Flat-rate pension will be simpler
The UK government announced a new flat-rate state pension on Monday that will start in April 2017.
The weekly payment will be £144, plus inflation rises between now and 2017, up from the current full state pension which is £107.45 a week.
However, people will have to work longer, contributing 35 years of National Insurance (NI) instead of the current 30. Anyone who has not paid NI for at least 10 years will not qualify for the enhanced state pension at all.
Pensions minister Steve Webb said the new system would be much simpler: "At the moment,

nobody has a clue what the state is going to pay them. We have a basic pension, a second state pension, a pension credit – it's fiendishly complicated. So we are proposing a simple system, not a more expensive one, which will help people plan for their retirements.” He added: “And women coming up to pension age who have got a damaged pension record, because they brought up children, will have that restored."

A “new” car This week has been a better week! Fairly recently I swopped my Hyundai lantra for a Citroen C5 diesel. The cars are the same age but the C5 is an upgrade because it has a higher spec. I’m not really a petrol head and, as long as the car will get me from A to B and is paid for, I’m not that fussed. The Hyundai was a great car but had really been hammered a bit what with work and everything so “Joey” as I called it had to go to a new home (I’ve seen it since and the guy keeps it clean and loves it, so that’s OK!). The C5, despite being very comfy

however had no ‘poke’. It’d drop from 90 to 50 going uphill and wouldn’t kick down despite my having my foot on the floor, and I can just imagine what I would have been saying to have been stuck behind some ‘idiot’ who didn’t know how to drive properly! Also, it was downright dangerous coming out of the urbanisations on to the n340 with no ‘poke’ under the bonnet. So, last week I took it to uwe at Autosalon Coin and after a day in there I’m sure he sold the one I took in and gave me a whole new car! ‘The Tank’ as this one’s called now pulls perfectly uphill and I can get out on to the road with safety. It is honestly like a new car. When I was 17 my uncle told me never to drive with my foot on the floor, as you might need that extra bit of power to get out of a situation and now I can drive how I would normally and feel safe so, thanks uwe for my “new” car and my safety.
Flat-rate state pension will be simpler A universal flat-rate payment in England, Wales and Scotland is the biggest overhaul of the pension system for decades, and involves merging the state second pension with the basic state pension, to create one flat-rate payment.
It will only be paid to new pensioners reaching state pension age from April 6th, 2017 and, for them, do away with the need for the pension credit system. The self-employed will be better off because at the moment they are not earning any state second pension, and in the long run they will get the whole £144. The benefit of a higher state pension will be partly offset by the requirement to make contributions for longer through NI, in order to get the full amount. The government will also

explain exactly how the state second pension, which acts as a top-up to the basic state pension, will be removed.
Currently, some prospective state pensioners will accrue a higher level of state pension than £144 a week, via a combination of their basic and state second pensions. As the government has promised that all their accrued pension rights will be recognised, the new system may have to involve some future pensioners being paid a top-up to the new, merged, flat-rate payment.
The change will bring an end to this system of "contracting out", with two consequences.
The government will have to decide if these people should receive the full flat-rate pension, if they first qualify for it after April 2017, despite the fact that they will not have been making full NI contributions for the state second pension in the preceding years. The government must also decide if these people should start paying higher

NI contributions, after that date, while still in work.
Under established plans, the state pension age is rising in any case to 66 for both men and women by 2020, with further plans for this to increase to 67 between 2026 and 2028.
The state pension is expected to continue rising, as now, in line with earnings, prices, or 2.5%, whichever is higher.

Emergency services eliminated Premier María Dolores de Cospedal of the Partido Popular (PP) said the closure of 21 Continuous Attention Points (PACs) around the region was due to the “low number” of patients using the night centres, which was not enough to justify the cost of their upkeep. The Socialist Party has said the closures affect 120,000 people in both the municipalities affected and neighbouring towns and local residents have participated in several acts to protest the measure. The inhabitants of Tembleque, Toledo province, locked themselves inside the
town’s health centre and had to be removed by the Guardia Civil. Regional health chief José Ignacio Echániz said those affected by the closures still have emergency treatment guaranteed in the form of ambulance and helicopter services.
However, health professionals have said the measure will put people in serious danger. According to the Castilla-La Mancha Nursing Union (SATSE), the decision is “unacceptable because it solely arises out of economic criteria,” and will lead to a “rise in the probability of mortality in the affected population”.

PM ’s absence at Alibi of king’s sonsoldier’s funeral in-law crumbles Court papers have revealed that one of Iñaki Urdangarin’s business partners told investigators that someone connected to the king's son-in-law had tried to convince him to tell the judge that he had received a sum of money for services provided to the Aguas de Valencia company.
While Crown Prince Felipe presided over the funeral of Sgt David Fernández Ureña, who was killed on Friday in Afghanistan while trying to deactivate an explosive device, the Socialist Party was taking a shot at Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who did not attend, despite having no official activity on his agenda.
Defence Minister Pedro Morenés was the only other government representative present at the ceremony, during
which Prince Felipe pinned the Red Cross of Military Merit on the flag covering Sgt Fernández Ureña’s coffin. Fernández Ureña, 35, was part of an explosives disposal unit assisting an Afghan army combat post. He had joined the 12th Engineer and Pontoon Regiment in 2008. It was the first death of a Spanish serviceman in Afghanistan since the Partido Popular (PP) took power in November, 2011.
In February 2010, the PP criticised Socialist PM José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero for not attending the funeral of a soldier who died in Afghanistan, which coincided with his visit to the US to meet with President Barack Obama. One hundred members of the Spanish military and two nationalised interpreters have died since the beginning of the mission in Afghanistan in 2002.
However, Alex Sánchez Mollinguer refused to do so, which undermined one of Urdangarin's alibis with regard to a sum of €375,000. He had claimed that the money, which ended up in a Swiss bank account, had not been paid to him by the company in question.
Urdangarin is currently under investigation together with his former business partner Diego Torres for the embezzlement of €2.3 million he received from the Balearic Islands regional government through a now-defunct non-profit organisation, the Nóos Institute, which
he managed. Last week Torres released a batch of emails that purportedly implicate the royal son-inlaw in an ongoing scheme to divert public funds.
In one of the emails, Urdangarin’s former secretary, Mario Sorribas, tells him in 2007 to “play down” the fact that he is now a partner in the Foundation for Sports, Culture and Social Integration – the organisation that was founded after Nóos was dismantled the year before. “Don’t leave any traces that you are the ‘godfather’ of this affair,” Sorribas wrote after he saw on the Royal Household’s website a potted biography of Urdangarin that detailed the former Olympic handball player’s participation in various foundations and philanthropic groups. It was not the first time that Torres’ defence team
has released compromising emails.
Last March, his lawyers turned over to the court a number of emails and documents that magnified the Infanta Cristina’s role in the affair and implied that the Royal Household had tried to cover up Urdangarin’s tracks. But Judge Jose Castro decided not to include the princess in his investigation, saying that there was no evidence that she was a party to what was going on.

Russians break tourism and spending records While the number of foreign visitors to Spain increased throughout 2012, it was the Russians that broke all the tourism records, according to data from the Industry, Energy and Tourism Ministry.
Between January and November last year, their numbers increased by 42
per cent, topping the one million mark for the first time – at 1.17 million, nearly twice as many as arrived in 2010.
However, Britain continues to lead the Spanish tourism sector, with 13 million visitors last year, followed by Germany, with nine
million; France, with 8.5 million; and Italy with 3.4 million. But compared with visitors from other countries, Russians spend more – the average Russian spent €988 compared to the average Briton, who spent €807. And Russians are not just visiting, they are also snapping up properties on
Spain's coast.
Mediterranean
Realtors are now targeting Russian buyers on the Costa del Sol and the Costa Dorada, where 75 percent of the properties on some complexes are Russianowned.
Spaniards biggest smartphone users
Despite not having the best networks, the fastest connections or the cheapest tariffs, Spain is one of the European countries with the biggest internet addiction.
More than six million Spaniards – a quarter of all users – are permanently connected to the internet in one way or another, according to the new “Information Society
in Spain” report for 2012.
The report revealed that smartphone penetration in Spain is 63.2 per cent, the highest in the European Union and one of the highest in the world. Just over 40 per cent of Spanish users now use their mobile phones to access the internet – three times as many as in 2011. In less than a year, the number of
people with online access at home and on the move has increased 300 per cent.
In addition to mobile phones and PCs, Spanish users employ an average of 2.4 devices to go online, from their TVs – which have increased as access points by 800 percent – to tablet computers (up 500 per cent) and eBooks (up 300 per cent). The report
also revealed that personal communication is suffering – users communicate with a greater number of people via microblogging sites such as Twitter and social networks (28.6 and 18.6 people, respectively) than in person (16.15 people).

Brief housing market rally ends
after a rally of just a few months, the floundering housing market turned negative again in November as sales fell once more, according to figures released on Monday by the National Statistics institute. Sales had picked up in the summer after falling 17 months in a row ahead of the rise in the value-added tax rate on new home purchases from 4 percent to 10 percent and the removal of tax relief on servicing mortgage payments on the family home. Homes have lost about a third of their average value since the property bubble burst in 2008, leaving real estate developers an estimated 700,000 unsold homes, many of which remain in the hands of the banks. Not enough done to fight corruption
a new poll shows that 63 per cent of Spaniards feel there is more political corruption than ever; 54 per cent said there is more of it in Spain than in other countries, and a staggering 95 per cent said they did not trust the political parties and the justice system's ability, or willingness, to fight corruption. Cases like the illegal financing of the Catalan party Unió in the so-called Pallerols investigation contribute to that impression of impunity. in that case, the main suspects did not go to trial until 16 years after the events and ended up avoiding jail anyway thanks to a last-minute settlement deal hammered out this month. However, 67 per cent of those questioned feel that corrupt office holders represent only a minority of politicians.

At an emergency meeting on Monday, the UN Security Council unanimously backed France's military intervention in Mali to fight Islamist rebels. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he hoped the intervention would help restore "Mali's constitutional order and territorial integrity".
After the meeting, France's UN ambassador Gerard Araud said his country had the "understanding and support" of the 14 other Security Council members, adding that France also wanted the deployment of a West African force to happen "as quickly as possible". The force will be deployed under UN Security Council resolution 2085,
which allows for a 3,000strong African-led mission to intervene in Mali later this year in the absence of any negotiated solution.
France has sent about 550 troops to the central town of Mopti and to Bamako, and a defence ministry official said troop numbers would increase to 2,500 in coming days. He said France feared that the rebels would march on the capital, Bamako, creating a grave security threat for the wider region. He reported that French air strikes have forced back Islamists who
accompany a federal debt ceiling rise.
The US is expected to hit its $16.4 trillion borrowing limit by February unless lawmakers act. The last debt ceiling battle between Congress and Mr Obama ended in July 2011, after bringing the nation close to default. This resulted in a credit rating downgrade as well as
the government has banned the hunting of lions and leopards because of the rapid decline in the numbers of big cats. tourism minister Sylvia Masebo said there was more value in game-viewing tourism than blood sport, which brought in just £1.9m last year. She said on Monday, "tourists come to zambia to see the lion and if we lose the lion we will be killing our tourism industry" – adding that the country did not have enough cats for hunting purposes. the big cat population is estimated at around 3,400 to 3,500 and about 55 were killed by hunters each year. Neighbouring Botswana is banning all sport hunting from 2014, while Kenya stopped hunting for sport decades ago.
took control of northern Mali last year, though the rebels seized one town on Monday, killing more than 100 militants. At least 11 Malian soldiers and a French helicopter pilot have died so far. Aid workers said
many people had been fleeing areas targeted by French air strikes over the past four days.
A spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross said the humanitarian situation was "fast deteriorating".
Obama warns Republicans of consequences of debt
America is "not a deadbeat nation", US President Barack Obama said at a White House press conference on Monday, and warned Republicans unconditionally to approve a rise in the US debt ceiling. He said it would be "absurd" to use the borrowing limit as a negotiating chip, but Republican House Speaker John Boehner said spending cuts should

turmoil in the financial market.
Mr Obama said he was happy to engage in debate over US fiscal policy, but only after an increase in the debt limit, but added: "What I will not do is to have that negotiation with a gun at the head of the American people." Speaking on a day marking a month on from
the massacre at a Connecticut primary school, Mr Obama also said he would present proposals for gun control later in the week. He said he believed stronger background checks, control of high capacity magazine clips, and an assault weapons ban were all measures that made sense but admitted he did not know if they would get through Congress.

Berlusconi sex trial plea rejected
a Milan court has denied former PM Silvio Berlusconi’s request to halt a trial where he is accused of having sex with an underage prostitute. it also decided it did not need to hear testimony from dancer Karima El Mahroug aka Ruby Heartstealer.
Berlusconi's lawyers requested the trial be halted while he runs in the current election campaign, saying he would be too busy to follow the case or attend court. Prosecutors have accused the defence of trying to prolong – and now delay – the trial to avoid a verdict before the election, at the end of February.
Berlusconi, 76, is accused of paying to have sex with Ms Mahroug in 2010 when she was 17. Sex with a prostitute who is under 18 is a crime in italy. Both he and Ms Mahroug have denied ever having sex. BRazil
Crack addicts face obligatory treatment
Officials in Sao Paulo are to begin making people addicted to crack cocaine get treatment under a new law which allows mandatory treatment for drug users in "advanced stages of addiction" and at risk of death. they said social services, not police, will identify potential patients on the streets.
two years ago, the government launched a multi-million dollar programme to tackle an epidemic spread of crack. Under the plan, 4bn reais (£1.2bn) is to be spent on prevention, care and policing by 2014. Brazil is the world's biggest market for crack cocaine with more than million users, according to a recent Brazilian study.

The Times newspaper Lord Heseltine quoted the words of Margaret Thatcher: ‘Never go into a room unless you know how to get out of it.’ While his relationship with Baroness Thatcher was not always completely cosy, he was making a point. “To commit to a referendum about a negotiation that hasn’t begun, on a timescale you cannot predict, on an outcome that’s unknown,

where Britain’s appeal as an inward investment market would be the centre of the debate, seems to me like an unnecessary gamble,” he said.
David Cameron is currently preparing to unveil his approach to the thorny issue and is under great pressure for a simple in-out referendum. He is thought to favour a compromise, staying in Europe, at the same time clawing back some powers.
‘We have to move on,’ says Miliband
Opposition leader Ed Miliband has been frank about the shortcomings of the last Labour Government in Britain, in particular its policy on
immigration. He told the Fabian Society:
“I bow to nobody in my celebration of the multiethnic, diverse nature of
Britain, but high levels of migration were having huge effects on the lives of people in Britain – and too often those in power seemed not to accept this.
Over 25 Years Years Experience in Spain
“The fact that they didn’t explains partly why people turned against us in the last general election. We have to move on from New Labour,” he said.
From 2017 pensions will make sense!
The radical shake-up of the state pension in Britain is being unveiled this week. It is long overdue and will mean a single payment and an end to means testing for most people. The present system is out of date and so complicated that many people do not understand it, and government officials who suggest they do appear unable to explain it! A new single flat rate, about £144 in today’s money, will be introduced from 2017. Women who take career breaks and the self-employed will do better with the new system. Iain Duncan Smith at the Department for Work and Pensions has worked extremely hard on the project and had a significant mess to clean up as the old system had been patched up for decades.

Lord Heseltine joins fray on Britain’s future in Europe
There is a great deal of political posturing going on in Britain at present with regard to Britain’s future role in Europe and there is a general feeling that recent warnings about a possible exit from the European Union could have been orchestrated to make Prime Minister David Cameron’s moderate approach appear acceptable.
www.thenewsonline.es
How could this have happened in Britain? That is the big question following the scale of the sex abuse revelations confirmed in a report on the activities of former BBC disc jockey Jimmy Savile.
The facts are staggering. The late television personality is now thought to have been involved in 214 criminal offences over half a century, including 34 rapes, but he was never stopped.
The offences are alleged to have taken place on BBC premises, in
hospitals and even a children’s home. Now the broadcaster and the Department of Health are likely to have to pay out substantial sums to victims in compensation.
Of the 450 people who have come forward since Savile’s death, 73 per cent were children at the time the offences took place.
While Jimmy Savile was a tireless worker for charity, the dark side of his character has shocked fans who witnessed his rise to fame in the world of popular music and his success as a television show presenter.
EWS IN BRIEF
BELFAST
Violence in Ireland
Over 40 days of road blocks and episodes of violence have brought back memories of the festering sore that was once Northern Ireland.
Because of a dispute over the flying of the Union flag at Belfast City Hall there are fears of a return to the bad old days – and already businesses have been affected.
Children as young as eight have been involved in the protests and the police, who have faced petrol bombs and other missiles, have been forced to use baton rounds and water cannon to contain the problem.
Senior politicians from Belfast, Dublin and London are meeting to discuss the situation in the hope that a solution can be found amid claims that a doctor was prevented from attending a terminally ill cancer patient by protestors who blocked the road. UK
So close
There wasn’t a great deal to choose between Liverpool and Manchester United but Alex Ferguson’s side retained their seven-point lead at the top of the English Premiership thanks to goals from van Persie and Vidic. Sturridge pulled a goal back for Liverpool and he could easily have had a second.
Manchester City remain second and won 2-0 at Arsenal, which has not always been a happy hunting ground for them. Arsenal were a man down after 10 minutes and never really recovered.
The most emphatic victory was Chelsea’s 4-0 drubbing of Stoke, but it was a slightly flattering victory as Stoke’s Jon Walters scored two own goals and missed a penalty.
Chelsea are third but 11 points off the leaders and it would take a collapse by United for the London side to have a realistic chance of winning the league title.

Report demands Brave teenager dies after HMV are better hospital completing most things latest in long line regulations on her “Bucket List”
Deaths at Stafford Hospital have forced a demand for reforms of the National Health Service in Britain and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has described the performance of the institution as “simply not worthy of a civilised society”. While the blame game plays out and there are accusations and counteraccusations as to what was at the root of the problem, there is unquestionably a culture of cover-up within the health service and little or no accountability. While it is important to emphasise that much of the health service in Britain is in good shape, the Stafford hospital scandal has shown that
things can go spectacularly wrong and it has been estimated that as many as 1,200 patients could have died needlessly in appalling circumstances between 2005 and 2008. A Sunday Telegraph investigation has concluded that none of the executives has been disciplined with just one suspended from working in nursing. The Francis report into the scandal, which follows a two-year public inquiry, is to call for radical changes in the supervision of health care to prevent such systematic failings in NHS regulation. The photo above shows some of the campaigning relatives of those who have died in the hospital.
A teenager who gained nationwide fame after writing a "bucket list" of things to do before she died has lost her battle with cancer at the age of 17. The Pride of Britain Teenager of Courage award winner touched hearts around the world with her blog and upbeat attitude and Alice Pyne, from Ulverston in Cumbria, managed to complete most of her list – including meeting Take That and going whale watching. She was feted by celebrities and politicians as the nation rallied to help her fulfil her dreams. The list – part of her blog – attracted the attention of footballer Rio Ferdinand, Hollywood actor Channing Tatum and TV host Philip Schofield. Alice's idea was inspired by the film The Bucket List, which follows Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman as they embark on a road trip to
do things they want to before they "kick the bucket". The teenager, who lived with her parents, Simon and Vicky, and younger sister, Milly, achieved many of her wishes, as told in her blog. She died on Saturday after battling illness for the past six years. In a posting on Alice's blog, her mother Vicky gave the sad news. "Our darling girl, Alice, gained her angel wings today. She passed away peacefully with Simon, Milly and myself by her side," she wrote adding, "We are devastated and know that our lives will never again be the same." Some of the things on brave Alice’s Bucket List and the results were: To get everyone eligible to join a bone marrow register. To get EVERYONE to have a bucket list. To get to the Royal Garden party in May. DONE – To buy a static caravan for my charity.
DONE – To actually receive my B.E.M. medal DONE – To go whale watching DONE –- To go to my school leavers prom DONE – To meet Take That DONE – To design a Emma Bridgewater Mug to sell for charity DONE – To stay in the Chocolate room at Alton Towers DONE – To swim with sharks DONE 'ish – To go to Kenya (went to Kent-ya!) DONE – To enter Mabel in a Labrador show DONE – Photo shoot with Milly, Clarissa, Sammie and Megs DONE – To have a private cinema party for me and my BFFs DONE – To stay in a caravan DONE – To have a purple Apple ipad DONE – To have a nice picture taken with Mabel DONE – To have my hair done DONE – To have a back massage

The collapsed music, movies and computer seller HMV is refusing to accept the tens of thousands of gift vouchers given to people for Christmas presents as the company goes into receivership. The company recorded poor Christmas sales despite giving preChristmas discounts of 35% on many items and almost 300 stores and 4,350 staff face uncertainty as negotiations unfold.
The historic music shop will have become the latest high street victim of the financial crisis and doubledip recession, if a 'white knight' rescuer cannot be found for the chain.
City firm Deloitte was brought in to take charge last night after crisis talks failed to find another solution.

Fishing sector ‘dead’ Andalucia leads in street protests The first woman to run the Algeciras fishing guild, María Oliva Corrales, told a reporter from El Pais daily newspaper last week: "The sector is dead, look around you, there was a time when there were so many boats moored here in Algeciras that by stepping from deck to deck you could cross from one side of the harbour to the other. Now, there are barely 20 fishing boats here."
Corrales, whose family has fished in this area for three generations, blamed Brussels and the Spanish government for not reaching agreement with Morocco on fishing quotas. In December 2011, European Union lawmakers rejected a oneyear extension of the bloc's fisheries agreement with Morocco, giving overfishing and interference
your
with the resources of the Western Sahara people as reasons. Some 70 Spanish ships from Andalusia and the Canary Islands had to immediately leave the fishery grounds. Corrales said the veto was "the last straw": "Things were already bad. Now we are being thrown overboard." There has been no news on the settlement of a new protocol or on whether the government plans to extend aid to fishermen. The Spanish government has called for European money to support the affected fishermen.
Last month, Agriculture Minister Miguel Arias Cañete urged the Commissioner of Fisheries of the European Union, Maria Damanaki, to "quickly" negotiate a new fisheries protocol with Morocco for the Spanish fleet to return to the
African waters.
To add to their troubles, in May last year fishermen from Algeciras had to call for help from the Guardia Civil Guard several times after the Gibraltar Police tried to divert them away from waters around The Rock, where they had fished without any problems in the past. But now Gibraltar has said that fishing with nets in the waters around The Rock is outlawed under a 1991 European environmental law unless a license is issued. "We hope the situation with both Morocco and Gibraltar gets fixed quickly," Corrales said, adding that she did not know if there were alternative fishing grounds available.

Axarquia to get tourism upgrade After obtaining the accreditation of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas (ECST) for the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park, the Junta de Andalucia now wants to take the promotion of tourism there a step further.
This involves getting the ECST accreditation for all the hotels, inns, bars and restaurants in the area. So far, 15 establishments have expressed interest. To qualify for the accreditation they must improve their services and their involvement with the park by increasing their recycling efforts and optimising their energy consumption. They must also contribute to local development by only hiring people who live in the area. The park obtained its
Residents denounce dangerous trees
After a ten-metre-long branch fell on to the roof of the parking area of a building in the La Colina area of Torremolinos, narrowly missing a man who was going for his car, the residents of Edificio Andaluz decided to take action.
The deputy chairman of the residents’ association, Fernando Corredor, said the huge eucalyptus trees on the land belonging to a construction company that surrounds the parking area had been allowed to grow untended for the past three years and falling branches were an almost everyday occurrence. He said it was only a matter of time before someone got hit. “They’ve already damaged the car park roof which was only installed a few months ago,” he said.
The residents are now demanding that the town council put pressure on the construction company to cut back the trees. They plan to sue the company if no action is taken.

a 45-year-old woman tried twice to knock over her former husband in the car park of Lidl on Saturday before crashing her car into some rubbish containers. an off-duty policeman at the scene arrested her. the police later said her actions had apparently been intentional but would be investigated further because the woman had a history of mental problems. after her arrest, she was taken to the Hospital Clinico in malaga for a psychiatric assessment. Her ex-husband, aged 52, was taken to the Carlos Haya hospital and treated for multiple bruises.

Rural electricity cables replaced
Endesa has begun to replace more than nine kilometres of electricity cables in the surrounding rural areas at the town council’s request, to improve the service and lower the risk of forest fires. Councillor Jose Francisco Ruiz Fontalba said the company was taking advantage of the repairs that have to be made to the cables as a result of last year’s fires to replace the old ones, which were a fire risk. He said some of the cables were being replaced on private property free of charge and it was as if “the owners had won the lottery”.

F
irst of all, a European Commission spokesman said a few days ago that Brussels will not be asking the Spanish government to make more cuts this year. So it looks as if this will be the year of reforms, as Mariano Rajoy stated at the beginning of the year.
M
eanwhile, the risk premium has dropped drastically from around 600 to its current hovering around the 330 to 340 mark. This means that the government can sell bonds and treasury notes at a lower rate of interest. This is a bit complicated for non-economically minded people like myself but put simply, it means it will be cheaper to buy them back, unlike the ones that were sold last year for much higher interest rates.
L
ast year, huge sums of money were being sent abroad by companies and rich individuals but they are now feeling more reassured by several market indicators like the risk premium and others so they’re keeping their money here in Spain. Serious capital flight usually indicates that a country is about to go bankrupt but that danger has retreated into the distance, for the moment.
E
xports, which have been keeping the economy afloat for the past three years, continue to grow while many multinationals are beginning to see Spain as a cheaper alternative to other European countries, thanks to this government’s labour reforms. Car companies in particular are viewing Spain favourably. Ford is transferring from Belgium to Valencia, Renault has opted for Spain rather than France or Turkey and Citroen is manufacturing more parts at its factories here, all of which will lead to more jobs. This means more people will be paying social security to keep the dole and pension schemes afloat, more money will be circulating at street level so more companies will be making a bit of money which will go back into the system, and so on.

haven’t forgotten my New Year resolution to seek out as much good news about Spain as possible, so here are a few little glimmers of light at the end of a seemingly never-ending economic tunnel. making up for the foreign tourists who were staying home at the beginning of the current economic crisis but they’re beginning to trickle back, while the Spaniards are now staying at home. The increase in numbers is small – around 2.5 per cent last year – but they look set to continue rising, especially if the Russians keep coming in ever-larger numbers.
T
he banking system is currently undergoing a drastic overhaul and will be more strictly supervised in the future so the banks will have to stick to what they should be doing rather than trying to get into real estate or any other area of economic activity. This mean they’ll not be inclined to fuel “booms” of any kind – least of all construction ones – which means there will be no busts to send us all into a downward spiral.
I
have to confess that a lot of the economic figures are just so much mumbo-jumbo to me, although I can vaguely perceive that they’re good news. And would you believe it – the media, especially the proSocialist ones – are ignoring the good news. They’ve forgotten the famous bail-out they harped on about all last year and are now playing up the dangers of Catalan independence. The pro-Socialist El Pais is now criticising Rajoy for doing nothing about the threat to hold a referendum on the subject next year – it was one of Rajoy’s most persistent critics for not going for a bail-out, when in fact Spain doesn’t need one, as time has shown.
H
owever, it did publish a little article recently to the effect that Rajoy seems to be relying on time to bring the whole independence issue crashing down. The pro-independence parties are already beginning to squabble among themselves and it’s becoming harder for Catalan regional premier Artur Mas to pretend that an independent Catalonia wouldn’t have to leave the EU, now that on average one EU official or other contradicts him each week. A majority of Catalans have already said they won’t vote for independence if it means leaving the EU. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Artur Mas has bitten off more than he can chew and one day the Catalans will realise just how much harm he’s done to them. However, I fear the media will not help matters – every day the main headlines are about Catalonia and the independence referendum, which is exactly what Mas wants. He seems determined to do Spain as much harm as possible and it’s sad to watch the Spanish media doing so much to help him.
T
he case of Angel Carromero is a prime example of how justice doesn't exist in this country. After being sentenced to four years in Cuba for his involvement in a vehicular death of a well-known dissident, the 27-year-old Carromero was sent home last month to serve out his sentence under undisclosed terms. Spain and Cuba signed a treaty in the 1990s that allows prisoners from their respective countries to serve out their prison terms back home. In other words, Cuban prisoners convicted in Spain for certain crimes can be sent back to the island to complete their sentences where they can be closer to their families. Spanish nationals also enjoy the same privileges under the pact.
L
Angel Carromero
ast July, Carromero was arrested after the rented car he was driving crashed into a tree on a rural road, killing well-known dissident Oswaldo Payá, 60, the leader of the dissident Cuban Liberation Movement, and his assistant Harold Cepero, 31. The details of the accident are still very sketchy and perhaps will remain that way for some time. Payá’s family still claims that the organiser of the Varela Project – the signature drive Payá had put together demanding more freedom in Castro’s Cuba – was killed when Cuban security agents ran Carromero’s vehicle off the road.
T
he Spanish politician hasn't acknowledged this version, only accepting publicly his responsibility for the accident. But there are many conflicting, disturbing issues. Carromero, a member of the Nueva Generaciones organisation, the Partido Popular’s youth wing, was in Cuba on a secret mission to help Payá and his people with their dissident activities. He was delivering some $3,000 to the
group, money that had been intended for the political wing of the youth organisation. With Carromero was Jens Aron Modig, president of the Youth League of the Swedish Christian Democrat Party, who was in the car at the time of the accident.
T
he rightwing Swede told the Cuban authorities that he didn't know what had happened because he was asleep in the car at the time of the accident. Modig was allowed to return to Sweden days after the accident. He had scheduled a news conference in Stockholm, but that meeting with the press was cancelled at the last minute when Spanish officials advised him that it was better not to say anything that would jeopardise Carromero’s fate.
T
he importance of this Spanish youth to the PP was made evident last month when Esperanza Aguirre, the former Madrid regional premier, decided to visit him on at least two occasions after Carromero was repatriated to serve out his sentence at a Segovia jail. Under the terms, he was allowed to leave Cuba and continue his fouryear sentence in Spain after much diplomatic haggling. What the Cubans got in return isn't clear. The Miami Herald, quoting a conservative news website in Madrid, Zoom News, reported last week that Carromero’s family paid unknown Cuban agents some three thousand dollars in cash for his release – the same amount that was reportedly delivered to Payá’s organisation. That, of course, has not been made public.
C
arromero was released on Friday after penitentiary officials decided to grant him what is known as third degree status – in other words early parole. He is free to return to his €50,000 a year job as an advisor to the neighbourhood council at Moratalaz, a Madrid suburb.
J
ustice has indeed been served in Carromero’s case; justice in the manner that the privileged in this country enjoy. If anyone of us had been in a car accident that caused the death of an innocent person, there is no doubt that there would be no such privileges. Once again – and unfortunately not for the last time – the famous “enchufe” (connections) creeps up as a prime source for helping the privileged get what they want out of life.

Announced this morning in the UK - women feel threatened by men being chivalrous! This morning’s round up of the headlines on Sky TV told us of a study that has shown that women these days feel threatened by men with good manners. My first reaction was well, how stupid can that be, but we are all told to be on our guard at all times and I have even been told by one female aquaintance that all men are potential rapists. Well taken to the limit, with very few exceptions,
physically that could be so but aren’t we women going a bit far? I remember when I was a child (ok, before anyone says it, that was a fairly long time ago!) I remember men getting up on a train or a bus to offer a lady their seat. It was virtually unheard of to have a man walk through a door without letting a lady through first, let alone breezing through and dropping it in your face as
happens these days (and, no, it’s not just the men that do this) and I clearly remember my father “doffing” his hat to ladies and standing up when a lady entered the room. If your car broke down, you could accept help from a man who stopped to change the tyre for you or wait with you until the good old RAC turned up. So what has happened? Well in the first place ladies a whole lot of this is
down to us. Like it or not some of us have become so agressive that men are frightened of us. Poor loves are never sure if they’re going to get sneered at for having sheer good manners or if we are going to do as we should and say a polite “Thanks you”. I owned a building company in the UK for 25 years and on very few occasions did I come across rudeness from men. Sure, I was in a man’s world but,
once they got the idea that I knew what I was talking about, I was totally accepted. As far as I am concerned, if I do exactly the same job as a man (and that includes putting goods on to a lorry and driving it, if that’s what I want to do) then I should get the same pay. Other than that, if I act like a lady (and yes, guys, some of us certainly don’t) then I expect to be treated
like one. My husband treats women with chivalry and kindness so it is still out there. Can we then get off our high horses, let men be real men and look after us and, for our part act as we should by saying thank you to them when they’re chivalrous and maybe the women that feel threatened by nice, kind men won’t feel that way so much. written by Jane Newman

Community News Discounts for Discounts for tax bills in Mijas if all at new paid in February machine People of the Coin area have taken to the touch display “Discounts” machine installed just two months ago in the La Trocha Commercial Centre on the Coin to Cartama road with 8,300 uses registered in its second month.
Throughout the month of November, the number of impressions of tickets exceeded the 7000, figure and that has continued to grow since the arrival of the 'machine of discounts'. The machine was used more during December due to the arrival of the holiday season according to the local council with 120 discounts being
available in 45 places in the area that endeavours to energise and increase the local trade with Jumauto being the local company that received the most “visits”.
Other companies such as Burger King and Nicotin, both in the La Trocha Centre itself, present higher trading figures in terms of the number of tickets printed for the offer. The machine along with the incredibly popular Sunday Flea Market and Farmers Market are putting Coin firmly on the shopping and services map of the Malaga area.
The measure, which up until the present only applied to pensioners, seeks to boost tax and fee payment early in the year before deadlines. Usually taxpayers in Mijas can only obtain a five percent discount on their taxes if they have a standing order at the bank and if that standing order is paid the first time the tax bill is issued. But this time around, things are different. This year even without a arranging a standing order at the bank, it will be possible to obtain a discount if 2013 taxes are paid during February. The announcement was made on January 9th by Economy and Tax Councillor Mario Bravo, who explained that “there are pensioners who earn 2,000 euro a month and

workers who earn half of that or people who are unemployed and don’t have this discount.” Therefore, in light of the difficult economic times faced by many, the Town Hall has decided to extend this opportunity to those who, for whatever reason, do not wish to pay by standing order. The measure applies to the IBI property tax, the vehicle tax and rubbish fees. Those taxpayers who do have standing orders at the bank will receive a five percent discount if the property tax is paid on March 5th when issued for the first time, the rubbish fees are paid on April 5th and the vehicle tax on May 3rd. Those bills not paid during the first round will be issued to banks again with a 2.5% discount for those who pay the property tax on June 5th, the rubbish fee on July 5th and the vehicle tax on August 5th. After those dates, everyone has until November 20th to pay this year’s local taxes – without a discount, but also without a late fee. Those residents who cannot make payments should visit the Tax Office to create a payment plan.
Las Lagunas car boot
A new Thursday car boot sale is making waves in Las Lagunas and creating a vibrant market for second hand goods as buyers and sellers meet to share bargains and bring the area to life. Every Thursday the market area is set up next to the municipal nursery at Dinamarca Avenue; the first sales were made five weeks ago when 45 stands set up shop in the area. The market is still in its infancy, but already there are 60 stands as the organisers strive to supply the demand for space. So if you have a bit of spare time, pop along for a bargain.

A word from the Church of Scotland “They stand in the cold by the thousands in Times Square, New York City. What draws them to that place? There’s no sporting event or rock concert. There’s just a huge lighted ball that drops down a pole on top of a building. It takes only a few seconds and hardly seems worth fighting traffic and subway crunch to see – except that it happens on New Year’s Eve”, writes Dave Branon. You may wonder why there is a holiday created over such a movement? Other holidays celebrate famous birthdays, historical milestones or some other important event. New Year’s Eve, ‘Hogmanay’, celebrates just the passage of time. Much rejoicing and partying goes on to signal the end of an old era and beginning of a new one. The old year’s problems and struggles become a dim memory when we think of getting a fresh start. Friends, how has 2012 been for you? Maybe for some the year gone by has been a very happy one with many happy memories such as obtaining that new job, a wedding in the family, birth of a new child for example. Yet, for others, could it be last year has been a year of pain and struggle? Someone you loved and cared for has let you down and broken your heart, you have lost a loved one due to
illness or unemployment has brought an unwelcome intrusion into your life. For many of us this New Year we will feel the acuteness of past events in one form or another. The end of one year and the dawning of a new one provides an excellent opportunity to wipe the slate clean and make a fresh start. Henry W. Beecher (1813-1887) offers good advice to us when he says, “We have passed through one more year. One more long stage in the journey of life, with its ascents and descents and dust and mud and rocks and thorns and burdens that wear the shoulders, is done. The old year is dead. Roll it away. Let it go. God in His providence has brought us out of it. It is gone …. its evil is gone, its good remains. The evil has perished and the good survives.” Friends, however last year has been, may we press on into this New Year with energy, faith and optimism and look to the God who sustained us in the past to lead and guide us into tomorrow. Best wishes for 2013!

The parents, who themselves are in mourning, must now guide their children through what is usually their first moments of grief in their lives. There is no simple way to assist children in managing the loss of a pet. Children experience sorrow just as deeply as adults, and sometimes even more.

Your Weekly Entertainment Guide INSIDE THIS WEEK End of an era - Tracey of JKs thanks all her friends and customers At Pógs, Fuengirola - Northern Soul Night Salon Varietes - The Entertainers – Friday 18th Jan – one night only
Searching for support from you SEARCH (Spanish Equine Association for Rescue, Care and Rehoming) which has now been in existence for a year, is holding two fund-raising events this month. This coming Friday, January 18th, is one of SEARCH's popular quiz nights. The venue this time is The Olive Tree, the new and increasingly highly-thought-of restaurant on the Cartama Road in Coin. The event is being held in response to local demand – SEARCH organiser Sue Perry says that “Inland people are anxious to have a good night out without driving too far and without it costing too much these days”. She and husband Alan were asked to host another evening locally after the success of the last quiz night held in Cartama. Starting at 7pm and costing only 2 euros per person to participate, Alan will once again be the quiz master. (He’s something of an expert these days after all his experience in question setting.)
And, naturally, if you want to eat, food will be available from the delicious and extensive
menu offered at The Olive Tree. Parking outside is safe and easy. Sue and Alan are planning to make quizzes a monthly event, varying the venue from month to month, alternating between Coin, Cartama and Villa Franco, with possibly a joint event at the end of the year for a trophy.
On Saturday 26th January SEARCH are holding another fund raiser, this time at Aguamania on the CoinCartama road (Km.2.5). Last summer Sue and Alan hosted a memorable garden party where the ever-popular Frankie B strutted his stuff by the pool and had virtually everyone joining in. Well he's back for a winter event this time and you should book your tickets early.
Since settling permanently in Spain some five years ago Frank (pictured right) has been singing to enthusiastic audiences all along the Costa and inland, recreating the Soul/Motown sounds of singers such as Lionel Richie and The Commodores, so loved by many expats.
When Frank gets into his stride it is almost impossible not to be foottapping, swaying and then up on your feet dancing!
Happy Birthday

His musical career started early, playing the trumpet at school and in the late '70s he was singing lead vocals and backing with Second Image on the disco circuit along with the well-known group Heatwave – whom he later joined and sang with for five or six years.

Among his favourite numbers are Al Green's romantic “Let's Stay Together” and the iconic “Heard it Through the Grapevine” sung by Marvin Gaye.

And how did Frank get involved with a local horse charity? Well, he and his partner Christie rescued a neglected young skewbald colt named Cheyenne from a gypsy a couple of years ago and is now hooked on these fascinating animals!
SEARCH is a very small charity. Sue and Alan keep the horses at home and do most of the work and the fund raising. Finding good homes is their main priority and Sue trains the youngsters herself – though she’d love some help!

NORTHERN SOUL NIGHT Northern Soul, Cross-over and Rhythm and Blues, there's a full show this Saturday at Pógs. Collectively known as Suite-45 (as in 45 rpm) The Rare Soul Experience, features guest DJ's David de Santiago (pictured below) down from Madrid and Dr Risi from Vitoria, (right). Both are renowned throughout the Soul Scene of Spain and their sets will be interspersed with appearances from our own local DJ's, vinyl vamp Retro Girl, Sergio M. Vivas, Antonio Navarro and probably several more, all seriously dedicated to their retro
vinyl musical craft. Saturday the 19th January has all the makings of an excellent night. Previous gatherings of this “Soulvation Army” at Pógs have drawn an exceptionally large turnout and this Saturday looks to be just the same, with tip-top music and authentic up-tempo ´60s dance styles.
The Northern Soul music and dance movement flourished in the North of England in the late sixties at iconic watering holes like Manchester's famous Twisted Wheel. Then later in the early seventies at Wigan Casino, the Blackpool Mecca and the Golden Torch in Stoke. It is a loose association of essentially American Motown-based music suited to dance. The Pógs Saturday Soul Night is simply an amplification of this style. Purists may argue the finer points of true Northern Soul all night long or at least until the
Sadly, JK’s, the live music venue and bar in Coin, after four years of trading has closed for good.
Tracey ran JK’s for the last year and would like to thank all her customers, both her regulars and occasional for their support and business. Tracey would especially like to thank Chris and Phil and all the stallholders for making the monthly charity auctions such a great success.
DJ's finally close it down to go home. In the end, it's Northern Soul and it's a way of life.
Tracey is in the process of looking for a new venue to carry on the monthly auctions so, watch this space! She will let us know when something suitable has been found but, in the meantime, if anyone needs to contact her, her number is 620 374 191.

while ago a friend of mine suggested I review Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Being familiar with my harsh reviews he was curious to know my opinion. However, I could never bring myself to review it, truth being, it’s hard to fault and he’d probably beat me up if I said anything bad about it (not that I would).

Directed by Steven Spielberg Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones
Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, is a leader in the final months of his life, a leader facing an epic crisis.
The Civil War has torn the country asunder and taken hundreds of thousands of lives, and the President’s attempts to end slavery are being blocked by a cabal of resistant politicians. Steven Spielberg’s depiction of a pivotal moment in American
history is compelling and has now garnered 12 Oscar nominations including best actor for Daniel Day-Lewis, best director, best film, and best supporting actors for Field and Lee Jones. It will be Day-Lewis’s third Oscar win if he pulls it off and all the hot money is on his doing just that.
The story is part bio-pic and part political thriller and Day-Lewis – who famously stayed in character on set even
when the cameras weren’t rolling – turns in a towering performance as the greying, hunched Lincoln battling to end the war and introduce the 13th Amendment to ban slavery. It’s an epic that does not need to cover Lincoln’s whole life – the snapshot
is enough to convey the power and importance of the President.
Day-Lewis has already won a Golden Globe for best actor – it looks as though he will need a new mantleshelf this awards season. A must see.
DVD NEW RELEASE Release date: January 21st 2013
THE POSSESSION (Uncut Edition 2012) Director by: Ole Bornedal Starring: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick & Natasha Calis.
Based on a true story, The Possession is the terrifying story of how one family must unite in order to survive the wrath of an unspeakable evil.
Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Kyra Sedgwick) see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes
oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. But as Em’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.
The Possession is better than the majority of offensively bad exorcism movies out there. A statement that says more about the poor quality of the genre, rather than the strengths of this film.
uring this conversation about “Lord of the Rings”, I voiced my concerns about “The Hobbit”. At the time the film had not yet been released and as we are both Tolkien fans, we began to debate how good or bad it could be. My main concern still is – as I have not yet seen it – could Jackson pull it off. Just because “Lord of the Rings” was epic, doesn’t mean he can do it again.
M
y other concern is Martin Freeman playing Bilbo. You see, I have a little problem with Mr. Freeman, he played the lead role in another favourite book of mine that was made into a film and well, to put it nicely, he wasn’t very good.
I
am referring to his performance in “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”. Granted the film was itself was a huge let down, and Freeman’s portrayal was just as disappointing. Freeman always seems to play weak and dopey characters, hence my concern for “The Hobbit”. My friend however, had other views. He raved about how wonderful he was in the Sherlock Holmes series , as Watson – true, he was good as Watson.
H
owever, Bilbo is the main character in the film, so basically the whole film is riding on his performance, and personally, I don’t think he can pull it off.
G
oing back to my concern about Jackson, trying to recreate the success of “Lord of the Rings”, I really don’t know what he is playing at, how is he going to stretch a 300 page book into three two-and-a-half-hour films? I mean really, talk about milking the cow dry!
J
ackson will always be known for one of the best cinematic trilogies of our time, but making “The Hobbit” into a trilogy is one of the biggest mistakes of his career, along with overlong selfindulgent “King Kong”. I also don’t understand why Jackson is so fond of Andy Serkis. There is something about Serkis I just can’t stomach, he’s so smug and arrogant, ughh! And now just to make things worse, Jackson let him be second unit director on “The Hobbit” – that is just wrong.
A
nyway, “The Hobbit” is now out to many mixed reviews, and I still haven’t reviewed “Lord of the Rings”, so I ask you, would you like me to review “Lord of The Rings”? Personally, I would like to review “The Hobbit” first, and do the reviews in chronological order.
I
really hope that I am wrong about “The Hobbit” and that my friend’s views on Freeman are correct. It is rather weird how Smaug the Dragon is played by Benedict Cumberbatch, who was Sherlock in the Sherlock series. This makes me think, “The Hobbit” could end up being a very twisted Middle Earth Sherlock episode. Let’s hope I am wrong.
L
ooks like Jackson managed to get a few nominations at the Oscars, but nothing close to the “Lord of Rings” nominations.

Instinctively you could feel driven to get going but other factors were not in the frame or ready for you to put your plans into action, you will still have to pace yourself until next week when things start moving quicker for you. In the past you have followed a path that others perhaps expected you to follow but there will be opportunities to move into a new territory. This is a great week for meeting new people; love and romance are calling you. This week is like you are recovering a piece of yourself that has laid dormant for a while, you will be feeling more grounded, alive and rooted on a goal, vision or path. A relationship is starting to stabilise and you will feel able to get your life in order. You have a deep focus on cultivating and energising the things that really matter in your life and this in turn will make you feel balanced and secure as you proceed to get the results you want. Of all the signs you are used to pushing the boundaries and going one step further. You are currently testing the ground and are reflecting on how much power you have in manipulating or directing things in your favour. A new beginning or a new road needs exploring to see if it holds the potential it is offering. It is in your best interest to slow down and take things one step at a time, multi tasking is likely to send you into a spin right now. You would like to get settled and back into a normal routine but I am afraid it isn’t going to be plain sailing yet. Right now your relationships are at the forefront and you are working on putting in place the changes needed to bring you more peace and happiness. Others will flock around you this week as your creative energy is high and they sense the playfulness in you. This is a great time for socialising, having fun and bringing the spark back into a relationship. Lately you may have been feeling overwhelmed where a burden or a fear may have made you think twice about something. You were probably heading on a course and now you are thinking of changing direction. This could be a period of testing where you will have to decide on your course of action, you are likely to see exactly what needs repairing and the adjustments that need to be made. Your teeth, your health, Fast-food linked to your quality of life asthma and eczema
In this article we are going to discuss dental caries, also known as dental decay.
It is worth knowing that dental caries is the most common human disease and is responsible for most tooth loss between the ages of two and 30. Did you know that it cost the general dental service in England and Wales for quarter ending June 2005 £380,000,000?
What is caries?
Dental caries is a disease of the mineralised tissue of the teeth – namely enamel, dentine and cementum – caused by the action of microorganisms in fermentable carbohydrates. It is characterised by demineralisation of the mineral portion of these tissues followed by disintegration of their organic material. The disease can result in bacterial invasion and death of nerve tissue. Infection can then spread into the root area, causing pain. However, in its very early stages the disease can be arrested since it is possible for remineralisation to occur.
What causes caries?
Caries is a multifactorial disease and understanding its nature is important to be able to prevent its occurence. The outcome of studies about the cause of dental caries is unanimous and its progress is described as follows: bacteria, food (carbohydrates), plaque, acid, demineralisation – caries. Bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar in the food causing the PH in saliva to drop and become acid. This results in demineralisation – simple as that, surprised?
Obviously it is not quite that simple since caries is,
as we have said above, a multifactorial disease and many factors have to go wrong in order to get a caries lesion but the most important factor is the presence of bacteria and carbohydrates.
Oral hygiene is very important in preventing dental caries but that is not enough. The key word in the fight against dental caries is fluoride – without fluoride the chance of getting caries is pretty high even with good oral hygiene. Fluoride prevents bacteria from adhering to the tooth surface and is lethal for bacteria. A great deal of money has been spent to understand the nature of the disease and its causes – understandable when you realise how prevalent it is and how much is spent on its treatment.
Here are few factors that have been discussed besides the ones mentioned above: age, sex, race, religion, culture, socioeconomic and geographic factors.
Types of caries
Crown caries: This is the most common type of caries and appears in all age groups. Normally the caries lesion appears between the teeth, but it can appear on other surfaces as well.
Root caries: This is usually age related, appearing in middle-aged and older patients. It normally spreads itself wider than crown caries though not deeper.
How to prevent dental caries
1. Good oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day and flossing will reduce the risk of caries.
2. Reduce your intake of sugar/carbohydrates to less than five times a day. Studies have shown that if you eat five or less times a day – including snacks – it significantly reduces the risk of getting dental caries.
Eating fast food three times a week may lead to asthma and eczema in children, according to researchers from the University of Auckland in New Zealand and the University of Nottingham in the UK. They studied data from more than 500,000 children in more than 50 countries and concluded that poor diet may be to blame for rising levels of these allergyrelated conditions.
The researchers found that children who ate fast food, such as take-away burgers, risked severe
asthma, eczema and itchy, watery eyes. Eating plenty of fruit appears to be protective – fast food often contains high levels of saturated- and trans-fatty acids, which are known to affect immunity, while fruit is rich in antioxidants and other beneficial compounds, the researchers said. They added: "If the associations between fast foods and the symptom prevalence of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema is causal, then the findings have major public health significance owing to the rising consumption of fast foods globally."
A spokesman for Asthma UK said research suggests that a person's diet may contribute to their risk of developing asthma and that eating healthily may have a beneficial effect: "Evidence suggests that the vitamins and antioxidants found in fresh fruit and vegetables have a beneficial effect on asthma therefore Asthma UK advises people with asthma to eat a healthy, balanced diet including five portions of fruit or vegetables every day, fish more than twice a week, and pulses more than once a week."
3. Topical fluoride. Use fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash.
Coca-Cola launches obesity advert
5. Xylitol. Chew sugarfree chewing gum to reduce the risk of getting dental caries. This has been proven beneficial by many studies.
The two-minute commercial highlights the firm's record of making low-calorie drinks and reminds viewers all foods contain calories.
4. Regular visits to your dentist. Early caries lesions can be detected.
A word of advice
Even if a tooth doesn't hurt you, it doesn't mean it never will, so if you have a broken filling, tooth etc, seek advice. Remember, teeth never get better by themselves! As usual let us know if you want to know more about dental caries or any other topic we cover. Please email us or call us (see our advert for The British Dental Clinic the front page). Next time we will discuss tooth wear – a neglected subject in everyday dentistry. Samuel Ramsey DDS, MSc(ucl)London Diploma oral periodontics Diploma oral prosthodontics Diploma oral surgery
The soft drink giant has launched a new advertisement addressing obesity for the first time on television.
The advertisement, which aired on US cable networks on Monday, follows mounting pressure on the soft drinks industry. Coca-Cola has said the video was not made in response to criticism of the soft drink industry, but is an effort to raise awareness. It is not the first time the Atlanta-based firm has used advertising to address this issue, but it is a first for television. A company spokesman said: "There's an important conversation going on about obesity out there, and we want to be a part of it."
In the advert, a female narrator says Coca-Cola offers smaller portion sizes, is working to make better-tasting, low-calorie sweeteners and has voluntarily made lowercalorie drinks available in
schools. The video adds: "All calories count, no matter where they come from."
Another advert, which will air later this week, features activities that add up to burning off the "140 happy calories" in a can of Coke. But a spokesman for the Centre for Science in the Public Interest, said that if the company was serious about tackling obesity it would stop
fighting a tax on its drinks. "It looks like a page out of damage control 101," he said. "They're trying to disarm the public." Industry tracker Beverage Digest has reported that consumption of fizzy drinks in the US has been declining steadily since 1998. Meanwhile, New York City is preparing to ban large sugary drinks in restaurants, cinemas and stadiums.

Failure for some but the British didn’t do too shabbily again
The Golden Globe Awards took place last weekend
… and there were a few surprises as well as many disappointed faces in the audience The much acclaimed new James Bond movie, Skyfall, came away with just one gong and that was for Best Theme Tune. Co-writers British pop star Adèle (pictured far right) and Paul Epworth struck gold for the Skyfall theme tune sung by Adele. In her acceptance speech she said “Oh my God” repeatedly, followed by "I'd like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press. I never thought I'd say that!" Meanwhile Brit actor Ben Affleck (pictured right) as the Iran hostage in Argo received the Best Drama award over expected winner Spielberg’s epic Civil War film Lincoln. In his acceptance speech he said of Spielberg and the other fellow nominees Ang Lee, Kathryn Bigelow and Quentin Tarantino, "Look, I don't care
what the award is. When they put your name next to the names she (“she” being presenter Halle Berry) just read off, it's an extraordinary thing in your life." Affleck also claimed the Best Directing prize, despite not even being nominated for an Oscar.
Lincoln, despite seven nominations came away with just one award for Best Actor in the Title Rôle which went to another British Actor, Daniel Day-Lewis (who has dual British / Irish citizenship). He said: "If I had this on a timeshare basis with my wonderful gifted colleagues, I might just hope to keep it for one day of the year, and I'd be happy with that." Best Musical or Comedy went to Les Miserables (Los
Miserables in Spanish) with Hugh Jackman picking up gold for Best Musical or Comedy Actor and Ann Hathaway receiving Best Supporting Actress. "Thank you for this lovely blunt object that I will forevermore use as a weapon against selfdoubt," Anne said. Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain won the Globe for Best Dramatic Actress as a CIA agent obsessively pursuing Osama bin Laden.
Waltz was Best Supporting Actor for his role in Quentin Tarantino's slave-revenge tale Django Unchained. Tarantino won the Best Screenplay prize.
The Scottish tale Brave won
best animated film. Austrian director Michael Haneke's Amour won the Globe for Best Foreign-language Film, while the prize for Best Musical Score went to Mychael Danna for Life Of Pi.
Other acting prizes went to Jennifer Lawrence as Best Musical or Comedy Actress for the oddball romance Silver Linings Playbook and Austrian Christoph
And now it’s the nominations for the Oscars! The 85th Academy Award nominations for next month’s spectacular The Oscars – named after the gold statuettes given to the winners – were announced by inventor of TV’s Family Guy, Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone of Easy A fame, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The awards will be presented here on February 24th. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln tops the Oscar nominees with 12 nominations including best picture and best director – probably hoping to do better than at last weekend’s Globes ( see above). Life of Pi secures 11 nominations while the musical Les Miserables, directed by Tom Hooper, and David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook followed closely behind.
Lincoln was nominated for best picture giving Spielberg his eighth best director nomination. A win would be his third in the director category. And it's the eighth film Spielberg has had in the running for best picture. Best actor has a nod for two-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-
Lewis as Lincoln and supporting acting nominations for Sally Field who played Lincoln's wife Mary Todd as well as Tommy Lee Jones who plays a radical antislavery legislator. I also received nominations for cinematography, costume design, film editing, original score, production design, sound mixing and adapted screenplay. The animated adventure Life of Pi was nominated for best picture, best director, original song (Pi's Lullaby) adapted screenplay, cinematography, film editing, original score, production design, sound editing and mixing and visual effects.
Les Miserables, the film adaptation of the longrunning musical set in 19th century France, got acting nominations for lead Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean and Anne Hathaway’s supporting role as Fantine, as well as nominations for costume design, makeup, original song (Suddenly) production design and sound mixing.
The Weinstein Company's Silver Linings Playbook's eight nominations included best picture and across-theboard nods for its actors: Bradley Cooper, who played a man recently released from a psychiatric institution, and Jennifer Lawrence, his romantic foil – as leads, and Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver in supporting roles. But apart from all the nominations, two records have also been broken. One is for the youngest ever nominee for the youngest Best Actress category in the shape of Quvenzhané for her part in ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ at just nine years and 135 days old – more than four years younger than previous record holder Keisha CastleHughes, who was the ripe old age of thirteen when she got a nod for ‘The Whale Rider’ in 2003. (The youngest actor ever in any category was Kramer vs Kramer actor Justin Henry at eight years old in 2003.) The other record breaker is for the opposite
end of the spectrum with 84-year-old French veteran Emmanuelle Riva who becomes the oldest ‘Best Actress’ nominee for her performance in Michael Haneke’s stately drama ‘Amour’ – breaking the record previously held by Jessica Tandy of Driving Miss Daisy fame.

Richard Way The Government’s planned changes to the UK state pension system mean a large group of retired expats, and many who move abroad before 6th April 2017, will receive less monthly income than other Brits who made the same or less contributions retiring abroad after that date. The changes, designed to simplify the tiers of state pension available by having a full weekly flat rate of £144 available, have been

met with mixed reactions. While they will make it easier for women, the selfemployed and low earners to receive a full pension, no one will be entitled to the full rate until they have paid National Insurance contributions for 35 years, five years more than the current 30-year threshold.
This means some retirees planning to move abroad, might be forced to delay their plans. Given the changes, financial planning will be even more crucial

La Cala
Mar at the Malaga marina – its literature claims the visitor will have a unforgettable experience. Well it has left me the unforgettable image of a lone turtle swimming in an under-size glass container, a beautiful creature, really trapped in terrible conditions. In fairness the centre is limited in size and in my opinion it is educational, but it would be nice to have the 10 minute introduction film in English as well as Spanish or some audio device to help foreign visitors. And apart from the oh! so lonely turtle the other few a specimens of marine life on display are also in limited display water cabinets. Part of the display highlights the plight of marine life caused by our everyday discarded
rubbish which enters our seas. It shows how turtles in particular suffer in many ways either by being caught in the nets or ingesting the rubbish, fantastic and very necessary ongoing work.
But the centre spoils this message by keeping its various species in terrible conditions particularly the turtle (I have named him Willy). So through your readership, can we have a campaign to free Willy the turtle? I suggest he is given to the Fuengirola zoo who have an excellent aquarium section. Malaga is a beautiful city with so many great attractions but Museo Alborania falls short of the image the city is trying to impart to the tourist and its citizens.

Sirius, the brightest of them all
When you look at the stars in the night sky you will notice that they are all at varying brightness. It stands to reason then that there must be a brightest star.
A
star’s brightness is measured in magnitude, the lower the number the brighter the star. The Sun is magnitude –26, the full Moon is magnitude –13 while Venus, which is the brightest of all the planets, can reach magnitude –4.9. The faintest star that can be seen with perfect eyesight under ideal conditions is +6.4. Whenever I ask people ‘Which is the brightest star?’ they invariably name the North Star. But I’m afraid the North Star ranks fairly low on the scale at only magnitude +2.
S
irius, the ‘Dog Star’ is the brightest star in the sky (except for the Sun of course) shining at magnitude –1.46 and at this time of year it can be seen outshining all other stars. Sirius is in the constellation of Canis Major or The Great Dog of Orion the hunter. It follows obediently across the sky at Orion’s heels.
S
irius is the brightest star because of its closeness to Earth and also its size. The closest star to the Sun is actually a trio of three stars known collectively as Alpha Centauri at a distance of about 4.3 light years. Sirius is the fifth closest star to us at 8.5 light years away. It is twice the size of the Sun but about 25 times more luminous; it is a very young star only about 200 million years old compared to the Sun’s five billion years old. It is twice the brightness of the next brightest star Canopus. It is also a very hot star with a surface temperature of over 10,000°C. The high temperature makes Sirius shine with a dazzlingly blue/white colour. Compare the colour of Sirius against Betelgeuse in the top left hand corner of Orion and you will be amazed at the vast difference. Betelgeuse is a deep red in colour, telling us that it is a much cooler star than Sirius.
I
t is quite easy to find Sirius, just look to the southeast around 9 p.m. and you will see it dazzlingly bright in the sky. If you have trouble identifying it then an easy method is to locate the constellation of Orion standing proudly in the southern sky. Now follow a line from the three stars forming Orion’s belt down to the left and you will find Sirius. At the moment Jupiter is also in the same area, simply follow the three stars in Orion’s belt this time up to the right and the very bright ‘star’ you come to is Jupiter.
A
ncient Egyptians based their calendar on Sirius. They found that the first appearance of Sirius in the morning sky around 21st July coincided with the annual flooding of the River Nile. And the Romans referred to ‘Dog Days’ meaning hot and sultry weather, again associated with the first appearance of Sirius in the morning sky. It is also believed that the Egyptians built the three pyramids of Giza to line up with the three stars in the belt of Orion.
I
n 1844 a German astronomer named Friedrich Bessel observed a slight wobbling of Sirius; this led him to believe that Sirius was not alone. Nearly two decades later, on January 31, 1862, American telescope maker and astronomer Alvan Graham Clark first observed the faint companion, which is now called Sirius ‘B’, or affectionately "the Pup". Sirius B is a white dwarf star, meaning that it has gone through its life cycle of once being a brilliant bright star. It expanded into a red giant stage and now has collapsed down upon itself. It has begun to cool down and eventually will be no more than a dead body orbiting Sirius ‘A’ – about the same distance as Uranus is from our Sun and going around Sirius ‘A’ once every 50 years or so.
I
t is an unexplained mystery how the Dogon people from Mali west Africa knew about the existence of Sirius ‘B’ and its 50 year orbit thousands of years before telescopes had been invented, as even with today’s modern telescopes it is still very difficult to see Sirius ‘B’. Your guess as to how they knew about it is as good as anybody’s.

Barca ease past Malaga to extend lead After eventually getting a win against Eibar in the Kings Cup in midweek, Malaga set out to beat Barca and do the double over the top two. A full house at La Roseleda saw Malaga start well, Santa Cruz had a half chance as Malaga took the game to Barcelona. With Malaga comfortable, all their good work was undone when a Camacho back pass was cut out by Messi who rounded Caballero to slot home. Harsh on Malaga and when Fabregas nearly finished from outside the box a minute later Malaga were on the rack. After half time Santa Cruz headed a Joaquin free kick straight at Valdes in the Barca goal.
Five minutes into the second half Malaga were two down, a Messi chip found Fabregas who ran in to finish well. Malaga were getting a lesson in possession football and went behind again on 82 minutes as Thiago finished
well from another good Barcelona move. Malaga got a consolation in the last minute as Buenanotte curled in a great free kick.
Malaga's next game is again against Barcelona at Camp Nou tonight (Wed 16th) in the Copa Del Rey first leg. It will be a real tester for Malaga and a dilemma for manager Manuel Pellegrini on how to approach the game. Celta Vigo are next up in the league at home on Saturday night at 10pm.
WHAT A SEASON SO FAR
With 19 league fixtures gone in the La Liga season it seems only right to review the season so far at its halfway point. The season started in turmoil, Al Thani, Malaga's Qatari owner seemed to have lost his love for the club and the
money for the club had dried up. Players, the taxman and other clubs were unpaid, Santi Carzola was sold to Arsenal and Rondon went to Rubin Kazan for big money but Malaga still had their manager Manuel Pellegrini who seemed to hold the club’s players together and make everyone at the club ready for the new season.
A first league game at newly promoted Celta Vigo resulted in a makeshift Malaga team winning 1-0, 16-year-old Fabrice scoring the winner and so the season began with a bang. Champions League rolled into La Roseleda if only in qualification form and Malaga despatched Panathinakos with ease. League form was good and the Champions league in full came in the form of
Huge Nike deal for Rory McIlroy Rory McIlroy has been unveiled as Nike's new brand ambassador in Abu Dhabi, making him one of the highest paid sports stars in the world.
The exact details of the sponsorship may never be revealed, but it has been reported to be worth around $100m (£62m) to $125m (£77m) over five years. That could earn the County Down golfer

Tiger Woods has been Nike's standard-bearer for 16 years, but the world number one will be paid even more.
"I chose Nike for a number of reasons," said McIlroy. "They are committed to being the best, as am I. Signing with Nike is another step towards living out my dream." “Rory is an extraordinary athlete who creates enormous excitement with his on-
course performance while, at the same time, connecting with fans everywhere," said Cindy Davis, President of Nike Golf.
"He is the epitome of a Nike athlete, and he is joining our team during the most exciting time in Nike Golf's history. We are looking forward to partnering with him to take his remarkable career to the next level."
The announcement was made ahead of the the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship this week.
fantastic wins against Zenit St Petersberg and away at Anderlect. The mighty AC Milan were put to the sword at La Rosaleda and that was nine points, top of the group and virtual last 16 qualification in the bag. Malaga fans were in dreamland, the only downside of the Champions League was a league hangover as Malaga struggled in the matches after Champions League games.
The Copa del Rey has seen Malaga progress if somewhat shakily against lower league teams and now face a daunting twolegged trip to Barcelona in the quarter finals. In the league Malaga on the whole have been good with great wins at home against Valencia and a notable win over Real Madrid 3-2.
Another top four finish is a real possibility but the top four finish will be nothing if UEFA have their way. Malaga have been banned from European competition next year and fined heavily due to financial irregularities. The club are adamant that this has all been resolved and I believe that this UEFA decision will be overturned on appeal. It would be a disaster for Malaga if not.
Malaga have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League winning the group. We now have a really winable game against Porto. The first leg is at Porto on February 19th and I hope to see Malaga in the quarter final draw.
The Al Thani issue for the club and supporters is
Laura Robson put on a commanding display to race past American Melanie Oudin and reach round two of the Australian Open for the first time. The British
number two, who turns 19 next week, hit 11 aces and a succession of forehand winners in a 6-2 6-3 win to join compatriot Heather Watson in the second round.
Wayne’s Poker Tips Playing AQ and AK you must always play aggressively, never limp in trying to trap unless you’re an experienced player and are prepared to fold should you miss the flop and turn. A big mistake by many players is over playing these hands. We must remember they are drawing hands a 50/50 coin flip against any under pair. If you miss the flop and your continuation bet is called, slow down and think what
your opponent has. With AQ if there is a raise in front of you re-raise (3bet). We need to do this for information. If they come back at you with a 4bet or all in we have to think maybe AA, KK or AK and a fold in this spot is not a bad play, a flat call most likely an under pair such as QQ. AK heads up more so in cash we have to strongly consider calling, raising any aggressive play. However

a very important factor. Why does a man invest millions, only to then pull the plug? If he does not want to invest in the club, come out and say so. Right now we need a new centre back, buy us a new one or sell the club to someone who would. Every supporter would love for our owner to invest more money and take Malaga to the next level. If this does not happen we would lose our Manager.

with some table actions a fold with AK pre flop is not a bad idea. You have two other players at your table, 3 and 4 betting one of these could have AA/KK with the other having one or two of your outs if they have AQ or worse AK. A good rule to follow when playing tournaments in the early stages is when blinds are low we need to be playing tight and think very carefully about calling or pushing all in with AK. Do we want to go out with a drawing hand when we could have folded and waited for a better spot?

India inspired by Mahendra Dhoni
India outplayed England to inflict a crushing 127-run defeat and level their fivematch one-day series at 1-1. Captain Mahendra Dhoni (72) and Ravindra Jadeja (61 not out) blasted 82 off the last six overs as India accelerated to 285-6. Seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar then removed Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan in the space of three balls to rip the heart out of England's batting line-up. India's spinners did the rest as the tourists were all out for a dismal 158.

eagle. Jamieson, who led by five shots heading into the last day, carded a finalround 72, and missed out on second successive European Tour win in Durban by a solitary shot. Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand (68) was another shot back in third, two strokes ahead of Ireland's Padraig Harrington in fourth. It was Oosthuizen's sixth career European Tour win and elevated him to a career-high fourth in the world rankings.
The former Celtic and Middlesbrough boss replaces Craig Levein, who was sacked in November following a run of poor results. Strachan has signed a contract that will run until the end of the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign. "I'm very proud and my family are very proud. The time is right for me to be able to take a job like this," he said after his appointment was announced. "Every club you go to there's always challenges but this is the first time the challenges are in front of a nation. If you can be successful you can make a nation happy and make a nation proud and that is the priority for me to be able to do that with help from other people. "I've had to deal with
players and I've also had a couple of years where I can look at national football. I have the experience, I like working with people, I like dealing with people and I like trying to make people better." The 55-year-old has been out of management since leaving Boro in October 2010. Capped 50 times, Strachan featured in Scotland's 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals campaigns. Strachan's first match in charge will be the February friendly against Estonia at Pittodrie Stadium.
Vuelta Unveils Punishing Mountainous Route Alberto Contador, last year’s winner, declared "it will be war" after he studied the route for this year's Vuelta a Espana race which will feature a record 11 summit finishes for a Grand Tour.
Organisers unveiled the route on Saturday which will begin on August 24th in Galicia's rugged Rias Baixas regions. Riders will have to tackle a first category mountain-top finish as soon as stage two. They then face three summit finishes in
Andalusia, three in the Pyrenees before culminating in the 13 km Angliru, reputedly Spain's most difficult climb.
"It will be war right from the second stage and it's going to be very, very hard," Contador told reporters.
This year's race will enter unexplored territory when the opening 27 km team time trial starts on a giant raft, used usually for seafood farming in one of Galicia's many fjords.
"Starting on one of these rafts is a great recognition of our seafaring tradition," said regional president Alberto Feijoo at the presentation in a theatre in central Vigo, which concluded with live music by dozens of Galician bagpipers, drummers and local flautist Carlos Nunez.
The nearest the race will get to the Costa del Sol will be on Stage 8 from Jerez de la Frontera to Estepona on the 31st August. Stage 9 starts in Antequera on September 1st.

Scott Waites wins World bDo Darts title
Scott Waites eased to his first BDO World Darts Championship title with a 7-1 demolition of Tony 'The Silverback' O'Shea at Frimley Green. The 35-year-old Yorkshireman dominated the allEnglish affair from the outset. Waites raced into a 5-0 lead before O'Shea briefly rallied to trail 5-1 at the break. Waites then took out 110 with a double 16 to seal victory. Crowd favourite O'Shea, 51, struggled to hit the heights of earlier rounds as he lost his third Lakeside final. Speaking to BBC Sport's Colin Murray after the match, newly crowned champion Waites said: "All I tried to do was battle my way to a few sets in front. It was so hot up there, very difficult to hold the darts.”

Praise for Sian Massey on Twitter
Assistant referee Sian Massey has been praised on Twitter as the ‘best in the Premier League’ after a strong performance during Chelsea’s visit to Stoke City. The 27-yearold intervened after referee Andre Marriner gave a penalty to the home side during the second half of the match, correctly pointing out an offside in the build-up which meant that no penalty should have been awarded. The decision was overturned. And Twitter, so often home to abusive criticism of officiating, was full of praise for Massey’s decision after the incident. “Sian Massey is by far and away the best official in the Premier League!” said Alex Hillier on the social networking site, “Bet Andy Gray and Richard Keys feel stupid.”
