Four arrested after Brazil nightclub fire
Police have arrested four people in connection with the fire at the Kiss nightclub that killed 231 people in the southern city of Santa Maria on Sunday. A co-owner of the nightclub handed himself in to police on Monday afternoon for questioning after police had detained another owner of the club, a member of the band Gurizada Fandangueira, and its security chief.
The country's deadliest fire in five decades reportedly started after a member of Gurizada Fandangueira, which was performing at the venue, lit a flare on stage. Local journalist Marcelo Gonzatto told reporters that the flare had "started

a huge and fast fire that grew quickly and made a very dark and heavy smoke". "Lots of people couldn't get out and died mainly because of the smoke not the fire," he said.
Officials are currently investigating claims that many of those who died were unable to escape as only one emergency exit was available. Most of the dead were students from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) who were holding their freshers' ball. Witnesses
spoke of scenes of panic after the fire started, and a stampede as people tried to escape. One told local television: "It was sheer horror. The emergency exits did not work." A large number of victims were trapped in the club's toilets, the witnesses said, possibly after mistaking them for an exit. Survivors and police inspector Marcelo Arigony said security guards briefly tried to block people from leaving the club.

Brazil nightclub fire

Bad news not having been brought up in a proper family atmosphere I am really poor at keeping in touch with my birth family that we contacted some years ago. However, on Saturday I phoned to have a chat with my cousin, Geraldine, only to find that she had died last May. As I said, lousy at keeping in touch, but it was such a shame we hadn’t spoken more. She was a sunny little thing who generally never had a bad word to say about anyone and seemed to me to be the “glue” that held the family together. Gerry had been just that bit “unwell” with a variety of small things coming up but the doctors could find nothing wrong with her. As a child she had broken her back and, not that many years ago, went through an operation which meant that she was in a plaster cast for six months. Previously she had been around my height but, all of a sudden my cousin was inches taller than me – that was weird! She collapsed at home and was found by her much adored husband James but just couldn’t be saved. Some time later, James found letters she had written when she had her back done “just in case” saying what a wonderful life she had had because she was with him and I thought, this is something we should all do. Any of us could “pop our clogs” at any time, no matter what our ages, so we should all make sure that those near and dear to us, family and friends, know exactly how much they mean to us. do it before it’s too late!

One of the owners of the club is reported to have confirmed that they were in the process of renewing its licence to operate, and that its fire safety certificate had expired last year. He is said to have received threats on the internet – as have surviving members of Gurizada Fandangueira. Its guitarist, Rodrigo Martins, told local radio: "It might have happened because of the Sputnik, the machine we use to create a luminous effect with sparks. It's harmless; we never had any trouble with it. When the fire started, a guard passed us a fire extinguisher. The singer tried to use it but it wasn't working." He said the band's
accordion player had died in the fire.

Cyclists' doping court case opens Dr Eufemiano Fuentes appeared in court in Madrid on Monda, accused of running one of the world's largest doping rings.
In May 2006, police carried out a series of raids on offices, laboratories and flats in Madrid, Zaragoza and El Escorial as part of an investigation known as Operation Puerto. They found about 200 bags of blood or frozen plasma with labels that were believed to be code-names for Dr Fuentes's clients – athletes who were allegedly benefiting from a highly-sophisticated doping programme.
Dozens of cyclists were allegedly implicated in the scandal, including former Tour de France winner Alberto Contador, who is expected to give evidence
in the trial. Dr Fuentes, his sister and three former cycling coaches are charged with breaking public health laws. They could not be charged with doping-related crimes because Spain had no antidoping law at the time of their arrest. Prosecutors must prove that the defendants' actions put the lives of the athletes at risk – something the defence is expected to deny.
The trial is expected to last until mid-March. If found guilty, the defendants could face up to two years in prison and a two-year professional ban. The case comes days after former seven-times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong admitted to using banned drugs and blood doping during his cycling career.
PIVE car subsidy renewed Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told reporters during an official visit to Santiago, Chile, last Friday that the government will extend a subsidy scheme to encourage people to scrap their old vehicles for new, more efficient ones.
Rajoy said the move would help to extensively renew the pool of motor vehicles. “It has also served to save many jobs in the automotive sector,” Rajoy said. The first socalled PIVE plan, which expired this month, had funding of €75 million for

Getting our young EU may give people back to work Spain more Labour Minister Fátima Báñez said on Monday that the slack government was drawing up measures to attack the problem of massive unemployment, especially among young people.
Unemployment affected just over 26 per cent of the working population at the end of last year, while the rate for workers under 25 years was 55 per cent. Sra Báñez said one of the measures would be to cut the social security contributions of people under 30 registering as self-employed to €50 a month for six months.
The lowest amount normally paid is about €250 a month. After that, they will receive a 30 per cent discount for a further two years. She described the measure as "laying out the red carpet for enterprising people,” and said it would be submitted

The European Union's commissioner for economic affairs, Olli Rehn, said on Monday that he might seek to cut Spain more slack over its budget deficit goals because the government's austerity drive had deepened the second recession the country has faced in three years. At a joint news conference in Madrid with Economy Minister Luis de Guindos, Rehn said: "If there has been a serious deterioration in the economy, we can propose an extension of a country's adjustment path." Last year, the Commission gave Spain another year to bring the deficit back within the EU limit of
three per cent of GDP. Rehn said the country's regions are closer to meeting their deficit target figure, but declined to say whether the target for the whole of the public administrations would be met. Olli Rehn

Majority approve of Crown Prince Felipe Just over 80 per cent of people questioned in a recent survey for La Razon newspaper to mark Crown Prince Felipe's 45th birthday on January 30th said he was the best person to succeed his father and would represent the country "with dignity". Just under 10 per cent disagreed. As regards the Prince's relationship with the public, three quarters
said he was "close to the people". Nearly 80 per cent approved of his marriage to Letizia, a former journalist and a divorcee, and consider the Prince acted correctly when he married a Spaniard and not a foreigner. The Prince has been standing in for King Juan Carlos at many public ceremonies in recent
months when the latter has been unable to carry out his duties for health reasons.
Most Spanish newspapers splashed the abdication of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands on their front pages on Tuesday press, as if to hint that a similar announcement in Spain would not be inappropriate.

King's son-in-law excluded from official royal website The Royal Household has removed all references to Iñaki Urdangarin, the king’s son-in-law, from its official website. Court wants Italy to apologise
Survivors of the italian air force's bombardment of the city in 1938 have persuaded a barcelona court to treat it as a war crime. The Catalan capital was one of the first major cities in the world to be subjected to a campaign of aerial bombardment, as mussolini broke non-intervention treaties to support General Francisco Franco's rebels in the Spanish civil war. The use of attacks from the air was designed to provoke panic, kill civilians and destroy morale. Paper apologises for fake Chavez photo
El Pais withdrew a photo showing a man in hospital with a tube in his mouth which it had printed on the front page over the headline: "the secret of Chavez's illness" after it discovered the photo was a fake. Copies of Last Thursday's first edition were also collected from news-stands in the capital. The photo had stayed on El Pais's website for around half an hour. The paper said in a statement that it had obtained the image from a news agency but that it had not been able to independently verify the date, location or circumstances of the photo. The paper has now opened an investigation into "the mistakes that may have been committed in the verification of the photograph". The Venezuelan government called the photo "grotesque". mr Chavez has not been seen in public since undergoing treatment for cancer in Cuba on december 11th.

French-led troops secure Timbuktu
French soldiers together with the Malian forces are consolidating their position in the historic Malian city of Timbuktu after seizing it from Islamist extremists. Early on Monday, about 1,000 French soldiers – including paratroopers – and 200 Malian troops seized Timbuktu airport and entered the city. Col Frederic Gout, head of French helicopter operations at Timbuktu, said: "There were no shots fired, no blood spilt. Not even passive resistance with traps." Welcoming the French and Malian force, residents said that the
Islamists had left several days earlier, following French air strikes on their bases. French military commanders say soldiers are patrolling the streets looking to flush out any remaining militants. Once Timbuktu is secured, troops are expected to focus on the last rebel stronghold, Kidal. Meanwhile, an international donors' conference has opened in
the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to raise funds for a multinational force to fight the rebels. On Monday, the International Monetary Fund agreed an $18.4m emergency loan to Mali.
On Tuesday, a conference opened in Brussels to decide on troops for an EU military training mission for Mali. The UK has already said it will contribute to the mission.
Queen Beatrix Now Australia battles floods to abdicate
Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands announced on Monday she is abdicating in favour of her son, Prince WillemAlexander. In a pre-recorded address broadcast on TV, she said she would formally stand down on April 30th. The queen, who will be 75 on January 31st, said it was time for the throne to be held by "a new generation", adding that her son was ready to be king. Prince WillemAlexander, 45, is married to Maxima Zorreguieta, a former investment banker
from Argentina, and has three young children. A trained pilot and an expert in water management, he will become the Netherlands' first king since Willem III, who died in 1890. Queen Beatrix's mother Juliana resigned the throne in 1980 on her 70th birthday, and her grandmother Wilhelmina abdicated in 1948 at the age of 68. Queen Beatrix is the sixth monarch from the House of Orange-Nassau, which has ruled the Netherlands since the early 19th century.
In Queensland, helicopter teams have picked up more than 1,000 people stranded by flood waters in the city of Bundaberg as the Burnett River burst its banks, flooding 2,000 homes, while two air force transport planes evacuated patients from the local hospital.
Some 7,500 people are reported to have been displaced across the city, with more than 1,500 in evacuation centres. In New South Wales, parts of which saw torrential rain on Monday as the cyclone moved south, 2,500 people
were told to evacuate in the city of Grafton, where levees were threatened by rising water. Tropical Cyclone Oswald, which triggered the flooding, is now heading out to sea south of Sydney.
Four people are now known to have died in the severe weather, after a toddler who was hit by a falling tree in Brisbane died on Monday. Two years ago severe flooding in southern Queensland left 35 people dead and tens of thousands of homes were flooded.

Vladimir Tretchikoff's original painting of the Chinese girl, believed to be the world's most reproduced print, is to go on sale in Bonhams' South African art sale on March 20th. The russian artist, who grew up in russia and Shanghai, settled in South Africa in 1946 and painted the Chinese girl in Cape Town in 1952. Before he died in 2006, he claimed that he had sold half a million large-format reproductions of the print worldwide. The portrait of a young Chinese girl with distinctive green-hued skin and ruby lips became one of the most important pop culture icons in Britain and the Commonwealth in the 1950s. 1000s flee economic crisis
More than 2% of Portugal's population – some 240,000 people – have emigrated in the past two years, since the country entered the worst recession in decades, according to Jose Cesario, the secretary of state for emigrant communities. Most were young, highly-educated people fleeing to Switzerland – where Portuguese now constitute the largest foreign community – or the oil-rich former Portuguese colony Angola.
Mr Cesario said the numbers heading for Mozambique were also growing fast, while many Portuguese were still striking out for countries closer to home such as germany, the Netherlands and the UK. Jail closed after riot
Prison minister Iris Varela has announced the closure of Uribana jail in Barquisimeto where more than 60 people died in a riot last Friday. The riot started after soldiers entered the prison to search inmates for weapons after reports that rival gangs were preparing for a fight. Ms Varela did not say how many prisoners had died in the riot, but local hospital staff said there were 61 bodies in the morgue and that around 120 had been injured. Vice-President Nicolas Maduro said there would be a thorough investigation into the riot. Uribana prison was among the most dangerous in the country and suffered from overcrowding. According to the non-governmental Venezuelan Prisons Observatory (VPO), in 2012 more than 50,000 inmates were housed in prisons built to hold 14,000.

The royal family has never been more popular in Britain and concern over the military connections the royals have is understandable.
Prince Harry recently left Afghanistan at the end of a four-month tour of duty as an Apache helicopter pilot, with a number of national newspapers carrying the story about the third in line to the throne on their front pages. As a co-pilot gunner he confirmed he could have been responsible for the deaths of insurgents raising fears that he could be a high-profile target for a revenge attack. The 28-year-old prince

Half of the firms questioned by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said they planned to cut staffing levels in the next few months, with only 4% expecting to create jobs.
The survey, covering 1.3 million workers at 25 major retailers, showed that Christmas was not a disaster for traders, but staffing levels were kept "modest". Helen Dickinson, director general of the BRC, said: "The fact that total employment edged up during this quarter, driven by part-time workers, is a shaft of light against an otherwise challenging backdrop. It shows that, despite relentlessly tough times, retailers are continuing to invest in people and support job creation as much as they can. But the record drop in store numbers is stark evidence that this investment should not be taken for granted. We're by no means out of the woods yet, and given the administrations of recent weeks, the next quarter's figures are likely to make difficult reading." The reduction in the number of stores – 573 in December compared with
a year earlier – was the highest since the BRC started monitoring the situation four years ago.
Christina TolvasVincent, of business law firm Bond Pearce, which helped with the report, added: "After a lacklustre Christmas, the New Year has started badly for retailers. Well publicised failures such as HMV, Jessops and Blockbusters have yet again placed the spotlight on the struggling high street. This will have an even greater impact on store numbers that are already falling at the fastest rate for over four years."
A Department for Communities and Local Government spokesman said: "High streets are facing challenges such as the rise of internet shopping, which is why the Government is offering practical support. That's why we've doubled the amount of small business rate relief and extended it for a year to help up to half a million new and smaller shops. For budding entrepreneurs, we're providing over £80 million of start-up loans for young people starting their own businesses."

Much loved by the Southampton fans who chanted his name, he was forced out to make way for Mauricio Pochettino. While we will never know the whole story, this sort of thing raises questions over the activities of clubs in England as it is perceived as disloyal. TOTTENHAM

The magic of the FA Cup has an odd effect on some people and Leeds United manager Neil Warnock told journalists he was going to celebrate his side’s giant killing win over Tottenham with a bag of crisps. Tottenham fielded a strong side but Warnock’s useful championship side went 2-0 up through Luke Varney and Ross McCormack to leave the London Premiership side chasing the game. Spurs got one back through a Clint Dempsey header from a Gareth Bale cross but it was not enough to keep Warnock from his bag of crisps and a place in the fifth round of the competition.

Gangs now smuggling Brits warned to get people OUT of the UK! out of Benghazi
Criminal gangs are smuggling illegal immigrants out of Britain for up to £1,500 per person, an undercover investigation has revealed. A secret travel network, which operates up to three times a week, ships foreign nationals abroad under the nose of immigration officials, the BBC Panorama probe found. Some of those who use the service have lived illegally in the UK for years and want to move on
in the hope of finding opportunities elsewhere in Europe, while others are criminals on the run from British authorities. During the course of a year, Panorama made contact with three such criminal gangs, all offering to smuggle illegal immigrants out of the country with no questions asked. In one case, reporter Paul Kenyon met with a fixer as he posed as an illegal immigrant from Moldova who wanted to
return home to his sick wife. The fixer, a former Indian police officer called "Munga", explained that for a charge of £1,500 per person, the gang would smuggle groups of three or four illegal immigrants across the Channel in the back of a lorry to Calais train station. It is thought as many as half a million migrants are hiding from the authorities in Britain – the equivalent to a city the size of Sheffield.
The Foreign Office urged Britons to leave the Libyan city of Benghazi on Friday in response to a "specific and imminent threat" against Westerners.
The FCO has been advising against travel to most of the country since last September, but has now stepped up its warning. A spokesman said: "We are now aware of a specific

passenger door shouting that his baby son was in the back but the thief drove on. It was a frantic 15 minutes before the child was found safe and well in the car, which had been left close to a pub.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to the drama – which happened in Moor Road in Orrell, Wigan on Tuesday – to contact them.
Detective Constable Brendan Greally, from Wigan CID, said: "We can only imagine the distress that the parents of this young baby must have gone through after their son was taken from them in this manner. Thankfully, their nightmare was only shortlived after the baby was found safe and well inside the vehicle around 15 minutes later."

Benghazi airport is working, so they have a choice to go or not." The threat against Westerners comes one day after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton responded fiercely to a review of
security at US diplomatic missions.
The review followed an attack on the US mission in Benghazi in September last year which killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
In her last formal congressional testimony on Capitol Hill as America's top diplomat, Mrs Clinton took full responsibility for the department's mistakes leading up to the attack. "Nobody is more committed to getting this right. I am determined to leave the State Department and our country safer, stronger, and more secure," she said. On another note, it was announced yesterday, Tuesday, that troops from the UK will be joining an international force going into Mali to train Malian troops in an attempt to stem the conflict in that region.

Lower speed limit approved
the council has given the go-ahead to a proposal presented by the united left to impose a speed limit of 30 kph in the town centre which has the backing of all the other political parties. a spokesman said the speed limit would make the town safer, reduce pollution and encourage people to use other forms of transport. no-one was hurt when several ceiling panels fell down last Saturday evening in one of the busiest areas of the la Veronica shopping centre, showering the area below with water. the police, the fire brigade, and Civil Protection quickly arrived on the scene and evacuated the area, situated on the upper floor near a restaurant and the cinemas, as well as the eroski hypermarket on the floor below. a fire brigade spokesman said a dripping water pipe had created a small lake in the roof and had eventually burst through the panels. Putting one's foot in it big Houses of scandal

was appalled to discover last week that one of the country's most reputable newspapers, El Pais, had published a photograph of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez lying in a Cuban hospital bed with a life-support tube in his mouth on the front page – only to realise about 3 am that it was a fake. Fortunately, most of the copies for regions outside Madrid were still sitting on planes at Barajas airport and were easily retrieved. Getting the paper back from kiosks around the capital took more time and no doubt quite a few people are waiting to see how much they can ask for the copies they managed to keep once the fur stops flying.

ow the newspaper managed to commit such a tremendous gaffe still has to be explained in a satisfactory manner. Apparently three of the paper's top editors decided to publish the photo – supplied by the Gtres Online agency – over a brief caption explaining that the newspaper could not verify its authenticity. Yet apparently the photo had been floating around on Facebook for a couple of weeks, something any member of their staff could have told them if they'd bothered to ask. However, they seemed to be under the impression that they had a tremendous scoop on their hands, and to add salt to the wound, they apparently paid €15,000 for the photo.

l Pais was founded 35 years ago and quickly carved out a reputation as being the country's best daily paper. In Venezuela and other Latin American countries it was spoken of with reverence. But that reputation started to bite the dust after the Socialists won the 2004 general election. It soon became obvious to the discerning reader that the Socialist government was not be attacked or criticised under any circumstances, which is why I started reading El Mundo, ABC and La Razon to get a more rounded view of what was going on. A lot of other people seemed to have done the same – all three newspapers, especially El Mundo, gained readers, although El Pais continued to lead the field and still does.

he explanation offered at length in El Pais on Monday fails to convince. The editors involved seem to have been aware from the very beginning that the photo could have been a fake. The Gtres agency refused to give them the name of the source, saying it was a nurse at the hospital in Cuba who was putting her life on the line. The agency claimed she had sent it to her sister who lives here in Spain, who in turn had passed it on.

eedless to say, I have instructed the young lady who lays out this page NOT to print the photograph, which is still floating around out there. The Venezuelan government is threatening to sue El Pais and we don't want to become Number Two on their hit list. Mind you, nobody in the Venezuelan government seems to read my column otherwise I might have been dead meat a long time ago. So let's keep it that way. It's easy to make a mistake, which is why most newspaper stories pass through a series of editors, subeditors and proofreaders, the "filters" who usually catch them. However, I remember "beautifying" Sister Theresa on the front page of The Town Crier and nobody at the paper spotted it. Not many readers spotted it either if the lack of letters was anything to go by. As we were taught in the good old days at the BBC – check, check, check again and then again. It saves you a lot of trouble.

Past his due date
s much as I love and admire King Juan Carlos, I'm hoping Queen Beatrix's abdication will give him pause for thought. The Spanish Royal family can't say abdication is not a tradition here as it is in Holland – Juan Carlos's grandfather Alfonso XIII left the country voluntarily in 1931 to avoid the Second Republic abolishing the monarchy. And we won't even mention the kings and queens who were sent into exile or otherwise disposed of.

've been worried about the king's health for some time now and the little episode involving elephant hunting last year did a lot to tarnish his image, more because of the presence of a German princess than a dead elephant. But we won't go into that!
H
owever, in the wings we have a handsome, still young Crown Prince (just turned 45), who hates hunting and bullfights and whose marriage to an attractive, highly intelligent commoner seems to be as solid as a rock, with not a whiff of an extra-marital affair. The latest poll shows that more than 80 per cent of Spaniards appreciate him – a far cry from the times when the accepted wisdom was that Juan Carlos would be a one-off king. I think it's time to strike while the iron is hot – this country needs a stable, popular monarchy to offset the havoc the Loonie Left seems bent on wreaking.

here they were, Crown Prince Felipe and the former Spanish Olympic handball champion Iñaki Urdangarin at Sunday’s world handball championship in Barcelona where Spain beat Denmark 35 to 19, racking up another global title to make us all feel a bit better – albeit temporarily – as we continue to swim our way out of the economic doldrums. The future king and his brother-in-law were not on speaking terms, or it appeared that way in front of the cameras. Urdangarin didn't sit in the special honours box with the future king (see pictures below). Just less than 24 hours before the Royal Household announced that the scandal-plagued king’s son-in-law would no longer be listed among the family members on the Zarzuela palace website. More trouble reigns over the family as Urdangarin awaits his next day in court, scheduled for February 23rd, when he will have to answer all the latest allegations that have popped up since he first testified in the so-called Nóos inquiry last summer.

rosecutors are asking a Balearic Islands court judge to charge the husband of the Infanta Cristina with public fraud and embezzlement stemming from an alleged scheme in which some €2.3 million of public money was diverted from the regional government and went to his private businesses by way of the non-profit Nóos Institute. His former partner, Diego Torres, now his bitter enemy, has been releasing barrages of emails that purportedly suggest members of the royal family, including King Juan Carlos, were privy to Urdangarin’s actions for quite some time. As reported this week, the monarch may have known as early as 2005 that anticorruption prosecutors were looking into Urdangarin’s business practices. The 45-year-old Duke of Palma has denied any wrongdoing. He blames Torres for any irregularities that have might taken place at Nóos but his former partner isn't going down without a fight. Torres is also the target of the inquiry as are several others who worked at Nóos.

t is alleged that the king told his son-in-law to get out of the business some time in 2006 when he got wind of the inquiry. But despite this, investigators say that the former Olympic sportsman may have continued conducting his affairs behind the monarch’s back. The batch of emails turned over to the court raise many interesting questions, and will no doubt be part of Judge José Castro's interrogation later in February when Urdangarin has been subpoenaed to appear. Interestingly, it comes on the same day as the 32nd anniversary of the 1981 attempted coup against his father-in-law.

Instead of sticking together, the residents of Zarzuela palace want to disconnect themselves from Urdangarin – even if it means removing his name from a website – as if the problem will go away; never mind that he is still the Infanta Cristina's legitimate husband.

The House of Orange was also tainted in scandal in the 1970s when her father Prince Bernhard was accused of receiving $1.1 million in bribes in the infamous Lockheed bribery scandal that involved political figures in several nations. Queen Juliana threatened to abdicate if her husband was prosecuted. More controversy arose when it was discovered that Beatrix’s late husband Prince Claus had been a member of the Hitler Youth. But that too was forgotten and he later became a popular member of the Dutch Royal Family until his death in 2002. ow more dirt will be kicked up in the coming weeks when accounts will again be brought to light about the new queen’s father and his role during the last military dictatorship in Argentina. Jorge Zorreguieta served as agriculture minister under former dictator Jorge Videla, who was responsible for initiating the Dirty War in the 1970s in which as many as 30,000 people died or disappeared. Again, we have an instance where the Royals will try to keep the grime from visibly creeping up to the surface. Máxima Zorreguieta’s parents won’t be “allowed” to attend her husband’s investiture on April 30th. Instead, they will reportedly watch the ceremonies on television from London. If the House of Orange has survived many gruelling scandals within the past 40 years, it unlikely that the House of Borbón will collapse over a few million euros that Urdangarin may have pocketed.

NEW REPORTING REQUIREMENTS FOR ASSETS LOCATED OUTSIDE OF SPAIN part 1 What’s it all about?
First of all let’s talk about what the new law (Model 720) is and why it has been introduced. The Spanish Government has launched a new anti fraud plan to prevent tax evasion. Much has been written about Spanish politicians being uncovered who have assets overseas.
Although aimed at discovering assets bought by Spanish nationals with irregular money, it may also affect expats living in Spain who are titleholders of assets abroad.
The law is to catch Spanish nationals, the expats are mere bystanders. However, it is important as expats that we don’t ‘bury our heads in the sand’ in the hope that it won’t affect us. At Speed Financial Solutions we often come across expats living in Spain who still deem themselves to be UK tax resident. Very often, the
underlying reason behind this is fear of the unknown. In fact, once our clients understand how to navigate the Spanish system (with our assistance) they realise that they can in fact take advantage of the tax breaks available to them as residents of Spain. What is very important to remember, is that tax residency is usually based on the time we spend each year in a particular country, and that the onus is on individuals to be able to prove to the authorities should they investigate, that they do not in fact reside in Spain.
The reality is that in most cases, it would be very difficult to demonstrate this to the Spanish Authorities and so most expats would be ‘deemed’ Spanish tax resident by the authorities, particularly I imagine, if it were to prove more beneficial to the authorities in terms of revenue!
Who has to report? ‘Informative Any person, permanent statement of assets establishment or company who is tax resident in and rights located Spain and is the owner, titleholder, representative, abroad’ authorised person, beneficiary, or has disposal powers of the assets located outside of Spain worth more than €50,000 must report the value of these assets (converted to Euros when held in other currencies) as at 31st December 2012, or the year declared for future tax years.
When?
Between 1st January and 31st March of the following tax year on which information is submitted. However, according to the draft of the new Model 720, information for year 2012 will be submitted during March and April of 2013.
We need to remember that this is an ‘information return’ designed to put worldwide assets on the radar and does not necessarily have to be completed every year. It should be completed in any particular tax year only if:
• there are new assets or rights that have not previously been reported. • the values of assets or rights already reported have increased, • in certain cases in which ownership in those assets or rights is relinquished.
Which assets must be reported?
There are various descriptions of exactly
what must be reported, but they can be categorised broadly under the following headings:
•Bank/Building Society accounts located outside of Spain (if you have a number of accounts that are each under €50,000, but together they total more than €50,000 they must ALL be reported.
•Any values, assets, securities or rights representing capital, equity or assets of all types of entities, or the transfer to third parties of capital which is held or deposited or located abroad. This includes fiduciary agreements and trusts. (where the total value exceeds €50,000).
•Life or disability insurance in which the taxpayer is the policyholder. This includes Life Assurance Bonds (Surrender value of the Bond). Life Assurance that only covers the risk of death and cannot be recovered does not need to
be declared. Please note, the surrender value of a Life Assurance Bond should also be reported on your Annual Wealth Tax Return. •Annuities or temporary rents in which the taxpayer is a beneficiary, contracted with entities established abroad (capitalisation value of the rent). •Real estate and property rights of the holder located abroad, worth more than €50,000 (including timeshare rights, usufruct, and other rights to use properties).

The “useless” Residencia Age concern vacancy Many Brits miss the old style photo “Residencia Card” and still wonder why this useful piece of identification was withdrawn and then replaced, firstly with an A4 certificate and currently with a card – but both without a photograph. The quick answer is the residency card is not meant to be an identification document, it is simply a receipt that shows you have included yourself on the central register of foreigners as living in Spain, as is required by Spanish law. From 28th March 2007, Spanish Royal Decree, 240/07 (law), required all EU citizens who have been in Spain for more than three months and who intend to continue living here, to register themselves with the foreigners office or at a
national police station. Whether they are working or not.
To visit for a period of less than three months or more correctly for a maximum of 183 days, EU citizens need only to be in possession of a valid EU passport, or an ID card if they have one. Brits, of course, do not. The only true ID a UK citizen has is a valid passport, although other identification may be accepted depending on who you are talking to and the situation. The rules go on to say that, once registered, you must be immediately given a copy of the information on an appropriate certificate. This is exactly what it says – it is a certificate (or receipt) to show you have been added to the central register of foreigners.
Although it shows the
date of registration, your name, nationality, address and N.I.E number (Numero Identificación Extranjero – fiscal number for banking etc.) it is not a form of identification and is stamped as such in large letters. It is not “useless”, it is your “receipt” nothing more and nothing less and you maybe asked to show it. Yes, the old Residencia Card was very useful and many a Brit abroad would love to have an UK ID card but that is not a problem or of concern to the Spanish authorities. Regarding the issue of UK ID cards or lack of them, this can be taken up for the time being with Messrs Cameron and Clegg, care of 10 Downing Street, London. SW1A 2AA .

All charities need as much help as you can give them right now as, with the “crisis” they are not getting as much in their coffers. We all know that times are hard but there are those among us that do have “a few bob” to spare so, please, give as much as you can.
Statement from Cudeca
“While 2011 was a financially positive year, thanks to the unexpected income from the sale of three inherited properties, in 2012 Cudeca will close accounts with losses in excess of €400,000, which is of serious concern to the immediate future of the Hospice. This situation is mainly due to the worldwide economic crisis, which since 2010 has significantly affected public subventions and donations from savings banks, and in 2012, for the first time in 20 years, has caused a concerning drop in income from individuals, both
Spanish and foreign, who have been the firm base that has supported Cudeca since the very beginning. This has therefore resulted in event revenues dropping by 15%, and donations by 14%. Furthermore, it was not possible to sell any properties during 2012. Despite lowering price values, the housing market crisis is severely affecting this source of extraordinary income which in previous years had helped to overcome the annual deficit. The Board of Trustees, the Hospice’s highest level of management, together with the Board of Directors, are constantly evaluating this hard situation, anticipating that the current economic crisis will continue for some years to come. Measures are being explored to increase revenue and reduce costs, which will be implemented in the coming months. One of the first steps which is already underway is to reduce employee salaries, thanks to the effort and commitment of all the employees. For the time being, it is not contemplated that the
Hospice care programmes will be affected, given that the reserves can sustain the programmes in the short-term, ever hoping that the measures that have been taken onboard will improve expectations for the near future. In May 2013 the situation will be re-assessed at an extraordinary Board meeting. Cudeca in 2013 and 2014 will be facing a huge challenge: to continue providing the necessary level of care to people with cancer or other advanced and non-curable illnesses, aiming to alleviate symptoms and to accompany them to the end of life. Each year 750 patients and their families need the special kind of caring provided by the Hospice. In the past Cudeca has successfully overcome similar crises, and hopes that this time they will win the battle to keep the Hospice care available to all who need them. Cudeca feels deeply grateful for the interest, encouragement and support received from everyone who has shared their journey over the past 20 years.”

Family cases with an international or cross border element have increased enormously. Reunite figures showed an 88% increase in just under a decade. The most high profile cases are those involving the â&#x20AC;&#x153;kidnapâ&#x20AC;? of children where one of the parents takes the children to another country without the other parentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consent. Some statistics released in December are surprising revealing that 70% of cases are where the mother removes the children from their country of habitual residence although most people assume it is where the father takes them to another country.
Reunite International Child Abduction Centre has also provided figures that show that a quarter of people questioned were unaware that it is a criminal matter if no consent has been given and one parent is depriving the other of contact in the country of their habitual or normal residence.
This impacts on those families who have moved to Spain from Britain and elsewhere and now wish to return to their countries of origin â&#x20AC;&#x201C; perhaps for economic reasons in the current financial climate. The most important thing is to get advice before making the move.
There is now a convention which governs child matters in the
Spanish jurisdiction. Although originally drafted in 1996 the convention only came into effect in Spain in 2011. This means that a judge in Spain asked to decide on matters of custody, visits and parental responsibility must make that decision based on Spanish lawâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; and always in the best interests of the child. In some cases this does mean allowing the mother or father to return to their country of origin with the children but the court will insist on a practical regime of visits for the parent who remains in this country. In most cases it is possible to negotiate and come to a sensible arrangement without having to involve the courts. If it is necessary to go to court the application needs to be not only legally argued but also needs to show a plan is in place for the childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s social and educational adjustment to their new residence.
Divorce by consent
Spain has a system of no fault divorce and a British or foreign couple who live in Spain wishing to divorce can do so by agreeing the divorce and submitting to the law of Spain providing the court with a Convenio Regulador (similar to an English consent order). This will allow them to
regulate arrangements for children and their financial matters without having to rely on the Spanish court to make a decision. The judge will require evidence of foreign law if the couple are both of the same nationality and this makes the matter more complicated and costly.
However if there are pensions, English or nonSpanish assets and other complicated valuations such as the value of business and mortgaged property it is best to consider if the case should be dealt with in Spain or whether another jurisdiction is more appropriate. With the new European regulations (Brussels II) in place the matter of jurisdiction i.e. which countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s courts should hear the case is very important. The principle is â&#x20AC;&#x153;first come, first servedâ&#x20AC;? so it is best to get advice if you live in Spain and if you think there may be difficulties in dividing the assets on divorce. Dangerous Ellis keeps on riding far and wide Riding a motorcycle while you’re on tarmac roads and you have garages at hand normally isn’t a problem but go way off the beaten track and you’ll need to learn a whole new set of skills to keep you and your bike safe. Later this year a group of local Royal British Legion Riders are planning to visit the Atlas Mountain among many other locations in Morocco on their motorcycles. As part of their preparations they need to fine tune their mechanical skills. One such skill is the repairing and changing of tyres in the remote areas
they’ll be visiting where it won’t be possible to just call a “grua”. To assist them with this they called on the help of Jose Sierra the boss of Moto Fast (a Malaga specialist motorcycle tyre and servicing company). On Saturday 19th January a group of Riders visited the Moto Fast facility and were given an excellent demonstration on the manual removal and repair of motorcycle tyres – both tube and tubeless. Jose also passed on many other tips that will assist the Riders on their travels. The Riders Branch is a National Branch of The

Coming up at The Salon Varietes Next week in Fuengirola at the Salon Varietes Theatre, just off Church Square, a sweet and sour moment will take place. The sweet is that the theatre is presenting its annual Old Time Music Hall – with a bizarre collection of characters attempting to keep sufficiently sober to give, to what is usually a packed house, a very British evening of entertainment. Our Spanish friends think us mad and they may be right but under the watchful eye – actually he has two so beware – of Mr. Colin Pollard, one of the most experienced and professional of sadistic Music Hall chairmen, the audience will be treated to a team of performers bringing back one of the great traditions of UK entertainment.
Music Hall started at the beginning of the 19th century with singers in pubs and saloon bars. It took off in such a way that by the 1850s the pubs were being knocked down and replaced by purpose built theatres but ones in which you could eat, drink and smoke. The mix of entertainment with singers, musicians and comedians made this a different experience to the
normal theatres of the day. With drink involved the audience could get out of hand and the compere's job was not just to tell jokes and introduce the acts but to try and keep the audience in some sort of order. Colin Pollard is rather good at this so if you bring your drink into the theatre and eat a sandwich or caviar and chips, he will spot you and ....! No smoking now of course.
The best Music Halls – and the Salon Varietes is the best in Fuengirola – had lovely singers (Miss Lizz Freeman herself and Miss Sian Hopkins), Speciality Acts (The Salon's own Synchronised Swimmers) beautiful dancers (choreographed by Miss Alexandra Avery and company) Female Impersonators (Mr Bunny Lane) and audience mayhem (we hope). This article began by saying that it was sweet and sour, well this is the
last Music Hall directed by Miss Lizz Freeman. She has been a stalwart of the theatre for many years (though still a young and lovely singer) as a performer in Musicals and straight plays. Her input will be sorely missed but she may return in the cold winter months from England to delight us once more. However this may be your last chance, how could you live with yourselves if you passed it up? The Grotesque Factor Mad Terry on Buzby’s Ranging from the unbelievably ugly, through the disgusting, the pitiable, the comic and the frankly bizarre, the exhibits in the temporary exhibition at the Museo Picasso in Malaga provoke a wide range of reactions in visitors.
The Grotesque Factor has brought together a huge range of works – by more than 74 European and American artists – produced over the past 500 years. From curious decorations adorning the palace of Emperor Nero in the First Century AD to the meticulous line drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci; from the vicious political satire of Hogarth to the horrors painted by Goya after his visits to Spain's terrible mental asylums; through to the dark intensity of Francis Bacon and the unmistakable colours and lines of Picasso. Most of the works on show are
drawings or paintings though there are some equally strange models and sculptures, as well as a host of books and magazine illustrations. The exhibits have been lent from prestigious art galleries and collections worldwide.
While it does not do to be too squeamish, the exhibition is ruthless and fascinating in its pursuit of what can be termed “grotesque” – a definition which, of course, changes from period to period and is always open to subjective interpretation. The variety of expression, the extraordinary features and the frankly mystifying ideas make for a most entertaining few hours – there is so much to see
that you could literally take hours to view it all in sufficient depth.
The Grotesque Factor is on show until February 10th at the Picasso Museum, Palacio de Buenavista, Calle San Agustin 8. You don't have to pay full admission charges for the whole museum to see the temporary exhibition and there are concessions for the over 65s. If you have enough stamina you can purchase a combined ticket and make a day of it!

Director Bigelow picked up the Oscar for The Hurt Locker and returns to the terrorist landscape of the Middle East for her latest Oscar-nominated movie – and fans of Homeland will recognise the film's resonances with that Emmy-winning TV series. The death of Osama Bin Laden at the hands of a highly trained Navy SEAL unit was a drama that gripped the world. But leading up to the powerhouse action were
years of painstaking and investigations research in which teams of analysts poured over tiny pieces of information until finally they were led to Bin Laden's courier, and from there to the terror chief himself. The last 40 minutes of the movie are nerve-shredding high octane action drama.
Before that Chastain plays Maya, the real-life CIA agent (above right) who helped puts together (as Carrie does in
Homeland) the pieces. The has caused movie controversy for appearing to condone waterboarding as a method of obtaining information, and Maya appears to play her part in sanctioning 'whatever it takes' actions to secure success. Bigelow doesn't offer comment on torture – hence the criticism. But her movie does intelligently portray the determination and the persistence that

underpinned the successful bid to find Bin Laden and there is plenty of gripping suspense along the way. It's been picking up awards already and may well garner some Oscar wins.

arantino is well known for reviving the careers of actors (e.g John Travolta) and it’s Don Johnson’s turn this time. Cast as plantation owner Big Daddy, Johnson has quite a small but very memorable role, heading a pre-KKK mob who are less than happy with the way the eyeholes in their head sacks have been cut. Only Tarantino could make a hilarious scene about the infamous lynch mob.

amie Foxx’s performance was also impressive and I think that it is his best work to date. It certainly seems that QT manages to bring the best out of his actors.

n a negative note, I do think that the film was a little overlong and may have benefitted from a bit of editing. Eagle-eyed critics will also have a field day spotting many anachronisms, but hey, this is entertainment, not a history lesson!

So, before it was too late, this week I made my way down the cinema to seen “Django Unchained”, and boy, was it worth it!

If you like spicy food and fancy something a little tastier as an accompaniment to rather plain dishes, then this is definitely a recipe to keep. Or you can just eat the rice on its own!
Nice 'n' spicy savoury rice
Ingredients:
( Serves 4 )
• 375ml stock (1 stock cube • 200g basmati rice dissolved in 375ml boiling water) • 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 large onion , peeled and chopped • 2 garlic cloves , peeled and sliced • 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger,
peeled and chopped • 2 whole cloves • 1 cinnamon stick • 1½ tsp medium curry powder • 50g frozen peas • 50g frozen sweetcorn • 50g flaked almonds (optional)
Directions Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 30 mins
Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Rinse and soak the rice for 10 mins. Heat a large, ovenproof saucepan. Add the oil, then the onion, garlic and ginger. Cook on a low heat until the onion is soft. Add the cloves, cinnamon and cardamom pods and cook for a further two minutes on a low heat. Add the curry powder and cook for a further two minutes, then stir. Drain the rice and add it to the saucepan. Stir, so that the rice is coated in the oil and
spices. Add the peas, sweetcorn and half the flaked almonds, if using. Pour over the stock and stir. Cover the pan with a lid or with a sheet of foil, then cook in the oven for 15-20 mins. Remove from the oven, scatter with the remaining almonds, if using, and serve. • 25g unsalted butter • 50g toasted flaked almonds • ½ lemon , juiced Directions Preparation: 5 mins Cooking Time: 10 mins Bring a pan of water to the boil, then simmer the beans for three minutes until just tender. Drain. Meanwhile, heat a nonstick frying pan. Season the fish, then fry skin-side down for 4-5 minutes until the skin is crisp underneath and the flesh is cooked almost all the way through. You won't need to add any fat to the pan. Flip the fish over and cook for 1 minute more.
Pile the beans on to warmed plates. Top with the fish. Add the butter to the pan and let it melt. Once it foams, add the almonds and let the butter turn golden. Season with a squeeze of lemon juice (it will foam up), then salt and pepper. Spoon the buttery almonds over the fish and beans to serve.

Improving sleep 'may slow memory rot' It may be possible to slow the decline in memory and learning as people grow older by tackling poor sleep problems, researchers at the University of California have said, after their study of 36 people – 18 in their twenties and 18 in their seventies – revealed an intimate relationship between an ageing brain, sleep and memory. Experiments showed that changes in the ageing brain damaged the quality of deep sleep, which in turn hampered the ability to store memories.
However, the researchers said it was unknown whether changes in the brain, sleep and memory were all separate signs of ageing or deeply connected. Their series of experiments with the 36 volunteers first showed that they could
use the state of a region of the brain, called the medial prefronal cortex, to predict how much deep, or slow-wave sleep a person would have. That part of the brain is essential for entering deep sleep, but with age the region degrades.
Secondly, they showed that the amount of deep sleep could be used to predict how well people would do on memory tests. The younger patients getting plenty of good quality sleep performed better on tests than their older colleagues who had worse quality sleep. They said: "Taken all together, the deterioration of the brain leads to the deterioration of sleep to the deterioration of memory."

However they said there might be a silver lining – they are not able to restore the ageing section of the brain, but they believe they can do something about sleep. A recent study has suggested sleeping problems may be an early sign of Alzheimer's and a spokesman for the charity Alzheimer's Research UK,
said further studies were needed to confirm the link.
"Increasing evidence has linked changes in sleep to memory problems and dementia, but it's not clear whether these changes might be a cause or consequence. "The people studied here were followed for a very short period, and one of the next steps could be to investigate whether a lack of 'slow-wave' sleep may also be linked to a longterm decline in memory."

This week a man from Liverpool should make it into the Guiness Book of Records

… but to get into Russia, you must have the appropriate and accepted visa! Graham Hughes, 33 from Liverpool is about to get himself into the Guiness Book of Records. Did he spend the longest time bouncing on a space ball? Nope! Did he eat more hamburgers in ten minutes than anyone had ever done before? Nope!
Graham Hughes is the guy who has visited every country in the world, and he’s done it without getting on a plane. Other restrictions put on him by Guiness were that he
couldn’t use private transport over large distances, nor could he hitch-hike.
His odessey of visiting all 193 UN-recognised countries started in January 2009 and he has done it all on a budget of less than £7,000 a year for the first couple of years and then less than £3,000 after that. He has also undertaken "surface journeys" to all the world's hot spots – including
Iraq, Afghanistan and North Korea – and visited every sovereign nation in the world including Vatican City, Palestine, Taiwan, Western Sahara and Kosovo, which do not have seats at the UN.
However, once he thought he’d finished, the Guiness Book of Records ruled that his visit to Russia hadn’t counted because he had basically entered the country illegally by wading across the River Narva to get there from Estonia. So, this
Monday he travelled by train for 25 hours from London Victoria to Gdansk, Poland, after which he got the bus – this time with a visa.
During his journey Graham filmed a TV show for the National Geographic Adventure channel and raised money for the charity Water Aid . He also blogged about the experience on www.theodys seyexpedition.com/
Shakespeare and A bit of a break Luther King together A genetic storage device has been used to "download" all 154 of Shakespeare's sonnets on to strands of synthetic DNA. Scientists were then able to decode the information and reproduce the words of the Bard with complete accuracy. The same technique made it possible to store a 26-second excerpt from Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech and a photo of the Cambridgeshire laboratory where the work took place. Researchers were also able to turn a copy of Watson and Crick's paper describing the nature of DNA into genetic code. The landmark study
paves the way to storing huge amounts of data using the same method evolved by nature to write the "Book of Life". Theoretically, 100 million hours of high definition video could be stored in a cupful of DNA – equivalent to every film and TV programme ever created. Unlike magnetic tape, which degrades within a decade, DNA is a hardy material that can last for tens of thousands of years. A DNA archive also requires no constant supply of electric power, as do hard disks. For their experiment, the British scientists employed a Californiabased company to create
strands of artificial DNA that corresponded to their coding instructions. The end result was a small test-tube the size of a little finger containing a tiny amount of dry dusty material. This was the DNA, which was then "read" and decoded to reproduce the original files. Details of the technique are described in the journal Nature.
The star of 'Django Unchained', and the forthcoming 'The Wolf of Wall Street' with Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio revealed during an interview with the German newspaper Bild, “I am a bit drained. I'm now going to take a long, long break. I've done three films in two years and I'm just worn out.” Asked about his plans, he said that he'd be taking up his interest in
environmental issues instead of appearing in front of the camera. “I would like to improve the world a bit. I will fly around the world doing good for the environment. My roof is covered with solar panels," he added. “My car is electric. A normal person does not drive more than 50 kilometres (31 miles) a day. That can be done with a plug.” So, now you know!

R. G. Waugh I apologise for once again taking up precious space in your columns. I thought we had put the Winter Fuel Allowance issue to bed so to speak, however the letter from Leighton Curtis deserves a response. First of all not all ex-pat pensioners who move to Spain are RICH. Many moved here for the better climate and the more relaxed lifestyle and only live on their pensions. Many pensioners come here for three to four months in the winter to escape the UK climate, staying in hotels which offer full board at a minimum price in order that they can stay open and not have to lay off staff thus damaging the country’s economy. These pensioners use their pension to cover this.
I was appalled by the letter from Mr Curtis in last week’s copy of The News.
What I would like to say in reply would be unprintable in a newspaper but, suffice to say that I have rarely read anything that sounded so smug. Most people who live here in Spain in part enjoy it so much because it is cheaper than living in the UK. Of

As is well known and was widely reported the euro dropped dramatically against the pound in 2008 and still remains at around 1/3rd less. That resulted in many pensioners seeing a big drop in their income and for many this lead to a struggle to pay mortgages and in some cases survive. The difference Mr. Curtis between ex-pat "immigrants" to Spain and immigrants to the UK is that we CONTRIBUTED to the system ... in some cases for up to 44 years! Immigrants to the UK contribute NOTHING in the vast majority of cases and milk the system to the full. "You chose to leave the UK so you should not be allowed to claim anything" claims Mr. Curtis. We are STILL UK citizens and

many of us still pay taxes to the UK Govt. therefore we have the right the same as citizens in the UK to claim the same benefits they are entitled to. And finally Mr. Curtis you defeat your own argument by stating if pensioners can’t make ends meet here they should move back to the UK. Well many pensioners who are struggling here can’t afford to live in the UK either and that is why they claimed benefits there in the first place!!!! here are just taking money from our mother country because we can. I don’t know if this man hibernates in the winter but it does get rather cold here and fuel for gas heaters and wood for “estufas” does not come cheap. Clearly the man doesn’t feel the cold as much as the rest of us!
So, Mr Curtis, I would say to you, we have paid our dues and are not rich so we should still get our entitled moneys from the UK. What a po-faced idiot and I thank my lucky stars that I don’t know this man!

For anyone who is interested in finding out more about astronomy, the best place to learn is at an astronomy society.

y interest in astronomy started very early on in the ‘60s as I sat mesmerised in front of the TV watching Mike Mercury in Supercar. Shortly afterwards came Steve Zodiac in Fireball XL5, Thunderbirds and Star Trek, I was in sci-fi heaven! nd if that wasn’t enough to stir a young boy’s imagination, over in America real astronauts were flying in real spaceships in an attempt to beat those pesky Russians in a space race to the Moon. I was 10 years old when Neil and Buzz landed on the Moon in 1969 – my school teacher at the time had given my Mum permission for me to stay off school on the Monday as the astronauts were due to land late on Sunday night. y parents bought me my first telescope when I was nine years old but hard as I tried I could never really see anything through it. I was distraught until a neighbour who had his own telescope heard about me and invited me to look through his telescope. The first thing I saw was Saturn and its rings, from then on I was well and truly bitten by it all. discovered there was an astronomy society in Liverpool and when I was 11 my Dad took me there. The other members were much older than me and a lot more knowledgeable but they showed me patience and taught me not only how to use my little telescope but also what I should be looking at – it opened up a whole new world to me. Up until then I had been on my own late at night in my parent’s garden – mostly being scared out of my senses – but soldiering on with Patrick Moore’s guide to the stars trying to make sense of it all while learning the constellations. oining an astronomy society or even just popping along every now and then is the ideal learning ground. For me, meeting people with a shared interest who were always more than willing to help out was really what kept my enthusiasm alive. I think I probably would have dumped my ‘useless’ telescope if it hadn’t been for them showing me how to use it properly. hen I moved to Spain and started writing for ‘The News’ and also the previous newspaper (The Town Crier) I found a lot of people emailing me and asking me to form an English speaking astronomy society. So in 2008 I formed the Fuengirola Astronomy Society. Nothing fancy I thought, just a few people able to meet up once a month or so to share stories, tips and ideas. I was shocked!

People came from miles around and very soon there was a call for a second Astronomy Society. So my friend Laurie Yates formed the Coin Astronomy Society with the U3A for people living in that area. Laurie is an excellent astrophotographer and takes incredible images with his telescope using equipment that in my youth could only be afforded by NASA. s I had to move back to Liverpool in 2011, my friend Lee Osborne agreed to take over the running of the Fuengirola Astronomy Society. Lee has taken the society to new heights and holds regular monthly meetings on the third Thursday of every month at the Café Manila on the sea front just past the Yaramar Hotel heading toward Los Boliches. Lee also holds observing sessions travelling to El Torcal nature reserve where there is a very impressive observatory and telescopes. Sunny Finish to Miraflores Benavista Bowls News Pairs Competition Miraflores Bowls Club held its annual drawn pairs competition last week amid a very mixed weather forecast, but apart from a few showers on Tuesday the rain held off.
When the draw was made there were many comments from the members about the strength of many of the resultant pairings. This led to an air of expectation of an exciting competition which was to be fulfilled.
The semi-finals saw Graham Rowley & Frank Tofts up against Fred Stevenson & Brian Hurst, while the other semi-final had Derek Shemmings & Bryan Collier playing Pam Shemmings & Pam Kinane. In the first semi, Graham & Frank got off to a flying start and Fred & Brian were unable to repair the damage and close the gap, leaving Graham & Frank worthy winners. In the other semi-final, Derek & Bryan also got off to a good start leaving the two Pams with too big a hill to climb even though they kept battling away until the last end. Finals

Wayne’s weekly Poker Tips Holdem is now the main format of poker played in Europe and the USA. Back in the 1990s and `80s Omaha was the main game played in Britain and Europe so let’s talk about Omaha this week. If you’re a Holdem player learning and playing Omaha will enhance your skills. At Omaha every street brings a new draw and AA/KK is not such a good starting hand as in Holdem. The hand rankings in Omaha are the same as in Holdem as well as the betting pre flop, flop, turn and river. The only difference is each player is dealt four personal cards face down. Unlike in Holdem you can't play the board as you must use two from your hand and three
from the board. The best starting hand is AK/AKsuited, single pairs don't play well such as AcAd/7sJh because you need to hit an A to make a set but again at Omaha a set is not a strong hand. Ideally we want to be able to make two good starting hands from our four hole cards – an example being AdQd/Jc9c – because we have two flush draws, one being the nut draw, and all four cards are connected for a straight draw. Do not overplay two pairs, sets, weak straights and flushes, if there are three of a suit on the board flushes are likely to be out there and if the board pairs remember full houses are common in Omaha. Man Utd’s ‘Scholsie’ gets frostbitten Manchester United footballer Paul Scholes has had his car stolen after he left its engine running while defrosting the windscreen. Police said the grey Chevrolet estate had been taken from the drive of his house in Greenfield, Oldham at around 08:00 GMT on Monday. A police spokesman said "Inquiries to locate the car are ongoing."Scholes is understood to have the car as part of the motor company's sponsorship of the Premier League club.
It wasn't as easy as expected, and it took longer than expected, but Tiger Woods finally wrapped up his seventh win at the Farmers Insurance Open on Monday. Woods dropped four shots in the last six holes as he closed with an even-par 72. He finished his 75th PGA Tour title at 14-under-par 274.
"It got a little ugly towards the end and I started to lose my patience a little bit with the slow play," Woods said in a greenside interview. "I
kind of lost my concentration a little bit there, but got it back on 18. I knew I needed to play it as a 3-shot hole and make my par." He moves within seven wins of Sam Snead's record PGA Tour victory total of 82. Woods won at Torrey Pines for the eighth time, giving him the most wins at any one venue in PGA Tour history. Woods played the final 11 holes on Monday after all but 10 minutes of Saturday's play was stopped by fog. Those 11 holes took well over three hours, and the pace
of play had clearly got to Woods.
"I started losing my patience out there cause it was so (bleeping) slow. We played in just over three hours for nine holes and three of them are par-3s," Woods said in an interview with Golf Channel. "I started losing my patience and consequently I made a few mistakes." The tour heads to Arizona next week for the Waste Management Phoenix Open, where Kyle Stanley came from eight shots back to win last year.

Alonso to skip 1st test session in Jerez
Fernando Alonso will miss the first test of Ferrari's 2013 Formula 1 car in Spain next month. The Spaniard, who has finished second in the championship in two of his three years at Ferrari, will not drive the car until the second pre-season test. Instead, team-mate Felipe Massa will drive for three days at the first test at Jerez, starting on 5th February. The Brazilian, 31, will hand over to new development driver Pedro de la Rosa for the final day.

Chris Wood wins first European Tour title
England's Chris Wood clinched his first European Tour title with an eagle on the final hole at the Qatar Masters. Wood started the last round in Doha with a threeshot lead but trailed South Africa's George Coetzee and Spain's Sergio Garcia by one after 17. Coetzee closed with a sevenunder 65, while Garcia's 66 kept the pressure on. However, 25year-old Wood followed a big drive on the par-five 18th with a five-iron to 12 feet and kept his nerve to sink the putt to win by one shot.
