Pope Benedict XVI shocks the world as he resigns
Nothing was done to prepare the Vatican or the rest of the world for the Pope's totally unexpected announcement at a meeting of cardinals on Monday that he intended to step down.
The decision, which the pope delivered in Latin and in unemotional tones, "came like a bolt out of the blue", according to one cardinal. Pope Benedict said that after examining his conscience “before God, I have come to the that my certainty strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to the adequate exercise” of leading the world’s one billion Roman Catholics. He said he would resign on February 28th, becoming the first pope to do so in six centuries. In recent months, Benedict, who will 86 in April, had been

showing signs of age, often looking tired, but no-one had expected him to resign so suddenly, even though he had said in the past that he would consider it.
Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said at a hastily called news conference on Monday: “The Pope took us by surprise.” He added that he did not display strong emotions as he made his announcement, speaking with “great dignity, great concentration and great understanding of the significance of the moment.”
And among the pilgrims and other visitors out on St Peter's Square there was shock and disbelief. Seeking more news, people gathered around the large screens permanently set up on the Square where the press conference held by the Vatican's spokesman was played over and over again. In the aftermath of the announcement there was no gathering of crowds in the Square; no sense of people wanting to come together en masse to show their support or sadness at the Pope's going. ICKHAM’S
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
J & G Yep, once again I have joined “fat club”. The J in the title refers to the fact that (and Star Wars people will know what I’m talking about) I was beginning to look a lot like Jabba The Hut and, with my new car being somewhat better on the acceleration front, the G force with all the extra weight was not pleasant! diets are personal, I feel. A friend of mine went on a water and grapes diet for a month and lost loads of weight. Of course, when she came off the diet, all the weight plus more went back on. Another friend has done the Atkins diet and, although it appears to work, she’s now stuck with keeping it up and, to me, I wouldn’t want to be eating protein only for the rest of my life. Another is jogging and doing loads of exercise but, that’s really not me so, fat club it is. So, ladies, I will be letting you know how I am getting on from time to time (and how many times I’ve fallen off my perch – well, it is coming up to Easter and, oh! those Cadbury’s Cream Eggs are just calling out to me “eat me! eat me!” so what can a person do?! My husband found the most gorgeous little puppy in the middle of the road yesterday. She was only about 8 weeks old, covered in fleas and frightened witless by the cars. I took her across the road from our office to the pet shop that is in la Trocha and the lovely lady in there gave her a bath to get rid of the fleas and some food to keep her fed. I shall definitely be going there again! She spent the rest of the day asleep on my lap while I put this lot together. All together now ... Aaah!

Pope Benedict XVI shocks the world As darkness fell there was a torrential downpour and a lightning bolt struck the dome of St. Peter’s. By mid-evening the square was almost completely deserted.
Meanwhile, the announcement sent shock waves around the world. President Obama recalled his meeting with the Pope in 2009. He said he had appreciated their work together during the past four years, adding that "the church plays a critical role in the United States and the world, and I wish the best to those who will soon gather to choose His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI’s successor.”
Prime Minister Mario Monti of Italy called Benedict’s decision “immense and unexpected.” Many observers were amazed that such a traditionalist as Benedict would make such an unconventional exit. Others said that Benedict’s decision to step down was one of the most dramatic acts in the history of the papacy. The Pope's 89-year-old brother, the Rev. Georg Ratzinger, said "his age was taking its toll,” adding that he had known what his brother planned to do for several months. Giovanni Maria Vian, the editor of the Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, wrote on Monday that the Pope’s decision “was taken many months
ago,” after his trip to Mexico and Cuba in March 2012. It is extremely rare for a pope to resign: the last pope to step aside was Pope Gregory XII, who resigned in 1415 amid a schism within the Church.
Benedict, the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was elected as the 265th Pope on April 19th, 2005. He was the first German to hold the title in 500 years and at 78, he was also the oldest pope to be elected since 1730. He took the helm just as one of the fiercest storms the Catholic Church has faced in decades – the scandal of child sex abuse by priests – was breaking. A theological conservative before and

during his time as Pope, he has taken traditional positions on homosexuality and women priests, while urging abstinence and continuing opposition to the use of contraceptives. His attempts at inter-faith relations were mixed, with Muslims, Jews and Protestants all taking offence at various times, despite his efforts to reach out and make visits to key holy sites, including those in Jerusalem.
The editor of German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, Bernd Riegert, called the Pope's move "a courageous step, a revolutionary step". "He has helped himself to freedom, he is setting boundaries. No longer will successors be able to cling on to their office." Riegert expressed the hope that the next pope will be "more open to reforms and able to find answers to the Church's crisis in Europe and North America". He noted that the Catholic Church is haemorrhaging members in its centuriesold strongholds, and finding it difficult to recruit new priests.
What the media said
Writing in France's centre-left Le Monde, Stephanie Le Bars said the end of Pope Benedict's papacy is overshadowed by "machinations and plots". She said that his papacy was "marked by a

The popular German tabloid Bild splashed the headline: "Quitting! Now our Pope is going to the monastery". According to Ezio Mauro, chief editor of Italy's La Repubblica daily, the Pope's shock resignation is an "eruption of modernity" in the Vatican. Meanwhile, the Spanish daily El Mundo said Benedict will be remembered as "God's sweeper" – the man who tried to resolve the "numerous problems of the Church that did so much harm to its image".
Father Lombardi said that the Pope would retire first to his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, in the hills outside Rome, and later to a monastery in Vatican City.

National News Rajoy happy with EU budget
EU leaders agreed last Friday on a budget for the period 2014-2020 in which Spain will remain a net recipient of funding rather than a net contributor as proposed in an initial draft.
At a press conference in Brussels after the agreement was reached, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy welcomed the accord under which Spain will receive funding equivalent to 0.20 percent of its GDP. “After an arduous, long and laborious process we have obtained a good agreement.” he said. “We will receive more than we put in; the net balance is 0.20 percent of GDP, compared with 0.15 percent for the current period 2007-2013, therefore we can feel happy.” The overall budget includes a spending cap of

€960 billion, 13 billion less than initially proposed. Outlays will mostly go to agriculture, cohesion spending and scientific research.
Rajoy said the budget represented a show of support for the policies being carried out by countries such as Spain and others within the bloc. He highlighted the creation of a €3-billion fund to help youth unemployment in Europe, of which Spain will receive a third. The unemployment rate in Spain for workers under 25 stands at 55 per cent.
Despite the cut in the overall budget, Spain maintained the allotment for its farmers of €35 billion in direct aid and an increase of three per cent to €8.3 billion in assistance for rural development.

Iberia reduces number of lay-offs
International Airlines Group, the holding company for the merger of British Airways and Iberia, formally presented a labour force adjustment plan (ERE) for the Spanish carrier that reduces the number of jobs to be shed to 3,807 from the 4,500 it initially announced last year.
In documents presented to the Economy and Labour Ministries, IAG said Iberia has to reduce the work force for economic, organisational and production reasons. It said Iberia had lost €850 million between 2008 and September of last year, including €262 million in the first nine months of 2012. As a result, drastic measures were needed to cut costs and improve revenues to make the
company viable. IAG also wants Iberia to cut its routes by 15 per cent this year and for the airline’s employees to accept wage cuts.
Iberia had offered to reduce the number of layoffs to 3,147 in negotiations with the labour unions but failed to reach an agreement with them. After the talks broke down, the unions representing ground staff and cabin crew called for 15 days of strikes during the next weeks, thus avoiding the Easter holiday period at the end of March.
The stoppages are due to take place from February 18th to 22nd, March 4th to 8th and March 18th to 22nd. Public Works Minister

Ana Pastor said Spain could not afford to lose €10 million a day because of the strikes and called for an “agreement and understanding between the two parties”. Pastor met on Monday with Iberia’s chief executive, Rafael Sánchez-Lozano and union representatives, including from the pilots’ union Sepla. She told them she respected the right to strike but would try "by all means available to see that the right to mobility is respected”.

Young Socialist shocks meeting The general secretary of the International Union of Socialist Youth Movements, Spaniard Beatriz Talegon, shocked a meeting of the Union's Council held in Cascais, Portugal, last Saturday when she told the delegates she "was very surprised at how we are trying to make a revolution from a five-star hotel, brought here in luxury cars". She went on: “I ask myself if we can give people solutions for their
problems, we say we understand their suffering because we are Socialists but can we really feel their pain from a five-star hotel?"
She told the delegates from all over the world: "You talk about young people's high unemployment rate, that you are very concerned, but you don't care at all because you haven't even asked the young people attending this meeting for

The final – between Barcelona Regal and Valencia Basket – was at a stadium in Vitoria in the

The spectators were predominantly Basques or Barcelona fans. Crowds at the King's Cup matches have been abusively strident towards the king and the national anthem since the Barcelona-Bilbao

Spain could be the 'next Germany' A report by the Morgan Stanley financial services firm released on Tuesday said Spain is on the way to becoming “the next Germany” thanks to the drop in labour costs arising from the government's reforms
which make Spanish exports more competitive. The team of analysts who wrote the report after visiting Madrid last week said the reverse was happening in Germany. They

US billionaire Sheldon Adelson’s controversial 750-hectare Eurovegas mega-casino complex is to be built near the Madrid dormitory town of Alcorcón, Madrid regional premier Ignacio González announced last Friday at a press conference held together with directors of Sheldon's Las Vegas Sands group.
The group had chosen Madrid over Barcelona for the project last September, but the actual area where it was to be built had not been decided on. The group will begin work on the first of three phases of the project this year, with the second beginning 18 months after the completion of the first, with the whole project due to be finished in 2017. The US firm will put up between 35 and 45 per cent of the investment of
€6.75 billion, and the rest will be funded by banks. The regional premier said the first phase alone will create 40,000 direct jobs and 80,000 indirect ones, while the whole project could generate about a quarter of a million direct and indirect jobs.
Las Vegas Sands’ chief operating officer and president, Michael Leven, said the first phase would involve the construction of four resorts, each with 3,000 rooms, as well as commercial, convention and leisure centres. He said the company would hire 10,000 people directly at its Singapore complex, adding that the vast majority of employees at the Eurovegas complex will be Spanish. “This is a special and very important day for Madrid and Spain,” González told reporters.
“This is an exciting and extraordinary project, the objective of which is to make Madrid the chief centre for conventions in southern Europe.”
The Madrid regional assembly passed a special law last October to meet a series of demands from Adelson. The tax rate on winnings from gaming was reduced from 40 per cent to 10 per cent for the project, and there will be no limit on the height of the towers to be built on the site.
Adelson has also asked for the country's blanket ban on smoking in public places to be lifted on the casino site. Gonzalez said the smoking issue is the responsibility of the central government, but he expected the issue to be resolved in the next few months.

Crisis keeps kids in school
Five crew members died after a lifeboat they were in fell from a cruise ship docked in the port of Santa Cruz de la Palma in the Canary Islands on Sunday.
Three people were also hurt as the boat reportedly fell more than 20m into the sea. Three of those killed were Indonesians,
one came from the Philippines and the other was a Ghanaian. Two of those injured are said to be Greek, and a third Filipino. The accident happened on the Majesty, operated by UK-based Thomson Cruises, during a routine safety drill. An estimated 1,400 people were on board the cruise ship when the accident

they failed last week to post the €8.1 million bond imposed on them.
The ship had been due to sail on Sunday to the Portuguese port of Funchal on the Atlantic island of Madeira. Thomson Cruises said in a statement: "We are working closely with the ship owners and
managers, Louis Cruises, to determine exactly what has happened and provide assistance to those affected." The UK Foreign Office said it was aware of the incident and was "urgently looking into it". The MS Thomson Majesty is believed to sail under a Maltese flag.

there has been a notable reduction in school dropout rates, which were at their lowest point on record - 24.9 per cent - according to a report by the workers Commissions trade union, based on official figures. the figure is considerably better than the 31.9 per cent rate registered in 2008 before the crisis really bit in, but Spain is still among the worst performers in europe, where the average dropout rate in 2011 was 13.5 percent. this number reflects how many 18 to 24-year-olds have stopped studying before getting at least a high school or vocational training diploma, which the european Commission says will be absolutely essential to finding a job by 2020. the eU has set an average dropout target of 10 per cent for 2020. For Spain the target is higher at 15 percent. economists say that getting young people to complete their studies is a crucial step toward abandoning the production model based on unqualified jobs in construction and services.

Recycled clothes scam
the oCU consumer group has released a study warning about the proliferation of used-clothes collection bins in metropolitan areas across the country. it said that many of these donation boxes lack city authorisation, and that some of them are misleading – suggesting a nonprofit goal when they are in fact completely for-profit. the report said this practice hurts the real non-profit and the recycling companies, and "constitutes a betrayal of citizen expectations". a single bin can bring in annual revenues of €3,500, taking into account that a ton of used clothes is sold on the market for €350. "and these organisations place more than one collection bin in the cities, so that their revenues are multiplied by as much as 10 or 20 times," the report said.

The North Korean government confirmed on Monday that it had successfully carried out its third underground nuclear test, a move that has drawn international condemnation. The confirmation came three hours after seismic activity was detected at North Korea's nuclear test site. Monitoring agencies from several nations detected a shallow earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 at 11:57 (02:57 GMT). The US, South Korea and Japan had all warned Pyongyang not to go ahead with the test. China, North Korea's closest ally and biggest trading partner, had also called for restraint. US
President Barack Obama called for "swift" and "credible" international action in response. The United Nations had warned of "significant consequences" if Pyongyang went ahead.
Britain called for a "robust response" from the UN Security Council, which held an emergency meeting on Tuesday in New York to discuss expanding UN sanctions. North Korea previously
conducted nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009. It announced in January that it would conduct a third as a response to UN sanctions that were expanded after a December rocket launch – a move condemned by the UN as a banned test of missile technology.
The US and North Korea's neighbours fear
Pyongyang's ultimate goal is to produce a nuclear device small enough to fit on a long-range missile, something it is not yet believed to have mastered. North Korea said the nuclear test was to "to protect our national security and sovereignty against the reckless hostility of the United States".
Africa TV series Benefits for gay re-edited military couples
The Pentagon will extend some family benefits to same-sex partners of US military members, Defence Secretary Leon Panetta announced on Monday. The benefits include child care, legal help, joint duty assignments, emergency leave, and transportation. Mr Panetta said that while the remaining benefits are blocked by a federal law that does not recognise same-sex marriage, he foresaw a time "when the law will
allow the department to grant full benefits to service members and their dependents, irrespective of sexual orientation".
To qualify, the service member and his or her partner must sign a "declaration of domestic partnership" attesting to the exclusive and committed relationship. The move comes more than two years after the US Congress repealed a ban on openly gay military members.
The BBC has re-edited the final episode of David Attenborough's nature series, Africa, on BBC One to remove a piece of commentary about climate change. In the original programme, broadcast last week, Attenborough said: "Some parts of the continent have become 3.5 degrees Celsius hotter in the past 20 years." However, a BBC spokesman said: "We accept the detail is disputable and the commentary should have reflected that, therefore the line of commentary has been edited out of Sunday's repeat and the
iPlayer version." He confirmed that the claim came from a 2006 paper by the Working Group on Climate Change. In 2011, the BBC denied misleading viewers of Attenborough's frozen planet series with footage of newborn polar bear cubs filmed in an animal park, rather than in the wild. Episode five of the series featured the cubs in a den with their mother, with many people assuming they were born and filmed in the Arctic. But the cubs were actually in a Dutch animal park, as was revealed in behind-thescenes footage on the show's website.

Members of the country's second largest rebel group, the ELn, said on Monday they want proof that two elderly German brothers they are holding are not spies. Uwe and Gunther Breuer, who are 69 and 72 years old, were seized in november. They had been touring South america in a jeep when they were taken in a remote area near the border with Venezuela. Colombian newsweekly Semana last week published a video showing the two brothers preparing their lunch on a camping stove by the side of a dirt road in central Colombia before they were seized. Gunther Breuer describes how he has been travelling the world for the past 18 months, including driving through Iran, Iraq, australia and new Zealand, praising the Colombian people for their "friendliness". World's largest captive croc dies
The largest saltwater crocodile in captivity has died in the Philippines. Officials said the six-metre reptile, weighing more than 1,000kg, flipped over with a bloated stomach and was declared dead several hours later. The crocodile, blamed for the death of at least one person, was caught in September 2011 and then became the star attraction of an eco-tourism park. It was formally declared the world's largest in captivity by Guinness World Records last year. The crocodile, which was given the name Lolong, was captured in the town of Bunawan after a three-week hunt involving dozens of people. The giant reptile, which measured 21 feet and weighed in at 2,370 lb, had begun to draw local and foreign tourists to the town. Bunawan Mayor Edwin Elorde said Lolong had been off colour for a month.

Tesco dumps Five members, three generations die in crash French supplier
Mohammed Eisa Daniel, just one year old, was found in the arms of his dying grandfather after a taxi that was carrying the family crashed in Saudi Arabia, wiping out five members of three generations in the same Newport, Gwent, South Wales family who were on a religious pilgrimage to Mecca. The taxi somersaulted off the motorway, hitting a concrete bridge and ended up in a ditch whilst en route to Jedda.
The dead have been named as Shaukat Ali Hayat, 56, his wife Abida, 54, eldest son Mohammed Isshaq, 33, daughter Saira Zenub, 29, who was due to marry this weekend, and Mohammed's heavily pregnant wife, Bilques, 30. The dead were buried on Monday at a well-known graveyard, the Jannat-ul-
Baqi, in Medina alongside famous names of the Islamic faith.
The South Wales Argus newspaper reported Shaukat's brother Sma Hayat, 58, as saying his sibling was a "well-loved and liked" teacher and writer of Islam adding that Saira Zenub was a very talented locum pharmacist, while Mohammed Isshaq was hoping to do a PhD in neuroscience at university. He said: "Shaukat saw what happened as the car went out of control. He grabbed the baby, clutched it in his arms and cushioned him. The boy (Mohammed) has lost everyone but luckily he's pulled through." Newport West MP Paul Flynn said: "The head of the family came here after serving in the British
Army for a number of years and was a prisoner of war in the Second World War."
Shaurkat's brother Ibrahim is a Labour councillor for Newport's Pillgwenlly ward. Tribute was paid to the family by his colleague Ron Jones, who said it was "a massive and unbelievable tragedy. They were a tremendous family. They worked for us during the election. They were deeply involved in the community and were absolutely upstanding. There are a lot of people who are going to feel their passing very deeply."
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said it has been assisting the victims' relatives following the accident on Friday.

Jobs cut, not bonuses
Owen Paterson, The Environment Secretary, has said that the horsemeat scandal that has spread across Europe appears to be that of “criminal activity”. Another round of talks with the Food Standards Agency took place on Tuesday night. This was the second UK summit in a matter of days. Ministers from the countries affected are also due to meet in Brussels today, Wednesday to discuss what wider action needs to be taken. This has been a nightmare for the big supermarket chains who insist on certain standards and have been let down badly by their suppliers. One supplier, French company Comigel, has been dumped by both Tesco and Findus after it was found that Tesco’s Everyday Value Spaghetti
Bolognese, which was withdrawn last week as a precaution, contained more than 60% horsemeat. This follows Findus finding that their beef supplied by lasagne Comigel was found to contain up to 100% horsemeat. Findus are now considering legal action after an internal investigation indicated the contamination was "not accidental". The company has also been dropped by Aldi. Tim Smith, Tesco's group technical director, said: "The source of the horsemeat is still under investigation by the relevant authorities. The level of contamination suggests that Comigel was not following the appropriate production process for our Tesco product and we will not take food from their facility again."
Grandmother fights on Lindsay Sandiford, the British grandmother from Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, caught trying to smuggle cocaine worth £1.6 million into Bali in May last year is fighting her death sentence through the courts there with her lawyers saying that judges failed to take into account the 56-year-old’s cooperation with the police that led to other convictions. At the time of her trial she claimed that she was forced to smuggle the drugs by a gang who were threatening to hurt her
children. At the time prosecutors said that they were recommending a 15-year jail term but in January this year she was found guilty of the crime and sentenced to death by firing squad. Because of her co-operation with the police on the island, four other suspects alleged to be her accomplices, including Britons Rachel Dougall, Julian Pounder and Paul Beales were all arrested. Dougall, Pounder and Beales have all received sentences ranging from one to six years.
Barclays has announced 3,700 job cuts amid plans to cut £1.7bn in costs and improve standards. Of these job losses, 1,800 will be in its corporate and investment bank and 1,900 will be in European retail and business banking. Some 1,600 jobs have already been cut in the investment banking business since the start of the year, Barclays said. But despite the redundancies, the bank – Britain's second largest – revealed it would still pay £1.85bn in bonuses to staff. On average, payouts in its investment bank were £54,100, and the average bonus across the group was £13,300 – although these are below 2011's levels. LONDON
Officer arrested
A 50-year-old serving police officer has been arrested as part of an investigation into improper payments to police. Officers arrested the man in a dawn raid as part of the Operation Elveden inquiry. He was arrested at his home in the Wimbledon area on suspicion of misconduct in a public office, contrary to Common Law . The Metropolitan Police said he was an officer in the Territorial Policing command based on a south London borough. The officer is being interviewed at a south London police station and a search of his property is being conducted. He is the 60th person to have been arrested as part of Operation Elveden. LONDON
Guilty
Dale Cregan changed his plea to guilty on Tuesday afternoon and has now admitted that he shot PCs Bone, 32, and Hughes, 23, during a gun and grenade attack on September 18th last year. However, he continues to deny murdering a father and son in two separate attacks earlier in the year. The trial continues.

Blaze trial
The trial of Mick and Mairead Philpott, the couple accused of killing their six children in a house fire in Victory Road, Derby on May 11th last year has started. The court heard that they started the blaze as part of a "plan that went horribly wrong". Mr. and Mrs. Philpott's children – Jade, 10, and her brothers John, nine, Jack, eight, Jesse, six, Jayden, five, and Duwayne, 13 – all died after the fire which engulfed their home as they were sleeping. The couple, along with a third defendant, 46-yearold Paul Mosley, deny six separate counts of manslaughter in relation to the deaths. The trial, at Nottingham Crown Court, is expected to last six weeks.
Tragedy strikes tour Heathrow Cornwall based sea shanty group Fisherman’s Friends were due to play at the G Live concert venue in Guildford, Surrey when a metal loading door fell on two of the 10-piece group at around mid-day last Saturday.
Tour manager Paul McMullen died at the scene despite efforts to save him by paramedics. It is understood that Mr. McMullen died from the effects of crushing injuries to his legs and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second member of the group, Trevor Grills, 54, suffered serious head injuries after being hit by the falling metal door and died on Monday night. He had been taken from the scene to St. George’s Hospital in Tooting, London.

In a statement, the Port Isaac 10-piece band paid tribute to Mr Grills as "a much-loved and valued friend". A spokesman added: "We are all devastated. The Fisherman's Friends announce with great sadness that their friend and fellow band member Trevor Grills passed away last night as a result of severe head injuries inflicted during an accident on Saturday February 9th. Trevor was a much-loved and valued friend to all of us and was an integral part of the Port Isaac community. He will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with Trevor's family at this very difficult time."
Darcus Beese, president of Island Records, the group's label, added: "We are all deeply saddened at losing Trevor. The Fisherman's Friends are exactly that: life-long partners in all they do and our thoughts and prayers go out to them and Trevor's family and friends." The concert was cancelled following the tragedy but the venue has since reopened.
The Health and Safety Executive has been informed of the accident, Surrey Police confirmed.
Fans of Fisherman’s Friends have paid tribute to Mr Grills, one of the younger members of the band who often took the lead in its more melancholic numbers.
Writing on the group's Facebook page, Sarah Lee said: "Words seem pointless, but apart from sending you all love there's not much else we can offer. Know that you are in our hearts at this terribly sad time." Fellow fan Charlie Mason added: "Such sad news – we saw you all in Cheltenham on Thursday, and loved it – Trevor bought joy to people – a gift few of us have. We've lost someone special." Steph Woodhouse wrote: "Oh such dreadful news, was hoping against hope he would pull through. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all the village that has welcomed us so warmly over the years. Thinking of Port Isaac."
fares hike Heathrow Airport, the main London air hub for international travel has long been the subject of rows and debates over whether it should be allowed to expand with furious protests against a proposed new runway in the press over the last few years. The airport accounts for around 78% of all long-haul flights to and from the UK.
Now officials at the airport have announced they want to use a further £3 billion of private investment to improve the airport but they want to pass on the cost of the investment to passengers using the airport. The proposals include the opening of the new Terminal 2 next year, improved check-in and baggage facilities, and more customer service training for staff. However, the Civil Aviation Authority have yet to approve the plans which would result in passenger fees being raised from the present
£19.33 to as much as £27.30 in 2018/19.
Heathrow chief executive Colin Matthews said: "Heathrow is the UK's only hub airport and a strategically important national infrastructure asset. Heathrow faces stiff competition from other European hubs and we must continue to improve the service we offer passengers and airlines. We have invested billions of pounds in new facilities such as Terminal 5 in recent years and passengers say they have noticed the difference. Our plan for a further £3bn of private-sector investment will further improve the airport for passengers. The plan represents good value for money for airlines and passengers and comes at no cost to taxpayers."
Passengers in the meantime are furious about the possible increase in fares saying that airlines are trying to squeeze yet more cash out of them.

Prince bids farewell Cordoba mosque to his namesake targeted for tax Crown Prince Felipe and Defence minister Pedro Morenes were in Rota base last week to bid farewell to the flagship Principe de Asturias before it set off on its last sea voyage – to Ferrol in Galicia, where it will be dismantled and sold as scrap.
Minister Morenes said it was a sad end for such a noble vessel but that it was cheaper to build a new flagship – the Juan Carlos I – than spend millions on modernising the Principe de Asturias. Prince Felipe took several photos of the ship and its crew and said that having been the last person to land on the aircraft carrier would be one of his most treasured memories.
The heir to the throne traditionally holds the title Prince of Asturias in honour of that region's successful stand against the invading Moors. The only exception was
King Juan Carlos who was given the title Prince of Spain by Franco to avoid having to name him his heir in the cat-and-mouse game the dictator played for years with the present king's father.
Linea Directa first to go mobile
Linea Directa becomes the first insurer to sell its products via mobile telephone. Línea Directa has launched its new website for mobiles, which makes it the first insurance company to distribute its products via smartphones. The new site, which uses xhtml technology, is compatible with the iOS, Android and Blackberry operating systems and is capable of offering customers a price in under three minutes while asking them no more than 10 questions. In addition, unlike other websites, which use “masks” in their mobile versions, Línea Directa’s new quoting system is 100% adapted to smartphone technology.
The website will initially be available for offering car insurance quotes and will then be extended to cover the company’s motorbike and home insurance sectors. Linea Directa’s new page
for smartphones also includes information on the insurer’s main products and services and offers a click-to-call service which allows users to send a request for the company to call them if they have any questions or if they wish to purchase the policy with the help of an operator.
With this new tool, the insurer hopes to record over 150,000 quotes per year and strengthen its position as the leader in Internet and mobile applications. The new quoting system has been
designed taking into account aspects such as Internet surfing habits, easy operability, simplicity and user-friendliness for the customer.
Línea Directa’s commitment to mobile technology is part of the growing importance of Internet searches on smartphones, due to the fact that in 2015 over half of all organic searches on the Internet will be carried out using these devices.

Moral authority
O
W
n last Wednesday's Breakfast with TVE programme, Madrid Socialist Party leader Tomas Gomez said Mariano Rajoy does not have the moral authority to continue governing the country. One of the journalists on that morning's panel pointed out that the most recent opinion polls indicate that people trust the PM more than they trust Socialist Party general secretary Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba. She didn't go as far as saying that Rubalcaba has no moral authority but the insinuation was there.
mere 47 – but Izquierda Unida (IU), which won 11 seats, came to their rescue.
A
f someone ever takes the lid off that cesspool called Seville, the stink will rise so high that God and all his angels will have to flee to Hell to get away from it.
R
ight now, some 700 politicians, mainly at local level, are being investigated for corruption. As another journalist on the same programme on another morning pointed out last week, just over half are Socialists, a third are from the PP and the rest are distributed among the other parties.
nother journalist asked if Rubalcaba was unaware of the ERE scandal in Andalucia. EREs are subsidies awarded to companies that have to downsize but can't afford workers' severance payments – and there's a lot of them right now. Iberia has just applied for one to get rid of more than 3,000 workers.
T
he ERE scandal in Seville surfaced just before last year's regional election, probably in the hope that it would encourage people to vote for the Partido Popular. (The judge leading the investigation was said to be a PP supporter.) Put in a nutshell, some 1.2 billion euros worth of EREs have "gone missing" in the past 10 years. This means that the Socialist Junta de Andalucia has no idea where the money went, although the chauffeur of one Junta labour department official said his boss had spent some €45,000 a month on cocaine and prostitutes, whom he'd shared with the chauffeur. Other large sums of money had been given to "friends" of the Junta and had been spent on anything but workers' severance pay, while thousands of imaginary workers did receive it. The scandal was building up a nice momentum and if the PP's Javier Arenas had obtained a majority in the March 25th election, it would have made all other scandals put together look like child's play. But the unions came to the aid of the party and called a general strike for March 29th, two days short of the 100-days honeymoon normally granted to a new PM. This meant they could harp on about the cuts Rajoy had already made as well as the cuts they alleged he intended to make to put the fear of God in the voters and make them prefer the devil they knew.
A
s a result, Javier won 50 seats, five short of the majority he needed. The Socialists won the lowest number of seats ever in their 32year-long dictatorship in Andalucia – a
e now have the hilarious spectacle of IU leader Cayo Lara condemning the government's cuts in Madrid while the IU supports the Socialists' cuts in Andalucia. He was also the first to call for Rajoy's resignation after the infamous Barcenas papers scandal broke last week. He obviously hasn't heard about Junta premier Jose Antonio Griñan continuing to pay out EREs for imaginary workers in order "maintain social peace". That is, if you throw money at all and sundry they'll be too busy spending it to bother about starting a revolution – or to vote him out.
I
A
s for the Barcenas scandal, it was already slipping out of the headlines before the Pope's shock resignation took over the front page of every newspaper in the world. Now there's a man with moral authority. It takes guts to be the first pope to resign in more than 600 years and hopefully future popes will follow his example. It's painful to watch a man gradually get weaker and sicker until death relieves him of his mortal coil. (Nice touch of poetry no longer in use. It's derived from 16th century English and means "the bustle and turmoil of this mortal life". "Mortal coil" – along with "the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune," "to sleep, perchance to dream" and "ay, there’s the rub" – is part of Hamlet's "To be or not to be" speech, which most writers use shamelessly from time to time.
A
www.thenewsonline.es
s for Rubalcaba, I suspected he could have been behind the Barcenas affair but it now looks as if Barcenas himself is the one playing with people's heads, as Martin Delfin said to me the other day. It's another cesspool, perhaps not as big as the one in Seville, and Rubalcaba should have had enough political savvy – or moral authority – to keep away from it.
Martin Delfín
She won’t go away Writes for the English language version of
E
ven if it seemed like one, you really can’t call it a great comeback because she was only gone for a moment. Esperanza Aguirre, the feisty former Madrid regional premier, has been standing in the shadows for the past five months, but still wielding her powerful influence inside the Popular Party (PP). Last September, she surprised everyone by standing down from her elected post – a job she had held since 2003 – to spend more time with her family. But to ensure that no one would forget her name or lose the leverage she worked so hard to build, Aguirre kept her position as president of Madrid’s PP chapter. The prime minister’s internal party faction breathed a sigh of relief when she stood down from the premiership; she would no longer be a daily news fixture for reporters who scouted her out to hear unabashed and sometimes abrasive opinions. Then, she announced two weeks ago that she had accepted a job at a private headhunting firm in Barcelona, which would keep her perhaps even more busy and away from the vicissitudes of party politics. This offered further ease to Mariano Rajoy and his supporters. What they didn’t foresee was the scathing fallout that has been raining down since the release of balance sheets handwritten by former PP treasurer Luis Bárcenas that detail payments made to top party officials over the course of 20 years from a purported slush fund.
L
ast week, Aguirre presided over an intense PP Madrid chapter meeting in which she came down hard on just about everyone in the party whose names have been in the news lately. She chastised the national party leaders for the failures at effective damage control, with special browbeating at secretary general María Dolores de Cospedal, whom Aguirre criticized for not being more energetic when she appeared before the cameras to attack Bárcenas’ bookkeeping. De Cospedal instead put the monkey on the back of opposition challenging the Socialists also to open up their financial records. At that closed door meeting, Aguirre got into a fray, according to witnesses who were present, with Madrid Mayor Ana Botella for also being weak in the way she has been handling the Madrid Arena Halloween tragedy in which five young women died after they were crushed to death by a massive crowd inside an overpacked city-run venue. Botella had complained that she believed she wasn’t getting enough support from the party’s national leadership to help her defend her administration which has come under fire for the fatal incident. The controversy cost her three appointed officials, including her deputy mayor, who resigned
B
under pressure. The mayor’s moaning set off Aguirre who went on a tirade, according to those present.
ut the biggest injury came when the outspoken Aguirre told Madrid PP officials that if it had been up to her, Health Minister Ana Mato would have been out on the streets by now. Mato’s name surfaced in a sideline controversy emerging from the Bárcenas scandal. A police investigative report released last week alleged that she and her estranged husband, Jesús Sepúlveda, the former mayor of Madrid’s upscale satellite town Pozuelo de Alcarcón, received gifts, including trips, from corrupt businessmen who formed the Gürtel network. Mato, who still has Rajoy’s support, has only issued one public denial. Saying that she has always paid for her family’s expenses while clarifying that Sepúlveda was actually her ex-husband, Mato insisted that a court investigative judge looking into the Gürtel case cleared her years back of any wrongdoing. But a further inquiry showed that at the time of the alleged Gürtel gift-giving, the now-health minister and disgraced mayor, who resigned his post when he was implicated in the Gürtel case, were still married at the time of the alleged payoffs between 2000-2004. Matters were made worse when it was also learned that Sepúlveda was still on the PP payroll as a party advisor. Party officials were quick to point out that he works from home and doesn’t maintain an office at the PP headquarters. One official explained that it was legally impossible to fire someone just because they are the target of a criminal investigation. Facing public uproar, De Cospedal, the party secretary general, announced on Monday that Sepúlveda was no longer providing services for the PP.
I
f Rajoy and his faction thought that Aguirre was going to quietly demilitarize herself as she took up new opportunities in the private sector, they were immeasurably mistaken. Aguirre hinted after the heated meeting that she would be around for some time as she called for a complete "democratic rejuvenation" of Spain's political structures starting with introducing open slates so voters can elect their own candidates to represent them. The former premier explained that reforms were needed to keep "professional politicians" from making a living from politics. "You can count on me to help with that," she said. All our profile used to manufacture our products is quality assured prior to leaving the premises. We only use Veka profile for all our UPVC. Veka is a worldwide company with years of experience in the PVC field. All our profile has a tropical mix which is designed to stop the sun discolouring the whiteness of the UPVC over a period of time. You can find further details on Veka at www.veka.es. For specialist colour requirements we have many samples from wood grains, different colours and the standard white. We offer a bespoke colour range to match any colour in satin, gloss or matt finish. At D&M Projects security is of the upmost importance to us. All our windows and doors come with steel reinforcing for
maximum strength and support and are supplied with locking handles. We can also offer extra security features which can be discussed with you at the time of your enquiry. We take our profession seriously, giving quality customer service, professional advice and help coupled with a great after care service. We use a range of persianas (shutters) manufactured by PERSAX and these carry a two- year guarantee. We can provide a full range of glass combinations and styles, which will be discussed at the time of your enquiry. ADVERTISING FEATURE
Life Can Be So Easy was established in 2011 in the centre of the Costa del Sol, Fuengirola. It is company made up of a team of young entepeneurs who decided to run a business focussing on services and products dedicated to the expatriate market in Spain. Their team consists of four members who together speak over seven languages. Could you give us a brief overview of Life Can Be So Easy S.L. and its team members?
LCBSE is a motivated international team of experienced business people in Spain, skilled in seven languages. We are a Finnish-German business and our services are focused on long- and shortterm residents living in Spain who need a standard package of insurances and other services. Our main target customers are the Scandinavian, German and English communities because of the wide range of languages spoken by our employees and owners. We have Finnish, Norwegian, German and English customers as well as Spanish customers – as we are a fully Spanishspeaking business.
How do you motivate yourselves every day in such a difficult economic environment?
We remind ourselves that we will make the best out of it day by day, and this philosophy makes us the best in what we want to achieve. Our first contact with the client is the most important and where we transmit the confidence due to our knowledge. Whatever product we sell we believe that our sales will be done based on the truth and the client knows what she/he is buying. We will walk the extra mile and give the time so as not to leave out any detail, making things absolutely clear in a place where the language is sometimes the biggest barrier for our customers.
What are your short term goals as an insurance agent? In the short term we are orientated to grow our customer base with our existing clients, selling the products we believe in. We do our best to make this

happen and we expect the same from our partners. We know that the market we are in is growing big time and we would like to gain the trust of this audience fast – but trust takes time to establish and we are oriented to have patience. We know that insurance is a serious business and to gain and retain clients is not an easy job. There have been, in some cases, bad experiences in the past related to easy sales that left lots of questions open for customers and didn’t make a clear view of all the cover.
What about in 2-3 years time?

And what about Spain and its culture, what do

On the one hand, in the long term we would like to become the reference agency in our area for the clients we are targeting and who due to our language skills and experience would visit us for advice. On the other hand we would like to have built up a stable and growing business based on the confidence and positive experiences of our clients.
Most of all we like the weather and its climate as well as the Spanish hospitality. We think this is also the reason that most of our customers are choosing Spain as a place to live or have their second home. It is still in Europe and flight connections make it attractive because in a short time you can be back in your home country.

Do you want BAM dinner a great time to help? Helping The Royal British Legion to deliver their Poppy Support services to those who have served in the Armed Forces and their families, volunteer caseworkers and visitors are the face of the Legion. You do not need any previous experience to be a volunteer caseworker or visitor, but previous knowledge, training or even an interest in a health, social services or a welfare field can be a real advantage, as well as the ability to speak Spanish. All volunteers are offered free training and out-ofpocket expenses. Volunteer caseworkers are asked to visit with people in their own homes, and conduct informal interviews and assessments. This includes talking to people about their situation and gathering important personal information. Caseworkers are asked to write down their observations and findings in the form of a report and provide this to a Legion case manager. The role requires a special kind of volunteer, someone with patience,

Meet Clooney – he is such a delightful dog. He was born around January 2011 and this boy is wonderful with an amazing character, calm: kind and very loving.
He will make a first class pet to a kind and loving family.

The Wings Appeal Trophy A race to Awards - The Povey Trophy save the cats
The Povey Trophy, which depicts the RAF Memorial Flight in formation, is presented annually by the Royal Air Forces Association Benalmádena Branch, to the establishment which collects the most money for the Wings Appeal (the RAFA equivalent of the Poppy Appeal), and last year the winner was again Bar Aladino in Carihuela. The previous year their win sparked some fierce competition between nearby bars and restaurants who all wanted the trophy. However, Aladinos triumphed again. Runners-up were the

The trophies were presented by the Branch President, Mr Derek Brown, together with the Chairman; Fred Briggs, and several branch members and customers. Thanks go to all who donated their "loose change" to this worthwhile cause and a big thank you to all who contributed in the many establishments around the region who collect on their behalf. Tim Woodman (above) of GWT Build, Gibraltar, is running in the Seville Marathon on Sunday 24th February in aid of the “Gift Of Life” cat rescue organisation based in Alhaurin el Grande and “Stray Cats Spain” based in Los Barrios in the Cadiz area.
Both charities rescue cats from the killing stations where they are waiting on “death row” – with some having as little as hours left to live if not taken away by such charities – and from off the streets and bins or any dangerous situations. They are then blood tested, neutered and vaccinated and, after they are fully rehabilitated with the charities, they try
to find them homes either here in Spain (which is very difficult) or they are taken to the UK and fostered by trusted friends until they are adopted into loving homes. All of this takes a great deal of money as you can imagine and Tim is running to raise funds so that more of these poor creatures can be rescued. If you can find a few pennies (or more if possible!) to sponsor Tim please contact Denise from Gift Of Life either by phone on 630 197 435 or email info@cat-and-dogworld.com Any and all donations will be most gratefully received.

A SMART way to measure your electricity Last week I started telling you about the new SMART meters. In part two you will learn more about how these can affect you.
A very important integrated function of the SMART Meter is the control and automatic overload protection of your ‘potencia contratada’ (contracted power in KW’s). This was previously controlled by your Interruptor de Control de Potencia (ICP) fitted and sealed in your fuse box. With a SMART Meter installed, if you exceed your contracted power the supply will be disconnected at the meter. The supply can only be reconnected by following a simple procedure at the main fuse box. Here are some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) and my advice:
Q. Endesa changed my neighbour’s meter but have not changed mine, is there a problem? A. If Endesa intend changing your meter they will notify you in writing to confirm the date when
they will change your meter. If you receive your electricity bills then you may receive a letter in due course. If your billing address is incorrect and you do not receive electricity bills then you will not receive the meter change notification letter if Endesa send it. Endesa are currently replacing meters for all consumers with contracts of 15KW or less. This includes all single-phase customers, as the maximum power available on single-phase is only 11,5KW and 3phase customers below 15KW. If you are contracted at 15,1KW or more you may already have a digital ‘MAXIMETRO’ which will not be replaced. Q. I have received a letter from Endesa about changing my electricity meter, do I need to be concerned? A. Potentially yes, the installation of your SMART meter poses a huge problem if you do not have an ICP fitted and your ‘potencia contratada’ is not sufficient for all the
appliances in your home. If you do not have an ICP fitted then you have previously been able to draw more power through your supply than you are contracted for. You are now likely to experience regular power outages with your SMART meter, due to overloading. If you do have an ICP fitted, assuming it has not been tampered with, and it has not tripped regularly in the past then you should not experience any problems with your new meter installed. Check your last electricity bill and confirm your ‘potencia contratada’. If it is very low your only option is to upgrade your installation and increase the power contracted with your supplier. Q. I recently had a new digital meter installed, now my electricity keeps tripping off, can I upgrade? One of the benefits of SMART metering is the ability to make contract changes (power upgrades, tariff modifications, connections and disconnections) via

part 2
telephone or internet, changes can be implemented within 24 hours, reprogramming your meter remotely. However power upgrades will only be permitted up to the maximum power specified in your boletín. If you are already contracted at this maximum amount then you will need to present a new boletín. This may involve a lot of work on your electricity supply and electrical installation to ensure it is compliant with the latest wiring regulations in Spain.
If you are concerned or have any questions regarding your electricity supply, contact me to arrange an inspection, audit and load-test of your installation. If necessary I can prepare a quote to upgrade your supply and provide a new boletín in order to upgrade your ‘potencia contratada’ before your new Smart meter is installed!

Tea Dance is a cuppa good news for Cudeca Vivian Benveniste triumphed one again by organising a Tea Dance at Tikitano on the 6th February 2013.
The tickets sold out very quickly and it was well attended by over 100 people. Every one enjoyed a traditional English Tea of scones cream and jam, Victoria Sponge and a selection of sandwiches.
It was a social event and incorporated a raffle for Cudeca, which raised a fantastic 475€. One of the many prizes that had been donated was a voucher for €200 to be used for a pair of designer sunglasses. Lea Mullins who is an International Ballroom Champion taught several dances during the afternoon.
Vivian will be taking bookings for the next Tea Dance which is on the 6th March. There will be various events during 2013 including a '60s and '70s evening on the 22nd May. This will culminate in their main Charity Event in aid of Cudeca later in the year. Cudeca is sincerely grateful for the funds received from this event.

Passion In Art
With Valentine’s Day coming up tomorrow, what better way to spend some of the weekend than visiting the Passion In Art exhibition taking place this Sunday, February 17th, from noon until 6pm at the fabulous Villa Padierna Hotel, Benahavis, Marbella. This will be an exhibition of the best artists on the Costa del Sol with demonstrations running and you will even have the opportunity to “try it yourself”. Chandy Haggett, based in Coin will be giving demonstrations of her fabulous silk screen printing that captures the essence of living in Spain. Her recent works have been of life surrounding the ferias and romerias and you will be able to see for yourself just how Chandy captures this aspect of Spanish life. Arriving in Andalucia some 30 years ago, she fell in love with the life and the people and her prints show it. You will be able to have-a-go and to purchase an original print if you see something you like at incredibly reasonable prices. Along with Chandy at
the exhibition is Joaquin Aguilera, sculpter and painter and one of Andalucia’s best loved teachers. His Monumento del Turista and Ofelia can be seen in Estepona. Other artists include Francisco Alarcon, Enar Cruz, Lothar Cames, Rod Friend who, along with his pastels, also uses stained glass with a backlighting system that means they can be hung anywhere. Lily Kojman, Charli Leniston, David Marshall, Ann Ridge, Paddy Robinson, Vivienne Whiffen and Richard Wood will all be there too. Possibly the most unusual thing about this exhibition will be the appearance of John Myatt who is the forger famed for his part in the most

Colonel Robert Find Stewart DSO to The speak at dinner Fish! Conservatives Abroad are very honoured to welcome Colonel Robert “Bob” Stewart DSO MP as their after dinner speaker at Tamisa Golf Hotel on Friday 22nd February.
Prior to becoming an MP Colonel Stewart, who trained at Sandhurst, was a British Army officer and former UN Commander in Bosnia, having also served in a number of other front line zones. He was described as the “soldier’s soldier”. Recently interviewed he said he is a right-wing Tory, and defence is the first duty of government. In his view, Britain is woefully defended at the moment.
He is an experienced and motivational speaker and can hold any audience with his fascinating stories of his time in the British army, the challenges he faced and his current political views. Hear what he has to say, tickets are available from Ann on 952 591590.
Get it ready This weekend when you have nothing to do for a few minutes, why not use the time to have a look around your house or apartment, garden, garage and everywhere else to see what you can find that is gathering dust and you don’t really use anymore. Why? Because you can make some money out of it! Next week, on Saturday 23rd is the re-start of the popular JK’s charity auction and this month proceeds will go to Animals In Distress who badly need donations. You will keep most of the money but will give a small amount to the charity from whatever your “lot” goes for.
The new venue is The Olive Tree in Coin (as JK’s has recently closed) and you can find them on the raised piece of road just between the Cantarranas industrial area and the roundabout for the road that takes you to Alhaurin. Take your “stuff” along any time from 11am for the auction that starts at 2pm.For more information call Tracey on 670 374 191

Hi t c Hc o c k Directed by Sacha Gervasi Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlet Johansson
Movie buffs include Alfred Hitchcock among one of the leading film directors of all time and his place in the pantheon was strengthened last year when his film Vertigo was nominated as the best movie of all time. It’s a great movie. But if you stopped ten people in the street and asked them to name a Hitchcock movie what’s the betting that at least eight would immediately say Psycho – his most profitable and unnervingly frightening
film. Hitchcock concentrates on that period of the director’s life, when he was mortgaging himself to the hilt to make the film after Paramount got cold feet, and the relationship with his wife and partner Alma Reville (Mirren), his collaborator for many decades. She keeps Hitch (Hopkins, recognisable under a ton of make-up and prosthetics but still compelling) on the straight and narrow and even does her best to stop his girth from ever

expanding. The family home is used to raise the collateral to make the movie and Janet Leigh (Johansson) is selected to play the lead role – whose death in the infamous shower scene still has the power to shock decades later.
Basically the movie is a love story about one of the most influential filmmakers of the last century whose position at the top of the tree will always be secure and his
wife. Hitch was an extraordinary man whose reputation for creepiness and for developing obsessions with his leading ladies has now become part of Hollywood folklore. You see some of that here as the story unfolds of the making of one of cinema’s most famous and influential movies. It’s a treat for movie buffs and for Hitchcock fans and benefits from great performances from the leads.
Eric Clapton, 'Old Sock'
Due out on his own Bushbranch label, Old Sock will include two new originals – "Every Little" and "Gotta Get Over" – and his versions of 10 of the guitarist's favourite songs from throughout his life. The album also includes several guests: blues legend JJ Cale lends backing vocals and
guitar on "Angel," R&B singer Chaka Khan sings back-up on "Get On Over," Clapton's band mate from the Blind Faith days Steve Winwood plays organ on "Still Got the Blues" and Paul McCartney plays bass and sings on "All of Me."
Clapton covers a myriad of styles from rock and blues (Gary Moore's "Still Got The Blues" and Leadbelly's "Goodnight
Irene), reggae (Peter Tosh's "Till Your Well Runs Dry") and jazz standards ("All of Me," and George and Ira Gershwin's "Love Is Here to Stay").
Following the release of Old Sock, Clapton will embark on a U.S. arena tour this spring, culminating with his Crossroads Guitar Festival at Madison Square Garden, which will feature performances

adly the same cannot be said for the movie adaptation of her classic intrigue “My Cousin Rachel”. Watching a bad adaptation of a book the viewer has not read can prove confusing, but this movie is even more confusing if you have read the book! It was as though random chunks of the book had been lifted and poorly cobbled together.
from artists including B.B. King, Buddy Guy, the Allman Brothers Band, John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr.
nfortunately the naïve Philip falls for Rachel and his obsession for her constantly conflicts with his suspicions of her motives. A young Burton seemed to rush his lines and the commanding presence he was later famous for was sadly under developed. Strangely enough his performance as Philip gained him his first Oscar nomination, which he quite rightly did not win.
A
s for Miss de Havilland – well, what can I say? Apart from the irritatingly wholesome
Melanie, Scarlet O’Hara’s long suffering buddy in “Gone with the Wind”, she hasn’t done anything that memorable. “My Cousin Rachel” was packed with character, charming and evil at the same time, and obviously beyond Olivia de Havilland’s capabilities. Think of a young Betty Davis – and you are on the right lines!
T
he character of Rainaldi, Rachel’s friend, advisor and who knew what else, was the real villain of the piece and reading the book, I found myself mentally booing and hissing whenever he appeared! In the film, he comes across as quite mild and insignificant and much of the rude and cutting dialogue he had with Philip was lost.
W
e are given to believe that the story is set during the 1700s, although Ms. du Maurier’s book does not specify and we draw our own conclusions from its horse and carriage era. Goodness knows what the Americans think the English wore at that time, but some of the costumes were a little short of ridiculous!
T
he sets were extremely poor, which was probably a good thing, due to the fact that Burton destroyed one of them in a temper. That said, with a good script and acting, that should hardly matter, but the whole interaction between Philip and his tenants and staff, which established the young man’s demeanor was overlooked entirely!
I
naccurate, disappointing, confusing – there aren’t enough adjectives to describe it. Do yourself a favour and stick to the book!

For week commencing 13th February
You are having a change of perspective, seeing things in a different way this week, like you are stepping back and can finally see a much broader view than you have been able to previously. This can feel like liberation from the wounds of the past and is likely to catapult you into new areas with optimism and joy. Prepare for some unexpected and unusual steps forward to be revealed, it could quite possibly lead you into territory that will give you a stronger foothold. Taking a sudden shift in direction, one you have recently considered to be a better way forward, will leave plenty of room for adjustment but the overall basis of this plan will help to straighten things out and put things right. However, just when you thought something was done, inside of you there is a voice telling you to give it one more go, one more sincere surge of your best effort. Proceed with an open mind even if things seem a bit radical. Perhaps you are feeling a bit out of control like you are being pushed beyond your emotional comfort zone. There is a balancing influence coming your way soon that will allow you to feel more in sync with yourself. It is likely to be the unknown that is creating concern but if you just let go of worrying you will see that things have a way of working out in the end. Make sure you have plenty of rest and relaxation time. A part of you is craving the comforts of home and all that the space can provide and yet another part of you is feeling restless and unsettled. The inner rebellion is rising within you and you will really want to try new things. If something has been weighing you down then this will be the impetus to give you a kick to start an adventure. Ingenuity fills your consciousness and gives you a clear sense of where to direct your attention, something will set you apart from the rest this week. Barriers are being broken down and a new wind is blowing through the doors of your heart. There is a transformation occurring in a key relationship, one that you could have thought would never change. As one door closes you will soon find that a few more will open. You may need to put yourself out on a limb to show the degree of your commitment and once this proof has been acknowledged the pathway becomes clearer. You are going to get a second chance at something, simply because the better timing is now or you are ready now whereas you were not back then. This week is all about clearing out the old to make way for the new and you perhaps have something you need to say within a close relationship – there will be a strong instinct to come up and out with it. Let this impulse come forth and let it heal your life so that you can move happily on.
Is something lacking or missing? You may have found yourself hesitating lately as you are not feeling quite right about a certain arrangement, you could also be unsure of where it will all lead and it has planted some seeds of doubt. Alarm bells may ring surrounding the things that are not where you want them to be. Do not dwell too much as this could become larger than life in your mind. rd September 23 By thinking out of the box and leading with your heart the breakthrough you October 22nd need will show itself.
LIBRA
SCORPIO October 23rd November 21st
There is a missing link that you will discover this week, it could always have been plainly in sight but you did not realise it until now. Whatever this is it is likely to be the key to everything, the way forward. Once you uncover this it totally changes not only how you move forward but how fast you intend to go. With this new information you will be able to make revolutionary changes in your life and emotional changes to your personal life.

calm and you do not tend to indulge in worrying and are optimistic about most things. However, something is playing on your mind, the good news is by the weekend you will see things with more objectivity and this will allow you to find a space of detachment that allows you to calm those inner oceans and feel more aligned with yourself again. Positivity and hope return. Whatever has felt uncomfortably foreign or displaced in your life, whatever has caused an inner chill, prepare for this to all change shortly, trust that an energetic tidal shift is on its way, giving you a break from all the extra stress you have been under lately. Be aware that when you are under such pressure there is a tendency to make a mountain out of a molehill. A certain stage is now being set, where you can be the director of this play or a member of the audience – the choice is yours. Your thinking may have stopped you from doing something about a specific thing that is impeding your life. It is time for a perceived obstacle to be removed and lifted from your path. You need to over the next few days follow certain steps to ensure that whatever was in your way will not be coming back. You are turning a clear corner and you will be recognised for what you bring to the table. Romance is on its way so be prepared to be swept off your feet.
It is time to step up and stand committed and strong in a certain direction as the more conviction you have the better and more energetic you will feel. You will soon be shown something that will help you in your choice making, either through a dream or from some obvious sign that you see on your daily travels. This is definitely not the week to take a back seat as you are starting a new cycle linked with your desires.

Beef products are not a health risk All processed beef products are safe to eat but consumers must be prepared for more unwelcome news in the ongoing horsemeat scandal, Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said on Monday. He added that it looked as if an "extensive" criminal conspiracy may have taken place and that legal action began in continental Europe on Monday. Mr Paterson has already said a moratorium on EU meat imports, which has been called for, is not allowed under EU rules. In France, the government has summoned meat industry representatives to talks and some ready meals were withdrawn after horsemeat was found in some beef-labelled foods sold in Europe. Mr Paterson said reports from France suggested the problem had been pinned down to two abattoirs in Romania.
The controversy surrounding contamination of meat products has spread all over Europe. Last month, Irish food inspectors announced they had found horsemeat in some burgers stocked by a number of UK supermarket chains, including Tesco, Iceland and Lidl. Mr Paterson said a factory in Luxembourg, which has been linked to the French cases, had to issue warnings to 16 different countries. Mr Paterson added that the Food Standards Agency's (FSA) advice was to continue buying and eating processed beef products, but if any evidence of a serious threat to health emerged "we will act very swiftly". The FSA has ordered food businesses to conduct authenticity tests on all beef products for significant levels of horsemeat – the deadline
for the first set of results is Friday, February 15th.
Last week Findus UK took its frozen beef lasagne, made by the Comigel food processing company in France, off the shelves after some were found to have up to 100% horsemeat in them. Findus UK said the only product on sale in the UK using ingredients from the French supplier had been its beef lasagne and all other beef products on sale in the UK had been DNAtested and cleared. Six French supermarket chains – Carrefour, Monoprix, Auchan, Casino, Cora, and
Picard – have also withdrawn ready-meals from Findus and Comigel. Findus France has said it will take action in the French courts, believing itself to be the victim of fraud. But the company that supplied the meat, Spanghero – based in southern France – has also said it was the victim of fraud and intends to sue its Romanian supplier. Constantin Savu, a representative of Romania's National Food Safety Authority, said more than 25 abattoirs there were authorised not only to butcher horsemeat but also to export it within the EU.
Small butchers benefit
High Street butchers in the UK say they are experiencing a spike in trade, some by as much as 30%. A spokesman for the Q Guild representing 130 butchers across England, Scotland and Wales, said: "It is obviously great news

The BAFTAs took place last weekend and there were a few surprises
Helen Mirren - great dress but, oh dear, pink hair?!
… but most were pretty well turned out and behaved themselves Most people would agree that pink, green, blue or even tiger print hair can look fine if you happen to be under 25 years old.
After that, you really are pushing it to the point where, after a certain age, unsubtly coloured hair is not only inappropriate, it is also unflattering, ageing and makes you look like mutton trying to dress as lamb. Unfortunately Dame Helen
Mirren’s best friend hadn’t told her that and she turned up with a beautiful frock on, lovely shawl and a pretty good hair cut but – and it’s a huge BUT – her hair was pink! And what on earth was her hairdresser thinking of? By all means try something like this out for a week or two at home and away from the spotlight but, with millions watching worldwide? Ouch! She said that she had seen a contestant on America’s New Top Model with the same colour and decided to copy her
but, the wanna-be model was way under thirty-years-old.
Ms Mirren was due to present the Best Leading Actor award but was replaced by American actress Sarah Jessica Parker.
Everybody thought she had a good chance of catching the gong for her part in Hitchcock but she got pipped at the post by a surprising win by Emmanuelle Riva, 85, for her part as Anne, a retired music teacher in the French film
Amour. Anne slides into not being able to remember or respond to anything and it shows the relationship between her and husband Georges in their last few months together. But at least the story tells us the end first so we know what to expect of this dark film and it is a study of a couple’s love. Some say that any publicity is good publicity, and it certainly got this usually (off screen at least) well-turned-out and elegant woman noticed.
And the winner is... BAFTA 2013 results Best Film ARGO – Grant Heslov, Ben Affleck, George Clooney. Producer George Clooney, who was supposed to direct Argo but then turned it over to Ben Affleck, accepted the statue. Leading Actor DANIEL DAY-LEWIS for his part as Lincoln. Daniel Day-Lewis onstage laughed: “On the chance I might one day have to speak on an occasion as this, I’ve actually stayed in character as myself for the last 55 years.” He called filmmaker Steven Spielberg “the rudder of the boat” they sailed on. Leading Actress EMMANUELLE RIVA – Amour – she was not at the ceremony. The film also won the award for Best Film Not In the English Language. Director BEN AFFLECK for Argo.
Supporting Actress ANNE HATHAWAY for
her part in Les Misérables Anne Hathaway ascended the stage and took the BAFTA mask from presenter George Clooney – and then turned back around to hug the actor. “What am I thinking? I almost walked past George Clooney without hugging him. That’s just stupid!” She added, “I’m overjoyed and I’m such an airhead right now, but that’s not really new. I’m still collecting myself.” She noted that “the biggest surprise of the entire experience was how much of a sweetie pie Russell Crowe is. He was integral to cast bonding.” Les Mis also won the gong for Production Design for Eve Stewart and Anna Lynch-Robinson, for Sound for Simon Hayes, Andy Nelson, Mark Patterson, Jonathan Allen, Lee Walpole, John Warhurst and for Make Up & Hair for Lisa Westcott. Supporting Actor CHRISTOPH WALTZ for his portrayal of Dr King Schultz, a German-born
bounty hunter in Django Unchained. Original Screenplay DJANGO UNCHAINED – Quentin Tarantino
Adapted Screenplay SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK – David O. Russell who accepted saying, “It’s a wonderful year for film and for writers.”
Animated film BRAVE – Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman. Brave co-director Mark Andrews accepted saying: “To me,

being brave is about being true to yourself and allowing our loved ones the same freedom.”
Outstanding British Film SKYFALL – Sam Mendes, Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, John Logan. Producer Michael G Wilson noted it’s a first for the Bond films. Director Sam Mendes said the prize is “icing on the cake” thanks Daniel Craig “around whom we built this movie” for his bravery, brilliance and “sheer bloody-mindedness”. This
category always looked to be a two-film race between Skyfall and Les Miserables. Changes to the voting system – cutting it down to a tworound system – suggested the pics leading the nominations might end up taking home prizes in the big categories – which are voted on by the entire membership. Skyfall‘s win may well reflect the number of BAFTA-voting Brit practitioners who’ve had a hand in Bond over the years with the franchise celebrating its 50th anniversary. Skyfall also won the Original Music award.
Documentary SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN – Malik Bendjelloul, Simon Chinn Cinematography LIFE OF PI – Claudio Miranda Director Ang Lee accepted the cinematography prize for Claudio Miranda who wasn’t there, then pulled out a piece of paper and said, “Well, the first half of the speech is about how

Louis de Marque Watching Sky News on Monday morning I was frankly appalled by the news that pensioners in Britain are going to have to fork out yet more money for care when they get older. When I was younger there were sufficient “old people’s homes” that were run by the local authority for people to go into when they couldn’t look after themselves to go round. And you didn’t have to pay
I was delighted to hear about the men opposite your office hanging from the sign on the La Trocha Commercial Centre with no safety harness, hard hats or anything else that would have saved them had they have fallen. I used to work on the building sites in London before my wife and I moved here to Spain and the number of absolutely petty rules and regulations that the so-called Health and Safety executive used to put on us was beyond belief.
grave” care that was promised to us all? I reckon that the politicians have been spending our money on all manner of things other than what the money was supposed to be for and can’t keep their promises now. There’s a surprise! They should be focusing on paying those who have paid in and not all the lazy hangers on inhabiting “Great” Britain.

We had to supply and wear all manner of gloves, goggles, overalls, boots, harnesses for this and ropes for that – it cost a fortune in equipment before you could even start a job, but funniest thing of all was that I was made to go on a “ladder course”. Yes, this is exactly what it sounds like so, at the ripe old age of 57 I had to go on a two-week (yes, two weeks!) course to learn how to climb a ladder. My business partner and I were obliged by law to take this course and there was

everybody there from jobbing builders to electricians to the odd plumber or two. To be honest, those of us who had been climbing the things since we were kneehigh-to-a-grasshopper and had lived to tell the tale thought the whole thing a total waste of our time away from working. And the real rub of it all was that the so-called “course” was not free, we had to pay almost £400 to find out what we already knew. So, keep on hanging there guys in Spain!

Chandy Haggett is still around after seeing her paintings displayed last year at Casa Paco’s in Coin. This lady does silk screen printing, something I did when I was at school, and her subject matter is always pleasing to the eye. I look forward to reading in the next issue about the upand-coming exhibition this weekend and, this time, I
hope to go along and be able to buy one of her pieces for my wall. I took a photo of one of her prints last time (hope that’s OK?!) so I am sending it to you for other people to have a look at and I will be off to Villa Padierna this weekend. Thanks for letting me know it was on and I look forward to reading more this Wednesday.

A very near miss!
This Friday 15th February an asteroid will miss Earth by less than 22,000 miles.
B
etween the orbits of Mars and Jupiter there is a gap where a planet should be. Instead there are millions of chunks of rock and ice known as asteroids orbiting about the Sun in an area called the asteroid belt. They are probably the remains of a planet that used to be there but was ripped apart by the massive gravity of Jupiter. steroids vary from small pebble size up to the largest called Ceres that is almost 600 miles in diameter and is now actually classed as a dwarf planet along with Pluto. Ceres was the first asteroid to be discovered in 1801 and since then the discovery of asteroids has multiplied annually. Many of them have been given names including Elvis, or John, Paul George and Ringo but there are so many of them that they are now usually just given a number followed by the year they were discovered. hankfully most of the asteroids remain in a nice steady orbit in the asteroid belt and do no harm to anyone. But there are quite a few rogue asteroids that have been knocked out of their orbits and now follow a very elliptical orbit taking them close into the Sun and then back out into space. And as they move in closer to the Sun then of course they must pass us first. This makes the Earth the equivalent to a blind person trying to cross a motorway! ASA is aware of 848 near Earth asteroids larger than 1km in size with 154 of them classed as potentially hazardous to us. This represents only about 70% of the possible unidentified asteroids that could at some time hit us. n February last year an observatory in Spain discovered a new asteroid christened 2012 DA14 as it passed about one and a half million miles from Earth headed toward the Sun. It swung around the back of the Sun and is now heading back into space only this time it will just miss us at only 21,200 miles, that is closer than the Sky TV satellite! 012 DA14 is 50 metres in size and weighs about 130,000 tons. Its closest approach to us will occur on Friday 15th February at 19.25 GMT. At magnitude 7.4 it won’t be visible to the naked eye but you can see it with binoculars as it passes by. It will be moving quite quickly taking about five

hours to travel from below the northern horizon up towards the handle of the Plough. ecause it is so close to Earth then the Earth’s gravity will slow it down a little and so its orbital period around the Sun will be reduced from 366 days to only 317. This means that the next time it crosses our orbit we won’t be in the same place and so it will miss us by a long shot. Its next closest approach will be on 16th February 2046 when it will be 31,000miles from us. here is absolutely no risk of it hitting us but if it had then scientists have estimated that it would have had the same effect as 2.5 megatons of TNT. An asteroid of similar size hit the Earth in 1908 and wiped out an area 830 square miles, luckily in an uninhabited area of Russia. It knocked down 80 million trees and the shock wave measured five on the Richter scale. It is estimated that an asteroid of this size is expected to strike the Earth once every 1200 years or so. An asteroid measuring only 2-5 metres in size skimmed through the atmosphere in October 2008 and in 2017 another asteroid named 2012 TC4 will pass within 14,000 miles of Earth. o what could we do if an asteroid or comet was on a collision course for Earth? Well if we had spotted it in time and plucky Bruce Willis wasn’t available to land on it there are several options on the drawing board at present. Blowing it up with a nuclear bomb is probably not a good idea as this would just cause multiple fragments to hit us instead of just one. Experts agree that it would be best to land a craft on the asteroid that could then nudge it off course. Failing that it’s a case of putting your head between your knees and kissing….well you know the rest!

Ferrari bring back designer Rory Byrne
Ferrari have brought back Formula 1 design legend Rory Byrne to work on the car they will race in 2014. Byrne, 69, was the chief designer on the cars with which Michael Schumacher won all seven of his world titles, two with Benetton and five with Ferrari. Ferrari said Byrne, who has been working on road car projects as a consultant, would provide "operational support" to the design team. F1 is introducing its biggest set of rule changes in decades for next year.
News from Mijas Bowls Club Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips
We have had wonderful weather for the club’s championships with the triples, pair’s, singles, men’s and ladies’ handicaps. It has been quite an event to organise, some unable to bowl because of illness or holiday. Roberto Wright needs our great thanks for all he has had to put up with and still be sane. Well done Roberto!
The triples final was between Kevin, Janice and Geoff, against Rob, Sue and John. It was a good match to watch as it was quite a close game for the first half, but by the 16th end the score was 16-10. At the last end with a round of applause for both teams, Rob’s team won (pictured below). It had been a long day for both teams with two games to play.
The pairs were quite a good group to watch as there were some wonderful games that ended with very slim margins by one wood on the last end. In the final on a very windy day, it was Kevin and John against Alan and Chris – by the 11th end they were more or less equal but Kevin and John advanced to 23points, Alan and John 17 points by the 18th end. So Kevin and John became the doubles champions.
The ladies’ singles saw some good matches but the final was between Ann Fenton and Pauline Ball (pictured right). This was a lovely game and they were equal at half way. Then Pauline took the lead and Ann could not catch her. Pauline became the new lady champion, well done to
both ladies.
In the men’s singles competition Frank Ball played Don Smith ( pictured bottom). Don led from the start with Frank unable to keep pace with him, well done Don. The handicap singles will be played a little later this month as time was short and it could not be fitted in on time. Photos of the winners can be seen on The News website.

Benavista Bowls Triples Championship 2013
Benavista club drawn pairs and triples competitions were held over the past week with some interesting competitors coming through the ranks.
The semi final of the triples saw two strong teams of Phil Guthridge, John Miles and Reg Batchelor and Richard Burroughs, Reg Goode and Isabella Neilson being narrowly beaten, in two very interesting games, by the finalists Tony Wright, Doug Hamilton and Roger Fabron and Tony Farmer, Richard Welton and Doreen Davey. The final, as sometimes happens, was not such an interesting match. Competitors put so much effort into the semis that they are worn out when it comes to the finals! The
eventual winning triple comprised of Tony, Richard and Doreen, scoring 21 points to 9. It was a very interesting format which brought
bowlers to the fore who had not been as obvious beforehand. By Tony & Fran

Floating, bluffing and fish are terms you will often hear at the poker table.
Bluffing, we know, is someone betting into a pot to represent a hand they do not have in order to the win the pot. Bluffing big is not as common as the TV games would have you think – these are just the action hands in the game, remember these are very good players and know when to bluff or not. It is not just about jamming the pot, you cannot buy a pot if the other player has a made hand. You need to work out what is the raising/calling range of your opponents. Have they hit the board? And, most important, what will they not call, if you bet three quarters of the pot? If your opponent has missed, chances are he will fold so why risk your entire stack going all in? Retain some fold equity! Floaters and “fish” are not the same. A fish in poker is referring to a very bad player who likes to be in every pot regardless of raises, 3 and 4 bets. Normally they play short stacked as they think it reduces their losses but over time they are giving away their bank roll. In general terms if you are floating you are playing a random hand that is weak, best played against a

player you read as passive or weak. The intention is to hit the flop hard, perfect! However this is unlikely, so you float by calling any flop bet and if the board is favourable play the turn and river aggressively with the intention of out playing your opponent and
taking the pot away from him. Remember to float you need to have good reads because if you get it wrong it will cost you, so we can say floating is skilled fish play. One of the best examples is, The Devil Fish by David Ulliott (pictured above).

G4S Olympic losses increase to £70m
Sports Flash
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho says tonight’s Champions League clash with Manchester United is the match "the world is waiting for". Madrid warmed up for the last-16 tie in style, by beating Sevilla 4-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo. The last-16 first-leg tie at the Bernabeu will be the first time Ronaldo has faced his former club since making a record £80m move to Spain in 2009. Ronaldo’s hat-trick on Saturday – his 20th for Real – began with a left-footed strike following a cheeky step-over.
Mark Cavendish wins Tour of Qatar
With four successive stage wins including the final day’s, the Manxman closed out the overall victory. Omega PharmaQuickStep rider Cavendish, 27, overcame a crash after just 15km of the final stage and the whole peloton waited for him to catch up.

"Amazing to have a race full of real gentlemen today, who neutralised a close race so I could rejoin the group after crashing," tweeted Cavendish. Cavendish parted company with Team Sky to join the Belgium-based outfit in October 2012.

Antunes, Malaga's replacement for Monreal who was snapped up by Arsenal, started really well and looked dangerous going forward. Nadal loses in first comeback final at The Chile Open Rafael Nadal was denied the Chile Open title on his comeback from injury as Argentina's Horacio Zeballos came from a set down to beat him in the final. Zeballos, ranked 73rd in the world, won his first ATP Tour title with a shock 67 (2-7) 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 victory at the clay-court event in Vina del Mar.
