Government calls temporary halt to evictions The suicide of a woman in Barakaldo in the Basque Country last Friday has spurred Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to call for a two-year moratorium. Amaya Egaña jumped to her death from the fourth floor of her apartment block as local court officials and a locksmith arrived to evict her. It was the second such suicide – in late October a man facing eviction in Granada also committed suicide.

TOLERANCE ART
Why not visit the Glass Museum in Malaga? A treasure trove of fine arts in a beautifully restored building.
The International Black and White Association’s exhibition of The Day of Tolerance art is showing in Fuengirola. Artists featured include Bulgaria’s Valentin Kovatcher.
They have to be kidding! I was in my car the other day listening to the radio and the announcer said that a department in the uK is going to be banning a lot of the classic children’s books, such as Peter Pan, because they stereotype the rôle of little girls and they’re worried that said little girls will be unduly influenced by the books. What planet do these idiots come from? They have assumed that girls don’t have any kind of a brain in their heads and that, because Wendy in Peter Pan clutches a dolly and flies off all over the

place, they’re all going to be unduly upset if they can’t do that themselves. What utter tosh! When I was a little girl (and yes, once upon a time I really was one) I went to very good schools where we read pretty much all of the classics we could get our hands on. I did not turn into any kind of a “Wendy” figure nor a Bunty or Judy girl from the comics because, guess what, most little girls grow up and move on to things called careers or, if they so choose, not having an outside job and running a family and home. So I would say to these idiots thinking of banning these books, grow up and look around at the very capable women around you that are there despite reading these books.
The Socialists want all evictions to be suspended indefinitely while the banks study pending evictions case by case – the government wants to protect “the most vulnerable”. This would include families with children where one or both parents are on the dole, those who only own one property and have nowhere else to go and families looking after a chronically ill member.

Justice Minister Alberto RuizGallardon said on Monday he was planning a total reform of the current mortgage law “which will not be weighted in favour of the banks”.
At press time on Tuesday the talks had run into a second day but both the government and the Socialists said at the end of a meeting lasting seven hours on Monday that considerable progress had been made.

Prestige oil spill trial opens The trial of three people accused of causing one of Europe’s worst oil spills opened in La Coruña on Tuesday, just under ten years after the event. The captain of the Prestige oil tanker, Apostolos Mangouras, his chief engineer and the former head of the merchant marine department are being held responsible for spilling 60,000 tonnes of crude oil into the Atlantic off Cape Finisterre.
The spill caused an estimated €3.9 billion in damages, according to court documents. The Spanish state is asking for more than €2 billion in compensation from the ship's insurers, and France is also claiming damages.
Mangouras, who is pleading not guilty, faces a jail sentence of 12 years if he is convicted of environmental crimes. Seventy lawyers and 1,500 victims of the oil spill are seeking up to $5 million in damages, and more than 100 witnesses will be testifying.
The judges have 280,000 pages of evidence to sift through and the trial is expected to last at least a year. Key issues include the ship’s seaworthiness and the authorities’ refusal to allow it to sail into a safe harbour.
Lawyers have been investigating the accident for eight years, and it has taken another two years to get to trial. The Prestige ran
into trouble during a heavy storm on November 13th, 2002. It was flooded by water and began to leak and sank six days later. Prime Minister at the time Jose Maria Aznar ordered the tanker to be towed away from the Spanish coast instead of following an
expert-prepared contingency plan that called for the ship to be brought closer to shore where the spill could be confined, which is what the captain had wanted to do. Authorities in Spain, France and Portugal refused to allow the vessel into port and it was being
dragged away into the Atlantic when it broke up. Fuel washed up on beaches across northern Spain and parts of France, ruining local fishing grounds. Volunteers arrived from across the country to help army units clear up the mess left on northern beaches.

Mother and daughter found dead Police in Astorga, León found the bodies of an elderly woman and her disabled daughter last Friday, after neighbours reported a bad smell in the building’s hallway. Investigators said the women had been dead for four days but ruled out an accident or an assault by third parties as the cause of death. They said Marta Pajarón Ferrero, 82, died of natural causes and her daughter, María del Mar Viñolo Pajarón, aged 40,

Iberia to cut 4,500 jobs British airways-owner IaG has announced 4,500 job cuts at Iberia as part of a widely anticipated restructuring of the spanish carrier. Iberia is cutting its 156-strong fleet by 25 aircraft, and reducing 15% of its network capacity, with the airline focusing on the most profitable routes. The 4,500 job losses are not as steep as the 7,000 figure that reportedly had been expected by the airline's unions.

IaG said the restructuring would safeguard 15,500 posts at the airline. The airline also hopes to negotiate a 47 per cent salary cut with the pilots’ union. Iberia has been suffering record losses, and its woes in part stem from the weakness of the eurozone economy, including a sharp downturn in its home market.

Marijuana plantations financed Serb mafia The police have dismantled a network that financed the so-called Zemun clan in serbia through marijuana plantations. They arrested 25 people and seized some 700 marijuana plants growing in greenhouses and in the open air. The biggest plantation was found in a house in las Palmas where the ideal climatic conditions had been reproduced. The other two were open air plantations in the island’s rural areas. The police also seized €840,000 in cash and valuable watches and jewellery in two bank safety boxes.

Tax on high-fat foods to go
The Pentagon is investigating the top US commander in Afghanistan, General John Allen, for sending potentially "inappropriate" emails to a woman linked to ex-CIA director David Petraeus, Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said on Monday. The FBI referred the matter to the Pentagon on Sunday. General Allen, who denies any wrongdoing, will remain in his job. He is said to have sent the emails to Jill Kelley, a married socialite from Tampa, Florida.
She had already been named in the Petraeus scandal after she told the FBI she had received anonymous harassing emails. Mrs Kelley is said to have received threatening emails from Paula Broadwell, the woman with whom Mr Petraeus had an extramarital affair. David Petraeus resigned on Friday after admitting to the affair. Mr Panetta said he has asked that General Allen's pending nomination to be Nato's
supreme allied commander in Europe be delayed and that President Barack Obama had agreed.
the government has said it intends to abolish a tax on foods which are high in saturated fats. introduced a little over a year ago, it was believed to be the world's first so-called "fat tax". Foods containing more than 2.3% saturated fat – including dairy produce, meat and processed foods – were subject to the tax, but the authorities now admit it had inflated food prices and put danish jobs at risk.
He has also requested that the US Senate Armed Services Committee move promptly on the nomination for General Allen's successor in Afghanistan, General Joseph Dunford. A

Man bailed over 'royal attack plan' in New Zealand A man has been bailed by a New Zealand court for allegedly planning to attack the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, who are in New Zealand on a seven-day Diamond Jubilee tour. Sam Bracanov was charged with planning to throw horse manure at the visiting royals. The 76year-old "known anti-royalist" was ordered to stay at least 500 yards away from the royal couple as part of his bail conditions. Bracanov was ordered to re-appear
at the Auckland District Court later this month. Police said he was detained on Monday about an hour before the couple arrived at Auckland quayside to meet wellwishers. Bracanov was convicted and fined for spraying air fresheners at Prince Charles to "remove the stink of royalty" during a previous visit to Auckland in 1994. A

Funded by the World Bank and Uk, families would reportedly get $2 a month per child in school. Bid to ban bride-price payments the government plans to ban bride-price payments, legalise polygamy and consider couples co-habiting for more than six months to be legally married. the proposals have been approved by the cabinet, but will not become law until passed by parliament. the decision to stop the age-old custom of bride price is one of the most contentious proposals aimed at harmonising the nation's marriage laws. Current customary law stipulates that a marriage is not considered legal unless a bride price has been paid, usually in the form of cows. even couples married in a religious or civil ceremony are often not recognised by their families as being in a binding relationship unless a payment is made.

Argentina to seek help over ship seizure Foreign Minister Hector Timerman said on Monday that Argentina will ask the International Sea Tribunal, based in Germany, to intervene in the dispute over its navy ship impounded in Ghana. The Libertad was stopped from leaving Ghana last month following a local court order obtained by US hedge fund NML Capital, which argues it is owed
$370 million as a result of Argentina's $100 billion debt default a decade ago. It is seeking $20m in return for the release of the ship, a three-masted training vessel. Argentina has vowed not to bow to what it calls "blackmail by vulture funds". The Libertad has been detained in the main seaport town of Tema since October 2nd. Only a skeleton crew remains after
more than 300 sailors flew home about three weeks later. Sailors on board the Libertad reportedly pulled guns on Ghanaian officials last week after they tried to board the vessel to move it to another berth. Water and electricity had reportedly been shut off to the ship a few days earlier in response to Argentina's refusal to let officials move the ship to a less busy part of the port.
Greece gets more time on budget targets Eurozone finance ministers meeting in Brussels agreed on Monday to give Greece two more years, until 2016, to meet its deficitreduction targets. However they delayed a decision on releasing the latest €31.5 billion tranche of bailout funds. Greek PM Antonis Samaras has warned that
without the new funds Greece will run out of money within days. The €31.5 billion tranche will first have to be approved by some national parliaments, including Germany's. Greece had been pushing for the funds after passing a tough budget for 2013, including further cuts to pensions
and wages, in a vote on Sunday night. More than 10,000 people joined demonstrations outside Greece's parliament on Sunday to protest against the cuts. The finance ministers will meet again to discuss releasing the latest instalment of bailout funds on November 20th.

When is a sale not a sale? Failed electrical retail giant Comet had announced a “massive stock liquidation” sale ahead of closing their stores. However, customers who rushed to the stores are angry about discounts only being in the region of 10 to 15% and have taken to Twitter and other social networking sites to vent their anger. Scott Houston said: "Comet 'Firesale' is no more than 10-15% off. Prices aren't even competitive with online prices. Time wasted." And Matt Arthur tweeted: "Anyone thinking of going to the Comet 'liquidation sale', don’t bother. 10% off audiovisual, 20% off kitchen appliances, still cheaper online." Ajay Deshpande added: "If you
are looking for cheap electrical goods then don't go to the Comet 'sale'!" The sale that started at 9am last Thursday was only available instore and not to online customers. Also, the previous suspension of any gift vouchers people were holding was lifted so that they could buy sale items. Administrator Deloitte announced: "The discounts are gentle. It's not a hard sale." They have said that there will be no refunds on anything purchased although one assumes that they will have to honour “not fit for purpose” legislation. Deloitte are in the process of winding down the business following its collapse on Friday, which leaves 6,600 jobs hanging
in the balance. But rival Dixons, which owns Currys and PC World, postponed hiring 3,000 Christmas staff by a week to allow Comet staff to apply, saying it was "amazed" by the number of Comet employees who had enquired about positions so far. Deloitte is attempting to find a buyer for the business and would not comment on speculation over store closures – although reports suggest stores could start to be closed next week. If the chain does collapse, it will become one of the biggest high street casualties since Woolworths in 2008.
BBC finds itself in meltdown yet again Britain’s national broadcaster the BBC appears to be tearing itself apart following the Jimmy Savile sex abuse allegations and problems with the corporation’s flagship Newsnight programme. George Entwistle has now resigned as Director General after just 54 days in the post and there is furore over the decision to provide him with a year’s salary of £450,000 in lieu of notice. His contract stated six months severance pay for the time he had been in the job.
The BBC Trust said the award reflected the continued involvement Mr Entwistle was expected to have in various BBC inquiries now under way. The BBC recently came under scrutiny again after the Newsnight programme wrongly implicated former Conservative Party Treasurer Lord McAlpine in a children’s home scandal of the 1970s and 1980s. All eyes are now on chairman of the BBC Trust, Lord Patten, who has been left to pick up the pieces.

His task is to put in place a framework to rebuild confidence in the broadcaster. It is a task that will not be made any easier by the British media generally. There is now a strong feeling that the broadcaster requires dramatic overhaul to make it fit for purpose. The new acting Director General is Tim Davie and few would dispute that he faces a big challenge.

Remember Britain fell silent to remember her war dead as the Queen and members of the Royal Family led the nation at the Cenotaph in Whitehall. A large crowd was swelled by 10,000 veterans this year as Armistice Day coincided with Remembrance Sunday. And while the last of the Great War generation have now gone, new names are added to the roll as servicemen continue to be killed in more recent conflicts. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall marked Remembrance Sunday in New Zealand. Prince Harry is currently serving in Afghanistan.

Baby boom The biggest baby boom in Britain in 40 years is expected and it has been fuelled by immigration, with more than a quarter of births in England and Wales being to mothers born abroad. According to the Royal Collage of Midwives more than 700,000 babies will be born this year, the highest number since 1971. A spokeswoman said the service had carried shortages for many year but with the number of births continuing to rise they were at the limit of what could be safely delivered.

Terror suspect wins latest appeal Despite UK Home Secretary Theresa May’s best efforts, terror suspect Abu Qatada will be released from jail after the Special Imigration Appeals Commission’s (SIAC) Mr Justice Mitting granted him bail following his latest in a long line of appeals against deportation to Jordan from the UK.
who is accused of serious crimes in his home country of Jordan." Adding that she believed Mr Justice Mitting applied the "wrong legal test" in finding in Qatada's favour, she said: "It is deeply unsatisfactory that Abu Qatada has not already been deported to Jordan." Qatada was convicted of terror charges in Jordan in his absence in 1999. The Middle East country has given the Home Secretary assurances that no evidence gained through torture will be used against him. But the SIAC judges said they could not be sure this would be the case.
The radical cleric – branded Osama Bin Laden’s right-hand man – will be subject to a 16 hour curfew to stay within his home but that means he will be allowed onto the streets of the UK from 8am until 4pm daily once he is released from maximum security jail HMP Long Lartin. He will also be required to wear an electronic tag and has been banned from contacting certain named people, although he will have access to a computer.
Qatada, who is said to have wide and high-level support among extremists, featured in hate sermons found on videos in the flat of one of the September 11th bombers. He has challenged and ultimately thwarted every attempt by the Government over the last decade to put him on a plane, which is thought to have cost at least £420,000 in legal aid alone.
Home Secretary Theresa May has vowed that the Government will continue to fight to "get rid" of him as soon as possible. She said: “Abu Qatada is a dangerous man, a suspected terrorist,
Three SIAC judges, including Justice Mitting, ruled that evidence from his former co-defendants Abu Hawsher and Al Hamasher, said to have been obtained by torture, could possibly be used against him in a retrial. Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper backed plans to appeal against the "extremely serious and worrying judgement ". Ms. Cooper went on to say: "The Home Secretary needs to say urgently what she is now doing to get Abu Qatada's deportation back on track and to keep the public safe in the meantime. We cannot have any more mistakes that simply leave the public at risk." Qatada's solicitor Gareth Peirce said: "We clearly agree with the decision, but it is important to emphasise the fundamental rules of law that we subscribe to. To that extent, it is important for other cases, not just for this case."

Clarkson slams BBC for being “astonishingly stupid” The controversial front man of ITV’s Top Gear programme always observes the Remembrance Day’s two minutes silence which happened to fall on Sunday morning this year. Before the silence began he had already tweeted “In a car? Well get ready to pull over and stop.” The BBC tweet that went out at 11:01am, right in the middle of the two minutes silence read: “Mostwatched vid on #TopGear this week? Behind-thescenes at TG mag’s pan-American race between a Bentley... and a train,” it read. The show's host Jeremy Clarkson was angered by the misjudged timing, replying: “@BBC_TopGear You sent this out during the two minute silence. Astonishingly stupid." The remark was then retweeted more than 600 times. Other fans waded in
with their criticism too. But they equally appreciated Clarkson’s reaction with one tweeting: “Well done on observing #2MinutesTwitterSilence, your tweet was so important!” said @tjsaul. Those running the account at the BBC have now said sorry, adding that the publishing of the tweet was automated. “We profusely apologise for the

Metro plagued by Dangerous dog law demands for damages tightened The Metro de Malaga has received more than a thousand demands for damages since construction began in 2006, of which only 20 per cent have recognised. The most common demands refer to cracks in the walls of private homes and business premises, but a number refer to the noise made by the heavy machinery used in the works.
Fuengirola town council has approved an updated version of the regulation governing the ownership of pets, especially potentially dangerous dogs. The national law on potentially dangerous dogs allows for a leash of up to two metres. Nationwide, potentially dangerous dogs must be registered with the local town hall and the owner must pass a phychiatric assessment to obtain a licence.
The dogs cannot be walked anywhere near places frequented by children, such as parks and schools and must always wear a muzzle in public. The national law specifies eight breeds: the American Pit Bull terrier, the Staffordshire Bull terrier, the American
Staffordshire terrier, the Rottweiler, the Argentine Dogo, the Brazilian Fila, the Tosa Inu and the Akita Inu. The Junta de Andalucia added four more breeds to the list in February 2008: the Bull Terrier, the Presa Canario, the Napolitan Mastiff and the Boxer.

Cádiz ready for Ibero American summit The residents of Europe’s oldest inhabited city - founded by the Phoenicians some 3,000 years ago - are beginning to sigh with relief.
It’s not just any summit and this is not just any year for Cadiz, chosen to host the event to mark the 200th anniversary of the Constitution of Cadiz. For two days, the King and Queen will be in attendance, with heads of government of Spain and Portugal and all the South American countries – with the exception of Cuba, Argentina and Venezuela – all accompanied by several ministers. Aside from the importance of the visitors, the event will fill the coffers of local hotels, inns, hostals and restaurants not only in the city, which is located at the end of an isthmus, but also in the towns on the other side of the bay. Tight security has been in place since Monday, with parking in many areas of the city banned for mere mortals. And during the two days the summit lasts, pedestrians will also be barred from many areas. The city council has installed a free phone line for residents wanting to know where they can or cannot walk or park. However, most residents feel all the fuss and bother are worthwhile, given the historical importance of the Cádiz Constitution of 1812. "It was legendary even though it was only in effect for a few years, because it set two precedents that formed the basis of the liberal political system: national sovereignty and the division of powers," according to Emilio La Parra, a professor of contemporary history at Alicante University. "It cannot be said that it was the beginning of democracy because it did not recognise everybody's political rights: not women's, not indigenous people's, not blacks' and not slaves'; but it is probably one of our legal texts of reference."

Schoolkids can’t do their sums a report by the andalucian Education assessment agency has revealed that only 75 per cent of the region’s secondary schoolchildren have an educational level “high enough to enable them to find work or undertake higher training” when they leave school. The junta de andalucia’s Education department has described the report as “alarming”. The report found that that the weakest subjects were mathematics and science and the strongest was verbal communication. it said one of the factors in the schoolchildren’s poor performance was the “brusque” change from primary school – with smaller classes and more individualised attention – to secondary school, where the classes are larger.

General strike creates jobs The manager of adivin, a company that produces flags, said last week that because of the demand for flags for the November 14th general strike, he had had to hire 13 more workers and introduce night shift work. juan antonio Moreno said something similar had happened just before the last general strike in March, although he noted that the unions appeared to be more organised this time and placed their orders well ahead of the date. The company is the biggest flag maker in Spain and produced flags for the regional elections in the Basque Country and Galicia. it is also producing “independentista” flags for the Catalan regional election on November 25th.

ith President Obama reelected to a second term last week, US economic policies as well as a job stimulus programme will be the main focus for the next four years. It is also expected that the US president will try to strengthen his ties with European leaders to help them get back on the road to economic recovery. During his first term, Obama sent off a team of mercenaries – most notable his Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton – to try to convince European officials to move ahead, and move fast, with reforms that would lead to a more solid central banking system as well revamp economic aid mechanisms for all member states. While it welcomed the United States’ concern, Europe also appreciated that Washington wasn't getting too much involved in European policies. But that could all change.
f there were a Nobel Prize for cynicism, Spanish banks would win it hands down.
ast Friday, the tragic incident of a woman committing suicide as the bailiffs knocked on her door spurred Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to action – and not before time. There have been thousands of evictions since the property boom went bust and they were increasing daily until last Friday when Rajoy announced that he hoped to have proposals in place by this Monday that would put all evictions on hold for a couple of years.
B
y Sunday evening, just about every bank in the country revealed that they had been thinking along the same lines for some time and had been on the verge of making an announcement. What a coincidence! The truth of the matter is that they have finally realised just how much the average man and woman in the street hates them. But it’s taken weeks of protesters scrawling “asesinos” (murderers) on the facades of banks across the country for the message to get home.
R
ajoy’s statement almost started off a revolution, with mayors across the country banning evictions in their territory or forbidding the local police forces to take part in them. “Insubordination”, shrieked interior minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz, threatening that police who obeyed that order would be punished. I suspect the police would have ignored his threat, if it hadn’t been for the fact that evictions have ceased altogether – and about time too.
S
ome will say that you shouldn’t borrow beyond your means, but we have to remember that the Spanish people were poorer than dirt poor for decades and when the banks rushed to satisfy their dearest desire – to own their own homes – they can’t be blamed for seizing the chance. When I arrived here in October 2002, the banks were literally throwing money at people – to buy cars or homes or whatever – and issuing credit cards as if they were mere bits of paper with no strings attached. Then the building boom came to an abrupt end, unemployment started to rise with a vengeance and the banks began to realise that they just might not get all that money back. So they started evicting – and ended up with thousands of properties and very few buyers. Serves them right.
H
opefully, the government will seize this opportunity to put the banks firmly in their place and make them return to the days of managing people’s money honestly – not speculating with it. Or am I being a cock-eyed optimist again!
Getting it so wrong
A
couple of weeks back most of the national newspapers published a piece about Crown Prince Felipe shaking the hands of a Romanian beggar woman, under the impression that she was an admirer when she held out her hand to him as he left the San Francisco de Borja church in Madrid after a funeral service. Most of the papers sneered, implying that the prince lived in cloud cuckoo land and couldn’t recognise a beggar when he saw one. I chose not to publish it in The News because we don’t have much space and anyway, I thought it was irrelevant.
T
his week, one of the papers had the decency to set the record straight. In fact the woman was a Spanish flower seller who couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw the prince so close. She told the paper: “I was standing in the church doorway when the prince came out. I said ‘Good evening, your Excellency’. He looked at me and I said ‘May God bless you, Prince, you’re very guapo (handsome)’. And we laughed together as he shook my hand.” The Europa Press news agency started the story rolling and I’ll be careful about the news items I take from it in future.
T
he newspapers committed another gaffe on National Day. The military parade took place just a couple of days after Education Minister Jose Ignacio Wert upset the Catalans by saying his mission was to “hispanicize” Catalan schoolchildren, meaning he wanted them to be proud of being both Spanish and Catalan. The Catalan separatists accused him of wanting to eliminate the Catalan language and culture, just like Franco had. Anyway, when King Juan Carlos spoke to Mariano Rajoy at the end of the parade, some eager lip readers claimed he was chiding him about Wert’s statement. Not so. He was actually talking about someone else, as the Royal Household was quick to explain afterwards. But the daily newspapers didn’t pick up the denial. Being a weekly, we did, so The News once again didn’t put its foot in it.
W
T
hroughout the US campaign, the economic situation in Spain was referred to by the two top candidates on more than a dozen occasions in interviews, addresses and debates – most of the time the references were negative. But just days before the vote, President Obama said in an interview with a Spanish radio network based in Colombia that "We cannot allow Spain to become unravelled." If Spain were to fall so would the rest of Europe dragging the US economy along, he said. Although the president didn't give any indications how Washington might be able to help Spanish officials or the rest of its European partners from this point on, it is clear that the president and his advisors won't sit back idly and wait for Brussels to come up with all the answers. They did this for four years and found themselves in a dead-heat race with a strong Republican contender who did nothing but chastise the Obama administration's handling of the domestic economy. Although Mitt Romney pledged to work more closely with Europe to finding solutions to help forge a stronger bridge between the financial systems in two continents, he offered no specific details.
O
n the list are two major projects coming out of the United States that will no doubt help Spanish regions that are suffering the most from high unemployment, stagnation and low consumer confidence. The first, a co-operation agreement, signed last year by Prime Minister José Luis
Rodríguez Zapatero and NATO officials, will lead to the beefing up of the Rota airbase in Cádiz, where US troops have been stationed for decades. It will become a major component of Washington and NATO’s controversial defence shield to protect the continent from incoming missiles from Iran and North Korea. According to the plan, the US military will bring in four Arleigh Burke (DDGs) missile destroyers and some 1,100 additional servicemen and women by 2014. The base at Cadiz is already home to about 3,000 military personnel, 250 US civilian workers and employs an additional 1,250 Spaniards, according to the Globalsecurity.com website. Spanish officials say that the defence shield activities will help boost at least some 20,000 indirect jobs in the area.
T
he second majority activity coming from the other side of the pond is no doubt Sheldon Adelson's EuroVegas mega casino project that he hopes to begin building next year on the outskirts of Madrid. With the exception of the Partido Popular (PP) which governs the region as well as the city, the proposed complex has come under fire from all the other parties, which see it becoming a lawless venture, as well as environmentalists, who fear protectionist laws will be changed to suit Adelson. The Las Vegas Sands CEO has already met with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and reports that the Spanish government will inform him in January which laws it intends to change entirely to make his project work. What Adelson wants – but may not get – is to relax the tax, migration and anti-tobacco laws to benefit his clients and employees. This of course is all a private venture but it comes from a multi-millionaire US investor who promises to create some 200,000 indirect and indirect jobs over the next eight years, if we are to believe his projections. Nevertheless, anything will help boost the economy, whether you believe in gambling, gaudy buildings and overpriced shows or not.
A
lthough the Sheldon project and the NATO defence shield might not look like anything Washington has in mind when the Obama administration talks about helping to fix Spain, they are indeed ventures – albeit, polar opposites – that can help more than hurt the frail economy.

Report on Denise Walker’s Sri Lanka bird and butterfly conservation tour In October of this year, well known local lady Denise Walker joined a trip to Sri Lanka, and what a wonderful time she had. Over the next couple of weeks you will be able to read her report on her visit and we hope you can enjoy it just a little bit as much as she obviously did. Sri Lanka – a third world country with first class people, wildlife and Buddhist monuments. The Journey from Heathrow to Colombo was a relaxed 10 hour flight with Emirates (6 hours to Dubai then 4 hours from Dubai to Colombo). Emirates is really my favourite airline with plenty of leg room in economy class, individual entertainment screens allowing us to watch the latest films, play games or listen to a wide variety of music and delicious inflight food. The tour group of seven people were met at the airport by a smiling Tharanga (our guide) and Pradeep (assistant guide), who proved to have
extensive spotting ability and knowledge on the wildlife we were to encounter. We soon travelled out of the dreary sprawl of Colombo into open country with lush roadside vegetation, exotic trees and numerous fresh water lakes. I won’t bore you with the unpronounceable names of villages and towns we passed, suffice it to say we headed south to near Ratnapura. Our eyes never wandered from the windows as we meandered along in our airconditioned, bigger-thanaverage minibus. We passed colourful roadside stalls displaying huge bunches of small very sweet bananas, papayas, mangoes and pineapples. Everywhere there were sights and sounds to keep our senses occupied – gaudy peacocks strutted sedately through the fields and toque macaque monkeys eyed us cautiously from the trees. Electrocuted cat-size fruit bats hung like brown paper
Blue Magpie bags from the two parallel electric power lines, realising too late that it wasn’t a good place to roost. Although there seemed to be petrified fruit bats every 50 metres, this doesn’t impact on their population. Motorbikes, carrying the whole family clinging precariously to the framework, the very common family tuk tuks, buses and lorries all weaved in and out of each
other. From children to the elderly, all going about their daily chores were never too busy to give us a cheery wave (unlike the children in Uganda who threw stones at the bus). Immaculately turned out children trooped to school in pristine white dresses or shirts and the girls wore ties – not a hoody in sight. We shall hear more about Denise’s trip next week.

Safety first Nervous about parking at Mercadona or La Trocha? Don’t like shopping alone? Not surprising after the recent series of robberies in such places! The Coin Branch of the Royal British Legion has invited Allan Davies, an expert in personal protection, to speak at their social meeting at the Miralmonte Bar and Restaurant on Wednesday the 21st of November. Allan

is going to talk about and demonstrate a few simple techniques, together with some do’s and don’ts, to help people go about their business with more confidence. In an attempt to reach a wider audience this meeting is open to everyone. At the end, Allan will give details of short courses on personal protection that he runs in the local area. Come along and discover how to visit public places with confidence. You can find Miralmonte on the A404 road between Coin and Alhaurin el Grande.

When I first came to live in Spain and work as an Independent Financial Adviser, Equity Release Schemes were the ‘all singing, all dancing’ solution to the Spanish Inheritance Tax problem for expats who own a property in Spain. Not only did they in most cases completely erase the tax liability, they also offered retired expats the ability to boost their income by taking equity out of their Spanish property to spend as they wished. ‘The Reality...’ Upon completing my research as an experienced and qualified Adviser and ex financial services trainer, it quickly became apparent to me that these schemes were fine for as long as there were no dips in the stock market along the way, or worse still a ‘worldwide financial crisis’! Having done the number crunching, I could not see the viability of taking retired people from a ‘mortgage free’ and ‘financially secure’
situation to a situation where they were again at the mercy of a lender. I therefore took the decision not to recommend this solution to my clients. ‘Today...’ The harsh reality now is that there are many retirees who feel trapped, embarrassed, and unable to talk to their family about this situation – feeling ashamed, having fallen foul to the aggressive marketing techniques often used to secure this type of business. At Speed Financial Solutions, we take the care of our expat community very seriously and are already working for people who have approached us, unable to sleep well at night for fear of losing everything they have spent their lives working for. ‘What can be done ...?’ We have teamed up with a prominent lawyer in Marbella and are working together to put our expats back into a mortgage free position on the following basis: Civil court action with a view to obtaining a ruling that
Pet of the Week
declares both the mortgage loan agreement and the investment contract, null and void. The claim is to be based on the allegation that the contracts entered into were tainted with so many defects that, by applying Spanish laws on the matter (financial, banking and consumer laws), would render them void from the very beginning. This includes two false concepts deliberately used to sell the products: 1. That by registering a mortgage loan against the property, it would reduce its value for Inheritance Tax purposes. 2. That by investing the proceeds of the loan in a certain way, they would perform well enough to support the cost of the loan
(interest, commissions) and leave extra money, for personal use. Do you find yourself in this position, not knowing which way to turn? Have you spoken to your Financial Adviser and are they helping you find solutions? If you would like a free private consultation please contact us for an appointment. Alternatively, every Friday we run a surgery in our office in Coin from 10 am until 1 pm when our Financial Advisers will be available to discuss your own situation. Please see www.speedfinancialsolution s.com or contact us on Tel 951 315 271/951 318 529 email admin@speedfinancialsoluti ons.com .

Pepe was found after having been on his own for two weeks on a golf course. It is unsure if he became lost after the big fire. However, having no microchip his owners could not be traced. We have therefore taken this lovely boy into our FAMA shelter for adoption. He has a very good character although a little shy. He has no problems with our other dogs at the kennels. He is fully grown though obviously we do not have his date of birth, but we think he is around 2-3 yrs. old, and weight 10 kilos. For further information or to meet Pepe in person at our kennels, please contact Pat on 620 354 885 or visit the website: www.famaspain.com
Since things started the primary means of controlling dog behaviour has been with a collar, leash and the strength of the trainer's hand. Most pet dog owners do not have the strength and skill required. Over the past 12 years a new form of dog training has developed based on the system used by Karen Pryer, pioneer marine mammal trainer now known as the "Clicker" which is used for dolphin and whales. The training of dolphins is based on a positive reinforcement, primarily a bucket of fish. Pryor's experiences planted seeds in the minds of many trainers and behaviourists who thought if marine mammal trainers can control 600-pound sea
lions without shouting and force then why cannot we adopt a similar technique with dog training? Marine mammal trainers use whistles and clickers since they are aware that before they can even say the word "Good" the mammal has jumped 30 feet in the air. As soon as a mammal reaches the highest part of a jump he will know that unless he hears a click he will get no fish. The mammal now learns that for a wanted behaviour he gets a click and a reward, no click then he does not receive any reward.

Salon success A.R.C.H. dog show Salon Varietes is usually seen as an English Theatre and somehow separate from the Spanish life of Fuengirola but each year they have theatre and dance groups from Spanish and European communities. All nationalities particularly come to the theatre for shows where songs and music and storylines are familiar. Not just their two big musicals but also evenings of family entertainment like 'Sleigh Bells Ring' their Christmas musical entertainment. This reflects the economic benefit the theatre brings to Fuengirola, obviously in the case of hotel stays by performers but also by long term visitors who have chosen Fuengirola because it offers something unique in Spain - a proper theatre with shows produced to a
professional standard. The prople that run the Salon Varietes notice that when there is a very accessible show where, for instance the songs are known, they get an audience from all the foreign communities. Less obviously it is rare for an audience to come just for the show and the town's restaurants and shops benefit from their additional expenditure. The Theatre's Board is delighted to welcome the first citizens of Fuengirola for what should be an evening to remember coming up soon at the prizegiving for the tapas competition in Fuengirola this autumn, which many people enjoyed. The Mayor, councilors and the cabinet will be there to reflect the importance the town recognizes in the Salon Varietes for their tourism promotion.

THE MASTER Directed by Thomas Anderson Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Laura Dern Freddie Quell (Phoenix) is a sailor who finds himself adrift on dry land. It's the end of the Second World War and Quell leaves the navy with his kit bag and a huge drink problem. He finds himself in a civilian storm-tossed sea where he cannot find a steady job and everything he does is fuelled by a capacious appetite for alcohol. But the sea continues to call out to him and in a twist of fate he finds himself aboard the boat of
Lancaster Dodd (Seymour Hoffman), who is the founder of a quasiscientific body group known as The Cause. Dodd calls himself a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist, a theoretical philosopher – but, above all, a man. Some may say that this sounds a bit alarming and the sensible thing would be to run for the hills. But Freddie's senses are befuddled and he is an easy target for the power games and mind control exercised by Dodd.
The Cause captures those with money who are easily led – its followers believe in a cosmic conflict a trillion years in the making and it's all clearly bonkers. But Dodd is an authoritative and charismatic presence albeit deluded and the reasons why he is so able to wield power and be so influential are explored by Anderson. Phoenix slurs his alcoholic way through the movie and his character is not designed to elicit
sympathy. But it is a powerful performance which is being talked up as Oscar worthy. Anderson, the man behind Boogie Nights, Magnolia and There Will Be Blood, turns his focus on to religion and it makes for compelling if uncomfortable viewing. Some critics have – very cautiously – explored whether there is a parallel with L Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. See what you think.

You are on fire this week and there is no stopping you from achieving all that you desire. With all this heat you need to be careful that you do not burn yourself out and make sure that you have adequate rest even when you are on a roll. Something is definitely on a roll and you are constantly inspired to push ahead as it is likely to mean a lot to you. You long and yet fear these changes that are occurring as they ignite the very depths of your being. Your horizons are opening up and life is far from how it was a year ago, opportunities for expansion are looming, a chance to grow and move in a different way than you have known before. It is like you have been restricted until now and someone has given you a green light to explore avenues and increase your higher learning. Embrace all that is coming your way and let it feed your soul, the changes ahead bring luck and joy to you and all those that you choose to share your life with. Travel is highly likely and perhaps to a place which is different from the everyday world you are used to. It is probably not leisure but a bit more industrious and social in nature but still a necessity that cannot be avoided. Be prepared for the unexpected and the unplanned as there may be more going on than meets the eye. Behind the scenes a drama may have been unfolding that you will become party to. This will become clear as your role will be vital in bringing some clarity to the situation. This is a beneficial week for you socially when others will be warming to your inner glow and your innate sense of humour - that seems to find amusement in the everyday events that occur. Changes will not come that easily and it may be difficult for you to readily adapt. Aim to see the positive in what appears to be a difficult situation or an alien environment where you tend to feel a fish out of water. Immerse yourself totally in the experience and you will be amazed at how great you feel. Do I sense an anti-climax occurring Leo? You have probably really enjoyed the last couple of weeks and now that they have come to an end all you want to do is become a social closet and have some time to yourself until you can repeat it again - no other experience seems to come close. Perhaps you are finally far more content than you have been for a while and the plans that you have now put in place allow you to finally rest and recuperate. You have a lot going on right now and there is no time to rest on your laurels, it has become a balancing act between duty, work, social responsibilities and fun. You must have got something right though as you probably feel far happier now and settled than you have for a few years. Things are finally slotting into place and although there is pressure occurring it is a feeling that you understand and can deal with.
Another Autumn recipe (although it’s cold enough here in the office to be winter). This fruity cake is at its best when made with melting, buttery pears.
Anjou Pear Cake ingredients:
( Serves 6 )
•
• 2 tbsp apricot jam , for the glaze
50g butter , melted, plus extra for the tin • 500g ripe buttery pears, peeled, cored and roughly chopped • juice 1 lemon • 1 tbsp Poire William liqueur (optional) • 75g plain flour • 1 heaped tsp baking powder • 75g caster sugar • 2 eggs , beaten
icing sugar , for dusting
• crème fraîche , to serve
Directions 1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line a 20cm loose-bottomed cake tin with baking parchment and brush with butter. 2. Put the prepared pears in a bowl with the lemon juice and Poire William, if using, to prevent them discolouring. Sieve the flour and baking powder into a bowl, adding a pinch of salt and the caster sugar. Next beat in the eggs and melted butter. Finally, fold in the pears with their juices. Pour the cake mixture into the tin. Bake for about 50 mins or until a skewer comes out clean.
Place on a wire rack and allow to cool slightly before removing from the tin, gently peeling away the parchment. 3. To make the glaze, melt the apricot jam with 1 tbsp water and pass through a sieve to remove any lumps. Brush the cake with the glaze, dust with icing sugar and serve warm with crème fraîche. Pears If using very ripe pears, the mixture may be a bit slack, so add another 1-2 tbsp flour.

Dreams are vivid right now and your imagination is brimming with ideas and a longing to express some of the creativity that is within. There is a simmering of energy that is dying to burst forth and surprise us all. Perhaps by the weekend we will see you planning an adventure of a life time or totally re-planning the look September 23rd - of your house or garden. Family issues and members are the focus of this week or those that you consider to be your family. There is a lot of structural support coming your way from those you love or you will be providing the structural support to allow others to do what they need to do. Whatever is shared is shared back, it is the law of cause and effect and even if you do not see it straight away, all that you do is registered in the ether.
sAgittAriUs By the weekend your neighbours and those in your local community will have you celebrating or you will receive invites to a social event. There is an energy of magnetic inclusiveness around you and others will be drawn to your presence whether you wish it or not. All that you do is in the spotlight and if you do your job November 22nd - well then you can expect to be rewarded accordingly – the reverse is also true. Love December 21st what you do and do what you love and you can’t go wrong.
CAPriCOrn Intense feelings and emotions colour everything at the moment. An issue you have with a loved one is still lingering and communication is the key, there is no right time to discuss what needs to confronted and the longer you leave it the more time it has to brew. Take the bull by the horns and get it all over and December 22nd - done with, you may be pleased with the results and feel as though a burden January 19th has been lifted. By the weekend things can get very romantic.

At the end of the day it all comes down to you. No matter how much you have tried to delegate, it all seems to rest upon your shoulders, to handle the changes that are formulating. It is not that others are not capable it is just that you seem to be able to rise to the challenge at times like these and know just what to do and how to do it effectively. Make sure that you take time out for you to recuperate and re-energise.
You have been looking for answers for a while now as to the direction you should be travelling and you have put your plans into motion in the hope of some clarification or solidification that you have chosen wisely. Within in the next few weeks this is all set to play out and reveal the bigger picture, there are many lessons and experiences to be had along the way. Sometimes it will feel as though you are right and other times that you have made a mistake, the focus now is that you do not lose yourself in a battle and remain still amongst the chaos.

Alzheimer's New drug 'most detected effective' for MS decades ahead Researchers at the Banner Alzheimer's Institute in Arizona have found some of the earliest signs of Alzheimer's disease, more than two decades before the first symptoms usually appear. They looked at members of an extended Colombian family predisposed to develop an early form of Alzheimer's. A genetic mutation means they nearly always get the disease in their 40s. Alzheimer's normally becomes apparent after the age of 75. Brain scans of 20 people with the mutation, aged between 18 and 26, already showed differences compared with those from 24 people who were not destined to develop early Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's disease starts long before anyone would notice; previous studies have shown an effect on the brain 10-15 years before symptoms. It is only after enough brain cells have died that the
signs of dementia begin to appear – some regions of the brain will have lost up to 20% of their brain cells before the disease becomes noticeable. However, doctors fear so much of the brain will have degenerated by this time that it will be too late to treat patients, so treating the disease early is thought to be vital to prevent damage to memory and thinking. A spokesman for Alzheimer's Research UK, said: "Although early-onset inherited Alzheimer's is rare and may not entirely represent the more common late-onset form, the findings highlight changes can take place in the brain decades before symptoms show. "Mapping what changes happen early in the brain will help scientists to improve detection of the disease and allow potential new treatments to be tested at the right time.”
A new drug is the "most effective" treatment for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, researchers at the University of Cambridge have concluded, after comparing the effectiveness of the leukaemia drug alemtuzumab with a firstchoice drug, interferon beta-1a in two trials. The researchers tested alemtuzumab, which had shown benefits for MS in small studies.
relapsing-remitting MS, in which the symptoms can almost disappear for a time, before suddenly returning. Eventually relapsing-remitting MS can become progressive MS as the good spells become shorter and less frequent. The drug will have no effect on this form of the disease.
In one, they compared the effectiveness in patients given the drug after being diagnosed, and in the other they looked at patients given the drug after other treatments had failed. Both showed the drug was around 50% more effective at preventing relapses and patients had less disability at the end of the study than when they started.
The drug has been withdrawn from the market in Europe and the US as the manufacturer, Genzyme, intends to have it licensed as a treatment for MS. A Lancet editorial warns: "There is concern that with a licence for multiple sclerosis, the cost of alemtuzumab could rise and might become too expensive for many patients and health systems. Finding promising treatments such as alemtuzumab is important. But so is keeping alemtuzumab accessible and affordable."
Around 100,000 people in the UK have multiple sclerosis. When the condition is diagnosed most will have a form of the disease known as
However, there is concern that a drugs company is about to increase the cost of the drug as a result.

Poor Fern did so well but didn’t stand a dog’s chance of going through
Sunday night’s “Dance Off” on Strictly was a bit of a shocker … and many have gone so far as to say it was a fix but, well, who knows? Despite over-the-top as always Bruno declaring that Fern Britten’s saucy salsa was “from casual duster to saucy scrumpet!” she and her partner Artem Chigvintsev (this time with his shirt on – perhaps that was what made the difference as the dance they did the other week sans shirt was nowhere near as good) got only 27 points from the judges. Starting off as a cleaner,
complete with dusters, she whipped off her overalls to reveal an impressive hot pink salsa dress. Fern clearly loved the dance as she shook her “boobs and bootie”, as Bruno put it, getting her a “your best dance so far” from judge Len Goodman. However, despite glaring mistakes made by other dancers, they ended up in the bottom two alongside surprise bottom two couple
Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh and they didn’t stand a chance of getting through. Kimberley and partner Pasha’s Viennese Waltz glided round the dance floor and that was the end of poor Fern and Artem. Ever the gracious lady, Fern opted to heap praise on Strictly Come Dancing, saying “This is the best party on the television, it's the best programme in the world, and
I'm thrilled to have been part of it, adding “Artem, I've loved it. I wouldn't have swapped you for anything. There have been highs and lows, we've got to know each other pretty well, and I do adore you.”
What the X are they thinking? Jungle bound X Factor are in trouble again. This time they are facing a huge online backlash from fans after the apparently “live” performance last Saturday by One Direction singing their new single “Little Things” proved to have been recorded last October. And even the judges appeared in the recording wearing the same clothes they had on on Saturday to complete the illusion.
The whole ruse came crashing down when they were spotted out in Los Angeles at the same time the “live” appearance was going out. While host Dermot O’Leary never stated it was a “live performance” he told viewers on the night: “We have been celebrating the best of British tonight and they don’t come any bigger
or any more British than our next special guest. They have conquered the world and it all began for them here. We’re the proudest parents on the planet as we welcome back with their new single – One Direction.”
Angry fans took to Twitter to complain about the misleading performance with one writing: “Another X Factor scandal ... everything about that show is fake.” In response to the fan fury an X Factor spokesperson told The Sun: “One Direction were prerecorded as they are out of the country this weekend. The X Factor played it out as live but we have never tried to hide the fact it was a pre-record. To have the best guest stars we have to
work around their schedules.”
Viewing ratings for the show continue to plummet and there have been reports that Gary Barlow will be ousted out and Simon Cowell brought back in. Like him or loathe him, at least he’s interesting and

In your issue last week dated Wednesday November 7th, on page 17 it stated"Boot Sale Cancelled".
people who have informed you that the bootsale is cancelled. This is not the truth.
This is not correct. The boot sale is still open but now under the control of the Hiperdromo management, is held within the Hiperdromo itself and is no longer being organised by the original people. It is probably these
It is quite unfair to the public and especialy the stallholders to read that the boot sale is cancelled.
Name supplied Dear Prime Minister The Rt. Hon. David Cameron, MP. I wish to ask you a question:"Is this true? I refer to the Pension Reality Check. Are you aware of the following?” The British Government provides the following financial assistance:British old aged pensioner (bearing in mind they worked hard and paid their Income Tax and National Insurance contributions to the British Government all their working life) = weekly allowance: £106.00? Immigrants/refugees living in Britain (No Income Tax and National Insurance contribution whatsoever) = Weekly allowance: £250.00 British old aged pensioner = Weekly Spouse Allowance: £25.00? Illegal immigrants/refugees living in Britain = Weekly Spouse Allowance: £225.00 British old aged pensioner =
You printed the article after being informed by the original organisers, in good
faith, but to be fair to your readers I think it would be useful to mention in next Wednesday’s issue that the boot sale at the Hiperdromo is on every Sunday as normal but now run by Hiperdromo management. ps.....this can be confirmed by calling the Hiperdromo on the phone..952 592 700

Stargazing By Ken Campbell

Photographing stars You have probably seen photographs in magazines and on TV of stars in the night sky; well it is really quite easy to take photographs yourself.
W
Additional Weekly Hardship Allowance: £0.00?
ith today’s modern digital cameras it costs nothing in development and you can see the results right away without having to wait ages for the images to be processed.
Illegal immigrants/refugees living in Britain = Additional Weekly Hardship Allowance: £100.00
B
ecause the stars are obviously quite faint you will need to have a camera that allows for a long time exposure which will keep the shutter open allowing more light to be captured. And because the shutter will be staying open for a long time the camera must not move during the exposure so you will also need a tripod or some other way of keeping the camera steady.
A British old age pensioner is no less hard up than an illegal immigrant/refugee yet receives nothing. British old aged pensioner = Total yearly benefit £6,000?
A
Illegal immigrants/refugees living in Britain = Total yearly benefit £29,900! We must lobby for a decent state pension, after all, the average pensioner has paid taxes and contributed to the growth of this country for the last 40 to 60 years.
Sad isn't it? Surely it's about time we put our own people first.
ttach your camera to the tripod and point it at the part of the sky you wish to photograph. Try to be in an area with as little light pollution as possible, the darker the sky the better your image will appear. Switch off the autofocus mechanism and manually adjust the focus to infinity or landscape setting, switch off the auto-flash. Set the ‘film’ speed or ISO setting to 400 ASA; a faster ‘film’ setting is more sensitive to fainter light. Set the exposure or shutter speed to 30 seconds and the widest aperture possible, you can always experiment with longer or shorter exposures. Now, to avoid any vibration or movement of the camera use the camera’s self-timer or a cable release to fire the shutter.
variations in their respective brightness can be seen. Some fainter deep sky objects that are normally quite hard to see with the naked eye can appear on the image. The Andromeda Galaxy and the Orion nebula both show up well on even 30 second exposures.
I
f you want to include the Moon in your image it is better to block out the Moon for part of the exposure otherwise it will appear over exposed. You will have to experiment with how long to keep the Moon obscured depending on how much of the Moon is illuminated, a Full Moon needs only a fraction of a second exposure.
T
his Friday 16th November the Earth will pass through the debris left behind by the Comet TempleTuttle. The tiny particles will crash into the Earth’s upper atmosphere and create shooting stars or meteors during the annual Leonid meteor shower. This will be a great opportunity to try and photograph a meteor.

fter the photograph has been displayed you can always adjust any of the settings until you are satisfied with the image. It is that simple!
ow you can begin to get creative with your pictures. Because of the movement of the Earth, any exposures over 45-60 seconds will cause the stars to begin to streak on the image. This streaking can be quite appealing and if you leave the shutter open for several minutes instead of seconds then the streaking will become more and more pronounced. I have seen photographs that have been exposed for several hours and the streak effect is quite remarkable. If you point your camera at the North Star and give it a very long exposure then this star appears to remain still while all the other stars create curved arcs circling around it.
o catch a falling star simply set your camera on its tripod pointing at any part of the sky – as meteors can appear anywhere – set an exposure time for between 5 and 10 minutes and be patient. If you are very lucky a meteor will zoom across the area of the sky that your camera is looking at creating a streak crossing the star trails on the image. Patience and good luck are the key words here! Some years I have snapped away all night and not managed to capture one image of a meteor but in 2008 there was quite a flurry of meteors from the Leonids and I managed to photograph six or seven over a three hour period. It’s a bit like fishing but a lot more fun! appy Stargazing!
he colours of the stars become more pronounced during long exposure photographs and the

Ford begins production of new Fiesta
Ford has started volume production of the new Ford Fiesta ahead of the latest version of Britain’s best seller debuting in UK dealerships from January. The dynamically-styled latest Fiesta features new smart technologies and a breakthrough powertrain line-up. “The new Fiesta has seven powertrain options – both diesel and petrol – that deliver fuel economy of less than 100 grams of CO2 per kilometre,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe.
Pedrosa wins crash fest Dani Pedrosa won the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix after starting from the pit lane and taking advantage of world champion Jorge Lorenzo's crash on Sunday.
The Spaniard made quick progress through the field to steer his Honda into second place before taking over the lead when Lorenzo went off with a spectacular highside on his Yamaha after hitting a wet patch with 17 laps to go. "It was a thrilling race," Pedrosa said. "I had never started from pit lane before, but after the warmup lap I had a moment of inspiration when I just knew I needed to change tyres. It's fantastic to win the last race of the season." Yamaha test rider Katsuyuki Nakasuga was second on his Yamaha, more than 37 seconds behind, while retiring twotime world champion Casey Stoner earned his 69th career MotoGP podium with a third-place finish in his final race. It was Pedrosa's 22nd

McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are optimistic the new United States Grand Prix track will prove to be a success. "Whether those elements will blend together to make a satisfying whole remains to be seen, but there are a couple of long straights into tight corners, too, which should at least open up the possibility of overtaking. "I think we're in for a fantastic weekend – I really cannot wait to get out to Austin and see the city, the people and the track. I think it's going to be brilliant."
Talking on McLaren's official race preview, Button said: "On paper, the circuit looks to have a little bit of everything. “The plan-view certainly looks familiar. You can see elements of the Maggotts/Becketts complex

Pedrosa had 332, while Stoner was a distant third with 254. Another rider who started from the pit lane was Britain’s Cal Crutchlow who was 'very disappointed' to see a potential career-best second place finish go wanting after being caught out by a crash on lap 23. “I had a comfortable lead over third and it was looking good for me to get my best MotoGP result when I hit the smallest wet patch going into the final corner. Moto3 ace Danny Kent secured a stunning second Grand Prix victory in the final race of 2012 at the Valencia circuit. Kent pulled off an audacious last-corner manoeuvre to pass German World Champion and team-mate Sandro Cortese to complete a win which took him to fourth place in the series standings. The countdown to the 2013 season begins this week for Danny as he gets to test his Moto2 Tech3 machine for the first time around the Valencia circuit.

New Merc shooting brake Mercedes-Benz expects demand for four-door luxury cars with coupe styling will grow in the coming years and the brand is aiming for a larger share of the niche with the introduction of the CLS Shooting Brake. The car is a wagon variant of the CLS sedan launched in 2004. As the niche is small and relatively new, Mercedes-Benz expects the CLS Shooting Brake to win sales, mainly from European and Asian customers rather than buyers in the United States. Mercedes expects about 15,000 of the 50,000 to 55,000 annual CLS sales to be Shooting Brake variants. The CLS Shooting Brake is available with five engine

Liverpool players snub Suarez Luis Suarez's joyous celebration after scoring for Liverpool at Chelsea were dampened when he discovered he was completely alone. The Uruguayan latched on to Jamie Carragher's flick on from a corner and headed into the roof of the net, before sprinting to the corner flag and yelping into a TV camera. His second-half equaliser at the home of the European champions would surely

After a moment of awkward contemplation as he stared at the empty space in front of him, Suarez shouted 'Yeah!' and started blowing kisses to the crowd. The incident has become an internet sensation, with Twitter users taking mischievous delight in the controversial Uruguayan's discomfort. It sparked his ill father. The Serb beat Federer 7-6 (8-6) 7-5 to win the seasonending title at London's O2 Arena. He later described how he had been motivated by his father Srdjan, who is said to be suffering from an acute respiratory illness. "This was a title for him," said the 25-year-old from Belgrade. Answering the call from members of the Malaga provincial Lawn Bowling community for more quality Federated tournaments, the Provincial Delegation has produced a full and varied calendar for this season. Some of the items are completely new and some are popular events that have been revived, such as the Kings Cup/Team Almeria v Team Malaga, (very successfully staged in October 2012) and the Andalucian Championships. Wayne’s Poker Tips Full Tilt Poker – the on-line poker giant which has been off line since June 2011 after suffering serious financial problems – has this week made a return under the guidance of Poker Stars the biggest poker site on the net. The return of FTP also means good news for non-US account holders as $184 million is now available to service the money held in these accounts, whether these players will elect to stay with FTP or move their money will show players confidence in the re-launched site. Account holders have reported
problems with passwords and logging on but FTP have promised these are just teething problems and the issues should be resolved in the next week or so. If you are an FTP account holder I would advise you to log on and secure your account. The knock on effect from the FTP collapse meant the prospect of even stricter legislation in the US to regulate on-line poker. John Pappas of the Poker Players Alliance feels the recent re-election of Barack Obama can only be good news for US on-line poker he said,
"I really think the status quo is the bestcase scenario for something getting done with this lame duck. Any time the vote gets rocked too much, meaning the House or Senate switches parties or the White House changes hands, the chances of compromise or deal making in the lame duck is much more difficult since the parties newly in control have no incentive to cut deals. They would
rather wait until they have members of their caucus in place and deal with things in the New Year.” Whatever that means! Poker tip of the week, if you’re on the button and the pot is uncontested put in a raise as more often than not you will steal the blinds, however if your raising with rags and they fight back consider a fold.

Kimi Raikkonen has given his entire Lotus team T-shirts emblazoned with his nowfamous radio message during his Abu Dhabi Grand Prix victory. The 33-yearold Finn took his first win since his return to the sport this year and his team's first since the 2008 Japanese Grand Prix. On Friday 500 T-shirts carrying the slogan: "Leave me alone, I know what I'm doing" arrived at the factory. The T-shirts are black, with the words in gold, reflecting
the team's colours. The phrase is a reference to Raikkonen's remarks on team radio during the race. Raikkonen inherited the lead when Lewis Hamilton's McLaren retired with fuel-pump failure. Following Hamilton's retirement, Raikkonen's engineer Simon Rennie told him his advantage over second-placed Fernando Alonso's Ferrari and that he would keep him updated on the Ferrari's pace, to which Raikkonen responded: "Just leave me alone, I know what I am doing." Just a Classic Raikkonen comment.

Malaga 1 - 2 Real Sociadad After the midweek's heroics in Milan where Malaga qualified for the last 16 of the competition with a 1-1 draw, they looked to have their minds still on Europe.
