Iberia strikers disrupt Madrid airport
Iberia ground workers and flight attendants were involved in clashes with riot police at Madrid-Barajas Airport on Monday, the first day of three five-day strikes over the next few weeks to protest against the firing of more than 3,800 workers. Despite a police blockade, several hundred protesters managed to get into Terminal 4 – Iberia’s main operating hub – creating chaos and adding to the frustration of passengers who were waiting for delayed flights.
Police arrested five Iberia employees, but the protesters did not inflict any significant damage inside or outside the terminal. Four hundred flights were cancelled on Monday, and another 232 on Tuesday. In all, total flights cancelled will

amount to 1,200 by Friday, when the first leg of the strike ends.
In a statement on Monday, Iberia said 70,000 passengers would be affected by the first strike, adding that 60,000 had been found seats on alternative flights. It said 90% of long-haul flights would be operating, but domestic flights would be the worst affected, with more than half of flights grounded. Analysts said 15 days of strikes could cost Iberia up to €100 million.
Monday's demonstration, which lasted little more than an hour, was the latest bout in a dispute between unions and the International Airlines Group, the London-based parent of Iberia, which warned last November that the airline was in a “fight for survival”.
The Group, which also owns British Airways, had originally announced job reductions of 4,500 or more at Iberia, which is losing nearly €2 million a day. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

ICKHAM’S
By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es
Great weekend Last weekend we decided to go away for a wellearned rest so we booked a hotel in Roquetas del Mar, just around 3 hours drive along the coast to Almeria Province from here. We used to go away for weekends quite regularly but the pressure of work has been prohibitive and we hadn’t been there for a couple of years. The hotel, Hesperia Sabinal, is one of the older ones and, to be honest, a bit tired looking but, it’s slap bang on the seafront, in the middle of the resort with great sea views from the rooms and the food’s good so, that’s where we like to go. On the Friday we went out for dinner to a little restaurant that has apparently been there for seven years but we’d never found before. My husband found them on the internet and we booked by email. The name of the place is Le Petit Francais and the service was attentive but not pushy and the food was sublime. Being a French restaurant I had duck followed by a delicious crème brulée. My husband had a nice fat juicy steak (sorry all you veggies but, it was delicious!) with strips of chocolate fondant for pud and a bottle of St. Emillion red wine. As they say: When in France.... The rest of the weekend was spent walking along the “prom” and reading books. I had a big fat book to read called “The Return” written by Victoria Hislop. It was about the Spanish Civil War and I would thoroughly recommend the hotel, the restaurant and the book. All in all, a great weekend was had by all.

Iberia strikers disrupt Madrid airport
Iberia has said it will go ahead and eliminate 3,807 jobs over the next 30 days. The company had offered to limit the reductions to around 3,100 in exchange for salary cuts of 11 to 23 per cent but the unions rejected the offer. The airline also plans to eliminate a number of unprofitable routes in order to cut capacity by 15 per cent.
Iberia, which merged with British Airways in 2011 to create International Airlines Group, reported an
operating loss of €262 million for the first nine months of last year. The airline been hit by increased competition from low-cost carriers and a prolonged recession in its home market.
The next two strikes will take place from March 4th to 8th and March 18th to 22nd. The airline’s pilots are expected to join the strike on March 4th. An Iberia spokesman said the level of flight disruption is expected to be roughly the same for each five-day strike period.

Crowd stops eviction of octogenarian Some 200 people gathered outside the home of 85year-old Aurelia Rey in La Coruña again on Tuesday to make sure an eviction order was not carried out.
On Monday, the crowd had stopped two attempts to get her out and when the local fire brigade was called in to break into her flat via a balcony the firemen refused to do so. People took turns throughout Monday night to make sure no further attempts were made under the cover of darkness. The local council has said she will be rehomed
immediately if the eviction order is carried out.
Aurelia failed to pay one month's rent last year but finally caught up with the arrears and does not owe the flat's owners anything. She said the owners had been trying to get her out of the flat since 1999 because they know they can get a higher rent for it. She currently pays €126 a month out of her

pension of €356.
Her protection is being organised by the Stop Evictions Platform, who used the internet to alert its members to the presence of police vehicles outside her apartment building at 6 am on Monday morning. Within minutes more than 100 people had gathered to stop the eviction order being carried out.
King may need another operation A routine annual medical check-up last week showed that King Juan Carlos's old hernia trouble has returned and his doctors say he will probably have to have another operation to correct it.
However, they are studying the possibility of alternatives to surgery.
If the king has to go under the knife again, it will be the seventh operation he has had since a node was removed from one of his lungs in May 2010.

A woman has to work 82 days more than a man in Spain to receive the same pay for the same work, according to a UGT trade union report prepared for the International Day for Pay Equality to be held on February 22nd.
The UGT's equality secretary, Almudena Fontecha said "lower salaries and fewer rights generate more inequality and lower economic growth". She added: "Investing in equality of opportunities is to invest in greater social wellbeing, something the Partido

She said the salary gap had remained the same for several years – an average of 22 per cent – and was more marked in the private sector, where it was 28 per cent as opposed the 12 per cent in the public sector.
She said the government's labour reforms worsened the situation of the country's workers "which means we will be a more inefficient country from all points of view".

Spain angered by expropriations After Bolivian President Evo Morales on Monday announced the expropriation of the airport management company Servicios de Aeropuertos Bolivianos (Sabsa), accusing the jointly owned unit of Spanish companies Abertis and AENA of failing to invest enough, Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo said Spain would rethink all of its relations with Bolivia. García-Margallo called the nationalisation an “unfriendly act” that “would have its consequences”. He said the government is studying “all measures to be adopted”. In a statement the minister said: “Spain does not question the
sovereign right of a state over its resources and public services, but defends the view that any expropriation should be carried out with the prior payment of a fair price based on a fair and independent valuation of the asset that has been expropriated.” He deplored the lack of warning about the expropriation and the occupation of the company’s headquarters by police. Abertis is a leading manager of infrastructure concessions such as toll roads and airports, and AENA is the state-owned Spanish airport operator.

It expropriated four subsidiaries operated by power utility Iberdrola, two electricity distributors in the regions of La Paz and Oruro, along with a services company and an investment firm. It also took over Red Eléctrica de España’s (REE) Transportadora de Electricidad unit in May of last year. REE operates the Spanish electricity transmission grid. Attempt to involve Police smash ransomware scam King in scandal The National Police have shut down a complex cybercrime network spreading ransomware designed to extort money. Working with the European Union's law enforcement agency, Europol, they arrested 11 people, from Russia, Georgia and Ukraine. Europoal said software planted on targeted machines accused the user of having viewed illegal content, such as images showing child sex abuse. It then told the user to pay a "fine" before continuing to use the machine.
In a statement, Europol said: "By dressing the ransomware up to look as if it comes from a law enforcement agency, cybercriminals convince the victim to pay the 'fine' of €100 through two types of payment gateways – virtual and anonymous – as a penalty for the alleged offence.
"The criminals then go on to steal data and information from the victim's computer. Since the virus was detected in May 2011, there have been more than 1,200 reported cases just in Spain, and the number of victims could be much higher."
Investigators from Europol's European Cybercrime Centre said the network had infected "tens of thousands" of computers worldwide. Estimated profits had been in the range of €1 million per year, the statement said. The gang had been receiving the money in a variety of ways – including using virtual currency such as Bitcoin, Europol said. They were also alleged to have used cash machines in Spain to
withdraw money with compromised credit cards – one of which had been used to steal €26,000 prior to the suspects' arrest.
Europol believe the head of the operation was a 27-year-old Russian man who had been in charge of the "creation, development and distribution of the various versions of the malware”. “He was arrested in the United Arab Emirates and is awaiting extradition to Spain," the statement said.
Bullfighting to get special cultural status MPs voted 180 to 40 last week to consider giving bullfighting special cultural status, backing a petition signed by 590,000 people angered by the banning of the corrida in Catalonia last year. Under the proposal, bullfighting would be promoted by the authorities who would also push the UN to recognise it as part of Spain's cultural heritage. A parliamentary commission
will now fine-tune proposed legislation for a vote that could take place later this year. The parliamentary vote is an attempt by probullfighting conservatives to keep alive a tradition that is being undermined by the economic crisis.
Fewer people can afford the relatively expensive tickets while small towns and villages can no longer afford the bullfights that
are a highlight of their annual fiestas. About 2,000 fights are still held every year.
Bullfighting was banned last year in Catalonia, a ban seen by many Spaniards as an attempt by Catalan nationalists to distinguish the region from the rest of Spain and its traditions. Bullfighting was also banned in the Canary Islands in 1991.
The former partner of Iñaki Urdangarin has handed 197 emails to the Mallorca court investigating the charges against the King's son-inlaw that appear to confirm the influence of Carlos García Revenga, an advisor to the King’s daughters, in the day-today running of the not-for-profit Nóos Institute, through which Urdangarin and Diego Torres received €6 million in public funding that was later channelled to private businesses in their names. Urdangarin was forced to leave his post in 2007 at the King’s request after allegations of financial irregularities first began to emerge, but the emails show that the King continued to retain an interest in his business ventures. Among the messages handed over by Diego Torres are some directly linking the King with Urdangarin´s business dealings.
Urdangarin wrote in December 2007: “Let’s see if we can speak tomorrow because it is important. SM [presumably Su Majestad – His Majesty] has mentioned a possible sponsor and when I go on Sunday I want to leave it with him nicely tied up.”
At that time, Urdangarin was fronting a project called Ayre, which aimed to get a second Spanish sailing team admitted to the 33rd Americas Cup. Last year, when the first wave
of messages considered damaging to the image of the Royal Household emerged, Torres revealed that the king had intervened on Urdangarin’s behalf in the matter. Although the project never came to fruition, the emails abound with the thesis that the Royal Household actively supported it.
In another message, Urdangarin wrote to Corinna zu SaynWittgenstein, a close friend of the King who went on the controversial Botswana elephant hunting trip on which Juan Carlos broke his hip in April last year, to inquire about a job as “president” of Laureus – the international sports awards society of which Sayn-Wittgenstein is strategic director. “Thank you for the wonderful time in London. King of Spain. I hope to hear positive news soon.” Urdangarin’s role was to involve attracting Spanish “sports stars and sponsors” to the organisation. “I have to negotiate your salary,” replied Sayn-Wittgenstein. “I will do what I can to get you as much as possible. Lots of love. Corinna.” A few days later she emailed to confirm that Urdangarin’s base salary would be €200,000 with a variable of another €50,000. “I have copied in your father-in-law,” wrote Sayn-Wittgenstein some time later when forwarding a proposal from Laureus.
Urdangarin's lawyer has cast doubts on the authenticity of the emails while the Royal Household has made it known that it will not make a statement about the matter.

Murder suspect 'haunted by voices'
The man accused of murdering a British grandmother in Tenerife told a court in the island's capital, Santa Cruz, on Monday that he has no memory of having lived on the island. Bulgarian Deyan Deyanov, 29, said he is haunted by voices that "direct how I act", and admitted having taken crack cocaine and LSD before his arrest. Jennifer Mills-Westley, 60, who was a retired council worker from Norwich, was stabbed repeatedly and decapitated in a Los Cristianos shop in May 2011. Mr Deyanov has denied murder. Prosecutor Angel Garcia Rodriguez told the provincial court that Mr Deyanov had approached Ms Mills-Westley before "attacking and striking her repeatedly with a knife in her back and neck until she was completely decapitated". The court was shown CCTV footage of the attack, which took place inside a Chineseowned supermarket on Avenida Juan Carlos I.
The nine members of the jury were also shown two 22cm-long knives thought to have been used in the attack, one of which was bent and covered in blood.
Ms Mills-Westley's two daughters, Sarah and Samantha Mills-Westley, were in court for the first day of Mr Deyanov's trial. Sarah Mills-Westley, 43, told the court her mother, a grandmother of five, had been concerned about safety on the island in the months before her death. She said: "It was nothing specific but she was increasingly concerned that Tenerife was not as safe as when we used to visit 30 years ago. All I want to see is justice done for my Mum." Jennifer Mills-Westley had been living in Tenerife after retiring from her job as a road safety officer
with Norfolk Council.

Mr Deyanov's lawyer, Francisco Beltran, insisted his client had "committed no crime" and claimed he had been a "sick man" living without diagnosis or treatment for acute schizophrenia. Answering questions in Bulgarian via an interpreter, Mr Deyanov said voices had told him he was "an angel of Jesus Christ who is going to create a new Jerusalem. They direct how I act, sometimes they say kill, fight, hit, pray," he added. Mr Deyanov insisted he did not recognise himself in the CCTV footage of the stabbing and likened it to watching "a montage, a film". He admitted he had used crack cocaine and LSD before his arrest, but said he had no memory of

Fewer mobile phone lines
The number of mobile phone lines fell for the first time on record last year, according to figures released last week by the Commission for the Telecommunications Market (CMT), which has been compiling data since 1997. it said the number of mobile lines and USB modems declined 5.4 per cent, or 2.7 million, from a year earlier to 55,742 million, as a result of the drop in consumer spending resulting from the economic crisis. The losses were suffered mainly by the main players in the market: Telefónica’s Movistar, France Telecom’s orange and the UK’s Vodafone. The drop in the number of prepaid clients was accompanied by an increase in the use of smartphones. Spain now has the highest rate of penetration in the use of mobile phones with internet connection in europe. Gijon

He also could not recall being taken to Tenerife from a psychiatric unit in Seville, or having lived in Wales, where he was sectioned in 2010 under the Mental Health Act at Glan Clwyd Hospital.
Mr Garcia Rodriguez is seeking a 20-year jail term, to be served in a secure psychiatric unit. The trial has been adjourned until Wednesday.
A 55-year old assistant chef, who has not been named, has been charged with 14 counts of attempted murder and ordered to prison pending a judicial investigation. Co-workers reported him to police late last year when they became suspicious after repeatedly falling ill. He and his girlfriend, who also worked at the restaurant, were the only staff not to share symptoms. Police examined plates used by workers at the restaurant and detected traces of calcium cyanamide, a strong chemical used to treat chronic alcoholism that provokes nausea, dizziness and palpitations if mixed with alcohol and can have fatal results if taken long-term. They said they suspected he had been driven by "rancour" after reports that there had been frequent arguments in the kitchen.

World News Nestlé removes beef pasta meals Nestlé, the world's biggest food company, has removed two chilled pasta products, Buitoni Beef Ravioli and Beef Tortellini from shelves in Italy and Spain after tests revealed traces of horse DNA. The Swiss-based firm has halted deliveries of products containing meat from a German supplier.
A spokesman for the company said levels of horse DNA were very low but above 1%. Last week the firm said its products did not contain horsemeat. He said Lasagnes à la
Bolognaise Gourmandes – a frozen product for catering businesses produced in France – will also be withdrawn. In addition to removing the three affected products from sale, a spokesman for Nestlé said it would be "enhancing our existing comprehensive quality assurance programme by adding new tests on beef for horse DNA prior to production in Europe". Nestlé is the latest in a string of major food producers to find traces of
horsemeat in beef meals. France meanwhile has partially lifted a production ban for another meat processing firm, Spanghero, saying that unwitting workers should
not be penalised.
Meanwhile the UK and Germany have also both pledged to step up testing of frozen food products.
Pistorius 'shot Reeva Steenkamp Amazon dismisses German security firm in bathroom'
Online retailer Amazon has ended the contract of a security firm employed at one of its German warehouses, after it was accused of harassing seasonal workers in a TV documentary. The German government has called for an investigation in Hensel European Security Services (Hess). Amazon said it had terminated its relationship with the firm because "we have zerotolerance for discrimination and intimidation and expect the same from every company we work with."
The documentary aired last week by state broadcaster ARD showed the conditions of employees at the warehouse in Bad Hersfeld, in the state of Hesse, brought in to help with the Christmas rush.
It claimed employees' rooms were searched, they were frisked at breakfast and constantly watched. Many of the temporary workers came from Spain and Poland, and foreign workers were shown receiving the worst harassment from security guards.
South African athletics star Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend three times as she was in the bathroom at his home, prosecutors told his bail hearing at a Pretoria court on Monday. The prosecution is pursuing a charge of premeditated murder against the 26year-old athlete.
Prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the court that on the night of the killing Mr Pistorius – a double amputee – got up, put on his prostheses, walked seven metres and fired his gun through the bathroom door. He shot four times and hit Ms Steenkamp
three times, he said. The defendant later broke down the bathroom door and carried the victim downstairs, Mr Nel added.
Defence lawyer Barry Roux told the court his client did not know in advance who was behind the door and said the prosecution had provided "no evidence of premeditated murder", and that it was not even murder. Police have rejected the possibility that Pistorius had mistaken Ms Steenkamp for an intruder. His appearance came the same day as Ms Steenkamp's funeral in Port Elizabeth.

A brussels court has rejected a request by convicted child killer Marc Dutroux for early release. Dutroux, 56, was given a life sentence in 2004 for kidnapping and raping six girls, four of whom died, after being arrested in 1996. Dutroux was initially jailed in the 1980s, along with his now ex-wife Michelle Martin for kidnapping and raping five young girls. both were freed early on good behaviour – only to go on to abduct more young victims.
He insisted he was no longer dangerous and wanted to be released into house arrest with an electronic tag. His mother Jeannine Dutroux was among those who called on the courts to reject the request. veNezUelA
Chavez returns home
President Hugo Chavez returned home on Sunday night after receiving treatment for cancer in Cuba. In three messages posted on Twitter, Chavez, 58, thanked venezuelans for their support and said he would continue treatment in his home country. However, he has not been seen in public and rumour has it that Cuban doctors have said they can do nothing more for him. Chavez has been president for 14 years and was reelected for another six-year term in October 2012, but his swearing-in was delayed because of his illness. Mr Chavez went to Havana for surgery on December 11th, his fourth operation in an 18-month period for cancer first diagnosed in mid-2011. AFgHANISTAN
Civilian casualties fall
The number of civilian casualties fell last year for the first time in six years, according to the UN Assistance Mission (Unama), which documented 2,754 civilian deaths, a 12% drop, and 4,805 injuries, a slight rise. The reduction was attributed to less fighting on the ground, and a decline in suicide attacks and air operations. However, the report also noted that women and girls "continued to suffer enormously from the effects of armed conflict", with 301 killed and 563 injured – an increase of 20%. Civilians also faced an increase in threats, intimidation and interference with their rights to education, health, justice and freedom of movement from militants, it added. The report also expressed concern about the re-emergence of armed groups, particularly in Afghanistan's north.

MPs approved new guidance for judges in July last year making clear the right to a family life – set out in Article 8 of the European convention on human rights – was only qualified, but, says the Home Secretary, some

judges got it into their heads that Article 8 is an absolute unqualified right. Condemned BRITISH Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire summoned North Korea’s ambassador to condemn in the strongest terms his country’s recent nuclear test. “This is a clear violation of UN Security Council Resolutions,” said the Minister, “I call on the North Korean regime to act in the best interests of its people and to choose the path they really want. Amid reports of widespread hardship and human rights abuses, the priority must be the health and welfare of North Korean people.”
Government told of horse meat fears
A former manager at the Meat Hygiene Service, now part of Britain’s Food Standards Agency, has told the Sunday Times newspaper that he helped draft a letter warning the government’s Department for Environment, Food
and Rural Affairs (Defra) of fears over contamination of horse meat in April 2011.
In a letter on behalf of Britain’s largest horse meat exporter, High Peak Meat Exports, he warned

Home Secretary says Britain must deport criminals
Britain’s soft judges have received a hefty cuff behind the ear for perversely allowing foreign criminals to remain on Britain’s streets where they may be committing violent crime. Home Secretary Theresa May has suggested that a small minority of judges are making Britain more dangerous by ignoring rules aimed at deporting foreign offenders.

Train woes carry on According to a recent Which? Survey, over half of the 19 train companies operating in the UK that took part in the survey received a “satisfaction level” of 50% or lower. The lowest score of all for customer satisfaction at just 40% was First Capital Connect, followed at 42% by Greater Anglian Trains. Southeastern and First Great Western both scored 43% – the third lowest, then came Northern with 44%, and London Midland with 45% – with a quarter of their passengers saying that their service had become even worse in the last few months with the company suffering staffing problems.
This meant that, overall, 10 companies had a score below 50% customer satisfaction with only nine companies above that figure.
Virgin Trains West Coast main line service came top with the responses from 7,500 of their regular train users, giving them a score of
67%. (This is the company that First Capital wanted to take over recently!) London Overground was second with 65%, while the London to Tilbury and Southend company c2c and Merseyrail both scored 64%.
On London Overground, where new trains have been introduced in recent months, 60% of users said they felt the service had improved in the past two years. However, only 22% of travellers questioned on all the lines taking part thought that services were improving despite the hike in fares in January. 40% of travellers said they were likely to reduce the number of times they travel by train since the increases which saw the average season ticket rise by 4.2%. Which? said: "One First Capital Connect customer told us: 'The price has increased and the trains get more and more crowded. But I never see any

improvements for the extra money I am paying'. And a Southeastern passenger said: 'The prices are terrible, the service is bad and trains are often delayed, cancelled and dirty.'"
Responding to the Which? survey, a spokesman for the Association of Train Operating Companies said: "The independent watchdog Passenger Focus surveys up to eight times as many people a year and last month reported 85% of passengers are satisfied with their service – a record high."
Bob Crow, general secretary of the RMT transport union, said: "It is about time these basket-case private train companies like First Capital Connect were booted off Britain's railways for good and their franchises returned to public ownership. This current tolerance of these private rail spivs by the Government is reward for total and abject failure on an epic scale."
Tax penalty letters go out The Tax Office is sending out nearly one million penalties to taxpayers who failed to file self-assessment returns by the end of January, according to Sky News. By February 20th, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will have completed a mail-out of £100 fixed fines to around 850,000 taxpayers. The letters are being sent to those registered for self-assessment (SA) but who failed to file personal 2011-12 tax year returns online by January 31st. The penalty payments will boost HMRC coffers by around £85m. But the final figure is expected to grow significantly as those who fail to pay the penalty and file returns by the three-month cut-off incur additional daily fines. Around 60,000 late tax returns have already been lodged between February 1st and 15th – but those taxpayers are still liable to pay the £100 penalty. An HMRC spokesman said: "Anyone who hasn't yet sent their 2011-12 tax return to HMRC will have already incurred a £100 late-filing penalty. Non-filers have to file online now to avoid further penalties or contact us to ask to be
taken out of self-assessment, and provided they meet the criteria, we will take them out of SA and cull any penalties incurred." The Tax Office expects to have finished processing all 850,000 penalty letters by February 20th. Most of those hit by the late filing penalty are expected to receive their letters within seven days. HMRC has so far received approximately 9.76 million returns, both paper and online, for the 2011-12 tax year. In the previous tax year, 80.9% of the 10.5 million SA
taxpayers filed on time for the January cut-off. Taxpayers who fail to file returns after three months are hit with a daily £10 fine up to a maximum of £900, along with the initial £100 fine. Those who allow the filing delay to extend beyond six months are also hit with another £300 fine or 5% of the tax due, whichever is higher. HMRC is then entitled to hit those who fail to file within 12 months to a tax demand up to 100% of the tax due instead.

Why so many tremors in Jaen?
Since October 20th last year, more than 1,800 seismic movements have been registered in the towns of Torreperogil and Sabiote in Jaen province and their inhabitants want to know why. They are so concerned that many now sleep in their cars rather than run the risk of being buried alive by an earthquake. None of the tremors have registered higher than 3.6 on the Richter scale, but people fear they may simply be the forerunners of "the big one".
The scientists are also baffled and the local councils are impotent to calm the residents' nerves. Torreperogil mayor Josefa Caballero said: "We're doing all we can, asking for full information and adopting preventive measures. Both towns carry out earthquake drills in their schools. Local doctors are reporting more visits than ever from people suffering anxiety attacks, nausea, sleep problems and lack of appetite.
The Andalucia Health Service recently sent a team of psychologists to help residents cope with the stress and anxiety caused by the tremors. Now, as a result of pressure from the town councils, the National Seismic Network has sent in a team of experts to try to get to the bottom of the matter. One has put forward the hypothesis that they tremors could be caused by
Work starts on Banderas demolition
Work to move back the wall of Antonio Banderas's house on Marbella's Los Monteros beach started on Monday. The house was built in 1995 with an illegal licence obtained during the Jesus Gil years. The actor agreed to move the wall back to get the house legalised.
A public footpath will take the place of the wall. The first step is to erect a fence behind the wall to screen prying eyes into Banderas's garden. When the old wall is completely demolished, a higher wall will be built along the new boundary.

No money for police bullets
the local council is so short of money that it has not been able to buy bullets for the local police force's target practices for the past two years. target practice once a year is obligatory but the 14 policemen making up the town's force have preferred to use the bullets for their hand guns. a year's supply of bullets costs €2,000, a council spokesman said, "something we just cannot afford". the situation is so bad that there is no money for a tow truck to take away badly parked cars and the breathalysing kit has been out of service for weeks because the council can't pay €120 for its weekly maintenance. northern malaga

didn't watch Spain's equivalent to the Oscars - the Goya awards - on Sunday, knowing full well it would be nothing more than film industry luminaries spouting off about politics after they grabbed their awards. It's the same every year. I doubt if any other sector of the population talks more nonsense than these "progres" (progressives), who have less reason than anyone for doing so.
T
he Spanish film industry gets financial help to the tune of €146 million a year from the Ministry of Culture, the state television TVE and regional governments, plus a credit line of €25 million from the Official Credit Institute (ICO). It needs the money because Spanish cinemagoers prefer the slick films made in Hollywood or the arty ones made in several European countries to the largely boring ones made in Spain.
I
gave up watching them years ago. You either have a couple who say little, look at each other a lot and fornicate at the bat of an eyelid while they work to save their relationship. I suspect it's a reaction to the sexual repression of the Franco years but they should have recovered from it by now. The other favourite topic is the Civil War, with the Republicans portrayed as angels and Franco and his mob as devils. I haven't watched any of this genre either because I know that the Republicans were far from angelic and it gets up my nose to watch ignorant actors and directors rewriting history.
O
ne of them actually said 1492 should be dropped from the history curriculum in Spanish schools because it was unimportant. Tell that to Christopher Colombus who discovered the Americas and to all the people living there, whose history started that year. Tell it to the Catholic Monarchs who made Spain the first united country in Europe. (The "United Kingdom" happened centuries later). Tell that to the Moors and the Jews who were expelled from Spain, the Jews to continue their wanderings and the Moors to retreat to the deserts, where they've moldered away ever since.
T
his year, the stars concentrated on denouncing the governments cuts. One actress, Candela Peña, said it had been a bad year for her. She had watched her father die in the San Lorenzo de Viladecans Hospital "where he had no blankets to cover him and we had to take water in for him". Hospital director Jordi
Monedero showed her up for the liar she is the very next morning. He said the hospital was experiencing difficulties because of the cuts but not to the extent of not being able to provide blankets for the patients or not to be able to supply them with water. He said he had not received any complaints from the actress's family while her father was there.
B
est Actress winner Maribel Verdú focused on the evictions, and dedicated her statue to "all those people in this country who have lost their homes". What she failed to mention was that she had worked in the real estate business, encouraging those innocents who are currently losing their homes to take out mortgages they would not be able to pay back. She didn't mention the health sector cuts at all, probably because she possesses shares in the private Clinica Premium in Estepona. She also has four homes - one in Carabanchel in Madrid, two more in the more upscale CastellanaSalamanca district and another in Marbella. I'm not saying she has no right to possess four homes, just that it's a bit hypocritical of her to espouse the cause of the evictees, given her real estate background. Like all the other bleeding hearts at the ceremony, she was wearing a Dior dress worth €8,480. I hope she auctions it and gives the money to the needy.

L
astweek, a reader wrote to El País criticising the arrogance of Education Minister Jose Ignacio Wert and his comments about the flagrant corruption allegations that have been besieging the Partido Popular (PP). Wert told reporters that he travels extensively and in every country he visits there are politicians who have come under fire for graft accusations. There is nothing special about what is occurring in Spain, he said. The reader explained that because of his own financial situation he is unable to make any trips so he has to rely on visiting other place through the virtual world of the Internet. Yet he has discovered that in some nations, such as Germany and Britain, the mere suggestion that a government minister had plagiarized a paper or thesis was grounds enough to drum up public pressure to force them to stand down. Yet, of course, with the allegations surrounding Health Minister Ana Mato, which point to her benefiting from payoffs by group of corrupt businessmen who formed the Gurtel network, the PP government continues to back her. Her name surfaced in the investigation centred on her estranged husband, Jesus Sepulveda, who was the mayor of the Madrid satellite town Pozuelo. A judge has cleared Matos’ name a few years back but the suspicions keep growing.
he Film Academy is also a bit miffed with emcee Eva Hache, who made lots of snide remarks about the Royal family, the government, Mariano Rajoy et al. A spokesman said Hache could not be allowed to act as if her attitudes were those of the Academy, especially as she should have been promoting the national film industry, which she didn't mention at all.
T
he film industry backed Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to the hilt during his 2004 election campaign in the hope of getting lots of succulent subsidies out of him. They accompanied him on the anti-Iraq war marches and in return he became the first prime minister to attend a Goya awards secretary after he was elected. And he didn't do much more for them than that. I should imagine that out of sheer spite they all voted for the United Left in the last general election.

hey'll never learn and no doubt we'll have to put up with their puerile political shenanigans for years to come.
secret payoffs ever took place. And Bárcenas summed up the entire arrogance of this conservative party by flipping off reporters in front of the television cameras on Sunday as he arrived from a trip to Vancouver where he reportedly went skiing. This is a man who is still living high on the hog despite the numerous investigations built against him, including for tax evasion. Until now, no judge has decided that it is imperative to confiscate his passport or order him to stay in the country. Bárcenas is making a mockery of justice by showing the world he still can travel to different parts of the world, enjoying life, but at the same time teasing prosecutors and others that he can pick up and run off when he wants to.
T
he PP is also hoping to clean up its images through the proposed Transparency Law that will be debated in Parliament over the next few weeks. Besides making it mandatory for all public institutions and top government officials to release their financial statements and details of their personal wealth, the PP has been edging closer to include all the political parties within that legislative framework. This is a key issue that was brought up by the Berlin-based Transparency International. The opposition wants greater transparency measures, including inventories of what politicians owned before and after they came to office. But there are already some grumblings by elected officials that such lists are invasions of privacy.
A T
he PP has a severe image problem that will no doubt take years, if not decades, to repair. The barrage of lawsuits party officials have planned against El Pais for publishing papers drafted by former treasurer Luis Bárcenas that show top members getting fat bonuses along with their regular salaries, and against Bárcenas himself, are flawed attempts to demonstrate to the citizens that no
ll of these lawsuits and reforms will not convince people that the PP has it in its heart to clean up any of the suspicions hanging over its head. The partyhas to come up with stronger internal disciplinary measures and will take drastic actions against people like Bárcenas and others who accused of graft and other crimes. They must be separated from the party immediately, and not be given any type of advisor’s positions or side work that could over serve to come back and bite the PP as it did when it was discovered that Sepúlveda and Bárcenas were still on the PP payrolls. There is a dangerous tug-ofwar match being carried out by two teams: one made up of discredited politicians and another by the victims of the ongoing social crisis. And it is only a matter of time before the rope snaps.

Tenancy and Rental contracts
Over the past few months, we have been receiving three or four enquiries on tenancy and rental contracts every week, probably due to the crisis and financial problems people are currently suffering. There are too many tenants not paying their monthly rents and too many landlords desperate with these situations.
Unfortunately, more often than not people come to us with no signed rental contract or with tenancy contracts not properly drafted.
This is one of the most delicate parts of the Spanish law, and, therefore, before signing a rental or tenancy document the right guidance and advice is vital. Whether you are a landlord or a tenant, not requesting professional legal advice when you are going to sign a written rental contract, or an agreement concerning residential or commercial property, can cause serious problems in the future. For example, a tenant could legally stay in a rental property for up to five years.
Oral agreements are legally valid in Spain but we strongly recommend you have a written lease that includes appropriate clauses to protect your interests. Although the Spanish law governs the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords, the law allows them to establish special clauses and terms in these rental contracts, so it is advisable to seek professional guidance and draft the contract in such a way that it reflects perfectly your personal requirements. There are also many points that must be clearly detailed. A part of the contract specifies the name of the landlord and the tenant, the location of the property, the duration of the lease and the due date and amount of rental payment. The agreement can also include any other legal provisions to which both parties agree, such as:
1. Warranty of habitability. A landlord must provide a safe and sanitary place for tenants. A landlord can be required to provide fire extinguishers and other such fixtures as ovens, refrigerators, sinks, etc. 2. How communications and notifications of agreements, problems or understandings between landlord and tenant will be resolved.
3. What happens when repairs legally required are not made by landlord or tenant?
4. When, and by how much can the landlord increase the rent? 5. Who has responsibility for maintenance?
the the
6. Guidelines for any repairs to the house. 7. Is it possible to sub-let the property?
8. Penalties for breaking the lease by the tenant or the landlord. 9. The possibility that landlords or tenants have of passing their rights and obligations on to another person.
10. Who pays; community fees, IBI local property taxes, and home insurance?
It is always better to prevent misunderstandings before signing, please let your solicitor read the lease carefully and suggest deleting or changing any clauses that, in his professional opinion, could severely limit your rights, or could prejudice you in some way in the future. Solicitors know the Spanish law and can also draw up a new lease proposal that suits your needs.
The solicitor will also request and organise that the other party signs the
contract. Let your solicitor use his knowledge to protect your interests.
As an indication, our legal fees for preparing, revising and negotiating normal residential rental contracts are normally around 300 euros so it is well worth seeking legal advice to get a first-rate rental contract which will protect your legal rights and prevent possible unnecessary expense in the future. Should you already have a rental problem because your tenant does not pay the rent, or
because your landlord wants you leave the property, it is also sensible to take legal advice as soon as possible.
From our experience the sooner you take legal action the better, as the longer a problem is left; the more difficult it is to sort out.

Fire in Arroyo destroys clothing This picture was taken last Wednesday by a reporter from The News at the Jupiter Apartment block in Arroyo.
Combat tips from computer legend
No-one knows what caused the blaze yet but a well-dressed man in his late 60s/early 70s lost all his clothing that had been piled in the porch overhang to the block. It was not known why his clothing was in that area but the fire services and police who had been called by one of the residents put the blaze
out. However, this was not before all the poor gentleman’s clothing had
been destroyed.

Kieran Taylor, the young Arroyo-based taekwondo black belt, had the fantastic opportunity to train with a genuine computer games legend at a weekend seminar at The Benalmadena Taekwondo Club, with the Japanese Master Hwang Suil, 6th Dan. This is the man that was the star of that Playstation fighting game Tekken that so far has sold 45 million copies worldwide. Master Suil also has 11 Taekwondo schools throughout Japan but took time out to fly in from Tokyo for this training session.
Kieran will be taking these new found combat skills to Galicia next month, when he makes the long trip to defend his title and bring the gold medal back to Arroyo.

Poem goes Women’s World Day to auction Of Prayer in Malaga A copy of the last and most famous stanza of For the Fallen which begins, “They shall grow not old...”, handwritten by its author, Lawrence Binyon, will feature in Part I of The Roy David’s Collection Part III: Poetry: Poetical Manuscripts and Portraits of Poets at Bonham’s, New Bond Street, London on Wednesday April 10th offered at auction and is estimated to fetch in the region of £5,000 – £8,000. The final verse of For the Fallen is commonly known as the Act or Ode of Remembrance. For many it is the emotional climax of Remembrance Sunday services not only in this country but throughout the Commonwealth and the words are often engraved on cenotaphs, war memorials and on headstones here and in the war cemeteries of northern France. The copy for sale was written some time before 1918 on British Expeditionary Force (BEF) headed note-paper. This is especially appropriate because when Binyon originally wrote the poem, in 1914, it was to honour the dead of the BEF on the Western Front where he later served as a volunteer medical orderly alongside BEF troops during 1915 and 1916, being too old for active service.
When For the Fallen was published in The Times in September 1914, casualties had started to mount and the promise of a speedy end to the war was already fading. The poem, and its final verse in particular, became and remains today a dignified and elegiac expression of national grief. The full text of the final verse reads as follows: ‘They shall grow not

old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not wither them, nor the years condemn; At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them.’
Poetical Manuscripts and Portraits of Poets, is the fruit of 40 years of collecting by the poet and scholar Roy Davids and is the finest collection of poetry ever to come to auction. In Mr David’s own words; “It would now be impossible for the present collection to be even approximately replicated.”

In 2011, 51,900 people applied for asylum in France. The presence of these people in the country both enriches the culture and can cause social difficulties. Behind each request, each statistic, is the story of a life. Some of those stories will be shared in the service. We envisage a great annual wave of prayer, rising with the sun over the island of Samoa and then sweeping across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, until it comes to rest in American Samoa some 36 hours later. Visitors and Travel Insurance Holiday of a Lifetime or Holiday from Hell? The British Consulate in Madrid has issued a press release urging anyone expecting friends and family from the UK to encourage their visitors to take out travel insurance before leaving for parts foreign. The article aimed at people age 55 and older entitled, “ Over-55s risk huge medical bills by failing to take out comprehensive holiday insurance” quotes facts, figures and situations that give some indication of just how bad an uninsured situation can become for those who don't bother with insurance or consider it not necessary as they are “staying with friends” or “only there for a few days”.
British Consulate, “Every year around 5000 British nationals, including over-55s who have failed to take out insurance cover or have invalidated their policies, find themselves seeking assistance from consular staff in Spain. Some end up with life-changing bills of many thousands of pounds for expensive
medical treatment or specialist repatriation to the UK”.
Dave Thomas, Consular Regional Director for Spain: “If you have over55s visiting you this year, tell them to get insurance before they travel. Taking out a comprehensive policy and declaring any medical condition may be an added expense but it’s a small investment compared to what you could end up paying if something goes wrong.” Helpful as they are, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office make it clear they cannot assist with any of the following; enter a country without a valid passport or necessary visas, give legal advice, get better treatment in hospital or prison than is given to local people, pay bills, give you money, or make travel arrangements.
Without doubt any EU citizen British, Spanish or other, travelling within the EU should at least be in possession of a valid
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC available through the social security office is free and will afford travellers and holidaymakers emergency medical treatment, if required as would be given to any insured national of the EU country they are visiting. The EHIC does not provide for ongoing medical treatment, private treatment, air ambulance, repatriation, translation services, or hotel accommodation for attending friends or relatives. These costs should be covered by most good comprehensive Travel Insurance. Although the report is aimed at the vast number of 55 years plus higher risk visitors from the UK, the information should be considered for any visitors to Spain and the EU. More travel advice is available on line http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/t ravel-and-living-abroad

The Burning of the Fallas fiesta Valencia A trip to the spectacular Burning Of The Fallas (Festival of the Fires) in Valencia has been planned.
In the middle of the Mediterranean coast, Valencia city, celebrates each year the final days of the winter and the arrival of spring with spectacular fires and pyrotechnics. From March 15th to 19th (the feast of Saint Joseph, Father’s Day in Spain), Valencia is given over to a carnival of bonfires, fiesta, fireworks and a healthy dose of satire known as Las Fallas, the fires. Displayed on every corner all over the city are colourful ninots, giant
papier-mâché figures often 20 feet tall or even more that have been paraded through the streets and then placed in fantasy groups to tower over excited spectators. Each one in some way satirises a political figure, or a soap star, or more exotic creatures from the movies, TV, sports idols, or simply imagination. Some of them are grotesque – others playful and charming – all are larger than life and up for public scrutiny. Every day at 2pm firecrackers rip through the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in a noisy event called la Mascletá. This concert of gunpowder is very popular and involves different neighbourhood groups competing for the most impressive volley, ending with the terremoto, (literally meaning "earthquake") as hundreds
of masclets explode simultaneously. While this may not be for the frail or faint-fainthearted, you can understand how the Valencians got their valiant name! Another important event is the Ofrenda de Flores a la Virgen de los Desamparados, a beautiful ceremony every March 17th and 18th, that honours Valencia’s patron Virgin. Thousands of Falleras and Falleros arrive in the city from every corner of the Comunitat (Valencia State) and take to the streets wearing traditional costumes and dancing to their neighbourhood or village bands as they wend their way to the Plaza de la Virgen to offer bouquets to the giant image of the Virgin. Historians say that the origins of the festival go back to the time when

carpenters cleared out their workshops and talleres at the end of winter, throwing out odds and ends of wood and old candles and lighting them on the street the day of Saint Joseph. Nowadays, celebrations draw to an end with a fabulous firework display in the Paseo de la Alameda, called the Nit del Foc (literally "The Night of Fire"), on March 18th. Fallas burn all over the city the following night (including the winner of the competition) in a tremendous spectacle of fire and joy. Valencia is at that moment like Nero´s

A Go o d d Ay To d i e HAr d Directed by John Moore Starring: Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Sebastian Koch
Hard guy Bruce Willis is at it again. He returns as John McLane in the fifth episode of the Die Hard franchise – 25 years after the first movie took cinema audiences by storm and six years after the last one, Live Free or Die Hard. He is still staring through squinty eyes and ends up wearing a sweaty vest but this time he has gone to Moscow in search of his estranged son Jack (Courtney).
The plot is pretty but incomprehensible basically involves Willis throwing himself into the mandatory destructive car chases and thrilling shoot-
outs in which it transpires, luckily, that the bad guys still can’t shoot straight.
The action gets even hotter after his boy escapes from the dock with a political prisoner (Koch) and all hell lets loose. Don’t expect any deep meaningful father and son debates – there’s a brief moment of dad’n’son chat inbetween jumping off buildings and dodging bullets and generally laying waste to Russia, but it won’t hold up the action a jot. The action moves to Chernobyl and a ludicrous plan to deal with nuclear

radiation. Whatever. The critics have soundly rubbished this latest Willis outing. But he still has a charismatic presence and while Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand and Stallone’s Bullet to the Head both did miserable business Willis’s movie was No 1 at the US box office when it opened.
So, don’t go thinking there might be a plot of much description. But if you are looking for pure popcorn enjoyment in which the 57-year-old Willis hugely enjoys smashing every vehicle he comes across and setting
Chris Robinson Brotherhood Big Moon vs The Magic Door
Last year the Chris Robinson Brotherhood released two albums, “Big Moon Ritual” (June 2012) and “The Magic Door” (September 2012), and although both were recorded at the same, they are very different.
The best way to describe “Big Moon Ritual” is, it’s like the 70's era – Grateful Dead, Allman's and even a dash of Marshall Tucker Band thrown into the melting
pot of Robinson's southern funk and West Coast Mary Jane inspired rock and roll.
That said, I personally prefer “The Magic Door”, because it is more blues, that good old fashioned blues, which you just don’t get anymore, with a hint of Dylan in the mix.
Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes) formed the Brotherhood in 2011, the group is comprised of

On November 4th, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst the chaos, six of Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA
"exfiltration" specialist named Tony Mendez (Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.

Your mind is razor sharp right now but perhaps it is also time to lighten up and give yourself a break, the problem is you can see clearly what needs to be done and what has to happen and this is a time where patience is needed. Your longterm success is linked to other people and right now it is all about focusing on the moment and not getting too far ahead of yourself. The simple things will make your life full this week. The steps that you are now taking will help to bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be. A part of this process is learning to say ‘no’ when someone else is capable of doing something themselves. The focus is all about bringing harmony and balance back into your life and making sure that your mind is in alignment with your actions and not in another place. This can be a challenging week for you but it is there to set you up for a much happier future. Someone could be working in the background to oppose what you do, however they will be lovely to your face. In time they will expose their true nature. For now it is the effort you make regarding matters of the heart that mean the most. There is a true breakthrough in a key relationship and it is backed with committed effort giving you the security you crave. The effort you make all comes down to what something is worth to you and right now you feel crystal clear about what you desire and are confident enough to go out and get it. You can have it all if you put your mind into achieving what it is you really want. When you are strong and centred in your heart, others will flock around you. This is an excellent time for spending with family and children, playing games and having some fun. Taking a risk in a certain conversation will take you far further than you can imagine this week. Say what you need to say and keep talking until the knots are all untied within you. Once everything is safely out and on the table you will know how to proceed. Any negotiations that need to be administered to make something happen are featured as you can firmly hold your ground and yet you are sensitive enough to the needs of others.

It is often the little things that mean the world and you appreciate small gestures of kindness right now. Just when you probably want to kick back and take it easy, something requires serious work and precision in your personal actions. Basically the work that you do now, will allow you to play and prosper later on. You are September 23rd - planting the seeds that can sustain you for years to come. The hardest thing is getting started, but once you do, one thing quickly leads to another. October 22nd
SCORPIO October 23rd November 21st
What you need more than anything in this world is to trust. You need proof that you can trust and yet the future is uncertain. All we really have is the past to pull from and if the past has let you down it can be a challenge to feel fully certain about anything, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. The proof you need is on the way allowing you to feel secure again, communication is vital, for when you open up, things will quickly clear up.

this happens the imagination can run wild and nothing makes much sense. The good news is by the weekend you will be feeling a trust in yourself that allows your inner space to settle and fear leaves you. Issues are brought back to home and your feet are on the ground. Others may not like what you say but they do respect you for saying it. The mind is a powerful thing and we make the world with our thoughts, you are becoming intimately in touch with this power and now have the opportunity to make a life altering shift as a result. A great working partnership could be about to form too, this can be a renewed intensity within an existing relationship that brings growth and personal gains. What may be impossible for one person becomes so easy when you join forces with another.
There is a need this week to be more aware of the hidden motivations or connections that others may have that you are not aware of. Do not take things too casually or forget to check the important questions that you should be asking. Something could be going on behind the scenes. As long as you keep your feet on the ground and take precautions all will run smoothly. You are close to some turning point in your life, perhaps an opportunity you have been waiting for. There are always those defining moments in our lives where our paths suddenly can change and lead us in a brand new direction. Changes and transformations are needed even if you don’t want them. The problem we have as human beings is that we see things from a very limited perspective but you are being encouraged to trust that whatever you step into with both feet, will turn out swimmingly well. The goal is to feel alive inside.
Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!
This week’s recipe comes from Kate Buchan who is the Sous Chef at Kimbridge Restaurant, near Romsey in Hampshire
Filo-wrapped Pears with Orange Sauce Ingredients:
( Serves 4)
• 4 medium pears • Marzipan • Filo pastry, 8 sheets • A little butter, melted • 40 grams of cornflour • 50 grams orange liquor - optional Stock syrup • 500 grams of caster sugar • 500 ml of water • 1 cinnamon stick
• 1 vanilla pod Orange sauce • ¼ litre of orange juice • ¼ litre of stock syrup (the liquid the pears are poached in) • 1 orange
Preheat the oven to 180˚C (160˚C fan) /350 ˚F/ Gas Mark 4. Carefully peel the pears leaving the stalk on. Using a small knife, carefully remove the core of the pear leaving behind an upside-down cone shape in the bottom. To make the stock syrup, use a large saucepan to boil the water, sugar, with the vanilla pod and cinnamon together. Once the sugar is dissolved and the liquid is clear, reduce the heat. Now carefully place the pears into the saucepan and simmer for about 10-12 minutes. Again exercising care, remove the pears from the saucepan and place on a cooling rack over a plate in order to cool and drain. Once the pears are cool, take a small amount of the marzipan and stuff in the bottom of each pear to fill the gap. Cut the 8 sheets of filo into 16 squares measuring 13cm/5 inches across. Brush one
square with melted butter and place the pear in the middle of the square then wrap each corner of the filo around the pear until the pastry is wrapped tightly around the pear. Repeat this until you have wrapped 4 squares of pastry around each pear, then place on a paper-lined baking sheet. Place in the oven and bake for 10 minutes until golden brown. To make the orange sauce, boil the orange juice and the stock syrup together and add the liquor if using. Mix the cornflour with a little water to make a paste the pour into the sauce and re-boil. Take the whole orange and using a peeler, peel the off the skin. Then finely slice the skin into strips and add to the sauce. Place each pear onto a plate and drizzle some of the warm sauce around and enjoy!

August 23rd September 22nd
This is an excellent week for love and romance where your ability for dreaming, using your imagination and being creative is off the scale. Powerful emotions are rumbling within and there is probably a growing sense inside that tells you that you need to get everything arranged and in place for dealing with making sure you have a stable future. Watch out for distracting temptations near the weekend that could steer you off track.

People often confuse when to use muy and when to use mucho. Muy usually means very and mucho usually means a lot. So, we can say estoy muy cansado - I am very tired. La niña es muy bonita - The girl is very pretty El coche es muy rápido - The car is very fast And then, Tengo mucho dinero - I have a lot of money Él siempre habla mucho - he always talks a lot or Trabajo mucho - I work a lot For those who like grammatical explanations, the rule is muy for adjectives and adverbs and mucho for verbs and nouns. However, if you want to make something very, very whatever it is there is a simple way to do this. You add ísimo when talking about masculine things and ísima when talking about feminine things. Rápido is fast so El coche es rápidísimo - The car is very, very fast. Largo is long so El camino es largísimo - The track is very, very long Suave means soft. If you want to say the rug is very, very soft - La alfombra es suavísima. Díficil means difficult so el trabajo es dificilísimo means the work is very, very difficult. And if you want to say thank you very, very much you say Muchísimas gracias. Ya está - That's it Hasta la próxima - Until next time Valerie

New SARS-like strain breeds faster
The new strain of coronavirus breeds in the human body faster than SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and can evade the immune system as easily as the common cold. The new findings, which were published in the journal mBio, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology, also found similarities between the new coronavirus and the common cold. The researchers said they did not know whether the cases they had observed were the tip of the iceberg or whether many more people are infected without showing severe symptoms. They said the relatively few cases reported in the three months since the virus was discovered suggest it is not particularly contagious. Meanwhile,
a
third
member of a family in the UK has been infected with the new respiratory illness similar to the deadly SARSs virus, which health officials said strengthens evidence that the virus can spread between people.
This case appears to be a milder form of the infection and the patient is not being treated in hospital. The infection is thought to come from contact with animals. However, if the virus can spread between people it poses a much more serious threat.
The second was linked to travel to the Middle East and Pakistan. The virus is then thought to have spread from the second patient to his son and another member of the family. Other people who came into contact with the family are being tested.
The exact source of the new virus and how it spreads is still unknown.
This is the fourth case identified in the UK. The first was a patient flown in from Qatar for treatment.
The leading theory is that it comes from animals and the new SARS-like virus also appears to be closely related to a virus in bats. However, if the infection needs to jump from an animal to a person with each infection, the threat would be much lower. The World Health Organization reported cases from within the
same family in Saudi Arabia in November 2012.
It was impossible to tell whether each patient caught the infection separately – or if it had spread between them. Earlier this week Prof John Oxford, a virology expert at Queen Mary, University of London, said: "In a family things can spread far more easily
than they would spread outside, people share towels and toothbrushes etc. "If it was somebody who was not related or a nurse or a doctor – that would be a lot more serious."

The Shakespearian actor who became famous playing the husband of Felicity Kendal
Richard Briars dies aged 79, at home with his family
… but he had a jolly “Good Life” and said he thoroughly enjoyed “the ciggies”. As well as starring opposite Felicity Kendall in the classic BBC sitcom The Good Life, Briers appeared in countless TV shows including Ever Decreasing Circles and Monarch Of The Glen. He was also a respected stage actor with a wide range of Shakespearean credits to his name. Briers recently revealed that he had been battling the lung disease emphysema for a number of years. In an interview he blamed years of smoking for the condition: "It's totally my fault. So, I get very breathless, which is a pain in the backside. Trying to get upstairs... oh God, it's ridiculous. Of course, when you're bloody nearly 80 it's
depressing, because you've had it anyway. I was diagnosed five years ago and didn't think it would go quite as badly as it has. It's a bugger, but there it is. I used to love smoking." Briers' career ranged from television, to theatre, to film and radio with the actor, trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, making his West End debut in the late 1950s. In The Good Life, he played alongside actress Felicity Kendal as a married couple who decide to drop out of the rat race and try out a life of self-sufficiency. His film credits included A Chorus Of Disapproval in 1989 and Watership Down in 1978 in which he was the voice of
Fiver. He also narrated the children's cartoon series Roobarb and Custard. But he won wide acclaim for his Shakespearean work after joining Kenneth Branagh's Renaissance Theatre Company. He appeared in a list of Branagh's films including Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet. He said of one run in the title role of Hamlet: "I may not have been the best Hamlet of my generation but I was certainly the fastest. On the opening night I took 24 minutes off the running time, and I think it must have been the only Hamlet in recent times where people were able to get out to the pub afterwards for a drink," he said.
His latest film credit is in the recently released "Cockneys vs. Zombies." Briers, who was married with two daughters, was awarded an OBE in 1989 for services to the arts. Branagh paid tribute to Briers, telling reporters: "He was a national treasure, a great actor and a wonderful man. He was greatly loved and he will be deeply missed." Actor Stephen Fry on Twitter described him as "the most adorable and funny man imaginable". The actor, who died peacefully at his London home on Sunday, is survived by his wife Ann Davies and their daughters Lucy and Katie.
Local man escapes Grant number 2 Spain goes digital avalanche When Meinrad (Maini) Spenger, the CEO and cofounder of Spanish mobile phone operator Másmovil, recently decided to take a well-deserved break from work, he could have never imagined he was to be saved from a mountain slope, by using a phone from his very own company, Másmovil!
Maini and two of his friends were skiing along one of the tracks in St. Moritz, in the Swiss Alps, when a huge avalanche struck, burying everything in its path, including the three friends.
Dragged 800 metres down the slope, they suffered sustainable injuries and two of the friends ended up being completely buried by snow. Maini on the other hand was trapped, but not completely buried, and
eventually managed to free his left arm to reach for his Másmovil phone, which, despite being in the Alps, had good enough coverage to phone the rescue services, who arrived by helicopter some 15 minutes later.
The friends were flown to the nearest hospital where they were treated for hypothermia and numerous injuries. Maini is currently recovering back home in Spain, where he tells everyone who wants to hear, never to set foot out of the door without having a reliable mobile phone operator! If you would like to know more about Másmovil, or to find out where to locate your nearest distributor, go to www.masmovil.es or phone toll-free number 1473.
Love Actually star Hugh Grant announced the arrival of a second child, a boy, with his girlfriend as he tweeted to his 77,000 followers: "In answer to some journos. Am thrilled my daughter now has a brother. Adore them both to an uncool degree. They have a fab mum." He later added: "And to be crystal clear. I am the Daddy." The child who was born in St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London on December 29th but only registered on Valentine’s Day has been named Felix Chang Hong Grant. The 52-year-old star of Love Actually and About A Boy is on the certificate as the child’s father under his full name Hugh John Mungo Grant with his occupation listed as ‘actor’. Tabitha, his daughter with Chinese actress Tinglan Hong, was born in September 2011. After Tabitha's birth, Hong was granted a High Court injunction prohibiting

harassment of her and the child. Grant, 52, has been outspoken on phone hacking and the impact of the paparazzi on celebrities' lives. He condemned photographers for hounding Hong and his daughter. He joined Twitter as HackedOffHugh in November to promote press reform in the wake of the hacking scandal, saying "it was a chance in a lifetime". Grant was awarded a "substantial" sum in damages by now defunct paper News Of The World after settling a phone hacking claim. The undisclosed amount was donated to Hacked Off, which lobbies for "a free and accountable press". Grant is on the campaign group's board. Grant dated Elizabeth Hurley for 13 years before they split in 2000, five years after he was caught cheating with Hollywood prostitute Divine Brown.
Many Hollywood distributors are now releasing films digitally after a theatrical run. Spain is one of the countries now able to connect on Google Play for movies. At Risk Entertainment / Echo Bridge Home Entertainment recently released the horror film "Locked in a Room", which has quickly become a Top Selling Horror film on Google Play. "Locked in a Room" will also be released through Amazon, ITUNES, Blockbuster, & Vudu, which is a Video on Demand entity. "Locked in a Room" was directed by Larry Simmons, who was a Top 250 director in 2004 in the Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Project Green Light. Brian Thompson I was facinated to read about the meteor that was to pass close to the earth last weekend and decided to go and have a look from the garden. We turned out all the lights and, although I don’t have a telescope, got the old “binos” out and stood looking up to the sky. Sure enough, we were able to see it pass across the sky although it was very tiny, it was something to marvel at
have gone to bed and looking at the meteor made us realise what we are missing. We shall also be seeing if we can make the time to go star gazing with the local group on occasion from now on. This seems to all of us here at Casa Thompson an interesting and highly educational sunject for the whole family to enjoy so thank you, The News, for telling us about it.

Catholic on the whole) that have condemned this Pope for his past in the Hitler Youth but, in those days all the children and young people practically had to join up or be singled out and bullied in those countries. Also, one has to accept that he was probably too young to really know what it all meant anyway. I think that, on the whole he has been a good Pope and I wait to see who will be next. Perhaps a younger man may remain fit and healthy for longer and so

that we probably won’t see again in our lifetime. Our family has now decided that we shall be going out and buying a telescope, nothing fancy to start with – we don’t want to look like Goonhilly Down just yet! – so that we can all learn more about the universe we are part of. We have often sat on the balcony with a glass of wine (or two!) looking at the stars after the children
Mary McCready I am a Roman Catholic and, as most of us Catholics were last week I’m sure, was shocked to learn of our Pope’s resignation. I have to accept that this is his wish and I suppose in some ways he should have the right to retire the same as the rest of us but, I understand that the last time this happened was over 600 years ago and it’s generally accepted that once they are named as Pope, they stay there until they pass on. I have friends (not Roman

by be able to carry out his duties for longer and with more vigour but, we shall all have to wait for that white smoke to come out of the chimney before we’ll find out. Just a last note, personally I don’t care what colour he is either, just as long as he serves his church and its followers as best he can. It may even be refreshing for someone who is perhaps a bit more in touch with current thinking to take over. Who knows? We may yet have female priests!

going on strike from now until the 22nd of this month, then again from the 4th until the 8th March and again from the 18th to the 22nd March. I suppose we should be thankful that it shouldn’t hit too many people making their way here for the Easter holidays the following weekend but, for those who haven’t already booked, are they likely to want to run the risk of further disruptions? I run a restaurant here and rely on the tourists for my living. With the recession and other countries being just as cheap to visit, if not cheaper when you look at some of the Eastern Block, this is just about all we need. Every year, it seems, one of the airlines or another go on strike because they want yet more money, less working hours, more money in their pension pots
or some such thing and I think it’s about time they thought of someone who is already struggling and can’t afford to jet off to exotic places the way they do on their free flight concessions (which they seem to conveniently forget about as part of their pay package) and get on with the job they have. If they don’t like the job, and all the perks that go with it I would suggest they get a bit more “grounding·” in the real world by swapping their employment for a desk job in some office, pumping petrol at a garage, working in a shop or even cooking all day and half the night in a hot kitchen like I do.They don’t know they’re born! There are plenty out there who would give their right arm to have their job so, thanks a lot, you’ve just made my life even harder to make ends meet!
Comment By Ken Campbell
The Russian Meteor Last Friday morning a meteor sped across the Russian sky causing millions of pounds worth of damage and injuring over a thousand people.
I
can’t believe that it was only last week that I was writing about an asteroid that came within a hair’s breath of hitting the Earth on Friday night when lo and behold a meteor did hit the Earth and was filmed by dozens of CCTV cameras as a huge fireball streaking across the sky. It would seem that Hollywood got it dead right with movies such as Deep Impact and Armageddon as the images of the meteor in flight, its explosion and the remaining smoke trail seemed right out of a blockbuster movie.
A
meteor or shooting star is the name given to any piece of space rock that enters the Earth’s atmosphere. Because of the tremendous speed that the meteor is travelling at they are usually burnt up by the friction caused by the atmosphere. Most meteors are tiny, no bigger than a grain of sand but if the meteor is big enough, say over a metre in size, then it may survive the re-entry and eventually fall to the ground, when it is known as a meteorite.
T
he Russian meteor entered the Earth’s atmosphere at 9.20 am (3.20 GMT) in the Chelyabinsk region about 930 miles east of Moscow. New estimates describe it as being 55 feet in size and weighing around 10,000 tons. It would have been travelling at 33,000mph; at this speed the Earth’s atmosphere burnt away fragments of it causing it to leave a smoke trail in its wake. It flew in the atmosphere for less than 33 seconds before the bow wave pressure built up to such an extent that the meteor exploded at about 30 miles high with a force of 500 kilotons of TNT.
A
s the meteor was travelling much faster than the speed of sound the subsequent ‘sonic boom’ accompanied by the tremendous explosion caused widespread damage to windows and buildings. Most of the injuries were caused by falling glass and masonry. Fragments from the destroyed meteor have been found strewn over a wide area, with one large piece cutting a perfectly round hole in the ice of a frozen lake.
O
bviously with all the hype about the asteroid 2012DA14 passing so closely to the Earth on the same evening it was presumed that the Russian meteor was of the same family. But no, the meteor came from a completely different direction from the asteroid so the two were not related. It is simply an incredible coincidence that the two happened at almost the same time.
R
ussia seems to be prone to large meteor ‘attacks’. In 1908 another meteor of about the same size exploded over an unpopulated area in Tunguska. It devastated an area of about 800 square miles and flattened millions of trees in the process. Neither of the meteors actually made it to the ground but an air blast explosion can do just as much damage as an impact. The shock wave can spread out in all directions causing widespread damage. In terms of human casualties, Friday's meteor strike is the worst ever reported with over1200 people believed to have sought treatment after the fall. At least 34 of them were hospitalised, with two reported to be in intensive care. Before this there were only stories of a dog being killed in Egypt by a meteorite in 1911 and a boy being hit, but not seriously injured, by one in Uganda in 1992.
F
riday's unexpected strike highlights the need for better searches for dangerous asteroids, and a global strategy to deal with any that are seen. Astronomers feel confident that they know the whereabouts of every asteroid larger than 30 kilometers. Such space rocks have been the priority because they have the potential to cause global catastrophe and mass extinction events should they hit us. None are known to pose an immediate threat.
B
ut go down to objects sized one kilometre and astronomers think they know about 90-95% of them. However, at 50 metres, the size of 2012 DA14, the uncertainties really begin to worry. Astronomers estimate that they know only 2 percent of these. There could be hundreds of thousands of these smaller asteroids waiting to be discovered and if something of this size were to strike the Earth, it would devastate an area larger than London.

Britain’s track cyclists in Minsk
Five days of fast and furious action get underway today (Wednesday) at the Minsk Arena as the World Track Cycling championships 2013 begin. Great Britain's 16-strong squad includes six gold medallists from London 2012 and a new crop of young stars to replace Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton, with six riders making their senior World Championship debut. Elinor Barker joins Olympic champions Dani King and Laura Trott in the women’s Team Pursuit
SOL Classic Car Club – February News February has been a busy month for SOL Classic Car Club. On Thursday 7th 29 members and friends together with a contingent from the British Legion travelled by coach to Jerez for a day to watch the Formula 1 stars test the new season’s cars. It was the first time the two organisations had organised a joint trip and thanks to Run Coordinator, Ray Holland, and the British Legion’s Chris James, the day was a great success.
Some of the big names in F1 were there but Alonso had decided not to attend, leaving the way open for his team mate, Felipe Massa, to take the fastest lap of the day. Lewis Hamilton also missed the day but after his 170 mph crash the day before, that was understandable. His new team mate, Nico Rosberg was second fastest after 148 laps, which must have

SOL Classic Car Club member John Campbell took some remarkable photos of the cars (two of which are shown here).
On Saturday February 16th the monthly Club run was blessed with a dry sunny day for the first time in three months when17 classic cars – including a pristine Ford Escort Mark II belonging to new members Barry and Pauline from Competa – set off from Venta Platero in Coin. After a leisurely cruise through the orange groves and almond orchards climbing up into the Montes de Malaga, the group stopped in Barriada Pastelero at the Venta Hermanos Moreno where genial host Jose Moreno had prepared a welcome spread of tapas for the
hungry travellers. Then the drive skirted the stunning scenery of the Torcal range and onwards to the delightful town of Colmenar high up in the mountains with a splendid view of the snow-clad Sierra Nevada in the distance. There was a warm welcome at the Restaurante Balcon de los Montes where a magnificent lunch of local specialities had been prepared in the wood-fired oven. This really was a superb lunch with a selection of starters that had everyone satisfied before the huge plates of roast pork and grilled fish were delivered! There were 27 for lunch and several people said it was one of the best meals the club had ever had on a run.

Sutil back for testing Force India
Germany's Adrian Sutil and Frenchman Jules Bianchi will both test for Force India this week in the hope of taking the remaining seat available for the forthcoming Formula 1 season. Sutil, who was dropped by the team at the end of 2011 after being convicted of grievous bodily harm, will test the car in Barcelona on Thursday. Bianchi's test scheduled for Friday.

Bike navigation, new TomTom Williams F1 car
Last week TomTom introduced a brand new version of its TomTom Rider, a portable navigation device created especially for bikers. Following feedback from the motorcyclist community, TomTom Rider has been designed to give bikers the ability to choose the type of route they want to ride: from the fastest; to the most scenic; to their own personalised route.
Bikers can easily create and then upload their personalised routes direct to their TomTom Rider device. By downloading Tyre® interactive software, bikers can search, create and edit their own routes on a PC.
Alternatively, a unique ‘Upload Routes and Go’ feature enables bikers to upload routes directly to their device and share them with other bikers via Bluetooth®.
In addition, TomTom Rider includes a feature that feeds audio instructions directly to the user’s helmet via
Bluetooth®, meaning riders can fully concentrate on the road ahead. All-Weather Device
TomTom Rider has a new 4.3’’ glove-friendly screen, which responds instantly to touch and is designed for riding in any weather conditions, including rain or bright direct sunlight. The device also comes with a new charging bike dock that turns it on or off with the ignition of the bike. Free Lifetime Maps
TomTom Rider includes free Lifetime Maps. For the life of the product, users can download four or more full updates of the map on the device every year, which includes all updates to the road network, addresses and Points of Interest. Map Share
Users benefit from free Daily Map Changes from the TomTom Map Share community, which includes dynamic changes such as new speed limits
and blocked roads.
Map Share helps overcome the more frequent road changes and so avoid delays or detours. Points of Interest
Via TomTom Rider, users can access the Points of Interest feature to find interesting places to stop en-route, such as restaurants, motels and fuel stations. Personalised Points of Interest can also be added, for future reference.
IQ Routes TomTom’s IQ Routes uses real travel times for each and every road shared by millions of
bikers, therefore providing the optimum route and arrival time.
Williams were the final team to unveil their 2013 car yesterday (Tuesday,) and aim to continue progress made last year. The outfit were considered to be more competitive than the eighth place they gained in the

Malaga vs Spain
Anderson’s pride at beating Sir Ian Botham’s record
Santa Maria Bowls Club, February, 2013 Malaga scores impressive victory over the visitors Ten men and 10 ladies representing the Spanish National squad, from mainly Alicante and Almeria provinces, made
the trek to Santa Maria bowls club to play a match against the Malaga provincial team, under the auspices of the Spanish and Andalucian Bowling Federations. The result was not only an exhibition of excellent bowling and warm friendship between the two teams, but an important win for Malaga in both the men’s and ladies’ categories. The weather helped considerably, but best of all was the outstanding result after the first session in which Malaga won all the matches. In the remaining three sessions, the visitors proved the stronger, but were unable to overcome their
poor start. The highlight of the event, off the bowling green, was the visit of Maria Jose Figueira de la Rosa,
representing the lady mayor of Marbella, who gave a welcoming speech to the assembled bowlers. After two days of spectacular competition, the event was topped off with a very convivial gala dinner at the Villa de Laredo hotel, Fuengirola, where the visitors had been accommodated. Speech by speech confirmed the success of the event and the need to repeat it on an annual basis. Well done the two teams, the many spectators and members of the Santa Maria club who worked so hard to make the occasion such a great spectacle.
Team Malaga won both the Men’s and Ladies sections on points, (the main criteria), but the “consolation prize” for the
visitors was that they won on overall shot difference.

Chris Froome wraps-up first stage race victory Chris Froome safely negotiated the final day of the Tour of Oman to wrap up a maiden stage-race victory. The 27-year-old Brit crossed the line at the Matrah Corniche in Muscat as part of the peloton to consolidate a 27second triumph over Spain's Alberto Contador (Saxo-Tinkoff), with Australia's Cadel Evans (BMC Racing) 12 seconds further back in third.
The win was a landmark one for Froome but also a special one for Team Sky, who helped guide the Brit to the finish after working hard
throughout the race to capture and then defend the red jersey. A victory on stage five and a consistent run of finishes also laid the foundations for Froome to take the points jersey.
Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ) took top honours on the final stage, sprinting to victory ahead of Matthew Goss (Orica-GreenEDGE) and Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing) at the end of a 144kilometre final day that had started in Hawit Nagam Park, south-east of the Omani capital. Chris Froome, Team Sky Rider:
"It's been an incredibly successful week for us this week. The team has rallied around me all the way and having guys of the calibre of Bradley Wiggins helping you to win a race makes it a hell of a lot easier to be up there when the going gets tough.” Race report and photo courtesy of www.teamsky.com
Jimmy Anderson concedes he never expected to become England's highest wicket-taker when he first started playing international cricket. Anderson surpassed Sir Ian Botham's total of 528 in all formats when he dismissed BJ Watling in England's defeat to New Zealand on Sunday. The bowler, 30, told BBC Radio 5live: "It gives me a huge amount of pride. When I started playing for England I
of years." said Anderson.
Anderson made his international debut in a one-day game against Australia at Melbourne in December 2002 despite having played just five times for Lancashire.
"It has not all been plain sailing so I am delighted things have finished well at the minute and hopefully I can continue on for a number
Wayne’s weekly Poker Tips
Looking down at a wired pair of A's or K's will get those € signs whirling in your head. You’re a big favourite to win and how do we get paid the maximum? First of all, we don't want a family pot with three or four players in it – this reduces our chances of winning the hand, so I don't recommend limping with these hands. Heads up is best, so play the hand strong and if we run into AK, AQ or another high pair we will get the action we are looking for.
Now for a word of caution. AA and KK is not, I stress not, a guaranteed winning hand because 27 off suite has a win equity of 12.5% against AA so if the board looks dangerous slow down – you will reduce your winning but will reduce your lose should they out draw you. If you have AA and the board shows maybe 2 Qs or 2 Ks if we have raised pre flop slow down. Also look for straight and flush draws which could beat us, it's very difficult to lay down AA/KK so a crying call with a controlled pot is cheaper than losing a buy in with a crazy ill-thought-out
all in because you got married to an over pair. Ideally we are looking to get all our chips in the middle pre flop with KK but more so with AA, so if we are in late position and there is a raise in front of you 3bet! Don't over size the bet as we don't want them to fold – of course should they 4bet happy days jam the pot.
Normally we don't get so lucky with AA/KK so if our raise is called on the flop we need to make a continuation bet even if we hit a set, say no more than half pot size. We need to build a pot to maximise our winnings. The same applies to the turn, should they have called your flop and turn bet before betting the river think about what they are calling with. If you
BWS.
think it's a missed draw and they have position on you consider a check/raise as he may try to steal on the river where he may fold to a value bet having nothing. However if you feel they have an under pair possible paired top card on the board we can do two things here. Option 1, bet no more than half the pot which gives them show down value and will call or the 2nd option if you put them on a big K or Q is to over bet the pot which can appear like a bluff. So the secret is to bet what your reads tell you they may call.

Goal-line technology for 2014 World Cup FIFA have confirmed goal-line technology will be in place for the 2014 World Cup as it invited tenders to provide the system. Sepp Blatter, president of world football's governing body, had previously stated his commitment to bringing in goal-line technology for the tournament in Brazil. It was trialled at the Club World Cup in December, and FIFA will now roll it out for this summer's Confederations Cup and next year's World Cup.
Hero Willy saves Malaga Malaga 1 - 0 Athletic Bilbao After last week’s great win at Levante, Manuel Pellegrini sent out a strong team with no thoughts on Tuesday's Champion’s league match at Porto.
Saviola celebrates his goal
Malaga started well with new left back Antunes making foraging runs forward, and it was one of these down the left wing which brought Malaga's goal. The young 19-yearold Paizon, on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season, broke well to then cross for Saviola in the box to fire home and make it 1-0 to the home side.
As the match progressed Bilbao came more into the game as both teams were committed to attacking football. On 34 minutes Willy made the first of a number of fantastic saves, a double stop from

WGC Match Play World number one Rory McIlroy will play Shane Lowry in the first round of the WGC Match Play Championship in Arizona. The Northern Irishman, who was beaten by American Hunter Mahan in last year's final, plays Ireland's Lowry who gained his place when Phil Mickelson withdrew. Three-times winner and world number two Tiger Woods takes on fellow American Charles Howell III on Wednesday.
England's Luke Donald plays Germany's Marcel Siem, while Justin Rose starts against South Korea's KJ Choi.
Donald, who won the title in 2011, is ranked third and heads the Sam Snead quarter of the draw while McIlroy and Woods are the top seeds in the
Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan sections.
The review was ordered by the sport's governing body after Australia's swimmers saw their worst Olympic performance in two decades last year. It found standards and discipline were "too loose", and incidents of "intimidation" were not
addressed. There was a "dire need" for stronger leadership, the report found.
The top 64 players in the world are eligible to play in the tournament, which pits golfers against each other in a series of knockout matches.
Defending champion Mahan opens his campaign against Matteo Manassero of Italy, while other stand-out ties include England's 2010 champion Ian Poulter playing Scotland's Steven Gallacher and Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell taking on Ireland's Padraig Harrington. Spain’s Sergio Garcia takes on Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand
Australia's swimmers won just one gold medal at London 2012, far short of previous medal hauls at other recent Olympics.
Australia’s only gold came from the 4x100 freestyle relay girls

Paulo Di Canio leaves Swindon
Paolo Di Canio has resigned as manager of League One side Swindon. The 44-year-old Italian was set to quit last week because of off-field events, including the sale of Matt Ritchie. But the exWest Ham star said he would have stayed had the Football League agreed to the purchase of the club by new owners by 17:00 GMT on Monday. "I've been told approval has not been granted yet and therefore my temporary arrangement has ended and my resignation stands," he said.

Nadal wins the Brazil Open
Rafael Nadal won his first title since last year's French Open as he saw off David Nalbandian in straight sets in the final of the Brazil Open. The Spaniard, playing only his second tournament following a seven-month absence with a knee injury, beat Nalbandian 6-2 6-3 in Sao Paulo. Nadal broke twice in the first set and recovered from 3-0 down in the second to win in one hour and 18 minutes. He is next scheduled to play at the Mexican Open, starting on 25th February.
