Mixed reactions to Kate hoax Millions of Australians watched the prime-time royal hoax tragedy interviews, when DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian said in a tearful broadcast on Monday that they were "gutted and heartbroken" by Mrs Saldanha's death. Christian said: "It was something that was just fun and light-hearted and a tragic turn of events noone could have predicted or expected. "We are shattered, heartbroken and our deepest sympathy goes to the family, friends and all those people affected. Mel and myself are incredibly sorry for the situation and what's happened." The company which owns the station, Southern Cross Austereo, has cancelled its Christmas party, saying it would be "inappropriate" to go ahead and said all profits from advertising on 2Day FM for the rest of the year would be given to an

The two DJs have been subjected to intense hostility online, but the temper of the traditional media has been more conciliatory and sympathetic since their tearful TV apology. Former broadcaster Mike Carlton said “They were kids rushing in where rather wiser and older angels might have feared to tread", while the Sydney Morning Herald urged the not to authorities overreact. A lifetime - but so quick! next Monday, december 17th, it will be The news’ fourth birthday! In some ways it seems like we were living in a different world before we started and, in some ways we were. I was working just three days a week and the recession had just started. Little did we know then that “the crisis” was going to last this long but, when our previous employer went down we all still needed to work and we all knew what we were doing as far as producing a newspaper was concerned and so The news was born. In other ways, it only seems

like yesterday that we started. I’m sure time goes much more quickly the busier you are, not to mention the older you get. Of course, here in Spain we do all still get those long, hot summers but they seem to come round much sooner these days, and to think that it was a whole year ago my husband and I were in Australia. Where does all that time go? Anyway, as it was our 200th edition a few weeks ago and now our fourth birthday, we have redesigned the front of the paper and upgraded the design of the inside pages to a great extent so we hope you like the new look – as far as the Take-a-Break page is concerned you should at least be able to see it now! All our team work incredibly hard and I would like to say “Thank you” to all of them for their support and friendship. On a last note, it’s also our Geoff’s birthday on Monday so, a very happy birthday to him too!

The presidents of the EU's three main institutions – European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Parliament President Martin Schulz – received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on Monday, accompanied by most of Europe’s national leaders, with the exception of David Cameron. Deputy PM Nick Clegg – a longstanding advocate of the European project – represented the UK at the ceremony. The EU was awarded the prize for its role in uniting the continent after two world wars. Mr Van Rompuy paid tribute to the post-war leaders of France and Germany who had forged the EU by uniting their economic interests. He praised "the EU's secret weapon – an unrivalled way of binding our interests so tightly that war becomes impossible". "It is better to fight around the table than on a battlefield," he said, quoting Jean Monnet, one of the EU's founders. German Chancellor

MP Keith Vaz, who met Mrs Saldanha’s family in Parliament on Monday night, said they had been left “devastated” by the loss of “a loving mother and a loving wife”. Flanked by Mrs Saldanha's husband Benedict Barboza and her two teenage children, Mr Vaz said: "They just want me to say that they are extremely grateful to the public here in the United Kingdom and throughout the world who have sent them messages of condolences and support following the death of Jacintha.” Mr Vaz had earlier criticised the hospital for not giving

the family more support. He said: "The hospital has sent them a letter, which I have seen, but I'm surprised that nobody has made the journey to Bristol to sit with them and offer them the counselling that I think they need." In response, the hospital said its chief executive, John Lofthouse, had spoken to Mr Barboza on Friday by phone and offered to meet him whenever he wanted. The hospital has launched a memorial fund to support the nurse's family and a memorial service will be held later this week.

Angela Merkel sat next to French President Francois Hollande at the ceremony in Oslo City Hall. There was loud applause when the two leaders stood up, holding hands, to take a bow. Mr Van Rompuy ended by adapting the famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" quote from the late US President John F Kennedy during the Cold War. He said he hoped future generations would "say with pride 'Ich bin ein Europaer', 'Je suis fier d'etre Europeen', 'I'm proud to be European'". Four young Europeans, selected through an open EU competition, were in the delegation with equal status alongside the politicians. The European Commission, which drafts EU laws, said the Nobel Prize money – about €930,000 – "will be allocated to children that are most in need". Critics have said the award is inappropriate, pointing out that the eurozone crisis has exposed deep divisions in the 27-nation bloc.

Iberia strike called off Unions representing ground staff and cabin crew at Iberia on Monday called off strike action scheduled for the run-up to Christmas. They had planned six days of stoppages between December 14th and 21st in protest at planned job cuts. A spokesman for the Union Sindical Obrera (USO) told reporters: "We've decided to call off the strike because of the dates and because we don't want to harm passengers.” But he said no agreement with Iberia had been reached, leaving the

door open for fresh action from January. Iberia's management issued a statement welcoming the move as the "first step on the road to necessary dialogue". Iberia is part of the loss-making International Airlines Group (IAG), along with British Airways. In November IAG announced plans to cut 4,500 jobs at Iberia – about a quarter of the workforce.

It is also planning to cut the number of routes it operates and cut pay by between a quarter and a third in an effort to stem losses and remain competitive. Previously unions said they were willing to compromise on wage cuts but not outright job losses.

and Havana in January as part of a restructuring plan and that in mid-April it would also stop flying to Montevideo – which served as a connection point for the Southern Cone nations – and San Juan, Puerto Rico, where connections were made to other Caribbean destinations.

Iberia announced last Friday that it was cancelling direct flight routes to Athens, Cairo, Istanbul, Santo Domingo

Iberia CEO Rafael Sánchez Lozano said the five routes that will be cancelled in mid-January “have racked up the biggest

losses” for the airline. Iberia said the job cuts, as well as the downsizing of direct routes, are needed to turn the loss-making airline back into a profitable venture. Once the economy is turned around, Iberia said it will begin adding routes – especially to Brazil, Mexico, Miami, Santiago and Quito, as well as Africa – that are in greater demand.

MP resigns after an No New Year’s Eve alleged blackmail party in Madrid attempt Businessman Julio Torres, who manages the municipally-owned La Cubierta de Leganes, a remodeled former bullring in the Leganes suburb of the capital, had offered to organise a New Year’s bash as long as it had nothing to do with the Diviertt promotion company behind the tragic Halloween event that claimed the lives of five young women. But Leganes Mayor Jesús Gómez vowed to do

Partido Popular MP Santiago Cervera (pictured right), resigned on Monday after being detained for his alleged involvement in a case of blackmail. The president of Caja Navarra, José Antonio Asiáin, reported a case of attempted blackmail to the Guardia Civil last Wednesday, claiming that an unknown person had sent him an anonymous email demanding the payment of €25,000 in exchange for keeping quiet about sensitive information regarding his work at a firm of lawyers. The Guardia Civil set up a unit in the area where the anonymous person had demanded the money be left. They left an envelope at the site as bait and arrested Cervera when he turned up there on Sunday. He was released after

making a statement. Cervera told a press conference on Monday that he was the victim of a set-up. He said that a few days earlier he had received an email offering him information about Caja Navarra, to be left in the same place as specified in the other email to the bank boss. Cervera admitted it was not the right way to go about obtaining such information, but said he

was “curious.” He had been criticising the management of the Caja Navarra for several months. Cervera said his resignation was based primarily on his intention to face any possible charges through regular channels, given that his status as a deputy would grant him immunity in lower-level courts. He said he was very sorry for the damage he might be causing his party.

everything in his power to stop the event – even though more than 1,000 events have been held at the former bullring in the past 15 years. All had been inspected by the police and received positive feedback. Torres said that La Cubierta’s owners have “very strict” security measures and that tickets for the party would not exceed 10,500. The venue has a capacity of 15,000 but

he said it would not exceed 12,000, including staff. It is thought that capacity at Madrid Arena on November 1st rose to almost double its limit of 10,600. Torres said on Monday that no agreement has been signed for the organisation of the party, so it looks as if Madrileños will have to make do with eating their 12 grapes in the Puerta del Sol at midnight on December 31st.

Redrafting Constitution needs consensus Prime Minister Mariano rajoy said last Thursday that he did not believe the political consensus needed to redraft the Spanish constitution existed. Speaking to reporters during a break in last Thursday's ceremonies in the Upper House to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the signing of the Spanish constitution, rajoy said there has to be "a clear objective," "a majority consensus," and an "opportune moment" to call together a constitutional convention. opposition Socialist leader alfredo Pérez rubalcaba had suggested the constitution should include public health as a fundamental right to prevent future governments from making drastic cuts in health services similar to those being implemented by rajoy. In his speech at the ceremony, Speaker Jesús Posada said an economic crisis was "not the time to go embarking on revisionist adventures with doubtful results”.

The announcement by Secretary of State for Commerce, Jaime GarcíaLegaz, last month that the government was thinking of giving temporary residence cards to foreigners who buy homes valued at over €160,000 to revive the moribund housing market, had Chinese and Russian buyers in mind. But the scheme has generated most interest in Morocco – to the extent that the country’s Foreign Exchange Office has issued a statement saying that to take money out of Morocco to buy property would require its “prior authorisation,” adding that permission is normally only given in “exceptional” cases. Spain’s seven consulates in Morocco last year granted 145,880 visas to travel in the Schengen bloc. This year, Spain displaced France as Morocco’s main trading partner, while some

barcelona 300,000 Moroccans spend their holidays in Spain each year, mainly on the Costa del Sol. Some of Morocco’s growing middle class have already opened bank accounts in the enclave of Ceuta and on the Costa del Sol, to make online purchases and pay for medical insurance contracted in Spain, because credit cards issued by Moroccan banks cannot be used outside the country. Now the Moroccan authorities consider accounts opened overseas

by individuals to be illegal. To circumvent this, Moroccans use parallel circuits that charge a commission of between four to five percent, or risk smuggling in money in cash when they travel to Ceuta or Malaga by boat. Ceuta and its fellow North African enclave Melilla are the only places outside Morocco where dirhams are freely exchanged for euros. According to the Casablanca-based daily Akhbar al Youm, Moroccans have some

€30.8 billion in overseas bank accounts, mainly in Switzerland and Britain. Another Casablanca daily Al Massae has reported that the Foreign Exchange Office is concerned that a “large number of Moroccans may take advantage of the Spanish offer,” and that the government wants to stem a potential capital flight at a time when foreign exchange reserves are being depleted largely as a result of a widening trade deficit, with exports depressed by the crisis in Europe.

eatre slams boycott call The Teatre lliure theatre in barcelona has expressed its “indignation” at a call from within the acting profession itself for a boycott of the play running there because the leading actress, carmen Machi, had signed a manifesto calling for catalonia to remain within Spain. The call to blackball the play was launched by actor Toni albá, who favours catalonia’s independence from Spain. In a statement, the theatre said Machi is here“as an actress to do theatre, independently of her having exercised freedom of thought and opinion, which is something that up until now, all of us have the right to exercise”. albá has since apologized for calling for the play to be blackballed.

World News Asia 'to eclipse' US and Europe Asia will wield more global power than the US and Europe combined by 2030 – taking into account population size, gross domestic product (GDP), military spending and investment in technology – according to the National Intelligence Council (NIC). In its Global Trends 2030 report, issued to coincide with Mr Obama's second term, it said that within two decades "China alone will probably have the largest

economy, surpassing that of the United States a few years before 2030", adding that "the economies of Europe, Japan, and Russia are likely to continue their slow relative declines". It highlighted ageing societies and a growing middle class, as well as diminishing natural resources, as key global themes. The report also said that within the next two decades the US will achieve energy independence, and

the size of urban populations around the world will rise sharply. But it added that questions about the global economy, governance, evolving methods of conflict, regional spillover, new technologies and the future

role of the US could dramatically impact the global picture over the next 20 years. The study is the fifth in a series. The last edition was published in 2008.

Teacher suspended over 'suicide essay' in France A teacher at the Montmoreau-Saint-Cybard secondary school in the Charente region of western France has been suspended after allegedly asking pupils to write an essay from the viewpoint of a suicidal teenager, education officials said on Monday. The pupils, aged between 13 and 14, were told to imagine reasons for wanting to end their lives and describe their selfdisgust. Angry parents contacted the national education department and sent a copy of the

assignment, which was given to the students on October 22nd, to a local paper. "We are disgusted that someone would give this type of topic to children who are between 13 and 14 years of age," they told the paper. "We are not in the habit of questioning what happens at school, but there are limits. What will be the next topic? 'How do you feel when you shoot up drugs?'" The president of the local parents' association said the essay "almost encourages" children to

take their own lives. JeanMarie Renault, a regional director for the education ministry, said: "If the facts are proven to be accurate, I

cannot let this pass. Yes, there could sanctions. The teacher will have to explain herself."

Chavez undergoes new cancer President Hugo Chavez returned to Cuba on Sunday for more cancer surgery. in a Tv address Chavez said it was "absolutely essential" that he received further treatment, and for the first time he named his successor – vice-President nicolas Maduro. if his health fails a new election will have to be held, and he urged his supporters to vote for Maduro. The 58-year-old has had three cancer operations in Cuba since mid-2011, and declared himself free of cancer in May this year. However, he has never given much detail about the type of cancer he suffered from, and chose to be treated in Cuba rather than venezuela, which has led the opposition to call for greater transparency.

A building that collapsed in the Christchurch earthquake, killing 115, was badly designed and should not have been approved, according to the third and final report by the Canterbury earthquakes royal Commission. it said the engineer who designed the Canterbury Television (CTv) building was working "beyond his competence". it concluded that the six-storey structure collapsed within 10-20 seconds of the onset of the magnitude 6.3 earthquake on February 22nd, 2011. Almost two-thirds of the 185 people who died in the natural disaster were inside the CTv building. it also found that his overseer took a hands-off approach and did not review structural details of the project. HSBC to pay record settlement UK-based HSBC has confirmed it is to pay US authorities $1.9 billion in a settlement over money laundering – the largest paid in such a case. A US Senate investigation said the bank had been a conduit for "drug kingpins and rogue nations". HSBC admitted having poor money laundering controls and apologised, saying it had spent $290m on improving its systems to prevent money laundering and clawed back some

bonuses paid to senior executives in the past. The Senate report also said HSBC regularly circumvented restrictions on dealings with Iran, North Korea, and other states subject to US sanctions. HSBC has announced the appointment of a former US official to work as its head of financial crime compliance, which is a new position. Bob Werner was previously the head of the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control

(OFAC) – the agency responsible for enforcing the US sanctions on countries including Iran. He will be responsible for beefing up HSBC's antimoney laundering and sanctions compliance systems. The news followed the announcement of a similar but much smaller settlement with UK-based Standard Chartered bank, which will pay $300 million in fines for violating US sanctions.

Afghan women have 'a long way to go' Afghan women victims of violence are still being failed by the justice system, according to a new report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. It said that although there had been some progress in implementing a 2009 law on Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW),

overall use of the law "remained low". The report said the number of incidents of violence against women reported had gone up, but this may reflect "increased public awareness" about such crimes and their harmful consequences, rather than a rise in the number of actual incidents.

The report found that cases were often referred to tribal councils called jirgas, or similar bodies, which undermined the application of the EVAW law, and that the police were also reluctant to arrest alleged perpetrators with links to armed groups or other forms of influence for fear of reprisals.

A decision is expected soon and it is believed Portsmouth, with 1,500 jobs at stake, is most at risk. Government spending cuts have hit BAE, which also has two yards at Glasgow. The firm does not have enough work to bridge the gap between the completion of the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers it is building and the commencement of work on the type 26 Global Combat Ship programme for the Royal Navy. But there is some good news – a £1.2-billion contract for BAE to build the Royal Navy’s new hunter-killer submarine

HMS Audacious will safeguard 3,000 skilled jobs at Barrow in Cumbria. The fourth of seven Astute Class nuclear powered submarines, to be named HMS Audacious along with Astute, Ambush and Artful, is to be built at BAE Systems at the Cumbria plant. The company won the £1.2bn from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to be built for the Royal Navy. The first two submarines, Astute and Ambush, are currently undergoing sea trials – including tests on their ability to deep dive and to fire missiles – ahead of full service. A further £1.5bn has also been committed to three submarines yet to be built, which will complete the fleet. It will allow vital preliminary work to start.

land close to St Mary’s Church has dropped away bringing earth and human remains down the hillside, some of it hitting buildings belonging to Fortune’s Kippers. A damaged drain caused rainwater to pour out of the ancient graveyard and down the cliff. The church, next to Whitby’s famous abbey, is featured on picture postcards.

There were protests after research suggested Starbucks made £3 billion from UK sales in 14 years, but paid just £8.6 million in corporation tax. The firm has said it has always obeyed the law but realised customers expected it to do more. Starbucks will actually pay some £20 million in tax over the next two years, substantially more than the law requires. In the meantime, rival firm Costa Coffee’s profits are soaring (up 7.1% in just 10 days) as Starbucks customers go elsewhere for their caffeine fix.

Turkey legs it from farm Brothers jailed over You’d have thought it was something out of “Chicken Run” or maybe they’d made a follow up to the popular cartoon film but, no, Tommy the Turkey had actually made a run for it from the farm he was held captive in recently and wound up on a housing estate in Worcester.

Chelmsford Drive to ask "Have you seen a turkey walking around the estate?" She initially dismissed the door knock as a prank and shut the door – but when she saw the worried lad outside she went out to investigate.

Obviously realising the time of year it was, Tommy decided that wandering around the local gardens and driveways on the estate was a far better option than sitting (OK, well, not quite sitting – more trussed and golden brown from the oven) on people’s Christmas dining tables.

She said: "I asked him where the turkey was, he said it was behind a bush and took me to where it was. All I could see was these black feathers and all of a sudden he reared up and emerged from the bush. Imagine the shock when he ran out in front of me and started strutting around. The young lad stayed out there for hours while he was waiting for someone to come out. He was clearly upset at the thought of the turkey being out all night and said a fox would probably get it. At one point he even tried to catch it and put it in his own garden. I told him he had done everything he possibly could for the

And how right he was! Tommy has been spared the oven after being rescued by the RSPCA and will be spending his time at a local bird sanctuary after being given the OK by a vet. Retired Lyn Hughes, 62, captured pictures of the bird enjoying his freedom on her front drive after first discovering Tommy hiding in a bush. Lynn told how a young boy called at her home on

Perhaps a local farmer had been keeping them in a spare field and this one managed to escape. If their wings aren't clipped properly they can easily get over a fence and make a run for it. So it's likely that it's a farm turkey but we won't ever know for certain." Way to go Tommy – Happy Christmas to you and for this bird at least, a very Happy New Year indeed!

Spanish nationals Roberto and Jesus-Maria Moreno-Ramirez were arrested by Border Force officers at Terminal 1 on 19th September after flying in from the Dominican Republic, via Frankfurt. Checks were carried out on

their luggage and when two suitcases were emptied out they were found to be unusually heavy. The cases were X-rayed revealing both had false bottoms. Packages of white powder were found concealed within the hidden compartments. Tests carried out on the powder showed it to be cocaine. Just under three kilos of the drug was seized. If cut and sold on the streets of the UK it would have been

worth around £300,000. The brothers, aged 44 and 40 and originally from the La Rioja region of Spain, both pleaded guilty to importing a class A drug and were sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison each by a judge at Isleworth Crown Court on Thursday 6th December. Just under half of the 3,200 young people questioned across the eight provinces of Andalucia gave a rating of 4.7 out of 10 for the centre- left while the rest gave the Right a 10. Suspicions on business

P

T

eople who don’t like Communists or Socialists are not necessarily rightwing, as I know from my own experience. While Communism is no longer a world-wide threat – even most of the so-called Third World countries seem to have turned their backs on it – it would be unwise to forget the evil perpetrated by Stalin and Mao Tse Tung. Mao was the biggest killer with Stalin not far behind and compared to these two beauties, Hitler almost looks like child’s play, but for the fact that his evil killed millions of nonGermans. Mao and Stalin picked mainly on their own countrymen or the populations of states they controlled so they literally got away with murder for many years. I should imagine that if the internet had been around in those days, they wouldn’t have got away with it.

A

ll these thoughts started running through my mind when Izquierda Unida leader, Cayo Lara, stalked into Parliament on Constitution Day to announce that he would be boycotting the celebration. Lara was wearing a black jacket studded with lots of metal buttons and all he needed was the jackboots to look like a perfect little Nazi. This card-carrying Communist is the guy who calls everyone to the Right of him “fascist”. God help us all if he ever gets into power.

I

’ve always maintained that the Communist Party is right-wing. I remember when my then Spanish fiancé informed me in Madrid in 1968 that he couldn’t sit on the political fence any longer so he intended to join the banned Spanish Communist Party. I shrieked: “What! That bunch of right-wing yobos!” I was a bit of an anarchist at the time and hadn’t read George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia, which gives an idea of what the Communists were getting up to in Barcelona (killing everybody who disagreed with them) or I would have been spitting blood.

I

n every country where Communists have come to power, freedom of speech and thought – and every other freedom – have been suppressed and people’s minds and souls have been forced into straightjackets. Transgressors ended up in the Gulag’s work camps in Russia or the socalled re-education camps in China. Fidel Castro just puts them all in jail.

T

he Berlin Wall came down in 1989 but the Russians and their former satellite countries are still suffering from a huge hangover from all those decades of Communism, with Putin trying

to turn the clock back in Moscow. However, the Chinese people are beginning to stir and I suspect they’ll get over their Communist past much more quickly. Business calls, and the Chinese have been brilliant businessmen since five or more centuries ago. Castro is on the way out and his intended heir – Venezuela’s Chavez – seems to be fighting a losing battle with cancer. Once he’s gone, his 21st century version Communism will come to nought.

A

s for the Socialists, the Spanish variety lost their way in 1996, when the PP won the general election. For me, Zapatero personifies everything that is wrong with Socialism today in Spain. He didn’t dare upset the unions, the banks, or the businessmen – all arch enemies of “the people” his party was supposed to be defending. Now, of course, current Socialist leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba is doing just the opposite – just a little too late to be convincing. But taking on the powerful when you’re in opposition is little more than a verbal sparring and doesn’t hurt anyone. No, I think I’ll settle for having a mind of my own and the right to know what’s going on around me and – most importantly – to say what I think. So I’ll stick to the middle ground and take pot shots at both Right and Left when they deserve it.

Sounds familiar

F

ormer Socialist PM Felipe Gonzalez celebrated the 30th anniversary of his coming to power a few days ago. He introduced many much-needed reforms during his four terms in office but when he went in 1996, he left unemployment at record levels, a bankrupt Social Security, a rash of corruption scandals and paved the way for the current uncontrollable regional government spending by making concessions to the regional nationalist parties when he need allies during his last term, when he headed a minority government. Zapatero fiddled the economy and left a hidden deficit of €25,000 million, denied there was a crisis even when it was staring him in the face and put off measures that would have saved the Spanish people a lot of their current heartache. He also pandered shamelessly to the Catalan nationalists – and look where that got us – and revived the Civil War with his Historical Memory Law.

I

rest my case.

he other day, someone sent a letter in to El Pais bemoaning the fact that there are people in this country who believe that when one person with great responsibility is charged with a crime it doesn't affect the entire organisation he or she represents. This is what is occurring with the Spanish Businessmen's Confederation (CEOE) and the money laundering charges its former president Gerardo Díaz Ferrán is facing. The 69year-old Díaz Ferrán was arrested last week in a sweep along with eight others on charges of concealing assets and trying to launder millions of euros through Swiss bank accounts and in other tax havens abroad. Diaz Ferrán was a colourful character during the previous Zapatero administration, when he tried to take on the nation’s trade unions, CCOO and UGT, during the Socialist government’s flawed attempt to make some changes to the labour laws. He fought viciously with labour leaders over changes to the way companies hire and fire people.

and my 40-something partner was always president of the company and he carried out the executive work,” he told High Court Judge Santiago Pedraz. “I have never carried out executive work, let alone the day-to-day running of the company.” But dead men do not talk.

A

ccording to the case file, Díaz Ferrán and Pascual gave Viajes Marsans travel agency and all its assets to De Cabo, who paid them €100,000 a month in return – up to a total of eight million euros each. The businessmen eluded their 10,000 creditors and the liquidator, who was De Cabo, got rich over the scheme.

T

here had been whispers during this time that his Viajes Marsans travel agency – one of the biggest in the country – was having bad financial problems. In 2009, the travel agency was declared bankrupt and more than 3,000 people were left without a job. Marsans’ affiliate, Air Comet, was grounded and 6,000 passengers were stranded at airports across the country. The government had to pay for the tickets to get the passengers home. The entire mission cost the government some €3.1 million. In order to prevent his creditors from getting their hands on any of his assets, prosecutors believe that Díaz Ferrán, along with another businessman, Ángel De Cabo, concealed the money in tax havens abroad. So far they have been able to trace €3.4 million.

A

n investigating judge at the High Court set bail at €50 million for De Cabo – thought to be the highest in Spanish judicial history – and €30 million for Díaz Ferrán. Both men are sitting inside Madrid’s Soto del Real prison reportedly trying to come up with the money. The CEOE is trying to separate itself from Díaz Ferrán, who has blamed all of his legal problems on late partner Gonzalo Pascual. “During the whole process I have, of course, never carried out any executive work in Viajes Marsans neither before or after, when I was volunteer administrator,

Ángel De Cabo

D

e Cabo is also a colourful character. The Valencia businessman has been connected to another controversial entrepreneur, José María Ruiz-Mateos, the owner of the Nueva Rumasa conglomerate who is facing a host of charges for bilking his investors of hundreds of millions of euros. He would purchase a company, mainly for a symbolic fee, as he did with many of Nueva Rumasa's subsidiaries, says one cooperating witness.

N

ow the CEOE believes that its organisation won’t be affected by the scandal. Díaz Ferrán, who was president 2007-2010, was the voice and image of the nation’s business elite. It is not right to say that his charges will not overshadow his performance at the helm of the CEOE. The case will no doubt raise suspicions about other businessmen who make up the confederation and had strong connections to Díaz Ferrán.

e News is four years old this week! In the Beginning.. Starting from scratch with our first issue published on 17th December 2008, nobody knew quite where we were headed. We had vast experience between us of putting a paper together but, with the company we had all worked for having gone down and a recession just starting to bite, some thought we were absolutely mad even to attempt to start a new company, let alone a brand new newspaper. At the start, of course it was hard. However, little by little advertisers got to know that they could trust that we would do what we said we would and, luckily for us, when they found that they were getting business from their advertising, told others that ours was the paper to advertise in. The recession bit harder and harder and it would be a lie to say that it hasn’t sometimes been a struggle but we have a great team who all work together here, a client base who trust us enough to recommend us to others and a readership that, so they tell me, love The News.

What you say As I go round delivering the new copies on a Wednesday, I hear comments like: “Oh, great, my favourite paper” and the best one was “I wonder what that woman’s saying in her column this week?” – little did they know until I told them that I was “that woman”, and, luckily, what she had said was extremely complimentary! Our readers say that they like the fact that there’s not a lot of “woffle” in The News. We try very hard to give everybody something to read of different lengths so that you have something to read whether you are sitting for five minutes before running off to get on with other things or longer, more in-depth articles for if you have a bit of time on your hands. We have people complain if their copy turns up a bit late due to our getting caught in traffic and we have people waiting at our distribution points for us to get there. All-in-all it is great to know that people love what we’re doing and, when it gets a bit tough, as it is for

all businesses right now, it gives us all the boost we need.

Party! A few weeks ago saw our 200th edition – quite an achievement we think for our little team and, on Tuesday, it will be our fourth birthday. So, last weekend we had our staff Christmas/ Birthday/Bi-centenial Party at the Tamisa Golf Hotel in Mijas Costa. We had a full Christmas dinner and sat and nattered for quite a few hours. There were our staff members and most of our contributors who could make it turned up. Of course, our Stargazing man, Ken Campbell, couldn’t be there because he is now based in Liverpool but Marty Delfin, one of our political editors travelled down from Madrid with his partner and their little dog, Toby, for the event. Also there was the lady who looks after my dogs on a Wednesday when I’m out from 6am until 10pm delivering The News. I couldn’t do it without you, Jackie, so thanks go to you too! In the photo above are Pete and Satori from Woody’s Los Boliches and Anja and Jonny Erixon who are all agents for the paper.

The Future So, where do we go from here? Well, we’ve already changed and updated the look of The News. The old green flash on the front page has been removed (some people used to confuse us with the front of The Olive Press, so that’s gone) and we’ve made the “Take-a-Break” page easier to read and brighter. A lot of the old “grey” bits have been removed and our company green used to better advantage (we all hated that dull grey everywhere

anyway, so what better opportunity to change it than a landmark edition number and a birthday?) As we get more and more advertising coming in we will have to go up a few pages. Because of the way newspapers are printed, we can only go up in multiples of eight pages but, rest assured, we won’t be getting to the point where you need a crane to pick us up. We aim to stay small enough to be able to be rolled up and put in your pocket or folded away in your handbags and shopping bags. We intend to stay with the news being concise and to the point – no woffle will be creeping in from us – and with a balance of news and advertising that will keep us a newspaper rather than a vehicle just for advertising. If we became that, people wouldn’t keep their copies of The News for the week to keep picking up and reading until the next one was delivered and that would be no good to either our readers or our advertisers. We get incredibly few returns each week – in fact I get around 50 copies a week returned out of all the thousands we produce and, because we do our own deliveries, we know if we have to adjust the numbers of copies people get on a week-to-week basis. The returns are given to a charity that I deliver to for recycling.

Thank you all So, to sum up I would like to say a HUGE thankyou to all the staff here at The News, all our advertisers without whom, let’s face it, we wouldn’t be here, and of course to all our lovely and loyal readers. I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2013. by Kym Wickham

Community News Local man wins award RAFA held their annual Christmas bash last Saturday evening at the Tamisa Golf Hotel, Mijas Costa. The evening started with canapés and a welcome drink followed by a three-course meal. A raffle and a “guess the name of the bear” competition was held (her name turned out to be Catherine which was the name of the daughter of the lady who won the bear). Dancing then carried on to the music of Jo Layte. Awarded annually at the European Area Autumn Conference by the European Area Council to the Ordinary or Life Member who is judged to have displayed the best allround performance during the preceding year, the Dennis Emes shield is a much coveted award within the European branches of the Royal Air Forces Association.

This year the award went to local RAFA man Jack Griggs (pictured front, right)of the Benalmadena branch. Jack was presented with his award at Saturday’s event. The shield was originally presented to the Association by Dennis Emes MBE who was a very well respected and widely known Life Member of RAFA. In addition to his Life Membership of the Swiss Branch he was also

an Ordinary Member of the Lyon, Amsterdam, Malta GC and Republic of Ireland branches as well as two branches in the UK. He had great affection for the European Area and was a strong supporter of all the conferences. Across RAFA he presented several awards in his own name. He was relatively well-off and was recognised as a bit of a philanthropist as far as RAFA was concerned. Sadly he passed away in 2006.

Different Christmas Market

There are many Christmas markets to visit this time of the year. But one of them stands out and is in a very different style. In Scandinavia there are always Christmas trees, Santa Claus, glögg (mulled wine) and a lot of

Scandinavian food to taste. Flor Valentin, behind Centro Idea on the Mijas – Fuengirola road, will have their annual Christmas market this Saturday, December 15th where you can see a traditional Danish-Scandinavian style Christmas market.

Don’t miss this event and if you want a real Christmas tree, be in time, they normally go quickly! Read more of what the market will offer this year in their advert on page 13.

DAVID THE DOGMAN

Thanks to the hard work of all those involved, this year’s Christmas Fayre held on Sunday at St George’s Anglican Church, in the grounds of the English Cemetery in Málaga, was a tremendous success. The sun shone and, even before the announced start time, the crowds began to arrive.

Feet first?

All the stalls, from second hand clothes to bric-a-brac, did a roaring trade. Both the Baked Goods and the Preserves Stalls sold out in record time, the books and the bottles were (almost) flying off their shelves¸ and the “bacon butty” ladies had a hard time keeping up with demand! For those with more exotic taste, spicy kebabs from the Nigerian Stall were also available. The sum of €1,700 was raised. This money will be used to support the work of the chaplaincy. A big thanks to all who helped to make the Fayre such a success.

Cats have a 'righting reflex' that operates when they fall. First, the brain commands the head and neck muscles to put the head 'square' with the ground. Then the rest of the body aligns itself with the head and, hey presto, the cat ends up in a perfect position for a soft landing. Newborn kittens don't have this reflex, as it depends on a combination of eye and inner ear messages It might seem reasonable to assume that the greater the height of the fall, the worse the injuries. This is, however, only true up to a level of seven storeys; after that the fracture rate actually decreases. This is because after dropping for a distance of about five storeys, the cat reaches maximum speed, the so-called

terminal velocity of a falling body. At this point, the speed is constant and thus the inner ear is no longer aware and stimulated by acceleration. So the cat relaxes and spreads its legs out just as a freefall parachutist does when he is stabilising his descent. On landing, relaxed bodies are much less likely to fracture, which is also true of infants, and adults who are drunk. RONDELES FESTIVAL IN CASARABONELA A Fiesta of National Tourist Interest in Andalucia. The highlight of the 10 days of celebrations is the now famous and dramatic procession of the Virgin of the Rondeles from the Hermitage of Veracruz to the Church of Santiago Apostol through the steep narrow village streets. The only lighting for this unique event which takes place on December 12th comes from the burning of the oil-soaked esparto grass rondeles which illuminate the passage for the team carrying at

shoulder height the icon of the Virgin. The procession includes traditional music and carols for this festival of thanksgiving for the olive harvest which is known to date from pagan history but became a religious one towards the end of the 17th century. From midnight the religious aspect gives way to a more secular event as crowds gather round a bonfire in the village square and drink chocolate and eat bread with oil and garlic and Moorish fritters. The festival runs until Monday December 16th so there’s still plenty of time to

enjoy the event and visit the market.

Fish & Chips

There are many activities for children and adults and there are local craft demonstrations as well. Some of the local people invite visitors into their homes to look at nativity scenes.

March 21st April 19th

You could be taking your plans very seriously this week as you seem determined to put some secure footing in place. There will be some wellthought- out choices to make and you will be evaluating where you stand and your next step. You can make some pivotal turns at this point and you need to make sure they are the right ones for you, wherever you place your energy, the road expands and new horizons will appear.

This weeks recipe was sent in by Kate Buchan Sous Chef at Kimbridge Restaurant, near Romsey. Here is recipe using leeks and haddock which are both in season. The ingredients are widely available and we are using a sustainable fish.

You are being directed to have a rock solid plan about where you are going, what you are doing and why you are doing it and what you wish to achieve from your actions. Balance is needed in all your interactions and you should ideally be looking for win-win situations, others will be watching you – so make sure your actions are above reproach. The degree of blood, sweat and tears are typically linked with how much something is desired. Is something worth fighting for? No man is an island and there is only so much you can do on your own. When you are part of a team there are no limits to where you can go and what you can achieve. You may feel out of your comfort zone but this is only to encourage you to look at life from a different perspective, it is all about letting go of old mind sets and seeing life in an optimistic way. Socially this will be a good week and your personal magnetism is off the scale. A lot of attention is coming your way and although some can be quite a nice indulgence too much can lose its novelty and become annoying. You are now in a powerful position to direct your life with more influence and determination. Your inner strength is firing up and as the lava starts to flow inside you emanate an aura that attracts others. Take the time now to target areas of your life that need sorting out; your energy can move mountains and set off volcanoes this week. Your emotions may feel like nerve endings that are so highly acute and sensitive that you to feel it all, you are not in any sort of denial, from here you can speak from your heart. It is all coming up, rising from the depths to spill out this week. Communicating your feelings will move you forward in profound ways. As you expose the vulnerable parts of yourself you will feel liberated and have a clear view of what to do. You will be feeling so much more courageous and secure than you have for a while, all calculated moves and actions pay off in the best possible way. There is still the need to remain adaptable and open to new ideas and situations as they appear though, as they are likely to differ from what you expect. Take each day as it comes and pay attention to what you are doing in the moment instead of trying to plan the future too much.

LIBRA

Tensions of the past are slipping away Libra and some inner calmness is now taking over. There is basically a re-booting taking place where you have a much greater understanding of what is really going on and what is needed to ensure the outcome is what you want. You are working at bringing more balance to September 23rd - your personal relationships to ensure that there is enough give and take going October 22nd on. If a conversation needs to be had then this is the week to do it.

SCORPIO

October 23rd November 21st

There is no doubt about it you are a mover and a shaker. This week sees you charged up with a cunning clarity that allows you to take the driver’s seat. There is probably a feeling of certainty within you, of knowing what is right and what isn’t. Black and white, all or nothing – it doesn’t do you any good to linger in limbo land and that for that reason you are proactive and seek to transform situations for the better.

SAGITTARIUS There is a strange intensity in the air that seems alien to you, like something is pushing you towards a new beginning. The key here is not to become tempted by a quick fix and not to make choices, for instance, just to fit in or feel important and be admired by others. In the end it never lasts and November 22nd - becomes a waste of time. So make those decisions count and invest your December 21st energy in the longer term route that doesn’t waver or disintegrate.

CAPRICORN There is no smoke without fire and you have been smouldering deep down inside, an old issue is finally being cracked open which creates the feeling of being naked and exposed. If you do not know which way to turn in a key area why don’t you try a different direction to one you have tried before? You are very determined at December 22nd - the moment and if you channel this into positive activities then you will achieve January 19th the results that you desire. Rise above petty dramas and complete tasks at hand.

AQUARIUS

PISCES

February 19th March 20th

This week you will have an opportunity to take your individuality and bring it out into the world in a powerful way. At last your voice is being heard and you are going to find a way to make people stop, listen and realise that your vision is far from outlandish. In fact it helps a great deal to be a step ahead of the game, or a step ahead of the crowd by seeing things ahead of time. Prepare to be valued and respected for being different.

This week is all about uncovering important information through keen communicating but also listening with a receptive ear. If you listen to your core you will know you can have wealth without measure, you have the talent and ability that ensures you will succeed at anything you put your mind too. You are being lifted to a more leadership role – it is yours for the taking if you want it, lead by example and it will show others how they may rise above their circumstances too.

( Serves 4 )

• 4 tablespoons of olive oil • • 1kg of leeks • • 100 ml fish or vegetable stock • 250 grams of double cream • 25 grams of parmesan cheese • 50 grams of peeled and cooked

1 lemon, cut into wedges Fresh parsley sprigs

cocktail prawns (optional) • 4 unsmoked haddock portions, 5-6oz each • Salt and pepper

Directions Cut the tops and bottoms off the leeks and cut them in half lengthways, then finely slice across the leek. Wash thoroughly under cold water. Once the leeks are clean and drained, place them in a saucepan with three tablespoons of olive oil and gently cook until soft. Once the leeks are soft, add the stock and the cream, then simmer until it reduces by a third. Once reduced, add the parmesan cheese and mix in until it is all melted. Now add the prawns (if using) and heat thoroughly. Lightly season the haddock

fillets with salt and pepper. Heat the remaining olive oil in a frying pan and fry the haddock, skin-side down for 2-3 minutes until golden-brown and crisp. Carefully turn the fish over and cook for a further 1-2 minutes until the fish is golden-brown all over and cooked through. Serve by placing the leek mix in the centre of the plate, then placing the haddock on top. Serve it with a lemon wedge and a sprig of parsley. Enjoy!

Traditional Mince Pies

Ingredients:

• • • • •

( Makes 24 )

1¼ lb (560 g) mincemeat 12 oz (350 g) plain flour 3 oz (75 g) lard 3 oz (75 g) butter pinch of salt

For the top:

• •

a little milk icing sugar

Directions Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 6, 400°F (200°C).You will also need one (or two) trays of 2½ inch (6 cm) patty tins, one fluted 3 inch (7.5 cm) pastry cutter and one 2½ inch (6 cm) cutter. Make up the pastry by sifting the flour and salt into a mixing bowl and rubbing the fats into it until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Then add just enough cold water to mix to a dough that leaves the bowl clean. Leave the pastry to rest in a polythene bag in the refrigerator for 2030 minutes, then roll half of it out as thinly as possible and cut it into two dozen 3 inch (7.5 cm) rounds, gathering up the scraps and re-rolling. Then do the same with the other half of the pastry, this time using the 2½ inch (6 cm) cutter.

Now grease the patty tins lightly and line them with the larger rounds. Fill these with mincemeat to the level of the edges of the pastry. Dampen the edges of the smaller rounds of pastry with water and press them lightly into position to form lids, sealing the edges. Brush each one with milk and make three snips in the tops with a pair of scissors. Bake near the top of the oven for 25-30 minutes until light golden brown. Cool on a wire tray and sprinkle with icing sugar. When cool, store in an airtight container.

Periodontal disease is also caused by bacteria like gingivitis. As we explained last time periodontal disease affects the bone and causes bone loss. In old text books periodontal disease was divided into two groups, one which affected childrens' teeth – mainly the first incisor and first molar – called juvenile periodontitis and the other which affects adults – classified as chronic periodontitis. Later on this classification changed but this is of more interest to fellow professionals rather than the general public. The most important factor is that the disease should be recognised in the early stages and acted upon. It generally progresses very slowly, unlike a rare type of periodontitis known as acute periodontitis which progresses very rapidly, causing enormous bone loss.

SIGNS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE As explained previously, gingivitis could be recognised by swollen

gums, redness, bleeding etc. Treatment is just to maintain good oral hygiene and it is reversible, but sadly this does not apply to periodontitis . In periodontitis bleeding, swelling and bad breath are the most common features but you also see: A. bone loss which may be local or general B. mobility depending on the degree of bone loss C. puss depending on the stage of the disease . D. deep pockets around the teeth.

One other sign that is quite often seen is long clinical crown of the tooth/teeth which is caused by bone loss. Do not forget where bone goes, gum follows – as a result of bone loss around the teeth, gum automatically follows the bone and that is why teeth look longer in patients with chronic periodontitis . Part two next week. Samuel Ramsey DDS; MSc(UCL) London. Diploma oral periodontics.

A new boardgame, with a rather cheeky content has gone on sale

A trilogy and now a game - Fifty Shades is about to get even bigger … but we are told you can keep your clothes on unless you buy the “upgrade”! Hold on to your hats ladies, a new board game has just hit W H Smith and Amazon in time for Christmas.

If you guess the same person you would then get points. The books have sold over 50 million copies worldwide.

Based on the erotic E. L. James trilogy of novels ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ the game encourages friends to ask each other a series of increasingly intimate questions and all you have to do is come up with the person most likely to be associated with the deed as the answer thought of by the questioner.

The game does not, we are told, necessarily mean you have to start taking your clothes off but for a little extra cash, you can purchase the ‘Red Room Expansion Pack’, which is apparently based on Christian Grey’s ‘playroom’ in the book, and which will not spare any blushes.

Sale at Fia i Backen

Sometimes you have to make a difficult decision, and that is what Fia Ensgård, owner of the fashion boutique Fia i Backen in Nueva Andalucia, has made. She has decided to let go of the childrens’ clothing and concentrate her business on the ladies wear. Therefore there is a sale ongoing for the whole stock of wonderful clothes for children made by designers

such as Lasse Åberg, Maxomorra and Near It. The discounts are up to 50% ,so why not buy something nice for the children or grandchildren at bargain prices as a Christmas present! You can find the boutique at the corner of Avenida Miguel de Cervantes and Plaza Baltasar Gracián 1, in Nueva Andalucía. Text & photo by Anja Erikson

The game, produced by Imagination Games, has been approved by Fifty Shades' author E. L. James and hopes to bring some of that kinky fun into homes this year. Boss Shane Yeend said: "We are delighted to be partnering with E L James on this project. The Fifty Shades books are a bona fide cultural phenomenon, and they offer an exciting new play pattern for our range of party games

that allows everyone to finally reveal their Inner Goddess." It would seem that the phenomenon has spread far and wide and, just have a look below at further news on the subject. So, for those of us who haven’t a clue what all the fuss is about, it sounds like there’s going to be a whole new topic of conversation after the festive season!

Ann Summers’ Jameson sales up Booming sales for companies during the recession is unusual but, thanks to the E L James book Fifty Shades of Grey, the Ann Summers’ chain of shops have had a boom time with many of their ‘racy’ lines similar to those featured in the book selling like hot cakes and sales overall are up 78% according to the chain. Specifically blindfolds and handcuff sales are up 60% and 30% respectively with online sales up 30%. Executive Jacqueline Gold said: “What Fifty Shades has done is to move erotic fiction from the back of the book store to the front and suddenly everyone wants a piece. Attitudes have changed

and rightly so because why shouldn't people be able to spice up their sex lives? "There are a lot of quite surprising potential partnerships we're negotiating at the moment – companies who would never have thought of getting involved with Ann Summers before – four of which, excitingly, are very close to fruition." Sounds like the mulled wine won’t be the only thing with a bit of spice in it this Christmas for a lot of people!

The ashes of former Daily Express newspaper Editor Derek Jameson were scattered on London’s Fleet Street recently. A Cockney, Jameson had been brought up in care and he eventually became one of Britain’s bestknown newspapermen. He died in September aged 82 after a heart attack. A memorial service was held at the Fleet Street Church of St Bride’s. Jameson had poignantly requested: “Scatter my ashes in Fleet Street where my spirit may hear again the laughing voices in the night.”

CHANGES ARE COMING! BUT DON’T WORRY! EUROSAT ARE ON HAND TO OFFER THEIR EXPERTISE ON TV and SATELLITE

We can now offer an alternative solution without additional dishes, but the "end-user" will need ADSL internet. The cost of the system installed is 350: If you look at the attached UK TV channel list you can see which channels will be available. We will need some information from you before we can install the system, As you can imagine, our telephones are very - very busy! and stocks of the internet boxes are limited. We are now taking installation orders for next Wednesday ! There is another option we were looking into which required a 2nd satellite dish aligned to an alternative satellite with another satellite receiver for just BBC 1 & ITV 1, BUT the encoding system which this receiver uses is due to change at the end of January and it may be that this solution will no longer work as from February ! So, to sum up there will only be viewing of UK channels via the internet !!! THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE CHANNELS WHICH YOU CAN VIEW WITH OUR SYSTEM AND NO SATELLITE DISH IS REQUIRED

A friend in London telephoned the Dept of Works and Pensions on my behalf re what the latest position is with the W.F.A. for ex-pats. She was told that the Dept have been inundated

However, I know of

Fuengirola

with thousands of replies from all over the World. They have finished sending out the payments to U.K. pensioners and have now commenced sending payments to ex-pat pensioners who applied and are qualified to receive the payment.

Anyone who has not applied should do so now although applications will be accepted up until 30th March 2013.

Because of the number of applications received by the Dept the payout of the payment will be staggered until the 31st.March,2013.

Brian Johnston Jim Kelly (28th November edition) has obviously taken considerable time and effort to dig out all his facts and figures in order to convince us poor pensioners' that we are really well off, or should be or could be or may be able to claim more money from the State.

cases where British pensioners have paid in 30 years or more National Insurance Contributions and are existing on about £70 a week, so get real Jim and next time try harder to inform us of actual Immigrant payments being presently made, instead of a mind-boggling litigation of what we pensioners might get.

Comment Stargazing By Ken Campbell

If you would like to be kept up to date or take part in any of the events then go to www.kencampbell.info

Sir Patrick Moore CBE It was with great sadness that the world heard on Sunday of the death of Sir Patrick Moore 89, a true eccentric and a television legend.

P

atrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore was born on 4th March 1923 in Pinner, Middlesex, England. He was the only child of Captain Charles Trachsel Caldwell-Moore and his beloved mother Gertrude. His early life was dogged by ill health and so he spent a lot of his early years at home reading. When he was six years old he found a book about the Solar System and it was from this that he became interested in astronomy.

H

e lied about his age and joined the RAF aged 16 where from 1940 to 1945 he served as a navigator with bomber command. His only romance ended when his fiancée, a nurse called Lorna, was killed by a German bomb which struck her ambulance. He never really got over her loss and so never married. In his biography he states “if I saw the entire German nation sinking into the sea, I could be relied upon to help push it down". He spent the rest of his life living in Selsey, Sussex with his mother until her death in 1981.

A

fter the war Sir Patrick took a number of teaching jobs at various institutes and was invited to run a small observatory in East Grinstead after his mentor – the man who ran the observatory – was killed in a road accident. In his entire career he never claimed to be a ‘professional’ astronomer, he always preferred to be called a journalist and keen amateur astronomer. He wrote his first book in 1950 called ‘A Guide to the Moon’ and went on to write over 100 more books some of which were ‘Boys’ Own’ adventure sci-fi stories.

I

n 1957 he was approached by the BBC to present a monthly TV programme to be entitled ‘Star Map’. This was rechristened ‘The Sky At Night’. It was originally intended to only run for six episodes but with Patrick’s enthusiasm it was extended somewhat to 55 years. The first episode was broadcast on 26th April 1957 at 10:30 pm. Sir Patrick presented every episode (bar one) ever since, making him the longest running TV presenter in the world. His last episode was broadcast on Sunday 3rd December. In recent years ill health prevented him from going to go to the TV studios so recordings were made from his home ‘Farthings’ and additional presenters were brought in to help with the programme. In all his time at the BBC he never had a contract with them – he always maintained that a contract can be

broken but a handshake can never be. arly editions of the programme were broadcast ‘live’ and there have been several times that it has not always gone to plan. In one edition he was going to broadcast live images from his telescope of Saturn but on the night it was completely cloudy and he had to busk his way through 25 minutes of nothingness. On another occasion he was talking so quickly that he managed to swallow a very large fly, there was no choice but to gulp it down. His mother remarked ‘Well it might have been terrible for you but it was much worse for the fly!’

E

A

part from his TV appearances he was a gifted musician playing the piano and xylophone and even composing several works. It was his choice that the now iconic music Jean Sibelius' Pelléas et Mélisande or ‘At the Castle Gate’ was chosen as the theme music for The Sky at Night.

H

e was awarded the OBE in 1968 and promoted to CBE in 1988. In 1999 he was knighted for services to the popularisation of science and to broadcasting.

H

is trade-mark monocle, rapid fire speaking, dishevelled hair and badly-fitting suits helped create the image of a head-in-the-clouds nutty professor but I met Sir Patrick several times – the first time when I was only 10 years old – and I found him to have a wicked sense of humour, infinite patience and an all round truly nice guy. It was his enthusiam for the subject that inspired me to take up my interest in astronomy and I will miss him terribly. Let’s hope that he has now met up with his mother and especially his Lorna on a star he can call home. Happy Stargazing!

Mijas Bowls Club “Ball Malaga Rankings Awards and Chain” Tournament Season 2011/2012 “Ball and Chain” Tournament Swings to an Exciting Finish. There were some delays and postponements due to the unprecedented bad weather which we have been experiencing in southern Spain but the Mijas Bowls Club “Ball and Chain” final was completed last Thursday with a nail- biting finish. The “Ball and Chain” considered to be the oldest bowling competition on the Costa is played at Mijas Lawn Bowls Club every year. The teams consist of husband and wife pairs and the competition is open to all the Costa del Sol bowls clubs. Semi-finalists were Jackie Simmonds & Derek Rawnsley from Lauro and Geraldine & Rob Robinson

from Mijas. The other semi-finalists were Norma & Bob Ewens from Benalmadena and Frank & Pauline Ball from Mijas. It ended up a hard fought final between the Robinsons and the Balls with Rob and Geraldine finally coming out on top. Sponsors were BMI Insurance of Fuengirola, and numerous local restaurants and businesses donated raffle prizes. Competition secretary Roberto Wright said “It was difficult ensuring that

UK top France in car markets The UK has overtaken France to become Europe's second-biggest car market following strong November and 11-month sales. New-car sales in the UK increased 5.4 percent to 1.92 million vehicles through November, while volume in France dropped 13.8 percent to 1.73 million. Sales in Germany, Europe's No. 1 market, fell 2 percent to 2.88 million. Private retail customers are driving the rise in sales in the UK, according to Paul Everitt,

CEO of industry association SMMT. The SMMT said demand for small cars showed aboveaverage growth during the January to November period. The Ford Fiesta has been Britain's top seller so far this year, but demand also has been high for the Ford

Similar to London Underground commuters who are able to access WiFi from some stations, cab passengers will have 15

minutes of free internet access after watching a 15second advert. The CabWiFi network received approval by Transport for London last Thursday after start-up company Eyetease spent two years on their bid for the novel idea.

The planned format followed last year’s with three matches spread over two days. The first day two matches were a great success, due to the quality

of bowling and the very sporting manner in which they were played. The five top men and ladies from www.bowlinginspain.com rankings list for the 2012/2012 season, (Home side), battled against a starstudded Invitation side, (Away side), essentially “the cream against the cream”! The score after the first

day’s two matches favoured the Invitation team by 15 points to nine. Unfortunately, heavy rain caused the second day’s match to be cancelled, together with the Award Ceremony. In view of the overcrowded bowling calendar due to league matches being postponed

in the inclement weather, the Organiser, John Carr, decided to curtail the event after the first day, handing victory to the Invitation team. Home Team 1.Margaret Kain (Captain) 1.Gordon Kain (Captain) 2.Kate Morris 2.Brian Todd 3.Mary Detheridge

WiFi for London’s black cabs London's iconic black cabs are set to be the next WiFi hotspots as a free internet service will be rolled out early next year.

With free access to the internet and their own login, cab drivers will be able to offset the often high cost of data charges incurred using taxi apps, which some drivers claim have doubled their phone bills in recent months.

They have been seen together just a handful of times in the past few months. But now that the X Factor winner has been decided, triumphant judge Nicole Scherzinger finally has some time to spend with her boyfriend Lewis Hamilton. The pair looked closer than ever as they attended the Jack Reacher premiere

in Leicester Square on Monday night. Nicole, 34, and her F1 racing partner were seen staring into each others' eyes as they hugged on the red carpet. Lewis, 27, looked delighted to be spending some time with his girlfriend, who has been busy with the reality show since she joined the judging panel in June.

Pacquiao refuses to quit For the fourth time in eight years, Marquez and Pacquiao produced a gripping physical encounter and traded a knockdown apiece before the Mexican caught his Filipino foil flush with a crunching right in the final second of the sixth stanza. With Pacquiao

momentarily unconscious and no 'saved by the bell' rule, referee Kenny Bayless ended the bout. Marquez's 40th career knockout brought him redemption, having seen his first three bouts with 'PacMan' end in a draw and two

contentious decision defeats. But Pacquiao now finds himself at a career crossroads with two straight defeats to his name

following June's controversial points loss to Timothy Bradley.

Wayne’s Poker Weekly Tips A number of people have asked me how do you play Stud – well here are the basic rules to get you started. Before the start of the Texas Hold'em boom over 10 years ago, Stud had always been the most popular poker variation in the United States. The game is played with two to eight players. Probably the biggest difference between Seven Card Stud and Texas Hold'em is that Seven Card Stud is a non-flop game. Each

BWS.

player gets dealt a total of seven cards, of which three are dealt face down and four are dealt face up. From these seven cards the player has to choose his best five-card combination. The hand rankings are identical to those in Hold'em; a Royal Flush is the best possible hand and the worst hand is the high card hand (no pair). Every player starts off with getting dealt three cards; two cards face-down and one

card face-up. The two facedown cards are called the 'hole cards' and the face-up card is called the 'door card'. Based on these three cards you decide whether or not you want to continue with the hand. Like in any poker variation, hand selection is extremely important in Seven Card Stud. Antes, bring-in and betting. Every player pays an ante before getting dealt any cards. In our example we are playing a 1€/2€ Stud game with a 0.10€ ante and a 0.50€ bring-in. The three cards are dealt and the player with the lowest door card is forced to pay the bring-in of 0.50€.This player can also choose to bet 1€, which is called 'to complete'. The betting

continues clockwise around the table, with players having the option to call, raise or fold. Once the betting is complete, every player left in the hand is dealt a fourth cards (4th street). Now, and in all rounds still to come, the player with the highest upcards is the one who starts the betting. The minimum bets for the remainder of the hand are: 4th street: 1€ 5th, 6th & amp; 7th street (the river) : 2€ Hand Selection Just like in any other poker variation, it is important to choose your starting han ds. I’ll cover this in more detail in later articles.

Swann wants series win

Clinical Malaga demolish Granada

Graeme Swann says England need to seal a series victory against India so that the team's 'magnificent' wins are not wasted. England 523 & 41-3 beat India 316 and 247 by seven wickets.

Malaga 4 - 0 Granada After the midweek draw in the Champion’s league against Anderlecht it was back to business in the league in a Andalucian derby. Granada started brightly and on 14 minutes Caballero had to make a brilliant save to keep out a Diakhate header from a corner. In the 26th minute Malaga punished Granada, after a Diakhate slip left Joaquin in the clear and he ran in to coolly put the ball past keeper Toño. Three minutes later Ighalo showed some dribbling skills to get

past Demichelis, but followed it up with a weak shot. Gamez then rocked the Granada crossbar before Saviola made it two for Malaga, cutting in from the left to put the ball low past Toño. Granada were having plenty of the ball but lacked the killer touch in the final third, and Malaga keeper Caballero again showed great form with saves from Ighalo and Torje. The second half went Malaga’s way for the first 20 minutes, but they couldn’t break through the Granada back line, and then a shot from Ighalo for Granada struck a post on 68 minutes and Malaga broke out quickly, getting the ball to Portillo whose shot dropped just over the bar. The home side’s constant pressure finally came to fruition in the 75th minute when from a free kick

Saviola celebrates his goal

Camacho headed home to make it three. Malaga weren’t letting up and Toño had to make two further saves before Roque Santa Cruz slotted in the fourth goal with just five minutes left. In the end then a great win that nicely sets up the next league game – another local derby against old rivals Sevilla in the Sanchez Pizjuan next Saturday evening. Report by Scott Forbes

England wrapped up a seven-wicket victory on day five of the third Test to take a 2-1 lead and move close to the first series win in India since 1985. James Anderson bowled last man Pragyan Ojha with the 10th ball of the day, dismissing India for 247 in Kolkata. Chasing 41, England lost Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen to slip to 8-3, but were taken home by Nick Compton and Ian Bell. If England avoid defeat, not only will they end their 27-year wait for a series win in India, but also condemn their hosts to a first home loss since Australia won 21 in 2004.

Victory in the final match for Cook's men would also see India lose three matches in a home series for the first time since the all-conquering West Indies side triumphed 3-0 in 1983. The win at Eden Gardens, where India were unbeaten in seven games dating back to 1999, completes a remarkable turnaround for the tourists, who were thrashed by nine wickets in the first Test in Ahmedabad. After that defeat they faced criticism for another failure to make firstinnings runs in Asia and the decision to omit leftarm spinner Monty Panesar. But, despite India captain Mahendra Dhoni winning the toss in Mumbai and Kolkata on turning wickets that would supposedly favour the hosts, England have outplayed the home side in all departments. In a repeat of Mumbai, England's third-Test win came as a result of restricting Dhoni's side on day one, making a huge first-innings total, then taking advantage of India's batting fragility in the second innings. The final Test begins in Nagpur on Thursday.

Muller delighted for 'incredible' record-breaking Messi Bayern Munich legend Gerd Muller has showered praise on Lionel Messi for surpassing his goal-scoring record, but hinted that he might have scored more against modern defences. The Barcelona forward equalled his tally of 85 goals in a calendar year against Betis on Sunday night, and then quickly surpassed it with a second first-half goal from an Andres Iniesta backheel. With the record now standing at 86 and with the possibility of it finishing even higher, Muller has heralded the Camp Nou forward despite making it clear that attackers have it easier in the 21st century in his opinion.

Oldest ‘swinger’ in town wins at 53 Peter Senior held his nerve in "near impossible" conditions to become the oldest Australian Open golf champion. The 53-yearold overcame galeforce winds and a three-hour delay at the windswept Lakes course in Sydney on Sunday to post a dogged final-round even-par 72 to win the Stonehaven Cup by a shot from a valiant Brendan Jones (71). Cameron Percy (73) finished third a further shot back. Senior tallied four-under for the tournament after rounds of 75-68-69-72.
