

David Duff I was facinated by last week’s offering in Ken Campbell’s quite wonderful Stargazing column. It told us all what Halloween really was all about – something I certainly didn’t know before so, thank you very much for that. Also, I had seen in your Outand-About section that there was a Halloween party on up there in your country area where I hadn’t ventured to before so thought I’d give it a try. I’m not quite sure what you lot up there in Coin eat but there were all manner of scarey people wandering around having a thoroughly enjoyable night at your “JK’s” bar. There were ghosts, vampires,

comers to the market in future to make sure you are not parked on the main roads. There is still plenty of parking around but, let’s face it, none of us want to get fined or towed away. I would further urge Coin Council to stop this practice as they are only hurting their own economy and their own residents by being petty just to get a few extra coppers in the coffers – it’s just plainly unnecessary and quite daft!

Benalmadena Costa people with (I assume) makeup showing cut necks with blood dripping plus the odd (very odd!!...) Frankenstein and weirwolf. I would like to say that I had a great time – the drinks were reasonable, the food good and the disco quite marvelous. People I met told me that Coin also does one of the best New Year’s Eve celebrations up in their main square so I have that as a definite trip in my diary for later on in the year. I thought that everything that was worth going to happened down here on the coast but I

couldn’t have been more wrong! Us “townies “ are the ones who apparently “need to get out more” and find out where the real partying happens. I see that there are a couple of Brit restaurants up there too so I shall be visiting “Lainey’s” and “The Olive Tree” in the near future and shall write again to report on my findings so the rest of us can find out all about what is going on up in Coin. I shall also be going to some of the charity auctions and gigs JK’s hold in future. All I can say for now is “AAAGH!” I got away from the vampires.......

Jupiter, the return of the King Look towards the east after about 9.00pm and you will see a very bright ‘star’, this is the planet Jupiter.

T

his is a perfect time to have a look at Jupiter because on December 3rd the Sun, Earth and Jupiter will be in a dead straight line with Earth in the middle, and Jupiter will be at its closest to the Earth until the year 2021 at a ‘mere’ 378 million miles away, or about four times further away than the Sun is!

J

upiter is by far the largest planet in the Solar System; it is over 11 times the diameter of the Earth and could fit over 1300 Earths inside it. It outshines all the stars and is the second brightest of all the planets in the night sky. Only Venus shines brighter, it has a distinct yellow colour to it so it is quite easy to locate.

B

ut unlike the Earth, Jupiter is not made of rock. Instead it is nothing more than a huge ball of mainly hydrogen gas. It has no solid surface so when we look at Jupiter we can only see the tops of the clouds. The clouds form bands running around the planet and are constantly swirling and mixing themselves in winds of over 500 mph.

T The cost of dying is about to get a lot more expensive – Or is it?? From 1st September the rate of IVA (vat) charged by Funeral Directors will rise from 8% to 21% so an average funeral cost here in Spain will be in the region of 4840 €. With an Iberian Funeral Plan you fix the cost of the funeral at today’s price and it is fixed forever, irrespective of how much funeral expenses rise in the future. With guaranteed Plan prices starting from just 2995 €. Do you need to look elsewhere for total peace of mind? • •

• •

• •

Just look at the facts: Iberian have the best plans and plan benefits at the best prices Iberian plans are the only genuine interest free plans if you wish to pay by instalments Iberian do not charge you an additional administration fee Iberian do not have any deferred or final settlement payments at the end of the instalment term Iberian Funeral Plans are fully transferrable to the UK Iberian Funeral Plans cover you throughout the EU and can assist worldwide.

With prices starting at just 2995 € and IVA FREE, less does equal more. Therefore it makes so much sense to protect your loved ones by investing in a guaranteed funeral plan from Iberian. Visit www.iberianfuneralplans.com or simply contact our offices on 952595691 (Malaga) Also located in The UK, Portugal, Canary Islands and Balearics

here are two main bands dividing the surface up into thirds, but closer inspection shows that there are multiple smaller bands orange and brown in colour. No one is really sure why the bands are a different colour to the rest of the planet or why they stay in bands instead of dispersing across the whole surface.

I

n the middle of the southernmost band lies the famous Great Red Spot. The Red Spot has existed for over 400 years ever since Galileo first turned his telescope toward Jupiter and it probably existed a lot longer before then. It is an oval shape 40,000km X 14,000km about three times bigger than the Earth and rotates in an anticlockwise direction. It is believed to be a storm raging in the upper parts of the clouds but why it has remained for so long and why it is red in colour is still a mystery.

J

upiter rotates very quickly indeed; a day on Jupiter lasts for only 10 hours. This rapid spinning has caused it to become flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator by quite a considerable amount. The flattened appearance is very noticeable even through binoculars.

B

ut one of the most interesting things that can be seen with binoculars are Jupiter’s four largest moons Io, Callisto, Ganymede and Europa. Ganymede is the largest moon in the Solar System and is actually bigger than the planet Mercury. The moons appear as tiny points of light in line with Jupiter’s equator but they move quite quickly. If you see them on the first night there may be one moon to the left of Jupiter and three to the right, the next night they will have changed position. If you are lucky you may even get to see two of the moons passing in front of each other in an eclipse or even one or more of the moons popping out from behind Jupiter.

A

gain it was Galileo who in 1610 first discovered the moons so now they are referred to as the Galilean Moons. It was the discovery of these four moons that led Galileo to announce that the Earth was not the centre of the Universe and must be in orbit around the Sun. For his troubles he was arrested, tried by the Church and found guilty of heresy. His punishment was life under house arrest.

T

he four Galilean Moons are not alone though, Jupiter has a family of 67 other moons to boast of although they are all quite small. The fifth moon was only discovered in 1892 and the rest mainly by the Voyager 1 probe that swung past Jupiter in 1979.

T

here have been a total of seven space probes that have swept past Jupiter and each has sent back incredible images and more tantalising information about this very enigmatic world. The moon Europa seems to be completed encased in a crust of ice, but below the ice is a liquid ocean. Excitement is building that this liquid ocean could be home to a world of life. I wonder!

Renault, Caterham JV will revive Alpine brand

Renault and UK sports car maker Caterham Group are forming a joint venture to develop sports cars and plan to launch one model each within four years. The deal will revive Renault's Alpine brand, which ceased production in the 1990s. Caterham will take a 50 percent stake in the Societe des Automobiles Alpine Caterham (SAAC) venture, which will build the cars at Renault's plant in Dieppe in northern France.Renault employs just over 300 people at the Dieppe facility to assemble sportier versions of the brand's car models.

e ‘Iceman’ wins Abu Dhabi thriller McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire on lap 20 with an electrical failure on his car, becomes the eighth different driver to win a race this year. Following Raikkonen home was Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, managing to cut the gap to title rival Sebastian Vettel by only three points to 10. That was following a stunning drive from the pit lane to third by the 24-year-old German who also had two front wing dings on the way.

It was exciting racing from the lights out, through two safety car sessions, to the end. Mark Webber was

Classic cars galore It's been a busy start to the autumn for SOL Classic Car Club. First members were invited on an outing with the Mercedes Club of Cadiz to the picturesque town of El Bosque in Cadiz province where they were treated to a reception at the Town Hall and toured the town in procession, visited a cheese factory and then had a splendid lunch. SOL member Nick Wadham was rather proud of his Rover P4 110, affectionately known as Rosie – as he says 230 miles in a day wasn't bad for a fifty year old! The next outing for members was a picnic at Pinar del Rey, the extensive pine forests near San Roque. This is becoming an annual event in conjunction with the Campo de Gibraltar Classic Car Club and provides a good opportunity for meeting new friends, and examining different cars. Hard to believe after the recent heavy rains that only a few weeks ago the long drought

meant that the picnic had to be cold food only as the barbeque areas were closed because of the fire risk.

And to round off a busy month several members went down to Gibraltar for a meeting of six classic car clubs hosted by the Gibraltar Classic Vehicle Association. Fifty or so cars were placed on a static display in Casement Square, there was a reception at City House with the Mayor and then a parade along Main Street ending up at the GCVA club house on the Straights side of the island before parking again for a late lunch. SOL Classic Car Club was formed in 2003 to promote the interests of classic car enthusiasts along the Costa

and inland. Members hold club nights on the second Wednesday of the month generally followed by a Saturday run, have technical forums, joint events with other clubs and participate in town and village festivals. The club welcomes everyone who loves classic cars and has recently decided to offer “social membership” to any enthusiasts who may not currently have a classic of their own on the road but who may be contemplating buying one in the future – as well as to enthusiasts who may have knowledge and experience in these wonderful old vehicles but, for one reason or another, are now unable to keep one. having one of the most eventful races of his career. He clashed with Maldonado when he squeezed the Williams driver as he overtook him. Maldonado didn’t yield and Webber went spinning off. Webber lost three places but five laps later, halfway through the race, he had another clash, this time with Felipe Massa. Both collisions were

dismissed as racing incidents. However Webber's next clash, this time with his old crashbuddy Grosjean, proved terminal for the Australian's race. Team messages to Raikkonen during the race were met with dismissive comments so typical of the Finn as at one stage he said: "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing," and “leave me alone”. Following his 19th career win, asked as to how he felt at triumphing in a race again, the 'Iceman' simply said: "Not much really." Pressed for a response from the Beeb’s David Coulthard, Raikkonen added: "I'm very

happy for the team. It's been a hard season, not an easy time, but hopefully this gives us more belief. "I hope this can turn the tables and give us many more wins, if not this year then for next year." Team principal Eric Boullier was ecstatic as he said: "Oh my God! Those last few laps were the longest of my life. "This means a lot. It's the reward for everybody at Enstone after a tough three years. I am very happy for everybody at the factory. "We missed out at the start of the season, which was frustrating, so I'm relieved for everybody."

Kimi Raikkonen scored his first Formula One victory for more than three years by taking the chequered flag at the end of an astonishing, incident-packed Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Golf Societies join together for trip to Montecastillo, Jerez N.E.B.S. and C.O.G.S. played a two-day competition at the Montecastillo Golf resort at Jerez, staying in The Montecastillo Hotel. If you ever plan on staying there take plenty of money! Twenty players were drawn according to their handicap ratings into five four balls to make the competition fair. On the first day we played a single Stableford Competition alongside a Ryder Cup format. The second day we played a Texas scramble. It was decided as we were playing early on the second day not to go out for an evening of drinking. No one obeyed the instruction and some players only managed three hours’ sleep. The course was in the best condition possible following the very heavy rains it had sustained and on the journey there you could see how much water was lying in the fields. The

course is very long and does not favour the short hitters. Me being one of them – is that why I came last again?

The results were as follows:Nearest the pin, Ian Brewer, Ian Hold, Adam Robinson and Ian Vaughn. Nearest the pin in two, Charles Randell. Longest drive, Brian Robinson. Brian could not see where his drive landed from the tee, as they played the last hole in the dark, but we could hear his celebrations from the hotel when he found it. The singles competition was as follows. In third place with 29 points Dave Haworth, in second Charles Randell and in first place Ian Vaughn. The Ryder Cup was split into two teams captained by Nig Bowler and Andy Macfarlane. The result was three–two to the Nig Bowler team. The last day’s Texas Scramble with 63 shots

was won by the team comprising of Mark Edmundson, Ian Brewer, Charles Randell and Brian Millwood. All the players travelled into Jerez at night by cab to savour the local bars and restaurants, and all in all everyone had a very enjoyable two days away and consumed a vast quantity of beer followed by several bottles of local port (some a lot more than others). This was very apparent looking at some of the faces on the early morning start tee. Amazingly all the players attended the second day – but some only just! All participants would like to thank Terry Birtles who organised the event and Joe King for supplying some of the prizes. Thanks also to Ian Hold for his cash donation. Thanks also must go to those who supplied the transport there and back. Where shall we go next year? Who knows… Nig Bowler

Lauro Golf Bowls Club Open Competition Played in perfect conditions throughout the competition the Lauro Open was a resounding success, the atmosphere was friendly and the competition intense. It produced some excellent bowling with a few surprises, notably the result in the first round of the men’s singles where Lauro’s Ken Talbot defeated one of the favourites Brian Todd. Ken played some stunning bowls throughout the game. The singles was followed by the triples then the pairs where there was success for Peter and Marlene Brookes from Lauro.

Merson defeated Jesse Sylvia heads-up to win the title. Sylvia, 26, took home $5,295,149 for his runner-up result. With the win, Merson became the first player since Chris Ferguson in 2000 to win a preliminary WSOP bracelet and the Main Event in the same year. His two bracelets in 2012 also pushed him past Phil Hellmuth as the 2012 WSOP Player of the Year. Merson's incredible story is one of perseverance and determination. Earlier this year, Merson was recovering from a drug relapse that occurred after his career was stripped away from him on

Black Friday. Months later, after refocusing his efforts on poker, he won his 1st bracelet in a WSOP Event, the $10,000 six-handed no-limit hold'em event for $1.1 million. Now nearly 11 months clean, Merson has joined the likes of Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Stu Ungar, and Hellmuth himself in the elite class of World Series of Poker Main Event champions. Merson won this event with a strong selective aggressive style which amateur players should take note of. He never entered a uncontested pot without raising and was not afraid to

3 & 4 bet if he thought the other player was weak. The strong part of his game – and that of any good player – is ability to fold, never chasing draws by flat calling but raising or folding if he felt he was way behind. This selective aggressive play paid off in so many hands. So tip of the day from this is – if you feel the other player is weak be aggressive by raising, on the other hand if you feel he has a strong hand fold and wait for a better spot.

The 24-year-old from Laurel, Md., bested a field of 6,598 to collect the top prize of $8,531,853 and the coveted WSOP Main Event bracelet. McLeish backs Strachan for Scotland job Alex McLeish has tipped Gordon Strachan to succeed Craig Levein as Scotland manager after distancing himself from a return to the role. Levein was sacked on Monday following a poor start to Scotland's 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign. McLeish, who led Scotland to seven wins in 10 games in 2007, said: "Gordon could be the guy to galvanise them. Strachan, a former Scottish international, has managed Coventry City, Southampton and Celtic.

Poulter has not had a winless season since 2008, and he ensured that run continued with an eightbirdie, one-bogey display, seeing off the challenge of two-time winner Phil Mickelson. Overnight leader Lee Westwood’s title bid faded with a double bogey at the par-3 fifth and evaporated completely with three bogeys on the back nine. Mickelson was right in contention, however, and when Poulter had his only bogey of the day at the 17th, he closed to just one shot playing in the group behind. Poulter then found sand with his second to the 18th, and it looked like a US-Europe

Ryder Cup style play-off could be on the cards. But Mickelson found a disastrous lie between two bunkers with his tee shot on the par-3 17th, then failed to make the green with his second. Poulter chipped to about eight feet on the 18th, Mickelson bogeyed 17, and Poulter held his nerve to hole out and win by two shots. “I knew if I did the right things and stayed patient, I’d be right there at the end, so it’s great to get the win,” said Poulter, who won the WGCAccenture World Matchplay in 2010. His previous best at a strokeplay WGC event was joint second in the 2006 Cadillac Championship. “Looking at where Louis (Oosthuizen)was after two days, he was so far out in front, but I knew there was a good round of golf out on that golf course. “I did know the situation (with Mickelson), it was a huge birdie I got on 15 (an impressive 12-foot putt to maintain the gap). “On the last I just tried to stay out the water, my short game’s been good and I felt I could make the up and down. As well as the trophy, Poulter gets his hands on US$1.2 million.

Britons golden girls sign for Wiggo’s team Britain's Olympic track champions (pictured L to R) Dani King, Laura Trott and Jo Rowsell have joined a women's road team backed by Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins. The new DTPC (Dream Team Pro Cycling) Honda Team will receive funding from Wiggins's Wiggo Foundation. "Wiggins's support will further enable the girls to fulfil their potential out on the road," read a team statement. Trott won the six-discipline omnium in the London 2012 velodrome and partnered King and Rowsell to team pursuit gold. The 20-yearold, who also rode to 2012 world championship gold in the team pursuit with King, 21, and 23-year-old

Rowsell, said: "I'm excited and look forward to being part of what I believe will be one of the most professional and most successful teams next year. "I'm looking forward to gaining more experience on the road with such a great team." DTPC, which will be registered in Britain, is owned and managed by Australia's Commonwealth champion Rochelle Gilmore, who will also ride on the team. Britain's Elinor Barker, the junior world time-trial champion, has also signed for the team, along with her Welsh compatriot Amy Roberts and Italy's twotime world champion Giorgia Bronzini.

Malaga suffer first home defeat Malaga 1 - 2 Rayo Vallecano With the Champions League coming up (played last night) it was another Saturday kick off on a damp afternoon for Malaga. Malaga started slowly and just didn't have a spark about them, maybe one eye on Milan or the lack of forthcoming wages. On 10 minutes Malaga were one down, Leo Baptistao turned Weligton brilliantly to cross for Piti to fire home.
