The Duchess delivers The Duchess of Cambridge’s admission into King Edward VII hospital in central London on Monday prompted an unexpected announcement of her pregnancy. She is being treated for severe morning sickness and is expected to remain in hospital for several days. Severe morning sickness, or hyperemesis gravidarum, causes severe nausea and vomiting, and the main danger is dehydration. The condition can require supplementary hydration and nutrients. The duchess is being cared for by gynaecologist

Not Bah humbug! This week I have to start with apologies. Firstly an apology to all you Scots out there – we totally missed St. Andrews Day and it won’t (hopefully) happen again. Secondly to all the people who love Christmas – and, yes, that does actually include me! I wrote a bit bah humbug in my column last week as the office was absolutely freezing – actually it still is because we’re waiting for Endesa to flick some switch or another to give us enough power to have heaters on and not blow all our computers at the same time. We will be here this

e Duchess delivers Christmas, last year you may remember we were in Australia, so I’m looking forward to putting up the rest of the deckies at home and having a great time. Last year was the holidayof-a-lifetime so it’ll take some beating but, there’s lots to see and do all along the coast so we certainly won’t be getting bored and will be spending the time with loads of friends. On another note, does anybody know anything about the model aeroplane flying club in Coin starting up again. Rumour has it they’ve been given an “airstrip” and a friend of mine wants to know about it. Any information please send to info@thenewsonline.es for my attention. Thanks. Last weekend we went to the Speed Finance Cheese and wine “do”, the Irish Card and Party Shop “do” and Linda at Muffin’s 60th birthday party. All were great evenings so thanks for inviting us!

The palace would not be drawn on when the royal couple had become aware of the pregnancy, only saying "recently", but the duchess is thought to be under 12 weeks pregnant. The Queen, Prince Charles and other members of the Royal Family had been told about the pregnancy only earlier in the day. Prince William's brother, Prince Harry, who is serving with the Army in Afghanistan, was informed by email. The baby, whatever its sex, will be third in line to the throne after Prince Charles and Prince William. In October 2011,

Commonwealth leaders agreed to change succession laws so that the daughter of any future UK monarch will have the same right to the throne as a son. Under current laws, if a girl was born first to the couple, she would lose her place in line to the throne if a boy was born later. The law has not yet been altered but a Cabinet Office spokesman said formal consent was expected "very shortly" and ministers have indicated that the legislation will apply to any royal births from the date of the leaders' decision.

National News Opposition to challenge government pension decision The opposition and the trade unions have announced their intention to force the government to backtrack on its decision not to increase state pensions in line with the inflation rate, which has exceeded the official forecast for the year. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Friday went back on an election campaign pledge to compensate retirees for the loss of purchasing power, on the grounds that meeting this year’s government deficit target had to come first. The leader of the main opposition Socialist Party, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba,

on Monday reiterated his party’s intention of taking the matter to the Constitutional Court, backed by Plural Left electoral platform, formally known as the United Left. On Sunday, the CCOO union said it would ask the ombudsman, Soledad Becerril, to appeal against the decision with the Constitutional Court. On Monday, the UGT union announced a campaign to advise pensioners how to file individual complaints with the Social Security system. Article 48 of the General Law of Social Security

stipulates that pensioners should be compensated for the difference between the government’s official inflation target and the actual figure. The consumer price index was up an annual 2.9 per cent in November, from an expected one per cent. Next year, pensioners drawing less than €1,000 will get a raise of two per cent and those drawing more than that will get a one per cent raise. If it complied with Article 48, the government would have to pay out a further €4 billion, which would have scuppered its efforts to reduce the public deficit.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy

Rajoy said Sunday that the “decision on pensions was imposed by reality not Brussels,” while the secretary general of the ruling Popular Party (PP), María Dolores de Cospedal, called the Socialists “hypocrites” for attacking the government’s decision, conveniently forgetting that they had frozen pensions in 2011 when they were in power.

Unemployment figures up again Another 74,296 people joined the dole queue in November, bringing to total number of jobless to 4,907,817, according to Employment Ministry figures released on Tuesday. Most of the jobs lost were in the services sector, agriculture and industry, with unemployment dropping in the construction by 2,271 or 0.03 per cent. Andalucia and the Balearic Islands were the regions with the highest rises while unemployment dropped by 3,101 in Valencia. Employment Minister Fatima Bañez said the figures were “bad” but insisted the government was “working every day to change the situation”. She said she was “convinced” this could be achieved with the labour reforms made so far.

Iberia strikes announced

The former head of the Spanish equivalent of the CBI, Gerardo Díaz Ferrán, was arrested on Monday on charges of concealing assets and money laundering. Díaz Ferrán is also accused of fraudulent bankruptcy and syphoning off assets, as well as using the proceeds from this to channel €4.9 million to Switzerland. At the start of the investigation, the High Court ordered an embargo of the assets of Díaz Ferrán, who declared himself

personally bankrupt after being unable to meet demands for €417 million when his Marsans travel group went bankrupt. The National Police’s money-laundering squad also detained eight other people, including the liquidator of Marsans, Ángel de Cabo, and carried out raids in Madrid and

Valencia. They found €150,000 in cash and one kilo of gold at Díaz Ferrán’s home in Madrid, and confiscated €1 million at Cabo’s home in Valencia. They also took 11 luxury vehicles from a warehouse belonging to Cabo in Valencia. Díaz Ferrán was president of the Spanish

Confederation of Business Organisations (CEOE) from 2007 to 2010. Marsans declared itself bankrupt in the summer of 2010, with debts of €400 million and leaving 4,700 workers on the street. As his business empire collapsed around him, Díaz Ferrán stepped down as chairman of the CEOE in October that year.

Shipwreck treasure displayed Only a small portion of the treasure– estimated to be worth $500m – from a ship that sank more than 200 years ago has been displayed by the authorities in Madrid. The Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes galleon sank off Portugal's coast near the straits of Gibraltar in 1804 with a cargo which included more than

500,000 silver coins aboard. Spain won a five-year legal dispute to claim ownership for the treasure found by the Florida-based Odyssey Marine Exploration. After it has been fully catalogued – a process that began when the treasure arrived from Florida in February – the silver treasure will be put on display in Spain's museum

of underwater archaeology in Cartagena. So far, experts have counted 574,553 silver coins and 212 gold coins, as well as other items. The metals were mined and the coins minted in the Andes, from places that are now in Bolivia, Chile and Peru.

Unions representing most workers at iberia have announced six days of strikes immediately before the Christmas holidays in a protest against the company's plans to lay off 4,500 staff. The stoppages by iberia ground staff and cabin crews will be held on december 14th and from december 17th to 21st. The merged British airways and iberia, international airlines Group, plans to cut 23% of the Spanish company's staff, saying the carrier is "in a fight for survival". The pilots' union, Sepla, is not among the six unions backing the strike.

A study published by the Global Terrorism Index has compiled the figures over the past decade. The index ranks and compares 158 countries over a 10-year period to shed light on the impact of terrorism, reporting that the biggest rise took place between 2005-2007, driven by events in Iraq. Pakistan, India and Afghanistan accounted for 12%, 11% and 10% of global terrorist incidents respectively from 2002 to 2009, the report said, while Thailand, the Philippines and Russia also accounted for a notable portion at 5%, 4%, and 4% respectively. The study showed that fatal attacks in Western Europe

have decreased since 2002 but it still had 19 times more deaths than the US – although the time-frame means the 9/11 attacks of 2001 are not included. North America was highlighted as the region least likely to suffer a terrorist incident, followed by Western Europe and Latin America. Only 31 nations did not experience a terrorist attack between 2002 and 2011, the study revealed. The study says al-Qaeda is much weakened and responsible for only one of 4,564 attacks carried out

The 2008 Mumbai terror attacks

during 2011. However this does not include al-Qaeda's affiliates such as those in Yemen and North Africa which are responsible for hundreds of other deaths. The report said: "The overall global trend does

give some hope for optimism as the steep increase in terrorist activity experienced from 2003 to 2007 has halted, however the deteriorating situation in Syria and other future possible conflicts in the Middle-East could reverse the situation."

Nato to approve missiles request Nato is set to approve the deployment of Patriot missile interceptors to defend Turkey's border with Syria, at a meeting of the 28-member alliance's foreign ministers in Brussels following a request from Turkey. A Nato team has already visited a number of sites in Turkey in preparation for the deployment of Patriot batteries, which could be used to shoot down any Syrian missiles or warplanes that stray over the border. However, any deployment – possibly supplied by the US,

Germany or the Netherlands – could take weeks. Syrian opposition fighters have reportedly made dramatic gains recently, and several government mortar shells – aimed at rebel targets close to the border – have landed across its 560-mile border with Turkey. Although the head of the Arab League Nabil al-Arabi said on Monday that the Syrian government could fall "any time", it still holds the capital, parts of the second city Aleppo, and

other centres. Also on Monday, the United Nations said it was pulling "all non-essential

international staff" out of Syria, with as many as 25 out of 100 international staff expected to leave this week.

Tunnel inspections ordered the government has ordered emergency inspections of road tunnels across the country following a deadly roof collapse west of tokyo on Sunday. nine people were confirmed dead after concrete panels collapsed and started a fire in the Sasago tunnel. Officials from the highway operator suggested that metal rods securing the concrete panels may have loosened. the ministry of land, infrastructure, transport and tourism has ordered highway operators to carry out emergency inspections at 49 other tunnels on roads managed by the government. japan's highway network has more than 1,500 tunnels and officials estimate that about a quarter of these are more than 30 years old. Repsol moves against Argentina The Repsol oil company, which had its assets in Argentina seized in April, has taken its case to the World Bank's arbitration body in Washington. The Argentine government nationalised Repsol's subsidiary, YPF, accusing the company of under-investing in oil production. Repsol rejected the allegations and described the action as "expropriation". It is

requesting compensation for its losses and also wants the World Bank's International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) to rule YPF's nationalisation illegal. Before the Argentine government's move, Repsol had 57.4% of YPF's shares, and estimates its assets were worth some $10.5bn (£6.5bn), but Argentina rejects the valuation. In 2010

Argentina imported fuel for the first time since YPF – Argentina's biggest oil company – was privatised in 1993. President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner blamed Repsol for draining YPF of its resources since acquiring a controlling stake in the 1990s and not investing enough to cope with growing internal demand.

Can Britain have a free press after Leveson?

War trophy SAS man released on appeal

Often events in Britain have a trickle down effect on other parts of the world and that might have a lot to do with Britain’s colonial past and the desire within the Commonwealth to promote common good.

The SAS serviceman jailed for illegally possessing a pistol given to him in Iraq has been released from jail after winning an appeal. Sergeant Danny Nightingale was originally serving 18 months in a military prison, but three appeal judges cut the term to a 12-month suspended sentence, ordering the soldier’s release. It was reported that the soldier had been injured at the time of his return to the UK and that his bags had been packed for him by a colleague. There was a spirited press campaign in Britain against the original sentence and over 100,000 people signed a petition calling for Sergeant Nightingale’s release.

Certainly all eyes are on Britain at the moment following the publication of Lord Justice Leveson’s press inquiry findings. Freedom of the press has been a bench-mark of social progress and has long been taken for granted in Britain, a leading advocate of free speech. But now the irresponsible activities of some newspapers have led to a review of how we do things. There is a national debate going on and there are deep concerns. Maria Miller, Culture Secretary, has the unenviable task of dealing with the nuts and bolts of any change as it is not a straightforward matter. She believes that the proposals put forward by Lord Justice Leveson following his 16month inquiry into press ethics can be embraced without giving a new press watchdog body statutory backing. The Government is badly split on the issue and the Labour opposition is supporting statutory underpinning of a new regulatory body that can impose fines of as much as

£1 million. Prime Minister David Cameron has serious misgivings about legislative action and wants newspapers to be given sufficient time to come forward with proposals on how they might put their house in order. Maria Miller has suggested it would be difficult to frame new statutory requirements in law without threatening press freedom, and this is the nub of the matter. She and her Prime Minister would appear to be in the political minority and past victims of the press insist that full implementation of the Leveson report is the minimum that they will accept. Lord Leveson has condemned a culture of reckless and outrageous journalism. Certainly there would appear to be agreement that the former Press Complaints Council was a sham, run by newspapers, that proved unable to address the concerns of the great majority of reasonable people. The question now is can Britain find a solution to this impasse without allowing the reckless and outrageous dismantling of a free press?

Tourists There is expected to be an increase in overseas visitors to Britain next year and the amount they spend could rise to a record £19 billion. VisitBritain, the tourism organisation, said numbers for 2013 would increase by three per cent – an extra one million visitors. The US and Europe remain the biggest contributors to tourism income but experts warn that financial problems in the Eurozone introduce an element of uncertainty to tourism forecasts.

United go three points clear at the top Manchester United are now three points clear at the top of English soccer’s Premier League as Manchester City were held to a draw by Everton. United narrowly won a sevengoal thriller against Reading 4-3. Chelsea and Tottenham are now ten points off United in third and fourth place. Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat by talented Swansea and are now tenth in the table. Down at the bottom new manager Harry Redknapp saw his Queen’s Park Rangers side get a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, but the general consensus is that he has a lot to do to turn the club’s fortunes around.

Jose Paulo Da Silveria who was wearing a pink outfit and horned mask at the time, said he had not intended to disrupt the parade at the Cenotaph in Bristol city centre.

A youth has been sentenced to four months' detention for throwing a homeless man's rabbit into a river.

The animal's owner, John Byrne, had been begging on Dublin's O'Connell Bridge when his pet Barney was snatched from his arms and callously thrown into the River Liffey.

Byrne, who has been living on the streets for 23 years, said he was in shock when he saw his pet swimming around in circles, looking up at him.

The 37-year-old risked his life by jumping in after his beloved pet and giving him the kiss of life before both were rescued by firefighters.

"I wasn't going to leave him there," he said. "I had to get him, I had to jump in to get him. Barney died in my arms. I got him under the bridge and gave him the kiss of life."

Gary Kearney pleaded guilty at Dublin District Court to animal cruelty and torture.

Within days he was given a Compassionate Citizen Award for going above and beyond the call of duty to help an animal in need.

The 20-year-old, who is originally from Crumlin, also admitted breach of the peace during the incident on July 3, 2011. Sentencing Kearney, Judge Bryan Smyth said it was a serious matter.

His story touched the hearts of thousands of people nationwide, with many offering donations and food.

Outside the court, Mr

The 38-year-old's lawyer said he suffers from psychiatric problems and was not protesting against the ceremony. Da Silveria claims he stumbled upon the service accidentally on his way to College Green. He said: "I apologise for the distress but I wasn't really thinking. I ran into the middle of this thing and I didn't realise what was going on. I just came down from Nelson Street and I don't remember seeing any restrictions and no one was stopping me from carrying on. It was only when I saw the photographs in the newspaper that I realised what was going on." He was fined £65 and was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victims' surcharge.

Well, if you live in Herne Bay, Kent, it seems that it is anyway. The town’s Christmas tree lights were switched on recently by pantomime stars Gareth Gates and Toya Wilcox but instead of “oohs and ahhs” the tree was booed by around 100 people who had turned up to witness the scene that had been billed as “spectacular”.

lights and a few decorations up in my shop and it definitely looks better than these lights. We were asked to keep our shops open until 7pm but everyone left at 5.45pm. Christmas tree lights are supposed to put you in the mood for shopping but no one will want to spend money here. The lights are a waste of money because they look terrible."

The tree has so few branches, it looks like it forgot to grow up properly and the lights hardly reach the top causing it to be slammed as “the worst Christmas Tree in Britain” this year. Well, so far anyway.

Steve Warrener, a sports shop owner, said: "I think it must have been embarrassing for the council. There were a lot of people there and we had two stars in Gareth Gates and Toyah Willcox. What must they have thought? There was no wow factor there at all. I just walked away."

Shop owners were stunned into saying that the abysmal display may damage their seasonal trade and was a waste of local tax-payers’ money, while one said that he had more lights on in his shop window than were on the tree. Greengrocer Stan Truelove, 57, said: "It took me an hour to put some

Canterbury City Council have now launched a consultation over the Christmas tree lights. A spokesman said: "The display in Herne Bay this year is the same as last year's, with the exception

of some netting. Consultation on Christmas lights will start with businesses soon and we'll be keen to talk to those traders who are showing an interest in the display in their towns." Coastal Towns’ manager Chris West said: "There were more than a thousand people and it was bigger crowd than in Whitstable." Bet they were more disappointed than the crowd in Whitstable too but, you just have to feel sorry for the poor tree, don’t you? written by Kym Wickham

Local News Award for dunes protection group

Since it was founded in 2004, the Asociacion Pro Dunas Bahia de Marbella swam against the current as it tried to convince people that the dunes were a treasure that could not be valued in monetary terms. They were spurred into action by then Mayor Jesus Gil’s plan to build a beach club in the area. The 160 members managed to collect 800

your

signatures in just a few days and stopped the project from going ahead. Largely thanks to their efforts, the dunes were eventually declared a natural monument. They are currently working on a reforestation project but took time off to celebrate the Andalucia Environment Award they have received in recognition of the work they have done – not only to save the dunes but to

make people more environmentally aware. The Association’s secretary and spokesperson, Susanna Stamm, expressed satisfaction with the recognition of work that continues, despite the difficulties. But she regretted the fact that “most of the group are older foreigners and we have very few young people”.

Search for British pederast stepped up The police have extended their search for a British pederast who tried to kidnap a 12-year-old girl in Velez-Malaga to cover the whole province. The girl was walking home from school past the town’s law courts on November 19th when a silver grey Peugeot 106 pulled up alongside her. The driver got out and pushed the girl into the car but she managed to escape through the passenger door, which was not locked. Her family only reported the incident to the police four days later, saying they had doubted her story would be taken seriously because there had been no witnesses. However, the police checked the CCTV cameras at the law courts and found images to back the girl’s story. The cameras did not get a clear picture of the man and the girl was only able to describe him as “older”, but she remembered that the car had been clipped by a passing vehicle when the man drove away. Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Memories

B

ob Mitchell’s description of me as Spain’s answer to Margaret Thatcher in his letter last week stirred up a lot of memories of the adventures I had while she was making her bid for power and I was a comfortable distance away in Venezuela. For the record, the only thing Maggie and I have in common is the fact that we both went to grammar school. Everything else in our lives is poles apart. When she was elected PM in May 1979, I was busy consoling several of the leading lights of the PRV-FALN (Venezuelan Revolutionary Party-Armed Forces of National Liberation) as the revolution they’d given their lives to died around them.

I

had met Douglas Bravo, the founder of the PRV-FALN, in a house in Wimbledon in 1976. He was introduced to me as Juan and I was not told he was the guerrilla leader who nearly brought about the revolution in Venezuela in the 1960s. He and his wife Argelia, who were hiding in Paris and Milan at the time, were visiting the man who was to become my partner and were interested in me – an Amnesty International activist – because I was about to visit Venezuela.

A

mnesty at the time knew there political prisoners in Venezuela but that was about all. Douglas and Argelia wanted me to bring as much information back with me as possible and gave me the names of contacts who could help me collect it and how to reach them. Before I left London, my “controller” at Amnesty gave me all sorts of tips and advice about how to collect info on political prisoners in a hostile environment. So off I went, made my contacts, and drew up a list of some 200 political prisoners, most of whom were being held in a military barracks in Caracas. They were all exguerrilla fighters and Amnesty couldn’t adopt them as prisoners of conscience. However, they were all being held without trial on the charge of “military rebellion” and that was something Amnesty could complain about. I visited one of them – Diego Salazar who was to become “my” political prisoner for the next two years – the weekend before I left Caracas. What an experience. I was escorted into the jail – which had been a convent in colonial times – by a young soldier carrying a submachine-gun casually over his arm. He took out a huge key, opened the door, then clanged it shut behind me. I walked round a corner straight into bedlam – a huge hall packed with the prisoners’ families and lots of kids running amok. It was a scene that became very familiar after I returned to Venezuela the following year.

Fawning over Rajoy

M

eanwhile, Argelia had returned to Caracas – she wasn’t on the state security’s most wanted list as her husband was – the first summer I was there and I became very friendly with her and her family. Her husband was in Paris, where I visited him several times that winter before returning to Caracas in June 1977.

I

could write a book about my experiences of visiting Venezuelan political prisoners. I only had one female political who was being held in a jail about an hour’s drive from Caracas. On my first visit, the little old lady on the desk looked through my handbag quite thoroughly but every time I visited after that she would wave me through without looking up from the newspaper she was invariably reading.

M

y happiest memory is of the six campesinos from eastern Venezuela who had “disappeared” after being accused of providing food to a small guerrilla group still active in the area. A Jesuit priest reported to me that three campesinos had disappeared and I set in process what Amnesty calls an Urgent Action. This involved sending their names and the details we had from the telex in my partner’s office at midnight one Saturday – all very cloak and dagger given that we were both under surveillance at the time. Amnesty then passed on the info asking members all over the world to send telegrams to the president, the defence and justice ministers and all the main newspapers in Venezuela. The following Wednesday, when I next visited my prisoners in the Caracas jail, they told me how several reporters had turned up on the Monday inquiring after the campesinos. When I went again on Saturday, there they were – all six of them – thanks to the fuss Amnesty had kicked up. They were released the week after without charges.

N

ewly elected President Luis Herrera Campins pardoned all the political prisoners – and Douglas Bravo – shortly after being sworn in February 1979. The revolutionaries were used to living underground and the light of day gradually dispelled any illusions they may have had left. My close friendship with Douglas, his wife and her family continued until I left Venezuela in 2002.

M

eanwhile, every time Maggie got re-elected I used to tell my Venezuelan friends: “Ah well, anther five years in exile”.

B

russels seems to be quite happy these days with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. European leaders now seem to realize that he means business because he stooped so far down and decided to cut the pensions of an estimated eight million retired people across Spain. Actually, what the prime minister did was not to raise the annual cost of living allowance for next year. With this move he in fact cut pensioners’ purchasing powers, making it even more difficult for them to meet their day-today expenses. But Brussels wants action, action in exchange for all the help it is providing Spain that will mainly go to helping the dreadful situation at the country’s financial institutions and, of course, big business.

T

he European Commission had warned Madrid that it wanted more money dedicated to jobs programmes and other economic incentives to make Spain more competitive over the next few years. But the European leaders have been unable to reach an agreement on budgetary spending for the 2014-2020 period. With outcries from senior citizens across the country, the Popular Party (PP) government is now saying that the pension cuts were needed because Spain needs to meet its deficit-cutting goals. But this is not about policy but election strategy. By next year or at the latest 2014 Spain's pensioners will get back their raises and maybe then some. This is the ploy Rajoy will use to convince voters when the next elections are due to come around that he kept his word – even though he didn’t give them a cost of living allowance for 2013, he kept his word and didn’t touch their pensions and even gave them a little bit more the following year. For now, Spain’s retirees will have to bite the bullet and let Rajoy toy around with their pockets so that Brussels – where Europe actually believes this man means business – can fawn all over him.

Court blunders

T

he judicial caper surrounding the release last week of the main suspect in a multi-million euro money-laundering ring because of a legal technicality is getting fierce. The High Court had to set free Chinese-born businessman Gao Ping and 19 other cosuspects of his alleged cash-laundering gang, who were rounded up last month, because the judge handling the case kept

them too long in detention before he could take their sworn statements. It was one of those judicial boo-boos that have many prosecutors and legal experts again on edge because of Spain's confusing and archaic court proceeding rules. According to a 1882 law, the police have up to 72 hours to keep suspects in detention, conduct searches and finish their preliminary investigations before they are to be handed over to the court for a probable cause hearing. Beyond that point, a judge has another 72 hours to take a statement from the defendant and decide whether or not to hold him in preventive custody or grant him bail before trial. But because there were so many suspects arrested in the so-called Operation Emperor money-laundering investigation – 108 in all – High Court Judge Fernando Andreu was racing against the clock. With 29 suspects, including Gao, still left to go before him as the deadline approached, Judge Andreu decided to put them under his jurisdiction before the first 72-hour period was up but keep them in police custody while telling law enforcement authorities not to conduct any more preliminary investigations. One crafty defence lawyer pulled out a 2006 Constitutional Court ruling handed down in the Operation Malaya Marbella real estate corruption enquiry that basically states that a judge only has one 72-hour period and it cannot be extended. A High Court appeals panel agreed and 20 suspects had to be released on their recognisance. Now five of them of them are filing judicial complaints against Judge Andreu for overstepping his bounds and holding them illegally. It could be a Baltazar Garzón episode all over again.

O

peration Emperor was one of the biggest money laundering investigations in recent times. Authorities say some €300 million was laundered annually for years by Gao and his gang, through the sale of cheap Chinese imports. Now the investigation, which is far from over, has been jeopardised because of the Spanish court's blundering. It is time for a complete overhaul of the country's judicial system and not just a reform of the court proceedings as Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon is proposing. A far-reaching reform involves the input of judges, legal experts and prosecutors to ensure that confusing rules never stand in the way of handing down justice.

British Consulate Press releases The following three articles were issued by the British consulate last week.

Nineteen arrested in Spain and Uk in people smuggling investigation “Spain is becoming a hard place for organised immigration crime to operate.” UK Border Agency officers and the Guardia Civil have arrested a total of 19 people in the UK and Spain as part of a major international investigation into a suspected organised crime gang involved in people smuggling. Operation “MARLO” involved UKBA and Guardia Civil raids on addresses in Alicante, Madrid and London on Monday 26th November, and a further arrest in Hull on 27th November. The arrests were the culmination of a joint investigation into an alleged criminal network suspected of assisting Iranian migrants to reach the UK from mainland Europe. The investigation also involved the UKBA Immigration Liaison Office based in the British Embassy in Madrid and the assistance of airlines. The network is alleged to have organised travel and provided false documents to their clients to facilitate their arrival at UK airports. The eight people arrested in the UK were aged between 23 and 56. In addition computers, documents and mobile phones were seized from a number of addresses and will now be examined. Coordinated action by the Guardia Civil saw eleven people arrested during raids in Madrid and Alicante in Spain. The gang is said to have been contacted by up to 100 potential customers per month and was charging its clients up to 18,000 euros each. Of those enquiries, on average 25 per month are believed to have become clients, with

20 per month heading for the UK. Chris Foster from the UK Border Agency’s Criminal and Financial Investigation team said: “This investigation is targeting an organised network suspected of being involved in a systematic attempt to evade the UK’s immigration controls. “People smuggling is an international crime which requires international cooperation, so we have been working very closely with our Spanish lawenforcement colleagues from the outset. Our investigation will continue with the evidence we have seized.” Simon Cooper, UKBA Assistant Regional Director covering Spain, added: “Spain is becoming a hard place for organised immigration crime to operate, and criminals now know that they will be disrupted and brought to justice.” All those detained yesterday in the UK were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to facilitate an asylum seeker for gain. They are now being questioned at police stations in London. Anyone with information about immigration crime can pass it on via Crimestoppers at http://www.crimestoppers -uk.org/, or call the UK number 0800 555111. Anonymity is assured.

Tim Garrish - Head of CEOP’s International operation volunteering roles was launched in Spain on November 29th. Specialist Spanish officers tackling child sexual abuse have shared their expertise and experience of combating this crime with staff from the UK’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre during a two-day law enforcement workshop, which included the launch of the International Child Protection Certificate. CEOP’s International Child Protection Certificate (ICPC) is a new police check for UK nationals who are travelling and working overseas and will help identify and screen out those who are unsuitable to be working with children. CEOP has found that some international schools, charities and other agencies overseas do not currently have access to the same level of police checks available to organisations in the UK, sometimes enabling sex offenders to gain positions of trust with children. CEOP is the UK national law enforcement agency dedicated to protecting children from abuse. The certificate has been designed to help prevent known child sex offenders from gaining inappropriate roles in other countries.

Investigation into boiler room fraud leads to 22 arrests in Spain Ten British nationals were among 22 people arrested in Spain as part of an investigation into an organised crime group believed to be responsible for defrauding hundreds of victims of over eight million euros. The multi-agency investigation, led by the Spanish National Police and supported by the Serious Organised Crime Agency and City of London Police, also resulted in the seizure of four firearms, ammunition and 367,000 euros. Officers believe that members of the crime group operated a boiler room fraud in which intensive telephone campaigns were carried out to persuade over 200 members of the British public to put their savings into investment packages that did not exist. During searches of addresses in Barcelona and other Catalan provinces, officers also recovered seven false UK passports, numerous computers, hard drives, USB sticks, mobile telephones, lists of

potential clients and manuals on how to get people to part with their money. Ian Milne, SOCA’s Head of Operations in Europe, said: “Working with partners to protect members of the public is a priority for SOCA. We believe this organised crime group was running a sophisticated and complex boiler room fraud. Shutting it down has put a stop to more members of the public being duped into parting with their hard earned cash.” Det Supt Tony Crampton, from City of London Police, said: “Investment fraud is all too often a crime created abroad to target people back here in the UK, with the vulnerable members of society being most at risk. In order to get to grips with this criminality and target the fraudsters who feel they are operating outside the law, it is necessary to develop international alliances between law enforcement and counter fraud agencies. “This successful operation in Spain provides further evidence of how these partnerships are now delivering the sort of results

that should make organised crime gangs think twice before starting their criminal enterprise.” The Spanish National Police believe that the crime group was made up of various self-governing sub-groups, with each one specialising in an aspect of the defrauding process. They also believe that the head of each sub-group communicated solely with the leader to avoid being traced to other members of the organisation. Enquiries have revealed that the alleged perpetrators used false identification documents, travelled constantly, changed addresses regularly, and used the name of a non-profit making company to open current accounts with various banks. The 22 people have been charged with being part of an organised crime group, as well as with fraud offences. Five of the British nationals were remanded in custody and the others were released on bail.

Members and visitors enjoyed the British Society Christmas Fair held at Villa Luisa. The popular home made produce stall soon attracted a crowd and pickles, mince pies, cakes, puddings and quiches were soon purchased. Gifts were purchased from the attractive jewellery and clothing stalls before moving on to try and win a prize on the tombola where the star attraction was a microwave. The café provided a welcome rest for a meal accompanied by wine or other drinks from the bar. A

mouth-watering Christmas cake was available to be won by the person who could guess the weight of the cake and a cuddly teddy bear to be won by choosing the correct name. The plant stall was a mass of colour with poinsettias and other plants that will flower during the Christmas season and some handmade Christmas cards were also for sale.

Led by Paddy the Pooch (aka Nigel in doggie clothing) they all left the Sohail castle and caused quite a stir as they made their way along the Paseo to Fuengirola Port, then returning back along the route. The dogs were wearing their attractive yellow bandanas so that

everyone knew where they were from and their human escorts made quite a din rattling their collecting tins. The end of the walk was at The Gun Pub which was bathed in sunshine for a well-earned drink and bacon sarnies. It was a lovely atmosphere and everyone kept their dogs for a while so that they too could watch the world go by. Some tired, but very happy dogs returned to the shelter and slept very well. Satellite TV: not free to anything anymore Free To Air TV has long been one of the things that, to some people, makes living in Spain that bit better. Yes, we all know we shouldn’t get it but ... However, in the last few weeks rumours have been flying around about the satellite being moved and everybody, or just some, losing their UK TV channels. Some said that you’d need a 4-metre wide dish to pick it up again that would cost around €3000 but, who wants to look like Goonhilly Down satellite station? One rumour was that you’d be OK if you paid for Sky and it would only affect the people that had just Free To Air cards, but that isn’t so. Channel 5, 5*, 5USA and some ITV channels have already gone. On Thursday many more ITV channels will disappear and on the 16th of this month we are likely to lose all the BBC channels as well. One reader said: “You can’t sell your house here, and now I won’t even be able to watch bloody Corrie!” In the summer it wouldn’t be so bad as you can do a lot of things

outdoors but, just before Christmas? It’s all a bit much, isn’t it? Those that have been watching “Homeland” won’t be able to see the last episode unless you can get it on your computer somehow, assuming you even have internet at home. Nobody knows quite how bad it is going to be but satellite companies are working hard to find alternatives that are not going to cost the earth. Still, to look on the bright side, at least there’s plenty to see and do over the festive season with bars and restaurants having special events going on. There’ll no doubt be some English version films at the cinemas and we could all pop along to Malaga to see the lights. It will be very interesting to see what happens to the “birth rate” among the expats in nine months time ! We will, of course keep you updated with any news but, in the meantime we have received this report from Eurosat in Torreblanca: RECEPTION OF UK TV CHANNELS AS FROM 4TH DECEMBER

Funeral Care Spain English Funeral Directors

“As you are possibly aware as from 4th December here on the Costa del Sol we have lost reception of More4/ 4-7 + Channel 5/5+1/5star/5USA also Channel 4 HD/Channel 4-7. “This is due to a new satellite (Astra 2F) which is now active, and the satellite provider has transferred the signal from the old satellite Astra 1N to this new satellite Astra 2F. “If you have the internet, you can check out which TV/Radio channels will be affected by looking at http://en.kingofsat.net/po

these UK channels but the lowest cost option is that you will need to have access to the internet. It may be possible to receive the UK channels through a bigger dish ( at the moment we can view the existing ASTRA 1N channels using a 110cm dish) – but we "guess-timate" that a dish size greater than THREE METRES may be required for this new satellite ! Eurosat in Torreblanca are now testing this new satellite to see what size may be required, and should have some results in

the next day or two! If you are a Sky subscriber with “HD” there is some good news, you will still be able to receive Channel 5 HD and also ITV 2/3/4 HD BUT not ITV 1HD, or any BBC channels. Your Weekly Entertainment Guide INSIDE THIS WEEK Last chance to see - James Bond film Skyfall at La Trocha Christmas market - now open in La Cala de Mijas Concerts for the festive season - by Colegium Musicum

Mijas Costa Christmas Market Mad Terry on Christmas @ Buzby’s The Christmas market started last Saturday December 1st, with the recent down-turn in the weather adding a seasonally cool touch and a measure of authenticity for those more used to a northern climate. The Mijas Christmas market is located around a large marquee on the main thoroughfare in La Cala de Mijas and will run for the next two weeks until Sunday the 16th of December. The market opens every day from 12.00 noon until 6.00 pm hosting stands with different international traditional Christmas speciality foods, displays of handicrafts and other seasonal gifts. The Jazzy Snowmen are there to perform live jazz concerts in the afternoon from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on the 3rd 4th and 5th of December and again from the 10th to the 14th of December plus various

other dance performances, Christmas shows and choirs throughout the event, with adequate festive support and more food from a German style beer tent. On the holidays (6th and 8th) and on the weekends from 1.00 pm until 6.00 pm, there is a Kids’ Scandinavian Christmas workshop, open to all children with a special visit by Papá Noel (Santa Claus) at 6 pm on the 9th December. The Spanish Carol service will be on the evening of the 13th from 7.00 to 11.00 pm. Of course, being in Mijas the whole event will be truly international with a multitude of cultures and languages coming together to provide good fun and seasonal cheer for all. For a full programme ask at any Mijas Foreign Residents department. Contact them by email on frd@mijas.es or phone 952

Well, it’s that time of year again when we eat, drink and be merry. On behalf of Julie, myself, Tommo and Janine I would like to say a big “thank you” to everyone who has supported us through 2012 and helped us to have a fantastic year. We will be closed until Tuesday December 18th to redecorate ready for Christmas as well as to enjoy a well-earned holiday before the festivities begin! Our Christmas line-up is as follows but, remember to look at our advert each week to see who we have on and when as well. On Christmas Eve, 24th December, we will be having Mad Terry and Tommo’s Party Night with a free buffet and, if you’ve ever been to one of our party nights before, you’ll already know these are not to be missed! On Christmas Day we have KT Peter’s Christmas Show.

This coming weekend the annual visit of the New Orleans Jump Band to the Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola supplies a treat for all jazz music lovers. Over the years the style of music the band plays has evolved and today they are aiming for a more authentic original New Orleans style with their great specialties of 'walkaround music', their earthy sense of humour and a warm contact with the audience. It takes them back to the beginnings of jazz and the music of Dixieland. The band was founded in the 1980s and has varied in personnel since then – sometimes with four and sometimes with as many as eight musicians. They have played all over Spain and Europe with performances

in festivals in France and England. Perhaps their highlight was playing at a Costa del Sol society wedding where King Juan Carlos and Prince Felipe were present. The King enjoyed their music so much that he requested a copy of their CD to take back to Madrid. They also have fond memories of being joined on stage by Seve Ballesteros and Darren Clarke. They have even had a spread in Hola magazine. This Saturday, December 8th at 8.00 and Sunday at 7.00 they take over the Salon Varietes for what promises to be another extremely popular visit. PLUS: coming soon – Pantomime for Christmas – Cinderella'.

ey’ve moved! Popular restaurant and bar, Pit Stop that used to be on Los Jarales, Calahonda, have now moved and changed their name. No longer called Pit Stop, they will now be known as “Jak’s Bar” and you will be able to find them at Avenida de España, Number 71, on the Centro Comercial Los Cipreses site that is just along the road so you will still be able to enjoy all the snacks and meals you did before. Good news is that they will have taken all their kitchen equipment along with them so they’ll still be serving up their delicious fish n’ chips too!

The Choir & Orchestra “Collegium Musicum Costa del Sol” are delighted to welcome back the Hungarian Soprano, Alinka

Once again she and Ángel San Bartolomé will enthrall audiences with their interpretation of some of the greatest music written for Soprano & Trumpet. Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen (BWV 51) is one of only four sacred cantatas that Bach wrote for a solo and is scored for solo soprano, trumpet and strings. The solo parts are

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

END OF WATCH Directed by David Ayer Starring: Jake Gyllenhall, Michael Peña, America Ferrara Officers Brian Taylor (Gyllenhall) and Mike Zavala (Peña) are a pair of LA cops who are engaged in uncovering a Mexican drug cartel operating on their patch in this gritty police drama that gives the audience a street-level sense of perspective. The two men have a great chemistry and Gyllenhall has shed his pretty boy looks and shaved his head to inhabit the tough guy role. We see developments through their eyes via digital cameras clipped to their uniforms because Mike wants to make his own

video diary. Meanwhile the baddies are also busy recording the action so they can be immortalised on YouTube. The plot is nothing new, but the two stars are probably the best pairing since Danny Glover and

Mel Gibson Weapon.

Lethal

There are plenty of car chases and shoot-outs as the buddies hit the streets in a movie that is probably one of the best LAPD crime dramas since Denzel Washington’s Oscar

winning performance in Training Day – written by director Ayer. With some refreshing insights into the home lives of the duo and amusing banter the movie cracks along at rapid-fire pace.

VIRGO

There is a strong part of your being that needs down time – you simply need to isolate in order to integrate and feel grounded. You are being pushed to make a more firm commitment to your relationship process and dedicate more of yourself and consider the needs of another. You have an opportunity to move forward with new ground rules that support both parties for a long time. Make that solid plan happen and your chances of success are great. It may be time to slow things down or the universe has a habit of forcing you to take a rest. Allow yourself to be open to new information and ideas, to break the routine and come off auto pilot so that you can see and embrace the changes as they are coming. There could be some potentially hard choices to make and the outcome is not readily clear. It could also be time to delegate if you are taking on too many daily chores. Let your actions speak loud and clear this week and pay attention to events that are taking place as there are lessons to be learned here. This is an unstoppable week when your energy levels are high and an exceptional new start has reached your door, your creative inner processes are ready to produce. There is much more going on within you than meets the eye or that you are even able to understand. Every day you are growing stronger. Find the truth and be the one to act upon it. You know what others really want and need and you are being asked to step up to the plate and deliver. Others want you to take the lead to be proactive and give your unbiased perspective. The past may have found a way of creeping up on you and some old stuff could be there for review, however, it will have a way of helping you to finally throw off the pieces of the past that have held you back. There is just not enough time in the day lately especially when you are so focused on making something powerful, remarkable and memorable happen in your life. The best thing to do is not to over-think things, if they feel right then go with them. There are choices and decisions to be made maybe with regard to your career, so slow your mind down, don’t panic and trust your instincts. The best of things in life take time.

LIBRA

The best laid plans of man do not always pan out and yours may have gone awray lately leaving you wondering if you are coming or going. This in turn could have provoked some inner fears and emotions and cause you to second guess yourself. The truth is you know it is time to move forward once again and these are all September 23rd - merely stall tactics while you figure out what you really want and ask yourself if October 22nd it is worth the effort. You are at a turning point Libra.

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

Your hidden artistic talents are coming to the fore and these are likely to be things that you take for granted but others just wish they were qualities that they had. It is vital that you use this time to get things done, handle all tasks and obligations to allow yourself a pleasant and stress free environment to retreat to at the end of the day. By the weekend the energy shifts and becomes much more fun and social in nature, surround yourself with those you love being with.

SAGITTARIUS You may be experiencing a wild imaginative inner life and some things as you know them are coming to a close, yet in a big and far better way you are entering a bright new beginning which is going to fill you with a strong posture of confidence and certainty. You know where you are headed, however you are not exactly sure where November 22nd - you will land or how it is going to feel mid flight. There are such a lot of realisations December 21st happening you could find yourself quite tired this week.

CAPRICORN You have got a good thing going but you need to see some results. Be open to the unthinkable and eventually you will get the proof you need. You could want to take on the world right now as your energy is burning hot and ready for action, loaded with passion and sensuality. For many, this can indicate December 22nd - reaching some of the deepest states of love and for others this can mean January 19th becoming totally committed to a cause to obtain your goals and objectives.

AQUARIUS

January 20th February 18th

PISCES

February 19th March 20th

Everything is felt with a greater intensity and sense of urgency at the moment. Something or someone needs to break the ice and it has got to be you. It may be necessary that you speak up and out so this silence and its hold on you does not carry on into the New Year. Once you free those words you will find that they release you from carrying the weight of the past. Determination is high although you may have to be prepared to confront powerful temptations.

The caterpillar must eventually turn into the butterfly it was intended to become so do not let inner fears or insecurities get in the way of an inevitable transformation. Have fun and do not take things seriously this week – allow the feeling of joy to embrace you. Even though you feel that you are being tossed about on a wild unpredictable surf and unable to see where it will carry you, there is still a great deal working for you and things will turn out better than you can possibly imagine or predict.

...you don’t have to be a chef!

These light cheesy Christmas canapes won’t spoil the main meal, well not unless you eat all 16 of them. I think I would find them hard to resist so I’d better stick to helping out in the kitchen, and keeping our guests supplied with drinks.

Australia has become the first country in the world to introduce plain packaging for cigarettes.

Tobacco company logos and colours have been replaced by a dreary, uniform, green/brown, colour accompanied by a raft of anti-smoking messages and graphic photographs. The only concession to the tobacco companies is their name and the name of the brand variant in small print at the bottom of the box. Health Minister Tanya Plibersek said: “This is the last gasp of a dying industry." Anne Jones of the anti-smoking group Ash (Action on Smoking and Health) said plain packaging has taken the personality away from the pack: “Once you take away all the colour coding and imagery and everything is standardised with massive health warnings, you really do de-glamorise the product." Cigarette packets were practically the last advertising platform for tobacco companies. Commercials on Australian television and radio were banned in 1976, and newspapers followed in 1989, while tobacco sponsorship of sport and cultural events was prohibited in 1992.

The packets themselves became a target for the current Labour government, which argued that with 15,000 smokers dying each year at a cost to society of AU$30bn (£19bn) it had a duty to act. It set the target of reducing smoking levels from 16% of the population in 2007, to less than 10% by 2018. The tobacco industry resisted with a consortium of major companies, including Phillip Morris, Imperial Tobacco and British American Tobacco (BAT), getting together to

plan a counter punch, which included an extensive media campaign to try to persuade the public and government of the shortcomings of plain packaging. Despite their arguments, last August Australia's High Court ruled in favour of the government. Britain, France, Norway, India and New Zealand followed the Australian court case closely, to see if there are any lessons for similar plain packaging measures in their countries.

At last, an end to their ordeals in the jungle

Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip

And Charlie Brooks has been declared the winner … but she is very glad to be back with her daughter (pictured below). After three weeks of living in the Australian jungle, actress Charlie Brooks has been crowned the champion of this year's 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here'. The actress beat former Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts – the bookies’ favourite to win the show – to the crown. On hearing the result, Charlie looked stunned while Ashley simply screamed and hugged her camp-mate. When Ant and Dec asked her

how it felt to hear that she was Queen of the Jungle Charlie joked: "Silly!" Charlie admitted that she wasn't expecting to win the show and commended all her fellow celebrities on the roles they played in camp. She said: "No, not in a million years did I think I would win, I had no idea, I didn't have a clue and everyone has been amazing. "Everyone has just been brilliant. David [Haye] was

our king down there, Eric [Bristow] the fire, every single person played their role." Runner up Ashley Roberts seemed pleased with the result, admitting that she was proud that she managed to make it to the end. She said: "I have gone beyond whatever I expected to get through in this competition or show, or whatever it is. I'm so proud of myself." Before the lines closed, Charlie Brooks had an

emotional reunion with her daughter Kiki about whom she had frequently talked during her time in the jungle. Contestants are made to eat all manner of insects etc while they are there plus doing tasks. ‘I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ will return again this time next year.

Digital Dandy Clapton for Sandy The Dandy's final printed edition has gone on sale as it marks its 75th anniversary by relaunching as an online-only publication. Britain's longestrunning comic will now be available to download online, and as a smartphone and tablet app. Dundee-based publisher DC Thompson announced in August that the weekly children’s comic would make the transition into cyberspace following dwindling sales in recent years. The issue features a cameo from Sir Paul McCartney, who said in 1963 it was his ambition to appear in the comic, and a pull-out of the first issue from December 4th, 1937.

The website will feature old favourites Desperate Dan, Bananaman and Korky the Cat in new animated strips, featuring voice overs and sound effects. Users will also be able to play interactive games, watch videos and create their very own virtual pet. David Bain, the comic's head of digital development, said: "The Dandy is alive and well, and it's going to continue as usual. It's just as of next week it's going to be available online on a regular basis, with all the famous characters and scripts and storylines and humour, as well as games, goodies and interactivity. It's all about fun, humour and a bit of mischief, a bit of pranking."

Eric Clapton and Coldplay have joined the line-up for a Superstorm Sandy benefit concert due to be held later this month. Producers of the show, which takes place on December 12th, said it will be broadcast to around one billion people across six continents. The star-studded concert at New York's Madison Square Garden will also feature performances from Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Sir Paul McCartney, Kanye West and Alicia Keys. Proceeds from 12-12-12, as it has been dubbed, will go to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, to help thousands of victims in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Superstorm Sandy killed over 120 people and caused billions of dollars of damage across the three states.

I had the pleasure of serving at RAF Changi in the Far East, on the island of Singapore, which was, for 25 years, one of the most popular overseas postings. During that period the RAF at Changi played a significant role during the Malaya Emergency with a number of squadrons dropping supplies to the army and the police patrols fighting in the almost impenetrable jungles. Once those earlier years of conflict were over, Changi became one of the most enjoyable of military stations. Recently I joined the "RAF Changi Association" in the UK which was formed in May 1996 – now with currently well in excess of 1400 members worldwide and it seems quite a few here in Spain. Its aim is to bring together once more exRAF, other service and civilian personnel who served at Changi between 1946 and 1972. Annual and local reunions take place in the UK at which many old friends have already met up again. Indeed a lot of our friends and colleagues were from the 41 Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. There may be amongst your readers' people who also served at Changi who would wish to join or partake in reunions and get-togethers here. If so I would be happy to provide information about the association to them. They can contact me on 670 259 217 or email at jbm76@me.com. There is also an association website at www.rafchangi.co.uk

Apollo 17: End of an era 40 years ago Apollo 17 sat poised on launch pad 39-A at Cape Kennedy destined to become the last flight of the Saturn V rocket carrying the last men to walk on the Moon.

A

pollo 17 launched on December 7th 1972, the Number One record was Chuck Berry’s ‘My ding-a-ling’. On board were Commander Eugene Cernan, Command Module Pilot Ron Evans and Lunar Module pilot Harrison Schmitt. This was the 6th and final Apollo Moon landing so it was imperative that NASA pulled out all the stops to go out with a bang. The original Apollo programme was intended to go right up to Apollo 20 but budget cuts caused the programme to be cut back to Apollo 17. ernan and Schmitt were to spend three days exploring the TaurusLittrow highlands on the Moon with the help of the Lunar Rover Vehicle. An LRV had been used twice before on Apollo 15 and 16 and was found to be indispensable for transporting the two astronauts and their equipment over 22 miles of the Moon’s surface. On one trip alone the astronauts travelled over 4 ½ miles away from the Lunar Module. Apollo 17 broke several records set by previous flights, including the longest manned lunar landing flight (12 days); the longest total lunar surface extravehicular activities (22hrs); the largest lunar sample return (108kgs), and the longest time in lunar orbit. he reason that this particular landing site was chosen was because it consisted mainly of ‘old’ Moon material. The dark areas or ‘seas’ that can be seen on the face of the Moon are the result of molten interior of the Moon spilling on to the surface to fill massive crater holes caused by the early Moon being constantly bombarded. The lighter areas are the true surface colour of the Moon and so hopefully there would be rock samples that were from the original formation of the Moon. nd so, it was on this mission that it was decided to send along a trained geologist. Harrison Schmitt was the only astronaut not to have come direct from the United States Armed Forces; a civilian was to be the last man to walk on the Moon. All of the previous Moon walkers had been recruited mainly from the USAAF and had to be taught the basics of geology so as to understand and appreciate the lunar surface. Schmitt had the trained eye of a seasoned geologist, well trained in finding interesting rock. pollo 17 landed on the Moon in the early hours of Monday 11th December leaving Ron Evans alone

in the command module orbiting and photographing the Moon. Cernan and Schmitt were keen to explore the Moon so after preparing the Lunar Module for the long stay they put on their space suits and stepped onto the Moon four hours later. The first job to do was to unload the LRV from the Lunar Module. Unfortunately Cernan broke one of the specially designed wheel mudguards which resulted in the astronauts being covered in Moon dust as they drove! he following day the astronauts carried out repairs to the broken mudguard by using duct tape to fashion a make-shift mudguard. The amount of dust thrown up on to them on the previous trip had become an issue once the astronauts were back in the Lunar Module and removed their filthy suits. During this walk while at the rim of ‘Shorty Crater’ Schmitt announced the discovery of orange soil! Later examination on Earth showed the rocks were tiny spheres of coloured glass that probably came from a surface vent. After one more day racing the clock to do all the science they could, the astronauts packed their gear and prepared to climb into the Lunar Module for the last time. Alone on the surface, Cernan gave a short speech, concluding, "I'd just like to record that America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow ... Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17." he Apollo 17 astronauts also left behind a plaque that read: "Here Man completed his first exploration of the Moon, December 1972 A.D. May the spirit of peace in which we came be reflected in the lives of all mankind." nd when they splashed down on 19th December little Jimmy Osmond was now Number One with ‘Long Haired Lover From Liverpool’

New footage clears Vettel overtake

New footage from Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull car shows the German did not commit an offence while passing Jean-Eric Vergne during the Brazilian GP. Ferrari had asked for clarification from the FIA over whether the new world champion had passed the Frenchman's Toro Rosso in a no-overtaking zone. The retrospective 20-second penalty for any offence would have seen Vettel lose his world title to Fernando Alonso.

e Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge After 350 competitive kilometres in the Tasmanian wilderness, Victorians Jarad Kohlar and James Pretto, have won the gruelling Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge, which finished in Hobart on Sunday 2nd December. The Swisse Active team took the lead on the opening day of the five-day Challenge in Launceston, and were never headed, despite a tough battle with pre-event favourites, New Zealanders Richard Ussher and Braden Currie, competing for Team Tasmania. To cap off a perfect week, Swisse Active crossed the finish line first on the final day to showcase their domination of the event finishing one hour two minutes and 39 seconds clear of their rivals. Last year’s winners, Team Iron House’s Mark Padgett and Mark Hinder were third, two hours 34 minutes and 10 seconds behind the winners. For Kohlar and Pretto, the $20,000 first prize was an added bonus. The Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge is a premium, five-day, multidiscipline event taking in over 350km of terrain across some of Tasmania’s most stunning scenic locations, competitors mountain biked, kayaked and trekked different, equally challenging courses daily. It was also an adventure race – along the way, competitors were challenged to other

needed charities. In the past they have included The Leukemia Foundation, Save the Tasmanian Devils Foundation and The Whitelion Foundation.

activities designed to push them outside their comfort zone. Mark loves the experience the Challenge provides to all competitors, from the elite to the beginner. “I love seeing people being rewarded for putting in the hard yards. The Challenge isn’t all about elite athletes; we’ve had people turn up to compete who have never done anything like it before and they’ve amazed themselves by getting through the whole event – for many of them it’s been a life-changing experience and it’s great to see them having a go.

Europe's crisis forces organisers to cancel Amsterdam auto show Organisers of next year's Amsterdam auto show have cancelled the event because of a lack of interest from automakers. Car companies are unwilling to commit to the show during the current economic climate, Joost 't Hooft, project manager for the show, told Automotive News Europe. In 2009, during the last economic downturn faced by automakers in Europe, organisers took steps to reduce costs by 70 percent for exhibitors by cutting the size of show stands.

December 16th. Glamour was provided by girls in suitably festive outfits (in spite of the chilly wind) who enjoyed riding like royalty in the the stately Bentley and

cream Rolls Royce. Visitors enjoyed looking at the cars

on show and chatting to the owners while youngsters had memorable photographs taken at the wheel of their dream drive. This coming Saturday (December 8th) classics from the club will be on parade again, this time to escort a prize-winning Santa Claus who will be arriving in La Cala at 15.00 hrs, riding

not on a sleigh but on the back of an open car borrowed from the Malaga Car Museum. SOL Classic Car Club will be holding their Christmas dinner and Christmas Car Run this month. For details go to www.solclassiccarclub.net.

Public reaction at the time showed that visitors were willing to tolerate a one-off ‘crisis’ show, but further scaled-down shows were not an option, 't Hooft said. ''We will now try to find a consensus on a manageable concept for all parties involved for the future,'' he added. The show was due to take place between April 3rd and April 14th. In 2012, the event, which is named AutoRai after its location, received 270,000 visitors.

Lotus in scrap Group Lotus said ousted CEO Dany Bahar stuck the British carmaker with the cost of his luxury lifestyle including a chauffeur, helicopter travel and 10 wristwatches. Lotus is seeking to recoup about 2.5 million pounds ($4 million) for unauthorised expenses and overpaid salary and bonuses, according to its October court filing in a lawsuit over Bahar's departure. The claim came in response to Bahar's own U.K. lawsuit against Lotus and Malaysian parent company DRB- Hicom, which seeks 6.7 million pounds for wrongful dismissal. DRB, controlled by billionaire Syed Mokhtar AlBukhary, took control of the unprofitable British sportscar maker through its January

purchase of Proton Holdings. Bahar was fired in June. According to an interview with Bahar last year, Lotus hadn't generated any profit since it was acquired by Proton in 1996 as the maker of the Elise sports car struggled to compete against Porsche and Ferrari in Europe. The Proton board felt Bahar had "done an 'abysmal' job as CEO, was excessively extravagant and mercenary and was preoccupied with his own interests," according to the Lotus counterclaim. His expenses "were all the more unacceptable given that his brief was to turn the business around, which he singularly failed to do."

Wayne’s Poker Weekly Tips Today let’s talk about what every poker player likes to complain about, bad beats. Now if you don't know what a bad beat is in the poker world, it is when you are a massive favourite to win a hand and the other guy hits the miracle card to win. My latest so called bad beat was in an online cash game, after looking at my hole cards I was very happy to see a pair of bullets, otherwise known as AA the best starting hand in Holdem. I was in a early position so raised, hoping to get at least a call but better still a re-raise. Alas it was fold,

fold and fold until the big blind flat called me. The Flop (1st three community cards) came down A55, eurika! I had flopped the best full house so now how to get paid? To my surprise the BB bets into me, happy days I think and reraise. I was very happy when he then pushed all in. Of course, I snapped called having the second best possible hand with only pocket 5s to worry about. The cards were turned over and he showed A5 meaning I was a 98% favourite to win with him only having 1 out being the case 5 so making him a

2% dog to win. You guessed it! He hit the miracle river card which beat me with his quad 5s, a so called bad beat but in reality it's odds and probability working against you. Think about it, he had only a 2% chance to win which means that if we ran this hand 100 times the laws of probability say he will win twice. It does not mean I will win the firstt 98 times with him winning 99 and 100. His wins could come anywhere from 1 – 100. So the point I am making is when a lot of players hit these out draws

they tilt, steam, and blow a fuse. Well it's poker and it happens, don't play when you feel angry, sit out for a few hands and calm down because the worst thing you can do when playing poker is play whilst on tilt, you make bad decisions and calls and will normally cost you even more money in losses of your bank roll. So tip of the week never ever play whilst angry or drunk!

keenly fought contest, but Craig Lewis (playing in his first club competition since moving to Miraflores) was at the top of his game and despite some superb bowling by Andy Salmon (also in his first competition since joining the Club) he had all the answers winning the championship with a

score of 21-6 which was not relective of the closeness of the contest. As always a large number of members turned out to watch the excellent bowling from both players. This gave Craig his first title and a place on the honours board at the end of the season. Finally, Craig and Sandra have decided to extend the opening hours of the club. In addition to the normal Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m they will now be open on Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. All are welcome to come along to enjoy the extended hours for which the dress code will be casual.

Missed Chances Cost Malaga Dear Getafe 1 - 0 Malaga Malaga travelled to the outskirts of Madrid in hope of gaining another 3 points after squeezing through in the Copa del Rey against Caraceno on goal difference. It was a slow start and not until the 18th minute did Camacho test Moya in the Getafe goal from 35 yards. The rest of the half was a dull affair with neither side breaking the deadlock. Alvero shot over for Getafe on 46 minutes as the home side upped the tempo. The winning goal when it came was down to some bad Malaga defending, Lopo managing

to nod home on the nearpost amongst a ruck of players on 57 minutes. Santa Cruz came off the bench for Malaga and transformed the team. With 18 minutes to go Santa Cruz was put through on goal only to scoop the ball over the goalkeeper and over the bar. A bad miss and with eleven minutes left another good Malaga move, Toulalan putting in Saviola whose shot was brilliantly saved by Moya turning the ball on to the bar and to safety. It was not to be Malaga's day when really a draw would have been a fair result. Getafe move level on points with Malaga and several teams looking for the 4th Champions League place. Next game is on Tuesday against Anderlecht at home in the Champions League and then Saturday at 6pm an Andalucian derby against Granada at home. Report by Scott Forbes

Dutch linesman dies after kids attack A Dutch man has died after being kicked and punched by a group of teenage football players for whom he acted as linesman in a Sunday league match. Frankie Dettori verdict awaited A verdict is due to be announced today (Wednesday) after French racing stewards met to discuss Frankie Dettori's failed drugs test. He was suspended on 20th November pending Tuesday's disciplinary hearing by French racing authority France Galop. The British-based Italian could face a ban of several months. Work has begun on widening the famous Road Hole Bunker and the iconic 11th green is also being recontoured, a depression filled in on the seventh fairway and mounds are being added to the right of the second green. Rebecca Adlington blasts delay in naming new coaches Rebecca Adlington has criticised British Swimming for the delay in naming a new head coach, calling the situation an "absolute mess". Dennis Pursley quit after GB fell short of its target of five to seven medals at London 2012, collecting just three. British Swimming initiated a review, but said the results showed their programme does not need an overhaul. "Why is it taking so long? We've been dying for them to appoint a head coach for months," Adlington told BBC Sport.
