Osborne in bankers’ bonuses battle
Chancellor George Osborne flew to Brussels on Tuesday, determined to water down the European Parliament's proposals to curb bankers' bonuses.
But EU finance ministers in the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (Ecofin) approved last week's proposals, which include limiting bonuses to 100% of a banker's annual salary, or to 200% if shareholders approve.
On Monday, a spokesman for Prime Minister David Cameron said the UK continued to have real concerns on the proposals and was in discussions with other member states. But Mr Osborne's bargaining power was
weakened by Switzerland's recent decision to cap bonuses paid to bankers and give shareholders binding powers over executive pay.
Some EU ministers have looked with approval on the Swiss move, made in a national referendum on Sunday. French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said: "The Swiss often show the way and personally I think we should take inspiration." CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Also, we have just had a visit from little Poppet, the puppy that was found, terrified, in the middle of the road a couple of weeks ago by my husband and brought in here. She is heartbreakingly gorgeous, seems to have grown by three times and was on her way to a new home. The people have an old dog she has to get on with so we’re all hoping it works out. If not, I might just have to have her myself, so let’s hope it works! This last week I have been suffering with a dreaded case of the ‘flu. I am normally pretty healthy so this really laid me out. Still, as long as I stay sitting down, I’m unlikely to fall over with my balance being shot to pieces at the moment. I suppose if I fall off my chair we’ll all have a good laugh as I will look like a parrot falling off its perch! Joking aside though, to all you fellow sufferers: this is horrid and I sympathise! And to Jackie Rice whose big Birthday Party I couldn’t get to on Sunday, enjoy the rest of your Birthday week with the girls and boys and thank you for looking after my animals so wonderfully which gives me the freedom to get away now and again. I couldn’t do it without you!

Interior minister under fire for gay remark Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz has faced calls for his resignation from several quarters since he said last week that "religious reasons" were not arguments against a law allowing gay marriage. Jobless top 5 million Towns cannot people for first time outlaw burqa The Supreme Court has ruled that municipal governments do not have the authority to "limit religious freedom" and therefore cannot pass laws that limit or prohibit the wearing of burqas.
The number of people registered as unemployed with state employment offices has risen above five million for the first time in history, according to figures released on Monday by the Labour Ministry.
The increase in joblessness in February was 59,444, a rise of 1.19 percent taking the overall total to 5,040,222. The February rise is the lowest for that month since 2008.
However, according to the Active Population Survey compiled by the National Statistics Institute, the real number of people out of work is almost six million, which takes into account the fact that many people do not register as being out of work, especially if they are not eligible for any subsidies or have not worked long enough to be eligible for dole. Social

registrations fell by 28,691 people, which means that the total number of people in the active work force is 16.1 million, the lowest level in the past decade.

Madrid to challenge sovereignty declaration Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría said at a press conference after the regular Cabinet meeting last Friday that the government will challenge the legality of a sovereignty declaration made by the Catalan regional parliament in January with the Constitutional Court. The decision was made
after the government received support to do so from the State Council, a consultative body whose rulings are nonbinding.
The Council ruled last Thursday that there are sufficient legal grounds to dispute the Catalan assembly’s declaration that the Catalan people constitute a "sovereign political and
legal entity". Sáenz de Santamaría told reporters that the declaration “was incompatible with the Constitution”.

Second Iberia strike under way
In response, Catalan premier Artur Mas said it was “out of place” for the Cabinet to challenge the declaration and called on Madrid to change its attitude.
As thousands of Iberia employees occupied Terminal 4 of Madrid Barajas airport at the start of their second fiveday strike to protest against the loss-making airline’s plans to lay off some 3,800 workers (about 19 percent of its workforce), a company spokesman said during a TV interview on Tuesday that it was willing to discuss reducing the number of lay-offs and offering higher severance pay.
The unions had originally announced
three five-day strikes – with the next one taking place from March 18th to 22nd – but have since threatened to strike during Easter Week which would spoil the holiday for millions of Spaniards and foreigners. This week’s stoppages will cause the cancelation of an estimated 1,300 flights, including those of other carriers that use Iberia’s ground handling services.
Iberia has managed to find alternative flight arrangements for 95 per cent of the passengers affected by the strike.
Justo Perla, the president of the pilots’ union Sepla, reiterated claims that British Airways, which merged with Iberia at the start of 2011 under the holding company IAG, plans to dismantle the Spanish carrier to get its hands on its assets on the cheap. The unions and Iberia’s management have agreed to non-binding arbitration in their dispute. The mediator, university professor Gregorio Tudela, is due to deliver a report this week.
King's operation successful Neurosurgeon Manuel de la Torre said on Sunday that the three-hour surgery he had carried on King Juan Carlos to correct an old spinal problem had been successful. The king spent Sunday night in intensive care but was moved into a private room on Monday.
De la Torre said the king’s recovery will take from between two and six months. He said the king would probably spend the rest of the week in hospital. Later, the Royal Household said the king would take up his normal duties as soon as possible,

The number of Spaniards worth over $1 billion has increased to 20 from 16, despite the ongoing economic crisis. Amancio Ortega, the founder and majority shareholder of leading fashion retailer Inditex which owns the Zara brand, has moved up to third place in Forbes magazine’s 2013 list of the world’s richest men, knocking US investor Warren Buffet out of the top three for the first time since 2000. Ortega's personal fortune is estimated at
€43.8 billion. The world’s richest man remains Mexican telecoms magnate Carlos Slim with €56.19 billion, followed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates with €51 billion. The second-richest Spaniard on the list is Rosalía de Mera, cofounder of Inditex with former husband Ortega, who is in 195th position in the rankings with a net worth of €4.7 billion.
After Ortega and his former wife, the richest Spaniards include Juan Roig, the chairman of
supermarket chain Mercadona, in 219th position with a net worth of €4.2 billion, and Isak Andic of the fashion retailer Mango, who is in 248th place with a personal fortune of €3.8 billion. The former owner of real estate company Fadesa, Manuel Jove, who sold out before the property bubble in Spain burst, and Daniel Maté, a director of Swiss commodity trading and mining company Glencore both tie for 527th

Spaniards live the longest Although millions are out of work and millions more are struggling to make ends meet, Spaniards have the highest healthy life expectancy in Europe, according to the latest EU statistics, which showed they also live longer than the people of Australia,
Canada, Norway and the USA. Spain ranked seventh on the only table produced by the World Health Organisation in 2000, above the UK at 18th.
One of the major factors that contribute to this
longer living is the state of health of the people when they go to see their doctors, which is attributed to their Mediterranean diet, heavy on fruit, salads, fish and olive oil. This is also responsible
for the low death rate from heart disease.
Spaniards also do well on a number of cancers – pancreatic, prostate, breast and oesophageal. Premature deaths from falls are also low.

Bankia turns in record loss
Bankia – formed from the merger of seven floundering savings banks – has reported a record loss of €19.2 billion for 2012. Last year, Bankia and its parent firm, BFa, received aid of €18 billion after asking for EU funds to help rebuild its capital. Bankia was born out of the merger of seven savings banks that were highly exposed to Spain's property sector, which crashed five years ago. The Bankia-BFa group as a whole made losses after tax of €21.2 billion in 2012. Bankia's seven component banks were severely damaged by their loans to property developers and home buyers during the country's property bubble that ended in the late 2000s. The bank's shares were suspended at the start of the year.

World News Berlusconi 'hosted prostitution parties'
Italy's former PM Silvio Berlusconi hosted prostitution parties at his Milan villa and paid women with favours and cash, prosecutors at his trial said on Monday. Prosecutor Antonio Sangermano said the parties organised at the villa in Arcore, north-east of Milan, were the "expression of a tried and tested prostitution system organised to satisfy the sexual pleasure of Silvio Berlusconi, and of which the young Moroccan girl was completely a part". In his closing arguments, he said that the parties involved dinner, erotic dancing and
then sex between aspiring television starlets and the invited guests. Berlusconi said he was "a bit surprised and amused" at the "imaginative" description of his "infamous dinners". He is on trial for paying to have sex with an underage prostitute, Karima El Mahroug. He said he had never had to pay for "intimate relations" and both he and Ms Mahroug – better known by her stage name "Ruby Heartstealer" – have denied ever having
sex. The case is the most recent one of several that have dogged the former prime minister.
In the last case, he was convicted of tax fraud in connection with the purchase of broadcasting rights by his Mediaset TV company. He was sentenced to a year in prison and barred from holding office for five years – though this will not be enforced until his appeal is complete. He faces up to 15 years in
prison if convicted, though nothing will be finalised until he has been allowed to appeal twice – normally a lengthy process in the Italian legal system. The continued scandal around the 76-year-old has made other parties increasingly reluctant to work with him in parliament after last week's inconclusive election, where his centre-right group achieved second place. A verdict in the trial is expected later this month.
Chavez suffers WWII veteran & severe infection Tojo captor dies Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is suffering from a new, severe respiratory infection following cancer surgery, Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said on Monday, adding that his condition continued to be very delicate. Chavez, 58, returned to Venezuela last month after being treated for cancer in Cuba, but has not appeared in public since. Chavez, who has been in office for 14 years, is believed to have cancer in his pelvic area, but his exact illness has never
been disclosed. Since he announced in June 2011 that he had cancer he has undergone four operations, as well as chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
The president was reelected for another six-year term in October 2012, but the Supreme Court ruled that his swearing-in on January 10th could be delayed because of his illness. At the weekend, hundreds of Venezuelan students and opposition members marched in Caracas demanding full details about President Chavez's health.
The US soldier who arrested Japanese Prime Minister Gen Hideki Tojo to face trial for war crimes at the end of World War II has died aged 93. John Wilpers was the last surviving member of the team that captured the Japanese leader on September 11th, 1945. Tojo had just shot himself in a suicide attempt when the five-man team of Americans arrived at his house. Wilpers is credited with keeping him alive. He seized the weapon from
Tojo and held a Japanese doctor at gunpoint, ordering the man to treat the wounded general until an American doctor arrived.
The Japanese leader survived and was brought to trial, where he was convicted as a Class A war criminal. He was executed in December 1948.
Wilpers went on to spend 33 years working for the Central Intelligence Agency. He retired from the US Army reserve in 1979 as a colonel.

Proposal to end ivory trade
Prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has announced that she will amend her country's laws to ban the legal trade in ivory. She was speaking at the opening of the Convention on international Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites) in Bangkok on Monday. There are about 6,500 elephants in Thailand, of which 2,500 live in the wild. ivory taken from domesticated elephants can be legally sold in the country but campaign groups and scientific experts say that this law is being used to "launder" ivory taken illegally from Africa. Thailand is believed to be second only to China as a market for tusks, often brutally removed from elephants across the continent. it is estimated that between 50 and 100 African elephants a day are being killed to meet the demand. Premier Wen Jiabao promised stable growth, anti-corruption efforts and better welfare provision when he opened an annual session of parliament on Tuesday. This National People's Congress will see the final stage of the country's once-in-adecade leadership change. China's new leaders will inherit a far more vocal public than their predecessors faced, with social media now forcing them to address public concerns more than they ever have before. On the eve of the Congress, the media reflected high public expectations, reporting demands for action on corruption, education, social care, the environment and inequality. And after Mr Wen's speech, internet users posting on weibo, Chinese versions of Twitter, expressed frustration with his failure to present specific solutions to particular concerns, such as water and air pollution, or the wealth gap.

Prime Minister David Cameron has insisted the Government will stick to the course it is on after seeing the Conservatives beaten into third place by the UK Independence Party in the Eastleigh by-election. Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, Mr Cameron suggested voters were impatient for change after years of decline under a Labour government and felt problems were not being fixed fast enough. UK benefit Two Tones fraudsters in Spain The British Embassy in Madrid has issued a press release which warns UK benefit fraudsters living in Spain of a new cooperation between the Spanish and British authorities. The new exchange of information will also include the deaths of British nationals in Spain and is specifically designed to curtail the kind of illegal activity where payments continue to be made to those no longer entitled to them. The Embassy quotes a recent case of a couple living in the Málaga province who defrauded the UK government of £39,000. The couple continued to falsely claim benefits for the man´s father long after he had died. In addition to being ordered to re-pay the money in full they were both given prison sentences – the man got 18 months and the woman received two prison sentences, one of 30
months and another of 18 months to run concurrently. The press release stresses the importance of reporting any change to the Department of Works and Pensions which could affect a benefit payment and goes on to encourage the reporting of known benefit fraudsters living in Spain to the DWP. Three arrested
Two men aged 37 and one aged 35 were arrested after four live mortar devices were found in Letterkenny Road, Londonderry in the back of a white Citroen Berlingo van that had had its roof cut out to accommodate the bombs. Around 100 homes had to be evacuated while Army bomb disposal experts dealt with them.
While the Queen was in hospital earlier in the week, many viewers of the news on TV were astounded by the spectacle of the two policeman standing guard outside. PC Anthony Wallyn, who is 7ft 2in (2.18 metres) tall and Britain’s tallest policeman, was stationed alongside the smallest officer in the Met's Westminster Borough Support Unit, PC Tony Thich, who is 5ft 6in (1.67 metres).The pair, known by their colleagues as Big Tone and Little Tone, stood at the entrance of King Edward VII's Hospital in London on Sunday while the Queen received treatment

The father-ofone, who wears size 17 shoes, said: "I get 100-500 requests for a photo each day. It's like being famous but without the money. It's happened every day of my life. Local News Row over Dog Day Fuengirola will hold its 4th Dia del Perro on April 14th, which has annoyed die-hard Republicans in the Socialist Party because that was the date in 1931 that the Second Republic was declared.

Banderas gives emotional speech Antonio Banderas brought tears to the eyes of everyone present at the ceremony naming his "Andalucia's Favourite Son" on February 28th, Andalucia Day, when he recalled the other person honoured – 24-year-old trade unionist Manuel José García Caparrós, who was assassinated in Malaga on December 4th, 1977, during a demonstration demanding autonomy for Andalucia. Banderas said: “The bullet that killed you could have been lodged in any of us who were near you that day. It could have been for me and everything that has happened to me since then would have been erased. The things I have seen, the people I have loved, the daughter I have, the battles I've won and those I've lost would not have existed. That is what they stole from you. That is why today they are doing you justice, they want to give you back what was taken away from you".

Triple killer detained
luis Miguel briz Torrico, 34, was imprisoned without bail on three charges of homicide last Friday, after allegedly killing his father, mother and sister the previous day. Mayor Francisco Toscano, said briz Torrico had a high iQ and had several university degrees but appeared to suffer the same genetic disorder that affected other members of his family. Neighbours said they had heard the family arguing on Thursday and that Torrico had ordered three wreathes earlier that day. He was seen wandering in the street, talking to himself, before entering a local bar where he talked about the crime. No falcons for Mosque
The City Council has rejected a proposal from the Mezquita Cathedral to use falcons to do away with the pigeons which the monument's authorities say are damaging the building. The plan involves installing artificial nests containing peregrine falcon nestlings on different buildings in the city's historical centre around the Mosque so that over the next five years they would clear the area of pigeons. However, the City Council is now treating the proposal as if it were made by a private company and not a UNESCo World Heritage Monument which has forced the Mezquita authorities to rethink the project. Falcons have been used successfully to protect the Sacred Family Church in barcelona and the Cathedral in Palma de Mallorca.

ntil just a few days ago, his followers were convinced he was going to recover, but the latest news of a worsening of a respiratory infection released on Monday would seem to indicate that the government has decided to prepare them for the worst. But perhaps it's too late. Having been kept in the dark for so long before suddenly being dragged into the light could turn the public mood ugly. Most of Chavez's followers live in the slum areas – which he failed to clear – on the hills that completely encircle Caracas and which are home to some three million people. If they turn ugly and come pouring down into the "decent" Caracas in the valley, the bloodshed would be horrendous. I can only hope my many friends there have already hotfooted it out of the city.

ews of Hugo Chavez's rapid decline should be making me delirious with joy but in fact it's giving me a panic attack. I can't for the life of me remember where I put the photograph of me accepting a Merit at Work award from him, which I rashly promised to publish when he dies. But if he doesn't die right this minute it will be too late for this week's edition anyway. (I've just checked – he's still alive).
n fact, the longer it takes him to die, the worse it will be when he finally does bow out. The acting government in Venezuela has kept the public in the dark about the real state of his health but anyone who knows Chavez knows it must be very bad. Since December 11th, there hasn't been a peep out of a man who thought nothing of hogging the country's air waves for hours on end every Sunday, or any other day for that matter. Since they sent him home from Cuba, nobody outside his immediate circle of ministers and family has seen him or heard him. According to one newspaper, he has already been sent to the presidential vacation island of La Orchila to spend his last days there quietly with his family. Officially, he's still in the Military Hospital in Caracas. And we've never been told exactly what sort of cancer he has.

uring the years I lived in Venezuela, when I read how the Europeans bitched about their governments, I used to think – let them come here, or even better, any Central American country – and live even if only for six months. They'd soon go rushing back home and stop complaining – at least for a few months.
he Partido Popular has become a true headline grabber over the past several months. Not since the Transition, when the different political forces had so much to say about where Spain was heading, has there been so much focus on the throw-away comments by government officials. Unfortunately, the damaging statements being aired by our misguided leaders have only added more tension to the explosive social situation; they have been confusing, insulting and just downright dumb. The latest gem came last week from Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz, an ultra right-wing Catholic who still cannot accept the fact that the Constitutional Court has upheld same-sex marriage. During a symposium on February 27th at the Spanish Embassy in Rome, this Opus Dei follower explain to a group that religious arguments regrettably cannot be used to oppose homosexual unions. “There are rational arguments to back the idea that these marriages shouldn’t have the same protection under the law as normal ones. For example, the survival of the species is not guaranteed.” A very helpful statement coming from someone who has sworn before God, king and Constitution to uphold Spanish laws and protect society. My favourite retort came days later when the PP tried to distance itself from what it called Fernández Diaz’s own personal opinions. Agustín Conde, a PP deputy who represents Toledo, said that yes maybe “gay marriage doesn’t guarantee the continuation of the species but neither does celibacy,” referring to the Catholic clergy’s vows.

Having said that, the cows in European byres and the pigs in European sties have a better standard of living than many Africans, Asians, South Americans and Haitians.

ne of the most pointed intimidations that will go down in the history books, and that has driven a wedge between the central government and the restless Catalonia region, was the veiled threat made last year by Culture Minister José Ignacio Wert who vowed to “Hispanicize all Catalan students” through his education reform by forcing them to use more Spanish in the classroom instead of their regional language.
o doubt the PP could use some good coaching on public speaking. We all put our worst foot forward sometimes when it comes to making excuses for a controversy. Take Maria Dolores de Cospedal, the PP secretary general, brave enough to show her face to try to explain why Luis Barcenas, the embattled former party treasurer who stepped down in 2010 after he was targeted in a corruption inquiry, was still receiving a salary. She insisted to reporters that the monthly payments Barcenas was getting up until the early part of this year was his severance pay spread out in instalments. In defending the PP
actions for also paying his social security and including his tax deductions in the payments as it would do with any other regular worker, De Cospedal likened it to “a simulated salary" but continued to insist he was not on the payroll. Barcenas gave us another story. In a lawsuit filed last Friday against the PP for “unjust firing,” he claimed that he was dropped from the official party payroll on January 31st without his knowledge after he had been working as a consultant since he stepped down as treasurer in 2010.

rime Minister Mariano Rajoy has also fallen into this mumble-gumble fray when last month in Berlin he had a difficult time explaining what was true and what wasn't true about the infamous ledgers allegedly penned by Barcenas that show he and a host of PP officials have been getting fat bonuses on the side. few weeks later, Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro gave us a crackerjack of an innuendo when he accused many in the Spanish film industry of tax evasion. This minister, who has also had trouble explaining the Bárcenas affair – whether or not the ex-party treasurer took advantage of the government's tax amnesty programme to clean some €10 million he had stashed away in Switzerland – went on to attack many in the movie industry who days before had lodged harsh criticisms against the Rajoy administration while accepting their Goya awards. “We haven't had our own Gérard Dépardieu here; we don’t need to, because some of our famous actors and actresses don’t pay their taxes in Spain,” Montoro said in Congress, referring to the French movie star who acquired Russian citizenship to protest against France’s wealth tax. Of course, Montoro never indicated who wasn't paying taxes.

The villagers are up in arms and call a meeting in the village hall to oppose the plans. However, when they arrive they find that someone has already dealt with Lee Prechaun and strung him up from the rafters!

Community News Leeks and daffodils Welsh folk all over the world celebrated their patron saint’s day last Friday, March 1st.
St. David’s Day commemorates the death of the patron saint of Wales in the sixth century. Very little is known of his life, but St. David, or Dewi Sant in Welsh, is thought to have been around 100 years old when he died, having undertaken pilgrimages in South Wales, the west of England and then on to Jerusalem where he was made an Archbishop.
David returned to Wales to set up a devout religious community in Glyn Rhosyn, now the town of St. David’s. He is accredited with many miracles, the most remarkable of which involved him raising the ground beneath his feet so that he could be seen and heard by all as he preached beside a church in Llandewi Brefi. Officially recognised as a Catholic saint in 1120, the feast of St David has been marked in the religious calendar for

centuries, but was only declared a national celebration in the eighteenth century. Although the wearing of leeks has long been a tradition on St. David’s Day, more recently the daffodil has also been adopted as an attractive, and certainly sweeter smelling alternative. Indeed, according to folklore, daffodils first bloom on March 1st. As both are national emblems of Wales, either is perfectly acceptable.
The customary St. David’s Day dish is cawl, a broth usually made of lamb with vegetables and, of course, more leeks.
With the flag of St. David flying high, parades and concerts take place all over Wales and in the Welsh communities around the world.

This is Bobby his date of birth is 9.2.2012 His weight’s is approximately 7 kilos and is a male of mixed breed – a small fluffy boy he will remain small, and he will be castrated next week. Bobby is a lovely little chap, a good character, plays well with the other dogs, but we do not know how he would be with cats. He is a very loving and affectionate boy toward people, likes to be cuddled and fussed over. He appears in very good health. He was rescued from the Paraiso.
Although he has just arrived at FAMA it is easy to see he is a young, happy, healthy boy. He has integrated well with the other dogs he is sharing a run with. He eats well, his coat is also in a beautiful condition. He would undoubtedly make someone a wonderful pet. Our local Age Care on the telly! Come and enjoy Age Care Association was invited by Mijas 340 TV to appear on a Mijas International informative programme in English. Tony Bellamy of Age Care met Karen McMahon, the Mijas 340 TV presenter, in the studio where Tony was able to explain the role Age Care plays in the community. The programme was aired on Tuesday, 26th February and will be repeated some time in the future.
Karen (right in the photo) was able to put Tony at his ease and he explained that Age Care is a charitable organisation entirely run by volunteers to help the local older English speaking residents who may not be able to help themselves. Volunteers undertake various activities such as help with shopping, a visit to the doctors, or just to visit for a chat as there are many lonely, and maybe isolated, people in our community. Age Care is also looking for Spanish speaking volunteers to help with the hospital visits particularly, at the Costa del Sol hospital, where translators will no longer be provided. Volunteers should be willing to commit themselves on a regular basis and volunteers with their own transport are particularly sought. Tony did point out that although volunteers would not be remunerated, their expenses would be paid so they should not be out of pocket.
Age Care also works with several other charitable organisations such as the Alzheimer's Family Association of Fuengirola and SenVol – students who want to improve their English by socialising with more mature English speakers. Tony also told Karen about the various functions run by Age Care throughout the year such as the summer tea party, Christmas luncheon – where Salon Varietes provided the live entertainment for free – and some of the fundraising events such as the fashion show. Most of the funds raised come through the charity shop in El Zoco where people have been very generous in donating clothes, books and bric-a-brac. Age Care can help with advice on a wide variety of subjects. For example, care homes or funeral companies. Tony pointed out that they were very happy to help people make a choice and take them to see various places, but would not recommend any particular care home or other company as they wanted to remain unbiased. Although Age Care is not an emergency service, they were very willing to do what they could. He told Karen about a lady who wanted to go to the UK for a family event but had no one to look after her 102-year-old mother and Age Care was able to help with some

The system has undergone many tests in Germany including an opening and closing test of over 10,000 cycles and also a wind test of up to 2000 Pascal’s. The Andalucian Garden Group The subject last month for The Andalucian Garden Group was “How Safe is your Food?” when Pete Langdale, from La Palma Nurseries at Velez Malaga, gave a fascinating insight into the rigorous monitoring procedures, which supermarkets like M&S and Safeways (to name but a few) carry out for suppliers, such as his nursery. Pete regularly supplies
coriander and parsley, in vast quantities throughout the year, to many supermarkets. He also organised a little competition to further emphasise how the amount of any chemical or insecticide allowed is one in fifty million in each batch tested. He very generously donated a €50 voucher as a prize and this was won by group member John Jackson.
At this month’s meeting (Tuesday 12th March), the speaker will be one of their members, Helena McGinty, and her topic is “Basic Garden Design” – a subject which is always useful – no matter whether your garden is a new one or a more established one. We can all use some new ideas!

Unusually the Foreign Residents of Estepona (AREME), which raises money for local charities and brings foreign residents socially together, have another important event this week. Recently the Town Hall has had problems with their bookings system and so they have had three attempts at holding this event, which have been aborted at the last minute. At last they have confirmation that the Coffee Morning and Table Sale has been approved and can go ahead on Saturday March 9th. AREME need to reach as many readers as they can (at short notice) in order to make the event a success and also so they can eventually support more charities this year – many of which are desperate for help. In addition, the next Foreign Residents’ Association of Estepona (AREME) Forum, which is on the new tax changes, is on Monday March 11th at the Palacio de Congresos in Estepona at 11am. Gere perfectly plays the hollow man incapable of any real depth of feeling and completely unaware of the lives of ordinary people, who cannot see that the normal tenets of law should have any impact on him.
As the noose tightens, the question is will he be able to avoid paying the price. This is a ruthless silver-fox role made for Richard Gere, ably supported by Susan Sarandon as the wife who looks like a tough cookie but is really craving more time with her philandering spouse.

Herb crumbed salmon with a roasted tomato and pepper sauce ( Serves 4)
Ingredients:
salmon portions 6-7oz each 150 grams of cream cheese 250 grams of wholegrain breadcrumbs • 2 tablespoons of chives, roughly chopped • 2 tablespoons of parsley, roughly chopped • 2 tablespoons of coriander, roughly chopped • 1 clove of finely crushed garlic

½ lemon rind, grated 60 grams of lemon juice

3 peppers 1 small onion 2 tablespoons of oil 2 cloves of crushed garlic 1 can of chopped tomatoes
For the Sauce:
Directions Season salmon fillets lightly on both sides with salt and pepper. Place skin side down on an oven tray, lined with baking paper. Process all ingredients in a food processer until combined and chopped. Spread each salmon portion with a layer of the cream cheese and put the breadcrumb mixture on top of the salmon fillets, pressing down on top and cook for 10 to 15 minutes until just cooked at 180˚C (160 ˚C fan )/350 ˚F/ Gas Mark 4.
While the salmon is cooking, roast the peppers over a gas flame or under a grill until the peppers are black. Place the peppers in a paper bag to sweat, once cool peel off the charred skins and remove the seeds. Then
roughly chop the peppers and leave to one side. In a large saucepan heat the oil and add the onion and garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes or until soft. Add the peppers and the tomatoes and cook for 10 minutes over a low heat. Puree the sauce using a food processer or stick blender until smooth. Strain through a sieve to remove the seeds and return to a clean pan. Gently heat and season if needed. Once the sauce is hot, pour the sauce on to the plate and place the cooked salmon on top of the sauce and serve with a wedge of lemon.

Two weeks ago we looked at adding "ísimo and ísima" on to words to make them "very, very". If you read the article you'll know what I mean. This week we are going to see how another suffix works. Remember a suffix is the little bit you add on to the end of a word to change its meaning. Adding "ería" often means you are talking about a place and specifically where something is sold. So, we know that fruta is fruit. Therefore, it doesn't take much effort to work out that a frutería is where you go to buy fruit. Similarily, perfume is perfume (just a tad obvious) so a perfumería is where you can pop along to if you are in the mood to spoil yourself or a loved one with a bottle of scent. Carne is meat and the butcher's shop is la carnecería. Pescado is fish and the fishmonger's is la pescadería. Una flor is a flower and una florista is a florist. A flower shop is the shop of the florist so it is la floristería. Of course, you may prefer to do all your shopping in one of the big supermarkets, but where is the fun in that? You aren't going to have the chance to practise your Spanish and, in my experience, the supermarkets aren't necessarily cheaper either. If you want to buy books - libros you go to la libraría and if you want paper - papel (and notebooks, pens, newspapers and so on) you go to la papelería. Skin patches tackle prostate cancer Skin patches which deliver oestrogen into the blood may be a cheaper and safer treatment for prostate cancer than the current therapy of injections of a chemical to cut levels of testosterone – the driving force of many
prostate cancers – but which causes menopauselike the side effects.
Researchers at the Imperial College London compared patches and injections in 254 patient and found the patches
were safe and eliminated the side effects.
Using oestrogen to treat prostate cancer is an old treatment. Both oestrogen and testosterone are very similar chemically, so ramping up the levels of oestrogen in the body can reduce the amount of testosterone produced – and slow prostate cancer growth.
However, taking oral oestrogen pills caused significant health problems by overdosing the liver. The organ then produced chemicals which caused blood clots, heart attacks and strokes. The preferred treatment is injections of a drug, LHRHa, which reduces the production of both oestrogen and testosterone.
However, this has side effects similar to the menopause in women – resulting in poor bone health and diabetes. The researchers said: "We're not claiming this is equivalent to current therapies yet, but it does look like we are getting castration levels of testosterone." However, they said they needed to follow patients for longer.
"The next step is to test if the oestrogen patches are as effective at stopping the growth of prostate cancer as the current hormone treatments, we're now testing this in over 600 patients." A spokesman for the charity Cancer Research UK which part funded the study, said: "More men
than ever are surviving prostate cancer thanks to advances in research, but we still urgently need to find more effective treatments and reduce side effects.
"This trial is an important step towards better and kinder treatments that could bring big benefits to men with prostate cancer in the future."

… but I remember standing in the rain for a much older “star” some 25 years ago too! The fans were from aged 8 upwards and they had been promised sight of their idol at 8.30pm. However, by the time Justine Bieber bothered to turn up, many of them had already left in tears.
Monday night’s long awaited and much anticipated concert at the O2 in London’s docklands was left a shambles as Bieber only deigned to take to the stage at around 10.30pm and it wasn’t to screams of delight either. He offered no explanation or apology to the youngsters and their parents who had been waiting for nigh on two hours for him to start.
The support bands had managed to get there on time and had received good feedback from the audience but, some two hours later – for some, two hours too late with children being seen asleep in their seats, if they were still there. The concert was a sell out and the place still looked crowded but it is reported that several hundred had given up the chance to see their idol and gone home. And on Tuesday morning, one mother reported that her 15-
year-old daughter was just too tired to go to school having been up most of the night. Many of the kids and their families who had travelled to the venue by London’s Underground were worried about being stranded and missing the last train or their connections to further, outreaching areas such as Kent in the south East. If the concert had started on time there would have been plenty of time for travel but, two hours later and people were panicking about getting home and not being stranded in East London for the night or having to foot the expense of London taxis.
Tickets had cost up to £300 each and Bieber was booed as he arrived to start his performance. To add insult to injury, Bieber had been spotted enjoying himself in many of London’s top night spots during the previous few nights. One wonders what his reaction would have been had he turned up and had to wait outside for a couple of hours. I bet he would have been about as pleased with that as his audience were with him. This young man needs to buckle
down and arrogance.

This is not the first time this has happened in Docklands. On Sunday, 9th October 1988 before the O2 was even thought of, Jean Michel Jarre pulled the same stunt.
In apalling conditions where most of the 100,000 strong audience had resorted to covering themselves with black plastic bin liners such was the pouring rain, he eventually turned up in a limousine with Charlotte Rampling with a lightbox in the window so no-one could take unauthorised pictures of him. Denise Whitehair Could you possibly put an article and the attached photo in The News for me please? This lovely little cat was picked up off the street with others and brought to me to be neutered.It turns out that he has a micro chip and was reported missing in 2011. His owner is a Mr David Wingrove who lived in Alhaurin El Grande, but I am told he has now returned to England. Someone must surely know where he is in the UK and it would be so nice if he could be traced and the cat could get back to his original owner who cared enough about him to report him missing.
However I must congratulate them both on excellent service when I recently sent a birthday card to my son in Central Scotland. I purchased the card on Wednesday morning, 27th

He is currently with me but will need a new home if his owner can’t be found. He has suffered a broken leg while living rough which has now healed – apart from that he is fit and healthy and very sweet.

omets have been described as ‘dirty snowballs’. Millions of them live in an area outside the orbit of Pluto known as the Oort cloud. They slowly orbit around the Sun, being held there by the weakest of gravitational force from the Sun but every now and then one of them will become slightly nudged from its orbit and then begins to fall in toward the Sun. Slowly at first, but as the Sun’s gravity becomes stronger so the comet speeds up. It is now racing towards the inner Solar System, past Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. It is usually around this point that the heat from the Sun begins to vaporise the comet and the associated comet’s tail begins to appear.

he comet continues on its journey toward the Sun passing Earth, Venus and finally Mercury. Some comets are on suicide missions and crash straight into the Sun, others are swung around the Sun and back into deep space never to be seen again while some are thrown into very elliptical orbits around the Sun that sees them return anytime from a few years or once in a lifetime like Halley’s comet or maybe once every several thousand years.

omet PanSTARRS was discovered in June 2011 by astronomers working with the Pan-STARR telescope in Hawaii and since comets usually carry the names of their discoverers, it has been designated C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS). Once it rounds the Sun it will be thrown back into space to return in around 110,000 years time so surely a once in a lifetime event.

ut comets are notoriously unpredictable. Early predictions were saying that PanSTARRS would be ‘as bright as the Moon’; by October 2012 this had been downgraded to ‘as bright as Venus’. As of today it is now being classed ‘as bright as the stars in Orion’s belt’.

esterday March 5th it was at its closest point to the Earth at about 100 million miles, so there’s no danger of it hitting us. tarting on March 7th, PanSTARRS will appear above the western horizon after sunset for Northern
Hemisphere viewers. To see it, you will need an unobstructed, cloudless view of the west after sunset. It is best to pick a dark spot, away from streetlights. Look in the sunset direction, as soon as the sky darkens. The comet will be just above the horizon.

n March 10th the comet will pass closest to the sun at about 28 million miles. Comets are typically brightest and most active around the time they are closest to the sun when solar heating vaporizes ice and dust from the comet’s outer crust. Not only will the comet quickly brighten, but it should have developed the long classic comet dust tail.

round March 12th and 13th moonlight will interfere with the darkness of the night sky, but this should be the easiest time to spot it as the young crescent moon will be nearby in the same part of the sky as the comet.
T
hroughout the rest of March the comet should remain visible in the Northern Hemisphere evening sky low in the west after sunset. It will move northward each evening during the month as it moves from being in front of the constellation Pisces to being in front of the constellations Pegasus and Andromeda. At this time, the comet might have a bright dust tail, and be visible to the unaided eye or binoculars. It should, at least, if it lives up to expectations!
N
o matter how bright it gets in March, the comet will surely fade as April arrives, as it moves away from the Sun and back out into the depths of space. But it will still be located far to the north of the sky in the Northern Hemisphere. That means it might be visible somewhere in the sky throughout the night. What’s more, the comet will be near in the sky to another beautiful and fuzzy object in our night sky, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), the nearest large spiral galaxy to our Milky Way. If the comet truly is bright then, and if it still has a substantial tail, it’ll be an awesome photo opportunity! Happy Stargazing!

18 dirt bike riders created stunt show history – by setting a world record for the most motorbikes back-flipping in the air simultaneously. The eye-catching stunt by the Nitro Circus team saw riders fly simultaneously through the air over a whopping 75ft gap at London's O2 Arena. Pirelli’s new Formula1 tyres The 2012 season saw the McLaren-Mercedes team setting the fastest pit stop in Formula1 history (2.31s). Pirelli are looking to introduce some motivation to break this record with its newest F1 tyres for the 2013 season. Pirelli want to see more pit stops and more overtaking manoeuvres over the course of each race. To this end Pirelli have developed a tyre within the new rules set by the FIA. The softer structural compounds and flexible reinforced shoulders should make tyres significantly more rapid than last year. The objective then is to improve performance and increase thermal degradation to ensure at least two pit stops per race occur. The sidewalls also receive
an upgrade with brighter colours and one new colour – orange in place of the silver for the hard compound tyres. The defining characteristic of the 2013 Pirelli Formula One tyres is softer compounds all round, which will allow them to reach peak operating temperature faster and deliver lap times that are around 0.5 seconds faster than last year. "The 2013 season continues the philosophy adopted by Pirelli last year in evolving the original 2011 range of Formula One tyres," commented Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery. "The goal is to continuously set new challenges for the drivers and to ensure that all the
teams start the new season on a level playing field when it comes to the tyres. Through accumulating more information with each grand prix last year, the teams eventually fully understood the tyres, after a spectacular start with seven winners from the first seven races. The result at the end of the year was races with less competition and sometimes only one pit stop. This phenomenon was also observed in 2011, disappointing many fans and prompting some of the teams to ask us to continue developing our tyres further this year, in order to provide a fresh challenge with something different. Our 2013 range of tyres mixes up the cards once more to help overtaking and ensure two to three pit stops per race." The Formula One tyres are designed at the Pirelli laboratories in Milan and produced at a dedicated facility in Izmit, Turkey. Having passed quality control and other checks, the tyres are then sent to Pirelli's logistics hub in Didcot (UK) from where they are shipped out to all the different circuits. Once more, each Formula One car will have 11
sets of tyres available for the weekend, made up of six sets of the harder and five sets of the softer compound. In total Pirelli takes about 1800 tyres to each race. The on-track Pirelli team will once more be made up of around 55 people this year, including fitters, logistics personnel, hospitality staff, and engineers. As has always been the case, each team will have its own dedicated Pirelli engineer.

Shake it off when a bad player beats you. Remember that in the long run it is good for the game.
Don't play over your head Make sure you are beating the limit you play now consistently before moving up in limits. When you do move up, if you find yourself having trouble, don't be afraid to move back down. Moving up before you are ready can decimate your bankroll. Those higher limit games will still be there when the time is right.
Do be selective It is tempting to just jump right into the first game or tournament that is available when you are itching to play. Sometimes there is only one game you can play in. But if you have a number of options, you

Don't play emotionally Being emotional is nice when you are having a tender moment with a loved one, but in poker it is instant death. Some very frustrating things are going to happen to you during your poker adventures – if you let these things get to you, you are doomed. You are going to take very bad beats. You are going to face opponents who do everything wrong and win huge sums, while you are doing everything right and losing. In these situations players are very tempted to "spite the fates" and play incorrectly as well. Of course, the poker gods rarely smile upon good players who do this and your bankroll will quickly reflect this fact.

Win for Brownlee Britain's Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee set a new course record in winning the Abu Dhabi short triathlon, despite taking a wrong turn. The 24-year-old missed an exit sign during the 100km cycle section causing him to lose the lead to Cesar Beilo.

Brownlee trailed the Dutchman by 80 seconds at the final transition but he cut 30 seconds off that time with a quick change into his running shoes. He caught Beilo in the 10km run and won in three hours 20 minutes, 18 seconds.

David Beckham takes up ambassador role
David Beckham has become a global ambassador for Chinese football to help the image of the country's game. The Chinese Super League has recently been hit by the exit of ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, while also suffering from a match-fixing scandal. Beckham, 37, will combine the role with playing for his new club, Paris St-Germain. His role will involve attending league matches in China and visiting clubs to help promote the game to children.

The European Tour has "confirmed its support" to back a proposed ban on anchored putters from 2016. The PGA Tour and PGA of America are both against banning anchoring, which involves resting the end of a putter against the body to act as a hinge. European Tour boss George O'Grady said: "We understand the points put forward by the PGA Tour and the PGA of America. The issue's received far greater focus in the US, maybe because of the number of their golfers using the method." Golf's ruling bodies, the R&A and the US Golf Association (USGA) want to limit the use of belly and broomhandle putters over concerns anchored strokes could replace traditional putting strokes.

The world number one pulled out midway through his second round in Florida last week, later blaming his decision on a severe toothache. However McIlroy has now told US magazine Sports Illustrated that "it was a reactive decision". "What I did was not good for the tournament, not good for the kids and the fans who were out there watching me. It was not the right thing to do." McIlroy had completed just eight holes of his second round when he walked off the course. As he left the course he told reporters he was in a "bad state mentally".
