Flooding threatens hundreds of homes Residents in up to 500 properties in North Wales were advised to leave their homes on Monday after the River Elwy broke its banks. Forecasters said the threat of floods remains in many areas. In North Yorkshire, more than 50 houses in Pickering are currently under threat from rising water levels. In all, about 200 flood warnings were in force in
England and Wales. There was more heavy rain in northern England and North Wales overnight on Monday, arousing fears saturated ground could lead to further flooding and travel disruption. But the rain was expected to ease on Tuesday.

Not normally me I spent the weekend putting one of the kitchens back together. I told you the other week that we had moved our big cooker into the main kitchen which meant that the other one looked like a tip and, as I’m so busy at the moment I have to admit I had pretty much closed the door on it all! Of course, that never works and every time you have to go in there it looks even worse – never a good thing – so I bit the bullet and it looks pretty good again and, at least it’s clean and tidy. The only thing was that, before I could put all the stuff away in there, I had to put all the stuff

Christmas has started to rear it’s ugly head once more, bah humbug, and we started to put the tree up on Sunday. That is to say, it’s out of its box and standing in front of the patio doors. I had bought some little Christmas teddies from a charity plus I got a Christmas Wombat when we were in Australia last year (yes, it really is a year already) so he’s got pride of place at the moment and is looking like a very happy Wombat having been in his paper bag all year! Flooding threatens hundreds of homes In other areas: In Cornwall, the A39 at Perranarworthal was closed in both directions because of flooding and a poor road surface. And levels at Cornwall's largest natural lake, Lake Loe Pool, were 1m above normal. Flooding continued to affect East Coast rail routes including between Durham and York, and between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Newcastle. Flooding on the line six miles south of Darlington caused delays of up to 30 minutes. The River Ouse in York (above right) was being monitored, with water levels expected to rise during Tuesday. The river burst its banks on Monday, affecting riverside buildings, although the situation is said to be less severe than flooding in September. North Yorkshire County Council estimates 50 roads were closed because of flooding.
WEATHER WEATHER
More than 940 homes have suffered flooding since last Wednesday, according to Environment Agency data. On Monday, closures, delays and safety warnings affected dozens of A-roads, while cancellations and delays also hit some national rail services. The Environment Agency has warned that "large, slow responding rivers" – particularly the Thames, Trent and Severn – would
continue to rise over the next few days. Two flood warnings for the Scottish Borders have now been lifted by the

Regional premier defies election results After his worse-thanexpected showing at the polls on Sunday, Catalan regional premier Artur Mas (right) said on Monday that he will not step down after leading his party into one of its worst election results ever and vowed to press ahead with his CiU bloc’s plan to hold a referendum on sovereignty at some time in the next four years. Appearing at a press conference with Josep Antoni Duran Lleida – the leader of the Unió half of CiU – Mas said he did not regret holding elections two years early, even though the party had lost 12 seats in the regional parliament. In the run-up to the election, Mas repeatedly said he wanted an “exceptional majority”

to carry out his aim of independence from Spain. He had been governing with 62 seats, six short of an outright majority. The two CiU leaders said they planned to open talks with the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) and the Catalan Socialists (PSC), which now have 21 and 20 seats respectively, about forming a coalition government. The proindependence ERC doubled its share of the vote, to become the second biggest party in the 135seat assembly with 21 seats. ERC leader Oriol Junqueras said voters had issued a "mandate to hold a referendum" but ruled out forming a coalition with CiU, saying his party
would continue to fight against economic cuts: "Austerity is a mistake, we insist on the need for a change in the budget policies." However, he said ERC would not stand in the way of Mas continuing to be regional premier. PSC leader Pere Navarro said on Tuesday that Mas had failed to fulfil promises made two years ago to obtain his party’s support and that he was unwilling to risk further disillusionment. Of the remaining five parties, the Partido Popular bitterly opposes Mas’s determination to hold a referendum, the ICV and CUP approve of it but oppose his cuts while the
Citizens Party, which also opposes more cuts, opposes any move towards independence from Spain. In Madrid, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told members of his Partido Popular (PP) during the organisation’s national committee meeting on Monday: "I've never seen
such a ruinous political operation as Mas's," and called Mas “a complete failure”. Rajoy said that Mas and the CiU had “lost valuable time” by insisting on holding the elections as a way of allowing voters to legitimise his separatist ideas.

Drivers support speed limit increase
The government has rejected an offer made by the Basque terrorist group ETA over the weekend to enter into talks with Spain and France with the objective of negotiating a "definitive end" to its operations. In its statement to Basque newspaper, Gara, ETA announced it was ready to dismantle its military operations and hand over its arms if the government would agree to move ETA prisoners to the Basque region.
announced a definitive end to its armed struggle just over a year ago, also imposed other conditions, such as “demilitarising” the Basque Country – that is, removing the National Police and Guardia Civil stationed there.
Some 700 convicted members of ETA are currently in jail in different parts of the country and their families have long been campaigning for their transfer closer to home. The group, which
It also objected to the government’s plan to allow Basques who went into voluntary exile to escape ETA violence to vote by post in the region’s elections. In its statement, ETA said failure by the
government to open negotiations would pose "a real risk of the process stalling". On Sunday, Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz told reporters: "They know that we have not negotiated, nor will we negotiate in any way with the terrorist organisation, so the only statement the government demands – not requests but demands – and is working for, is its total and unconditional dissolution."
ETA, which stands for Euskadi Ta Askatasuna – Basque Homeland and Freedom – is blamed for more than 840 killings over a four-decade armed campaign for an independent homeland encompassing parts of northern Spain and southwestern France. Most of its older experienced leaders are in jail and support for the group and its aims has weakened considerably in the Basque Country.
King has another hip operation King Juan Carlos, 74, underwent a successful hip replacement operation in the Quiron San Jose hospital in Madrid last Friday and was allowed
home on Wednesday. His doctor, Angel Villamor, told reporters the King had put great strain on his hip this year,
with four overseas visits to Latin America, Russia, the United States and India. “But he’s very tough”, Villamor said, “I would have opted for an
operation much earlier”. He said the King would undergo physiotherapy for about a month before taking up his normal duties again.
automobile associations and concessionary companies support the government’s proposal to increase the speed limit on toll roads to 140 kph. The objective is to increase the use of these roads, which have been affected by the economic crisis. The road Safety director of raCe, Tomás Santa Cecilia, said the measure would not increase the number of road accidents, since 76 per cent of these occur on conventional highways and roads. But the State association of road accident Victims (dia) said an increase in the speed limit was “unnecessary” and hoped that such a step would not be an “open door” to increasing the limit on conventional highways.

Legal blunder frees money launderer a legal error has led to the release from custody of one of the ringleaders of a Chinese money-laundering ring, which has been described by the authorities as the largest criminal venture of its kind broken up in Spain in recent years. The High Court upheld an appeal by lawyers acting for one of the ring’s top men, Kay Yang, on the basis that he had been held for more than 72 hours without being brought before a judge. Over 100 people were arrested in the police investigation against the ring on October 16th. Other members of the ring, including the organisation's kingpin, Gao Ping, his wife, and the alleged head of his gang of enforcers, Li Haibo, are expected to be freed after making similar appeals.

Eurozone finance ministers and the IMF have reached a deal on an urgently needed bailout for debt-laden Greece. They have agreed to cut debts by €40 billion and have paved the way for releasing the next tranche of bailout loans – some €44 billion. Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras welcomed the deal, saying "a new day begins for all Greeks". The breakthrough came after more than 10 hours of talks in Brussels on Monday. It was the eurozone's third meeting in two weeks on Greece. The deal opens the way for support for Greece's teetering banks and will
allow the government to pay wages and pensions in December. The leader of the eurozone finance ministers' group, JeanClaude Juncker, said Greece would get the next instalment of cash on December 13th. the government has apologised to victims of abuse in the military, after a probe that saw hundreds of claims of mistreatment made. defence Minister Stephen Smith told parliament steps would be taken to ensure the sexual, physical and mental abuse would not be repeated. the investigation received more than 1,000 claims of abuse dating from the 1950s to the present day. it was commissioned after an incident in april 2011 in which two cadets from the australian defence force academy were accused of secretly filming a female cadet having sex and broadcasting it on the internet. a judge will lead a taskforce that will investigate each individual abuse claim.
Advertorial
As we are all aware there is a crisis in Spain and I am seeing a worrying trend in burglaries where the intruder already has the key. Only last week I was talking with a National Police officer who said the landlord is obliged to change the locks before a new tenant. Sadly this does not always take place so they are seeing an increase in this type of crime. I met the officer at a client’s home. The client was changing the locks too late. He had lost around 4000 euros to key crime. He was unaware he only had copy keys and not the originals.

Shredded but legible, they belonged to the nassau County Police department, and included sensitive data such as social security numbers and banking information for police employees. the confetti strips were found by a college student, who noticed one strip stuck on a friend's coat. a representative for nassau County Police said the department was "very concerned about this situation”. Rightwingers at loggerheads although an internal party commission has declared Jeanfrancois Cope the new leader of the opposition centre-right UMP party, his rival in the leadership battle, francois fillon, has called the decision “illegal”. Mr Cope and Mr fillon have traded accusations of fraud since the november 18th election, which an initial count said Mr Cope had narrowly won. after a fresh ballot count, the commission found that Mr Cope had won by almost 1,000 votes. Mr fillon had contested the vote, saying many votes from france's overseas territories have not been counted. ex-President nicolas Sarkozy, a UMP member, has indicated that a fresh vote is needed, while many fear the disagreement will split france’s main right-wing party.

Indirect Gaza ceasefire talks begin Representatives of Israel and Hamas have begun indirect talks about the implementation of the ceasefire deal that ended the recent violence in Gaza. The negotiations are being led by Egyptian intermediaries in Cairo. Hamas is expected to press for an end of the Israeli blockade on Gaza, while Israel is seeking an assurance that the smuggling of weapons across Gaza's southern border with Egypt will end. Under the terms of the
initial ceasefire, agreed last Wednesday, Israel agreed to end all hostilities and targeted killings, while Hamas agreed to stop attacks against Israel and along the Gaza border fence. Meanwhile, Hamas’ political leader Khaled Meshaal has telephoned the Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas, to say the Islamist movement "welcomed" his bid to have Palestine recognised as a "nonmember observer state" at
the United Nations. The announcement by Hamas was unexpected. Its leaders have previously dismissed the UN approach as a waste of time. Israel and the US have threatened financial penalties if the Palestinians press ahead with the UN bid, saying the only way to achieve an independent state is through negotiations. At least 158 Palestinians and six Israelis were killed in the eight-day offensive which Israel said it launched to stop rocketfire from the territory.
Vietnam rejects new Chinese passports Vietnamese border officials are refusing to stamp new Chinese passports bearing a map that lays claim to disputed areas and have instead been issuing visas on separate pieces of paper and stamping those issued previously as invalid. Vietnam, the Philippines and Taiwan have objected to the map because it shows
disputed islands in the South China Sea to be a part of China. India is also embroiled in a row over the map's inclusion of two disputed areas in the Himalayan region. China's Communist party newspaper, The People's Daily, said that Vietnam and other neighbours were trying to
contain China with help from the United States. China and the Philippines openly clashed over the disputed islands at last week’s meeting of the Association of South East Asian (Asean) nations in Cambodia. Asean has been trying to reach consensus over how to resolve the various territorial disputes with China.

New police commissioners take over forces in Britain
N
EWS IN BRIEF
UK A change that will not be immediately obvious to those returning to or visiting Britain concerns the way police forces up and down the country are run, as police authorities have now been replaced with elected police and crime commissioners. The theoretical advantage is accountability in that the commissioner of a failing police force can be kicked out at the ballot box.
It is certainly true that the old police authorities were often seen as being less than effective providers of jobs for the boys. Now that the dust has settled, it has become clear that slightly less than 15 per cent voted in the elections to appoint their new commissioners across England and Wales, a matter of concern for the Electoral Commission. The main political parties are
Fraud investigators tackle motoring scam
It has been estimated by investigators that fraudulent motor accident insurance claims are costing British motorists £392 million a year in increased insurance premiums to meet the cost of the scams. The fraudsters make money from fake crashes by submitting claims for personal injury, loss of earnings, car hire, damage repair, even claims for bogus passengers.
Special investigators are now working with the police in an effort to dismantle 40 ‘Cash for Crash’ gangs currently under investigation across the country. The web of deceit runs deep, with recovery and storage companies, motor engineers, car repair body shops, doctors and lawyers being either corrupted or duped into helping present genuine-looking claims to insurers.
concerned because independent candidates were elected to 12 of the 41 posts. Sir Hugh Orde, president of the Association of Police Officers, said chief constables were looking forward to working with the new commissioners. He was not opposed to chief constables being tested properly and suggested it should not be a cosy relationship.
Crack-down on the judicial review PRIME Minister David Cameron has again promised a crack-down on time-wasting legal challenges to planning decisions and other policies which could be hampering the economic recovery in Britain. He has attacked judicial review as a massive growth industry that is delaying progress and costing tax payers too much money. A Downing Street spokesman said the shakeup of the judicial review process was aimed at making people think twice about time wasting after applications rose from 160 in 1975 to 11,200 last year. Mr Cameron believes the Government urgently needs to get a grip on this. A reduced judicial review time limit, higher fees and other restrictions are likely to be proposed by the Ministry of Justice.
Jobs up in UK British Prime Minister David Cameron has received good news on employment in Britain with a fall of 50,000 in the number of jobless strengthening hopes of an economic recovery. It does suggest that jobs do exist and the Government welcomed in particular the fall in youth unemployment. Overall there were 29.58 million in work.

Press waits for Leveson verdict The press is waiting to see how the Government will react to Lord Justice Leveson’s proposals following the ‘phone hacking scandal in Britain. There is speculation that the Government will err on the side of freedom of the press, but Downing Street has said that Prime Minister David Cameron is keeping an open mind until he has seen the report, which follows the Leveson Inquiry. The Mail on Sunday newspaper has suggested the Prime Minister will back tougher self-regulation with the threat of statutory controls if it fails.

1 in 3 use mobiles Christmas card competition results One in three UK drivers admits to using a handset when behind the wheel, according to figures published last Friday by insurance company LV=. It is almost ten years since the law came into force banning people from using their mobiles while driving and some have even admitted in the survey that they check social network sites facebook and Twitter whilst on the road! Around a million people have been caught and punished for using their phones in that time. John O'Roarke, managing director of LV=, said: "It's worrying to see that many motorists are continuing to use their devices when on the road. While it can seem tempting for people to use their phones at the wheel, they should always pull over to make a call, send a text or browse the internet. By not doing so, they risk points, a fine or, even worse, causing an accident." Cyclist Jordan Wickington was killed in Southampton in 2007 by a driver who was texting while behind the wheel. The motorist went to jail for four years for dangerous
His Excellency the Governor of Gibraltar, Sir Adrian Johns, was delighted with the large number of entries that were received for the Governor’s 2012 Christmas Card Competition. driving. "Nothing is being done," Jordan's halfbrother Dan Hickham said. "I've spoken about this over the past few years. I've done various media interviews where I'm asked my opinion on the fact that many people are still using their mobile phones. The statistics don't seem to have moved in that period of time, which leads me to believe there is not a strong enough deterrent for people." Enforcing the law is difficult because it requires a physical police presence to do so. Electronic speed cameras are unable to pick up offenders, although technology has improved and some laser cameras can now spot drivers from half a mile away.
‘Christmas at the end of the Diamond Jubilee Year’ theme. Christmas trees and Santa hats were popular choices, whilst other cards featured original and creative designs such as Santa’s sleigh being pulled by the Red Arrows and the Queen opening Christmas presents under a Christmas tree.
The winner of this year’s competition is Sarah Vitale of the Notre Dame School. Sarah’s design will feature on the Governor’s Christmas Cards which will be sent around the world, including to Her Majesty the Queen. The runners up were Christina Ochella and Carla Cruz, also pupils at the Notre Dame School. The
Eyeballs, caught safely It's a deadly and predatory animal and has been known to prey on mice, squirrels and even hedgehogs. But this wild owl, nicknamed 'Eyeballs', has been preying on residents, terrorising them and making them feel trapped in their own home, it is claimed. The eagle owl, which has a 6ft wingspan, was captured after it attacked a poodle and a gardener and the safety of children was called into question in Northam, Devon. Locals Sandra and Peter Morris called experts from Owls R Us to remove the owl from the town after it attacked their poodle, Minnie.
Mr Morris, 65, said: "Minnie was in the garden and I saw the owl swoop. I got in the way to protect the dog and the bird flew into me. It didn't draw blood or knock me over but it was a big weight. We love the bird to bits.” The man who had welcomed the owl into his home, did not want to be named, and said: "I used to shout for Eyeballs and he would come to the window, he was so friendly, he was like a pet cat." Nicknamed because of his large orange
winner and runners up will be invited to lunch with His Excellency the Governor and presented with a trophy each, kindly donated by HM Government of Gibraltar. All the Christmas cards that were entered into the competition will be decorating the Convent over the Christmas period .
Booze up for Xmas? Britain is expected to go ahead within days with plans to introduce a minimum price for alcohol of 40p a unit in an effort to tackle binge drinking and alcohol-related ill health.
and purple eyes, the owl would visit the man's house, swoop onto his window sill and hopped around his living room. The owl was captured in a net after specialists from Owls R Us lured it using a female bird as bait. It is now living in a sanctuary in Chulmleigh, Devon.
Ministers are also thought to be planning tough curbs on multi-buy discounts which could affect people who buy packs of beer or wine in boxes of six. They say binge drinking isn’t a fringe issue but accounts for half of all alcohol consumed in the country.

Coat of arms causes RAFA remembers them for another year a row The Socialist Party in VelezMalaga has objected to the Town Hall’s decision to spend €37,000 to change the coat of arms on the council’s stationery. Mayor Francisco Delgado of the Partido Popular wants to remove the figure of an Arab with a lance through his chest from the coat of arms. It was granted to the town on September 14th 1499 by Isabel La Catolica, to honour the bravery of a royal groom who stood in
front of her husband, Fernando of Aragon, to protect him from a spear thrown by a defending Moor during the battle for the town in 1487, saving the king’s life and losing his own. The mayor said the original coat of arms would be kept for ceremonial occasions but he wanted to give the town’s communications on paper a “more modern look”. The Socialist Party said he was
wasting money needed for more pressing problems.

Once again, St. George s English Church in Malaga was full to overflowing for the Annual Service of Remembrance, when the British and their allies remember the fallen of the many conflicts in which British and British Commonwealth members fought. Winter’s finally here A cold spell began on Monday night which the weathermen say will last until next Sunday at least, bringing to an end a mild – if wet – November.
desperate residents – tired of the smell and the hundreds of rats – took to burning the garbage piled up around the rubbish leaving containers, hardened puddles of melted green plastic for the cleaners to remove. Dozens of diggers were deployed to help them in the Herculean task, with the cleaners themselves working double shifts to get rid of the backlog as soon as possible. Despite the return to

work, the burnings continued over the weekend, the firemen being called out 60 times on Saturday night alone. A council spokesman said he expected the city’s streets to be back to normal by the end of the week. To keep their jobs, cleaners had agreed to accept a 10 per cent cut in wages and a reduction of extra and special payments specified in their contracts, which will save the Town Hall some €3 million a year.

Quieter weekends The town council is putting together a modification of the Citizens’ Coexistence regulation in order to limit the noise caused by public works at the weekend. a spokesman said that any activity that went above 65 decibels will not be allowed from 3 pm on Saturday to 8 am on monday. He said the objective was to ensure that residents would be able to get the rest they deserved over the weekend.

Vegetables on line Last week’s minimum temperatures of between 12 to 14 degrees will now be the maximum ones, with the minimum expected to drop to 2 or 3 degrees in many parts of the province. Temperatures will rise slightly next week but the weathermen say the current cold snap will not be the worst one this winter.
New technologies are allowing some of the province’s vegetable growers to build up a clientele online without intermediaries. The cooperative la Huerta de malaga (malaga’s Vegetable garden) has been selling produce from its base in the andalucian Technological Park in the provincial capital for two months now and is satisfied with the results, although for the moment most of its clients work in the area. a spokesman said many people worked in the Park and were spreading the word to friends, neighbours and relatives. “Our produce is top quality, fresh and reasonably priced”, he said, “and what’s more, we get a decent income instead of having to stand by and watch the middlemen walk off with huge profits.”
BeNalmadeNa The recent torrential rains which flooded many areas are not expected to return. The next problem will be heavy snowfall in the mountainous areas of Granada and Jaen, which is bad news for the residents but good news for skiers.
Defibrillator for town hall The Town Hall has joined the network of public buildings which have defibrillators installed. The portable health tool has been installed in the main entrance hall thanks to an agreement between the council and the Ibermutuamur company, which will also train council workers to operate the machine. defibrillators have already been installed in the health centre, sports grounds and the skating rink at de arroyo de la miel.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of
From more to less
Little or no answers
T
ith the Catalan elections over the government of Mariano Rajoy should not have any more delays in finally getting the European Union to help Spain put its finances in order.
he leader of the Partido Popular’s Catalan branch, Alicia SanchezCamacho, had her followers in stitches at a celebration rally on Sunday night when she said regional premier Arturo Mas had gone from “more to less” (de mas a menos). And never a truer word was said. Mas had appealed to Catalan voters to give him an “exceptional majority” so that he could forge ahead with his cherished referendum on Catalan independence from Spain. As it was, the proindependence parties won a majority but for some reason – possibly because of the savage cuts he had made – voters decided to punish Sr Mas. By the end of the day, he had 12 seats less – a mere 50, down from the 62 he won in the last election. The majority in the Catalan Parliament is 68 seats and Mas called last Sunday’s election two years before he needed to precisely to get that majority. Well, he was left with egg on his face, which he well deserved.
H
e has had the whole country in an uproar since he called the election back in late September, with the headline writers rarely straying to any other subject. A foreigner not familiar with the Spanish political scene would have been forgiven for thinking Spain was a region of Catalonia, and not vice versa.
U
nfortunately it looks as if Mas is going to continue dominating the headlines, but not in the way he had hoped. He had envisaged a resounding triumph that would let him continue to make sure that Spain and the rest of world talked about nothing else but Catalan’s secession from Spain, led by brave Sir Artur. He’s been looking pretty sick since Sunday because the question dominating the headlines now is how the devil is he going to be able to form a government. The real hardline separatists appear to have voted for the Catalan Republican Left or Esquerra which has been lusting to lead a stampede out of Spain for years now. The Socialists – who got 20 seats, down from 28 last time – don’t want separation, nor does the PP, who managed to win 19 seats, one more than last time.
T
he other four parties focused on Mas’s savage spending cuts during the election campaign – although a couple of them sympathise with his separatist ideas. However, the main fly in the ointment is the ERC. It wants
independence but opposes making any more spending cuts.
T
he party was founded in 1931 by an elderly and romantic former Army colonel called Francisco Macia for the elections which ended in King Alfonso XIII leaving the country in the hands of the Second Republic. It became the main force in Catalonia but independence was not a priority for Macia. However, his second-incommand, a young lawyer called Luis Companys, immediately called for separation from Spain. The Republican government fobbed off the Catalans with an autonomous statute that gave the region almost as much power as the Madrid government had. But in October 1934, having taken over the leadership of the party, Companys went ahead and declared unilateral independence. He was jailed for his pains, and released in July 1936 to help save Catalonia from the military uprising. Barcelona held out until January 26th, 1939, when Companys managed to escape to France. He was captured by the Gestapo near Paris on August 13th, 1940, sent back to Spain and executed October 15th, 1940.
L
ike all the other political parties, the ERC went into exile until Franco’s death. It was not legalised until after the June 1977 general election and only began to make itself felt at a national level after the next election in 1979, beating the drum of independence from Spain incessantly. Most of its post-dictatorship leaders have tried to mould themselves in the image of the swashbuckling Companys, taking great delight in doing anything and everything to annoy Madrid and the CiU, which governed Catalonia until the Socialists ousted it in 2003 by forming a coalition with the ERC and another smaller nationalist party. It was an uneasy alliance that resulted in a loss of votes for ERC in the 2006 regional election. But thanks to Mas and his separatist obsession, it’s now back in force and could play a key role in his political future – or lack of one.
W
ith only 50 seats Mas can’t possibly govern alone and the only likely ally is the ERC, but the only thing they agree on is independence. Mas can only blame himself for getting into such a mess by calling an unnecessary election that finally ended up wiping the self-satisfied smirk off his face.
W
T
he first request for aid to help shore up Spain's ailing banks should come as early as Saturday. Economy Minister Luis de Guindos has already cautioned that the €40 billion would be given in exchange for some painful measures in the banking industries. Those financial institutions that do receive funding will have to close a good portion of their branches and lay off workers across the country. Bankia is expected to be hardest hit since it stands to receive a larger share of the EU money, with about 9,000 jobs lost. By press time, the extent of the restructuring had still to be announced today in Brussels.
T
he aid package was long in coming. Ever since June, when EU finance ministers agreed to help Spain’s banks, the Partido Popular government had been putting off filing the formal request. First the Rajoy administration said it wanted to wait for the results of stress tests that it had commissioned from private auditors. In the background, Rajoy was quietly strategizing with his party members to hold off until after the Basque and Galician elections, which took place in October – even though he repeatedly denied this. Then came a surprise turn when Artur Mas announced the early elections for Catalonia in the hope that he could turn the race into a plebiscite for his plans to hold a referendum within the next four years on independence for the region.
A
gain, Rajoy didn’t want to chance it, especially since many Catalans appeared ready to punish the PP at the polls. He needn’t have worried – the PP got 19 seats, one more than two years ago. With all the campaigning ended – for now – the Rajoy government doesn't see any immediate political fallout from the aid package he intends to seek from Brussels.
B
ut the PP leader still has other problems with Brussels. The proposed EU budget for 20142020, which continental leaders could not agree upon last week, stems to cut some €20 billion in aid over the course of five years for Spain which are mostly
handed down as farm subsidies. This will greatly affect the already badly weakened agriculture industries. Spain will now become a net contributor to the EC coffers – something that it hasn’t been since it joined the bloc in 1986.The European Commission has also announced that it intends to re-evaluate the way Spain spends future EU funds.
Mariano Rajoy
O
ne top official said that there have been too many infrastructure projects, such as roads and buildings, that have been questionable, and not enough stimulus when it comes to job creation, especially for people under 25. This no doubt sounds like the days of the fat contracts for party movers and shakers for inflated public works will soon be over. The EU wants to ensure that Spain uses the money for growth projects and not cosmetic affairs.
T
he Rajoy government may think that the political fallout from receiving less aid money might be minimal, but in any effect it will pose serious problems for the PP now that there will be massive layoffs in the banking and financial sectors. The proliferation of banks during recent years has been a problem for a small country that really didn’t have the financial means to support industries and private citizens whose mortgages ended up disasters.
I
f the PP can show Brussels that it means business, there could be a new turn on the economy. But at the same time, Spaniards are continuing to lose faith with the Rajoy government – just one year into his term. The man they believed would be a strong leader with new ideas has become instead a confused politician with little or no answers for solving this crisis.

Buyrite – the local store with all you need Buyrite Supermarket on El Rodeo in Coin is a most surprising store. At first, you think it’s just a “corner shop” but it’s amazing what you can find there. Of course, they stock everything you need for everyday use but, with Christmas coming up you will find all manner of goodies on top of their usual stock – and, you can order your goodies in advance. Get your Christmas cards and 2013 diaries from here (why not get some for stocking fillers?) plus your festive crackers for the day itself. When I was in the shop today I noticed a pack of cake mix that is for Festive Cupcakes and another for festive biscuits, complete with Christmas
decorations. What a great idea for getting together with your children and, if they are allowed, let them take some to school before they break up for the holidays to share with their friends. It could be the start of budding chefs! Before the day, don’t forget that you have to make your puds, Christmas cakes and mince pies now if you’re going to make-ityourself. Buyrite sells all the ingredients (not that the mince pies last that long in our house…). New potatoes, parsnips, Brussels, swede and carrots are all market fresh daily – you won’t find any yellowing, gone-over sprouts here – and to cook your roasties and parsnips you’ll be able to get lard, duck and goose fat. You can get your turkey from Buyrite in all manner of weights and, if you don’t want a whole bird, you can choose from a Harvest turkey crown at 1.6 to 1.8 kilos for €16.95, a 500 gram Bernard Matthews turkey joint for only €6.95 or a
lovely Butterball basted turkey at 2.5 to 3.2 kilo at €14.95. Plus there are pigs in blankets (little sausages wrapped with bacon), and cocktail sized pork sausages.
redcurrant jellies, horseradish, pickled onions, silverskin onions, mixed pickles, piccalilli, gherkins and mustards for your cold cuts for Boxing Day.
For a change you could have a wonderfully tasty cooked ham, or a joint of melt-in-the-mouth Irish topside of beef from 1 to 4 kilos, a gammon joint from 1 to 5 kilos, or an Irish sirloin roast from 1 to 2 kilos. And why not have some giant pork chops like you used to buy in the UK, pork slipper joints (very popular over this last year in the UK with many TV chefs using it in their recipes for dinner parties), or rolled and stuffed belly pork? There are Scotch pies, pork pies and Pukka pies to name but a few. Sausages come in plain good old British pork, pork and tomato, pork and leek, hot and spicy pork, pork and cracked black pepper and British pork and black pudding amongst others. Oh, yes, and don’t forget the bacon and gammon steaks! Plus you can buy all your cranberry and
Buyrite have top quality Christmas puddings from the traditional to those with cranberry and orange liqueur, gluten free ones and one with “hidden mandarin”. If, like me, you can’t eat the usual Christmas puds, we can enjoy triple chocolate pudding all to ourselves – OK, so it is Christmas so you’ll probably have to share! There are Dundee cakes, fruit cakes that are ready-iced or that you can decorate yourself, Yule logs and cakes. Dairy-wise there is British butter, fresh milk, cream, and then their cheeses..… choose from Wensleydale with cranberries for a festive feel, or how about with pineapple? Then there’s Red Leicester, Old Smokey, Brie, Edam, Double Gloucester (including with onion and chives) and of
course, all the different Cheddars. If it was possible to have any room left Buyrite have tins of Roses, Heroes, Quality Street, Liquorice Allsorts, boxes of Milk Tray, Paynes “Just Brazils” in milk and plain chocolate varieties, Galaxy, Mars and Hello Kitty selection boxes and Thorntons selection boxes. There are also jelly babies, Cadbury’s Buttons, and wine gums. What strikes you about Buyrite, apart from the vast selection they have is that the prices are not expensive either. You can
do your weekly shop in its entirety here without risking getting your car bashed as you do in the big supermarket carparks as there’s plenty of parking and it won’t break the bank either – or you can just pop in and not have to queue at the till for hours for a couple of things you find you need. All in all, Buyrite is the local store we all wish we had, and it’s up here in Coin waiting to serve you.

Cats have a high need for protein compared to dogs. Animal-based protein is a necessary component in a cat's diet as it supplies essential amino acids, such as taurine. In addition to protein, your cat requires a proper balance of fats, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and water. Many nutritional experts feel that providing a variety of different diets/foods for your cat will help to provide optimal nutrition. Why do cats like to eat grass? Domestic cats may look for grass, or other greens. Some vets believe it's to supplement their diet in order to clean their
systems of furballs or food that they should not have eaten. Cats may even eat plants out of curiosity. Owners should make sure that any plants that may be accessible to their cats are non-poisonous.

Andalucía: a Gold! natural paradise for all to enjoy Taking place at the Hotel Las Palmeras in Fuengirola next Saturday, December 1st, will be the second "Andalucía, Home Sweet Home" event with many local suppliers from all over Andalucía taking part in the festivities. The event is oriented to the foreign Costa del Sol residents – mainly those from Scandinavia and the UK – and, as it’s specially geared to us, one not to miss! This time, the main topics of this event will be nature and inland tourism, active tourism, hiking, and wellness tourism, as well as a whole host of other things to enjoy. Around twenty companies from Andalucía will come to show you a small sample of the wide range of resources you can find in the region, mainly related to the nature of our area, what you can find inland, and general wellness while living and visiting here.
Andalucía has plenty to offer: an incredible variety of landscapes and geographical contrasts ranging from the snowcapped peaks of the Sierra Nevada to the warm campiñas in the valley of the Guadalquivir, volcanic landscapes like the Tabernas desert, extensive wetlands such as the national park of Doñana, and vast stretches of unspoilt coast and untamed nature. There are over 80 natural areas – two national parks, 24 natural parks, 28 nature reserves and 32 natural sites; places where you can improve your knowledge and education, practise all kinds of sports,or simply while away the hours in a relaxing and quiet atmosphere. Join in the fun and find out what more the area can offer you at Hotel Las Palmeras (Fuengirola) from 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. this Saturday.

Kieran Taylor, the young Taekwondo blackbelt star based in Arroyo, got his season off to a fantastic start last Saturday in Algeciras, when he won Gold at The Copa de Andalucia in both Team Technical Stances and Combat. This was Kieran's first appearance in Spain as an adult and a member of The Spanish National Team and The Benalmadena Club which is coached by Maxi Montiel won "Best Club" at this high profile tournament. Kieran had picked up a knock on his foot whilst training with team mates but this did not stop him from a top quality win. Kieran is without a sponsor for this season and would be happy to meet with any prospective backer who could assist him.richardtaylor1388@ hotmail.com

The train has excelled in reliability and punctuality over the years, but today all that is about to change. A famous rocket designer known as Werner Von Black, has been discovered in his sleeping compartment – Dead! The only question is: Who killed him?
The Plot The Disorientated Express, probably one of the most luxurious trains in the world, is always fully booked. Even now, in 1938, with war looming menacingly on the horizon, her luxury Pullman
Guard A Loo will guide you through the proceedings – then, with the Guard’s help, it is up to you to interrogate the suspects and work out who the murderer is.
The suspects are: SIGMUND FROID – a Cold Austrian Psychoanalyst, with a calm bedside manner who is obsessed with your dreams and sex life!
HEIDI EVIDENCE – a Swiss Bank Clerk, a very beguiling lady with an innocent expression. IVAN EGO – A Russian Inventor, pessimistic and pragmatic to the last. Did you know that approximately one third of the people living in Estepona are from foreign parts? Some live here permanently and others come and go for shorter periods during the year. It is important that the third living here have a voice in the community. To that end an official organisation was formed in 2003 with registration no. 7182 in The Junta de Andalucia. This is the official Foreign Residents' Association in Estepona, which is nonpolitical and non-profit making. It is known as AREME for short. The annual AREME Christmas Fair will be held at The Estepona Palacio de Congresos this Saturday, December 1st from 11am until 2pm.This year thay say they are extremely fortunate to have the voluntary services of the Paraiso Hand Bell Ringers and the CAP Singers who will be performing around mid-day and entertaining everybody with their Christmas music. They will also be handing over cheques to representatives of the charities selected by them for this year. There is plenty
of parking at the back of the Palacio – so no long walks to get to the venue! Many bargains can be obtained at the Table Sales. You can buy yourself scrumptious homemade cakes and scones, oriental delicacies, and the odd pot of jam, marmalade or pickle. You can also buy bargain nearly new second hand clothes, bric a brac, homemade articles, cards, toys and many other interesting items from around the world. Please tell all your friends and acquaintances about AREME and about their monthly coffee mornings and table sales. Why not go along, have a cup of tea, coffee or a soft drink; look around the tables, meet some of the members and see for yourself what AREME can offer you too. Most importantly you can join the Association which could be to your advantage in the future. A member of the Committee will be on hand to help you fill in the application form so you can both join and obtain your membership card at the meeting!

MOVIES AN D DV D S TO WATC H O U T F OR
MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR
SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK Directed by David O. Russell Starring: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro Russell’s movie is a million miles away from his last film, the Oscar-winning boxing drama The Fighter, and has been winning critical plaudits in the US, where it’s being mooted to pick up gongs as the awards season approaches. The film’s key character is Pat Solitano (Cooper), a history teacher who is struggling to cope with his biopolar disorder and the break-down of his marriage after he discovers his wife having an affair with a teaching colleague. So Pat ends up in a mental hospital for eight months and on leaving takes up residence with his parents
Pat Snr (De Niro) and Dolores (Jacki Weaver). His wife may have taken out a restraining order on him, but Pat starts plotting to put his marriage back on track. This may all sound a bit gloomy but the plot is a device for a screwball (literally) comedy. Pat Snr is a rabid gambler who fixates on the fact that his son’s very presence might affect the outcome of football games, while Dolores is driven by anxiety. Into the mix comes young widow Tiffany (Lawrence) who is seeking a new relationship and
seems not to mind that Pat is a bit crackers. Pat agrees to partner Tiffany in a dance competition in a bid to fuel his wife’s jealousy but things start to get disastrously out of control.
UK critics have been rather more split about the plot’s machinations, but there has been enough talk of the movie being the modern day When Harry Met Sally to make it worth a whirl.

You will need to watch your health and learn to slow down and not dance to another’s tune. Take your time and think about things, chew them over, this is because the more relaxed you are, the clearer and stronger you are. There are fears and concerns to deal with, but if you're relaxed and focused you can handle anything. You will be encouraged to look closer at those in your life and your relationship to those persons. Change is something that you want, a part of you craves growth and new life experiences so you reach and you seek and you search, never really knowing where it will all lead. The truth is if you knew how tough it was going to get you never would have tried in the first place but inevitably we must push past what is in front of us. A few surprise events could be occurring due to brave choices and you will find yourself rising to the occasion. A clarity of vision and understanding looms, not that much of it will be that surprising, but it's the inner knowledge and calmness of knowing exactly what you need to do that is important. The things you do you should attempt them with as much skill and precision as possible this week. By the weekend the energy becomes more social, making this a great time to go out and surround yourself with others – have some fun. There is a world of inner questioning that is surfacing at the moment; you may find that your thoughts are deeply tied to a depth of emotion. One word can unlock a sea of feelings, most of which are emotions that you wish to avoid but they do not seem to go away. Your emotional attachment to whatever it was will inevitably either end or transform. You may be feeling a little weathered from a certain storm but you are soon to feel weightless and finally free There is an inner knowing building that affirms you can handle just about anything the universe throws at you. The key to this is remaining true to yourself and not getting drawn into or involved in the battles or arguments of others. Major breakthroughs are likely and these can be changes in career or even a personal re-location. You need a solid structure you can retreat to, to rest and recharge your batteries.
LIBRA
If things don’t go your way the most important factor is getting back up and back into the game. There are times when you just have to shake off the negativity of past events and keep moving forward. Disappointments can be realignments in your long-term journey. Take the time to listen to what others have to say as September 23rd - hidden information is likely to be revealed. Later in the week, focus your attention October 22nd on improving your home life and connections to friends and family.–
SCORPIO
October 23rd November 21st
Lately you could have felt pulled in two different directions but by now one path would have made itself known. This then is probably a period of adjustment that will help to settle elements of the past as well as prepare you for the future. The financial and material areas of your life could need some planning. You are a black and white individual but that is what makes you exciting and allows you to go to extremes, taking things to the full of their potential.
SAGITTARIUS Dreams become solid realities right now and you will be feeling lighter and more energetic than you have for a while. Now is the time to really get out there and try to make things happen, to take those risks and chances you know are right for you, speak up and ask for exactly what you want as others will have a hard time November 22nd - saying no to you. New opportunities tend to appear and this is because you are December 21st reclaiming natural parts of yourself that have been locked away for a while.
CAPRICORN This is what you have been waiting for a new found strength in your stride. It will feel similar to visibly feeling the effects of all those hours spent in the gym. You show up one day and you experience your muscles and lungs working more efficiently. You will simply be able to work longer and harder and not December 22nd - feel the hit as you might otherwise. This will prove to be an exciting time for January 19th you just remember to keep the faith and believe in yourself.

Don’t worry if you missed Stir- Up Sunday this week, you still have time to make that pud and let those flavours infuse. Usually Stir-Up Sunday is the last Sunday before advent begins and this year, it fell on November 25th. It was the day when everyone in the family took a turn to stir the pudding, making a wish while they stirred, and stirring the mixture from East to West to represent the Three Wise Men who visited Baby Jesus.
This week your mind is razor sharp and you are right on the ball, nothing and no one is going to get past you. It allows you to realise how easily you are able to predict others’ behaviour and thereby able to prevent misunderstandings or conflicts from arising. Your natural awareness is at an all time high and used positively will allow you to secure plans and feel more productive in some of your career pursuits.
Remaining in the moment is important right now and living life to its fullest potential. There are likely to be some bumps and challenges to deal with this week, perhaps some left over unexpected chaos that you may have to deal with, the key to this is to remain cool, calm and collected and think your words and actions through very carefully. As the week goes on, you can tell there is more going on than meets the eye but then everything happens for a reason.
This week you cut through all the false pretences over something that you needed to see more clearly. This week you are now unravelling all of the remaining content and also observing and taking personal responsibility. You are building a new foundation of inner knowing, one you can firmly stand upon. Your mind is now racing a million miles an hour as thoughts and the awareness of endless possibilities that are waiting to be discovered.

• • • • • •
100g butter 100g light muscovado sugar 50g walnuts 50g dried cranberries Juice of 1 orange 3tsp orange liqueur
bread
Directions 1. Put dried fruits, dates, cranberries and ginger in pan with orange zest, juice and liqueur. Warm gently for 10 minutes. Then leave to cool. 2. Grease a 1.3 litre pudding basin. Put a small greaseproof paper circle in the base. 3. Beat butter, sugar, eggs and flour then stir in the fruits, breadcrumbs, cinnamon and nuts. 4. Steam pudding for three hours. Either in a slow cooker or pan. Cool. Store for a week or freeze for a month. 5. For the sauce, melt the butter and sugar in
a pan, tip in the walnuts; stir for a few minutes to toast. Add orange juice, liqueur and cranberries. Allow to bubble until thick and creamy. Cool. 6. To serve, steam to warm for 1 hour. Gently warm the walnut sauce. Serve the pudding. Pour over the sauce. 7. Decorate with a sprig of holly, extra liqueur and light! Serves 10. Freezes for up to a year. (Make double for next Christmas!)
It's beginning to get cooler in the evenings so I thought this would be an easy recipe to start the winter warmers off with. Pecans are just hanging off the local trees right now waiting to be eaten.
Baked apples with fruit and nuts Ingredients:
( Serves 4 )
•
4 small cooking apples each weighing around 225gr. 25gr soft dark brown sugar 4 tablespoons sweet mincemeat 25gr flaked almonds or chopped pecans or pine nuts 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Butter for greasing About 150ml apple juice for basting
• • • • • •
Directions Remove the centre core from the apples leaving 5mm (¼ inch) uncut at the bottom. Run the tip of a sharp knife around the circumference of the apple skin – this will stop them bursting. Combine the remaining ingredients except the juice and press into the cavities of the apples where you've removed the core. Place them into a buttered baking
dish in which they fit snuggly and pour in 2tbsp of apple juice. Put in a preheated oven of 190ºC / gas mark 5 for 45mins to 1 hour. At 10-minute intervals, add two more tablespoons apple juice to the bottom of the dish and spoon the juices over the apples.

Smoking 'rots' brain
HAIR, NAILS & BEAUTY
Smoking damages memory, learning and reasoning, according to a study by researchers at King's College London which was published recently in the journal Age and Ageing. To find out if there were links between the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke and the state of the brain, the researchers collected data about the health and lifestyle of a group of over-50s and gave them brain tests, such as making them learn new words or name as many animals as they could in a minute. They were all tested again after four and then eight years. The results showed that the overall risk of a heart attack
or stroke was "significantly associated with cognitive decline" – with those at the highest risk showing the greatest decline. They also showed a "consistent association" between smoking and lower scores in the tests. The researchers said high blood pressure and being overweight also seemed to affect the brain, but to a lesser extent. They said people needed to be aware that lifestyles could
Don’t mix Grapefruit and pills Researchers at the Lawson Health Research Institute in Canada have warned of a "lack of knowledge" about the dangers of mixing some medications with grapefruit, which can cause overdoses of some drugs by stopping the medicines being broken down in the intestines and the liver. The researchers said the number of drugs which have serious side effects when mixed with grapefruit is rapidly increasing – up from 17 in 2008 to 43 in 2012. They included some drugs for a range of conditions including blood pressure, cancer and cholesterollowering statins and those
taken to suppress the immune system after an organ transplant. Chemicals in grapefruit – furanocoumarins – wipe out an enzyme which breaks down the drugs so that much more of the drug escapes the digestive system than the body can handle. The researchers
said: "One tablet with a glass of grapefruit juice can be like taking five or 10 tablets with a glass of water so you can unintentionally go from a therapeutic level to a toxic level just by consuming grapefruit juice." Other citrus fruits such as Seville oranges, often used in marmalade, and limes have the same effect.

damage the mind as well as the body. A spokesman for Alzheimer's Research UK said: "Cognitive decline as we age can develop into dementia, and unravelling the factors that are linked to this decline could be crucial for finding ways to prevent the condition. Followers of the great guitarist are in for a treat
ere’s a new Jimmy Hendrix album about to be released … and his fans will be queueing up to buy it At the ripe old age of just 27, Jimi Hendrix died from drugrelated asphyxia and everybody thought that would be the end of any music being published by the man who became a legend. However, a new album, entitled ‘People, Hell and Angels’ and featuring 12 never-before-released recordings is due out on March 5th, 2013 and holds a whole new dimension to his music.
The new album contains material he was working on without his band – the Jimi Hendrix Experience – in 1968 and 1969, with his official website saying the tracks suggest a totally new experimental direction he was going in including horns, keyboard, percussion and a second guitar. The cover, featuring Hendrix in a military-style jacket and scarf is in monochrome and
Rolling Stone Magazine said in an article the Hendrix had been considering these new sounds for ‘First Rays Of The New Rising Sun’ – the planned double album that was to follow Electric Ladyland.
developing the previously undesirable technique of guitar amplifier feedback, and had his initial success in Europe rather than the United States.
Hendrix is generally considered to have been one of the most important musicians of the 20th century.
Hendrix was a headline act at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970.

Nicked Organ transplant Comic TV star Simon Brodkin thought it would be funny to stage himself stealing one of his own DVDs during a signing at the HMV store in London’s Oxford Street. He was chased around the store while being incharacter as his chav creation of South London hoodlum Lee Nelson, by an actor dressed up as a policeman. However, as they ran out on to the street, they were spotted by a real community police officer who then arrested him and marched him back into the store under the watchful eyes of passers-by and people on buses who had stopped to watch. Not so funny now, eh?!

The weekly rates for Asylum Support, which is administered by the Home Office, are £36.62 for a single person aged 18 or over, £43.94 for a single parent and £72.52 for a couple. This includes a spouse rate equivalent to £35.90 per week. The full basic State Pension is currently £107.45 per week. A pension of up to £64.40 per week can be paid for a spouse or civil partner depending on for example, the age of the spouse or civil partner and any entitlement to pensions they may have in their own right. Many pensioners also receive an additional State Pension, also known as the State Earnings-Related Pension
La Carihuela factory, a trade union and the Young Communist League (Battersea branch). All my life I have been marching (80 years of it) against wars, unemployment, homelessness, poverty, debt and hunger, with my banners and slogans and, as Muriel
has said, it has changed nothing, we still have them all. So, what does Muriel recommend now? Rioting like the youngsters did in England and get put in jail for two years for stealing a packet of chewing gum? Or, better still, Revolution?!!!

Orion e Hunter Of all the constellations in the night sky the most easily recognised must be Orion, The Hunter.
By email amount of £5,900.40. Pensioners who get the ‘couples rate’ of £171.85, comprising a single pensioner’s full rate of basic State Pension of £107.45 and State Pension based on a spouse’s or civil partner’s National Insurance contribution record of £64.40 and who also receive an annual Winter Fuel Payment of £200, could receive £9,136.20 up to the age of 79 and a higher amount from age 80 of £9,249.20. Many pensioners also receive additional State Pension as mentioned earlier and/or a workplace pension. Workplace and private pension contributions are given generous tax privileges by the Government. Some pensioners may also qualify for Pension Credit, which can top up income to £142.70 a week (£7,420.40 a year) for single pensioners and to £217.90 a week (£11,330.80 a year) for couples. These amounts may be higher if pensioners are disabled, have caring responsibilities or certain housing costs such as mortgage interest payments. Many pensioners also receive help with Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit.
Scheme (SERPS) or State Second Pension. The average payment at March 2011 was £26 a week. For somebody with a long working life and above average earnings, the additional State Pension can exceed £100 a week. Usually, a spouse or civil partner from outside the UK is subject to a requirement that they have no recourse to public funds for the first two years that they are in the UK. Once a spouse or civil partner has been in the UK for two years, they can apply to the Home Office for settlement. If settlement is granted, they are no longer subject to immigration control and will have access to public funds. On the matter of the ‘hardship allowance’, I must explain that this is not a weekly payment. If a person is in hardship because of non-payment of an income, that person may qualify for help from the Social Fund. Amounts paid by the Social Fund will vary according to their circumstance. In 2012/13, a single pensioner with a full basic State Pension of £107.45 per week and an annual Winter Fuel Payment of £200 could receive £5,787.40 a year up to the age of 79 and from the age of 80, a higher
Brian Johnston Benalmadena I do agree with the writer in this week’s Opinion and Comment comparing the downtrodden British pensioners’ poor treatment and immigrants’ much better treatment by the British Government being
completely unfair, but it is more the fault of the Labour Party who allowed this disparity to increase during 13 years of misrule. This situation is an absolute disgrace.
Caroline James I read with interest recently the letter about cyclists on the roads here in Spain. The other day I was coming back from shopping, stopped at red traffic lights with people crossing from the opposite

side of the road when a cyclist shot past me on my inside, totally against the red signal and very nearly took out the pedestrians. These people should be prosecuted the same as motorists would be!

rion dominates the winter sky with his ‘bow tie’ or ‘butterfly’ shape of stars that are some of the brightest stars in the sky. At this time of year Orion can be seen rising in the east at around 9.00pm and during the night he stands upright passing right across the southern part of the sky. He is one of the more interesting constellations and each star has its own story to tell. tarting with the bright red coloured star in the upper lefthand corner, this is Betelgeuse a super sized red giant. Betelgeuse is so huge that if it were placed where our Sun is then its outer edge would reach almost to the planet Saturn. Betelgeuse is a ‘live fast die young’ type of star. It is only about 10 million years old compared to the Sun’s six billion years, but its massive size has caused it to use up much of its fuel and it is expected to explode as a supernova any time between now and 1 million years hence. It may have already exploded and as it is 640 light years away we are simply waiting for the image to get here. ove to the top right-hand star Bellatrix; a blue/white coloured star about 250 light years away and over eight times bigger than the sun. Bellatrix is the Latin for female warrior and you may remember it was also the character’s name played by Helena Bonham-Carter in the Harry Potter movies. ontinue clockwise to the bottom right-hand star, this is Rigel a super bright star almost 900 light years away. Rigel is possibly 100 thousand times more luminous than the Sun and about 75 times the radius. It is the sixth brightest star in the night sky. Its dazzling blue/white colour tells astronomers that it is a very hot star with a surface temperature of more than 12,0000 C. he faint star in the bottom left-hand corner is called Saith that comes from an Arabic name meaning sword of the giant. Saith is about 650 light years away, which is almost the same distance as Betelgeuse. From Saith Betelgeuse must be an amazing sight at only 10 light years away from it. ow look at the three stars in a perfect straight line crossing the centre of Orion. From left to right they are called Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. Although these three stars appear to be equal in brightness and distance they are massively different in size, brightness and distance from us, it is

merely a line of sight effect that causes them to appear as Orion’s belt. f you look very carefully below Orion’s belt where his sword would be hanging you will notice that the stars here seem a little fuzzy round the edges. This is the famous M42 Orion nebula – a huge gas cloud where new stars are being formed. Through binoculars the nebula is quite clear but with a telescope it is a splendid sight with hundreds of stars shining through the cloud. The Orion nebula is 1500 light years away and about 24 light years across. It is the closest star-forming region to us and probably one of the most studied and photographed deep sky objects by amateur and professional astronomers alike. ow that you can recognise Orion you can use his figure to guide you to other stars and constellations. Follow the three stars in his belt downwards to the left and you will come across the brightest star in the night sky, Sirius in the constellation of Canis Major, the great dog of Orion. Sirius is one of the closest stars to us at only 8.6 light years away it also happens to be twice the size of the Sun and 25 times brighter. Sirius was a very important star to the ancient Egyptians as its first appearance before sunrise heralded the annual flooding of the Nile. The season following the star's appearance came to be known as the Dog Days of summer. ollow the stars of Orion’s belt upwards this time to find Aldebran the red eye of Taurus the Bull bearing down on Orion. Use your binoculars to scan the area around Aldebran to see the Hyades cluster of hundreds of stars an amazing sight!

Carlos Tevez banned from driving
Manchester City footballer Carlos Tevez has been banned from driving for failing to provide information when he was stopped for speeding in Lancashire. The Premier League striker was stopped by police for breaking the speed limit in Morecambe on 28th March. He had been in the town playing in a reserve team game. Tevez, from Prestbury in Cheshire, was given an interim ban by Lancaster magistrates. He will have the length of his suspension set in December.
F1’s End of season thriller in Brazil Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso were both trying on Sunday to become the youngest three-time world champion in history. The two had to battle changing conditions, both on the track and with the weather, at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Vettel almost had a race ending mishap within the first couple of corners, as homeboy Bruno Senna ran into the back of his Red Bull. Vettel though kept his cool, let his car roll backwards letting every other car pass before spinning it round and starting to reel them all in again. It took Vettel less than 16 laps to climb from last place on the track to sixth, an achievement in itself but add to that scenario the fact that this was probably one of the most difficult races in terms of track conditions that the drivers could have faced, and it makes it all the more remarkable. Drivers and cars were slipping and sliding all over the track and the choice of tyres was constantly changing. Lewis Hamilton from pole had made a great start and with Button and Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg, the three of them opting to remain on slicks, pulled out to a
huge lead, all three of them taking turns to lead until a safety car undid all their good work. At the restart Hulkenberg pulled away and Hamilton gave chase after passing Button. Hamilton continued to push Hulkenberg who eventually lost it in the slippery conditions and Hamilton was back in the lead. The Force India driver recovered though and managed to keep Hamilton within range, and at two thirds distance the German made his move as the two of them were lapping slower drivers, Hulkenberg though lost it under braking and his car slid into Hamilton’s wrecking his wheel. Hamilton was forced to retire in this his final race for McLaren, while Hulkenberg was issued with a drive through penalty. That left Jenson Button out in front and on his own. Fernando Alonso was doing all he could to try and make this his third title, ably assisted by the fast
Hopes rise that Aston Martin deal will be struck this week India's Mahindra and Mahindra hopes to strike a deal to buy Aston Martin by the end of the week, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said. Mahindra is said to have topped an offer for Aston Martin from Italian private equity fund InvestIndustrial. "There are a lot of moving parts here," the source told Reuters on Monday, adding that an initial 40 percent stake could rise to 50 percent for a total price unlikely to top $400 million. Kuwait's Investment Dar denied on Sunday that it is reviewing rival bids from Mahindra and InvestIndustrial for 50 percent of the UK luxury sports car brand. However, sources said the bidders were wrangling over issues on management control. Recouping investment
Investment Dar led a group that bought Aston Martin from Ford Motor Co. in 2007 for 479 million pounds sterling, or $925 million at the time. Analysts have said that Investment Dar, which went to the market for a $1 billion debt restructuring last year, hoped to recoup what it had sunk into Aston Martin – meaning a value for the firm of about $1 billion. Mahindra owns Korea's Ssangyong SUV maker and is the world's biggest tractor maker. It has seen India's Tata Motor do well in buying Jaguar Land Rover four years ago.
paced Masa who was doing a sterling job in helping his team mate. But all Vettel had to do was stay no worse than seventh. Alonso finished in second place, with Felipe Masa in third place. Alonso looked shocked for several minutes after the race, keeping his helmet on and staring into space, but he collected his emotions, knowing he had done all he could.
“First of all, I feel very proud of my team, and very proud of the position we did. We didn’t lose it here in Brazil,” said Alonso, referring to races earlier in the season in which he was knocked off the track by other drivers and scored no points. “But this is a sport and when you do something with your heart, you have to be proud.” “It was one of the most difficult races we have
driven, with those conditions,” Alonso added. “You feel as if you are with the wrong tyre on every lap.” Masa to was visibly distraught after the race and moved to tears on the podium. Even though he lost the season’s title, Alonso still was proud of how the year had gone. “It was by far the best season of my career, and I will remember 2012 like some kind of a dream
season,” he said. “I didn’t win the title, but I won so much respect from everybody.” Vettel said “It is very difficult to find the words after the race today. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong.” “To win that third title here, where one of my greatest idols, Ayrton Senna, was from, it is very difficult to imagine I join him and other great names by winning three successive titles,” he said. “My radio was not working, I was crying and you didn’t hear that, and I am very happy about that. I just can’t find the right words to describe how I feel right now.” It was Senna who held the previous record for the youngest world champion; he took his third title at 31 in 1991, when he was just a couple of months older than Alonso is now.

Renault to create 1300 jobs in Spain Renault plans to create 1,300 jobs in recession-hit Spain under a scheme to boost production at its local plants and after a deal with unions, the French carmaker said. Renault will assign its Palencia plant in northern Spain two new vehicle platforms, one a derivative of the other, and shared with Nissan, the automaker said in a statement on Wednesday. The new platforms cover four vehicle bodies, allowing Renault to increase total annual production by about 40,000 units to 280,000. Over the 20142015 period, production at the company's engine and transmission plants in the country will rise to nearly 1.4 million units a year, the statement also said. The Valladolid body assembly plant will also benefit from the "competitive performance reached through the recent work force negotiations,

which extend and enhance the facility's options with regard to future assignments," the automaker added. The Spanish announcement comes as Renault opened negotiations on a French new labour deal it wants to seal by the end of January. Renault has demanded pay and working time
concessions from its French workers and warned that the outcome of talks may affect future production plans, unions said earlier this month. Faced with a sustained slump in the European car market, Renault wants to align French wage and production costs with its plant in Palencia, Spain, and Japanese affiliate

Wayne’s Poker Tips A court in Spain ruled in November that PokerStars has operated legally in the country since it began offering its services in 2001. Spanish gambling giant Codere claimed that PokerStars operated unlawfully prior to the country's new gambling regulation in June 2012. Codere argued that online gambling operators were negatively impacting the firm’s land-based operations by offering services to Spanish gamblers without state authorisation. However, according to a press release issued by PokerStars, a Barcelona court affirmed PokerStars’ position that it operated lawfully in the country prior to June 2012 because "the lack of
regulation meant that there was no relevant law preventing such activity". “This ruling confirms the legal advice we have been given and which we have followed in Spain for years,” said Paul Telford, group general counsel for PokerStars. “We are very pleased the court agreed with our position and look forward to continuing to provide our licensed poker services as the leading brand in the Spanish market.” “The Barcelona court judgment is absolutely clear in its conclusion that PokerStars has always operated in Spain according to the law," added Antonio Vázquez-Guillén, partner at Allen & Overy, PokerStars' counsel for the case. If you do bluff keep them small, this way when you hit the board hard you have more chance of being paid off. Malaga get back to their Best Malaga 4 - 0 Valencia After the great draw in Russia in the midweek tie in the Champions League against Zenit, Malaga entertained Valencia. goal was busy keeping Valencia in the game making saves from Joaquin and a stunner from Saviola with the goal at his mercy. Saviola though got his richly deserved goal in the 74th minute firing in low from the edge of the box. Malaga were irrepressable. Santa Cruz slotted home after another great move with nine minutes left to play. Valencia's night went from bad to worse when Rami got sent off with six minutes to go. Isco rounded off the rout with another great finish in injury time to send the Roseleda faithful home happy and move Malaga back to 4th place in La Liga. Manager Pellegrini said: “It was Malaga's best performance” – and how true that was. This week the Copa del Rey as Malaga go into a busy schedule of important games. Report by Scott Forbes

England bounce back to set up series England fought back from their first Test loss at Ahmedabad against India to win the second match on the fourth day by 10 wickets to level the series 1−1 at the Wankhede Stadium. On the back of Pietersen’s brilliant 186 and Cook’s fourth successive century in as many matches as England Test captain, Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann exploited a spinners’ pitch expertly for a 10-wicket victory in little more than three days at the Wankhede Stadium. Resuming the day at 117/7, India could only hold out for 11.1 overs and manage 25 more runs before being bowled out for 142, giving England a target of mere 57 runs. Gautam Gambhir, who held the innings together on Sunday, tried holding it out but ran out of partners. Harbhajan Singh (6)

Tottenham fan stabbed in Rome is visited by Lazio president Lotito Claudio Lotito has visited the Tottenham fan who was stabbed on the eve of last week's Europa league match in Rome. Lotito presented Ashley Mills with a Lazio shirt bearing his name during the visit to San Camillo Hospital. Mills was hospitalised after an attack reported to have involved more than 40 assailants at The Drunken Ship bar in Rome. One Italian newspaper described the attack as "urban warfare". The match, attended by former Lazio and Spurs player Paul Gascoigne, was marred by alleged anti-Semitic chants.
