The office will be closed from today Wednesday 19th december until Wednesday 2nd January with the next issue coming out on Thursday 3rd January. The reason is that, traditionally it is the only day that printers don’t print so we can’t get it printed in time to come out on the Wednesday. Payment for non-urgent ambulance journeys
The Health Ministry has proposed a co-payment system for non-urgent use of ambulances that will amount to €5 per trip. The system is expected to be passed as an executive order at the next meeting between Madrid and the regional governments, which are responsible for healthcare in Spain, due to take place on Thursday of next
week. The draft order defines three types of trip: the transfer of a patient from a health centre to his home after receiving emergency treatment or after being released from hospital; those that are "occasional" and those that
are "regular" in the case of chronically ill people receiving dialysis or cancer treatment, for example. The order establishes a monthly maximum to be paid on the basis of the patients’ income. For those
earning between €18,000 and €100,000, the maximum payment per month is €20.
For those earning less than €18,000, it is €10 euros, and €60 for those earning over €100,000.

Rajoy defends his reforms Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told the Partido Popular’s (PP) interparliamentary meeting of lawmakers on Monday that “all of those Spaniards who don’t have jobs and who are going through rough times are always on my mind. But everything that this government does everything - is being done
so that they can recover their lives and welfare.”
The PM admitted that his first year in office has been one of “pain and suffering” for many Spaniards, but insisted that all the cuts implemented by his government have been for the good of the people. He took a swipe at José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero’s
government for “leaving us with a crushing deficit.” He said the Socialists must bear the “historical blame” for leaving the social services on the verge of collapse. Rajoy said he understood all the criticisms and protests except one: “No one can say that this government has stood around with its
hands in its pockets.” He said 2013 will be a “complicated” and “difficult” year but the economy will be stabilised.
“Each reform is an irreversible step toward the goal of recovery,” he said. “Our efforts are not falling into a black hole and by the end of next year they will start to bear fruit.”

Gao Ping, 45, was a high flyer and had been photographed with King Juan Carlos and China's President Hu Jintao. He was arrested along with 80
other suspects in October but later released because of a judicial mistake.
Other names being linked by the police to the network include the family of socialite Cuqui Fierro, the Marquis of Revilla, former Banesto director Enrique Lasarte and
several members of a branch of the Borbon family distantly related to King Juan Carlos.
More than 500 police took part in "Operation Emperor" in the autumn, seizing €10 million in cash in raids that took place across the country, as well as some 200 vehicles,

Top anti-corruption prosecutor Antonio Salinas said the network had been laundering between €200,000 and €300,000 a year for several years, while dodging taxes, bribing officials and forging documents.

Illegal immigrants to Nuclear plant begins a gradual get free healthcare shutdown The country’s oldest nuclear reactor disconnected its energy supply to the nation’s electric grid on Sunday as part of a gradual shutdown of the Garoña plant, after its owners, Endesa and Iberdrola, decided to terminate its operations seven months ahead of schedule to avoid paying a new energy tax imposed by the government which comes into effect on January 1st.
According to Nuclenor, the partnership formed by Endesa and Iberdrola, it would cost €153 million a year to continue operating the plant because of the tax. Despite the fact that the plant only provided about one percent of the country’s electrical power, it had been the focus of increasing concerns by environmentalists and
The Constitutional Court has lifted part of the suspension of a decree approved by the former Socialist regional government in the Basque country aimed at circumventing legislation passed by the central government in Madrid withdrawing free healthcare to immigrants without papers.

some scientists after the Fukushima nuclear accident earlier this year. The previous Socialist government had prolonged the lifespan of Garoña until next July, but the €2,190 tax on each kilo of uranium spent introduced by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, forced Endesa and Iberdrola to bring forward the closing date.
Rafael González, the mayor of Valle de Tobalina where Garoña is located, said that the closure would mean the loss of about 300 direct jobs plus 500 subcontractors.
While in opposition in 2009, Rajoy promised to keep the plant going until well after 2013. “They deceived us all,” said one union leader.
governments as to which one will prevail, immigrants will continue to receive free healthcare in the Basque Country.
The court ruled that that the ban on attending illegal immigrants – except pregnant women, minors and emergencies – not only put their health at risk but also undermined campaigns against the spread of infectious diseases, thereby “seriously affecting the health of
society as a whole”.
The court also said the right to free healthcare “could not be nullified by the mere consideration of eventual economic savings”.
Some 910,000 people, of whom around 25,000 live in the Basque Country, were deprived of free healthcare by the central government earlier this year.
Santander to absorb Banesto and Banif Banco Santander is to absorb two Spanish banks, Banesto and Banif, and will close 700 branches in the process.
Santander has not said how many jobs would go, but but has promised that job cuts would be implemented gradually
through transfers around the group, natural turnover and voluntary redundancy.
Santander already owns 90% of Banesto and will buy out the minority shareholders, while it already owns all of Banif. The three banks have
4,664 branches in Spain between them. Santander has predicted that the merger will save it €520 million a year in three years' time. Santander said the total number of all bank branches in Spain was expected to fall to 30,000 by the end of 2015, down from 46,000 in 2008.

Evictions more than double this year The number of foreclosure proceedings started since the beginning of this year was more than double for the same period in 2011, the head of the Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), Gonzalo Moliner, told Parliament on Monday.
During his presentation of the CGPJ’s annual report for 2011 to the congressional justice committee, Moliner said evictions this year were up 134 per cent.
A CGPJ spokesman said Moliner was referring to all foreclosures, including commercial property, garages and second homes, which came to 182,178. Evictions have jumped from 58,686 in 2008 to 93,319 in 2009 before falling 16.9 per cent in 2010 to 77,854. Name-and-shame list for tax cheats
Finance minister Cristóbal montoro has said the government is considering making public a list of tax dodgers and people who are behind on their tax payments. He told the Upper House that the fight against tax fraud lies to a large extent on pricking social consciousness to encourage voluntary payment. He said the list would include all of those with overdue debts owing to the tax office, regardless of their social status. He also criticised the media for calling the government’s amnesty for tax dodgers a failure because it brought in €1.2 billion, just under the amount expected, pointing out that they themselves have “large debts” with the inland revenue.

Gun debate flares as Newtown funerals begin
Two pro-gun US senators - Democrats Mark Warner and Joe Manchin, who have "A" ratings from the National Rifle Association (NRA) - called for changes to firearm laws, as the first of the 26 victims of Newtown school shootings were buried on Monday.
Despite his long history of pro-gun views, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin said during a TV interview that it was time to "move beyond rhetoric" on gun control. Mr Manchin, a gun owner and frequent hunter, said: "I don't know anyone in the sporting or hunting arena that goes out with an assault rifle." Virginia Senator Mark Warner, another Democrat who has backed gun owner's rights, told reporters outside the Virginia capitol that the "status quo isn't acceptable". He said he had been approached repeatedly over the weekend as people began to seek answers and solutions. On Sunday President Barack Obama told residents at a vigil in Newtown the US must do more to protect its children: "We can't tolerate this any more, these tragedies must end and to end them we must change."
On Monday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said tighter gun control laws are part of the answer to violence in the US, but stressed that the president did not have a specific policy to announce:
"It's a complex problem that will require a complex solution and no single piece of legislation, no single action will fully address the problem." He added that the president supports reinstating an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. California Senator Dianne Feinstein, a long-time advocate for gun regulations, said on Sunday she would introduce assault weapons ban legislation at the beginning of the next congressional session.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who backs stricter regulation, called on Mr Obama and Congress to pass several gun regulation proposals, including requiring a criminal background check for all gun sales, making gun trafficking a felony and a ban on assault weapons. Noah Pozner and Jack Pinto, both aged six, were buried on Monday. They were among 20 children and six adults killed at Sandy Hook school in Connecticut. Other victims' funerals will be held throughout the week, and the town has already begun removing Christmas decorations in mourning. Two adults who were
injured in the attack survived and are recovering in hospital. They will be crucial witnesses as police continue their investigation. Lt Paul Vance said children who witnessed the attack would also be interviewed in the presence of parents and professionals. The Sandy Hook gunman, Adam Lanza, took his own life at the end of a killing spree that began with him shooting dead his mother.
Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy has declared a moment of silence for the
entire state on Friday morning at 09:00 local time, a week after the shooting. He asked houses of worship with bells to ring them 26 times – one for each victim at the school. Mr Malloy has also signed an executive order making an unused school in neighbouring town immediately available for Sandy Hook's students – with classes reported to be pencilled in for Wednesday. It could be months before the school building is available for use again because it remains an active crime scene.

UMP agrees new leadership vote
The two leadership rivals in the centre-right UMP party have agreed to hold a re-run of their controversial leadership election. The fresh poll will again pit Jean-francois cope and former Prime Minister francois fillon against each other. Both claimed victory in november's poll to succeed nicolas Sarkozy as leader of the UMP. Mr cope was declared the narrow winner of the first vote, but the result was challenged by Mr fillon, who went on to form a breakaway splinter group of UMP members. The party is expected to reunite before the poll, which is scheduled to take place before parliament reconvenes after the summer recess in October. UganDa
‘Don't kill gay people’
as MPs continue to consider a controversial anti-Homosexuality Bill, in his first public comments on the bill for some time, President Yoweri Museveni said on Monday: "If there are some homosexuals, we shall not kill or persecute them but there should be no promotion of homosexuality.” The original version of the bill stipulated the death penalty for some homosexual acts but this has reportedly been dropped.
The government has always stressed that the bill was introduced by an individual MP and was not official policy.Ministers have warned MPs that passing the bill would have implications for foreign relations. It has been condemned by Western donors, who have suggested that aid could be cut if it is passed.

Depardieu 'to give up passport'
In a letter to the weekly Le Journal du Dimanche, actor Gerard Depardieu has lambasted the French government for punishing "success, creation and talent" and said he intends to hand back his French passport. After the 63year-old actor announced last week he was moving to the small Belgian town of Nechin just over the French border, Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault
suggested the move was unpatriotic at a time of cutbacks: "I find this quite shabby. All that just to avoid paying tax. Paying a tax is an act of solidarity, a patriotic act."
Next year, the top rate of income tax in France is due to become 75% on earnings above €1 million. It is currently 50% in Belgium. In his letter, Depardieu said he was not
asking for approval “but I could at least be respected”, adding that “all of those who have left France have not been insulted as I have been". Depardieu said that during his long career he had paid €145 million to the French taxman. Three months ago France's richest man, Bernard Arnault, announced plans to relocate to Belgium although he denied it was for tax reasons.

Prisoners received EWS N benefits in jail
this page written by Vic Gardner
IN BRIEF
ONE OF the major problems with Government institutions in Britain is that they sometimes have difficulty communicating with each other – often with embarrassing results.
It was recently revealed that some prisoners, who should not receive benefits, had in fact been receiving them and the problem was first reported in 1994. The Mail on
Sunday recently highlighted the fact that prisoners had been wrongly paid £18-million over the past four years that has not been refunded to the Government.
It was only in February of this year that the system was changed by Iain Duncan Smith at the Department of Work and Pensions. The department now cross references files with the Ministry of
Angler dies as wet weather continues THE never-ending wet weather continues in Britain with flood warnings over the weekend and the death of an 33-year-old angler who was being swept towards the sea at Becketts Bank between Peterlee and Hartlepool. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon and was attended by the Coastguard and an RAF helicopter which airlifted the man to hospital. Another angler, a 57year-old relative, was released after treatment. Earlier 15 anglers were knocked over by a freak wave on Roker Pier in Sunderland. One of them was airlifted to hospital suffering from a suspected
broken leg. Meanwhile in Cornwall surfers were out in force as eight to ten feet waves pounded the coastline. Officials were warning surfers not to surf beyond their capabilities in the rough sea.
Justice to prevent the problem from reoccurring.
Conservative MP Philip Davies suggested paying criminals after they had been jailed for committing crimes was so ludicrous ‘it beggars belief.’ It is exactly the sort of thing that makes people reluctant to pay tax in Britain and really doesn’t help anyone.
Boris on the Eurozone MAYOR of London Boris Johnson has suggested that leaving the European Union would not be the end of the world and he pointed out that 15 years ago business leaders were suggesting calamity if Britain did not join the Euro. Now, with the Eurozone in crisis, the Mayor is saying that while he would prefer Britain to remain in the EU for the single market, it should be prepared to walk away unless a new relationship can be negotiated and Britain can withdraw from what he described as “a lot of nonsensical policies.” He said he’d like to see the public given an opportunity to vote on the issue.

Costs rise for deporting terrorists
Britain has blamed European human rights legislation for delaying the deportation of terror suspects and the Government recently disclosed that the legal aid bill paid by the taxpayer for Abu Qatada stands at more than £500,000. The Special Immigration Appeals Commission last month upheld Qatada’s appeal against deportation to Jordan because it feared evidence from witnesses that had been tortured could be used against him in that country.
The Government is appealing against the decision. The legal aid bill is not final and is still rising. Qatada is currently on bail and wearing an electronic tag. LONDON

The English Premier League’s big story has to be Queen’s Park Rangers’ 2-1 London derby win over Fulham. It was Rangers’ first win of the season and it follows three games unbeaten for Harry Redknapp as manager. Can he now do what previously seemed impossible and keep the club in the top flight?

The Queen attends A British boy aged 6, a Cabinet meeting dies in Connecticut for the first time School massacre The Queen had never attended a cabinet meeting before and the last time a British monarch did was during George III’s reign in the 18th century – despite earlier reports that Queen Victoria had attended during her reign.
To mark the occasion the Government’s Cabinet presented the Queen with a set of 60 placemats (one for each year of her reign) purchased by the Secretaries of State to mark her Diamond Jubilee. The mats, which aides said were "bespoke" and heat-resistant up to 100 degrees celsius, were suggested by Buckingham Palace.

Ministers lined up to shake hands with the monarch before they all went into the final Cabinet of the year.
During her half-hour at the famous table in Number 10, she sat between Mr Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague. Ministers have described the visit as "a great honour" but constitutional experts warn it blurs the boundaries between government and monarchy. George VI, the Queen's father, met Cabinet

Mr Hague later announced that the southern part of British Antarctic Territory will be named "Queen Elizabeth Land" to mark the Jubilee.

Twenty children and seven adults, including the gunman's mother, died before Adam Lanza, 20, turned a gun on himself at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. It has been confirmed that US President Barack Obama will attend a memorial service in Newtown later today, and will speak at an interfaith vigil for families of the victims.
The father of gunman Adam Lanza released a statement on Saturday night. He said: "Our hearts go out to the families and friends who lost loved ones and to all

NGOs are the Best places to buy the Fat One new Magi This year, because of the crisis, the number of children who will get presents from charities on January 6th has quadrupled, converting the NGOs into the new Three Kings, according to the Malaga Association of Friends of Poor Families (Amfremar). Its president, Fernando Gutiérrez, said more and more middle class families are turning to the NGOs for help to make their children happy on that special day. “It means a lot of work for everyone concerned but it’s worth it when you see the smiles on the kids’ faces,” Gutierrez said. And this year there will be more Three Kings than ever before because many unemployed men are

Earth tremors alarm Jaén town residents
Over the past two weeks, more than 200 earth tremors have been registered by a team sent by the National Geographical Institute (IGN) to explain the phenomenon to the 7,000-odd people in Torreperogil in Jaen province. The strongest tremor registered 3.5 on the Moment magnitude scale, the modern equivalent of the Richter scale developed more than 80 years ago. The strongest shockwaves were registered three kilometres beneath ground level but what is worrying the residents most is that it’s the first time they have felt any tremor – unlike towns in Murcia or Almeria where tremors are fairly common.
Pub owner Juan Hidalgo, who thought his gas boiler had exploded when the biggest tremor hit the town, said he hadn’t been able to sleep all night, while many people have left their homes in Torreperogil and a primary school was closed as a precaution due to cracks in the structure of the building. One father eliminates festivities
The Vicente Aleixandre school in Malaga capital has cancelled its chestnut fiesta this year because the father of one pupil fears his son may choke.
The man’s fear of his child choking to death on food provided by others than his own family has also led to the cancellation of the school’s traditional Christmas breakfast. Both events will be replaced by workshops in which the families can participate. To cap it all, next Andalucia Day (February 28th) the schoolchildren will not be able to enjoy the traditional dipping of bread in oil. Some parents are willing to sign a document saying their children can participate in events involving food not prepared by their families but so far no-one has proposed the most logical solution – let this overanxious father keep his child at home while the rest of the children enjoy their traditional events.

Wine sector gets subsidy
malaga Provincial Government has allocated a subsidy of €400,000 to the wine production sector in the Serranía de ronda, because of its tourism potential. The money will be used to furnish the Integral Wine Centre (CIV) due to be opened in ronda in the middle of next year, and also to improve the access roads to the wine producers’ bodegas in the area. Provincial government president elías bendodo said the CIV had been planned with visitors in mind as well as a wine-tasting training centre. mayor maría Paz Fernández said the CIV would boost local tourism and thanked the Junta de andalucia for helping to make it a reality.

Wishes for 2013
I
hope Mariano Rajoy sticks to his guns like the tenacious Gallego he is. He’s been criticised most viciously by the Left for not being around to answer all their silly quibbles in Parliament but he’s been too busy pleading and arguing Spain’s case in Brussels and elsewhere. And the Left can carp on as much as it wants but the figures are beginning to improve – the risk premium is down as are the interest rates on sales of government bonds. This means nothing to the average man or woman in the street who are either looking for work or afraid of losing their jobs but it means the financial markets (read speculators) are picking on some other country and giving Spain a much-needed breather.
R
ight now, it looks as if everybody and his or her mother are out marching in the streets all over Spain but I suspect that the panorama will have changed drastically by this time next year. You can’t lead a country back from the brink of bankruptcy overnight, even though the Socialists and the United Left (IU) are trying to make us believe they could. It was the Socialists who got us into this mess and hopefully the IU will never have the power to compound their mistakes in the future.
A
s for Catalonia, I suspect I’m going to have a lot of fun watching my current bete noir, Artur Mas, trying to find a way out of the impossible political situation he created for himself single-handedly when he decided to go to the polls two years ahead of time. By adopting Catalan independence as his sworn aim, he thought he could divert attention from the fact that his region was bankrupt and the only way to save it was by squeezing more money out of the Madrid government. Using independence to blackmail Madrid, he thought it would also fool more Catalans into voting for him. Fatal misjudgement! He lost 12 seats and the Catalans he failed to fool voted for the Catalan Republic Left (ERC), giving them the seats he lost. Mas is now desperately wooing the ERC

because without its support he may end up calling elections again next year. But ERC is playing hard go get, insisting that Mas set a date for a referendum on Catalan independence, something I suspect he doesn’t really believe in. This slimeball deserves all the future holds for him. Unfortunately it means we’ll have to put up with Catalonia dominating the headlines for the next two years at least. Take my advice, Sr Rajoy, kick them out now and save us all a lot of trouble.
A
s for my old favourite, Zapatero, I hope he follows his party’s command to keep his head down, as he has done so far. The Socialists have enough trouble trying to stay together as a party without any “help” from Zapatero, who led them into their two worst defeats this side of the dictatorship – the regional and local elections in May last year and the general election last November.
Two Sorayas
I
hope the Socialists start thinking of picking up the pieces left behind by the Zapatero debacle. Throwing money at people in the form of baby cheques, help with the rent, etc. can only work in the short term if there’s money in the kitty. In the long term, if the kitty can afford it, it will only lead to the creation of a whole underclass of people dependent on handouts – and if you want to see the results of that just look to the UK.

I
t is a lot easier to tell the bad guys from the good. But this year, because of the times we are living in and the sad circumstances facing the majority of Spaniards, the positive glimmers in our annual best-and-worst list are symbols of society’s pain and suffering. We start with the worst ten.
Spanish private sector.
9.
8. Queen Sofia has publicly been humiliated by her husband’s elephant hunting scandal and son-in-law’s embezzlement case but knows how to keep her head high.
10.
José Mourinho. The stoned face Real Madrid coach called a reporter at the weekend “a piece of shit.” But that is only one example as to why this overly sensitive Portuguese, who believes he walks on water, has made the list.
Tie between Economy Minister Luis de Guindos and Finance Minister Cristóbal Montero. Laurel and Hardy pulling the purse strings.
8.
Cristina Cifuentes. The government’s delegate in Madrid tried to crackdown on the social protests this year, believing that the Spanish capital is actually her garden.
And now for the best ten.
10. Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordilla. You either admired this communist mayor or hate him for being a rebel rouser. But no doubt he has made an international case for the poor workers of Andalusia.
9. Laura Mintegi. The EU Bildu leader in the Basque Country appears to be taking careful steps in looking for a political solution for her restless northern region.
7.
Olvido Hormigos Carpio. This Socialist councillor became a symbol for privacy laws after a sex tape she made for her husband in private was stolen and posted on the internet.
7. Ana Botella. It isn’t the first time she has 6. Iker Casillas who as Madrid’s goalie and made the list, but this time, as the capital’s mayor, she is being “honoured” for her continued bungling of the ongoing investigation into the Madrid Arena party that left five girls dead at the overcrowded Halloween event.

5. Pep Guadiola. No one can complain about the now-legendary Barça coach who left the club this year.
6. Andrea Fabra. The unladylike behaviour of 4. The Spanish Red Cross has done much to Soraya Rodriguez
this PP deputy, who told the country’s unemployed to go “screw themselves” during a session in Congress in July, made her an international media star.
5.
José Ignacio Wert. For an education minister he doesn’t have much tact, but he is enjoying his celebrity spotlight after he vowed to Hispanicize all students in Catalonia.
4.

Soraya Saenz de Santamaria
ocialist leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba may have thought he was being inspired when he chose Soraya Rodriguez as party spokeswoman in charge of taking on deputy PM Soraya Saenz de Santamaria in parliamentary debates. The sooner he gets rid of her the better. Diminutive Soraya Saenz is on the short list for best parliamentary orator of the year while La Rodriguez looks more and more like a woebegone bloodhound every passing day – Soraya Saenz’s sharp tongue would reduce anybody to tears.

Iñaki Urdangarin will continue to drag down the Royal Family as more details of his alleged embezzlement of regional government money come to light in the coming months. He fought viciously with labour leaders over changes to the way companies hire and fire people.
3. Rodrigo Rato. Businessweek named the former Bankia CEO as the top of five worst chairmans of the year.
2. Carlos Dívar. Something is rotten in the judicial system when it takes more than two months to get rid of the president of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) after he was caught for spending public money on private trips. 1. Alberto Casillas. A simple waiter at a downtown Madrid bar became the voice of reason among the chaos caused by a reactionary police force that hunted down protestors during the tense September 15th demonstrations.

thousands of desperate people trying to hold on to their homes. This 53-year-old civil servant and former Socialist councillor was just one of handful of citizens who committed suicide this year because they were facing evictions. Now the CEOE believes that its organisation won’t be affected by the scandal. Díaz Ferrán, who was president 2007-2010, was the voice and image of the nation’s business elite. It is not right to say that his charges will not overshadow his performance at the helm of the CEOE. The case will no doubt raise suspicions about other businessmen who make up the confederation and had strong connections to Díaz Ferrán.

Who you buy from can be just as important as what you buy
So, if you are wishing to sell your property or looking for your next dream home, call Grapevine on 697 233 436 or go online at www.grapevine-properties.es to find out more. In the meantime, here are some comments from their clients: . . .
“Thank you for selling our apartment in Los Olivos, Los Arqueros, in July 2012. Your efficient and friendly service was fantastic throughout the whole process and we felt completely in control even though we were miles away in the UK. Your advice and assistance in coordinating the logistic and legal requirements was invaluable and saved us from hours of strained translation problems and fruitless telephone calls. We felt we could rely on you to handle everything and you did just that including chauffeuring us around on the day of the sale when nothing was much of a problem to you having seen it all before. You certainly cannot beat experience and local knowledge in these processes. Both of you have provided a five star service from the first time we met you in early 2005 and we would not hesitate to recommend you and your company, Grapevine, to anyone. An honest, trustworthy and helpful couple with a great company giving an excellent value for money service. Best wishes to you and your family and thank you for everything that you did for us.” K.W.
“We recently sold our apartment in Las Jacarandas through the services of Grapevine Properties. From the very beginning , Graham and his team were totally dedicated to securing a successful sale. Two words come to mind in describing their approach – Dedication and Honesty. Dedication in finding appropriate clients to view our property, even in a poor recessionary market. They always ensured clients who viewed were those most interested in our type of apartment thus avoiding time wasting. We were also kept informed with progress when the viewings finished thus keeping us in the picture at all times. Honesty in telling the facts about the property/area to both parties at all stages. Graham never tried to falsify what he was selling thus ensuring both the viewers and ourselves received factual information. Grapevine offer a very localised, friendly and trustworthy service. They also provided a continuous a1er sales service to ensure all parties are happy.” D.D “I would like to say that Graham Wood of Grapevine Properties, with whom I have dealt with, is a diligent, conscientious, and efficient real estate agent who carries out his work with a high standard of professionalism. He is courteous and organized. I have no hesitation in entrusting him with the sale of future properties, given his success in the sale of my property in the past.” J.A. “My husband and I bought this summer a wonderful apartment at Los Balcones in Los Arqueros through Grapevine Properties. We had a safe and good expererience at our first foreign buy. We are very pleased and would definitely buy through Grapevine again. We meet Graham several times during our buy. Graham knows the area and can help you choose the right property to suit your needs.” T.M.
“Buying our first property abroad through Grapevine Properties was a seamless and stress-free process from start to finish. With their extensive knowledge of the area and properties available, they were able to match our specific requirements with a list of properties to view. That resulted in us finding our apartment on our very first viewing trip. They then guided us through the whole legal process and helped us with the practicalities of buying a home in Spain and within 10 weeks of choosing our apartment we had the keys!” T.W.
The words honesty and integrity are not generally synonymous with estate agents; Grapevine is an exception. During our lengthy search for a holiday home, Graham spent many hours with us on many viewings giving helpful and professional advice. He was always courteous and informative and a very good timekeeper, something of a rarity in Spain! His knowledge and know-how enabled us to purchase our apartment with confidence and ease and the on-going service that Grapevine offers will ensure our future holidays spent in Los Arqueros will be stress free. Thank you Graham" Hi Jo and Graham, Just to let you know we are settled in the UK now and to thank you for all the hard work you did to sell our villa. We have seen the video of 'A Place In the Sun' and I must say your video of our place was LOADS better. Have a GREAT Christmas and New Year and thank you again for everything. The above are just some of the letters and emails we receive from satisfied clients. Our business is based on honesty, integrity and energy. We listen to what you tell us you want and won’t waste time on taking you to unsuitable properties meaning that you have more time to find your new dream home.

Have you seen this man? Lady & The Tramp TAPAS
British Police in Sussex are concerned for the welfare of Shoreham man Robert Golden aged 58, who has failed to return from a holiday in Spain. Robert flew on his own to Seville on 5th November 2012 with a return flight ticket for the 19th November. He didn't board the return flight and
hasn't been in touch with his brother or his colleagues in London since. Robert, who has a passion for trekking, and the outdoors last used his bank cards on 10th November somewhere in Spain. Detective Inspector Rob Walker said: “We are
getting increasingly concerned for Robert. He was seen by neighbours at the beginning of November leaving his home with a large backpack.” “He is a keen walker and mentioned to a friend about trekking to Granada, Cordoba, Cadiz and Jerez for about 10 to 12 days. However he failed to return to work as expected and he was reported missing on 23rd November. We are in liaison with the British Embassy and are issuing this appeal to the media in Spain.” "I would ask Robert to get in touch to say he is safe and well. I would also urge anyone who may recognise him from this photo or knows him from his travels in Spain to contact Sussex Police on (0044) 1273 475432 – if possible quoting serial number 804 of 23/11." Written by Pete Woodall of Woody’s Los Boliches
Twelfth of the twelfth There are many reasons to think 12 is a lucky number and maybe it is? It was certainly important pre-metrically speaking. Many will remember that a gross is 12 dozen and one dozen is a quantity of twelve. There are 12 months in a year and there are 12 hours on the face of a clock. There are 12 inches in a foot, 12 pennies in a shilling and there are 12 signs in the Zodiac. In the Bible, Jacob had 12 sons and Jesus had 12 disciples (don't forget it's his birthday next week). Moses led the Twelve Tribes out of Egypt and gave them the 12 commandments – no just joking, that was only ten! 12 men have walked on the moon and there are 12 stars on the Flag of Europe. Of course you could find any number of reasons, well easily twelve, to show why any other number is equally so important. But what's
the chance of getting this time on your parking ticket? Jeff King from Torreblanca in Fuengirola unsuspectingly dropped his € 1, 20 (another 12) in the parking meter at 10.54 last Wednesday and came up with this unexpected expiry time of 12 minutes past 12 on the 12th day of the 12th month in the 12th year
12/12/12, 12:12. Convinced it is a lucky omen for his year ahead, which is 2013 and therefore could be unlucky for some, he is quite chuffed with his special ticket and intends to keep it - although he is open to any ridiculously
large cash offers. As for the rest of us, our good luck for 2013 will have to come from “Las doce Uvas”, the 12 grapes eaten just before midnight on the 31st. December. The next time a similar combination comes up is 2101, in just over 88 years, at one minute past one on the first of January. 01/01/01, 01:01 and parking meters will
probably be long gone but hopefully your great grand children will have just finished eating their lucky grapes. Feliz Navidad y Prospero Año Nuevo. Written by Pete Woodall, Woody’s Los Boliches
Christmas cheer arrived early for these two abandoned dogs, when kind hearted staff at La Risa restaurant and bar on Lauro Golf Course, Alhaurin de la Torre, put food out for the pair. Lady (left in the picture) and her best friend Tramp, had been wandering around the golf course area for several weeks. Staff spoke to a volunteer for SOS Animal Refuge who is a member of the Triple S Social Club, which meets at La Risa. Lady and Tramp, each aged about 2, are now safe at the refuge, and lucky Tramp may soon be heading for a new
home in Sweden. Lady, who is small, charming and loveable, now needs a cosy home of her own so if anyone can help please telephone 653 275 875. In the meantime, Jan and Lisa at the bar, with the help of their customers, have raised 235 euros which they have donated to SOS. Charity co-founder Tony Byford said: “This very kind gesture goes a long way towards the costs of neutering, vaccinations, microchipping and passporting Lady and Tramp, so we are very grateful to all at La Risa who have kindly contributed.”
Customers at Dunnes Store, Fuengirola (Miramar), were given a Christmas treat last Friday and Saturday afternoons when some of the 40-strong T.A.P.A.S. Choir performed a selection of Christmas songs and carols live inside the store. This was well received, putting a smile on customers’ faces with many stopping to listen and photograph or film the choir. Store Manager Rodrigo Garcia was so impressed he has already asked the choir to return next year. The choir managed to fit these performances into their busy weekend schedule along with a performance in support of Cudeca at their Light a Light evening on Friday, and dashing off on Saturday to sing with two other choirs (Spanish and German) at the Lux Mundi Carol service in Torre del Mar.
DAVID THE DOGMAN A Dog's Purpose?
Here is something each and every one of us can learn from!
A story for dog lovers – well maybe all of us ! ... Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa , and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to
observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker 's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ''I know why.'' Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of
his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.
He said,''People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life – like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'' The six-year-old continued,“Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'' I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The telly over Christmas - BBC letter We have received this letter from the BBC courtesy of a reader in Fuengirola. Although a little bit technical in parts, the final lines explain what is in store for viewers who currently view BBC domestic television. The general wisdom seems to be wait and see.
Changes to BBC satellite transponders in 2013. Wednesday 12th December 2012, from Alix Pryde, Director, BBC Distribution I’m conscious that there is currently some speculation about the timing of forthcoming moves of BBC services between satellites and the reason for these changes. So I thought you would appreciate it if I set the record straight. The quick answer is that, as a result of SES’s fleet replacement programme, BBC services will move in the second half of 2013. Regular readers will recall that in February 2012, SES retired Astra 2D and BBC services moved to a new temporary home on
Astra 1N. Astra 1N is due to take up its permanent position in 2013 (19°East), so the BBC’s services will move to their new permanent home on Astra 2E (28.2°East) when that becomes operational. SES expects Astra 2E to launch in Q2 (second Quarter) 2013, so we currently expect to transition BBC services to it during summer 2013. Some of you have also noticed that we commissioned a new transponder (which we call DSat8) in the autumn. It moved from its temporary home on Astra 1N to its permanent position on Astra 2F at the end of November 2012. DSat8 is still in a testing phase but in the coming months it will be used to broadcast BBC One Scotland HD and BBC One Wales HD as we complete the programme of providing all nation’s programming in glorious HD. We’ll be publishing the details of DSat8 on our satellite reception advice page when the services launch. I hope that clarifies the timings of moves and also

that the moves relate to the SES fleet replacement programme, rather than any BBC strategy to change its footprint. That said, the new transponders do have a slightly different footprint, so I’ll explain a bit about that, and why the changes are no cause for concern for the BBC in our requirement to ensure that the BBC’s domestic services are readily accessible to people living in the UK.

What impact will all this have for the viewer?
In all likelihood the move of BBC services from 1N to their new permanent homes will have no impact on UK households. Astra 2E and 2F have the same, tighter but slightly more powerful UK spot beams which means that UK households should get a slightly stronger signal. So if you happened to be on the edge of coverage, you will hopefully get more

reliable reception. The overspill of the BBC’s services will be reduced so viewers outside the UK will find it even harder to receive them. I know that this causes unhappiness to some of you living outside the UK. However, it is entirely appropriate because the BBC domestic services are for people living in the UK only. For viewers outside the UK, BBC Worldwide offers a number of channels
which are available in various territories. These include BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies along with BBC World News throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
I hope the detail above helps you to understand a bit more about the changes coming in the second half of 2013 and the reason for them.

Do your last minute shopping at the various charity shops At this time of year all the charities are struggling to make ends meet. All of us will have spent any spare cash – if we have any that is – or maxed out on the credit cards getting the “dream present” for friends and families and this means that there is nothing left over for the charities’ coffers.
But there is a way round it. Why not visit shops like Cudeca, Age Care, The Lions, Animals in Distress in Alhaurin el Grande and C.H.A.I.N. in Coin plus the Butterfly Children’s Charity shop in Marbella to have a look and see if you can find that special bargain lurking in them.
I often find designer clothes and all manner of goodies for a mere fraction of the price I would pay in other places, plus I am also then helping indirectly whoever the charity is working for.
So, local communities and animals can benefit and you can save simply oodles of money! Maybe they won’t have what you’re looking for but, trust me, they’re always worth having a browse round.
Another source of excellent bargains is the dress exchange shops. The Wardrobe in Alhaurin el Grande is great for party as well as day wear and accessories, and there’s Le Tronc on the same road as the Fuengirola market and Jane in The Irish Card and Party Store near the Fuengirola post office has some very select outfits that are just right for this time of year and beyond. So, if you still have people to buy for and think you would like to do some good at the same time, pop along to these wonderful Aladdin’s caves and see what you can find.

Les Mi s er abLes Directed by Tom Hooper Starring: Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe
You will see it here first, when Les Miserables opens in Spain on Christmas Day, a couple of weeks before British audiences will get the chance to find out what all the fuss is about. And fuss there has been. It’s been 27 years since the stage show opened in London and moved on to sweep its way around the world, so the movie version of the musical has been a long time coming. And according to the universal view of the critics it’s been worth the wait. It’s a hugely ambitious British movie
which is now being touted as the best British film of all time. Oscar winning director Hooper (The King’s Speech) has introduced a revolution into musical film making – he does not pre-record the actors and then film them miming … they are recorded singing ‘for real’ on set. Hugh Jackman plays prisoner Jean Valjean, consumed with hatred after spending 20 years in jail for a minor offence, and after breaking his parole he is relentlessly pursued by the determined policeman
Javert (Crowe). The epic story takes us to the very barricades as the French fight for freedom against their repressive government. Anne Hathaway plays Fantine, who falls into prostitution and on hard times.
The Susan Boyle version of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ set the world alight …. Hathaway’s version is equally spinetingling and astonishingly moving. With a slew of top actors including Eddie Redmayne, Helena Bonham Carter and Amanda Seyfried – all on top form – and with a
memorable and moving songbook, Les Mis is destined to sweep the board at the upcoming movie awards. And Jackman is being firmly backed as a shoe-in for the best actor Oscar. It’s a must-see and don’t forget to take the tissues.

You have a great ability to take charge and be in control, you have the gift to tackle and accomplish your goals, sturdy and strong for the climb, determined as ever. At the moment you are working hard to ensure that you don´t repeat certain mistakes that have happened in the past. There is a need to be careful, exact and precise in all that you do and that means checking and re-checking facts and figures. Getting things done right now is what will spare you from having to re-do things later on when you are ultra busy. A certain sort of meandering is over and if there ever was a time to send a message, write a book, express what you have dared never to do, the time would be now. Your career is about to open up and empower you strongly forward. A person with the resources and status to help you just may appear out of nowhere and give you a chance to pitch your wild vision. There is a big difference now compared to the past as then you had limited choices, but this time you are moving in one direction. Travel could be on the cards.
It has been a long road and a long year but the outlook is looking good for embracing a new vista. Whatever you have been up against and unable to get past is about to dissolve. This year has required a considerable amount of staying power and it has taken a great deal of emotional energy but you have risen to the occasion and now you will begin to see the real benefits of not backing down. The everyday worries are leaving you so you can focus on more important tasks and challenges.
Use up those leftover Christmas dinner veggies and make these bubble and squeak cakes, just perfect to go with turkey or ham, smothered with some gravy.
Bubble & squeak cakes Ingredients:
1kg floury potatoes , quartered King Edward or Maris Piper • 40g butter • 500g Brussels sprouts , trimmed • 50g plain flour , seasoned with salt and pepper • olive oil , for frying
( Serves 8 )
•
Directions
Prep 20 mins Cook time 10 mins
1. Boil the potatoes for 12-15 mins or until tender, then drain and return to the pan over a low heat for 1-2 mins to dry out. Add the butter and mash well. Meanwhile, boil the sprouts for 3-5 mins until just tender. Drain and cool quickly under cold running water. Shake dry, then shred as finely as you can. 2. Mix the sprouts with the potatoes and season to taste. Leave until cool enough to handle, then shape into 8 round cakes. Tip the flour onto a plate, then coat the cakes, tapping off the excess. 3. Heat a 5mm depth of oil in a large frying
pan and shallow-fry the cakes in two batches for 2 mins each side, turning carefully. Drain on kitchen paper and transfer to a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper. Cool, cover and chill or freeze. Will keep in the fridge for up to three days or freeze for up to a month. 4. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5 (or if you've roasted the ham, leave the oven on while it rests) and reheat the cakes for 15 mins until hot through and crisp on the outside.

LESSON
August 23rd September 22nd
This is the time to break free into new and better territory, something that has bound you or you have allowed to bind you has lifted and you are set free. Anything is possible because of this new found feeling. Your mind is on fire full of spontaneity, ideas and inspirations, in fact, sudden breakthroughs across the board are possible and where you thought you had burnt your bridges you now have the opportunity to build them again.
...you don’t have to be a chef!
Christmas in Spain has changed dramatically over the last few years. I suppose it is mainly the influence of American films and, to a lesser extent, the influx of foreigners moving here.
Up until recently, the main Christmas decoration for most Spanish families was the Belén. Belén means Bethlehem. It is a common girls' name but at this time of year refers to the nativity scene set up in most Spanish living rooms. These are often incredibly ornate and can include a cast of dozens – including, of course, Mary, Joseph, assorted shepherds and the three wise men. Baby Jesus is supposed to make his appearance on Nochebuena – Christmas Eve – after everyone has come back from the Misa del Gallo, the special name given to midnight mass. Misa del Gallo means the rooster's mass – so called because the rooster was supposedly the first to announce of the birth of Jesus. Also found in the Belén is a figure crouching with his pants down. This is the "cagón" – (the person having a poo) who is traditional in most Beléns and gives rise to much merriment for the children. He is supposed to represent fertility for the land.
Traditional foods include bacalao – cod and besugo – sea bream. Pavo (turkey) and pato (duck) are also gaining in popularity. A sopa de mariscos (shell fish soup) is another popular dish. For those with a sweet tooth there are polvorones – a sort of biscuit made of lard – marzipan figures, and the ever-popular turrón. Turrón is typically made of almonds and now there are many different types. The turrón duro (hard nougat type sweet) is perhaps best left for those with extremely strong teeth. Turrón blando is a softer variety. And don't forget that other important tradition of Christmas in Spain, the Christmas lottery – El Gordo (the fat one) This is drawn on 22nd December and there are thousands of prizes of different amounts. So, go out and buy your décimo now and mucha suerte – lots of luck!

Your teeth, your general health, your quality of life
In our previous article we discussed periodontitis, now we are going to discuss the conditions which can affect it. Unfortunately once the bone has been lost it is not possible to reverse the disease but it is possible to control its progress.
Smoking does enhance the progress of periodontitis and diseases such as diabetes can also have an effect on healing and the progress of the disease.
Is periodontitis treatable ?
Periodontitis is caused generally by bacteria caused by poor oral hygiene and research has proved that it can be of genetic origin. However, the treatment is the same. 1. Mechanical 2. Chemical, antibiotics 3. Surgical 4- A combination of all of the above
Mechanical removal of plaque is the most common way of treating the disease combined with using a type of mouthwash to reduce the amount of bacteria. Depending on the severity of the disease this

should be repeated and reevaluated.
If this method doesn't help the control of the disease's progress a surgical procedure may be used to reduce the pocket depth in order to help the patient maintain his/her oral hygiene. In some cases removal of teeth is the best treatment option to control the disease.
A word of advice
If you have been told by your dentist that you have periodontal disease, make sure that you see your hygienist or dentist on a regular basis as periodontitis is generally symptom free until it is well progressed – so don't ignore the warning signs if you do get any.
Let me just add that the articles that we write here are very simple and solely for information. They are mainly intended for the general public to have a better understanding of their mouths.

After a nasty bout of morning sickness the Duchess returns to public life
Kate wows in a green McQueen dress
… but could only stay for 45 minutes before heading home to rest Kate made a stunning return to public life when she presented awards at the Sports Personality Of The Year ceremony on Sunday night to Stephen Coe with a lifetime achievements award and the main award of the night going to Bradley Wiggins for his cycling prowess at both the Tour de France and the London Olympics this year, plus a gong to heptathlete gold medalist Jess Ennis.
In a green Alexander McQueen full length gown with sleeves split to reveal her arms, teamed with a simple gold pendant necklace, she took to the stage next to the likes of David Beckham and A Question Of Sport’s Sue Barker. Her hair was immaculate and she looked the picture of health. The fitted dress, which featured structured
pockets and a V-neckline, hugged the royal's toned figure – but revealed no sign of a baby bump just yet.
Kate was hospitalised recently after battling hyperemesis gravidarum – a rare form of morning sickness.
Kate's decision to honour the engagement after being forced to cancel a whole host of public appearances is a
sure sign the 30-year-old is on the road to recovery.
According to reports, Kate was only allowed to stay at the event for 45 minutes, before returning home to continue her recovery.
After her performance on Monday night it is hoped that she is over the worst of her morning sickness worries.
Not before bedtime for chefs OK, so we all know that pre-slim Nigella Lawson would eat great chunks of wonderful gooey, chocolatey food and was the heroine to a lot of us ladies for not being afraid to eat. Jamie, on the other hand was hailed as the chef to bring you good, nutricious food, even though a lot of his recipes took ages to put together (30 or 15 minutes really is pushing it for the most part!). Now, however, you may not be able to watch your favourite chefs before the 9pm (UK time – and that’s 10PM our time) watershed as studies are reported to have shown that their recipes aren’t that nutricious after all. It found that meals randomly selected from
their books contained "significantly more" fat and saturated fat and less fibre per portion than supermarket ready meals. Neither the ready meals nor the recipes complied with all of the nutritional recommendations from the World Health Organisation (WHO). The research was carried out by a team from NHS Tees and Newcastle University, which based it on the top five TV chef recipe books on amazon.com in December 2010. These were 30 Minute Meals and Ministry Of Food by Jamie Oliver, Baking Made Easy by Lorraine Pascale, Nigella Lawson's Kitchen and River Cottage Everyday by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. They compared the
nutritional content of 100 recipes randomly selected from the books to 100 ownbrand ready meals from Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's. The study, published in the Christmas edition of the British Medical Journal on bmj.com, found that no recipe or ready meal met all of the WHO nutrient intake goals for preventing diet-related diseases. The TV chefs' recipes were also more likely to achieve red traffic light labels than the ready meals. "Meals based on television chef recipes were less healthy than ready meals," the authors wrote. The authors suggest that TV chefs who create unhealthy meals should be subjected to a 9pm watershed.
They also state that recipe books should contain more nutritional guidance, such as that portrayed on the front of many food products. Still, don’t forget that a lot of recipes are only for guidance according to our Kym’s Kitchen cook. She says that the amount of salt that the chefs add to their recipes on the TV can be usually be significantly reduced and you should learn to experiment with different ways of preparing and cooking food as you go along. Food and the cooking of it should be fun, healthy and something to learn to love. It shouldn’t end up being a chore and she will continue to collect recipe books despite what the authorities say. If we all kept to strict guidance
rules from these people we wouldn’t ever experiment with recipes and that would take the fun out of cooking.

Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly present the eagerly anticipated final, the climax of a series that has seen slips, trips, a flying bicycle and even dancing on the judges' table. There has also been plenty of bickering between the fearsome foursome, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Darcey Bussell.

CHANGES ARE COMING! BUT DON’T WORRY! EUROSAT ARE ON HAND TO OFFER THEIR EXPERTISE ON TV and SATELLITE
We can now offer an alternative solution without additional dishes, but the "end-user" will need ADSL internet. The cost of the system installed is 350€ If you look at the UK TV channel list below you can see which channels will be available. We will need some information from you before we can install the system, As you can imagine, our telephones are very, very busy! and stocks of the internet boxes are limited. We are now taking installation orders. There is another option we were looking into which requires a 2nd satellite dish aligned to an alternative satellite with another satellite receiver for just BBC 1 & ITV 1, BUT the encoding system which this receiver uses is due to change at the end of January and it may be that this solution will no longer work as from February ! So, to sum up there will only be viewing of UK channels via the internet !!!
THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE CHANNELS WHICH YOU CAN VIEW WITH OUR SYSTEM AND NO SATELLITE DISH IS REQUIRED

Opinion
Baroness von Voss by email
I thought your readers would be interested to receive a copy of the Baroness's letter to Tony Hall, Director General of the BBC regarding the switch off of TV transmissions. Dear Mr Hall I am amazed to find that some changes to the satellite system are going to deprive hundreds of thousands of loyal British citizens the ability to see BBC television where they have been previously able to do so. I am included in this unfortunate group. I realise that there are licencing and broadcasting rights which have a bearing on this but all of my friends and contacts have been willing to pay a fee through a system such as a viewing card. There are calculations that show six to seven per
cent of the TV audience are outside of the UK but within the current satellite beam. Are these people to be ignored? I had to move to southern Spain due to ill health but was consoled by being able to see South Today and other BBC programmes. Even if this is unavoidable, whose cruel idea was it to do it just before Christmas? In view of the time frame I look forward to urgent action and a reply very soon. Sincerely Baroness von Voss

February and some even later. The satellite companies are trying to find a solution to the problem and we shall, of course, be letting everyone know the latest news as we get it. Personally, I’d be quite happy to pay the BBC’s licence fee from here if it means I can still get programmes like Last Tango in Halifax that – at least according to the rumours – I’ll be able to see that final episode of. If it does all go pear shaped and we lose all our TV (and we live in an area that can’t get the internet so we won’t even be able to receive it that way) I’m not sure what we’ll all do but probably we’ll all be going out more and socialising with each other. Either that or there’ll be a lot more books and DVD’s sold!

Secondly last week, through Pete at Woody's, you printed a letter of mine under the heading " J Brian Morgan – Torreblanca" – it was in conection with the Royal Air Force Changi, (Singapore) Association and two people have already contacted me and one gentleman from

The End of the World!
According to hundreds of Internet sites and thousands of misinformed citizens, the world will come to an end this week!
T
he story goes that the Mayan calendar predicts an alignment of the earth, the planets of our solar system, and the centre of the Milky Way. This alignment will cause all sorts of catastrophes, from a sudden change in the direction of the Earth’s rotation to the collision and destruction of our world by a rogue planet called Nibiru. And it’s all supposed to happen on Friday, December 21, 2012. Presumably on Mayan standard time. et’s start with some facts. The Maya were keen astronomers and timekeepers, and there is a major event coming up this week in the ancient Mayan calendar. Scholars have studied the calendar and determined their year “zero” dates to August 11, 3114 BC on our calendar. The Mayans count their days forward from this date in various units, one of which is a “baktun”, or a long cycle of 144,000 days (roughly 394 years). As it happens, scholars have dated the end of the 13th baktun to December 21, 2012. To the Maya, a new baktun was somewhat like a new millennium for us. Something noteworthy to be sure, but nothing of galactic significance. lso, the Mayans themselves made no prediction of the end of the world at the end of the 13th baktun. Indeed, they have a unit of time called a pictun, which consists of 20 baktuns, so they clearly expected their calendar to march on. he current fascination and confusion surrounding December 21, 2012 comes from a series of books in the 1970′s and 1980′s. Author John Major Jenkins packaged these mystical speculations into his book Maya Cosmogenesis 2012, which among other things stated the winter solstice will eclipse the centre of the galaxy on December 21, 2012 and the Sun will align with the galactic equator. Idiots such as David Icke and co. have fuelled the stories and made a fortune out of preaching this nonsense. There was even a Hollywood blockbuster movie about it. ome believe these alignments, along with the alignment of the planets of our solar system, will cause the dawn of a new age of hope and positive transformation for humanity. Others viewed this so-called alignment as a sign of the apocalypse and the cause of earthquakes, blackouts, and all manner of mayhem and destruction. ut it turns out there are no significant planetary alignments on December 21, 2012. The image above shows the position of the planets on this date. As you can see, there’s nothing

special going on here. The only thing of any interest is the winter solstice or shortest day of the year which occurs on December 21st. es, the winter solstice lies close to the direction of the centre of the galaxy in the constellation Sagittarius. But the two never overlap. The two points will make a close approach, but not for another 200 years. And the solar system will in no way align with the galactic equator, which itself is a somewhat arbitrary plane in the night sky. ut how about the dreaded planet Nibiru, which is supposed to emerge from beyond Pluto to crash into the Earth on December 21st? This was first predicted by the hoax-mongers to happen in 2003. But when Nibiru didn’t appear, they moved the date to coincide with the “end” of the Mayan calendar. David Icke has conveniently changed the date again to January 13th 2013. f course Nibiru does not exist. If a rogue planet was going to collide with Earth on December 21st, it would be visible in the sky today, shining bright and large and easily visible even in daytime. But there’s nothing unusual in the sky right now. And as it careened through the solar system, Nibiru’s gravity would have long ago tugged on Mars and Jupiter and set them slightly off their predicted orbit. Astronomers have seen no such effect. o you see, everyone is entitled to their own opinion but not their own facts. There are no alignments, no rogue planets, and no prediction by the Maya or by professional scientists that the world will end on December 21st, 2012. So finish your Christmas shopping (or start it if you’re one of the believers!), and continue your plans for a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Chilton makes it four Brits in F1
Max Chilton has become Formula 1's fourth British driver after signing to drive for Marussia next season. The move was revealed by BBC Formula 1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan on Monday. Chilton, 21, impressed bosses with his speed and ability to set up the car. Meanwhile Japanese former Sauber driver Kamui Kobayashi has given up on finding a Formula 1 seat for next season. The 26-yearold had raised around £6.5m, partly in donations from fans, to fund a drive.

SOL Classic Car Club held their Christmas run last weekend – a run with a difference, though sadly rather a wet one. Members drove to the celebrated Smurf Village, the pueblo azul of Juzcar – the location for the Smurf film – which opted to stay blue and enjoy the tourist boom which followed (apparently tourism went up from 250 a year to some 80,000 visitors at its peak). Sporting trademark Smurf headgear they drove through low clouds which unfortunately obscured the stunning views and hid the famous blue houses as they approached the village. They were met by the mayor and a welcoming committee, with rather a
lot of umbrellas. SOL member Nick Wadham Sutton donned a Santa Smurf costume and was driven to the local school where he gave out bags of sweets to the children. After sampling cheese, cold meats and locally made wine the rather damp classic Smurfs went

on to lunch, deciding to hold the same run again next year in better weather. Visit the website for more details of this run and information about the – go to club www.solclassiccarclub.net.
Big Week of Christmas Celebrations for Mijas Bowls Club Christmas at Mijas Bowls started mid-week with a formal party at the Valparaiso and continued with a week-end fun bowling party back at the club house. Members and guests first attended a glamorous night out at the Valparaiso Restaurant where they received the usual star treatment with a fabulous meal and entertainment. Everyone enjoyed an evening of festive food, drink and dancing until the early hours. After only a couple

Wiggins the winner Bradley Wiggins has admitted that he thought Mo Farrah was going to win 2012 BBC Sports Personality of the Year after his name wasn’t in the first two called out. Farrah eventually filled the number four spot. Wiggins called it possibly his greatest triumph after he secured the BBC award from runner-up Jessica Ennis and Andy Murray in third after a public vote. The 32-year-old cyclist claimed Olympic time trial gold in the summer after becoming the first Briton ever to win the Tour de France. "To be ahead of Jess and Andy, it's probably my greatest sporting achievement," he said. "The other stuff you can control, you can't control people voting for you" Wiggins went on to add he had been a fan of the Sports Personality show since he was a child. "Sports Personality is a bit of an institution in our house and always has been. To win this it's very difficult to put into words," he said after receiving the award from the Duchess of Cambridge. "It's incredible, and I'm very proud. It's something

of days rest the tenacious club members continued with a bowling party back at the club house. The day started with various fun bowling games organised by Brian Lancaster and after the Christmas Draw and a sumptuous buffet provided by the members finished with a Christmas sing along of popular Christmas songs. The Social Secretary Carol Wright who organised both events said “I didn’t realise our members had so much energy!” Mijas Bowls club is situated just off the Mijas road in Fuengirola and anyone wanting information regarding the club’s activities should contact Ann Fenton (Secretary) on 952 466 038 email:

I certainly wanted to win." He also showed what a lot of people thought he didn’t possess, a personality. Having the crowd in stitches when being interviewed by ‘Susan’ Barker as he insisted on calling her, and in his acceptance speech saying the BBC had laid on a free bar, again warmed him to the crowd. At the after-show party, Wiggins joined the house band on stage as he played guitar to songs by
The Jam and Oasis. Latest reports say that Wiggins will be knighted as will four-time Olympic sailing champion Ben Ainslie and Paralympic athletics superstar David Weir. Meanwhile, cyclist Sarah Storey, who like Weir bagged four golds at the Paralympics, is set to be made a Dame. The list will be published on December 29 and other people involved with the Olympics are also likely to be honoured.
I was asked this week by a novice player, who has a very limited bank roll of 30€ and wanting to play for real money on one of the leading on-line sites, whether he should play cash or tournaments. The answer is simple – play both. With a small bank roll he must play the micro limit cash/ring games of 1c/2c, also play the double your money sit and go tournaments say at the 1€ buy in. He needs to play both because different players have different strengths which can make you a better cash or tournament player, Phil Hellmuth has won many WSOP bracelets, all at Holdem may I add, probably one of the best tournament players ever. As a cash player he has not really been up there with the likes of Doyle Brunson who may I add is
also a great tournament player with many WSOP bracelets to his name at various formats. With cash you need to be aggressive from the start. If you have the odds to make a call or feel you’re ahead you call, if you’re beat re-buy and carry on with the game. However in a tournament (unless a re-buy format) one mistake and you’re out! I would have to think hard about laying down AK to a four bet in a cash game but in tournament play in the early and midlevels this would not be a hard fold – for the simple reason it is better to wait for a better spot and hoping one of the two aggressive players busts out laddering you up the leader board to a prize spot. So my advice is play the small sit and go

tournaments to test your tight aggressive game and the micro cash games for your less aggressive style. However, always remember it's selective aggressive play and good hand selection that wins long term.

he had a nightmare of a round and I know what that’s like. The dummy was presented to Charles Randell for reaching the 17th green in three shots only to five putt and apparently he threw all his toys out of the pram. Terry’s par three competition was shared by Joe King and Ian Brewer with 10 points. Nearest the pin on hole 3 was Brian Millwood, hole 9 Ian Holden and hole 16 Ian Holden. We all, as always travelled to Lainey’s Bistro for a little alcohol intake, Dave Haworth and myself having more than the rest. Our thanks go to Elaine and the staff for supplying the nibbles and for putting up with us. Well that was another year gone and as always all the members would like to thank Andy Macfarlane our Secretary, Dave Haworth our Treasurer and Terry Birtles our Captain for all the hard work given in making 2012 a successful season. The following evening we made the short trip to Miralmonte Restaurant, Coin for our end of year dinner and dance, incorporating the presentation of the final trophies for 2012.
All the members would like to thank Brian SinclairMorrison for supplying the entertainment and our thanks go to Jose Garcia and his wife Rita Vitto, his daughter Monica and all the staff for supplying a superb meal and making the evening a great success. Well done Charles. The winners of the par three competition were, in third place Dave Williams and in joint first position were Nick Carwood and Charles Randell. Well that’s it for the year and we all look forward to the 2013 season and installing our new proposed Captain Joe King into the position. Too much snow for Skiing
The women's World Cup Super-G scheduled to take place at Val d'Isere on Saturday was called off due to heavy snowfall. With snow falling overnight and storms continuing into Saturday morning, organisers deemed it impossible to hold the race. Meanwhile Lindsey Vonn has been forced to take a break from the current World Cup season as the American struggles to get over the effects of an intestinal illness. She had been in hospital for two nights last month.
Malaga stay fourth after more derby delight Sevilla 0 - 2 Malaga

balotelli takes Man City to court
Cook says victory equal to Ashes England captain Alastair Cook rated his side’s historic 2-1 Test series win in India every bit as special as their 2010-11 Ashes success in Australia. Cook led his team to a victory in his first tour as permanent Test captain – which many thought was beyond them. After a ninewicket defeat in the first Test at Ahmedabad, many were predicting a 4-0 defeat. However, Cook’s team fought back with successive victories in Mumbai and

the break The Inginero (Pelligrini) made a change. Demichelis moved into midfield with Sanchez bought into the defence for Malaga. This broke up all Sevilla's midfield as Malaga grew into the game. And just four minutes into the second half a Joaquin corner was met by Demechilis at the far post to loop a header into the net. Sevilla's misery was compounded on 69 minutes. Joaquin was put through on goal where Fazio brought him down in the box to be sent off for a professional foul. The resulting penalty was taken by Eliseu who sent the keeper the wrong way. A great three points with Real Madrid coming in the league next Saturday at 8pm.

Kolkata. On Monday, thanks to centurions Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell, they finished the job with a series-clinching draw at Nagpur. Man of the series Cook led from the front with a defiant 176 in that initial defeat and then a century in each of the next two Tests. But it was after watching Trott and Bell combine so relentlessly to keep India at bay for more than 150 overs in England’s second-innings 352 for four declared on Monday that Cook naturally felt the greatest sense of satisfaction. “I think it’s on a par with the Ashes,” he said, having scored 562 runs in this series and 766 in that rubber Down Under. Success in Australia came after a wait of almost a quarter of a century. Success in India was the first since 1984-85. “As an Englishman, winning in Australia after so long meant a huge amount,” Cook added. “But in that dressing room there for that last half an hour, knowing what we had achieved, it was a very special place and it will live long in my memory.”

Striker Mario Balotelli will face Manchester City at a Premier League tribunal in London on Wednesday. Balotelli is fighting City's decision to fine him two weeks' wages for his poor disciplinary record last season. The 22-year-old Italian missed 11 games domestically and in Europe last season because of suspensions. Balotelli appealed against the decision but an independent panel of City's board upheld the penalty. The case will now be heard by a three-man panel. City began the disciplinary process after Balotelli was sent off against Arsenal in April 2012. In all, he received nine yellow cards and three reds – one of them retrospective – during the season.

We don't want black or gay players! Zenit fans’ shocking demand
A group of fans of Russian side Zenit St Petersburg are calling for non-white and gay players to be excluded from their team. This is another sign of the racism which is plaguing the country that will host the World Cup in 2018. Landscrona, the largest Zenit supporters' club, released a manifesto on Monday demanding the club field an allwhite, heterosexual team. It added that 'dark-skinned players are all but forced down Zenit's throat now, which only brings out a negative reaction' and said gay players were 'unworthy of our great city.'
