Prime Minister Rajoy is determined to battle on During his visit to Berlin on Monday, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told a joint press conference with Chancellor Angela Merkel that his government remained strong and would overcome accusations of secret payments to himself and members of the Partido Popular which have sparked protests in several cities across the country and an online petition for his resignation signed by 850,000 people.
He said the documents were "totally false" and denied receiving illegal money. Last Thursday, El Pais newspaper published

photographs of several pages it alleged came from ledgers showing payments to PP figures. Rajoy's name is written a number of times alongside sums totalling €25,200 for each year from 1999 to 2008.
El Pais insists that the ledgers, dating from 1990 to 2008, were written by two of the PP's former treasurers, Alvaro Lapuerta and Luis Barcenas. The latter stepped down in 2009 after being implicated in a separate, high-profile corruption case. Both men have denied keeping anything but the official party ledgers.
Lapuerta has said Rajoy is above reproach while Barcenas said on Monday that the pages had been concocted by someone with inside knowledge of the PP's finances, adding "it isn't even my handwriting". He also said it looked as if "they had all been written in one go".
So far, El Pais has not allowed the pages from the ledgers to be scrutinised by independent investigators so it is not known if they are originals or photocopies as the PP claims.

Health and...! A lot of you will know by now that I had my own building company for some 25 years in the uK. That being said, I am still interested in buildings and building work and, although I can “scrub up well” when necessary, I’m not really a girlie girl – far too practical! Anyway, our offices are on the first floor of a local opposite the main entrance to the la Trocha shopping centre in Coin and, when we had the high winds a couple of weeks ago, the main sign right at the top was badly twisted and damaged. One would have thought they would have done something about it before but, no. On Thursday last week we had Tweedle dee and his mate Tweedle dumb (maybe unfair to call them that – I’m sure they’re highly skilled workmen ...) up there, with absolutely no safety gear, hanging off the thing trying to get it down. Working off a couple of household step ladders they swung off it, worked the thing backwards and forwards to try and get it apart and, when all else failed, whacked it with a hammer. That worked but, watching them, Sue and I were just waiting for one of them to fall off and surf all the way down the front of the building down their waterfall feature, or drop one of the bits and kill somebody below. Talk about health and safety at work ...! It was utterly fascinating! don’t forget next Tuesday is pancake day so get your caster sugar and lemons at the ready for a great pud!
Last Saturday, Rajoy told the PP national executive meeting in an extraordinary session called to discuss the El Pais allegations: "It is not true that we received cash that we hid from tax officials." He added he would publish on the party's website full details of his income and assets. As he spoke, several hundred demonstrators gathered outside the party headquarters shouting "thieves" and "resign".
The International Monetary Fund also gave Mr Rajoy's government a vote of confidence – saying on Monday that Spain's financial and banking reforms were at an "advanced stage".
Legal action
Meanwhile, Spain's chief prosecutor has said there could be enough evidence to investigate El Pais's allegations, but the PP has said it will take legal

Catalan premier Artur Mas has unveiled plans to "internationalise the conflict" if either Madrid or the courts prevent him from holding a referendum on the Catalans' "right to decide its own future".

Economic figures had been improving until the scandal broke. The country's benchmark Ibex share index dropped 2.86% late on Monday and the risk premium rose by 30 points, after steadily dropping since the beginning of the year.
During a TV interview on Monday, PP spokesman Gonzalez Pons said the appearance of the ledgers was not a coincidence. "Whenever the PP wins at the polling booths, the Socialist Party takes to the streets", he said. "There are elements on the Left that cannot tolerate the PP being in power, so they organise protests and scandals at every opportunity to blacken the PP".
Three regions – Catalonia, Andalucia and the Basque Country – have refused to shut down their foreign offices and transfer employees to the nearest Spanish embassy in order to save money. The Catalan regional government has
delegations in cities such as New York, where it has sponsored art shows at MoMA and organised Catalan poetry readings. While the Foreign Ministry cannot prevent a regional leader from travelling abroad on an official visit, it will demand to be informed and "recommendations" will be issued regarding the convenience of the trip.
Any treaties or agreements between Spanish regions and foreign entities will have to be first approved by Madrid to ensure they do not overstep regional powers of self-rule.
Jobless figures up Unemployment hit a new record high in January when the number of jobless claims rose by 132,055, to 4.98 million. When making the announcement, the Secretary of State for Social Security, Tomás Burgos, noted that January is traditionally a bad month in the labour market after temporary hiring for the Christmas holiday period. However, he pointed out that the jobless rate for

January 2012 was higher, indicating that the government's labour reforms may be kicking in. The number of people affiliated to the Social Security system declined by 263,243 from December, meaning that the economy shed about 8,500 jobs a day in the first month of the year.
However, it was an improvement over January 2012, when the Social Security system lost 778,829 contributors.

Sources close to the
investigation have said it is likely that no criminal tax offenses have been committed because none of the payouts appear to have been more than €120,000.
However, there could be violations if it is determined that the PP never deducted tax from the payments made to its officials.

Barcenas was also instructed to appear before the Anti-corruption Prosecutor on Wednesday to answer questions about the accounts ledger "B" detailing secret payments to PP officials which El Pais newspaper published last week. The prosecutor said there appeared to be no

Companies to invest in healthy workers Despite the economic crisis and the downsizing that it often forces on companies, there are still some that believe investing in their workers' physical and mental well-being can actually be profitable.
Until now, each individual company went about it in its own way, with no guidelines except the 1995 Occupational Safety Law to point the way. However, late last year, the Spanish
Association for Normalization and Certification (Aenor), which verifies safety and health projects at businesses, published a document called Healthy Company aimed at ensuring that all the companies' health programmes meet World Health Organization guidelines. Accenture and Mahou were the first to follow the new guidelines. Businesses that have invested in employee wellbeing know that it pays.
The physical and health programme launched in 2010 by the beer company Mahou-San Miguel cost €220,842 and made €635,891 in profits, according to a 2012 study by the government's CSD sports council. The profits are measured mostly in lower absenteeism levels and higher productivity. A company spokesman said a small investment brings in a decent profit and is encouraging other companies to follow suit.

Cantabria first to ban fracking
Spurred on by protests by local environmentalists, the Cantabria regional government, headed by the Partido Popular's Ignacio Diego, drafted a bill last December to prohibit fracking.
Iberia unions plan more strikes Iberia’s handling, maintenance and cabincrew unions said they are planning “no fewer than five days of strikes” during the second half of February now that talks with management over restructuring plans for the airline have broken down.
Last Friday, the day of the deadline set by IAG – the holding that resulted from the merger of Iberia and British Airways – the six labour unions walked
away from the negotiating table, calling IAG’s proposal “blackmail.” In a joint press statement, the unions said that “confrontation is the only way out”. Management had made a last-minute offer to the unions on Thursday that improved conditions, and included a 16 per cent staff reduction rather than the 23 per cent originally announced, and a route cut of 10 per cent rather than 15 per cent. But the unions felt
that the numbers did not add up as long as profitability targets are maintained. Iberia’s goal is to improve its operating results by €600 million over the next three years.
After it failed to reach a deal, IAG said “Iberia will go ahead with the previously announced 15 per cent reduction in capacity for 2013.” This means that initial plans to reduce staff by 4,500 workers remain in place.
If it is passed as expected in two to three months, Cantabria will become the first region in Spain to ban the method, even though it stands to lose around €100 million in investment funds.
Since 2011, six shale gas exploratory permits have been granted in the small mountainous region: five by the Industry Ministry and one by the former regional government of Miguel Ángel Revilla. In the rest of Spain, the ministry has given permission to 22 companies to explore for gas by fracking on some 400,000 hectares of land, with most of the operations now taking place in the Ebro river
basin. Hydraulic fracking is an extreme waterintensive process for obtaining gas encrusted in small pockets of rock deep beneath the Earth's surface, at around 2,500 metres. Between seven and 15 million litres of water mixed with sand and chemicals – some allegedly carcinogens – are pumped below under high pressure to ensure the rock breaks and gas is released. The controversial technique has been denounced by environmentalists all over the world because of its possible health consequences on people in surrounding communities.
Despite their protests, Industry Minister José Manuel Soria told

Parliament last December: "The government will continue authorising permits for nonconventional gas extractions, which are known as fracking, as long as their methods follow environmental controls and comply with European directives."
The campaign against fracking was originally launched in Cantabria by three men: Manuel López, an environmental technician; Daniel González, a public works engineer, and Ángel Saiz, the mayor of Villacarriedo, who are now preparing to take their campaign to the rest of Spain. After one year of educating people about the dangers, many residents of Cantabria are now aware of the risks involved. Some 30 municipalities have already approved petitions against the energy companies. A spokesman for Shale Gas España, a platform that groups various multinational petroleum firms, said the concern is unjustified: "We are not going to be digging wells behind every tree, every well has its risks but we work responsibly to minimise them." He added: "Spain imports 99 percent of the gas it consumes and we are trying to stop that dependency."

Pensioners top nine million
While the IMF, the European Commission and the European Central Bank believe major progress has been made in cleaning up Spain's financial sector, they insist there is no room for complacency, with a number of tasks still pending.
After the second visit to Spain by the so-called “men in black” in connection with the European bailout granted to Spain to recapitalise its banks, the IMF said on its website on Monday that
major progress has been made in implementing financial sector reforms, but called for a timetable for the overhaul of the Bank of Spain’s supervisory duties. After a damning report by the Association of Inspectors on the Bank of Spain's supervisory practices, it announced a series of measures to tighten controls, including extending the practice of having in-house inspectors at the top banks.
The men in black also
welcomed the government’s plan to offer greater protection to mortgage holders against foreclosures and evictions. They visited Madrid from
January 25th to February 1st and their final report will be conveyed to the Spanish authorities and the European Commission in early March.
Nissan chooses Barcelona Nissan’s director of industrial operations in Spain announced in a news conference on Monday in Barcelona that its plant there will build its new passenger car model from 2015. The news came six days after Nissan’s management and
the labour unions signed a competitiveness plan, which includes a 20 per cent cut in wages for new employees, but guarantees the rights of the current workforce in the event of future layoffs.
The decision followed
six months of negotiations between the workers' representatives and management. Production of the new model will create 1,000 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect ones. It will entail an investment of €130 million
in the Free Zone plant to build a new production line. Initial output will be 80,000 units a year. The new compact model is named Invitation. It will have five doors and aims to compete with Volkswagen’s Golf model and Ford’s Focus.
the number of people in Spain receiving a pension from the state in one form or another topped the nine million mark at the start of this year for the first time ever – mainly because the ageing population is overtaking the number of births. according to figures as of January 1st, released by the Labour ministry, the number of people receiving a state pension rose 1.5 per cent from a year earlier to 9,008,348. the biggest increase, of 7.3 per cent, was for those receiving an orphan’s pension. the biggest financial impact came from a two-percent rise in those receiving a retirement pension. the Social Security system had a record deficit last year of €11.8 billion, around one percent of GdP, as a result of the increase in benefit payments and a drop in the number of contributors. Because of unemployment, the number of people contributing to the system dropped by 4.6 per cent to 16.3 million. as a result, for the first time ever, there are fewer than two Social Security-affiliated workers for every person receiving a pension.

Traffic on toll roads drops
an average of 17,193 vehicles a day used the toll roads last year, a drop of 30 per cent over the previous year. Figures available for this year indicate a further drop of 10 per cent. the drop in traffic, the high cost of expropriating land for the highways, the increase in the price of petrol, and the existence of many roads that cover the same routes as the toll roads has bankrupted the companies running six of the toll roads.

Future of Mali is debated UN, European and African officials met in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss how to hold democratic elections in Mali in the summer. French and Malian troops are forcing back al-Qaedalinked fighters who seized the vast north of the country, and French warplanes have been bombing rebel bases and depots in remote parts of northern Mali to try to cut off their supply routes. The rapid progress of the French-led force has put the diplomatic focus on how to ensure lasting security in Mali. Support for a political process leading to elections that interim President Dioncounda Traore has
said Mali hopes to hold on July 31st was aso discussed. The meeting also looked at how to fund, equip and train an 8,000strong African force expected to eventually take over from the French. US Vice-President Joe Biden, speaking alongside French President Francois Hollande on Monday, said they had agreed African troops should take over "as quickly as reasonably possible". The EU aims to send about 500 military trainers to Mali by the middle of this month.
More than 40 delegations attended the meeting including international lenders such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank.
EU foreign ministers have already agreed to resume sending aid to Mali gradually – having suspended it after last year's military coup which
created a power vacuum that enabled Tuareg rebels to seize two-thirds of the country.
Islamist extremists then took over the revolt. The French launched their intervention on January 11th as Islamist militants threatened to march towards the capital, Bamako.

UK News Adoption may be taken away from Councils Councils which take too long to find adoptive parents for children face being stripped of the responsibility under Government plans, it has been reported. In a move due to be announced by Children's Minister Edward Timpson, the task will be outsourced to private agencies and charities instead, according to The Daily Telegraph.
The initiative, involving a change in the law, is part of a drive under Education Secretary Michael Gove to speed up the adoption process, which is often held up by bureaucratic hurdles and a shortage of prospective adopters. Some councils have already taken the approach of outsourcing to
the voluntary sector the day-to-day job of finding suitable adoptive parents and ministers have urged more to follow suit.
Latest figures show children in England are left in care for nearly 21 months on average before being adopted. In some areas, youngsters are forced to wait almost three years before moving in with an adoptive family. Earlier this month, a map showing the parts of England where most children are in need of parents was published to try to cut adoption waits. Education officials are concerned that prospective parents are often not being pointed to high-need areas if their own has few youngsters on its list.

Since 2003, former Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has vehemently denied that he asked his then wife to plead guilty on his behalf of a motoring offence and take the three points on her licence to keep him in the clear. However, as they say “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” and the dumped Mrs Huhn blew the whistle in 2011, after he had left her for his mistress, on the lie that was eventually to cost him all he had worked for within the Liberal Democratic Party. On Monday just before his trial was due to start, Huhne, 58, dramatically changed his plea to guilty of perverting the course of justice at Southwark Crown Court, London, after he had spent months fighting a costly legal battle to have the charge against him dropped. After losing that battle a week ago, Huhne had initially pleaded not guilty to the offence. Huhne had left his cabinet post when he was charged with the offence in February 2012 but, after his guilty plea was set, he

made a statement on the steps of the court saying that he would now resign from the party as an MP altogether. Huhne would have lost his driving licence had he have taken the points due to previous speeding offences but it was revealed that a host of texts between Huhne and his youngest son, Peter, were to be used during the case. "You should have no illusions whatsoever as to the sort of sentence that you are likely to receive," Judge Nigel Sweeney told Huhne after the guilty plea. "Understood?" the judge asked Huhne, who nodded from the glasswalled dock. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who narrowly defeated Huhne to become the Liberal Democrat leader in 2007, said he was "shocked and saddened" by Huhne's guilty plea. His ex-wife, Vicky Price, 60, will now face a separate charge but will plead that it was not her fault citing “marital coersion” as a mitigating circumstance according to her lawyers.
The average household water and sewerage bill in England and Wales is set to increase by 3.5%, regulator Ofwat has said. From April the average cost of a water and sewerage bill will rise to £388 – 0.5% above the rate of inflation. Customers in southeast England face the biggest increase of £23 a year. The South West is close behind with a £22 rise, while families in Yorkshire will pay around £12 more. Customers are helping to pay for a £25bn programme to improve the water supply. NORTHAMPTON
Gazza breaks down Ex-England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been admitted to a treatment centre in the United States after celebrity friends intervened to help the star. The move came following a charity appearance in Northampton last week, during which the alcoholic former Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio and Newcastle United star, 45, appeared unwell and shaking, before breaking down and sobbing on stage in front of a room full of fans. He has said that the only thing he can’t do without in his life is booze and he knows it is going to kill him if he doesn’t give it up, despite holding the hand of a friend as he died from the effects of alcohol recently. Friends are saying that this is what had “pushed him over the edge” this time. LONDON

HMV latest The latest news on the HMV debacle is that 1,500 jobs are at risk with up to 100 shops to close once they have run out of stock as administrators Deloitte attempt to restructure the business rather than close it – with hopes of a deal from a company who have bought HMV’s debt. Between 60 and 100 shops are due to close this week, with the loss of up to 1,500 jobs, leaving the music company with between 120 and 160 shops that will close once stocks run out if the rescue deal isn’t formalised with Hilco, the company behind HMV Canada which it
bought in 2011 – they are still in negotiations with the company’s landlords and suppliers. Hilco say they want to rescue around half of the stores in the UK but Deloitte have so far declined to comment on the deal. Deloitte has already cut 60 jobs at HMV and last week staff used the company's official Twitter account to announce their own "mass execution" as administrators axed nearly 190 jobs. HMV went into administration last month putting over 4,000 jobs at risk.
An ex-healthcare worker has been arrested over allegations he leaked stories about Ian Brady, according to Sky sources. The 59-year-old man was held at around 6.30am on Friday at his home in the Knowlsey area on suspicion of misconduct in a public office, corruption and conspiracy to commit both those offences.
The alleged offences took place while Moors killer Brady was a patient at Ashworth Hospital, a high security psychiatric hospital in Maghull, Merseyside. It brings the number of people detained under the Mets Operation Elveden into alleged corrupt payments to public officials to 57.

Let down again by Government In the ‘50s, the then British Government sent thousands of Army personnel to places like Christmas Island in the South Pacific to witness British test nuclear blasts. Now there are 1,000 of the veterans suing for negligence as a result of the health problems they have since suffered. In 2009, when he was leader of the opposition, David Cameron – the present UK Prime Minister – told Dave Whyte who is an ex-Army engineer from Kirkaldy in Fife, Scotland that he would fight for genetic reseach on ex-servicemen who claimed to have suffered cancers and other medical problems as a result of the tests in the ‘50s. "He’s turned his back on us", said Mr Whyte who witnessed five tests in 1958 adding that Mr Cameron made false promises to the veterans in order to get their votes. Blood tests on New Zealand test veterans found their DNA had been “scrambled”, which could
have caused problems.
health
Mr Whyte, started suffering from severe stomach problems and pain aged 22, and later found out he was sterile. In 2009 he wrote to Mr Cameron asking for help if he became PM. A letter to Mr Whyte, written and signed by Mr Cameron’s sister-in-law Alice Sheffield, who handled his correspondence, criticised the Labour government for breaking promises, adding: “We have therefore been calling on the Government to speed up this process and thereby honour its duty of care towards this loyal and dignified group of servicemen and their families.”
Mr Whyte spoke out after it was revealed that Mr Cameron had been accused of going back on a pledge to look into compensation for maimed Iraq war hero Sgt Mick Brennan.
Yes, it is! Tests have established that a skeleton found under a car park in Leicester IS that of King Richard III! Scientists at the University of Leicester confirmed the news at a press conference in the city. The university's lead archaeologist Richard Buckley said the tests proved the remains were the king's "beyond reasonable doubt" while deputy registrar Richard Taylor described the discovery as "truly astonishing". Archaeologists had previously said there was strong circumstantial evidence to suggest the bones, exhumed from a car park behind social services offices, are those of the Plantagenet king but did not want to make any academic decision before the skeleton was subjected to a number of tests. The skeleton, with a metal arrow in its back and severe trauma to the skull, was exhumed in September last year during an archaeological dig. It was found in the same area of what was once Grey Friars church where Richard III was
recorded to have been buried after his death at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, the last major act in the Wars of the Roses. Initial examinations showed the bones to be those of an adult male and the remains were said to be in a good condition. The skeleton had a curved spine, consistent with accounts of Richard III's appearance. DNA taken from the skeleton has now been analysed and compared with that of Michael Ibsen, a descendant of Richard III's family. Radiocarbon tests and genealogical studies have also taken place. Richard III's demise was dramatised by Shakespeare, who had the king calling out "a horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse" before he was killed on the battlefield.

Parents of 'stolen Flamenco classes to babies' protest attract tourists Around 30 people who believe their children were stolen from them between the 1950s and 1980s gathered outside the law courts in Malaga on Monday to demand that the investigations should continue and not be shelved.
The nun who allegedly ran the traffic in stolen babies for some 50 years died in Madrid recently, and any information she had to their whereabouts died with her. As a result hundreds of cases will be shelved if the Ministry of Justice decides to drop the investigations. The Stolen Babies Association of Andalucia (Aberoa) said on Monday that most of the 100 cases in Malaga province which

An Aberoa spokesman said that the nun had not acted alone and there were doctors and nurses still alive who had kept a register of where the stolen babies had gone.
The Association also wants the exhumations of babies' graves in the San Rafael cemetery in Malaga to continue.
The spokesman said the city council's plan to turn the cemetery into a park with a monolith would hamper the investigation, adding that its members did not intend to let the matter rest.

Only seven out of a total of 684 doctors went on strike on Tuesday in the health centres in North Malaga, the Serrania de Ronda and the Axarquía. None of the doctors in Malaga North heeded the strike call, only two did in Ronda and five in the Axarquía. Doñana national park threatened Ecologists are up in arms at the news that Petroleum Oil Gas-España can go ahead with an analysis of the subsoil in the Doñana area to determine its real capacity – as well as the profitability – for gas extraction and storage.
The company had already been granted a prospection license from the Environment Ministry to drill two kilometres down near a natural preserve, and has now obtained a Declaration of Environmental Impact, which allows it to proceed with a project that began in 2006 for the construction of a new gas pipe stretching over 18 kilometres and of a wider diameter than the existing one, which would be phased out.
Road completion further delayed The Coin-based Platform for the Improvement of Guadalhorce Valley Roads has revealed the Junta de Andalucia does not expect the stretch of road connecting the town to the Guadalhorce highway (A357) at Casapalma to be finished before 2017, that is, eight years since its construction began. Members of the Platform met with officials from the provincial government's public works department recently to demand the road's completion and to inform them of the increasing number of accidents occurring at the Venta Platero roundabout where the Coin-Marbella and Coin-Cartama roads converge with the unfinished stretch. Work on the stretch from there to the highway was halted by budget cuts in 2010. The officials told the Platform they were still seeking financing but had been unable to come up with any so far. The Platform has said it will continue to demand completion of a road which is "absolutely necessary for the area".

The company took into account the opinions of several agencies for its assessment of the protection measures required for the project. These included the Doñana Natural Space Participation Council, whose president until last December was Felipe

Olive thieves caught redhanded
a watchman at a finca spied around 15 people stealing the olives one morning last week and immediately called the guardia Civil, who were able to arrest them in flagranti. they had managed to pick about 1 ,000 kilos of olives, the finca owner said. He also said they were all rumanians. the finca owner belongs to the the Young Farmers association (asaja) which said last week that more than 20,000 kilos of olives have already been stolen around the province so far this season and is demanding more police patrols. a spokesman said olives are the thieves' favourite crop, followed by artichokes and avocados. the council has given the go-ahead for vendors at the two local markets to install the device needed for payment by credit card. Councillor ignacio Souviron said this would not only modernise the markets but it would also be easier for people to make their purchases. Brits save sherry producers
Sales of sherry in the UK are saving the producers as domestic consumption of the wine continues to drop because of the economic crisis. British tipplers bought 29 per cent of last year's production, which translates into 12 million litres or some 15 million bottles, making the UK the most important market for sherry. domestic sherry sales started to drop in 2006 and the UK market shrank in 2009 and 2010. the trend reversed in 2011 and sherry sales are almost back to where they were in 2006.

12 N Political Update

Useful fools
W T
he man at the heart of the current political scandal, former Partido Popular treasurer Luis Barcenas, claimed on Monday that the pages from ledgers published by El Pais newspaper allegedly detailing the payment of black money (unofficial perks) to Mariano Rajoy and other PP luminaries are false and "not even in my handwriting". PP spokesman Esteban Gonzalez Pons said during a TV interview earlier that day, that the pages in El Pais's possession are photocopies, but given the uniformity of the handwriting, graphologists have said it looks as if they were written in a single session. That is, somebody sat down and wrote notes that allegedly cover a period of some 18 years which are now being presented as Barcenas's unofficial ledger – the one that the tax men never see.
I
f they are photocopies, handwriting experts can't swear before a judge that they were written by Barcenas. They need the original to be able to do that. If the documents cannot be legally verified as originals then El Pais won't have a leg to stand on when the libel suits start hitting it. Like most newspapers, the paper is struggling economically. Having to pay out what will amount to multi-million compensations will simply sink it – if it sticks to its guns that long. However, if the paper cannot prove the documents' veracity, it will have to publish a humbling apology to Rajoy, the government and the Spanish people to avoid going to court. You makes your bed, you lies on it!
I
f the documents prove to be false, the political consequences for the Socialist Party don't bear thinking about. Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba started calling for Mariano Rajoy's resignation over the weekend, based solely on these documents. If they prove false, then he is the one who will have to resign. The Socialist Party is already divided about who should lead it and the direction it should take to try to get back into power. It can't afford to look as if it has been duped by documents that so far have only been reproduced on the pages of a newspaper. The Socialist Party's strident insistence that Rajoy must resign continues, despite the fact that the document still has to be verified. ere we come to concept of useful fools, invented long ago by the Soviet Union. Just as the Central Intelligence Agency funded newspapers, magazines and seemingly independent political figures to paint the Soviet Union as the Devil incarnate, the Soviets sought out well-meaning left-wingers in the West to counteract the CIA's dirty tricks. They were called useful dupes or fools in

Damage done Writes for the English language version of
English, tontos utiles in Spanish. I know, because the Venezuelan intelligence authorities had me marked down – incorrectly – as one of them, which probably saved me from being expelled – or worse – from the country.
B
ut let's get back to Spain. Cayo Lara – leader of Izquierda Unida (United Left) and a card-carrying member of the Communist Party – was the first person to call for Rajoy's resignation and a general election three years ahead of time. (I must say here that the Communists have often used Socialist as useful fools.) Within hours, crowds gathered outside PP headquarters in Madrid, Barcelona and other cities to demand Rajoy's resignation. Something similar happened on March 13th 2004, the day before the general election when campaigning is banned by law to allow voters to make up their minds. However, somebody sent out word to the Left to demonstrate outside PP offices against Spain's military participation in Iraq – two days after an Islamic attack on trains in Madrid left 191 dead and hundreds more injured. The PP government blamed Rubalcaba and ordered the police to check his mobile phone – from whence allegedly the order had gone out. Rubalcaba refused to hand over his phone because it would have been an "invasion of his privacy". The Socialists won that election despite predictions that the PP would win with a smaller majority.
I
f the police had the time and resources to check up on those demonstrating for Rajoy's resignation – who can be counted in the hundreds rather than thousands – I dare bet they would be found to belong to the IU, the Socialist Party, the M-15 youth protest movement, the anarchists and the antisystem mob who turn up at every demonstration.
G
onzalez Pons said on Monday that whenever the PP wins at the polling booths, the Left takes to the streets. During the Zapatero government, the unions only started calling strikes in the last year or so – we now have strikes every day – and the PP never demonstrated outside Socialist Party offices anywhere in Spain, burning rubbish containers as is happening now.
T
he Left has to bring Rajoy down now. He's been attending every international conference to put forward Spain's case and the tide was beginning to turn in Spain's favour. If he manages to put the country back on its economic feet, he could win the next election in 2015.
W
hat we have here is a struggle for political power by people who couldn't give a damn about the ordinary man or women in the street, who are not the fools the Left takes them for.
L
uis Bárcenas is playing with fire and muddling people’s minds in the process. The former Partido Popular (PP) treasurer, who is like a tiny seed of dry ice responsible for the rumbling storms on the horizon, is no doubt enjoying the fireworks he is setting off. The quickly developing events surrounding a batch of ledgers supposedly penned by him, and which purportedly support allegations that PP officials were on the receiving end of fat bonuses attached to their regular monthly pay checks, are putting Spain’s political and institutional credibility to even greater tests than the building bubble burst did several years back.
O
n Thursday, EL PAÍS began publishing copies of some 20years’ worth of handwritten bookkeeping records allegedly prepared by Bárcenas and his predecessor Álvaro Lapuerta. They contain the names of high-ranking party officials next to different amounts of money shown, depending on the year, in pesetas and euros. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s name appears the most, suggesting that he collected more than €322,000 in extra pay during the period. After copies and details of the ledgers were published, thousands of protesters, drafted through calls posted on the social networks, began holding nightly demonstrations in front of the PP’s national headquarters in Madrid and the party’s regional offices in other cities to demand that Rajoy resign. Socialist president Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba became the first opposition leader since Aznar’s famous call, “Vayase Sr. [Felipe] González,” nearly 20 years ago, to publicly ask the Spanish head of government to step aside.
T
he publication of these ledgers and the ruling party’s flawed attempts at damage control sent European stock markets plummeting on Monday. It was unfortunate timing for the Rajoy administration, which for the past three months seemed to be riding on a direct but still rocky path to restoring investor confidence in Spain, albeit with unemployment at record levels. But the prime minister’s blundered mishandling of the situation has only served to fuel more suspicion about the perseverance of the good-ol'-boy system. And really he has no one else to blame but himself.
H
ere is the $64,000 question: Did anyone really think that the prime minister when he appeared before cameras on Saturday was going to say anything unusual or actually admit receiving bonus pay along with his regular salary? Despite what the ledgers allege, disturbing factors have emerged from the controversy. First, it took Rajoy two entire days to give face after his party was hit by this whopper. The prime minister’s vehement denials and defiant vowels on Saturday ruling out resignation could and should have been declared publicly, by him, within the
A
first two hours after EL PAÍS published its first account on the secret ledgers.
nd just moments before promising the public more party transparency, Rajoy stumbled again when he made journalists who were covering Saturday’s news conference watch his address on a big screen TV in an adjacent room, hampering their attempts to allow them to ask questions. Never mind that PP officials insisted that there were too many reporters to fit in the tight conference room where the live transmission was taking place; this was nothing but old fashioned party politics bent on keeping the vultures at bay.
T
he third flounder took place at Monday’s joint news conference in Berlin with Chancellor Angela Merkel; no way Rajoy was going to be able to dodge questions about party impropriety here. When finally asked about the allegations brewing back home, the prime minister entered into mumblejumble mode, again calling the information false but this time qualifying it. “Everything that has been said about me and my colleagues in the party is untrue, except for some things that have been published by some media outlets.” It would have been appropriate if the sound engineer during that live broadcast could have faded in with The Temptation’s 1970 hit single “Ball of Confusion” after that gem of a quote.
N
ow enter Luis Bárcenas – depending on your preference for Greek or Norse mythology – the Pan or Loki of Spanish sectarianism. On Monday night, the right-wing television talk show "El cascabel al gato" (formerly, "El gato al agua") broadcast an audioonly interview with the former PP treasurer who, after five days of silence, proclaimed that the handwriting on those ledgers was not his own. Facing serious tax evasion charges and ongoing inquiries about a €22-million Swiss bank account, which he also said has nothing to do with the PP, Bárcenas, pressed by a legal bench vice, is now offering to give a handwriting sample for comparison.
O
nly God knows when Bárcenas will finally swallow this bitter pill, which no doubt may seem like a cyanide capsule for some inside the PP. Anti-corruption prosecutors have now delved into the case, but they admit that the worse things that could be discovered are misdemeanour tax violations committed by PP, which may only lead to mere fines. But the damage is done. Will this mess bring the Rajoy government to its knees? No, but these irreparable injuries inflicted on Spain are bound to extend the economic and social crises much further.

New reporting requirements for assets located outside of Spain part 2 What are the penalties for not reporting?
A system of penalties applies for cases in which the filing is: l
not submitted on time
submitted with incomplete, inaccurate or false information, or
l
presented by means other than electronic, computer or telematic. l
These are considered very serious offenses.
Penalties in these cases are fixed, generally in an amount of €5,000 per item or set of data on the same asset, with a minimum of €10,000. The amount of data or data set is reduced to €100 (with a minimum of €1,500) if the information model is filed late without prior notification.
What happens if the information model is not filed at all?
For Personal Income Tax, tenure, statement or acquisition of goods or rights in respect of which the obligation to declare has not been fulfilled will be considered a taxable capital gain, and integrated into the overall tax base of the oldest non prescribed tax year. On top of that, interests and penalties (150% of the tax arisen) will be imposed.
Eg: A house worth €150,000 is not declared in year 2012 return. If this is found out in year 2014 the total to be paid including interest and penalties in 2014 would be €95,931.20. This will only be avoided if the taxpayer can prove that those rights or assets were acquired: l With declared income, which would include income regularised by “special tax return” regulated in the first additional provision of Royal Decree-Law 12/2012, also known as “tax amnesty”.
l With income earned in tax years in which the tax payer was not a taxpayer in Spain of the Personal Income Tax respectively.
STOP! ... What does that last paragraph really mean?
It refers to the penalties not applying for assets acquired from income earned before becoming Spanish tax resident. I would suggest that QROPS (built from UK tax relieved income) and properties bought whilst still in the UK (usually with the use of a mortgage whilst working) would be exempt. This makes a BIG difference to most expats living in Spain. Indeed, one of the most common questions we are being asked at Speed Financial Solutions is ‘how does this affect my QROPS?’
Interesting. Worth challenging and getting an opinion. I am in the process of doing exactly this, as it seems that this view has not yet been examined on behalf of our expat community. As always, with any advice provided, even by so called experts, in terms of tax, we will only ever be offered an ‘opinion’. It is only if and when challenged by law that any one individual will know for sure how they will be taxed. I will endeavour to advise you further on this new rule as more information becomes available. A loyal dog whose owner died late last year has apparently been showing up for Mass every day for the last two months at the church where the funeral was held. Tommy, a 7-year-old German Shepherd, used to accompany his owner, Maria Margherita Lochi, to services at Santa Maria Assunta church in San Donaci, Italy, according to the Daily Mail, and was allowed to sit at her feet. After she died, the dog "joined mourners at her funeral service" according to locals and "followed after Maria's coffin" as it was carried into the church.
Tommy, a stray who was adopted by Maria, has been showing up "when the bell rings out to mark the beginning of services" ever since. "He's there every time I celebrate mass and is very well behaved," Father Donato Panna told the paper. "He doesn't make a sound."
None of the other parishioners has complained, Panna said, and villagers give the dog food and water and allow him to sleep nearby.
"I've not heard one bark from him in all the time he has been coming in," Panna added. "He waits patiently by the side of the altar and just sits there quietly. I didn't have the heart to throw him out — I've just recently lost my own dog, so I leave him there until Mass finishes and then I let him out."
Loyal Tomi will continue to visit the church for as long as he wants to and has become a fixture at the local Mass services.

Talking of Pets The loss of a pet. Part 5 Acceptance
This is the healing stage of the mourning process. Now the strongest sensations of pain are starting to fade. The dog is still missed and you still think of her, but now more subjectively than simply with grief. Once again, there is no time limit to reach this stage. It can take anything between months and years.
A new dog?
The decision to replace the old pet is a very personal and individual matter. Some people simply can’t endure the thought of giving their heart to another animal. Others choose to instantly replace it. Most people, however, need to take their time to mourn before they can start thinking of getting a new pet.
Burial or cremation?
A burial in the backyard is not always the most practical solution from a legal point of view. In Spain it is strictly prohibited to bury a pet in the garden.
Regardless of whether your pet has been put to sleep or died tragically, you can always go to your veterinary clinic and ask to be put in a secluded room, maybe with some candles alight on the table. Here you can cry in peace and start identifying your emotions. The clinic will then arrange for your pet to be cremated. You can choose between separate – individual – or collective cremation. If you choose separate cremation the ashes will be returned to you within a few days in a small urn. After that it’s up to the family to decide what to do with the remains of their loved one. Some people choose to put the urn in a special place, while others choose to scatter the ashes upon a favourite area or perhaps into the soil of a plant. This article is dedicated to our beloved little Doobie. Thank you for the years we shared and all the joy you gave our family. Written by Susanne Kamu, Veterinary Surgeon

Walking to help give life to days A charity walk in aid of Cudeca took place last month in Benalmadena.
Attended by over 190, participants – including some from Mallorca – covered a distance of four kilometres along the promenade, starting and ending at the Bil-Bil Castle. Walkers were rewarded with hot chocolate, coffee or
tea on arrival and shortly after, a charity raffle was held.
Thanks to all, a fantastic €1,850 was raised, which will help to cover the costs of the Cudeca welfare programmes. These provide free assistance each year to more than 750 people with advanced and non-curable illnesses within Malaga province.
Cudeca is wholeheartedly grateful to Diamond Resorts International who organised the walk and all their staff for their support and enthusiasm in organising this charity event and to all the future participants.
The money raised can help Cudeca to continue Giving Life to Days to those who need it most.

The process of renewing a British passport in Spain will go through a dramatic change within the next few months. Currently most British passports outside the UK can only be renewed at one of the regional processing centres. The Regional Processing Centre in Madrid is responsible for all passports in Spain, Portugal, Andorra, North Africa, Greece, Cyprus and Cuba but this will soon come to an end. Then applications for British passports and renewals will only be dealt with by the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) in the UK. A British passport can be renewed at any time and currently up to nine months of the remaining time will be transferred to the new passport. So it makes sense to apply early. The passport office already recommend sending applications by secure means and at nearly 200 Euros for an adult renewal it makes sense to follow their advice. The check and send service at Woody's in Los
Boliches has successfully managed all manner of British passport renewals and applications for the last nine years. The Madrid passport office say “ Up to 1 in 5 passport applications received in our Regional Passport Processing Centre are incorrectly filled out. Don’t let yours be one of them”. Woody's thoroughly check and send off for all types of passports, lost or stolen, adult or child under 16, first passport, the free veterans and the 48 page business passport. Nothing goes up to Madrid or soon over to the IPS unless it is correct in all respects. The service is well known to be secure, well informed and efficient. They supply up to date forms, fully explain what to do and even fill out most of your paperwork and then re-check your application and the
photographs. The new passports are returned directly to them for you to collect. It is a safe, easy way to renew any UK passport. Located right opposite the rear door of the Confortel Hotel on the Paseo Maritimo in Los Boliches, Woody's is easy to find on Calle Poeta Salvador Rueda 93, Los Boliches, 29640 Fuengirola. Open for passports 9.00 – 2.00 Monday to Friday, telephone 952 471 877, email/website woodyslosboliches@gmail. com, www.woodys.es Woody's like happy customers, they come back. various levels of extrusions of aluminium to cater for the client's needs, from a simple lightduty frame to more substantial profiles for heavy-duty use, in both single or double-glazed format. With our experience and knowledge we are able to adapt our products to construct enclosures for most things including conservatories, sauna/ jacuzzi enclosures and roofs. We will provide clients with an answer to most requirements.
How PC are PVC windows?
One of the biggest revolutions in the look of our buildings in recent years has been in windows. The UK government's efforts to reduce energy use has singled out windows for special attention and this applies equally here in Spain. All new and replacement windows now should be double glazed to cut heat loss.
Consequently, wooden window frames have given way to PVC framed double glazing, which is cheaper to buy and install. In fact, wood double glazing can cost up to three times as much. The aim of Geneva Windows is to provide an excellent product and service to all clients at a fair price and to be totally honest at all times. We specialise in manufacture and personal service in order that our clients have total confidence in the company. We can fully control events from the initial enquiry to completion of works and future servicing if required. All staff are extremely experience and directly employed. A SMART way to measure part 1 your electricity New European regulations require the introduction of SMART Meters to “encourage consumers to play an active role in the electricity market and thus improve energy efficiency! To comply with the relevant Spanish regulations, Real Descreto 1110/2007, Endesa inaugurated its SMART Grid Operations Centre in October 2010 and between 2011 and 2018 will be replacing an estimated 13 million electricity meters in Spain, for consumers with ‘potencia contratada’ (contracted power) of 15 kW or less. SMART Meters monitor and control electricity consumption and facilitate other ‘operations’ remotely thanks to the SMART Grid, a state-of-the-art communications system developed jointly by Endesa and Enel who together boast the largest number of SMART Meters installed on a countrywide basis, estimated to be in excess of 38 million. I originally posted an
article on SMART Meters in October 2011 when I first learnt that pilot trials began in Spain that year, with SMART Meters installed in MĂĄlaga. Today I know Endesa are in the process of replacing electricity meters locally in AlhaurĂn el Grande and CoĂn, and no doubt elsewhere in Spain, for residential consumers and commercial customers contracted at 15KW or less. Be warned, there are implications, see my advice below in reponse to some recent customer enquiries! The new “SMARTâ€? Electricity Meters are replacing traditional electro-mechanical electricity meters, two models: Single-Phase (1x 230 Volts) and 3-Phase (3x 230/400 Volts). In subsequent articles I will be giving more information on the SMART Grid and answering some important and frequently asked questions. The SMART Grid uses
‘telemetry’ technology to send data on electricity consumption from your SMART Meter back to the supplier via the electricity supply network cables. The SMART Grid project not only involves the replacement of millions of electricity meters, it also relies on the installation of Data Concentrators will be placed at over 140,000 sub-stations and transformers across the county. The data collected at the local substation will then be sent from there via the internet to the various billing companies. With a SMART Meter installed you will never again receive an estimated bill, nor will you see the Endesa (Cobra) meter reader, he will now be ‘en paro’ (on the dole)! Part 2 next week. Arabesque and Seduction – the fascination of women The female form has intrigued and inspired artists for millenia and the temporary exhibition now showing at the Museo Carmen Thyssen in Malaga showcases the works of the Balearic painter Hermenegildo Anglada-Camarasa whose fascination with the subject of women was evident throughout his career. He is considered one of the most important modern Catalan artists of the first decade of the 20th Century. The title of the exhibition is Arabesque and Seduction and the paintings on show are divided into sections, each depicting a particular style and approach as the artist developed his interests and techniques. After training in Barcelona in 1894 Anglada-Camarasa went to Paris, as did so many artists, and some paintings in “Evocation of the Nude” date from this period. As his style evolved he moved away from realism and several of the later paintings in the section “Paris Portraits and Nocturnes” are striking in their use of an almost ghostly quality of light and the suggestion of movement evident in his
depictions of the women on the streets of the city at night-time.
“The Splendour of Women” section includes large canvases of vibrant colour and sensuality. These full-length portraits are fascinating and arresting, not only for the direct gaze of the sitters and the compelling quality of their eyes but also by the elaborate backgrounds and fabrics which often glow with a jewel-like quality. “A Passion for Dance” celebrates the Spanish gypsy dancing flamenco, alive with suggestion and movement to capture the passion and lack of inhibition of these exotic women. Dance was a subject that the artist returned to again and again throughout his career as it combined his love of women with his

Montana Red at El Mojito Art Exhibition Walk! Montana Red are Liz and Paul Cox. They have been living on the Costa del Sol for the past ten years working as a cabaret duo in the Thompson hotels, timeshares and Irish bars. They have been the resident Saturday night duo at El Mojito for the past four years with a mixture of comedy tributes, rock n’ roll, country and easy listening – in fact all types of music over the past fifty years. Before moving to Spain Liz and Paul toured the UK country circuit for twelve years as Montana Red, and worked as far afield as Cornwall’s country and line-dancing clubs to the Country Festivals at Prestatyn in North Wales, taking in Devon, Bristol, Minehead Country Weekends, South Wales, Gloucestershire,
Birmingham, Brighton and Lincolnshire on the way. Always in demand they supported many well known country acts, including the great Irish artists Ann Breen and Susan McCann at the Ponsmere Country Festivals. They have decided to “go back to their roots” and are now performing their Montana Red Show on the Costa del Sol which includes music from Dolly Parton, The Mavericks,
Glen Campbell, The Eagles, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, John Denver, Steve Earle and Mary Chapin Carpenter to name but a few. This coming Sunday, February 10th there is a second walk, only this time it will be a bit later at 11.30am. It’s a delightful way to spend a Sunday morning and to help raise money for a very worthwhile cause – the 5 euro entry fee includes drinks and yummy cakes afterwards. O
K, I have not read the book “Life of Pi”, but have been led to believe that it is a magical and unusual story, and that is just swell, however, I’m not sure Ang Lee was able to bring the book to life, so to speak.

f l i ghT Directed by Robert Zemeckis Starring: Denzel Washington, Kelly Reilly, John Goodman
You may want to swap the popcorn for Quells as you take your seats for what starts out as a very bumpy ride indeed. And you may certainly want to cancel any flights you have lined up any time soon after watching the first 40 minutes of Oscar winning director Zemeckis’s movie. Denzel Washington has received a best actor Oscar nod for his role as Captain Whip Whitaker, an airline
pilot who is high before he even takes off. Whip has serious booze, drug and sex addiction problems but reckons none of this compromises his ability as a pilot. But when what was just a normal ‘day at the office’ turned into a terrifying drama Whip’s world starts to unravel.
Within minutes of takeoff the passengers and crew face life and death as a mechanical problem
threatens to down the aircraft. Whip discovers the lack of backbone in his co-pilot and carries out a hugely risky manoeuvre to crash land the plane and is instantly hailed a hero – until his toxicology report reveals what is in his bloodstream.
Whip has demonstrated huge courage and now, with his career facing ruins, he needs to convince a court that his drinking
had no impact on the accident or on his ability to save the day.
It’s the first live action movie for Zemeckis in 12 years and he creates a breathtakingly dramatic opening crash sequence that will have you gripping the arms of your seat – don’t forget to tighten your seatbelt!

Th e Per ks o f Bei n g A WAl l f l o Wer Directed by: Stephen Chbosky Starring: Emma Watson, Logan Lerman & Ezra Miller
The Perks of Being a Wallflower, based on a book of the same name is a funny, dramatic and very moving tale of three high school students who are emotionally damaged outsiders, but who unite with others to form a small circle of supportive, life-sustaining friendships. This profound story of love and friendship is apparently fiction, but it comes across with the
feeling of being a true story – more so than some based-on-fact movies like “Argo.” The film is supported by three outstanding performances by Emma Watson (of the “Harry Potter” movies) as Sam, Logan Lerman (“Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”) as Charlie and Ezra Miller (“We Need to Talk About Kevin”) as Sam's brother,
Patrick. Sam and Charlie have psychological problems dating back to childhood, while Patrick is gay and is in a secret relationship with a football star, Brad (Johnny Simmons of “21 Jump Street”). When Charlie, the film's main character, admits to Sam that his best friend committed suicide the year before, Sam decides to bring him in to her
ng Lee’s adaptation of Annie Proulx’s short story “Brokeback Mountain” was brilliantly put together. I am aware that there are many men who have not seen “Brokeback Mountain” and would prefer never to see it – which is a shame, because it is a beautiful love story and an amazing film. Gyllenhaal and Ledger give equally moving and accomplished performances, although the story tends to focus more on Ledger's character. This film I seriously recommend. “Life of Pi” however, is another story altogether.
F
or those of you unfamiliar with the book or the film, “Life of Pi” is the story of a young man, emigrating to Canada with his family and the inhabitants of the family zoo. He survives a disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. He soon realises he is not alone in his lifeboat and subsequently forms an unexpected connection with the other survivor ... a fearsome Bengal tiger.
A
small circle of friends, including her brother and Mary Elizabeth (Mae Whitman of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”). She calls this group “The Island of Misfit Toys.”
fter the first half hour of this film I was starting to think it was a Indian version of “Big Fish”. Was Pi just making up these incredible tales or were they actually true? The fact is, after sitting through two hours of Pi’s adventures, I personally didn’t care what was the truth was – I was just happy it was over!
N
ot wanting to be a killjoy about such a beautifully filmed movie, it
is evident that the significance of Pi’s childhood and his religious eclecticness was better explained and dealt with in the book. (Movie freak that I am, I confess that words can convey much more that pictures ever can.)
T
he film was not dialogue driven, and what little script there was didn’t impress – not even a little philosophical line to take home and call your own. Zilch! It is apparent that Mr Lee is depending on the visual effects of the film to win his audiences’ approval, hence he made it in 3D, and beautiful as it was, it is no substitute for good narrative. It is obvious that the story was to convey some spiritual message, but sadly, I never received it. As for the special effects, all I seemed to notice was lots of glow in the dark fish, stars, flowers and things. There was so much of it I was beginning to think everything was radioactive!
“
Life of Pi” has been nominated for a whole bunch of Academy Awards, but apart from cinematography or effects (which were splendid) I cannot imagine what else it would be worthy of … Best Film or Best Adaptation would be well off the mark. Sadly, the Academy is a law unto itself and politics override good judgement, so the results will be anyone’s guess.
T
he best part of the film?
– the meerkats, there
are thousands of them, and come on, who doesn’t like meerkats? The worst part of the film? – pretty much 80% of it. It’s just too watery, and as OK as was the boy playing Pi, it was clearly too much for him. So, the verdict is in! Save your money.

This can be a very emotional time and it is all about what in reality matters the most to you. The truth of anything, the truth of who you are and how you are wired, the truth of another’s intentions and the truth of the right way forward always has a way of finding its way to the surface. This is a very social time for you and your quest to find your truth will lead you to discover new ground. Look for new opportunities and you will find them.
You will soon feel something lift, some sort of inner sense that a certain financial strain is going to not only work itself out, but that your world of opportunity along these lines is going to open up. Your values are changing, perhaps they are expanding in nature and for some of you, this period also reflects a time where you will feel called to use some of your own resources to assist others who have less than you do. Not many would even consider the struggles and conflicts you've been through, they would have no comprehension of it but now your rewards is a chart that is showing significant financial and material rewards – this can be major windfalls of cash or other forms of abundance. Not only that, but there is a calmness that allows you to see things in a detached perspective. That allows you to see and find outrageous values and bargains. Look at your life with a broader view, this will allow you to rise above something that has had you on edge In fact not much can stop or even slow you down – when you are acting solely on principle, you are scary. This, however, is a pattern that indicates you know what you want and are prepared to do what it takes in order to succeed. This is a time to say goodbye to the "old ways" as this energy is rolling up the rug behind you so there can be no turning back. Self-doubts can rise up as well as dealing with elements of sorrow and regrets for elements of the past. You can beat yourself up but you would be much better off shaking yourself and using this energy as a strong motivation to help you to relate to others. There are reasons things are happening as they are, you just need to remain cool, calm and collected and deal with each moment as it happens. This is certainly not a moment for panic or drama. I expect lately you have been dipping your toes in the shallow water checking out the temperature of things and making your own needed and necessary adjustments. It is time to take your journey to new heights but that means getting past the temptation to follow the path of least resistance and try instead to settle back into the old ways of habit. This is a week that will help you to get re-focused and re-aligned with your true life path where life events begin to unfold.
You have waited a long time but still it could take some time for things to reach the speed you wish. You will feel the new wind, however, it will fill your lungs with hope and a certain trusted expectancy. Something new is on its way and all the right elements are in place for new levels of success and personal September 23rd - satisfaction. You are now flying into new territory, free from the hold of something that has run its course, so prepare for some highs as well as some lows. Is there any area of your life where you know you can soften, how long really is it necessary to beat yourself up or allow something from your past to trail you into your future? Choose to move forward in a positive and productive way. A brand new life experience is waiting for you. The focus this week is on your personal relationships and everything that happens somehow has a way to help you to restore greater elements of balance to your life. It is like you are waking up from a long nap where everything seems crystal clear all of a sudden, the light suddenly comes on. You are left wondering how you could have missed it before. Now is the time to put ideas into action, get your priorities in order take with you a positive attitude and take care of things in an orderly way. Watch your diet and take care of your health this week, get plenty of rest and recuperation.
You have been preparing for something for a while that is finally being set in motion. No more backstage planning, now is the time to take this thing airborne as you confidently embrace your sought-after dreams. Now is the time to trust your instincts as the past couple of months have had you pushed to your limit both mentally and emotionally. This is a perfect time for romance and creativity, this is the time to get what you want and become what you want to be.
...you don’t have to be a chef!
Why are pancakes eaten on Shrove Tuesday – which this year falls on February 12th? Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs, all of which were forbidden during Lent.
Pancake’s Ingredients:
8oz/230g all purpose/plain flour Pinch salt 2 eggs 2½ cups/600ml milk 2 teaspoons melted butter plus melted butter for cooking
( Makes 12 pancakes )
• • • • •
Directions
1. Sieve the flour into a large baking bowl, add the salt. Make a well in the centre of the flour and add the eggs and beat well until smooth and lump free. 2. Add half the milk and the 2 teaspoons of butter, beat well. Add the remaining milk and stir. 3. Leave the batter to rest for 15 minutes. 4. Lightly grease a pancake pan or frying pan with a little melted butter, heat until very hot and add a ladle of batter to evenly and thinly coat the base of the pan. Cook until set and lightly golden. Flip over (if you
are really brave try tossing the pancake in the air, great fun!) and cook on the other side for approx 30 seconds. 5. Remove the pancake from the pan, place on a sheet of kitchen paper and keep warm. Continue as above until all the batter is used up. To serve On Pancake Day, pancakes are traditionally eaten sprinkled with sugar and a squeeze of lemon. However, serve as you like with jam, golden syrup, honey, chocolate spread; whatever takes your fancy.

Today maybe we should "hacer un esfuerzo" – make an effort. Hacer means to do or to make and there are many, many day-to-day expressions where it is used. Hacer la maleta means to pack your suitcase. And to unpack it is deshacer la maleta. Hacer la cama is to make one's bed. Hacer el trabajo – to do the work Hacer un favor – to do a favour. Hacer un ruido is to make a noise and hacer daño is to injure or to damage. Of course, hacer should be conjugated but you can avoid this by tacking it onto a verb or expression. Puedo means I can and puedes is you can. Puedo hacer la maleta – I can pack the suitcase. ¿Puedes deshacer la maleta? – Can you unpack the suitcase. Quiero means I want and quieres means you want Quiero hacer la cama – I want to make the bed. ¿Quieres hacer un favor? – Do you want to do a favour? Tengo que – I have to Tienes que – You have to Tengo que hacer el trabajo – I have to do the work No tienes que hacer un ruido – You don't have to make a noise. In two weeks time we'll look at some commonly used idioms using the verb hacer. Hasta la próxima, Until next time. Valerie

Your teeth, your health, your quality of life This week we are going to start discussing tooth surface loss or tooth wear Significant progress has been made in our understanding of dental caries and periodontal diseases, and the promotion of prevention as an active form of treatment is now widespread. However, it is clear that the problem of tooth surface loss will continue to be a major challenge to the dental profession.
Dr. Samuel Ramsey
The management of tooth surface loss demands a full
understanding of its aetiology and presentation. In this article I will provide an introduction to the series and an overview of pathological, non carious loss of tooth tissue.
Non carious loss of tooth tissue is a normal physiological process and occurs throughout life. If the rate of loss is likely to prejudice the survival of the teeth, or is just a source of concern to the patient, then it may be considered pathological.
partly be explained by the fact that the population is retaining more natural teeth into old age. It is not only the middle aged and elderly who exhibit pathological loss of tooth
tissue, but also younger age groups. It has in fact been reported that the prevalence of pathological loss of tooth tissue in patients less than 26 years of age was greater than in

many older age groups. Another report confirmed that 32% of 14 years olds had evidence of erosion affecting the palatal surface of their permanent incisors.

Forget the “meringue”, forget the elegant silk gown, in fact, forget everything traditional
Is this the way the modern wedding will be going?
… but at least bride and groom were comfy and they can wear their outfits afterwards! Kelly and Stuart Scott from Oakland Terrace, Castleton in the Rochdale area of Lancashire got married at Gretna Green recently and decided to be nice and comfy instead of done up in the usual wedding gear, so they wore Onsies, this year’s winter fashion “must have” in the UK. The couple said they believe they may be the only couple ever to get married in this type of giant babygrow outfit (well, yes, they probably are) and the bride wore slipper boots with
hers while the groom wore trainers with his onesie. Kelly, a 30-year-old account manager for an engineering company said: "Our favourite time of the day is when we are snuggled up watching TV in our onesies after the kids have gone to bed. Nowadays getting married costs thousands and we couldn't afford a traditional wedding. We felt sad about the thought of having a cheap wedding so we said “why not have a me-and-you wedding instead? At first we thought in
Troggs frontman Reg dies The Troggs frontman Reg Presley,71, has died after a long battle with cancer, friends of the singer have announced. A post from a friend on Facebook said: "My dear old pal Reg Presley of The Troggs died today at 1.00, surrounded by family and friends at his home in Andover following a succession of recent strokes and a losing battle with cancer. He was one very real person in a sometimes very unreal world. Our thoughts are with his wife Brenda and the the family and those legion of fans who loved his music and his band. I will miss him hugely." He announced he had lung cancer in January 2012 after being in hospital following a series of strokes and said he was retiring from music. His most famous
composition was Love Is All Around, which stayed at number one in the UK singles for 15 weeks in 1994 when it was covered by Wet Wet Wet. The Troggs' bestknown song, Wild Thing, was not written by Presley and was itself a cover version of the number penned by Chip Taylor. It reached No 1 in the US and No 2 in the UK. Presley's daughter Karen confirmed the death of her father to music website WENN. She said: "He passed away peacefully at home and myself, my brother and our mother were with him. We're absolutely heartbroken."
a couple of years we would renew our vows but now I wouldn't change anything about our wedding day. Everyone had big smiles on their faces. I did imagine getting married in a big white dress as a kid but as you get older you realise that there are things more important than spending thousands on a dress. And the best thing is that we can snuggle up on the sofa in our wedding outfits." Stuart, 39 and an electrical engineer said: "Our wedding
day was so much fun. At first our friends and family thought we were mad but wearing onesies is the only time we get to be relaxed. It was perfect and we wouldn't change a thing." Ten members of the wedding party also wore the babygrowstyle suits for the ceremony, including their one-year-old son Frankie and Kelly's sevenyear-daughter Tiegan. Maybe this is the way of the future. This couple are happy with it anyway.
Severed head for sale Props from scary attractions in the London Dungeon were up for grabs last Sunday including a scythe, false eyeballs, a severed head (probably the grisliest of the lot!) and creepy costumes at the car boot sale in Pimlico, Central London. And if they didn’t take the shoppers’ fancy, what about severed limbs, torture implements and lotions and potions? The sale was to sell off some of the Dungeon’s unwanted
items ready for their move from their present premises in Tooley Street, London Bridge where it has been for 38 years to new premises on the South Bank.

Brian Johnston Your newspaper is issued on a Wednesday, but your highly accurate weather forecast starts with " today" which I assume you to mean Wednesday, then the next day is shown as FRIDAY ????--------does this mean that you are actually showing Thursday weather and not Wednesday? Or are you missing Thursday's weather out altogether? Or
Editor says: Thanks for pointing this out and it has been changed. The problem arose when we couldn’t get
printed on New Year’s Day (a traditional thing with printers) and had to come out on the Thursday – we forgot to change the days back! Still, confusing as it was, at least you let us know so we can get it right from now on and, if this happens again, we’ll keep an eye open.

luck if you haven't read about it in the paper !!. Where are you supposed to get these new licences from, and how on earth is it causing less red tape?!
Editor says: The new requirements are that your licence should have the symbol in Euro stars at the top left of your licence of the country where you are resident. So, if you live here as a resident, you would need one with an “E” in the middle and if you are a permanent resident of the UK, it should have “UK” in

is Friday's forecast supposed to be Thursday etc. I am awfully sorry that I am confused and just wonder if any other weather readers have picked up on this ?

Regarding your article "New EU driving licence affects foreign residents" you do not clarify if the pink licence photo with the article is the unwanted "indefinite" licence – why is it indefinite when it has a future expiry date on it 4(b), which is similar to my own license. I only got an updated driving licence in the UK last year, and now I live in Spain, reading articles that bandy new taxes, new driving licences, all suddenly have to be up to date yesterday, and bad

the middle. New licences can be obtained by going to Trafico in Malaga. It is the old pink paper licences without your photo on that were “indefinite” in effect. However, even they ran out when you reached the ripe old age of seventy but, as there was no picture to update, that was why they ran for so long – as long as you were good and did nothing to lose your licence that is. As for causing less red tape, whatever does?!
Elviria
to say how sorry I was to read about her cousin’s death at such a relatively young age these days of a week off 60.
Anyway, it got me to thinking and, you’d assume that with a name like mine I would be telling my husband, family and friends all the time how much they meant to me but I realised I had been sadly lacking in that department in recent years (I too am about to hit 60). So, off I went to make good on this. Firstly I was astounded to hear my husband tell me that he thought I had “gone off” him somewhat! Then a friend told me that I always seemed so busy with all the clubs and societies that I belonged to that she didn’t really fit into my life anymore. True, she lives in the UK and I live here in Spain but we can chat on the phone like we used to all the time (she said that when she had phoned me recently she felt that I hadn’t the time for a
chat and had decided that she’d not phone and “interrupt·” me in future) and we can email in the wee small hours if that’s all the time we have.
Your column has made me realise how preoccupied I had become with other things, and also, just how precious all these people are to me. I had become so wrapped up in other things I had been taking them for granted. So ... thank you so much for pointing out these things to all of us and possibly even saving my marriage before some real rot set in. I shall be much more mindful in future!
Editor says: You’re very welcome. Yours isn’t the only comment I’ve had on this. Most of us will get into a rut from time to time but we must be aware of others’ feelings and look after each other before it’s too late to mend our ways and be able to say: “I love you”.

Mercury and Mars
If you’re very lucky you may just manage to spot the two planets Mercury and Mars as they almost touch in the twilight sky on Friday this week.
T
he Sun, Moon and all the planets travel across the sky in a very narrow band known as the ecliptic. It is along this band that all the zodiacal constellations exist, so you might hear that the Moon is in Taurus or that Jupiter is in Pisces etc. And of course that means you’re going to meet a tall dark handsome stranger or other such nonsense!
A
nd because all the planets are herded together along the ecliptic it so happens that occasionally two or more planets can come very close together in the sky – known as a conjunction. Of course they are not really close together it is purely a line-of-sight effect.
O
n Friday evening 8th February just after sunset, if you have a clear view of the west to southwest horizon you should be able to make out the two planets so close together that they almost touch. It might help to use a pair of binoculars to sweep around the area but only after the Sun has set. Once you have spotted the planets through your binoculars you should have no difficulty spotting them together with the naked eye.
M
ercury is the uppermost planet and appears as a slightly pink colour. It will also be noticeably brighter than Mars which is now approaching its most distant point from us on the far side of the Sun. This will probably be your last chance to spot Mars for quite a while as it hides behind the Sun and reappears as a morning object toward the end of the year.
A
s Mercury is so close to the Sun it is always a very difficult object to see. It can only ever be seen easily when it is either to the extreme right of the Sun – eastern elongation – and rises before the Sun in the mornings or at its most extreme left of the Sun – western elongation – and sets after the Sun in the evenings. Mercury will be at its greatest western elongation on 17th February. Find a location with a good low western horizon and get there before the Sun sets. Perhaps 30 or so minutes later you should, if it is clear, be able to spot our innermost planet up and a little to the left of where the Sun has set. Binoculars may be needed at first but, providing that there is not too much haze, you should be able to spot it with the unaided eye. ut it won’t stay at greatest elongation for long. Mercury was named after the Greek messenger
B
of the gods because of its swiftness of movement; it races around the Sun in just 88 days meaning that it is only 44 days between greatest western elongation to greatest eastern elongation and in only three weeks time it will be directly between the Sun and the Earth and out of view.
J
ust the very next day on February 18th there will be another conjunction, this time between an eight-day-old Moon and the planet Jupiter. This will make a lovely little alignment with the Moon to the left, Jupiter in the middle and the Pleiades star cluster just to the right of Jupiter. The bright red-coloured star just below the Moon is called Aldebran and is one of the largest known stars in the sky.
T
his would make a great opportunity to scan around the area with your telescope or binoculars as this part of the sky is rich with interesting objects. Begin by looking at the half Moon, look along the terminator, that is the line where light meets dark and you will find marvelous mountains valleys and craters all nicely highlighted and casting long shadows across the Moon’s surface.
N
ext move on to Jupiter and try to spot its four largest Moons. On this night they will all be visible in a straight line – from left to right Europa, Callisto, Ganymede and Io. Also look out for the light and dark bands crossing the face of Jupiter. These can easily be seen with just binoculars.
T
he Pleiades are always an impressive sight and have been known as the jewel box in the sky, how many stars can you count in the group? Happy Stargazing!

Hamilton & Rosberg’s new wheels
Lewis Hamilton has unveiled the new Mercedes car that will carry his hopes in Formula 1 this season. It will be the first F1 car other than a McLaren that the 28-year-old has ever driven, following his winter move. The team will start serious work with the new car on the first day of pre-season testing, which started at Jerez in Spain on Tuesday and runs for four days. Rosberg will drive on the first and third days; Hamilton on Wednesday and Friday.
ITV4 To Air Virtual to Reality GT Academy TV Series TV presenter Craig Doyle will host the motorsport talent-spotting competition ITV4 will be broadcasting a series of six programmes covering the innovative Nissan PlayStation GT Academy contest. GT Academy challenges the conventions of motorsport by taking some of the fastest PlayStation gamers in the world and fast tracking one of them to become a professional racing driver with Nissan.
The series of highoctane, character-driven programmes will be broadcast on ITV4 on Mondays at 8pm, with the first programme airing on 4th February. Each episode will be repeated on Saturday early evening and Sunday morning slots. The ITV4 show charts the incredible journey that started with a massive entry list of 830,000 gamers from 14 participating European countries. From each country, the fastest
Presenter Craig Doyle and GT Mentor Johnny Herbert
players on PlayStation’s legendary video game Gran Turismo®5, qualified for a National Final event, bringing the worlds of virtual and real racing ever closer.
The six winners from the UK and Ireland National Final arrived at the GT Academy Race Camp at the world famous
Silverstone Circuit in August 2012, where the transition from virtual expert to real racing driver began. Not for the fainthearted, contestants were put through their paces in a gruelling set of driving, physical and mental challenges designed to measure what it takes to become a modern day professional
racing driver. ITV recruited Irish television presenter Craig Doyle to capture all the highs and lows of GT Academy. Doyle follows the progress of the six competitors, as they face a series of knockout challenges judged by a panel of experts, including former British GP Formula One winner Johnny Herbert. At stake, the opportunity to represent the UK and Ireland in a final battle against the best of Europe to determine who will be crowned the overall GT Academy Champion.
Tensions run high in this winner-takes-all format, with the ultimate prize to undergo a comprehensive driver development programme before racing a full racespec Nissan 370Z GT4 car at the prestigious Dubai International 24 Hour race in January 2014.
N.E.B.S. play at the beautiful Alcaidesa Links golf club I have been going on about the superb Alcaidesa Golf Club since I played it last Thursday. The sea and beach views from the course are second to none and most of the members consider it to be the best course we have played in Spain – certainly for the ambience. Even if you don’t play golf, find the time to visit the area and I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. The course surroundings must have taken my concentration away from the game, as I came last again!
Anyway apart from all that, here are the results. Nearest the pin on Hole 6 won by Ian Vaughan. Hole 8 won by Geoff Heading. Hole 17 won by Charles Randell. Longest drive on hole 16
won by Charles Randell. Par three points competition with 12 points was won by Geoff Heading. Winning team with 93 points was John Rouse, Ian Vaughan, Peter (a guest) and Brian Millwood.
In third place with 27 points on count back was Ian Brewer. In second place, also with 27 points was Brian Millwood. In first place with 29 points was Nick Carwood. Best guest with 28 points was Geoff Heading (from The News). In last place and

Opel says it has 20,000 orders for Adam car Opel has received more than 20,000 customer orders since October for the new Adam minicar, a crucial product for the money-losing brand. General Motors’ German subsidiary said that many of the orders came in prior to the model's midJanuary launch.
GM needs the Adam to be a success if it is to turn around its European business, which is expected to have had a full-year operating loss of $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion in 2012 after losing $747 million in 2011. GM aims to reach break-even in Europe by mid-decade.
Early interest in the Adam has been encouraging. Germany's main enthusiast magazine Auto Motor und Sport recently named it the second-best car of its class even before it even hit showrooms. Aimed squarely at fans of the Fiat 500 and Mini Cooper, the small hatchback is being aimed at Internet-savvy car

buyers looking for greater individualisation. Customers can pick from more than 61,000 different exterior designs and nearly 82,000 interior variations. The car also comes with an infotainment system that links up with an iPhone or Android smartphone. “Whoever orders an Adam today, can be pretty much certain that he hasn't seen an identical one. Almost every Adam is one of a kind,” Thomas Sedran, interim Opel CEO Opel, said in a statement. GM has not published full-year results yet but it has said its operating loss in Europe should improve slightly in 2013.

Benavista Bowling Club Oh Deer! Vijay Singh Annual Singles results angry with himself The Benavista Annual Singles Championship event was played, taking longer than expected because of the large number of entries in both the men's and ladies' disciplines. This was a challenge to the organisers, but great for the club, as there was a lot of very good bowling to be watched in the January sunshine.
Dennis King and trophy
members in getting to the final and showing the rest of us up! Congratulations to our 2013 Ladies' Champion.
Jan MacManus and trophy
The semis and the finals were played on Tuesday 26th January. In the ladies’ event Judy and Diana Johnston were narrowly beaten in the semi finals by Doreen Land and Jan MacManus. Jan and Doreen went on to play in the final match where Jan (pictured above) won by beating Doreen 21– 11. Well done to one of our senior
The men's Singles was a well fought competition with many surprises on the way to the final. In the semi finals Mike Old and Barry Pemberton fell to Dennis King and one of our new permanent members, Chris Cooper (a name to watch). In the final, Dennis King (left) managed to beat Chris Cooper in the last end 21– 17 to become 2013 Men's Champion.
We look forward to seeing both our victors playing in the Champion of Champions event at the beginning of April.
Former world number one Vijay Singh says he is angry with himself after admitting using a substance banned by golf's anti-drug abuse rules. An online article by the American magazine Sports Illustrated detailed use of "Deer Antler Spray" by Singh.
The Fijian now faces suspension by golf’s governing body.
In a statement, he said: "I am absolutely shocked that deer antler spray may contain a banned substance and am angry that I have put myself in this position."
Deer Antler Spray is manufactured by the
controversial company Sports with Alternatives to Steroids (SWATS).
In promotional material the firm claims the substance contains IGF-1, a natural anabolic hormone that stimulates muscle growth. IGF-1 is on golf's banned list. Deer antler spray and pills are thought to contain small amounts of deer IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor-1) – a growth hormone.
Scientific research has shown that velvet deer antler improves heart strength, stamina, joint health, muscle and strength development plus athletic performance.
Christopher Key of SWATS was quoted in the SI article saying: "The antlers are the fastest-growing substance on planet Earth ... because of the high concentration of IGF-1. We've been able to freeze-dry that out, extract it, put it in a sublingual spray that you shake for 20 seconds and then spray three [times] under your tongue. This stuff has been around for almost 1,000 years."
Supergran does it again! Wayne’s weekly Poker Tips The highlight of every club’s bowling season is the annual singles championships when the members play for the honour of being either Men's or Ladies' club champion and for the chance to represent the club at the Costa del Sol Champion of Champions event held in April. This year's competition at Miraflores re-inforced the qualities that need to be exhibited to achieve that ultimate goal.
The draw threw up many fascinating pairings which ensured that the event was well supported by members and spectators alike. We were also fortunate to have good weather throughout the competition which always adds to the enjoyment. As expected the early rounds saw some closely contested matches and the occasional surprise, so that we reached finals day on Thursday following Wednesday's semi-finals. Both finals were eagerly awaited with a large group of spectators in attendance. In the Ladies final we had Sandra (our youngest lady member in her first final here) playing against Pam who was defending the title she won for the fourth time last year. Pam showed her experience and skill consistently drawing inside Sandra's bowls or bowling with controlled weight to re-arrange the head. The end result was a convincing win for Pam 21–4 but the score did not
reflect the closeness of the match. This gave Pam her fifth club singles title and followed on from her win in the Ladies 2-wood singles (also for the 5th time!) earlier in the season – yet another super year for "Supergran" although perhaps she should now be "Supergreatgran" after the arrival of her first four great grandchildren in the last six months!
In the Men's final, we had club stalwart Graham Rowley (seeking his first win in this event having been a finalist last year) against Derek Carr (looking for a second title). Unfortunately, Graham could not reproduce his form of the earlier rounds and was overwhelmed by a very focussed Derek with a scoreline of 21–3. Derek and Pam now go on to represent the club at Superbowl in the Champion of Champions competition on 2nd April and we wish them the very best and hope they can prove to be successful. "Supergran" won the title in 1998, so maybe it will be her turn again?
Finally, the club's Valentine’s Day event is being held on 14th February. Non-members and occasional bowlers are welcome at what is intended to be a fun day. For more information contact Craig on 655196616 or email info@mirafloreslbc.com. By Grant Frost
Ladies Singles Finalists (From L to R): "Supergran" Pam Shemmings (Winner) & Sandra Lewis (Runner-up).

Spain, Italy and France have decided to segregate online players from the rest of the world. This is achieved by only allowing players from within these countries to play on .es, .fr and so on sites. So if you live in Spain you can only play 888.es for example and the law won't allow you to play 888.com, the same applies for those players in France and Italy.
What is the reason for this? Tax revenue – the tax man in these countries gets a rake off from every hand played whereas if it was a dot com site they would have much less control. This is not just for poker but all on-line gaming. Alas Spain has taken this to the extreme, making the playing of poker in any public place, even if not for money, illegal unless you are a registered casino. You can still pay for and obtain a license to open a poker
room in Spain, but it is still illegal to play in these rooms because the casinos have the monopoly and will have you shut down – as happened to a local club called Kings Poker.
What are the consequences of this for Spanish poker with this segregation from the worldwide poker community? In my book it will kill on-line poker in Spain and set the game back 10 years with the chances of seeing a Spaniard at any final table of any WSOP, WPT or Epic League being slim. The standard of play on the .es
BWS.
sites is
good – don't get me wrong, but Spain and France have always been labelled “fishy” countries as regards on-line poker so segregation can't help. Just to add insult to injury if you are a Spanish tax payer and win more than 1500€ in a poker game or tournament anywhere on the globe you must declare it to the tax man who wants his share of your hard won cash!

Europol no contact with Liverpool Liverpool say they have not been contacted by Europol concerning the European Union police agency's match-fixing investigation. Reports suggest Liverpool's 1-0 home win over Debrecen in the Champions League group stage in 2009 is one of the 680 games under suspicion. However, there is no suggestion of wrongdoing by the Anfield club. "We've not had any contact from Europol and no other agency has been in touch with Liverpool," said a Reds’ spokesman.
Lancaster selection dilemma England beat England centre Manu Tuilagi has been declared fit for Sunday's Six Nations clash in Ireland. The 21-year-old was replaced by Billy Twelvetrees in Saturday's 38-18 win over Scotland after an ankle problem.
Tuilagi was a key figure in the Red Rose’s autumn
international triumph over New Zealand, but Lancaster claims he won’t be rushed on a decision ahead of Sunday’s trip to Dublin. "The last message we had about Manu was that he's fit and available to train," said head coach Stuart Lancaster.
But Lancaster concedes Gloucester number eight Ben Morgan, who injured his ankle on Saturday, is set to miss out on the trip to Dublin.

England’s women beat West Indies by six wickets to book their place in the Super Six stage of the Women's World Cup in India. The Windies were made to rue their decision to bat first in seam-friendly conditions, being bowled out for 101 with Anya Shrubsole (pictured) taking 4-21. England reached their target for the loss of four wickets, Danielle Wyatt making a career-
best score of 40. The defending champions now must wait for the result of the game between India and Sri Lanka to find out how many points they will carry through to the next round. Teams take through the points they pick up against fellow qualifiers so, if India beat Sri Lanka, England will start the Super Six with the maximum four points.
Málaga 1 - 1 Real Zaragoza
It was a strange start with neither team doing anything constructive but that changed on 14 minutes, when a Fernandez cross for Zaragoza fell to Portugese international Postiga who finished with aplomb into the bottom corner. That woke Malaga into life and on 23 minutes they were level. Parrades handled in the box and Isco stepped up to score the resulting penalty. Zaragoza were the better side before half
time with Willy Caballero saving first from Fernandez and then a Montunes header.

Kent Police confirmed a 17-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of assault following the incident. The supporter jumped on top of the 19-year-old, who is on loan from Tottenham, in injury time. The player did not receive treatment, was not hurt and carried on for the remaining few seconds of the match at Priestfield Stadium.

Adlington retires
Great Britain's double Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington has retired. Adlington became Britain's first female Olympic swimming champion in 48 years, with victories in the 400m and 800m freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Games. The 23year-old, who won the 800m world title in 2011 and two Commonwealth Games gold medals in 2010, picked up two bronze medals at London 2012. "I love swimming but as a competitive element and elite athlete I won't compete any more," she said.
