International horsemeat scandal spreads further
Ikea has withdrawn meatballs from its stores in Slovakia, Hungary, France, the UK, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and the Republic of Ireland, after tests in the Czech Republic turned up traces of horsemeat in a batch made in Sweden.
Ikea's announcement on Monday came after the Czech State Veterinary Administration said horsemeat had been found in 1 kg packs of meatballs manufactured in Sweden and shipped to the Czech Republic for sale in Ikea stores there. A total of 760 kg of the meatballs have been intercepted and stopped from reaching Czech shelves. Horsemeat had also been found in beef burgers imported from Poland, according to the Czech State Veterinary Administration.
Ikea said it had not found any horsemeat during in-house tests on its own range of food products, carried out two weeks ago, but added that new tests would now be carried out. In a statement, it said: "We do not tolerate any other ingredients other than the ones stipulated in our recipes or specifications, secured through set standards, certifications and product analysis by accredited laboratories."

Former Partido Popular treasurer Luis Bárcenas admitted to the High Court on Monday that at one time he had up to €38 million in his accounts in Switzerland – almost double the €22 million that the Swiss authorities had originally reported to Spanish judicial investigators.

You’re kidding! I couldn’t believe the news last week about that woman with 11 kids who seems to think that the rest of the uK tax payers should pay for her. Sure her husband left her but, how many thousands of other women have been left by their husbands? And OK it’s rare but it does happen, men been left by their wives to look after their children. Most of them get off their bums, get a job and struggle through showing their children a great work ethic while they’re at it. All power to these people and they are the ones who should maybe get a bit of help when they need it. The welfare state should be there as a safety net for those who, through no fault of their own have mental and physical disability and for a few who need a hand for a while as they get themselves back on their feet. I’m sure nobody forced this female to produce 11 kids and as for the rest of the people who do work for a living and pay their taxes, paying for her to have a horse and for her to pay for her boyfriend to go on a flying lesson, she’s got to be joking! While the rest of us struggle through this woman is living the life of Reilly and it would seem that her older kids (who now have kids of their own) don’t work either. So, madam, I would suggest you stop whinging about your lot and pay your way like the rest of us and, if you want someone to look after your younger children while you’re out earning, there are your older kids doing nothing at home anyway so there’s your childcare ready made!

Also on Monday, the Spanish agriculture ministry announced that traces of horsemeat had been found in beef pasta meals produced by brands owned by the Swiss food giant Nestle. In a statement on its website, the company said it was withdrawing six "La Cocinera" products and one "Buitoni" product from shops in Spain, and that it had halted all deliveries from the meat supplier, Servocar.
Nestle said testing continued across its products, a week after it announced that it was withdrawing two types of beef pasta meals from supermarkets in Italy and Spain which had been supplied by a company in Germany, H J Schypke. A Nestle spokesman
told reporters that the discovery of horsemeat in the products of a second supplier was not an indication that the problem was widespread across the company, but because "we are testing like mad".
Europe's food retailers depend on a complex network of brokers, cold stores and meat-cutting plants around the continent from which to source the ingredients, wherever they are cheapest. The evidence of the past few weeks shows that national food safety authorities have failed to identify a problem in the supply chain over a significant period of time. The latest discoveries came as EU agriculture ministers met to discuss measures to tackle the

horsemeat scandal. These could include a panEuropean labelling project for frozen food, a move which has the backing of France and Germany. But a workable deal could be difficult. At least a dozen countries are involved in the horsemeat affair, which implicates some of the biggest meat processors and food producers. Italy joined the list on Saturday, reporting horsemeat in some lasagne products, a day after Germany's consumer affairs ministry announced it had found traces of horse DNA in 67 of 830 food products tested. Irish authorities on Friday suspended production at one processing plant after horsemeat was found labelled as beef.
After anticorruption prosecutors told Judge Pablo Ruz that Barcenas' “wealth abroad is quite substantial” and he is considered to be a flight risk, he ordered Bárcenas to turn over his passport, prohibited him from leaving the country and to report to the court every 15 days. During his threehour testimony, Barcenas said the money he had stashed abroad came from stock market earnings, as well as real estate and art sales. He said that from 1999 and 2007, the PP had received €23.7 million in anonymous donations and €9 million in registered contributions, adding that the funds were overseen and monitored by the Court of Auditors. Until 2007, political parties in Spain were allowed to receive anonymous donations. Balance sheets published by El Pais daily newspaper on January 31st show that the former treasurer kept track of bonus payments made to leading party officials, including Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, for nearly 20 years. Rajoy, who has denied the allegations, appears to have received

more than €320,000 during this period. Insisting that the money he has abroad was made from investments around the world, Bárcenas repeatedly denied that his Swiss fortune was linked to the ruling party. He agreed to allow the High Court to send a rogatory commission to Switzerland to investigate the origins of those funds. His lawyers told the judge they were waiting for bank statements from Switzerland to turn them over to the court. Court sources said that Bárcenas gave the judge and anticorruption prosecutors additional documents, but did not reveal their contents.
Dozens of journalists and onlookers waited for Bárcenas to arrive at High Court early on Monday. Amid the barrage of television cameras, he told reporters that he was “absolutely convinced” that he will prove his innocence and was ready to testify. Since 2009, Bárcenas has been at the centre of the investigation of the Gürtel contracts-forbribes scheme that took place in the regional PP governments in the Valencia and Madrid. In 2011, the former senator for Cantabria was able to convince the Madrid regional High Court to drop the inquiry against him, but anticorruption prosecutors appealed against the decision and the investigation continues.

At his court hearing last Saturday, Iñaki Urdangarin denied that his wife, the Infanta Cristina, and other members of the Royal household had been involved in the business dealings which have landed him in court on charges of fraud and tax evasion. Urdangarin, who received the title Duke of Palma in 1997 after he married King Juan Carlos's younger daughter, told Judge José Castro at the Palma de Mallorca court, that neither the king, the Infanta Cristina nor any other official in the royal household had offered him any advice or participated in the activities of the Nóos Institute – a sports foundation run by him and his former business partner Diego Torres. Prosecutors allege that Urdangarin used his royal connections to obtain

In his testimony to the closed court, Urdangarin insisted that, far from getting involved in his dealings at Nóos, he had been asked to end his association with the foundation, because the King did not consider his activities to be “adequate for my institutional status”.
Urdangarin’s denial of royal supervision contradicts statements made recently by his former partner, which have increased the pressure on the King. Torres told Judge Castro the previous weekend that Urdangarin did not make any move without royal approval, making public more than 200 e-mails to back his claim. Police arrested 45 people, including nine minors, after a protest against strict austerity measures in Madrid on Saturday, and charged them with vandalism and disturbing the peace.
Though the so-called "human wave" protest was mainly peaceful, as it dispersed dozens of youths started to attack the police, who later found four firebombs in a backpack abandoned on a street.
The Interior Ministry said they had also seized 22 firecrackers, five flares and a stick from two minors near Atocha station.
Some 40 people were hurt in the scuffles and needed minor medical attention, including 12 police officers, but no-one was seriously injured. Similar demonstrations
were also held in 16 cities across Spain, including Barcelona, Valencia and Vigo. Saturday was the 32nd anniversary of the attempted coup led by Civil Guard Lt. Col. Antonio Tejero.

The National Police have arrested five Bosnian pickpockets, all women, who have been "working" the Madrid Metro for the past 10 years and in an unprecedented move have banned them from setting foot in any of the Metro stations in the capital. The women have clocked up 330 arrests for petty theft between them and the police said they were a "perfectly structured" gang. They said their 30-year-old leader, the most veteran member, coordinated the gang's activities, while the
second-in-command is a 36-year old woman who does most of the pickpocketing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for which the police said she had a very special talent.

Spanish companies to build new Mecca
At least three of the country's biggest construction companies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; ACS, Ferrovial and FCC â&#x20AC;&#x201C; are set to get the lion's share of the â&#x201A;Ź35,000 million the Saudi government plans to invest in the building of a "new Mecca" in the desert.

The plan is to build 1,200 buildings, 25,000 apartments and the infrastructure necessary to connect the 40 districts

Jury returns guilty verdict
Crown Prince Felipe inaugurated the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona which is expected to be visited by 70,000 people from around the world, spending an estimated more than €300 million during their fourday stay in the city.
They will be able to examine first hand the latest developments in mobile phones, including the fastest smart phone presented by China.

Prince Felipe was shown the company's latest developments – such as being able to make purchases using a mobile phone instead of a credit card. It will also be possible to obtain what the company called a "remote medical diagnosis" via the phone. Barcelona has been declared the Mobile World Capital for the next five years. The MWC is the first international event to be held in the Mobile World Centre which recently
opened its doors in the Catalan capital. It will also host the Mobile World Festival (MWF), date yet to be announced. Fortyseven companies are exhibiting their wares this year, 19 more than the last MWC held two years ago.
The director general of Catalonia government's telecommunications department, Carles Flamerich, told reporters that despite the economic crisis, the mobile phone sector is flourishing and maintaining its vitality.
MP backs down on gender violence
The representative of the Union, Progress & Democracy (UP&D) party on Parliament's Equality Commission, Toni Canto, did a fast U-turn on Monday, after claiming on Twitter that most of the "denuncias" of gender violence presented by women were false. The Ministry of Health, Social
Services and Equality immediately produced figures showing that of the 134,002 cases reported in 2011, only 19 had no basis.
A spokesman said the Ministry had been rooting out false gender violence complaints since 2009 and the figures showed that on average they were less
than 0.01 per cent of all the "denuncias" made.
Canto apologised on Twitter for not making an effort to obtain official figures, after several women's associations rounded on him. They called his claim "intolerable" and said it showed that machismo is
still strong in Spain.

He also admitted to being a regular user of crack cocaine and LSd. a psychiatric assessment concluded that he had been suffering an "acute episode" at the time of the attack and that his mental illness was likely exacerbated by excess alcohol and drugs. Firemen refuse to evict homeowners
Firemen and locksmiths are refusing to help bailiffs open people’s doors to throw them out of their homes. Last week, firefighters in La Coruna, Galicia, who were called to help evict an 85-year-old woman who had defaulted on her rent, refused to open the door and some of them joined in the protest. Since then, firefighters in other regions such as Catalonia and Madrid have followed their example. they have been joined by locksmiths. david ormaechea, president of the Locksmiths Union, said: "Families' lives were being ruined and we were acting as executioners.”

Hostage crisis gas plant reopens
The remote gas plant at the centre of a deadly hostage-taking last month has partially resumed production. The Tiguentourine plant has been closed since the attack by alQaeda-linked gunmen who took hundreds of local and dozens of foreign workers hostage. After four days the Algerian army ended the siege by storming the complex, but 29 insurgents and at least 37 hostages were killed. The plant is now operating at about a third of capacity, reports said. Pinochet 'tried to cling to power'
Newly declassified documents from the US National Security Archive show that the late military dictator Augusto Pinochet wanted to hold on to power when he lost a referendum on his rule in 1988.
The documents say the general planned to do "whatever was necessary to stay in power." Pinochet sought the support of his closest military allies to overthrow the results but they refused and he had to accept defeat. The following year, Chileans elected a civilian government and Gen Pinochet was replaced in 1990. More than 3,000 Chileans were killed by the military government between 1973 and 1990 and Pinochet was facing numerous charges for alleged human rights abuses as well as corruption when he died in 2006.

According to Kantar Worldpanel during the four weeks ending February 17th, frozen burger sales plunged by 43% while frozen ready meals dropped 13%. Some of these figures could be attributed to the fact that a lot of ready meals had been removed from the supermarkets shelves.

"It might seem natural to attribute this decline to the horsemeat contamination; however, Tesco undertook heavy promotions this time last year, where consumers received a £5 voucher when they spent £40, and not repeating this offer will have adversely affected its share," Kantar Worldpanel director Edward Garner said. Meanwhile, Morrison’s have announced a decision to buy a number of Blockbuster video stores to convert into metro outlets, something they sadly lacked against the others
in the past. Morrisons is also expected to bolster sales in the coming months as it is the only major UK supermarket with its own abattoir division, assuring meat supply chain integrity.
However, there appears to be a growing split in the upper and lower edges of the market. "Waitrose and Aldi delivered all-time record shares this period of 4.8% and 3.3% respectively indicating that market polarisation and the 'two nations' consumer climate continues," Mr Garner said. "Iceland records 10.1% growth confirming that the frozen food category as a whole remains robust." Research now shows that the total grocery market is growing at a rate of 3.7%, which lags behind grocery price sector inflation of 4.3%. As a result, pressure continues on shoppers who are using 'coping strategies' to reduce their effective personal inflation rate. Medal for WWII heroes Vet murderer jailed Veterans who were part of the Arctic Convoys and Bomber Command during World War Two are, at long last, to be recognised for their bravery with medals.
The newly designed Arctic Star – based on the World War Two Stars and the Bomber Command gold clasp – to be worn on the ribbon of the 1939 to 1945 Star based on the Battle of Britain clasp will be received “within weeks” while production of the awards starts this week. They will be available to almost a quarter of a million veterans and their families. The decision to award the medals was announced by PM David Cameron last year.
Veterans’ Minister Mark Francois said: "All those who served our country in Bomber Command and on the Arctic Convoys deserve nothing but the utmost respect and admiration from us. That's why I am delighted that these special individuals will in the next few weeks begin to receive the Bomber Command clasp and Arctic Star that they have so long deserved. I am also pleased to announce that the families of those no longer alive will
also be able to apply for these awards in recognition of their loved ones' bravery."
It capped a long battle for recognition by Operation Dervish veterans, who embarked on what Winston Churchill called the "worst journey in the world" to keep supply lines open. More than 3,000 died. When the announcement was made towards the end of last year, Commander Eddie Grenfell, an Arctic Convoy veteran and leading campaigner for recognition, told Sky News that he was "pleased but not delighted" and accused Mr. Cameron of taking too long. "In the meantime God knows how
many of my Arctic Convoy chums have died waiting," said the 92-year-old from Portsmouth. Cmdr. Grenfell, rescued when his ship was blown to pieces on one mission, served in a number of theatres during the war but said none was as horrific as the Arctic. Once the conflict ended, he said it was impossible to campaign for a medal for helping the Russians because Moscow was then the enemy. When relations thawed after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, an attempt to secure recognition was refused because of a rule saying medals can be awarded only within five years of the end of a war. The Bomber Command clasp will attach to the 1939 to 1945 Star. Anyone who flew at least one operational sortie will qualify. US cruise companies interested
Several american cruise lines have told delegations from Malaga Port authority, the City Council and the Costa del Sol Tourism office that they intend to add Malaga port to their schedules of calls in the near future. The delegations have recently visited Miami and Seattle to hold promotional talks with the Carnival, royal Caribbean, azamara, Celebrity Cruise, norwegian, oceania-regent Seven Seas, Holland america, Seabourn Cruise line and Windstar cruise companies. More civil than religious weddings
Civil weddings continue to surpass religious ones, according to the national Statistics Institute (InE). In the first six months of last year, there were 1,468 civil ceremonies, while 769 couples were married in Catholic churches and 19 in other churches. That was a drop of 13 per cent over the same period the previous year. Malaga was the province of andalucia with the most civil ceremonies, with 65 per cent of those registered throughout the region, followed by almería (63 per cent), Cádiz (55 per cent), granada (55 per cent) and Huelva (52 per cent). Poor olive harvest
The manager of the almazara olive cooperative in ronda, Juan rosúa, estimates that production had dropped by 60 per cent because of climate factors. He said last summer was too dry, the autumn was unusually wet, and the frosts have been very heavy this winter. He said only 4.3 million kilos of olives have been collected, as opposed to seven million kilos in 2011. He said poor olive harvests in the rest of andalucia will add at least €1 to the price of oil in the supermarkets.

And whether we like to admit it or not, Fidel Castro vastly improved the lives of the Cubans before he fell under the sway of the Russians. Even the Russians themselves improved life for the downtrodden in the beginning, until Stalin started seeing enemies behind every blade of grass and under every stone. So we can't blame Andalucia's continuing backwardness on what I have come to call the Socialists dictatorship.
I
n fact, in comparison with the Andalucia of just 40 or 50 years ago, what we have today is Nirvana. I remember the roads my then Spanish fiancé and I biked along in Huelva, Cadiz and Malaga in the 60s. They were little more than cart tracks, with comparatively decent roads on the way down from Madrid stopping at Jaen, which I perceived as the gateway to Andalucia. The Costa del Sol was just a string of poor if picturesque fishing villages and Malaga city and the other provincial capitals belonged to another century. Then the tourists and people seeking a home in the sun started to arrive – bringing lots of lovely lolly with them and turning the Costa del Sol into the Costa del Cemento. Progress unfortunately has a price.

ndalucia became an autonomous region on February 28th, 1981, and has been governed by the Socialist Party ever since. After centuries of being the second poorest region in Spain – Extremadura being the poorest – it was only to be expected that the Andalusians would turn to the Socialists in the hope of righting all those historical social and economic wrongs. Yet whenever the National Statistics Institute or similar bodies publish figures on education, health, salary levels, etc. Andalucia always comes second from the bottom, above its age-old poorer cousin Extremadura, which was also governed by the Socialist Party until recently.

Dealing with the corrupt little man Writes for the English language version of
which – naturally – has hit the region and Extremadura harder than the rest of Spain. Andalusians have the reputation of being laid back, fiesta loving, irresponsible and inefficient but I think those traits are just part of the problem.
W
hat's happened basically is that the past has a nasty habit of reasserting itself if it is not well and truly put to rest once and for all. So what has happened here in Andalucia is that we have a new elite which is using its position in government to amass the fortunes that the old elite made out of their huge land and commercial holdings here and in South America. The phenomenon is perhaps more marked in Andalucia but it contaminates the rest of Spain to a larger or lesser extent.

very which way we turn these days we run into some huge corruption scandal or other, involving all the political parties but especially the main two – the Partido Popular and the Socialist Party. In fact, at the moment there are so many scandals running concurrently that those of us who try to keep up with them find ourselves floundering around as if in a swamp.
F
or the moment I've given up trying to understand what's happening, for the simple reason that most of the facts are being covered up or distorted by a hall of political mirrors. I watch the late night political chat shows and my heart aches for the journalists who are trying to tell us what is really going on. The trouble is that most of them have a political axe to grind. Is there nobody in Spain clear eyed and clear headed enough to tell us what is really going on?

o happy birthday, Andalucia, but I prefer to remember you when Seville was a beautiful city, not swarming with tourists, where a walk through the old Jewish ghetto, now called Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) took one back to the Middle Ages.

or the sake of argument, let’s suppose we are living in a united federation of Europe where strong banking and fiscal rules override national regulations governing financial institutions in each of the 27 member nations. As part of this structure, a hard-hitting criminal code covering all countries is strictly enforced. Europol has the power to come in and investigate, file charges and arrest anyone – from politicians to businessmen – in all the member states. There is no immunity for elected officials. Money launderers, fraudsters, and embezzlers of programmes involving European money would be put on trial in Brussels or, under a new continental-wide court restructuring plan, taken before one of the regional European courts established to cover the country where the crimes were committed.

uropol would have a greater presence in the 27 nations; in many countries we would see raids and arrests being made by a highly trained federal police force that would have broader jurisdiction than national police officers. White collar crime suspects and disgraced national lawmakers would be paraded before television cameras as they are hauled away. The Europol force would not be subjected to any type of political pressure from one nation.

nder Europe’s new speedy trial code, the amount of time between the arrests of suspects and the start of their trial would be limited to 180 days, with extensions given to defence lawyers for fair grounds. In other words, people like Luis Bárcenas would not be allowed to be flying to Vancouver for skiing excursions while he faces possible money laundering, tax fraud and illegal enrichment charges back home in connection to €38 million he purportedly had stashed away in Switzerland. His high-style living and blatant mockery of justice has ignited outrage across the entire country. It was only on Monday – more than three years since he was first placed under investigation for money laundering and tax evasion in the massive Gürtel corruption inquiry – that the High Court finally decided to declare him a flight risk and confiscate his passport. But under an iron-fisted European justice system, Bárcenas would have been put in protective custody and had all his assets in question blocked until the outcome of his trial.

ut we live in a sadder reality. There are no such rules governing Europe today; no continental police force allowed to assume jurisdiction in such cases. No
one is taken before a court at The Hague for white collar crimes; only human rights cases seem to get the high-profile merit, and those proceedings are usually long-drawnout proceedings with years passing before there is actually an opening trial date.

he dire Spanish judicial system is our only hope. The investigative and trial process is extensive and cumbersome, with large gaps between the time a person is formally told that he or she is a target of a court inquiry (“imputar”) and the trial itself. A large part of the problem contributing to this expanded litigation is the fact that there is no oversight on the initial investigative stage when suspects and witnesses are called to give statements before a judge. These probable cause hearings are secret – the public isn’t allowed – and they can go on for months before a decision, if any, is handed down.
I
t has been a year since Iñaki Urdangarin, the king’s son-in-law, was first subpoenaed to testify about the alleged embezzlement of public funds that took place at his non-profit Nóos Institute. He appeared before a Balearic Islands judge in August and again last Saturday, but we still don’t know how far along the investigation is or why is it taking so long. At the same time the Urdangarin inquiry, which has captured the international media’s attention, is tarnishing the Spanish monarchy’s image as an institution.

he criminal process that I have described above is similar to what has been long established in the federal system in the United States. The FBI is called in to help conduct exhaustive investigations in cooperation with the US Attorney’s Office and bring in any state or local public official before one of the 94 federal courts that cover the 50 states and insular territories. The US Justice Department’s investigative arm isn’t perfect but its power to stop public corruption through its white collar crimes unit is immense. Nevertheless, the reality check is that the States are not Europe, and Europe is not the US. But with political corruption not only destroying Spain but also other countries such as Italy, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece, it is time for the EC to propose introducing expansive criminal justice reforms so that certain corrupt councillor in that certain town located in that certain province in Spain can one day actually be hauled into court.

World Discredited Bulgaria´s Women’s Day Of Prayer Government steps down In a stagnated situation of crisis it is not only Bulgaria’s people who say “enough”, but the Prime Minister too. The former wrestler, police chief and Prime Minister Boiko Borisov, announced last Wednesday his intention – together with that of his whole team – to resign, as they were not going to rule a country while its very police were hitting its people, literally, on their noses.
Borisov, Prime Minister and leader of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB), has carried out several austerity measures in a country – the poorest among the EU27 – where the minimum wage is as low as 158 euros, a deficient indicator** when compared with countries such as Denmark or Luxembourg. Up to 22% of the population live below the poverty line in the Bulgaria. Recent demonstrations ended up with fearsome
results. At least 25 people were arrested and eight more injured by the police. Added to this figure should be the two police who were injured in these – violent at times – mass protests. With a citizenship close to exhaustion, the Prime Minister’s move could breach the wall they are stuck against to open a thread of hope in which a better economic situation may be foreseeable. As Bulgaria's President, Rosen Plevmev, said to a congregation of demonstrators recently, “the Presidency is open” to make Bulgaria a middle class country among its EU fellow economies. This could be predictable if it were not that the prior Government and current opposition were negligent in the financial area, stifling cases of corruption that agitated the whole
political arena of the country. Embarrassing corruption cases involving the Government have done nothing but further discredit politicians who are now completely distrusted by the majority of ordinary citzens. It is good to remember that in the 2009 election campaign Borisov played his cards with the apparent ambition of removing the struggle that Bulgaria´s democracy had with the corruption of some of his fellows.
Along with the nationwide protests that are being held in the country, a new generation of democratic young citizens is rising steadily to protect the institutions from the plague of corruption and systematic irregularities that stalk the political arena. The

Women’s World Day of Prayer is a unique organisation that speaks with the voices of women from all corners of the globe. On March 1st, women and men will be gathering all over the world to celebrate, using a programme of worship prepared this year by women in France. The theme chosen for them became close to their hearts: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me”. France, like other European countries, receives many asylum
requests. In 2011, 51,900 people applied for asylum in France. The presence of these people in the country enriches the culture but can cause social difficulties. Behind each request, each statistic, is the story of a life. Some of those stories will be shared in the service. This is where the Royal Airforces Association welfare comes in, together with social events, trips and all manner of gettogethers. The Royal Air Forces Association, Benalmadena Branch, think it is time the inland areas were made more aware of what RAFA is, and what they do. To start this campaign off, an Open Day is being held in Coin on Saturday 2nd March, at The Olive Tree, from 12 noon until 4pm. The branch will have their

display stand there, packed with information, plus lots of RAFA "goodies" including the Wings Bear, mini-bears, aircraft pins and postcards, and lots more. There will be a raffle with prizes including a year's RAFA membership and two tickets to the Easter Ball being held at Hotel Tamisa Golf. A light buffet is being laid on plus some wine. The normal excellent Olive Tree menu will also be available and, of course, a full bar service. This is the 70th anniversary of RAFA and this open day is part of improving the awareness of the association. Few people realise how much the association does for the Costa del Sol ex-RAF community. Nearly 1000 visitors crammed the Salón Linares in Benahavis on Sunday, February 17th, for the exhibition of contemporary art by local painters and sculptors and the event, was by general consent a triumph. For the exhibitors themselves the day was crowned by sales and commissions and many declared it the best they had ever attended. “The level of attendance and the enthusiasm of visitors and exhibitors alike were beyond all our expectations,” said Betty Fooks, chair of the BDFAS, adding: “We took a step into the unknown but thanks to the efforts of our remarkable team, we seem to have created a milestone event that we would certainly like to see repeated.” The exhibition attracted 17 of the Costa del Sol’s most talented artists, all of whom were present to talk

A charity auction for the A.I.D. animal charity is to be held on Friday March 8th starting at 7pm. This is to become a regular event with further dates of April 12th, May 10th and June 14th. Cloud Atlas has hit the American box office with a thud and the critics are split – is it a sprawling mess, a pompous and selfimportant reprise for the Wachowski siblings (Larry – now Lana – and Andy sparked like a firework with the first Matrix but the trilogy fizzled out) or is it compelling, amazingly creative and utterly brilliant? Well, you have nearly three hours to make up your mind. It’s based on the supposedly unfilmable book of the novel of the
same name by David Mitchell in which six stories are spread across six different times and each one is connected in some way. They include the diary of an 1849 voyage across the Pacific, a conspiracy at a nuclear power plant, a publisher escaping from an old people’s home and a tribe fighting for survival in post-apocalyptic Hawaii. Each main member of the ensemble cast appears in multiple roles, playing in some cases both male

and female characters (and spotting the actors under the prosthetics can distract a little from clinging onto the plot). So Hugh Grant plays six different evil characters – looks like himself as the dastardly head of the nuclear plant and is at his most colourful as the bloodthirsty cannibal warrior chief. Broadbent has the funniest lines and with young stars like Ben Whishaw added to the mix the stories crack along. It’s about actions and
consequences, and how individuals impact on each other throughout the past, present and far future. With many voices supporting it as an epic undertaking with mesmerising cinematography, matched by others condemning it as a bloated folly, whatever it is it is big and bold and hugely ambitious. So best try not to over-think it and let yourself be swept along, waiting for the pieces to come together.
The 'Give It Up For Comic Relief' show, which will be held at Wembley Arena on Wednesday, March 6th, will also feature performances from comedians Jimmy Carr, Noel Fielding, Eddie Izzard, Frankie Boyle, Simon Amstell, Doc
Brown and former One Show host Jason Manford. Russell Brand will host the show.
Other acts confirmed to appear on the bill for the fundraiser include Paloma Faith, Jessie J, Rizzle Kicks and Emeli Sande. Tickets went on sale at the beginning of February.

hat on earth was the Academy thinking when it nominated, not one, but eight Oscars for “Silver Linings Playbook”? Really! I am only horrified about this now as I only got round to seeing it last night. Due to the hype of the eight nominations, and Robert De Niro, I thought it could be OK – and that is exactly what it is, OK.

he story is boring and unoriginal. The best way for me to describe it would be; guy snaps and goes crazy and wife leaves him, guy tries to improve himself to get wife back, meanwhile he meets equally crazy girl who helps him get wife back, wife wants him back, guy falls in love with crazy girl.

n Sunday the 85th edition of the Academy Awards took place. Now, I am not going to talk about what happened, about who wore what, who won or even how offensive Seth MacFarlane was. Though, that said, I am ecstatic that Quentin Tarantino won Best Original Screenplay and Christoph Waltz got Best Supporting actor. Right, now to business.

hat I find irritating about this film is that it is so scripted, and Bradley Cooper (aside from the fact that he’s got a face I’d never tire of slapping) keeps overdoing the “crazy” scenes and then when he tries to be funny, he seems to be doing Dane Cook impersonations. There was one decent scene in the whole film and that was when De Niro gives the neighbour’s kid a telling off, Goodfellas style.

he whole film builds up to the dance competition scene, which is also disappointing, because in the “real” world there is no way, they would have been allowed
to compete in that competition. They were beyond amateur competing with professionals. That would never happen, and it’s an insult to professional dancers and dance competitions.
A
part from that, Cooper says “silver lining” way too much, the film is too long, the story is pointless, none of the characters are likeable, it’s predictable and most of all none of the four actors (Lawrence, Cooper, De Niro and Weaver) deserved Oscar nominations for their performances. Which now brings me to, Mr. Movie Director David O’Russell. Now, he was nominated for two Oscars, one of them being Best Achievement in Directing, I don’t know what he achieved, apart from irritating me. O’Russell’s biggest claim to fame is producing and directing the dreadful “I Heart Huckabees”, now if you remember how bad that film was, you will stand clear of any future O’Russell films.

ou see, where O’Russell falls down, is in his writing. An actor, can only be as good as the character that has been written. De Niro is a brilliant actor, but he has been in some stinkers. But give the man a well written character and script and you have yourself an Oscar worthy performance.

r O’Russell, take a leaf out of Tarantino’s book, learn to write, then learn to cast. I would also advise an original story, or something interesting, irritating he can do, now it’s time to try something new.

It is really quite cold this week, so here’s a warming family meal that, although not using the cheapest of meat, is well worth the effort
Italian Lamb and Potato Bake Ingredients:
• 6 lamb steaks- cut into portions • 2 kilos of potatoes • 250g cherry tomatoes – halved • 3 cloves garlic – minced • Parmesan cheese – grated • salt & pepper • handful of flat leaf parsley – roughly chopped • 2 tbsp olive oil + a drizzle
( Serves 6)
Directions Preparation and cooking times Prep 15 mins Cook 50 mins
Peel and finely slice the potatoes.
Drizzle about 2 teaspoons of olive oil in a roasting tin. Lay enough potato slices to cover the bottom, then season, and sprinkle some garlic, parsley, salt and a small handful of Parmesan. Lay on a few tomato halves and some chunks of meat.
Repeat the process until you have layer upon layer, rather like a chunky lasagna. Drizzle about 2 tablespoons of olive oil on top and sprinkle the remaining Parmesan on top.
Bake at 200 degrees C for about 50 minutes, and until the top becomes golden and crisp. Serve with some rustico bread to mop up all those delicious juices.

Brain's 'stroke shielding' cracked
Researchers have discovered why a part of the brain is able to shield itself from the destructive damage caused by a stroke. Treating a stroke is a race against time. Clots that block the blood supply prevent the flow of oxygen and sugar to brain cells, which then rapidly die. But in 1926, it was noticed that some cells in the hippocampus – the part of the brain involved in memory – did not follow this rule. "They're staying alive when the prediction would say that they should die," the researchers said.
Experiments on rats showed that these surviving-cells started producing a protein called hamartin – which forces cells to conserve energy. They stop producing new proteins and break down existing ones to access the
raw materials.
When the researchers prevented the cells from producing hamartin, they died just like other cells. They said: "We have shown for the first time that the brain has mechanisms that it can use to protect itself and keep brain cells alive." They now aim to develop a drug that can produce the same effect, which could be given when an ambulance arrived. This would buy the brain time until clot-busting drugs could be given in hospital.

British actors steal the show at this year’s Oscars
… but it was the cast of Les Miserables singing that left the audience with goosebumps. The 2013 Academy Awards (The Oscars) took place at the Dolby Theatre last Sunday with not many surprises for a change – other than 22-year-old Jennifer Lawrence falling over her frock, nice as it was, as she went up the stairs to collect her Best Actress Oscar for her part in Silver Linings Playbook. Picking up the Oscar, she said: "You guys are just standing up because I fell, and it's so embarrassing...". Before the ceremony, she quipped: "Today was so stressful. There was everybody in, my family got ready at my house. I felt like Steve Martin in 'Father Of The Bride' with all the furniture being moved around my house. I had no time to eat. I'm starving.” She was accompanied by her parents. Some had predicted the award would go to French actress Emmanuelle Riva who starred in Amour and at 86 was the oldest woman ever to be nominated, but it was not to be.
'Life of Pi' won the highest number of Oscars with four wins including Ang Lee as Best Director (he also won Best Director in 2005 for Brokeback Mountain), while 'Les Miserables' and 'Argo' scooped three awards. The latter won the top award, Best Picture.
Not such a surprise, because everybody had been talking about it, was Daniel Day-Lewis making Oscar history after becoming the first man to win the best actor trophy three times. The British-born actor was honoured for his portrayal of President Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's historical drama after he spent a year preparing for the role and, in his customary method, remained in character during the production. Accepting his Oscar from Meryl Streep, Day-Lewis said: "I really don't know how any of this happened, I do know I've received more than my fair share of good fortune in my life." He previously won in 1989 for My Left Foot and in 2007 for There Will Be Blood. However, his sister said the following morning on Sky News that she thought his best part was in Boxer for which he was trained by World Champion Boxer Barry McGuigan. Another British Oscar winner was Adele for best original song for her Bond theme Skyfall.
The tearful singer thanked her songwriting partner Paul Epworth for "believing in me all the time, and my man, I love you baby". She wowed the audience of A-listers in the Dolby Theatre with her first ever live performance of the 23rd Bond film's title track.
Ben Affleck's Iran hostage thriller, Argo, won the Oscar for best picture, despite the star being snubbed in the best director category. The nominees for best film were introduced by First Lady Michelle Obama from the White House, before she named Argo as
the winner. Affleck, who also starred in the film, paid tribute to the "genius" Spielberg whose film, Lincoln, lost out in the category. He added: "It doesn't matter how you get knocked down in life, all that matters is that you get up."
Anne Hathaway picked up the best supporting actress statue for her role in the musical Les Miserables. The star, who only featured as Fantine in the film for around 15 minutes, fought back tears as she said "it came true" and thanked her husband and everyone who worked on the film.
Christoph Waltz won the first award of the night, best supporting actor, for his role in Django Unchained. Waltz offered thanks to his character and "to his creator and the creator of his awe-inspiring world, Quentin Tarantino". It was the second time in three years he has won the category – his first Oscar was for his role in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. Tarantino went on to collect the prize for best original screenplay, also for Django Unchained.

Brave, the Scottish story of a rebellious, red-headed princess, won the Oscar for best animated feature. Amour, a French-language film about an elderly couple won best foreign language film which was accepted by its Austrian director Michael Haneke.
Skyfall also won the trophy for best sound editing, which was tied with Zero Dark Thirty. It is only the third time in Oscar history that winners have been tied.
007's adventures was introduced by one-time Bond girl Halle Berry.
And 76-year-old Dame Shirley Bassey took to the stage in a gold dress to sing Goldfinger which received a standing ovation.
But it was a medley of Les Miserables songs sung by the cast that left the audience with goosebumps.
The night of British success started with Jacqueline Durran winning for her costume design on Anna Karenina and the make-up and hairstyling award went to Lisa Westcott and Julie Dartnell for Les Miserables. The presentation of awards was broken up by a series of musical performances including Catherine Zeta-Jones singing All That Jazz from Chicago and Jennifer Hudson performing I'm Telling You from Dreamgirls. Out-of-town DI Alec Hardy investigates the mysterious death of an 11-year-old boy in an idyllic seaside community, aided by local girl DS Ellie Miller, who has her work cut out dealing with her unyielding new boss. Andrew Austin I do not know if this story or my dilemma will be of interest to you but I do feel it is yet another story of one of the major banks trying to legally steal money. My parents retired to Spain, as I am sure you are aware many older people do. My mother died in 1998 and in his grief my father neglected to remove her name from their joint bank account. This was understandable as they had been married for 49 years. At the time of her death there was roughly 3200 euros in their account Upon my father’s death in 2006 I was named beneficiary in his will. All necessary taxes were paid and I subsequently received the monies in his account – less half the money that was in the account at the time of my mother’s death. I was told that this was due to my mother not leaving a will and, at the time, I accepted this, thinking I would receive this at a later date Now nearly seven years after my father’s death and 14 years after my mother’s they will still not release this money to me. My father had to send my mother’s death certificate to the U.K. to dispose of property they had there and I have no idea where it is now. I do have both birth certificates and their marriage certificate and the branch has a copy of my father’s will. If my father had taken my mother’s name off the

account there would be no argument as this was his money and therefore under the terms of his will, now mine. We are not talking about a fortune but about €1600. It is not so much the amount but the principle. What right has the branch to keep this money? This was my father’s money so, what happens to this money? My father was a loyal Barclays’ customer both in the U.K. and in Spain for over 40 years with his personal and business banking and I myself am a Barclays U.K. customer. Isn’t it time Barclays repaid some of that loyalty and just released what is rightfully mine? In a recent speech when revealing Barclays’ results their C.E.O. Antony Jenkins said it will take years for them to regain people’s trust. We as a family trusted them with our money and to do what is morally right. The branch in question appears to ignore my emails and doesn’t return my calls, as if hoping I will go away! I have explained all this to the branch and instead of being helpful they seem to be deliberately obstructive. As I mentioned, does the bank just get to keep this money? Surely this is not right. If nothing else this could serve as a warning to others not to use Barclays Spain, as they accept our loyalty as customers but this appears to be a one way street. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your time.
Editor says: I am not a lawyer but, as your father was her closest legal heir at the time I would have thought that, once probate had been granted, he should have received the money and, as his heir according to his will, you should get it, or what is left of it, now. Had the branch been in the UK I would have suggested that your first port of call would be to the Banking Ombudsman who is usually very helpful, then I’m afraid you would have needed a solicitor if they couldn’t help which might have cost more than the sum involved. On the other hand you could always go and sit in their branch until you get satisfaction – that usually pees them off enough to get them to shift and they very often will do anything just to get you out of the branch, especially if you happen to be “chatting” with other customers while you’re there! But please check first about the legalities of doing that here in Spain – I wouldn’t want your next letter coming from the Alhaurin Hilton!
Melanie Clarke I attended the Conservatives Abroad dinner and speaker event last weekend and have to report that I was very pleasantly surprised. I am a single woman so was a bit worried about going to something on my own that I presumed would be full of 80-year-olds and rather dry – also, I’m not particularly political but wanted to hear what Colonel Bob Stewart (who was the advertised speaker) had to say for himself. The ‘do’ started at 7.30 with drinks and canapés in the
Mijas
Hotel Tamisa bar, followed by a very nice two courses of a three course dinner. Colonel Bob then got up to speak and his story was a fascinating one. He told us all about his army days with some quite hairy stories and it seemed that he was an MP that would not necessarily toe the party line and would “tell it like it is”. Quite refreshing from an MP. Also, the people were utterly charming and incredibly welcoming to me as a “newbie”. I will certainly go again.

Women Astronauts
In the male dominated world of space flight, it might surprise you to know that there have been a large number of women astronauts too!
N
ow fellas, we all know what sort of drivers women make and how none of them can park the car properly but when it comes to flying rockets it seems that some of them are quite good at it. The first woman in space was a 26-year-old Russian factory worker named Valentina Tereshkova (pictured). Apparently her unique ability to skydive from a very high altitude made her the first choice in the early Russian space programme. On 16th June 1963 Tereshkova was launched into space on board Vostok 6. She spent almost three days in space and orbited the Earth 48 times. With that single flight, she logged more flight time than the combined times of all the American astronauts who had flown before that date. he Americans were a little more sexist and it would not be until June 18th 1983 that the first American woman would fly on board the Space Shuttle. 37-year-old Sally Ride answered an advert in a newspaper and was chosen from over 8,000 applicants to join NASA as a trainee astronaut. In all she flew two missions on board Challenger and spent a total of 343 hours in space. I wonder if the rest of the crew could resist singing the song ‘Mustang Sally’ that contains the words ‘Ride Sally Ride’. y the mid 1980’s more and more women were being recruited and so NASA decided to send a civilian woman into space. The first American school teacher to go into space – or rather almost go into space – was Christa McAuliffe. McAuliffe was a 37-year-old high school teacher from New Hampshire who was selected to give lessons from orbit on board the Challenger Space Shuttle. On January 28th 1986 along with six other crew members she boarded the Shuttle. But just 78 seconds after launch Challenger exploded. On that day, Christa McAuliffe – along with Judith Resnik – also became the first women to die almost in space. ritain’s first astronaut was also a woman. Helen Sharman was working as a research chemist for Mars confectionery, experimenting with various flavours of chocolate, when she heard a radio announcement asking for astronauts ‘previous experience not essential’. She applied along with 13,000 other applicants and was eventually picked not only to be the first Briton in Space but also to be the first woman to visit the Russian MIR space station. She spent an intensive 18 months training at Star City until finally launching in a Russian Soyuz rocket on 18th May 1991 aged 27. Helen spent eight days on board

My friend Norman and I spent two days with Helen Sharman at a Butlins holiday camp in 1995 and over a packet of After Eight mints she told us of her time in space. o date, 56 women have flown in space, out of a total of 525 space travellers – that’s about 10%. Geographically there’s been one from China, France, UK and South Korea, two each from Canada and Japan, three from Soviet Union/Russia, and 45 from the United States. hile the Soviet Union sent the first two women into space, only three of all the women in space have been Russian or Soviet. The British GT3 series has rejected applications from Sony’s PS3 GT Academy to race in the 2013 series because, essentially, the drivers are too fast, reports GTPlanet. The odd situation has arisen following the outstanding success of previous GT Academy entrants. Many of the Club’s members, and regular visitors, are drawn from the excellent Caravan & Campsite facility at Cabopino. This resulted in the “Campers” issuing a formal challenge to the other club members with the event being generously sponsored by the Campsite.

Wayne’s weekly Poker Tips Poker must be viewed as one long lifetime game instead of many short sessions. The reason for this is over the course of thousands of hands the best hand wins the correct amount of time. Poker, however, is full of shortterm variance (often called luck), which can be extremely frustrating.
Despite losing when the odds are overwhelmingly in your favour, the goal of winning poker is still to put yourself in this type of situation as many times as possible – because when you do, you will win most of the time. The best way to achieve this is to manage your poker odds. In other words do we have the odds to call – sometimes the pot odds are so great we have to call with any two cards.
Let’s assume we are in a hand and we have odds of around 4:1 against winning this hand. To decide whether or not we should call our opponent's bet depends on how much money is in the pot. No, we don't mean that if there's a whole bunch of cash you should just go for it. What you should be looking for is the ratio of money you could
win compared to the size of your opponent's bet.
To continue our example. Let’s say there was €90 in the pot and your opponent bet €10. That makes a total of €100 in the middle of the table just waiting to be won. You need to match your opponent’s bet of €10 to see the river card, so it’s going to cost you €10 to see if that last card is going to be one of the nine you need to win. If you can win €100 by betting €10 then you are getting odds of 10:1 on your bet. Compare this with your
4:1 chance of winning. With 4:1 odds you would be being offered the chance to win €40 when betting €10. But in this situation you are being offered the chance to win €100 for a €10 bet. Should you call that bet? Yes, and you should do it faster than an eye can blink because the odds are offering you the chance to enjoy a great pay day. There is a great poker tool called Poker Stove. The Campers Team started well but it wasn’t long before the Santa Maria team established their superiority. Ultimately the club won on all 7 rinks by 166 shots to 75 shots. Perhaps, as this is to become an annual challenge, a handicap may be in order next year?
The special “Challenge Trophy”, put together by two of our two monthly visitors, Peter Burton and John Hawkins, was presented to Santa Maria’s team captain ( John Warn ) by Chris Hussey whose
brainchild the event was.
Prizes were presented to Santa Maria’s two best winning rinks and to the two most, and two least, successful rinks for the “Inmates”. An excellent morning all round and everyone expressed their sincere thanks to the Campsite for their sponsorship.

Matt Kuchar won the WGC Match Play title as England's Ian Poulter moved back into the world's top 10 with a fourth-place finish in Arizona. Poulter lost to Jason Day in the third-place play-off after suffering a heavy semi-final defeat against Hunter Mahan earlier on Sunday. GB cycling coach Shane Sutton predicts 'great' rio olympics
Shane Sutton says Britain's track cyclists are "heading to greatness" at the 2016 Rio Olympics after topping the medal table at the World Championships. A youthful team won nine medals from 19 events in Belarus, five of them gold. Head coach Sutton said: "If you look at where we were at the beginning of the last Olympic cycle, we are in a much stronger position. Arriving in time for the second half of the Six Nations and the climax of the football season, the app provides news of all major sports, along with live text coverage of many different sports. The app has a live football scores section and the ability to play live and on-demand video. A version for Apple's iOS devices was launched earlier in 2013.
