Algeria defends tough response

With five people still missing and the official death toll set at 37 Prime minister Abdelmalek Sellal offered an unapologetic defence on Monday of the tough actions his government took to end the Sahara hostage crisis, saying that the militants had intended to kill all their captives and that the army saved many from death by attacking.

Mr. Sellal told a press conference that 29 kidnappers had been killed, including the leader, and three had been taken alive. He said that in all, 790 workers were on the site – including 134

foreigners of 26 nationalities – when it was first seized. He said the militants were from Egypt, Mali, Niger, Mauritania, Tunisia and Canada, an assertion the Canadian government said it was investigating. However, it remains unclear how many had died at the hands of the kidnappers or the Algerian Army. Several countries, especially Japan and Britain, have expressed concern about what they considered Algeria’s hasty response.

Pensions last week saw the announcement of plans for the new pensions arrangements for Brits. The BBC gave an account of what their interpretations of the announcements from the Government meant. It seems that the base rate will be going up from £107 to £144 – but not for everyone – and one of the things that concerned me was that they reckoned that, no matter whether or not you had fully paid up for your uK pension, if you hadn’t paid into the system for the last 10 years, you weren’t going to be eligible for the increase.

Having not paid in since we’ve been here, some 16 years, I was rather taken aback that they had received a portion of my money “up front” before we left and we were now going to be penalised. That, together with the fact that they’re hanging on to the whole amount for another six years, and I can tell you I was not a happy bunny! The consulate’s recorded message told me to call the official uK pensions advice service in the uK and they hadn’t got a clue what was going on – not a lot of good! So, I went on the internet and I’ve found some details about how we’ll be affected and put them on page 16 this week for you to have a look. As they say, none of it is final yet and they will be tweeking it but, for those of us who have chosen to live abroad, it looks like they’ll have to do a lot of “tweeking” to keep us happy here. We’ll keep you informed as it all develops.

Algeria defends tough response

The United States has not publicly criticised Algeria – regarded as an ally in the fight against militant Islamic groups in Africa – but US law enforcement and military officials said on Monday they would have taken a more cautious approach, using sophisticated surveillance to glean information and hopefully outmanoeuvre the kidnappers.

However others said the whole tragic episode had unfolded so rapidly leaving the government little choice but to kill the kidnappers, even if hostages died in the process.

The crisis began on Wednesday when militants attacked two buses carrying foreign workers to the remote site in eastern Algeria. A Briton and an Algerian died in the incident. The four-day siege ended at the

No cap on salaries

Draft reforms to legislation for the country's savings banks will not impose a cap on the directors' salaries. Instead the savings banks (cajas) will be obliged to produce an annual report which details the amounts paid to their boards of directors, including expenses and pension plan contributions. If the bank in question has received bailout funds, directors’ salaries will be subject to previous legislation, which set limits of €600,000 a year. The reforms are the government's next step to comply with the conditions set down by Brussels in exchange for the €40 billion bailout fund that will be used to recapitalise Spain’s banks. However, the legislation has yet to begin its passage through Parliament so it will be some time before it comes into force. Banks are expected to be complying with the reforms by the end of 2014.

PM orders “exhaustive” audits of PP’s finances

Amid reports of illegal cash payments being handed out to top Partido Popular leaders, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Monday ordered “profound and exhaustive” audits of his organisation’s finances and donations.

Rajoy told a meeting of the National Executive Committee that party treasurer Carmen Navarro will conduct the first audit and the results will be handed over to independent auditors from a firm yet to be named.

The scandal broke last week when Swiss officials told a Spanish court they had traced some €22 million deposited in cash in a secret bank account belonging to Luis Bárcenas, the PP's former treasurer who for 18 years was part of a team that handled the party’s finances. Bárcenas and his wife have been under investigation for more

than three years for alleged tax crimes and money-laundering counts stemming from the huge Gürtel kickbacks-forcontracts inquiry. In 2009, he stepped down as PP treasurer temporarily but made it permanent the following January. Then former PP MP Jorge Trías Sagnier added fuel to the fire, alleging in his column in the El Pais newspaper that Bárcenas and another former treasurer, Álvaro Lapuerta, had handed out envelopes of cash from undisclosed sources to selected party leaders as bonuses on top of their regular salaries, starting

in the 1990s. In a later interview with the same paper, Trias Sagnier said: “The anonymous donations were anonymous when it came to the contributor, but the parties had an obligation to register them as anonymous donations. Whether they were eventually registered that way I don’t know. But what I do know is that there were people who received great amounts of money, along with their salaries, as expenses or bonuses.”

Up until 2007, political parties could receive anonymous donations under a 1987 financing

law that was in effect for 20 years. But those donations could not surpass five per cent of what the parties received from the state's annual budget. Under a new financing law introduced by the Socialists, anonymous donations are now prohibited. Socialist Party leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba announced on Sunday that his opposition group will file a criminal complaint before the High Court asking for an investigation into the alleged payments of bonuses. He also said that he will call for a thorough parliamentary investigation into the

matter and demanded that both Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro appear before Congress.

For her part, PP secretary general María Dolores de Cospedal counterattacked the Socialists the same day, saying that Socialist politicians made a lot of money when they governed in Castilla-La Mancha. "There are people who were leaders in Castilla-La Mancha who have vast fortunes and no one has offered any type of explanations," said De Cospedal, who is now the region’s premier.

Accused officials Chain stores seek keep their jobs to cut wages Despite corruption in high places being very much in the headlines these days, there are at least 200 elected officials accused of corruption in five of the country's 17 regions who remain in their public positions, in line with the principle that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Political corruption is not exclusive to any party, although the Partido Popular (PP) ranks first, with nearly 50 corruption suspects in the Balearics, and another 50 or so in other regions. Second place goes to the now-defunct Unió Mallorquina (UM), a regional party in the Balearics that produced nearly 40 suspects.

Third on the list is the Socialist Party with over 30 members facing charges, mainly in Catalonia and Andalucia. In this latter region, councillors and mayors belonging to the Izquierda Unida (United Left) also

The employers’ association in the chain store sector, Anged, which represents El Corte Inglés, Carrefour, Ikea, Cortefiel, C&A, Alcampo, and Leroy Merlin among others, has proposed that employees should lose one of their extra payments as well as the bonuses they receive for working on Sundays and bank holidays.

stand accused misconduct.

of

Geographically, such political corruption is pretty widespread although Valencia, Andalucia, Catalonia and Galicia are particularly plagued by high-profile cases, while Madrid is home to one of the biggest scandals in democratic history: the Gürtel case, a bribes-for-contracts scheme that affected members of the regional government under former regional premier Esperanza Aguirre and four local councils.

However, here the officials involved were removed from their posts and are still under investigation. But barely 20 convictions have been handed down in the six regions with the greatest number of known cases. Despite the public's condemnation of corruption at high levels, voters elected the Partido Popular with a comfortable majority in November 2011, even though the party was viewed as the one with the most corruption cases.

Anged, which is currently negotiating a new collective four-year agreement with the unions, has also suggested that employees should work more hours, and that their wages should be

directly linked to consumer spending. In the current climate of low demand this would lead to lower salaries.

The unions have said the proposal represents “a complete break” with any attempt at conciliation.

They said: “The companies must accept that in the current economic climate they cannot expect to have the same profits as they enjoyed in the boom times, they can’t expect to consolidate those margins with the salaries of their employees.”

Madrid to target prostitution Mayor Ana Botella has presented a plan "to eradicate demand" and to "provide comprehensive support" for the prostitutes, whose numbers have risen drastically since the current economic crisis began, by "offering them a

feasible alternative".

The initiative is a continuation of a programme begun under former mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón in 2004, aimed at pushing prostitution away from the city centre, where sex

workers were approaching prospective clients in full daylight.

Prostitution is neither legal nor illegal in Spain, which has forced local authorities to find creative ways to get the sex trade off their streets.

Red weather alert nationwide Number of registered foreigners drops Although the number of people registered on municipal "padrons" shows that Spain's population as a whole has grown slightly, according to National Statistics – Institute figures 47,265,321 at January 1st last year, 74,828 more

than at January 1st 2011, the number of registered foreigners has dropped for the first time in 15 years.

However, the drop is small, down from 5,751,487 at the beginning of 2011 to 5,736,258 at January 1st last year –

that is, 15,229 fewer. Rumanians continue to be the largest group (829,936), followed by Moroccans (651,207), Britons (374,842), Ecuadoreans (293,602), Colombians (246,451), Bolivians (178,463) and Germans (179,069).

Royals have got back their drop in salary Bad weather swept in with a vengeance with cold from the West on Monday – to add flood and snow to the weekend's high winds.

Waves around eight metres high pounded northern coasts while

snow fell in all the country's regions, with the exception of some parts of Andalucia.

Snow ploughs were out in force in Madrid while people living alongside the Ebro river watched

anxiously as the water level continued to rise.

The weathermen said the situation would gradually improve from Thursday onwards but warned that the cold is here to stay for a while.

King Juan Carlos and Crown Prince Felipe have both recovered the salaries they earned before July last year when they decided to take a cut to show solidarity with government workers stripped of bonus payments by spending

cuts, amounting to 7.1 per cent on their incomes. This meant a drop of €20,000 for the king and €10,000 for the prince.

However, the breakdown of the Royal Household accounts published on Monday

revealed that King Juan Carlos had cut the allowances paid to Queen Sofía and the princesses Elena and Cristina by €55,000 each.

The king also reduced the number of official vehicles from 72 to 45.

New EU driving licence affects foreign residents More than a million foreigners living in Spain will have to renew their driving licences to be in line with the EU driving licence which has just come into force. The Traffic Authority's information service informed The News that foreigners holding the pink indefinite licence have to change to the new licence immediately while all others have up to two years to get in line.

This means that anyone renewing a licence in that period will automatically get the new one. The common-format licence for all EU drivers has improved security protection and is part of a package of new measures to improve free movement across borders, crack down

on driving licence fraud and improve road safety across the EU.

An EU transport commission spokesman said on Monday that currently traffic police across Europe have to recognise more than 100 different types of paper and plastic driving licence: "ID photos may be long out of date, the categories for which the driver is licensed unclear and the document may be easy to forge. Fake driving licences are a licence to kill, that is why we need licences which are easy to

Metro refuses help for trapped dog

animal rights groups have denounced madrid metro officials for refusing to allow volunteers to help find and rescue a greyhound dog. it had escaped from its owner last Thursday and was running wild inside the tunnels from station to station on Line 6 looking for a way out, causing several delays on different lines. in a statement posted on their Twitter account, metro officials said: “We are sorry to inform that we found the dog dead. We can assure you that we did everything possible to rescue the animal.” However, a statement signed by several animal protection groups said the metro officials had not allowed any association to help search for the dog. Several members rode the metro trains to see if they could find the greyhound and some people had even entered the tunnels without authorization.

read, easy to understand and very difficult to falsify."

He noted that one advantage for drivers is less red tape when they move to live in a different EU country, thanks to a European electronic data exchange system between national administrations. The system also makes it harder for drivers banned in one country to carry on diving undetected in another. The licence change is

also accompanied by the introduction of new vehicle categories, including the creation of a separate category for mopeds, and a system based on step-bystep access to more powerful bikes based on experience.

One drawback is that non-EU countries may not necessarily recognise the document and an international driving permit (IDP) will still be needed when driving outside the EU.

Fuel consumption fell an "unprecedented" six percent in 2012, as prices continued to rise, according to the National Energy Commission (CNE). although the december figure is still not in, consumer behaviour up to November led the CNE to state in a report that "fuel consumption will register the greatest annual fall in 2012 since the beginning of the crisis in 2007, consolidating at levels of the 1990s." The industry watchdog noted that despite dwindling demand, fuel prices continued to rise and said the increase could be solely explained by higher raw material prices. it said that up to august, operators had maintained "a gross distribution margin of over 20 cents a litre, the highest in recent years".

President Obama seizes the moment

“A decade of war is now ending. An economic recovery has begun. America's possibilities are limitless. My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it – so long as we seize it together." Mr Obama was also sworn in at a small White House ceremony on Sunday, as the US Constitution dictates presidential terms begin on 20th January. Hundreds of thousands of people crammed the public ceremony on the National Mall. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, with senators, congressional leaders and dignitaries, attended the event at the US Capitol.

In a roughly 18-minute, 2,100-word speech, Mr Obama called for "collective action" to preserve American freedom, which he linked to social and economic equality. "We, the people, understand that our country cannot succeed when a shrinking few do very well and a growing many barely make it," he said.

And after four years of hyper-partisan struggle, during which he has repeatedly tussled with conservatives, he then challenged Washington to change the tone of its politics. "We cannot mistake absolutism for principle, or substitute spectacle for politics, or

treat name-calling as reasoned debate," he said.

Mr Obama also referred to his just-launched campaign to curb gun violence. "Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit, to the hills of Appalachia, to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherished, and always safe from harm," he declared, naming the town in Connecticut where 20 primary school children were massacred last month. After Monday's speech, Mr Obama attended the traditional inaugural lunch, dining on bison and lobster with US

lawmakers in the Capitol building's Statuary Hall. The president's motorcade then set off on the parade route down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the White House. The president and first lady emerged from the limousine to walk part of the route hand in hand.

Officials estimate about 800,000 people attended the inauguration, down significantly from 2009, when about 1.8 million people witnessed Mr Obama be sworn in as America's first black president. In the evening, the Obamas attended two inaugural balls in Washington, attended by some 40,000 people.

France and Germany celebrate 50th anniversary

France and Germany are marking the anniversary of a treaty that helped to reconcile the two former foes. The Elysee Treaty was signed by Charles de Gaulle of France and Germany's Konrad Adenauer on January 22nd, 1963. De Gaulle described Europe as "a coach and horses, with Germany the horse and France the coachman". The co-operation between

the two nations has been the foundation stone of the European project. On Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande held talks behind closed doors in Berlin and on Tuesday more than 500 French lawmakers travelled to the German capital for the session with the Bundestag, which was followed by a joint cabinet

dinner and a concert. To celebrate what has been described as a festival of friendship, France and Germany are issuing stamps, coins and other items of memorabilia, while French flags flew beside those of Germany in Berlin. Despite ups and downs in the relationship, Berlin and Paris have been key shapers of the European Union.

However, the two countries remain at odds on several issues, including how to deal with the eurozone crisis. The ongoing crisis in Mali is also likely to test the two countries' relationship. While Paris has deployed troops in the west African nation to halt the advance of Islamist insurgents, Berlin has been reluctant to be drawn deeply into the conflict.

Gang rape trial begins

The trial of five men over the gang rape and murder of a 23year-old woman has begun at a specially convened fast-track court in delhi. If convicted, the men could face the death penalty. The start of the trial was delayed for more than an hour on Monday as defence lawyers argued that it should be open to the media. The judge rejected their request, and adjourned the trial until 24th January, when opening arguments will be heard. The brutal assault on the 23-year-old student has led to nationwide protests against the treatment of women in India. Campaigners have called for tougher rape laws and the government has promised to fast-track future rape cases. legal proceedings in India sometimes involve years of delays. the Algerians had “certainly worked very hard to try and save the lives of people from other countries. This whole incident underlines the scale and ruthlessness of the terrorist threat that we and other nations face. We underline our resolve to deal with that and to defeat such terrorism and murder, working with allies across the world and including North Africa.”

Prime Minister David Cameron warned that the West faces a decades-long struggle against Islamist terrorism in North Africa and that the militants who launched the attack represented a “global threat” that required “a global response”.

When the dust clears and the intelligence is put together the response is likely to be robust. Much has been learned from the conflict in Afghanistan and there is already emerging a determination not to allow the conflict to escalate as it did there.

The episode underlines the dangers sometimes faced by Britons and other nationals working overseas and the great need for vigilance.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has, for very obvious reasons, had to pick his words carefully. He said

If you wanted to illustrate national differences within Europe then the recent horse meat burger scandal in Britain would be a graphic example.

While many people in Europe eat horse meat and think nothing of it, Britain is a nation of horse lovers and for some people eating horse meat would be akin to eating the family’s pet dog. So, it was no surprise when there was a huge outcry after it was discovered burgers being sold in some supermarkets contained horse meat. The Government’s Food Standards Agency has been left rather embarrassed, as it has never carried out tests for horse meat in food sold in Britain. The discovery was made by the Irish authorities, and the Irish like their horses also.

More than a third of beef burger products tested positive for horse DNA. Horse meat ‘burger filler’ from the Netherlands and Spain is being investigated as the likely source. Horse meat would be a quarter of the price of beef and the discovery has left people wondering what else may be going into the food chain without their knowledge.

One supermarket, which sources all its own butchery products in Britain, has taken out advertisements to tell its customers this, but seven leading supermarkets cleared their shelves of frozen beef burgers after the contamination scare hit the headlines.

Manchester United’s lead at the top of English soccer’s Premier League was reduced to five points after they drew 1-1 with Tottenham at a snowy White Hart Lane. Robin van Persie put United ahead but Clint Dempsey struck two minutes into injury time a secure a share of the points for Spurs, who lie fourth in the table after the weekend games.

Manchester City, in second place, beat Fulham on Saturday and thirdplaced Chelsea were involved in an exciting London derby at Stamford Bridge, beating Arsenal 21. Juan Mata and the evergreen Frank Lampard (penalty) scored for Chelsea and Theo Walcott got one for Arsenal.

Queens Park Rangers managed a 1-1 draw with West Ham but remain rooted to the bottom of the table below Reading and Wigan.

GOVERNMENT

Delayed again

PRIME Minister David Cameron will now deliver his long-awaited speech on Britain’s future role in Europe later this week. It had been postponed because of the Algeria hostage crisis. He will set out proposals for a new relationship with the European Union which would be the subject of negotiation prior to a referendum after the next general election. UK

Rescue bid THE music and film industry is behind a rescue deal for collapsed music retailer HMV in Britain as they see the firm’s presence on the high street as vital to the sales of their products.

HMV sells CDs and DVDs and has been hit by the growth of internet and supermarket sales. HMV provides over 4,000 jobs in 223 stores. DVD and games rental firm Blockbuster also announced that it had called in the administrator and was closing a quarter of its 528 stores.

I was very interested to learn of efforts by the British Government to reduce the ongoing risks posed by the Chernobyl nuclear accident, which took place in 1986. The site still poses a threat and the current activity does illustrate the ongoing commitment that is necessary following a disaster of this nature. The UK has contributed over £115-million and has led efforts to encourage donations from other countries to help provide treatment facilities for

radioactive waste and storage for spent nuclear fuel to support the safe decommissioning of reactors. A 150-metre metal arch is to be constructed over the existing shelter on the destroyed nuclear reactor at the site. It will be assembled away from the existing shelter and then rolled into place on rails. It is designed to confine radioactive material and provide protection from rainwater and snow for at least 100 years.

BRITAIN has been suffering a period of bitterly cold weather and snow. A number of London Heathrow flights were cancelled over the weekend and internal travel disrupted. Four people were killed in an avalanche in the Scottish Highlands while walking near Glencoe on Saturday.

One man survived and a woman remains in a critical condition. Snow gave way beneath the walkers and carried them 1,000 feet down the mountain. More on this story on page 9.

4th Glencoe Grandmother gets victim named death sentence

The fourth person killed in an avalanche in the Scottish Highlands has been named by police. Rachel Majumdar, 29, was a doctor working at Harrogate District Hospital in North Yorkshire. She was originally from Merseyside and was most recently living in Leeds, Northern Constabulary said today. The avalanche struck at about 2pm on Saturday as a group of six friends made their descent on Bidean Nam Bian in Glencoe.

PhD students Christopher Bell, 24, and Tom Chesters, 28, and 25year-old junior doctor Una Finnegan were also swept to their deaths as they made their way down the

mountain. A 24-year-old woman from the Durham area, who was seriously hurt in the incident, remains in a critical condition in hospital in Glasgow.

Another survivor said he escaped by leaping from the collapsing sheet of snow and wedging his ice pick into firmer ground. The man, who did not want to be named, said in a statement: "All in the group loved the mountains and are experienced winter walkers. My sincere thanks goes to the members of the public, mountain rescue teams and other emergency services who assisted." The area was recently used in the Bond movie Skyfall.

Lindsay Sandiford, a 56year-old grandmother originally from Redcar, Teesside, has been found guilty of violating the Indonesian island of Bali’s strict drug laws and has been given the death sentence. She was arrested in May 2012 at Bali airport when customs officers found 3.8kg of cocaine worth £1.6m in her luggage. She claimed she had been forced to smuggle the drugs into Bali from Thailand by a criminal gang who had threatened to kill her son if she didn’t transport the drugs. Prosecutors announced in December that they would be recommending a 15-year prison sentence, after she agreed to cooperate in a sting operation in which police swooped on four other suspects alleged to be her accomplices, including Britons Rachel Dougall, Julian Pounder and Paul Beales. Pounder is accused of receiving the drugs in Bali, where cocaine and ecstasy are

often bought and sold between foreign nationals. A verdict is expected in his trial on Wednesday. Delivering Sandiford's verdict, a judge panel headed by Mr Amser Simanjuntak said that Sandiford had damaged the image of Bali as a tourism destination and weakened the government's programme of drug annihilation. "We find Lindsay Sandiford convincingly and legally guilty of importing narcotics. We found no reason to lighten her sentence," said Mr Simanjuntak. In her witness statement, Sandiford said: "I would like to begin by apologising to the Republic of Indonesia and the Indonesian people for my involvement. I would never have become involved in something like this but the lives of my children were in danger and I felt I had to protect them." A local journalist who was in court when the verdict was passed down said: “There is still a long

way to go before an execution can take place. She can appeal to the High Court then the Supreme Court in Jakarta. If she can present new evidence she can have a judicial review. Then there is also the chance of clemency with the President." And Sandiford's defence lawyer, Esra Karo-Karo, said: "She was very shocked. This is unpredicted, she never thought of receiving the death penalty. The judge did not even consider our reason for leniency as we proposed in our defence. We will appeal." At the end of 2011 there were 13 British nationals sentenced to death and awaiting execution, and approximately 40 British prisoners facing charges that may attract the death penalty. Indonesia has 114 prisoners on death row, according to a March 2012 study by Australia's Lowy Institute for International Policy. Five foreigners have been executed since 1998, all for drug crimes, according to the institute.

A third man has been arrested and is being questioned over the murder of an off-duty policeman in Stockport in the early hours of Sunday. Two other men were arrested on Sunday by officers investigating the death of PC Gareth Francis. The latest man to be arrested handed himself into a police station on Sunday night where the 20-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Appeal fails

A former Sunday school teacher's bid to overturn her conviction for murdering the wife of her ex-lover has failed. The Court of Appeal in Belfast refused Hazel Stewart's appeal against her conviction for the murder of Lesley Howell in Coleraine, Co Londonderry, in 1991. Stewart was also found guilty of murdering her policeman husband, Trevor Buchanan, as part of a joint enterprise with her former lover, Colin Howell.

Watchdog targets Breast screening programme successful 'miracle' ads In an attempt to clean up TV screens, the Andalusia Audiovisual Council (CAA) is examining the sale of miracle products and TV fortune-telling slots that have become big business for some channels, accounting for up to 70 per cent of revenue.

The watchdog has referred the clairvoyance programmes – often aired at times when children are watching – to the public prosecutor, and also acted against a number of commercials that promise "miraculous" weight loss. Despite a law prohibiting TV stations from broadcasting ads for products with alleged health benefits, miracle weight loss products are a staple on TV screens in Andalucia. Ads for "Dr Ming's Chinese tea" and

some artichoke-based supplements, which have purifying and detoxifying effects, claim to help people eliminate fat around the waist and lose up to three kilos in a week.

The CAA has ordered local TV station Onda Luz Cádiz to withdraw the Chinese tea ads as illegal advertising, which carries fines of between €100,000 and €500,000. "The TV commercials analysed present Dr Ming's Chinese tea as a product with alleged health benefits or a miracle product, the advertising of which is banned by our legal system," said the CAA, which also considers the ads deceitful, promising a change of size in 20 days. The benefits of the Alcachofa de Laón

artichoke products have also been called into question.

The ad broadcast by Canal Sur attributes slimming properties to the vegetable, which could constitute consumer fraud. "Imagine losing up to three kilos a week," says the commercial, which claims that a nutritional study has proven that this unique vegetable helps to assist the loss of fat. In the board's view, such statements could make consumers believe that the effectiveness of the product was "technically or scientifically corroborated". At the same time, the CAA also considers the ad sexist as it makes "intensive and almost exclusive use of images of women."

Plaza named after Joe Strummer

Punk rocker Joe Strummer is to have a city square named after him in Granada following a Facebook campaign. More than 2,000 residents of Granada, where The Clash frontman became a frequent visitor, signed a petition calling for him to be honoured.

City hall officials have agreed to the proposals and a square in the area is to be renamed Plaza de Joe Strummer. Strummer, who name-checked Granada in The Clash's London Calling album track Spanish Bombs, died in 2002.

The singer first went to the city in the 1970s with Spanish girlfriend Paloma Romero, who went on to drum for punk girl group The Slits under the alias Palmolive. He later became involved with local band 091 – whom he first heard on a jukebox in a

Wanted Camorra man arrested

The Guardia Civil in Mijas have arrested Vittorio Maglione, who belongs to the Napolitan camorra's Ferrara-Cacciapuoti clan and is one of the most wanted men in Italy. He has a 15-year jail sentence pending there on international drug trafficking charges. He eluded the Italian police at the end of last year, when an European arrest warrant was issued for him.

The Carabinieri warned the Guardia Civil that Maglione could be somewhere along the Costa del Sol. After weeks of watching bars and restaurants where suspicious characters were known to hang out, the Guardia spotted him in a luxurious restaurant in Mijas last Saturday. To avoid upsetting the other diners, they waited until he left the restaurant before arresting him. He is now in jail awaiting extradition.

A long way

T I

'll try to answer that because I know a lot of other people think I'm right-wing. Failed revolutionaries often do turn very right-wing while others, like myself, turn on the Left for not living up to our ideals. This is unfair because we all eventually realise that our ideals are impossible to achieve in the short term and we're upset because we know we won't be around in the long term to see them become reality – if ever they do. However, there's hope yet – the men and women who started the trade union movement more than 200 years ago couldn't have envisaged just how powerful the movement would eventually become – nor would they have understood its inevitable decline.

I

think it declined because it achieved the aims of those early dreamers but its leaders ended up falling in love with power, and power corrupts. Look at Mao, Stalin, Fidel Castro, Hitler and, yes, Stalin to see just how absolutely absolute power can corrupt. ake Che Guevara, for example. He described himself as a Communist but he hated the Soviet Union and never missed an opportunity to lash the Russians with his contempt. It would cost him his life, which he probably suspected. Che left Cuba because Fidel was selling himself and his ideals to the Russians in exchange for the millions of dollars he needed to keep his revolution afloat. Che eventually ended up in Bolivia among poor peasants who didn't really understand what the revolution was all about and somebody eventually ratted on him and told the Bolivian security forces where he was holed up. That "somebody" was in fact the Bolivian Communist Party acting on orders from none other than Fidel Castro who in turn was acting on orders from the Soviet Union. It's all written down in a letter Castro sent to former Venezuelan guerrilla leader Douglas Bravo to explain why he did what he did. Douglas refused to show it to me, and I suspect he ended up destroying it to avoid it falling into the hands of people who would be only too delighted to publish it. Che's body was buried in an undisclosed spot to avoid it becoming a sacred site for

here's a million light years between being Spain's answer to Maggie Thatcher and the female version of Che Guevara, but apparently that's the distance I've travelled, according to Mr Bob Mitchell's latest letter. revolutionaries but his remains were eventually found and taken to Cuba for a decent burial. I watched it all on Venezuelan television, wondering how Castro must have been feeling, presiding over the funeral of the man he had betrayed. Just another sad example of the revolution eating its children.

D

ouglas Bravo himself paid me what I consider one of the compliments I most cherish. After one of our invariably heated discussions – we got on very well but frequently differed on how to bring about the revolution – he yelled: “You'll end up just like Fabricio!”

F

abricio Ojeda was a journalist who played an active part in the overthrow of Venezuela's last dictator, Marco Perez Jimenez in 1958. He then entered Congress as a deputy for the centre-left Democratic Republican Movement (URD) which he had helped to found before Perez Jimenez took power in 1952. In June 1962, he renounced his seat, saying he couldn't live an easy life in Caracas while millions of Venezuelans lived in poverty and thousands of men and women were out there trying to bring about a revolution to right that wrong. He joined Douglas Bravo's Armed Forces for National Liberation (FALN) and was captured by the security forces on June 20th, 1966, with his then companion Anayansi Jiménez. The authorities said he committed suicide the following day, but in fact he was beaten to death while Anayansi heard it all from the next cell. I became very friendly with Anayansi – we both worked as translators – and she described it all to me in detail.

W

hat Douglas was saying to me was that, like Fabricio, I was too idealistic and not practical enough to keep out of the hands of the security forces. This was in 1979, Douglas had just been amnestied by the new government of Luis Herrera Campins. He made his first public appearance in his home town of Coro – the oldest city founded by the Spaniards in Venezuela. The event was attended by hundreds of people and we could see the soldiers posted on the roofs of the buildings surrounding the area where the meeting was held. I was the only foreigner there, taking photographs for an article I intended to write about it, and afterwards Douglas commented: "Everybody, including the soldiers, were more interested in you than me."

T

hey were heady days, which is why I find it hard to believe in a bunch of Socialists who thought that introducing "quickie" divorces was more important than equal pay for equal work, one of Socialism's basic tenets.

he scandal surrounding Luis Bárcenas and his accounts in Switzerland took a new twist this past week, throwing the Partido Popular (PP) into one of its deepest crises in recent years. A former PP deputy says that he has first-hand knowledge of cash donations, money under the table, that was delivered in envelopes by Bárcenas, the former party treasurer, and his predecessor Álvaro Lapuerta, to top leaders throughout the years. This stunning revelation was made in a column José Trías Sagnier wrote for El País on Monday. He said that the money stopped flowing on Mariano Rajoy’s orders some time after the now-prime minister took over the PP leadership.

T

he PP wants to come clean; especially now when Trías Sagnier got in a dig by observing that the party has lost its credibility because it continues to ask citizens for more sacrifices when its leaders were getting secret fat cash bonuses. Rajoy has ordered a complete audit of the accounts, including the payrolls of leaders going back to the days when José María Aznar ran the party. He has asked current treasurer Carmen Navarro to carry out the search, and then the results will be given to an independent auditor, who will no doubt have certain ties to the PP, to review the findings. With the weasels put in charge of the hen house, this remedy only goes to raise more suspicions and doesn't do any good to clear the PP name.

T

rías Sagnier, an MP from 1996 to 2000, said later in an interview with EL PAÍS that he didn't know whether the party had been listing these anonymous donations as required by a 1987 law obliging all political organisations to do so for tax and transparency purposes. What he did say was that he saw a lot of leaders getting fat bonuses for expenses and other perks along with their generous salaries. The Socialists changed the party financing law in 2007 and banned all types of anonymous donations to registered parties.

A

reactionary Rajoy has real pickle on his hands. In the first place, Luis Bárcenas, the treasurer and finance manager who served the party for 18 years as a key money man, is not pleased with being left out in the cold by his former PP fellows since his indictment on tax fraud and money laundering charges in the Gürtel corruption case in 2009. The PP even stopped paying his attorneys' fees when things started getting hot. And then things reached boiling point when Swiss prosecutors told Spanish authorities last week that Bárcenas had €22 million stashed away in a secret account. Party sources said many people inside the organisation fear that Bárcenas may turn on them

W

and one day tell a court all he knows.

hat is also clear is that the public will never get to see who made what during the past 20 years going back to when Aznar was party leader. The exact number of payments will never be known. Rajoy now says that he wants an anticorruption pact with all the parties to put this issue to rest once and for all. Corruption is one of the citizens’ biggest concerns, according to recent polls. But this pact won't have any teeth if the government doesn't aim for far-reaching reforms in the court system, which has been nothing more than an antique remnant of the Franco past. Quick measures are needed to make the courts more efficient so that cases, such as Gürtel, the Palau music auditorium kickback scheme and, even Iñaki Urdangarin’s public fraud case, quit idling while defence lawyers file barrages of motions in order to avoid trial. Even ETA members actually never sit in front of a judge’s bench until 10 to 15 years after they commit their terrorist acts. Justice is served slowly in Spain, if indeed at all. Rajoy has a lot of work in front of him, and it is going to take more than just a few questionable audits to instil confidence in our leaders.

Metro tragedy

ocal animal rights groups have denounced Madrid subway officials for preventing them last Thursday from searching and rescuing a greyhound that somehow got trapped in the train tunnels and was eventually found dead over the weekend. According to one of the groups, Animal Justice, metro officials refused to allow them to go into the tunnels to search for the female dog after the subway system closed at 2am. The scared animal was last seen Saturday running between the Sainz de Baranda and Ibiza stations on Line 6. A video of the dog, visibly frightened because of the track noise and oncoming trains, was posted on YouTube. A few security officers can be seen talking through their walkie-talkies with passengers on the platform looking on curiously as the poor animal runs by in the well with a train closing in behind her. It is indeed a sad sight because no one jumped in to try to save the animal. The mangled dog with one leg missing was found dead Sunday by Metro workers. The justicianimal.org website has denounced the subway officials in an extensive news release. This situation should have never occurred. Dogs are living beings too, and their lives when in danger should be

Woman dies after fall in 20 years Funeral Care Spain service snow in UK marked open new office ADVERTISING FEATURE

A young woman walking to her sister's house in the UK’s near-freezing conditions after a night out was found dead in the snow near the front door, it emerged on Monday.

The victim is thought to have slipped in the icy conditions near the house in Deal, Kent, before losing consciousness due to the cold. Bernadette Lee, 25, was found by a dog walker at 7.30am on Sunday morning, and is thought to have been dressed for a night out when she was discovered. Police believe that after heading towards her sister's from a night out drinking, she could have fallen in the snow and been unable to get up. Shocked residents in Deal said today that there was around six inches of snow on the ground the night Bernadette went out. Neighbour Kenneth Mitchell, 69, said: "I looked out my bedroom window on Sunday morning and wondered what on earth was going on. The road was taped off by police, forensics officers

everywhere and an ambulance. It was only later I found out a young woman's body had been found there in the snow. It's just so awful, absolutely tragic. I've no idea what happened, but I do know it was absolutely freezing on Saturday night and you wouldn't have lasted long out there if you'd fallen in the snow. There must have been about six inches of snow out there, it was pretty deep." Bernadette, who is from Deal, was described by friends as "bubbly, chatty" and "a beautiful young woman". More than 1,200 people have "liked" a Facebook page set up in her memory called ''R.I.P The beautiful Bernadette Lucy Lee''. One of the emotional tributes to Ms Lee read: "You were a truly loved girl and you have left a hole in so many people's hearts." Another friend, Rob Butler, said: "An incredible, beautiful and wonderful person who lived life to its fullest. You will be sorely missed. R.I.P Bernadette."

Police officers were called to the scene at 7.30am on Sunday along with a crew from South East Coast Ambulance Service. Bernadette was pronounced dead at the scene and her next of kin have now been informed. Officers are now preparing a report for the coroner ahead of a postmortem examination due to be held later this week. A spokesman for Kent Police said: "The woman's death is not being treated as suspicious but it is unexplained. It is probably a tragic accident where a young woman was on her way home from a night out and didn't quite make it to the address she was staying at. We think she slipped on the snow and couldn't get up and lost consciousness because it was so cold or she had a medical episode. She was staying at her sister's home which wasn't far at all from where she was found collapsed. She had almost made it to where she was staying, which makes it all the more tragic."

Pat and Lionel Fidler received a great surprise when Cudeca President Joan Hunt, together with volunteer colleagues arrived at the Fuengirola Cudeca Hospice Charity Shop, to congratulate Pat and Lionel on completing 20 years as Day Team leaders for two mornings every week. When Pat and Lionel first contacted Joan Hunt early in 1993, the first hospice shop had just opened for two mornings each week.

With their help they were able to extend opening to four mornings, and following the great success of the venture and with the help of many more volunteers, it was soon possible to open for six mornings. A special cake and champagne marked the occasion as Pat and Lionel were presented with a certificate in recognition of their loyal support, as well as flowers and special greetings from their two teams.

First quiz night a huge Have you seen this man? success at Olive Tree Last Friday evening saw the first of what is now to be a monthly Quiz Night at The Olive Tree in Coin.

Even with the early start of 7pm there were seven teams taking part – 36 participants in all paying €2 each to enter – plus there was a raffle at €5 a strip, so the event raised a much needed 154 euros for the equine charity SEARCH while everybody had a great evening’s entertainment.

Quizmaster Alan had tried out the questions on his wife, Sue, and if she could answer them too easily, some of them were changed, thus making it a challenging evening too! (Do you know which is the smallest bone in the body, for example?) Winners of the evening

were a team called “The Old Gits”, pictured, who won a trophy plus four bottles of Cava and some cuddly toys – quite a prize indeed! – and in addition a huge hamper of (for once) very useable food with Jacobs Cream Crackers, bottles of wine, tinned ham, a bottle of Ouzo and half a ton of other goodies. The next quiz at the

Olive Tree is to take place on Friday February 22nd but there is another for SEARCH on Friday 1st February in Villafranco between Coin and Cartama. For more about The Olive Tree call 665 340 306 or 952 452 554 – details of any of their events can be found in their advert on the “Out and About” pages. For SEARCH events call Sue on 660 220 700.

New Boot Sale Where is it??

The article sent to us last week about the new bootsale in Las Lagunas was with the name of a street that doesn't exist, so not much help there!

So, where it is actually located is as follows:

Stand in the street looking at the front entrance of the Euromarket supermarket in Fuengirola (Avda de los Lirios) then turn left to the roundabout and turn right up Calle Fucsia.

At the end, turn left on

to Calle Rio las Pasadas and go along to the next roundabout.

You will see an Eroski City store there and the bootsale is on the roof of the store. Easily found if you get the right information!

The loss of a pet. Part 3 Shock Shock is almost always the first emotion that is experienced. It occurs when the body responds to an occurrence that the mind cannot accept. Physically, the person feels like a mess. Everybody, however, reacts differently to shock – some burst out in tears while some appear untouched. The effects of shock can last from a few hours a few days. During this time, it is important to be lenient towards yourself and the children and to remember that you have been affected by the tragic loss of a family member. It is important not to dismiss the facts and to tone down the signs of grief. Do not attempt to stop your children from crying over their pet. It is important for them to be allowed to express their feelings of pain, and you are to teach them through your own example. It is also important not to listen when somebody utters words such as: “Just a dog!” or “Just buy a new one!”.

Your pet might very well have been “just a dog” to the outside world, but to you and your children it was a very special family member.

Rage

After the initial shock has faded, the next step in the mourning-process is rage. Most people in mourning look for something or someone to blame. It can be the driver of the car, whoever left the gate open or even the veterinary, who couldn’t prevail in saving the dog’s life. Rage is just another way or handling the loss, but it’s very important not to get stuck in this phase. Regardless of your reasons, the rage is not going to bring back your pet. Luck of the Irish Recently a gent from Mijas Costa, originally from Northern Ireland, whilst trying on some trousers at El Cortes Ingles store in Los Boliches became a little concerned about leaving his wallet in his own trousers back in the changing room. So he dropped it into the pocket of the pair he was trying on – just for safety sake you understand – and promptly forgot all about it. The trousers weren’t quite right so he hung them up, gathered his goods and left.

Later at home he had a bit of a shock when he discovered that his wallet, containing all the usual important cards and documents needed to sustain daily life and some 250 euros in cash, was missing. He concluded he might have dropped it when paying for coffee at a local bar earlier, but no they hadn't seen it. Resigned to the loss, 250 euros worse off and still with no new trousers, he put it down to bad luck, at worst theft and that was that. Two weeks later to the

day, another Irish gent, from a bit further south this time, was trying on what he thought was a rather heavy pair of trousers at El Cortes Ingles store in Los Boliches. On inspection he discovered the wallet still resting in the back pocket of the new pair. Honest as the day is long, he called up a number in the wallet and arranged to meet the next day and return it, complete with the full 250 euros cash still in it!

Proposed pensions reforms - how will they affect us?

Last week there was a big flurry of excitement over the proposed reformation plans for UK pensions. I for one went ballistic when I read that, unless I had paid further into the UK pensions system within the last 10 years, tough luck for any increases. So, computer sent to search the net, this is what I found: I phoned the British Consulate where a recorded message told me to phone the pensions advisory service in the UK and the lady there told me that, actually, they hadn’t got a clue whether that was correct or not and all they were doing was keeping an eye on what the BBC was saying about it all! My husband and I had paid our full 30 years, which is all you were required to pay up until now, before we came here 16 years ago. At that time I was also looking forward to my promised pension at age 60. I found out a while ago that I will now not receive my pension until age 66. So at today’s rate of basic pension £107 per week – I have no idea if I’d get the extra bit so let’s stick with the basics – they will be keeping £7,704 of my money over the six years which with the difference between £107 a week and £144 of £37 a week means that it would take just over 208 months to pay me back that money – yep, that’s 17.35 years which would bring me to aged almost 84 before they caught up with what they haven’t given me with the age rise! We might be living longer but, I can tell you that the UK national statistic for 2011 of women dying between age 60 and 66 was 18,215! So I have trawled the www and found this interesting questions and answers list from a company called citywire.co.uk to help clarify the proposals and what they will mean to us – assuming that is that the goalposts aren’t moved yet again before we get there!

Q&A: state pension reform explained:

The government has announced the introduction of a flat-rate state pension, here's what it means for you. By Michelle McGagh, January 15, 2013 at 11:29. The government has announced plans for a new flat-rate state pension that removes means-testing and

which it hopes will provide clarity for everyone saving for their retirement. Since the Beveridge Report plan for the welfare state 70 years ago, Britain’s demographics have changed dramatically. In the 1940s a minority of men could expect to live to 65 whereas 36% of people born in 2013 are expected to live to 100, according to the Office for National Statistics. Improving life expectancy has put a strain on the UK state pension system that successive governments have tried to ease with reams of legislation, leading to a complex, means-tested pension system. Now the coalition has published its white paper, 'The singletier pension: a simple foundation for saving', which it hopes will make the system fairer and easier to understand. What changes are coming in? The single-tier pension will be implemented in April 2017 ‘at the earliest’. It will see pensioners who qualify receive a £144-a-week state pension. This is an increase from the £142.70 basic level of means-tested pension currently available for a single pensioner. The means-testing element of the state pension will be removed completely, instead national insurance contributions (NICs) will be calculated to determine whether you qualify for the £144 pension.

How do I know if I qualify? Anyone who has 35 years of qualifying NICs or credits for the full amount will receive the £144-a-week state pension. This means that anyone who works for 35 years will qualify. There will be a minimum qualifying period of between seven and 10 years to receive anything from the state. Those with fewer than 35 years but more than 10 will receive a smaller single-tier amount. Will it always be £144-aweek? No, the state pension keeps increasing as the cost of living keeps increasing. In

2011 the government introduced the ‘triple lock’ guarantee for pensions which ensures the state pension will increase at the highest of either growth in prices, average earnings or 2.5%. The paper has confirmed that the triple lock will stay in place. Whatever the rate of state pension on offer you will need to have 35 years qualifying NICs in order to receive the full amount.

When will I get my pension? The state pension age is on the rise. It is set to increase a year to 66 by October 2020, and to 67 between 2026 and 2028. The equalisation in state pension age between men and women will also be complete in November 2018 to bring women’s retirement in line with men’s. However, the state pension age is likely to rise again as the government has said it will link it to longevity. We are all living longer which has led to predictions that future generations won’t receive their state pension until age 70. In the paper the government said it will carry out a review of the state pension age every five years ‘based around the principle that people should maintain a specific proportion of adult life receiving the state pension’. The first review of the state pension age will take place in the next Parliament. What if I am contracted out? Contracting out is a tricky business. The current state pension is made up of several parts; although the main components are the basic state pension and the additional state pension, also known as the second state pension (S2P). The amount you get from the additional state pension, or S2P, depends on the contributions you make into it through your NICs. Employees were given the option of ‘contracting out’ of S2P and redirecting the money into a private or workplace pension. By contracting out,

employees and the employer paid a reduced NI rate because the employee would not benefit from S2P. Instead they benefited from extra money in their private or workplace pension to replace the money lost from not contributing to S2P; this money is known as protected rights. Under the new rules S2P will be abolished after the implementation of the single-tier pension as contracting out was already abolished in April 2012. Around 80% of people have contracted out of the S2P at some point in their careers but they will be brought fully back into the state system and will begin paying full NICs – which is the increase equivalent to 1.4% of relevant earnings. Although many people who are contracted out will begrudge the government increasing their NI, they will recoup the extra payments they make. The government said ‘the vast majority of those who pay a higher rate of NI as a result of the ending of contracting out will be able to get extra state pension for years worked or credited after the single-tier pension is implemented’.

So there will still be different levels of pension? Just because there is a flat rate of £144-a-week it doesn’t mean that everyone will get that. Most people of working age will have made NICs before the implementation of the single-tier pension so the government has had to put a transition process in place. Everyone who has worked will have a ‘foundation amount’ – basically an amount calculated on what NICs you have paid to date. The entitlement to the state pension will be built up from this foundation amount, adding £4.11 to the pension for every year worked after implementation until it reaches £144. However, some people who have already accumulated a ‘foundation amount’ of over £144 will be entitled to a higher state pension. People will fall into four

groups when the implementation happens: 1. Those with a foundation amount equal to £144, who have paid in for 35 years and not been contracted out. 2. Those with less than the full level of the single-tier pension, such as young people with few qualifying working years or older people who have spent years contracted out. These people are able to amass an extra £4.11 to foundation amount for each year worked until they hit £144. 3. Those with more than £144, likely to be older people with many working years behind them who did not contract out of S2P. They will receive the difference between the foundation amount and £144 as an extra weekly payment. 4. Those with no NI record like those who have not started working yet. They will benefit from going straight into the new system. What if I am selfemployed? The self-employed benefit from the pension reform. Previously, NICs paid by the self-employed didn’t count towards the state pension, meaning they received a lower state pension in retirement. However, under the new rules all NICs will be treated equally in the calculation of the single-tier pensions.

Are the changes good? Yes, broadly. The government hopes to encourage people to save for their own retirement by setting out just what they will get from the state. By providing a solid base pension not be swayed by means-testing it is hoped people will be encouraged to plan for their old age. Pensions minister Steve Webb said: ‘The current state pension system is too complicated and leaves millions of people needing means-tested top-ups. We can do better. Our simple, single tier pension will provide a decent, solid foundation for new pensioners in an otherwise less certain world, ensuring it pays to save.’ It is also good news for

many women who have tended to miss out on a full state pension. Secretary of state for work and pensions Iain Duncan Smith said: ‘This reform is good news for women who for too long have been effectively punished by the current system. The single tier will mean that more women can get a full state pension in their own right and stop this shameful situation where they are let down by the system when it comes to retirement because they have taken time out to care for their family.’ Who doesn’t benefit? Not everyone has welcomed the single-tier state pension. The National Pensioners’ Convention has labelled it a ‘con trick’ for future generations who will be asked to contribute more for longer and receive less. Under the current rules you can pay 30 years NICs and get the full basic and S2P of around £150 a week but under the new rules you work for 35 years and receive £144 a week. It also complained that existing pensioners are not included in the reforms. They are left with the complicated old means-tested pension credit system. At the moment pensioners can get £107-aweek minus means-testing, which increases to £142.70 with a means-tested pension credit. Unfortunately not all pensioners apply for the pension credit, there are 1.8 million people who are eligible who don’t receive it. Wealthy people are also disadvantaged by the system. A higher earner at the moment can get a S2P worth up to £150-a-week on top of the state pension but that will be scrapped and they will no longer have the chance to build up this additional amount.

So, that’s the end of the Q&A list and I hope it helps clear up some questions for you. We at The News will be keeping an eye on any new information that comes out but, at the moment these proposals haven’t been passed into law yet and could well change. Kym Wickham

A new exhibition to enjoy The Tourist Information Centre of Grazalema has the pleasure of inviting you to the inauguration of 'Nature Before Your Eyes' a portrayal of the flora and fauna of the Sierra de Grazalema. A photographic exhibition of beautifully detailed images that display the natural world of the Sierra de Grazalema. We invite you to enjoy the wonderful colours and forms, look closer for the scientific identifications and read some of the life cycle details written in both Spanish and English.

This large selection of images is only part of a project created by Sue Eatock and Clive Muir to study plants and wildlife of the Sierra de Grazalema, collating that information, species by species, with photographs and bilingual text in an easy to appreciate format. Well, the printing is almost finished ... For almost three years now, every six weeks, there have been exhibitions from artists, photographers and sculptors here in my tourist office in Grazalema. I have had the privilege of hosting some of the finest and most

professional people in the Sierra of CĂĄdiz, AndalucĂa and Spain.

I always wanted an exhibition of the Fauna and Flora of the Sierra de Grazalema but something different, something a bit more in depth. And who can provide that? My very best friend Sue Eatock.

Between us we have created an exhibition, that in my opinion has never been done before. Many images have in-depth information. It's not about pretty pictures (although the fact is they are stunning images), it's about learning, it's about respect and protection of this wonderful part of Spain we now call our home.

All printing has been done here in my office on a canon ix6550 on matte paper. Don't expect fancy frames because there aren't any ... nervous? absolutely!!!

This Saturday, the 26th of January 2013 at 12pm will see the culmination of Sue's and Clive's work over the last 8 years. We could not have done it without help from many, very talented people. Translators, photographers and friends. All are here to be seen on the 26th ... Come to see the best photographic exhibition of Grazalema wildlife that has ever been printed and I promise that you won't be disappointed.

Well done Sue, and thank you to all who have supported Sue and myself over the years – you know who you are!

You will also see demonstrations from Ara Pavón on the antique and triangular looms, as well as Alicia on the potter’s wheel – fancy throwing a pot?

Outside (weather permitting) Eva will be organising a bird-watching session to see how many species we can spot in just one day. The usual wines and bread and cheese will be on offer and, of course, Clive

Audition Notice - join the greats in Dial M for Murder Dial M for Murder is a 1954 American thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Ray Milland, Grace Kelly, and Robert Cummings. The movie was adapted from a successful stage play by Frederick Knott, and was released by the Warner Bros. studio.

The screenplay and the stage play on which it was based were both written by English playwright Frederick Knott, whose work often focused on women who innocently become the potential victims of sinister plots. The play premiered in 1952 on BBC television, before being performed on the stage in the same year in London's West End in June, and then New York's Broadway in October. The single setting in the stage play is the livingroom of the Wendices' flat in London (61A Charrington Gardens, Maida Vale). Hitchcock's film adds a second setting in a gentleman's club, the well of a staircase, a few views of the street outside, and a stylised courtroom montage. Having seen the play on Broadway, Cary Grant was keen to play the role of Tony Wendice, but studio chiefs did not feel

the public would accept him as a man who arranges to have his wife murdered.

In June 2008, the American Film Institute revealed its "Ten Top Ten" list –the best ten films in ten "classic" American film genre – after polling over 1,500 people from the creative community. Dial M for Murder was ranked the ninth best film in the mystery genre.

Auditions for the Alfred Hitchcock thriller are being held on Saturday February 9th from 12 noon until 2pm. This version of the play

Loosely based on the 1966 spaghetti Western Django this is Quentin Tarantino's homage to the genre - with some blaxploitation a la Jackie Brown, and ruthless revenge a la Inglourious Basterds added to the heady and violent mix.

It's set two years before the American Civil War and Django (Foxx) is bought off a chain gang boss by bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Waltz), who reckons the slave will be

Their quest brings them to evil Calvin Candie (DiCaprio) the owner of the infamous plantation Candyland and his malevolent slave-butler Stephen (Samuel L Jackson). March 21st April 19th

TAURUS

Right now things seem ‘as clear as a bell’ and you know what means the most to you, what is worth fighting for and what isn’t. The road you are on is deeply meaningful and you will be mustering up the courage to reach into unchartered territory. All you have to do is rise to this brave occasion and the world is your oyster. If there is a job to be done, get to it and do the best you can. By the weekend socially this will be a great time for mixing and meeting others.

You are about to have some sort of firm evidence to verify that your well planned travels were wise and worth the energetic investment. Contracts or binding agreements are featured and you are placing yourself in business dealings that could influence your future. Conversations about the future and your role within a personal relationship encourage certain things to happen. You will for the first time be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

April 20th May 20th

GEMINI

The key to success this week is to remain cool, calm and collected regardless of what others may think or say. You may have to put that extra concentration in on the things you are doing. If you ignore the crowd and follow your instincts then these could be days of brilliance for you when your personality will sparkle and shine like never before. All this sensual energy gives your love life a boost – prepare to get intimate.

May 21st June 21st

CANCER

Finding yourself on the same page as others could prove challenging this week, but if you give a little, you will probably find that they will too and all will be water under the bridge. You could feel slightly rebellious this week but this will help you to change and take control of how things go and flow. A sense of certainty is strengthening your emotional backbone and it will feel like a great wave of relief combined with support.

LEO July 23rd August 22nd

VIRGO

You are being given the opportunity to see beyond the tricks and manipulations others use to get attention from you. You have tried to be all things to all people and that has not worked out very well, others just automatically assume you would run around after them – but if you need any help or assistance then they are nowhere to be seen. Things are changing, it is time to have more fun, to take the lead and not to let another wrap you around their finger.

LIBRA

When you are emotionally grounded and balanced you are well able to negotiate with ease and manage harmonious relations with others. Lately you could have been feeling divided and far from united, either inwardly or outwardly. Perhaps you have given your power over to someone who is September 23rd - undeserving of so much of your pure energy. Emotional levity is the only way through now, be ready to communicate in order to get your needs met. October 22nd

SCORPIO October 23rd November 21st

You tend to be sceptically safe by nature, only showing your cards if someone shows you theirs first, but this week it is essential that you speak freely and deeply with those whom you trust the most. The more you share, the greater relief you feel as you release a burden and recognise certain connections are taking on new levels of commitment and understanding. What you will experience is a softening of your sharpest edges, followed by a serious need to speak your heart as well as your peace.

make you feel unwell. To integrate your truth into your life will keep you stable and your conscience clear and your needs met. It will not be long before it is all systems go again as your ruler is set to turn in direct motion. Personal finances are highlighted and with lady luck on your side then purchases are likely to be profitable. This will be a terrific time for putting ideas and plans into action, it is all brewing.

Some connections are due to evolve and others will fade away, it all depends on if they are still serving you and your growth. Some things that no longer support your lifestyle will be eliminated and others will grow. You will want to do something that moves you at your core particularly when it comes to your vocation in life, you wish to feel connection to some higher purpose and you feel it strongly right now.

How much do you believe in yourself? For this holds the key to your confidence and your determination. Recently you may have been experiencing a high degree of escapism, not quite yet ready to deal with all that you know could be required of you. Before you really take off this year there is a need to take care of some emotional loose ends, something from the past needs to be resolved so that you feel that you can freely move on. You will be beginning to see how elements of your past needed to happen so that they bought you to this place in time. Be prepared for changes and for past elements to resurface as well, there are unexpected things waiting to happen. You could run into obstacles but it is important not to give up easily, it really depends on how determined you are to see something through. Your powers of observation and intuition will guide you – be ready to take action.

POCO A POCO Como (Part 2)

SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

There is a drama that just keeps going round and round, connecting your past with your future, you may feel as though you are back to the same place that you started at. The truth of the matter is that you are not where you were – it just feels that way. You have covered considerable ground but the same old feelings keep rising up and igniting emotions. Practical ways to proceed will highlight your road shortly and allow you to rise above where you have found yourself stuck.

...you don’t have to be a chef!

Two weeks ago we looked at some of the common uses of the word como which crops up in many different circumstances. It can mean a variety of things and the meaning will generally be made clear by the context. Como can mean I eat. Como mucha fruta - I eat a lot of fruit No como mucha carne - I don't eat a lot of meat.

Como can mean like Él lo hace como su padre - He does it like his father

You may hear the expression Es como un pez en agua. This means he/she is like a fish in water.

Obviously this means someone is extremely comfortable in his or her circumstances. Interesting that we have exactly the opposite image (like a fish out of water) in English to show the opposite idea. Como can also mean since or as Como no tenía dinero - As he didn't have any money Como estaba lloviendo - as it was raining.

If you ask the question ¿Cómo es el niño? you are asking for a description of the child. If you ask ¿Cómo está el niño? you are asking about the child's health. ¿A cómo.....? Means How much....? ¿A cómo son las peras? - How much are the pears? ¿A cómo es un kilo de melocotones? - How much is a kilo of peaches?

And if you want the Spanish equivalent of saying that it is like carrying coals to Newcastle the expression is, Es como llevar hierro a Vizcaya. Viscaya is Biscay (as in the Bay of Biscay) and is in the Basque country where iron (hierro) comes from, so the Spanish equivalent is - It is like carrying iron to Biscay. Hasta la próxima. Valerie

Legally binding mercury Smoking ban reduces rules agreed on childhood asthma Delegates from more than 140 countries have agreed on a set of legally binding measures to curb mercury pollution, at UN talks in Geneva, approving measures to control the use of the highly toxic metal in order to reduce the amount of mercury released into the environment. Mercury can produce a range of adverse human health effects, including permanent damage to the nervous system.

The deal was agreed after all-night talks last Friday. UN Environment Programme executive director Achim Steiner said on Saturday: "Nations have today laid the foundations for a global response to a pollutant whose notoriety has been recognised for well over a century." He added: "Everyone in the world stands to benefit, in

particular the workers and families of small-scale gold miners, the peoples of the Arctic and this generation of mothers and babies and the generations to come."

The rules, known as the Minamata Convention and named after the Japanese town that experienced one of the world's worst cases of mercury poisoning, will regulate a range of areas, including the supply of and trade in mercury; the use of mercury in products and industrial processes; the measures to be taken to reduce emissions from artisanal and small-scale gold mining, and the measures to be taken to reduce emissions from power plants and metals production facilities. Mercury – a heavy, silvery white metal – is a liquid at room temperature and can evaporate easily. Within the environment, it is

found in cinnabar deposits. It is also found in natural forms in a range of other rocks, including limestone and coal. Mercury can be released into the environment through a number of industrial processes including mining, metal and cement production, and the burning of fossil fuels. Once emitted, it persists in the environment for a long time – circulating through air, water, soil and living organisms – and can be dispersed over vast distances. As a result of rapid industrialisation, South-East Asia was the largest regional emitter and accounted for almost half of the element's annual global emissions. Campaign group Zero Mercury Working Group co-coordinator Michael Bender called the global deal a "major accomplishment". Advertorial

To Gym or not to Gym

Hi everyone, let me introduce myself, my name is Don and I have been in Spain for the past 10 years at Physique Gym. I have been in the health and fitness industry for the last 35 years.

I have competed in triathlons and marathons and over the years have trained a very diverse clientele ranging from the Fijian rugby union squad to pro boxers, actors and even the occasional page 3 girl and have had a gym on the coast for seven years.

So that’s a bit about me and my credentials to be talking to you about your fitness. So what I am going to be doing in this occasional series in The

News is to give advice on various aspects of health and fitness which I hope will help you to lead a happy and healthy life.

This is the time of year when people decide to “Get Fit” and lose weight after the holiday excesses. First we must put the record straight – there is no quick fix, pill or vibro pad, lotion or cream only application. If you truly want to get fit and lose weight you should seek advice from someone who is qualified and has experience in the fitness industry, understands people’s needs and aspirations and will help them achieve their goals.

Now this month’s tip. If you are going to join a gym please DON’T sign up for a long-term contract as you can’t be sure how you will get along with the gym, or your situation may change

so don’t commit to too much to start with or it could cost you. Next time – How to get fit and in shape with the Zumba. By Don DeNugere Physique Gym

There was a sharp fall in the number of children admitted to hospital with severe asthma after smoke-free legislation was introduced in England, according to researchers at Imperial College in London after looking at NHS figures going back to April 2002. They found that the number of children admitted to hospital with severe asthma attacks was rising by more than 2% a year before the restrictions were introduced in July 2007. Taking that into account, they calculated the fall in admissions in the next 12 months was 12 per cent, and a further 3 per cent in each of the following two years. They said over the threeyear period, this was equivalent of about 6,800 admissions. The fall was seen among boys and girls of all ages, across wealthy and deprived neighbourhoods, in cities and in rural areas.

Before the smoke-free law was introduced, debate on the legislation centred on protection of bar workers from passive smoke. At the time many critics said smokers would respond by lighting up more at home – harming the health of their families. But the researchers said they had

Physique Gym

found growing evidence that more people are insisting on smoke-free homes.

They said the legislation has prompted unexpected, but very welcome, changes in behaviour: "We increasingly think it's because people are adopting smoke-free homes when these smokefree laws are introduced and this is because they see the benefits of smokefree laws in public places such as restaurants and they increasingly want to adopt them in their home. This benefits children because they're less likely to be exposed to second hand smoke." Their findings reinforce evidence on the impact of smokefree legislation from studies in North America and Scotland, which also

showed a fall in hospital admissions for children with severe asthma attacks. The law in England has also resulted in fewer admissions for heart attack.

A spokesman for the health charity, Asthma UK, welcomed the findings: "This is something we campaigned for. We have long known that smoking and second hand smoke are harmful – they not only trigger asthma attacks which put children in hospital but can even cause them to develop the condition." He added that the need now was to do more to prevent children and young people from taking up smoking, and repeated the charity's call for the introduction of plain packaging for all tobacco products.

From Wayne Rooney and co, is this the final bike experience or just a bit more bling?

The ultimate present for your biker babe?

… and it’ll only cost you a few grand that will be going to charity so ... worth it! The unique 2012 Lauge Jenson diamond-encrusted motorcycle designed by Wayne Rooney will go under the hammer at the Bonhams auction of Sports Memorabilia in Chester, UK, next month, where it is expected to realise between £40,000 and £60,000 for children’s charity KidsAid.

The cruiser-style machine, designed by the world-famous striker and custom-made by the Danish motorcycle manufacturer will be auctioned on Wednesday 20th February, with 100 per cent of the sale amount going to the Danish charitable foundation that helps young people affected by illness. The motorcycle incorporates a number of special features designed by Rooney himself.

These include:

“It’s only a commercial” X Factor does it again

Film director and restaurant critic Michael Winner has died aged 77 on Monday at his home in Kensington, London, where he was being nursed by his wife, Geraldine who said in a statement: "Michael was a wonderful man, brilliant, funny and generous. A light has gone out in my life." Last summer, Winner revealed that liver specialists had given him 18 months to live. Born in Hampstead, London in 1935 he started out as a journalist before joining Motion Limited as an editor in the 1950s.

His early British films ranged from dramas, such as ‘The Games’ to comedies like ‘The System’, with regular star Oliver Reed. It was World War II adventure ‘Hannibal Brooks’, which also starred Reed as a soldier attempting to transport an elephant through war-torn Europe, that brought him to the attention of Hollywood. Winner could boast more than 30 films on his CV.

The X Factor is in trouble again and this time it’s with the TV watchdog Ofcom who say that the show breached the broadcasting code by giving undue prominence to the hotel used by contestants.

His big hit in Hollywood was of course ‘Death Wish’, with Charles Bronson starring as a vigilante who goes on the rampage after muggers kill his wife and sexually assault his daughter. The film was criticised for its violence, but it was huge success, and Winner would eventually direct two sequels. He directed many of the biggest stars of the 70s and 80s, such as Sophia Loren (in 'Firepower'), Marlon Brando ('Nightcomers') and Michael Caine and Roger Moore in 'Bullseye!'.

However in the 1990s his directing career took a back step to his newspaper columns, most famously his scathing restaurant reviews in 'Winner's Dinners' for The Sunday

Times. Feared by restaurants throughout the land, Winner’s comments could make or break a restaurant, such were their popularity at the time. He also became famous to a whole new audience thanks to his hugely popular adverts for insurance company Esure, featuring the immortal catchphrase: 'Calm down dear, it's only a commercial".

The report said the show's production company paid the hotel "a reduced rate" for rooms and services but did not guarantee it coverage and show bosses said shots of the hotel's exterior were "editorially justified" and part of "the conventional visual grammar of television".

But Ofcom said it found "the overall number of references to be excessive" and "therefore judged that there was insufficient editorial justification for

the repeated references to the hotel during the programme. Ofcom concluded that the cumulative effect of these references resulted in the programme as a whole giving undue prominence to the hotel."

The show has courted controversy before – its 2010 final which featured Christina Aguilera and her backing dancers in a racy routine was described by Ofcom as being "at the very margin of acceptability". The "sexualised" prewatershed scenes, shown at the end of the seventh series, sparked 2,868 complaints to the media regulator. No doubt Mr Cowell will say that “any publicity is good publicity”.

La Carihuela

This is definitely my last letter regarding Muriel Pilkington, but as she is castigating the man who saved my life I must reply. I am 93 years of age and I go back to the 39-45 war as I was part of it. We had retreated from Dunkirk and were all waiting for the imminent invasion by Hitler. I was a member of the Communist Party so I knew I did not have long to live because Hitler made the extermination of the Communists his first priority, not the Jews – this was the order of things, first the Communists then the Socialists, trade unionists, then the Jews, gypsies, gays, etc. I was working in a munitions factory and they formed the LDV (local defence volunteers) then

called the Home Guard, now called Dad's Army. We had no guns or ammunition and I was told to put a pick-axe through the German tank's chain track as it passed – where I was to get the pick-axe from I do not know, and I am sure the Germans would let me!! Anyway, we were all waiting for the German invasion when Hitler made his greatest mistake – he decided to invade Russia first, and Joe Stalin, the Red Army and 30 million Russians laid down their lives to stop and defeat him, thus saving millions of British lives. So thank you, Uncle Joe, that I am still alive today. And a second letter received from Bob Mitchell reads: After reading about Muriel Pilkington's courageous

Luke Croll I was troubled to see the article on page 15 of today’s (last week’s) edition regarding PIN numbers, in which it was stated that entering a PIN number in reverse would warn the card company of a problem and the company would block future transactions. This is an urban legend, as can be seen by doing a search online, e.g.:

experiences with the Venezuelan Revolutionary Party I take back all I have said about her being Spain's Mrs Thatcher, and to me now she is Spain's Mrs Che (Guevara). I have been 80 years in the Communist Party and never had any part in any revolution (although I did volunteer in 1937 to join the International Brigade and fight against Fascist Franco in Spain, but at 17 years of age I was too young) so I admire Muriel for what she did and now view her no longer with contempt but with respect, but how can she, with such a past, be proud of being such an anti-Socialist journalist I cannot understand. Muriel Pilkington has replied to the letters in her column on page 12.

Editor says: Sounds like a good idea though. I had heard that if you reversed the last two numbers, that would work but that, too, unfortunately was a myth. I wonder if the banks could implement something like this to keep us all a bit safer?

Leighton Curtis email Re: Mr R.G Waugh’s letter about Winter Fuel Allowance, I cannot understand for the life of me, why the British feel they are entitled to the winter fuel payments. Surely if they live over here then they can afford not to claim it. We ask why the country is in such a mess, well, I think you have your answer. We all moan about immigrants getting what they want when they get to the UK and milking the system yet what are the expats doing? Exactly the same thing. We do not claim even our children’s family allowance yet it seems many expats do, this is also so wrong. You choose to leave

Britain, you choose to live here, then you choose to lose any benefits from the UK. It is disgraceful that people living here feel they are entitled to it. If you want the WFA then move back to the UK. I know this letter will prove very unpopular but at the end of the day it needs to be said. Because we are British we feel we are entitled to claim from the British government. Well, wake up people and smell the coffee! You shouldn’t be allowed to claim anything and if you do need to claim to make ends meet then maybe you should think about moving back to the UK.

January Jinx

January seems to be very unlucky for NASA as next week marks the anniversary of their three most tragic events.

A

On January 27th 1967 astronauts Virgil ‘Gus’ Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee were simulating the launch of the very first Apollo rocket on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral in Florida. Apollo 1 was to be the first flight of the Saturn V rocket that would eventually take astronauts to the Moon. us Grissom (40) had been the second American into space in his Liberty Bell spacecraft back in 1961 and was probably destined to be the first to land on the Moon – although a certain amount of controversy surrounded his return to Earth when inexplicably the hatch to Liberty Bell blew open while the capsule was being recovered from the Ocean. Water flooded into the craft almost drowning Grissom and dragging the rescue helicopter under the waves. It was rumoured that Grissom had panicked and blew the hatch himself. d White (36) had become the first American to ‘walk’ in space on June 3rd 1965 when he opened the door of his two-man capsule Gemini 4 and floated out. Even though he was travelling at over 17,000mph because there is no air resistance in space it was found to be quite ‘simple’ to step outside the spacecraft. Space walking would become essential in virtually all of the manned space flights and even now astronauts routinely step outside and carry out repairs to the International Space Station. oger Chaffee (31) was the rookie on board Apollo 1 this was to have been his first flight into space. But in their haste to reach the Moon before the end of the decade NASA had made some vital mistakes. In the oxygen rich environment inside the Apollo 1 capsule a spark believed to have been caused by a bare cable beneath Grissom’s seat caused a fire inside the capsule. An inferno ensued and all three astronauts were killed. nly 19 years later on January 28th 1986 NASA was now proudly displaying their re-usable Space Shuttle. So confident were they in its use that they were now ready to send a schoolteacher into space. Christa McAuliffe (37) was a high school teacher from New Hampshire who had been selected from thousands of applicants to join the crew of Challenger. ut after the launch of Challenger had been delayed four times and the rocket had sat on the launch pad since January 22nd the temperature in Florida had plummeted to below freezing point. Engineers raised concern

G E R

O B

about launching in such cold conditions but as this was such an important flight with the world and President Reagan watching closely the pressure was on to go ahead and launch. eventy-three seconds after lift-off NASA instructed Challenger to increase power and ‘go at throttle up’. A rubber ‘O’ ring seal in the right hand solid rocket booster had become perished in the cold air and allowed the burning gases to escape towards the main fuel tank of Challenger. The Shuttle exploded killing all seven crew members. The world watched live TV pictures as the two solid rocket boosters became detached from the shuttle creating one of the most iconic images of the twentieth century. The Space Shuttle fleet was grounded for almost three years following Challenger but after a redesign the Shuttles began flying again. en years ago, on February 1st 2003 the Space Shuttle Colombia was due to return to Earth after a successful trip to the International Space Station. What the seven astronauts on board didn’t know was that just after launch on January 16th a piece of insulating foam the size of a brief case had become detached from the rocket and had smashed into the left wing of Colombia creating hole. he underside of the belly and wings of a Shuttle are covered in heat resistant tiles designed to protect the craft from the intense heat created on re-entry. The hole in the wing had weakened this protection and allowed hot plasma to enter the wing. As soon as Colombia began its re-entry it was doomed. Spectators across a wide stretch of the USA from Texas to Louisiana watched in disbelief as Colombia resembled a fireball streaking across the sky. All seven astronauts were killed.

Spanish bank close to deal with Chrysler Chrysler Group LLC is close to a deal that would make Spain's Banco Santander its in-house financing arm, which would be called Chrysler Capital. The deal could be finalised in the next few weeks. According to a report in the Wall St Journal.Chrysler declined to comment on the report. If the deal is signed, Spain's largest bank would replace Ally Financial Inc., a U.S. auto lender that is majority owned by the U.S. government.

Record exports lift UK Ford production at Belgium plant remains at a standstill car production in 2012 Last year British car production rose to its highest level since 2007, and experts see a steady rise in output for years to come, thanks to export markets.

Britain produced a total of 1.46 million vehicles in 2012, up 9 percent on 2011, with 1.21 million of those sold abroad, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said today.

December's car output climbed to 101,740 vehicles, up 6.2 percent on the previous year. "The outlook for 2013 remains positive, with demand in many fastergrowing global markets offsetting the continued weakness in European economies," SMMT CEO Paul Everitt said in a release.

Two million units?

The SMMT said that 50 percent of Britain's exports went outside the European Union. If demand outside Europe continues to rise, some industry watchers believe that UK production could increase nearly 40 percent in the next four years. The

country's largely foreignowned car industry has been one of the few bright spots in the British economy, which needs all the help it can get to avoid a third period of contraction since the 2008 financial crisis.

New Jobs at JLR

On Sunday, Jaguar Land Rover, owned by India's Tata Motors, said that it plans to create 800 jobs at its Solihull factory in the Midlands to help it to meet rising demand for its premium cars in China and elsewhere. For the first time, demand from

China outstripped that of British carmaker JLR's home market, with sales in China in 2012 rising more than 70 percent to 71,940 cars. JLR, said on Sunday that total global sales rose 30 percent to over 350,000 vehicles, and earlier this month said that its outlook for 2013 was positive after UK vehicle sales rose almost 20 percent in 2012. Its next biggest markets are the U.S., Russia and Germany. The expansion at the Solihull plant would support the introduction of new models in 2013, the company said.

An agreement between Ford and unions approved by workers a week ago failed to result in a resumption of auto assembly after protesters blocked an adjacent supplier area, cutting off the flow of parts, said Ford spokesman Adrian Schmitz.

"We have an agreement with unions and are determined to implement that agreement to restart work at Genk," Schmitz said. He added “with the factory closed, Ford is

Ford hasn't shipped a vehicle from Genk since saying on October 24th that the plant will shut for good in 2014, Mark Truby, another Ford of Europe spokesman, said.

She went on to add that the officials were there for meetings with representatives of four Ford suppliers. The mayor of Genk intervened and defused the situation without police action. No threats were made.

(not normally necessary in Spain) while Chairman Qasim Shaikh's Bentley made stately progress up to Benalmadena Pueblo disdaining the weather. Members David and Diane Dewhirst had organised a great programme for the day, luckily not dependent on sunshine, starting with a guided visit to the Butterfly Park, followed by a presentation in the Buddhist Stupa. Lunch was provided at a restaurant in the centre of the pueblo while the local police looked after the cars.

Earlier in the month the Club, being officially registered with the Junta de Andalucia, had held their AGM and presented a full programme for the rest of the year. Next month members are hoping that surely the gods will be kinder as the February run is designed to enjoy the countryside with its spectacular displays of almond blossom. C.O.G.S. First New Year’s The Mijas Masters 2013 outing at Calanova. With the new year’s committee and captain in place we made the short trip to Calanova. The course was in very good condition as always and there were obvious signs of improvements that had been carried out. The staff at Calanova always make you very welcome on your arrival there. Our thanks must go again to Manolo Fernandez the director of the club for his assistance again in booking some of our venues for the coming year. On the first tee we had some fun with our newly installed captain Joe King, as the photograph abive shows. The results were as follows: The longest drive on hole 11 was won by Andy Macfarlane. Nearest the pin on hole 8 was won by John Rouse (one of our new members this year, welcome John). We have another new member this

year too, Chris Gardner, a warm welcome to you from all of us. Nearest the pin in two shots on hole 12 was won by Dave Haworth. We introduced a new competition this year, the in the hole in two shots on any hole. This was not claimed. The team prize with 99 points was claimed by Adam Robinson, Nick Carwood, John Bamber, (our new treasurer) and Dave Haworth. In third place with 29 points was Dave Haworth, in second place with 31 points on count back was Geoff Heading and in first place also with 31 points was Andy Macfarlane. Never mind Andy cut again. In last place and the winner of the wooden spoon was Phil Beardmore. Phil, we all see you are trying so hard and it will come alright soon, but you take the heat off me! We as always made the

journey back to Lainey’s bar for the presentation, and we would like to thank Elaine and the staff for the nibbles they supplied and putting up with us. Well another season under way, with as I said, some new faces on the committee. All the members are always happy to see any new players that would like to join us. The sign-up sheet, along with the relevant phone numbers, can be found on our notice board in Lainey’s Bar.

All the members wish Joe King our captain this year, a memorable and an enjoyable experience and thanks to Andy Macfarlane our secretary and John Bamber our treasurer for all their efforts in the organisation of the event. Nig Bowler. Chairman.

Wayne’s weekly Poker Tips

Playing connectors, suited or not, can be profitable if you hit the flop hard. I like 76 or 78 off suite or not because remember suited cards only increase your winning chances by about 4% and a dry board will pay better than a flushy board. If the pot is uncontested raise pre flop because if we miss and A/K hits the board we can represent this hand because we raised pre flop and the story adds up!

If you are raised in front of you I don't mind a call here because again if we hit the flop hard we have a good chance of action and a nice pot. However never ever call 3 and 4 bets with these hands unless you are pot committed or have very good pot odds to call. If you are playing with the short stack in a tournament these type of hands are better than a rag A or K for a push all in looking to double up. The reason for this is, if we are called in this spot, chances are it will be with a

bigger A/K and you are dominated with say 76, at least you have two live cards. You can also get pay well with hands like 79, J9, QT – with these hands you can hit a straight on what appears to be a dry board. A word of caution, again never play these hands to 3 and 4 bets and raise pre flop if uncontested and if you miss the flop don't get pot committed by over playing this rag hand. Friday Night is Poker Night at Bar Lillie Langtry, opposite the Riviera Hotel in Benalmadena, starts at 8.30pm and you can play a fun game of poker, swop notes with other players and if you fancy learning the game come along as I myself or other players will be happy to introduce you to the game. For more details tel 671 118 228. If you are a bar owner how do you fancy starting a poker league? Get in touch for more details.

This year we had a great response to the competition with 52 pairs and 38 triples. For most of the time we had good weather with only the Saturday unplayable due to a downpour of rain. On the Sunday the quarter finals of the pairs was played between Alan Plimmer, Lynne Heseltine (Superbowl) and John and Ann Fenton (Mijas). The Fentons won this game.

Also playing were Rob and Geraldine Robinson (Mijas) and Norma Ewing with Bill Gregory (Benalmadena). This game finished with Rob and Geraldine getting through. Mike Detheridge with Susan Gerard (who was standing in for Pat

Fisher) played Susan Walker and Alan Turner (Santa Maria). In this game Mike and Susan went through. The other game had Jackie Symonds and Malcolm Roberts (Lauro) playing against Terry and Ruby Groom (Superbowl), Jackie and Mack winning that match.

In one semi final Jackie and Mack played Mike and Susan, Mike and Susan getting through to the final. The other semi final saw John and Ann play Rob and Geraldine,

The triples final was played on the Sunday and what a good game that was. Gordon and Margret Kain with Garry Aldridge played Tony and Val Thornton with Roberto Wright. It was a very close game with much excitement from the appreciative audience. It was not until the last end that it was decided, Gordon’s team winning by three woods. been the end, we still had to play the pairs final on the Monday at 1 pm.

It turned out lovely and sunny but the wind was a bit chilly at the far end. Quite a few spectators turned out to offer encouragement to both Mike Detheridge with Pat Fisher and to John and Ann Fenton. It turned out to be a wonderful game, at the 15th end John and Ann were in the lead 2112. They did not score again but Mike and Pat by the 18th end had only brought their score to 18 so John and Ann won their first major competition to lots of applause and cheers.

The prizes were awarded by Rob Robinson. Ann thanked everyone who supported and said how much they enjoyed the competition.

Ross Brawn role at Mercedes under threat

Mercedes want to replace team principal Ross Brawn as part of a restructure aimed at improving the team's performance. The proposal is to replace Brawn (right), who masterminded Michael Schumacher's seven world titles at Benetton and Ferrari, with two new appointments. New executive director Toto Wolff is the first of these and he agreed a deal to bring in McLaren technical director Paddy Lowe. Their intended job titles are not clear but Wolff, 41, will likely be team boss and figurehead with Lowe, 50, running the sporting and technical aspects of the team.

Donaldson beats Rose in Abu Dhabi A year after Robert Rock beat Tiger Woods to win the Abu Dhabi Championship, Jamie Donaldson overtook fifthranked Justin Rose to win only his second European Tour victory on Sunday. Donaldson, who only won his first victory after 268

tour events last year and struggled for years with a bad back, came from two shots back to defeat the faltering Rose on the back nine. He almost slipped up on the 18th when he missed a short par putt and saw his lead cut to

''Awesome,'' said Donaldson, sitting next to the tournament trophy. ''It was a tough field,

brutal golf course ... to sit here is quite surreal. '' Rose's eight-foot birdie putt on 18 rimmed out of the hole, prompting the Englishman to throw his club in the air in frustration as Donaldson flashed a relieved smile.

After Málaga’s great 2-2 draw in midweek away at Barcelona in the Copa del Rey, it was back to business in La Liga late on Saturday at a wild and windswept Rosaleda.

The game started with plenty of Málaga possession, but lacking in the final ball as twice Rogue Santa Cruz went close. The wind and the poor quality of the pitch did not make for a great spectacle but with Málaga’s first real chance they went in front in the 38th minute. A succession of shots on goal and some poor Celta defending left Demichelis to stab the ball over the line from very close range. At half time you would have thought Málaga would go on and complete the job but it was not to be. Conditions or tiredness took over and it was Celta who took advantage. A Celta attack from nowhere, saw the ball fall

to Augusto Fernández who fired low into the goal in the 76th minute.

The last five minutes were the most exciting of the game, with a Demichelis free header going straight to the Celta keeper Javi Varas, while the same player’s mistake led to Málaga’s keeper getting him out of jail. Demichelis failed to deal with a long ball which left Enrique De Lucas with a clear run on goal but Caballero was quickly off his line to intercept. Celta

spurned another great chance after De Lucas was again allowed to run through one-on-one with Caballero but Weligton got back to make a timely lastgasp tackle. The point moves Celta two points clear of the relegation zone in 17th place, while Malaga stay fifth. All eyes now on Thursday night’s home tie against Barcelona in the second leg of the Copa del Rey, which can be seen live on Canal Telecinco. Report by Scott Forbes

Cavendish wins on omega PharmaQuickStep debut Britain's Mark Cavendish won the opening stage of the Tour of San Luis in Argentina on his debut for the Omega Pharma-QuickStep team. The Manxman launched his attack 200m from the line, holding off Sacha Modolo and Alessandro Petacchi to snatch victory. "The team did a great job for me," said Cavendish. "The guys rode so strong and stayed with me the whole day.” Cavendish endured a frustrating one-year spell with Team Sky in 2012 which saw him support Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins and culminated in him quitting the British outfit for his new Belgian team. He added: "It feels good to be fresh with a good bunch of guys and on such a fast bike.”

Back on the bench for Colin Murray

Mark Chapman is to take over from Colin Murray as host of BBC Match of the Day 2 from next season. Chapman, 39, is currently a presenter on BBC Radio 5 live where he hosts the Monday Night Club and phone-in 606. He also anchored MOTD2 recently when Murray fronted the BBC's darts coverage. "We'd like to thank Colin for his great contribution to Match of the Day 2," said a BBC statement.
